Cisco Joins Web-TV Battle on Behalf of Cable Cos

The Wall Street Journal reports that Cisco will be launching its own internet-connected TV in Las Vegas this week. Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal reports that Cisco’s endeavour is an effort to "help cable operators fend off emerging rivals like Apple Inc. and Google Inc." Cisco will do so by selling the boxes through cable operators instead of directly to consumers.

WSJ sources say Cisco will announce its set-top box, which will combine elements of online video services with live, on-demand and recorded television programming, later today. When asked about the rumors, Cisco said its CES announcement wouldn’t focusing on any one thing in specifically.
