Netflix Moving to Cable?
The rumor mill has been churning that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has been wooing major cable providers to warm up to the idea of bringing Netflix to cable. Strange, considering that this was the same man who had been so gung-ho about “cutting the cord”from TV just a few months back. Why the sudden change in song and dance? Well, it’s a money thing.
As of late, Netflix has been facing increasing competition from rival streaming services such as Hulu and Amazon. It probably also doesn’t help that cable services are starting to provide streaming services as well, Comcast’s Xfinity Streampix being a prime example. It’s only understandable that Netflix would want to retaliate sticking it to cable and bringing their services over.
Whether or not Netflix the cable channel will ever come to light still remains to be seen. Netflix still has to work out a lot of new licensing deals with their content providers, considering most of their content is not their own and is being streamed under the agreement that the content would never touch a cable TV box. It would take months for Netflix to work out these new deals while attempting to bring out unique offerings of its own that would be able to compete with the shows that cable channels like HBO and AMC is providing. I think Netflix might just be a bit hard-pressed to find a show that’ll be able to compete with the likes of “A Game of Thrones” and “The Walking Dead.”-Catherine Cai
