5. Apple iPod HiFi: An Imposing Dock

Disappointing design

One expects a better design from Apple than this. The iPod Hi-Fi is imposing, with a bulky appearance that suggests less-than-careful visual design. When connected, the iPod sticks out of the top of the unit. The iPod Hi-Fi comes with a remote control for navigation in the iPod’s menus. It’s quite intuitive to use.

Built to carry?

With its battery compartment and handles, the iPod Hi-Fi seems to have been designed for nomadic use. But do you see yourself strolling around with a 14.5 lb. (6.6-kilo) sound system under your arm? That shows the paradoxical nature of this model. What’s more, to use it on the go you need to put in a half-dozen D-cell batteries, for a playing time of six hours.

The overall sound quality is rather good, and the volume capabilities are appreciable. However, the bass is overblown. The result is highs that sound smothered. The sound isn’t natural.

Pros Cons
Ease of use Lack of functions
Auxiliary input port Price
Visual design
