This all sounds very familiar.

Japan's Kaguya probe has ended its 19 month long mission at the Moon by crashing into the lunar surface. In what Japan is calling a “controlled crash”, the AP cites the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) as saying the probe dropped onto the surface of the moon at 18:25 GMT yesterday.

Kaguya was launched in September 2007 to study the moon. "The mission was a success. Thanks to Kaguya, we will have a very detailed map of the lunar surface," said JAXA spokesman Shinichi Sobue said, according to the Associated Press.

The news echoes events that took place earlier this year, in March. China’s first lunar probe, Chang'e 1, made a “controlled crash” into the moon. Chang'e 1 took off on October 24, 2007 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center and spent 494 days in space. The March 1 collision marked the end of a 16-month moon-mapping mission. The landing is part of China’s plan to land a vehicle on the moon to collect mineral samples in 2012.

[UPDATE] Wouldn't you know it, Australian astronomers using one of the world's largest telescopes captured the explosion as the Kaguya spacecraft slammed into the surface of the Moon. Click here for the full story.

What a coincidence, I made a "controlled crash" into the back of someone's car yesterday!

i just got this strange feeling something bad is about to happen... like when you see an asian behind the wheel of a moving vehicle...

ah... i kid... the more ppl we get up there in space the better it will be for all of us. gotta find oil or fuel somewhere...

It is pretty normal to smash a probe into whatever it is supposed to watch when it is done its job, less orbital crap that way.

I have to wonder what connotation people pick up by 'controlled crash' always being in quotations... Though I suppose 'intentional crash' would be more accurate, it is not like they could abort the crash at the last minute.

Hey that is the same probe that found one of the lunar landing sites is it not?

And Hanin find oil in space? LOL. By the time humans get to that point fossil fuels would be as ancient as using whale oil is today.

If anything we will get that hydrogen isotope from the moon for fusion reactors.

article :
...said JAXA spokesman Shinichi Sobue said...

say what?

it's funny you commented about the oil in space kami3k - my first thought was oil on the moon? lol - though I re-read his comment and I figured he could have meant like finding another planet with life on it so I let it slide. definitely right on that not being soon though.

"The crash [...] happened on the unlit, dark side of the Moon" (from the linked website)
What kind of an idiot thinks there is an "unlit, dark side of the moon".

There is a term for people who make xenophobic comments: bigots. Since when is it considered funny?

Lighten up, not like he is burning a cross in Asian peoples' yards or something. Maybe Asian people have never had anyone tell them that they can't drive. Maybe some Asians will read this thread and the world will be safer place for all drivers.

It is not for you to decide what others find offensive. Perhaps non-Asians will read this thread and the world will be a more tolerant and respectful place for all readers. See, that didn't feel too good, did it?

Why do they keep "crashing" stuff so close to earth, why not leave it on a trajectory towards the sun or something so it doesn't litter up our back yard.

Unless it doesn't have enough power to escape earths gravitational pull and enter the suns, but I don't know how much power that take.

I find young female blonde caucasions the worst drivers.
Or anyone on a cell phone...

It does make sense, but I agree that it should be thrown into the sun or something. Galactic littering...

Title: Japan Crashes Probe Into Moon.

So your saying the Japanese didnt crash a probe on the moon? Was it faked on a soundstage like the lunar landing in 69?

I'm with Grims... quit crashing junk into the moon (and into other sattelites.) There's enough natural junk in our orbit, we don't need to be adding more.

They could have used almost ANY trajectory to send the dying probe into deep space or even into the sun. Why am I okay with littering in deep space? Who's to say the race who finds it in 20 million years won't think it's kind of "cool" and come look for what's left of Earth.

You just need to edit out young, blonde, and caucasions...then you have it right...and almost all females have cell phones in their ear while driving (not just blonde ones) or heck I've seen em bust em out while at the pump to. I know where I am at least - 85% of the people you see on a cell phone in a vehicle - females. and obviously the phone call is more important than per say driving! "hoochie, the light is GREEN!!!" :P as for young like drivers before 20 - they're ALL terrible to just because they have no idea yet how many stupid drivers there are who won't get out of their way. old people are pretty dam bad to and drive into a lot more buildings oddly. but females overall definitely take the cake.
