Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders have officially opened! Set to release on June 5, 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been priced at AU$699.95 for the standalone Nintendo Switch 2 console. Alternatively, a bundle which includes the console and the newly announced game Mario Kart World will also be available at launch, priced at AU$769.95.

The Switch 2 will initially launch in only one colour, Black, and with 256GB of internal storage. Surprisingly, expandable storage will be supported exclusively through microSD Express cards, not standard microSD cards.

Along with details about the new console, the latest Nintendo Direct event showcased upcoming games, including first-party standouts like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza and Kirby Air Riders. From Software's Elden Ring will also release on Switch 2, along with a new title from the developer titled The Duskbloods.

Additionally, Nintendo revealed that GameCube games like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and F-Zero GX would be coming to Nintendo Switch Online for the Switch 2, along with a new wireless GameCube controller — ideal for when Super Smash Bros. Melee eventually lands on the service.

Given the high levels of anticipation surrounding the release of the Switch 2, we think it's a good idea to pre-order the console at your earliest convenience — even if stock seems to be readily available at the moment.

Will Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders sell out?

Released in 2017, the current Nintendo Switch has so far sold over 150 million units worldwide, making it the third-highest selling console in history behind the Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2.

Given the console's age and the recent surge of Switch 2 leaks, anticipation for a successor is at fever pitch, we expected the Switch 2 to sell out quickly in Australia. However, it seems that for now, stock is readily available — unlike in the US, where customers must keep an eye out for restock alerts.

Nevertheless, pre-ordering a unit from major Australian retailers like JB Hi-Fi, EB Games, and Big W is the best way to secure the eagerly awaited Switch 2 console. We recommend keeping an eye on this page for further information, and also monitoring each retailers' online homepages for stock availability.

Nintendo has a history of innovation, with each new console release often showcasing a unique feature, such as a new control scheme or display function, that shapes the gameplay of its first-party titles.

However, the company is taking a more conservative approach with its latest console — this is the first time in Nintendo's history that it’s used a numerical sequel naming convention for one of its consoles, signalling that the Switch 2 will be an upgraded version of the original Switch, rather than a dramatic reimagining.

And we’re totally cool with that! The current Switch’s graphical capabilities have been outdated since, well, launch, and we’re very excited about the prospect of a new Nintendo console that doesn’t feel like it’s stuck in the past.

The Switch 2, has a redesigned dock, larger display, magnetic Joy-Con controllers and a black, blue and orange colour scheme. Additionally, the updated Joy-Cons now include an optical sensor for mouse-style controls. In terms of Switch 2's specs, the console has an LCD display that's capable of HDR and 120Hz in handheld mode. In docked mode, the Switch 2 will output at 4K resolution.
