See-through Screen Paves Way for Futuristic Phones

By - Source: Designboom | B 0 comment

TDK's 'UEL476' is a translucent see-through screen that is now in mass production and designed specifically for use in new mobile devices. Although it may not be completely transparent, this screen opens the door for various design possibilities for futuristic phones such as the sexy transparent Aston Martin concept, or the weather transforming Window Phone. The UEL476 screen is a 2.4-inch QVGA (320 x 240) display that utilizes state of the art passive matrix organic electroluminescent (EL) technology that makes it the world's first and closest to transparent display. Operable in temperatures ranging from -20 to 85 degrees celsius and a durable form, this screen is versatile enough to be used in modern mobile devices looking to get an edge in stylistic design. Of course the downside to having this nearly transparent screen would mean a drop in image quality and resolution. Perhaps with further development we will see in the near future an entirely transparent screen with resolutions comparable to the beautiful screens currently in the smartphone industry.
