Rumor: Xbox 720 and PS4 Appearing at E3 2012
There probably won't be an actual appearance, but rather an outline of things to come for the next generation consoles in order to put a little fear into Nintendo.
While we're currently obsessing over CES 2012, the rumor mill is also peering six months ahead to June where the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 will reportedly offer a small brief appearance.
The news arrives after Nintendo insiders claimed last week that Satoru Iwata & Co. is building Apple-like app and ebook stores for the upcoming Wii U console. There's a strong possibility that these two features will be Nintendo's big selling point during the gaming tradeshow this summer. There's even talk that Nintendo will provide solid launch details, including a lineup of games available at day one.
But for the record, we actually expect to see some kind of hint about Microsoft's console next week as the company talks about Windows 8 and likely Windows Phone 8. The CEA even hinted to this focus last month after Microsoft said that it was pulling out of the show, claiming that the Redmond company will focus "quite a bit on Windows Phone and its Xbox / entertainment story."
A leaked Microsoft roadmap published back in October claims that Microsoft will release the Xbox SDK while announcing the 3rd generation Kinect titles during E3 2012. The third-generation Xbox console isn't slated to make a full debut until E3 2013. With that in mind, consumers should expect a mere taste in June that will likely focus on gaming across the three Microsoft platforms, and a release of the next-gen Xbox SDK so that developers can get started. According to MCV, third-party publishing sources claim the firm had signaled to partners that it will detail its next-generation console plans during the show.
As for the PlayStation 4 news, Sony executives have reportedly made it clear to third parties that it will "not be left behind" in the new generation. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan even previously admitted that he wants to avoid allowing Microsoft to get the jump on the PlayStation 4, indicating an eagerness within Sony to get the next console out ASAP.
Right now it's just too early to tell what Microsoft and Sony plan to do in June. However the two Nintendo rivals will likely offer a few goodies to nibble on in order to steal some thunder away from the Wii U launch slated for the end of 2012.

they are really going to use the name "xbox 720"?
they are really going to use the name "xbox 720"?
Would you prefer Xbox 360 2?
Generally all you see on the first E3 showing of any new console is a bunch of fancy cinematics running on an extremely expensive Computer running some form of their SDK...
In other words, you'll see movies about games that may/may not come out in 2 years... On hardware that only exists on paper.
My bet is quad/hex core CPU's for both consoles - IBM again
ATI graphics in both consoles - probably current gen strength (6000 series). Doesn't sound like that great of a thing, but considering what the current generation is running, a 6000 series GPU is about 4 times more powerful than what's in the systems right now.
All the 'standards' 1080p, 3D, etc.
I'm sure MS will be pushing something kinect-esque on the 720, Not sure what Sony will have in mind but I'm sure it will be 3D related.
Bah, consoles.
So it's going to be a history repeat? 2 years of nice graphics + 5 additional years of outdated gfx.. ? I really hope these new consoles at least allow to assign keyboard keys in any game!!! I still don't understand why is it not done on present generation consoles !?!?
Nintendo "We've got a product with a closed ecosystem and limited features, like Apple. But at least we did it first, like Apple! It's even white, like Apple!"
XBox "Our products will be out next year, offer a full media experience, and interact with our mobile Windows 8 devices."
Sony: "Our products will be out next year like XBox, offer a media experience like XBox, and interact with our mobile devices like Xbox. We also have a list of extra features!...-coughthatwewillremoveatourconveniencecough-
Nintendo sells another 100 million. 2014 MS and Sony will have tablet controllers.
The most interesting sight at E3 will be seeing what Nintendo is packing for their release lineup. An empty plate will end with a drop in their stock. Let's hope they learned their lesson.
they are really going to use the name "xbox 720"?
I hope not. Maybe XBOX 1080.
and the consoles take another babystep towards being exactly what they are, crappy versions of PCs with very limited hardware and restrictions.
we may not now the actual name till E3 of 2013 for now its just has a project name which is xbox 720, you should know by now, thats pretty standard for any device/invention.
Not bad, Xbox 360 will stand for near 8 years if it launches in mid 2013. PS3 and Wii 7 years.
This has been the longest console cycle I have seen.
Why not use the name Xbox 720? Wasn't it made up by xbox fans on the internet? Or would you rather they say 'F u' to the community and make up some shitty name like the Wii. I would love to see them show they are making this console for the fans by atleast keeping the name Xbox 720.
Console gaming... lol

So basically you think that they will be the exact same machine, just different branding? I would be flabbergasted if both machines used the same hardware manufacturers. I have to believe they wouldn't that to happen. I'm sure MS has signed an exclusive contract with ATI for this GPU to give them a competitive edge. I could be wrong but it's hard to believe otherwise.
They should allow for cross-platform online gaming between PS4/Xbox720.
(as long as they are the same titles, many of which are simply just ported to the other console(s))
I know this won't happen, but I can dream of multi-platform online gaming.

6000 series only 4 times as powerful as the hardware in Xbox 360 and PS3 which came out 6 years ago? That sounds disappointing.
Microsoft will try to get a couple month jump on the GPUs available to PC gamers, and have a GPU exclusively made for them.
So if it is released xmas 2013, this means something between the 8000 and 9000 ATI series. PC gamers will get their hands on faster GPUs (9000 series) in early 2014.
I really think it's funny how everyone goes completely insane over all these rumors and speculation stories here on Toms and other sites as though they are actually facts about future consoles, that exist in name only, or only on paper.
As for those who keep saying "my PC is sooo much better" give it a rest! Yes your PC is much better you can upgrade and tweak your hardware every time something new comes out, you can water cool the components etc. . Consoles are designed to last a specified amount of time with a given hardware spec, they don't have anywhere near the overhead in regards to the OS as your precious PC does, so they can use slower (compared to a PC) components to output graphics at a specific frame rate, and quality level.
If AMD supposedly gets the contracts for these consoles wouldn't they make alot of money on this?
Rule of thumb: If it exists in name only or on paper only as a rumor, it's probably just that. A rumor. I don't doubt another XBOX and Sony console are due soon; the 360 and PS3 have been out for several years now. If there is a new console coming in 2013 then it's definitely still in the planning stages right now. It takes YEARS to make these machines, people. I don't think it's going to be ready by 2013. Maybe 2014 or something. Development of the technology and better processing, rendering, etc. takes a while.
I have to disagree, consoles can be repaired and tweaked just as PCs can, beoza. I know people who have modded their old XBOX consoles, people who have given them larger hard drives and stuff, etc. With how much these machines can do it's not surprising that there's a community out there devoted to tweaking machines. And obviously, consoles can have parts replaced up to and until the console is rendered obsolete and support's dropped - just like with PCs.
Consoles are supposed to last a specified time? Have to disagree there too, sorry. I have an SNES in storage that still works more than a decade later, and the only reason it can't work now is because TV hookup methods have changed. My best friend has her N64 she got the day that console came out, and it still plays just fine. Until recently my XBOX was hooked up to my downstairs TV and it hasn't had a single problem; the only reason it's not playable now is because my XBOX 360's hooked up there. I bet you'll find more than a few NESes, Genesii, and Megadrives at your local gaming warehouse too, so I don't even wanna hear how "consoles only last so long". The components themselves do, yes, but as long as you can find replacement parts and treat the machine gently, the console's good to go.
i only play arcade/console games on pc when they become available via emulators. you get hd graphics, insane fps, graphic enhancements, no physical cartridge or disc to damage/wear out, and so much more. who cares about consoles?
@Invisible_Jester89
Aparently you didnt read what I said "you can upgrade and tweak your hardware every time something new comes out". That last part is the key "every time something new comes out" you can upgrade a PC. Cant do that on a console now can ya? There's a very big difference between modding a console and upgrading a PC. For one modding a console voids your warranty whereas it doesnt on a PC. Two modding a console you can only do so much, things like CPU, Ram, Video chips are all integrated into the circuit board, PC's these are seperate components.
What part of this do you not understand "Consoles are designed to last a specified amount of time with a given hardware spec," What I meant and was referring to was a consoles life span, you know that specified time between a consoles launch and when they bring out something new. Sorry if I didnt make that any clearer before. Sure consoles last a lot longer than they make games for them, heck I have an old Atari 2600 floating around somewhere that still works. And the connections change on the TV? I have a 32 HD TV that has co-ax, RCA, S-VHS, Component, and 4 HDMI ports on it plus USB, I can hook all of my consoles if I wanted, I don't watch TV on it it's just a gaming TV, and it supports 1080p/i. No I dont need bigger 32" works just fine, tried on my 46" and the jaggies become more noticeable.
By the way I grew up with those early consoles like the Atari. My first console can be seen here http://www.pinkgorillagames.com/re [...] g_1975.php It's the last image before the youtube videos called Atari Ultra PONG Doubles, The Sears Tele-Games version is called Pong Sports IV, which is what I still have and it still works. You younger people should feel lucky you didnt grow up hearing sounds like that Atari guitar Toms had a story on produced.
Oh and yes I did get that Pong game console new in 1977.
I can agree with the points beoza is trying to make. Another topic to worry about is what happens when your older consoles break and you can't ever play the games for it again? I see that as the biggest problem.

...or when a manufacturer stops providing the service for game they now deem redundant and turn off the servers (online play games of course). At least with my old Atari 2600 (yep, I still have mine too!) i can play it as long as I have means of hookin up it's coax lead to my TV somehow.
This time Sony better get the backwards compatibility right.
Totally agree with you on that one Djhg2000. New consoles should be completely backwards compatible with their older systems. If a group of individuals can create emulators for the pc that run nearly 99% of the games for a given system with virtually 0 glitches then the OEM company should be able to make their systems 100% compatible. After all it's their frickin hardware to begin with. If you cant figure it out then get someone who can Sony!
Sony never learns their lesson according to history and keep releasing one platform after the other not worth its money for weel over a year or two. I can see me buying on release date a new xbox but not a PS console unless ofc Sony finally releases a console based on games and not on what I wanna pay for ( aka Blu-Ray ). Yeah MS is foccused currently on making it a damn entertainment center but Im purely talking about release value.
) but owning a 360 since day one and a ps3 for almost 2 years isnt something id change ( well the PS3 is for exclusives only since only and multiplatforms suck on it.. Means I have it only for like 3-4 IPs :S )

Don't get me wrong, im a nut PC gamer ( and high end hardware lover
I can see a new xbox announcement but a PS console would be kinda stupid since Sony will surely take the least a year longer for a new PS. That's purely according to math and whats best for their wallets ofc. Than again I can remember how many years before release Sony was teasing all the retards that had nbo clue about gaming than what Sony showed them believing that even that famous FFVII remake video was real. So funny... Xbox still sells like crazy and so does the PS3 nowmore so I can see an xbox released in 2 years or 2013 fall and a PS4 a year later.
Personally? I would love a new console to be released Monday morning and go buy it. I need to buy me something new to play till i go to sleep since I play Swtor and Skyrim from work all night long
Unless these so called next generation consoles are going to bring true virtual reality to the masses I can't find anything interesting in rehashing the same god damn concept since the NES was released when I was a little kid. Nintendo seems to be the only one actually interested in innovating the way people play games while Microsoft and Sony are basically just creating dumbed down PCs with a controller.
[citation]So basically you think that they will be the exact same machine, just different branding? I would be flabbergasted if both machines used the same hardware manufacturers. Same manufacturer yes, same end product? No. IBM manufactured both the 3-core power PC for the 360 and the 7 core cell processor for the PS3. Two completely different architectures, but from the same supplier.
ATI has proven themselves in the console market. Nintendo is going on 3 generations with ATI now, and MS bailed on nvidia after the original xbox in favor of ATI. Sony may stick with nvidia, but I highly doubt it.
ATI, in the console market has a better track record and frankly more experience than nvidia. So I really wouldn't be suprised to see all 3 consoles this generation go ATI... Nintendo and MS are pretty much a guarantee.
Mainly what I wanna see from Sony is a redesign of their analog sticks. Once that rubberized grip crap starts wearing down they become slicker that sh--! And that curved shape on top doesn't help matters. And Sony...quit telling me my PS3 "only does everything", it wont do my homework for my computer IT classes, or make me a cheese burger!
I doubt they come out @ 2013 with have the same level of performance as a high end PC in 2013.... oh wait. I should say 2012....oh wait 2011?
