This bicycle lighting system hopes to make bicyclists more noticeable.
Riding around on a bicycle in the middle of the night can be a dangerous thing, especially on the late weekends when there may be drunk drivers out and about. Despite all of the precautions available, there are still a number of unfortunate bicycle-related accidents occurring yearly. Hoping to make night riding a little bit safer, designers Ethan Frier and Jonathan Ota have started Project Aura.
Bicycle reflectors and flashing lights certainly help drivers see bicyclists, but the Aura lighting system is sure to grab the attention of all drivers. By utilizing RGB LEDs attached to the inside of the rims of their wheels, the designers were able to create a color changing light-wheel that indicates when a bicyclist is slowing down or at cruising speed.
In addition, the kinetic energy generated from peddling can be used to power the LEDs, meaning bikers won't have to worry about maintenance at all. We'd say this lighting could be huge for getting bicyclists noticed. As you can see from the video, it's hard to not notice something as flashy and cool as Frier and Ota's lighting system.
