Wednesday id Software's John Carmack jumped on Twitter and said that RAGE: Mutant Bash TV has been approved by Apple and should hit iTunes on Thursday. The Standard version will cost a measly $0.99 while the HD version for Apple's iPad and iPhone 4 will cost $1.99.
For those looking for another full-blown FPS, the new id Tech 5 game for iOS won’t be it. Like Doom Resurrection, RAGE: Mutant TV Bash will be locked on rails, taking players for a ride rather than provide a true, free-roaming FPS experience like competing apps such as NOVA and Modern Combat 2.
Still, despite the rails, previous reports claim that the game is very fast-paced with players focusing on aiming, firing, dodging, firing even more and managing the weapons without having to worry about pesky movement controls.
"A large goal of the project has been to make sure that the levels can be replayed many times," Carmack said in his blog last month. "The key is making the gamplay itself the rewarding aspect, rather than story progression, character development, or any kind of surprises. Many of the elements that made Doom Resurrection good the first time you played it hurt the replayability, for instance. RAGE iOS is all action, all the time. I have played the game dozens of times, and testing it is still fun instead of a chore."
We're crossing our fingers RAGE for iOS will be better than Doom Resurrection, and keep us somewhat entertained while waiting for the full-blown game to arrive on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in September 2011.
