Apple held its third-quarter earnings call today, where the tech giant reported "record" $109 billion earnings, largely driven by a 22% increase in iPhone sales. Despite that, Apple's stock fell 8% based on missed revenue estimates in China and the company's services arm.

Outgoing CEO Tim Cook, in his swan song earnings call, was also questioned by investors about the impact of the ongoing memory crisis on Apple supply and future forecasts.

"We reluctantly raised prices," Cook said, referring to last month's price increases that affected every Apple device except the iPhone.

"We did it because we’re in what I’d categorize as a 100-year flood on memory pricing," Cook continued, repeating an analogy he made a month ago.

What Apple is saying about the memory crunch

During the call, Cook admitted that Apple is facing supply constrains that are affecting iPhone, Macs and iPads, primarily on Macs. Cook asserted several times that this issue was largely driven by surprising amounts of demand.

Both Cook and Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh noted that the supply chain has become less "flexible" which was blamed on nodes for advanced SoCs and that they expected continued high levels of demand.

"We expect the impact from supply chain constraints to increase significantly [in September]," Cook said. In response to an investor Cook said that Apple expects to pay even more for memory through the next quarter.

Investors were only allowed two questions but nearly everyone who spoke used at least one to ask about memory and pricing. Cook repeatedly claimed that the cause of Apple supply constraints is "not a regular supply issue" and instead said it was a demand forecast issue where iPhones and Macs performed "remarkably better than we thought they would."

However, "we’ve got a quarter that we’re going to be scrambling on supply side," Cook told one investor.

The upcoming fourth quarter will tell us a lot about how Apple is dealing with the memory crisis. Price increases might defray rising component costs, and the new Apple Upgrade Program could help the company keep a more constant source of revenue.

Apple still has the iPhone 18 series, new Macs and iPads to release and potentially more. But we're already bracing for a potential $200 price increase for the iPhone 18 Pro models. And a possible $2,500 iPhone Ultra.

Summer is the season of the foldable; with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 already reviewed and Google slated for August, we turn our attention to the upcoming Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

A new leak from semi-retired tipster Evan Blass just revealed what appear to be marketing images that showcase Google's foldable smartphone from nearly every angle.

Take a look:

The images don't reveal any new specifications, save that the inner display will be 8 inches, similar to last year's Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It will also have Gemini Intelligence, which shouldn't be too surprising.

Blass' leaked images seem to match leaked renders that popped up in March, showing a phone that looks much the same as its predecessor.

The one strange change appears to be a new LED position in the upper left corner of the camera array. On the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, the flashlight and LED light are set to the right of the camera lenses.

I'm curious how this new integration will work with the cameras. It does make the camera array smaller and cleaner-looking.

Surprisingly, we haven't seen too many leaks for the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. From everything that has popped up, don't expect too many exterior changes.

The biggest change will likely be an upgraded Tensor G6 chipset, which should be more powerful than the Tensor G5, which was a step up from the G4 but still lagged behind the Samsung Galaxy S25 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro.

The G6 chipset will reportedly be built using the 2nm manufacturing process, which means improved performance and efficiency thanks to increased transistor density.

Small look at the Pixel Watch 5 and Pixel Buds

Buried at the bottom of Blass' newsletter are two smaller leaks; single images showcase what appear to be the Pixel Watch 5 and a pair of Pixel Buds. It's not clear whether these are the Pro models.

Like the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, it seems Google isn't changing anything design-wise for its smartwatch. The big change might be a new Tensor chipset and some updated health features.

Pixel 11 Pro Fold release date and price

Earlier this month, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported on an invite for the next Google Pixel event, which is set to take place in New York City on August 12 starting at 6 PM ET, a surprisingly late launch time.

Google phones typically hit store shelves about a week or two after events. The Pixel 9 was released on August 22, 2024, while the Pixel 10 hit on August 29, 2025. I expect a similar timeframe for the Pixel 11 series.

As for pricing, given the soaring cost of memory, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a price increase. The Pixel Pro has been set at $999 for the last three years, but another $100 or $200 price seems likely.

This week, Apple revealed its new Apple Upgrade Program that lets you lease several of the company's devices, including iPhones, Macs, Apple Watches and iPads.

With fixed 12-, 24 or 36-month terms, you're locked into paying a monthly rate for your chosen device until the term is up or you decide to upgrade. Abandoning the lease early is possible, but there are a number of penalties and fees associated with doing so.

Is the Apple Upgrade Program a good deal versus buying the phone outright or getting it from a carrier? I crunched the numbers, but also turned to ChatGPT to find out if it's a ripoff or worth your dollar.

iPhones and Apple Watches

Here's how much an iPhone or Apple Watch will cost you over a 24-month term. If you want to keep the device at the end of the lease, you'll need to pay the remainder.

Macs and iPads

And here's how it looks for Macs and iPads, which are eligible for a 36-month lease. This table specifically looks at a 24-month lease.

The fine print

There are two big caveats to Apple's leasing program. The first is that, according to the terms of service, if you miss three consecutive payments, Klarna (the company managing the lease) will terminate the contract, and the customer will owe the remaining balance.

The second is that AppleCare+ is not included with the lease. You could roll the dice and not subscribe to AppleCare+ but you are liable for any damage, per the fine print.

"Insurance is not included in your lease, and you may incur damage fees if the device is lost, stolen, or not returned in the condition required by the lease."

AppleCare+ ranges in cost from $2.99 (Watches) up to $9.99 (iPhone) per month depending on your device. There are annual payment options as well.

Here's the iPhone and Watches table again with how much a 24-month lease would set you back with AppleCare+.

As you can see, over two years, the price goes up by a few hundred dollars and in some cases exceeds the initial price of the iPhone or Apple Watch.

Yes, that would be the case if you weren't leasing an iPhone. AppleCare+ is a protection plan that you subscribe to a monthly or annual basis.

However, as mentioned, it may be more necessary for a leased device than one you own because of those potential damage fees. You could also be hit with upgrade fees or substantial termination fees if you try to end the lease early.

What about trade-ins?

Another factor against Apple's lease program is that, because you don't own your device, you won't get any credits for trading in your older device, which could lower your monthly payments to something lower than you would get from the Apple Upgrade program.

Let's take the iPhone 17 Pro as an example.

If you're upgrading from an iPhone 16 Pro, you could get as much as $560 in trade-in value, which would lower the cost to $22.45/month for 24 months.

If you were upgrading from an iPhone 15 Pro, you could get as much as $410 in trade-in value, which would lower your monthly bill to $28.70.

While you can trade in your current phone and get credit in the Apple Upgrade Program, it's a one-time thing, as you wouldn't own your phone from then on.

What ChatGPT had to say

According to ChatGPT, the Apple Upgrade Program is not a rip-off, but it may not be the cheapest way for you to obtain an Apple device.

"For most people it's more expensive than buying and later selling or trading in the device. The biggest winner is Apple, because leasing encourages customers to stay on a continuous upgrade cycle," the AI said.

For those who keep their devices for three or more years not be a good deal, especially since Apple devices tend to retain their resale or trade-in value. Plus, the leasing program means that you don't own the device.

Interestingly, I actually prompted ChatGPT as well as Gemini and Claude and none of them mentioned AppleCare+ beyond noting that it is no longer bundled with the Apple Upgrade Program the way it was with the iPhone Upgrade plan.

Unless you upgrade annually or money isn't an issue for you, Apple Upgrade Program may not be the right fit for you. I'm a major proponent of owning your devices and this program doesn't let you do that until the end of the terms.

AI is rapidly becoming the new storefront. Instead of scrolling through pages of search results, more shoppers are asking AI assistants to recommend products, compare prices and narrow down options. But a new report argues that those same AI systems may also be quietly shaping what consumers never see.

Researchers at Columbia Law School's Center for Law and the Economy have published a report accusing Amazon and Walmart of using their AI shopping assistants in ways that make American-made products harder to find, despite the systems appearing capable of identifying them.

The report, Made in America, Hidden by AI, examined how Amazon's and Walmart's AI shopping tools responded to questions about products made in the United States. According to the researchers, Amazon's chatbot often declined to answer straightforward questions about American-made products while readily answering equivalent questions about products manufactured in China. After rephrasing the same request, however, the chatbot returned American-made products using information that had been available all along.

"We tested these systems the way an engineer would, and the refusals fell apart under basic testing," Erie Meyer, senior fellow at the Center for Law and the Economy and one of the report's authors, said. "The data was there, but the design was built to hide it."

AI shopping assistants are becoming gatekeepers

The report arrives as retailers increasingly push shoppers toward AI-powered recommendations instead of traditional keyword searches. Whether it's suggesting products, comparing alternatives or summarizing reviews, these assistants are becoming the first stop for many online purchases.

According to the report, neither Amazon nor Walmart currently offers shoppers a dedicated "Made in USA" filter, despite providing hundreds of other filtering options across many product categories. The researchers argue that if AI assistants become the primary interface for online shopping, the way they choose what information to surface, or withhold, could influence purchasing decisions on a massive scale.

I tried it by asking for a few common items like furniture and fishing poles, Alexa+ said it did not have access to the information. However, when I asked for American flags made in the U.S.A., it supplied a product that matched my query.

Lina Khan, director of the Center for Law and the Economy and former chair of the Federal Trade Commission, said the findings demonstrate that increasingly sophisticated AI systems are still shaped by the incentives behind them.

"Even as AI tools continue to grow in sophistication and capability, business incentives will shape how these advancements get deployed," Khan said. "Policymakers and enforcers have a vital role to play to ensure the public doesn't get the short end of the stick."

The systems appear capable of spotting suspicious claims

One of the report's more interesting findings is that both companies' AI assistants appeared able to identify potentially misleading "Made in USA" claims.

According to the researchers, Amazon's chatbot identified listings where promotional material claimed products were American-made despite evidence suggesting they were imported. Walmart's chatbot reportedly ranked "Made in USA" claims by how suspicious they appeared based on factors including seller information and manufacturing footprints.

The authors argue this demonstrates the underlying AI systems have the technical capability to help identify questionable origin claims. However, the report does not establish that Amazon or Walmart internally use these capabilities for marketplace enforcement.

Amazon responds

In a statement to Reuters, Amazon disputed the broader implication that it hides country-of-origin information from shoppers.

"Country-of-origin information, when available, is currently displayed on product detail pages, and we're continually working to improve Alexa for Shopping to make this information even more accessible for customers," an Amazon spokesperson said.

Walmart did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

Bottom line

The report highlights a question that is likely to become more important as AI shopping assistants continue to replace traditional search. If consumers rely on AI to decide what products to buy, the design choices behind those systems become far more consequential.

Decisions about which products are surfaced first, which attributes are emphasized and which questions receive complete answers could shape purchasing behavior in ways that are largely invisible to shoppers.

A few days ago, I wrote that the Galaxy Z Fold 8's crease practically disappeared in daily use. Samsung's new titanium alloy film and reinforced back plate seemed to have solved the foldable world's biggest annoyance. I was impressed.

But that was day 1. Welcome to day 7.

I thought I was gaslighting myself into seeing more of a crease in my day-to-day (and in the photos from our review). But I'm not going crazy — after seeing validation on X/Twitter, turns out wear and tear does catch up to this thing.

The 7-day reality check

A week of daily driving, big-screen use in between sets at the gym, web browsing and TikTok scrolling has taken its toll. Folding a screen, no matter how creaseless, will make a crease after 168 hours.

So what happened? From my years of testing all kinds of foldable displays, one thing has always become clear: nobody can defeat the law of physics.

When you first pull the Z Fold 8 out of the box, the ultra-thin glass and additional protective layers are fresh, pulling completely taut across the hinge. But after a week of real-world use — folding and unfolding it a hundred times a day, letting the device heat up during intense multitasking and stuffing it into tight pockets — I believe those display layers undergo mechanical fatigue.

Engineers call it "plastic deformation." The continuous stress of bowing into the hinge's teardrop cavity, combined with the heat of the device, causes the materials to lose their factory-fresh tension. They slowly begin to settle into the mechanical trench underneath the display.

That titanium alloy film and back plate may be stronger, but that screen still has to obey the mechanical reality of being folded in half. And the result is that by the end of week one, that invisible crease will settle into a visible rut.

I've seen this happen to every foldable — be it the Honor Magic V6, Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold or Motorola Razr Ultra.

How bad is it actually?

In short: it's not.

Let me be completely clear here. This is not a bad phone because of a display crease. In fact, this passport-size form factor won me over compared to the taller options — being much more pocketable and a better aspect ratio for content consumption.

That being said, a lot of journalists have been quick to describe the display as being "virtually crease-free" (even though Samsung never said that itself). So let's go deeper on this reality check.

The feel of it remains unchanged both before and after the trench deepened. You can subtly feel it with your finger whether the display tension is there or not. So this is definitely just a visual thing you'll notice when the screen catches a glare.

And speaking of the glare, while that anti-reflective coating is great, I feel it almost highlights the crease more when held against a harsh light source (like a sunlit window) because the distortion in the reflection becomes more obvious.

The $1,899 question

Now, is this a dealbreaker? If you're paying nearly $2,000 for a premium device, it's fair to expect premium longevity. However, I'll go out on a limb and say it's not as big of a problem as you think.

The Z Fold 8 is still a fantastic foldable with a form factor that I love. And to Samsung's credit, the crease is definitely less noticeable now than it's been on the company's previous phones. But with the "crease-free" word on the street, it's only fair that I make it clear that this is a temporary illusion, not a permanent feature.

If you've been watching the news, you may have seen the Trump administration's recent robotic ban. In a move by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the ban targets any new foreign-made humanoid robot imports to the U.S. The thinking is that these products may cause "unacceptable risks" to U.S. security.

But humanoid robots aren't the only robots at risk. It turns out the ban spreads much further than you might think. Far enough to spell trouble for the kind of 'bots you may be using in your own home.

Delve a little deeper into the FCC's definition, and you're looking at a much larger coverage of robots that fall under the term "advanced robotic devices".

If they're "capable of locomotion, obstacle avoidance, navigation, or movement on the ground" then they're targeted under the new ban. Sounds a lot like robotic lawnmowers, the best robot vacuums or even your friendly neighborhood delivery robot, right? Exactly.

No more Roombas?

Now, it's worth delving into exactly what this means for home and delivery robots that fall under the FCC's definition.

Importantly, any existing robots previously authorised to be sold in the U.S. are safe. Equally, any robots that have already been imported from outside of the U.S., are currently being sold, or have been approved are also safe.

But any new "advanced robotic devices" being imported, which essentially means any robots being manufactured outside of the U.S., are banned.

This includes robots where "the combined weight of the device and, if applicable, ground station or docking station is over 4.4 lbs", as well as any with "software running either locally or remotely, including firmware and AI or machine-learning model weights" and "a sensor capable of perceiving its environment" or "a component that is capable of providing network connectivity (wired or wireless, including Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, cellular, or satellite)".

Why? Well, as the FCC has said, they consider these robots to pose a national security risk, stating: "foreign-produced advanced robotic devices could be weaponized to directly harm U.S. national security and U.S. persons".

But what's really interesting is what it's demanding companies do instead.

Safety concerns?

A lot of companies like Roomba, Ecovacs, Dreame, Roborock and more source manufacturing from China. Moving forward, they'll need to acquire waivers to continue to manufacture and sell these advanced robotic devices in the US. But, The Verge revealed the FCC doesn't want to ask any questions about actual security.

Instead, the site reports: "The FCC only wants to know where they're designed and made and assembled and tested and influenced, and get a specific commitment to start manufacturing them in the U.S. instead."

So, for now, existing robots in the U.S. are safe. You won't have to hand over your much-loved robot vacuum to security. But it's a huge deal for the companies making them. Any new models will need a waiver to be manufactured elsewhere, and if they can't get the waiver, then they won't be getting sold in the U.S.

If you were on the fence about picking up one of the best robot vacuums or a robotic lawnmower, you might want to act sooner rather than later.

"We are aware of the FCC’s recent update. Based on our current understanding, the new rule does not affect the continued availability, use or support of products we currently sell in the United States. Those products remain available and will continue to receive updates and customer support.

"Like others across the industry, we are seeking further clarity on how the rule will be applied to future products, and we will keep our customers informed. We remain committed to complying with all regulatory requirements in every market where we operate."

Segway Navimow

"We are aware of the FCC’s announcement regarding restrictions to advanced robotic devices. There is no immediate impact to existing Navimow customers, as all Navimow models currently sold in the US have already received FCC equipment authorization. The ban does not affect the sales, service, or continued use of existing products. We are closely monitoring policy developments and evaluating compliance pathways for future products, including the Department of Defense's "Conditional Approval" process."

iRobot (makers of Roomba)

"We are aware of the FCC's recent action and are working with them to better understand its implementation and potential impact. We remain committed to serving our customers and will share updates as more information becomes available."

Streaming continues to get more expensive between rising platform costs and now streaming devices.

Roku announced that it's raising prices on several of its flagship streaming devices — an ominous sign after Fox just purchased Roku for $22 billion in June.

In an interview with The Desk, an unnamed Roku executive blamed the price hike on increased RAM prices and supply issues due to AI demand.

From laptops and phones to gaming consoles and now streaming devices, the AI gold rush is impacting and deforming the market for everything as RAM prices and supply continues to be astronomically bad with no end in sight.

How to save money on streaming devices

There is a small bit of good news, however: Currently, Roku is running a sale on its official store that keeps most Roku devices at their old prices. The Roku Ultra, for example, is "on sale" for $99.99.

You can also pick up Roku devices from Amazon and Best Buy, where you might find some for even less. The Ultra is on sale for $90 on Amazon. Best Buy isn't having a sale, but as of this writing, none of the devices are listed at the new prices.

Of course, if you're not inclined toward Roku, the best streaming devices have alternatives like the Google TV Streamer, which costs $99 on Amazon. It was 1AM, and I was staring down the barrel of every married man’s worst nightmare.

My wife lives in New York and I’m in the U.K., which means our daily catch-ups cross a brutal multi-time-zone divide. Late one night, as my brain-fogged exhaustion finally peaked, my focus slipped for just a few seconds. Then came the dreaded, fatal question:

“What was the last thing I said?”

Normally, failing this question means a one-way ticket to guilt trips and emotional exile. But as I’ve written about before, my Even Realities G2 came to my rescue with the Conversate feature passively transcribing the call and summarizing key points into its HUD overlay.

Now, as you may remember, when this happened a deeply uncomfortable thought washed over me: when relying on smart glasses, who’s actually in a relationship with my wife? Me, or my smart glasses? That’s a question I put directly to Even Realities Founder & CEO, Will Wang.

The cognitive hangover

It’s one of those big questions that makes so many of us skeptical of the AI hardware boom. We’re being asked to strap always-on micro-computers to our faces to make life completely frictionless. But what happens when that friction is the thing that makes us human?

This isn’t just some philosophical late-night hangover; it’s a genuine scientific concern. Recent studies coming out of places like Harvard have warned that an over-reliance on AI tools can lead to brain fry — actively diminishing our critical thinking, memory retention and ability to focus.

If we outsource our active listening to an LLM, we are essentially training our brains that it is OK to zone out. We are turning human connection into a highly optimized, automated task.

In my conversation with Will Wang, I asked him this question point blank, and he didn’t flinch.

“This question arises at every major technological turning point because it challenges the status quo and changes how we interact,” Wang told me. “Before smartphones, we had the exact same concern: while phones empowered us, they drew our attention to digital information and made us feel less connected to families.”

Fair point, but I feel this misses out on a crucial detail — the phone is pocketable, whereas the glasses are permanently worn. One is inherently more invasive than the other.

The "undisturbed connection"

Wang’s argument is that the cognitive damage has already been done by the smartphone. We are already ignoring our spouses to stare at glowing rectangles in our hands. The smart glasses, he argues, are actually the cure.

“First of all, as a company, we must build our products with a core philosophy of helping people build human connection,” Wang explained. “A display in your field of vision can be highly disruptive, but if designed with the right ethos, it can actually be the only way to show information while keeping you focused on the physical world. Otherwise you would look down at a phone screen.”

This is the central thesis behind Even Realities glasses. There are no cameras, and no obtrusive apps demanding your attention. It’s a design language the team calls “ambient computing” or “undisturbed connection.”

“When you align with this ethos, it completely changes your UI/US and product design decisions,” Wang noted. “An internal term we use frequently is ‘undisturbed connection’ — keeping you connected with digital services while remaining undisturbed.”

It’s Wang’s mission to make “design choices” that “always put the user in the driver’s seat,” like picking and choosing when you need AI cues like you see in Conversate. A very far cry from what you see other glasses doing.

The verdict: a digital crutch, or a cure?

Wang is right about one thing: when a new technology is introduced, we tend to get overly excited (or overly terrified) before we figure out how to coexist with it in harmony.

Did my smart glasses enable my bad behavior by letting me zone out during a conversation with my wife? Yes, absolutely. But they also kept my marriage in one piece, keeping me verbally present rather than going vague in my non-listening state..

We are potentially entering an era where AI is going to mediate almost every aspect of our digital lives. We are going to have to rely on digital crutches to manage the overwhelming flood of information. But if I have to choose a crutch, I’d rather have one that occasionally feeds me the right words to say to my wife, rather than one that distracts me from her entirely.

'The Last House'

Genre: Horror/sci-fi movie

Why you should watch it: We love an original thriller concept, especially one that's part survival drama (unable to leave, the family has to figure out how to survive with dwindling resources) and part supernatural mystery (of course, there's a mysterious threat forcing them indoors). “The storyline will evolve in ways that the audience certainly will not expect, but that is what makes this film so interesting,” Moura told Netflix. “There are layers and twists that I can’t wait for everyone to see.”

'My Brilliant Career'

Genre: Period drama series

What it's about: Based on the classic 1901 novel by Miles Franklin, this six-part Australian drama stars Philippa Northeast as the headstrong Sybylla Melvyn, who harbors grand ambitions of being a writer — that is, until a hunk named Harry (Christopher Chung) gets in the middle of those plans.

Why you should watch it: If you're a fan of fellow romance-filled historical dramas like "Bridgerton" and "The Buccaneers," you'll surely swoon for this lush adaptation from Liz Doran ("Please Like Me," "Barons). Anna Chancellor, Genevieve O'Reilly, Kate Mulvany, Jake Dunn, Alexander England, Sherry-Lee Watson and Miah Madden also star.

There is plenty of evidence that Warner Bros. and DC's 'Supergirl' has struggled mightily. From poor box office numbers to divided critical reviews, Supergirl isn't having a good summer.

The latest blow to James Gunn's version of the DCU comes as the Milly Alcock-led movie is set to hit digital release just over a month after it was on the big screens. It's one of the fastest turnarounds for a DC movie from theater to digital since 2020.

Supergirl is in the top 10 of shortest DC movie digital release dates, though not every film on the list pivoted to digital because of underperformance at the box office.

With a 32-day theatrical window, Supergirl claims third behind two sequels: 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' and 'Joker: Folie à Deux.' The Shazam sequel released on March 17, 2023, and was on VOD by April 7, 2023. As far as I can tell, that's the shortest theatrical window for a theatrical-exclusive modern DC movie ever at 21 days.

That includes number 10 on the list, 'Birds of Prey', which debuted in February of 2020 but had an accelerated digital release thanks to the pandemic and the lockdowns that began in March of that year; it still had a 46-day window by comparison though.

However, like Folie à Deux and Fury of the Gods, Supergirl's pivot appears directly related to poor box office performance.

The movie was reportedly produced for $170 million, with a sizable $120 million marketing spend (per Variety). As of July 28, the movie has only earned back just over $124 million globally, according to The Numbers.

A confused DCU

Beyond culture warrior crap, Supergirl arrived at a weird time as James Gunn attempts to turn the DCU into Warner Bros.' own version of the floundering Marvel Cinematic Universe. Floundering might be the only thing it's gotten right.

As my colleague Rory Mellon points out, it's not that the movie is bad but that it may have been the wrong DC hero to focus on immediately after the success of David Corenswet's 'Superman.'

Unlike Marvel and its tightly connected series that all seemingly take place in the same universe, 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' aside, DC's properties are all over the map.

Matt Reeves' 'The Batman,' the upcoming Batman 2 and 'Clayface' are leaning into more of a grim and horrific vibe. Meanwhile, Supergirl felt like a toned-down 'Peacemaker' while the better-received Superman leaned more into the heart of what makes the mythological character popular.

It feels more experimental, which is vastly more interesting than whatever Marvel is currently doing, but the tone is all over the map, which means it may be harder for people to step into the universe.

James Gunn is taking risks, but as the word implies, the coin doesn't always land on the side you want.

Today Apple announced its new leasing program, Apple Upgrade which is undergirded by Klarna for iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac and iPad.

The program lets customers sign up for a plan, similar to how you would lease a car, for fixed 12-, 24- and 36-month terms depending on the device. There are options to upgrade to a new device early or return it at the end of the lease.

Apple called the new plan a "more flexible way to pay for products."

It's possible this does offer some flexibility from paying an upfront lump sum or tying yourself to an onerous contract via a network carrier like Verizon or T-Mobile.

However, experts I spoke with think the Upgrade plan is meant to cover rising component costs.

"By shifting the focus to lower monthly payments, it helps mask the effect of rising hardware costs and makes premium devices feel more affordable and attainable for a broader range of consumers," Jitesh Ubrani, a director at IDC, said.

They added that it could entice people who don't want to pay the higher upfront costs, as even Apple has hiked prices recently. It also gives Apple a "steady stream of trade-ins" that the company can resell to expand its customer base.

"Many people are effectively leasing their phones already through carrier plans; leasing a watch or a Mac -- when you know that these are also devices that have upgrade cycles -- can make sense," Techsponential's Avi Greengart told Tom's Guide. "it's still a lease, so you won't be able to use it until it dies unless you buy out the lease, and it may not be the absolute most economical approach."

Beyond upfront prices, is Apple Upgrade better for you? Let's take a look at how the program works.

How Apple Upgrade works

Apple Upgrade offers 12- or 24-month lease terms for eligible iPhones and Apple Watches. For those seeking a Mac or iPad, there are 24- or 36-month options.

Prices start as low as $11.99 per month for the Apple Watch and iPad, depending on size and storage capacity. iPhones start at $17.99, while Macs can be leased starting at $24.99 a month.

You can sign up online or at an Apple Store, where you will be approved by Klarna, which does require a soft credit check that should not impact your credit score.

At the end of the lease term, you can return the device or upgrade to a newer generation or purchase it with a one-time payment.

Compared to the outgoing iPhone Upgrade program, the Apple Upgrade Program does not include AppleCare, which is a separate subscription price and varies in price depending on your device.

Per MacRumors, if you miss a payment, it will be rolled into the next month's payment with no late fees. However, if you miss three consecutive payments, the lease will end, and you will have to pay the full outstanding balance, minus the value of the device when returned. If Klarna can't collect, a debt collection agency will be sent your information.

Apple Upgrade prices

Apple is offering the entire iPhone 17 lineup, plus the iPhone Air, both the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 and three iPad options, including the iPad Air, iPad Pro and iPad mini.

For Macs, you can lease the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Studio.

Apple defaults to the 24-month leasing option, so we'll share that. The other options can lower or raise your price. Additionally, higher storage capacity or chip versions will also increase the monthly price.

Finally, the price does not include taxes and fees.

Here's how much the base model of each device will cost you.

We've separated the iPads and Macs out because these devices can have the longer 36-month term. Again, the prices below are for the base model of each device and the 24-month term.

No leasing entry-level devices

You may have noticed several Apple devices aren't eligible for the upgrade program. It includes the vanilla iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, as well as the entry-level models of almost every device category.

Availability

Apple Upgrade is available now for all of the listed devices. Apple says that a security deposit is not required and that a trade-in device could reduce monthly payments.

I will note that if you end a lease early, you could see termination fees. Also, if you don't do anything at the end of the lease, you'll be charged the purchase fee.

Lastly, hidden in the fine print, upgrading a device could increase your monthly payments, which is true for both higher-capacity versions of devices and more expensive models when new generations launch in the coming years.

Apple is supposed to introduce its next iPhone, including the rumored iPhone Ultra, in a month and a half. But who cares about that when the intriguing 20th anniversary iPhone leaks are starting to pick up steam?

The latest batch of rumors comes from the leak-tracking YouTuber AppleTrack, who covered eight major upgrades potentially coming to the iPhone 20 in his latest video.

The updates cover everything from the all-glass curved display to better internal components, including a bigger main camera and new battery technology.

All glass everything

One of the more consistent rumors we've seen is that Apple plans on making the 20th anniversary nearly all-glass, starting with the display.

AppleTrack alleges that Apple has codenamed the next iPhone "Glasswing" after a type of butterfly with see-through wings. Check out this blog on the Greta Oto from PBS for a picture of the transparent butterfly.

Simply, as we've seen before, the iPhone 20 will be bezel-less with a quad-curved display that is seamlessly attached to the glass and ceramic back panel.

Curvy

Continuing with the display, the curved design could come in two sizes: 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches. iPhones are already fairly round, but this new design could make them even curvier.

If you want an existing reference, Apple's own Watch Series 7 hints at how the iPhone 20 might look. There shouldn't be side bezels, and it should look all of a piece compared to the two-tone currently on the iPhone 17 Pro.

Sinking the island

Since the Dynamic Island was introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, there have been rumors that Apple is trying to reduce or remove the cutouts for the front-facing camera and Face ID.

Instead, Apple would replace it with under-display technology that conceals those features below the screen. It would also mean a smaller or even non-existent Dynamic Island

This is the most grain-of-salt rumor that keeps recurring. I'll believe this one when I actually see it.

Huge main camera

Currently, the iPhone 17 Pro features a lineup of 48 MP rear cameras, including the main, ultrawide and telephoto lenses. However, per AppleTrack, the iPhone 20 is going to make a massive leap to a 200MP sensor, at least for the main camera, which would match Samsung's Ultra Galaxy S series phones.

This does match rumors from earlier this year that Apple is testing out a 1/1.12-inch sensor to boost its cameras to 200MP. Though at the time it wasn't clear when this new camera would launch.

Image stabilization

Alongside a huge main camera, the ultrawide lens is supposed to get optical image stabilization. Basically, this makes recording videos smoother and less jittery.

The telephoto lens already features this tool, which helps, but you're more likely to use the ultrawide when recording video. So this should make movies even smoother.

New buttons

Clickable buttons may be a thing of the past with the iPhone 20. It's rumored that Apple will get rid of buttons for solid-state ones that provide haptic feedback. This is supposed to make the iPhone 20 more water-resistant.

Similar to the under-display rumors, haptic buttons have been rumored since at least 2022. We even reported on a patent for haptic buttons on the iPhone 20 last October.

In the case of the iPhone 20, it actually makes sense considering the all-glass design. I rate this one as more than likely if the display rumors are true.

No more speakers?

This rumor is wild and the first we've heard of it. Apparently, Apple might remove the speaker grill on the bottom of the iPhone 20.

Instead, Apple would use a "vibration technology" without the need for a speaker cutout. The vibrations would be responsible for the sound. Allegedly, this will debut with an OLED iPad mini that is supposed to launch later this year. I'm very curious about this one.

Better batteries

The final rumor surrounds power and battery. First, AppleTrack says Apple will be introducing reverse wireless charging with the iPhone 20, enabled by a new battery.

Since 2024, Chinese manufacturers like Oppo and Huawei have been introducing silicon carbon batteries in their phones, enabling larger capacity batteries to be inserted into the same space as current lithium-ion ones.

Rival Samsung finally made the leap to silicon carbon with the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra that were released this July. “We have been testing silicon batteries for quite some time. We’re looking at being very — I wouldn’t say conservative — but more taking it one step at a time," Samsung's executive VP of the Z Fold series, Jay Kim, told Tom's Guide in an interview.

Apple is known for being cautious with new technology, like waiting for a crease-free display to release its version of a foldable.

The iPhone 20 could finally be Apple's time to try the new battery technology out.

Price and release date

Apple probably won't change its usual September release window, so I expect we'll see the 20th-anniversary iPhone launch in September 2027. We should also see the iPhone Ultra 2.

As for price, the iPhone 20 likely won't be cheap. Apple just raised prices on everything but the iPhone. However, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will give us an idea of where things are trending heading next year.

We're expecting the iPhone 18 Pro models to be $200 more expensive. Currently, the iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099, so the iPhone 18 Pro could cost $1,299. The 20th anniversary might go as high as $1,399 or $1,499 if trends continue.

We're still more than a year away from launch, so we have some time to twiddle our thumbs and ponder.

This week’s selection of top new movies across the best streaming services is another busy one with plenty of options on popular platforms including Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock and more.

Thriller fans are spoilt for choice with several worthwhile picks, including “A Private Life,” which sees Jodie Foster deliver a powerhouse performance entirely in French, and a new shark survival movie on Prime Video (we’re fully in shark movie season right now). But those looking for lighter watches should consider “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” on Peacock.

There’s plenty of new movies to talk about this week, so I’ve rounded up the most noteworthy arrivals across platforms down below. Plus, here’s a guide to the top new TV shows this week, if you want to binge-watch.

‘Supergirl’ (PVOD)

The second feature film in James Gunn’s DC Extended Universe didn’t manage to capture the attention of comic book fans like “Superman." In fact, “Supergirl” proved to be anything but super at the box office, grossing an underwhelming $124 million against a production budget reportedly north of $170 million. Ouch! Just a month after release, it’s swapping the big screen for streaming, where it’ll hope to find a larger audience.

Based on the fan-favorite “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic book, Milly Alcock plays the eponymous heroine, also known as Kara Zor-El. Unlike her cousin, Clark Kent, she hasn’t taken to being a world-saving hero. Supergirl spends her days wandering between planets and visiting dive bars. But she’s forced to adopt the hero lifestyle when a ruthless villain emerges. She teams up with a young survivor (Eve Ridley) to dish out some justice.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ (Hulu)

20 years after the original strutted the catwalk, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” brings viewers back to the world of Runway magazine, luxurious designer fashion and the iconic, almost impossible-to-please editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). This long-requested follow-up is your classic legacy sequel, reuniting the original cast (including Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci), and making more than a few nods to how much time has passed since the first “Devil Wears Prada."

With the magazine business no longer in its heyday, the frosty editor-in-chief of fashion mag Runway, Miranda Priestly (Streep), is reluctantly forced to turn to her former assistant, Andy Sachs (Hathaway) for help. As the pair navigate the evolving world of print publishing, they face competition from an old colleague, Emily Charlton (Blunt). Meanwhile, Miranda’s right-hand man, Nigel (Stanley Tucci), offers his wisdom.

‘The Devil’s Mouth’ (Prime Video)

Another week, another shark movie hits streaming. The toothy thrillers served up so far this summer haven’t been of the highest quality, so here’s hoping that “The Devil’s Mouth” can buck the trend and deliver some genuine scares. While the casting of Kathryn Newton and Lana Condor offers hope it could be a cut above the low-quality shark movies already released this summer, it also comes from Jeff Wadlow, the director behind “Fantasy Island,” Kick-Ass 2,” and “Imaginary,” and those movies stink!

In “The Devil’s Mouth,” a group of five college friends signs up for a guided tour through an underwater cave system from which the movie takes its title. They plan to have one last big adventure before entering the “real world.” But what was supposed to be an unforgettable trip becomes memorable for a sinister reason when they're trapped in the submerged caves and discover there’s a bull shark swimming in the dark waters.

‘A Private Life’ (Netflix)

My colleague, Malcolm McMillan, claims this mystery thriller is “worth watching for Jodie Foster’s performance alone,” and was impressed that she portrays an American in Paris while speaking entirely in French.

I knew Foster was talented, but giving an awards-nominated performance in a second language is truly commendable. Her acclaimed work in “A Private Life” saw Foster become the first American to be nominated for a Lumière Award for Best Actress. So long as you can handle subtitles, then this thriller should be on your Netflix watchlist this week.

Dr. Lilian Steiner (Foster) is an American psychiatrist working and living in the French capital. She’s devastated to learn that a client has taken her own life. But after a visit from the client's widow, Simon (Mathieu Amalric), and daughter, Valérie (Luàna Bajrami), alongside the discovery that some of her files have been stolen, Lilian suspects foul play. Launching an investigation of her own, she becomes convinced this is a murder case.

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ (Peacock)

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is a pure sugar-rush explosion of iconic characters, colorful animation and big action-packed moments. In all the chaos, it neglects to spin much of a story (perhaps that's appropriate for a Mario movie). However, younger viewers will delight in the playful nature of Mario and pals’ latest adventure. Though I expect the majority of older watchers will find it very much a one-and-done watching experience.

Inspired by the popular “Super Mario Galaxy” video game on the Nintendo Wii, this sequel to the 2023 movie sees Mario (voiced again by Chris Pratt) take to the cosmos to assist Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson), who has been taken prisoner by Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie). Along for the ride are Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key). However, it's Jack Black’s Bowser who again steals the show.

‘The Drama’ (HBO Max)

“The Odyssey” hype is flowing with no signs of slowing down, which makes now a great time to watch “The Drama.” This darkly funny romantic comedy stars two of “The Odyssey’s” cast members, Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, and ranks as one of my favorite films of the year to date. It’s not your typical feel-good rom-com, instead trading in awkward humor, but it’s sharply written, and Pattinson and Zendaya both bring their A-game.

Charlie (Pattinson) and Emma (Zendaya) are a happy couple preparing for their impending wedding. All seems perfect until an “unexpected revelation” days before they’re due to say “I do.” This sends their relationship into a tailspin, as they are forced to confront whether they truly know each other, and if their romance is built to last. I’ll say no more, because watching this spoiler-free enhances the viewing experience.

‘Over Your Dead Body’ (AMC+)

“Over Your Dead Body” is in something of a similar mold to “The Drama”; it’s also a dark comedy about two people in a relationship that is anything but blissful. To add further intrigue, this movie also incorporates action-thriller elements, delivering a strong package of complementary genres. It’s also an American remake of a Norwegian movie called “The Trip,” but unlike some remakes, this one wasn’t branded a lazy, pointless cash-in.

Dan (Jason Segel) and Lisa (Samara Weaving) are a once-happy couple, heading towards an acrimonious split. The full Prime Video slate for August 2026 is officially in, so I’ve picked the biggest titles on the radar alongside the fresh additions dropping at the start of the month. This month includes a new teen drama packed with mystery, the fourth season of the action-thriller “Reacher,” and a romance set during a summer in Mallorca.

‘Sterling Point’ (August 5)

“Sterling Point” is a coming-of-age mystery drama series, based on an entirely original story conceived and written for the screen by Megan Park. It has a similar tone to shows like “We Were Liars” and “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” but with a distinctly Canadian setting. Set against the backdrop of a foggy island off the coast of Canada, the series is driven by a central mystery, but viewers tuning in for the romance will be pleased to know there’s also a love triangle at the heart of the story.

Seventeen-year-old Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) has always lived an ordinary life in New York with her twin brother Connor (Keen Ruffalo) and their adoptive father. Everything changes when the siblings unexpectedly inherit a remote island in Canada from the estranged grandfather they were never allowed to meet. Hoping to uncover the truth about their family’s past, Annie travels to the island, where she meets an unexpected sister named Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle) and a group of locals who are deeply connected to the property.

‘Reacher’ season 4 (August 12)

It’s time to celebrate, because “Reacher” is finally back for season 4. This time around, the series adapts Lee Child’s novel Gone Tomorrow, which focuses on a conspiracy involving government cover-ups. From the trailer alone, this season appears to take heavy inspiration from classic neo-noir detective stories, with a much darker and more claustrophobic feel than what we’ve seen before. It’s an exciting time to be a “Reacher” fan, especially with the series already renewed for season 5.

“Reacher” season 4 begins when Reacher (Alan Ritchson) witnesses a woman behaving suspiciously on a late-night New York City subway train. Before he can question her, she dies, and what appears to be a straightforward suicide quickly proves far more complicated. Determined to uncover the truth, Reacher joins forces with the woman’s brother and an NYPD homicide detective, fighting to expose the truth before those responsible can silence him for good.

‘The Last Sunrise’ (August 26)

Lastly, we have a romance flick perfect for summer, and that’s “The Last Sunrise.” The film is based on Anna Todd’s 2025 novel of the same name, with the bestselling author best known for creating the global “After” franchise. It’s also directed by Carlson Young, who previously helmed the films “Upgraded” and “The Map of Tiny Perfect Things,” so I have high hopes. As a romance fan, I’m eagerly awaiting the trailer, but even from the premise alone, I’m already intrigued.

Oriah “Ry” Pera (Maia Reficco) is a college student living with a chronic illness whose overprotective mother takes a new job in Mallorca. Hoping for a fresh start, Ry spends the summer exploring the island and meets Julián (Fernando Lindez), a charming local who introduces her to experiences she has never had before. Soon, Ry begins embracing her independence and imagining a different future. However, worsening health problems threaten to cut her journey short, forcing her to make difficult choices before the summer comes to an end.

Not that long ago, cutting the cord felt like a financial no-brainer. Swap your bloated cable package for Netflix, maybe Hulu, and suddenly you were saving hundreds of dollars a year. Fast-forward to 2026 and... well, things have changed.

Every major studio now has its own streaming platform. Hit shows are scattered across half a dozen services. Prices keep climbing. And "just one more subscription" has become the entertainment equivalent of "I'll only have one chip."

To find out just how much streaming habits have changed, we surveyed 682 Tom's Guide readers about the services they subscribe to, how much they spend each month and which streamers they'd never give up. The results paint a picture of viewers who still love streaming, but are becoming much more selective about where their money goes.

We're subscribing to how many streaming services?!

The biggest surprise wasn't that people subscribe to multiple streaming services. That ship sailed years ago. It's just how many.

Nearly 30% of respondents said they currently subscribe to seven or more streaming services. Another 39% pay for between four and six. Add it all together, and more than two-thirds of the people we surveyed have at least four subscriptions on the go.

It's easy to see how this has happened. Netflix unveils a new season of "Bridgerton." HBO Max has "The Last of Us" and "The Pitt." Hulu drops the final season of "The Bear." Apple TV keeps producing buzzy hits like "Severance." Before long, canceling one service means missing the show everyone will be talking about Monday morning.

At some point, the hardest part of movie night stopped being deciding what to watch. Now it's remembering which app it's on.

The monthly bill is starting to look a lot like cable

Of course, all those subscriptions come with a price tag.

More than 35% of respondents said they spend over $60 every month on streaming, while another 29% spend between $36 and $60. In other words, nearly two-thirds of the Tom's Guide readers we surveyed shell out at least $36 every month just to keep up with their favorite shows and movies.

It's a far cry from the early days of streaming, when subscribing to Netflix was an easy way to save money after ditching cable. Back then, one or two services gave you access to most of the TV and movies you wanted to watch. Today, that's no longer the case.

It doesn't help that nearly every major streaming service has raised prices over the past few years while introducing ad-supported tiers and premium plans. Even viewers who opt for cheaper, ad-filled subscriptions can easily find themselves paying more overall as they add yet another service to the mix.

Prime Video is everywhere, but Netflix still owns viewers' loyalty

Prime Video technically came out on top in our survey. More than 83% of respondents subscribe to Amazon's streamer, edging out Netflix at 76%.

That probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Millions of people receive Prime Video automatically as part of an Amazon Prime membership, making it less of a deliberate streaming purchase than many competitors.

But when we asked which service people would never cancel, the picture changed dramatically.

Netflix is still the one viewers won't give up

Nearly 39% of respondents said Netflix is the one paid streaming service they'd never cancel. Prime Video finished second at 29%, while every other platform couldn't even reach double digits.

That's a big gap in favor of Netflix. It suggests viewers may subscribe to lots of services throughout the year, but Netflix remains the foundation. Everything else is negotiable.

That's exactly the kind of loyalty every streamer is chasing, but nobody other than Netflix has managed to replicate.

Free streaming is big

One of the most encouraging trends in the survey is the growing popularity of free streaming. More than half of respondents use YouTube to watch free content, while nearly half use Tubi.

Pluto TV and The Roku Channel have also become regular destinations for many viewers.

Not long ago, free streaming carried a stigma. Today, FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) services offer thousands of movies, classic TV shows, live channels and even original programming. For viewers feeling the pinch of subscription costs, watching a few ads is increasingly becoming a worthwhile tradeoff.

The future of streaming looks a lot more intentional

If there's one lesson from our survey, it's this: Streaming habits are evolving.

Consumers aren't necessarily subscribing to fewer services. Instead, they're becoming more intentional about where their money goes. They're identifying the platforms they consider essential, weighing whether new releases justify another monthly bill and increasingly turning to free, ad-supported services to fill the gaps.

As streaming continues to mature — and prices continue to climb — that balancing act may become the new normal.

T-Mobile suffered from a huge network outage yesterday, affecting customers across the country.

Reports suddenly spiked to over 60,000 on the outage-tracking site Down Detector where T-Mobile customers are reporting a lack of signal or service from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles and everywhere in between.

Whilst systems eventually returned to normal, it took several hours for the reports of problems to subside.

Here's how the events progressed.

More than 60,000 outage reports

Over on DownDetector, there are currently more than 64,000 reports from users across the country.

It appears reports started flooding in around 1:00 pm Pacific before truly spiking 30 minutes later.

Outage appears National

I'm seeing outage reports from nearly every major city in the United States and multiple states from Florida and California to North Carolina and Washington.

Minnesota, Louisana, and Hawaii are all reporting issues.

THe complaints are all similar, phones are being forced into SOS mode only, though it's not clear if WiFi calling is down as well.

No response from T-Mobile

T-Mobile doesn't appear to have a network status page. I have been checking the official T-Mobile and T-Mobile customer service accounts on Twitter where customers are flooding the accounts with complaints.

However, right now the company's reps are just asking people to DM or saying they're sorry the customer is having problems.

"I’m really glad you reached out and brought this to our attention. I’d be happy to help take a closer look into what’s going on. To make sure your information stays protected, please send me a DM with your contact details and we’ll continue there," is a common response.

I have yet to see acknowledgement of the outage itself.

Megathread on Reddit has thousands of comments

I found a megathread on the T-Mobile subreddit where thousands of comments are reporting issues with their phones.

One thread seems to be that iPhone users are having more issues than Android owners. It's not clear why.

Reports are declining but still in the 10s of thousands

On Down Detector I am seeing reports declining. There are still nearly 40,000 reports which is down from the peak of 64,000.

T-Mobile messaging changes

Over on Twitter, the T-Mobile Help account messaging has changed a bit. There still isn't an official post acknowledging the outage but this is what I'm seeing now.

"Thank you for reaching out. Our teams are actively working the reports of technical challenges impacting some customers. Any service impacts are in the process of being resolved and are our highest priority. We know how critical it is to stay connected, and every available resource is focused on resolving this as quickly as possible."

I have reached out to T-Mobile for a statement and will update if I receive one.

Leveling off

Reports have leveled off to around 20,000 on Down Detector and I am still seeing comments reporting where service is out like Oakland, Maryland and Long Island, New York.

One person did say that T-Mobile engineers are on the problem per a call with customer service. Though they didn't have any other information to share.

T-Mobile finally acknowledges the outage

Over two hours after reports spiked on DD, T-Mobile has finally acknowledged the outage with a post on its T-Mobile Help account.

"Our teams are actively working on the reports of technical challenges impacting some customers. Any service impacts are in the process of being resolved and are our highest priority. We know how critical it is to stay connected and every available resource is focused on resolving this as quickly as possible."

Many people in the comments are saying that the outage has lasted even longer, up to 4 hours for many, and are upset with the company's silence to now.

Reports continue slow decline

Over on Down Detector, reports have been started declining again. It's not the steep drop that occurred a couple hours ago.

After holding level around 20,000, we just hit 16,000 as of 4:30 pm Pacific.

Most comments are still reporting SOS mode across the country but I have seen a couple posts about it being back up in California.

Taking a break but keeping an eye on things

It's getting to the end of the work day here on the West Coast. I'm taking a break to walk the dog and get some dinner going but I'll be keeping an eye on the outage and I'll let you know if anything changes.

I'm a big fan of the "Share" feature in Claude. I use it all the time to share Skills, Artifacts and conversations, mostly. But now I'm going to think twice before sharing.

Over the weekend, security researchers and Reddit users discovered that hundreds of publicly shared Claude conversations could be found using Google search operators like site:claude.ai/share. The issue only affected chats that users had intentionally shared using Claude's public sharing feature — private conversations that were never shared were not exposed.

Still, the discovery caught many users by surprise because the conversations were turning up in ordinary search results, making them far easier to find than many people expected.

What happened?

Claude lets you generate a public link to a conversation so you can share it with someone else. That feature creates a snapshot of the chat at the moment you click Share.

Anthropic's documentation notes that "anyone with the link can view the chat snapshot." The problem wasn't that private conversations suddenly became public, but that it was that some of those public links were indexed by search engines after they were discovered elsewhere on the web.

Researchers who examined the indexed pages reported finding everything from software debugging sessions and internal business discussions to resumes, API keys, crypto wallet information and legal research. While those conversations had been intentionally shared at some point, many users appeared to assume the links functioned more like unlisted documents than publicly searchable web pages.

By Monday, many of the indexed results had already disappeared from Google Search, suggesting the pages were being removed from search results or changes had been made to prevent further indexing.

Should you be worried?

If you've never used Claude's Share feature, this issue doesn't affect you. Likewise, chats that remained private inside your Claude account were not exposed.

However, if you've shared conversations in the past — especially ones containing work documents, personal information, code or anything confidential, it's worth checking which links are still active.

Even if a page no longer appears in Google Search, anyone who already has the shared URL can still access that conversation until you remove the share.

How to check your shared Claude chats

You can view your shared conversations by signing in to your Claude account:

Open Settings.

Select Privacy.

Click Shared Chats.

Review your active shared links and delete any you no longer want to be public.

If a conversation contains sensitive information, removing the share link immediately revokes public access.

A good reminder for every AI chatbot

This isn't the first time an AI company's sharing feature has raised privacy concerns. Similar issues have surfaced before with ChatGPT as users increasingly treat AI assistants like private notebooks, only to discover that sharing a conversation creates a public webpage rather than a private collaboration link.

Whether you're using Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant, it's worth assuming that anything you intentionally publish with a share link could eventually be discovered by someone else. Before clicking Share, take a moment to make sure the conversation doesn't include passwords, API keys, financial information, customer data or anything you'd be uncomfortable seeing on the open web.

While Silicon Valley races to strap cameras, speakers and multimodal surveillance tools onto our faces, one smart glasses maker is picking a fight direct with Big Tech’s entire playbook.

Meta, Google and Snap want you to believe that a front-facing camera is essential for the future of AI wearables. Apple’s even rumored to be jumping in on this too. But according to Will Wang, Founder and CEO of Even Realities, their camera obsession isn’t about giving you a better device today — it’s about harvesting your personal life to train their future AI models.

Following a major $1 billion valuation round, I sat down with Wang to talk about the design choices behind the Even Realities G2 smart glasses. His message to the tech giants was loud, clear and strikingly defiant.

The ‘endgame’ trap

If you ask Meta why the Ray-Ban Meta glasses feature an ultra-wide camera, they will point to visual AI — the ability for your glasses to see what you see and help in real-time.

Wang sees this differently. In his view, companies like Meta and Google are letting their long-term corporate ambitions spoil their current hardware.

"When you look at the strategies of Snap, Google, or Meta, their long-term vision often overly influences their current generation of products," Wang explained. "For Google and Meta, they include a camera because they believe visual data will be crucial for AI in the future, and to reach that endgame, they need to enable visual capabilities and start gathering data now."

The result? Heavy, power-hungry devices designed for future data gathering rather than present-day wearability.

"I feel these larger companies let their endgame thinking dictate their current products instead of focusing on making the perfect product for the present moment," Wang noted. "For a hardware company, it is crucial that each generation does not sell a dream or an expectation, but sells the product as it is."

‘We thrive on making good products, not selling data’

Even Realities took the opposite path with its glasses — completely stripping away cameras and speakers, and opting for a discreet heads-up display that delivers notifications, teleprompting, navigation and live conversation summaries in your field of view.

When I asked Wang if a camera prototype was ever on the table during internal testing, he shut the idea down immediately.

"From day one, even with the first-generation G1, we never had a camera," Wang said. "We feel that, at the current moment with the capability of AI, adding a camera onto a pair of glasses definitely introduces many more downsides than upsides."

Beyond the obvious hardware penalties (added weight, larger size and worse battery life), Wang pointed directly to the ethical and regulatory landmines that Big Tech seems content to ignore.

"The guardrails and regulations around how to properly use visual data with smart glasses have not been established," Wang pointed out. "So, we feel it's too early, too risky, and has too little upside for a company like ours that does not thrive on selling data. We thrive on making good products and making a profit from those products, so a camera was never in the discussion."

Instead of overpromising an invasive sci-fi feature set, Even Realities focused on what actually works today: crisp, text-based ambient computing that keeps you present in the real world without creeping out the people around you.

David vs. Goliath: the battle for G3

It’s easy to dismiss a startup taking anti-camera ideological stances against multi-trillion-dollar titans. But Even Realities is no longer just a niche player catering to early adopters.

While the original G1 was built by a scrappy skeleton crew, the company’s massive recent funding round has allowed them to quietly build a massive engineering war machine to prepare for their next generation of hardware: the Even Realities G3.

"To give you some context, when we built G1, our team was only 20 to 30 people," Wang revealed. "For G2, we had about 70 to 80 people... Now, for G3, we have 300 to 400 people globally working laser-focused on this single product line."

That headcount puts Even Realities on a similar dedicated engineering scale to the smart glasses divisions that Apple, Meta or Google have — but with one massive structural advantage. While Big Tech giants split their resources across dozens of spatial computing projects, AR headsets and ad platforms, Wang’s team is focused solely on perfecting one lightweight, ambient device.

"We are on the radar of a lot of these bigger players; they are already buying our products and trying to analyze our roadmap," Wang said with a smile. "We really need to accelerate faster than before, and this round of fundraising actually gives us that. We are very confident."

The war is on

The smart glasses war is dividing into two distinct camps. On one side, Meta and Google want to turn your face into a sensor array to fuel their AI algorithms. On the other, Even Realities wants to give you a clean, distraction-free HUD that respects your privacy and actually looks like a normal pair of glasses.

If Will Wang has his way with the upcoming G3, the winner of the smart glasses revolution won’t be the company that records the most video of your daily life — it will be the one that lets you look the world in the eye without a camera watching back.

Netflix's Kevin Hart-led buddy comedy "72 Hours" became the latest No. 1 movie on the platform, which just goes to show that you can't always trust Netflix's ranking. It's currently sitting at a 14% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with audience reactions not quite as scathing but still lukewarm at 49%. I'm tired of pretending Kevin Hart is still funny, and that's coming from someone who raved about his early stand-up comedy specials. His Napoleon complex schtick has gotten old, and if you ask me, there are much better comedies on Netflix that are worth you precious streaming time this weekend.

I've rounded up a few of my favorites below, including a girl failure comedy that I return to again and again when it's just been one of them days, a new(ish) chaotic double act with John Cena and Eric André, and one of the most controversial buddy comedies to date that I still stand by, 20 years later.

'One of Them Days' (2025)

Keke Palmer and SZA's girl failure buddy comedy "One of Them Days" is one of those movies I return to whenever I need a good laugh (one joke about a "tumble-weave" never fails to crack me up). Directed by Lawrence Lamont, it follows two broke besties, Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) who find themselves desperate for cash after Alyssa's boyfriend Keshawn (Joshua Neal) runs off with their rent money.

With just hours to cough up with $1,500 before their landlord kicks them out, the two scramble to hit a lick by any means necessary — and manage to piss off a major gang banger in the process. Though "One of Them Days" has plenty of laughs, beneath the chaos and a great cameo by Katt Williams is a genuinely sweet story about the lengths we go to for family. Palmer and SZA are hilarious together, and if you’re into comedies with a lot of heart, this one’s worth adding to your watchlist. Plus it has a 94% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a rare feat for a buddy comedy.

'Little Brother' (2026)

While it's fallen from the Netflix Top 10 since its debut last month, I still laughed way harder at "Little Brother" than I did at "72 Hours," so I opted to include it as a more recently released option to watch. If, like me, you're a big fan of both "The Eric André Show" and John Cena's unhinged straight man brand of humor ("Peacemaker" was one of my favorite shows last year), you should definitely check out Netflix's buddy comedy "Little Brother."

Cena stars as successful real estate agent Rudd, whose stable — if less-than-fulfilling — life is thrown into chaos when his former mentee Marcus (Eric André) crashes back into his orbit at the worst possible moment. A chaos magnet with a knack for turning every situation into a catastrophe, Marcus leaves Rudd scrambling to clean up the fallout his antics cause. "Little Brother" leans heavily into slapstick, with most of the humor coming from the clash between Cena's perpetually exasperated straight-man performance with André's off-the-wall energy.

'White Chicks' (2004)

Another excuse to write about "White Chicks"? Don't mind if I do! Over 20 years after it hit theaters, "White Chicks" crept into the Netflix Top 10 earlier this month, which had me cackling and just goes to show how lackluster the streamer's summer lineup has been so far. My friends and I were just talking about how "White Chicks" is one of those unapologetically dumb comedies we'll defend forever, in the same vein as the original "Scary Movie" — which I still argue is the only good "Scary Movie."

Directed by the undisputed best Wayans brother, "White Chicks" stars Shawn and Marlon Wayans as FBI agents Kevin and Marcus Copeland, whose careers are not long for this world after yet another botched assignment. With one final chance to prove themselves, they're stuck babysitting wealthy socialites Brittany and Tiffany Wilson during a weekend in the Hamptons. To go undercover, the two Black agents disguise themselves as white women, resulting in one outrageous fish-out-of-water gag after another as well as an iconic serenade from Terry Crews.

Kimi Antonelli will be aiming to extend his lead at the top of the drivers' standings ahead of the summer break as Formula 1 heads to Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix (July 24-26). The Mercedes driver holds a 45-point advantage at the summit after winning at Spa last week.

Antonelli's bid to become the youngest Formula 1 world champion appeared to be rocking after seeing his lead narrow to 25 points, but the 19-year-old is back in control following a near-perfect weekend in Belgium. Not only did the Italian win from pole position to claim his sixth grand prix victory of the season, but teammate and nearest challenger George Russell crashed out in a collision with Lewis Hamilton on the opening lap.

Hamilton, who was able to continue and came home fourth, is now second in the championship, five points ahead of Russell. The two Brits appear to be the only drivers capable of catching Antonelli, with fourth-place Charles Leclerc already 78 points behind after he was passed by the teenager and had to settle for second.

Antonelli has the chance to strike a huge psychological blow to the chasing pack if he can further stretch his advantage in Budapest, which is the last grand prix for four weeks before the season resumes in the Netherlands in late August.

‘Monsters of God'

For this five-part documentary series, filmmaker Eric Goode slithers his way into the underground yet billion-dollar world of exotic animal smuggling, populated by outlaw traffickers (including industry legends Hank Molt and Tommy Crutchfield), unhinged collectors and the law enforcement agents on their metaphorical tails.

Goode's gonzo doc took home the Audience Award at SXSW 2026, and if you're into so-weird-it-must-be-true crime tales like "Tiger King" and "Chimp Crazy," this should be right up your alley. Episodes will roll out weekly.

'Normal'

A team-up between Bob Odenkirk, "John Wick" creator Derek Kolstad and "Free Fire" filmmaker Ben Wheatley, this neo-Western sees the "Better Call Saul" great as an unassuming small-town sheriff with a troubled past. In fictitious Normal, Minnesota, Odenkirk's Sheriff Ulysses inadvertently gets sucked into a dark, town-wide conspiracy after a botched bank robbery interrupts the peace of his provisional posting. Soon enough, Normal isn't seeming so "normal" after all.

The lively action comedy features a crowd-pleasing cast including Henry Winkler, Lena Heady, Ryan Allen, Billy MacLellan, Brendan Fletcher, Reena Jolly and Peter Shinkoda.

‘Lanterns’

Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre play Green Lanterns of different generations in this eight-episode DC Comics drama, a demographical difference that allows for some enjoyable tension between their respective characters, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Old Lantern legend Jordan is tasked with mentoring rookie recruit Stewart as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. However, that earthly case soon takes on an extraterrestrial edge, leading the duo to darker mysteries and reckonings.

The superhero series also stars Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

Sure, there seems to be a proliferation of celebrity-focused travel shows of late, but if there's anyone we'd want to go flailing around the world with, it's Conan O'Brien.

The third installment of his hilarious, Emmy-winning travelogue series will feature four episodes of the famous funnyman connecting with fans he first met on his "Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan" podcast and experiencing local cultures in India, the Philippines, the Netherlands and Morocco. Ridiculous shenanigans unsurprisingly ensue, with episodes released weekly.

‘Mother Mary'

Somehow, in between filming 2026 titles "The Odyssey," "Devil Wears Prada 2," "The End of Oak Street" and "Verity," Anne Hathaway managed to fit in this David Lowery-directed psychological drama. The Oscar winner plays the titular Mother Mary, a world-famous pop icon who reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of a big comeback performance. As the two women collaborate, they are forced to confront the pain of their past partnership and personal traumas.

Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown with Sian Clifford and FKA twigs also appear.

'Making Manson'

He's arguably America's most mythologized murderer, but in this three-part docuseries by Billie Mintz ("Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them"), the psyche of infamous criminal and cult leader Charles Manson is frightfully deconstructed via over 100 hours of previously unreleased recorded interviews and conversations with the man himself.

In these jailhouse tapes, Manson — who died at 83 years old at a Kern County hospital in 2017 whilst serving multiple life sentences for orchestrating the brutal 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders — details the childhood trauma and schoolboy cruelty he experienced as a youth, as well as the early crimes and psychological motivations that would lead to that late-'60s murder spree. The doc also sees former members of the so-called Manson Family listen to Manson's testimony and grapple with their own roles in the group's dark legacy.

'The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets'

Chilling in its recency, "The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets" recounts the horrific crimes and conviction of Long Island architect Rex Heuermann, who was sentenced to life in prison without parole in June 2026 for strangling and killing eight women between 1993 and 2010, disposing of their remains along the coast of eastern New York.

The case alone is haunting enough, but the three-part Peacock Original docuseries adds an extra layer of horror by including exclusive commentary from Heuermann's own kin, including his estranged wife Asa Ellerup, their daughter Victoria and stepson Christopher, who were all allegedly unaware of the dark double life the family patriarch was leading, as well as the fact that many of those killings happened directly inside their Massapequa Park home.

'The Idaho Student Murders'

Based on the true crime podcast "The Idaho Massacre," this gripping 90-minute documentary focuses on the pre-trial case of Bryan Kohberger, a twentysomething criminology student accused of brutally stabbing to death four University of Idaho coeds — Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin — in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho, in November 2022.

With Kohberger facing four first-degree murder charges as well as the death penalty for the heinous crimes, the Catherine Park-directed doc delves into Kohberger’s past and possible motivations and also features emotional and unprecedented interviews with Kaylee Goncalves’ brother and friends of the victims.

'From' season 5 release speculation

Since “From” season 4 finished airing at the end of June, we still don’t have a release window for season 5, and it could be some time before an official date is announced. For now, we can only make an educated guess based on the show’s previous release patterns.

Historically, “From” has had a gap of around 14 to 19 months between seasons. Season 1 premiered in February 2022, season 2 followed in April 2023, season 3 arrived in September 2024, and season 4 aired from April to June 2026. Filming in Halifax, Nova Scotia, typically takes around five to six months, followed by several months of post-production and editing.

With MGM+ confirming that season 5 will serve as the show’s final chapter, a mid-2027 release window seems like a realistic possibility, with summer 2027 being a likely timeframe based on the production schedule. However, this remains speculation until MGM+ announces an official release date.

'From' season 5 filming updates

“From” has officially started filming its fifth and final season, moving quickly from the end of season 4 into production! Following MGM+’s renewal announcement on April 15, 2026, filming began in early July 2026, with production returning to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Principal photography started on July 6, and filming is expected to continue until November 2026, followed by additional pickup shots later in the month. The fast turnaround suggests MGM+ is aiming to deliver the show’s final chapter sometime in 2027, which aligns with our release window speculation.

Production has also been confirmed through behind-the-scenes updates from the cast. Corteon Moore, who plays Ellis Stevens, shared photos from the Halifax set, confirming that filming was underway. Hannah Cheramy, who portrays Julie Matthews, also shared images from table reads featuring several returning cast members.

Further evidence of the busy production schedule came when Harold Perrineau, who stars as Boyd Stevens and serves as an executive producer, cancelled his appearance at Comic Con Midlands in July 2026 due to his filming commitments on “From” season 5.

'From' season 5 cast

The full cast list for “From” season 5 has not been officially released yet, but the main returning cast is expected to include the majority of the surviving characters from season 4. It’s unlikely the showrunners will introduce new cast members given this is the final season, and there may not be enough time to focus on new characters.

What we do know is that season 4 kept the body count coming, drastically shifting the stakes right before the series rolls into its fifth and final season. While a few minor background casualties occurred throughout the season, two major main characters met brutal ends in the season 4 finale (spoilers ahead).

Elgin’s tragic arc came to a head when he finally realized he was being manipulated by the dark forces of the town. When he refused to align with Sophia, who was revealed to be the shapeshifting Man in Yellow, his hands were crushed and he bled out in a fast, devastating turn of events. Marielle was also brutally killed when the terrifying Smiley creature breached the clinic, leaving her to die in Kristi’s arms.

It wasn't just them, though, because even side characters got gnarly treatment. Earlier in the season, Roger met a bizarrely horrifying end when his jaw was ripped off by one of the possessed dolls.

So, while we know which characters won’t be returning, it looks like almost the entire surviving ensemble will be back to help bring the story to a conclusion. Below is a list of characters who are likely to return in some capacity for “From” season 5:

'From' season 5 plot speculation

With season 5 set to serve as the show’s final, endgame chapter, fan speculation and theories have reached a fever pitch. Because show creators John Griffin and Jeff Pinkner designed season 4 and season 5 as a unified two-part conclusion, the board is effectively flipped, setting up a race against time.

Here is a breakdown of the leading plot speculations and narrative arcs driving the discussion for season 5 (again, spoilers ahead!):

Season 5 could begin with the town in its most dangerous state yet following the loss of the talismans. After Sophia (The Man in Yellow) threw them into the Faraway Tree/Bottle Tree network, the survivors are left completely exposed. With the sky remaining permanently dark, the creatures may no longer be restricted to hunting at night, forcing Boyd and the others to abandon their homes, retreat into the tunnels, or find new ways to protect themselves before the town is overrun.

One of the biggest mysteries heading into the final season is Fatima’s transformation. After her disturbing change in the tunnels and Smiley referring to her as “Mother,” it appears she may be losing her humanity. While some fans believe Fatima could become the next major threat, others theorize she could become a protector or even a weapon against the creatures. Because her transformation didn’t follow the same rules as previous sacrifices, there’s still a possibility that she has some humanity left and could turn against the monsters.

Meanwhile, Jade and Tabitha’s discovery of the ancient bones could hold the key to finally escaping Fromville. Despite the destruction caused by the tunnel collapse, the pair managed to recover them, and many fans believe they are connected to the ritual needed to break the cycle. Jade’s ability to decode the town’s mysteries will likely become even more important as he uncovers how the bones connect to Fromville’s history, the curse, and his and Tabitha’s mysterious past-life connection.

Going off that, Julie’s storywalking ability could play a major role in the ending. Rather than simply observing events from the past, Julie may discover a way to influence them, potentially changing key moments that shaped Fromville’s history. Her powers could allow the survivors to uncover the origins of the curse, prevent past tragedies, or weaken the entity’s control once and for all.

The final season is also expected to explore the growing conflict between the Man in Yellow and the Boy in White. Season 4 suggested that Fromville is controlled by opposing forces, with the Man in Yellow representing manipulation and the entity keeping people trapped, while the Boy in White appears to guide the survivors toward freedom. Season 5 could finally reveal who created this strange pocket dimension, why certain people are drawn there, and the true rules behind the curse.

All the best streaming services use AI in some form or another to serve up recommendations for what to watch, but Prime Video's looking to go all in. According to a Reuters report this week, Jeff Bezos is personally pushing Amazon’s Prime Video executives toward a major app redesign to turn the streaming platform into a marquee showcase for Amazon's multi-billion-dollar investments in AI technology for its 200+ million active viewers.

Internally codenamed Project Lighthouse, the effort is just one piece of Amazon's companywide AI efforts to compete against the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic. Lighthouse would comb through a subscriber's viewing preferences, using AI for improved film and TV recommendations and to respond to spoken requests, one person with knowledge of the project told Reuters. The final redesign is still in the works, but it could drastically change your home page and how you find what to watch next. We've reached out to Amazon for comment, and will update this story once we hear back.

Following a tense internal presentation last fall, Bezos rejected earlier redesign proposals from Prime Video head Mike Hopkins, expressing frustration that they did not go far enough in leveraging generative AI for improved personalization. The team scrapped those plans and started fresh under Global Head of Design Kam Keshmiri. So far this year, the company's dropped $200 billion in capital expenditures, mostly related to developing AI, Reuters reports.

Potential changes with Prime Video's AI redesign

Again, Prime Video's AI overhaul is far from finalized, but one part of the redesign under consideration would introduce AI-powered content tiles that surface curated viewing suggestions, such as "1980s action movies" or "Christmas rom-coms," three people familiar with the discussions told Reuters. Netflix employs similar categories to help direct viewers find other movies and shows in genres they gravitate toward.

The overhaul could also reshape how movies and TV shows are promoted on Prime Video. Right now, studios pay for premium placement on the service's homepage alongside recommendations generated by Amazon's algorithms, a practice that's standard among streaming platforms.

Amazon has reportedly already begun testing early versions of the redesign with a limited group of users. However, the final product could still change based on tester feedback, budget considerations, or other internal factors. The redesigned interface would still include the standard search bar, along with a dedicated area at the top of the homepage to spotlight new releases and live events, including Amazon's exclusive "Thursday Night Football" broadcasts.

‘Wicked: For Good'

John Chu’s 2025 movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, "Wicked: For Good," just landed on Netflix this week, and to absolutely no one's surprise, it's already in the top 10. Though if you ask me, there are much better musicals on Netflix that are more worth your time. With all the best songs of "Wicked" in the first half, I knew "For Good" would struggle to stack up, but Glinda's new song and a few smart creative liberties to help buoy the less prolific singers (*cough* Jeff Goldblum*) managed to delight well enough.

It picks up right after "Wicked's" gravity-defying conclusion, with Elphaba now in her Wicked Witch of the West era on the run from the Wizard (Goldblum). Many of her old pals from Shiz now lead the mob calling for her head. Glinda and Elphaba clash over what's best for Oz, but when a mysterious storm sends a young girl from Kansas (and her little dog too) crashing into their world, it changes their lives for good.

'A Toxic Love Story'

Another weekend finds another true crime documentary trending on Netflix. Based on the title, you might think you know what you're in for — and you'd be wrong. This is one of Netflix's wildest true crime docs yet, with plenty of WTF moments before the final reveal as the mystery unravels.

At the center of it all is U.S. Deputy Marshal Ian Diaz and his wife, Ashley, a couple who started receiving threats shortly after getting married. They traced them back to Ian's ex, Michelle, and she was eventually arrested. But this isn't your stereotypical "crazy ex girlfriend" plot. The search also surfaces a Craig's List ad suggesting Ashely was looking to fulfill a rape fantasy, and the story only gets crazier from there. If you're a true crime fan, this movie is a must-watch.

‘Ordinary Angels' (2023)

This fan-favorite Alan Ritchson movie has a near-perfect 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's a staple whenever I go to visit my in-laws back in Kentucky. Directed by Jon Gunn, "Ordinary Angels" is based on the true story of a Kentucky community that rallied together to help save the life of a young girl.

Hilary Swank stars as Sharon Stevens, a down-on-her-luck hairdresser who steps up to help widowed father Ed Schmitt (Ritchson) as he struggles to care for his two young daughters following his wife's sudden death. When one of the girls needs a life-saving liver transplant, Sharon unites the community to support the family through their darkest days, even as one of the worst snowstorms in Kentucky's history bears down on them.

It seems unfathomable how quickly summer is moving, but it's true: August is shortly upon us. And with the arrival of a new month comes a fresh wave of film titles and television shows to the industry's top streaming services. And as two of the biggest names in the streaming game, both Hulu and Disney+ will unsurprisingly welcome a hot batch of buzzy and brilliant new shows and movies to their already extensive selections this month.

Over on Disney+, August sees the very long-awaited (we're talking more than 15 years, ya'll) arrival of a new "Camp Rock" movie for the kiddos and the kids at heart. For more adult viewers, there's a new season of animated favorite "Futurama," as well as a pulpy new prep-school program from the Ryan Murphy camp, based on the 2023 horror novel by Bret Easton Ellis.

'Futurama' season 14

The folks behind the long-running animated sitcom — which follows a New York City pizza delivery boy (voiced by Billy West) who accidentally freezes himself in 1999 and gets defrosted in the year 3000 to find himself surrounded by hard-drinking robots, lovely cyclops and the like — promise "a non-stop onslaught of swaggering space pirates, lab-grown meats and sexy scams" in the upcoming fourteenth season of "Futurama," which premieres with two episodes on Monday, August 3. (Episodes will then be released one-at-a-time every subsequent Monday.) Along with West, the original voice cast will be back, including Katey Segal and John DiMaggio.

'The Shards'

Based on Bret Easton Ellis' semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, FX's "The Shards" comes courtesy of Ellis himself as well as Ryan Murphy, so you know some campy TV fun is in your future if you choose to tune into the new teen thriller. Premiering August 5 on Hulu, the 1980s-set series follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite Los Angeles prep school whose universe gets rattled by a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere), whose arrival unsettlingly coincides with the activities of a serial killer known as The Trawler. The cast also includes Kaia Gerber, Wes Bentley, Graham Campbell, Hayes Warner and Igby Rigney as Bret Easton Ellis.

'Camp Rock 3'

OG "Camp Rock" fans are now well and grown, but they can introduce a whole new generation to the movie-musical franchise with the long-awaited sequel "Camp Rock 3," which arrives 16 years in the making (yes, 16!) on August 14. The latest chapter of the trilogy sees original stars Jonas Brothers and Maria Canals-Barrera reprise their roles from the previous films, starring alongside Sherry Cola, Liamani Segura, and Malachi Barton.

When the opening act for Connect 3 cancels at the last minute, the band decides to return to their beloved Camp Rock and host a competition to find new talent to join their national tour. Talented campers are soon ruthlessly vying for the chance to join the group's reunion tour, testing friendships, stoking tensions and leading to unexpected alliances.

As the “Walking Dead” universe continues to expand, “Dead City” has established itself as one of the franchise’s most successful spinoffs. The series takes place in a crumbling Manhattan, anchored by television’s most complicated duo: Maggie Rhee and Negan Smith. Their traumatic history needs no introduction. Ever since Negan brutally murdered Maggie’s husband, Glenn, the pair have been bound together by grief and revenge. Yet somehow, that explosive tension has become the absolute heartbeat of the show.

Now, heading into season 3, online speculation has hit a fever pitch with wild theories that the series might actually push Maggie and Negan into romantic territory. Predictably, the mere thought of a romance has sparked massive outrage across the fandom, and honestly, fair enough. Personally, I don't believe the showrunners would ever cross that unforgivable line (though I’m still mildly unsettled by that promo clip where she laughs and gently touches his face, but let’s conveniently ignore that for now).

Before the new season kicks off, here are five crucial things to remember about “The Walking Dead: Dead City,” including where the story left off in season 2.

1. Breaking the cycle of revenge

The relationship between Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has always been defined by the trauma of Negan murdering Maggie’s husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun). For the first two seasons, their story was built around a cycle of anger, betrayal, forced teamwork, and unresolved hatred. However, the season 2 finale completely changed the direction of their relationship.

During the finale, Maggie saw Negan return to his terrifying “Savior” persona while taking down rival gang leader Bruegel (Kim Coates) through psychological warfare, Lucille and a deadly methane trap. Believing Negan had not changed, Maggie attacked him and stabbed him in the back. But as Negan struggled to survive, Maggie realized he wasn’t trying to escape for himself; he was desperately trying to reach Ginny (Mahina Napoleon), the surrogate daughter he had sworn to protect.

When Maggie and Perlie Armstrong (Gaius Charles) found Ginny’s cell, they discovered she had died from her injuries and turned into a walker. Devastated, Negan was forced to put Ginny down himself. Seeing Negan completely break down made Maggie realize that his violent exterior was often a shield for the people he cared about. She understood that killing him would not bring Glenn back or heal her pain, so she finally let go of her need for revenge.

Instead, Maggie helped save Negan’s life by removing the knife and treating his wounds, bringing their long-running feud to an end. No longer forced to work together because of circumstance, Maggie and Negan now share the same goal: building a lasting community in Manhattan in season 3.

2. Hershel’s transformation under the Dama’s control

While Maggie has chosen reconciliation and a path away from violence, her son Hershel (Logan Kim) has moved in the opposite direction. Influenced by The Dama (Lisa Emery), who survived the fire earlier in season 2, Hershel has grown distant from his mother and now stands against her vision of peace.

The Dama intentionally preyed on Hershel’s anger toward Maggie, using his feelings of abandonment and resentment over her years-long focus on Negan to gain his trust. She saw Hershel as someone who could be shaped by her beliefs, having grown up without memories of the old world. Under The Dama’s influence, Hershel came to believe that Maggie sparing Negan was a mistake and a sign that she was too weak to protect their family.

When Maggie revealed in the season 2 finale that she chose to spare Negan in order to end their cycle of violence, Hershel reacted with anger and refused to forgive her. Rejecting his mother’s attempts to bring him home, he chose to stay in New York with The Dama. Heading into season 3, Maggie knows her biggest opponent is being guided by her own son.

3. The new battle for Manhattan and the rise of New Babylon

The balance of power in post-apocalyptic New York City completely changed during the season 2 finale. Throughout the first two seasons, Manhattan was controlled by rival factions, mainly the Burazi, led by The Croat (Željko Ivanek) and influenced by The Dama, and Bruegel’s group. However, when Negan killed Bruegel, one of the island’s major criminal organizations collapsed, creating a power vacuum that was quickly filled by the arrival of the New Babylon Federation.

The Federation launched a large-scale invasion across the Hudson River, sending armed forces into Manhattan to take control of its resources. Their main goal is capturing the island’s methane production facilities, which provide a vital energy source by using harvested walker biomass to power technology.

This invasion forces old enemies to unite. Perlie, who was originally sent by New Babylon to capture Negan, turned against the Federation after witnessing their brutality. He joined Maggie and Negan to help unite Manhattan’s survivors into a resistance force.

4. Seth Hoffman’s new direction and the show’s tone shift

Season 3 marks a major creative shift for “Dead City” under new showrunner Seth Hoffman. A veteran writer and executive producer from the original “The Walking Dead” era, known for episodes like “Too Far Gone” and “No Way Out,” Hoffman brings a new approach to the series.

While the earlier seasons focused on a darker, more claustrophobic story built around captivity, revenge, and constant conflict, Hoffman shifts the tone toward hope, bigger world-building, and dark humor. The story moves beyond simply surviving and instead focuses on rebuilding society and creating a new home within the ruins of Manhattan.

To support this expanded vision, season 3 introduces several new characters who help grow the world:

• Renata (Aimee Garcia): The leader of an independent Manhattan settlement with a complicated past involving The Croat. Her group joins forces with Maggie and Negan to fight against the New Babylon invasion.
• Dr. Luis (Raúl Castillo): Renata’s brother and a skilled doctor who becomes a mentor to Hershel Rhee, encouraging him to follow his family’s medical legacy.
• Dillard (Jimmi Simpson): An eccentric bartender who has survived alone inside a Manhattan tavern. Years of isolation have led him to believe he can communicate with the dead, creating an unusual and comedic friendship with Negan.

5. Beth Greene is (kinda) coming back

Season 3 takes “The Walking Dead” franchise in a new direction with a concept-driven alternate reality episode that explores the emotional journeys of its main characters. Instead of a traditional flashback, the episode imagines a world where the zombie outbreak never happened.

This allows the return of Emily Kinney as Beth Greene, Maggie’s younger sister who died during season 5 of the original series. Set in a peaceful, untouched Central Park, the alternate timeline explores the lives Maggie, Negan, and their families could have had if society had survived.

The episode serves an important emotional purpose, especially for Maggie. Reuniting with Beth (emotionally) gives her a chance to finally confront the grief she has carried for years and find a sense of closure. For the series as a whole, the alternate reality raises an interesting question: without the apocalypse, would Maggie and Negan have become better versions of themselves?

Comedy fans may note that another Britcom successfully translated Stateside had less impact in Oz, with “The Office” recently cancelled after one season, but “Ghosts” promises to hit all the right notes, having already received favourable reviews for its uniquely Aussie take on the franchise.

Another weekend is here, which means the question of what to watch is fresh on our minds. It's slim pickings this week among the new releases across the best streaming services, especially on Netflix, where a godawful Kevin Hart comedy is the main headliner this weekend.

Over on paid video-on-demand platforms, you can catch "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" for more of the Pedro Pascal and baby Yoda dynamic duo fans fell in love with from the show. Paramount+ has a new Avatar movie, "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender," that I'm not convinced needed to exist, but if it means more Toph kicking ass in my life, then yes, please.

Over on Prime Video, you can catch the darling animated adventure "The Wild Robot" from the same creator of "Lilo & Stitch" and "How to Train Your Dragon" series. Finally, Netflix just got the second part of "Wicked" if you're looking to get our sing-along on this weekend. So without further ado, let's dive into the best new movies to watch this weekend.

'The Dink' (Apple TV)

One of the few original movies debuting on streaming this week is "The Dink," a new Apple TV sports comedy from director Josh Greenbaum ("Strays" and "Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar"). My boy Jake Johnson stars as a washed-up tennis pro named Dusty Boyd who finds a shot at redemption in the unlikeliest of places: on the pickleball court.

Through a bizarre twist of fate, Dusty ends up joining a pickleball quartet made up of older women, where he quickly develops a crush on their charismatic leader (Mary Steenburgen). But his newfound passion for the sport comes with high stakes, as he’s forced to face off against his longtime nemesis with the future of his father's country club hanging in the balance. The film also features Chloe Fineman, Patton Oswalt, Fortune Feimster, Chris Parnell, Ben Stiller, and a scene-stealing Aaron Chen as Dusty’s trusty sidekick.

'Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu' (PVOD)

The lowest-grossing Star Wars movie in history made its way to paid-video-on-demand platforms this week. You're better off waiting for it to arrive on Disney+ in a few months, but if you need your Baby Yoda fix now, have at it. "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" never quite justifies its full-length movie treatment, feeling instead like a mini "Mandalorian" marathon retrofitted to the big screen, which might explain the poor theatrical performance.

The galaxy's dreamiest bounty hunter and his pint-sized companion return for a new adventure. Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu take on a mission for the New Republic to rescue Rotta the Hutt (voiced by "The Bear's" Jeremy Allen White), Jabba's heir, from a rival crime syndicate to get some juicy intel on an Imperial warlord. Their assignment spirals into a galaxy-spanning adventure filled with all the blaster fights and Force magic you'd expect of a Star Wars outing.

'Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender' (Paramount+)

Did we really need more of Team Avatar? Eh. Debatable. Will I be sat down to watch this weekend? Absolutely. If only to see Toph (voiced by Dionee Quan) get the epic fight scenes we all hoped for in "The Legend of Korra." Directed by Lauren Montgomery, the film takes place after the events of the original animated series and follows an older Avatar Aang (voiced by Eric Nam), now grown up and setting out with his friends on a mission to rebuild the long-lost Air Nation.

To do that, he'll need an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction, but if it falls into the wrong hands first, it spells doom for the Air Nation's future. Expanding the world of “Avatar” with a new chapter in Aang’s journey, this has all the makings of an essential watch for longtime fans.

'Wicked: For Good' (Netflix)

John M. Chu’s 2025 movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, "Wicked: For Good," just landed on Netflix — though if you ask me, there are much better musicals on Netflix that are more worth your time. Let's be real, all the best "Wicked" songs are in the first act, so "For Good" was never going to stack up, but it was still a satisfying conclusion for the story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) with plenty of earworms and big-budget set pieces to dazzle you into a stupor.

"For Good" picks up right after "Wicked's" dramatic conclusion, with Elphaba now in her Wicked Witch of the West era on the run from the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). Many of her old pals from Shiz now lead the mob calling for her head, though others lead the search only to find her before they do. Glinda and Elphaba clash over the Wizard's true intentions and what's best for Oz, but when a mysterious storm sends a young girl from Kansas (and her little dog too) crashing into their world, it puts their already strained relationship to the ultimate test.

'The Wild Robot' (Prime Video)

"The Wild Robot" is one of several animated movies I refuse to shut up about, so when I saw it landed on Prime Video this week, I knew I had to give it a shout-out. With Chris Sanders, the same creative tour de force behind "Lilo & Stitch" and "How to Train Your Dragon," at the wheel, you know you're in for a treat. This DreamWorks treasure had me full-on ugly crying in the theater when it came out, thanks in large part to Lupita Nyong’o’s deeply moving performance as Roz, a lost robot turned reluctant parent to an orphaned gosling (Kit Conner).

Also along for the ride is everyone's favorite zaddy, Pedro Pascal, as a fox that could give Nick Wilde a run for money. Oh, and Matt Berry makes a cameo as a beaver — I'm letting y'all know so you don't get jump scared like I was. It's your standard fish out of water tale, beautifully told with gorgeous animation that easily rivals the "Spider-Verse" films in both style and ambition.

If you've been anywhere near social media recently, you've likely seen Jimothy. The unusually round, compact raccoon took the internet by storm after Kiana Hall, a 33-year-old marketing specialist in Seattle, filmed him near the Ballard Goodwill on July 13. Hall initially thought she was looking at a cat under a parked car — until the animal turned around and revealed a racoon with short spine syndrome, a disorder that affects some animals. She posted the clip to Instagram the next day, naming him Jimothy because, as she put it, "he looked like a Jimothy."

With his seemingly missing neck and spherical shape, he looks like a creature straight out of a video game or a cryptid sighting — and as of July 18, the video had racked up over 7 million views.

Jimothy is 100% real.

How Jimothy became a cultural explosion

Before we get to what's fake, it's worth appreciating what's real — because the real-world response has been nearly as surreal as the AI-generated content.

Within days of going viral, Jimothy inspired a mural, tattoos, fan art, and a dedicated following on Reddit's r/Seattle, which saw 29 million views from July 16 to 22 alone.

The Seattle Mariners brought a Jimothy mascot into their beloved Salmon Run race at T-Mobile Park — and he won, naturally, sparking what fans are calling a rally effect after the team rattled off three straight wins.

Google even added an Easter egg. Just search his name and an animated Jimothy scampers across your screen; it's been triggered over 5 million times. He's received an honorary degree from the University of Washington, recognition from the Seattle City Council, and even a shout-out from the White House.

The AI spin

But, what's not real is almost everything you are seeing him do online.

As soon as the original clip went viral in mid-July, creatives, both human and AI took to the internet. Since Jimothy's actual appearance is already somewhat surreal, he has become the perfect subject for AI-powered content. People are running his image through generative models like Gemini's Veo and Grok to create increasingly absurd clips, placing him in fantasy landscapes, having him act out cinematic scenes or reimagining him in stylized digital art.

The gaming world has been especially enthusiastic. Blizzard Entertainment posted a tribute rendering of Jimothy in the style of "World of Warcraft." Jagex did the same for "Old School RuneScape" and D&D Beyond released an official stat block so players can drop him into their tabletop campaigns. A digital Jimothy even made an appearance in Roku City.

These AI-generated tributes are essentially a celebration of meme culture, but many of us (myself included) were duped. The internet took a genuinely fascinating wild animal and used every creative tool available, from generative AI to game engines to old-fashioned fan art, to build a cinematic universe around him.

Why we keep falling for it

The reason these artificial clips are tricking so many people because Jimothy is the perfect subject for digital deception. His real-world proportions already trigger the uncanny valley effect; when a living animal looks like a glitch in the matrix, it naturally lowers our skepticism for actual CGI.

Combine that biological reality with the way we consume content, rapidly scrolling on phones where platform video compression smooths out the telltale visual artifacts of AI generation, and it’s no wonder people are struggling to separate the real Ballard neighborhood from a prompted illusion.

So, yes, the scrappy hometown hero from Seattle is real. But if you see him riding a dragon, casting a spell or winning a raid boss fight in Azeroth, that's just the internet doing what it does best. And in this case, doing it faster and more convincingly than ever before, thanks to generative AI.

The question of "when will the iPhone Ultra actually be released" still doesn't seem to have an answer. After some back and forth over whether the first Apple foldable will be released alongside iPhone 18 Pro, another report from DigiTimes suggests that the actual release date for the foldable still remains uncertain

At this point I don't know who I should believe, and the only thing I know is that I am so tired of hearing about if and when the foldable iPhone might arrive. Especially now that Samsung has just launched a new wave of foldables, including its own passport-style Galaxy Z Fold 8 that could rival Apple's foldable ambitions.

I just wish Apple would start hustling and release this thing, because it feels like everything even remotely new gets stuck in a perpetual state of "it might arrive this year."

The current deal with the iPhone Ultra

According to previous reports, iPhone Ultra mass production began earlier this month. The final assembly is reportedly being carried out by long-time Apple collaborator Foxconn, who DigiTimes's sources claim are "the only partner likely to have a realistic chance of meeting the expected production target."

It's unclear whether that production target means the full 10 million units Apple has reportedly ordered, or simply enough to satisfy demand during the initial release window.

Foxconn is apparently in the process of "final mass-production adjustments," which has led to even more speculation that the iPhone Ultra may be delayed after all. While it's widely assumed that the phone will be unveiled alongside iPhone 18 Pro at Apple's September event, the actual release date remains unknown.

Last we heard Apple's suppliers believed everything was still on track, and the iPhone Ultra was shaping up to release alongside iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. But any hypothetical issues could alter the release schedule depending on the severity of the problem.

Past reports suggested that the hinge structure and display durability could be the real sticking points — especially with Apple pushing to release an "exceptionally refined product."

While the foldable is expected to be very expensive, with a rumored starting price around $2,500, demand is still expected to be rather high. Prolonged issues would force Apple to push back the release, to try and ensure there is enough supply to match release-day demand.

So while there's no need to panic about this right now, this back-and-forth over the fate of the iPhone Ultra is really starting to get tiresome. to the point where I'm starting to resent the fact that Apple seems to have taken so long to actually release the phone.

Just release the thing already

Maybe it's just because September's iPhone launch event is coming up fairly soon, or maybe it's just because foldable iPhone rumors have been circulating for the better part of a decade. We're at the stage now when I'm sick and tired of hearing about it, and wish Apple would hurry up and get the iPhone Ultra out into the world.

I'd even settle for an announcement and confirmation that the Ultra will actually arrive a few months later than the iPhone 18 Pro. It happened with the iPhone X back in 2017, and I feel like the knowledge that a release date is confirmed would be quite comforting — and would certainly put the majority of these rumors to bed.

The crazy thing is that this problem isn't exclusive to the iPhone Ultra. It actually seems to happen to most major Apple releases, with rumors circulating multiple years before the final product ever gets released.

The most infamous example is the Apple Car, which was in development for a decade before Apple realized it had bitten off more than it could chew. Who knew that trying to develop a fully-autonomous car from nowhere wasn't going to work out? So the project was canceled, and some of the stuff Apple learned was rolled into its ongoing work with AI and Apple Intelligence.

A similar situation to the iPhone Ultra happened with Apple Vision Pro. Rumors of an Apple VR or mixed reality headset circulated for multiple years, and I distinctly remember a lot of rumors and speculation that Apple could reveal it at the next Apple event.

We've been seeing something similar happen with Apple Glasses and the long-awaited Siri-powered smart home hub. It's not Apple's problem that these things leak so early, and we've seen it make a concerted effort to plug leaks over the years, but it makes it feel as though these new products are being developed at a snail's pace.

Bottom line

I've always argued that Apple has been a little too particular about when it releases new products. It often feels as though the company has been so hell-bent on making the "perfect" product that it's willing to drag production out for an extended period of time as it attempts to chase an impossible dream.

The botched Apple Car development and the obsession over eliminating the display crease says to me that Apple has a problem with accepting when a new product is simply "good enough."

Others would argue that Apple was wise to wait, in an attempt to make the best foldable phone possible. Studying the market, working out the issues that can be fixed, them jumping in to knock Samsung off its throne.

Considering the foldable phone market is rather small, you could argue that Apple isn't really missing out by waiting and endeavoring to make the best foldable it can — even if it takes several years.

That doesn't make the constant talk of what may or may not be happening any less exhausting, though. It's at the point that I feel Apple should really have released the iPhone Ultra three or four years ago. So, the sooner it actually makes it to Apple Store shelves, the happier I will be.

1. 'Disclosure Day' (digital)

Genre: Sci-fi thriller

What it's about: Steven Spielberg returns to the genre he helped define with an alien conspiracy thriller. Emily Blunt stars as Margaret Fairchild, a TV meteorologist who suddenly speaks an alien language during a live broadcast. She's forced on the run with cybersecurity analyst Daniel Kellner (Josh O'Connor), who has stolen classified evidence of extraterrestrial life. As the government closes in, the pair race to expose a decades-long cover-up.
Why it's worth your time: No, it's not "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" 2.0, and that's fine. Even a mid-tier Spielberg sci-fi movie is eminently entertaining, elevated by Emily Blunt's terrific performance, some jaw-dropping set pieces and John Williams' soaring score.

But as Dusty finds an unexpected groove with pickleball partner Candace (Mary Steenburgen), he's pulled into a battle over the future of the family country club.
Why it's worth your time: The premise is completely ridiculous, but this sports comedy looks ready to have fun with America's fastest-growing obsession. Johnson is a natural fit for a lovable loser, and shoutout to Andy Roddick as Dusty's longtime rival.

6. ‘72 Hours’ (Netflix)

Genre: Comedy
Runtime: 1 hour 42 minutes
What it's about: Forty-year-old executive Joe (Kevin Hart) is desperate to revive his sputtering career when a wrong-number group chat lands him an unexpected opportunity: crashing a three-day bachelor party with a pack of twentysomethings. Joe is determined to prove he's still got it during a booze-soaked, sleep-deprived weekend — whether his back agrees or not.
Why it's worth your time: Kevin Hart was basically born to have a midlife crisis and this comedy leans into that by pairing his frantic energy with a younger cast, including Marcello Hernández. It definitely does not reinvent the comedy wheel, but it fits the bill if you're looking for a "Hangover" lite.

7. ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ season 3 (AMC)

Made up of Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup and Danny McBride, among others, the crew of the colony ship Covenant is bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. However, upon meeting David (Michael Fassbender), who was a crewmember on the destroyed Prometheus ship, they quickly realize that their destination is less untouched paradise and more extraterrestrial nightmare when the planet's sinister inhabitants force the crew into a deadly fight for survival.

'Wuthering Heights'

Long before there was Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, there was Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon taking on the roles of Heathcliff and Catherine in William Wyler's legendary 1939 adaptation of the Emily Brontë novel.

Though the black-and-white romantic drama depicts only half of Brontë's Gothic classic and eliminates all of the second-generation characters (sorry kids!), it's widely acclaimed for its lush, deliciously melodramatic treatment of the source material. (For The New Yorker, John Mosher said the period film "approximates the quality of the fierce, tempestuous story with a force one might never have expected...Seldom has the tone of a great novel been so faithfully reproduced by the movie people.")

Wyler's "Wuthering Heights" went on to receive eight Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, and took home one for Gregg Toland's gorgeously moody cinematography.

'John Wick'

Keanu Reeves added yet another iconic character to his decades-spanning filmography as the titular hitman of the "John Wick" franchise, which kicked off with the 2014 action thriller directed by Chad Stahelski and spawned three sequels thus far. (A fifth "Wick" film has been confirmed by Lionsgate and is reportedly in active development with both Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski returning.)

All four "John Wick" movies are set to leave HBO Max on July 31, so now's your time to revisit the visionary action franchise, which revolves around a former hired gun who is reluctantly pulled out of retirement and thrust back into the criminal underworld and all the dark dangers therein.

Amazon's Alexa voice assistant suffered an outage today. Starting around 11:30 a.m. Pacific, more than 2,000 reports suddenly hit the outage tracking site DownDetector.

We also saw reports on Reddit with users asking if Alexa is down. My colleagues found delays in Alexa reporting announcements with Ring systems and the Alexa speakers weren't connecting. Some users on Reddit reported that newer Alexa devices were working but that older speakers were the main ones affected.

Sudden spike on Down Detector

Starting around 11:30 am Pacific, a sudden spike of over 2,000 reports suddenly hit the outage tracking site on Down Detector.

Most users just reported it was down but a couple said that their Amazon speakers weren't working.

"No response to voice commands, lots of blue lights. affecting all 3 of my smart speakers," one person wrote.

Relay between Ring and Alexa is down

My colleague John Velasco confirmed that he is getting a delay on announcements from his Ring cameras to Alexa.

"My Alexa speakers don't announce people when my Ring cameras detect them," he said.

He had a minute delay he said.

Reports dive but Alexa.com is down

On DownDetector reports have taken a nose dive with people reporting things back up.

However, I've found that Alexa.com is currently inaccessible. Is it down for you?

Multiple reports on Alexa subreddit

On the Alexa subreddit, I've seen multiple reports from Alexa users saying that the platform is down.

"My Alexa platform is unresponsive and the app interface isn't working on either my iPhone or iPad. I have performed basic troubleshooting (cold boot device and iPhone) but still unresponsive. I can ask Alexa to turn on the lights and the device lights indicate that it hears me but does not perform the task. I can also ask about the weather. Same result. Light on device acknowledging being spoken to but nothing is done. is anyone," said one post.

I have seen some people saying that the outage is only affecting their older devices but not the newer ones.

A blip

Well, it appears the outage is over. Lasting just about an hour, it's not clear what caused the Alexa platform to glitch today.

However, reports on DownDetector are at nearly zero and the systems we have access to have started to receive normal announcements.
