Averatec AV1050: A small, light, affordable laptop with good battery life too?
Until now, small laptops weighing under four pounds were so expensive that they were only attractive for the well-to-do. Those times are coming to an end, though. Enter Averatec, a company with a goal of bringing "business features to the consumer". Putting its money where its mouth is, the company has now released the Averatec AV1050, a laptop with a 10.8" WXGA display. Measuring a mere 10.4 x 1.4 x 8" (264 x 35.5 x 203mm), this little unit can fit into virtually any bag or case. Also, since it only weighs 3.62 lbs (1.6 kg), it's not going to feel like a dead weight pulling on the shoulder strap of the optional carrying case.
However, the most surprising aspect of the AV1050 may well be its price, as the little laptop costs only $1,300. Don't let the low price fool you into thinking that Averatec had to cut corners when choosing the components, though. The AV1050 is based on Intel's Centrino Technology and uses a Pentium M 733 ULV running at 1.1 GHz, a combination that virtually guarantees long battery life and easy WLAN connectivity.
A side-by-side comparison with a 15.4" laptop shows how small the AV1050 really is.
Of course, a laptop of this size is not going to break any performance records. However, the AV1050 has more than enough power under the hood to handle typical business applications. Besides, the main raison d'être of small laptops is high portability coupled with long battery life - not raw processing power.
Read on to find out how the AV1050 fared in the real world, to see if it could stand up to the critical eyes of our testers, and whether it lived up to the high expectations we got from our first impressions.
