In the first three seasons, Reacher is drawn into cases because of personal connections, but this season breaks with tradition as he gets involved after witnessing a complete stranger in trouble. But don’t worry, it still has plenty of brutal hand-to-hand combat.

Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is drawn into a dangerous investigation after encountering a distressed woman on a Philadelphia subway. When the encounter ends in tragedy, Reacher begins looking into what happened and soon finds himself caught in a deadly conspiracy. As he digs deeper, he joins forces with people who can help uncover the truth, including Jacob Merrick (Christopher Rodriguez-Marquette), a Philadelphia police officer, and Detective Tamara Green (Sydelle Noel), a cop who starts working with Reacher after realizing he may be onto something.

‘Sterling Point’

Having been knocked off its No. 1 spot by “Reacher,” the mystery drama “Sterling Point” is still very much worth watching if you haven’t already. Created by Megan Park, this young adult series draws from her own youth, including childhood summers spent in Lake Muskoka, Canada. Park wanted to create a grounded drama that avoids the typical tropes surrounding teenage relationships. However, unlike popular YA streaming hits such as “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” “Sterling Point” is an original story created specifically for the screen rather than an adaptation of a book.

Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) lives in New York with her twin brother, Connor (Keen Ruffalo), and their adoptive father. After being rejected from her dream summer program, Annie discovers that she and Connor have inherited a remote island in Canada from their estranged grandfather, whom she was never allowed to meet. She secretly travels to the island, hoping to learn more about him and her family history. When she arrives, she discovers that a girl named Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle) is already staying there and appears to have a connection to Annie’s family.

‘Last Resort’

“Last Resort” is an ambitious military action-thriller and political drama series that’s worth watching if you prefer something a little more intense and claustrophobic. Directed by Martin Campbell, the pilot episode was praised for its blockbuster-level production quality, underwater visual effects and pacing. Although the show was canceled after struggling with network ratings, its creators were given enough notice to craft a definitive series finale, meaning it wraps up with a proper ending rather than leaving viewers with an unresolved cliffhanger.

The crew of the USS Colorado, a U.S. nuclear submarine, receives an order to launch missiles at Pakistan through a communication channel intended for use only if the U.S. has been attacked. Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) refuses to fire without confirmation, and his second-in-command, Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman), backs him. The Colorado is subsequently attacked by another American submarine, leaving the crew stranded and declared enemies of the United States. They take control of a remote island and establish a defensive perimeter while trying to uncover who issued the launch order.

If you're tired of revenge thrillers that follow the same familiar formula, "Is God Is" should be near the top of your watchlist. Aleshea Harris's feature directorial debut is a brutal and stylish tale of righteous anger that feels like "Thelma and Louise" with the dry humor and biting social commentary of "The Boondocks."

It's one of my favorite films of the summer, and has already earned widespread critical acclaim — including a stellar 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, all that praise didn't translate to success at the box office, with "Is God Is" earning $5 million against a $14.8 million budget.

Now that it's streaming on Prime Video as of today (August 19), I'm hoping this gorgeous and thrilling revenge story will finally find its audience. It features an all-Black cast and a Black writer/director, Aleshea Harris, who adapted it from her award-winning play of the same name. That's rare for a major studio release, which is all the more reason why "Is God Is" deserves a spot on your watchlist.

What 'Is God Is' about?

Based on Harris' award-winning stage play, "Is God Is" follows twin sisters Racine (Kara Young) and Anaia (Mallori Johnson), who survived the unimaginable. Their father (Sterling K. Brown) set their mother (Vivica A. Fox) on fire in front of them, and they carry the scars (both mental and physical) to this day.

For as close as they are, the twins couldn't be more differently personality-wise: Racine is the brash one, with burn scars on her arm, while Anaia is the quiet, sensitive twin, with burn scars on her face. After the fire, their childhood was spent jumping from one foster home to another. Now grown up, they receive a letter from their estranged mother, who asks them to visit her on her deathbed.

There, she reveals why she abandoned them, and asks for one last favor: to kill the man who hurt them. The twins set out on a "Kill Bill"-style quest for closure and revenge, culminating in a climax where almost no one makes it out alive.

Some moments you'll see coming, while others will catch you completely off guard. I got genuinely emotional seeing Anaia go from being meek and reluctant to take revenge to finding her footing and standing up to their father by the end. The film also boasts an impressive supporting cast, including Janelle Monáe, Erika Alexander, and Mykelti Williamson.

That 97% Rotten Tomatoes score isn't just based on a handful of reviews. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists 120 critic reviews, with another 1,000 from viewers behind its healthy 86% audience score.

Rotten Tomatoes' critics consensus calls the movie a "blistering revenge thriller with superb directorial confidence by Aleshea Harris." "Few films are as entertaining as they are meaningful, and Is God Is clears that hurdle with intent and purpose," wrote Johhn Serba in a review for Decider.

"Is God Is may borrow from an old narrative formula, but it reframes it into something sharper and more searching," said The Guardian's Andrew Lawrence. "It shows that stories rooted in Black trauma don’t have to be pulled down by it. Vibrancy and texture are what give a killing spree its stakes, after all, and this one ends with an understated affirmation of the human spirit."

Knowing that Harris adapted her own play for the big screen makes the final production even more impressive. Her theatrical background shines through in the movie's svelte style and mesmerizingly composed shots. Although framed as a revenge thriller, Harris’ play is brutally candid about domestic violence and the damage patriarchy inflicts on both women and men. Through "Is God Is," Harris rages against that cycle of violence, first onstage and now in her feature-film debut.

As a 1999 baby, my core movie memories are strictly early 2000s. ‘Ghostbusters’ (1984)

If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, what you gonna watch? “Ghostbusters,” duh. This massive blockbuster and cultural phenomenon was one of the first films to introduce me to the supernatural side of cinema, and watching it at a young age, I loved every second of it. Not only does it feature a hilarious cast delivering some of the most iconic performances, but it’s packed with instantly recognizable scenes, including the moment they defeat the giant marshmallow monster, sending hundreds of gallons of gooey marshmallow raining down.

After losing their research funding, eccentric Columbia University parapsychologists Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) decide to start their own ghost-removal business in New York City. Joined by Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), the team quickly finds themselves overwhelmed with calls to capture everything from mischievous spirits to dangerous apparitions. Their work takes a turn when they investigate strange activity surrounding Dana Barrett’s (Sigourney Weaver) apartment building.

‘The Karate Kid’ (1984)

“The Karate Kid” is one of those films that would always play on TV, and I’d find myself getting hooked, even if I’d already seen it countless times before. This iconic martial arts coming-of-age drama became a massive box-office hit and cultural touchstone, helping popularize martial arts in Western mainstream media and launching a multi-decade media franchise. The film has a warm and heartfelt feel, brought to life by its uplifting orchestral score and classic ‘80s pop-rock soundtrack.

After moving from New Jersey to Los Angeles with his mother, teenager Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) struggles to settle into his new surroundings and quickly becomes the target of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and his fellow students from the Cobra Kai karate dojo. After Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), the maintenance man at Daniel’s apartment, steps in to protect him, Daniel discovers that he is an accomplished martial arts master. Daniel asks Miyagi to train him in order to prepare to face Johnny and the other Cobra Kai students at the All-Valley Karate Championship.

‘The Breakfast Club’ (1985)

Widely considered one of the greatest high school films ever made, “The Breakfast Club” defined teenage cinema and cemented the pop-culture phenomenon of the “Brat Pack.” Written by Hughes in just two days, the film reflects his unique ability to treat teenage angst with complete emotional seriousness rather than as cheap comedy. Plus, no matter when you grew up, its characters still feel surprisingly relatable, which is a big part of why “The Breakfast Club” has remained so popular over the years.

Five students at Shermer High School arrive for Saturday detention, each from a different social group: athlete Andrew (Emilio Estevez), popular girl Claire (Molly Ringwald), academic Brian (Anthony Michael Hall), rebellious John (Judd Nelson) and loner Allison (Ally Sheedy). Under the watch of strict vice principal Richard Vernon (Paul Gleason), they are told to spend the day in the school library and write an essay about who they think they are. As the hours pass, the group breaks the rules, argues, shares personal stories and gradually gets to know one another.

‘Parenthood’ (1989)

You can never go wrong with a comedy, and “Parenthood” stands as one of the quintessential multi-generational family films of late-1980s cinema. Of course, it’s not a film I can particularly relate to given it’s literally about parenthood, and I’m not a parent myself, but that doesn’t mean it lacks important lessons to take away. Near the end of the film, a famous monologue compares life to a roller coaster: some people prefer a predictable merry-go-round, while others embrace the terrifying, stomach-churning drops.

Gil Buckman (Steve Martin) is a father trying to balance his career, marriage and three children while dealing with a growing list of family problems. His siblings are facing their own complications, including a teenage daughter’s pregnancy, a troubled teenage son and marital disagreements over having more children. Meanwhile, Gil’s younger brother Larry (Tom Hulce) returns home with his young son while struggling with gambling debts. As the Buckman family comes together, each sibling faces their own challenges, with Gil particularly questioning whether he is doing enough for his children.

‘Field of Dreams’ (1989)

It would be wrong not to include this fever dream of a movie. “Field of Dreams” is the iconic sports fantasy drama that earned three Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score. It’s wild to think that it received such major recognition, especially since Hollywood studios were initially hesitant to fund the movie because high-concept, magical realism stories centered around baseball were considered a tough sell at the box office. Clearly, it proved them wrong.

Lowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) hears a mysterious voice in his cornfield telling him, “If you build it, he will come.” Unsure what it means, Ray follows the instructions and transforms part of his farmland into a baseball diamond. Soon, the ghosts of legendary baseball players, including Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), appear on the field to play. As Ray follows further instructions from the mysterious voice, he travels across the country with writer Terence Mann in search of former baseball player Archie “Moonlight” Graham.

It feels like just last year we were talking about a Peacock price hike. And that's because last year ... we were talking about a Peacock price hike. But just over 12 months after Peacock raised its prices by $3, the streaming service has decided it hasn't taken enough.

Starting August 18 (today), prices for all Peacock plans are increasing by at least $1. Select is going up from $7.99 to $8.99 a month, while Premium is taking a $2 price bump to $12.99 a month. For those who want no ads, Premium Plus is jacked up by $3 to an eye-watering $19.99 monthly price.

If you are already a Peacock subscriber, you'll have some time before this hits your wallet, but not much. According to the streaming service, the new pricing will be effective on your next billing date on or after September 17, 2026. Those who are currently on promotional pricing will continue to receive Peacock at their promotional rate until the promotion expires.

Peacock says this move is to "remain competitive in the marketplace." But the timing certainly raises an eyebrow given Peacock just reported its first profitable quarter ever.

So let's put Peacock's claim to the test. Are its plans still competitive after this latest price hike? Or is it finally time to ditch Peacock now that it's lost its value? Here's our breakdown on Peacock vs. the best streaming services.

Peacock Select: Bravo and not much else for $9 a month

Peacock Select is a relatively new plan, and it's clearly aimed at the "Real Housewives" crowd. For $8.99 a month, you get access to TV shows from NBC, Bravo and other NBCUniversal/Versant networks.

And that's it. No originals, no movies, no live sports.

This plan was already questionable at $7.99. But at $8.99, it's downright offensive. For the same price, you can get Netflix (Standard with ads) and get almost everything Netflix offers, aside from a few movies that aren't allowed to be shown with ads. Live sports, Netflix originals — those are all included.

HBO Max admittedly cuts corners with its Basic with Ads plan. No live sports on this tier. But at $10.99 a month, you still get HBO's full library and new releases from Warner Bros. Discovery. It's still a better value than Peacock Select by a country mile. Meanwhile, Paramount+ Essential costs just $8.99 a month and basically only removes select Showtime shows. If you want movies, Paramount+ originals and live sports, it's got you covered.

As for the rest of the competition? Prime Video has always been a great value at $0 a month, provided you have an Amazon Prime subscription. But even at $8.99 a month, it gives you live sports, a full movie library and tons of shows for the same price as Peacock Select. Disney+ and Hulu are the most expensive competitors at $11.99 a month, but for $12.99 a month you get both, which is great value. Regardless, at this tier, both Disney+ and Hulu give you full libraries, just with ads.

Verdict: Peacock Select was always questionable value. But at $8.99 a month, it's the worst streaming service in the entry-level tier.

Peacock Premium: Still great for sports fans, but its value takes a hit

Peacock Premium is now the middle tier for Peacock after the creation of Select last year. Setting aside price, it's a great offering. You get a deep library of NBCUniversal and Versant (Bravo, MSNow, etc.) shows, as well as "Yellowstone." You also get the full Peacock movie library, live sports and eventually new Universal Studios movies when they debut on streaming.

The problem is, now, you're paying $12.99 a month for it. And you still have to suffer through ads. For comparison, no other streaming service includes ads at this tier All the other ad-supported streaming plans are entry-level plans for Peacock's competitors.

Not every streaming service offers a middle tier as Peacock does. For example, Apple TV only offers one tier. At $12.99, it's the same price as Peacock Premium and has no ads. It also streams in 4K with support for HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sound, but only for its original content. It also only offers original content for the most part, though it does have live sports and a small selection of licensed movies.

As for those services that do offer a middle tier? Netflix Standard (no ads) costs $19.99 a month. HBO Max isn't much cheaper at $18.49 for its Standard plan. But it's worth noting that, in terms of content, you can get most of the same content on these streamers' entry-level tiers.

Verdict: Even with a price hike, Peacock Premium is still competitive with other mid-tier services. However, because it has ads, it's arguably competing with other streaming services' entry-level plans, and those might offer better value.

Peacock Premium Plus: Still a niche product

Here's the dirty secret: Peacock Premium Plus wasn't really worth it at $16.99. Yes, it allowed you to stream your local NBC channel, ditch the ads and download most shows and movies. But these features weren't necessarily worth an extra $6 a month, and most competitors offered downloads on their lower-tier plans. The only other streaming services to restrict downloads to their highest tier were Paramount+, which charged $3 a month less than Peacock, and Hulu, which admittedly was terrible value at $18.99 a month.

Now, with Peacock Premium Plus at $19.99 a month, it's providing even less value than before. Paramount+ Premium, the closest competitor in terms of price, features and size, is just $13.99 a month. That's a massive difference.

To its credit, Peacock Premium Plus isn't the most expensive service in this top tier. Both Netflix at $26.99 a month and HBO Max at $22.99 a month are more expensive. Like with other plans at this tier, the value in upgrading is debatable. Both HBO Max and Netflix reserve 4K streaming for their Premium plans. They'll also boost your audio quality, give you more downloads and let you watch in more places. But I'd argue none of that is worth the extra cash coming out of your wallet.

Disney+ Premium and Hulu Premium are both $1 less a month than Peacock Premium. Again, though, the benefits you get in these plans are questionable. The only benefits they provide over their cheaper versions are no ads, Dolby Atmos (for Disney+) and downloads (for Hulu).

Finally, Prime Video does technically offer a premium plan: Prime Video Ultra. It's $4.99 a month and gives you 4K streaming with Dolby Atmos support. But it's only available in the U.S.

Verdict: Arguably, most people should not sign up for plans in this highest tier. But if you are considering a streaming service's top tier, Peacock Premium Plus is better than some and worse than others.

Verdict: Peacock Premium is still worth considering, but skip Select

This latest Peacock price hike obviously doesn't help the streaming service look more appealing to anyone. But overall, Peacock Premium and Premium Plus are still competitive with the other streaming services in their respective tiers.

That said, Peacock Premium arguably competes more closely with entry-level offerings when it comes to features and catalogues. Compared to entry-level plans, Peacock Premium's value takes a major hit with this price hike. I couldn't recommend it over most entry-level plans or Apple TV, unless I needed Peacock for its live sports offering.

Speaking of entry-level plans, Peacock Select is a terrible value at $8.99. You should not subscribe to it. You should either pay extra for Premium or get a live TV streaming service that offers Bravo. Both will provide much better value, even if you'll pay more out of pocket.

'Toy Story 5' (2026) (PVOD)

Genre: Animated comedy-drama movie

What it's about: The latest "Toy Story" movie centers on Bonnie (Scarlett Spears). She is struggling to make friends until she gets her first tablet (Greta Lee). Her toys, including Jessie (Joan Cusack), Buzz (Tim Allen) and Woody (Tom Hanks), are concerned that Bonnie isn't making the right friends. They're also worried that devices are pushing away toys for good.

Why you should watch it: You'd be forgiven for thinking we didn't need another "Toy Story" movie. But I praised the sequel in my "Toy Story 5" review. It tells a fresh story and isn't afraid to shift from Woody and Buzz to new main characters. It even gives the kids who play with the toys more screen time than ever, another surprising yet refreshing choice.

'Kelsey Cook: Happy Hour' (Netflix)

Genre: Stand-up comedy special

What it's about: In "Kelsey Cook: Happy Hour," the stand-up delivers a fresh, new hour-long special. She discusses the struggles of life in your mid-30s, including "hangxiety," as well as what it's like dating a literal "Chad."

Why you should watch it: Cook has done specials on Hulu and YouTube in the past. But this will be her first for Netflix. If you're looking for a new comedian to get into, this special is worth a look.

"Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Seattle Seahawks" (HBO Max)

Genre: Sports docuseries

What's it about? "Hard Knocks" takes you behind the scenes of an NFL franchise. Each season, HBO picks a new team to examine in the lead-up to Week 1, and this year, it's the reigning champion: the Seattle Seahawks. Are you ready for some football?

Why you should watch it: "Hard Knocks" is one of the best sports docuseries year after year. It sets the gold standard. This year is special, though. It's the first season to feature the Super Bowl champion since 2001, the very first year of "Hard Knocks."

‘Is God Is’ (2026)

It’s definitely disappointing to see a quality movie like “Is God Is” struggle to make waves at the box office. Perhaps the clunky title didn’t help, or maybe this ambitious comedy-thriller, which crosses into multiple genres, was a little difficult to market. Either way, the flick holds a near-perfect 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and I’m hoping that its arrival on Prime Video this week will spark a surge of interest that the acclaimed film deserves.

“Is God Is” is a darkly comedic revenge story centered on twin sisters, Racine (Kara Young) and Anaia (Mallori Johnson). Written and directed by Aleshea Harris and adapted from her stage play of the same name, it follows the two sisters as they embark on a quest for revenge. The target is their estranged father (Sterling K. Brown), who started a fire that left both twins disfigured in childhood. Along the way, they discover their twisted family history.

‘Sudden Death’ (1995)

Jean-Claude Van Damme reunited with director Peter Hyams after their first collaboration, “Timecop,” quickly became a cult favorite and one of the most successful movies of Van Damme’s career. The result was “Sudden Death,” an action-thriller set in the world of professional hockey. It didn’t manage to secure the same crowd-pleasing status as “Timecop,” but nevertheless, it’s an entertaining romp, with Van Damme in full action-star mode.

Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Darren McCord, a former firefighter, now working as the fire marshal at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL team (at the time). Scoring tickets to the Stanley Cup Finals as a birthday treat for his children, he’s unaware that the event has been infiltrated by a group of terrorists with plans to blow up the building if their demands aren’t met. The group is led by ex-CIA agent Joshua Foss (Powers Boothe), and it’s up to McCord to stop them.

‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ (1999)

Hollywood remakes aren’t exactly uncommon, and it’s not even unheard of for a movie to be remade more than once. That’s the case with “The Thomas Crown Affair,” a 1960s heist caper starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, which is getting a modern spin next spring, headlined by Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan. But before then, why not enjoy the first stab at remaking this movie, as the 1999 effort has just landed on Prime Video.

The titular Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) is a bored billionaire who decides to entertain himself by planning the perfect heist. The plan succeeds, and Crown makes off with a Claude Monet masterwork valued at $100 million. Insurance investigator Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) is called in to assist with the painting's retrieval, and so begins an exciting cat-and-mouse game with some serious romantic undertones. In this playful romantic thriller, the big question is who is playing who?

‘Tires’

Netflix’s latest No. 1 show is “Tires,” a workplace comedy that has now returned for its third season. The sitcom was created by stand-up comedian Shane Gillis, Steve Gerben and director John McKeever, and was initially self-funded before being picked up and distributed by Netflix. Across its multiple seasons, the series has established itself as a raw, blue-collar alternative to classic workplace comedies like “The Office.” So, if you’re in the mood for something lighthearted with snappy 20-minute episodes, this is definitely worth streaming this week.

Season 3 of “Tires” picks up with cousins Will (Steve Gerben) and Shane (Shane Gillis) continuing to run the struggling Valley Forge Automotive Center. As Will looks for new ways to bring in customers and keep the business afloat, Shane’s unpredictable antics continue to cause problems around the shop. The new season also introduces several fresh faces, including Billy Magnussen as Taylor, an entrepreneur with a history with Will, while Shane reconnects with his former high school girlfriend, Jill (Taylor Misiak).

‘My Life with the Walter Boys’

Still holding strong in the top 10 is “My Life with the Walter Boys,” a romantic drama that very much thrives on its central love triangle and the idea of yearning for someone you shouldn’t be with. A direct adaptation of Ali Novak’s viral 2014 Wattpad novel of the same name, the series is a glossy mix of cozy small-town drama and high school relationships. “My Life with the Walter Boys” season 3 is chaotic and packed with drama, but its compelling love story, endearing characters, and easy-to-binge episodes make it incredibly difficult to turn off.

Season 3 picks up immediately after Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) and Cole (Noah LaLonde) confess their feelings, only for Alex (Ashby Gentry) to overhear them before George Walter (Marc Blucas) is rushed to hospital. As the family deals with the aftermath, Jackie focuses on helping develop a new community space in Silver Falls, while Alex joins a rodeo team and Cole gets an unexpected opportunity to pursue his passion for racing. Jackie’s childhood friend also arrives from New York, bringing a connection to the life she left behind.

‘My Brilliant Career’

“My Brilliant Career” is a six-part period comedy-drama series that serves as a modern, energetic reimagining of Miles Franklin’s seminal 1901 Australian literary classic. The engine of the series rests on the friction between creative freedom and systemic financial duty, as a fiercely independent young woman fights to become a published writer rather than a socialite wife. Upon its release this month, it earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with its lavish period setting and modern sensibilities drawing obvious comparisons to “Bridgerton.”

Set in rural Australia around 1900, “My Brilliant Career” follows Sybylla Melvyn (Philippa Northeast), a young woman determined to become a writer. After financial difficulties force her to leave home, Sybylla is sent to live with her wealthy grandmother, where she is expected to learn proper manners and find a suitable husband. Instead, she becomes drawn to Harry Beecham (Christopher Chung), a wealthy local landowner, while continuing to pursue her writing ambitions. Soon, she must decide what she wants from her future and whether marriage could fit into the life she has imagined for herself.

Apple's annual iPhone event is surely only a matter of weeks away and it could easily be the biggest Apple event in years. We're expecting a slew of new devices to be unveiled as John Ternus takes the reins as Apple's new CEO.

And all of that is before we discuss the launch of the long-rumored, much-hyped foldable iPhone Ultra — Apple's first attempt at the folding phone form factor. It's not clear when the device will actually launch, but at the very least, its reveal is almost certainly right around the corner.

In all, Apple is expected to launch up to eight different devices, from the expected new iPhones and upgraded Apple Watches to several new smart home-focused products.

Here's what we expect to see at Apple's September event, and when it should kick off.

When is the iPhone 18 event?

For the last several years, Apple has held its iPhone launch event in the second week of September, and usually on a Tuesday. This would normally mean that Apple would hold its 2026 event on Tuesday, September 8. However, the preceding Monday is Labor Day, so Apple will likely push the event to Wednesday, September 9.

As for launch, iPhones usually go to pre-order the following Friday, but this year that's September 11. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported that the pre-orders will be pushed to Saturday, September 12.

This year's edition will be hosted by Ternus, and it looks like his tenure will start with a bang.

New iPhones

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max

This year, Apple is expected to launch only its iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. The entry-level iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Plus won't debut until next spring alongside the iPhone 18e model.

Compared to the iPhone Ultra, they should be priced much more affordably, but analysts have predicted that they could still cost between $200 and $350 higher than the iPhone 17 Pro family. Sticking with the 1TB Pro Max, the current iPhone 17 model costs $1,599. This means the iPhone 18 Pro Max could cost between $1,849 and $1949.

Beyond price, we anticipate a few crucial updates to the iPhone this year. The design will likely look the same, but we should benefit from larger batteries, a variable-aperture camera lens, the A20 Pro chipset, and a smaller Dynamic Island.

iPhone Ultra

The biggest announcement of the event is sure to be the debut of the foldable iPhone Ultra.

Leaks have suggested that it will have more of a wider shape, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 8, with a 7.8-inch foldable display and a 5.4-inch cover screen. It could measure between 4.5 and 4.8mm when unfolded, making it one of the thinnest iPhones ever.

It's rumored to sport a 4,883 mAh battery, the A20 chipset, Apple's in-house C2 modem, and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner in the power button.

Apple reportedly delayed releasing a folding iPhone until it could eliminate the crease in the display, but whether it's accomplished this remains to be seen. Even Samsung and Oppo, despite their long lead time, have only had moderate success.

One downside is that the iPhone Ultra could be very expensive, costing as much as $2,500 for the base variant. And a brand-new leak this week suggested the iPhone Ultra may not be immediately available, with only "extremely limited" availability.

AirPods Ultra

These ones are a little surprising as based on a previous Gurman report, we weren't expecting the AirPods Ultra until 2027 at the earliest. However, rumor aggregator AppleTrack just reported this week that the Ultra version of AirPods will launch at the iPhone event.

The big change with these headphones is they will allegedly feature a camera that will feed into Siri to allow it to "see" the world.

It would utilize a version of Visual Intelligence to let you ask Siri questions about your surroundings or get turn-by-turn directions from the more powerful AI Siri releasing this fall.

The AirPods Ultra has also just appeared in a leaked video buried within the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate, and it shows how they'll help you identify objects in the real world.

Apple Watch 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4

Unlike the iPhones, we know a bit less about the next Apple Watches. We are expecting two new models in the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4.

The leaks have been sparse, but Apple is reportedly not bringing many upgrades this year. The biggest change might be a new kind of band attachment. This does mean that your old bands might not be compatible with the new watches.

Reportedly, Apple could offer a ceramic case option for the first time in years. It should also sport new health and fitness-related upgrades. We already know that watchOS 27 will bring new AI features, an updated Workout Buddy and more useful data tracking. Plus, it should feature better integration with the upgraded Siri AI which we've already seen in the iOS 27 beta.

Smart Home

Apple's smart home ambitions and the rumors surrounding them need to be taken with a massive grain of salt. Leaks have suggested Apple is planning on introducing a suite of smart home devices starting with a revamped HomePod and an AI-powered Apple TV 4K streaming device.

Those rumors have existed for more than two years and largely feed into the company's promises around the AI-powered Siri.

However, this year with iOS 27, Apple may finally have the chatbot that was promised. If it actually releases and works as pitched, this year could actually be the start of Apple Home.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, long a reporter of the rumored HomePod updates, believes that a new HomePod mini could launch this September alongside the rumored HomePod Home hub.

Several different iterations of this device have been rumored, including one with a $1,000 robot arm. The most common version involves a wall-mounted touchpad or a HomePod speaker with a touch display about the size of an iPad mini.

This device would have a FaceTime camera for video calls and presence sensors to initiate smart home routines.

HomePod mini 2

A new HomePod mini might also debut, but it might not be as big of an upgrade as the Hub. Most rumors suggest that it will feature a new chip and audio improvements.

To be clear, this one feels even more far-fetched than the Hub; the HomePod mini 2 has been on our rumor radar since at least 2023. The current version debuted in 2020, and like the next device, is long overdue for an update.

Apple TV 4K 2026

Like the HomePod series, Apple hasn't released a new version of the Apple TV 4K since 2022. We're long overdue for an upgrade — even if it's only a more powerful chip for stronger performance.

Previously, it was suggested that a new Apple TV could feature the A17 Pro chip, but it's more likely it'll get the new A20 or, to save some money, last year's A19. The device should also get the rumored N2 chip for better Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

Outside of chips, the big upgrade would be Siri AI, which could let you connect the Apple TV as a hub for smart devices. One rumor suggested that Apple might release a set-top box with a camera, which would allow for FaceTime calls and gesture-based controls.

While Hoopla has around 1 million titles across its many categories of entertainment.

To get started, you’ll need a valid library card from your local or county library system. If you don't have time to visit a branch, good news: You don't actually need to set foot inside a building to start streaming. Public libraries have evolved significantly over the past few years, with hundreds now offering Instant Digital Cards (or e-Cards) you can get online in less than two minutes. Rather than checking your ID in-person, the system can check your geolocation or mobile phone number to confirm you live within their service area. Just head to your local library's website to sign up.

Once issued, your e-Card number and PIN give you immediate access to digital catalog services — including Libby and Kanopy — without ever setting up a physical card. Once you’re signed in, you can browse the available catalog and start watching. You can stream from your laptop, tablet, phone or TV through Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, or Chromecast. A beginner's guide to Hoopla

Hoopla works with public libraries across the U.S. to make it easy to instantly borrow eBooks, audiobooks, movies, and TV for free with just a library card. And items are always available, so there are no wait lists!

On Hoopla, you have a limited number of checkouts per month that's determined by your library (usually between five to 10 items, with each TV show season counting as a single item). Once you've hit that number, you'll have to wait until next month to get anything new, and your credits don't carry over. Until then, you can add titles to your favorites list so you won’t forget about them.

There's also the Hoopla collective daily borrow limit, which is tied to the total number of checkouts allowed by your library’s Hoopla users each day, not just your personal account. Once the library lends enough titles on Hoopla to reach their spending limit for the day, borrowing is turned off until it resets at midnight. If you have multiple library cards, you can stack your monthly borrowing allowance to check out more movies and shows.

You use Hoopla very much like you would any other library or streaming database. Just sign up on a computer at hoopladigital.com or through the Hoopla app using your library card information, and once you're logged in, you can browse or search for the content you want. Once you've checked out what you like, you can access it on your computer, phone, or tablet. The Hoopla app also has a kids' mode that will filter content to age-appropriate materials.

A beginner's guide to Kanopy

Kanopy’s catalog gives you access to over 30,000 movies, TV shows, audiobooks and more. To get started, you'll need to head to www.kanopy.com or the Kanopy app. Though you may first want to check Kanopy’s Library Search page to see if your local public or college library has an existing agreement with Kanopy. Click "Find Your Library" and if your library supports the service, all you'll need is your library card number and PIN to gain access.

Just like with Hoopla, Kanopy relies on a monthly borrowing limit rather than unlimited streaming. After signing up, you can stream up to 10 titles per month, and credits renew at the beginning of every calendar month. These credits also don't carry over if you don’t use them. Libraries often feature a rotating shelf of movies or series marked as zero tickets that don't count toward your monthly total. If you have cards from different library systems, you can add both to your Kanopy profile to combine monthly ticket allowances.

Kanopy also offers seasonal and speciality collections, like its month-long Fright Fest collection of Halloween favorites every October or holiday classics every December. It also offers Kanopy Kids for a curated collection of content for children.

The past few years saw the untimely passings of "Dawson's Creek" icon James Van Der Beek and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Gossip Girl" star Michelle Trachtenberg, and now TV fans have to weather another tragic blow: The loss of Hayden Panettiere, the child star–turned–grown-up actress known for her roles in "Remember the Titans," "Bring It On: All or Nothing" and the "Scream" franchise, among others.

Panettiere died at the age of 36 on Sunday, August 16, after emergency responders found her unresponsive at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina; no official cause of death has been formally announced. The performer leaves behind a daughter and a decades-spanning career that spanned popular drama series, big-budget films, soap operas and more.

In honor of the late star, here are three TV shows starring Hayden Panettiere that you should check out and where to stream them now.

'Heroes'

"Save the cheerleader, save the world," declared the famous tagline of the NBC superhero drama "Heroes," which ran for four seasons from September 2006 to February 2010. And that not-so-average cheerleader — Texas teen Claire Bennet, who discovers she can heal from any injury instantly — was portrayed by Panettiere in a breakout role that not only anchored the drama's central mystery but also provided much of its emotional heft.

And sure, the subsequent seasons of "Heroes" had a hard time replicating the quality of that exceptionally bingeable first season, but that was to no fault of Panettiere, who consistently brought a level of grounded relatability to an increasingly baffling sci-fi premise.

'Ally McBeal'

Panettiere started her career when she was just 11 months old as a commercial performer, later segueing into soap operas, animated movies and, later, primetime dramas like the early-aughts FOX series "Ally McBeal." The then-12-year-old joined the cast of the Calista Flockhart-led legal dramedy in its fifth and final season as Maddie Harrington, the long-lost daughter of the title character.

Appearing in 12 episodes in a buzzy part (her character was revealed to have been conceived via an egg donation Ally made years prior), Panettiere gave a subtle and vulnerable performance that held its own against her much older castmates, including Julianne Nicholson, James Marden and Regina Hall.

'Nashville'

Panettiere found herself in quite the duet with "Nashville," ABC's hit musical drama that aired on the alphabet network for four seasons from October 2012 to May 2016 before moving to CMT for its final two seasons. She led the series as ambitious young singer Juliette Barnes, whose rising star puts her in a fierce rivalry with fading country-music legend Rayna James (Connie Britton).

Along the way, the women contend with business drama, romantic entanglements, family betrayals and more, all while having to remember that the show must go on. (And yes, that is actors themselves crooning those tunes.)

We’re in the mid-August lull now, and that’s clearly being reflected in this week’s line of new movies across the best streaming services. The biggest players like Netflix and Prime Video are taking the week off, but this gives HBO Max and Paramount+ a chance to pick up the slack. So even if the options are more limited this week, there are still new movies to watch.

My pick of the week comes on premium streaming with the digital release of “Toy Story 5.” Pixar’s latest animated adventure is pure joy and proves this franchise still has that beloved spark even after all this time. But if you’re craving something less family-friendly, there's an overlooked Anne Hathaway drama on HBO Max, and Paramount+ has a new horror.

‘Toy Story 5’ (PVOD)

Let me take this opportunity to apologize to Pixar. I was one of many who felt that “Toy Story 5” was a totally unnecessary sequel with the franchise ready to retire. I should have had more faith in the folks over at Pixar because their most consistent series delivers yet again in this fifth outing. Focusing on Jessie (voiced by Joan Cusack), it’s another family-friendly ride stuffed with humor and enough heart to make you tear up a little.

In “Toy Story 5,” it’s “toys vs. tech” as Bonnie (Scarlett Spears) is gifted a tablet device called Lilypad (Greta Lee) and quickly becomes screen-obsessed. Concerned about the impact this new gadget is having on Bonnie, all your favorite toys, including Jessie, Buzz (Tim Allen) and Woody (Tom Hanks), team up to save playtime. Along the way, Jessie is also forced to face her past and accept that letting go is part of life. It all builds to one of the franchise’s most emotionally charged moments.

‘Rose of Nevada’ (PVOD)

There are a few overlooked movies heading to streaming this week, but none of them are rated as highly on Rotten Tomatoes as “Rose of Nevada.” This sci-fi drama holds a mighty impressive 92% score, so if you put stock in RT ratings, you’ll definitely want to consider streaming this British movie. It pairs together George MacKay and Callum Turner, who you can currently see in theaters in the rom-com “One Night Only.”

Set in a Cornish fishing village battling against economic downturn, the legend of the Rose of Nevada, a vessel that mysteriously disappeared at sea three decades earlier, still grips the town. When the long-lost boat suddenly reappears in the harbor, Nick (MacKay) and Liam (Turner) join its new crew and, on their maiden voyage, find themselves transported back in time to 30 years previously. It’s a salty sci-fi adventure with lots of heart.

‘Passenger’ (Paramount+)

When “Obsession” and “Backrooms” were hogging the horror spotlight in theaters, another chiller was also battling for attention: “Passenger.” It definitely didn’t manage to compete with two of the year’s buzziest flicks. Maybe that’s because it’s quite a generic scary movie, but it does have a few spooky moments. Plus, it effectively uses the inherent fear of driving on a dark road in the middle of the night. Just expect lots of jump scares.

A young couple, Tyler (Jacob Scipio) and Maddie (Lou Llobell), have recently quit their jobs and taken up the van life lifestyle. Swapping everyday mundanity for a life of living on the open road. When they witness a gruesome accident on an isolated highway, something sinister begins to follow them. Hearing tall tales of a demonic presence known as the Passenger, they must rid themselves of this specter before it’s too late.

‘Mother Mary’ (HBO Max)

Ann Hathaway is having a record year at the box office. Cumulatively, her movies have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide, with “The Odyssey” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2” the standouts. However, “Mother Mary,” a psychological drama starring the popular actress, didn’t quite manage to make the same sort of splash. Which is a shame, as my colleague Malcolm McMillan notes that Hathaway “stuns” in this David Lowery project.

Hathaway plays the eponymous Mother Mary, a globally successful pop star who is preparing for a comeback after an on-stage accident derailed her career. With the pressure mounting, she seeks out her estranged best friend and former costume designer, Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel). This opens old wounds and a reckoning with the past. Part drama, part thriller, part romance, and even part concert movie, “Mother Mary” is a fascinating mix, even if it doesn’t quite manage to blend all its elements perfectly.

‘The Fence’ (AMC+)

Claire Denis’ new movie is an adaptation of the play “Black Battles with Dogs” by Bernard-Marie Koltès. This drama stars Isaach de Bankolé, Matt Dillon, Mia McKenna-Bruce and Tom Blyth. I’m particularly interested in this one due to the latter two names. Tom Blyth, who you might recognize from “The Hunger Games” franchise, was excellent in “Wasteman” earlier this year, and Mia McKenna-Bruce completely blew me away in 2023’s devastating British drama “How to Have Sex.” Consider me intrigued!

Set on a construction site in West Africa, the site’s supervisor, Horn (Dillon), shares a cabin with a young engineer, Cal (Tom Blyth). Horn’s new bride, Leone (McKenna-Bruce), arrives for a visit, while at the same time a man named Alboury (de Bankolé) appears demanding the body of his brother, who died earlier that day on site. What follows is a very long night, as Alboury refuses to leave quietly, and Leone is caught in the middle.

When it comes to deciding what to watch, it can get overwhelming. Fast. There are so many options out there. Even if you keep it to just the best streaming services, there are dozens of new shows and movies added every day.

Top shows and movies to stream tonight

'Blue Beetle' (2023) (Prime Video)

Genre: Superhero movie

What it's about: One of the last DC Expanded Universe movies before James Gunn took over at DC Studios, "Blue Beetle" stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes. He's a recent college graduate who goes to work for Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon). While there, he comes across an alien relic known as the Scarab, which fuses with him and grants him powers. There's just one problem: Victoria wants it for herself.

Why you should watch it: While this movie is from before the DCU, Gunn is keeping Blue Beetle in his new DC canon. So this movie is still somewhat relevant, as Maridueña is set to reprise as Reyes in "Man of Tomorrow" next year. Plus, it's a surprisingly good movie, despite flopping at the box office.

'Furious' season 1 (Hulu)

Genre: Crime drama series

What's it about? Emmy Rossum stars in "Furious" as FBI agent Alice Black. A former homicide detective, she's now working for the Feds. Her first case is a hunt for a serial killer (Lola Petticrew), but not all is as it seems. This killer is a sex trafficking survivor on a quest for vigilante justice, and that might stop Alice from bringing her in when the time comes..

Why you should watch it: This show has been a surprise hit for Hulu. It's currently an impressive 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences are similarly enthused, rating it 87% fresh. "Furious" might secretly be the show of the summer, and it's not too late to catch up.

FX's "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" season 18 premiere (Hulu)

Genre: Situational comedy series

What's it about? The gang's all here. Charlie, Mac, Dee and Dennis (Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson and Glenn Howerton) are back for a new season and they're doing everything from heading to the Renaissance Faire to trying non-alcoholic beer and even getting in nine innings of baseball. It looks like Frank (Danny DeVito) is even getting married ... though who knows if we'll ever get to "I do."

Why you should watch it: 18 seasons in, you probably already know if you like "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or not. But if you're on the fence, don't be. Nearly two decades later, this show remains an absolute riot.

He-Man fans didn’t turn out in large numbers when it was in cinemas, but they’re paying attention on streaming. The fantasy blockbuster also holds a strong 86% viewer score on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Project Hail Mary’ (2026)

I’ve recommended “Project Hail Mary” dozens of times already this year, and I’m not stopping now. Put simply, this is one of the year’s most entertaining blockbusters, with plenty of heart and exciting moments. It’s adapted from Andy Weir’s novel and stars Ryan Gosling as an astronaut on a critical mission. But while Gosling is fantastic, the real star of the show is an alien creature named Rocky, brought to life by some phenomenal puppetry.

In “Project Hail Mary,” astronaut Ryland Grace (Gosling) awakes on an interstellar craft, millions of miles away from Earth. The problem is he can’t remember his mission, or even his own name. Piecing together his past, Grace must find a way to prevent Earth’s sun from dying, but fortunately, he’s got some help from a lovable alien, Rocky. “Project Hail Mary” is the complete sci-fi package; it’s funny, thrilling and packed with memorable moments.

‘The Gates’ (2026)

Similar to "Masters of the Universe," "The Gates" is a movie that didn't receive much attention on the big screen, but is getting a second win via Prime Video. This dark thriller marks the final movie appearance of James Van Der Beek, who passed away in February. While the reviews were lukewarm, Van Der Beek's villainous performance was highlighted as one of the movie's biggest strengths. I'm glad to see his final film role celebrated.

“The Gate” sees a trio of college friends (Mason Gooding, Algee Smith and Keith Powers) enjoying a road trip when they make what proves to be a potentially fatal mistake by taking a shortcut through a remote gated community. They witness a ritualistic murder and are then trapped within the community's walls. Hunted by the local residents who plan to frame them for the murder, the trio endures a desperate battle for survival.

"Company Men" opens against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis, quickly establishing the wealthy, comfortable lives of GTX executives like Bobby Walker (Affleck) and Gene McClary (Tommy Lee Jones). That comfort is short-lived. Bobby arrives at work only to find his dream life collapsing because he's being let go. He packs his office into a box and walks out, leaving behind a building that suddenly feels colder and emptier than ever.

Before long, fellow executives Gene and Phil Woodward (Chris Cooper) face the same fate. The film follows each man through the painful stages of joblessness, exposing hidden personal struggles — from Gene's workplace affair with Sally Wilcox (Maria Bello) to Phil dealing with alcoholism at home — and the desperation to maintain their lavish lifestyles without an income.

While all three stories unfold, the focus remains on Bobby's humbling search for work. Moving from overconfidence to harsh reality, he applies for positions lower and lower down the corporate ladder. Eventually, his pride takes a back seat, leading him to accept a rough construction job from his tough-love brother-in-law, Jack Dolan (Kevin Costner).

Why I recommend you stream 'The Company Men'

On paper, it might be hard to feel immediate sympathy for wealthy corporate executives who drive Ferraris and live in mansions. However, "Company Men" goes far beyond executive boardroom drama—it’s fundamentally about the raw humanity underneath the suit jackets, and that is where the film truly shines.

Affleck delivers a stellar performance as a man desperately trying to maintain his identity as his family's provider. Navigating the overconfident highs and humbling lows, he renders Bobby extremely relatable throughout his journey. Eventually, Bobby moves his wife, Maggie (Rosemarie DeWitt), and their children out of their lavish home and into his parents' house, slowly learning to let go of the fancy sports cars and country club memberships.

Cooper and Jones also deliver powerhouse performances. Cooper plays the most vulnerable of the trio, expertly portraying a man whose entire identity was wrapped up in his career, leaving him completely unmoored by its loss.

If you're worried the film is nothing but a gloomy downward spiral, rest assured: it lands on a remarkably strong, hopeful note. Alongside the central cast, I loved Eamonn Walker as Bobby’s steadfast job-hunting comrade, Danny, as well as Kevin Costner, who shines as the tough-love brother-in-law who can barely stand Bobby, yet steps up to help him anyway.

With economic uncertainty constantly making headlines, "The Company Men" remains a deeply relevant, empathetic, and ultimately inspiring look at the reality of job loss.

Meanwhile, Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (Rob McElhenney) and Dennis (Glenn Howerton) try to keep Frank from fleeing.

‘Average Joe’ season 2 (Paramount+)

The vibes: A midlife crisis goes international.

After a threat linked to the Russian mob puts his family in danger, Joe Washington (Deon Cole) heads from Pittsburgh to Cape Town with Leon (Malcolm Barrett), Cathy (Cynthia Kaye McWilliams) and Touch (Michael Trucco). Their search for answers soon uncovers secrets about Joe’s late father and puts the crew squarely in the sights of some very dangerous people.

This season’s cast includes military veterans, a car enthusiast, wellness coach and chef.

‘Outer Banks’ season 5 (Netflix)

The vibes: One last treasure hunt because Goonies Pogues never die (well, rarely).

But mourning will have to wait: They need to find the legendary Blue Crown, which Kiara thinks might hold the key to bringing him back. With Rafe reluctantly joining the crew, they embark on the most epic quest of their lives.

If you're looking to find what new movies and shows Netflix is adding this week, I've got you covered. The streaming service is adding just 14 new movies and shows this week. But there are quite a few titles still worth adding to your watchlist.

A big returning title is "Outer Banks," which is back for season 5 this week. Another big returning show is "Love is Blind: UK," which is dropping the first eight episodes of season 3 on Wednesday.

If you're looking for something totally fresh, "Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing" is a brand new documentary film about the rough times at the American plane manufacturer. Or, you could watch "Kelsey Cook: Happy Hour," an hour-long special that marks Cook's first special on Netflix. Finally, if you're just looking for a good movie to watch, the unhinged 2016 comedy-drama "Swiss Army Man" is coming to Netflix on Wednesday, and it's a must-watch.

Why you should watch it: While this show might have started on a North Carolina island, it's transformed into a globe-trotting mystery. Season 5 marks the end of "Outer Banks." So whether you're a fan who wants to see this story through or just looking for a new show to binge, this is the time to check it out.

'Love is Blind: UK' season 3

Genre: Reality dating series

What's it about? "Love is Blind" takes blind dating to a whole new level. In this latest season of its U.K. edition, 30 singles from England, Scotland, and Wales, who range in age from 27 to 36, will enter the show's now-iconic pods to see if they can find happily-ever-after despite never even seeing each other before agreeing to get hitched.

Why you need to watch it: It's not impossible that "Love is Blind" season 3 will bring something new to the table. But, most likely, it will follow the same formula and produce the same addictive drama. After all, if it's not broken, why fix it?

'Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing'

Genre: Documentary movie

What it's about: "Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing" is the sequel to the 2022 documentary film "Downfall: The Case Against Boeing." This follow-up from director Rory Kennedy covers the death of Boeing whistleblower John Barnett and highlights other whistleblowers who have come forward against the aviation giant.

Why you should watch it: If you've ever had doubts about flying on a Boeing, maybe skip this one. The company's mistakes have been well-documented and this point, and this documentary is sure to shed light on further questionable, even deadly behavior.

'Kelsey Cook: Happy Hour'

Genre: Stand-up comedy special

What it's about: In "Kelsey Cook: Happy Hour," the stand-up delivers a fresh, new hour-long special. She discusses the struggles of life in your mid-30s, including "hangxiety," as well as what it's like dating a literal "Chad."

Why you should watch it: Cook has done specials in the past on Hulu and YouTube. But this will be her first for Netflix. If you're looking for a new comedian to get into, this special is worth a look.

'Swiss Army Man'

Genre: Surrealist comedy-drama movie

What it's about: "Swiss Army Man" stars Paul Dano as Hank. He's been stranded on an island. He thinks he's doomed until he finds "Manny" (Daniel Radcliffe), a bloated corpse that has strange but useful powers. Manny might just be Hank's ticket home.

Why you should watch it: If you've ever wanted to see Paul Dano ride a flatulent Harry Potter like a Jet Ski, or see Daniel Radcliffe use his erection as a compass, congrats. This movie is meant for you.

But in all due seriousness, you really should check it out.

'Facing El Chapo' (2026)

Genre: Crime action thriller movie

What it's about: Known as "La Captura" in its native Mexico, "Facing El Chapo" stars Noé Hernández and Alfonso Herrera as a pair of cops on a routine traffic stop. That is, until they open the car, where they find cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Now, they just have to survive bringing him in, which is easier said than done.

Why you should watch it: I hadn't heard of this movie before watching the trailer. But I'm sold. This movie looks genuinely thrilling from the bit the trailer shows off, and is probably a must-watch for fans of "Sicario" or "Narcos."

'SEAL Team' seasons 1-7

Genre: Military drama series

What it's about: "SEAL Team" centers around Master Chief Special Warfare Operator Jason Hayes (David Boreanaz). He leads Bravo Team, a unit within the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group of the U.S. Navy SEALs. Each episode, they undertake the most dangerous, high-stakes missions the military can throw at them. As if that wasn't difficult enough, though, they still have to try and keep their personal lives intact when they get home.

Why you should watch it: This show was a massive hit for CBS and Paramount. With 114 episodes available, it's also supremely bingable. If you like a military drama or even a procedural like "NCIS," this show is worth a watch.

Tonight's "Lanterns" premiere shouldn't have had everything riding on it. Sure, there was hype. There were expectations. This was still a major DC superhero being put on an HBO show. It was still Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as not just one, but two Green Lanterns. It was still Damon Lindelof returning to HBO and DC following the acclaim of 2019's "Watchmen" series.

But the future of James Gunn's DCU wasn't supposed to be riding on the success of this show. This was supposed to be a big swing Gunn could take after the surefire success of "Supergirl" earlier in the summer. Except, "Supergirl" was a flop. Now, "Lanterns" was the property that needed to be the success, or the whole DCU could fall apart.

Well, we don't have to worry about the implications of that scenario anymore, because "Lanterns" is a hit. It's great. It's as if Lindelof picked up right where he left off with "Watchmen" and didn't look back, and it delivered exactly what I hoped: a darker, grittier, more grounded Green Lantern series would deliver.

That's not to say it's perfect. While the quality of the actors cast in this series is (so far) unimpeachable, the ages are another matter. I'm willing to play fast and loose with things like this, but there are generations of characters within this show that, frankly, look like they're around the same age. It's not a dealbreaker, but it is a flaw. Still, it's not even close to enough to stop me from declaring this HBO series must-see TV.

Spoilers ahead for "Lanterns" premiere

'Lanterns' is a tale of two Lanterns and three timelines

"Lanterns" (at least the premiere episode) takes place in three separate years, each at least a decade apart. We briefly see John as a kid in 1996, when Hal reveals to the world that he's the Green Lantern. Then, we spend the majority of the premiere in 2016, where it seems our story really begins and when Hal begins to train John.

Finally, as a coda to the premiere, we arrive in the present: 2026. John is now in charge, and Hal is ... well, Hal's fate seems like it'll be a major plotline in this show. I won't spoil exactly what happens in case you haven't seen the episode. You can see what's coming, but it's still a bit of a surprise when it does.

At any rate, it's 2016 where the bulk of the story takes place. It's here that we see John training to be a Green Lantern under Hal, who seems to be going through almost a midlife crisis. He's not handling having a trainee well, especially since that trainee might turn into a replacement.

But that mentor/mentee conflict gets shelved once our heroes suddenly head to Nebraska for what turns out to be a mass shooting where the victims are all aliens. Or at least, that's what Hal thinks.

Turns out, Hal's right. This is the highlight of the episode: Hal interrogating this seemingly ordinary Nebraskan until he can get him to trip up and reveal he's an alien. He finally does, but the alien reveals themself to be a cold-blooded soldier, ready to die for his people. That's precisely what he does when he sets off a massive bomb within himself that Hal only just manages to keep contained with his ring.

But this alien was just an advanced scout, and after meeting with the almost certainly villainous William Macon, it seems the Lanterns are the only ones aware of an impending extraterrestrial invasion.

Verdict: This is the Green Lantern show I hoped we'd get

When does that invasion come? Well, we don't learn that in this premiere episode. The easy guess is that it comes in 2016, but I think, based on what we see, that the main invasion is still to come, and that's why we end the episode in 2026.

Regardless, there's no denying that this premiere has set up a season I can't wait to see play out. I'm already anticipating being devastated by a tragic event at some point in the next seven episodes.

But I'm also anticipating seeing John and Hal get fleshed out more as characters. We've already seen some of John's complicated side, including his relationship with his father (J. Alphonse Nicholson/Sherman Augustus), who shoots apples off his head, and a sexual encounter outside of a bar with someone who turned out to be William Macon's wife (Poorna Jagannathan). We're still waiting to see more of Hal's complications, though hints are already dropping.

Just as important as this character building, though, I'm hopeful the show continues to give us John and Hal using the ring. A real concern going into the series was that the ring wouldn't be used much, so that the show would stay grounded. But that didn't prove to be the case in the premiere, and if Lindelof and company can keep it up for the rest of the season, James Gunn's perch atop DC Studios might just stay safe after all.

'The People We Meet on Vacation' (2026)

This sunny slice of escapism based on Emily Henry's novel of the same name recently scored an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Television Movie. "The People We Meet on Vacation" is sun-splashed romcom where a pair of unlikely college best friends, free-spirited Poppy (Emily Bader) and type-A control freak Alex (Tom Blyth), finally reconnect after falling out of touch over the years.

To celebrate, they revive their annual summer tradition of spending one week together on vacation. Of course, that's exactly when long-simmering sparks start to fly, and the pair finally begins to see what all their friends and family have been telling them for ages.

'Nonnas' (2025)

For some seriously scrumptious vibes, look no further than Vince Vaughn's "Nonnas," a dramedy directed by Stephen Chbosky ("The Perks of Being a Wallflower") with a solid 82% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Inspired by the true story of Joe Scaravella (Vaughn), it follows an Italian-American from Brooklyn who finds himself at a crossroads after losing his mother and grandmother.

Drawn to the time-honored family recipes he grew up with, he cooks up a plan to share that feeling with his community. He leaves his career to open up a Staten Island restaurant staffed entirely by feisty Italian grandmothers, lovingly referred to as nonnas, played by Hollywood legends Susan Sarandon, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, and Lorraine Bracco.

'A League of Their Own' (1992)

Since I'm based in Rockford, I'm all but legally required to shout out "A League of Their Own," which landed on Netflix last month. Inspired by the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League created during World War II, it follows one of the league's showboatist teams: the Rockford Peaches. While the league itself was short-lived, this beloved comedy drama remains a classic that's still widely regarded as one of the greatest baseball movies of all time.

The star-studded cast is packed with memorable performances, led by Geena Davis as Dorothy "Dottie" Hinson alongside Lori Petty as her younger sister Kit Keller; Madonna as the outspoken Mae Mordabito; and Rosie O'Donnell as the fast-talking Doris Murphy. Tom Hanks is equally unforgettable as the hard-drinking, reluctant manager Jimmy Dugan, who's behind many of the film's most iconic moments.

Those old Disney Channel movie bumpers never fail to churn up plenty of nostalgia, making me misty-eyed over the golden age of DCOMs. Disney, in its latest bid to mine that highly profitable vein dry, released "Camp Rock 3" this week on Disney+ and Hulu. It's got all the catchy songs and feel-good teen drama that made "Camp Rock" such a beloved part of many childhoods to begin with. 'The Lizzie McGuire Movie' (2003)

"The Lizzie McGuire Movie" was played on repeat in my house growing up, the closest thing to an aughts jukebox musical we had until "Mamma Mia" had us belting out "Dancing Queen" two years later. Based on the show of the same name, it stars Hillary Duff as the lovable but hopelessly out of her depth Lizzie, who heads to Rome on a school trip where a dreamy Italian pop star (Yani Gellman) mistakes her for his ex singing partner.

He convinces Lizzie to take her place on stage and lip-sync along to her parts, kicking off a whirlwind romance that's stuffed to the brim with early-2000s Disney charm. For more breezy, feel-good energy and catchy musical moments like in "Camp Rock 3," this is the one to watch.

'High School Musical' (2006)

Of course, no Disney Channel movie marathon would be complete without "High School Musical." Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens are iconic as Troy and Gabriella, a jock and a transfer student who fall for each other while auditioning for their school's musical. To everyone's surprise they land the lead parts, but drama class royalty Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and her twin Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) won't be overshadowed that easily.

Between its huge musical numbers and cast of instantly memorable characters, it's probably the closest match to "Camp Rock 3" on this list. Director Kenny Ortega is behind several cult classic DCOMs, from "Hocus Pocus" to the first three "Descendants" movies.

'Halloweentown' (1998)

Sure it's August, but it's never too early to start celebrating Halloween. Especially with Hulu adding the first two "Halloweentown" movies this month. This holiday staple follows Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown), a teenager whose widowed mother (Judith Hoag) refuses to let her kids celebrate Halloween.

When her kooky grandmother Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) leaves after her annual Halloween visit, Marnie and her brother (Joey Zimmerman) secretly follow her back to Halloweentown, a fantastical city they thought was only in storybooks. Packed with plenty of cozy Halloween vibes, it's a nostalgic pick for anyone looking for a blast from the past to reconnect with their inner child.

"Lanterns" brings the Green Lantern Corps to live-action once more, as Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler join forces for a gritty, grounded version of the superhero story.

What is 'It's What's Inside' about?

Eight years after they were last together, a group of college friends reunites at the estate of groom-to-be Reuben (Devon Terrell) the night before his wedding. The crew includes anxious Shelby (Brittany O'Grady) and her thoughtless boyfriend Cyrus (James Morosini), influencer Nikki (Alycia Debnam-Carey), trust-fund kid Dennis (Gavin Leatherwood), artist Brooke (Reina Hardesty), and free-spirited Maya (Nina Bloomgarden).

Things get dicey when Forbes (David Thompson) crashes the party; he's an estranged friend no one has seen since a college scandal got him expelled. He arrives carrying a mysterious suitcase containing a device that allows the group to swap consciousnesses. What starts as an innocent party game ("guess who's inside who?") quickly spirals into something much, much darker.

Jardin color-codes and tracks the swaps just enough to help you keep up, but the film is at its most fun when you're completely confused about who is actually who. As the night wears on and everyone stops trusting their own reality, the game begins to feel like a high-stakes hostage situation. Who is really driving each body? And what happens to the people who don't make it back into their own?

Why I recommend streaming 'It's What's Inside'

Most of us have looked at someone else’s life—the prettier one, the richer one, the one who seems to have it all figured out—and wondered what it would be like to trade places. "It's What's Inside" gives its characters the chance to climb inside the exact person they envy most, but it doesn't play out the way any of them expect.

Jardin has noted that the body-swapping is really a metaphor for the curated versions of ourselves we perform online. That might sound heavy, but the movie plays most of its themes for deliciously uncomfortable comedy, keeping you delightfully off-balance as you try to piece together what's actually happening.

It's also one of the best-looking movies Netflix has released recently. Drenched in vivid neon hues, it feels closer to a sleek nightclub experience or a high-concept video game than a standard horror film. Because it actively rewards your full attention, it’s far from a background "fold the laundry" or "scroll on your phone" watch.

"It's What's Inside" is a stylish, mean, and clever little thriller about how well we really know the people we love—and how much we'd change about ourselves if given the chance. If you're looking for something genuinely original for your next movie night, give this one a spin.

With “The End of Oak Street” hitting the big screen this weekend, it’s got movie fans in the mood for anything that features dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures. When you talk about the best dinosaur movies, there’s basically a default answer: “Jurassic Park.” But what about the dino-themed flicks beyond Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic (and its numerous sequels)?

Considering the enduring popularity of dinosaurs, the competition to be the best dinosaur movie not called “Jurassic Park” is surprisingly sparse. Nevertheless, I’ve still been able to round up five movies vying for the title. These range from action-focused efforts to family movies that put a more colorful spin on the long-extinct oversized lizard-like creatures.

So while you won’t find “Jurassic Park” on this list (nor any of the “Jurassic World” movies), here’s the best alternative dinosaur movies to consider streaming this weekend.

‘The Land Before Time’ (1988)

“The Land Before Time” might look like a children’s Saturday morning cartoon, and while it’s definitely a movie suitable for the whole family, don’t be surprised if it has you bawling your eyes out. This animated film gives “Bambi” a run for its money in the “making adults tear up” department. Steven Spielberg also worked as an executive producer on the film, giving it a slight connection to “Jurassic Park.”

The movie centers on Littlefoot, a young herbivorous dinosaur, separated from his herd by an earthquake. Meeting fellow orphaned dinos, Littlefoot and his new pals set out on a quest to locate the fabled Great Valley and be reunited with his family. The good news is that if you enjoy the first “Land Before Time,” then there are 13 (yes, 13!) sequels. Just be aware these are all direct-to-DVD fodder, and don’t match the quality of the original.

‘65’ (2023)

Cards on the table, I’m not a fan of “65.” I even ranked it among my least favorite movies of 2023. But that’s just my personal opinion. I’ve included it on this list because of its respectable 64% viewer score on Rotten Tomatoes, proving that at least some people enjoyed this sci-fi thriller. One of those people would be my colleague Alix Blackburn, who argues it’s “one of the most underrated sci-fi thrillers” and advises you to “ignore the critics.”

Kylo Ren himself, Adam Driver, plays an interstellar astronaut named Mills, who crash-lands on Earth. Only it’s our planet 65 million years in the past. If the bumpy landing that destroyed his craft wasn’t enough to deal with, prehistoric Earth is home to some very dangerous creatures: dinosaurs. Mills faces a desperate battle to find a way home while taking a fellow survivor under his wing, a young girl named Koa (Arriana Greenblatt).

‘King Kong’ (2005)

I’m maybe stretching the definition of a dinosaur movie here. After all, “King Kong” is really about an oversized ape wreaking havoc across NYC. But before he’s transported to the Big Apple, Kong is ruling over Skull Island, a mysterious location that is home to not just the skyscraper-climbing ape but also plenty of dinosaurs. And it’s hard not to have fun watching King Kong punch a pack of dinos in the face. Tell me that doesn’t sound appealing to you?

This epic Peter Jackson movie, which gives his “Lord of the Rings” movies a run for their money with an equally butt-numbingly long runtime, is actually the second remake of the 1933 original. It stars Naomi Watts, Jack Black, Adrien Brody and Andy Serkis, and follows a group of filmmakers in the 1930s as they travel to Skull Island to shoot a movie. Once on location, they encounter King Kong and more exotic dangers on the tropical island.

‘The Good Dinosaur’ (2015)

“The Good Dinosaur” is a memorable movie in Pixar’s canon, but not necessarily for the right reasons. The movie marked the end of the animation studio’s hot streak and became its first box office failure. The family adventure film struggled to recoup its large budget, and its messy development cycle was evident on screen. But it’s still a charming Pixar movie at its core, with strong animation and a cast of likable characters.

Perhaps taking cues from “The Land Before Time,” in “The Good Dinosaur,” a young apatosaurus (those are the dinos with really long necks) named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) is separated from his family during a rainstorm and must team up with a feral child (Jack Bright), whom Arlo happens to blame for the death of his father (Jeffrey Wright), to return home. It’s your classic story of unexpected friendship on a grand adventure.

‘One Million Years B.C.’ (1966)

“One Million Years B.C.” caused quite the stir upon its release in 1966, and it wasn’t because of its big-screen depiction of dinosaurs. Second only to Princess Leia in the iconic swimwear department, Raquel Welch dons a fur-covered bikini, which became an enduring image and was used aggressively in the film's marketing. But looking beyond the uncomfortable objectification of its female lead, this ‘60s movie is still a Hollywood classic.

Naturally, it’s aged considerably in the decades since release, so if you want incredibly lifelike CGI dinosaurs, steer well clear, but if you can appreciate old-school effects, this movie has its charms. It sees a caveman, Tumak (John Richardson), exiled from his tribe, before wooing Loana (Welch) from a rival group. Together they venture out into the harsh prehistoric world and face all sorts of hurdles, including dinosaurs, earthquakes and more.

The X-Men are finally making their long-awaited move into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it looks like the mutants could play a major role in the MCU’s next chapter. Marvel Studios is developing a brand-new “X-Men” movie that will introduce a new generation of the iconic superhero team, following years of speculation about how the characters would eventually be folded into the MCU.

The timing is particularly interesting. While familiar faces from Fox’s “X-Men” movies are set to return in “Avengers: Doomsday,” Marvel’s upcoming reboot is expected to take the franchise in a fresh direction rather than simply continuing the previous movies. “Thunderbolts” director Jake Schreier is attached to helm the project, with Michael Lesslie writing the screenplay.

D23 2026 revealed quite a lot about the upcoming film, but there is still plenty we don’t know, including who will play the rest of the cast and specific story details. However, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that the movie will arrive after “Avengers: Secret Wars,” giving us our first real indication of where the X-Men fit into the MCU’s future.

So, here’s everything we know so far about Marvel’s “X-Men” reboot, including its cast, release date, story and what it could mean for the MCU.

‘X-Men’ reboot release date confirmed

Marvel has now confirmed the release date for its “X-Men” reboot at D23 2026, with the movie set to hit theaters on May 5, 2028. The film is being directed by Jake Schreier and will officially bring Marvel’s mutants into the MCU’s next chapter.

The film is being positioned as part of the MCU’s next era, following “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which is scheduled for December 2027. Kevin Feige has previously confirmed that the X-Men will be recast following the movie, while Schreier’s reboot is expected to introduce a new incarnation of the team.

‘X-Men’ reboot cast

The biggest piece of casting news is actually no longer a rumor: Sadie Sink is Jean Grey. Her role was kept secret during the marketing for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” but the movie revealed her as the iconic mutant, making her the first major member of the new MCU X-Men lineup to be introduced. Sink has also spoken about her conversations with Schreier and preparing for Jean’s future in the MCU.

Beyond Sink, Marvel finally announced some more cast at D23 2026. Kit Connor is playing Scott Summers/Cyclops, while Samara Weaving is Emma Frost.

Christopher Abbott will play as Professor X, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver will also join the cast as the villain Mister Sinister.

While Marvel has now revealed several key characters, Mystique, Magneto and Beast have yet to be officially announced. Before D23, Cailee Spaeny was heavily linked to Rogue and Charles Melton to Beast, although neither casting was confirmed at the event. Melton has also addressed the Beast speculation without confirming the role, so for now, both actors remain firmly in the rumor category (Spaeny could be Mystique).

Feige emphasized that this is only the initial wave of mutant reveals, with additional X-Men character announcements coming in the future.

There’s still a little while to wait before cameras officially start rolling on Marvel’s “X-Men” reboot. Sadie Sink recently confirmed that filming is expected to begin in 2027, meaning the movie is still firmly in the pre-production stage. Sink has also revealed that she is being kept somewhat separate from the casting process for her fellow X-Men, with director Schreier apparently keeping her updated on the team’s development.

Behind the scenes, however, the movie is continuing to take shape. Schreier is directing the reboot, while “Beef” creator Lee Sung Jin and “The Bear” writer Joanna Calo are working on the screenplay. Schreier previously said the team was still developing the movie and that he had been revisiting classic Chris Claremont X-Men comics for inspiration.

With casting now underway and production reportedly targeting 2027, it looks like Marvel is slowly but surely moving the project toward cameras.

‘X-Men’ reboot potential plot ideas

Marvel is keeping the plot of its “X-Men” reboot firmly under wraps, so there’s currently no confirmed storyline. However, comments from the creative team give us a few clues about the direction Marvel could be taking. Schreier has said he has been revisiting Claremont’s classic X-Men comics, while Lee Sung Jin has teased a more character-driven approach that focuses on the team’s relationships and dynamics.

That could mean the reboot explores one of the franchise’s most important themes: mutants feeling like outsiders in a world that fears and misunderstands them. Sung Jin has specifically highlighted the idea of feeling “othered” as something the new movie could continue exploring.

Feige has also previously described the new movie as a “very youth-oriented” project, while Sink has said she thinks focusing on a younger generation of mutants is a smart choice. That could mean the movie follows a group of young mutants who are only just discovering their powers and coming together as a team, rather than introducing the X-Men as an already-established superhero squad.

Sink’s Jean Grey has already been introduced in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” as a young woman struggling to understand and control her abilities, which could provide a natural starting point for the wider story.

Genre: Comedy movie

What's it about? "Shiva Baby" stars Rachel Sennott as Danielle. She's a young bisexual Jewish woman who hasn't exactly figured her life out. That lack of direction is on full display when she's forced to attend a shiva with her parents. But the real scene-stealer is Danielle's successful ex-girlfriend Maya (Molly Gordon), who arrives at the shiva with her sugar daddy Max (Danny Deferrari), his wife Kim (Dianna Agron), and their screaming baby.

Why you should watch it: This movie is funny. You're guaranteed to laugh. It's also one of the movies on Mubi you're most likely to have seen or heard about already, as it has made the rounds on streaming services before and been a hit. I know it's second on the list, but I'd almost advocate watching it first.

'Amores Perros' (2000)

Genre: Spanish-language psychological drama movie

What's it about? "Amores Perros" is constructed of three stories. All three are connected by a car crash in Mexico City. One centers on Octavio (Gael García Bernal), who gets involved in the local dogfighting scene. Another stars Goya Toledo as a model who seriously injures her leg in a car crash with Octavio. The third story is focused on a mysterious hitman (Emilio Echevarría) who is in the middle of a job when Octavio's car crash occurs.

Why you should watch it: This movie is important for two reasons. First, it's a breakout performance for Bernal, who followed it up the following year with Alfonso Cuarón's "Y tu mamá también." It is also the debut film for Alejandro González Iñárritu, who went on to direct "Birdman," "The Revenant," and this year's "Digger." It's an undeniable must-watch.

'Fremont' (2023)

Genre: Drama movie

What's it about? Donya (Anaita Wali Zada) lives in a tight-knit community of Afghan immigrants in Fremont, California. But an appointment with a therapist (Gregg Turkington) and a promotion finally get her to break out and travel, where she meets a quiet auto mechanic (Jeremy Allen White).

Why you should watch it: This film is emotionally balanced and complex, and Zada's performance has earned significant praise from critics. Plus, you get some Jeremy Allen White, and not in a kitchen or as a CGI Hutt. So that's a nice bonus.

'The Substance' (2024)

Genre: Body horror movie

What's it about? "The Substance" stars Demi Moore as a fading celebrity who turns to a black market drug after her producer (Dennis Quaid) fires her. That drug creates a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley), and this version is still worthy of Hollywood. But the drug comes with some serious side effects.

Why you should watch it: One could argue I saved the best for last here. I loved this movie, though my hot take might be that Quaid sneakily gives the best performance in it. If you're squeamish, you might not be able to handle it. But otherwise, you need to watch it, whether you're a horror fan or not.
