Amazon's "Gay" Glitch
Source: Tom's Guide US | Keywords: Amazon, Gay, Lesbian, Glitch | Themes: The Internet, Business
Storms were brewing over the Easter weekend with regards to an apparent “ham-fisted” error on Amazon.com.
The last few days has seen the de-ranking of various titles on Amazon.com. Amazon is calling it a glitch, the Twittersphere is calling it #Amazonfail (supposedly more popular than #Easter or #Jesus over the weekend), and the boat-rockers are saying it was no accident and that certain genres were affected more than others, more specifically gay, lesbian and bisexual content. The LATimes reports that only one of the top 10 books in the etailer's Gay & Lesbian section continues to have a sales ranking (the Kindle version of "The Picture of Dorian Gray").
The site has said the issue is nothing but a glitch and released a statement to that effect:
“This is an embarrassing and ham-fisted cataloging error for a company that prides itself on offering complete selection.
It has been misreported that the issue was limited to Gay & Lesbian themed titles - in fact, it impacted 57,310 books in a number of broad categories such as Health, Mind & Body, Reproductive & Sexual Medicine, and Erotica. This problem impacted books not just in the United States but globally. It affected not just sales rank but also had the effect of removing the books from Amazon's main product search.
Many books have now been fixed and we're in the process of fixing the remainder as quickly as possible, and we intend to implement new measures to make this kind of accident less likely to occur in the future.”
However, several reports say that when Mark Probst, author of The Filly (a story about a two gay cowboys who fall in love), contacted Amazon about his book being de-ranked, the site responded with this:
"In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude 'adult' material from appearing in some searches and best seller lists. Since these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature."
What do you think of this? Aside from thinking clumsy error would have been a better term to use than a ham-fisted error, I don’t know what to think. The New York Daily News reports that Amazon has a new policy about how they rank "adult" titles. Books that are stripped of their sales ranking are more difficult t locate. That said, NY Daily also reports (citing a petition against this new “adult” policy) that "Homophobia: A History," and "The Dictionary of Homophobia: A Global History of Gay & Lesbian Experience," have had their rankings removed but "Playboy: The Complete Centerfolds" did not. All this makes it sound more like this particular genre is more affected than others but then again, Amazon has said 57,310 titles have been affected so who really knows?

It doesn't sound like a glitch. And Amazon should not have reverted it. To take an example from the article, if I run a search on cowboys, I don't want to see stories of cowboys butt-plugging each other in my result set.
ROFL
Good keep the gay crap out of there. People don't need to be subjected to sick homos. It's disgusting and the bible strictly teaches against homosexuality. Gj Amazon. Keep the gay filters on!
what do i think? that's gay.
what do i think? someone at amazon needs to be fired...
for all the homophobes, today the fags, tomorrow the blacks, and then the jews... but don't worry we'll get to your kind eventually ;-)
from Pink Floyd "The Wall",
"We're gonna find out where you fans really stand.
Are there any queers in the theatre tonight?
Get 'em up against the wall. -- 'Gainst the wall!
And that one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me.
Get him up against the wall. -- 'Gainst the wall!
And that one looks Jewish, and that one's a coon.
Who let all this riffraff into the room?
There's one smoking a joint, and another with spots!
If I had my way I'd have all of ya shot."
and
"Waiting, to cut out the deadwood.
Waiting, to clean up the city.
Waiting, to follow the worms.
Waiting, to put on a black shirt.
Waiting, to weed out the weaklings.
Waiting, to smash in their windows and kick in their doors.
Waiting, for the final solution to strengthen the strain.
Waiting, to follow the worms.
Waiting, to turn on the showers and fire the ovens.
Waiting, for the queers and the coons and the Reds and the Jews.
Waiting, to follow the worms.
Would you like to see Britannia,
Rule again, my friend?
All you have to do is follow the worms.
Would you like to send our colored cousins,
Home again, my friend?
All you need to do is follow the worms."
wow one squat, way to be an asshole, though, i don't think that they should have to revert it either, it is there store
Gays are known to make a big commotion (usually only benefiting themselves) for the less than 0,1% of the population they are.
At least the Jews didn't make a sound...
But then, at least the gay guys don't destroy everything, like other .. groups.. do.
The gays act as if their right has been taken if one gay book has been removed from the store?
Dude.. What about the million others?
It's their store, sure, but they want to make money. They'll do what they think it takes to make more money, so if customers raise a big enough stink about it (e.g. "BOYCOTT AMAZON!") then they will revert it.
@ProDigit80
Yes. It's not necessarily about your numbers; it's about how loud you can get and your ability to deliver one strong message. Corporations have an advantage here because the top speaks for the whole company. It's just one small group, so it's easier for them to speak with one strong voice. Older people generally have more political power than the younger folk because they vote more and lobby better. So, if you want to be heard and you want to get it your way, you better get real skilled at raising a stink.

@bone squat
Keep your bigoted opinion to yourself and don't involve religion in your comments.
@ProDigit80
GLBT's make up between 3-20% of the population according to a multitude of studies. There is such a large margin due to there being so many "closeted" individuals that cannot be officially accounted for. And btw stereotyping and generalization are not good habits to have.
@bone squatKeep your bigoted opinion to yourself and don't involve religion in your comments.
Make. Him.
Who made you the judge of the world?
OK IF I GET BLASTED ON THIS YOU CAN KISS MY ASS.. FOR THE ONES WHO SAID HOMOS ARE SICK AND WHAT NOT YOU ARE AN ASSHOLE FOR BEING SUCH A CLOSED MINDED JERK... You sound like you might be baptist...yeah this is aimed at you bone twat.. I would go as far to say you don't like black people either... Well you suck and when we get your generation killed off the world will be a better place.....
The bible, LOL. Bone Squat, did you know that Jesus was one of those "brown people"? How do you feel about that? "White folk" didn't live in that area until the late 1800s. Please note that 99%(yes, that's the real official figure) of scientists are atheists, you know, the people more qualified to debate the origins of the universe than your standard rural redneck church-goer.
Make. Him.Who made you the judge of the world?
I don't judge the world. People can live their lives and do what they want as long as it harms noone. What gives him the right to judge someone's way of life?
And besides I didn't say he couldn't speak his opinion I just said keep it to himself if he doesn't have anything to say that isn't vulgar and rude. Especially if it condemns others.
And go christop!
Not enough real information to make any serious comments one way or another.
This:
"Amazon has said 57,310 titles have been affected so who really knows?"
sounds abour right.
I would think it would be simple enough to add a filter selection to the search options at amazon to clear up an "problems" that triggered their "adjustment" in the first place. /shrug
As for the stereotyping talk...ughh...not even going to go there.

You are actually full of crap..
So good job.
Your ignorance is amazing.. I suppose you think most scientists believe in global warming too..? You might need to go read some actual polls, instead of making it up.
http://www.livescience.com/strange [...] s_god.html
Take a good look at that BTW..
the_one is a fine example of deciding what you want to believe, and then figuring out a way to distort the facts to support that, not unlike a Tuan Nguyen article about Macs(albeit, he's gotten a little better). That article lists "political scientists" as believing in god. No, science = Math, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, etc... There is nothing scientific about politics, clearly that study was bought and paid for by rightwing nutjobs.
All I have to say is, please discuss Amazon and they're policy, don't make this another internet flame rage thread about Gays and whether they are all going to hell or whatever...
MY opinion is that its Amazon's store and they can do with it as they see fit...It doesn't really matter to me if they include them or not because if it is a gay book (no offense intended, just a description of the subject) then I can choose to or (much more likely) not to read the book.
I'm not even going to comment on what my personal beliefs are regarding gays and lesbians or the bible (except to mention that I don't believe the figure that 99% of scientists are athiests...that number is waaay too high for worldwide... maybe in a certain college or region, but not even in the US is it THAT high) because this is not the place to debate that.
There are thousands upon thousands of other places to ruin or better yet, just join in on the ones that have already been ruined by mindless bickering that changes no ones mind.
Thank you and good night.
P.S. If anyone is offended by this, well, it offends me that your offended by it so what are you gonna do about it?
I agree orderchaos.
My point was only that they are bashing him for stating his beliefs.
Now they bash me because I defend him. Obviously I could find polls that say both extremes my point is you need to SHUT UP about it on the internet and stop being so racist against his beliefs.

From here: http://www.livescience.com/strange [...] s_god.html
Someone in the comments made an interesting point, the article says "xx% DON'T believe", they don't actually say what percentage DO believe, nor do they say if there was an "I don't know" answer on the survey. Naturally, one would word it as "xx% DO believe in god". They are choosing their wording very carefully without providing the actual data. But hey, they have their own website, so it must be true.

Seems like your judging others in the same way.
If you can tell him to keep his opinions to himself....surely you should do the same.
What gives you the right to tell others what they should find acceptable and tolerable?
"The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can change this."
-Albert Einstein(famous "Jewish" guy)
Let's stop granting validity to the opinions all people claiming the title "scientist", and limit ourselves to those who were truly ingenious. I imagine we'll hit about 100% atheist if we limit ourselves to the Einsteins of the world, none of whom had time to give a crap what gays do in the privacy of their own home.
Thank you The_one...everyone else, you can shut up now.
sorry for the double post and I know I'm probably only feeding the fire that's going to burn this news page to the ground, but I needed to thank you for making it clear to everyone how close minded you are in your unbelief... you aren't even willing to listen to anyone who disagrees with you, Good Job!! go join Hitler and leave the rest of us to listen to ALL the opinions and make up our own minds.
Ok, so triple post, but there is no edit post button here (can you guys who run this place fix that plz?)
I just wanted to also clear up this part of EinsteinFanboy's post: Einstein was born jewish, but grew up to be Agnostic, not athiest, not christian. He believed in God (largely because it was discovered there was a beginning to the universe which means it had to be created by God)
He didn't believe in a personal God like Christianity or Judaism, so he can be classified as Agnostic, not athiest as you state... and to show you that is true check here and here and here if you don't believe me.
Lame...there are more important and concerning topics to discuss than a homosexual book error. Imagine if people put the same amount of effort into unifying the country and doing what's in the best interest of the majority as they do for themselves and their political party/ideology. I swear...Republicans, Democrats, different races, ages, sexes, sexuality, religion, etc. work so hard and get so spun up about differences (usually under the false guise of equality) that they do a lot more harm than good, don't win people to their cause, and continue to bring the country as a whole down.
He believed in God (largely because it was discovered there was a beginning to the universe which means it had to be created by God)
How does that prove that it had to be created by a god? Such a proof would take centuries to research and write based on the assumption that any proof at all even exists that can support the theory of a "higher being". He, and many other scientists who are either agnostic or theistic, saw the beauty in the order of everything in the scientific realm as an indication that if their was a god, He would never be able to be empirically proven to exist (or not exist) by means of science, though the grand scale and order of the universe seems to adhere to some master plan created by some "prime mover" of sorts due to the overall scientific elegance of just about everything.
I adhere to the belief in the number 42, the answer to "Life, The Universe, and Everything," where 42 is the exponent to which the probability of anything existing at all is raised to, i.e. the chances of the universe being started and life on Earth even forming are something on the order of 1x10^42 to one against.
I'll jump on the "traditional marriage" bandwagon just as soon as somebody can empirically prove that gay couples are a detriment to the sanctity of marriage and the integrity of family life any more than straight couples who marry for all the wrong reasons, propagate, cheat on each other, and divorce when they realize that they really are miserable with each other, all without learning from their mistakes and after all is said and done are responsible for bringing into the world children who now have to grow up in a broken or ass-backward home because they will never be able to understand what it really takes to make a relationship last long-term, whether it be socially, professionally, spiritually, or whatever. If you can't learn how to deal with people who are not intrinsically like you, you will never make it very far in this world or lead a fulfilling life.
Much ado about nothing which is usual for the gay community. Take off the tin foil hats. Amazon makes a living selling things they don't give a damn if you are a homosexual.
The gay book in question wasn't even adult and yet the letter from Amazon stated that it was excluded for that reason. See the author's LiveJournal posts here http://markprobst.livejournal.com/
Omnipotent = a been that can do anything...
If God is omnipotent, then god make a stone so heavy so heavy that u cant sustain ...what? you cant make such a huge rock.. then ur not God..
