Ubuntu To Ship With Super Talent SSDs

Super Talent has announced that the company will, for a limited time, bundle its line of MasterDrive MX SSDs with a free CD containing the Ubuntu Desktop Edition Linux OS and the OpenOffice software suite.
Super Talent caused quite a bit of excitement when it announced back in May that all of its latest MasterDrive MX SSDs would be priced at just under $1,000.
The price of Solid-State Drives have definitely started to drop. Not too long before the MasterDrive MX announcement, Super Talent announced the 2.5” 256 GB SATA SSD for a little under $6,000.
The MasterDrive MX is available in 30 GB, 60 GB, and 120 GB versions, which are priced at $299, $449, and $649 respectively, which is amazing value. Unfortunately, the affordable prices do mean there’s got to be a catch somewhere. The MasterDrive MXs use MLC NAND memory which means that while the read speed is a fairly respectable 120 MB/sec, write speeds aren’t nearly as good as what you’d get with an SLC drive.
Super Talent does do an SLC version, the MasterDrive DX but you pay for performance. The 30 GB version is going to set you back $699 while the 60 GB version is priced at $1,299, with those extra few bucks upping your write performance from 40 MB/sec to 70 MB/sec.
Ubuntu will be bundled with the SSDs from July 1st right through to September 30th of this year.
“Bundling an excellent OS plus applications package like Ubuntu helps MasterDrive MX customers get up and running that much faster and easier. This is a great value add that doesn’t increase the cost”, explained Super Talent Marketing Director, Joe James.

Good news. Hopefully More SSD and HDD manufacturers will include lite and free starter OSs on their drives so users can have at least some usability while they wait for another OS or before their first install.

but a CD? why not have the drive come with the partition and system installed already, to make it plug and play!..of course one would later format and partition it as needed, but it woudl be even more cool that it woulc come ready =D
because the os supports the rest of your hardware. therefore plug 'n' play= not happening, and it just makes it that much more annoying if basic functionality of ubuntu doesn't actually work with your hardware (rarity for most mainstream hardware) but it's just easier to not install it, not to mention the extra labor time taken to install the os.
anyway, great idea, i've been wanting to see something like this for years. If they would include an open source OS with every harddrive sold, oem or no, then linux could get a much more massive user base, and any competition is good competition.
