OnePlus just revealed the name and official operating system of its upcoming OnePlus 2 smartphone running OxygenOS through a couple of contests. If you're looking to win a free trip to Hong Kong, and to be the first to get hands-on the new device, it's time to enter. You only have until June 15 to shoot some compelling video and smartphone photography.
The OnePlus 2's new OS should fix touchscreen issues that some users of the first phone have noticed. The new phone will also receive an Android 5.1 Lollipop update. These will be made available for the OnePlus One, but only after the newest phone launches.
Like the OnePlus One, fans will be able to buy the OnePlus 2 by invitation only. However, OnePlus stopped the invite rule about a year after the first phone came out. We're curious how long the OnePlus One will remain for sale, and how long it will take OnePlus to loosen the restrictions on the new model's purchase. It was believed that the launch of the new model would be June 1st, and yet we are still waiting. An Ask me Anything on Reddit revealed that the OnePlus 2 would come out in the second or third quarter of 2015.
The contests OnePlus is running have some pretty nifty prizes. The winners of a new video contest will be the person who shoots the most compelling, passionate and personal OnePlus story. The annual Photo Mania competition requires unedited, no-filter smartphone photos from Instagram. The company will select its top 10 based on popularity and technical ability. The community will vote on the final winner. This year's winner will also be part of a “secret project” involved with the launch of the new OnePlus 2. Both winners will get an all-expenses-trip to Hong Kong. Both contests only run through June 15.
Last year, we gave the OnePlus One four stars and earned an Editors' Choice award for its great front and rear cameras, more than 13 hours of battery life, and its $299 unlocked price tag. On Monday, OnePlus announced that the OnePlus One price dropped to $249. According to Android Authority, the OnePlus 2 may be priced around $400, largely based on a poll on Weibo by CEO Pete Lau.
