Alienware Alpha Review

Combining the UI of a gaming console with the power of a PC, the Alienware Alpha is a force to be reckoned with.

Bottom Line

The Alienware Alpha is a game console with the heart of a PC. The $549 hybrid device offers the power of a desktop with the accessibility of a regular console — although it takes a while to switch modes. Initially, the Alpha is more expensive than both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ($399 and $350 respectively). However, the Alpha has a massive library of games that are less expensive than what you'll find on traditional consoles.

In addition, the Alpha can play games in 4K — though not at the highest settings — and use a variety of peripherals. Keep in mind, however, that the Alpha is primarily a gaming machine. If you're looking for entertainment or streaming apps, you'll have to install them yourself. Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 feature a number of apps that cover television, movies, music and sports.

Overall, the Alpha is a strong choice for console gamers looking to dip their toes in the PC gaming pool or for established players who don't want to drag a large tower into their living rooms.
