The Last of Us Part 2: Everything We Know So Far

Perhaps the most exciting game in Sony's upcoming slate of exclusives for the PlayStation 4 is The Last of Us Part 2, a long-awaited sequel to the 2012 action adventure survival game.

It's been a long wait, but we finally have some information about who you can play as, how violent the game is, and some of its themes. We're still waiting on a release date, though, so there's still plenty more to learn.

What is The Last of Us Part 2 about?

We know little about the game's plot. But while the first game centered around a budding relationship between father and daughter archetypes, the game's director, Neil Druckmann, has suggested that Part 2 will focus on revenge.

Revenge for who or what? We don't know yet, though some eagle-eyed fans have pointed out that in the latest gameplay video, we see Ellie with a bracelet that Dina, who she was previously seen kissing, had been wearing.

Where can I watch the latest trailer?

Right here. At E3 2018, developer Naughty Dog dropped a nice long video that shows some of the game's brutality.

When is The Last of Us Part 2's release date?

Sony and developer Naughty Dog have yet to announce a release date for The Last of Us Part 2. That may mean that it won't be due out for awhile, and some fans suspect it could even be a launch title for the PlayStation 5.

Who do you play as?

Druckmann stated to IGN that Ellie is the only playable character in the game. Some fans are skeptical that it might be a cover, but it's what we have to go on so far. In the first game, players spent most of their time as Joel, though in the "Left Behind" DLC, Ellie was the playable character.

Where is Joel?

Good question. Beyond the first trailer, we haven't seen him. In that trailer, he asks Ellie if she's "really gonna go through with this." One mention in the E3 2018 trailer of Ellie's "old man" seems to refer to Joel, so he's probably still alive.

Will The Last of Us Part 2 have multiplayer?

Yes. The studio told GameSpot that multiplayer, including the popular Factions mode from the first game, will return. Naughty Dog has provided no further details.

Can I pre-order The Last of Us Part 2?

Without any sense of a release date, many retailers aren't accepting pre-orders yet. GameStop doesn't have a page for it yet, and while Amazon does, the game is listed as unavailable.

Best Buy also has a page, which you can use to sign up for notifications when the game will be available.
