Sony Restricts PlayStation 3 3D Games to 720p

By - Source: Tom's Guide US

If you're just dying to play 3D games on the PlayStation 3, you might be interested in the latest tidbit of information Sony let loose about 3D gaming on its console.

Sony on Friday confirmed that, when playing 3D games, the image on the screen will be limited to a resolution of 720p. Joystiq reports that even games that usually run at 1080p will be scaled down to fit this guideline.

Though the PS3 is capable of 1080p 3D playback, Sony's Simon Benson said that the higher resolution would mean sacrificing the 60 fps available with 720 (compared to the 24 fps for Blu-ray movies). Benson went on to assure his audience that most gamers probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, as trained computer graphics artists barely could.

If I want 3D, I'll go outside and yell at the kids to get off my lawn.

Yup, consoles are really on par with PC's as their fanboys keep telling us. Or not...

This proves yet again that even a mid end PC can easily outperform any console on the market, not to mention it has the ability to do more than gaming and playing films.

any PC gamer in the world could tell the difference between 720 and 1080 res. its the most glaringly obvious change you could possibly make to an image. what a stupid thing for this 'professional' to say.

considering there are hardly any 1080p games out though, i don't see why this needed an announcement. we already know that 3d uses additional resources, and games need to drop down one resolution to support it. (1080p games go down to 720, and 720 to 480)

so was this just in case someone makes a game at 2560 resolution? and we are all disappointed we cant use it in 3d?

i understand the console gaming market is a 'simple' one, but im pretty sure this is a new level of dumb.

Ill take 720P. Hell of a lot better than what Microsoft is offering in the 3D market.

okay now they are doing 3d... In order to do so they need to cut the res down to 720p. I'm guessing on a 1080p TV it will be all pixelated but in 3d. Does anyone else see a few problems?

runngun1283most 1080p televisions arent actually 1080p native, they just support the format through downscaling the image to their true native 720p displays. This is where you wouldnt notice the difference. You were never really watching 1080 in the first place. Sadly this concept will be lost on most people because the sticker on their tv set says "1080p!!!!11" and they just accept it.

    What?

wait wait what?? You lost me. When its labeled 1080p i assume its 1920 by 1080 and yes it can downscale to 720p but you also will get distorted images. Think of it as a LCD monitor you have it at 1680 by 1050 then drop it down to 1440 by 900 its going to look boxy and not as sharp so i am not sure what your talking about.

consoles are shit anyway so who cares, and the ps3 or xbox aint good enough to cut any game really thats why they always turn down the quality of everything they put out.

the PC rules, simple as that and enough said
