Ole Gunnar Solskjær has, so far, survived last weekend’s 0-5 humiliation at the hands of Liverpool and remains in charge for the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It wasn’t just the scoreline, but also the abject performance against their team’s most bitter rivals that caused such outrage amongst Manchester United fans. The coach and his players know they have to start putting things right in north London.

Solskjær also faced something of a selection dilemma here. Nobody doubts the amazing goal-scoring ability of Cristiano Ronaldo; he demonstrated that once again in the recent Champions League victory over Atalanta. However, there is an argument he unbalances the side and reduces the opportunities for the likes of Jadon Sancho. But he starts again today, while Sancho is on the bench.

For Nuno Espírito Santo, a midweek victory against Burnley in the League Cup only goes so far towards making up for a frustrating defeat against West Ham in the Premier League. For Spurs, it seems every time they make some progress, as they did with good wins over Aston Villa and Newcastle recently, they take a step back. All the while, Harry Kane is far from his prolific best and the team lacks creativity from midfield.

While the starting 11 now pretty much picks itself, there doesn’t seem much strength in depth in the Spurs squad, as proven by a hapless performance by the second string against Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League last week. This leaves a big burden not just on Kane but also the likes of Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura to perform every week.

The visitors came from behind in the Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United game last season, winning 1-3. Spurs, then managed by Jose Mourinho, won 1-6 at Old Trafford.

This time around, Manchester United will, of course, be without Paul Pogba following his red card against Liverpool. However, Raphaël Varane is back in to help shore up the defence. For Tottenham Hotspur, Bryan Gil picked up an injury in the League Cup tie and is a doubt. Ryan Sessgnon is also unavailable following an injury picked up with the England U21s.

Here's how they line up:

Tottenham: Lloris, Emerson Royal, Romero, Dier, Davies, Hojbjerg, Skipp, Moura, Lo Celso, Son, Kane.

Man Utd: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Varane, Maguire, Shaw, McTominay, Fred, Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo, Cavani.
