When it comes to deciding what to watch, it can get overwhelming. Fast. There are so many options out there. Even if you keep it to just the best streaming services, there are dozens of new shows and movies added every day. Lucky for you, it's my job to know exactly what's out there. So I've compiled a TV guide on what to watch tonight.

I've gone through everything from Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max etc to see what's recently landed. I've even added some live sports you can stream for free on some of the best free streaming services like Tubi, along with new movies released on streaming (PVOD).

‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ (2016) (Netflix)

Genre: Zombie horror movie

What it's about: Set in 19th-century England, "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" reimagines Jane Austen’s classic romance in a world overrun by the undead. Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) is a skilled fighter, while the aloof Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley) is an accomplished zombie killer. As the outbreak worsens, the pair must overcome their differences to survive.

‘Reasonable Doubt’ (season 4 premiere) (Hulu)

Genre: Legal crime drama series

What it's about: Season 4 picks up after a brutal attack leaves Jax’s (Emayatzy Corinealdi) family and newly established law firm shaken. As Jax’s most loyal client becomes embroiled in a spiraling media scandal, the Stewart Firm faces mounting pressure, personal grief and professional threats that could ultimately determine whether the firm survives or collapses.

Why you should watch it: This new season keeps the sharp legal drama, messy personal relationships and high-stakes twists that have made "Reasonable Doubt" such an addictive watch. Emayatzy Corinealdi gives a strong performance as Jax, while new additions including Meagan Good and Durrell “Tank” Babbs bring fresh energy to the series.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ (2026) (PVOD)

Genre: Superhero movie

What it's about: Four years after the events of "No Way Home," Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is living alone and fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man after the world forgot his identity. But when a mysterious new threat emerges and Peter’s powers begin changing, he must confront a dangerous transformation that could put everyone he loves at risk.

Why you should watch it: Tom Holland returns for another action-packed "Spider-Man" adventure, with Zendaya, Jacob Batalon and Jon Bernthal joining the cast. The film also introduces Sadie Sink in an exciting role and brings Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk into the mix, making this a particularly exciting chapter for both Spider-Man and the wider MCU.

If you want to get your blood pumping, the best Netflix action movies will get your heart racing.

However, scrolling through the top-rated streaming service can be a chore, so I thought I’d speed up the process by pointing you in the direction of a trio of thrilling adventures on the platform that I absolutely love.

These action classics range from a rollicking joyride through downtown L.A. with Keanu Reeves, to an iconic car caper that pits Vin Diesel against The Rock while the former tries to fleece a Brazilian police vault of $100m. Looking for fast thrills, brutal showdowns and a scene where Odysseus and Logan Roy have an extremely heated exchange in a beloved spy hit? Then these three Netflix action movies are definitely going to amp up your adrenaline.

'Speed' (1994)

Or, to pilfer a quote from Homer Simpson, “The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down”. SWAT officer Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) endures the commute from Hell as he finds himself trying to stop a runaway L.A. city bus that’s been armed with a bomb. The twist? If said coach’s speed drops below 50mph, everyone onboard goes kaboom.

Along with Jack for the ride is poor Annie Porter (Sandra Bullock), the unwitting passenger forced to keep the bus zooming across intersections at breakneck pace. Well, breakneck pace for a bus. The film’s premise naturally keeps the action rattling along with gusto.

It’s to “Speed’s” credit that even when the third act moves past the bus, the tension doesn’t let up thanks to a nerves-shredding subway sequence. Winning supporting turns from Jeff Daniels as Jack’s partner and Dennis Hopper as a demented bomber also elevate this ‘90s classic.

'The Bourne Supremacy' (2004)

The first film is iconic, but “The Bourne Supremacy’ is the most emotionally layered entry in Matt Damon’s iconic spy series in my book. In this sequel to the 2002 breakout hit, the former amnesiac Treadstone agent starts to piece back his memory as he tries to make a normal life for himself with returning love interest Marie (Franka Potente).

Of course, this being a high-octane spy adventure and not a dewey-eyed rom-com, Jason’s peaceful existence doesn’t last long. Cue a globe-hopping thrill ride that sees the resourceful and remorseful former assassin trying to stay one step ahead of the CIA after he’s framed by his former employers.

What really marks “The Bourne Supremacy” as an action classic is the introduction of director Paul Greengrass to the franchise. The British filmmaker injects a wonderful chaotic energy into scenes — be it a hard-hitting car chase through Moscow or a fight scene in Berlin where Bourne lays a bookish smackdown with a magazine. A final act one-on-one sitdown also gives the film a surprisingly mournful, tender quality.

'Fast Five' (2011)

The best entry in the Fast saga (though “Furious 7” may want a word). The main reason “Fast Five” screeches to the franchise’s top podium place? That would be the presence of Dwayne Johnson dropping into the saga like a heavily tattooed nuke. Playing U.S. DSS Agent Luke Hobbs, The Rock proves an exhilaratingly muscular match for Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel).

There’s a whole lot of fun to be had with “Fast Five”. Switching the action to Rio de Janeiro proves a wise choice, as Dom and his gang of loyal carjackers plan a daring $100m heist in sweltering conditions.

This is probably the last time you could argue the series had any intentions of trying to keep its action semi-grounded. Sure, the action is silly, but we’re not dealing with folks driving cars in space. I’m looking at you, “F9: The Fast Saga”. A bruising, brilliant action movie.

Every week, I comb through the latest movies added to Prime Video’s already sizeable library to find the best recently added thrillers. And this week’s selection is seriously strong.

We start with the first adventure of a certain British superspy, which makes quite a timely watch as it just celebrated its 64th birthday earlier in the week. Then let’s take a trip into the future (or at least, what was considered the future in the 1980s), for a legendary sci-fi movie, which includes my favorite Harrison Ford character (and it’s not Han Solo). Rounding out my picks is an overlooked war movie from director Guy Ritchie that stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a U.S. soldier.

'Dr. No’ (1962)

Yesterday (Oct. 5) was International James Bond Day, celebrated each year to commemorate the theatrical release of “Dr. No” on October 5, 1962. And in a move that is surely no coincidence, Prime Video has added (almost) every single James Bond film this month (including the non-Eon-produced “Never Say Never Again). “Dr. No” marked Bond’s first big-screen outing, and all these years later it remains a marvellously thrilling spy flick.

Based on Ian Fleming’s 1958 novel of the same name, the sixth in his series of Bond books, “Dr. No” sees Scottish actor Sean Connery donning the tuxedo for the first time as he plays Bond, James Bond, Britain’s most suave spy. Dispatched to Jamaica to investigate the sudden disappearance of a fellow secret agent, Bond finds himself on the trail of the eponymous villain, who has a dastardly plan to disrupt an American space launch.

‘Blade Runner’ (1982)

Forget Han Solo, if you ask me “what is Harrison Ford’s best sci-fi role,” I’m picking Rick Deckard every single time. After delivering “Alien” in 1979, director Ridley Scott helmed another titan of the genre, “Blade Runner,” a mere three years later. Adapted from Philip K. Dick’s novel, it transports viewers to a smoky vision of the future, where Earth is controlled by powerful corporations — which, I suppose, is actually worryingly close to our current reality.

Crucially, Prime Video has added “Blade Runner: The Final Cut,” a 2007 remaster released to celebrate the movie’s 25th anniversary. This version cleans up some of the effects, includes additional scenes, and even corrects a plot hole in the theatrical release. It’s the definitive version of a true sci-fi masterpiece. If you’re unfamiliar with the narrative basics, in “Blade Runner,” Ford’s Rick Deckard is a former cop, tasked with eliminating a group of synthetics, known as replicants, after they escape from a corporation-controlled colony.

‘Guy Ritchie's The Covenant’ (2023)

Don't just take my word that "Guy Ritchie's The Covenant" is a worthwhile watch this week. On the review site Rotten Tomatoes, this war thriller holds a near-perfect 98% score. Viewers call it “incredible,” “full of action,” and “very intense," and I certainly don't disagree. It's a gritty military movie that explores an unlikely bond.

Set during the later stages of the war in Afghanistan, US Army Sergeant John Kinley (Gyllenhaal) forms an unexpected friendship with a local Afghan interpreter, Ahmed (Dar Salim). The two start at odds, but when Ahmed saves Kinley’s life, they develop a brotherhood. Shortly afterwards, Ahmed and his family are in danger of being captured and killed, and Kinley is determined to repay his debt.

Netflix’s top 10 is packed with shows right now, but not everything making the list deserves a spot on your watchlist. If you’re staring at the rankings wondering what’s actually worth your time this week, I’ve picked out three shows that I think are particularly binge-worthy.

There’s a sweeping family drama spanning generations, a murder mystery set in a seemingly quiet Canadian town, and the fantasy adventure “Percy Jackson” that follows a teenager who discovers that the strange things happening around him may be connected to something far bigger. ‘East of Eden’

Netflix’s latest No. 1 show is “East of Eden,” a seven-part period drama created and written by Zoe Kazan. The series is based on John Steinbeck’s classic 1952 novel, and there’s a fascinating family connection behind this adaptation. Kazan’s grandfather, legendary director Elia Kazan, directed the famous 1955 movie starring James Dean. That film only covered the final part of Steinbeck’s story, while the new series has much more room to explore the novel in full and give its characters more time to develop. And, of course, Florence Pugh is a huge standout.

Set in California in the early 1900s, “East of Eden” follows Cathy Ames (Florence Pugh), a fiercely independent woman whose life becomes intertwined with the Trask family. After crossing paths with brothers Adam (Christopher Abbott) and Charles Trask (Mike Faist), Cathy becomes caught up in their complicated relationship and eventually builds a life with Adam. As the years pass, the story follows the Trask family across two generations, from Adam and Charles to Adam’s sons, Cal and Aron. Along the way, Cathy’s decisions have lasting consequences for the family.

‘Murder in a Small Town’

If you enjoy a good mystery and prefer shows that slowly reveal more with each episode, “Murder in a Small Town” is worth adding to your watchlist this week. This cozy crime drama is based on L.R. Wright’s Edgar Award-winning Karl Alberg mystery novels and has a much more relaxed feel than some of the darker crime shows out there. It’s not particularly graphic or violent, so you can easily settle in with a warm drink and enjoy the mystery without having to sit through anything too gruesome. Even better, Netflix has both seasons available, giving you 18 episodes to binge right now.

Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) is a former big-city detective who moves to the coastal town of Gibsons, British Columbia, to become its new police chief. His plans for a quieter life quickly change when a series of murders begins taking place around the community. Karl must investigate each case alongside his small team, while getting to know Cassandra Lee (Kristin Kreuk), a local librarian he meets soon after arriving. As more bodies turn up, Karl draws on his detective experience to identify suspects and uncover the circumstances behind each killing.

‘Percy Jackson’

Disney and Netflix recently struck a major licensing deal that has brought a selection of popular Disney+ titles to Netflix for a limited time, including “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” The timing couldn’t be better, with season 3 set to arrive in November. Based on Rick Riordan’s hugely popular book series, the fantasy adventure follows a teenager who discovers that the Greek gods and monsters from mythology are very real. It’s also a much more faithful adaptation of the books than the earlier movies, making the series a great choice for fans who were disappointed by those films.

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” centers around 12-year-old Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), a boy who discovers that he is a demigod after being accused of stealing Zeus’ powerful master bolt. With his friends Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) by his side, Percy leaves Camp Half-Blood and sets out across the United States to find the missing weapon before the gods go to war. Along the way, the trio encounters monsters, gods and dangerous obstacles as they race against time to complete their quest.

Fans of John Steinbeck and Florence Pugh had a good weekend: Netflix's new miniseries adaptation of "East of Eden" dropped on Oct. 1 and rapidly climbed the charts to become the streaming service's top TV show worldwide.

'House of Guinness'

Following the death of brewery mogul Sir Benjamin Guinness, his four adult children — Arthur (Anthony Boyle), Edward (Louis Partridge), Anne (Emily Fairn) and Ben (Fionn O'Shea) — are forced to work together to maintain their family's legacy as one of the country’s most successful business dynasties.

If you want "Succession"-level power struggles but with grittily immersive and high-level production design, period costuming and lavish real-world settings across eight episodes, "House of Guinness" is the family drama for you. And with a second season in the works at Netflix, there's no better time to catch up with the Guinnesses.

'War and Peace'

Adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s eponymous 1869 novel, this British epic from director Tim Harper and screenwriter Andrew Davies packs in 1,200 pages' worth of aristocratic Russian drama into six tidy, fast-paced episodes. Set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, the BBC adaptation centers on three young aristocrats—Pierre Bezukhov (Paul Dano), Natasha Rostova (Lily James), and Prince Andrei Bolkonsky (James Norton)—as their emotional lives and high-society romances collide with the brutal chaos of war.

The 2016 series was widely praised by critics, with The Telegraph ranking it fifth in its list of the greatest television adaptations of all time: "[I]t is safe to say that this is the greatest TV costume drama of the past decade and has raised the bar in a genre for which we are already renowned all over the world."

'The Buccaneers'

The calculated and ambitious Cathy Ames of Steinbeck's "East of Eden" might just fit in well with the enterprising ladies that make up "The Buccaneers," which wrapped up filming for its upcoming third season. Adapted by creator Katherine Jakeways from the unfinished novel of the same name by Edith Wharton, the Apple TV show revolves around a group of young American women (played by Kristine Frøseth, Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, Aubri Ibrag and Imogen Waterhouse) who descend upon London high society to secure suitable husbands and English titles, all while shaking up old, tired traditions.

Speaking of, unlike more faithful historical dramas, "The Buccaneers" leans into the youthful pluck of its subjects with contemporary pop music, creative costuming and campy humor.

It’s that time again when Netflix adds a bunch of movies and shows at the beginning of the month. Even though the streaming service added 70 movies as soon as October arrived, there were a few hidden films that weren’t included in the original lineup, and one of them is “Crawl.” This survival thriller movie, which came out in 2019, doesn’t just deal with a dangerous hurricane, but what the floods bring with them: some pretty terrifying alligators. Safe to say, it’s one of the most intense thrillers I’ve watched in recent years.

2026 has seen plenty of survival thrillers, including two shark movies that pit people against the ocean’s predators, Netflix’s “Thrash” and Prime Video’s “The Devil’s Mouth.” There’s also “Hungry,” where tourists on a swamp tour encounter a territorial hippopotamus. Clearly, there’s an appetite for films where people have to fight for survival against deadly animals, but despite this year being packed with them, I think they’re pretty poor films. Which is what makes “Crawl” such a standout in this crowded field.

So, if you’re looking for a tense survival movie that’s also a disaster thriller, with plenty of alligator attacks and a sequel on the way, here’s why you should stream “Crawl” on Netflix this week.

What is ‘Crawl’ about?

“Crawl” follows Haley Keller (Kaya Scodelario), a university swimmer who ignores evacuation orders during a Category 5 hurricane to search for her missing father, Dave (Barry Pepper). She eventually finds him badly injured in the crawl space beneath their old family home, but their situation quickly becomes more dangerous when large alligators enter the property.

As floodwaters rise around the house, Haley and Dave are forced to navigate the cramped crawl space while looking for a way out. Their attempts to escape lead them through the flooded streets and back into the increasingly damaged house, where they also try to protect their dog, Sugar. The pair must reach higher ground before the flooding completely overwhelms the house and the alligators close in.

‘Crawl’ is lean, mean and brutally entertaining

One of the best things about “Crawl” is how simple and straightforward it is. There’s no complicated plot or unnecessary subplots getting in the way. You’re here to watch Haley try to survive a flooded house full of alligators, and the movie gets straight to the point.

Kaya Scodelario is also excellent in the lead role, playing Haley as someone who can actually fight back rather than simply waiting to be rescued. She uses her swimming skills, strength and determination to survive while trying to save her injured dad. Every escape brings an even bigger problem, which ensures there’s always enough tension.

I found the scenes underneath the house particularly effective at keeping the movie intense. Haley has to deal with the alligators lurking in the darkness, but she also has to figure out how to get herself and her dad out safely as the water continues to rise. It creates this constant feeling that there’s a clock ticking in the background, even when the alligators aren’t immediately on screen. Plus, the film very much plays into claustrophobia and uses the cramped spaces underneath the house to its advantage.

The movie also gives Haley and her dad some much-needed backstory, which adds a little more emotion to what is otherwise a pretty adrenaline-fueled watch. Their relationship gives Haley another reason to keep fighting, so her goal isn’t simply to escape the alligators.

I’ll admit the CGI isn’t always the best, but it’s convincing enough that it rarely pulled me out of the movie. Alexandre Aja also clearly did his research into how alligators behave and hunt, which makes them feel much more threatening than your typical oversized movie monsters.

That’s ultimately why “Crawl” works so well for me and is one I find myself going back to over any other creature feature I’ve seen in 2026 so far. It doesn’t waste time on unnecessary exposition or side stories that slow things down. One problem leads naturally into the next, with each obstacle feeling like another level that Haley has to somehow get through. This week’s lineup of new movies across the best streaming services has been set, and there’s plenty to watch with arrivals on Netflix, Apple TV, Hulu, Peacock and new releases straight from your nearest movie theater heading to premium streaming platforms (PVOD).

There’s no doubt about the headliner this week; it’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” The webslinger is winding down his latest extraordinary theatrical run, and on Oct. 6, Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Spidey will be available on digital. Meanwhile, Netflix has a new crime thriller, "Animals," starring and directed by Ben Affleck, Apple TV has an action-comedy based on a nostalgic Mattel toy line, and Hulu is getting one of the spookiest horror movies I’ve seen in 2026.

You don’t need to waste precious movie-watching time figuring out what’s new on each service, as I’ve collected the most noteworthy picks down below. Plus, don’t forget to check out our companion guide covering all the top new TV shows to stream this week.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ (PVOD)

Tom Holland’s latest solo outing as Spider-Man scaled new heights over the summer, becoming not just the highest-grossing Spidey flick ever, but the highest-grossing movie of all time in North America. If there was any question about the world’s favorite superhero, the web-crawler just put the debate to bed. And remarkably, “Brand New Day” isn’t all hype. It’s an excellent summer blockbuster filled with action, comedy and heart.

Set in the wake of the world forgetting Peter Parker’s identity post “No Way Home,” Peter (Holland) is now dedicated full-time to protecting New York City. Operating as a hero without the support of his former girlfriend, MJ (Zendaya), and best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon), Peter's powers evolve in strange ways. Plus, he also faces a new threat to the city: a mysterious villain with powerful telekinetic abilities.

2023’s “Insidious: The Red Door” felt like a capper on the supernatural horror series, but Hollywood is never one to stop milking a series where there is still money on the table. And so, we have “Out of the Further,” the sixth installment in the spooky series that promised to breathe new life into the Insidious franchise but is ultimately a run-of-the-mill sequel. That’s fine if you merely want some jump scares in the lead-up to Halloween, but don’t expect more than cheap thrills.

With the story of the Lambert family concluded (for now, at least), “Out of the Further” centers on newcomer Gemma (Amelia Eve), a young mother who can travel the franchise’s trademark ghostly dimensions, the Further. But even more importantly, she can also bring objects and sinister entities from the Further back into our real world. Once a powerful demon learns of her unique power, they attempt to use Gemma for their own evil means.

‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ (PVOD)

‘Fall 2: Deadpoint’ (PVOD)

“Fall 2: Deadpoint” lands squarely in the unnecessary sequel bucket. The original was a palm-sweating watch and centered on two friends trapped thousands of feet in the air on a rickety radio tower. The sequel attempts to offer the same vertigo-inducing thrills, but a weak third act and an ill-judged attempt to link the proceedings to its predecessor sink this sequel. Still, there are at least some hair-raising moments that convey a terrifying sense of height.

New protagonist, Jax (Harriet Slater), sister of “Fall’s” Shiloh, is convinced by friends of her deceased sibling, Luce (Arsema Thomas), to accompany her on a dangerous plank walk on Mount Kawn in Thailand. 3,000 feet in the air, with only creaking wooden boards for support, a sudden rock slide leaves them stranded on the mountain with no hope of rescue. The two women have to summon their strength to find a way off the mountain and back to safety.

‘Animals’ (Netflix)

Netflix’s “Animals” sees Ben Affleck take charge in front of and behind the camera, playing the lead role and serving as director. While Netflix’s original slate has been a real mixed bag so far in 2026, there’s good reason to be confident about this one. Affleck has a strong track record as a thriller filmmaker, having helmed “Gone Baby Gone,” “The Town” and “Argo,” the latter even winning Best Picture at the Oscars. Here’s hoping “Animals” is another winner.

Mark Kimball (Affleck) is a Los Angeles mayoral candidate who has poured all of his and his wife’s (Kerry Washington) money into campaigning. So, when their son is kidnapped and the criminals demand a hefty ransom for his return, Mark becomes desperate. To get money quickly, he turns to the city’s underbelly, unleashing a side of his character that was never supposed to see the light of day.

‘Disclosure Day’ (Peacock)

Steven Spielberg is one of the titans of the sci-fi genre. “Jurassic Park,” “E.T. the Extraterrestrial,” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” are just some of the iconic genre efforts to his name. So, anytime Spielberg plays in the sci-fi sandbox, the movie world takes notice. “Disclosure Day” is another excellent sci-fi effort from Spielberg that combines thriller suspense with an appealing curiosity about our universe and humanity's place within it.

Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) is a TV weather reporter who, while on air, starts speaking in a strange, alien language. This brings her to the attention of a shadowy organization, led by Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth). Soon enough, she teams up with a cybersecurity expert (Josh O’Connor), and the two go on the run as the org hunts them down. Their mission is to expose government secrets covering up humanity’s history of extraterrestrial contact.

‘Matchbox: The Movie’ (Apple TV)

It would seem the lesson Hollywood learned from the juggernaut success of “Barbie” was to make more movies based on beloved children’s toys. And so, we’ve now got a new action-comedy blockbuster based on Matchbox, Mattel’s line of miniature die-cast vehicles. Now, I have to break some bad news: in this cinematic spin on Matchbox, the cars are normal-sized, which, in my eyes, makes this look like little more than a generic “Fast and Furious” clone.

Starring John Cena, who is no stranger to the Fast franchise, having played Jakob Toretto (brother of Vin Diesel’s Dom), “Matchbox: The Movie” centers on Sean Walker, a former soldier, who reunites with his childhood friends, only to get mixed up in a plot to steal nuclear warheads. Unwittingly caught up in an international conspiracy, they need to clear their names, save the world, and drive a series of suped-up motor vehicles very, very fast.

‘Hokum’ (Hulu)

Anybody on the hunt for great new horror movies for Halloween 2026 should check out my recent roundup. One of my inclusions was “Hokum,” so I’m pleased to see it head to Hulu this week. Released in the spring, this Damian McCarthy horror got overlooked as “Backrooms” and “Obsession” dominated multiplexes. But this chiller is spookier than both, and even as a dedicated horror watcher, I found myself getting very creeped out.

Cynical American novelist Ohm Bauman (Adam Scott) suffers from crippling writer’s block as he attempts to wrap up his popular book series. He takes a trip to rural Ireland, to the hotel his parents once honeymooned, to scatter their ashes and clear his head. But once in the Irish countryside, he learns of a local legend about a witch that haunts the hotel’s plush suite. Plagued by disturbing visions, he investigates the haunting, with chilling results.

"Lanterns" season 1 ended last night, and the season finale delivered shocking revelations. We learned who killed Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler); we learned once and for all whether there's another Manhunter out there, and we finally got to see Aaron Pierre put on the Green Lantern's ring and say the magic (slightly amended) words that make John Stewart Earth's protector going forward.

In short, the season finale answered our questions ... mostly. Luckily, I was invited to an HBO panel hosted by The Ringer's Mallory Rubin, featuring none other than Pierre and his co-star Chandler, and they were able to answer a few more questions, including their reactions to the end of season 1, finally seeing this show on screen and how they would use the ring if they had it for themselves for 24 hours. Read on for some of their more insightful comments.

'He won my heart over in the end'

Both Chandler and Pierre were surprisingly at peace with the ending of "Lanterns." That's not to say they were ready to move on; in fact, if I didn't know better, I'd have said they were still in character. Pierre largely took the lead in the press conference, with Chandler chiming in with some insights tinged with comic relief. But this show wrapped up for them nearly a year and a half ago.

That said, they still hadn't seen the finished product until the "Lanterns" season premiere eight weeks ago. That means that last night was the end of this chapter in the Green Lanterns' story for them, not just for us. And it seems to have moved Chandler in particular.

“Something that really struck me is the last scene with Aaron and I [Chandler] in the show — it struck me this morning, having to say goodbye," Chandler explained in his signature Texan/Southern hybrid accent. "I had to gently wipe away a tear,” he admitted, also coming clean that he had to hide the outburst of emotion from his wife.

Still, this isn't to say Pierre felt nothing. He was effusive in his praise throughout the interview, shouting out writers, cast and crew, etc. But he also reiterated that this is a dream come true for him. “To call this opportunity to play John Stewart a gift would be a massive understatement,” Pierre stated. “If I could choose to play any superhero, it would be John Stewart.”

Our heroes are blissfully ignorant of any backlash

For those of us who are terminally online, there's no denying there's been some backlash to this show. Some of it is valid; even I wouldn't declare this show without fault. But a lot of it, frankly, doesn't come from a good place, and I don't even want to give it oxygen by addressing it here.

The good news is, while we may see some of the hate, Chandler and Pierre miss out on it entirely. Both stars admitted they don't use social media for the most part, and Chandler doesn't even have it.

"I hear things," he told Rubin. "I don’t have social media. I don’t have anything." He continued to explain, saying that someone once sent him a video of him and Pierre singing together, but that's about all the online feedback he received. "I haven’t heard anything bad. I don’t know what’s out there; I’m sure there’s fifty percent/fifty percent [50/50]."

One thing he did highlight, though, was people coming up to him to tell him about what the show meant to them, something that was also happening to his co-star. "I’d say for me, most of what I’ve experienced over these eight weeks is people approaching me in public," Pierre said. "And people from every walk of life have told me that this, that and the third have moved me, and I can't wait for the next episode.”

Pierre was also asked earlier in the press conference about how "Lanterns" is suited to exploring Black identity, something that I felt tied in nicely with both stars being approached about how the DC show was impacting people.

"'Lanterns' is a story; 'Lanterns' is a creative team. What they did so beautifully and so masterfully is they create conversation. They create critical conversation, they create necessary conversation, they give insight—they give insight to a number of perspectives."

At this point, Chandler smartly chimed in, "You sound like you know what you’re talking about."

After about 40 minutes, the conversation drew to a close. But Rubin had one last question, submitted by Torsten Schmidt, regarding what each "Lanterns" star would do if they had the Green Lantern's ring for a 24-hour period. It was a question that stumped Pierre, who was unable to come up with an answer on the spot.

For Chandler, the answer was to borrow from a "Twilight Zone" episode and make it so we could tune out those looking to do evil. "I think it's a construct [referring to what he'd create with the ring] where everyone, everyone who is out to do bad and not be part of the human experience, veering too far off themselves or towards places they shouldn't be, would sort of fade away in a transparency, so you could barely see them."

That said, he did want to clarify that these people should still be able to watch HBO, so they can see all of "Lanterns."

It’s that time of week when we help you figure out what flicks are worth watching on Amazon’s streaming platform. As someone guilty of endless, non-committal scrolling, I certainly appreciate Prime Video’s top 10 chart guiding me towards the movies a whole lot of viewers are being drawn to over any given week.

However, Prime Video’s top 10 can be pretty hit-or-miss, and just because a film has skyrocketed to the top of the charts doesn’t necessarily mean it’s worth checking out. To save you some time, I’ve sifted through this week’s most popular movies on Prime to find the ones that are actually worth your precious time. That includes a big-budget heist film, a Tom Cruise thriller people don’t talk about enough, and one of my favorite ever Tarantino movies.

The movies below are taken from Prime Video’s top 10 as of Monday, October 5, 2026. As not all the movies on there are all that great, I’ve picked out three choices I’m confident you won’t regret watching.

‘Now You See Me: Now You Don't’ (2025)

If you can get past the needless own goal the third entry in this magic-filled heist franchise commits, there’s quite a lot to enjoy about this breezy caper. Seriously though, how is this not called “Now You Three Me”?! Getting past that naming faux pas, this threequel picks up 10 years after the events of the last entry.

Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Isla Fisher reprise their roles as thieving illusionists, with their latest globe-hopping adventure touching upon the issue of deepfakes across some elaborate setpieces. It’s obviously all thoroughly silly stuff, but the core cast remain charming, and the film rattles along at pace over a lean 112 minute runtime. Rosamund Pike admittedly isn’t given much to sink her teeth into as the villainous Verokinka Vanderberg but the film’s action is directed with real flair by Ruben Fleischer. Turn off your brain and just enjoy the not quite magical, but fun enough ride.

‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood' (2019)

Forget his Oscar-winning turn in “The Revenant”: this is arguably the greatest performance of Leonardo DiCaprio’s legendary career. Playing over the hill Western star Rick Dalton during the dying days of Hollywood's Golden Era, he gets through his whiskey-soaked days mainly thanks to Brad Pitt’s carbonite cool stunt man. It’s no wonder Pitt is reprising the titular role next month in spin-off “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth”.

Quentin Tarantino's ninth movie sports all his usual hallmarks. Banger after banger! A rapier-sharp script! Copious flamethrower violence! Much like “Inglorious Basterds”, “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” rewrites history in an absurdly gory, but ultra satisfying finale that sees Rick and Cliff unwittingly prevent a tragedy in large parts thanks to Booth’s awesome dog. Bruce Lee fans probably appreciate a certain fight scene, and Margot Robbie is underutilised, but this is a heartfelt love letter to Hollywood’s last real romantic age.

‘Jack Reacher’ (2012)

Long before Alan Ritchson ate all the protein to play Lee Child’s badass drifter in the hit Prime Video show, Tom Cruise made the role his own in this overly slept-on thriller. With Ritchson’s fourth series now available to stream in its entirety, it’s little wonder folks are hunting down Cruise’s portrayal of the former U.S. Army investigator. “Jack Reacher” is a clever and lean actioner that’s slickly directed by longtime Cruise collaborator Christoper McQuarrie.

Though the “Digger” star’s version may be a whole lot shorter than the book incarnation, the iconic star turns in an intensely focused performance. Any worries about his height are quickly forgotten thanks to the film’s superb fight choreography. After a startling opening sniper spree which sees five seemingly random people murdered in downtown Pittsburgh, Reacher sets out to find the truth about the assassinations. Cue epic car chases, several plot twists and a brilliant supporting turn from the late, great Robert Duvall.

In a surprising move that feels a bit like the "KPop Demon Hunters" joining the cast of “Avengers: Doomsday,” Netflix and Disney+ have announced they’re crossing the streaming divide and have inked a deal to bring a selection of Disney movies and shows to Netflix.

Variety reports that Disney Entertainment and Netflix have “entered into an expansive new content licensing agreement, which will bring an eclectic mix of library titles and current-season TV shows to Netflix for varying periods of time.” In simple terms, with the buzzwords removed, that means Disney+ content is being added to Netflix.

Now don’t go dreaming about getting access to Disney+’s entire library on Netflix. You won’t be streaming every season of “The Mandalorian” or the upcoming Marvel show “VisionQuest” on Netflix (or at least, not yet). Disney is bringing a curated selection of its movies and shows to Netflix between now (October 2026) and a vague “early 2027" window.

The rollout has already started, with the first two seasons of Disney+ original “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” added to Netflix over the weekend (Sunday, Oct. 4). On the same day, Netflix also got all five “Ice Age” movies, which Disney’s 20th Century Studios distributes.

These are just the tip of the iceberg (yes, that was my attempt at an “Ice Age” pun). According to Variety, over the remainder of 2026 and into 2027, the following Disney shows/movies will be added to Netflix.

Additionally, Netflix will receive a selection of Disney-owned shows that have wrapped up and are considered complete. This rollout starts with all four seasons of “Felicity” on October 7, and the ‘90s college drama will be followed by “Revenge,” “Army Wives,” “Fresh Off the Boat” and “This Is Us” (which was previously available on Netflix) at an unspecified date.

Analysis: Why Disney is playing nice with Netflix

In the current streaming landscape, the best streaming services are all competing for your monthly subscription. While many households subscribe to multiple services (as our recent streaming survey displayed), a monthly entertainment budget can only stretch so far.

Viewed through this lens, it might seem baffling that Disney would “help out” a rival, particularly one as dominant as Netflix. Disney has roughly 130 million subscribers compared to Netflix’s 325 million paying accounts. The world’s biggest streamer doesn’t need any extra help.

However, look a little closer, and this agreement starts to make more sense from Disney’s perspective. It’s no coincidence that Disney is offering Netflix a selection of ongoing shows with new seasons in the pipeline, or movies belonging to currently active franchises.

Take “Percy Jason” as an example. The show’s third season debuts on Disney+ on Nov. 20. The first two seasons on Netflix will function almost as a teaser. Disney will be hoping that viewers get hooked on the fantastical adventures of the young demigod, and then subscribe to Disney+ next month to see what happens next.

Or in the case of the “Ice Age” movies, the sixth installment, “Ice Age: Boiling Point,” arrives in theaters in February 2027. So, now's a good time to get young viewers hooked on the franchise before next year.

“Will Trent” season 5 and “Shifting Gear” season 3 are scheduled to premiere on ABC in early 2027, and “Tracker” kicked off its second season on CBS over the weekend (on Oct. 4). Disney appears to be using Netflix as a way to advertise its content to more viewers.

That leaves library titles like “Felicity” and “Revenge,” as well as the Pixar movies like “Soul” and “Elio.” These are either complete or unlikely to become larger franchises (don’t hold your breath for “Elio 2”). In this case, Disney is likely trying to maximize the return on these older/less popular shows and movies, with Netflix paying a licensing fee.

At the same time, Disney is also keeping its real crown jewels to itself. There's no hint that anything from Star Wars or Marvel will be crossing over from Disney+ to Netflix. Plus, Disney+’s library is unaffected; all these shows/movies will still be available on Disney’s service.

This agreement looks like a win-win. Netflix gets new content for its subscribers, and Disney gets to promote its ongoing series and franchises, while squeezing out a little more revenue from its back catalog.

I certainly wouldn’t have predicted this unlikely streaming partnership, but now that it’s been announced, I can see how both sides are benefiting. Plus, as viewers, it's certainly not a bad deal for us, either.

Genre: Horror movie

What it's about: "The Boogeyman" follows teenage Sadie Harper (Sophie Thatcher) and her younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) as they struggle with their mother’s death and their father’s emotional absence. Their lives take a terrifying turn when a troubled patient visits their home and leaves behind a supernatural entity that begins preying on the family, feeding on their suffering and fear.

Why you should watch it: Rob Savage does a great job creating an unsettling atmosphere in this Stephen King adaptation, with some really clever visual choices that make the movie even creepier. There are some effective jump scares and plenty of genuinely unsettling moments throughout, making this a solid choice if you’re after a straightforward supernatural horror movie.

‘Harlan Coben’s Final Twist’ (season 2 premiere) (Paramount+)

Genre: True crime documentary series

What it's about: "Harlan Coben’s Final Twist" is a true crime documentary series in which mystery author Harlan Coben investigates a different real-life murder case in each episode. The season explores shocking crimes, hidden motives and unexpected developments, using interviews, archival footage and Coben’s narration to uncover the truth behind cases that took surprising turns.

Why you should watch it: This is a solid pick for true crime fans who enjoy cases packed with unexpected developments. Each episode tells a self-contained story, with interviews and archival footage adding detail to the investigations. Harlan Coben’s involvement also gives the series a distinctive mystery-focused angle that should appeal to fans of his work.

‘Between Steps’ (series premiere) (Hulu)

Genre: Romance series

What it's about: Min-jae (Choo Young-woo) is a former swimmer who lost a leg to illness and is now pursuing a PhD in robotics. His carefully controlled life changes when he meets Yu-jin (Kim So-hyun), a graduate student searching for a new direction. As they grow closer, their relationship helps both of them find new possibilities for their futures.

Why you should watch it: "Between Steps" looks like an easy choice for K-drama fans who prefer grounded romance over huge melodrama. Choo Young-woo and Kim So-hyun have already generated plenty of buzz for their natural chemistry, while the series comes from the director behind "Something in the Rain" and "One Spring Night."

What is 'The Bisexual' about?

Series creator Desiree Akhavan stars as Leila, a thirtysomething Iranian-American woman who has lived proudly as an out lesbian in London for over a decade. However, she splits from her long-term girlfriend and business partner, Sadie (Maxine Peake), when she realizes that she's been living a lie and actually identifies as bisexual.

She is then forced to move in with a stranger, a neurotic novelist named Gabe (Brian Gleeson), who acts as a makeshift wingman as the newly single Leila hilariously explores her sexual identity and begins dating men as well as women.

All the while, her late-stage coming out causes ripples of tension throughout her previously monosexual queer community of friends and loved ones. (Saskia Chana, Michèlle Guillot and John Dagleish also star.)

There are plenty of LGBTQ+ movies and series on streaming that explore queer rites of passage like coming out, self-discovery, found family, and the like, but only a few that focus on the unique experience of being bisexual, and even fewer with the thoughtfulness that "The Bisexual" shows Leila's story.

As our protagonist navigates her identity shift, she faces surprising microaggressions and a social fallout from her lesbian friends, bringing up tensions of bi-erasure within the LGBTQ+ community and questions of what modern-day queerness looks like.

The air may be getting crisp, but the TV calendar is heating up. As a streaming editor who watches TV for a living, I’ve rounded up the biggest new and returning shows to watch across Netflix, Paramount+, Prime Video and more of the best streaming services.

This week brings a fresh take on Stephen King’s “Carrie,” a swashbuckling new adaptation of “Treasure Island” and “Below,” a spooky seaside thriller. There’s also a new “NCIS” spinoff that takes the franchise to New York, because apparently there are still corners of America that haven’t been investigated by federal agents.

With October bringing cooler weather, there's a particularly good excuse to stay inside with the TV remote. Here’s what to watch this week.

‘NCIS: New York’ (CBS)

The vibes: LL Cool J brings Navy SEAL swagger to the streets of NYC.
The plot: Sam Hanna from “NCIS: Los Angeles” returns to his hometown of New York, but he’s not flying solo. There’s an obvious first choice this week: “Animals.” This new Netflix original crime thriller comes from Ben Affleck (he stars and directs), and looks like a gripping watch. Or if you’re feeling the Halloween vibes already, “The Boogeyman” is a solid Stephen King adaptation that uses its supernatural story to explore family trauma and grief. In need of a laugh? Netflix has a star-studded documentary that chronicles the career of comedian Martin Mull; it’s called “Who is Martin Mull?” A question you’ll no doubt be able to answer after watching.

On the TV show side of the fence, Netflix is adding the latest seasonal batch of episodes for its enduringly popular game show “Is It Cake?” No prizes for guessing the theme is Halloween. And sticking with the spooky theme is “Haunted Hotel” season 2, an adult animated series set in a hotel haunted by ghosts — it’s a very literal name for a show.

‘The Boogeyman’

What it's about: Based on Stephen King’s short story of the same name, “The Boogeyman” is a classic ghost story in which a family is tormented by a supernatural entity that feeds on its victims’ suffering. The sinister specter is also a clear allegory for grief, as the family, comprised of two sisters and their father, is still reeling from the recent death of their mom.

Why you should watch it: October is the spookiest month of the year, so there’s no doubt many Netflix viewers will be looking for horror movies right now. As far as Stephen King adaptations go, “The Boogeyman” is a solid enough pick. It’s a little generic, but the author himself was a huge fan of director Rob Savage’s take on his work. Then again, King also praised the awful 2022 version of “Firestarter,” so he might not be the most reliable film critic!

‘Who Is Martin Mull?’

What it's about: A documentary celebrating the life of musician, comedian and actor Martin Mull, “Who Is Martin Mull?” traces the legacy of a man who left an imprint on every scene he touched, from music to even painting. Described as “Witty, honest and life-affirming,” it’s a documentary full of humor and heart in equal measure.

Why you should watch it: Mull certainly left his mark on the comedy scene, from his raucous stand-up sets to appearances in popular shows like “Roseanna,” Arrested Development,” and “Two and a Half Men. This documentary looks beyond the jokes at the man himself, with input from Steve Martin, Tom Waits, David Alan Grier and plenty more

‘Animals’

What it's about: Mark Kimball (Ben Affleck) is an L.A. mayoral candidate with just a few hours to come up with a ransom payment after his son is kidnapped. Having spent their savings on the campaign trail, Mark and his wife (Kerry Washington) are forced to turn to less savory means to get the cash necessary to save their child.

Why you should watch it: “Animals” is one of Netflix’s tentpole original fall movies, and its setup appears ripe for a gripping thriller. Alongside playing the lead role, Ben Affleck also directs, which is good news because he has a strong track record in this genre, having also helmed “Gone Baby Gone,” “The Town” and the Best Picture-winning “Argo.”

‘Haunted Hotel’ season 2

What it's about: “Haunted Hotel” is a zany adult animated series that centers on a recent divorcée, Katherine (Eliza Coupe), who moves her two children into an Upstate New York hotel previously owned by her deceased brother, Nathan (Will Forte). However, the hotel is actually haunted (hence the name!) with Nathan among the spirits roaming the halls.

Why you should watch it: The first season of “Haunted Hotel" holds a strong 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and while it doesn’t reinvent the adult animation genre, it makes for great background noise while folding laundry (I swear that’s a compliment). “Haunted Hotel” season 2 will offer more paranormal hijinks with the show’s eccentric cast.

‘Is It Cake? Halloween’ season 2

What it's about: You likely know the gist of “Is It Cake?” at this point, but for the unfamiliar, it’s a glossy game show in which contestants have to bake a cake that resembles an everyday item before a panel of judges tries to guess which item is actually cake. In this season of seasonal episodes, the cake-hiding objects are all Halloween-themed.

Why you should watch it: “Is It Cake?” is TV junk food, and I’m okay with that. It’s never evolved beyond its simple setup, and while the overly bright presentation often goes overboard, it’s fun to play along at home, trying to guess what is and isn’t cake from the comfort of your sofa. Another Netflix show that is perfect for when you’re doing chores.

Tom Cruise remains one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood, and for good reason. Armed with jaw-dropping stunts, a gleaming smile and an intense gaze unmatched by many, he has built a household name recognizable across every corner of the globe.

With lead roles in over 40 films and an eye-popping box office total grossing well past $10 billion, his staying power is undeniable. Beyond acting, Cruise has cemented his legacy as a producer, guiding the hit "Mission: Impossible" movies through its eighth spectacle, "Final Reckoning."

Yet while he may be known primarily as an invincible action star, Cruise has consistently played characters with incredible depth and range. Throughout his career, he has seamlessly shifted from the charming yet competitive romantic lead to a cold, calculating killer or a greedy, misguided younger brother. 'A Few Good Men'

This military legal thriller is best known by many for its famous line spoken by Jack Nicholson: "You can't handle the truth!" However, it wouldn't be the same without Cruise playing the cocky Military lawyer Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee.

When defense lawyer Kaffee takes on the case of two Marines accused of killing one of their colleagues, many expect him to simply settle the case out of court. Cruise's natural overconfidence as portrayed in his character, Kaffee, becomes a quality that people plan to manipulate to keep the truth a secret. When he realizes this raw reality, Cruise's stone-cold determination to take the case to court shocks many.

Nicholson, who plays Colonel Nathan R. Jessup, was nominated for the Oscar. However, Cruise wows the audience when he plays opposite Nicholson in the famous court scene that prompted the line we all know so well.

'Rain Man'

In this Oscar award-winning film, Cruise plays Charlie Babbitt, the selfish brother of Dustin Hoffman's Raymond. When Charlie finds out that his autistic savant brother has inherited a great deal of money, he's determined to get hold of what he believes is rightfully his. So, Charlie absconds with Ray away from his residential home, sending the two on a memorable road trip neither will forget.

Hoffman took home an Academy Award for his role. So did the director, the screenwriter and the picture as a whole. While Tom Cruise may not have received an Oscar nomination for his role in the film, he is the perfect actor to play alongside Hoffman. You have the reward of watching him shed his character's shallow, flashy demeanor and embrace a subtle maturity as he learns why his brother was sent away. A must-watch film that is one of Cruise's best.

'The Firm'

No one but Cruise could have played the part of Mitch McDeere in "The Firm," an adaptation of the book by John Grisham. It could be why the 2012 television series of the book was canceled after only a single season. In the film, Cruise's McDeere is hired by a "small" firm from Memphis right out of law school. Although everything seems on the up-and-up, it isn't long before he realizes that he is surrounded by crooks.

It's the transformation of McDeere's smugness over landing such a top-notch job into an intensity over uncovering the truth and protecting his career — and life — that makes this such a powerful Tom Cruise movie. However, what may surprise many is that Holly Hunter took home the Oscar for her role as Tammy Hemphill, the secretary of the private detective that McDeere hires. Despite Cruise's lack of Oscar recognition, this is one of his best movies.

'Jerry Maguire'

This time, Cruise got a coveted Oscar nomination for the role of Jerry Maguire, a sports agent at the top of his game. However, Jerry gets a crisis of conscience when one of his clients gets seriously hurt. Confronted by the client's son, he realizes he has no heart for those he is supposed to represent.

When Jerry writes a mission statement, encouraging his agency to change their ways, he loses it all. But it also connects him with a potential love interest, Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger). He also manages to keep a single client, Rod Tidwell, played by Cuba Gooding Jr.

The movie is a perfect blend of excellent acting, a strong script, and superb directing that makes this one of the most memorable romantic comedies. It also happens to include the famous Tom Cruise line that gives us all the feels: "You complete me."

'Collateral'

Going against his typical role, Tom Cruise plays a ruthless killer in "Collateral." Vincent is visiting Los Angeles to finish off a few people who are supposed to testify in court against a drug lord, as well as a couple of other lawyers involved in the case. When he gets into the cab of Max, played by Jamie Foxx, not everything goes according to plan.

Cruise takes out all the charm in his personality to depict a heartless killer — although what remains is a certain reasonableness to his personality as he almost convinces Foxx's Max to stick with him for the long haul. However, Foxx's Max becomes braver by the moment.

In yet another film where another actor was Oscar-nominated over Cruise — this time it was Foxx — it still remains one of Cruise's most complex characters, making it one of his best movies.

'Top Gun: Maverick'

Timing is everything, as the old adage says. That is possibly why "Top Gun: Maverick" was such a success. Cruise starred in and produced the film, a sequel to his career-making film, "Top Gun." While it was ready to go in 2020, he delayed its release for when people could actually see it in theaters. How can any of us forget that famous scene when Cruise dances in his underwear to the Bob Seger song, "Old Time Rock & Roll"? One of the movies that made him who he is today, Cruise plays Joel Goodsen, a college-bound high school senior who itches to cut loose from his parents' ties. Finally having the opportunity to live a little when his parents go on vacation, things for Goodsen go from bad to worse as each rule is broken.

Acting alongside Rebecca De Mornay, who plays the elusive and appealing call girl, Joel learns about life, love, and consequences in this iconic film. Coupled with a strong script and excellent music from the '80s, this is one of Tom Cruise's most memorable movies.

'The Thing'

When we think of director John Carpenter, most minds immediately jump to his 1978 slasher classic, "Halloween". But true horror aficionados know his repertoire extends far beyond Michael Myers to include masterpiece creature features like "The Thing."

Set in the frozen, isolated tundra of Antarctica, the story kicks off when a group of American researchers grow puzzled after watching Norwegian scientists frantically try to shoot a dog fleeing toward their base. The chase ends in a helicopter crash, the dog is brought inside, and all seems well—until it very much isn't. Upon investigating the destroyed Norwegian camp, the team finds the inhabitants dead and brings a grotesque, mysterious corpse back for autopsy. Overnight, absolute hell breaks loose. The researchers quickly realize they are facing a shapeshifting alien organism that can perfectly assimilate anyone it touches, turning every single survivor into a deadly threat.

'The Blob'

While 1950s black-and-white and early color monster movies can be an acquired taste, the 1958 classic "The Blob" serves up just the right amount of vintage camp to make it a blast. The trouble begins when a mysterious meteorite crashes near a local Lovers' Lane. Teenage sweethearts Steve (played by Steve McQueen in his very first leading role) and Jane decide to check it out. Unfortunately, a local farmer reaches the impact site first. An oozing, gelatinous mass engulfs his hand, sending him running into the road where Steve and Jane accidentally strike him with their car.

The couple rushes the farmer to the town doctor, but the rapidly growing amoeba makes short work of both the patient and the physician. With the gelatinous terror devouring everything in its path, Steve and Jane race against time to save their town. Keep an eye out for the iconic sequence where frantic moviegoers flee a theater — a moment still lovingly re-enacted annually at the actual theater where it was filmed.

'Tremors'

It’s always funny to remember how Kevin Bacon once admitted to Entertainment Weekly that taking a role in "Tremors" felt like hitting rock bottom in his career. Little did he know, he was starring in what would become one of the most beloved cult classics of the 1990s.

Set in the tiny, isolated desert town of Perfection, Nevada, handymen Valentine McKee (Bacon) and Earl Bass (Fred Ward) are ready to pack their bags for greener pastures. Their exit is abruptly blocked when local townspeople begin mysteriously vanishing or turning up dead. Trapped and targeted from below, Val and Earl join forces with geology graduate student Rhonda LeBeck (Finn Carter) to uncover the truth: giant, carnivorous, worm-like creatures are hunting by sound beneath the sand. Armed with quick wits and plenty of firepower, the town fights back in a creature feature that has effortlessly stood the test of time.

'Cloverfield'

Found-footage horror movies seem to be a gamble for a filmmaker, as it's hard to know how well the movie will be received. But since its release in 2008, Cloverfield has stood the test of time. The movie kicks off with a group of friends having a going-away party for their friend, Rob (Michael Stahl-David). His friend, Hud (T.J. Miller), is called to film the partygoers' goodbyes until a strange earthquake interrupts the celebration.

They turn on the local news that shares more about what's happening, including an overturned ship. They rush to the roof to find out what's happening, and another earthquake hits. That's when they see a monster go by, and the head of the Statue of Liberty rolls down the street. They make a plan to flee the city, until Rob gets a call from his old girlfriend, Beth (Odette Annable), pleading for his help, sending a group of four friends out into the chaos to find her. There's plenty of shaky film to create the ambiance of real found footage, which works in this movie. Be sure to watch until the credits roll for the final scene of the movie, too, by the way.

'The Mist'

Frank Darabont has given us a lot of movies over the years, including the Oscar-nominated "The Shawshank Redemption" and the Oscar-winning "The Green Mile." So it's no surprise he manages to pull off a monster movie, especially one adapted from a Stephen King novella. Set in Bridgton, Maine, the movie opens with the town recovering from the aftermath of a storm.

There's tension between neighbors, with David Drayton (Thomas Jane) clearly at odds with Brent Norton (Andre Braugher), but that doesn't stop them from burying the hatchet enough to head into town together. They're not the only ones at the grocery store, either, as everyone else seems to be shopping at the same time. When a mysterious mist envelops the town, they're trapped in the store. Soon, they hear reports (and eventually see for themselves) of violent creatures within the mist. But what becomes even scarier is the townspeople turning on each other and a cult-like group determined to keep people from leaving. What makes this movie unique is that it's about the monster outside and the one within.

I’ve been on a bit of a Brad Pitt binge recently. I greatly enjoyed “Heart of the Beast” in theaters (I recommended watching it in cinemas in my video review), and last week I compiled a roundup of the best Brad Pitt movies on each of the top streaming services. So, it feels like a case of auspicious timing that 2019’s “Ad Astra” was part of Netflix’s October 1 movie drop, which saw almost 60 films added to the platform at once. Here’s a bold statement: “Ad Astra” might be Pitt’s most underrated movie to date.

From director James Gray, it’s an ambitious sci-fi that goes toe-to-toe with genre greats like “Interstellar” in the visual department. While its narrative is a little alienating (some have labeled it boring, I will admit), it’s anchored by an excellent performance from Pitt. This thoughtful drama asks some big questions about humanity's place in the universe.

It’s not a sci-fi movie centered on high-stakes battles against space creatures, but instead a flick that uses its intergalactic setting to explore some very human ideas. If that sounds appealing to you, here’s the scoop on “Ad Astra” now that it’s available to stream on Netflix.

What is ‘Ad Astra’ about?

Thirty years ago, experienced astronaut Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones) led a daring voyage into deep space to search for signs of intelligent life in our galaxy. 16 years into the mission, contact was lost with Clifford and his team, and nobody knows what happened.

Back on Earth, his estranged son Roy (Brad Pitt), who followed in his father’s footsteps and became an accomplished astronaut, experiences a series of power surges that threaten life on our planet. The vital answers that humanity needs may be linked to Clifford’s mission.

When readings from Neptune suggest that Clifford could still be alive, Roy heads into outer space in the hopes of uncovering the truth about his father. And, of course, save our threatened planet in the process.

Here’s why you should stream ‘Ad Astra’ on Netflix

If for no other reason, “Ad Astra” is worth watching for its stunning presentation. The movie takes viewers from Earth to the Moon, over to Mars and beyond, and each intergalactic sight is quite something to behold. It’s a truly marvellous visual trip through our solar system.

If the visuals are bold, bright and beautiful, the narrative framework is a little colder. Pitt’s Roy is an interesting character, driven by a sense of duty and resentment towards his long-absent father, but he’s not the warmest figure. The movie attempts to make him more sympathetic by including a love interest, his estranged wife, played by Liv Tyler.

While the trailer(s) aimed to sell “Ad Astra” as a grand sci-fi epic, and to some degree it most certainly is, beyond one moon-surface buggy chase sequence (which includes a gang of space bandits!), the thrills in this movie are found in the quieter, character-driven moments.

A recurring motif in which Roy undergoes a series of psychological evaluations is particularly effective at bringing you into the character's headspace. Nevertheless, don’t expect an action-packed trip through space. “Ad Astra” is a subtler and more meditative watch.

It should also be noted that, while “Ad Astra” concerns itself with intergenerational trauma and Roy’s difficulties connecting with others, there’s still an optimism to the movie, especially in its conclusion. It’s a sci-fi flick that ultimately finds hope within our universe.

Maybe it was the (arguably) misleading marketing, which sold “Ad Astra” as something it’s not, or perhaps it was the slow-burn pacing, but not all viewers warmed to this one. I can still vividly recall heading to my local DVD store (those still existed in 2019) to pick up a Blu-ray copy after enjoying it so much in theaters, only for the clerk to tell me it was the worst movie they’d ever watched. So, this is a your mileage may vary situation.

On the other hand, the movie's critical reception was strong. On Rotten Tomatoes, “Ad Astra” has an 83% rating, enough for a “Certified Fresh” seal of approval. The site’s summary reads, “‘Ad Astra’ takes a visually thrilling journey through the vast reaches of space while charting an ambitious course for the heart of the bond between parent and child.”

In Pitt’s stacked filmography, “Ad Astra” stands out as a movie worthy of reevaluation (the 40% audience score on RT is far too low), and its recent arrival on Netflix may just give it that chance. ‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’

One of my great cinematic disappointments this year is “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” Not the movie itself, which absolutely rocks. But rather its box office struggles. Maybe it was the divisive, jarring ending of its predecessor, “28 Years Later,” or maybe it was the short turnaround between sequels, but for whatever reason, audiences just didn’t show up, which is a great shame. This post-apocalyptic flick is twisted in all the right ways and includes one of Ralph Fiennes very best performances. Seriously, he should mount an Oscar campaign.

Set directly after “28 Years Later,” young Spike (Alfie Williams) is inducted into the gang of Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell), a sadistic man-child who roams the zombie-filled Great Britain terrorizing survivors. Meanwhile, the returning Dr. Ian Kelson (Fiennes) experiments on an alpha zombie named Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry), in the hopes of finding a cure. Eventually, these two storylines come together in an unforgettable, very bloody finale. A quick word of warning: “The Bone Temple” is gory, so it’s not for the squeamish.

‘Obsession’

“Obsession” is the obvious choice for the movie to watch this Halloween. I’m certainly not winning any points for originality with this pick. But there’s a reason Curry Barker’s supernatural cautionary tale has become the talk of the horror town this year; it’s just a supremely entertaining ride. Blending spooky moments with dark humor, and one of 2026’s great breakout performances from Inde Navarrette, “Obsession” is worth obsessing over.

Bear (Michael Johnston) is a timid music shop worker, hopelessly infatuated with his colleague and friend, Nikki (Navarrette). When he buys a gift shop trinket that proves to be the real deal, he’s granted his one wish: for Nikki to fall madly in love with him. But this is a “cursed monkey paw” situation, and Bear’s initial delight at scoring the girls of his dreams soon turns into a nightmare when Nikki’s new obsession with Bear turns sinister.

‘Hokum’

“Hokum” was an unfortunate victim of poor timing. It landed in theaters in May, the same month as “Obsession” and “Backrooms,” which sucked up all the attention, leaving “Hokum” largely forgotten. That’s a fate this creepy supernatural horror didn’t deserve. I have a strong stomach for horror, but there’s a spine-chilling 45-minute stretch in “Hokum” that really unnerved me. And that’s a feeling that very few horror movies manage to give me these days.

Ohm Bauman (Adam Scott) is an American author suffering from crippling writer’s block as he attempts to wrap up his successful book series. On a whim, he decides to travel to rural Ireland to scatter his parents’ ashes at the hotel where they honeymooned in their youth. Once in the scenic location, he learns the local legend of a witch said to haunt the hotel’s grand suite, and spookiness ensues. “Hokum” is my top choice if you want a Halloween horror with real scares.

‘Send Help’

“Send Help” sees director Sam Raimi in fine form, crafting a playful horror-thriller that works largely thanks to Rachel McAdams’ excellent performance. It’s a strong pick this Halloween if you want a movie with horror elements, but also plenty of dark thriller DNA. It also plays with audiences' expectations in novel ways, asking viewers to question who the real villain is. It does lose steam in the middle, but Raimi brings it home in style with a great ending.

Linda Liddle (McAdams) is a hard worker, but struggles with playing the corporate schmoozing game. She’s long promised a promotion, which is then cruelly taken away by her new boss, the arrogant nepobaby Bradley Preston (Dylan O’Brien). When the two are stranded on a tropical island after a plane crash, their dynamic is flipped. Linda thrives on the island, while Bradley does little but whine. With no rescue in sight, tensions flare fast.

‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’

Jane Schoenbrun’s 2024 horror “I Saw the TV Glow” was a true genre gem, and while the director’s follow-up “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” didn’t quite have the same impact on me, it’s still an absorbing watch with plenty to unwrap. I particularly enjoyed its commentary on the nature of modern horror reboots. It’s less successful in its second half as it slides further and further into the surreal. However, it’s one of the year’s most interesting movies, a marriage of pulpy slasher tropes and softly-lit romanticism.

Kris Williams (Hannah Einbinder) is a young filmmaker hired to reboot the “Camp Miasma” franchise, a once-celebrated slasher series that’s now a punchline after years of subpar direct-to-DVD sequels. Her pitch involves casting Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson), the star of the first “Camp Miasma,” who is now a recluse living in the abandoned camp where the films were shot. Kris heads to Billy’s home to convince the retired actress to reprise her role, and quickly falls under her spell as the two tumble into a surreal world of blood and lust.

We can connect with the characters on a personal level, which is part of what made the original "Top Gun" movies so beloved. And speaking of the original, this movie has some great throwbacks, so if you're a longtime fan of the franchise, you'll find something to love in "Maverick." 'The Breadwinner' (2026)

This is one of those fun movies that makes you feel the awkwardness the characters go through while you laugh at the ridiculous situations they find themselves in. Written by and starring American stand-up comic Nate Bargatze, the film was not well received by critics. But I actually think it's pretty good if you can look past some of the flaws. If nothing else, it will make you laugh the whole time.

And the people agree with me, as the movie has an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes from viewers. I guess when you decide whether to watch "The Breadwinner," you'll need to figure out whether your tastes align more with critics or regular viewers. Anyone who's ever had to suddenly take over at home can relate to main character Nate as he finds out that being the head of the household is much tougher than he ever imagined.

'Knock at the Cabin' (2023)

If you love darker thrillers and want something to add to your spooky season watchlist (it is the first week of October, after all), you should stream “Knock at the Cabin” now that it’s on Netflix and cracking the top 10 What starts as a nice trip for Eric (Jonathan Groff) and Andrew (Ben Aldridge), and their young daughter Wen (Kristen Cui) turns terrifying as a stranger named Leonard (Dave Bautista) arrives at the door, accompanied by three armed visitors.

From renowned M. Night Shyamalan, you know it's a movie that will keep you guessing about what's really going on. Shyamalan's films tend to have some serious plot twists, so I always go into one trying to spot clues and tells for what's to come. It's not as much of a horror movie as it seems, but it has enough creepy, unsettling elements to keep horror fans engaged.

A new month means plenty of new programming to watch on Paramount+. Some of the streamer's biggest premieres, like "Tracker" season 4 and "Avatar: Seven Havens" don't come out until next week, but September was such a packed calendar that there are still plenty of new shows to binge-watch this weekend. Genre: Crime drama series

What's it about? Guy Ritchie's hit crime drama "MobLand" centers on the Harrigan crime family, a gang of drug lords helmed by patriarch Conrad (Pierce Brosnan), matriarch Maeve (Helen Mirren) and Conrad's second son Kevin (Paddy Considine). Their crumbling crime empire is hanging on by a thread as the family's razor-sharp fixer, Harry (Tom Hardy) cleans up their messes, including a bloody gang war in season 1. In season 2, as rivals close in on their fractured syndicate, the family struggles to show a unified front while violence spills into every corner of their lives.

Why you should watch it: After "MobLand" season 1's stunning finale, this next batch of episodes started on a high note with a bloody season 2 premiere. New episodes come out every Friday through November 20, so you still have plenty of time to catch up on the show's most twisted season yet.

'Sacrifice' season 2

Genre: Legal thriller

What it's about: “Sacrifice” follows Daniella Hernandez (Paula Patton), a high-powered entertainment lawyer navigating the unruly lives of Hollywood's rich and famous while wrangling her own personal demons and trying to solve her parents' murder. Season 2 opens with her trying to rebuild after almost every part of her life has fallen apart. Her relationship with fellow lawyer and BET shooting survivor Dom Mayfield (Juan Antonio) becomes public just as her nemesis Beverly Rucker (Erica Ash) launches a mayoral campaign. New threats also complicate Daniella’s plans, and new leads threaten to blow her parents' case wide open.

Why you should watch it: This series is a compelling option for anyone seeking a glossy legal drama filled with high-stakes cases, messy relationships, and family drama. Paula Patton delivers a powerful performance in the lead role, while Season 2 broadens the narrative with new professional challenges throughout its 10-episode run.

'Teams Moms: Baseball'

Genre: Reality sports show

What's it about? Pushy sports parents get their own reality TV show (with none other than basketball mom Kim Kardashian attached as executive producer) in "Team Moms: Baseball." The show follows a group of parents whose sons attend Legendary Prep Academy, an elite baseball training school in Arizona that demands a truly grueling level of commitment for the microscopic chance of one day going pro. But the grind of youth sports takes backstage to the real drama: middle-aged parents living vicariously through their kids' successes and growing more and more belligerent as the White Claws flow.

Why you should watch it: In addition to the Kardashian stamp of approval, this show comes courtesy of the makers of "Love Island" (ITV America), a match made in reality TV heaven. It seems tailormade for some mindless fun to put on in the background this weekend.

October kicked off this week, and a new month always brings plenty of new movies to watch across the best streaming services. It's spooky season, so as always there's plenty of horror movies to add to your watchlist, including the latest blood-curdling entry in the "Evil Dead" franchise, "Evil Dead Burn," on HBO Max as well as one of my favorite horror movies of all time, Ari Aster's "Midsommar," on Hulu. "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma," a cerebral and saucy cross between a campy horror movie and queer awakening, is also now on Mubi.

If you're looking for something more family friendly, I can't recommend "Coyote vs. Acme," now out on PVOD platforms, enough. It feels like a modern day "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," and the David vs. Goliath legal battle at the heart of the movie takes on a whole new layer given the production it went through to even get a release. Over on Netflix, you can catch Tyler Perry's latest drama, "Doing Life, for an emotional pick-me-up this weekend.

So without further ado, let's dive into everything new on streaming this weekend.

‘Tyler Perry’s Doing Life’ (Netflix)

Tyler Perry movies and Netflix subscribers go together like peanut butter and jelly, so I have no doubt his latest will shoot to the top of the Netflix top 10. Naomi Baker stars as Anika, a single mother and correctional officer, is struggling to keep her life on track when she reconnects with Carousel (Jay Reeves), a reformed ex-con with untapped talents who once saved her during a prison riot.

Sparks fly, things get messy, and it hits all the melodramatic beats you'd expect from one of his tearjearkers: an unlikely romance, redemption, family drama and a second chance at love. "Doing Life" may not exactly be catnip for critics, but if Perry's track record on Netflix is any indication, this one seems tailormade to make a cozy weekend afternoon fly by.

‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ (Mubi)

One of the horniest movies I've seen in years, "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma" (please use its full government name, thank you) is now streaming on Mubi, and I can't rave about this movie enough. I've been a Jane Schoenbrun fan since 2021's "We're All Going to the World's Fair," and was over the moon when "I Saw The TV Glow" gained them a huge following. Now, they're back with this saucy (and I mean that literally) horror movie that's a surreal and campy exploration of how pop culture defines us in the age of being terminally online.

After years of increasingly disappointing sequels, the Camp Miasma slasher franchise gets a chance at a comeback from young filmmaker Kris Williams (Hannah Einbinder). She tracks down Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson), the reclusive star of the original movie, who now lives at the abandoned camp where it was filmed, to try to scrounge up some inspiration. But when Kris finally finds her, her professional fascination with the former star quickly devolves into a lust-filled evening, attracting the attention of the series' iconic serial killer, Little Death.

‘Coyote vs. Acme’ (PVOD)

After three years in limbo, "Coyote vs. Acme" finally saw the light of day this year, and now it's available to buy or rent after grossing an impressive $110 million at the box office. Combining live-action and animation a la "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," it follows the iconic Looney Tunes character in a legal battle after products from ACME, the in-universe manufacturer of all sorts of dangerous items, from anvils to bombs, that always backfire and foil his machinations to catch the Roadrunner, fail Wile E. Coyote one too many times.

He decides to hire a billboard lawyer (Will Forte) to take Acme Corporation to court and soon it comes to light that their line of products may be faulty by design. It's an underdog story that takes on new meaning in light of the drama surrounding its release. Critics are loving it, if its 96% on Rotten Tomatoes is anything to go by. I found it absolutely delightful, and encourage any animation fans to check it out now that you can stream it from home!

'Midsommar' (Hulu)

One of my all-time favorite horror movies, "Midsommar" is a disturbing descent into the dangers of groupthink that let cults thrive. What makes the movie so effective is how dramatically it breaks from the usual horror aesthetic, taking place almost entirely in a picturesque meadow under the bright Swedish summer sun.

The movie follows Dani (Florence Pugh), a grieving American student who travels to a remote Swedish village with her boyfriend and his friends to experience a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival. At first, the secluded community seems welcoming, and its unusual traditions intrigue more than frighten. But as the festivities continue, the ceremonies take a bloody turn, and members of the group begin disappearing. Before long, Dani and the others uncover the horrifying reality behind the village's rituals and realize they've stumbled into something they may not be able to escape.

'Evil Dead Burn' (HBO Max)

It's officially spooky season, and that means plenty of new horror movies are landing across the best streaming services. HBO Max just got the latest entry in the “Evil Dead” franchise, “Evil Dead Burn,” and it may just be the most gruesome installment yet. But if you can handle plenty of fake blood and stomach-churning gore, it’s a fitting pick for the season.

After the death of her abusive husband, Alice (Souheila Yacoub), reunites with estranged in-laws to mourn. But their grief quickly turns into a nightmare when a demon begins possessing and killing the family in search of an ancient dagger. Unlike earlier entries in the franchise, “Evil Dead Burn” largely trades its trademark dark humor for a more twisted and disturbing approach.

Fresh off a Palme d’Or win at Cannes, “Fjord” arrived at the Toronto International Film Festival as one of the buzziest titles in the lineup. Directed by Cristian Mungiu, the Nordic drama starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve promises an even-handed look at what happens when the devout and a secular society fail to appreciate one another's perspectives. But over the course of its runtime, it quickly becomes clear that Mungiu has his hand on the scale.

When the Gheorghiu family uproots their lives from Romania to Norway, it’s anything but a smooth transition. While Lisbet (Reinsve) is a native Norwegian, their rigid religious practices make them an immediate object of curiosity in their small seaside town. Although many locals are welcoming, their conservative beliefs are an uneasy fit for the secular community around them.

Things come to a head when school officials suspect that the Gheorghiu family — particularly the severe, old-fashioned Mihal (Stan) — may be abusing their children. Authorities move swiftly, taking the five minors into protective custody while an investigation pends. The parents are left bereft and helpless in the face of a government system that doesn't understand them, setting the stage for an intense culture clash.

'Fjord' sacrifices nuance in exploring heavy-handed themes

Mungiu may be attempting to foster a balanced conversation about the push and pull between religious and secular worlds — how both sides believe they have all the answers yet remain equally misguided. “Fjord” tries to make the point that well-intentioned social programs can overreach and harm the very people they are designed to protect.

Instead, the Norwegian social workers are written so robotically that the film ends up reading like fundamentalist propaganda about out-of-control liberals tearing children away from god-fearing Christians. The premise itself isn't without merit — we could all stand to examine our own prejudices — but “Fjord” is steeped in bad faith arguments. Are we really being asked to vilify child protection workers? Beyond a charitable reading warning against bureaucratic overreach, the central narrative plays directly into half a dozen troubling right-wing talking points designed to eliminate government oversight.

Verdict: A frustrating drama that wastes its potential

The performances of Stan and Reinsve are undeniably compelling, but almost to the detriment of everyone else. They suck up all the oxygen in the room, leaving the other characters underdeveloped, particularly the children, who could have made this entire narrative much more nuanced and interesting.

This almost feels like an attempt on the director's part to manufacture an atmosphere of ambiguity. Are the parents actually abusive, or do they just hail from a culture where striking children for neglecting religious studies is acceptable? Are the kids brainwashed, or following their faith of their own accord? We are supposed to question these things, but the lack of character development makes emotional investment nearly impossible. The supporting characters don’t feel like real people, just empty pages waiting to be written on.

In spite of everything, it’s hard not to feel for these parents as they navigate an unforgiving system and feel utterly helpless to win their children back. However, "Fjord" ultimately sabotages its own potential. The film would have been far more effective if it hadn’t set up a strawman for the parents to fight against by turning the social workers into the outright villains of the piece.

To help you figure out where to start, every month I turn to the review site Rotten Tomatoes and find the recently added Netflix movies with the highest critical scores. While a high RT rating isn’t a guarantee a movie will appeal to your specific taste, it’s a useful indicator if you’re on the hunt for a film that is broadly considered high-quality.

Before diving into October’s top five, here are a few rules you should know: Netflix originals that haven’t been released yet are excluded (they don’t have an RT score yet), and in the event of a tie, I’ve used RT’s viewer rating to break the deadlock. Now that’s cleared up, here are the 5 movies added to Netflix in October 2026 with the highest scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

5. 'Dallas Buyers Club' (2013)

In the 2000s, Matthew McConaughey was known for starring in subpar rom-coms. After a two-year hiatus, he returned with a focus on more prestigious dramatic roles. This was dubbed the “McConaissance,” and it culminated in “Dallas Buyers Club,” an acclaimed biographical drama that saw McConaughey win an Oscar for his role as Ron Woodroof. On the same night, Jared Leto also took home an Oscar for his supporting performance.

Based on real events, Ron is a salt-of-the-earth type Texan whose life changes in an instant when he’s diagnosed with AIDS and given just 30 days to live. Ostracized by his friends and family due to the homophobic stigma surrounding AIDS at the time, he is left in a dire situation. Refusing to give up, he begins smuggling unapproved drugs into the U.S. to treat his condition. He also starts assisting his fellow AIDS patients who are in a similarly life-threatening condition.

4. 'The Bourne Ultimatum' (2002)

Netflix has added the complete Jason Bourne franchise in October, and while the most recent Bourne movie, simply titled “Jason Bourne,” was a dud, the original trilogy, comprised of “The Bourne Identity,” “Supremacy” and “Ultimatum,” makes for perfect marathon material. 2002’s “Identity” should be your starting point if you’re new to the series, but to date, trilogy capper “The Bourne Ultimatum” scores the highest with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Following the events of “The Bourne Supremacy,” Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) continues his quest to unravel his past. His hunt for answers takes him all over the globe, with Bourne traveling to Europe, Russia, Africa, and back to the United States. With shadowy government agencies on his tail, he has to stay one step ahead of his enemies. It’s a thrilling trilogy capper that delivers adrenaline-spiking action and answers some big questions.

3. 'Call Me by Your Name' (2017)

“Call Me by Your Name” was the breakthrough role for one Timothée Chalamet. His role in this Luca Guadagnino romantic drama forced the movie world to take notice and earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination to boot. Almost a decade later, Chalamet has gone on to greater heights, but his performance here still ranks among his very best, and the rest of the film is also phenomenal, with strong direction from Guadagnino and a picturesque setting.

Set over a sun-soaked season in 1980s Italy, 17-year-old Elio (Chalmaet) experiences a transformational summer when his father’s 24-year-old assistant, Oliver (Armie Hammer), comes to stay. The pair's friendship quickly blossoms into a passionate affair, and while both know their romance can’t last beyond the summer, it has a profound impact on them. It’s a deeply intimate portrayal of first love that unfolds with a tender heart and youthful optimism.

2. 'Psycho' (1960)

“Psycho” is one of those movies that really doesn’t need an introduction. Alongside “Rear Window,” it’s Alfred Hitchcock’s most recognizable movie, which is saying something because his body of work is overflowing with classics. Now that Spooky Season has arrived, there’s no better time of year to switch off all the lights and (re)watch this intense horror that continues to influence the genre to this day. Just don’t get the twist spoiled before you do.

Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) steals $40,000 from her employer and plans to run away with her lover Sam (John Gavin). On the road, she stops at the Bates Motel and encounters the shabby establishment's meek owner, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), whose domineering mother clearly runs the place. The next morning, Marion is reported missing, so her sister Lily Crane (Vera Miles) heads to the motel to investigate.

1. ‘Moonlight’ (2016)

It’s not a surprise to see “Moonlight” topping this list. Critics fawned over the film upon release, and in the decade since, its reputation hasn’t diminished. It’s regularly cited as one of the best movies of the past decade, including by your truly in my own roundup last fall. Winner of Best Picture at the 89th Oscars — yes, that was the year with the infamous “La La Land” snafu — it’s a powerful picture that neatly leaps between tragic and tender on a dime.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Barry Jenkins, “Moonlight” follows the childhood, adolescence and early adulthood of Chiron, played by three actors across the movie’s three chapters: Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders and Alex Hibbert. The drama covers his youth, growing up in Miami, his relationship with a drug dealer/father figure, Juan (Mahershala Ali), and his attempts to understand his sexuality. It’s a poignant masterwork.

Luckily for you, the streaming service regularly gives its extensive movie library a refresh and October 2026 has been no exception, with everything from crowd-pleasing comedies ("Bring It On," "The Devil Wears Prada") to Oscar-winning dramas ("Moonlight," "Heat").

But, unsurprisingly, the heftiest genre this month is horror, what with Halloween just a few short weeks away. And if you're wanting to kick off October with a spooky, spine-chilling start, we've got three great freaky flicks that will help you do just that, from a tried-and-true Hitchcock slasher classic to a Guillermo del Toro-directed gothic romance.

Chills and thrills await, so let's delay no longer: Here are three new-to-Netflix movies that are worth adding to your weekend watchlist.

'I Know What You Did Last Summer'

The 2025 Madelyn Cline-starring remake is also on the Netflix platform, but there's something almost wholesome — you know, in a murder-y way — about the late-90s original, starring era icons Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr and Ryan Phillippe as four high-school friends who accidentally hit a man with their car and dump his body off a cliff, only to be stalked and murdered by a hook-wielding fisherman exactly one year later.

Operating in a similarly cheeky (albeit less successful) meta-vein as "Scream" — not a surprise given both films share the same screenwriter, Kevin Williamson — "I Know What You Did Last Summer" began as a revival of the teen slasher genre of the 1970s but now is a throwback in and of itself, a genuinely scary relic where the only things needed to freak you out were a masked man and a big knife, before high-tech, social media, and artificial intelligence started to complicate the horror form.

'Crimson Peak'

Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is a master of all things gothic and ghoulish, from "Cronos" to "Pan's Labyrinth" to last year's "Frankenstein." And this visually stunning 2015 number is one of the director's best and most underrated.

Equal parts ghost story and tragic romance, "Crimson Peak" stars Mia Wasikowska as Edith Cushing, an American heiress in Victorian-era Buffalo, New York, who falls for a seductive British baronet named Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston). The couple moves into Allerdale Hall, his family's crumbling, creepily isolated home, where Edith discovers sinister secrets about her new husband and his cold, possessive sister, Lady Lucille (Jessica Chastain). Charlie Hunnam, Jim Beaver, Burn Gorman, Leslie Hope, Jonathan Hyde and Doug Jones also star.

'Psycho'

Is it truly spooky season without some Alfred Hitchcock? As part of the big wave of horror titles arriving on Netflix this October, Hitchcock's suspenseful 1960 masterpiece "Psycho" is now available to stream, along with its sequels, 1983's "Psycho II" by Richard Franklin and 1986's "Psycho III" directed by O.G. franchise star Anthony Perkins.

If you haven't watched "Psycho" yet, the black-and-white horror classic centers on Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a Phoenix real estate secretary who embezzles $40,000 in stolen checks from her employer's client and then goes on the run. She checks into an isolated motel run by a shy young man named Norman Bates (the aforementioned Perkins), who lives in a large house nearby with his overbearing mother. Soon, that disturbed parental dynamic makes for a very dangerous stay for Marion.

‘Tyler Perry’s Doing Life’ (2026) (Netflix)

Genre: Romantic drama movie

What it's about: “Tyler Perry’s Doing Life” follows Anika (Naomi Baker), a single mother and former prison officer, who reconnects with Carousel (Jay Reeves), a reformed ex-convict who once saved her during a prison riot. As the pair develop an unexpected relationship, they face resistance from those around them while trying to build a new life together.

Why you should watch it: This film is worth watching for its emotional performances, particularly from Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves. Tyler Perry writes and directs, while the supporting cast adds plenty of familiar faces. ‘Evil Dead Burn’ (2026) (HBO Max)

Genre: Horror movie

What it's about: Alice (Souheila Yacoub) is a grieving widow who travels to her in-laws’ secluded home after her husband’s death. But the family reunion takes a horrifying turn when demonic forces possess them one by one, transforming the house into a blood-soaked fight for survival against an increasingly terrifying Deadite threat.

Why you should watch it: If you’re after horror that goes all-in on blood, gore and nasty practical effects, “Evil Dead Burn” should be on your Halloween watchlist. Sébastien Vaniček delivers several inventive, wince-inducing set pieces, while Souheila Yacoub leads a committed cast. It’s a particularly brutal entry for fans who like their horror seriously gruesome.

‘Coven Academy’ (series premiere) (Hulu)

Genre: Supernatural teen drama series

What it's about: Three teenage witches and their warlock classmates are at an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans. As they learn to control their powers, the students become caught up in ancient supernatural conflicts, dangerous secrets and forbidden romances, forcing them to protect their city while navigating the challenges of growing up.

Why you should watch it: “Coven Academy” offers a fast-paced supernatural mystery with witches, vampires, romance and plenty of secrets. Its short, bingeable chapters make it easy to fly through, while the New Orleans setting gives the series a suitably spooky atmosphere. Fans of “Wednesday,” “Charmed” and “The Vampire Diaries” may find plenty to enjoy.

'Miss Scarlet' Season 1 (2021)

What it's about: If you need a break from all the Halloween bloodshed, this Victorian mystery is the perfect antidote. Originally titled "Miss Scarlet and the Duke," this PBS Masterpiece series follows Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips), who, after her father's death leaves her broke and unmarried in 1880s London, takes over his struggling detective agency. To keep it running, she partners with her late father's friend, Scotland Yard's Detective Inspector William "The Duke" Wellington (Stuart Martin), and the two tackle crimes together.

Why you should watch it: Created by Rachael New, "Miss Scarlet" holds a strong 88% on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season and has built a devoted following for good reason. Kate Phillips ("Peaky Blinders") is a very likable lead, and the will-they-won't-they chemistry between her and Stuart Martin gives the mysteries a little something extra. If you love Victorian-era shenanigans, you'll love this.

'Scream Queens' seasons 1 and 2 (2015)

What it's about: This two-season horror-comedy anthology drops you first into the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority at Wallace University, where a serial killer in a Red Devil costume starts picking off students. Vicious queen bee Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts) and no-nonsense Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) at the center of the chaos, flanked by "the Chanels," Oberlin's dim-witted lackeys, and her man of the hour. Season 2 moves the mayhem to a hospital stalked by a new killer, starring John Stamos and Taylor Lautner for some zany and irreverent fun perfect for Halloween.

'Chucky' seasons 1-3 (2021)

What it's about: Plenty of horror icons have made the jump from film to television, but few have done it as successfully as this one. The three-season series picks up the "Child's Play" saga when a vintage Good Guy doll is sold at a New Jersey yard sale and ends up in the hands of 14-year-old outcast Jake Wheeler. Before long, gruesome murders start tearing open the secrets and hypocrisies of his sleepy hometown, as Chucky sets his sights on Jake and his friends.

Why you should watch it: Created by franchise mastermind Don Mancini, "Chucky" is proof the killer doll works just as well on the small screen. Brad Dourif returns to voice the foul-mouthed Chucky, with Jennifer Tilly doing a fantastic job in her role as his partner-in-crime Tiffany. It's bloody, funny and surprisingly heartfelt, which feels a little confusing, but hey, sure!

"Saturday Night Live" is back for season 52, and while Chloe Fineman has left the show, there is lots of new talent on the roster plus familiar faces like Colin Jost and Kenan Thompson.

It's surely just a matter of time before the Rams and Eagles find their groove, but their tribulations have made for fascinating viewing. The preseason favorites blew a 16-0 lead against the Broncos last weekend and are looking a little threadbare with their game-breakers sidelined, while Philly haven't looked right all season, either on offense or defense. Even then, nobody was expecting them to get pasted by the Bears' third-string QB. Both sides need this.

Jaguars at Bengals

• Sunday, 1 p.m. ET, CBS/Paramount+

A prove-it game that could also turn into a shootout, the Jaguars vs Bengals is arguably the pick of Week 4 slate. For all of Jacksonville's excellence so far, they're yet to face a team of Cincinnati's caliber. Cincy, meanwhile, had looked as if they'd addressed all of their defensive issues — and then last weekend happened. The Bengals are going to be tested by Bayshul Tuten, one of this season's standout RBs. However, Joe Burrow's record against Trevor Lawrence is a perfect 3-0, and he'll be playing angry this weekend.

Chiefs at Raiders

• Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET, CBS/Paramount+
• FREE on TVNZ+ (New Zealand)

Only three AFC teams are still undefeated, and two of them are meeting at Allegiant Stadium. The Chiefs, to the annoyance of neutrals, look back to their best already thanks to the dual-threat of Patrick Mahomes and Kenneth Walker, whereas the Raiders have taken everyone by surprise. Kirk Cousins has thrown three touchdowns in all three games and the Las Vegas defense has forced nine turnovers, but here's where their schedule switches from easy mode to hard.

Robert Pattinson is having a wildly busy year, and he's capping it off by disappearing into one of the most recognizable faces in true crime TV. In "Primetime," the actor plays Chris Hansen, the host of "To Catch a Predator," in an A24 thriller that pulls back the curtain on one of the most infamous segments in television history.

Directed by Lance Oppenheim in his narrative feature debut, the film is set in 2006 and follows Hansen as he sets out to make TV history with his "Dateline NBC" sting operation. Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Anna Faris and Bokeem Woodbine co-star in this drama, which is playing in theaters right now. But how long will it be before you can watch it from the comfort of your own couch?

Since it just hit theaters, "Primetime" isn't going to be available on any of the best streaming services just yet. Here's the good news, though: Based on A24's recent release patterns, we can make a solid guess about when you'll be able to rent, buy, and stream it at home.

When can we expect 'Primetime' to arrive on streaming?

A24 tends to move its films to digital fairly quickly. In fact, we see the studio sending many of its theatrical releases to premium video-on-demand (PVOD) about a month after they open, at which point you can rent or buy them on platforms like Amazon and Apple TV.

Counting forward from the September 25 opening date, that points to a digital release for "Primetime" sometime in late October or early November 2026.

As for physical media, that'll be a different timeframe. These releases typically follow a few weeks later. A24 tends to give its films a 4K UHD and Blu-ray release within a couple of months of the theatrical debut, so a disc drop around mid-December seems likely, though nothing's been confirmed just yet.

As for streaming it with a subscription, "Primetime" has a guaranteed home on HBO Max, thanks to A24's multi-year exclusive deal with the platform, which makes it the first streaming stop for the studio's theatrical films.

Based on how other recent A24 titles have rolled out, the studio's movies usually reach HBO Max about three to four months after their theatrical release, which would land "Primetime" on HBO Max sometime in January 2027.

That date could shift depending on how the film performs, but early in the new year is a reasonable window to circle. For now, catching Pattinson's unsettling turn as Chris Hansen means a trip to the theater.

A new month means plenty of exciting titles new on Paramount+, and that includes a slew of great movies worth adding to your watchlist. While it might not make our list of the best streaming services, Paramount's solid library is still well worth checking out for your next movie night.

Case in point, Paramount+ just added three heavy hitters that deserve a spot on your watchlist this weekend. That includes the Oscar-winning drama "Parasite" that more than lives up to all the hype it got; the sweeping epic "Troy" starring Orlando Bloom, Brad Pitt, and the rest of its star-studded cast; and "It Follows," a modern horror masterpiece that's the perfect way to kick off spooky season.

'Parasite' (2019)

Director Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" made history at the 2020 Academy Awards when it became the first Korean film to win an Oscar and the first non-English-language movie to take home Best Picture. Now that it's streaming on Paramount Plus, there's never been a better time to revisit this modern classic or finally see what all the hype was about if you missed it the first time around.

"Parasite" follows the clever but struggling Kim family who catch a lucky break when Kim Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik) lands a job tutoring the daughter of the wealthy but sheltered Park family. His sister Ki-jung (Park So-dam) forges a university diploma to help him get the position, but once inside the lavish Park household, the Kims hatch a plan to get all of them on the family's payroll.

'Troy' (2004)

In the lead-up to Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," I revisited a childhood favorite that captures a lot of the same old Hollywood magic in another swords-and-sandals epic. Based on Homer’s epic poem “The Iliad,” “Troy” is a sweeping cinematic take on the legendary Trojan War between the Achaeans and the city of Troy. The conflict kicks off when Trojan Prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) falls for Helen (Diane Kruger), the wife of Spartan King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson).

After the pair elope, Menelaus’ brother declares war on Troy, setting the stage for a brutal, years-long siege. At the center of all the bloodshed are Hector (Eric Bana) and Achilles (Brad Pitt), two legendary warriors leading armies and seeking glory on the battlefield. And yes, the famous Trojan Horse makes an appearance, too.

'It Follows' (2015)

Another modern classic, "It Follows" is a sharp and haunting horror movie that I find myself returning to every spooky season. Maika Monroe stars as Jay, a young woman who finds herself being stalked by a terrifying supernatural entity after hooking up with a guy. The entity can take the form of anyone, but there’s one constant: It will follow you to the ends of the Earth.

The only way to escape the curse along is to have sex with someone else to give the entity a new target. As Jay and her friends scramble to find a way to break the curse without dooming someone else, paranoia gets its hooks in them. Its slow-burn tension and ever-present sense that anyone could be a threat make “It Follows” the kind of movie that’ll have you obsessively scanning the background and hiding behind your hands at anyone who draws near.

It's official, folks: We've entered sweater weather and, simultaneously, prime binge-watching season. Because when it starts getting crisp and cool outdoors, there's nothing better than to cozy up indoors with a great new show that'll have you clicking "Play" over and over again.

Thankfully, Netflix always has something fresh and buzzy to watch and this weekend poses new exceptions: The streaming service's already massive library got a big boost of new TV titles with the start of October 2026, including a highly anticipated literary adaptation, the final season of a beloved fantasy-drama, and more.

If you're a John Steinbeck fan, you've no doubt had Netflix's new "East of Eden" adaptation on your radar; the Zoe Kazan-penned miniseries features a starry cast including Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist. There's also a new Tamil rom-com series "#Love," about rival dating-app founders, as well as the fourth and final season of the Andie MacDowell-led time-travel drama "The Way Home."

If you’re on the hunt for something new to settle down with this weekend, these three Netflix shows are worth checking out.

'East of Eden'

Oscar-nominated Florence Pugh is the enigmatic and manipulative antihero Cathy Ames in this new adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel of the same name, given the TV miniseries treatment by screenwriter Zoe Kazan. (Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the famed 1955 film version starring James Dean.)

As with Steinbeck's book, the ambitious seven-part drama explores the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, particularly the complicated dynamic between half-brothers Adam (Christopher Abbott) and Charles (Mike Faist) upon Cathy's arrival into their lives.

The stacked cast also includes Hoon Lee as Lee, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Joseph Zada as Cal and Joe Anders as Aron.

'#Love'

We're suckers for a good enemies-to-lovers rom-com, and this new Tamil romance plays right into that delicious genre trope.

Aishwarya Lekshmi (as Tara) and Arjun Das (as Matthew) are the founders of rival dating apps—she believes in data-based compatibility, while he believes in good old-fashioned chemistry. The tech-y twosome decide to test their opposing matchmaking theories with a high-stakes 60-day challenge to prove exactly whose philosophy on modern love actually works

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Balaji Mohan, the series is "a fresh take on connection in a digital world, tackling friendship, family, ambition, and the eternal chaos of figuring yourself out," per Netflix.

'The Way Home' season 4

After four seasons, Hallmark Original "The Way Home" has come to an end, and if you missed out on that big, bittersweet finale when it aired this past June, Netflix is getting the full final season on October 1 for you to catch up.

The gist of the show? It's a multi-generational family drama following three women of the Landry family—Andie MacDowell's Del, Chyler Leigh's Kat and Sadie Laflamme-Snow's Alice—who reunite at their farm in Port Haven and discover a mysterious pond that acts as a time-travel portal to the 1970s and 1990s, letting them learn important lessons about their family's past along the way.

The fourth season stretches back even further, pulling the gals back into the Roaring Twenties as they're navigating new beginnings in the present.

October is here, which means spooky season is officially underway. There are plenty of options, both scary and not, for what to watch this weekend across Netflix, HBO Max and other streaming services, plus broadcast and cable.

Fall TV brings “Marshals” season 2, a lavish new adaptation of “East of Eden” and more workplace chaos in “Scrubs” season 2. On the movie side, “Tyler Perry's Doing Life” brings some serious drama, while “Coyote vs. Acme” finally gives Wile E. Coyote his long-awaited shot at justice. So settle in, embrace the October vibes and let someone else do the scrolling for a change. Here’s my weekend watchlist, ranked by must-watch factor.

1. ‘East of Eden’ (Netflix)

What it's about: Zoe Kazan’s sweeping adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel puts Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames at the center of the family saga. As Cathy’s life becomes tangled up with brothers Adam (Christopher Abbott) and Charles Trask (Mike Faist), their choices ripple into the next generation, including twins Cal (Joseph Zada) and Aron (Joe Anders).
Why it’s worth your time: Kazan has a particularly juicy connection to the material: Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 James Dean movie. But this is her chance to tell the whole story, not just the slice that made it to the big screen.

2. ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ (digital)

What it's about: After decades of getting blown up, flattened and crushed by Acme products, Wile E. Coyote has finally had enough. He hires billboard accident lawyer Kevin Avery (Will Forte) to sue the corporation responsible for his many cartoon catastrophes, putting the pair up against Acme's slick attorney (John Cena).
Why it's worth your time:The real-life story behind “Coyote vs. Acme” is almost as wild as the movie: Warner Bros. shelved the nearly-finished film for a tax write-off; after a fan uproar, they eventually sold it to Ketchup Entertainment. Then the movie became a hit, both commercially and critically. Now that's a funny joke.

3. ‘Marshals’ season 2 (CBS)

Genre: Western crime drama
Release date: Episode 1 on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 8:30 p.m. ET (about 45 min)
What it's about: Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) has traded the Yellowstone Ranch for a badge, but apparently nobody told his family that his new job was supposed to be less dangerous. When his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) is taken hostage, Kayce goes rogue to get him back, while his fellow marshals investigate a criminal operation connected to the East Camp land grab.
Why it's worth your time: If "Yellowstone" left you craving more Dutton drama with a side of federal law enforcement, "Marshals" remains happy to oblige. Season 2 brings back Kayce's team, continues the fallout from that brutal first-season finale and even welcomes "Yellowstone" favorite Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White) back into the fold.

4. ‘War’ (HBO)

Genre: Legal drama
Available now: 1 episode (about 1 hour)
What it's about: Divorce is messy enough without two of London’s fanciest law firms turning it into a blood sport. When movie star Carla Duval (Sienna Miller) splits from tech billionaire Morgan Henderson (Dominic West), Taylor & Byrne and Cathcarts & Sons go to war over the very lucrative fallout. Meanwhile, ambitious young lawyer Johnny Warren (Archie Renaux) gets pulled into the fray.
Why it's worth your time: Watching rich people behaving badly? Don't threaten me with a good time. The stacked British cast brings plenty of bite, while creator George Kay packs the drama with backstabbing, class tension and enough legal maneuvering to make a prenup feel like a thriller.
Where to watch: HBO and HBO Max

5. ‘Scrubs’ season 2 (ABC)

Genre: Medical comedy
Available now: 2 episodes (about 22 min each)
What it’s about: J.D., Turk and Elliot have gone from Sacred Heart’s frazzled newbies to the doctors everyone else is supposed to learn from, which is funny considering they’re still figuring out plenty themselves. J.D. tries to help Dr. Cox through a rough patch, Elliot gets tangled up with ex Sean (Scott Foley), and new doctor Sam Tosh gets career advice from Tamera Mowry-Housley’s pediatrician, Dr. Steffie.
Why it’s worth your time: The revival has found its footing, giving the original trio room to be the lovable disasters we remember while letting the newer generation step into the spotlight. Scott Foley’s return as Sean adds some delicious romantic complications.
Where to watch: Hulu

6. ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ (Mubi)

Genre: Surrealist horror romance
Runtime: 1h 52 min
What it's about: After years of increasingly lousy sequels, the Camp Miasma slasher franchise gets a shot at resurrection from young filmmaker Kris Williams (Hannah Einbinder). Her big idea? Bring back Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson), the reclusive star of the original movie, who now lives at the abandoned camp where it was filmed. But when Kris tracks her down, her professional obsession quickly becomes something much more intimate.
Why it's worth your time: If “Sunset Boulevard” and “Friday the 13th” somehow had a very strange, very horny baby, it might look something like this. Jane Schoenbrun follows “I Saw the TV Glow” with another campy, surreal meditation on how pop culture gets under our skin, only this time with a lot of blood.
Where to watch: Mubi

7. ‘Tyler Perry’s Doing Life’ (Netflix)

Genre: Romantic drama
Available now: 1h 47m
What it's about: Anika (Naomi Baker), a single mother and correctional officer, is barely keeping her life together when she reconnects with Carousel (Jay Reeves), a reformed ex-con who once saved her life during a prison riot. What starts as a correspondence between two people on opposite sides of the bars slowly turns into something more.
Why it's worth your time: Tyler Perry is back with another Netflix melodrama, and this one has all the ingredients of a classic Perry tearjerker: unlikely romance, redemption, family struggles and people getting a second chance when they least expect it. It may not win over critics, but Perry will surely nab the top spot on Netflix’s movie chart.

8. ‘Get Jiro’ (Adult Swim)

Genre: Adult anime
Release date: Episodes 1-2 on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 12 a.m. ET
What it’s about: In a bloody adaptation of Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose’s graphic novel, chefs rule near-future Los Angeles like crime bosses, and food is the ultimate status symbol. Mysterious sushi chef Jiro (Brian Tee) arrives with vengeance on the menu and gets caught between rival culinary factions.
Why it’s worth your time: Bourdain’s particular brand of food-world cynicism gets a suitably unhinged animated makeover. Think "The Bear" by way of a samurai revenge flick.
Where to watch: Adult Swim and next day on HBO Max

9. ‘The Last First: Winter K2’ (Apple TV)

Genre: Documentary
Runtime: 1h 37min
What it's about: Amir Bar-Lev's documentary follows the 2021 race to become the first team to summit the peak of the world’s second highest mountain during its most brutal season, centering on Icelander John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani father-son climbers Ali and Sajid Sadpara. But they're hardly alone, with Nepali mountaineers, influencer climbers and assorted camera crews all converging on K2.
Why it's worth your time: The climbing footage alone is enough to make your palms sweat, with avalanches, hurricane-force winds and temperatures plunging to around -40C. But this is more than a white-knuckle mountain movie; it digs into who gets the glory in mountaineering, who gets relegated to the role of helping hand, and what happens when an increasingly commercialized sport collides with the human need to be first.

October is easily my favorite time of year. The weather gets colder, the nights get darker, and there’s truly nothing better than settling in with a good horror movie and letting the immaculate Halloween vibes take over. I love this time of year for plenty of reasons, but the excuse to revisit old favorites and discover something new to watch is definitely high on the list.

Thankfully, Netflix has plenty of movies to help get you into the spooky spirit, whether you’re looking for something genuinely terrifying, a tense thriller or a Halloween favorite that’s a little easier to watch with the lights off. So, I’ve rounded up some of the best Halloween movies currently streaming on Netflix, so you can spend less time scrolling and more time watching.

‘Ready or Not’ (2019)

Starting with a horror movie that was such a hit when it was released that it eventually spawned a sequel this year, “Ready or Not” is a great choice for Halloween. It’s one of those movies that manages to be genuinely funny while still delivering plenty of brutal and surprisingly tense moments. I love how it never takes itself too seriously, especially when it comes to the ridiculous behavior of the people hunting Grace. It also gave us Samara Weaving in one of her most memorable roles, cementing her as a modern scream queen.

Grace (Samara Weaving) marries Alex Le Domas (Mark O'Brien), the heir to a wealthy family whose members have an unusual wedding-night tradition. After the ceremony, Grace draws a card from a mysterious game box and is told to play hide-and-seek. She soon discovers that this is no ordinary game, as her new in-laws arm themselves and begin hunting her throughout their sprawling mansion. With the clock ticking toward sunrise, Grace must find a way to escape the estate while Alex attempts to help her. The film also stars Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell.

‘The Witch’ (2015)

If you prefer your Halloween horror on the seriously dark side, “The Witch” is definitely one to add to your watchlist. Written and directed by Robert Eggers in his feature directorial debut, the movie helped put both Eggers and Anya Taylor-Joy on the map. It’s a slow-burning folk horror movie that gets increasingly unsettling as it goes, and it played a big part in the resurgence of this style of horror during the 2010s. I also have to mention the score by Mark Korven, which is genuinely one of the creepiest I’ve heard in a horror movie and somehow makes the whole thing even more disturbing.

Set in 1630s New England, William (Ralph Ineson), his wife Katherine (Kate Dickie) and their five children are banished from their settlement and build a farm beside a remote forest. Their newborn son suddenly disappears while Thomasin (Taylor-Joy) is watching him, leaving the family devastated. Soon, their crops begin to fail, their animals behave strangely and Caleb (Harvey Scrimshaw), Thomasin’s younger brother, vanishes while exploring the woods. When he returns in a disturbing condition, the family becomes increasingly convinced that something supernatural is responsible.
