Trend Micro Bringing Anti-Malware to Android

Friday security firm Trend Micro said its bringing anti-malware and other protective measures to the Android platform starting with the release of its Mobile Security for Android app. Already available on the Android Market, the app is free to download and install, but comes with a 30-day free trial.

"Trend Micro Mobile Security uses Trend Micro anti-malware technology to protect your mobile device from the latest security threats," reads the product description on the Market. "You can create custom filtering lists to screen or block unwanted calls or messages, and browse the Internet safely using the Web Reputation and Parental Control features."

The company said that the app is backed by the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network and its 20-year history of protecting customers from identity theft, data loss and other web threats. It also claims to be the only company that uses cloud-based security intelligence to protect Android devices from the latest threats, processing over 1.2 terabytes of data and 50 million IP addresses and URLs on a daily basis.

"Leveraging a unique, cloud computing architecture, [the Smart Protection Network] is powered by a global network of threat intelligence censors, email, Web, and file reputation technologies that work together to dramatically reduce infections," the company said.

System requirements for the Mobile Security app include Android OS 2.x, 4 MB of storage space, 7 MB of free memory and the obvious Internet connection. After the 30-day free trial, the app will cost a meager $3.99 to use.

In addition to Mobile Security, Trend Micro also offers a preview app on the Android Market called SafeSync, a data synchronization and storage service that uses cloud technology to back-up and restore your files and photos. The app is free to download and install, and offers a 30-day free trial. After those 30 days are up, the service will cost $59.99 per year.
