Over the last couple of months there has been a lot of talk about Apple's plans for a smartwatch. However, Apple is not the only company building a wristwatch. Rumors about Samsung's own smartwatch have been doing the rounds for a while, too. Today, the company confirmed that it has a watch in the works and that it has been working on the device for a while.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, said that a smartwatch is one of the company's upcoming products.
"We've been preparing the watch product for so long," Young Hee is quoted as saying during an interview. "We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them."
Unfortunately, Young Lee was unable to say when the device would be ready for sale, what kind of functionality it would have, or what kind of OS it would run. Recent rumors pointed to a watch called the Galaxy Altius. Running on something called the AltiusOS, the watch is thought to have 3G connectivity, however, it's likely that it will also pull information from the user's phone.
Apple is thought to be releasing its own smartwatch later this year. Let's hope Samsung can get its competing product out the door around the same time.
