A Round-up of All the Windows Phone 7 Devices
It's been a mental morning but we promised to provide more information on all of the phones announced this morning and we're men (and woman) of our word. We'll update with pictures just as soon as we can.
Microsoft may have sent out a press release announcing that ten Windows Phone 7 phones would be available before the end of the year, but Redmond definitely skimped on the details. On hand to help us out with specs are the major phone manufacturers and carriers already sending out press releases detailing their Windows Phone 7 offerings.
HTC
First up is HTC. The company this morning announced five phones running the new Microsoft OS. First and foremost is the HTC 7 Surround, which AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega mentioned at the Microsoft event this morning. The device packs a 3.8-inch 480 x 800 touchscreen display, a 1GHz CPU, 8GB of storage, 512MB of ROM, 576MB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p video capabilities. The most intriguing feature is that this device has a slide out speaker up top that provides Dolby Digital sound. This device will be available on AT&T from November 8 and is priced at $199.99.
Next is the Mozart, which will reportedly launch on T-Mobile on November 7. The device packs an 8-megapixel camera with Xenon flash, the same Dolby Digital sound as the Surround, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM and 576MB of ROM, and 8GB of internal storage.
The HTC 7 Pro is for those of us who just can't let go of buttons and demand a full, physical QWERTY keyboard. Packing a 3.7-inch display, this one is a Sprint device, which means you'll have to wait for that 'first half of 2011' release that Microsoft is remaining oh-so-vague about. Under the hood it's very similar to first two devices. It's got that 1GHz Snapdragon, 512MB of RAM, 576MB of ROM and the same 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p video capabilities. However, the Pro does pack twice the storage, with 16GB of onboard memory.
Next we have the 3.8-inch HTC 7 Trophy, which hasn't been confirmed for the U.S. just yet. Set for availability throughout Europe and in parts of Asia, the device is described by Gizmodo as the budget Windows Phone 7 device as it will be the cheapest of the lot when it launches. However, again, the specs seem pretty similar to what can be found in the other three Windows Phone 7 devices announced this morning. You're looking at a 1GHz Snapdragon, 8GB of storage, 576MB of ROM and 512MB of RAM and a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording.
Lastly, we have the heavily anticipated HTC HD7. Packing a 4.3-inch 480x800 display, this is the monster of the bunch. The phone is aimed directly at the mobile gaming crowd and features a little kickstand for stability. It boasts 512 MB of RAM, 576 MB of ROM, 16GB of internal storage, Bluetooth, WiFi and a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p video capabilities.
Samsung
Next up is Samsung. The company's Focus smartphone was also featured at the Microsoft press conference with AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega announcing it as one of the phones the network will have from launch. Available on November 8, some of you might know this phone as the Samsung Cetus. The Focus boasts a 4-inch WVGA super AMOLED display and, according to AT&T, is the skinniest Windows Phone 7 device yet at 9.9 millimeters. There isn't much available on this one yet, but considering Microsoft's press release said all Windows Phone 7 phones would boast the same Snapdragon CPU, we figure it's safe to assume a 1GHz Snapdragon.
The Samsung Omnia is another phone expected before the year is out. It's a little harsher than the Focus with sharper edges as opposed to those sexy, rounded curves. That said, it packs the same 4-inch display and 1GHz Snapdragon. It's got a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash and 720p video and the option for 8GB or 16GB of storage.
LG
LG is launching two Windows Phone 7 phones, the LG Optimus and the LG Quantum. The Quantum, like the Samsung Focus and the HTC 7 Surround, was featured in Ralph de le Vega's announcement this morning and features a full, physical QWERTY keyboard and a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU. Not much information on this one just yet, but it looks kind of similar to some of the lower-end, landscape sliders that we've seen from LG. That cheap look may put smartphone purchasers off, especially if the phone feels cheap in hand. Hard to know until we've played with it ourselves.
The LG Optimus was actually confirmed this morning ahead of the Windows Phone 7 launch when LG UK accidentally post images and details of the device to its UK blog. The Optimus packs a 3.8-inch WVGA 800 x 480 touchscreen, 16GB of onboard storage, a 5-megapixel camera with video capabilities mode, Bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi.
Dell
One of the bigger surprises of the morning is that Dell is among the partners that have phones primed and ready for launch. The Dell Venue Pro is a vertical QWERTY slide with a 4.1-inch display and will launch exclusively on T-Mobile. Interestingly, Engadget reports that the phone, previously known as the Lightning, won't be available from T-Mobile stores. Instead, Dell will be selling the device itself, along with handpicked retailers it deems worthy. Specs aren't known yet but a previous leak for the lightening suggested a 1GHz Snapdragon, a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, 1GB of flash with 512MB RAM, and 8GB of storage. T-Mobile hasn't been specific about the launch for this one, but gave the predictable 'in time for the holidays' time frame.

time to upgrade my HD2 to 7 w/ Froyo 2.2
Chart would be pretty? :-D
Checked these out and so far the HTC HD7 is making me slightly moist
My old contract is up in a couple of months, I reckon thats the one to go for
SO, HTC = NOOO slide-keyboard????
A full keyboard would be awesome; and, the click-function of the Storm is what's been keeping me with VZ wireless.
oh, and iphone, all models, are trash (I try to make this point every chance I get)... too sensitive and too easy to make mistakes on - clicks, mis-dials, ect. Few options, and all area application specific from having ONE button.
Choosing between T-Mobile and AT&T was a fail move by Microsoft. They are probably the 2 worst providers.
Why was this posted? There are 7 manufactures making the EXACT same phone. The "specs" that are laid out from MS means every phone has the same spec's minus the storage amount (8 or 16) and maybe a physical keyboard, but everything else is exactly the same..... What a waste of time...
Everyone welcome the new Iphone wannabe!

uh, you need to get laid.

what?
In addition, most WP7 phones will be available for $199.99 with new 2-year contract. --- AnandTech
WTF, They even copied Apple price and contract duration. Ballmer, you smug piece of crap, Wasn't it you laughing at Apple over 4 years ago over similar points.

This is standard price and contract duration...for all smart phones with all carriers
what?
Agreed, wtf you talking about?!
No 16MP default camera's ?? = no give them iGlass that breaks.

Looked at a few mobile phone websites this weekend and extremely disappointed at the limited "SPECS pages" they bother to post on their websites.
Almost makes you feel like buying a GMC car nice on website but nothing exists like that on the ground or 1% parts / specs in it when paying 3 times the website top of the range price for cheapest / weakest model available. Go Phoenix AZ.
Good example of lacking and needed on Mobile phone manufacturers websites :
http://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3
Or, lower on the page the search customization feature:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdama [...] 1&cpu=a312
Change CPU to snapdragon or any cpu + min speeds 1000Mhz.
You would think Mobile phone manf. would have something basic like" search by cpu" or search by wifi cpu 3G/4G/HSPDA/UMTS on both , manufacturers websites or Mobile phone networks sell phones page websites.
Shows you what retailers / manufacturers think of their "stupid no info needed" customers.
How about the dual core and ARM quad core A15 mobile phone cpu's any news when they will be default ?
Another 5 or 6 years for the USA to catch up to EU basic phones ?
http://nextbigfuture.com/2010/09/a [...] dcore.html
Amazing to see that the basic internal memory is still at 512mb and max is 8gb, come on for something newly released what gives ?
MicroSD is default 32gb and 64gb about to be released so makes all these phones well useless before they are released.
http://techpowerup.com/131997/Tran [...] orage.html
Maybe it is just this USA Phones that is this limited as is normal action for USA released phones.
Samsung Omnia Memory: 624Mhz USA / 800MHz EU CPU, 8GB / 16GB Flash + External Micro SDHC slot to 32GB
Or http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs [...] omnia_16gb
If they expect me to pay then they need to get their CA potheads together and build a usable, feature - spec filled device worth the $300 ~ $700 people are stupid enough to pay.
iPhone 3gs/g4 great idea's, no cooking clue what they where doing, Broken Glass screen, OS problems, signal issues and all the other 100 problems that $549CA/$799/GBP549 gets you for locked phone.
PS> when buying this "Win7 mobile" phones can I get rid / replace Win7 mobile and do android or anything else on it if I don't like Win7 mobile ?
Fact: all of them use Snapdragon CPU (most at least).
Question of the day: Why not Nvidia Tegra? Not strong enough? Licensing bad/costly? Could someone (Tom's) give some light?
Also, any info on the GPU side would be nice, so it would be possible to compare to iPhone and Androids.
what?
http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2010 [...] -features/
O forgot ARM Quad core A15 max freq 2500Mhz not kidding.
Clock Frequencies
Recommended Maximum Clock Frequency: 2500 MHz
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=cpu&i [...] a15_mpcore
what?
srry, for the clarification fail.
I meant, i am going to dual boot WM7 and Froyo 2.2
Wow! These phones aren't bad at all. Only if WinPho 7 wasn't that castrated! BTW MS claimed WinPho 7 is a consumer phone and not a business phone and all these phones with these external keyboards look like business phones to me.
You definitely have no vision!
All I can say is:
Balmer, Balmer, you suck!
I hope they'll release WinPho 8 soon and it will fix what the current version is lacking.
Choosing between T-Mobile and AT&T was a fail move by Microsoft. They are probably the 2 worst providers.
Really?
My current plan with T-Mobile is so cheap I can't find anyone else that can compare with the price I'm getting. Verison, AT&T, and Sprint all charge more for what I'm getting. The only plan that is currently appealing to me is Virgin mobile. They have one that has unlimited data, unlimited texts and 400 minutes for $25 a month with no contract. The only reason I didn't go that route is that you have to pay full price for a phone and thier coverage isn't very good. I also passed on the Boost mobile $50 a month unlimited everything plan because of crappy coverage.
I also think that another fail on Steve Balmer's part is the name: Windows Phone 7... What the hell does this device have in common with MS Windows????
I've just spent all of my free time pronouncing it!
It's a horrible name!
All other popular phones have some kind of cool name: iPhone, Android, WebOS, Palm OS, Symbian, Blackberry..... etc... but WTF is Windows Phone Seven....
@zingam
Erm, Microsoft doesn't actually make the phones they have no say what so ever if a keyboard should be attached or not, a bit premature to say that winpho 7 is a failure with out test driving it's features
as for the windows name, well MS calls the majority of it's OS software windows, why buck the trend, and BTW the iPhone OS is called iOS which im sure is alot more catchier then windows....
oh but you are right, Balmer sux

They named it windows phone 7 because their last Mobile OS was windows mobile 6.

All WP7 phones are cloud devices and have 25GB of storage (which can be epanded to exobytes at the flip of the switch if Microsoft were to get a wild hair.. )
Most of them sport the same CPU, or so it seems.
I don't want no crashing Windows on my phone.
MS = Fail
Long live Linux (Android)
Choosing between T-Mobile and AT&T was a fail move by Microsoft. They are probably the 2 worst providers.
Don't let the iphone users make you decide about At&t if you ever used any other smartphones on At&t you run into far fewer problems. So there is clearly something wrong with the iphone and depending where you live there is something wrong with At&t. But in general it depends where you live to how many problems you run into. If you're bay area like me Version tends to do better then At&t esp in SF. Due to heavy number of Iphone users tasking the towers in the area(everyone wants cell phone towers but no one wants them near them, esp in SF which is probably the worst place ever to use a iphone)
man the mobile market is so limited in hardware
whats wrong with them... imagine all your desktops say only having diff flavors of 3ghz
I wish they would do some turbo or boost or something diff like more cache or diff options number of cores etc...
they all look the same on the inside, why even go with MS? when current phones have same specs O_o
I am interested! Samsung Omnia and the HD7 are my top choices. not going back to the iphone crowd this time the 3g is my last. i hope there is way to put Froyo 2.2 on these devices if microsoft wp7 operating system is not my style which the interface doesn't look that exciting. so i wonder windows still get the blue screen even on a mobile device?

Battery life drives most of the decision making. If we could only get Moore's law to apply to battery power.
Why go MS? It's not the hardware man, it's the software. Ask yourself this: Why in 2010 are we running Windows 3.1 user interfaces on a 1+ Ghz processor? Can we really say that the WP7 phone UI is just an evolutionary step? iPhone to Android, sure. iPhone/Android UI to WP7 looks more revolutionary.
none of these phones look very appealing to me.
Remember when we used to say "Who the Frack is HTC?"...
Man they make a lot of phones.
i know every well the battery issue, im saying they are not working hard enough on diff architecture for the cpu/gpu and what not... thats what im saying, I guess things will change dramatically when intel joins the ball game, wish amd would too, and what about nvidia i dont get it why we are not seeing more of there integration as far as GPU goes...
obviously they can change diff specs of the architecture to meet different needs, for a fast UI vs 3d gaming setup its a whole diff world, but they havent been designing different phones yet to target different tasks as far as hardware goes
when I was making my statement I had already the pre-qualification that all of that would have to be done under the battery/power constraints
