This camera is as rugged as point-and-shoot photography gets. We’re pretty sure the WG-1 is more adventurous than you are. It is waterproof up (or should we say down?) to 33 feet for two hours, shockproof up to five feet, crush-proof (up to 220 pounds), cold-proof (to 14 degrees Fahrenheit), and dust-proof. The 2.7-inch LCD on the back is covered with anti-reflective coating so you’ll be able to see what you shot even in bright sunlight. It comes with an outdoor-friendly woven fabric strap and carabiner to attach the camera to a backpack or other piece of equipment (the camera only weighs 5 ounces). That’s all on the outside.
On the inside the WG-1 has a 14 megapixel sensor and a 5x optical zoom. It shoots 720p video at 30 frames per second, which can be sent to an HDTV screen via the HDMI port. Our favorite software feature is the inclusion of lots of different Macro lighting modes for close up shots (Pentax calls this Digital Microscope, and if you happen to set your sights on some wriggling fauna, you’ll definitely feel like a wildlife biologist when using this camera).
