Late Sunday evening, rumors began to circulate on Twitter that Osama Bin Laden had been killed. The reports spread like wild-fire and the news was soon picked up by major networks. At 11:35pm EDT, President Barack Obama confirmed that Osama had been killed and Twitter-users went wild. How wild? Record breaking wild.

Twitter’s PR team this week revealed that the night of Sunday, May 1, saw the highest ever sustained rate of tweets, surpassing the time frame surrounding the Super Bowl and the Japanese earthquake. At one point, users were sending 5,106 messages per second:
