Modern Warfare 2 for PC Locked Until Tomorrow

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

If you picked up a PC version of Modern Warfare 2 over the weekend you'll be disappointed to learn that the game is locked until tomorrow.

1up cites a tweet from Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling that says, "if you bought a retail copy on PC, you can play it on 11.10.09." The tweet was in response to a user who asked, "Will we be able to buy and play #MW2 for PC on 11.10.09 or do we have to wait until Friday for steam to unlock the discs?"

GameStop made headlines this weekend when it broke the November 10 street date for Modern Warfare 2. The retailer initially said it had Activision's permission to release the game ahead of Tuesday's launch but later changed its story when Activision denied the claims. GameStop now says the decision to release the game was a corporate one and says it is only selling MW2 in markets where the street date has already been broken.

Is anyone actually buying on the PC? They've completely killed any functionality whatsoever on the PC version.

MaDMagik :
I wasnt going to buy it but since the prices were slashed by half than I am buying it. I feel kinda sorry for those who got caught in the initial hype and pre-ordered it.

So I had to look up pricing, because if they really cut prices of the game in half I'm going to laugh in Activision's face.

However, I did find this.. and it's worth an LOL by itself:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 "Prestige Edition" $149 @ Amazon.com

I refuse to buy this game UNLESS they changed their decidion on no dedicated server support as well as customized maps.

I'll stick with CoD4 and Battlefield for now.

Why is it that video game developers treat their customers like children? no billy you can't play the game until we say so... but billy is a tax paying adult with two kids of his own! anal release date restrictions are for children and losers. Stop spending your money with control freak companies and they will dry up and make room for others that actually RESPECT their customers.

I agree. The problem with this decision is that it likely means you can't just install the game on a PC and play unless you have Internet & Steam. So potentially no single player without Internet/Steam either.

That part doesn't settle well with me.

LOL I know huh? Seriously though, I love how it says "real night vision goggles". My butt. Real night vision goggles cost a fortune. You're not getting real ones for $149, let alone $149 with a new game and other junk (display stand?! Seriously?!?!).

"Look man, not only did I buy MW2, but I have a display stand for the box it came in... I'm freaking AWESOME!"

I hate the fact that even if I download it from Steam I still pay full boxed price. I should get a discount for not having to pay for packaging or shipping to the retailers or the handling charges by the retailer. I like how some manufacturers are selling PC games for cheaper $39 while some have started to inflate the price to the $59 dollar. I managed to pre-order Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and Red Faction: Guerrilla for $34 that's almost half the price of MW2.

Nope, you can buy first gen night vision goggles (which is what comes with the MW2 package) for about $100USD from just about any online military surplus retailer. Heck you can buy a first gen Russian military surplus night vision scope with IR illuminator for $380!

I play PC versions of games instead of the console version cause there are so many mods out and you can extend the life of the game by many years. Now that activision has killed that, there really is no need to continue playing any games on any platforms. choice is why I live in america, and activision gave me a choice and I choose not to buy!

Yup, Thinkgeek has them for $89USD and if you replace the LEDs on a flashlight with IR LEDs then you can have some real fun.

Legitimate purchasers forced to wait to play a game they laid down legal tender to obtain... Meanwhile, pirates already completed the entire single-player campaign a week ago -- for free -- and are on to the next conquest...

I think you should heed your own advice.

And yeah, I was talking about prices in the UK where all supermarkets announced they will be selling the game for between £26-32, as opposed to £55 RRP. It was all a big scam IMO, first thing to be announced was the fact that its going to be a most expensive game so far, so people rushed and pre-ordered it at £43, now that pre-orders were shipped supermarkets announce their ultra-low prices. Seems a bit dodgy to me.

You know what's locked? My wallet...locked to Activision/IW. I am a dedicated PC gamer who hates consoles and won't buy a glorified PC-based console game with mouse support.

Never thought that I would abandon the CoD franchise, but i also didn't think they would abandon me. They got my 50 beans for CoD, then CoD:UO, then COD2, then CoD:MW, and then CoD:WaW. That's $250 spent on one franchise alone...and now I don't matter? Cya.

Dice will get my money when Bad Company 2 hits the streets.

No reason to buy it on PC, when I can rent it for Xbox 360. Sure I have to use a controller instead of my G5, but then I am not wasting $60 to play a 6 hr single player campaign (which I know will be awesome and all, but cmon 6 hrs!), then some terrible console style MP.

I will save that $60 for something else, hopefully Crysis 2!
