Modern Warfare 2 Selling Like Hotcakes

By - Source: Tom's Guide US

Nearly 5 million in the first 24 hours. Insane.

Sooo, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 came out earlier this week and a lot of people were excited about it. How many people? Well, in just the U.S., Canada and UK alone, Activision managed to rake in $310 million in the first day.

The huge cash haul was the result of 4.7 million copies sold on the first day – a staggering number made even more impressive that it doesn't include all other countries that Modern Warfare 2 launched in.

NPD Group figures that 1.2 million of those copies were sold in the UK. Interestingly enough, Activision shipped 3 million copies to the UK in preparation for the launch.

Given how a game is considered successful if it sells over a million copies in a month, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's first day is nothing short of incredible.

Too bad they raped the PC version, I rented the 360 version and it is quite good, plays like Battlefield (no vehicles and smaller maps) with COD controls. 32vs32 would have been epic.

Who seriously didn't expect this? Only the hardcore PC gamers actually "boycotted" the game, everyone else is still buying it so the cancelled pre-orders was nothing but a minor irritation for Activision. It's a CoD game, it will sell even if it's a polished turd.

to bad that more folks didnot boycott this game.now if they do sell lots it shows you can get the public to buy anything so the next one will be even more crippled than before.

Too bad they released the PS3 version with buggy as hell "match making." You can't join an invitation from your friend so you get to play alone online. Boring. They are supposed to patch this tomorrow but it's pretty pathetic that something this awful wasn't caught in testing.

Also, the invite system on the PS3 is god-awful. It's like 6 steps just to invite someone and it sucks even more because as of right now inviting someone is pointless.

The 360 version doesn't appear to have either of these problems for me. And people wonder why I would love to pay for Xbox Live on the Playstation instead of the PSN.

Could have sold more if they didnt treat PC players so poorly. I am even over the fact that they removed dedi servers, they could have handled the whole situation better from a PR standpoint. As great as this game probably is, I am not going to buy/play it. If ActiWard made a statement apologizing (which will most likely never happen) about how they dropped the ball on how they approached the PC changes and community, then I would probably get it. No dedi sucks, 18 player max sucks, but you know if the style of the game suits it, then whatever. After playing L4D the last week, the smaller groups and random groups (i have been just auto-joining) at times is a more intimate gaming experience. Massive 32 player warfare may just be a thing of the past for CoD for better or worse.

Ah well, its all speculation since I still havent played it. And possibly never will.

It actually has very frustrating multi player. Stick to COD4.

They would've had my 60 bucks, but nah not anymore. They can keep their console port.

I still need to pick up the first Modern Warfare. Everyone knew this game would be huge because everyone loved CoD4, myself included. I would be happy to play CoD1 + UO on my PC. Yet another must play FPS.

For PC? and how so? I still fire up CoD4 on my pc, single player is still always fun and around 30ish players in multi is perfect. Of course with ping under 50. =)

How does this compare to the sales of MW1?

Since COD4 was so amazing it was obvious that whether the game was good or bad it was guaranteed to sell well on the first day on consoles.

Was going to buy it on PC..was even considering buying it after they droped the dedi's but Like someone else said..They way they treated us and handled the boycots and what not made me not buy it.To me it shows they dont care about us so obviously they dont care about my money so I wont give it to them.

According to wiki, IW said 13 million copies of COD4 sold as of May 2009. Unfortunately, I can see MW2 selling as much. Boooo

All my friends are console gamers and they have no clue why the PC version sucks. I think it's funny they all got their 360's banned the other day. Even if every PC gamer didn't buy MW2, the console folks will make this pile of crap a success. There are over 31 million 360's and 27 million PS3's out there.

I will say, the SP Campaign is great, and the "Spec Ops" missions are very entertaining. However I will not buy it until it is about 1/2 price on ebay. I have a torrented copy for now. But I will buy it when it hits half price new on ebay, they half ass it, they'll get half pay for it. But I have heard the the matchmaking on PC actually works, but I've also heard it's laggy on all consoles and PC, IWnet = not godlike? Hmmm....

And as an additive to my previous post; I will agree, they handled the PR for this release in a dreadful manner. All they could say was "yes, we know there's a petition...what about it?" No acts to please them, not public answer as to the reasoning, just sidesteping questions with skewed answers. That pushed me over the edge, I was still considering buying it after the no dedicated's, but that killed me for the time being.

I really hope they eventually patch the pc version to include more than 18 players max in an online session, and a non p2p network, my school blocks p2p traffic...

It would be interesting to see what the breakdown of the sales for each platform is.
