This Case Cures the iPhone's Biggest Weakness

There's a lot to like about Apple's iPhone, but the limited amount of storage on the base model phones isn't one of them. SanDisk hopes to ease the strain on your photos, music, and videos with a case that adds on extra gigabytes to the iPhone 6 and 6s.

SanDisk's iXpand Memory Case is a hard plastic case that fits around the iPhone 6 or 6s, while also adding anywhere from 32GB to 128GB of extra storage. Prices start at $60 for the 32GB version, with 64GB ($100) and 128GB ($130) also available. The Memory Case, which comes in grey, red, sky and mint colors, plugs into the phone's Lightning port.

To take full advantage of the storage features, though, you'll need to download the iXpand case's companion app, which automatically sorts your photos, videos and music You can also set up the app to automatically back up photos and videos from your phone's camera roll. SanDisk says you can also password-protect any files stored on the case.

The iXpand Memory Case isn't the first iPhone add-on that's tried to tackle the limited storage woes of Apple's smartphone. Mophie offers the Space Pack, which tacks on additional storage into a battery case. But that also means a higher price tag: the 32GB Space Pack for the iPhone 6 and 6s costs $150. SanDisk does offer a battery with it's iXpand Memory Case, but that's a $40 option.

While some iPhone users will doubtlessly welcome the extra space SanDisk's case gives them, it's not the perfect solution for storage-starved iPhone users. If you have an iPhone Plus, for example, the iXpand Memory Case won't fit your phone. And owners of older iPhones or the new iPhone SE are shut out, too.

There's also the matter of cost. If you're in the market for a new iPhone, the 64GB iPhone 6s costs just $100 more than the 16GB model — the same amount you'd pay for the 64GB iXpand Memory Case. So the add-on's primary appeal will be for owners of older iPhone 6 and 6s models who feel constricted by the storage limit on their phone and aren't planning an upgrade to a new iPhone this fall.

Apple may be getting the message about the iPhone's stingy storage, as the company is reportedly going to boost the base level of storage to 32GB on this fall's iPhone 7. Until that happens, though, the iXpand Memory Case can give your older iPhone 6 and 6s a little room to grow.
