Those old Disney Channel movie bumpers never fail to churn up plenty of nostalgia, making me misty-eyed over the golden age of DCOMs. Disney, in its latest bid to mine that highly profitable vein dry, released "Camp Rock 3" this week on Disney+ and Hulu. It's got all the catchy songs and feel-good teen drama that made "Camp Rock" such a beloved part of many childhoods to begin with. But if you're not ready to leave that world behind just yet, there's plenty more Disney Channel nostalgia to stream.

On August 1, Hulu added several cult made-for-TV classics that are worth revisiting if you're looking for another throwback this weekend. You can also find them on Disney+. From musical romances to high-school comedies, there's plenty of movies that capture the same fun, over-the-top energy as "Camp Rock 3."

'The Lizzie McGuire Movie' (2003)

"The Lizzie McGuire Movie" was played on repeat in my house growing up, the closest thing to an aughts jukebox musical we had until "Mamma Mia" had us belting out "Dancing Queen" two years later. Based on the show of the same name, it stars Hillary Duff as the lovable but hopelessly out of her depth Lizzie, who heads to Rome on a school trip where a dreamy Italian pop star (Yani Gellman) mistakes her for his ex singing partner.

He convinces Lizzie to take her place on stage and lip-sync along to her parts, kicking off a whirlwind romance that's stuffed to the brim with early-2000s Disney charm. For more breezy, feel-good energy and catchy musical moments like in "Camp Rock 3," this is the one to watch.

'High School Musical' (2006)

Of course, no Disney Channel movie marathon would be complete without "High School Musical." Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens are iconic as Troy and Gabriella, a jock and a transfer student who fall for each other while auditioning for their school's musical. To everyone's surprise they land the lead parts, but drama class royalty Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and her twin Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) won't be overshadowed that easily.

Between its huge musical numbers and cast of instantly memorable characters, it's probably the closest match to "Camp Rock 3" on this list. Director Kenny Ortega is behind several cult classic DCOMs, from "Hocus Pocus" to the first three "Descendants" movies.

'Halloweentown' (1998)

Sure it's August, but it's never too early to start celebrating Halloween. Especially with Hulu adding the first two "Halloweentown" movies this month. This holiday staple follows Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown), a teenager whose widowed mother (Judith Hoag) refuses to let her kids celebrate Halloween.

When her kooky grandmother Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) leaves after her annual Halloween visit, Marnie and her brother (Joey Zimmerman) secretly follow her back to Halloweentown, a fantastical city they thought was only in storybooks. Packed with plenty of cozy Halloween vibes, it's a nostalgic pick for anyone looking for a blast from the past to reconnect with their inner child.

"Lanterns" brings the Green Lantern Corps to live-action once more, as Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler join forces for a gritty, grounded version of the superhero story.

Imagine waking up behind your best friend's eyes, staring across the room at your own body. That unsettling "what if" is the premise of "It's What's Inside," and it might be the most overlooked thriller sitting on Netflix right now. It made plenty of noise on the festival circuit when it debuted in 2024, but after landing on Netflix, it promptly got buried under everything else in the queue.

That's a shame, because writer-director Greg Jardin's feature debut is one of the sharpest, strangest things — pun intended — that the platform has added in ages. It’s a body-swap mystery that turns a pre-wedding reunion into a neon-soaked head trip.

What is 'It's What's Inside' about?

Eight years after they were last together, a group of college friends reunites at the estate of groom-to-be Reuben (Devon Terrell) the night before his wedding. The crew includes anxious Shelby (Brittany O'Grady) and her thoughtless boyfriend Cyrus (James Morosini), influencer Nikki (Alycia Debnam-Carey), trust-fund kid Dennis (Gavin Leatherwood), artist Brooke (Reina Hardesty), and free-spirited Maya (Nina Bloomgarden).

Things get dicey when Forbes (David Thompson) crashes the party; he's an estranged friend no one has seen since a college scandal got him expelled. He arrives carrying a mysterious suitcase containing a device that allows the group to swap consciousnesses. What starts as an innocent party game ("guess who's inside who?") quickly spirals into something much, much darker.

Jardin color-codes and tracks the swaps just enough to help you keep up, but the film is at its most fun when you're completely confused about who is actually who. As the night wears on and everyone stops trusting their own reality, the game begins to feel like a high-stakes hostage situation. Who is really driving each body? And what happens to the people who don't make it back into their own?

Why I recommend streaming 'It's What's Inside'

Most of us have looked at someone else’s life—the prettier one, the richer one, the one who seems to have it all figured out—and wondered what it would be like to trade places. "It's What's Inside" gives its characters the chance to climb inside the exact person they envy most, but it doesn't play out the way any of them expect.

Jardin has noted that the body-swapping is really a metaphor for the curated versions of ourselves we perform online. That might sound heavy, but the movie plays most of its themes for deliciously uncomfortable comedy, keeping you delightfully off-balance as you try to piece together what's actually happening.

It's also one of the best-looking movies Netflix has released recently. Drenched in vivid neon hues, it feels closer to a sleek nightclub experience or a high-concept video game than a standard horror film. Because it actively rewards your full attention, it’s far from a background "fold the laundry" or "scroll on your phone" watch.

"It's What's Inside" is a stylish, mean, and clever little thriller about how well we really know the people we love—and how much we'd change about ourselves if given the chance. If you're looking for something genuinely original for your next movie night, give this one a spin.

With “The End of Oak Street” hitting the big screen this weekend, it’s got movie fans in the mood for anything that features dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures. When you talk about the best dinosaur movies, there’s basically a default answer: “Jurassic Park.” But what about the dino-themed flicks beyond Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic (and its numerous sequels)?

Considering the enduring popularity of dinosaurs, the competition to be the best dinosaur movie not called “Jurassic Park” is surprisingly sparse. Nevertheless, I’ve still been able to round up five movies vying for the title. These range from action-focused efforts to family movies that put a more colorful spin on the long-extinct oversized lizard-like creatures.

So while you won’t find “Jurassic Park” on this list (nor any of the “Jurassic World” movies), here’s the best alternative dinosaur movies to consider streaming this weekend.

‘The Land Before Time’ (1988)

“The Land Before Time” might look like a children’s Saturday morning cartoon, and while it’s definitely a movie suitable for the whole family, don’t be surprised if it has you bawling your eyes out. This animated film gives “Bambi” a run for its money in the “making adults tear up” department. Steven Spielberg also worked as an executive producer on the film, giving it a slight connection to “Jurassic Park.”

The movie centers on Littlefoot, a young herbivorous dinosaur, separated from his herd by an earthquake. Meeting fellow orphaned dinos, Littlefoot and his new pals set out on a quest to locate the fabled Great Valley and be reunited with his family. The good news is that if you enjoy the first “Land Before Time,” then there are 13 (yes, 13!) sequels. Just be aware these are all direct-to-DVD fodder, and don’t match the quality of the original.

‘65’ (2023)

Cards on the table, I’m not a fan of “65.” I even ranked it among my least favorite movies of 2023. But that’s just my personal opinion. I’ve included it on this list because of its respectable 64% viewer score on Rotten Tomatoes, proving that at least some people enjoyed this sci-fi thriller. One of those people would be my colleague Alix Blackburn, who argues it’s “one of the most underrated sci-fi thrillers” and advises you to “ignore the critics.”

Kylo Ren himself, Adam Driver, plays an interstellar astronaut named Mills, who crash-lands on Earth. Only it’s our planet 65 million years in the past. If the bumpy landing that destroyed his craft wasn’t enough to deal with, prehistoric Earth is home to some very dangerous creatures: dinosaurs. Mills faces a desperate battle to find a way home while taking a fellow survivor under his wing, a young girl named Koa (Arriana Greenblatt).

‘King Kong’ (2005)

I’m maybe stretching the definition of a dinosaur movie here. After all, “King Kong” is really about an oversized ape wreaking havoc across NYC. But before he’s transported to the Big Apple, Kong is ruling over Skull Island, a mysterious location that is home to not just the skyscraper-climbing ape but also plenty of dinosaurs. And it’s hard not to have fun watching King Kong punch a pack of dinos in the face. Tell me that doesn’t sound appealing to you?

This epic Peter Jackson movie, which gives his “Lord of the Rings” movies a run for their money with an equally butt-numbingly long runtime, is actually the second remake of the 1933 original. It stars Naomi Watts, Jack Black, Adrien Brody and Andy Serkis, and follows a group of filmmakers in the 1930s as they travel to Skull Island to shoot a movie. Once on location, they encounter King Kong and more exotic dangers on the tropical island.

‘The Good Dinosaur’ (2015)

“The Good Dinosaur” is a memorable movie in Pixar’s canon, but not necessarily for the right reasons. The movie marked the end of the animation studio’s hot streak and became its first box office failure. The family adventure film struggled to recoup its large budget, and its messy development cycle was evident on screen. But it’s still a charming Pixar movie at its core, with strong animation and a cast of likable characters.

Perhaps taking cues from “The Land Before Time,” in “The Good Dinosaur,” a young apatosaurus (those are the dinos with really long necks) named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) is separated from his family during a rainstorm and must team up with a feral child (Jack Bright), whom Arlo happens to blame for the death of his father (Jeffrey Wright), to return home. It’s your classic story of unexpected friendship on a grand adventure.

‘One Million Years B.C.’ (1966)

“One Million Years B.C.” caused quite the stir upon its release in 1966, and it wasn’t because of its big-screen depiction of dinosaurs. Second only to Princess Leia in the iconic swimwear department, Raquel Welch dons a fur-covered bikini, which became an enduring image and was used aggressively in the film's marketing. But looking beyond the uncomfortable objectification of its female lead, this ‘60s movie is still a Hollywood classic.

Naturally, it’s aged considerably in the decades since release, so if you want incredibly lifelike CGI dinosaurs, steer well clear, but if you can appreciate old-school effects, this movie has its charms. It sees a caveman, Tumak (John Richardson), exiled from his tribe, before wooing Loana (Welch) from a rival group. Together they venture out into the harsh prehistoric world and face all sorts of hurdles, including dinosaurs, earthquakes and more.

Looking for the best movies to stream on Mubi? Or do you not even know what Mubi is? If you haven't heard of Mubi, that's OK. It's understandable. What it's about: Oscar Restrepo (Ubeimar Rios) is a poet ... but not a successful one. This has led to him not being well-liked by anyone, including his family. But that all changes when he meets a young girl, Yurlady (Rebeca Andrade), with enough poetic talent to rewrite his own legacy.

Why you should watch it: "A Poet" was an Oscar contender last year for Best International Feature Film after winning the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes. I've been waiting for it to arrive on Mubi, and can't wait to see it now that it's finally here.

'Shiva Baby' (2020)

Genre: Comedy movie

What's it about? "Shiva Baby" stars Rachel Sennott as Danielle. She's a young bisexual Jewish woman who hasn't exactly figured her life out. That lack of direction is on full display when she's forced to attend a shiva with her parents. But the real scene-stealer is Danielle's successful ex-girlfriend Maya (Molly Gordon), who arrives at the shiva with her sugar daddy Max (Danny Deferrari), his wife Kim (Dianna Agron), and their screaming baby.

Why you should watch it: This movie is funny. You're guaranteed to laugh. It's also one of the movies on Mubi you're most likely to have seen or heard about already, as it has made the rounds on streaming services before and been a hit. I know it's second on the list, but I'd almost advocate watching it first.

'Amores Perros' (2000)

Genre: Spanish-language psychological drama movie

What's it about? "Amores Perros" is constructed of three stories. All three are connected by a car crash in Mexico City. One centers on Octavio (Gael García Bernal), who gets involved in the local dogfighting scene. Another stars Goya Toledo as a model who seriously injures her leg in a car crash with Octavio. The third story is focused on a mysterious hitman (Emilio Echevarría) who is in the middle of a job when Octavio's car crash occurs.

Why you should watch it: This movie is important for two reasons. First, it's a breakout performance for Bernal, who followed it up the following year with Alfonso Cuarón's "Y tu mamá también." It is also the debut film for Alejandro González Iñárritu, who went on to direct "Birdman," "The Revenant," and this year's "Digger." It's an undeniable must-watch.

'Fremont' (2023)

Genre: Drama movie

What's it about? Donya (Anaita Wali Zada) lives in a tight-knit community of Afghan immigrants in Fremont, California. She works in San Francisco, unable to break out of her routine or process her past as a translator for the U.S. government in Afghanistan. But an appointment with a therapist (Gregg Turkington) and a promotion finally get her to break out and travel, where she meets a quiet auto mechanic (Jeremy Allen White).

Why you should watch it: This film is emotionally balanced and complex, and Zada's performance has earned significant praise from critics. Plus, you get some Jeremy Allen White, and not in a kitchen or as a CGI Hutt. So that's a nice bonus.

'The Substance' (2024)

Genre: Body horror movie

What's it about? "The Substance" stars Demi Moore as a fading celebrity who turns to a black market drug after her producer (Dennis Quaid) fires her. That drug creates a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley), and this version is still worthy of Hollywood. But the drug comes with some serious side effects.

Why you should watch it: One could argue I saved the best for last here. I loved this movie, though my hot take might be that Quaid sneakily gives the best performance in it. If you're squeamish, you might not be able to handle it. But otherwise, you need to watch it, whether you're a horror fan or not.

Looking for something scary to watch tonight? You're in luck, because Hulu's horror catalog got a major upgrade in August. While it's shaping up to be a strong year for new horror movies, there are still plenty of twisted tales from years past to be found on the best streaming services.

I love horror movies, and I'm always looking for an excuse to shout out slept-on gems other fans need to check out. Some, like Ti West's "Pearl," already get plenty of hype (and for good reason). Others like "The Blackening" are so clearly made with fans of the genre in mind that it needs to be on the radar of any horror fan worth their salt. Both landed on Hulu at the top of the month alongside dozens of new movies and shows.

To save you from endless scrolling in the dark, I've rounded up the absolute best horror movies on Hulu right now. From slow-burn nightmares to laugh-out-loud gorefests, here is what you should be streaming on Hulu this weekend — if you dare. 'The Blackening' (2023)

Starting things off on a lighter note, "The Blackening" is a self-aware horror movie that deliberately leans into a familiar tropes as part of its satire. If you’ve seen even a handful of slasher films, you probably already know where this is going. Some friends head to a secluded cabin in the woods for a carefree weekend getaway, only to stumble on a strange board game that forces them into a deadly game with no way out. To make it through the night, they’ll need to rely on their knowledge of horror movie stereotypes, though whether it'll be enough to save them is anyone's guess.

While it definitely leans more comedy than horror, "The Blackening" is a smart deconstruction of the genre that I really enjoyed. I was cracking up when I saw it in theaters a few years ago, and it made me fondly remember the "Scary Movie" franchise back before all those sloppy sequels muddied the waters.

'Pearl' (2022)

Ti West's entire "X" trilogy landed on Hulu this month, and "Pearl" is the best of the bunch by a country mile. And while it's the middle entry, it also works on its own as a standalone story. "The Odyssey's" Mia Goth gives the performance of a lifetime as Pearl, a disturbed young woman with her sights set on Hollywood — if she can get out from under the thumb of her overbearing mother (Tandi Wright) long enough to shoot her shot.

When her wealthy sister-in-law lets her know about a troupe in town auditioning new dancers to take on the road, Pearl sees it as her ticket to finally get off the farm. If only it were that easy. When her chances at stardom threaten to crumble right before her eyes, she doesn't handle it well. And I mean at all. This unsettling psychological horror owes much of its success to Goth, who kills it as a hungry starlet who'll stop at nothing for her 15 minutes of fame.

'Ready or Not 2: Here I Come' (2026)

2019's "Ready or Not" was a surprisingly good time, and while I'm still not fully convinced a sequel needed to exist, "Ready or Not 2: Here I come" delivers enough bloody carnage, comic chaos, and inventive kills to keep you entertained. Samara Weaving reprise her role as Grace (Samara Weaving), now deeply traumatized after surviving a deadly game of Hide and Seek with her husband's family.

After reuniting with her estranged sister, Faith (Kathryn Newton), the two are quickly pulled into another lethal game of cat and mouse because REASONS. This time around, the ones pulling the strings are an elite cohort of families vying for control of a secret Satanic cult. Grace and Faith must set aside their differences and work together if they hope to make it out alive.

Summer is flying by, and we're all trying really hard not to think about it. It's terribly muggy where I'm at near Chicago (damn these corn sweats!) so, like a lot of folks, I'm catching up on my watchlist this weekend. And all the new releases across the best streaming services really doesn't help me narrow down what to watch.

The Netflix Top 10 is as good a place to start as anywhere, though not everything that makes the cut is worth your time. That's why, every weekend, I'm here perusing the Netflix Top 10 to spotlight the best of the bunch so you don't waste your movie night with yet another dud.

This week, we've got TWO new movies in the top 10 that are worth watching, which is rare! "Don't Say Good Luck" is a heartfelt comedy-drama starring Adam Sandler's daughter, and it's easily one of Netflix's best new movies in ages. For something grittier, "A Child of My Own" is a true crime documentary that goes off the rails in the second half. Finally, if you're craving more Spidey after "Brand New Day," I can't recommend "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" enough. It's one of the best Spider-Man movies to date — and yes, that includes the live-action ones.

I didn't go into "Don't Say Good Luck" with high hopes given the dismal state of Netflix original movies so far this summer, but I was pleasantly surprised by how heartwarming and genuine it was. Though that could just be my big fat crush on "Yellowjackets'" Melanie Lynskey talking.

Produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore company and starring the comedian's real-life daughter Sunny, "Don't Say Good Luck" follows a 16-year-old theater kid named Sophie trying to land her dream role in her high school's upcoming production of the popular Broadway musical “Waitress. When her mom (Lynskey) discovers her cancer has returned, Sophie's torn between spending more time with her and preparing for the part. Between her dad (Max Greenfield) struggling to hold down the fort and her two opinionated grandparents (Bebe Neuwirth and Steve Buscemi) "helping" out, her home life gets even more chaotic.

'A Child of My Own' (2026)

Netflix has spent the summer dropping one shocking true crime documentary after another, from "The Crash" and "Maternal Instinct" to "A Toxic Love Story." The latest addition, "A Child of My Own," goes places even I didn't see coming. Directed by Maite Alberdi ("The Mole Agent"), the Spanish-language documentary revisits the case of Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza, who was arrested in 2009 for kidnapping a newborn from a hospital.

If you're thinking this is just "Maternal Instinct" all over again, I promise you, you have no idea where this story's going. Around the halfway point, Mendoza and her husband speak on camera about their version of events, and they paint a very different picture of what happened. As more details emerge, the documentary shifts from a straightforward kidnapping case into something far more complicated, suggesting that systemic failures may be the true villain all along.

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' (2018)

I finally saw "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" in theaters this week, expecting it to be the shot in the arm the MCU's desperately needed for years. That's what people have hyped it up as. My impression: It's fine. A by-the-numbers Spidey story that doesn't quite stack up to "No Way Home" and its charming cameos from webslinger's past.

If you don't have Disney+, watching the live-action Spidey movies is tough. I suspect that's why so many Netflix subscribers are revisiting "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse." Sony Pictures Animation, the same studio behind "K-Pop Demon Hunters," is an absolute tour de force of talent, and this movie pioneered a more dynamic visual style that continues to redefine the animation industry. Beneath all that, though, it's also a really heart-warming story about making your own way when everyone and their mother has written you off. That iconic leap of faith scene still gives me chills.

“The Shallows” is a movie I’ve written about quite a few times already, as it seems to be the type of film that makes its rounds on streaming services like Prime Video and Hulu before dropping off completely for a while. Now that it’s landed on Netflix, I feel the need to shout about it, especially given that 2026 has delivered quite a few shark movies, but none of them have quite been a success in my eyes. “The Shallows” remains one of the best shark films of the past decade, so naturally, it comes highly recommended.

I first saw “The Shallows” in theaters with my friends, and I remember it being a film we immediately started talking about once the credits rolled. Of course, 10 years ago, there weren’t that many shark movies around, and the only thing you could really compare it to was the iconic “Jaws” (nothing could ever top that). But “The Shallows” ended up being a surprisingly strong entry in the genre. It was one of those times I was very glad to be sitting in a theater with my bucket of popcorn rather than anywhere near the ocean.

Since it’s now available on Netflix, I’d urge anyone with an appetite for a good survival thriller to stream it this weekend. Starring Blake Lively, the film pits her against a deadly great white shark, and here’s why it’s worth adding to your Netflix watchlist.

What is ‘The Shallows’ about?

“The Shallows” follows Nancy Adams (Blake Lively), a medical student who travels to a secluded beach in Mexico to surf alone. After spending some time in the water, Nancy decides to catch one final wave before heading back to shore, only to encounter a great white shark. The shark attacks her, leaving her with a serious injury and forcing her to swim to a small rock for safety.

Unfortunately, Nancy is stranded around 200 yards from shore, with the shark continuing to circle the area between her and the beach. As the tide begins to rise, the rock she is using for protection becomes increasingly unsafe, leaving her with limited options. With no one around to immediately come to her rescue, Nancy has to assess the area and make use of whatever resources are available to her.

‘The Shallows’ is a far more gripping watch than you might expect

In most shark movies nowadays, it feels as though the plot centers around a group of people who unfortunately find themselves stuck with hungry sharks. This year, Prime Video’s “The Devil’s Mouth” uses every trope in the handbook, “Deep Water” suffers from sharks that look uncannily animated, and Netflix’s own shark movie, “Thrash,” was completely lifeless. That’s why “The Shallows” stands out as one of the few films that makes the story feel more intimate, giving us a character with plenty of baggage while allowing her intelligence and skills to take center stage as she attempts to outwit a single shark.

If anything, the genre should take some notes from “The Shallows.” Its biggest strength is narrowing the story down to one protagonist, Nancy, giving us a glimpse into her family trauma and explaining why she’s decided to surf alone. This not only makes us sympathize with her but also gives us a reason to root for her when she ultimately comes face to face with the shark. Thanks to her medical training, there are also some smart scenes of Nancy using her necklace to stitch up a wound, and it’s pretty gnarly.

“The Shallows” is a more emotional shark movie, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less gripping. Even during the first act, when Nancy is out in the ocean, the camera frequently dips beneath the water’s surface, holding on the murky depths and leaving us wondering when the shark might appear. When that moment finally comes, it’s an intense scene, and from then on, the movie manages to sustain its tension throughout its 86-minute runtime. For a film that focuses on a single character, that’s pretty impressive.

Of course, “The Shallows” will never beat “Jaws” because, honestly, nothing will. It unfortunately has a pretty weak ending that might not leave you feeling completely satisfied. But if you enjoy a good shark movie that doesn’t follow every trope in the rulebook and instead focuses on one character fighting to survive, alongside a seagull she names Steven who becomes her unlikely companion along the way, then “The Shallows” should be on your Netflix watchlist. Let’s just say, it has more bite than most shark films.

As someone who missed a lot of Adam Sandler's seminal works, I didn't plan on watching "Don't Say Good Luck" this weekend. Then my colleague Rory Mellon said it was one of the best Netflix original movies he'd seen in ages, and now my interest is officially piqued. Sandler's real-life daughter Sunny stars as 16-year-old theater kid Sophie (Sunny Sandler), who's hoping to land a part in her in her high school’s upcoming production of the popular Broadway musical “Waitress.

Sophie's so locked in on getting the role that she's blindsided when her mom ("Yellowjackets'" Melanie Lynskey) discovers her cancer has returned. Her home life gets more and more chaotic as her dad (Max Greenfield) struggles to hold down the fort, and her two opinionated grandparents (Bebe Neuwirth and Steve Buscemi) aren't making things any easier. With an impressive ensemble cast and a heartfelt conceit, "Don’t Say Good Luck" has all the makings of a low-key, feel-good watch to lighten your weekend. .

'The Invite' (PVOD)

My friends won't shut up about "The Invite," Olivia Wilde's English-language remake of the Spanish comedy "The People Upstairs." And I don't blame them. Written by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, this flirty comedy stars Wilde and Seth Rogen as a married couple with precious little patience left for each other. A dinner party with their hot upstairs neighbors (Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton) spirals into unexpected but not entirely unwanted territory.

Cue the social and sexual awkwardness. "The Invite" is every bit as much fun as people say it is. It's a silly and subversive comedy that's surprisingly moving in the end. The ensemble has instant chemistry, the sharp script will have you cackling, and it's one of Olivia Wilde's best films yet.

'Camp Rock 3' (Disney+)

After 16 long years, "Camp Rock" (and the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato) return for a highly-anticipated threequel to Disney's millennial fever dream musical franchise. The biggest "Camp Rock" fan I know, my little sister, told me it doesn't hold a candle to the first two, but it's still a fun watch with plenty of catchy music.

When their opening act cancels last minute, Connect 3 hosts a competition at Camp Rock to find a new generations of talent for their upcoming tour. Liamani Segura, Malachi Barton, Hudson Stone and Lumi Pollack join the cast alongside the returning stars. Like a lot of unnecessary sequels, "Camp Rock 3" seems made in a lab to squeeze what nostalgia and magic is left out of a bygone franchise.

'Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear' (Hulu)

Travis Barker has been through a lot. Once a trash collector in Laguna Beach, he jettisoned to fame a drummer with the quintessential aughts rock band Blink-182, going on to star on the 2005 reality series "Meet the Barkers" and marry "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star Kourtney Kardashian. But despite spending decades in the spotlight, Barker’s new documentary offers a more intimate look at the personal battles he faced after surviving a near-fatal plane crash.

With appearances from collaborators, cultural icons, and those closest to him, "Louder Than Fear" explores Barker's answer to the question: If you were given a second chance at life, what would you do differently?

'Silo' season 3 (Apple TV)

Genre: Sci-fi dystopian drama series

What it's about: "Silo" is back, and season 3 is in full swing. This latest season starts with Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) alive but suffering from amnesia. She's also been made Mayor, which is a problem because ... well, the amnesia. Meanwhile, in the past, we're seeing the events that sent humanity underground into the silos decades ago.

Why you should watch it: The first two seasons of "Silo" have been great. So expectations are high. Thankfully, our Managing Streaming Editor, Kelly Woo, praised the show in her "Silo" season 3 premiere review, giving it a 4.5 out of five stars.

'Don't Say Good Luck' (Netflix)

Genre: Musical teen drama movie

What's it about? "Don't Say Good Luck" stars Sunny Sandler as Sophie. She's in high school, hoping to be an actress. But just as she scores the lead in the high school musical, her home life starts to unravel after the arrival of devastating news.

Why you need to watch it: Based on the trailer, it sure seems like Melanie Lynskey dies at the end of the movie, which is a bummer. But whether she does or not, this movie seems to be a critical hit for Netflix. It's currently 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is seriously impressive.

'Normal' (HBO Max)

Genre: Action crime thriller movie

What's it about? "Normal" stars Bob Odenkirk as Ulysses. He is settling in as the new sheriff of Normal, Minnesota, while dealing with his troubled past. Unfortunately for him, he quickly learns that the Yakuza are using the town as a bank for their ill-gotten gains, and the entire town is in on it.

Why you should watch it: "Normal" feels at times like better movies such as "Fargo" and "Seven Samurai." If you have HBO Max already, there are worse movies to watch. Especially since the premise is compelling. But aside from a few incredible kills, I'd rather watch "Nobody."

The series has a dedicated fanbase, and with its melodramatic love triangle heating up, season 3 hasn’t skipped a beat. Whether you’re returning to the Falls or starting from scratch, “My Life with Walter Boys” is a real guilty pleasure.

‘Let’s Marry Harry’

Speaking of guilty pleasure watches, Netflix’s increasingly vast slate of vapid reality TV shows has been expanded with “Let’s Marry Harry.” The Harry in question is Harry Jowsey, an Australian television personality and social media influencer (aren’t they all) who has appeared in reality favorites, “Too Hot to Handle,” “The Amazing Race,” Love Island,” and “Dancing with the Stars.” Now he’s got his very own TV show on Netflix.

Taking cues from shows like “The Bachelor,” Harry claims to be done with the dating game and now wants to settle down. So, 20 women compete for the opportunity to marry Harry. Offering advice are some of Harry’s closest friends, including his ex-girlfriend (I guess exes can stay friends) and television presenter Amanda Kloots. As per the genre traditions, this show is glossy and overedited, but reality obsessives will likely enjoy it.

‘The Bombing of Pan Am 103’

When a TV show is based on a true story, it adds to the intensity. Knowing that the events on screen really happened makes every moment hit harder. That’s the case for “The Bombing of Pan Am 103,” a British limited series that arrived on Netflix at the end of July after debuting on the BBC in the U.K. in the spring. This six-part show chronicles the deadliest terrorist attack in British history and the investigation that followed.

On 21 December 1988, Pan Am flight 103 was on course from London Heathrow to New York’s JFK airport. While flying over the town of Lockerbie, Scotland, a bomb in the hold detonated, resulting in 270 casualties, including the death of 11 local residents on the ground. The show follows the investigation by the British and U.S. governments to find those responsible for this horrific attack and stars Connor Swindells, Merritt Wever, Patrick J. Adams and Eddie Marsan.

Hulu is a great streaming service if you're looking for new shows to binge this weekend. It features a deep library of series from a range of Disney-owned networks, including FX, ABC and 20th Television. It also has tons of original hit shows that you don't want to miss. As per usual, this week, I've put together a list of three newly added shows perfect for adding to your weekend watchlist.

First up is "Furious," which has become a surprise hit from Hulu. Don't be surprised if it gets some Emmy buzz this time next year. Then, for fans of animated comedies, "Futurama" season 14 is in full swing, and the iconic series is still able to get a laugh. Finally, "The Shards" is a brand-new series from Ryan Murphy that is based on the life of American Psycho" author Bret Easton Ellis.

'Furious'

Genre: Crime drama series

What's it about? "Furious" stars Emmy Rossum as FBI agent Alice Black. She's a former homicide detective now working for the Feds, and she's on the hunt for a serial killer (Lola Petticrew). But she doesn't realize that her serial killer is really a sex trafficking survivor on a quest for vigilante justice.

Why you should watch it: This show has been a surprise hit for Hulu. It's currently an impressive 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences seem nearly as enthused. This might secretly be the show of the summer, and it's not too late to catch up.

'Futurama' season 14

Genre: Animated sci-fi sitcom series

What's it about? Set in the third millennium A.D., "Futurama" centers around a band of misfits. Theoretically, they run a delivery service, but they mostly get up to hijinks. This season, it seems like time travel is set to play a part, so hopefully we don't end up with multiversal madness.

Why you should watch it: "Futurama" is on the Mount Rushmore of American animated comedies. The most recent seasons may not be as good as the first several, but they're still guaranteed to earn a laugh.

'The Shards' season 1

Genre: Teen thriller series

What's it about? "The Shards" is based on the fictionalized memoir of show co-creator Bret Easton Ellis. Set at the prestigious Buckley Prep, it stars Igby Rigney as a young Ellis. His world gets turned upside down when a new student, Robert (Homer Gere), arrives at the same time a serial killer known as the Trawler becomes active.

Why you should watch it: Ryan Murphy is a prolific showrunner, and his FX shows all tend to have a combination of polish, style and darkness. "The Shards" seems to be cut from that same cloth, especially with "American Psycho" author Ellis on hand to turn up the dark, twisted drama. Just be warned that most people seem to either love it or hate it.

Paramount+ is regularly adding new shows to binge-watch. This weekend is no exception. The streaming service releases new episodes of hit shows every week. Sometimes, even entire seasons at once. It added over 80 new movies and shows on August 1 alone. It even has some live sporting events, including all major events from the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

This weekend, let's kick things off with some "Star Trek." Specifically, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 4, which just dropped its third episode of the season on Thursday. Then, it's time to catch up on "Lioness" season 3. Whether you're a fan of Taylor Sheridan or not, this spy thriller is still worth a watch. Finally, this Saturday night there's live UFC fighting once again. This time, it's a UFC Welterweight Championship bout between current titleholder Islam Makhachev and challenger Ian Machado Garry. UFC 330: Makhachev vs. Machado Garry kicks off at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday, so make sure your popcorn is ready in advance.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 4

Genre: Science fiction series

What's it about? "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike. He's the captain of the USS Enterprise and he's joined in this series by some familiar names. There's Spock (Ethan Peck), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn) and several others who have appeared in previous "Star Trek" movies and shows.

Why you should watch it: Season 4 covers the fourth year of the Enterprise's five-year mission. It's been a largely well-received show through its first three seasons. Season 4 is no exception and is currently rated an impressive 92% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

'Lioness' season 3

Genre: Spy thriller series

What's it about? "Lioness" stars Zoe Saldaña as Joe McNamara. She is a CIA operative who runs the Lioness program. This woman-led initiative inserts female operatives undercover in the war on terror. Once in, they take down enemy targets by getting close to the women around them and exploiting the target from there.

Why you should watch it: "Lioness" season 3 has Joe dealing with deadly operations and enemy combatants abroad, and betrayals close to home. Critics have been largely positive about it, but audiences seem to really love it. It's currently rated 91% fresh by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

UFC 330: Makhachev vs Machado Garry 

Genre: Live sporting event

What's it about? UFC 330 will see UFC Welterweight Champion (and former UFC Lightweight Champion) Islam Makhachev defend his title against challenger Ian Machado Garry. Each of them has lost just one fight in their professional careers, so someone is adding another tally to the loss column for just the second time. My money is on Makhachev taking this one, given his only loss was back in 2015. That's four years before Machado Garry's career even started.

Why you should watch it: Obviously, you can't binge a live sports event. But live sports such as UFC included in your subscription are a major perk for having Paramount+. Especially when it's a fight with a title belt on the line..

It’s been a long time since I could wholeheartedly recommend a new Netflix movie. “Voicemails for Isabelle” had strong cast chemistry but was overstuffed with genre tropes, “The Last House” had a promising first half and then collapsed on itself in a spectacularly misjudged third act, and “Ladies First”? Well, the less said about that utter trainwreck, the better.

This is to say that I went into “Don’t Say Good Luck,” the latest Netflix project from the House of Sandler, with, at best, modest expectations. It would be easy to accuse this new comedy drama of being a nepotism project. It stars Sunny Sandler, daughter of Adam Sandler, and comes just a few months after the older Sandler daughter, Sadie, got her own Netflix movie earlier this year, the fun but inherently forgettable “Roommates.”

Netflix is firmly in the Sandler family business, but it’s the youngest of the clan that has delivered the goods for the big red streaming service. “Good Say Good Luck” is a genuinely touching teen drama, and while it explores very familiar topics, a standing-ovation-worthy performance from Sunny Sandler elevates this crowd-pleaser above the pack. It’s a new Netflix movie that stands out in a sea of streaming originals not worthy of your watchlist.

What is ‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ about?

Sophie (Sunny Sandler) is a spirited 16-year-old hoping to land a supporting role in her high school’s upcoming production of the popular Broadway musical “Waitress.” Much to her shock, after an emotionally charged audition, she lands her dream role, the lead, Jenna.

As she prepares for opening night, her home life becomes more dramatic than any of the events depicted on stage when her mother (Melaine Lynskey) discovers her cancer has returned. As her father (Max Greenfield) attempts to balance looking after his ill wife and Sophie’s two younger brothers, the family home becomes increasingly chaotic.

Throw in two grandparents (Bebe Neuwirth and Steve Buscemi), high school crushes (and naturally some heartache), squabbles with best friends, and Sophie finds herself torn between wanting to give her all to the production and wanting to spend as much time with her mom as possible.

‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ is the best Netflix movie in months

There are a lot of familiar themes in “Don’t Say Good Luck.” It’s far from the first comedy-drama to tackle a teen struggling to grapple with a parent’s serious illness while also balancing all the usual high school drama. So, I can’t really award this Netflix movie many points for originality. But it treads this well-worn ground with grace, humor, and lots of heart.

Sunny Sandler is the movie’s fulcrum, and much of what works runs through her tender performance. You’ll probably enjoy this movie and her performance more if you appreciate musical theater (specifically “Waitress” itself), but even if you have no love for stagecraft, her torn emotional state will likely bring you to tears. Particularly in a touching finale that ends the movie on a bittersweet note. Sunny Sandler appears to have a bright future.

But the youngest daughter of Adam Sandler doesn’t have to carry the movie’s emotional load solo. Melanie Lynskey delivers a devastating supporting performance as a mother fighting a serious illness while trying not to lose herself in the battle. Max Greenfield is also strong as the family’s father, and Steven Buscemi pops up with a few chuckle-worthy lines.

The movie sings when it explores the family dynamic, which is thankfully always kept loving. There is no tacky melodrama involving parental divorce or anything so needless. Sophie's family is together through it all. It's at its best when Sophie is torn between her responsibilities to her castmates on stage and her desire to support and spend quality time with her mother.

It’s less successful when it briefly devolves into adolescent angst, like boy trouble. This subplot could have been axed with no overall loss. Perhaps it's included to contrast Sophie's home life, where the grim realities of a serious illness hang heavy in the air, with the more carefree nature of high school dating. But her crush isn't developed enough, and this particular side story veers too heavily into clichés, including a weak self-empowering speech.

“Don’t Say Good Luck” is a sweet little movie. It pulls at your heartstrings in all the right ways, and Sunny Sandler and Lynskey deliver memorable performances, forming a mother-daughter bond that is easy to invest in. While it doesn’t put the original in Netflix Original, it’s unquestionably one of the streaming service’s strongest efforts this year. And frankly, it’s a colossal setup from anything Adam Sandler has headlined for Netflix.

It's hot out there, and the couch is looking better than ever these days. Prime Video added a whopping 57 new movies so far in August, enough to make our good ol' friend decision paralysis rear its ugly head again. That's why I've already sifted through all the new releases to shine a spotlight on the best of the bunch. No one wants to waste all that time searching just to settle on a dud.

Slim pickings this week. "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" is one of the better sequels in the series, and it's got enough spectacle to keep your interest. Especially after it picks up in the second half. If you don't mind Christmas coming a little early this year, "Journey to Bethlehem" will scratch that musical itch.

Me? I'll be watching "Fargo," my second favorite Coen brothers movie. In case you were wondering, the first is "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" — still the best Odyssey adaptation imo. "Fargo" is always good for a laugh in my household, and I'm pretty sure all Midwesterners are required by law to watch it at least once.

'Journey to Bethlehem' (2023)

The vibe: A less horny "Jesus Christ Superstar"

It's a strange time of year to be recommending a Christmas musical, but we live in Unprecedented Times, I 'spose. I'm not exactly the target audience for "Journey to Bethlehem," but the grown-up theater kid in me yearns for musicals, and I must feed it something every few months lest I get stuck watching Gerard Butler play the Phantom of the Opera again.

"Journey to Bethlehem" seems like just the earworm-y cotton candy to stuff in its maw. It borrows from the biblical story of Jesus' birth, weaving in the struggles of Mary (Fiona Palomo) and her betrothed, Joseph (Milo Manheim) and other creative liberties, most notably the inclusion of pop songs and yuletide greatest hits.

'Fargo' (1996)

The vibe: Cozy ridiculousness to cool you off

If better movies had come out on Prime Video this week, I wouldn't have to put a 20-year-old Cohen brothers flick on this list. Yet here we are. "Fargo" is what happens when the world's most pathetic criminals collide. Unfortunately for them, it's in the crosshairs of Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand), a Midwest nice police chief who's entirely too pregnant for this foolishness when she gets caught up in one of the strangest cases in North Dakota history.

This being a Coen brothers film, you'll find plenty of quirky characters — not to mention the delightfully pitch-perfect Midwest accents of McDormand and William H. Macy’s Jerry Lundegaard, a schmuck in every sense of the word. His scheme to have his wife kidnapped to extort his father-in-law for money kicks off the whole string of unfortunate events. Steve Buscemi is slimy as ever as one of the two-bit criminals Jerry hires, and he meets a pretty grisly end (if ykyk).

'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' (2024)

The vibe: Another underbaked unnecessary sequel, but at least this one's kinda fun to watch

"Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" is the latest installment in the "Planet of the Apes" franchise. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where intelligent apes have risen to dominance, the movie is set several years after the events of "War for the Planet of the Apes." Apes have long established themselves as the dominant species, with what humans are left either enslaved or barely scraping by as scavengers in the wilderness.

The ruthless Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand) seeks to strengthen his reign, but one serious thorn in his side arrives after a young ape named Noa (Owen Teague) meets a human scavenger named Mae (Freya Allan). Their unlikely friendship threatens to throw a wrench in everything, and Proximus will stop at nothing to see his plans realized.

Summer is winding down, which means the back-to-school countdown is officially on. Which means there are limited opportunities to squeeze in some quality couch time. As Tom’s Guide’s streaming editor, I’ve ranked the biggest new movies and shows to watch this weekend.

There’s a little something for every streaming mood. The lineup runs the gamut from DC superheroes in "Lanterns" and the action thrills of "Reacher" to a dinner party gone (hilariously) wrong in "The Invite" and Shane Gillis's dysfunctional workplace comedy "Tires."

Here are my ranked picks for the best new movies and shows to watch this weekend.

1. ‘Lanterns’ (HBO)

Genre: Superhero drama series
Release date: Episode 1 on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 9 p.m. ET (about 1 hour)
What it’s about: Veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) are sent to investigate a murder in rural Nebraska. What looks like a straightforward homicide soon points to a much larger extraterrestrial conspiracy.
Why it’s worth your time: "Lanterns" is taking DC's Green Lantern mythology and mashing it up with a moody mystery in the vein of "True Detective." Chandler and Pierre’s prickly mentor-young gun dynamic looks to crackle, while Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) and Nathan Fillion’s gloriously bowl-cut Guy Gardner add some welcome comic-book chaos.

2. ‘Reacher’ season 4 (Prime Video)

Genre: Action thriller series
Available now: Episodes 1-3 (about 45–55 minutes each)
What it's about: Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is back in New York, where a disturbing subway encounter sends him down a rabbit hole involving politicians, extremists and old wars. Season 4 adapts Lee Child’s "Gone Tomorrow," with Reacher punching his way through the investigation.
Why it's worth your time: This season promises to pick up the pace. Ritchson has teased an even more “high-octane” outing, so expect bigger conspiracies, nastier fights and plenty of the hulking hero's sardonic humor.

3. 'The Invite' (digital)

Genre: Comedy-drama movie
Runtime: 1 hour 44 minutes
What it's about: Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela (Olivia Wilde)’s marriage is already strained when they invite their anything-goes upstairs neighbors, Piña (Penélope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton), over for dinner. One soufflé, many glasses of wine and a whole lot of oversharing later, the evening spirals into a hilarious relationship pressure cooker.
Why it's worth your time: Think “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” but much hornier. The actors make a terrific quartet, while a sharp script from co-writers Wilde and Will McCormack and Wilde’s precise direction turns marital resentment and sexual awkwardness into a surprisingly moving comedy.

4. ‘My Brilliant Career’ (Netflix)

Genre: Period romantic drama series

What it's about: Sybylla Melvyn (Philippa Northeast) has one ambition: to become a writer. Unfortunately, she's a young woman in 1900 Australia, where her family just wants her to marry a rich man. When she's sent away from home, Sybylla finds herself juggling her literary ambitions with love.
Why it's worth your time: It's giving "Little Women" — a fiercely independent heroine determined to become a writer in a time when a woman's only job prospect is "wife." Add a swoony love interest and a gorgeous period setting and you have a pretty irresistible binge.

5. ‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ (Netflix)

Genre: Musical teen drama movie
Runtime: 1 hour 45 min
What it's about: Sophie Birenbaum (Sunny Sandler) is a theater kid who finally lands the lead in her high school musical, only to discover that the real drama is happening at home. When her mom Elizabeth (Melanie Lynskey) learns her cancer has returned, Sophie has to juggle opening-night pressure and the need to grow up quickly.
Why it's worth your time: Yes, this is another Netflix project starring an Adam Sandler kid, so your nepo-baby alarms are allowed to beep. But Sunny Sandler has chops, both in acting and singing. The family melodrama is tender and not too treacly, with Lynskey bringing her usual warmth as Sophie’s mom.

6. ‘Tires’ season 3 (Netflix)

Genre: Workplace comedy series
Available now: All 12 episodes (about 30 min each)
What it's about:
Shane (Shane Gillis) and Will (Steve Gerben) are now co-owners of the struggling Valley Forge Automotive. As the shop starts to fall apart, so does their friendship, forcing the cousins to reckon with their past.
Why it's worth your time:
This is a workplace comedy for anyone whose idea of team building is watching coworkers make each other miserable. Gillis and Gerben’s bickering remains the main draw.

7. ‘Women in Blue’ season 2 (Apple TV)

Genre: Crime thriller drama
Available now: Episode 1 (56 min)
What it’s about: María (Bárbara Mori) has traded up to lieutenant, but her new rank comes with an old problem: institutional corruption. When a student activist is found dead, María and fellow female cops Valentina (Natalia Téllez), Gabina (Amorita Rasgado), and Ángeles (Ximena Sariñana) stumble into a case connected to Mexico’s 1968 student massacre.
Why it’s worth your time: Season 1 established the Azules as women fighting to be taken seriously in a deeply sexist police force; season 2 gives them an even bigger mess to untangle in a historical conspiracy.

We’re basically in the middle of August, and while many people see this as the last month of summer and the final few weeks to enjoy the sunshine, I very much see it as a countdown to the colder months ahead. “Don’t Say Good Luck” is a coming-of-age musical dramedy that could easily grab the No. 1 spot on Netflix over the next few days. Produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions and starring his daughter, Sunny Sandler, the movie marks a noticeable shift for the studio, moving away from its traditional comedies and into more emotionally driven territory. Plus, it already boasts an impressive 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, so I don’t think you’ll need much convincing to give it a watch.

Sophie Birenbaum (Sunny Sandler) is a high school theatre student who lands the lead role in her school’s production of Waitress. Just as she prepares for her biggest performance yet, Sophie discovers that her mother’s (Melanie Lynskey) cancer has returned, throwing her home life into turmoil. As she juggles several rehearsals away from home, friendships, romance and the pressures of being a teenager, Sophie tries to keep everything together while supporting her family.

‘Immaculate’ (2024)

Getting closer to fall means now’s the perfect time to stream a good horror movie. Luckily, Netflix has you covered with one of Sydney Sweeney’s more overlooked films, “Immaculate.” Released around the same time as the eerily similar “The First Omen” back in 2024, Sweeney’s psychological horror stands out thanks to her intense performance alone, and I’m convinced she needs to do more in this genre. Expect to be a little spooked after watching it, because it’ll certainly get you in the mood for Halloween.

Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney) is a young American woman who travels to the Italian countryside to join a remote convent after surviving a near-death experience as a child. Welcomed by the resident nuns and priests, Cecilia settles into her new surroundings and prepares to take her final vows. However, shortly after becoming a nun, strange events begin to unfold around her, leaving Cecilia increasingly unsettled. As the convent celebrates what it considers a miracle, she begins experiencing strange nightmares and strange physical symptoms.

‘The Shallows’ (2016)

2026 seems to be the year of shark movies, but not necessarily the year of good ones. This type of survival thriller is getting pretty oversaturated at this point, with many relying on the same storylines and tropes, which is why I appreciate “The Shallows” for doing things a little differently. I’d rank it among the best shark movies out there. Starring Blake Lively in the lead role, this thriller is an intense watch from start to finish, and makes the smart choice of following one character as she faces one of the ocean’s deadliest predators.

Nancy (Blake Lively) is a medical student who travels to a secluded beach in Mexico to surf alone. While out in the water, she is attacked by a great white shark and manages to escape to a small rock just 200 yards from shore. However, the shark continues circling the area, leaving Nancy injured and unable to safely return to the beach. With the tide rising and her injuries worsening, she must figure out a way to get back to land while avoiding the shark, and so she begins planning her escape.

"Point Break" is being re-released in theaters for its 35th anniversary starting August 16. You need to go see it.

Now, let me elaborate a little: You really need to go see it. This movie may not be the best movie of the 1990s (after all, "Goodfellas" exists), but it's up there. And it's genuinely my favorite '90s movie. It's Keanu Reeves' best performance outside of "John Wick." It's Patrick Swayze's best performance, period. And it's personally my pick for Kathryn Bigelow's best film, even if she ultimately won an Oscar for "The Hurt Locker" nearly two decades after this 1991 action movie.

But the reach of this movie extends a bit beyond that. It was executive produced by a little-known director (and Bigelow's husband at the time) named James Cameron. He even claims he wrote the script — something that the movie's writer, W. Peter Iliff, doesn't fully dispute.

It's been given a nod to in several other films. Just this year, Russell Crowe's action crime thriller, "The Get Out," pays homage to it. If you've ever seen a gang of people wearing U.S. President masks, that's a reference to this movie. It spawned one of the greatest spiritual remakes ever, 2001's "The Fast and the Furious." Admittedly, it also spawned an actual remake, but we in the filmgoing community have collectively repressed that said remake ever existed. It's that bad.

In short, "Point Break is a seminal '90s movie. It features some of Hollywood's best at peak performance. Its influence in films is still felt today. So watching it in general is a no-brainer. If you can, you should go see it in theaters now that it's been restored in 4K. But if you can't, there is a way to stream it at home for free.

What is 'Point Break' about?

Set in 1980s Los Angeles, "Point Break" stars Keanu Reeves as Johnny Utah. He's a former Ohio State quarterback (not to be confused with Shane Falco, the former Buckeye QB whom Reeves portrayed in "The Replacements") turned FBI rookie, and he's tasked with investigating a rash of bank robberies by the "Ex-Presidents."

These criminals get their names from the rubber masks they wear, portraying former U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, and Lyndon B. Johnson. They only rob tellers, not vaults, and try to avoid bloodshed. The senior FBI agent who's partnered with Johnny, Pappas (Gary Busey), thinks that the thieves are surfers and he wants Johnny to infiltrate the group.

Now, if that sounds a lot like "The Fast and the Furious," that's because it does. So you can already guess what happens next. Johnny infiltrates the group of surfers, led by the charismatic Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), and concludes they're the Ex-Presidents. But he grows close to them along the way and falls for Bodhi's ex-girlfriend, Tyler (Lori Petty). So when the time comes to bring them down, things get complicated.

At this point, you know why "Point Break" is a movie worth seeing. You know what it's about. What you don't know is why it's a must-see now that it's been restored in 4K and is showing again in theaters.

I've gone and seen a few of these re-releases in the past. I went and saw Akira Kurosawa's "Ran" last year for its 40th anniversary, and it was incredible. It's a movie I had seen plenty before, but seeing it for the first time on the big screen was a revelation.

I also went and saw the re-releases of "Top Gun" and "Top Gun: Maverick" earlier this year for the former's 40th anniversary. Like with "Ran," seeing "Top Gun" on the big screen for the first time was incredible. But even getting to see "Top Gun: Maverick" in theaters again was worth the price of admission.

If you're not sold on "Point Break" yet, though, or you don't have time to go out to the movies, there is an alternative. The original version (non-4K resolution) of "Point Break" is streaming for free on Pluto TV, Tubi, and more of the best free streaming services. So go ahead, stream it now for free, and then go see it in theaters while it's at select locations from August 16-19.

‘Katla’

Created by Baltasar Kormákur and Sigurjón Kjartansson, this Icelandic mystery-drama finds its thrills in both the natural and supernatural worlds: A year after a catastrophic volcanic eruption shakes up the small, southernmost village of Vik, former townsfolk thought to be lost in the natural disaster start reappearing in the village, caked in ash but otherwise unharmed. More and more residents, all previously presumed to be dead, begin mysteriously emerging from the glacial ice, bringing up questions of lingering grief and long-running folklore for the residents who were left behind.

Starring Guðrún Ýr Eyfjörð, Íris Tanja Flygenring and Ingvar Sigurðsson, the eight-episode thriller is a haunting slow-burn watch, one that earned a coveted 100% critical approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. For New Scientist, Robyn Chowdhury praised Katla as "a thriller with such depth that some episodes, particularly the fast-paced season finale, can leave you feeling genuinely emotionally raw. It is a story about grief with unpredictably dark twists and turns, worthy of multiple watches."

'Bodkin'

If you want your thriller miniseries with some "Only Murders in the Building"-style comedy, you should seek out "Bodkin," which, funnily enough, also centers on a ragtag trio investigating a cold-case mystery to make a true-crime podcast. This time, those wannabe detectives are American podcaster Gilbert Power (Will Forte), his British assistant Emmy Sizergh (Robyn Cara) and Irish reporter Dove Maloney (Siobhán Cullen), who set out to uncover the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in a remote coastal town in Ireland.

Created by British writer Jez Scharf, the seven-part series doesn't just play into our collective obsession with all things true crime but also satirizes that very genre; "'Bodkin's' satire of true crime investigation could use a more compelling mystery to hang its quips on, but the series' sheer eccentricity makes for an intriguing enough tale from the old sod," reads the critical consensus over on Rotten Tomatoes.

'Cassandra'

From "Ex Machina" to "Transcendence" to this year's "Mercy," artificial intelligence has proven a fruitful subject for sci-fi thrillers, and this futuristic German miniseries is no exception. It centers on the Prill family — mom Samira (Mina Tander), dad David (Michael Klammer), and their children Fynn (Joshua Kantara) and Juno (Mary Tölle) — who move into a long-empty 1970s smart house that's equipped with an AI operating system named Cassandra (voiced by Lavinia Wilson) and screens in every room.

Determined never to be abandoned again, however, the virtual assistant soon turns rogue and ruthless, manipulating the Prills against each other and fundamentally holding them hostage in their own home. You'll never look at your Alexa the same way again.

"Everybody Lies" is a gritty crime drama set in Paris, as a dogged ex-detective joins a new team and makes waves amid a string of high-profile cases.

Top shows and movies to stream tonight

MLB Field of Dreams: Phillies vs. Twins (Netflix)

Genre: Live sporting event

What it's about: For the first time in four years, baseball is returning to the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa, built on the site of the stadium from the iconic Kevin Costner movie of the same name. Tonight, this patch of former cornfield will host the Philadelphia Phillies as they take on (and hopefully pummel) the Minnesota Twins. Given that we've lost five of our last eight, though, that's not a guarantee.

Why you should watch it: If you build it, they will stream. At least, that's what Netflix is hoping. It's their first time hosting this live Major League Baseball event. But Netflix is now fairly experienced at broadcasting live sports, so hopefully it'll be all Schwarbombs and no buffering.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 4 (Paramount+)

Genre: Science fiction series

What's it about? "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, a familiar name for "Star Trek" fans. He's, of course, the captain of the USS Enterprise. He's also joined in this series by some more familiar names. There's Spock (Ethan Peck), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn) and several others who have appeared in previous "Star Trek" movies and shows.

Why you should watch it: Season 4 covers the fourth year of the Enterprise's five-year mission. It's been well-received and is currently rated an impressive 92% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Don't skip over this latest "Trek" series.

'The Shards' season 1 (Hulu)

Genre: Teen thriller series

What's it about? "The Shards" is adapted from the fictionalized memoir of show co-creator Bret Easton Ellis. Set at Buckley Prep, it stars Igby Rigney as a younger version of the "American Psycho" author. What feels like a good life gets shattered when a new student, Robert (Homer Gere), arrives at the same time a serial killer known as the Trawler becomes active.

Why you should watch it: Ryan Murphy is a prolific showrunner, and his FX shows all tend to have a combination of polish, style and darkness. "The Shards" seems to be cut from that same cloth, especially with Ellis on hand to turn up the dark, twisted drama. Just be warned that most people seem to either love it or hate it.

Hulu is an excellent choice for building your next weekend movie marathon. The streaming service regularly adds both originals and classics to its library. Plus, because it's owned by Disney, it's the home for new releases from several Disney-owned studios. It even has deals with some other studios to get new releases before any other service, whether they're produced by Disney or not.

This weekend, I'm only picking movies that came out in the past 12 months. Some of these have never even been on a streaming service before, like "Busboys," the latest comedy from David Spade. "The Wizard of the Kremlin" is also getting its streaming debut this weekend, and stars Paul Dano as an influential government official in the early days of the Vladimir Putin administration. Finally, I've saved the best for last (at least, according to the critics). "Violent Ends" is a seriously gritty thriller, and you won't want to miss it now that it's on Hulu.

'Busboys' (2026)

Genre: Comedy

What's it about? Markie and "Steef" are not the smartest. In fact, they're idiots. So they decide to become busboys at a restaurant, thinking one day they'll become waiters, which will solve all their problems. Which, anyone who has ever worked in food service will tell you, is something only an idiot would think.

Why you should watch it: I'm not sure "Busboys" is any good. The trailer didn't exactly sell me. But it has some actors I like, including Chris Elliott, Bobby Lee and Jay Pharoah. Audiences seem to like it well enough, as well. It's currently rated 65% by them on Rotten Tomatoes.

'The Wizard of the Kremlin' (2026)

Genre: Political satire

What's it about? "The Wizard of the Kremlin" centers around Vadim Baranov (Paul Dano), a fictional character based on the very real Vladislav Surkov. He starts as a young artist in 1990s Russia but then transforms into an influential government official and spin doctor in the early days of Vladimir Putin's (Jude Law) government.

Why you need to watch it: Critics and audiences are equally tepid in their responses to this movie. But with a cast that includes Dano, Law, Alicia Vikander, Tom Sturridge and Jeffrey Wright, I'm willing to give it a shot. There's so much talent on the call sheet that I'm hopeful to at least not have a bad time, even if I'm not blown away.

'Violent Ends' (2025)

Genre: Gothic crime thriller

What's it about? "Violent Ends" stars Billy Magnussen as Lucas. Unlike the rest of his criminal family, Lucas tries to be an honest man. But an armed robbery gone wrong draws him into the family business, and that business is good ol' fashioned small-town violence.

Why you need to watch it: As someone from a small town that could easily be mistaken for the Northwestern Arkansas filming location of "Violent Ends," I'm a sucker for these types of crime thrillers. It's the same reason I love the show "Justified" so much. I know these types of people, so it's very easy to connect with. But it seems others have connected with the movie too. It's currently 68% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Paramount+ is a great streaming service if you're building a weekend movie marathon. It adds dozens of movies to the platform each month. It just added over 80 new movies and shows on August 1. Many of these are beloved classics or more modern hits. A few times a month, you also get brand-new movies from Paramount Skydance Studios.

This week, I'm taking things back to the 2000s. Kicking things off is "A.I: Artificial Intelligence," one of Steven Spielberg's several beloved science fiction films. Once you've finished that, let's keep things sci-fi adjacent with the found footage monster movie, "Cloverfield." That flick might leave you on edge, though. So once the credits roll, end your movie marathon with "The Hangover" and a laugh.

'A.I. Artificial Intelligence' (2001)

Genre: Science fiction

What's it about? This movie is set in a futuristic society and centers around David (Haley Joel Osment). He's an artificial child programmed with the ability to love. Intended as a surrogate son for Monica (Frances O'Connor) and Henry (Sam Robards), things get complicated once their real son (Jake Thomas) is unexpectedly cured of a possibly terminal disease.

Why you need to watch it: "Disclosure Day" has come and gone. So if you're looking for another Steven Spielberg sci-fi movie, check out "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence." It holds a unique place in Spielberg's canon; it was originally intended to be a Stanley Kubrick film until the iconic director handed it off to Spielberg in 1995.

'Cloverfield' (2008)

Genre: Found footage monster horror

What's it about? "Cloverfield" takes place on May 22, 2008. On that fateful day, a monster, later dubbed "LSA" (Large-Scale Aggressor) by the U.S. Department of Defense, attacked New York City. Using video found on a personal camcorder, this found-footage film recreates the night of the attack and centers itself around six friends as they attempt to flee the city.

Why you should watch it: "Cloverfield" is in the conversation for the best found-footage movie ever. It's a relic of its time, but the tension this movie creates and then executes on is brilliantly crafted. I'd probably still give the crown to "The Blair Witch Project," but this 2008 film has a serious case to make.

'The Hangover' (2009)

Genre: Comedy

What's it about? "The Hangover" stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis as Phil, Stu and Alan. They've taken their friend, Doug (Justin Bartha), to Las Vegas for his bachelor party. There's just one problem: they wake up the next day with no Doug and no memory of the previous night, and the wedding is set for later that day.

Why you should watch it: I think I saw this movie five times in theaters the year it came out, which was the summer before I went to college. I don't know that I've seen it since. It's time to rectify that this weekend.

It’s shaping up to be a great week for Netflix subscribers in the mood to watch some thriller movies. I’ve combed through the most recent additions to the streaming service, and also the new arrivals over the coming days, and picked out a trio of thrillers for your watchlist.

This week, my picks range from a new Netflix original movie that has been sitting pretty in the No. 1 spot for nearly a full week. But if the admittedly subpar reception puts you off, then there’s a couple of older, but still excellent, picks, including a dark mystery thriller from director David Fincher, the filmmaker behind “Fight Club, “Gone Girl” and “Seven.”

These are the new to Netflix thriller movies to consider watching this week, add th. Add your watchlist if you like movies full of adrenaline-raising moments, and maybe a twist or two.

‘The Last House’ (2026)

Netflix’s new sci-fi thriller “The Last House” has held the No. 1 spot since its debut last week. I was pretty mixed on the movie overall. In my review, I praised the opening hour, but felt the Netflix original falls apart in its second half.

While viewers are watching in large numbers, the response hasn’t been too positive. The movie has a poor 28% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, so be sure to keep your expectations in check if you decide to give it a shot this week.

Starring Oscar-nominee Wagner Moura and Greta Lee, “The Last House” focuses on a family of four who are suddenly trapped in their house by a mysterious rainfall that seals all the doors and windows. They can’t get out, and nothing can get in. As the days stretch to weeks, and then months, they are forced to take extreme action to survive, while also trying to uncover who (or what) is keeping them trapped inside their home.

‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ (2011)

2011’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is a bit of a unicorn. It’s a rare Hollywood remake of a foreign-language movie that actually surpasses the original, and in this writer’s eyes, is the definitive adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novel.

Maybe that was to be expected, after all, when you bring filmmaker extraordinaire David Fincher on board, the result is predictably high-quality. This neo-noir mystery thriller is absolutely gripping and spins a compelling tale of murder and dark family secrets in the snowy Swedish countryside.

Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) is a disgraced journalist who gets an unexpected shot at restoring his reputation when he’s hired by a wealthy industrialist, Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer), to investigate the disappearance of his grandniece, who went missing without a trace 40 years earlier.

Vanger is convinced his niece was killed by a member of his own family and wants answers. Blomkvist hires a troubled hacker, Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), to assist, and as the duo investigates the disappearance, they uncover truths far darker than ever expected.

‘The Shallows’ (2016)

It’s been a big year for shark movies, with flicks such as “Thrash,” “Deep Water,” and “The Devil’s Mouth” all swimming to streaming platforms in 2026. Frankly, none of these have been what I’d label quality watches, so if you’re on the hunt for a shark movie that is actually worth your time, step into “The Shallows.”

This survival thriller might be a decade old, but it still packs plenty of nerve-shredding moments and brings some emotional weight to the table with a lead character struggling with past trauma. This adds an extra wrinkle to an already intense thriller.

Nancy Adams (Blake Lively) is a med student, reeling from the recent death of her mother. Taking a trip to a secluded beach in Mexico, a sunny day of surfing becomes a battle for survival when Nancy becomes trapped just a couple hundred yards from the shore. Stranded on an isolated rock with a great white shark circling, she can see dry land, but actually reaching safety will require a whole lot of bravery and quick thinking.

If there’s one thing James Gunn and Peter Safran have made clear about the new DC Universe, it’s that they don’t want to simply repeat what came before. The pair are building a connected DCU where movies and TV shows can feed into one another, while still giving each project its own tone and identity. And with “Superman” kicking things off, we’re starting to get a better idea of what this new universe could look like.

One of the most interesting projects on the horizon is “Lanterns.” The HBO series follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they investigate a mysterious murder in Nebraska. On paper, it sounds more like a gritty detective thriller than a traditional superhero show, but that might be exactly why I’m so intrigued. The mystery is expected to connect to the wider DCU, meaning there could be much more going on beneath the surface.

And, naturally, fans have already started digging for clues. I’ve found five insane theories about “Lanterns” that could completely change how we see the new DCU (and some of them are wild).

Top 5 theories

1. The Heartland murder that could introduce ‘The Centre’

The first popular theory suggests that the Nebraska murder mystery in “Lanterns” could introduce The Centre, a powerful entity from the DC: The New Frontier comics. James Gunn has said that while the show is a grounded detective story, the mystery Jordan and Stewart uncover will connect to the wider DC Universe.

In the comics, The Centre is an ancient being hidden within Earth that sees humanity as a threat and can influence people’s minds. The theory suggests that the aliens being murdered in Nebraska could be connected to a cult under The Centre’s influence.

If true, this would mean Jordan and Stewart aren’t investigating a simple alien-related murder case. Instead, they could accidentally uncover an ancient threat that has been hiding on Earth for centuries. The theory could also explain how “Lanterns” connects to the wider DCU, potentially setting up a much bigger threat that eventually brings Earth’s superheroes together.

2. Hal Jordan could lose his mind and pass the mantle to John Stewart

Fans have been speculating about Hal Jordan’s future because “Lanterns” pairs an older, tired Hal Jordan with a younger John Stewart. This has led to theories that Hal could suffer a major psychological breakdown or even die, leaving John to take over as Earth’s main Green Lantern.

The show’s creators have said that generational change is an important theme, exploring when an experienced hero should step aside and let someone younger take over. This also fits Hal’s comic-book history, particularly Emerald Twilight, where trauma and fear eventually lead to him being corrupted by Parallax.

So basically, “Lanterns” could put its own spin on this storyline. After years of fighting across the galaxy, Hal may be exhausted and increasingly disillusioned with the Green Lantern Corps. As he and John investigate the Nebraska mystery, Hal could become vulnerable to fear and manipulation.

Whether Hal is corrupted by Parallax or sacrifices himself to save John, the result could be the same: John Stewart becomes Earth’s main Green Lantern and takes over the mantle from Hal.

3. William Macon could be Black Hand

Garret Dillahunt’s character, William Macon, could secretly be an adaptation of William Hand, aka Black Hand, one of Green Lantern’s biggest villains.

Macon is described as a conspiracy-obsessed cowboy with a dark side, which has led to speculation that his character is hiding a connection to the comics. William Hand is obsessed with death and eventually becomes the villainous Black Hand, who plays a major role in the Blackest Night storyline.

The theory essentially implies that “Lanterns” could give Black Hand a more grounded origin. Macon might discover alien technology or strange remains in Nebraska, leading him down a darker path. This could actually allow “Lanterns” to quietly introduce Black Hand and set up a future Blackest Night storyline without making the show too cosmic too quickly.

4. The Manhunters could be behind the murders

One interesting theory is that the Manhunters, the robotic police force created by the Guardians of the Universe before the Green Lantern Corps, could be responsible for the alien murders in Nebraska.

In the comics, the Manhunters were abandoned after they became too dangerous and massacred an entire sector. However, the theory says that some rogue Manhunters could have survived and secretly continued operating on Earth.

This could also explain Sinestro’s role in the show. As a former Green Lantern who knows the Guardians’ secrets, he could help Jordan and Stewart uncover a much bigger conspiracy. It’s possible “Lanterns” could reveal that the Guardians aren’t as trustworthy as they seem, forcing Hal and John to question who they should really be protecting: the Guardians or Earth.

5. The government is hiding Martian Manhunter

This last theory is suggesting that J’onn J’onzz, aka Martian Manhunter, has been secretly held by the U.S. government for decades. He could’ve arrived on Earth years ago but was captured and locked away in a secret facility. The aliens being murdered in Nebraska could be part of a team that came to Earth looking for him or trying to rescue him.

While investigating the murders, John Stewart might discover strange clues pointing to the facility and eventually find J’onn being held there.

This would give the show a very different introduction to Martian Manhunter, presenting him as a prisoner in need of help rather than an established superhero. It could also give John a strong connection to J’onn, potentially setting them up as important members of the future Justice League.

How these theories could change the future of the DCU

While “Lanterns” is being billed as a grounded murder mystery, the series is expected to connect to the wider DCU, with John Stewart already confirmed to return in “Man of Tomorrow.” If even one of these theories turns out to be true, the show could be much more important to the DCU than it first appears.

In fact, this franchise may be taking a slower approach to big crossovers. Instead of jumping straight into huge alien invasions, it could introduce bigger threats through smaller stories like this one. This would allow major storylines to build naturally across different movies and shows.

There could also be a bigger focus on legacy and passing the torch. If Hal Jordan’s story ends with John Stewart taking over, it would show that heroes can genuinely move on rather than staying in the same roles forever. And if the show really does mix crime drama, Western and cosmic horror, it could also set the tone for a DCU that isn’t afraid to experiment with different genres.

There’s a strange phenomenon in Hollywood known as “twin films.” Essentially, two movies with similar core premises are released close together. This overshadowed horror movie has just arrived on Netflix, and if you skipped it on the big screen to watch the latest “Omen” movie instead, now is your chance to correct that mistake. Yes, the competition might not be the fiercest around, but I rank it easily as among Sydney Sweeney’s best movies (second only to last year’s delightful twisting “The Housemaid”). What is ‘Immaculate’ about?

While you can probably puzzle out “Immaculate’s” twist from the trailer (and the movie’s winking title), I’ll tread lightly here to avoid direct spoilers.

Sydney Sweeney plays Sister Cecilia, an American girl who turned to religion after surviving a near-death experience as a child. Moving to a remote convent in the stunning Italian countryside, she is devout in her faith and is preparing to take her vows to become a full-fledged nun.

Initially warmly welcomed to the convent and settling into her new life, things take a dark turn when Cecilia begins to experience intense nightmares and suspects the religious institution is harboring dark secrets. This suspicion proves to be correct when unspeakable horrors emerge...

‘Immaculate’ is worthy of your Netflix watchlist this week

“Immaculate’s” biggest strength is its constantly spiralling tension. It takes a little while to get going, with a scene-setting first act, and then once the mid-movie twist rears its head, from there, it’s just a straight descent into horrifically entertaining chaos. It keeps pushing forward, building to a particularly shocking ending that (unsurprisingly) has proved divisive.

The movie’s tight 89-minute runtime helps the momentum. Once “Immaculate” gets going, it doesn’t waste time. Instead, it’s a whistle-stop tour of nerve-jangling horror highlights, from effective jump scares to very ominous utterances from supporting characters. The bloody violence mixed with the religious theming will put some viewers off. However, if you can handle this, then “Immaculate” is a very entertaining dark horror movie.

Credit to Sydney Sweeney because this movie rests on her shoulders. The movie doesn’t spend much time fleshing out the wider cast; it’s focused on Cecilia. Her arc is compelling. At first convinced she survived her near-death experience because God has a purpose for her, she becomes dismayed at what the covenant leaders have in store. In the movie’s third act, Sweeney channels Cecilia’s internal rage that has been bubbling across the entire runtime, creating a final cathartic moment that you won’t soon forget.

“Immaculate” is a horror movie that is more spooky than outright terrifying, and its plot does become a little nonsensical (and highly illogical) towards the end. Nevertheless, it’s got some strong central themes that echo topical events at the time of its release, which add an extra layer to unravel. It’s a movie that I’d recommend to any dedicated fan of the horror genre.

Given that quick commercial success and the critical acclaim of the new series (the show debuted with a strong 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising for offering "plenty of early aughts nostalgia that rises above its class, setting sail with audiences' expectations and delighting all who seek to take their hearts on a solid adventure"), it's understandable that fans are already wondering if we'll be returning to the island anytime soon. Here's everything we know about "Sterling Point" season 2 so far.

Will there be a 'Sterling Point' season 2 on Prime Video?

As of press time, Prime Video has not yet announced a second season for "Sterling Point." However, a renewal is likely, given the popularity of the series thus far and the recent season 2 pick-ups of the drama's YA contemporaries "Off Campus" and "Every Year After.

Who will be in the 'Sterling Point' season 2 cast?

Again, "Sterling Point" season 2 isn't officially a go on Prime Video. However, if the series does get picked up for a sophomore season, we'd expect to see main cast members including:

What would 'Sterling Point' season 2 be about?

Despite the proliferation of page-to-screen adaptations on Prime Video, "Sterling Point" is one of the rare Amazon titles that didn't come from a book source, meaning that season 2 will see creator Megan Park and the show's writers starting fresh with new storylines. And Park reportedly already has a few ideas in the works, though the team is still waiting on a season two renewal.

“Season 1, you do spend a lot of time setting up the world, and then I do almost feel like if you get a season 2, it’s when you relax and go deeper,” Park recently told Entertainment Weekly. “[Ramona and Annie] switch lives, so there’s a lot for a second season to come back to. And then there’s also the whole thing about when Ramona turns 18, what’s gonna happen with the property?”

And it won't just be drama for the young'uns. “I would love to spend more time with the parents,” Park continued. “Specifically, who’s Oona’s mom? It would be so interesting to bring that character in.”

She added: “There’s a lot of mommy and daddy issues being threaded throughout the show. There’s a lot there.”

When could 'Sterling Point' season 2 be released?

We're still waiting to hear if "Sterling Point" will be returning for a second season, so timelines on both production windows and premiere dates are very much up in the air.

However, let's use another recent Prime Video release as a model. "Every Year After" began filming in Vancouver on June 4, 2025, and debuted on the streamer almost exactly a year later on June 10, 2026. We can expect to see "Sterling Point" season 2 take about 12 months from the start of filming until the premiere.

'Reacher' season 4 premiere (Prime Video)

Genre: Crime thriller series

What's it about? After Reacher witnesses a woman (Karen Kwong-Chip) die on a Philadelphia subway, he's hounded by police and the CIA. They all think the woman gave him a flash drive before she killed herself. Now, he, a Philadelphia cop (Tamara Green) and the woman's brother (Christopher Rodriguez Marquette) have to uncover the real reason everyone is after them, and why the woman took her own life.

Why you need to watch it: I reviewed the "Reacher" season 4 premiere for Tom's Guide, and I loved it. The show sticks to what made the past three seasons a success, and Alan Ritchson has never been more perfectly cast as the titular Jack Reacher.

'Ted Lasso' season 4 (Apple TV)

Genre: Sports comedy-drama series

What it's about: Coach Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) made a name for himself as a college football coach. But he stole hearts and minds as the misfit coach of Premier League club AFC Richmond. Now, he's back, but he's coaching the club's women's team.

Why you should watch it: I wasn't sure we needed a season 4 of "Ted Lasso." And I wasn't the only one. But it's won over most viewers according to Rotten Tomatoes, and it won us over in our "Ted Lasso" season 4 review.

'The Challenge: Cutthroat' season 42 (Paramount+)

Genre: Reality competition series

What's it about? "The Challenge: Cutthroat" brings back a classic format to the reality series, which is moving from MTV to Paramount+. 24 veterans and rookies are dropping into Thailand and are split into three teams. To win $500,000, the whole team has to cross the finish line. But each team's captain decides how the money is divided, and nothing stops them from keeping it all.

Why you should watch it: "The Challenge" is a reality show mainstay. It's arguably closer to a live sporting event than a reality show at this point, and as the competitors get more athletic, the line between this show and "Survivor" begins to blur. However, CBS's flagship competition show cannot match "The Challenge" for hookups and messy drama. I'll be watching this season like I do every other: eagerly.

With how expensive streaming's getting, I'm making the most out of the best free streaming services to fill my watchlist these days. Pluto TV added a whopping 245 movies in August, including 14 movies from the Academy Award-winning indie film studio A24. A24's become synonymous with a certain type of arthouse flick: emotional, provocative, and undeniably memorable. The kind of weird movies I force my friends to watch, only to gloat when they end up loving them.

Not every A24 movie is created equal, however. I can only stand behind some of their movies with my full chest. With that in mind, I've separated the wheat from the chaff and rounded up the best A24 movies new to Pluto TV that deserve a spot on your watchlist.

There's no need to waste your evening sifting through Pluto TV's entire August lineup (which you can also find below) to figure out what to watch next. I've already done all the heavy lifting for you. Keep in mind that while Pluto TV is free, you'll need to create an account to watch anything. You'll also have to sit through some ads as well, which is par for the course for the price of free.

'Lady Bird' (2017)

The vibe: A bittersweet coming-of-age tale

Before Greta Gerwig brought "Barbie" to the big screen and has us all singing along to "I'm Just Ken," her solo directorial debut "Lady Bird" made her a household name. Every English major I know is obsessed with this movie. Saoirse Ronan stars as the titular Lady Bird, a young rebel without a cause about to graduate from a Catholic high school.

Like any teenage daughter worth her salt, she's constantly butting heads with her mom (Laurie Metcalf), but the two are more alike then either would care to admit. "Lady Bird" can be a tough watch if (like me) you come into it with your own family baggage, but if anything I think that made me enjoy the movie more. Every time I watch it, I find a little more empathy for Lady Bird and her mother, and a little more of myself in them both too.

'Problemista' (2023)

The vibe: Watching an artist's delusion play out in real time (also Tilda Swinton's there)

This surrealist comedy isn't for everyone, but if your sense of humor is broken after years of being chronically online, I promise you're in for a treat. Breakout "SNL" writer Julio Torres directs and stars as Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador living in New York City with dreams of one day working at Hasbro.

His ideas are a tough sell: Cabbage Patch Kids with smartphones to suggest they have better places to be than stuck playing tea party; Barbie dolls with their fingers crossed to add an air of "tension;" a Slinky that doesn't work on its own, presumably to encourage kids to embrace the journey over the destination. But with time on his work visa running out, an assistant gig for an art-world outcast (Tilda Swinton) becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realize his dream.

'Janet Planet' (2024)

The vibe: A tender drama that rips your heart out /pos

'Another mother-daughter coming of age tale?' I can practically hear you say. But hear me out. I first watched "Janet Planet" on a plane after hearing all the buzz about Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker's directorial debut a few years back. And y'all, I was not prepared. Haunting is the only word I can think to describe this movie. It trusts its audience, luxuriates in winding, meditative scenes, and when the emotional beats hit, they hit like a freight train.

Set in rural Massachusetts in the summer of 1991, it follows 11-year-old Lacy (Zoe Ziegler) and her single mother Janet (Julianne Nicholson), a free spirit who jumps from one bad fling to the next. More than once, I wanted to reach through the screen and shake some sense into her. I can't say enough good things about Ziegler's devastating sincerity as Lacy too, a performance that I suspect will resonate with any grown-up weird kid.

'Green Room' (2016)

The vibe: A punk-rock nail-biter with Patrick Stewart as a chilling villain

Let's take a break from the slow burns: What about a movie to get the heart pumping? "Green Room" is one of the most gripping dark thrillers I've ever seen, a genuinely visceral experience anchored by a star cast. At the center is a struggling punk band led by bassist Pat (Anton Yelchin), guitarist Sam (Alia Shawkat), drummer Reece (Joe Cole), and lead singer Tiger (Callum Turner). Strapped for cash, they take a last-minute gig at a remote bar in the Pacific Northwest, only to learn it’s a stronghold for neo-Nazis.

After curtain call, they walk in on a murder in the venue's green room — and the bar's terrifying owner Darcy (Patrick Stewart) isn't one to leave loose ends. Trapped in the green room with the victim’s friend Amber (Imogen Poots), the bandmembers must fight for their lives against Darcy’s bloodthirsty gang.

'Marcel the Shell with Shoes On' (2022)

The vibe: Who doesn't love a lil guy?

Ok, including this one feels a bit like cheating since I wrote about "Marcel the Shell With Shoes" last week as one of several heartwarming movies added to Tubi. But since Pluto TV added it too, I have another excuse to plug one of my favorite movies of all time. Based on a series of darling viral YouTube shorts from the early 2010s, "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On" is a mockumentary that follows the adventures of Marcel: a one-inch-tall, talking seashell in sneakers (voiced by Jenny Slate).

Director Dean Fleischer Camp, who also led the new "Lilo & Stitch" live-action remake, takes us into his bite-size world through slice-of-life videos after moving into an Airbnb that Marcel and his grandmother, Nana Connie (Isabella Rossellini), call home. The trailer starts with Marcel's perfect explanation of a documentary: "Oh it's like a movie but nobody has any lines and nobody even knows what is is while they're making it?"

As a side note, in the decade since the first Marcel shorts went viral, Slate and Fleischer Camp have gotten married and divorced, a fact you don't need to know to follow along but I think it adds an extra layer of tenderness to an already moving script.
