If you're thinking about watching "Dutton Ranch" on Paramount+ this Friday (May 15), and you're worried it won't live up to the example set by "Yellowstone," I have bad news for you ... I have never watched a full episode of "Yellowstone."

However, I have watched a lot of Taylor Sheridan in recent years, including "Landman" season 2, "The Madison" and the first four episodes of "Dutton Ranch." I can tell you that of those three, I'd pick this latest entry in the Sheridanverse ten times out of ten.

That's not to say the show is flawless. There are inarguably some performances that are stronger than others. There are also more than a few soap-worthy melodramatic moments through the first four episodes of this nine-episode first season. But there are genuinely enjoyable performances, and the main storyline that has formed through these four episodes is compelling.

Not only have I enjoyed watching "Dutton Ranch" so far, but I'm actually looking forward to watching more, especially more of Ed Harris and Annette Bening.

Ed Harris and Annette Bening elevate 'Dutton Ranch'

I don't think it's a spoiler to say that the Duttons have left Montana in "Dutton Ranch." Specifically, John Dutton's daughter, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), and her husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) have left their old home for a new life in Texas.

But once they arrive at the small town of Rio Paloma, they find not all the locals are friendly to newcomers. One family of locals, the Jacksons, is particularly unwelcoming ... in no small part because they practically own the town.

The Jackson family matriarch, Beulah (Annette Bening), and Beth manage to get into conflict as rival ranchers almost immediately, unaware that Rip has just punched Beulah's drunken son at a local gas station. It's setting up a real Hatfields and McCoys situation, which I won't be complaining about because that means we get more Annette Bening as a business feud potentially turns into something more personal.

To be fair, I like Reilly's portrayal of Beth as the new head of the Duttons' business operations. Of the three Duttons in "Dutton Ranch," her performance is by far my favorite; unfortunately, I find Finn Little to be a weak link as Beth and Rip's son, Carter, and I worry Rip is a supporting character thrust into a lead role. But Bening is one of the few people in this show who steal every scene they're in.

The other one to steal the scene, and perhaps the show? Ed Harris. He plays Everett McKinney, a Vietnam veteran who is the Rio Paloma veterinarian now that his Navy days are behind him. He quickly befriends Beth, almost certainly aligning him with Team Dutton against Beulah and the Jacksons. But he and Beulah clearly have a history, and that could complicate things as he gets closer to the Dutton operation. Luckily, Harris is good in everything he acts in, so I won't be complaining if his supporting role in this show expands.

Verdict: 'Dutton Ranch' is a must-watch for fans of 'Yellowstone'

Look, if I'm being honest, there's no universe in which this show makes my shortlist for the best shows of the year. It's not Emmy material. There are some weak performances combined with soap opera storylines that give me a good excuse to check my emails (not that I ever look away when reviewing a show).

But, I do like "Dutton Ranch." While there are weaker performances, Reilly, Bening and Harris will keep me watching through the end of season 1, at least. And the interfamily conflict that's brewing in this tight-knit Texas town already has me hooked.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention that the social commentary in this show is far superior to what we've gotten from Sheridan in recent years ... which might be because Sheridan isn't actually involved in this show (he's an executive producer, but Chad Feehan is the showrunner). Frankly, there isn't a ton of social commentary about what's wrong in America, which has been a hallmark of Sheridan's writing in recent years. And what little there is feels surprisingly natural. You rarely bat an eye at it.

So if you're a "Yellowstone" fan still waiting for more from the Duttons, and "Marshals" left you unsatisfied, I'm confident that "Dutton Ranch" will fill the Montana-sized hole in your Texas-sized heart. Shortly before Taylor Sheridan launched the “Yellowstone” empire, he wrote a trio of movies known as the “American Frontier Trilogy.” These aren’t spaghetti Westerns, or even narratively connected, but they each take part in the modern American West and explore dark corners of the human experience, with gripping narratives and compelling characters.

The trilogy starter, “Sicario,” and capper, “Wind River,” both got their flowers, and I see them frequently feature on “best movies of the 2010s” lists. But the middle chapter, “Hell or High Water,” was much praised upon release — with the film garnering a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The viewer score is not far behind, htting 88%k, but it lhas fallen out of the general movie conversation. That’s a great shame because in my mind it’s the best of the three. Fortunately, it’s just arrived on Netflix this week, offering a fresh chance in the spotlight.

If you’re a fan of Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” universe, or just a Netflix subscriber looking for a highly engaging crime thriller to watch this weekend, “Hell or High Water” should be your first choice. After all, there’s a reason it was nominated for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture.

What is ‘Hell or High Water’ about?

Set in rural West Texas, Toby (Chris Pine) and his brother Tanner (Ben Foster) are bank robbers who believe their criminal spree is justified. Following the death of their mother from a long illness, their ranch has been left in deep debt due to a mortgage from Texas Midlands Bank.

Toby is the planner of the two and is eager to make a better life for his estranged wife and sons. Meanwhile, Tanner is a wild card, liable to lose his temper and take unnecessary risks. As the bank moves to foreclose on their property, they become desperate for money to clear their debt.

On their tail is Marcus (Jeff Bridges), a dedicated Texas Ranger, who is only weeks away from retirement. As the law catches up with the Howard brothers, they plot one final robbery, but all roads lead to a showdown between the two sides, and not everybody will come out of it alive.

Here’s why you need to stream ‘Hell or High Water’ on Netflix

“Hell or High Water” swims in moral ambiguity. It’s not often you feel sympathy for the criminals, but Toby and Tanner’s plight is tough to stomach.

Their ill mother was sold a mortgage that would ensure the bank eventually takes the family's land, and the fact that oil has been discovered on the property only makes the situation all the more thorny. In many ways, the brothers’ bank robberies are framed as an act of true justice.

Of course, things aren’t quite so binary in “Hell or High Water,” and Jeff Bridges’ Marcus represents the other side of the coin. The dedicated lawman is trying to keep the order. He’s not cast as a villain. This makes the cat-and-mouse game all the more engaging. As a viewer, you’re never quite sure which side you want to “win” by the time the credits roll.

Strong writing from Taylor Sheridan, sharp direction from David Mackenzie, and excellent performances from its core trio, Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster, all combine to make an exceptional thriller. Oh, and I can't forget to praise the truly stunning cinematography as well.

Those looking for themetic depth will find it, but if you want an intense crime drama with a grounded tone and excellent suspense, you’ve got it in spades in “Hell or High Water.” It’s a thoughtful and very watchable thriller.

Don't ju “Critics Consensus” reads, “Hell or High Water offers a solidly crafted, well-acted Western heist thriller that eschews mindless gunplay in favor of confident pacing and full-bodied characters.”

“Hell or High Water” is actually the highest rated movie in the aforementioned trilogy, which is quite an achievement, as both “Sicario” and “Wind River” are also phenomenal movies. To stand out among such strong fellows, speak only to “Hell or High Water’s” undeniable quality.

The "Yellowstone" television universe is almost as vast and sweeping as the national park that shares its name, with prequel series like "1883" and "1923" Continuing the story of the Dutton family across generations. What is 'Longmire' about?

At the center of this contemporary crime thriller is Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor), the sheriff of Wyoming's fictional Absaroka County, who doggedly patrols the region's mountainous terrain and the local community, all the while trying to overcome the deep grief of his wife's recent death.

Both professionally and personally, Walt finds much-needed assistant from fellow sheriff and longtime friend Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips), his new deputy Vic Moretti (Katee Sackhoff) — a transplanted Philadelphia homicide detective with whom Walt shares simmering romantic tension — and his attorney daughter Cady (Cassidy Freeman), with whom he shares an emotionally distant relationship after her mother's passing.

As Walt and Co. work to solve crimes, they also must contend with the jurisdictional and cultural tensions between their own country and the bordering Cheyenne Indian Reservation, which has its own police force.

Why you should watch 'Longmire'

Running for six seasons and 63 episodes, "Longmire" actually ran for longer than "Yellowstone" and while both candidly deal with the communities, corruptions and conflicts of the American West, the former feels slightly more grounded and lived in than that more over-the-top Sheridan juggernaut, with a strong sense of place, sturdy story construction and small-scale mysteries that feel like they could play out in the real world.

That restrained realism was widely praised by critics: "'Longmire' arrives as silently as a dust devil kicked up by a high wind on the Wyoming plains," Newsday's Verne Gay wrote of the Western drama. "With little in the way of fanfare and a lead actor unacquainted with household name status, it must instead rely on a quiet fortitude, much like its namesake." He added: "Unassuming 'Longmire' doesn't shout 'Love Me!' but instead works its charms subtly, quietly."

The pros and cons of Paramount Plus

I think it’s pretty clear that where Paramount Plus shines brightest is in the binge-watching department. It’s the streaming home of the “Yellowstone” spinoffs, which will keep you watching for a while.

Afterwards, you can dip into buzzy originals like “Tulsa King,” “Mobland” and “Landman." Plus, if you have a Premium account ($12.99 per month), you’ll also get access to Showtime’s library, which includes the complete “Dexter” saga and guilty pleasure thriller “Yellowjackets."

For me, the biggest draw of Paramount Plus’ TV show library comes is summed up in two words: “South Park.” Yup, the (in)famous animated series was a real favorite of mine in my teenage years, and ever since getting access to a Paramount Plus account, I’ve been diving back into some classic episodes. The newest episodes are there as well, so there’s more than enough “South Park” to keep me busy for months to come.

Though, to be honest, I’m more of a movie person, and it’s perhaps here that Paramount Plus comes up a little short. There are some familiar blockbuster series like “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Transformers,” alongside some new movies like “Vicious” and “Novocaine,” but it’s not exactly a library overflowing with noteworthy options. There’s also only a thin selection of Paramount Plus Original movies; mostly, it’s a library of familiar features from yesteryear.

So, unless you’re super desperate to rewatch the “Jackass” collection or have an odd fondness for "Bay-former," you can get through the movie library highlights in just a few weekend marathons. Paramount Plus definitely feels like a service that puts binge-watchers first, not cinephiles like me.

Should you get Paramount Plus in 2025?

I’m still working my way through my Paramount Plus watchlist. There’s plenty of worthwhile content here, so a single week with the service wasn’t going to be enough time to consume everything that’s caught my eye. However, at this stage, I’m generally impressed with what I’ve seen. On the TV show side of the platform, at least, the movie library is more limited.

If you’re the type of person who prefers to focus on a single streaming service, then I don’t think I could recommend Paramount Plus as your one and only. Particularly, when the drip feed of new content is slower than Netflix or Prime Video. However, if you have the monthly budget to subscribe to multiple platforms at once, it makes for a great supplementary service.

That’s where I see Paramount Plus sitting in my streaming setup. It’s never going to be the one platform that I turn to most frequently, but when another “Dexter” spin-off/reboot arrives (my partner is completely obsessed with all things “Dexter”), or I’m eager for some teen nostalgia with a classic “South Park” adventure, I’ll be glad to have Paramount Plus to hand.

Fans of "Yellowstone" have plenty to look forward to in Taylor Sheridan’s ever-expanding TV universe. Paramount has announced a slew of additional cast members for the upcoming "Y: Marshals," the latest spinoff of "Yellowstone."

The CBS drama will bring back some very familiar faces from the original series while also introducing a slate of fresh characters that promise to shake up the story. In total, seven new cast members have been added alongside three returning stars.

With production underway, "Y: Marshals" is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated shows in the Sheridan-verse. Here’s everything we know so far about the cast and what to expect from the new series.

Who's joining the 'Y: Marshals' cast?

Three former "Yellowstone" cast members are reprising their roles in "Y: Marshals," faces you'll undoubtedly recognize: Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater, Mo Brings Plenty as Mo, and Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton. They join series lead Luke Grimes, who will be continuing Kayce Dutton’s story as the center of this new CBS procedural.

From there, the series is rounding out its core team with several new additions. Arielle Kebbel is starring as Belle, Ash Santos is Andrea, and Tatanka Means plays Miles, all fellow members of the U.S. Marshals unit. Brett Cullen will play Harry Gifford, the head of the marshals in Montana, while previously announced co-star Logan Marshall-Green will fill the role of Pete Calvin, a friend from Kayce’s military days.

What is 'Y: Marshals' about?

This "Yellowstone" spinoff continues Kayce Dutton's story by putting his ranching days behind him. He leaves Yellowstone Ranch to join an elite U.S. Marshals unit in Montana, which will put both his cowboy background and Navy SEAL experience to the test.

Per the official show logline, Kayce and his team will work to juggle family, their duties as Marshals, and the mental and emotional cost of being a last line of defense for some very difficult cases. The series is set to debut in early 2026 with a 13-episode order.

There are several other "Yellowstone" spinoffs coming down the pipeline as well if you can't wait to see this one, and multiple others that have already been airing: "1944," "The Madison," and "The Dutton Ranch," all of which will continue or explore the Duttons' history before, during, and after the events of "Yellowstone".

"Yellowstone" prequel "1923" is set for an epic, double-length season 2 finale this weekend.

Per TV Insider, we know that "1923's" sophomore season will conclude with an explosive finale that will run for nearly two hours when it airs on Paramount Plus on Sunday, April 6.

A precise runtime hasn't been revealed, though the site described the finale, which is titled "A Dream and a Memory" — as "a longer episode released all at once".

How this feature-length finale, "A Dream and a Memory" is meant to follow "1923" season 2's penultimate episode, "The Mountain Teeth of Monsters", remains to be seen.

Given everything that happened in that recent episode, though — spoilers imminent — we're doubtless in for a major finale.

Season 2's sixth episode saw no fewer than seven characters meet their end, including the loss of Jack Dutton (Darren Mann). Revenge and justice are sure to follow soon, right?

Not much has been revealed just yet, beyond a short episode logline. It reads: "Jacob [Harrison Ford] and his crew eagerly await Spencer's [Brandon Sklenar] return at the train station. Teonna has a fateful run in. Alexandra braves the cold."

Aside from the death of Jack Dutton, the penultimate episode also saw the deaths of Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché), Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane), Pete Plenty Clouds (Cole Brings Plenty), Runs His Horse (Michael Spears), and British socialites, Paul (Augustus Prew) and Hillary (Janet Montgomery).

Are we getting '1923' season 3?

Right now, we don't have an answer. It's previously been reported that Taylor Sheridan pitched the show as a two-season story.

However, Paramount hasn't officially confirmed whether "A Dream and a Memory" will bring "1923" to an end. Could the door be open for more? That might well depend on how this finale plays out.

Star Helen Mirren previously told THR that she'd be open to returning, adding: "Well, if any other job came my way where I got to work with Harrison, I would say yes in a nanosecond. If it happens to be an extension of this story, absolutely. As long as Harrison is in it, I’ll be there.

Even if this is it for "1923", there's still more from Sheridan on the horizon, as spinoffs "The Madison" and "1944" have both been announced, plus there's been chatter about another series led by Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser).

If you've been waiting for the (potentially) final chapter of "Yellowstone" to come to Peacock, we've got some good news: NBC has confirmed that "Yellowstone" season 5 part 2 is coming to Peacock soon.

Yes, Taylor Sheridan fans will be able to stream "Yellowstone" season 5 part 2 on Peacock from Sunday, March 16, allowing Peacock customers the ability to see what's still in store for the Duttons if they weren't watching when season 5 part 2 debuted back in November 2024.

Was 'Yellowstone' season 5 the show's last?

While the "Yellowstone" franchise is still going strong in spinoffs (more on that in a second), plenty of viewers are wondering whether the "Yellowstone" story is truly over.

Well, we're not entirely sure, at present. Season 5 was previously advertised as the show's final season, and of course, it lost its big star, Kevin Costner, who went off to make "Horizon: An American Saga".

However, in the summer of 2024, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser (Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, respectively) were in talks for a sixth season of the original series. In Dec. 2024, Deadline instead reported they'd closed deals to star in "the first spinoff to carry "Yellowstone" in the title", per their report.

More recently though, fellow star Forrie J. Smith painted a slightly different picture in January of this year. In a video he shared with his Instagram followers at the start of 2025, he said: "Hey "Yellowstone" addicts, I would stay together... Taylor Sheridan, he ain't said it's over".

Was that a cryptic hint that Sheridan might be returning to "Yellowstone" itself, after all? It seems like we'll be waiting for a 100% definitive answer from Paramount or Sheridan himself until we know for sure.

Even if the original show's over for good, Sheridan fans still have plenty to look forward to. "1923", is returning to Paramount Plus for its second season on Feb. 23, and sequel spinoff "The Madison" has a stellar cast lined up for its "heartfelt study of grief and human connection" (per Variety), one which includes Michelle Pfeiffer, "Suits" fave Patrick J. Adams and Matthew Fox.

Throw in other rumored spinoffs that may or may not be in development — one about the 6666 ranch (via Deadline) and another set in 1944 — and Sheridan's other work ("Landman", "Mayor of Kingstown") and we've got plenty more coming our way, whether "Yellowstone" proper is gone for good or not.

The "Yellowstone" season 5 part 2 premiere comes this Sunday, but we're still getting some final hints about what to expect in the dramatic conclusion to the hit Paramount Network show.

One thing that's been addressed more than once is Kevin Costner's disappearance from the show. The show's star left during the break between season 5 part 1 and the upcoming part 2, and people have been wondering how show creator Taylor Sheridan would handle it.

Now, one of the show's most prolific directors is speaking out on the topic. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Christina Voros revealed that, yes, Costner will still be a part of "Yellowstone" and its final episodes.

"His presence is integral. I think to say any more than that would potentially compromise all the work that went into redacting the scripts! (Laughs) But I think the reason people are wondering, “Is he, isn’t he? Where is he, where is he not?” is because he is the patriarch and his presence is an essential component to the story. John Dutton is still central."

So no, you're not crazy when you keep seeing Kevin Costner pop up in all these "Yellowstone" teasers and trailers. He's definitely going to be a key part of the show between the season 5 part 2 premiere and the show's finale five episodes later. Even if he doesn't physically appear in every episode.

'Yellowstone' season 5 part 2 premieres this Sunday

We now have a decent idea of what to expect in the final episodes of "Yellowstone." Kelly Reilly's recent comments tell us that her character Beth just wants to be with her husband Rip (Cole Hauser), even to the point where she'd give it all up to just be with him on a "piece of land that nobody wants."

But we also know that Rip has no intention of walking away quietly. Cole Hauser has said Rip will be intimately involved in some of the show's impending violence, saying "You’ll have to wait. Listen, Rip does a lot of the killing. I’ll tell you that."

We definitely expect there to be a lot of killing based on the show's season 5 part 2 trailer. Rip at least seems to push a man down a cliff or ravine, and another man is seen running across the rolling hills while on fire, so we should expect at least those deaths in the show's final episodes.

As "Yellowstone" season 5 part 2 approaches, more and more stars are revealing details about what could happen in the finale of Paramount's hit Western show.

Last week, it was Kelly Reilly, the actress who plays John Dutton's daughter Beth on the show, who revealed what could be in store for her character in the show's final episodes. Now, her show husband Cole Hauser, who plays Beth's husband, Rip Wheeler, is giving us some food for thought about the ending of "Yellowstone."

Speaking to Parade in a recent interview, Hauser was asked about some fan theories on the internet that have things ending badly for Rip. Hauser didn't fully reveal one way or the other if Rip survives the final episodes of season 5 part 2, but he did reveal that Rip partakes in this season's impending violence. "You’ll have to wait. Listen, Rip does a lot of the killing. I’ll tell you that."

However, when speaking with Today, Hauser did get a bit more committal. When asked a similar question to the one posited by Parade, Hauser said "My mom’s told me a couple of them and I said, ‘Mom, I do the killing. Don’t worry about it.'" When further pressed if Rip would be gone by the end of the season, Hauser said "I think we’re OK. For now."

All signs point to a violent ending for 'Yellowstone'

We've expected a violent season 5 part 2 finale ever since we saw the season 5 part 2 trailer. That trailer showed one man on fire running through the picturesque western U.S. landscape, and another being seemingly pushed to his death by none other than Rip Wheeler.

But based on Hauser's comments, it seems pretty likely that we can bet on Rip's final body count for these final episodes to surpass just that one. The man on fire I just mentioned? Could it be that he ran from the car that Rip and Lloyd Pierce (Forrie J. Smith) set on fire and left it to burn in the trailer? Based on when the scenes seem to take place it's unlikely, but not impossible.

It is likely though, that Rip won't be the only one doing some killing this season. In the trailer, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), Beth's brother, seemingly exits a vehicle with a gun. We know Jamie is capable of killing and we know he wants Beth dead. Does he succeed? Or does he become another statistic in Rip's kill count for the show? Or maybe it's Beth that gets the last word. After all, she ends the trailer saying "The only thing left to do is to kill as much as you can before they kill you."

If you want to know for sure how "Yellowstone" ends, you'll have to watch the final episodes. The season 5 part 2 premiere debuts on Paramount Network on November 10, though you'll be able to watch the premiere episodes on CBS just mere hours later as well. "Yellowstone" season 5 part 2 is almost here, and mere days ahead of the season premiere, one of its stars just made some very interesting comments.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly back in September, "Yellowstone" star Kelly Reilly, who plays John Dutton's daughter Beth, revealed how the upcoming episodes start for her character.

"'We start the show where Rip's [Beth's husband] gone to Texas and Beth is miserable without him. Within 24 hours, she's like, ‘When are you coming back?’ She doesn't have much patience or understanding that he has to go and do cowboying, so she might take a trip down to Texas to see him.'"

But despite this drama, Reilly recently told Entertainment Weekly that Beth and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) are "great."

In fact, things with them might be so great that Beth might be ready to ride off into the sunset with her man. "'What she wants is a very simple, quiet life on a piece of land that nobody wants and just to be with him. It's unlike anything you would've imagined this woman wanted, but actually, that's who she is.'"

Recent 'Yellowstone' trailer suggests Beth won't get her happy ending

After reading those comments, my first reaction was a burning question — "Is Beth going to get her happy ending?" Based on the season 5 part 2 trailer it sure seems like this season is going to be a violent one, and her husband Rip might be the one kicking things off.

At the 17-second mark of the trailer, a man who appears to be Rip pushes someone off a cliff, seemingly to their death. The trailer also has Rip and Lloyd Pierce (Forrie J. Smith) talking about gearing up for a fight, and later the pair even set a car on fire and leave it to burn. Is there a body in that car? Maybe, maybe not, but they're surely hiding something.

Even if Rip ultimately makes it through the finale unscathed, he's not the only obstacle in the way of Beth's happy ending. In the trailer, we also get Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), Beth's brother, seemingly exiting a vehicle with a gun. We know from previous seasons that Jamie is capable of killing and may already be plotting Beth's death, so that is certainly an ominous sight for anyone rooting for Beth and Rip.

The only way we'll know the answer for sure though is to watch the final episodes, which start with the season 5 part 2 premiere on Paramount Network on November 10. "Yellowstone" season 5 part 2 is mere weeks away. But now we have a official trailer for the end of Paramount's hit Western drama show and it definitely doesn't skimp on the drama.

In the trailer's description on YouTube, the show says "Generations of blood have led to this" and there's definitely some blood in the trailer, including what appears to be Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) swearing a blood oath to each other at around the 30-second mark.

But the trailer also hints at more than at least one death. A man who appears to be Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) pushes someone off a cliff at the 17-second mark, seemingly to their death. A few seconds later we get Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) seemingly exiting a vehicle with a gun, and we know from previous seasons that Jamie is capable of killing and may already be plotting the death of his sister Beth (Kelly Reilly).

That'd already be plenty of death for a mere six episodes but the trailer hints at even more. The members of the Broken Rock Reservation seem to be gearing up for a fight — possibly with Wheeler and Lloyd Pierce (Forrie J. Smith) or possibly against them. The trailer leaves that intentionally ambiguous, but what isn't ambiguous is that the duo just a few moments later set a car on fire and leave it to burn, possibly implying another possible death.

For those keeping score at home that's almost certainly one death coming before the series ends this fall, and probably a few others. And that's not even counting the unidentified figures having guns pointed at them throughout the 1:24-minute-long trailer and another unidentified figure running across the Montanan landscape while set ablaze. As Beth Dutton says to end the trailer, "The only thing left to do is to kill as much as you can before they kill you."

If that's not foreshadowing, I don't know what is.

A few months ago, I snagged a Peacock deal, mainly because it meant I've be able to binge all of the Olympics content, as well as catch the Eagles and Packers game in Brazil. 

But, the deal has brought unexpected dividends, in that I've also been able to rewatch two shows that are all about family. No, I'm not talking about the "Fast and Furious" franchise. I'm talking about "Downton Abbey" and "Yellowstone." I started rewatching the latter in anticipation of Yellowstone season 5 part 2, which returns this November, and I picked up the former following the passing of Maggie Smith. 

At first glance, there doesn't seem to be much in common with a modern-day Montana ranch and an Edwardian era English estate, aside from the fact that there's a lot of horse riding.

But peel back the leather chaps and petticoats, and you'll find that there are some broader themes that thread their way through both series. Here's five ways that "Yellowstone" and "Downton Abbey" are more alike than you think.

Heir and parent

The very first episode of "Downton Abbey" starts with news of the sinking of the Titanic — and along with it, the two presumptive heirs of the titular estate. Times being what they were, the property can't go to one of Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville)'s three daughters, so the search begins for a suitable suitor who could marry the eldest to ensure the survival of the estate.

In a similar, but more bloody fashion — as is the mien for "Yellowstone" — the eldest son of John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is shot and killed in the first episode, leaving the patriarch to have to figure out which of his remaining three children (two sons and a daughter) are best suited for the task of running the ranch. The only one who seems the best fit is also the one who's the most reluctant. It's not quite King Lear, but it's close. 

Tradition vs. modernity

While they take place a century apart, both the "Yellowstone" and "Downton" estates have been around for hundreds of years in their respective shows; the Dutton ranch was established in 1883, while Downton itself — which has been in existence since the 1500s — assumes its final form in the 1840s.

Both John Dutton and the Earl have a strong sense of tradition and "the way things are done," sometimes to the detriment of their estates, and have to be dragged into the future by their more forward-thinking scions. 

However, both series tend to romanticize the older way of doing things, as many of the older characters on the English show wax nostalgic about the simpler times and shake their heads at such newfangled inventions like the telephone and radio. Over in Montana, John Dutton is constantly trying to find places on his ranch that don't get cell service.

Upstairs/downstairs

Another commonality in both series is the different worlds inhabited by the family and the people who work for them. While less pronounced in "Yellowstone" — class divisions just aren't what they used to be — there's definitely a divide between the beer-chugging cowboys in the bunkhouse and the Dutton's dining situation, where they have their own private chef.

With the exception of Rip, the number of times you see a ranchhand in the main lodge, or a family member in the bunkhouse, are few and far between. Likewise, the number of times one of the Granthams shows up in the servant's dining room could be counted on one glove-covered hand.

Both series also see one of the staff fall in love with — and marry — one of the daughters. In "Yellowstone," Rip, the ranch foreman, ends up with Beth, while on "Downton," the chauffeur Tom Branson (Allen Leech) weds Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay). It's more of a shock on "Downton," to be sure, but in both cases, it's a big crossing of socioeconomic lines.

It's all about money

The simple cost of running a massive estate is also one of the biggest issues that face both families. One of the reasons the Earl of Grantham chose an American for his wife is because her family's sizable fortune has allowed Downton to stay afloat, yet money troubles are always lurking in the background. 

The Dutton ranch — over 500,000 acres — seems to be continually besieged by outside developers who want to acquire most, or part of it, in order to build casinos, airports, or some other sort of development. And, the sale of cattle, which seems to be the Duttons' only source of income, isn't as beefy as it used to be. 

Interestingly, in both series, the more forward-thinking kids are able to diversify their estates' portfolios by renting out the grounds, be it for film crews or wedding receptions. After all, that's one more thing both these places have in common: Amazing views.

Big Daddy

And, at the center of both series is the family patriarch: John Dutton in "Yellowstone" and Lord Grantham in "Downton Abbey." This isn't a huge surprise, owing to the quasi-historical roots of both shows, but it's a commonality just the same. However, that's all changing with Yellowstone season 5 part 2 — the first episode airs November 10 — as Costner is not returning to the show. 

So, if you're a fan of "Yellowstone," it might be worth giving the more genteel world of "Downton" a chance, and if you're a devotee of the latter, take a trip out West and you may find there's more to like than you might have imagined. Just be prepared for a lot more cussin' and fightin'.

"Yellowstone" season 5 part 2 is just a few months away, but there had been some hope that this wasn't the end for the Duttons on the hit Paramount Network show. Unfortunately, an interview with one of the show's major stars probably put any hope for a "Yellowstone" season 6 on ice.

In an interview with Us Weekly, Cole Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler, a member of the Dutton family by marriage, essentially confirmed that this is the end for "Yellowstone." While promoting his coffee company Free Rein's launch at Walmart, he said, “It’s been a great ride with everyone involved” when asked to reflect on his last day on set for season 5 part 2.

Of course, just because it's been a great ride doesn't mean it can't still be a great ride going forward. However, when Hauser said, "You’ll have to stay tuned for November for how Taylor [Sheridan] wraps it up!” he all but confirmed that these episodes will be the show's last.

This will definitely be sad news for some "Yellowstone" fans. A late August report from Variety indicated that Hauser and his co-star Kelly Reilly, who plays his wife Beth Dutton in the show, were in talks to sign on for a surprise season 6. But with Hauser now looking forward to his next projects — with or without show creator Taylor Sheridan — it seems that those talks have ceased if they had even happened in the first place.

'Yellowstone' isn't the end for the Dutton family

While it now seems all but certain the Dutton family's time on "Yellowstone" will come to an end at the end of season 5 — show star Kevin Costner won't even be back for these final episodes as family patriarch John Dutton — it won't be the end of the family's involvement in the greater Sheridanverse.

There are already several spin-offs of the show involving the fictional family. A new season is currently planned for the prequel series "1923" and additional spin-offs "1944" (another prequel) and "6666" (set on the nearby 6666 Ranch) have been announced.

There's also a potential sequel called "The Madison." It already has several cast members, including Matthew Fox, Michelle Pfeiffer and Patrick J. Adams. While this show is set in the same universe as "Yellowstone," it's unclear if it will involve the Duttons.

Finally, there's the rumored "2024." This show was planned as a sequel to "Yellowstone," continuing the series with Matthew McConaughey as a new lead character. But an official casting announcement was never made and it's possible "2024" has been replaced with "The Madison."

The wait for more episodes of "Yellowstone" is nearly over. In a short teaser, Paramount Network announced that the final episodes of the Taylor Sheridan-created drama would begin airing on November 10 at 8 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. CT.

Technically, the last handful of episodes make up the second part of "Yellowstone" Season 5, the first half of which concluded on January 1, 2023. However, the wait has been so long, that one is almost inclined to consider the upcoming episodes an entirely new season.

The show will return without lead Kevin Costner, who stepped away to film his latest epic "Horizon" amid rumors of a protracted dispute with Sheridan. In April, Costner mentioned that he would "love to return" to "Yellowstone," but there's no indication that he is actually making an appearance, despite the cliffhanger that the first half of Season 5 left John Dutton in.

Currently in production, the final six episodes were also partly delayed by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes that started last summer. The second half of "Yellowstone" Season 5 was supposed to premiere in November 2023. 

Prequels, sequels and more "Yellowstone"

Even the final episode of Season 5 won't mean the end of "Yellowstone." Paramount Network already has two prequel spinoffs — "1833" and "1923" — that run on Paramount Plus.

Paramount is also working on other spinoffs, starting with "1944," which is supposedly filming right now and may act as a sequel to "1923."

The other show would be a sequel called "2024," which is rumored to feature Matthew McConaughey and Michelle Pfieffer. Current characters Beth, Rip and Kayce, played by Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser and Luke Grimes, respectively, are reportedly going to be in "2024," as well, though there are rumors that that trio have their own salary demand tensions.

The "Four Sixes or 6666" is yet another series in the works that is also a prequel to "Yellowstone" and is about the Four Sixes Ranch, a real place in Texas. This show will take place in the present day and represents a way to move away from the Dutton ranch.

Details are scant on that one, though, and it may not be any closer to production than the few rumors we've heard so far.

With several Aussie productions lined up for release this year, including the Matildas' documentary, Trailblazers, and another new season of RuPaul's Drag Race, sticking with Stan may be worth your while.

Admittedly, many of its other streaming exclusives could be considered rather B-tier compared to the likes of Disney+, Paramount+, and, of course, Netflix — and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Still, you may be wondering whether Stan is worth maintaining an ongoing subscription to.

Stan Australia plans and prices

Stan currently offers three monthly subscriptions and one add-on to new and existing customers:

Stan previously gave new customers a 30-day free trial to any of its subscription tiers, which could be cancelled at any time. Unfortunately, Stan has cut this free trial period.

Stan is one of the few streaming services available that does not include any ads in any of its plans, which is a big win in my book. Across all three plans, you can access the platform’s entire library of TV shows, movies and more.

In 2025, Stan secretly raised the price of its Basic tier to AU$12 p/m — an AU$2 increase from its previous price of AU$10 p/m.

Basic — AU$12 p/m

Coming in at AU$12 p/m, Stan's Basic plan allows you to watch SD resolution on one screen at a time. You can only download content on one device as well.

Standard — AU$17 p/m
With a Standard plan, Stan allows you to stream on three devices simultaneously in HD resolution. You can download content across three devices for offline viewing.

Premium — AU$22 p/m
Stan's Premium plan offers 4K viewing on four screens at the same time, priced at AU$22p/m. Additionally, you can download content across five different devices. Much like the Stan standard plan, this plan comes in at a higher price point compared to premium plans on other streaming services.

Stan Sport — AU$20 + base subscription
This AU$20 p/m add-on could be worth the investment for sports fanatics. Stan offers you ad-free viewing of live and on-demand sports. Again, this is an optional add-on, so it could be worth it if you're heavily involved during the busy sporting seasons of the year.

How to pick the right plan for your needs

For a majority of streaming services — Stan included — plan prices tend to revolve around the number of screens and streaming resolution on offer. Obviously, other factors may go into this, like catalogue access and non-streaming benefits, but for the most part, it comes down to this: more screens = higher subscription costs.

Stan’s plans are similar in theory. They offer you full access to the platform’s entire content library and you can cancel your subscription at any time, regardless of what monthly plan you sign up for.

However, every plan offers a different streaming resolution and number of screens, which means the lower the price, the lower the resolution/screens. Quality-wise, basic plan users can only stream in SD (are we living in the Dark Ages?), standard plan users can stream in the increasingly common HD and premium users can stream in HD and 4K. It’s something to note because other competitors may offer lower prices but higher resolution for a similar or more expansive content catalogue (i.e., Netflix’s ad-supported plan streams in HD or Prime Video’s monthly sub which includes some Ultra HD 4K content for no extra charge).

If you’re in a smaller household, with one or two screens (for example, a smart TV or phone), a basic Stan plan would be more than enough. It also depends on your budget. Stan’s plans cater to different budgets, but if you’re signing up to Stan for the Sports add-on, then it may be best to sign up for the lowest plan so your monthly spend isn’t too extreme.

If you’re in a larger household with multiple devices or multiple users with different interests, Stan recommends a premium plan. Users with high-end televisions may also want to opt for this simply to make their telly purchase worth it.

Are there ways to save on subscription costs?

There are currently no offers or third-party providers that allow you to save on a Stan subscription. We will keep this page updated if any do become available.

How does Stan's pricing compare to other streaming services?

Stan's subscription costs are average amongst all streaming services in Australia and are pretty much on par with those charged by Netflix. When compared to Netflix's Standard offering, Stan's standard plan is pretty similar and skims AU$3 off Netflix's monthly cost. If you include the sports add-on, though, you’re looking at AU$25p/m at minimum, which absolutely skyrockets Stan’s prices.

Stan's basic tier is the highest among the three streamers who offer it, costing AU$2 more than the AU$10.39p/m average. In terms of its premium price, Stan is again, among the most expensive options at AU$22p/m, costing a whole AU$1.01 more than the average of AU$20.99p/m.

How does Stan's content catalogue compare?

In terms of content, Stan ranks above the other Aussie streaming hub, Binge, with 2,492 titles. Stan's library comprises 1,882 movies and 610 television shows. When compared to larger streamers, though, Stan's catalogue isn't as comprehensive as Netflix's 7,648 titles or Disney+'s 3,268 accolades.

Stan’s exclusives like smash-hit American western Yellowstone, dark comedy Wolf Like Me starring Isla Fisher and Josh Gad, and Better Call Saul — the show that kick-started it all — are absolute must-watches on the platform.

The platform’s movie library is pretty great too, with many new and classic films to watch. There’s also a growing number of Stan-produced feature films on offer, like Nitram, a psychological drama and True History of the Kelly Gang, which is, you guessed it, based on the adventures of Ned Kelly and co.

Stan also offers a mammoth selection of Stan Originals content, with an almost unrivalled lineup of Aussie-based productions. These include Bump, which centres around an ambitious 16-year-old who unexpectedly gives birth, Wolf Creek, a chilling spin-off to the horror movie duo and Bali 2002, a docudrama surrounding the 20th anniversary of the Bali attacks.

Notably (and largely the reason I subscribe), Stan is home to RuPaul’s Drag Race and its many spin-offs, including the newest seasons of Drag Race Down Under. Now, some may see it as appointment TV, but for those of us obsessed with sequins, glitter and lip sync battles, RuPaul has it all.

It would be remiss of us not to mention the large variety of sports that the Stan Sports add-on has to offer. Stan Sports has something for everyone. Stan Sport is home to all tennis comps, like the Australian Open, Grand Slam and Wimbledon. It also features rugby, the UEFA Champions League, motorsports, cycling and equestrian, just to name a few.

Recent Stan releases include the second seasons of Amandaland and A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. In June, Stan welcomes a new murder mystery, The Killings at Parrish Station and new original film, Beast.

Has Stan's price increased over time?

Price-wise, the basic plan's AU$10 monthly cost has stayed consistent since 2016 until recently when the streamer introduced a sneaky AU$2 price hike. Both its standard and premium plans have seen price hikes in the last nine years.

The standard plan saw a slight increase of AU$3 from AU$14 to now AU$17p/m and its premium plan has increased by AU$7 to AU$22p/m.

Is a Stan subscription worth it?

If you’ve gotten this far, and you’re still questioning if a Stan subscription is worth it for you, here’s what we suggest.

While there’s lots of great content on Stan, you may be better off reactivating your account when fast-tracked must-watch shows are set for release. If you’re thinking of signing up for Stan, then we’d recommend trying out the basic plan. Since the free trial period has been indefinitely cut, you may find it isn't worth your time or money after your first payment cycle.

Considering Stan’s subscription costs are similar to Netflix’s offerings, we’d argue that Netflix has a stronger content catalogue. Stan is loyal to its homegrown content though, so if you want more Australian-based productions, then Stan is a great choice.

There’s no shortage of Yellowstone spinoffs, thanks to the incredible success of the original series, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for one more.

Another Yellowstone prequel, currently titled 6666 (pronounced “Four Sixes), is in the works, series creator Taylor Sheridan has confirmed. But there’s one big problem: Sheridan isn’t saying when the series will premiere and as of this writing, there’s no cast.

Four Sixes was initially announced as a planned prequel for the Yellowstone series all the way back in 2021. Since then, however, Sheridan has hardly commented on the series and has only floated a brief description of what the show will center on. While there had been some hope that the series was moving ahead for a 2023 release, the recently ended Hollywood writer and actor strikes all but eliminated that possibility.

It also appears that Sheridan himself is holding up 6666. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this summer, Sheridan said 6666 needed more time.

“That, for a number of reasons, needs a unique level of special care because this is a real place with real families working here,” he said in reference to the series. “You have to respect the lineage. I’ve told [the studio] to be patient.”

Whatever the case for the series delay, interest in 6666 hasn’t waned one bit. And fans of the wildly popular Yellowstone world are anxiously awaiting the 6666 premiere. 

Here’s everything we know so far. And be sure to check back often as we continue to update this page with the latest details.

What is 6666 about?

Details are scant on exactly what we can expect from 6666, but an IMDb listing suggests the series plot will be center on the Comanche tribe and cowboys, along with the ranch itself.

“Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666,” the IMDb listing reads. “Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing. The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately, where world class cowboys are born and made.”

Perhaps most interesting about that, however, is that the show will not be set on the Dutton ranch, allowing the Yellowstone saga to expand outside of its physical confines to an actual ranch that holds considerable historical value in West Texas.

When does 6666 premiere and where can I watch it?

As of this writing, there have been no confirmed reports of when 6666 will air. There’s some hope that 2024 could be the year we finally get the show, but until Sheridan is ready, can find a cast, and puts pen to paper, it’s difficult to say.

However, because Sheridan signed a major deal for spinoffs with Paramount, there’s a good chance that the show will be available to stream on Paramount+ if and when it debuts.

Who is part of the 6666 cast?

We don’t know. As of this writing, no one on the future 6666 cast has been announced and there’s no telling when those announcements will be made.

Is 6666 a real place?

Unlike the Yellowstone ranch in Montana, 6666 is an actual ranch that calls Panhandle, Texas its home. The ranch has been in existence for over 200 years and spans a massive 270,000 acres. And here’s one more neat fact about 6666: Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone and once-struggling actor, acquired the ranch in 2021 and now resides there.

Given that, and considering how serious Sheridan is about ensuring the authenticity of the ranch’s story, it seems possible (if not guaranteed) that 6666 will be filmed on his property at the ranch. But that’s not much of a stretch — scenes from Yellowstone seasons four and five were filmed at 6666.

What is the 6666 connection to the Yellowstone franchise?

During season 4 of Yellowstone, Jimmy (Jefferson White) is sent from the Yellowstone ranch to work at the 6666 ranch, where he finally learns to be a real cowboy; during the final episode of season 4, he appears to leave Yellowstone for good for the Texas ranch, along with his fiancee, Emily (Kathryn Kelly). 

So, there's a chance that both of them will appear in 6666, but, given the IMDB synopsis, they might only have recurring parts if the show dips into the past more than the present. 

While the series plot suggests cowboys will play a major role in the story, and there’s a good chance a Dutton or two will star in the series, it’s currently unclear which Dutton family member and how they’re related to others will find their way to your screen. It’s also possible that the Duttons aren’t featured in the series, since this will be the first spinoff to focus entirely on a completely different ranch in a different state.

Yellowstone season 5 was supposed to premiere its second batch of episodes this month, but the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes put that on hold. Now, Paramount is officially admitting defeat, pushing the series finale to November 2024. But it's not all bad news for fans of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe. 

According to Variety, while fans will have to wait until next fall for the last six episodes of the popular western drama series, Yellowstone’s final season won’t be the end of the Dutton family. Paramount also announced the greenlight for spinoff series 1944 and 2024 at the same time it announced the Yellowstone delay.

So now that we have another 22 episodes of the Sheridan-verse on the way (conservatively), let’s go over what we know about these three shows right now.

Yellowstone, 1944 and 2024: What’s coming 

While we don’t know what’s coming in the final six episodes of Yellowstone, we do at least know where the story will likely pick back up. At the end of episode eight of season 5 (spoiler alert), the Dutton family was on the brink of tearing each other apart, with multiple family members plotting the potential death of each other. Meanwhile, patriarch John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) was dealing with the challenges of being governor of Montana and running the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

In terms of the spinoffs, 2024 is the one we probably know the most amount about at this point — but even that's not much. All we know is that it’s expected to follow the conclusion of Yellowstone both in terms of timeline and airdate and will reportedly feature a new cast of characters and locations. 

This is the same spinoff that Matthew McConaughey was rumored to be joining as buzz was building that Kevin Costner would be leaving Yellowstone. It was originally tipped for later this year but clearly won’t be coming until next November at the earliest. The 2024 spinoff could premiere in conjunction with the original Yellowstone's series finale.

Then there is 1944, which we know essentially nothing about. It’s reportedly being filmed in Bitterroot Valley in Montana at the Chief Joseph Ranch, which serves as the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch in Sheridan’s shows. It could follow up on the next generation of Duttons after 1923, and World War II will likely play some part in the show’s storyline, but aside from that, we can’t speculate.

Oh, and then there’s 6666, which has already been greenlit for the Paramount Network. No, this one doesn’t take place in the year 6666 — in this case, the numbers refer to the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. This ranch has already made an appearance in Yellowstone seasons 4 and 5 and the show is expected to take place in the present day.

Analysis: More Yellowstone on the horizon could indicate the actor’s strike is ending

One bit of news potentially hiding in plain sight is that all these announcements may indicate that Paramount expects the SAG-AFTRA strike to end soon. While we haven’t heard anything official, it’d be odd for the studio to start greenlighting shows and setting release dates if the actors weren’t expected to return to work in the near future.

Adding fuel to this potential fire, Warner Bros. Discovery network HBO also made some announcements of its own this week, including a release date window for House of the Dragon season 2 and a production timeline for The Last of Us season 2. 

Again, there are nuances to all this, and none of these announcements guarantee the strike is ending. But, taken as a broader view, it does seem that the studios choosing to make these announcements is a promising sign that the end of the strike is near. And given the WGA largely won its strike, that could be great news for SAG-AFTRA members and viewers like us. Can’t have great TV shows like Yellowstone without the actors.

Yellowstone is riding off into the sunset, but the sun will rise on a new chapter.

Today (May 5), Paramount announced Yellowstone season 5 will be the final installment of the massively popular Paramount Network show starring Kevin Costner. But a sequel series, possibly fronted by Matthew McConaughey, has already gotten the green light.

Earlier this year, rumors began to float that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan was considering ending the show over Costner's demands for a shorter filming schedule. While no official reason was given, Yellowstone's conclusion is confirmed for November. 

"Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits — from 1883 to Tulsa King, and I am confident our Yellowstone sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life," Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, said in a statement.

The neo-Western follows the Dutton family, whose sixth-generation patriarch John Dutton (Costner) owns the largest ranch in the United States. Located in Montana near Yellowstone National Park, the ranch is under constant threat from land developers, an Indian reservation and conservation activists. 

Yellowstone has become a huge hit for the Paramount Network. The season 5 premiere drew 16 million viewers, making it the most-watched show on TV in all of 2022. Its success has radiated beyond cable TV in the form of two prequel spinoffs, 1883 and 1923, on Paramount Plus. 

The flagship show will begin to wrap up its story with the second half of season 5 in November, with the finale airing in December. The new sequel series will follow immediately.

Star troubles

While it seems bonkers that anyone would mess with such a success, this is not an unique story when it comes to television. Leads have left hit shows before for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, those shows keep going with barely a blip (ER, Cheers); sometimes, the star's absence is a harbinger of doom (Two and a Half Men, House of Cards). 

According to Deadline, Costner allegedly wanted to work one week filming the eight episodes that make up the second half of Yellowstone season 5. Reports also indicated Costner was focusing on an upcoming directorial project, Horizon. The actor's attorney declared the rumors were an "absolute lie" to Puck News. 

Meanwhile, Paramount Network tried to make nice, calling Coster "a phenomenal talent" and "a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come."

In this case, hope didn't float.

Yellowstone sequel series in the works

Yellowstone is dead, long live (another) Yellowstone. In announcing the end of the flagship series, Paramount was quick to assure fans that the franchise is far from dead. A sequel series has been set for December. 

"The Dutton story continues, picking up where Yellowstone leaves off in another epic tale. We are thrilled to bring this new journey to audiences around the world," said David Glasser, CEO of production company 101 Studios.

Though no casting has been confirmed, McConaughey's name has been linked to the sequel for months.  Media outlets reported that the Oscar-winning actor was in talks for the lead role of a Yellowstone sequel. A "handful" of original cast members are expected to join him. That could include the actors playing the next generation of Duttons: Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, Wes Bentley and Cole Hauser. 

In addition to the sequel series, the Yellowstone Universe has a number of irons in the fire. 1923 is bringing back Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren for a second season. An 1883 spinoff centered on Bass Reeves, played by David Oyelowo, is in development. So is 6666, set on a legendary Texas ranch that is now home to former Yellowstone hand Jimmy (Jefferson White). 

In the meantime, as fans wait for Yellowstone season 5 and its spinoffs, they can watch a collection of shows like Yellowstone right now.

The sixth-generation owner, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), works hard to maintain his family’s legacy  — with the help and sometimes hindrance of his adult children. 

Now that the series is over, you might find yourself missing the family drama, political intrigue and dangerous action. While you can get a fix with the "Yellowstone" spinoffs "1883" and "1923", you can also fill the void with other series that share some common themes.

'Outer Range'

This neo-Western feels like someone pitched it as “Yellowstone gets Lost.” Given the success of both of those shows, it’s not a bad idea. Josh Brolin stars as Wyoming rancher Royal Abbott, whose family is dealing with the disappearance of his daughter-in-law. On top of that, his neighbor is making a claim on some of the Abbotts’ land. Here’s where Outer Range diverges from Yellowstone: Royal discovers a mysterious, intermittent, swirling black hole in his west pasture. Why it’s there, what it does and what happens if anyone enters it are all unknown. Things get even more complicated by the arrival of an enigmatic hippie (Imogen Poots), who develops a connection with the void.

'Succession'

"Yellowstone" has long been compared to Succession, since both shows are about wealthy, powerful families seeking to preserve their business. Logan Roy (Brian Cox) is the patriarch in control of a vast media empire, much like John Dutton oversees his vast ranch. Logan also has three adult children who crave power and prosperity. Sometimes, they form an alliance with dear old dad; other times, they scheme to take him down. Kendall (Jeremy Strong),  Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) may have many complicated feelings towards Pop, but he is undoubtedly an oppressive influence on all of them. There’s no escaping Logan’s shadow.

'Ozark'

Like the Duttons, the Byrdes face life-or-death stakes in a rural setting. Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) is a financial advisor in Chicago who’s forced to move his family to the Ozarks when he gets entangled with a Mexican drug cartel. Along with wife Wendy (Laura Linney), he begins laundering money for them. Though they try to shield their kids Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner), the entire family gets involved in their illegal business. In addition to the danger posed by the cartel, the Byrds also have to contend with local crime families, the Langmores and Snells.

'Justified'

The Wild West vibes of "Yellowstone" can also be found in this crime drama, which stars Timothy Olyphant as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens. He plays by his own rules like John Dutton and is a bruiser like cowboy Rip Wheeler. When Raylan is assigned to his home county deep in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Kentucky, he dispenses his unconventional style of justice to local criminals. That makes him some enemies over the years, including the explosive Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), drug queenpin Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale) and mobster Robert Quarles (Neal McDonough).

'Mayor of Kingstown'

"Yellowstone" creator Taylor Sheridan is expanding his TV empire with shows containing many of the same elements as his massive success: a rural setting, a family that wields power in the area, and questionable moral codes. The McCluskys keep the peace in their small run-down Rust Belt town, where incarceration is the only thriving industry. Mike McClusky (Jeremy Renner) acts as a broker between police, criminals, inmates, prison guards and politicians. The show explores themes of corruption, systemic racism, inequality and the injustice present in the prison industrial complex.

'Longmire'

Like "Yellowstone", "Longmire" is a modern Western that takes place in a rural region adjacent to an Native American reservation, features gorgeous vistas, and tackles issues of family, loyalty, and tribal tensions. Sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) investigates crimes in a fictional Wyoming county, with the help of deputy Vic Moretti (Katee Sackhoff) and longtime Cheyenne friend Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips). As he solves cases, Walt also deals with his wife’s recent death and a strained relationship with daughter Cady (Cassidy Freeman).

'The Sopranos'

Tony Soprano and John Dutton have a lot in common. Both head contentious families; operate booming businesses; and face constant threats from outsiders. Tony (James Gandolfini) struggles to balance his life as a mafia capo with his obligations to wife Carmela (Edie Falco), daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) and son A.J. (Robert Iler). Then, there’s his disapproving mother Livia (Nancy Marchand), histrionic sister Janice (Aida Turturro) and bitter Uncle Junior (Dominic Chianese). It’s enough to give Tony panic attacks, so he turns to psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) for therapy. John Dutton should probably take a page from his book.

'Deadwood'

Al Swearengen (Ian McShane) is a saloon owner in the 1870s who controls much of his town’s power. Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) is a former lawman who brings a sense of order and justice to where Swearengen claims to reign. The pair regularly tussle against episodes set throughout history with figures like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane taking center stage for a chain of episodes exploring life in the West. It's all about a lawless society and how its inhabitants end up getting by, even when the lowest of the low appear to be in charge.

Yellowstone may be riding off into the sunset. Rumors are swirling that the future of the mega-hit Paramount Network show is up in the air — shocking since it's one of the most-watched shows on television. 

According to Deadline, creator Taylor Sheridan is considering ending the show in its current form because of star Kevin Costner's demands for a shorter filming schedule for the second half of Yellowstone season 5. 

In its place, Sheridan reportedly wants to launch a "franchise extension" starring Matthew McConaughey. 

Yellowstone is a juggernaut of TV. The season 5 premiere drew over 12 million viewers, making it the top scripted series premiere in all of 2022. It surpassed even the highly anticipated debut of HBO's House of the Dragon. The OG show's success has led to several spinoffs on Paramount Plus: 1883, 1923 and the forthcoming 6666. 

Costner has been a key part of Yellowstone's appeal. The series was initially viewed as a kind of vanity project for him. His exit would leave a big gaping hole in the fabric of the show. He plays the protagonist, John Dutton, the patriarch of the sprawling Montana ranch. Costner recently won a Golden Globe for his performance.

“We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner,” a Paramount Network spokesperson told Deadline.

Deadline's report claims that Costner wanted to shoot for a week in the second half of season 5. According to The Wrap, the limited time is tied to a movie project, Horizon, which he is directing, co-writing and starring in.

If Costner leaves, it wouldn't be the first time the star of a show left before it ended. Ellen Pompeo is stepping down later this month as a series regular on Grey's Anatomy, which she has headlined for 19 seasons. David Caruso infamously walked away from NYPD Blue after one season to pursue a film career. Two and a Half Men killed off Charlie Sheen's lead character when the actor was fired. Same thing with Roseanne Barr on The Conners.

It's unclear if the "franchise extension" starring McConaughey would carry over plots or cast members from Yellowstone. If Sheridan decides to make it an unrelated spinoff, another factor comes into play — streaming rights. 

Currently, Yellowstone's past seasons are available only on Peacock, not Paramount Plus. Meanwhile, Yellowstone's spinoffs are exclusive to the latter. A brand-new show could air on Paramount Network, then stream on its sister streamer to keep current entries in the franchise within the family.

Curiosity got the better of me: I finally started watching Yellowstone. And it was easy, because the Paramount Network series is available on Peacock (which I already pay for, to watch WWE events, because I'm that kind of person — one that understands why others look down on his streaming habits). 

That last little bit of self-deprecation should give you a little insight as to why I came to Yellowstone looking to be entertained. After years of its ratings success with little critical consensus or awards to its name — sometimes, people compare it to critical darling Succession, which I love — Yellowstone looked like a force to be reckoned with. 

All of that, plus little I've recently learned about the public demand and interest in Yellowstone season 5 gave me an itch. Much like how I recently finally started Cobra Kai (it may be one of the best shows on Netflix, but I couldn't finish season 1), I eventually give in and watch long-running shows out of a bit of curiosity.

And because I'm a completionist, I started out right at the beginning. I didn't want to watch this phenomena without some missing context. I wanted no excuses. Spoiler alert: I'm going to keep watching. That said, I'm not in love with it, either. I'm a little bit mystified and confused, too. 

Yellowstone is not exactly meant for me

Full disclosure: I'm a city slicker. And Yellowstone's central narrative — the story of rancher John Dutton (Kevin Costner) trying to keep a hold on his land in Montana — isn't something I can really connect with. I understand a want to keep development off of untouched land. The beauty of Montana's plains is clearly on display here. I just don't ever expect to own land of my own, much less the acreage that the Dutton family has. But that shouldn't be a deal-breaker. I can understand his plight slightly, when I think about it in terms of gentrification, a word that was seemingly intentionally not said in this show. 

No matter where you turn in the first 92-minute long episode (more like movie at that clip) of Yellowstone, talk most often turns to land ownership. But when I learned about how Yellowstone ranch hands get branded, to show how they are both practically "owned" and a part of the family, I felt more unease. My city-boy nature, I could tell, was showing. Everyone in this debate seemed slightly wrong. Dutton for owning such a large glut of land, the greasy folks who want to take it from him and put rodeos on that property and Dutton's son who suggests that Montana build 'up' with condos, instead of using that territory for needed housing. A friend tells me that this son, Jamie, is actually a villain. So, that has me intrigued.

Sometimes, fortunately, things dip into family issues such as estranged relatives. That's more interesting. Costner's John Dutton wants to be a part of his grandson's Tate's life, but Tate's dad Kayce split ways from the family, and lives with his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille), an Indigenous American who lives in the Broken Rock Indian Reservation. There's something interesting there, but it's all too minimized at this point.

But Yellowstone not pertaining to my experience is not a deal-breaker. I am able to watch stuff that isn't really in my wheelhouse. For example Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a series I watched all of, to cover it here — even though Fantasy isn't my genre. And at first, I actually enjoyed it. That didn't last too long, though.

Yellowstone's biggest shocker for me is its characters

I genuinely don't want this article to be about a city vs country split. We don't need that sort of divisive talk right now. But I'm primarily not enthused with Yellowstone because of its cast of characters being much more boring and dry than I'd expected for such a popular show. Watching all 90 minutes of its first episode, I kept thinking "This? This is the biggest show on cable?"

So far, John Dutton (Costner) is one of those characters that doesn't speak much, so that every word he does says counts more. I get that there's a tough, cool, cowboy archetype he's playing to, but it doesn't do much for me when the central character of a show barely says much, and when he does I have to turn up the volume.

Even worse, are the Dutton boys and other ranch employees. Each, it feels like, lives a more miserable experience than the last. For example, there's Jamie (yes, Wes Bentley is still acting here's where he's hiding), a lawyer who is seemingly disliked by everyone — with little reason as to why. Maybe that's because people don't like lawyers? The aforementioned Kayce seems like a good man who wants to do right by his family, but has the charisma of sawdust. Then, there's Lee (Dave Annable), who John talks down to for little apparent reason. 

Yellowstone gets a lot of "Succession, but in Montana" talk, but from where I'm sitting, I'd rather chat with the worst Roy Boy than any male in the Dutton tree. Greg the Egg and Tom may be failsons of the highest degree, but they're at least humorous (however unintentionally that may be).

Fortunately, the Dutton sons have a sister who is far more interesting: Beth (Kelly Reilly). Arriving on the scene in Yellowstone to smolder, look down upon others and disassemble the confidence of a stranger at the bar in mere minutes, Beth clears the "interesting" bar with ease. She even uses ranch hand Rip (Cole Hauser) for her own pleasure before emasculating him verbally on her way out the door.

Beth isn't why I'll keep watching Yellowstone, but (so far) she's one of the show's clear signs of life.

I'm watching more Yellowstone out of fairness and curiosity

As I mentioned above, I gave The Rings of Power — which I have no personal interest in ever watching again — a whole season. But that's not how I started out. In between writing a review of its first episodes, and watching the next few, my opinion about Rings of Power swung wildly from curious to "can this somehow get canceled?"

So, I want to try and give Yellowstone a similar try. Right now, I've invested 92 minutes into the series, and I feel as if I'll be more confident with a judgement about the show after I've finished its fourth episode. Looking at the running times for the series, that will put me at just under four hours total. By that point, I feel like I'll have given Yellowstone a true chance. Unless, of course, a whole lot of you write to me and say "It gets better in season 2." As someone who's heard that about many a shows — Parks and Recreation and Buffy: The Vampire Slayer come to mind — I could be convinced. Yellowstone's in its fifth season, with no signs of slowing down. It already spun off one prequel — 1883 — and It's got Harrison Ford and Dame Helen Mirren in the new 1923 prequel series.

There's a nugget of a show I'd enjoy in Yellowstone, so I'll keep looking for it.

Travel West and back in time to 1923 in a new Yellowstone prequel that continues to the story of the Dutton family's ownership of their ranch throughout the decades. 

The original Yellowstone series focuses on Kevin Costner's John Dutton III, the sixth-generation patriarch to oversee the large, prosperous ranch. He is carrying on a legacy started by ancestors James and Margaret Dutton, whose founding of the ranch is chronicled in the first Yellowstone prequel 1883.  

1923 sees a different generation of Duttons — patriarch Jacob (Harrison Ford) and matriarch Cara (Helen Mirren) — running the ranch in the early twentieth century. They must contend with extreme hardships, including Prohibition, Western expansion, pandemics, droughts and the looming Great Depression.

Here's everything we know so far about 1923.

1923 release date

Paramount Plus has set the 1923 premiere date for Sunday, December 18, 2022. The first episode will air on both Paramount Plus and the Paramount Network. 

The second episode will air Jan. 1 (skipping the Sunday that is Christmas Day). 

The first season consists of eight episodes. A second season has been planned by creator Taylor Sheridan.

The first 1923 teaser trailer is all about violence and how it has "always haunted this family," as a female narrator notes. Her words play over flashes of violent action, with characters alternately racing on horseback, pointing and shooting guns, and beating someone with their fists. 

This is still the very wild west. And the Duttons are prepared to do whatever it takes to defend their ranch and family.

1923 cast

The cast of 1923 is led by Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton. They are the patriarch and matriarch of the Dutton family in the early twentieth century. 

Jacob is the brother of James Dutton (portrayed by Tim McGraw in 1883), who founded the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Cara is Jacob's wife of Irish descent. 

"Jacob’s the silverback," Ford told Vanity Fair. "He’s responsible for that branch of the family. These are two people with a very strong bond to each other who are facing really complicated circumstances."

Mirren explained, “I see Cara as an immigrant. One of the things I very strongly wanted was that she would speak with an Irish accent, not with an American accent. It’s always slightly annoyed me with Westerns that you have all these people speaking with modern American accents when in fact so many of them were fairly recent immigrants."

She added, "The big Irish immigration to America, because of the potato famine, was in the late 19th century. That absolutely chronologically works for Cara. She’s now in her late 60s, we imagine. So she would’ve come, I think, as a young woman from Ireland. I think that’s one of the extraordinary elements of America. The people who arrived, and are still arriving, are people with enormous resilience and enormous courage and independence."

Ford and Mirren will be joined by other 1923 cast members, including:

What is Yellowstone: 1923 about?

According to the official Paramount Plus synopsis, 1923 will "explore the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west and the Duttons who call it home."

Forty years have passed since James and Margaret Dutton arrived in Montana to found the family ranch. In 1893, just a decade after that, James died while pursuing horse thieves. 

Now, his brother Jacob is running the ranch with the help of his wife Cara, nephew John Dutton Sr. (portrayed in 1883 as a child by Audie Rick) and John's son Jack. 

"There's very little that sustains them other than themselves and the hard work and investment they put into their future and their family," Ford told Vanity Fair of the current Dutton patriarch and matriarch. "It is a tough life, and it's full of not just physical challenges but moral ones as well." 

The Duttons' moral code figures to be a significant subject in 1923, highlighted by classes with local ranchers they call "sheep men."

"You need someone who is capable of making decisions, and hopefully making the right decisions, but at least making a decision and going with it — in other words, a leader," Mirren said. "That's what has propelled them into this position of running the ranch, running the family, being the linchpin around whom, at this moment in time, the family revolves."

Another plot will revolve around young indigenous women who are forced to attend government-run boarding schools. This real-life practice took Native American girls of that era away from their culture and language to try to assimilate them into Anglo society.

So, you may be a bit confused about all these Duttons, how they are related to each other and their ties to the present-day characters played by Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, etc. 

OK, so here we go:

First generation: James Dutton (McGraw) and wife Margaret Dutton (Hill) move to Montana and found the ranch. They travel with their children, including 5-year-old John. These events are portrayed in the show 1883). 

Second generation: James has a brother named Jacob, who takes over the ranch when James dies in 1893 since James' sons John and Spencer are teenagers.

Third generation: John grows up, marries Emma and has a son of his own, Jack, who is likely in his early to mid-20s. 

Four generation: Presumably Jack and an unknown wife have a son, John Dutton Jr. 

Fifth generation: John Dutton Jr. (portrayed by Dabney Coleman in Yellowstone) runs the ranch, eventually bequeathing it to his son.

Sixth generation: John Dutton III (Costner) is the present-day patriarch. If the ranch survives, it will pass down to a seventh generation — one or more of his children Kayce, Beth and Jamie.

John oversees the ranch alongside his son, Kayce Dutton (Lucas Grimes), a former Navy SEAL. Kayce is married to a Native American woman, Monica (Kelsey Asbille Chow), and they have a young boy named Tate. John's adoptive son, Jamie (Wes Bentley) is an attorney and aspiring politician.

Then there's John's daughter, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), a financier who has struggled with substance abuse problems. She married the ranch foreman, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser).

The Duttons are continually fighting to maintain control over the ranch. They deal with thorny political machinations, battle greedy land developers and manage tensions with the local indigenous tribes.

If you've already watched the entire series and want more, there's good news. The show's ratings success led to a Paramount Plus spinoff, "1883" that tells the origin story of the Dutton family. Another "Yellowstone" prequel, "1923", is also available to stream on Paramount Plus and several more spinoffs are in the works.

All will be revealed, as the first Yellowstone season 5 teaser trailer promises. The 15-second video, which aired during the 2022 MTV VMAs, previews the next installment of the hit Paramount Network drama. And its two-hour premiere coming Nov. 13 looks to be action-packed. 

In a gravelly voice-over, Kevin Costner's ranch patriarch John Dutton says, "We'll show the world who we are ... and what we do." Considering all the blood on the Duttons' hands, that sounds like a threat! 

The teaser flashes glimpses of the key players, including Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton, Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton and Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler. No doubt the always-calculating Beth will use this to her and the family's advantage. 

Meanwhile, John may use whatever political capital he gains to help his paramour, activist Summer Higgins (Piper Perabo), avoid prison time. As for Kayce, his vision quest ended with him declaring, "I saw the end of us." Very ominous!

Paramount Plus is betting big on the Dutton family. The streamer just confirmed (via Entertainment Weekly) that the Yellowstone universe is set to expand even further with a new spin off series called 1932 in the works. 

This companion series will follow a new generation of the Dutton clan in a period fraught with challenges against a backdrop of western expansion, prohibition and the Great Depression. No information has been given on exactly which members of the family the series will follow, but either way we’re excited to see the world of Yellowstone fleshed out even further. 

Avid viewers will know that 1932 isn’t the first Yellowstone spin-off. 1883 hit Paramount Plus last year, and is currently in the middle of its first season with new episodes dropping weekly. The Tim McGraw lead spin off is an origin story of sorts, exploring how the Dutton family came to own the land that ultimately becomes the Yellowstone Ranch. 

Alongside confirming 1932, Paramount also announced plans for more 1883. It’s not currently known whether this means a full second season or if its first collection of episodes will be increased; the former seems far more likely. 

Yellowstone season 4 wrapped up last month, and was something of a ratings monster for Paramount. It’s no surprise that the network is using the interest surrounding the show to boost the popularity of its Paramount Plus streaming service. As it stands, 1883 is one of the service's few original hits, so subscribers will surely be thrilled with the news that an additional spin off on the way. 

Chris McCarthy, President of Paramount’s parent company, ViacomCBS, released a statement alongside the announcement of 1932, he said: “With the brilliant mind and gifted storytelling of Taylor Sheridan, we have created an entirely new world to explore with 1883 while expanding ‘Yellowstone,’ and with 1932 we will open up a new chapter in this rapidly growing universe."

McCarthy was also keen to stress the importance of franchising popular properties in order to “drive record growth for both streaming and linear properties.”  As such, it doesn’t look like Paramount has any plans to slow the expansion of the Yellowstone universe any time soon.

Fans waiting for the Yellowstone season 5 premiere are in for a bit of a wait — though thankfully not as long as the two-year gap between the third and fourth seasons.

Executive producer David Glasser revealed the possible Yellowstone season 5 release date in an interview with Variety. He said show creator Taylor Sheridan is hard at work on the scripts.

"It’s the prime of the show," Glasser said. "I think the show is still maturing, and there’s still a lot of story to tell. I know with Taylor, he’s got a lot to say and a lot to write. He’s deep into Season 5 of Yellowstone now. He’s got some incredible ideas that he shared that I think audiences are going to be really excited about.”

In that same interview, Glasser said season 5 production should resume in May with a fall premiere on Paramount Network. 

Yellowstone has become a juggernaut in the ratings. The season 4 finale hit a new series high with 10.3 million viewers. The show's massive success has already yielded one spinoff series, the prequel 1883 on Paramount Plus, and another, 6666, is in the works. Yellowstone also received its first major awards nomination, a SAG Awards nod for Best Drama Ensemble. The show 

A fall premiere for Yellowstone season 5 may disappoint some fans who had hoped the show would return to its usual schedule of releasing in the summer around Father's Day. Then again, it's much more preferable to the two-year wait they endured before season 4 due to pandemic-related production delays. 

And fans can take heart that season 5 probably won't be among canceled shows anytime soon. As Glasser said, "There's still a lot of story to tell." Then again, don't expect it to pull a Grey's Anatomy and run for 19 seasons. Sheridan previously told The New York Times, "There’s only so much hovering one can do before the story starts to lose its locomotion; you can’t put it in neutral just because it’s successful. It will go as many years as it takes for me to tell the story, but you’re not going to see nine seasons of it. No way."

Plus, there's still the unresolved issue of Garrett Randall (Will Patton), who is responsible for the attacks against the Duttons. Will Jamie (Wes Bentley) finally reveal what his biological father did against his adoptive one? And will Garrett be made to pay for his crimes?

As John Dutton once said, "Words are weapons now." And there will be a lot of them on the Official Yellowstone Podcast, which launched today. The companion podcast will cover the series as a whole and Yellowstone season 4, which is currently airing on the Paramount Network.
