Zynga's cost-cutting has extended from layoffs to actual products. 11 games got the axe and players are asked to move on.
The games that are no longer available are:
FishVille
Forestville
Mafia Wars 2
Mafia Wars Shakedown
Mojitomo
Montopia
PetVille
Treasure Isle
Vampire Wars
Word Scramble Challenge
The shutdown had only a minor effect on Zynga's Facebook user account, which currently stands at just above 270 million active users. However, Zynga does not own the most popular app on Facebook anymore. Farmville 2 ranks behind Instagram with 43.5 million versus 44.3 million users.
The company has 25 casual/social games in its portfolio left. The next game to go is Indiana Jones Adventure World on January 14.
The shutdowns of games were announced on their respective Facebook pages. Gamers were offered incentives such as "complimentary bonus package in one of either CastleVille, ChefVille, FarmVille 2, Mafia Wars, or YoVille" to keep playing Zynga's games. At the end of October, Zynga announced a cost-cutting plan, which included closure of its Boston office as well as more than 100 pink slips at its Austin office.
I started playing Mafia Wars 2 once out of curiosity. The game is very infantile, the isometric cartoonish graphics are disgraceful and Zynga is so incessantly bitchy about inviting friends and buying their internal currency that I removed it after less than half an hour of play. I honestly don't know how can so many people put up with this kinda stuff.
