Newbeem's Smart Outlet Controls Your Lights

For years, users have been managing and protecting their house through simple devices like power timers, dimmers and surge protectors. However, buying all the devices at once can be rather expensive and annoying to manage. That's why Toronto-based startup Newbeem has created a smart outlet that allows users to do all of the above via a wireless app.

The Newbeem outlet is a simple device that users can plug into an everyday outlet in order to protect and manage their electric devices. Any light device that is plugged into the Wi-Fi controlled port can be put on a timer or dimmed via the Newbeem mobile app. The other two ports work like normal ports.

The Newbeem smart outlet is compatible with any device that uses incandescent, CFL, fluorescent and LED bulbs for up to 200 watts. The smart outlet also protects against lightning strikes and wiring faults. If it detects an excessive surge of energy, the smart outlet will protect all attached devices from overloading.

The lights are controllable from anywhere on earth via the Newbeem app. The app also lets users track their light's energy consumption levels, reduce energy usage by dimming lights, turn off lights via pre-set conditions and more. The app's connection to the smart outlet is protected by a 128bit AE encrption

Currently, Smartbeem is trying to raise $20,000 on Kickstarter. The first 200 backers can preorder the Smartbeem for $25. The next 500 backers will get it for $30, the next 500 backers pay $34, and so on. Smartbeem also offers options for preordering 2, 3, 10 and 100 smart outlets. Smartbeem expects to deliver all the smart outlets by October 2014. 

The Newbeem smart outlet is a practical and affordable smart home accessory that has a lot of potential. Not only is it reasonably priced, but it's a simple way for users to enter the smart home gadget market. However, we're unsure how this device will mix with other smart home systems, or how secure its Wi-Fi connection is.
