It's spooky season, and while I kicked things off early by re-watching "Practical Magic" a few weeks back, I have to admit I've been a bit left behind with any further preparations this year. This week I'm rectifying that: The kids and I have made some low-key spooky artworks, and my eldest and I walked the neighborhood this morning checking out the best yard decorations (though none were a patch on my colleague Mike Prospero's trio of 12, 15 and 20-foot skeletons. Yikes).

November is officially here, so it’s time for cool fall nights spent watching shows and movies on the best streaming services, and avoiding frigid outdoor temperatures if you live in a cold climate. HBO Max has a stacked lineup to make the most of that couch time.

Everything gets going on November 1 with "The Gilded Age" season 4. On the same day, "Youth" season 1 wraps up with its finale. A slew of popular films also kick off the month, with some fantastic Christmas movies like "A Christmas Carol" and "A Christmas Story" leading the charge. 'The Gilded Age' season 4

"The Gilded Age" starting its fourth season is without a doubt the main event of HBO Max's November offerings. I hate to admit it, but I haven't seen any of "The Gilded Age" myself. Based on the trailer and my research for this article, I must check it out. I love a period drama set in late-19th century New York City. The lead cast includes Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski, and reviews say they all do a tremendous job of making the show feel period-accurate.

'City Of God: The Fight Rages On' season 2

"City of God: The Fight Rages On" follows up on the 2002 film "City of God." It's just as intense as the full-length feature. Now back for its second season, director Aly Muritiba dives deeper into the intense conflicts between the police, drug dealers and militias in the favela and how it affects the community. It's a heavy watch, but the writing and translations are solid, and it is entertaining despite feeling very real and authentic.

'When a Witness Recants'

Nothing beats sinking your teeth into a good documentary, even when the subject matter isn't always easy to handle emotionally. This is one that looks to be emotionally charged, covering the story of Andrew Stewart, Ransom Watkins, and Alfred Chestnut, who were wrongly convicted of the 1983 murder of 14-year-old DeWitt Duckett. The trio spent 36 years in prison for a crime they did not commit, and the documentary dives into all the painful details. It won't be an easy watch, but it'll suck you in through to the end, especially given the praise it's getting in screenings and at Sundance.

‘They Will Kill You’ (Nov. 20)

It stars Zazie Beetz as Asia, an ex-convict who takes a housekeeping job at a swanky New York high-rise called the Virgil to track down her missing sister. There's just one problem: The building is a 12-story death trap run by a Satanic cult. Fortunately for her, she’s far more dangerous than anyone expects, and she fights her way through the carnage as best she can, which makes for a bloody good time for fans of movies like "Ready or Not."

‘Clashing Through the Snow’ (Nov. 23)

This cozy holiday rom-com strands two rival publishing editors, played by Christopher Briney (“The Summer I Turned Pretty”) and Michelle Randolph (“Landman”), at a snowed-in airport and forces them to share a rental car all the way to New York. The catch is that they’re secretly competing for the same career-saving book deal, which makes their road trip more tense than you might have guessed. The movie has a scene-stealing supporting cast that includes Lukas Gage, Julia Fox and Paris Hilton, and it's perfect for settling into the winter holidays.

‘Blade Runner 2099’ (Nov. 25)

The world of "Blade Runner" expands onto the small screen with this ambitious new series. Set 50 years after the events of "Blade Runner 2049," "Blade Runner 2099" imagines a Los Angeles reshaped by the artificial humans known as replicants. Michelle Yeoh is an aging replicant Blade Runner, with Hunter Schafer as Cora, a fugitive who takes on the identity of a Blade Runner in one last bid to stop running. Head coach Xabi Alonso will be without the Argentine and Brazilian at Anfield again, so that will afford Penders another chance, while Estevao may get a rare chance under Alonso.

Apple has capped off its week of "Pro and tell" announcements by unveiling the long-awaited touchscreen MacBook Pro OLED. In what could be the biggest update to MacBook Pro lineup since its inception twenty years ago, we now have a tandem OLED display on Apple's premium laptop for the first time.

In addition, Apple has dropped the notch in favor of an all-new Dynamic Island similar to what we're used to on the best iPhones. And guess what, the illuminated Apple logo on the lid is back!

Tom's Guide is in attendance at Apple's "Pro and tell" showcase in LA today, and we'll bring you our full reaction and hands-on with the new MacBook Pro OLED imminently. In the meantime, check out our live blog right here.

Specs

Price and release date

We’ll get the bad news out of the way first, the MacBook Pro OLED is set to start at $2,899 for the base-level 14-inch spec with the M5 Pro and rise to $3,399 for the 16-inch model.

If you want to go for the M5 Max spec, the starting price for the 14-inch version will set you back $4,499 while the 16-inch model is $4,799.

Pre-orders begin today, Wednesday, October 28, with shipping (and in-store availability) due to start on November 6.

That’s a serious chunk of change compared to the $1,999 starting price of the M6 MacBook Pro announced yesterday. It’s the highest starting price of any MacBook Pro model, surpassing the $2,799 price of the 17-inch model Apple revealed in 2006.

PROLED XDR Display with touch

Here’s why you’re going to be paying a premium for this laptop — it’s the step-up in display quality that we’ve been hoping for for years. Apple has named this device the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and claims the laptop "offers a visual experience unlike any other."

We're talking about a tandem OLED panel that will outshine and outclass the mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR panel on the regular MacBook Pro. Users will get true per-pixel blacks and zero blooming around UI elements on this display.

Apple can push this display to peak HDR brightness of 2000 nits and for anyone who uses a MacBook Pro for visual creative work, this is going to be a game-changer.

"PROLED XDR is the world’s best laptop display, delivering true-to-life color and unparalleled brightness and contrast," Apple's press release explains.

"The PROLED XDR display offers tandem OLED technology unlike any other, with deep innovations in its layers that keep brightness and grayscale uniform across the entire display, while minimizing internal reflections common in traditional OLED designs.

"It’s all backed by advanced algorithms in the display engine that precisely control each pixel in real time, plus a meticulous manufacturing process and precise calibration of every panel for consistency from display to display."

In addition, the notch cutout that Apple introduced in 2021 has been replaced with a true Dynamic Island, just like you’ll find on the iPhone. This will bring Live Activities to the MacBook for the first time.

And finally, despite what Steve Jobs may have said, the MacBook now has touch input for the first time.

Apple says it's crafted touch input specifically for the Mac, with a touch sensor built directly into the display panel — not layered on top of it.

"Everyday tasks are simple and intuitive, allowing users to scroll through a webpage with a natural swipe; pinch to zoom in on a photo; drag and drop slides from one presentation to another; and double-tap a window to fill the screen, or flick to tile it into place," Apple wrote.

Design

Apple has made a few notable changes to the traditional design of the MacBook Pro, as a result of the new display. Because OLED panels don’t require the same backlight array, the company has been able to make the chassis thinner and lighter than its non-OLED counterparts.

With slimmer display borders, the 16-inch display now grows to 16.3 inches, while the 14-inch display delivers a more portable 14.2-inch design. What's more, this iteration of MacBook Pro is lighter, with the 14-inch weighing half a pound less at three pounds. The 16-inch version tips the scales at just four pounds.

Rumors before the event were that Apple has redesigned and stiffened the hinge to avoid the dreaded wobble when you reach up and touch the screen. It's something we'll be testing for in our hands-on.

The new MacBook Pro includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe, and a headphone jack. In addition to the PROLED XDR display, it supports up to three external displays with M5 Pro and up to four with M5 Max. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 are on board, as you'd expect.

Oh, and probably the most talked-about update to the design — the Apple logo glows. It feels like 2008 all over again!

macOS 27 Golden Gate

Apple has taken a leaf from the iPhone Duo book and made some subtle changes to macOS to optimise it for touchscreen input. The company says its own apps are optimized for the new MacBook Pro, and many existing apps work with Touch right away, because macOS automatically translates touches into clicks.

We don't know exactly how it's been implemented yet, but I hope we get context-aware touch scaling that means when you reach out to touch the display, target hitboxes will dynamically expand while context menus appear enlarged around your fingers.

Interactions familiar from iOS and iPadOS should be included, such as pull-to-refresh across native apps, multi-touch zooming, pinch-to-navigate in Safari, and direct scrubbing across timelines in creative suites like Final Cut Pro and Logic.

Of course, the MacBook Pro OLED’s full Force Touch trackpad continues to serve as the primary input, but having the option to interact directly with the screen is long overdue.

"Graphic designers can now use the entire display as their canvas, no longer constrained by the area of the trackpad when drawing; musicians can play software instruments right onscreen; and app developers can test how Touch performs in their iOS and iPadOS apps directly on the MacBook Pro display," Apple said.

Performance and power

The MacBook Pro OLED will ship with the M5 Pro / M5 Max chipset rather than the newer M6 processor in the non-OLED MacBook Pro. That may seem counter-intuitive but it’s a question of use cases. The M6 is more performant for single-core speeds but the Pro / Max delivers faster data transfer and better multitasking.

The MacBook Pro OLED is now configurable with up to 128GB of unified memory and now up to 16TB of storage.

Outlook

MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is almost certain to prove a huge hit, despite those wallet-trembling price points.

The combination of an OLED touchscreen display on a MacBook for the first time, not to mention a slimmer and lighter profile as well as the ability to cram even more memory and storage into the chassis are what a lot of Apple users have been asking for. It still keeps the 12MP Center Stage camera tucked inside that Dynamic Island, though.

We’ll be getting hands-on with it as soon as possible and, following that, we’ll be putting the MacBook Pro OLED through our usual battery of lab tests when we get one in for review. After debuting at Made by Google earlier this year, Xreal's wired XR smart glasses are finally launching today, October. 28. The glasses are a partnership between Google, Qualcomm and Xreal powered by Google's Android XR platform and Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite chipset.

The new glasses are only launching in the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea. Xreal says that the Aura glasses are expected to ship in mid-November.

Nicely, for a limited time, you can order the new glasses for $1,099, for the 256GB version with 12GB of RAM. That's $200 less than the announced normal price of $1,299. The 16GB/512GB configuration is on sale for $1,299.

“This is a defining moment for XR. We built AURA for people who want the power of spatial computing without being removed from the world around them," Xreal co-founder and CEO Chi Xu said in a press release.

Xreal Aura features

Compared to other display glasses like the Xreal One Pro Plus, the Aura is built for spatial computing, similar to the recently announced Meta VR Glasses. And with the launch sale, they're cheaper than Meta glasses, which aren't launching until spring 2027.

Xreal's glasses weigh under 95 grams, largely because the chips and battery are in a separate compute puck. The puck enables gesture controls but can also be used as a trackpad for navigation.

The lenses feature Sony micro-OLED prisms capable of a 70-degree field of view and 1200p resolution at 120Hz.

We've gone hands-on with the Xreal Aura a couple of times and found them pretty impressive. A personal favorite is the Aura's ability to connect directly to the Nintendo Switch over USB-C, something no other smart glasses can do without separate accessories or docks.

Accessories

As part of the launch announcement, Xreal revealed two new accessories we haven't seen before.

The ecosystem includes an Xreal game controller designed in collaboration with GameSir. The controller has a dedicated Gemini key so you can quickly access AI assistance if you want.

There's also a wireless portable keyboard for those who want to use the Aura for work and multi-window productivity setups.

Xreal did not announce prices or release dates for the accessories. We asked for more information here and will update if the company responds.

Price and availability

Both versions of the Xreal Aura are available for pre-order now with a ship date of mid-November. Xreal is offering them for $200 off their normal price through December 2026.

The 12GB/256GB version is $1,099. The 16GB/512GB is on sale for $1,299.

You can order it via the Xreal.com/aura store or at BestBuy.com. Expanded retail store availability will come to select Google Store locations in the US and Japan next year.

Google DeepMind, the tech giant’s primary AI research and development laboratory, has played a major part in the development of Genie, a world model that’s capable of generating interactive virtual worlds.

The original Genie model launched back in March 2024 and was initially powerful enough to generate two-dimensional environments. Then in December 2024, Genie 2 came out and added the ability to generate three-dimensional worlds. Around August 2025, Genie 3 made its debut and gave users the ability to generate and modify both types of interactive worlds in real time.

This month marks the launch of Genie 4 in research preview mode, which is promised by Google to be able to generate the most photorealistic and interactive worlds to date. What makes it stand out from its predecessors is how it lets users type out prompts mid-simulation to change the scene. Also, Genie 4 can generate real-time audio that matches and syncs up with the simulated world that’s been created, which includes music, ambient sounds and interactive dialogue.

With Genie 4’s expanded capabilities tied to its interactive worlds, it could have a major impact on the way video games are created by its talented developer community.

Real-time, interactive world creation and so much more

Google has already explained how game developers have been utilizing Genie 4:

“Game developers and creative technologists are testing Genie 4 to go from an initial idea to an explorable prototype in seconds, testing visual styles, material aesthetics, and interactive mechanics through natural language prompts before writing a single line of engine code.”

Genie 4’s biggest promise is giving users the ability to generate the type of AI-generated worlds that they can actively experience, which could go a long way toward game developers creating instant mockups of what they're envisioning. And it could lead to a future where the most creative game developers could use Genie 4 to turn their fantastical ideas into playable prototypes in just a few seconds.

I could envision a world where Genie 4’s mass availability leads to game developers experimenting with their environmental and character concepts through a simple prompt instead of having to create them themselves. For indie studios that don’t have the finances to create all those resources on their own, Genie 4 could give them the freedom to bring their standout ideas to life, tinkering with it and taking everything they learn from it to apply their development expertise to turning those ideas into commercial video game releases.

I could also see Genie 4 leading to game development cycles getting a bit shorter, as game developers can perform faster prototyping tasks just by prompting. For example, a developer could test unusual and out-of-the-box mechanics in Genie 4 to see how they interact with the world they’ve generated at large before fully investing in developing them for their game’s world. Experimenting with character interactions & dialogue and creating dynamic visual & audio scenes as proofs of concept could also be a huge boon to game makers if Genie 4’s capabilities expand to an even more impressive level.

Currently, Genie 4 has begun rolling out as a research preview tool specifically catered to professionals within the creative, journalism, education, gaming and engineering industries. Over time, it will become available for Google AI Ultra subscribers through Project Genie. Early access will come to users through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio tools. General availability for Genie 4 has not been announced yet, but you can sign up for access through its waitlist.

The takeaway

Game development engines such as Unreal Engine and Unity provide game makers with the tools they need to build and ship the games you regularly play.

If Genie 4’s power to quickly generate and modify interactive worlds takes off among the game development community, I could see a far-flung future where they use traditional game engines and Genie 4 in conjunction with each other to bring their playable concepts to life.

Generating and adapting interactive experiences on demand with Genie 4 sounds great. But it’ll need a lot more problems solved before it hopes to become a mainstream video game development tool, such as figuring out the best ways to use Genie 4 to produce consistency, control and performance for its world’s mechanics, characters and NPC interactions.

It's been a big week for Macs, with Apple announcing the new MacBook Pro M6, iMac M6 and, more than likely, the very first touchscreen MacBook Pro. But this definitely isn't the end of Apple's computing ambitions, and word is that early 2027 could see the launch of two new MacBooks, including the MacBook Neo 2.

This news comes courtesy of Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, who claims that Apple is working on new versions of both the MacBook Neo and MacBook Air. These two machines are expected to arrive in the first half of next year, but sadly Gurman doesn't divulge any additional details about either of them.

Gurman refers to the updated machines as "refreshed," which I understand to mean very little in the way of meaningful design changes. My assumption is backed up by rumors that a major OLED redesign is coming at some point in 2028.

That'll be disappointing for some, considering we've had the same Air design for the past few years. But we should still expect the usual slew of upgrades, including an M6 chip and all the associated performance and battery upgrades that new hardware offers.

The MacBook Neo is likely to get similarly iterative upgrades. Considering how cheap the laptop was at launch, and the fact that Apple has had to raise the price due to skyrocketing RAM costs, it seems unlikely we'll see any major changes made to the Neo. Meaning all those cost-saving design choices are likely to stick around for a little while longer.

Gurman has previously claimed that the second generation will feature the A19 Pro chip, an increased 12GB of RAM and a bunch of new color options. It's unclear whether 12GB will be the standard amount of memory, or if it will be an optional upgrade for those willing to pay more — like Touch ID on the current Neo model.

Considering the skyrocketing price of RAM, and the fact the MacBook Neo has already suffered a value-reducing price hike, my money is on the latter.

As for when we might see these new machines, a smart bet would be March 2027 — or some time around then. Both the MacBook Neo and MacBook Air M5 were released in March of this year, and it makes sense that Apple would follow that same release pattern for their successors. Especially since spring is generally a pretty quiet month for Apple.

We'll have to wait and see how this all pans out, and what future rumors have to say about both machines.

Once upon a time, the Amazon Echo Dot was the company's least expensive smart speaker, selling for $50 or less during Black Friday. Those days are long gone, but Amazon thinks it's added enough to the new Echo Dot to justify its new price of $99.

The sixth-generation Echo Dot, which comes four years after its predecessor, has a similar design, with an acoustic fabric covering the front of the speaker, and a hard plastic shell around the back. The Alexa bar — the small LED strip that lets you know when the AI is listening — is now just a small arc in the front, rather than a circle running around the bottom of the device. Maybe Amazon thought it looked a bit too much like the Google Home Speaker?

Despite the outward similarities, Amazon has beefed up the internals of the Echo Dot. It has a marginally larger full-range driver (1.75 inches vs. 1.73 inches) that the company says will deliver crisper vocals and 50% more bass than the previous generation. Its new A23 processor is also better suited for handling on-device Alexa+ requests, so that you'll get faster responses.

And, the addition of a fourth microphone means that Alexa+ should be able to more easily pick up your voice, even if the room is noisy.

While the previous Echo Dot had both presence and temperature sensors, the newest model has Amazon's Omnisense sensor, which is basically those two sensors in one, but also uses AI to help provide more proactive suggestions.

As before, the Echo Dot has an Eero Wi-Fi extender built in, and supports Zigbee, Matter, and Thread. However, it has a hub built into the speaker itself, so it should be easier to further extend your smart home network.

The Echo Dot goes on sale today (Oct. 28) for $99, and is available in Graphite, Glacier White, Agave Green, and Coral Pink. The Amazon Kids Echo Dot, which comes in Octopus and Penguin, starts at $109.99.

Amazon Echo Studio with Camera

Amazon is also adding a camera to its top-end smart speaker; this will most likely appeal to those who have a Fire TV device, and want to upgrade their speakers. You can already use the Echo Studios as output devices for your Fire TV (I hooked up four Echo Studios to create a full surround system), but the Echo Studio with Camera enables one more feature.

Now, if you say "Alexa, call my mom," it will initiate a video call using your Fire TV device and the camera in the Echo Studio. This way, you can both see your caller and be seen by them. During the demo, Amazon executive Panos Panay made a video call to his parents, who seemed both bemused and a little befuddled (it was pretty early in the day for them).

However, you can also use the camera in conjunction with Alexa+, and have it identify objects, something Amazon said could be helpful for those with vision impairments.

The Echo Studio with Home Camera costs $249 — $30 more than the regular Echo Studio — and available in Graphite. You can buy a stand for the Studio separately for $39.

Over the years, Amazon has released several Echo Dot-like smart speakers with miniature displays, which were mostly designed to show you the time and weather. There was the Echo Dot with Clock (a design we loved) as well as the slightly more involved Echo Spot.

With the new Amazon Echo Time, the company is reviving the look of the original Echo Spot, packing a circular touchscreen into an orb-like smart speaker, in the hopes that it can reclaim an *ahem* spot on your nightstand.

Price and release date

The Echo Time goes on sale today (Oct. 28) for $199.99. You can get it in Graphite, Glacier White, and Coral Pink. Amazon also sells matching adjustable stands for $39.

Like other Echo devices, there's a kid's version of the Echo Time that costs $209, and includes a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+. The Amazon Kids Echo Time comes in Galactic Grape and Cosmic Lime.

A customizable clock face

The standout feature of the Echo Time is the 3.2-inch display; the Time comes with hundreds of clock faces, all of which are customizable. Among the faces are ones for sports teams as well as other licensed properties like Harry Potter and the DC Universe.

The Echo Time's display also changes throughout the day, so as better to incorporate your natural cycles; it slowly brightens in the morning, and at night it dims automatically and reduces is blue light output to help you fall asleep more easily.

A smarter alarm

Similar to its newer Echo smart speakers, the Echo Time has Amazon's Omnisense sensor array, which can detect things such as presence and temperature, along with an ultrasound sensor to monitor for breathing.

Alexa+ uses these sensors to monitor your sleep, and can then adjust your desired wake-up time from 10 to 60 minutes, tailoring it for what it thinks is the optimal time to get you out of bed.

If you have other smart home devices, you can also add them to your wakeup routine, such as having a bedside light slowly turn on.

At $199, the Echo Time isn't cheap; the current Echo Spot costs half as much, and also serves its function well, and you get all the same Alexa+ functionality — it even acts as an Eero Wi-Fi extender. However, the Echo Time could appeal to those who want something that can better monitor their sleep, and make sure they wake up at the right time.

Over the years, Amazon has come out with a bunch of really goofy products with Alexa inside: fashion assistants, wall clocks, light-up buttons, and even a smart ring. Yet, it's taken until now for the company to release a smart photo frame.

Perhaps the wait was worth it. While the new Alexa Photo Frame doesn't break any new ground design-wise when compared with the best digital photo frames, Amazon is using Alexa+ to intelligently curate all of those photos you have stored on your phone or elsewhere. You actually might finally see that picture you took during you vacation to Aruba five years ago.

The Alexa Photo Frame looks like your standard digital photo frame. It has a 10-inch, 1280 x 800 anti-glare touchscreen, and comes in three finishes: black plastic ($199), or birch or walnut wood frames, which cost $229. All models are available starting today (Oct. 28).

However, once you set up the photo frame, Alexa+ will start to work its magic. First, it will analyze all of the pictures in your library, and then its classifies them based on who's in the pictures, what people are doing, the time of year it was taken, and more.

Then, it will display the photos on the Frame based on factors like the time of year. So, for example, you'd see holiday photos in December, and beach pictures in the summer.

But, Alexa+ can also understand context, so it might pull two pictures of your kid, taken years apart, of them doing a similar activity, and display them side-by-side.

Of course, you can also curate what appears on the Frame, or if you decide to gift a frame to a parent or loved one. So if you give one to your parents, you can make sure that they only see pictures of your kids, for instance.

Also, if you want to tug at the heartstrings a little more, you can also attach audio clips to photos, so that when you tap on a picture on-screen, grandparents can hear their grandkids wishing them well.

The Alexa Photo Frame also acts as a smart speaker — not that you'd want to play music on it — so you could ask Alexa+ to display photos of your dog at a park, or pictures from a particular year.

Like other Alexa devices, you can turn off the microphone on the Photo Frame, select the notifications you receive, adjust the brightness of the screen, and more. However, it only works in landscape mode.

While the Alexa Photo Frame can be used by anyone, it makes the most sense for those who are Amazon Prime members, as they can store an unlimited number of photos in the cloud, and use certain Alexa+ features as part of their subscription. If you don't have a Prime subscription, you get 5GB of free cloud storage, with plans starting at $1.99/month for 100GB of storage.

At $199, the Alexa Photo Frame is priced competitively with some of our favorite models. For example, the Aura Aspen, which is a 12-inch model, costs $229. Coming in time for the holidays, I can easily see this being a popular gifting item.

When Amazon lifted the veil off its new Echo Show 16, I thought I was looking at a miniaturized version of Apple's Studio Display. But no, I was looking at Amazon's newest smart display, one that looks like it could beat the HomeView in more ways than one.

I had a chance to check out the Amazon Echo Show 16, which is available for preorder starting today (Oct. 28), and will ship later this year. Here's how Amazon's newest smart display really distinguishes itself from the pack — even if its starting price of $499 could make it a reach for some.

Price and availability

The Echo Show 16 is available for preorder starting today (Oct. 28) at Amazon.com, and will ship on December 16. The model with the standard glossy display costs $499, while the Nanomatte display is $569. If you preorder the device, you can get $100 off the price.

If you're not planning to wall mount the device, a swivel stand is available for $69, and a swivel-and-tilt stand costs $124.

Design

The Echo Show 16 is the most refined smart display from Amazon I've seen; the panel itself isn't as thin as the Echo Show 8 or Echo Show 10, but that's because the speakers are housed behind the display, rather than sitting in a bulbous base. As a result, the Echo Show 16 looks more like something you'd connect to your desktop, rather than a standalone device.

The rear of the Echo Show 16 is thicker than most other tablets, as it houses eight subwoofers. Around the front is a 13MP camera, which has a digital zoom to keep you in frame if you're moving around.

The screen itself measures 16 inches diagonally, and has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Like the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro tablet, you can get the Echo Show 16 with either a glossy finish, or with a nanomatte display, which cuts down on glare.

Sadly, the aluminum stand costs $69 extra, so unless you plan to wall-mount it, you'll have to cough up a little more.

A redesigned Alexa + interface

Amazon has once again redesigned the interface on its Echo Shows, this time making Alexa+ more prominent. Now, all Alexa+ interactions are saved as "cards" which are displayed as a widget on the screen. Tap on the card, and it expands to show you the transcript from that interaction, as well as supporting documents, images and links.

For example, if you ask Alexa+ how to grow tomatoes, it might present cards for different types of tomatoes, tips on watering, fertilizing, and which might grow best in your area.

Alexa+ will then organize all of the cards by type, theme, date, or any other categorization it thinks is appropriate, so you can more easily find them at a later time. A special Card gallery shows all of them at a glance.

Amazon's Alexa+ smartphone app will also get a similar treatment; by design, any cards you create on your phone will stay there until you share them with the Echo Show.

The Calendar view — now called Family Organizer — also sees a refresh. In addition to showing everyone's schedule, there's now a tab for meal planning, so you can lay out everything you want to cook for the week.

Smarter home view

For those with a lot of smart home devices, the Echo Show's new Home Map takes what's currently available to the next level. Now, all of your smart home devices are displayed in a 3D map of your house, where you can view, arrange, and control all of them.

For example, if there's a smart light in a bedroom, you can tap on the icon to turn the light on and off, dim it, or change its color, if that's an option. Cleverly, the icon on the screen will also reflect the current state of the device — so, if a light is glowing red, its icon will also have a reddish halo. Or, if a smart speaker is playing music, the screen will show you the song title.

If you have Ring cameras, the Home Map will show icons of people and vehicles around your house moving in real time, based on what the cameras are seeing. If you have familiar faces enabled in the Ring app, the Home Map will also identify those people, too. An Amazon rep said that Blink integration was also coming in the future. I found it to be both cool and a bit creepy — kind of like a high-tech Marauder's Map from Harry Potter.

Fire TV

Like previous Echo Shows, the 16 also acts as a Fire TV device, making it really well suited for those who want a small TV in their kitchen. Like the Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21, the Echo Show 16 will also ship with a Fire TV remote, so that you don't have to rely on touch or voice to find the show you're looking for.

Of all of the Echo Show features I've used over the years, it's probably the one I've used the most.

Outlook

The hardware design of the new Echo Show 16 is impressive, but it's the new interface that might just have won me over. While I still want to take more time to really dive into it, I liked how it shows all of your interactions with Alexa+ in a smart, easily accessible way. I am curious to see how easy it will be to find everything once you have a lot of saved prompts, but it looks like Amazon has found a smart way to show everything on the screen. The new smart home interface also looks like it should make it much easier for me to manage all my devices.

This same interface will be rolling out to other Echo Show devices, so you don't need to rush out and buy the new Echo Show 16, unless you want the new design or the nanomatte display. We hope to get one in soon to test, so stay tuned.

And I say that as a huge fan of the genre who's seen tons of horror movies over the years.

Whether you're in the mood for supernatural scares, deeply unsettling folk horror or a brutal slasher, I've picked out three underrated horror movies you can stream on Plex right now without paying a dime.

From the nightmarish twists of "Talk to Me" to the sun-drenched dread of "Midsommar" and Rob Zombie's peak aughts vibes in his divisive 2007 "Halloween" remake, these horror movies deserve a spot on your watchlist — just don't blame us when you have to sleep with the lights on.

'Talk to Me' (2022)

"Talk to Me's" haunting mother-daughter story hit me at exactly the right time; after wowing audiences in Australia, it landed in theaters stateside in 2023 just a few months after my mom passed away. It follows a group of friends who play a "Bloody Mary" style party game with an embalmed hand, only to discover it's actually a ritual for summoning spirits. As hokey as I found the premise at first, "Talk to Me" ended up being one of the best horror movies I'd seen in years — something its 94% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes speaks to.

At first, the friends are thrilled to let spirits temporarily possess their bodies, treating it like a game. That is, until Mia (Sophie Wilde), a teenager still grieving the death of her mom, accidentally takes things too far and unleashes something far more sinister. With the boundary between the living and the dead wearing thin, their reality unravels into a waking nightmare as Mia and co. scramble to make things right.

'Midsommar' (2019)

Have I already plugged Ari Aster's phenomenal "Midsommar" multiple times in this month's column of free movies to stream? You bet your ass. And I shall continue to yap about how good it is — at least until spooky season is over. One of my all-time favorite horror movies, "Midsommar" is a disturbing descent into the dangers of groupthink that can lead desperate folks to leave their humanity behind. Aster dramatically breaks away from the usual horror aesthetic, setting the bulk of the movie in a picturesque meadow under the bright Swedish summer sun.

Florence Pugh stuns as a final girl for the history books: Dani, a grieving American student who tags along on a trip to a remote Swedish village with her boyfriend and his friends to experience a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival. At first, the community seems welcoming, and its unusual traditions intrigue more than terrify. But as the festivities continue, things take a bloody turn, and members of the group begin disappearing. I joke that this is the perfect girls' night horror movie, though if gore isn't your thing (it really ain't mine either; I just keep my eyes closed for those parts), you may want to skip this one.

'Rob Zombie’s Halloween' (2007)

I'm not a die-hard "Halloween" fan by any means, which may explain why I have a soft spot for Rob Zombie's ill-judged remake just as much as I do for John Carpenter's original 1978 masterpiece. I have a lot of nostalgia for slasher movies in their messiest era, and I think Zombie’s more reflective take on Michael Myers is far more interesting than it gets credit for. The 2007 "Halloween" remake fleshes out the killer with a moody backstory that's peak aughts, showing a young Michael (Daeg Faerch) neglected and bullied as his mother Deborah (Sheri Moon Zombie) struggles to protect him.

One Halloween night, Michael finally snaps, leaving his family shattered while he's carted off to a psych ward. Under the care of Dr. Samuel Loomis (Malcolm McDowell), Michael retreats into an unsettling silence over the years. Seventeen years later, the grown Michael (Tyler Mane) escapes and stalks through his hometown in search of his baby sister, who was adopted and raised as Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton). As Michael carves another bloody path on Halloween night, Loomis races to track down his former patient before Laurie and her friends become his next victims.

Netflix has confirmed its slate for November 2026, and the holiday season starts here. ‘A Dog’s Perfect Christmas’

What it's about: Based on the novel by W. Bruce Cameron, author of “A Dog’s Purpose,” this holiday flick centers on the Goss family, whose festive season is blighted by a medical emergency. With the humans at their breaking point, it’s up to the family’s wise old basset hound, Winstead (voiced by Thomas Haden Church), to bring the Goss clan back together.

Why you should watch it: Netflix’s holiday slate is packed this year, and “A Dog’s Perfect Christmas” marks the streamer's first festive flick of 2026. It’s sure to get you in the festive mood and will no doubt tug on the heartstrings of dog owners. Milo Ventimiglia and Dennis Quaid star, both veterans of the dog drama genre. Quaid actually featured in the “A Dog’s Purpose” movie (and its sequel), but plays a new character here.

‘Black Doves’ season 2

What it's about: Spy-for-hire Helen (Keira Knightley) returns in season 2 of Netflix’s winter-set action-thriller series. Still working for the covert organization Black Doves, and with her husband, Wallace (Andrew Buchan), set to become U.K. prime minister, she’s reunited with her old friend, Sam (Ben Whishaw), for an even more dangerous mission.

Why you should watch it: “Black Doves” is a very different kind of festive offering, trading holiday cheese for a gripping spy thriller series. Knightley, Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire all return from season 1, with new cast members including Ambika Mod, Babou Ceesay, Sam Riley and Neve Campbell. Netflix is promising a season with higher stakes where loyalties will be tested, trust shattered, and the Black Doves organization explored further.

‘Heartland’

What it's about: Oscar-winning Jessica Chastain stars in this mystery thriller set in the world of country music. Misty Jones (Chastain) is a retired country singer who emerges from reclusion to investigate the disappearance of her niece (Carter Faith), a rising star on the country scene. Misty’s quest for answers drags her into Nashville’s underbelly.

Why you should watch it: Usually when a mystery thriller movie explores a city’s seedy underbelly, it’s L.A. or New York, so “Heartland’s” trip into the less glamorous side of Music City is a refreshing twist. Having Chastain in the lead role also helps, even if the nuts and bolts of this thriller — investigating a disappearance — sound a little formulaic.

‘The Altruists’

What it's about: From showrunner Graham Moore (writer of “The Imitation Game”) comes “The Altruists,” a limited series that dramatizes the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX. Starring Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle as Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried, respectively, it’s a story of self-proclaimed financial disruptors who proved to be fraudsters, accused of stealing $8 billion and labeled the Bonnie and Clyde of the online generation.

Why you should watch it: The recent box office failure of “The Social Reckoning” may suggest there’s little appetite for dramatic retellings of online-centric wrongdoing, but “The Altruists” might have a better shot at success because it appears to be hooking its story on the toxic relationship between its two lead characters. The drama series will chronicle the rise of the FTX platform before its swift fall as the lovers’ fraud is exposed.

‘Steps’

What it's about: “Steps” is the classic Cinderella story, but not as you know it. Cinders (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) isn’t the lead this time. Instead, the hero of this animated family adventure is Lilith (Ali Wong), Cinderella’s misunderstood stepsister. When Lilith accidentally transforms her sister, Margot (Stephanie Hsu), into a frog, and the kingdom is thrown into turmoil, the well-known tale is rewritten. Now, the stepsister usually cast as a villain has to become a hero.

Why you should watch it: Classic fairy tales retold from a different perspective, typically reframing a previously villainous character as a misunderstood (anti-)hero, are nothing new, but what “Steps” lacks in originality, it might make up for with charming fantasy musical fun. It also releases just a few days before Disney’s animated tentpole “Hexed” hits theaters, so "Steps" could function as a more cost-effective watch for families over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro M6 is here! This year’s model features the new Apple M6 chip, promising faster performance and longer battery life. And thanks to the Apple N1 chip inside, this laptop supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. However, due to Apple's price hikes, this entry-level MacBook Pro now starts at $1,999.

The new MacBook Pro M6 has all the updates we’ve come to expect from yearly iterations. That raises the question: is it a meaningful upgrade over the MacBook Pro M5? To answer that, I’ll outline all the upgrades and what has stayed the same to help you decide whether you need to upgrade.

Here are the biggest upgrades between the MacBook Pro M6 and the MacBook Pro M5 that you need to know.

MacBook Pro M6 vs MacBook Pro M5: What’s different?

Price

The first big difference between the new MacBook Pro and the previous model is the starting price. As I said in the intro, this new MacBook Pro is significantly more expensive.

Whereas the M5 MacBook Pro originally cost $1,599, the new model starts at $1,999. While that’s actually the current price of the M5 MacBook Pro, thanks to RAMageddon, that’s a small consolation. And of course, choosing more storage and RAM will bump up the price even further.

Apple M6 chip

Next up is the inclusion of an Apple M6. Like the A20 Pro chip in the iPhone Duo, this new processor is based on TSMC’s 2-nanometer architecture that’s meant to deliver notable power and efficiency gains over M5. Based on our testing of both chips, said gains should be around 10-15%.

Compared to the M5 chip's 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, the M6 upgrades both by adding two extra cores each. It also incorporates a Dual 16-core Neural Engine designed for machine learning and AI tasks.

Apple says that the 12-core GPU delivers up to 25 percent faster AI performance and up to 30 percent faster graphics processing than the M5.

Furthermore, the Neural Engine is enhanced by dedicated Neural Accelerators built into each GPU core, giving the M6 MacBook Pro a substantial edge when running AI-driven creative software.

While we need to bring the MacBook Pro M6 into our lab to see what it can do, we have a sense of what to expect from our testing of the new Mac mini M6. As you can see above, there are noticeable performance gains, though nothing earth-shattering. That said, you’ll certainly feel the difference if you’re still using an M1 or M2 MacBook Pro.

Connectivity and battery life

Connectivity also gets a nice upgrade on the MacBook Pro M6, as this model features Apple's N1 chip, which supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

This delivers higher throughput and lower networking latency than the previous model’s Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. On top of that, Bluetooth 6 offers better power efficiency and enhanced location tracking for wireless peripherals, such as headphones and game controllers.

Speaking of power efficiency, Apple claims the M6 MacBook Pro delivers up to 24 hours of battery life. We’ll need to run our battery test to confirm, but given that the M5 MacBook Pro lasted 18 hours, 24 hours might not be too far off.

MacBook Pro M6 vs MacBook Pro M5: What’s the same?

Design

Apple’s MacBook Pro line has featured the same design since late 2021 and things haven’t changed with the M6 model. That means we get another sturdy yet light slab of machined aluminum that’s easy to travel with and use.

The MacBook Pro M6 has the same dimensions (12.31 x 8.71 x 0.61 inches) and weight (3.4 pounds), along with identical color choices in Space Black and Silver. The port selection remains unchanged as well, offering an SDXC card slot, three Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports, an HDMI port, MagSafe 3 charging, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Display

Apple has kept the 14.2-inch Mini-LED display running at 120Hz ProMotion for the M6 MacBook Pro refresh. We still have the notch cutout at the top, and no Dynamic Island-like functionality. If rumors are true, that's an upgrade reserved for the still-unannounced MacBook Pro OLED.

Since the display isn’t different, our benchmarks for the MacBook Pro M5 should be virtually identical on the new model. That means you’ll get excellent color representation (sRGB and DCI-P3) and color accuracy (Delta-E). Even without an OLED, the M6 MacBook Pro’s mini-LED panel should be a feast for the eyes.

Other features

Here is a brief rundown of everything else that’s the same on the new MacBook Pro M6.

• 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View: Desk View can be hit or miss, but the webcam itself should deliver the same sharp and colorful photo and video quality as previous MacBook Pro models.
• Sound system: As before, the MacBook Pro M6 has a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio and force-cancelling woofers. That means you’ll get exceptional audio quality for a laptop. There’s also a three-mic array that should also do a good job of capturing your voice during video calls and recordings.
• Media engine: The MacBook Pro M6 supports H.264/HEVC/ProRes/ProRes RAW + AV1 decode.

MacBook Pro M6 vs MacBook Pro M5: Outlook

As expected, the 14-inch MacBook Pro M6 is largely a modest refresh of previous models. But while there are no revolutionary upgrades, the M6 chip should provide meaningful performance and efficiency boosts. This is especially true for anyone still using an older M-series MacBook Pro or an even more ancient Intel model.

If you fall into the latter camp, then the MacBook Pro M6 is worth considering, even if it costs much more than before. However, anyone still using an M5- or even M4-powered MacBook Pro might want to reconsider, as those machines are still plenty powerful.

We're going into the final weekend of October 2026 — with Halloween arriving on Saturday to boot — which means that, yes, the top streaming services are about to do their monthly platform clean-outs of old film titles to make way for a fresh crop of fun new flicks. That means if you've had movies bookmarked to watch on Prime Video, you're going to want to click "Play" on those before October 31 comes around.

It can be hard to keep track of what's coming and what's going on the popular Amazon platform, but that's where Tom's Guide comes in. We've rounded up five movies currently available on Prime Video that are worth adding to your watchlist before they leave in October 2026. There are classic horror movies and creepy thrillers, of course, but also sci-fi sagas, beloved rom-coms, and a Gen X favorite.

Whether you want to laugh, cry or scream your head off, here are five movies to catch on Prime Video before they're gone at the month's end.

'Dracula' (1931)

Of course, you can watch horror movies anytime of the year, but there is something special about settling in for a scary watch in the days leading up to Halloween. And you don't get more classically scary than "Dracula."

Bela Lugosi iconically portrays the titular Transylvanian vampire in this 1931 screen version of Bram Stoker's classic tale, which sees the 500-year-old bloodsucker emigrate to London and begin preying on local young socialites (including those played by Helen Chandler and Frances Dade). Soon, those mysterious blood-loss illnesses catch the attention of local physicians as well as an eccentric scientist named Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan), who begins digging into the case and hunting down Dracula.

'Interstellar' (2014)

Christopher Nolan has managed to make us tear up with movies about atomic bombs, military evacuations, and caped crusaders, so it's not all that surprising that the most emotional entry in the Oscar winner's acclaimed career is a father-daughter drama about space travel.

Set in a dystopian near-future where a global pathogen has wiped out global crops and depleted breathable air, this sweeping 2014 sci-fi epic is captained by former NASA pilot-turned-doomsday farmer Joseph "Coop" Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), who is recruited to lead an exploratory interspace team — joining astronauts played by Anne Hathaway, Wes Bentley and David Gyasi — and find a new habitable planet in another galaxy that will save humanity from a dying Earth.

The intergalactic stakes are certainly stirring, but the movie's real heart-tugging attribute is the close bond between Cooper and his daughter Murph (played by Mackenzie Foy as a child and Jessica Chastain and Ellen Burstyn as an adult).

'Reality Bites' (1994)

Ethan Hawke has been making the promo rounds lately in support of season two of the FX crime dramedy "The Lowdown," but long before he played nosy journalist Lee Raybon, he famously played the perennially unemployed slacker Troy Dyer in the iconic '90s flick "Reality Bites."

Before the Ben Stiller-directed comedy leaves Prime Video and thrusts us into "the winter of our discontent" at the end of the month, catch up with Troy and his Gen X pals — aspiring filmmaker Lelaina Pierce (Winona Ryder), Gap sales manager Vickie Miner (Janeane Garofalo) and their closeted roommate Sammy Gray (Steve Zahn) — as they navigate post-collegiate life, find meaning in their dead-end jobs, worry about the AIDS crisis and boogie to "My Sharona" in convenience stores.

'The Visit' (2015)

Writer-director M. Night Shyamalan ("The Sixth Sense," "Signs") has been freaking us out with his filmography for decades, and this suspenseful 2015 horror-thriller is no exception. A return to form for the scare-loving auteur, "The Visit" is a found-footage-style flick centered on a pair of young siblings, Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and Tyler (Ed Oxenbould), who are forced by their mother (Kathryn Hahn) to spend five days with their estranged grandparents in the remote Pennsylvania countryside.

Becca, an aspiring filmmaker, decides to chronicle their trip as a family documentary for their mom. However, during their stay, the kiddos begin noticing bizarre behaviors from the elders and strange circumstances on their farm, leading the brother-sister pair to wonder whether or not Grandma and Grandpa are exactly who they say they are.

'Overboard' (1987)

Just a month after the 2018 Anna Faris-led remake left the streaming platform, the 1987 original "Overboard" is also shoving off from Prime Video on October 31. Starring IRL couple-goals pair Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, the Garry Marshall-directed rom-com classic centers on spoiled, wealthy socialite Joanna Mintz Stayton (Hawn), who, after suffering a head injury aboard a yacht, suffers amnesia and is taken in by Dean Proffitt (Russell), a working-class carpenter whom she previously mistreated and who now has revenge on the brain.

He tells the hospital that Joanna is his wife and the mother of his children, and soon Hawn's character is left dealing with Dean's four unruly sons and messy household chores. Of course, this being a romantic comedy, Dean's scam eventually sees the odd couple develop genuine feelings for each other, adding a heartwarming quality to what should be an admittedly creepy premise.

Microsoft is offering roughly 60,000 employees a chance to leave the company, and the timing is hard to ignore. As the tech giant pours billions into AI, it's giving more than a quarter of its workforce the option to take a buyout.

But while it's easy to blame AI, it's important to understand that it hasn't necessarily replaced these Microsoft employees. The buyout offers are voluntary, and the company hasn't disclosed how many people it expects to leave or whether AI played a direct role in the decision.

Still, the announcement raises an uncomfortable question for anyone watching AI reshape the workplace. If one of the world's biggest AI investors is rethinking its workforce, what could that mean for your job?

New research suggests the changes may already be underway, although not necessarily in the way people expect. Instead of widespread layoffs, some of the earliest signs are showing up in hiring, particularly among younger workers.

What's happening at Microsoft?

On October 26, Microsoft announced a Voluntary Exit Offer for eligible employees in the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom.

The program allows employees in participating teams at level 70 and below to leave with financial support and career-planning resources. Not every division is included, and participation is optional.

According to CRN, Microsoft confirmed that approximately 60,000 employees qualify, representing about 27% of its 223,000-person global workforce.

In her announcement, Microsoft's chief people officer Amy Coleman said the program would give participating organizations more flexibility to adapt their workforces to changing needs.

The decision comes as Microsoft continues investing heavily in AI infrastructure, including the data centers and computing power required to run increasingly sophisticated models.

But the timing doesn't establish a direct connection between AI spending and the buyout offers. Microsoft has not said these employees are being replaced by AI, and there's no indication that all 60,000 will leave.

Which jobs are most vulnerable to AI?

The workers facing the biggest changes aren't necessarily those doing the most technical jobs. They're often people whose responsibilities involve repetitive, predictable tasks that AI can increasingly perform.

In a March 2026 study, Anthropic examined occupations using a combination of AI capabilities and real-world usage data.

Computer programmers, customer service representatives and financial analysts were among the occupations with substantial exposure to AI. Their work includes tasks such as writing code, answering routine questions, analyzing documents and processing information.

Anthropic found no systematic increase in unemployment among workers in highly exposed occupations, although it identified signs that hiring of younger workers may be slowing.

Stanford researchers found a similar pattern. In an August 2026 study examining payroll data from millions of U.S. workers, researchers found that employment among people ages 22 to 25 in highly AI-exposed occupations was 19% below where it would have been if it had grown at the same rate as employment among their less-exposed peers.

Again, that doesn't mean AI eliminated 19% of those jobs. The researchers found that much of the difference came from slower hiring rather than workers being laid off. They also cautioned that their findings don't prove AI caused the entire employment gap.

The research highlights that workers whose jobs rely heavily on documented knowledge and repeatable procedures may be more exposed than those whose expertise comes from experience, relationships and judgment.

For employees, the message isn't necessarily that their entire profession is at risk. It's that the tasks employers need them to perform are changing, and entry-level opportunities may be particularly vulnerable.

3 ways to protect your career as AI changes the workplace

There's no guaranteed way to make a job immune to automation. But the research suggests workers can take practical steps to become more adaptable as employers change their expectations.

1. Learn to use AI in your current job

One of the simplest ways to prepare is to become comfortable using the technology that's changing your industry.

That doesn't mean learning to code or becoming an AI expert. It means understanding how tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft Copilot can help with the work you already do.

An administrative assistant might use AI to organize meeting notes, while someone in marketing could use it to analyze campaign feedback. A financial professional might use it to summarize reports before checking the figures independently.

There's evidence that these skills are increasingly valuable. According to LinkedIn's 2026 labor-market report, U.S. job postings requiring AI literacy skills grew 70% year over year.

What you can do today: Choose one repetitive task and experiment with using an approved AI tool to complete it. Compare the results with your usual approach, check for errors and avoid sharing confidential company information.

2. Build skills that go beyond what AI can automate

AI can summarize documents, write emails and generate reports, but completing a task isn't the same as understanding how it fits into a larger business decision.

Stanford's research found that experienced workers generally fared better than younger employees in AI-exposed occupations. The researchers also observed stronger employment patterns in roles that depend more heavily on knowledge developed through practice and experience.

That suggests there is value in developing skills that aren't easily captured in a set of instructions, including problem-solving, communication, leadership and the ability to make decisions when the answer isn't obvious.

What you can do today: Look for opportunities to take ownership of projects, work directly with customers or solve problems that require coordination with other people. These experiences can help you build expertise beyond routine tasks.

3. Show employers the value you bring

As AI changes how quickly work can be completed, simply being able to produce more may not be enough to stand out.

Instead, focus on the results of your work. That might mean improving customer satisfaction, reducing unnecessary costs, helping a team adopt a useful tool or identifying a problem before it becomes expensive.

Keep track of those accomplishments. If your organization restructures or you decide to look for another job, you'll have concrete examples of the value you bring beyond a list of daily responsibilities.

What you can do today: Write down three recent accomplishments and the impact they had. Where possible, include measurable outcomes such as time saved, revenue generated or improvements in customer satisfaction.

The takeaway

Microsoft's announcement arrives at a time when research is beginning to show changes in how employers hire, particularly for jobs involving tasks that AI can automate.

For workers, the immediate concern should be more about whether the skills that got them hired will be enough to keep them competitive. By learning to work with AI, building experience that goes beyond routine tasks and demonstrating measurable results won't guarantee job security, employees can gain a practical starting point as the workplace continues to change.

With the US midterm election just a week away (Nov. 3), it’s important to avoid deepfake images meant to spread misinformation among voters.

I’ve come across far too many instances of older folks in the comments section falling for obvious attempts at political deepfakes. That trend got so bad during the 2024 US election that the “Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections” was enacted, with companies such as Anthropic, Meta, Google and Microsoft signing on to uphold its mission to introduce “a set of commitments to deploy technology countering harmful AI-generated content meant to deceive voters.”

Part of that accord’s mission statement is as follows: “Digital content addressed by the accord consists of AI-generated audio, video, and images that deceptively fake or alter the appearance, voice, or actions of political candidates, election officials, and other key stakeholders in a democratic election, or that provide false information to voters about when, where, and how they can vote.”

OpenAI is another one of the major tech companies that signed on to support the accord’s attempts to fight back against election deepfakes. And in 2026, it introduced a pretty clever way to uphold its promise of preventing everyone from creating political deepfakes with ChatGPT.

Blocking requests for photorealistic imagery

Back in May of this year, OpenAI released a blog entry entitled “Election information and safeguards in 2026.”

One of the standout methods detailed in that blog is how it has altered ChatGPT to block the creation of images meant to misinform voters:

“We now apply image stylization to requests for images depicting election interference or that may discourage voting. These outputs produce stylized – also known as cartoonified – illustrations, rather than photorealistic images, to help reduce the risk that an imagined scene is mistaken for documentary evidence. This approach preserves room for illustrations and social commentary. Our policies prohibiting election interference and demobilization always apply, even if that misuse involves cartoonified imagery.”

That pretty much means any requests to ChatGPT for photorealistic images that are meant to be political deepfakes will only be produced in a cartoon style. And any follow-up requests to make that photorealistic change will be ignored outright.

I went ahead and tried it out for myself and requested the creation of an image showing someone stuffing official US mail ballots into a drop box. I made sure to mention that I want it in a photorealistic style, but it eventually came out as an illustration. And when I followed up with a second attempt at getting it done in a photorealistic fashion, ChatGPT just went ahead and made its original illustration look a bit better (by staying in cartoon form, by the way).

With Marist Poll releasing a poll noting that 70% of Republicans, 32% of independents and 18% of Democrats, it’s easy to see how the type of image I created could create some form of political disinformation if it were photorealistic and posted all over social media.

Other major AI companies, such as Google (Gemini) and Anthropic (Claude), have announced their own strategies for preparing and supporting the US midterm elections.

Google’s official blog on the matter points to its plan to help voters find the most reliable political information possible: “We highlight official resources and are rolling out interactive tools across Search, including in AI Mode and AI Overviews, and in the Gemini app to connect you with election information. This includes polling locations, registration deadlines and other official data provided by state and local governments and Democracy Works, as well as real-time voting results from The Associated Press.”

As for Anthropic, its blog also stated how the company made sure Claude pushes users to trustworthy sources for their midterm voter information: “Ahead of Election Day, we've added two ways for people to get reliable information directly in their conversations with Claude. As we shared in April, when people ask Claude.ai about voter registration, polling places, or election dates, we’ll continue to display a banner linking to TurboVote, a nonpartisan resource from Democracy Works.”

Anthropic also noted that Claude will begin to incorporate official voting information from Democracy Works into its responses late this month.

Bottom line

It’s good to see OpenAI install a safeguard in place in ChatGPT to block any attempts at generating photorealistic images meant to make political deepfakes. And it’s also nice to see Google and Anthropic step up to develop the sort of methods that do a good job of making sure their respective chatbots present the most truthful political data.

Here’s hoping all three AI companies continue to strengthen their efforts to block all attempts to use their tools to generate political deepfake imagery.

Apple is continuing its "Pro and Tell" announcements this week with an all-new iMac to follow yesterday's iPad mini 8 reveal.

As expected, Apple has upgraded its colorful all-in-one with the M6 chip that will turbocharge performance in a similar vein to the Mac mini we reviewed back in September. The iMac 2026 will also ship with macOS 27 Golden Gate, which includes the next version of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.

Though this year's iMac is more of a spec refresh, it should be a nice upgrade for folks working with older models. That said, the higher price stings. That said, here's everything we know about the new M6 iMac.

M6 iMac: Price and release date

The new M6 iMac with a 10-core CPU/GPU starts at $1,499 ($1,449 for education). iMac with a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU starts at $1,699 (U.S.) and $1,599 for education.

It's hardly surprising, but that's a step up from the $1,299 entry-level price the M4 iMac launched with in 2024. As with its other devices, Apple increased prices in June to a new starting price of $1,499, so if you view it through that lens, it's not as bad. But it just reinforces that even Apple isn't immune to the effects of RAMaggeddon.

Shipping will begin on November 6, the same date as the new iPad mini 8. Pre-orders begin on October 28.

M6 iMac: Performance

The biggest overhaul for the new iMac is in performance, thanks to the addition of the M6 chip. We won't know precisely how this chip pairs with the iMac hardware until we test it for ourselves — but we can get a good idea from our time with the M6 Mac mini.

In our review of that machine, the M6 chip "really shone" and "didn't miss a beat" even when we put it under some serious pressure. Here's how the chip held up against the same benchmarking tests as the M5 and M5 Pro chips inside a MacBook Pro.

If the new iMac delivers similar performance, it will be a much more powerful computer than its predecessor. Apple introduced the M6 in August, and like the A20 Pro in the iPhone Duo, it's built on a 2-nanometer process. It should easily outclass the 3-nanometer architecture used in the M4, particularly in AI processing, thanks to a Dual 16-core Neural Engine specifically for AI and machine learning tasks.

This means if you plan to use Apple's desktop for running local AI language models or experimenting with local agents — as well as creative tools — you could see a big improvement.

M6 iMac: Design

The new iMac keeps the same overall design and display specs as its predecessor. That's by no means a bad thing, but considering the design hasn't changed meaningfully since 2021, a few extra flourishes wouldn't have gone amiss.

The front of the computer is still a 24-inch 4.5k Retina display with a 4,480 x 2,520 pixel resolution and 500 nits of peak brightness. With the iPad mini 8 getting the OLED treatment, it would have been nice to see it here too, but Apple is sticking with the LED-backlit LCD technology from the M4 iMac. That said, 12-core models offer a nano-texture display option.

The iMac comes in seven colors: blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange, and silver.

M6 iMac: Networking

Alongside the new M6 chip's performance, the 2026 iMac gets a networking boost with improved wireless connectivity, including Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 out of the box.

Most users will welcome the jump to Wi-Fi 7, as it gives you access to the faster 6 GHz band and protocol features like Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which (my colleague Anthony tells me) aggregates multiple bands simultaneously for lower latency and higher throughput.

And having Bluetooth 6 will give you more accurate distance tracking, better power efficiency, and lower-latency wireless audio if you happen to have a pair of AirPods Max 2 on your desk.

Lastly, models with a 12-core CPU / 12-core GPU M6 chip can have 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, which Apple says is up to 2.5x faster than the previous iMac.

iMac: Camera, audio, and accessories

Other features for the iMac M6 include a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View. For sound, it has two pairs of force-canceling woofers and two tweeters, plus support for Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. There's also a microphone array.

Expect a color-matched Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad, all with USB-C charging ports. It will also support Touch ID.

M6 iMac: Outlook

The iMac was due for an upgrade, and it's good to see it join its smaller brother in the ranks of Apple devices powered by a 2-nanometer chip. If you're using an older iMac, the jump to M6 alone may be enough to warrant an upgrade — especially if you plan to do a lot of AI-related work on your desktop.

The sticking point may be that the design and display remain unchanged. And, of course, there's a price rise to factor in as well. We'll retain final judgment until we've reviewed it, but Apple's new iMac looks set to take the crown of the best all-in-one PC for 2026 without too much trouble.

Apple has unveiled an October refresh of its 14-inch MacBook Pro complete with the M6 processor that brings the laptop in line with the Mac mini and today's also-announced M6 iMac.

As part of Apple's "Pro and tell" announcements this week, we now have a brand new MacBook Pro to compliment the iMac and yesterday's iPad mini 8 reveal. If the rumors are true, then we may be in line for one more MacBook-related reveal this week: the highly-anticipated touchscreen MacBook Pro OLED.

But let's return to this device which, sadly, doesn't come with a touchscreen or much in the way of a new design. Reportedly, Apple is saving its MacBook Pro redesign for the M7 version of the machine next year. But then again, criticizing the MacBook Pro for its design seems churlish — the thin and light aluminum unibody enclosure conceals a vast amount of power and is just as good to look at now as it's always been.

As with the new iMac, the M6 MacBook Pro will ship with macOS 27 Golden Gate, which includes the next version of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.

Here's everything we know about the new M6 MacBook Pro.

M6 MacBook Pro: Price and release date

The new M6 MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 or $38.99 per month for 12 months. That gets you the default configuration of an M6 chip, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

In the U.K., the pricing starts at £1,999 and pre-orders in both regions begin on Wednesday, October 28. Shipping will begin on November 6.

In line with just about every other consumer electronics release this year, that's a price increase over the $1,599 starting cost of last year's 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro. Of course, since then Apple put the pricing up by $300 in June which makes this technically not a price hike... but still — it's a higher cost in my book thanks to ongoing component and memory shortages driven by AI demand.

M6 MacBook Pro: Performance

The biggest single reason for picking up the M6 MacBook Pro is in the name: Apple's M6 chip follows the A20 Pro inside the iPhone Duo and moves to a 2-nanometer architecture that'll deliver a notable power and efficiency gain over previous models.

We've seen the M6 chip only in one Mac product so far; the latest Mac mini and in our review we noted its performance "really shone" and "didn't miss a beat" even when we put it under extreme multitasking.

Here's a breakdown of how the chip inside the Mac mini held up against the same benchmarking tests as the M5 and M5 Pro chips inside last year's MacBook Pro.

Specific performance will, of course, be slightly different for this machine but the above results should give you an indication of how much more powerful it's likely to be over last year's MacBook Pro. It likely won't be enough to convince M5 owners to jump, but anyone still using an M1 or M2 MacBook Pro will find the M6 is the upgrade they've been waiting for.

The M5 chip consisted of a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU while the M6 improves that by two additional cores in both the CPU and the GPU. In addition, it's got a Dual 16-core Neural Engine for AI and machine learning that could take the fight to Nvidia's RTX Spark machines that are specifically targeting on-device AI workloads.

Apple says the 12-core GPU delivers up to 30 percent faster graphics and up to 25 percent faster AI workloads when compared to M5.

The Neural Engine is also supported by Neural Accelerators in each GPU core that should mean the M6 MacBook Pro is streets ahead when it comes to using AI-powered creative tools.

M6 MacBook Pro: Design

We could have seen this one coming a mile away, but Apple hasn't changed up the outward design of the MacBook Pro for the 2026 iteration. In fact, it's largely the same as the design we've had since 2021: a solid slab of machined aluminium that's both sturdy and light given the amount of power under the hood.

The M6 MacBook Pro retains the same 12.31 x 8.71 x 0.61 inch dimensions and 3.4 pound weight as the previous generation and the color options remain a choice between Silver and Space Black.

Apple has kept the 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display running at 120Hz ProMotion for the M6 MacBook Pro refresh. We still have the notch cutout at the top, squashing the rumor Apple would switch it up for an iPhone-style Dynamic Island this time around. And, as mentioned up top, there's no touchscreen here for interacting with macOS 27 Golden Gate.

When it comes to ports, the M6 MacBook Pro keeps the current physical I/O layout: you get three Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports, an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and MagSafe 3 charging.

M6 MacBook Pro: Networking and battery life

Alongside the performance from the new M6 chip, the MacBook Pro also benefits from receiving Apple's N1 chip and a boost to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

The current model still uses Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 so the M6 refresh will give users lower networking latency and higher throughput. Bluetooth 6 leads to better distance tracking and more power efficiency for wireless accessories like game controllers or a pair of headphones.

Apple says the M6 MacBook Pro's battery life gets up to 14 additional hours for Intel-based upgraders and up to four more hours for users coming from M1, delivering up to 24 hours overall, so users can get more done on a single charge.

M6 MacBook Pro: Outlook

The MacBook Pro refresh is pretty customary once October rolls around and Apple has delivered more or less what we expected here: no big design changes but whole host of extra power and battery life efficiency.

We'll reserve judgement until we've got the new M6 MacBook Pro into the Tom's Guide lab for benchmarking but it's safe to say the new chip is going to deliver in some pretty clear-cut ways.

Anyone upgrading from an M1, M2 or older Intel MacBook Pro will see a dramatic leap in performance and read/write speeds. Creative professionals and anyone working with local AI will benefit from the additional power of Apple's new chip.

However, for those already using an M4 or M5 machine, there may be less of a reason to upgrade. Especially since the potential reveal of a MacBook Pro OLED tomorrow could easily eclipse today's news for many MacBook fans.

Digital privacy stalwart Proton is reportedly set to interview employees across the company about how they use AI in their work, and the answers could help decide who keeps their job. The firm behind Proton Mail and Proton VPN – one of the best VPNs – told staff about the plan in an internal email on Monday, October 26, which was leaked to 404 Media.

The email calls the re-interviews "consequential." What interviewers conclude will be written up and fed into a broader review of the organization, which could change people's roles and responsibilities – or whether they stay at Proton.

The move fits a wider push under CEO Andy Yen, who has been steering Proton toward heavier AI use, including the launch of Lumo, its privacy-focused chatbot. Proton had not responded to 404 Media's request for comment at the time of publication, but has now made a public statement on Reddit.

What Proton says

In the Reddit comment on r/ProtonMail, posted from the Proton_Team account, the company claims it is "not doing layoffs and using AI as an excuse." As a counterpoint to this, it states it has a talent shortage and is hiring across the organization.

"AI is changing the tech industry," the comment continues, "and we, like everyone else, need to evolve our ways of working to remain effective in our industry, and to deliver features faster to users."

The company says it is "assessing how colleagues are adapting to these tools, what support they need, and who can help lead this work."

Finally, Proton states that it is also "assessing whether everyone has the skills they need to take a step forward in a post-AI world," and "offering the support that is necessary, to those who need it, to succeed."

In the Reddit comment, Proton also published the full email, which it says went to some of its staff.

Who gets interviewed – and by whom

The email itself is less reassuring to those impacted: "We are now extending re-interviews more broadly to assess how people are adapting to AI and whether they have the capabilities and approach needed for Proton’s next phase."

Not everyone will be re-interviewed. Interviews will be prioritized according to the organization's assessment needs, the email says, and an invitation – or the lack of one – isn't an outcome in itself. Any decision affecting someone's employment will come separately.

Those who are invited will be interviewed by someone outside their own team and reporting line, chosen from a pool of leaders who "demonstrate strong AI capability."

The interviews will run from November 4 to 11, and staff are told to arrive with concrete examples of their use of AI. The email is blunt about what passes muster here: "Be ready to discuss what you have changed in your work, the results, what you have learned, what has not worked, and what you would do differently. A list of tools alone will not demonstrate this."

What Proton wants from staff

The email also presents the interviews as a route to advancement, saying staff who rethink their work, put AI into practice and help others adapt may be offered greater responsibility. It asks for "curiosity, judgment and urgency."

Yen himself first interviewed more than 40 senior leaders across Engineering and Product, the email says, before the process widened to staff across the company.

AI is not new at Proton. An AI writing assistant arrived in Proton Mail in 2024, Lumo followed in July 2025, and the chatbot got an upgrade in June 2026. Proton says it keeps no server-side logs of Lumo conversations and runs the chatbot on its own infrastructure.

Yen told Wired in an interview published in August that AI is surveillance and that Proton was reluctantly pulled into building AI tools. He added that he would probably prefer a world without AI, but accepts it is here to stay. Clearly, his opinion has not changed on the matter.

I used to be someone who would set my thermostat to heat, forget about it for 12 hours, and then suddenly remember and panic-run to turn it down. That was until I started setting my heating on a schedule — total game changer. What's more, I literally watched my monthly gas bill drop.

Unfortunately, though, it didn’t drop quite as low as I’d hoped. This was me last winter, so this time round, I'm looking to really shake things up and ideally keep my heating below the $200/month mark.

I haven't switched it on yet this year, and we've been reaching for our fluffy robes and thick socks so far, but we've probably only got a few more weeks of this before reality hits and I have to press that button. We have a toddler in the household, too, so keeping my home warm is vital.

So, instead of guessing this winter, I reached out to a HVAC expert to find out what temperature is the golden number when it comes to heating your home. And why, of course! Here’s what they told me.

The ideal thermostat temperature

This number will vary depending on the size of your home, how well-insulated it is, and how many people are inside. “As a rule of thumb, for most homes, start with 68°F during the day when people are home, then adjust up or down based on comfort,” claims Gelacio Lechuga, American Home Shield Virtual HVAC Expert.

"This temperature provides a good balance between comfort and energy efficiency," he adds. I wasn't hugely surprised by this, as my heating tends to sit around this mark, but I still find it cold some mornings and need layers.

Of course, there are times when this number just won’t suit. “I’d lower the temperature to 60°F-65°F in cases where everyone is asleep, if you’re not home for several hours, or if you’re trying to save money on your utility bill,” claims Lechuga.

Don’t forget that the number of people in your household matters, as more people generate more heat — and it's worth considering who those people are in your home, too.

You may need to raise your thermostat to 70°F-72°F or higher if there are elderly people, infants, or anyone with a health condition in the house. “You can also raise the temperature during extremely cold weather if the home feels uncomfortable or if the home has poor insulation or significant drafts,” adds Lechuga.

Don't forget that, as well as people in the house, the type of house that you own also matters. In larger homes, temperatures will vary hugely, as bigger rooms are harder to keep at a constant temperature. “Well-insulated homes stay warm longer and may require lower thermostat settings,” he says. Plus, you might not have considered other factors: “Dry indoor air can make a room feel cooler than it actually is,” he continues.

And he adds, “South-facing rooms may naturally stay warmer during the day,” so you could get away with turning your heating down a little if your important rooms are south-facing.

How else can I keep my utility bills down?

If you'd rather avoid ramping up your heating and you'd prefer to keep it as low as recommended without your pipes freezing, then there are some things you can do to help you stay warm. This is particularly helpful if you only use one room overnight while you sleep, or if you need one room to be hotter than the rest, perhaps if you have an elderly relative sleeping inside.

A decent space heater will work wonders in warming one room, for a fraction of the cost that your utility company charges. These are also great because you can move them around your home as you move, and they're usually quite affordable in price, too.
