“The Boys” season 5 has officially landed on Prime Video, and the first two episodes are already setting the stage for what’s shaping up to be the most explosive season yet. ‘The Boys’ season 5 kicks off with a bang

With this being the final season of “The Boys,” it was always going to be an explosive one. But just for a quick refresher, season 4 saw Homelander (Antony Starr) continue his rise to power. At the same time, Sister Sage (Susan Heyward) became his right hand in consolidating control over the country. Hughie (Jack Quaid) spent much of the season unaware that a shapeshifter had impersonated Annie (Erin Moriarty), Butcher (Karl Urban) grappled with supercharged cancer and struggled to reach his son Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), and A‑Train (Jessie T. Usher) switched sides to support The Boys.

In the finale, Butcher killed Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) after she offered to help, the President was arrested, and the Speaker of the House, Calhoun (David Andrews), assumed office, immediately declaring martial law and deputizing supes under Homelander’s command. The Boys were captured as the United States fell under Homelander’s iron‑fisted control.

Season 5 episode 1, titled “Fifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite,” sees the media and public turn against the Boys. Annie’s resistance succeeds in hijacking one of Homelander’s public events to reveal the disastrous Flight 37 rescue. Vought immediately dismisses the footage as AI-generated, spinning the horror as fake. Infuriated and humiliated, Homelander pressures Sister Sage into treating derogatory memes about him as a punishable offense.

The Freedom Camp scenes are also seriously bleak, showing prisoners struggling to stay hopeful. However, Butcher crafts a rescue plan that involves getting Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) back and a tunnel-digging Supe to breach the camp. Tragically, former Seven member A‑Train, now one of the group’s allies, meets his end while saving Hughie from Homelander. He dies mocking Homelander and making him feel utterly useless, which was satisfying to say the least.

The tension ramps up

Now onto episode 2, titled “Teenage Kix,” which opens with A‑Train’s hilariously fake funeral. But of course, it still hits us hard (I’m not over it). The group, fully reunited on the outskirts of Pennsylvania, meets with Sameer (Omid Abtahi) to talk about the supe-killing virus he’s cooked up and whether it could be used against Homelander. Not long after, there are two steamy reunions: first Annie and Hughie, then Kimiko and Frenchie (Tomer Capone). Naturally, it wouldn’t be “The Boys” without a little frisky business.

Homelander unthaws Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), hoping for a bit of fatherly recognition because he’s humiliated and craving approval. The reunion doesn’t last long, though, because he sends Soldier Boy straight into the path of Butcher’s Supe-killing virus. It fails, as expected, but it also leaves a nagging doubt about whether Homelander himself might eventually be vulnerable.

Other notable moments from the first two episodes include Ashley (Colby Minifie) gaining mind-reading abilities thanks to Compound‑V, which she took to stay in Vought’s inner circle. Kimiko is now speaking, which is a little jarring at first, but it’s great that she can finally communicate with everyone. The Deep (Chace Crawford) remains as cringe-worthy as ever, yet still provides comic relief. Meanwhile, Firecracker (Valorie Curry) grows increasingly desperate to earn Homelander’s trust.

The first two episodes of season 5 of “The Boys” really don’t disappoint, packing in the show’s usual mix of gore, twists, and dark humor. It seems that in this final chapter, the series will challenge both its characters and viewers to confront the cost of power and of surviving in a world on the brink of chaos. It’s pretty insane stuff, and I'm nervous for the end.

“The Boys” season 5 storms onto Prime Video next week on April 8. If it’s anything like what came before, we’re bracing for more brutal twists and bigger battles as Homelander tightens his grip and the Boys fight back through chaos. With the stakes higher and the world on the brink, now’s the perfect time for a quick refresher.

Since its explosive debut in 2019, the satirical superhero series has carved out a massive following with its dark humor and ruthless action, and its final season promises to be the most intense yet. With eight episodes leading up to what showrunner Eric Kripke calls its “ultimate conclusion,” fans are more than ready to dive back into the carnage.

Fair warning: I’ll be spoiling major events from season 4. So, without further ado, here are five things you should remember before “The Boys” season 5.

1. Billy Butcher has gone rogue, but he’s dying

Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) is facing a grim diagnosis: a terminal brain tumor caused by years of V24 abuse, giving him an estimated life expectancy of just six months. The disease hasn’t just affected his body but also fractured his mind. In season 4, he experienced vivid hallucinations of his late wife, Becca (Shantel VanSanten), embodying his conscience, and Joe Kessler (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), representing his darkest impulses.

Episode 6 confirmed that the Kessler figure seen in season 4 wasn’t alive but rather a manifestation of Butcher’s monstrous side, which metastasized alongside his cancer. Things have only grown more dangerous after Butcher injected a half-dose of Compound V. The tumor mutated into what could be called a “super cancer”: sentient, black tentacles beneath his skin, capable of extreme violence and even possessing him during blackouts.

Following the accidental death of Grace Mallory (Laila Robins) at the hands of Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), Butcher has fully embraced Kessler’s radical agenda of global Supe genocide. Now a rogue actor with the only remaining sample of the Supe-killing virus, he is more lethal and unpredictable than ever.

2. Government takeover masterminded by Sister Sage

Recruited as the “smartest person in the world,” Sister Sage (Susan Heyward) has executed a ruthless strategy to seize control of the U.S. government. She orchestrated a sophisticated coup, installing a puppet regime while manipulating public perception through Firecracker (Valorie Curry), who spread alt-right rhetoric and personal scandals to undermine the “Starlighter” movement.

Using false flag operations that framed Starlighters for murder, Sage ensured the arrest of President-elect Robert Singer (Jim Beaver) and paved the way for Steven Calhoun’s (David Andrews) succession. Once in power, President Calhoun declared martial law and pledged complete allegiance to Homelander (Antony Starr), effectively transforming the country into a Supe-driven military dictatorship.

But Sage’s plan doesn’t stop there. She has hinted that the initial takeover was only “Phase One,” teasing that Phase Two is already in motion.

3. Most of The Boys were captured by a new Supe task force

Most members of The Boys have been captured by a new Supe task force, leaving the team fractured and on the run. Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), Mother's Milk (Laz Alonso), and Frenchie (Tomer Capone) are imprisoned in “Freedom Camp 47,” a compound branded with the Nazi-style slogan, “Freedom Sets You Free.”

Kimiko Miyashiro (Karen Fukuhara) is physically restrained by Sam Riordan (Asa Germann) and may be held at Elmira Prison or also at Camp 47.

Annie January/Starlight (Erin Moriarty) is the only member to evade capture. She has successfully unlocked her ability to fly and now leads an underground resistance, rallying those still willing to fight against the Supe-controlled regime.

4. Soldier Boy is alive

The season 4 finale of “The Boys” ended with one of its biggest teasers yet: Homelander and newly sworn‑in President Steven Calhoun are shown a secret CIA bunker containing a cryogenic chamber holding Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), who was put into cryosleep at the end of season 3 and is very much still alive.

Soldier Boy’s return sets up a major narrative thread for season 5. As Homelander’s biological father and one of the few Supes whose power rivals his own, his awakening could have huge implications: Homelander might see him as an ally to solidify his regime, as emotional closure for long‑standing wounds, or even as a threat to be eliminated. How their relationship will unfold is one of the most anticipated elements heading into the show’s final chapters.

5. Homelander becomes a ‘wrathful god’

Homelander has fully abandoned corporate PR to embrace his role as a “wrathful god.” The Seven have been reshaped under his command. For example, The Deep (Chace Crawford) has become a brutal enforcer, responsible for the deaths of several Vought employees, while Black Noir II (Nathan Mitchell), a narcoleptic actor with flight and super-strength, has assumed the mantle of his predecessor.

Firecracker now acts as a media vanguard, though her health is deteriorating due to hormones used to cater to Homelander’s twisted maternal fixations. Meanwhile, A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) defected after leaking information to The Boys, and his current whereabouts remain unknown.

Homelander essentially wants to take over the world in season 5. He ordered the execution of Vought staff who held compromising information on The Seven, including news anchor Cameron Coleman (Matthew Edison). Fearing for her life, Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie) injected herself with Compound V, leaving her with a rippling, monstrous scalp.

"The Boys" season 5 premieres with two episodes on Prime Video on April 8, 2026. After that, new episodes arrive weekly on Wednesdays through to the series finale on May 20.

"The Boys" season 5 is almost here. The fifth season debuts on Prime Video with a two-episode premiere on April 8, and with just over a month to spare, the streaming service just dropped the season's final trailer. Given the superhero series is calling it quits after this season, that means it's the last trailer we'll ever get for "The Boys."

So if the show is going out, it might as well go out with a bang. At least, that's the tone set in this final trailer. While things start with a Homelander (Antony Starr) monologue, the trailer ultimately devolves into superpowered battles and a few comedic bits reminding you not to take this show too seriously, because it certainly doesn't.

That makes it a bit lighter in tone than the official season 5 trailer we got back in December of last year, which sets the expectation that at least one major character won't make it out of this season alive.

Don't get me wrong, someone is clearly going to die. We see at least one person explode during the 150-second-long trailer. But this trailer seems to be focused on setting other stakes; namely, that Homelander has a plan to become immortal.

Why be a Supe when you can be a god?

About 30 seconds into this final trailer, we officially get our MacGuffin for the show's final season. According to Mother's Milk (Laz Alonso), Homelander is searching for V1, which Dr. Sameer Shah quickly explains is Vought's first edition of the superpower-inducing Compound V. But that's not the big reveal. As Dr. Shah continues, he drops a bombshell: V1 could make Homelander immortal.

Now, it's not clear if this is literal immortality or if V1 would make Homelander unstoppable, but I'm going with the former, given the choice of words used by Dr. Shah. Regardless, it's clear that Homelander cannot get this V1, at any cost.

"The Boys" season 5 is easily one of the most anticipated shows of next year. The fifth season will also be the Prime Video superhero drama's final one, and everyone is ready to grab their popcorn and watch the show's violent conclusion. Well, strap in, because we now have our first teaser trailer — and an official release date.

During the show's panel at CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, fans of "The Boys" finally got the trailer we've all been waiting for. We also found out that the show's final season will kick off with a two-episode premiere on April 8. New episodes will drop weekly until the series finale on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

Spoiler alert: It's a dark trailer. The tone is somber, yet our heroes (and villains) seem hardened by their resolve to end things once and for all. For at least one of the familiar faces, they'll meet their final fate, and I think the trailer indicates at least one hero we can expect to die.

Now, it's unclear if this trailer is the same as the season 5 trailer shown at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year. I wasn't in attendance and couldn't find a leaked version, but based on the first-hand accounts I've read, this seems to be a slightly different trailer. Still, the message appears to be the same: This is now Homelander's (Antony Starr) world, and you can either live with it — or you can die trying to save it.

Biggest takeaways from 'The Boys' season 5 trailer

After watching the trailer a dozen or so times, I've come away with three things that are really sticking with me and that I'll be keeping an eye on as season 5 approaches its end.

First, I think Starlight (Erin Moriarty) is going to die. We know she's the public face of the resistance against Homelander, and at the beginning of the trailer, it's hammered home that somebody (or somebodies) is dying this season. Then, we hear Butcher (Karl Urban) say the fateful words, "You wouldn't be the first to throw their life away in a war. But you would be the first to save the world doing it."

Right as he delivers that last part of the line, we see Starlight attacking a Vernon Correction Services re-education camp for Homelander's enemies. Is that, perhaps, too on the nose? Maybe. After all, we also get a good look at Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) during this speech, so perhaps she's the one who sacrifices herself. But I think it makes a lot of sense for Starlight to make a big, public, galvanizing display that costs her life. Plus, Hughie (Jack Quaid), does comment on fighting for her if she can't, throwing more fuel onto my speculative fire.

I also don't think Butcher's anti-supe virus is what brings down Homelander, who I do think gets brought down. The virus has always felt a bit like a MacGuffin, and interestingly, we don't see mention of it in this trailer. We see a lot in this trailer, including A-Train working with the good guys, our first look at "Supernatural" alumni Jared Padalecki on-screen with Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy (sorry, no Misha Collins and Padalecki appearance on-screen together yet) and a whole lot more. But no virus.

We also don't get a single frame of anyone from "Gen V," and I think that's telling. We know that the cast of Prime Video's "The Boys" spinoff will be in season 5 and that "Gen V" superhero Marie Moreau is possibly even more powerful than Homelander. So perhaps it's she who ultimately defeats the bombastic blonde fascist.

Personally, that's what I'm betting on, or that she's at least a big part of the final battle. And we maybe even get a peek at that ending in this trailer.

At the 1:26 mark of the trailer, we see Homelander looking up to the sky on his knees at letting out a blast of heat vision (or is it laser eyes?) into the night. There's a person directly in front of him, seemingly holding an arm out, and backing away, but not running away in panic. Is it Butcher holding a gun? Or is it Marie blood-bending Homelander into submission? Quite possibly, it's neither; there's no way to tell. But I think that moment is going to be one of the biggest in "The Boys" season 5, no matter who it is that's opposite of Homelander.

Less than a week after "Gen V" season 2 premiered on Prime Video, the streaming service is giving would-be streamers the chance to get caught up on the first season of the "The Boys" spinoff — and you can check the show out for free very soon.

If you keep a close eye on the Prime Video YouTube channel, you might have spotted that a new playlist has appeared, confirming all eight episodes will be made available for free. The first three episodes of "Gen V" are set to premiere on YouTube in less than 24 hours, and the remaining five will be released over the next couple of days.

This is a tactic Prime Video has already deployed to help promote some of its other original shows; the streamer previously shared seasons of both "The Summer I Turned Pretty" and "Upload" for free for a limited time only earlier in 2025. And seeing as neither of those shows has remained on YouTube, if you're planning to watch "Gen V" season 1 this way, you'll probably want to bump it to the top of your watchlist soon.

What is 'Gen V' about?

Fans of "The Boys," hear my cry: You need to watch "Gen V" season 2. Now, the good news is that season 2, or at least its three-episode premiere, is good. You'll have a good time, even if it's ultimately not quite for you. But trust me, having now watched every episode of "Gen V" to date, I promise you that you cannot skip season 2 if you want to know what's going on in "The Boys" season 5.

I'll be honest, I skipped "Gen V" season 1 when it came out. Well, more accurately, I watched the first episode on a plane, said "This is fine," then put away my iPad and did something else. Then season 4 of "The Boys" came around, and suddenly, in the finale, there were a bunch of characters from "Gen V" I had no clue about.

I finally got around to watching "Gen V" season 1 as part of my prep for reviewing the season 2 premiere, and I stand by the assessment I had on the plane. This show about super-powered teens running rampant at a fictional college is fine, even consistently good, but it's not for me. It doesn't scratch the same itch as "The Boys." The mothership show excels in part because it unintentionally mimics our increasingly dystopian life in the real world. This spinoff is less subtle; it actively seeks to make cultural references and directly highlight exactly how fascist forces operate in our timeline.

Frankly, I'm also not entirely sure I'm the show's target demographic. I'm 33 and my college years are long behind me. I like Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan, but they're hardly my contemporaries. While I understand the reference to 5G cell towers potentially causing cancer as a popular conspiracy theory, the hyper-online lifestyle of these students, where every moment is broadcast to social media, isn't really my lifestyle. I understand what the show is doing, but I don't connect with it.

That all said, the show is good, even if I'm not necessarily its audience. That's a relief, given that I'm now positive you'll need to watch the three-episode premiere and the subsequent five episodes to fully understand the events still to come in "The Boys" season 5.

'Gen V' season 2 seems designed to set up the endgame for 'The Boys'

Having finally seen all of "Gen V" season 1, it's clear this has always been the case. While you didn't have to watch the inaugural season of this show to get what was going on in "The Boys," the whole superhero-targeting virus plotline is laid out in detail in "Gen V," while it's only a shock reveal at the end in "The Boys."

In "Gen V" season 2, it looks like Project Odessa will be the major plot device, and it seems to be setting itself up to be a vital part of "The Boys" season 5. We've already seen Starlight show up to recruit Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) in the trailer for "Gen V" season 2 (and in the first episode) to discover what this secretive Vought project is about.

If you watch the three-episode premiere of "Gen V" season 2, you'll learn what Project Odessa is and how it could play a major role in "The Boys" season 5. If you watch the rest of the season, you'll probably learn vital information you'll need to know for the final season of "The Boys." Showrunner Eric Kripke has even hinted as much. “There’s a lot in Gen V that really helps set up the climax of this final confrontation in The Boys,” he revealed to Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview.

He also revealed that Marie might be "the most powerful superhero on the planet," which the three-episode premiere of "Gen V" season 2 certainly seems to be setting up as a possibility. So avoid watching this show at your own risk; if you're a fan of "The Boys," "Gen V" is officially required viewing.

"The Boys" season 5 stole the show at San Diego Comic-Con this year. It wasn't even really supposed to be there at all, but at a "Gen V" Hall H panel, fans in attendance got a special sneak preview of "The Boys" final season.

By all accounts, it stole the show. We haven't been able to find leaked footage of the preview — a shock in its own right — but outlets such as Deadline and users on X (Twitter) were quick to react to the teaser. Here's a breakdown of what happened.

'The Boys' Comic-Con 2025 teaser breakdown

Per those in attendance, there are a few big reveals that Eric Kripke and company showed off in the season 5 teaser.

First, Homelander (Antony Starr) is in full fascist mode. He is now the leader of the U.S. in all but name, and during the sneak preview, he addresses a crowded room, saying to those watching that, "This is a safer, more God-fearing nation."

Then, the teaser focused largely on some familiar faces. The Boys team is seen reuniting to prepare for a final showdown against Homelander. In between all the blood and gore, fans also reported getting a look at Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie) reacting to something off-screen that seemingly unsettled her. It's unclear what exactly she saw.

Finally, the teaser hinted at some new faces joining the show. We already knew that "Supernatural" alumni Misha Collins and Jared Padalecki appear on-screen together with the latter reprising their role as Soldier Boy, and fans in attendance at the "Gen V" panel got to see a shot of them on screen together during the sneak preview for "The Boys." But we learned that Seth Rogen will appear in an undisclosed role in the show's final season.

'Gen V' season 2 teases a 'The Boys' season 5 crossover with its own Comic-Con trailer

Of course, this season 5 teaser was shown at a "Gen V" panel, so we did get some updates on the second season of that spin-off as well — including a new SDCC trailer for "Gen V" season 2.

These shows are now firmly tied to each other, and the trailer only hammered this point home. In the trailer, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) is convincing Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) to return to Godolkin University to stop a sinister program called “Project Odessa,” which has ties to the university’s founder, Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater).

But she's not the only "The Boys" star to make an appearance in the trailer. Nathan Mitchell also appears as Black Noir II.

To see fully how the shows tie in together, you'll have to check out "Gen V" season 2 on Prime Video on Sept. 17 and then tune into "The Boys" season 5 when it arrives some time next year.

"The Boys" season 5 could be arriving on Prime Video sooner than we think.

On Saturday (June 21), actress Isabella Crovetti posted a pair of photos to their Instagram story from what appeared to be the "The Boys" season 5 wrap party (h/t Bleeding Cool).

The photos have since disappeared, but the fan account The Boys Universe screencaptured the photos and shared them on their own Instagram account.

Isabella might not be a familiar name to fans of Prime Video's superhero show, but her brother Cameron Crovetti plays Ryan Butcher on the show and is set to have a big role in the show's final season. As the illegitimate, superpowered son of Homelander (Antony Starr) and Billy Butcher's wife Becca (Shantel VanSanten), he could even be the deciding factor in the war between Homelander and Butcher (Karl Urban).

Cameron wasn't the only one spotted at the wrap party, though. Posts from The Boys Universe showed some other show stars in attendance, including Jessie T. Usher (A-Train), Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko), Starr, Nathan Mitchell (Balck Noir II) and Erin Moriarty (Starlight).

We still predict "The Boys" season 5 won't arrive until 2026

Barring these photos turning out to be the greatest photoshopped/generative AI-created images ever, it sure looks like "The Boys" has finished principal photography on season 5. Reshoots may eventually be needed, but the final season seems to be ready for the edit bay.

But when will we see the last batch of episodes be released on Prime Video?

I still think that season 5 won't premiere on Prime Video until 2026. Back in May 2024, both show creator Eric Kripke and show star Karl Urban indicated that season 5 was about two years away.

Things may be currently ahead of schedule, given that a May 2026 release window would give "The Boys" a pretty long post-production window of around 11 months, but I don't think they're so far ahead that episodes will be ready in 2025.

Plus, the Prime Video release calendar is starting to fill out. "Gen V," the spin-off show of "The Boys," drops its second season in September, and it seems that "Gen V" season 2 will be set between seasons 4 and 5 of "The Boys."

That means "The Boys" can't arrive until after the October 22 "Gen V" season 2 finale.

Then, "Fallout" season 2 premieres in December, likely extending into January 2026.

To allow Prime Video's IP shows room to breathe, that signals to me "The Boys" season 5 won't come any earlier than February 2026.

That'd still be a few months ahead of our current projection of May 2026, but with filming now wrapped, I won't be shocked if we see "The Boys" season 5 premiere in early Spring 2026.

"The Boys" season 5 is still filming and is tentatively projected for a 2026 release window.

But in the meantime, "The Boys" season 4 is campaigning for Emmy nominations, and it's doing it in a way that is as delightfully demented as the twisted superhero show itself.

Titled "Acting for Awards Season," this for your consideration (FYC) video is a parody of "Masterclass" that stars "award-winning" director Adam Bourke (P.J. Byrne), who directed the Vought Studios films "Dawn of the Seven" and “Training A-Train.”

In the video, the (entirely fictional) director lays out his guide to dominating awards season and makes fun of several very real shows along the way. None of these shows are explicitly named, but you can pretty easily spot most of them.

Every show referenced in 'The Boys' FYC video

First up? "Mare of Easttown," and its "Philadelphia accents," which get attacked at the 0:36 mark.

Then it's on to skewering "Bridgerton" and its prolific amount of promiscuous people, while possibly also going after "Shogun" and its use of seppuku.

Of course, "Game of Thrones" wasn't going to escape Bourke's razor wit. "Dragons. Cheesy as hell," the director declared, clearly taking aim at "House of the Dragon." "But banging your sister on a dragon? Jackpot!"

From there, we go into a brief musing on whether or not the stars of "The Bear" are qualified to speak on political issues like immigration before giving praise to "The Last of Us" season 1 for being "one-eighth gay."

This is, of course, a reference to the season 1 episode "Long Long Time," which is possibly the best episode of any show ever. If you've never seen it, or you don't believe me, go watch it on Max right now, then come back and tell me I'm wrong. You won't be able to because, like Bourke in this video, you'll be too busy choking back sobs, having just watched an absolute masterpiece.

Finally, "The Boys" took aim at itself, declaring you should "never do a superhero TV show." Granted, it then couldn't resist a parting shot at "Friday Night Lights," but it was still nice to see a moment of self-deprecating humor amongst the deluge of potshots at other acclaimed shows.

"The Boys" season 5 cast and crew took a break from production this weekend to tease what to expect in the show's final season. And based on their comments, it sure sounds like things are going to be grim.

"There will probably be lots of deaths,” show creator Eric Kripke told those in attendance at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience. "There’s no guarantee of who’s gonna survive."

Nathan Mitchell, who plays the supe Black Noir II on the show, also warned fans to expect the unexpected. “There are some things that are coming in season 5 that you’re not going to have in your bingo card,” he told Deadline.

That said, not everything will hit like a ton of bricks or a superpowered blast of laser eyes. Some things have been in the works from season 4, destined to pay off in the next installment.

“I look at the last two seasons … like an accordion,” said Antony Starr, whose portrayal of Homelander is now iconic after four seasons.

“One piece of the accordion is going out and then this is the compression going back in. There was a lot of setup in season 4 for season 5. Everything is gunning towards that climactic end.”

Unfortunately, some things you'll see on the screen might also hit a bit close to home, something the show has had to struggle with as the absurdity of real life starts to mirror this satirical show about superheroes gone bad.

"[Eric] Kripke and the writers will write the season," said show star Colby Minifie, "and then two years later, the season will come out and things happen in the world that are like [what was written]."

"I actually hate that sometimes," chimed in fellow star Jack Quaid, whose character, Hughie, started the series as the lone "normal" person and audience avatar but is now completely involved in the fight against supes beyond his initial quest for vengeance.

"It was meant to be dystopian," added Starlight actress Erin Moriarty. "It's become like weirdly reflective."

So, who will suffer a shocking fate? What moments will have our jaw on the floor (or one of the show's characters' jaws literally on the floor)? You'll have to watch season 5 when it comes out to know for sure.

"The Boys" season 5 is still probably about a year away. But we now know at least one scene to expect from the show's final season.

Fans of the show "Supernatural" know that season 5 of "The Boys" has a greater purpose than just ending the saga of Butcher vs. Homelander. It is also a long-awaited on-screen reunion for the former show's three big stars: Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins.

In an interview with TV Insider, "The Boys" show creator Eric Kripke revealed that yes, not only will all three be in the show this season — which had already been confirmed in an Instagram post (see above) — but that the three are guaranteed to share the screen together. At least once.

“It’s a blast. We already shot it," revealed Kripke. “I will confirm that Jared, Jensen, and Misha are all in the same frame together, and in the same storyline, and interacting with each other.”

For "Supernatural" fans, that has to be a huge relief. Of course, it was almost a certainty that Kripke, who created the long-running CW show starring Ackles, Padalecki and Collins, would ensure the reunion was done right.

“Having the five of us back together on set, filming, was just so fun and like a high school reunion," added former "Supernatural" director Phil Sgriccia, who will be directing the season 5 premiere: "Fifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite." "You immediately fall into all your old patterns.”

Kripke also shared Sgriccia's warm feelings about the backdoor "Supernatural" reunion. “It was really heartwarming and nice to like immediately be brought back to these guys that I love and haven’t had them all together, at least in a professional capacity, in years and years," he chimed in. "So it was really, really meaningful.”

As for what will happen when the trio is on screen together? We know Ackles is reprising his role as Soldier Boy from previous seasons, but Padalecki and Collins's roles are still under wraps.

Amazon's gory and hard-hitting anti-superhero show returns with The Boys on the back foot. Their leader, Butcher (Karl Urban), only has a few months left to live after contracting a terminal illness from taking V24, a serum that grants temporary superpowers. 

It couldn't come at a worse time too, as his archnemesis Homelander (Antony Starr) is at the peak of his power and influence. The public only loves him more after the bloody events of Season 3's finale, and his fellow supes on the Seven alternate between blindly following his orders and cowering in fear. Meanwhile, the cutthroat Vought mole Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) closes in on the White House. But maybe all is not lost for the Boys. Butcher has a plan to wipe out supes once and for all: unleashing the anti-supe virus he uncovered in the spinoff show “Gen V.”

'Fallout'

As a huge "Fallout" fan, I had high hopes for Prime Video's take on the post-apocalyptic series set in a 1950s-inspired future. And I'm pleased to say I was not disappointed. “Fallout's" eight-episode first season is packed with references for eagle-eyed fans, stellar production design, classic songs featured in the games, and the blend of emotional gut punches and irreverent humor the series is known for. 

The story is split between its three main characters: Lucy (Ella Purnell), a bright-eyed, sheltered vault dweller who leaves behind the only home she's ever known, Maximus (Aaron Moten), a new recruit in the Brotherhood of Steel paramilitary group desperate to climb the ranks, and Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins), a Hollywood star who survived the initial nuclear blast and is now a mutated gunslinging outlaw. Their paths wind together as they unravel the true purpose behind the vaults billed as humanity's safety net.

'Outer Range'

Critics have compared Prime Video's sci-fi Western show "Outer Range" to a cross between "Yellowstone," "Stranger Things," and "Lost. " Its recent second season has proven to be a hit, earning a 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Josh Brolin stars as Royal Abbott, a rancher in Wyoming fighting for his land and family after discovering a mysterious black hole in his backyard. That's when things take a turn for the supernatural. 

A drifter named Autumn (Imogen Poots) starts camping out on his property and suggests a theory about what's going on. Royal and his wife Cecelia (Lili Taylor) struggle to keep their family together in the wake of a devastating disappearance. With threats coming in from multiple fronts, things only promise to get more interesting in Season 2 as the Abbott family is forced to wander deeper into the dark void that could shake the foundations of time itself.

Prime Video has just dropped the first three episodes of “The Boys” season 4, and there is already so much excitement. Known for its unapologetically gritty and satirical take on the superhero genre, “The Boys” continues to push boundaries and challenge norms. This new season wastes no time in delivering its signature blend of intense action, dark humor, and sharp social commentary.

Of course, fans of this series know it doesn’t hold back. The opening episodes set the stage for what promises to be another wild and unpredictable ride. Viewers are treated to a host of new challenges and conflicts, with the stakes higher than ever before. 

And it’s no surprise that critical reception has been positive, with many praising the show for its “engaging performances” and “ability to leave the viewer wanting more.”

So, is this new season of “The Boys” worth watching? We provide some spoiler-free reviews to help you determine whether it should be next on your list.

‘The Boys’ continues to be bloody, visceral, and hard-hitting

Prime Video, one of the best streaming services, continues to deliver exceptional shows that have completely stunned audiences. “Fallout” and “Outer Range” have been some examples, and now season 4 of “The Boys” has completely taken over. Currently, it has a high score of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes with almost 50 reviews from critics. 

Bob Strauss from TheWrap said: “Showrunner Eric Kripke’s creative team gives the expected stuff fresh, urgent spins, even if they can’t prevent some plot beats from seeming familiar. What’s key, though, is how we’re constantly surprised by new, deeper emotional dimensions.” Meanwhile, the London Evening Standard’s Maddy Mussen says “there are some amazing lines, and this may be the funniest season yet. It might feel a little repetitive at times, but ultimately it’s so entertaining, you just forget about it.”

Liz Shannon Miller from Consequence also believes “The Boys” is managing to maintain its uniqueness in the genre: “The Boys has evolved into a show remarkably well-positioned to comment not just on pop culture, but on society at large.”

While the reviews are very positive, there have been concerns about this season. Empire Magazine’s Amon Warmann said: “There is a question of how long The Boys can keep its main players on the board without things becoming tiresome or worse, unfeasible. But for now, with storytelling this balanced and considered, it’s a pleasure to watch it all play out.”

This will be a piece of cake

From what we can gather, “The Boys” season 4 continues to be one hell of a ride. It’s “as outrageous as ever”, meaning you’re still getting the full bloody experience when going into this world. Parts of the official synopsis highlight interesting plot points like “the world is on the brink” and “the stakes are higher than ever.” So, all we can say is be prepared, because it’s obvious this series doesn’t hold back. 

If you do need a quick recap of season 3, I can provide that, but be warned that it will contain spoilers: 

At the end of "The Boys" season 3, significant events unfold: Homelander (Anthony Starr) publicly introduces his son Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), who starts to embrace his father's violent tendencies after they kill a protester together. Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) learns he has only months to live due to his use of Temp V. 

The Boys regroup, with Annie (Erin Moriarty) officially joining the team. Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) is appointed as the Vice President running mate, increasing her political power and posing a new threat. These developments set the stage for intense conflicts in season 4.

Although the reviews are very good at the moment, they can change. Previous seasons of “The Boys” all earned an exceptional amount of praise, so let’s hope that continues into season 4. Plus, it was announced on X (Twitter) that season 5 will be the last, meaning there is plenty of time to wrap things up in the universe and truly go out with a bang.

Yes, “The Boys” will be back in town for another insanely chaotic rodeo in season 5, as announced by Vought — no, sorry, Prime Video. This gory series focuses on a group of superheroes who abuse their powers rather than use them for good. A group of vigilantes known as The Boys are determined to bring these supes down while exposing the evil, secretive organization that manages them. 

Based on the comic book series of the same name, “The Boys” became one of the most popular streaming series after its first season. Now, with season 4 of "The Boys" approaching in June, there is more to look forward to in the coming years.

Today introduced quite a few celebratory posts that highlighted the news of season 5, including a special video from Prime Video properly announcing the fifth season. Karen Fukuhara’s Kimiko is seen carving the confirmation into a table with a knife before smiling into the camera, an iconic move that earned more excitement in the comments. 

Although it is exciting, it doesn’t mean that the season renewal is necessarily a good thing. And this is coming from someone who has been a huge fan of “The Boys” since the very first episode. You might be thinking: “But we’ll get to see the characters again, right?” While that is definitely true and a valid reason to be excited, there are some looming concerns that I just can’t ignore. 

He’s the Homelander, and he can do whatever he wants

Homelander is one character that just won’t die, no matter how many opportunities there are to end him for good. Antony Starr does such an outstanding job at playing this evil superhero, and his performance makes me hate Homelander and shiver whenever his creepy smile appears on the screen. 

But there is one issue with another season being in the works for “The Boys”. Homelander could fly into season 5, since he's such a big character and can do "whatever he wants." While this antagonist has made the show incredibly tense and unsettling, it is concerning that his story will be dragged out even more. We’ve seen The Boys attempt to kill him multiple times, only to fail, give up, try again, and then fail. I’m not the only person who wants to see Homelander get what he deserves. 

Even though the revenge on him would be satisfying, season 5 might feel strange without such a dominant figure (if he does end up dying). If they were to kill off his character, it only makes sense to focus on his son Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) as he deals with some increasing inner rage that puts him in a very vulnerable position. There’s also the chance that more Gen V characters will appear in season 5 since they were in the season 4 trailer. This could make up for any big deaths, such as Butcher (Karl Urban) or Homelander. 

So, it’s a bit of a predicament really. Homelander dying in season 4 could lower the viewership for season 5, but keeping him alive might drag out his story.  

Season 5 should say goodbye to 'The Boys'

As much as it pains me to say this, “The Boys” should end with season 5. Far too many shows have succumbed to their wounds of being dragged out just for the sake of it. Take “The Walking Dead” for example, one of my favorite shows that got worse and worse with every season. I don’t want such a good series like “The Boys” to end up ruining the characters and following a repetitive narrative. 

Instead, season 5 should focus on giving each character a well-deserved ending, including the end of Homelander (if he doesn’t die in season 4, of course). Wrapping up one of the best series on Prime Video will still keep the world alive if more spinoffs, and even a potential movie, were to come about.

We still don’t know when The Boys season 4 is going to arrive on Prime Video, that doesn’t mean we’ll be completely devoid of supe content for the foreseeable future. The Boys’ first live action spin-off, Gen V, is coming this September — and Amazon just dropped the a new trailer that's even wilder than the 'first look' teaser we saw last year.

Gen V is the college spin-off for The Boys set at Godolkin University — a college designed to train young superheroes in how to use their powers properly. Needless to say, if you thought normal colleges were already a hotbed of wild shenanigans and debauchery, it goes without saying that Gen V will be turning that up to the extreme.

The show’s main star is Marie (Jaz Sinclair), a blood bender who is hell bent on becoming the first Black woman to join The 7 — the elite superhero team seen in The Boys. She’s not the only one, and that means superhero college is supremely competitive. Which is not a good thing when your classmates have the power to slice you open with laser vision.

Apparently the show will involve some kind of superpowered Battle Royale, and the trailer suggests that Godolkin University hides some very dark secrets. But the extent of those secrets isn’t very clear — and likely won’t be until we get to sit down and watch the show.

One scene hints that Marie may have accidentally repeated The Termite’s big mistake from season 3. Considering the main character’s power literally involves controlling blood, it’s pretty clear that Gen V will be just as gory as its predecessor. 

Don’t expect the language to be toned down either, given the amount of censored expletives that pop up during the trailer.

Gen V also stars Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Shelley Conn, Sean Patrick Phillips, Patrick Schwarzenegar, Jason Ritter and Clancy Brown. Various actors from The Boys will also reprise their roles as guest stars, including Jessie T Usher, Colby Minifie and Claudia Doumit.

Gen V will debut on Amazon Prime Video on September 29, with the release of the first 3 episodes. The following five (for a total of 8) will be released each week over October and November.

The Boys season 4 may be facing delays, so now's a good time to review its growing cast of characters. Our expectations for these characters is quite high, as the Prime Video series has proven quite great providing fans with multifaceted characters that (sometimes literally) blur the lines between good and bad. 

Over the course of three seasons, we've lost some characters we've either grown to loathe or like (love's a strong word for anyone in The Boys' universe), such as Crimson Countess (Laurie Holden) and Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell). And even though many survived last season (where are you, Soldier Boy?), there will be more room at the table next season. 

And that includes more space for Billy Butcher's boy as Cameron Crovetti's Ryan Butcher got promoted from recurring character to series regular! The list of new cast members includes a familiar star, two new superheroes and a few actors with undisclosed roles. Here's what we know so far.

Brand New Characters Joining The Boys season 4

Sister Sage 

Sister Sage (Susan Hayward) is a supe whose powers and abilities are yet to be announced. Her costume features an upside-down Eye of Providence, which could make you think there's something divine going on here. Based on her name and the below, it seems like she can think (or possibly move) faster than most.

Sage was originally announced on The Boys’ Instagram on August 1, 2022, with the words, "Meet Sage. She’s already a thousand steps ahead of you." Don't bother checking the comics to find out more about her. Like Firecracker (below), she was created purely for the series.

Firecracker

Firecracker is another supe whose powers are yet to be disclosed, but showrunner Eric Kripke's promised that both of these new characters "are some of the best & craziest ever written" for The Boys. 

Firecracker (seen above) is carrying a holstered pistol, making her one of the few supes to be seen using or carrying a weapon: “Let’s just say this Firecracker has a short fuse.”

Hughie Campbell’s absentee mother 

Even though fans were first made to believe that Hughie Campbell’s mother died many years ago, the season 2 finale revealed that she merely abandoned Campbell and his father when he was aged 6. Unfortunately, she left him with nothing but a strong determination to be nothing like her, so make way for what will surely be a tumultuous family reunion.

Deadline broke the news that Rosemarie Dewitt will play Hughie's mother.

3 more new cast members

Deadline also revealed American Gothic star Elliot Knight and Supernatural's Rob Benedict joined the cast in currently undisclosed roles, but the bigger news is that The Walking Dead favorite Jeffrey Dean Morgan is also joining the cast, as Karl Urban revealed in the above Instagram post.

Prime Video's The Boys season 4 can't come soon enough, but it will have to wait until after the Writers Guild of America strike is over. So, now we just have to hope that there are fans of the show on both sides of the picket lines.

Showrunner Eric Kripke, who adapted Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's grim and bloody comic book that shows the darker side of superheroes, broke the news on Twitter. Yesterday (June 28) Kripke wrote "#TheBoys update! 1) When #Season4 drops depends on how long the #WGA Strike goes. No answer yet. Tell the studios to make a fair deal!" That post also included a fun treat for fans, which we'll show below.

You might be confused, because The Boys season 4 finished shooting already. To that end, Kripke shared an explanation:  "There’s a good amount of dialogue we write in post that the actors come back to record (called ADR), to help bridge story gaps or clarify a plot point. We’ll also edit dialogue together in different ways to ‘rewrite’ it. Writing at every stage of the process."

He ended the tweet with the #WGAStrong hashtag, showing his support and solidarity with the writer's strike.

Outlook: The Boys' wildest season isn't the only one delayed

If you're not excited for The Boys season 4, you should be. Simon Pegg, who plays Hughie's dad told Collider that “You know how crazy The Boys is? It’s gonna get crazier,” Pegg said. “I had so much fun on that show. It was so great to go back and play Hugh Sr. I love Jack [Quaid]. It was great to work with Rosemarie DeWitt, who plays Hughie’s mom, who comes back. It’s going to be great. You’re gonna love it.”

As for what to expect? Homelander's trial for his season 3 murder of a protestor seems on the horizon, and there's a chance Soldier Boy could come back.

The Boys is just one of many shows delayed because of the writers' strike, showing how important scribes are to the creative process. Stranger Things season 5, for example, halted production as the Duffers stood with the striking writers.

Andor season 2, its final act, also lost its showrunner, as The Hollywood Reporter revealed Tony Gilroy stopped all of his duties after receiving criticism for doing writing duties.

But some shows are soldiering on, such as House of the Dragon season 2, according to a Variety report, and The Rings of Power season 2 is going on too, also per Variety.

The Boys season 4 could see the return of one of last season's new characters. While season 3 saw Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) taken down, the star insists his character's not out of the picture yet.

In an interview with AwardsRadar's The 'Verse podcast, Ackles was asked to confirm his role in the upcoming spin-off series, The Boys: Gen V. While the Supernatural alum remained tight-lipped about specifics, he did tease there could be some truth to the rumors.

"There's some things out there. I'm not allowed to give anything out, but we'll just say that Soldier Boy is not dead. Thank God." While he's not talking about The Boys season 4 specifically, that quote gives fans room to run with speculation, and reminds us that the classic Supe is not out of the picture.

For Gen V, it was actually Ackles who "gave" something out about his appearance in Gen V. During the Creation New Orleans fan convention in April, Ackles indicated he would be making an appearance along with other Boys stars, telling attendees, "Soldier Boy pops up for a brief moment in this new spin-off of The Boys. In fact, there's a few cameos from the mothership that come into this spin-off." 

Soldier Boy, who debuted in season 3 of The Boys, is a maniacal Captain America pastiche haunted by PTSD after years of experimentation. A member of World War II-era super team Payback, he was betrayed by his team to Russians, who experimented on him for over 20 years. He was then saved by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), who aims to turn him into a weapon against Homelander (Antony Starr). 

However, that effort backfired with the reveal that Soldier Boy was Homelander's father. The season finale saw Soldier Boy beaten after a spectacular brawl with Butcher and Homelander at The Seven's headquarters. The episode's closing moments show him in the custody of the CIA, asleep inside a gassed chamber but still alive.

Analysis: There's a particular spot for Soldier Boy to fit into The Boys season 4

It's unknown how - or even if - Soldier Boy will factor into Season 4, or anything beyond Gen V. The spin-of series, slated to debut on Prime Video later this year, is based on the volume 4 arc "We Gotta Go Now" from the original The Boys comic book series. That story follows a twisted parody of Marvel's X-Men comics, a group of young superheroes attending a Vought-funded school that aims to train crimefighters.

As for season 4? Currently, Prime Video's Vought YouTube channel is teasing The Boys season 4's potential Homelander trial, and Soldier Boy's involvement with Homelander could make him an interesting witness were he somehow called to testify.

The Boys season 4 recently wrapped filming, and has no announced airdate.

The Boys season 4 is still a ways away, but one significant subplot has come to light: Homelander's upcoming trial for murdering a Starlight supporter in last season's jaw-dropping finale. 

Vought International broadcast journalist Cameron Coleman (Matthew Edison) revealed the trial in a video denouncing the accusations against Homelander as fake news, while putting "murdering" in air quotes. In Vought's version of events, Homelander acted as a father defending his son from a violent "Starlighter thug." 

That's opposed to what all of us at home saw: Homelander slicing through a Starlight supporter with his laser eyes, killing them in cold blood. Just as he's done several times outside of the public eye over the last three seasons. 

For everyone who finished The Boys season 3 finale — our massive The Boys season 3 ending explained guide will help you unpack its events — it's not surprising that the fallout would feature front and center going into season 4. It's even less surprising that Vought would launch a PR campaign to start muddying the waters and defend its golden boy of a supe. 

Coleman expressed his outrage over the trial on Vought's "official" Twitter account. He argued it's the public's patriotic duty to stand behind Homelander, using the new hashtag #HomeFree.

"I'll tell you. In all my years as a journalist, I have never, and I mean never, had to report on anything so shamelessly fake. I mean, he was protecting his son from a malicious attacker. One of those Starlighter thugs. And you want to blame him for defending himself? Are we still living in America? Unbelievable," he said. "So now, it's our patriotic duty to help him stay #HomeFree. And you can believe that VNN will be following this story nonstop with hard-hitting, totally unbiased coverage of this ridiculous witch hunt. It's the least we can do for our greatest hero."

Analysis: Looks like The Boys season 4 is headed to court

All signs point to Homelander's trial as a key point for The Boys season 4. Homelander will stand trial, marking the start of his public downfall. Or at least that's what it will look like to those outside his fanbase, who cheered on the violence at the end of season 3.

Odds are Homelander will hit his breaking point, and we'll see him throw Vought's carefully constructed public persona to the wind in favor of using his powers as he pleases. After all, even if he's found guilty, it's a laughable slap on the wrist. What's the American justice system going to do to the most powerful being on Earth?

Given the immense popularity of Amazon's anti-superhero series The Boys, it was only a matter of time before the show produced a live-action spin-off set within its hilariously profane world.

Well, that time has finally come, and the show in question is Gen V, which takes place in the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting. The series will explore a younger group of characters who are all coming to terms with their powers during a tumultuous time in their lives — their college years.

Now, Amazon Studios has dropped its first trailer for the series, which looks just as delightfully messed up as the show it spawned from. We get grotesque violence, biting satire, surprise cameos and even some puppet murder thrown in for good measure.

You can check out Gen V's first look trailer below, but be warned — the excessive blood and gore on display means it's not for the squeamish.

What is Godolkin University?

In the comics, Godolkin University (or God U) is like a messed up version of Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters in X-Men — the big difference being that it's owned by Vought International, the very corporation responsible for the rise of 'supes' in America.

The university takes its name from its founder John Godolkin, the twisted individual who also happens to be the leader of the G-Men, a superhero team made up of kidnapped children who were forced to take the drug Compound V.

In the 'first look' trailer above, we get our first glimpse of Clancy Brown (Starship Troopers, The Shawshank Redemption) as Godolkin, and we get the feeling he'll be an even more deranged villain than Homelander is in The Boys.

We're also given some glimpses at the rest of the show's main cast, which includes not one, but two Chilling Adventures of Sabrina alums in Jaz Sinclair and Chance Perdomo, along with Patrick Schwarzenegger (The Terminal List), Sean Patrick Thomas (Save the Last Dance) and Lizze Broadway (Bones).

Fans of The Boys will also be pleased to see appearances from Jessie T. Usher (who plays A-Train), Colby Minifie (who plays Ashley) and P.J. Byrne (who plays Adam Bourke).

While the trailer for Gen V does not offer an exact release date, it does promise the show will arrive on Amazon Prime Video sometime in 2023.

• The Boys season 4: New cast members, everything we know and what we expect

Well, there you have it. The Boys season 3's ending has hit and we have a lot to unpack. In The Boys season 3 episode 8, "The Instant White-Hot Wild," we got the big battle between Homelander, Billy Butcher, Soldier Boy and The Boys that this entire season was building to.

We reached this episode with everything at a fever pitch, with the revelation that Homelander (Antony Starr) is the son of Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), Homelander hunting down his own son Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) with the help of Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit), and Butcher (Karl Urban) and Hughie (Jack Quaid) going for more Temp-V even though they're both in danger of fatally overdosing. 

The Boys season 3 finale also delivered more than a couple of endearing moments, and a betrayal or two (depending on your point of view). So let's unpack the kills, temporary alliances and everything else we just saw from one of the best shows on Prime Video.

Of course, consider this your Spoiler Warning for The Boys season 3. We're going, ahem, deep.

The Boys season 3 moves its chess pieces move around the board

We kick things off with Ryan telling his dear ol' homicidal dad that "Aunt" Grace (Laila Robins) has been taking care of him. Then, Homie had a heart-to-heart with his son, and showed him the humanity necessary to bring his son over to the dark side. It felt akin to what would have happened if Darth Vader were a master manipulator and Luke were more easily plied. 

Meanwhile, The Boys' version of our own very-divisive politics reared its head at a rally where the yellow (Starlight) and blue (Homelander) sides screamed in anger. Now that Annie (Erin Moriarty) outed Homelander as evil live in 4K on Instagram Live, her team's going to #FreeMaeve. Meanwhile, Soldier Boy's side yelled about children dying loud enough for audiences to know who is supposed to represent who. 

At the same time, Ashley (Colby Minifie) and The Deep (Chace Crawford) found Maeve (Dominique McElligott) and watched her get knockout-gassed … before she breaks free.

Our anti-heroes are trying to move on to stop Homelander, as Hughie wipes off some black goo from his ear from his Temp-V and Soldier Boy doesn't even try to act like he's going to help take his own son down. 

As for Frenchie (Tomer Kapon) and Mother's Milk (Laz Alonso)? Well, they've actually got a weapon to take down Soldier Boy, but the former has the great idea of keeping it in a perfume bottle. MM is torturing himself for knocking out Todd, but only because his daughter Janine saw it — and now she might define him by it. Frenchie says he can't hide his broken-ness from Janine, and that MM is too good a person for his daughter to give up on him.

As Homelander sees that Starlight's live stream knocked Vought's stock down, Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell) and his animated hallucinations return to the tower to declare his intent to kill Soldier Boy. Homelander, unconvincingly, embraces him. 

At a gas station, Butcher knocks out Hughie, but not before comparing him to his little brother who we met last week. He and Soldier Boy then hit the road to New York. A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) offers to help Franklin (Christian Keyes), his wheelchair-bound brother, and then reveals he doesn't care if he can get back into the Supe game without him. Then A-Train lies and claims that he didn't kill Blue Hawk, but his brother sees right through him, and kicks him out of the house before falling out of his chair.

Reconciliations and failed conversations

Hughie gets help from the one person who shouldn't want to, as Annie picks him up from the gas station before revealing how he's in danger because of Temp-V. Hughie talks about his father's emotional strength and resilience, basically working to an apology to Annie about his behavior this season. He even lets her get out an "I f**cking told you so!" The two meet up with Maeve, who is posted up with MM & Co.. 

Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) tries to slap the blow out of Frenchie's nose after he does a line, and he doesn't seem to remember any of the "buck up" speech he just gave MM. Of course, Kimiko reasons with him, and we at home tear up a little bit. 

The group ponders how Soldier Boy and Homelander will interact once they're in the same room, and Starlight fails to get a Vought Tower evacuation done remotely. Hughie pleads with the gang to save Butcher, as they need to "save everyone, even if they don't deserve it." 

The Boys is all about loyalty, loyalty and loyalty

Butcher and Soldier Boy talk about invading the tower, and bond over their own memories of their dads, while SB goes vulgar about his past partners (again) before explaining how miserable their childhoods were. Butcher tries to convince SB that Homelander isn't really worth caring about, but that speech goes over like a lead balloon. 

Another failed conversation happens at Vought, when Homelander tells Noir about his new revelation as he tries to find out anything good about Soldier Boy. Homie then gets Noir to confess that he knew about the secret fatherhood, which leads Homelander to literally rip his guts out and leave him in a growing pool of his own blood. 

Maeve and Co. head to Butcher's place, and demand answers. Hughie demands that they don't go the violent route (tough chance on this show), and then Frenchie actually sticks up for himself (and demands basic workers rights) after Butcher tells him to shut up. Hughie pleads for reason, Maeve throws out the anti-SB nerve agent and Soldier Boy himself comes in to threaten Annie. Butcher forces them all to get in the safe. 

A-Train, Deep and Ashley analyze Annie's warning, but Homelander says they need to stay in the tower to make a statement of confidence — right before he shows them Noir's helmet to remind them who's in charge, before telling everyone about Deep and the Octopus. 

Deep pledges loyalty, Homelander demands Ashley remove her wig and A-Train judges everyone. The Deep then proves his loyalty by assassinating Lamar Bishop (Graham Gauthier), one of the potential VP candidates, helping create a spot for Victoria Neuman to advance.

The Boys season 3's big climactic endgame

Starlight and the gang break out of the safe, Frenchie says they can get more nerve agent from within Vought Tower and everyone questions this plan. But since it's the best option on the table, Hughie starts a chorus of agreements. Hughie then finds a vial of Temp-V, making all of us afraid he's going to be dumb. 

And in Vought Tower, Homelander is greeted by Butcher, Soldier Boy and Maeve, and reveals he killed Noir over his hidden lineage. Homie then basically makes a request that his dad join the dark side, and appeals to the idea of family by bringing in Ryan — the ultimate human shield, who calls Soldier Boy "grandpa" and has forsaken Butcher. 

Soldier Boy doesn't buy this nonsense, calling his son "weak," "starved for attention" and "a f**king disappointment." Everyone clashes before Ryan laser-eye-blasts SB, who then knocks the child into a cabinet, knocking him out. 

And right as Soldier Boy is about to de-power Homelander with a blast, and likely take out Ryan in the process, Butcher saves them both with Temp-V enabled eye-beams. After Butcher explains his own love triangle, SB mocks him for wanting to save Ryan, and we get the big bad battle, as Soldier Boy and Butcher take apart the Vought News Network set while Maeve fights Homelander. 

Enter MM and Starlight to save Butcher, as Frenchie and Kimiko go to make more nerve agent in the lab. Hughie forces an emergency evacuation, which leads Ashley to take the emergency pod — leaving out her assistant (also named Ashley). 

Kimiko then defends Frenchie in the lab by kicking butt to the beat of Michael Sembello's Flashdance theme "She's a Maniac." Homelander gouges one of Maeve's eyes out with his thumb, more violence ensues and an incapacitated Frenchie hands Kimiko the gas to stop Soldier Boy. 

Back in the Vought News set, Soldier Boy beats the hell out of Butcher and stops Kimiko from gassing him, leaving Hughie with a decision to make. Take Temp-V to help, or be smarter. He goes for the latter and turns the light up in the newsroom to give Starlight all the power to knock Soldier Boy down for a moment. This gives the gang enough time to gas Soldier Boy, with MM doing the honors for his family. 

Soldier Boy tries to go nuclear to avoid being frozen again, Maude stabs Homelander in the ear and then sacrifices herself by throwing herself and Solider Boy out the window, thus taking her own powers away in the resulting explosion. 

The aftermath of the Vought Tower battle

As everyone gets up, Butcher can't get a word out of Ryan, who's chosen Homelander as his new dad. They leave at his behest, ignoring Butcher's pleas. Butcher then passes out as Temp-V takes him down, only for him to wake up in the hospital to be told he doesn't have much time (up to 18 months) left to live, and he's going to get his foot amputated. MM explains to Janine that his past is complicated, and that Soldier Boy killed their relatives. She still loves her dad, though, and tells him he's her hero. 

Back at the hideout, we learn that The Boys pulled a head-fake with that Vought News Network video claiming Maeve is dead. She's still missing an eye, and recovering from the attack without the aid of powers. Elena is actually here to help her ex, and the two will go off the grid away from Homelander's reach. 

Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" plays as the two Ashleys erase footage of Maeve being saved, Grace watches as Soldier Boy goes back into cold storage and Deep's wife tells all about their relationship on TV. At the Flatiron Building HQ, Annie January burns the Starlight suit, and MM gives an invitation for her to join up. Frenchie says The Boys is now a democracy, and everyone agrees she's in. Butcher, at the door, does not object. Then, we learn that Dakota Bob's chosen Victoria as his new VP.

To close it all out, we've got a Vought Tower rally, as Soldier Boy's statue is toppled by Homelander fans, who are united with some carrying very-on-the-nose Stormfront signs. And if the rally wasn't obvious enough, Ryan flies in and gets an introduction, only to be attacked by a protester throwing a plastic bottle. Homelander, in another incredibly obvious political reference, kills this man in broad daylight with tons of witnesses, without any ramifications. And Todd of all people is there to start the adoring applause for this. We really wanted MM there to beat him up.

Where The Boys season 3 leaves things for next season

So, to recap: Homelander's killed Noir and regained his son, and while his press may be very bad, his base is rallied. He still has Neuman, A-Train, Ashley and The Deep as his remaining allies, though all of them seem likely to be plucked away at some point. 

The Boys are united and Starlight is out of The Seven. Soldier Boy's incapacitated and off the board. Butcher doesn't have much time left to live. 

The story for The Boys season 4 is the same as before: stop Homelander. It's just that he now has the ear of the presumptive Vice President. That's gonna make the fight even harder.

Yep, the end is night. But for who? It's almost time for The Boys season 3 episode 8 release date, and we wonder how the Supes and Supe-haters are making it through to The Boys season 4. That said, a big showdown at Vought seems like an obvious end for this season of one of the best Prime Video shows.

We're all dealing with the big twist from this past week's episode. Soldier Boy has a child he doesn't know about: Homelander. Yes, Vought put Soldier Boy in a Russian ice bath because they'd already figured out how to make the better Soldier Boy, in Homie himself. 

After this past week, things became a bit more grim for our antiheroes. Not only are we dealing with the truth about V-24 — that three to five doses can be lethal — but Butcher's not exactly telling his fellow user Hughie. The two, in fact, are en-route to pick up more doses as we creep towards a big confrontation between all involved.

Not that this past episode was short on Supes clashing. Annie January (formerly Starlight) tricked Homelander into airing much of his dirty laundry in public. Including how he killed Supersonic. Always remember to make sure nobody's broadcasting you on Instagram Live.

We've got time to decompress before the The Boys season 3 episode 7 release date. And, boy howdy, we're going to need it. While some folks we've heard claim they overhyped Herogasm, many more said "wow, I wasn't expecting that" as they saw the latest edition of one of the best Prime Video shows.

Unfortunately, the big plan to stop Homelander with Soldier Boy's powers fizzled out faster than those hidden cameras at Herogasm once they were discovered. 

Right now, we've hit another big confrontation moment. Starlight's exposed Homelander, who really didn't need another PR nightmare after last season. Except she's not Starlight anymore. Supe-name be damned, Annie January is back.

Mother's Milk, though, cannot be happy with the way things are going. Not only did Soldier Boy dismiss killing MM's family because he's killed too many families to remember, but wow that big stain MM got this episode. Yikes.

Meanwhile, it seems like Soldier Boy's getting closer to the big secret that's responsible for why he was locked down in Russia. In better news, it seems like the redemption of A-Train has finally pulled into the station after his apology to Hughie.

Here we go! The Boys season 3 episode 6 release date arrived early. Following the events of episode 5, where Hughie (Jack Campbell) and Butcher (Karl Urban) teamed up with someone that, well, left their other friends less than happy. One of the best Prime Video shows keeps getting better, eh?

Yes, folks Hughie and Butcher have allied with Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), and everyone else is angry. Not only is M.M. (Laz Alonso) out for familial revenge put on hold, but Starlight (Erin Moriarty) sees this as another moment where the bar is lowered (again).

That said, since Soldier Boy seemingly knocked the Supe out of Kimiko, it does seem like this unfrozen not-Captain America holds the power to render Homelander vulnerable. But how the heck would The Boys be a show without Homelander?

That all said, the above is probably not what we're going to talk about. That's because The Boys season 3 episode 6 is the Herogasm episode that fans have been waiting for ever since it was announced to be happening during filming. For those who don't know, Herogasm is an annual orgy party that many of the biggest Supes attend. Should make for interesting TV. Looking back to The Boys season 3 episode 1, we only hope nobody sneezes.

The Boys is one of the best Prime Video shows, but it’s no longer the number 1 TV series on the service. That’s because it just got dethroned by a new show, The Summer I Turned Pretty.

The third season of Amazon's comic book-adaptation just released its fifth episode. this past Friday. The adaptation of Garth Ennis’ and Darick Robertson’s comic series has always been good, but season 3 has pushed that to new highs. Unfortunately, good doesn’t always beat new, and The Summer I Turned Pretty has stolen the top spot for itself (as seen on Prime Video's own top 10 rankings on its homepage). And The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 is in the works!

What is The Summer I Turned Pretty about? 

The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on Jenny Han’s young adult romance novel of the same name. It follows Isabel “Belly” Conklin (Lola Tung) on her annual summer vacation to a family friends’ beach house.

Belly is reunited with her friends, brothers Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad (Christopher Briney), the latter of whom she’s had a crush on for years. However, as Conrad begins to return Belly’s affections, it seems as though Jeremiah is vying for her attention putting Belly in the middle of a love triangle.

In other words, it’s different from The Boys in almost every respect. Even if the show does have its own fake love triangle between Homelander, Starlight and Hughie.

What do critics think of The Summer I Turned Pretty? 

The Summer I Turned Pretty seems to be a hit with critics and audiences alike, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting an 82% score from critic reviews and 90% from audiences. The show also has a 7.8/10 score on IMDB.

Abby Cavenaugh of Collider noted that while the show isn’t a word-for-word adaptation of the book, the seven-part series is likely to delight fans of Han’s trilogy of novels. AV Club's Lauren Chval found that “the characters feel lived in, with warm chemistries and rich histories that suggest they are well known by their creator” with a B+ score.

That’s not to say critics don’t have their issues with it. Angie Han, of The Hollywood Reporter, said that the show is a “solid coming-of-ager wrapped in a not-so-good romance”. Amy Amatangelo of Paste Magazine was less kind, noting that while the show tried to capture the idea of first love, growing up and finding your own way, none of it quite works — giving the show a 5.8/10.

Should you watch The Summer I Turned Pretty? 

Yes, but also no. It all depends on where your tastes lie. If you’re a fan of The Boys, then you’ll know that the show is a scathing indictment of multiple aspects of the modern world. Whether that’s superheroes obsessions, corporate power and greed, police brutality, or extremist politics. All with a liberal helping of sex, violence, swearing and gross, irreverent humor.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is a serious teenage coming of age drama, with, well, none of that. It all depends on how varied your tastes are, and whether you enjoy this kind of content. We suspect that there are plenty of people out there with room to enjoy both, so don’t let any of that deter you. Just know what you’re getting yourself in for.

The good news is Amazon released all seven The Summer I Turned Pretty episodes at the same time. That means you can watch through the entire first season should it take your fancy. The show has also been renewed for a second season, which will presumably continue to adapt the story from Han’s trilogy. Though how much will come from the second book, It’s Not Summer Without You, is unclear.

Can The Boys reclaim the top spot? 

Possibly. The thing to remember here is that The Boys and The Summer I Turned Pretty couldn’t be more different. If you watched the first 15 minutes of The Boys’ third season premiere, you’ll know exactly why. It’s not the kind of subject matter you have in most adult-oriented shows, let alone a young adult romance.

The Summer I Turned Pretty’s first season was released in one go, which may cause its ongoing popularity to decline. Similarly, The Boys' upcoming sixth episode, titled Herogasm, is going to adapt one of the more infamous storylines from the comics. 

I won’t spoil any potential plots, but the scale of sex and violence in the show is nothing compared to what Herogasm could have on show.

Okay folks, are your eyes glowing or is it just the The Boys season 3 episode 5 release date? The Boys aren't just back in town, they'll be sticking around for The Boys season 4. Yes, that sound you hear isn't the noise of A-Train running through another innocent, but the sound of applause from Vought— I mean Prime Video HQ, as The Boys' next season just got confirmed.

Prime Video, in a press release dated today (June 10), announced it "has officially ordered a fourth season of its hit Emmy-nominated series The Boys, co-produced with Sony Pictures Television, following the explosive premiere of its third season." How explosive are we talking here? Are we talking about that one wild The Boys season 3 episode 1 scene, or that big boom at the end of episode 3?

Prime Video notes that "Over the first three days of its third season, the worldwide audience for The Boys has grown by +17% from season two, and +234% from season one." This is an interesting bit of metric from Prime Video, as the second season's amazing growth for the series has slowed a bit, as it may have gotten close to its total maximum viewership cap.

The Boys' showrunner Eric Kripke is quoted as saying "We’re thrilled to continue Butcher and the Boys’ fight against Homelander and the Seven, as well as comment on the insane world we’re living in," before dropping a line that references the wildest The Boys season 3 episode 1 moment.

His note about commenting on modern times rings very clearly after Homelander season 3 episode 4 quoted one of former U.S. president Donald J. Trump's tweets. Antony Starr and the series never names Donald J. Trump outright, but in interviews, the actor made it clear he knows who he's parodying.

Analysis: As inevitable as Homelander's creepiness

Amazon's gained and is gaining some big shows — The Wheel of Time season 2, Invincible season 2 and Reacher season 2 are hotly anticipated, as is the new Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series.

But let's be real here: The Boys is practically Prime Video's Stranger Things. It's one of the service's biggest shows, and one that proves that they're still able to shock and surprise.

And since there's a ton of source material (the comic series ran for 72 issues), it always felt like a fourth (and likely fifth) season is an easy assumption to make.

And it is time to stream, as the The Boys season 3 episode 4 release date is here. We wouldn't blame you for having stayed up to watch it, though. Not only has one of the very best Prime Video shows returned with a BANG! (wow that episode 1 scene, right?) but Homelander's latest idea is upsetting to say the least.

Yes, because not only is Homelander's PR spin at full tilt, he's also roped Starlight into a fake relationship to help boost his Q rating (the measurement of one's familiarity and appeal). Of course, this didn't come without a threat, as #Homelight is here for the sake of protecting others. 

In the first three episodes of The Boys season 3 (the one show you should have binge-watched on Amazon Prime Video), we finally met Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), and Billy Butcher's newfound affair with Temp-V is screwing his life up completely. His screaming at Ryan, and blaming the kid for Becca's death, was the kind of moment that even Billy himself couldn't stomach.

Meanwhile, Hughie's going through a lot of frustration, cutting his hand up by accident, going over to the dark side by working with Butcher again to try and find a weapon to stop Homelander.

The Boys is no stranger to political reference or parody, and The Boys season 3 episode 4 just made it all a bit more literal, as a few of Homelander's latest lines sounded especially familiar. So, if Homelander's words on the fictional right-wing talk show The Cameron Coleman Hour near the start of The Boys season 3 episode 4 weren't obvious enough, we've got some words from Anthony Starr, who plays the stars-and-stripes-clad Supe.

Tom’s Guide attended a press roundtable promoting The Boys season 3 where Starr was asked about how his character is parodying the far right. Starr replied by saying that Homelander is "not difficult to figure out, is it? Come on, there’s always been an element of 'that guy' in Homelander, never moreso than in season 3." Editor's note: Expect more, as Prime Video just announced The Boys season 4!

But before you go further, take this spoiler warning for The Boys season 3 episode 4. We don't go into huge detail about the big storyline beats, but we do cover a moment that will have some recalling an obvious moment from recent American political history.

The Boys season 3 remembers 2016

Starr continued, saying "And for we’re literally taking things that he’s said ... and there’s a board room scene that directly relates to the sycophant circle that we saw on the telly." And Starr's words ring true after a moment in The Seven's board room at Vought Tower from The Boys' latest episode.

Homelander's got a big surprise to celebrate the addition of the Supe known as Supersonic (played by Miles Gaston Villanueva), who Vought sees as a chance to score big with the Latino community. 

Homelander, trying to do what he thinks is the right thing, welcomes Supersonic by saying "In your honor, we got a little surprise," and out come extremely-generic-looking taco bowls, one per Supe. Homelander then says "Seriously, we have the best taco bowls. Right here in the building. Bienvenidos, muchacho!" Deep, in a big sycophantic moment, talks through his food and says "this is muy delicioso." 

This is a very thinly (if at all) veiled reference to one of Donald J. Trump's 2016 tweets (unavailable as Twitter took Trump's account down after his words that preceded the violent assault of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021). Back when Mr. Trump was the then-presumptive Republican presidential nominee, he celebrated Cinco De Mayo by posting a photo of himself with a similar-looking taco bowl, and captioned the photo "Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!" 

Note that The Boys' script went so far as to say "the best taco bowls," right before saying that they were made in the corporate tower, just as Trump tweeted. 

Starr elaborated about his feelings regarding the situation, noting "On one hand, I think it’s great that we can parody it, and lovingly poke fun at it. On the other hand, I think it’s tragic that there’s so much material available at the moment to satirize. We’re spoiled for choice, especially as far as my side is concerned.”

Analysis: Of course Homelander isn't Trump to the T

Just so nobody gets us or Antony Starr wrong, nobody's saying that this character is a line for line depiction of the former president. For example, Homelander's odd sexual habits don't seem to be inspired by any headlines from the past six years.

But as The Boys looks to stay relevant and up to the minute, these Trumpian moments sure add a bit of "I remember that!" It's to be seen, though, if all of The Boys' audience finds this amusing or not.

While there's a lot of excitement around the debut of The Boys season 3, its Herogasm episode is likely of the most anticipated editions of the Prime Video series. And while we're excited for all the manic Supe-stuff coming this season, there's no arguing with the interest for an episode as sexually depraved as Herogasm is likely to be.

Veteran readers of The Boys comics have likely been wondering when and how the comics arc dedicated to an all-Supes orgy would actually make it to the screen. And while we can't say anything about the details of the episode (spoilers are the one superpower we won't stand for), we can reveal when the episode titled "Herogasm," will arrive.

The Boys' "Herogasm" episode is its sixth episode of the season, and it's slated to stream on June 24. While we won't say if the events of Herogasm bleed into the previous and following editions, its place as the antepenultimate episode of the season does give you a good idea of how much importance the goings on in the episode will be. 

Herogasm, for the uninitiated, was a limited-arc of The Boys comics that saw The Boys crash a party that's one of the most depraved events on the calendar for Supes. 

And showrunner Eric Kripke told Variety that “The storyline is a massive superhero orgy, so if you can’t do it right, don’t do it. And I feel like we really, really did it right." Kripke also noted that "The poor crew who had to film that, it was like a five or six-day sequence, they would come out of that house smoking cigarettes like they’re Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now, like they’ve just seen some s**t."

How to watch The Boys season 3 anywhere on Earth

I don't know how to put this, but The Boys season 3 episode 1 is a shocking episode even for a show that we expect to shock us. The Prime Video series, which returns to find everyone in different roles — Homelander under public scrutiny, Starlight gaining new leadership and Hughie, Butcher, M.M. and Kimiko actually kinda working for the government  (though with Hughie reporting to Victoria Neuman).

All of that gives you some sense of how much anxiety is coursing through the V-fueled veins of the Supes, and how much sex, drugs and Supe-s**t to expect. Except that I had no idea, really, of what was to come. I only knew that there would be an episode at a Supes orgy known as Herogasm. And that doesn't even take place in the first three episodes.

So, consider this your spoiler warning for The Boys season 3 episode 1, because some of this stuff requires explanation. There's a reason why we've waited until the episode has been released. For a spoiler-free analysis, check out our The Boys season 3 review.

But for all those ready to talk about the nastiest and wildest stuff we just watched, scroll for more:

1. Termite's big sneeze 

At a press junket roundtable session, Claudia Doumit (Victoria Neuman) and Chace Crawford (The Deep) told Tom's Guide that the specific moment I've been thinking about ever since I've started watching The Boys season 3 is also their pick for the most-shocking moment of the new year. 

It's something honestly a bit too shocking for me to describe in great detail here, and I also don't want to spoil too much. 

As you'll see, a Supe known as Termite — who has Ant-Man-like shrinking powers — is having a lot of drug-fueled sexual fun at a house party. And then, well, he decides to take a trip inside the last place I expected he would go. After lingering there for a little bit, he makes a mistake, and a scene that made me squeamish gets all the more disgusting.

Doumit referred to this moment as "The first 15 minutes of episode 1," and Crawford called it "the most insane thing of anything, of any of the moments, of which there are plenty." Doumit then joked "it starts with a bang!" as Crawford referred to it as "right down the straight and narrow."

2. Another head goes "pop!"

This isn't the next moment, but I wanted to save that big surprise for last. But there's a specific clandestine meeting between two characters in The Boys season 3 episode 1 that is another big indicator that The Boys' bloodlust is not over.

They argue, there's a moment of conflict and struggle, and then the pops go off. First, with a limb that's surprising in its sorta-randomness. 

But then the head is snapped open. While this isn't particularly new territory for The Boys, it's the manner in which the head is opened up that's so nauseating (in a good way?). By ripping it open at the jaw-line, while everything above is still visible, it's all the more icky.

Then, we get something I'll call a "cherry rain." I'll also add that the cast member whose character is responsible for this scene told us that they're "oddly used" to moments like this.

All the while, one of The Boys is watching, and struggling to stay silent.

3. An ugly return of The Boys' most heinous character

So, here goes, I'll just say it. Stormfront (Aya Cash) is back and she's more sickening than ever. A mumbling, hospital bed-ridden lump of stumps and bumps, The Boys' resident Third Reich fetishist is far from recovered. 

The way the costume designers and makeup department took out most of her hair and left her skin as this awkward translucent weirdness, you can't help but go "ugh."

And then she gets a little sexual, right as she's starting to talk shop about the ubermensch army she wants to create. These terrible vibes stack on top of each other, and it's all kinds of "WTF?"

Outlook: How will the next five episodes of The Boys go?

So, if The Boys shocks this much out the gate, what the heck is going to happen in the rest of the season? We can't wait to see how over the top they go for Herogasm, but with the shock and gore we've already seen, The Boys has clearly sent a message.

Expect all of the unexpected. This show loves to make us squirm. It's a feature, not a bug.

Surprise! The Boys season 3's release date just moved up, as one of the best Prime Video shows is back. And they've brought a new Supe, too: Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles).

The twist for The Boys season 3 (our pick for the one show to binge-watch right now on Amazon Prime Video) is that everyone's starting off in unfamiliar situations. Homelander is subject to all of the scrutiny in the world, after the whole "I was dating a Nazi" thing with Starlight. But his forced smile and repeated phrase to the press: "out of crisis comes change" makes us wonder how exactly he will change. We're betting on a most twisted and evil Homelander, but ... how?

Meanwhile Hughie's actually got Butcher reporting to him as he works for the government and its most-powerful secret Supe: congresswoman Victoria Neuman. Butcher will get his hands on some V, though, and it will give him a chance to see how he can stand by his beliefs that powers are wrong.

Meanwhile, Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito) lurks in the background, and word has it this season will be as controversial as ever. We've heard that season 3 will be three times as bloody as before, and the Herogasm (you read that right) arc is coming this season. And it's not the craziest part of the season — as we've chronicled The Boys season 3 episode 1's wildest moments — including the one that shocked two cast members more than anything else.

The Boys season 3 reviews 

As we touched on in our The Boys season 3 review, this season isn't just bloodier and wilder than ever, but it's also more emotionally resonant than the previous outings. The cast, with Laz Alonso (M.M.) in particular, get much more meatier character developments, as we learn more about them as people. 

Sure, The Boys season 3 is wilder than ever, episode 6 in particular, but this outing from Eric Kripke and co. is a phenomenal return that will have fans applauding.

Over at IGN, Matt Donato writes "Character beats can be predictable when Butcher regresses as a father or a deadness in his eyes erases what little flickers of humanity grew, but it’s still those character beats that showrunner Eric Kripke does best with The Boys. It's still spectacularly gore-heavy, filled with harsh lessons, and loaded like a powder keg ready to burst once Butcher or Homelander finally lays the gauntlet."

The first full trailer for The Boys season 3 teased the gang's new roles — which sound like just the way that Billy Butcher gets angrier.

And then there's the trailer for Dawn of the Seven, the movie within the show. Hilariously, the fate of the world lies within ... a flash drive. And it's hitting theaters and Vought+, because of course it is.

Our first official look at The Boys season 3 came with the above red band teaser, which seemingly has it all — including giant lasers shooting out of Billy Butcher's eyes. There's also a supes boy band, a patriotic sex toy and a tease of Soldier Boy (more on him below).

From the on-set photos above, we can deduce that Urban, Quaid and Moriarty will be back along with main cast members like Antony Starr as John/Homelander, Dominique McElligott as Maggie Shaw/Queen Maeve, Jessie T. Usher as Reggie Franklin/A-Train, Tomer Capon as Serge/Frenchie, Karen Fukuhara as Kimiko Miyashiro/The Female and more. 

Gaston Villanueva, it's also been revealed, is going to portray the supe known as Supersonic. He formerly dated Starlight, and went by the name Drummer Boy.

There will also be at least two new faces when season 3 of The Boys premieres. The latest addition to the cast is Katia Winter (Dexter) as Little Nina, who has worked with Vought and used a version of Compound V to make new supes. Jensen Ackles of Supernatural fame is also set to appear in the series as Soldier Boy. This character has been referred to on the show in the past and has been described as "the original Superhero.”

Now that new cast member Jensen Ackles is on set, we're seeing a lot more of him — including in full gear. We got our first look at Soldier Boy in costume from Amazon itself, check it out:

And what is The Boys if not a little antagonistic? It looks like Jensen Ackles is fitting in just perfectly on the set, as we see in this photo that Karl Urban posted to Instagram, of the two of them and Jack Quaid flipping the bird. Urban also notes that they're halfway through filming the season.

The latest photo from the set of The Boys season 3 shows that new addition Jensen Ackles has had a bit of a shave. Is this his new look as Soldier Boy? Only time will tell.

Supernatural star Jensen Ackles is arguably the biggest addition to The Boys season 3 cast, and he started filming for the season on the week of April 19. The above photo he shared (which we assume is tied to his character) teases that Soldier Boy may need a haircut.

The Soldier Boy character, as we learned from Mr. Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito) in season 2, was one of the soldiers who was (apparently) a recipient of Compound V during World War II. But unlike Stormfront, Soldier Boy was fighting on the Allied side, as Frederick Vought had already switched sides. 

Soldier Boy, it seems, would be a big riff on Captain America. Or at least that's how he was portrayed in the comic books. There, he led a group named Payback, the team that pre-dates The Seven. His group included Crimson Countess, Eagle the Archer, Tek Knight, Swatto and ... Stormfront.

In an interview with Collider, The Boys' Laz Alonso (who plays Mother's Milk) noted that the addition of Soldier Boy enables The Boys to make "all of the other ensemble Supes darker as well."

Ackles, fresh off of a 15-year stint leading Supernatural, jumped at the role, according to The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke. Specifically, "He texted me back in three minutes and said, 'I definitely want to do this!'" And Ackles was signed on in the next week.

The latest set photo from The Boys season 3 teases a reality show dubbed "American Hero," at play. The site Insauga shared a photo of a $50 million mansion in Mississauga, Ontario, with a billboard that says American Hero at the top. 

Another leak shows that the "Dawn of The Seven" movie is finally hitting theaters.

Antony Starr has reported for duty and put on the Homelander boots, as evidenced by this tweet:

Eric Kripke posted the first photo from the set of The Boys season 3. It's not very revealing, though it is a bit titillating. The photo depicts a gold statue of Homelander and focuses on his, uh, package.

Last fall's finale of The Boys ended with some stunning revelations about Stormfront (Aya Cash). She turned out to be a Nazi and the wife of Vought's founder. 

Season 3 will continue to explore the origins of Vought as well as the Seven. As we noted above, Jensen Ackles has been cast as Soldier Boy. He was part of an original teamed called Payback, whose members included Stormfront, Eagle the Archer, Tek Knight and Chrimson Countess.

"One of the reasons that we're getting into Soldier Boy [in season 3] and that team, Payback, is we're interested in exploring a little bit of how we got here," Kripke told Entertainment Weekly. "Through the history of the supes, we can tell a little bit about the history of America and how we ended up in the current fraught position that we're in. Soldier Boy gives us an opportunity to do that."

That "fraught position" is one where white supremacy and violence still exist and people continue to try to fight back — and it's become even more fraught since Kripke discussed it in October.

"Certain politicians like to pitch this somehow idyllic ‘good old days’ where everything was perfect and calm. That is complete and utter bulls---," Kripke said. "It was never that way. So, by exploring the history of Vought in the history of America, we get to make some of those points. There was never an America when they say ‘Make America Great Again.’ It was always a struggle. That's the point. It's a struggle to make things better."

One the most talked about rumored scenes in The Boys season 3 will be Herogasm, which was basically a sexual retreat for superheroes, the biggest super-powered orgy ever. Kripke told EW that "the dailies are bananas. I've been around the block a few times. I'm a seasoned producer. Every single day on those dailies, my jaw was on the floor. I just could not believe how insane those dailies were. It's just crazy. I can tell you that for anybody who is a fan of the comic and is expecting to see Herogasm, we are delivering it. That is happening." That said, Kripke also said a "crazier thing," is in episode 1.

One thing we can definitely expect from The Boys season 3? There will be blood. 

Laz Alonso, who plays Mother's Milk, told Collider that this may be the most violent season yet — and that's really saying something. 

"I was talking to the head makeup artist and she's in charge of ordering the blood — that's one of her many jobs," he explained. "She told me that all of Season 2... When you talk about bulk, I don't think they used over a gallon of blood in Season 2, believe it or not. Season 3, we're already at three and a half gallons of blood. So that should give you a little indication of where it's going."

The Boys season 3 is here to go full Homelander on your streaming watchlist, blasting eye-beams through your queue. Sure, you might have had plans to stream Obi-Wan, finish Stranger Things 4 volume 1 or (gasp!) go outside, but Prime Video's gang of Supes, Supe-haters and other weirdos is back to make you feel all kinds of squeamish.

I've just binge-watched all eight episodes of The Boys season 3, and while this review will be spoiler-free, I can declare that this is the most shocking season of an already eyebrow-raising show to date. Yes, a show that ended its second season by exploding heads with super-powers has many more tricks up its sleeve, as I'll explain in this The Boys season 3 review.

And The Boys' return is a healthy reminder of why Prime Video is one of the best streaming services. It may not dish out new shows with the sheer volume that Netflix does, but The Boys stays super-strong this season, without any sign up letting up.

Homelander steals The Boys season 3 every chance he gets

Picking up where we left off, The Boys' biggest question is the career rehabilitation for Homelander (Antony Starr), the sick and twisted Supe at the head of the super-team known as The Seven. Last season saw Homelander publicly in a relationship with Stormfront (Aya Cash) who turned out to be Miss Third Reich 1945 in thinly-veiled disguise.

And now that his dirty laundry is public, Homelander has a big PR quest to go on, and it doesn't start well. Throughout the season, though, he learns all about owning his brand, as The Boys gets very topical. 

From rage-fueled rallies to cries about the mainstream media, Homelander's story might make some feel a little awkward, but The Boys doesn't seem to care. Discomfort, often, is the point. 

From Homelander's relationship with his son to his unnerving on-camera presence when he's interviewed at the premiere of Dawn of The Seven, Starr is given plenty of meat to chew on this season. 

The Boys season 3 gets edgier than ever

Throughout just the first episode of The Boys season 3, the series does it best to shock you. I won't spoil any of them here, but, did you ever hear that theory that one way the Avengers could have killed Thanos was by Ant-Man shrinking, going into Thanos' rear and then expanding? Well, it feels like someone at The Boys heard that line and said "not gross enough, let's go wilder." 

In that same episode, we get gross deformities and a squishy fatality in a back alley. It's a great way for The Boys to say "and we've only just begun," while making you wonder what happens next.

The Boys almost treads too close to the sun when it comes the the blood and guts, but when they do, the cast's reactions to the viscera always grounds the series away from jumping the Sharknado.

The Boys season 3 makes you care about these characters more than ever

One of the issues I've had with the first two seasons of The Boys is that it often felt like it was leaning too hard on shock value and not enough on character development. But over these eight hours, audiences will gain a stronger connection with many (but not all) of the Supes they've been watching for years. 

For me, this came with one character I was hoping would get more time, and many characters I hadn't expected to become more humanized. Some of my favorite work from this season comes from Laz Alonso, who plays Mother's Milk (aka M.M., aka Marvin T. Milk). While we've long seen his tics, this season gives a depth to his character and backstory that is both engaging and necessary. As those around him are tempted to lower their ethical standards, M.M. becomes the heart of The Boys.

Through various means, we also learn a bit more of who Billy Butcher is, why Homelander is so weird and we get a surprising amount of Dark Noir's backstory. The other big twist of the season, though, comes for A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), whose story goes from farce to powerful over the season. It's all told gradually enough for it to be believable and not rushed, thankfully.

Starlight's also got a fantastic story this season, as she's offered more power with The Seven. And, thankfully, The Boys doesn't send her down a predictable plot of being asked to do things and becoming corrupt. If previous seasons did a fair job giving us teases of the power struggle at Vought, The Boys season 3 wins by going full Game of Thrones.

And that's a good thing, especially when it means more of Giancarlo Esposito as Stan Edgar. Esposito is currently enjoying a Supe-level run on some of the best shows on TV (he's also Gus Fring on Better Call Saul and Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian), and each scene of his is a delight. 

Oh, and about Jensen Ackles in The Boys season 3

Jensen Ackles, best known for playing good guy Dean Winchester in Supernatural for what felt like an eternity, fits right at home as Soldier Boy, who is basically a satire of Captain America. Again, I'm going spoiler-free here, but it's safe to say that the Soldier Boy you get here is anything but the Dean fans have watched over the last years.

This is some ingenious casting and work on the part of showrunner Eric Kripke, who also created Supernatural. I'm curious how long Kripke had planned for this casting, as it seems like a match made in a very perverted corner of heaven.

Verdict: The Boys keeps Prime Video strong

Just like how Stranger Things 4 arrived on Netflix right when the big red streaming machine needed a win, The Boys arrives in a particularly interesting moment for Prime Video. The streaming service most people get as an Amazon Prime membership perk is a little slower than most to roll out new seasons of its biggest hits. 

As I've conveyed in this The Boys season 3 review, this season is so good that it's noteworthy I was able to gush about it without even mentioning another solid performance from Jack Quaid, whose Hughie Campbell goes through a lot this season. Talking about his arc would border too much upon the spoiler-zone, so I thought I'll save that for my next piece on the show.

For now, know that The Boys season 3 is one of the very best shows you can watch right now, and I'm not just saying that because I'm worried Homelander could intimidate me with a single unnerving smile.

Amazon Prime Video has a slower rotation of returning shows than some of the best streaming services, so knowing when to cancel and when to resubscribe is a bit of a different equation. 

This month there's only one real big returning show on the horizon: The Boys. 

For some, resubscribing to Prime Video for The Boys is a "no duh, already ready" moment — as it's one of the service's biggest hits. That said, back when season 2 was airing, I wasn't feeling it. 

But then, one second chance later? I was converted. And since The Boys season 3 (one of our picks for the new shows to watch in June) is almost here, I'm here to explain why you gotta watch The Boys. And, yes, the first (small) reason is simple: make the most of your Amazon Prime membership.

Watch The Boys to fight MCU fatigue

If there's one common pop culture gripe I see and hear around many of my friends, family and colleagues, it's that people are tired of superhero movies. Heck, one of my colleagues has declared it's time for Marvel movies to die. Another declared that Moon Knight was pushing him away from Marvel's TV shows. It's so in vogue right now to say "enough" that all sorts of folks, including beloved pro wrestler Adam Page) are tired of them. And while The Boys is about super-powered people, it's not about superheroes at all. 

The Boys presents a world where the 'supes' (as they're called) are corporatized, and many of them are practically villainous. Chief among them is Homelander, a pitch-perfect satirization of Superman. Played by Antony Starr, Homelander is a caped super-dude with bleach-blonde hair (with obvious dark roots to highlight how phony he is)  and a too-perfect smile. He is also The Boys' central villain.

So, who do you send to fight an evil Superman? You wouldn't pick an everyman, but you didn't write The Boys (unless comics legend Garth Ennis, who created The Boys, is reading this, and, well, hello, sir). 

Our primary protagonist is Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), who had a pretty boring life. Emphasis on 'had.' One day, he's just living at home with his dad and treasuring every minute with girlfriend Robin. The next? Hughie's life is thrown into shambles when a tragedy involving a super-fast 'supe' tears his life into pieces. Just like how anger leads to the dark side, Hughie's changed by this moment and desires revenge. And so he's a prime target for Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), a supe-hating vigilante.

The pair (along with others) look to uncover the truths about Vought, the company that employs Homelander and the rest of the supes he works with. Along the way, they discover a whole lot of dirt. I won't spoil anything here, but The Boys is a show that rewards sticking around, with shocking reveal after shocking reveal. And by that I don't mean surprise betrayals. I mean the surprising "they didn't just do that!" moments you get from movies with a hard-R rating, and not the PG-13 MCU.

Along the way, we also meet other supes who are pulled into the Vought system and miserable about that life. Starlight (Erin Moriarty) and Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) are prime examples, who show how there is no ethical consumption under superhero capitalism. Especially when they have to work alongside particularly stupid and perverse supes.

The Boys even has (some) romance

There are a few of relationships at the core of The Boys, and Hughie's is the primary one. The kid falls for Starlight, and the two engage in a particularly complicated situation, filled with lies and spandex. And no matter how over-the-top The Boys gets, their moments help ground the show.

Then, there's the story of Billy Butcher and his wife Becca. While it may at first seem like The Boys is telling a tired story with her, trust me: it's not. The arc that Billy's taken over the first two seasons of The Boys is fantastic stuff.

Even Homelander has something of a love life, but it's a little too R-rated for me to publish the details of it on this site. Safe to say, Homelander's squeaky-clean image has more darkness underneath than even his roots suggest.

How much time do you have until The Boys is back?

The Boys season 3 release date is Friday (June 3). This means you have a little under a week to see if The Boys is your kind of show — if you want to watch the new season with everyone else. 

Season 3's first three episodes will drop together, then the following episodes come out one by one. So, you should try an episode or few now, and then see if you just push all other shows away until you've watched all 16-ish hours of the first two seasons (eight episodes a piece, each around an hour long).

Why am I pushing you to rush through The Boys? Well, from what we've heard, it seems like season 3 is going to be as talked-about as any before it. That's because not only are they adding a Captain America-like hero named Soldier Boy (played by Jensen Ackles, best known for Supernatural), but that there's going to be an extremely-graphic all-supes orgy scene, known as 'Herogasm' in the original comics.

You'll probably sit down to watch The Boys Presents: Diabolical online because this looks like the next best thing to The Boys season 3. Yes, while we wait for the real-deal live action version of the Supes and their incredibly NSFW adventures, Seth Rogen's bringing his show to the second dimension, with some help from other famous folks.

The below trailer teases that this series won't just be b-sides of the Vought Cinematic Universe, as Homelander shows up pretty early. We're guessing those images are from the episode entitled "Laser Baby's Day Out," which comes from Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg. According to Prime Video, this episode is inspired by "classic American animated shorts," so expect it to satirize traditional wholesome cartoons.

There's also going to be some "Rick and Morty" flavor in this "The Boys" project, with an episode from Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth entitled "An Animated Short Where Pissed-Off Supes Kill Their Parents." Prime Video's press release notes that this is "inspired by Justin Roiland's aesthetic."

The Boys creator Garth Ennis is penning an episode as well, as are Ilana Glazer, Awkwafina, Aisha Tyler and Andy Samberg. Full details can be found below.

How to watch The Boys Presents: Diabolical anywhere on Earth

Much of the hype around The Boys season 3 centers around new cast member Jensen Ackles, who is set to play Soldier Boy. And we just got our first look at his new gear and shield.

Today, The Boys' Twitter account posted two photos of Ackles in gear. This follows Ackles' post that showed off a closeup of Solider Boy's shield. We knew the full look was coming, as Ackles captioned the post with an even bigger tease, saying the "Full character reveal" is coming "tomorrow!!!" (which is, now, today).

The Solider Boy gear has a green and black look, which is a bit odd. The character is supposed to be a riff on Captain America, but this look doesn't scream American Patriotism.

But about that shield. Ackles' tweet says "Every dent, every scratch, every mark tells a story. A story that ends with me, winning. #SoldierBoy #SoldierBoyShield" with a smirking face emoji. 

Comparing that gear and shield to the one in the comics, it looks pretty real, but without the red tones seen there. 

The Boys, inarguably one of Amazon Prime Video's biggest shows, has yet to reveal when its third season will arrive. And while Karl Urban and the gang have thrilled us for two whole seasons, Ackles' arrival as Soldier Boy is as exciting as things have gotten for the show in a while. Ackles, who just ended work on Supernatural after 15 seasons, has a role that has much weight in the history of The Boys' universe.

Soldier Boy (in the comics) was a big old coward, but also a recipient of Compound V. He fought during World War II, and got the serum because Frederick Vought had switched sides to work with the Allies by that time. Soldier Boy was a part of a group named Payback, which sounds like The Seven before The Seven. And Stormfront was a member. Interesting, right?

We're still waiting on a release date for The Boys season 3, which is still filming. At the start of June, we learned that the show was half-way through production, and that Ackles had just started filming his scenes. At this rate, we're not sure when a release date will be revealed.

There will be blood on The Boys season 3 — even more than previous seasons. Considering we've already seen heads exploding on the Amazon Prime Video drama, that's going to be a lot of blood.

The Boys cast member Laz Alonso teased season 3's bloody future in an interview with Collider. Alonso, who plays Mother's Milk, revealed that the show's makeup artists are using three times as much fake blood.

"I'll put it to you this way. I was talking to the head makeup artist and she's in charge of ordering the blood — that's one of her many jobs," Alonso explained. 

"She told me that all of Season 2... When you talk about bulk, I don't think they used over a gallon of blood in Season 2, believe it or not. Season 3, we're already at three and a half gallons of blood. So that should give you a little indication of where it's going."

The Boys season 3 is currently in production and Alonso also revealed that filming is "between one-fourth of the way through and halfway through." 

Season 3 brings in new cast member Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, a dark version of Captain America who is the "original superhero” in The Boys universe. And it seems Soldier Boy brings out the worst in his fellow superheroes. 

According to Alonso he's "a character historically who's pretty dark, but it also makes all of the other ensemble Supes darker as well." 

Creator Eric Kripke has previously confirmed the next installment of the show will adapt the source comics' "Herogasm" storyline, which is a satiric take on traditional superhero teams like The Avengers. In the arc, the superheroes pretend to leave Earth to fight an alien threat but actually head to an island resort for a drug-fueled orgy.

With The Boys season 3 still filming, and not close to wrapping, fans should not expect to see new episodes until 2022.

The latest casting for The Boys season 3 has been announced, and so it's time to welcome mob boss Little Nina to the supes scene. Katia Winter (Dexter, Sleepy Hollow) is reportedly playing the fan favorite, who joins Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) the other big-name addition to the Amazon Prime Video show. 

This casting news came from Deadline's Nellie Andreeva, who noted that while Winter's casting is confirmed, the details of her playing Little Nina aren't as official. Why is that? Well it may be because — sound the spoiler alert sirens dear readers — Little Nina's history in the comic books will set her character up for quite a notorious run.

Rare is it that casting news is also paired with expectations for how said character will die, but The Boys is a very unique show. And since this is The Boys we're talking about here, the spoiler that follows isn't for the kids, either.

In The Boys comics, Little Nina worked with Vought, and made enemies with Butcher and the gang when she started making more supes using a weaker version of Compound V. Little Nina was synonymous with her love of sex toys, though, so Butcher put an end to her run by sneaking an explosive into something — which she then used while on a plane.

As noted above, Winter's not the only new face on The Boys' new season. Jensen Ackles is playing the role of Solider Boy, a riff on the patriotic Captain America character. One wonders if Little Nina and Soldier Boy will find themselves on the same side of the battlefield, as the latter was one of the original supes, gaining Compound V during World War II when Frederick Vought switched sides to join the allies. We don't know if Soldier Boy will re-emerge in the world of The Boys on the same side as he previously fought, as this is all informed speculation based on the comics.

The Boys season 3 is currently in production, and no release date has been given for when it will arrive on Prime Video. We expect it to arrive in early 2022, after The Boys spinoff show announced last year.

The hype for The Boys season 3 has begun. We've just gotten the first glimpse from the set of the next season of Amazon Prime Video's biggest TV show, and — surprise — it's all about Homelander.

The Prime Video series' second season was so beloved and intensely devoured that we know Amazon can't wait to get season 3 online immediately. And we can thank The Boys' head writer Eric Kripke for the first glimpse of what's happening in the new season.

For starters, we can see that someone still loves Homelander, as Kripke's photo reveals that a giant gold statue of the Supe is on the set.

The image is oddly framed, starting at the Homelander statue's crotch and looking upward. Though, given everything we've learned about Homelander, it would be weird if the character was depicted in a more wholesome manner. 

Kripke revealed that production on The Boys season 3 was beginning late last month, when he posted a selfie at the airport.

Of course, the whole gang's back on set as well. Karl Urban (Billy Butcher) posted a selfie on Instagram in costume. HIs caption thanks the production crew which he says is "taking every precaution to ensure our continued health and safety.

Erin Moriarty (Starlight) and Jack Quaid (Hughie Campbell) both posted the same selfie of the pair, presumably on set. Quaid's caption reads "Season-Three’s greetings, everyone! We’re chilly but we have absolutely zero chill."

No such social media post from Antony Starr (Homelander), which may be the actor keeping secrets about the current state of Homelander.

Given that filming has just begun, it's hard to see the show returning any earlier than the end of 2021.
