Cameron Payne has played well as Paul’s replacement for the Suns, but nothing can top the presence of a player who has notched 119 playoff games and happens to be coming off one of the best playoff series of his long career. In the previous round against the Jazz, Paul led the Suns to a sweep averaging 25 points and 10 assists per game. In the series clinching game he scored 37 points, his second highest playoff point total.
While the Suns get a boost with Paul’s return, the Clippers are still waiting on Kawhi Leonard. In every series this postseason the Clippers have found themselves down two games to none, but each time they have found a way to dig themselves out of that deficit. The only difference in this series is Leonard isn’t available to grab a shovel. The two-time Finals MVP is still sidelined with a knee sprain.
The Clippers have been heavily reliant on Paul George in Leonard’s absence and the 10-year veteran has filled the void admirably. However, he is coming off a rough end to Game 2. George missed two key free throws that could have extended L.A.’s lead to three with eight seconds left in the game. Instead, the Suns went down the other end of the floor and got a miraculous game-winning dunk off an inbounds pass from Jae Crowder to Deandrea Ayton for the 104-103 Suns’ victory.
Los Angeles hosts Game 3 as 1-point home underdogs. The over/under is 219.5.
