But he's not the only star player with something to prove today. Brazil's Neymar is also without a major trophy to his name, having been absent through injury for the team's successful 2019 tournament.
As if to confirm that Neymar and Messi are the star attractions here, the organizers today named the pair the players of the tournament. “It is not possible to choose only one (best) player because this tournament has two of them,” a statement said.
Nor is that unfair: Messi has four goals and five assists, while his rival has two goals and three assists.
Both will play today, obviously, but Brazil will be without the suspended Gabriel Jesus for a second game. They're unchanged from the semi-final win over Peru.
For Argentina, defender Cristian Romero has returned from injury and starts as one of three changes to the defense; Montiel and Acuña also come in. In midfield, Paredes is preferred to Rodríguez and in attack, Di María returns in place of Gonzélez.
