We’re in the mid-August lull now, and that’s clearly being reflected in this week’s line of new movies across the best streaming services. The biggest players like Netflix and Prime Video are taking the week off, but this gives HBO Max and Paramount+ a chance to pick up the slack. My pick of the week comes on premium streaming with the digital release of “Toy Story 5.” Pixar’s latest animated adventure is pure joy and proves this franchise still has that beloved spark even after all this time. But if you’re craving something less family-friendly, there's an overlooked Anne Hathaway drama on HBO Max, and Paramount+ has a new horror.

‘Toy Story 5’ (PVOD)

Let me take this opportunity to apologize to Pixar. I was one of many who felt that “Toy Story 5” was a totally unnecessary sequel with the franchise ready to retire. I should have had more faith in the folks over at Pixar because their most consistent series delivers yet again in this fifth outing. Focusing on Jessie (voiced by Joan Cusack), it’s another family-friendly ride stuffed with humor and enough heart to make you tear up a little.

In “Toy Story 5,” it’s “toys vs. tech” as Bonnie (Scarlett Spears) is gifted a tablet device called Lilypad (Greta Lee) and quickly becomes screen-obsessed. Concerned about the impact this new gadget is having on Bonnie, all your favorite toys, including Jessie, Buzz (Tim Allen) and Woody (Tom Hanks), team up to save playtime. Along the way, Jessie is also forced to face her past and accept that letting go is part of life. It all builds to one of the franchise’s most emotionally charged moments.

‘Rose of Nevada’ (PVOD)

There are a few overlooked movies heading to streaming this week, but none of them are rated as highly on Rotten Tomatoes as “Rose of Nevada.” This sci-fi drama holds a mighty impressive 92% score, so if you put stock in RT ratings, you’ll definitely want to consider streaming this British movie. It pairs together George MacKay and Callum Turner, who you can currently see in theaters in the rom-com “One Night Only.”

Set in a Cornish fishing village battling against economic downturn, the legend of the Rose of Nevada, a vessel that mysteriously disappeared at sea three decades earlier, still grips the town. When the long-lost boat suddenly reappears in the harbor, Nick (MacKay) and Liam (Turner) join its new crew and, on their maiden voyage, find themselves transported back in time to 30 years previously. It’s a salty sci-fi adventure with lots of heart.

‘Passenger’ (Paramount+)

When “Obsession” and “Backrooms” were hogging the horror spotlight in theaters, another chiller was also battling for attention: “Passenger.” It definitely didn’t manage to compete with two of the year’s buzziest flicks. Maybe that’s because it’s quite a generic scary movie, but it does have a few spooky moments. Plus, it effectively uses the inherent fear of driving on a dark road in the middle of the night. Just expect lots of jump scares.

A young couple, Tyler (Jacob Scipio) and Maddie (Lou Llobell), have recently quit their jobs and taken up the van life lifestyle. Swapping everyday mundanity for a life of living on the open road. When they witness a gruesome accident on an isolated highway, something sinister begins to follow them. Hearing tall tales of a demonic presence known as the Passenger, they must rid themselves of this specter before it’s too late.

‘Mother Mary’ (HBO Max)

Ann Hathaway is having a record year at the box office. Cumulatively, her movies have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide, with “The Odyssey” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2” the standouts. However, “Mother Mary,” a psychological drama starring the popular actress, didn’t quite manage to make the same sort of splash. Which is a shame, as my colleague Malcolm McMillan notes that Hathaway “stuns” in this David Lowery project.

Hathaway plays the eponymous Mother Mary, a globally successful pop star who is preparing for a comeback after an on-stage accident derailed her career. With the pressure mounting, she seeks out her estranged best friend and former costume designer, Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel). This opens old wounds and a reckoning with the past. Part drama, part thriller, part romance, and even part concert movie, “Mother Mary” is a fascinating mix, even if it doesn’t quite manage to blend all its elements perfectly.

‘The Fence’ (AMC+)

Claire Denis’ new movie is an adaptation of the play “Black Battles with Dogs” by Bernard-Marie Koltès. This drama stars Isaach de Bankolé, Matt Dillon, Mia McKenna-Bruce and Tom Blyth. I’m particularly interested in this one due to the latter two names. Tom Blyth, who you might recognize from “The Hunger Games” franchise, was excellent in “Wasteman” earlier this year, and Mia McKenna-Bruce completely blew me away in 2023’s devastating British drama “How to Have Sex.” Consider me intrigued!

Set on a construction site in West Africa, the site’s supervisor, Horn (Dillon), shares a cabin with a young engineer, Cal (Tom Blyth). Horn’s new bride, Leone (McKenna-Bruce), arrives for a visit, while at the same time a man named Alboury (de Bankolé) appears demanding the body of his brother, who died earlier that day on site. What follows is a very long night, as Alboury refuses to leave quietly, and Leone is caught in the middle.

'Blue Beetle' (2023) (Prime Video)

Genre: Superhero movie

What it's about: One of the last DC Expanded Universe movies before James Gunn took over at DC Studios, "Blue Beetle" stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes. He's a recent college graduate who goes to work for Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon). While there, he comes across an alien relic known as the Scarab, which fuses with him and grants him powers. There's just one problem: Victoria wants it for herself.

Why you should watch it: While this movie is from before the DCU, Gunn is keeping Blue Beetle in his new DC canon. So this movie is still somewhat relevant, as Maridueña is set to reprise as Reyes in "Man of Tomorrow" next year. Plus, it's a surprisingly good movie, despite flopping at the box office.

'Furious' season 1 (Hulu)

Genre: Crime drama series

What's it about? Emmy Rossum stars in "Furious" as FBI agent Alice Black. A former homicide detective, she's now working for the Feds. Her first case is a hunt for a serial killer (Lola Petticrew), but not all is as it seems. This killer is a sex trafficking survivor on a quest for vigilante justice, and that might stop Alice from bringing her in when the time comes..

Why you should watch it: This show has been a surprise hit for Hulu. It's currently an impressive 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences are similarly enthused, rating it 87% fresh. "Furious" might secretly be the show of the summer, and it's not too late to catch up.

FX's "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" season 18 premiere (Hulu)

Genre: Situational comedy series

What's it about? The gang's all here. Charlie, Mac, Dee and Dennis (Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson and Glenn Howerton) are back for a new season and they're doing everything from heading to the Renaissance Faire to trying non-alcoholic beer and even getting in nine innings of baseball. It looks like Frank (Danny DeVito) is even getting married ... though who knows if we'll ever get to "I do."

Why you should watch it: 18 seasons in, you probably already know if you like "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or not. But if you're on the fence, don't be. Nearly two decades later, this show remains an absolute riot.

‘Masters of the Universe' (2026)

Amazon MGM Studios’ “Masters of the Universe” underwhelmed in theaters, failing to recoup its $170 million budget, but it’s been far from a disappointment on Prime Video, where it’s had the No. 1 spot on lockdown for more than a week. He-Man fans didn’t turn out in large numbers when it was in cinemas, but they’re paying attention on streaming. The fantasy blockbuster also holds a strong 86% viewer score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Based on the beloved Mattel toy range, which was originally created to compete with a rival’s lineup of popular “Star Wars” action figures, “Masters of the Universe” follows Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine), who is sent to Earth as a child when his home of Eternia is conquered by the ruthless Skeletor (Jared Leto). Years later, now a fully grown adult, he must return to the fantasy land to fulfil his destiny and save his people from his nemesis.

‘Project Hail Mary’ (2026)

I’ve recommended “Project Hail Mary” dozens of times already this year, and I’m not stopping now. Put simply, this is one of the year’s most entertaining blockbusters, with plenty of heart and exciting moments. It’s adapted from Andy Weir’s novel and stars Ryan Gosling as an astronaut on a critical mission. But while Gosling is fantastic, the real star of the show is an alien creature named Rocky, brought to life by some phenomenal puppetry.

In “Project Hail Mary,” astronaut Ryland Grace (Gosling) awakes on an interstellar craft, millions of miles away from Earth. The problem is he can’t remember his mission, or even his own name. Piecing together his past, Grace must find a way to prevent Earth’s sun from dying, but fortunately, he’s got some help from a lovable alien, Rocky. “Project Hail Mary” is the complete sci-fi package; it’s funny, thrilling and packed with memorable moments.

‘The Gates’ (2026)

Similar to "Masters of the Universe," "The Gates" is a movie that didn't receive much attention on the big screen, but is getting a second win via Prime Video. This dark thriller marks the final movie appearance of James Van Der Beek, who passed away in February. While the reviews were lukewarm, Van Der Beek's villainous performance was highlighted as one of the movie's biggest strengths. I'm glad to see his final film role celebrated.

“The Gate” sees a trio of college friends (Mason Gooding, Algee Smith and Keith Powers) enjoying a road trip when they make what proves to be a potentially fatal mistake by taking a shortcut through a remote gated community. They witness a ritualistic murder and are then trapped within the community's walls. Hunted by the local residents who plan to frame them for the murder, the trio endures a desperate battle for survival.

'Facing El Chapo' (2026)

Genre: Crime action thriller movie

What it's about: Known as "La Captura" in its native Mexico, "Facing El Chapo" stars Noé Hernández and Alfonso Herrera as a pair of cops on a routine traffic stop. That is, until they open the car, where they find cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Now, they just have to survive bringing him in, which is easier said than done.

Why you should watch it: I hadn't heard of this movie before watching the trailer. But I'm sold. This movie looks genuinely thrilling from the bit the trailer shows off, and is probably a must-watch for fans of "Sicario" or "Narcos."

'SEAL Team' seasons 1-7

Genre: Military drama series

What it's about: "SEAL Team" centers around Master Chief Special Warfare Operator Jason Hayes (David Boreanaz). He leads Bravo Team, a unit within the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group of the U.S. Navy SEALs. Each episode, they undertake the most dangerous, high-stakes missions the military can throw at them. As if that wasn't difficult enough, though, they still have to try and keep their personal lives intact when they get home.

Why you should watch it: This show was a massive hit for CBS and Paramount. With 114 episodes available, it's also supremely bingable. If you like a military drama or even a procedural like "NCIS," this show is worth a watch.

'Silo' season 3 (Apple TV)

Genre: Sci-fi dystopian drama series

What it's about: "Silo" is back, and season 3 is in full swing. This latest season starts with Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) alive but suffering from amnesia. She's also been made Mayor, which is a problem because ... well, the amnesia. Meanwhile, in the past, we're seeing the events that sent humanity underground into the silos decades ago.

Why you should watch it: The first two seasons of "Silo" have been great. So expectations are high. Thankfully, our Managing Streaming Editor, Kelly Woo, praised the show in her "Silo" season 3 premiere review, giving it a 4.5 out of five stars.

'Don't Say Good Luck' (Netflix)

Genre: Musical teen drama movie

What's it about? "Don't Say Good Luck" stars Sunny Sandler as Sophie. She's in high school, hoping to be an actress. But just as she scores the lead in the high school musical, her home life starts to unravel after the arrival of devastating news.

Why you need to watch it: Based on the trailer, it sure seems like Melanie Lynskey dies at the end of the movie, which is a bummer. But whether she does or not, this movie seems to be a critical hit for Netflix. It's currently 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is seriously impressive.

'Normal' (HBO Max)

Genre: Action crime thriller movie

What's it about? "Normal" stars Bob Odenkirk as Ulysses. He is settling in as the new sheriff of Normal, Minnesota, while dealing with his troubled past. Unfortunately for him, he quickly learns that the Yakuza are using the town as a bank for their ill-gotten gains, and the entire town is in on it.

Why you should watch it: "Normal" feels at times like better movies such as "Fargo" and "Seven Samurai." If you have HBO Max already, there are worse movies to watch. Especially since the premise is compelling. But aside from a few incredible kills, I'd rather watch "Nobody."

‘My Life with the Walter Boys’

Netflix subscribers are clearly enjoying their return to Silver Falls, as the third season of teen drama “My Life with the Walter Boys” remains locked at No. 1 on the platform’s top 10 most-watched list. The series has a dedicated fanbase, and with its melodramatic love triangle heating up, season 3 hasn’t skipped a beat. Whether you’re returning to the Falls or starting from scratch, “My Life with Walter Boys” is a real guilty pleasure.

In her review of the latest 10-episode season, Tom’s Guide’s own Alix Blackburn said, “‘My Life with the Walter Boys’ season 3 is messy, overstuffed, and occasionally overwhelming, but its addictive romance, lovable characters, and bingeable drama make it hard to resist." Sure, this Netflix series falls into predictable teen drama grooves, but who doesn’t love a knotty love triangle?

‘Let’s Marry Harry’

Speaking of guilty pleasure watches, Netflix’s increasingly vast slate of vapid reality TV shows has been expanded with “Let’s Marry Harry.” The Harry in question is Harry Jowsey, an Australian television personality and social media influencer (aren’t they all) who has appeared in reality favorites, “Too Hot to Handle,” “The Amazing Race,” Love Island,” and “Dancing with the Stars.” Now he’s got his very own TV show on Netflix.

Taking cues from shows like “The Bachelor,” Harry claims to be done with the dating game and now wants to settle down. So, 20 women compete for the opportunity to marry Harry. Offering advice are some of Harry’s closest friends, including his ex-girlfriend (I guess exes can stay friends) and television presenter Amanda Kloots. As per the genre traditions, this show is glossy and overedited, but reality obsessives will likely enjoy it.

‘The Bombing of Pan Am 103’

When a TV show is based on a true story, it adds to the intensity. Knowing that the events on screen really happened makes every moment hit harder. That’s the case for “The Bombing of Pan Am 103,” a British limited series that arrived on Netflix at the end of July after debuting on the BBC in the U.K. in the spring. This six-part show chronicles the deadliest terrorist attack in British history and the investigation that followed.

On 21 December 1988, Pan Am flight 103 was on course from London Heathrow to New York’s JFK airport. While flying over the town of Lockerbie, Scotland, a bomb in the hold detonated, resulting in 270 casualties, including the death of 11 local residents on the ground. The show follows the investigation by the British and U.S. governments to find those responsible for this horrific attack and stars Connor Swindells, Merritt Wever, Patrick J. Adams and Eddie Marsan.

It’s been a long time since I could wholeheartedly recommend a new Netflix movie. “Voicemails for Isabelle” had strong cast chemistry but was overstuffed with genre tropes, “The Last House” had a promising first half and then collapsed on itself in a spectacularly misjudged third act, and “Ladies First”? Well, the less said about that utter trainwreck, the better.

This is to say that I went into “Don’t Say Good Luck,” the latest Netflix project from the House of Sandler, with, at best, modest expectations. It would be easy to accuse this new comedy drama of being a nepotism project. It stars Sunny Sandler, daughter of Adam Sandler, and comes just a few months after the older Sandler daughter, Sadie, got her own Netflix movie earlier this year, the fun but inherently forgettable “Roommates.”

Netflix is firmly in the Sandler family business, but it’s the youngest of the clan that has delivered the goods for the big red streaming service. “Good Say Good Luck” is a genuinely touching teen drama, and while it explores very familiar topics, a standing-ovation-worthy performance from Sunny Sandler elevates this crowd-pleaser above the pack. It’s a new Netflix movie that stands out in a sea of streaming originals not worthy of your watchlist.

What is ‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ about?

Sophie (Sunny Sandler) is a spirited 16-year-old hoping to land a supporting role in her high school’s upcoming production of the popular Broadway musical “Waitress.” Much to her shock, after an emotionally charged audition, she lands her dream role, the lead, Jenna.

As she prepares for opening night, her home life becomes more dramatic than any of the events depicted on stage when her mother (Melaine Lynskey) discovers her cancer has returned. As her father (Max Greenfield) attempts to balance looking after his ill wife and Sophie’s two younger brothers, the family home becomes increasingly chaotic.

Throw in two grandparents (Bebe Neuwirth and Steve Buscemi), high school crushes (and naturally some heartache), squabbles with best friends, and Sophie finds herself torn between wanting to give her all to the production and wanting to spend as much time with her mom as possible.

‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ is the best Netflix movie in months

There are a lot of familiar themes in “Don’t Say Good Luck.” It’s far from the first comedy-drama to tackle a teen struggling to grapple with a parent’s serious illness while also balancing all the usual high school drama. So, I can’t really award this Netflix movie many points for originality. But it treads this well-worn ground with grace, humor, and lots of heart.

Sunny Sandler is the movie’s fulcrum, and much of what works runs through her tender performance. You’ll probably enjoy this movie and her performance more if you appreciate musical theater (specifically “Waitress” itself), but even if you have no love for stagecraft, her torn emotional state will likely bring you to tears. Particularly in a touching finale that ends the movie on a bittersweet note. Sunny Sandler appears to have a bright future.

But the youngest daughter of Adam Sandler doesn’t have to carry the movie’s emotional load solo. Melanie Lynskey delivers a devastating supporting performance as a mother fighting a serious illness while trying not to lose herself in the battle. Max Greenfield is also strong as the family’s father, and Steven Buscemi pops up with a few chuckle-worthy lines.

The movie sings when it explores the family dynamic, which is thankfully always kept loving. There is no tacky melodrama involving parental divorce or anything so needless. Sophie's family is together through it all. It's at its best when Sophie is torn between her responsibilities to her castmates on stage and her desire to support and spend quality time with her mother.

It’s less successful when it briefly devolves into adolescent angst, like boy trouble. This subplot could have been axed with no overall loss. Perhaps it's included to contrast Sophie's home life, where the grim realities of a serious illness hang heavy in the air, with the more carefree nature of high school dating. But her crush isn't developed enough, and this particular side story veers too heavily into clichés, including a weak self-empowering speech.

“Don’t Say Good Luck” is a sweet little movie. It pulls at your heartstrings in all the right ways, and Sunny Sandler and Lynskey deliver memorable performances, forming a mother-daughter bond that is easy to invest in. While it doesn’t put the original in Netflix Original, it’s unquestionably one of the streaming service’s strongest efforts this year. And frankly, it’s a colossal setup from anything Adam Sandler has headlined for Netflix.

MLB Field of Dreams: Phillies vs. Twins (Netflix)

Genre: Live sporting event

What it's about: For the first time in four years, baseball is returning to the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa, built on the site of the stadium from the iconic Kevin Costner movie of the same name. Tonight, this patch of former cornfield will host the Philadelphia Phillies as they take on (and hopefully pummel) the Minnesota Twins. Given that we've lost five of our last eight, though, that's not a guarantee.

Why you should watch it: If you build it, they will stream. At least, that's what Netflix is hoping. It's their first time hosting this live Major League Baseball event. But Netflix is now fairly experienced at broadcasting live sports, so hopefully it'll be all Schwarbombs and no buffering.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 4 (Paramount+)

Genre: Science fiction series

What's it about? "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, a familiar name for "Star Trek" fans. He's, of course, the captain of the USS Enterprise. He's also joined in this series by some more familiar names. There's Spock (Ethan Peck), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn) and several others who have appeared in previous "Star Trek" movies and shows.

Why you should watch it: Season 4 covers the fourth year of the Enterprise's five-year mission. It's been well-received and is currently rated an impressive 92% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Don't skip over this latest "Trek" series.

'The Shards' season 1 (Hulu)

Genre: Teen thriller series

What's it about? "The Shards" is adapted from the fictionalized memoir of show co-creator Bret Easton Ellis. Set at Buckley Prep, it stars Igby Rigney as a younger version of the "American Psycho" author. What feels like a good life gets shattered when a new student, Robert (Homer Gere), arrives at the same time a serial killer known as the Trawler becomes active.

Why you should watch it: Ryan Murphy is a prolific showrunner, and his FX shows all tend to have a combination of polish, style and darkness. "The Shards" seems to be cut from that same cloth, especially with Ellis on hand to turn up the dark, twisted drama. Just be warned that most people seem to either love it or hate it.

After watching hours of content on the QM7L and lab testing it myself, it is clear that this isn’t just another affordable 75-inch TV: The QM7L sets new expectations for exactly how much performance you should expect from an affordable 75-inch TV for your money. Here’s why I think it’s one of the best TVs of 2026 (so far).

TCL QM7L review: Pricing and availability

The QM7L is the most affordable entry point to TCL’s SQD Mini-LED tier. At the very top of TCL’s 2026 lineup is the TCL X11L which we reviewed in February, and the middle is the TCL QM8L that we previously reviewed in April. Listed pricing for the QM7L starts at $1,200 for a 55-inch model, though when on sale, you’ll find it for as low as $1,000.

The 75-inch model we have for review has a list cost of $2,000, but it is currently on sale for $1,500. You can go all the way up to a 98-inch version for $4,000 — or $3,000 when it’s on sale.

Original MSRPs for the whole range are listed below, also accounting for sale prices. TCL has kept the pricing on the 75-inch model identical to last year's QM7K, making the upgrades this set offers feel like even better value.

Note that dimming zones on the QM7L are proportional by size, and TCL claims the largest size of this TV can hit up to 2,100+ discrete dimming zones and a total of 3,000 nits of brightness. The core audio hardware on the QM7L is identical across all screen sizes, though, so buying a smaller size doesn’t mean you’ll get worse audio performance.

Pricing-wise, the TCL QM7L lines up with its direct competitor, Hisense. The Hisense U7 75-inch model has the exact price as this TCL. On the higher-end side, the more premium True RGB Sony Bravia 7 II comes in at a whopping $3,099 for a 75-inch model. Meanwhile, if you want an OLED alternative, the Samsung S85H comes in at $2,399 for a 77-inch model.

TCL QM7L review: Design and ports

The 75-inch QM7L is a huge TV, measuring 65.6 inches wide and weighing nearly 59 pounds with its stand attached. Despite its portly stature, the TV keeps to the streamlined design of its QM8L sibling with its center-facing stand.

The overall look and design is simple, as the TV has minimal branding aside from a small TCL logo on the thin bottom chin. There’s also TCL’s SQD branding on the right side bezel which has a nice brushed, metal-like finish to it.

Setup involves sliding one half of a plastic stand into the wedge-shaped plastic base, and then screwing the stand into the back of the TV. It’s not as intuitive as just having to slide the stand into the TV like on a Sony Bravia 7 II, but the stand is quite sturdy.

You have a little under two inches of room under the bezel in the middle to slide accessories and to reach the power button in the middle of the chin. The side of the TV comes in at a thickness of around 2 inches.

The ports for the QM7L are on the back right side of the TV, in an easy to reach spot not tucked under a bezel. There are four HDMI 2.1 ports — but not all of them are made equal. You can only get 144Hz out of HDMI 1 and 2; it’s only 60Hz at 1080p for HDMI 3 and 4. Additional ports include a USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 port, along with Ethernet, and an optical digital audio output.

The rear of the TV has the two Bang and Olufsen speakers at the top, and the screw holes for the VESA mount. For network connectivity, the TV uses Wi-Fi 5, which is a bit dated at this point but not a huge dealbreaker if your router does not support the new Wi-Fi 6 standard.

TCL QM7L review: How we test

In our New York City test lab, my lab assistant and I test every TV across SDR and HDR benchmarks using the 10% window. For a true to cinema look and feel, and for color accuracy, we switch the TV over to Filmmaker Mode, usually the “best” mode on the TV. We also disable any intrusive ambient light sensors that could skew our meter’s readings.

In terms of tools, we use the Jeti spectraval 1501-HiRes spectroradiometer to profile our Klein K10-A colorimeter. Once profiled, this high-end hardware works in tandem with a Murideo 8K-SIX-G Metal pattern generator and a custom workflow in Portrait Displays’ Calman Ultimate software to map out the TV’s performance.

For gaming performance, we use a Leo Bodnar 4K Video Signal Lag Tester to measure exactly how responsive the TV really is. Once technical lab testing is done, we put the TV through subjective testing using a curated selection of films and shows. TCL QM7L review: Performance

To put the QM7L through its paces, I watched the UHD version of Dune Part 2, nature videos on YouTube, then Spider Noir and a replay of a NASCAR Cup Series race on Amazon Prime Video. Across every type of content, the QM7L impressed with brightness and color.

Dune: Part Two was the perfect test movie. While watching, I noticed how the desert sands of Arrakis were packed with fine detail, showing the QM7L’s ability to bring out subtle textures and warm golden hues. The natural-looking skin tones were also impressive — in desert scenes, many of the characters' orange sunlit faces retained lifelike color without looking overly warm.

Even though the movie frequently shifts between daylight and low-light environments, the QM7L handled the contrast and brightness well. The blacks in many darker interior scenes looked great and bright elements, like the beam of white light of swords during desert fights, still packed plenty of punch.

Next, I turned to streaming Spider-Noir on Amazon Prime. I previously watched this on the Samsung S85F OLED TV, and visually, the experience was quite close. The QM7L pushed out great blacks, especially in The Spider’s suit when he was hanging from a wall inside a hotel.

When watching the series in color, the TV didn’t lose the details in scenes that show off the series’ atmosphere: A dimly lit hotel room still had slight gray shadows, and reds looked vibrant in a neon sign against a black sky as The Spider was swinging in to steal from Silvermane’s safe under the cover of darkness. In later scenes, Cat Hardy’s green dress sparkled and shined, and so did her golden bangles — adding a sense of realism that made me think she was in the room with me.

For an SDR test, I watched a replay of Amazon Prime's NASCAR Cup Series race coverage from Pocono. I set the TCL QM7L to Vivid Mode, and its 3,167 nits of peak brightness in this mode made the broadcast look especially bright and colorful. Chase Elliott's blue and yellow NAPA Chevrolet stood out with bright colors. I could also clearly see the bright sunlight reflecting off Denny Hamlin's helmet during an in-car camera shot.

Finally, for a display bloom test, I watched a HDR video on YouTube that is specially designed for this. Watching normally from a few feet away, I didn’t immediately notice any blooming. It was present only in small momentary fireworks scene and visible only when I moved my seat to the corner of the panel. This panel on this TV is definitely good for the price, if you don’t go looking for the faults with a fine tooth comb.

TCL QM7L review: Test results

Lab results showed the TCL QM7L is a huge jump across the board in terms of brightness, and HDR color accuracy from its predecessor, the QM7K. The QM7L also matches or exceeds most similarly priced LED competitors in brightness while remaining competitive in color accuracy.

While not a lot of content is mastered for Rec 2020 yet, our lab’s measured Gamut Coverage shows why HDR on this TV looked so good. The QM7L hit 90.28% of the Rec 2020 gamut. That’s highest among TCL’s competitors; the U7 hit 82.75%, the Bravia 87.18, and the Samsung OLED 72.94%.

TCL claims this TV can cover 100% Rec 2020, but measurements can vary based on equipment used. Still, against every TV we’ve tested this year, only TCL’s own X11L scored higher in our labs, with 91.81% coverage.

With a measured HDR brightness of 2,270 nits, the QM7L lands second with its competitors. That even beats out the pricey true RGB Sony Bravia 7 II, and leaving Samsung’s most affordable 2026 OLED TV far behind — though those are all 65-inch models.

Overall, the QM7L delivered a bright, vibrant picture. Its measured Delta-E of 2.64 also points to a very good SDR color accuracy, third best amongst its competitors.

TCL QM7L review: Gaming

While the viewing experience on the TCL QM7L is impressive, so is the gaming. The TV measured 9.4 ms in our input lag tests which is no surprise, given all the features.

There’s support for AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). A long press of a button on the remote can bring up the Game Bar, which has several additional features like an aiming aid and a magnifier.

I do like how there’s a frame rate floating window, so you can keep up with how efficiently your game is running. During my time with the TV, I used this menu and also turned on HGIG and enabled high frame rate modes.

When playing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on our lab’s PlayStation 5, web swinging through Manhattan was smooth, maxing out at 119fps in the frame rate floating window. Same for Assassins Creed: Black Flag Resynced where in the ship battles in the opening scenes, despite wave crashes and my swaying the ship side by side, the game was still playing smoothly with minimal input lag.

TCL QM7L review: Sound

For audio testing, I watched the music video of Andrea Bocelli, David Guetta, EJAE and Megan Thee Stallion’s “DNA.” On this TV’s 2.2-channel Bang & Olufsen-tuned speaker system, this World Cup anthem sounded better than expected.

Bass had an energetic balance between vocals and the song’s EDM style beats. Things were surprisingly balanced for a built-in TV speaker system. Bocelli’s voice came through clearly, while the heavier electronic beats and Megan Thee Stallion’s verses had some thump and bop to it. The speakers sounded quite wide, too, so I don’t think you’ll need a soundbar here.

TCL QM7L review: Smart TV and remote

The TCL QM7L is powered by Google TV. Much like my experience with the Sony Bravia 7 II, I enjoyed the user interface. Getting through settings, looking for content with the included voice remote is clean and easy. Google Gemini for TV has a conversational style that helps surface my content easily, and the home screen isn’t full of ads unlike some of its competitors.

As for the remote, not much has changed from the previous QM7K — it still is plastic and black with a brushed finish. Buttons are relatively close together, and backlit. My favorite services have dedicated buttons on the remote, too, with access to Netflix, Prime Video, Netflix, Tubi, Disney, and FreeTV just a touch away.

TCL QM7L review: Verdict

The TCL QM7L has everything most people might look for in a good mid-range TV: It delivers bright HDR performance, a responsive gaming experience, and good speakers, at a competitive price of $1,500 (or less) when on sale. While it falls short of being the perfect TV due to some minor imperfections with blooming in some HDR scenes, it still is a smart buy.

There is some tough competition around this price point, however. There’s the aforementioned Hisense U7 that delivers similar performance for a competitive price. It’s not quite as adept at HDR content as the QM7L, but it does sound better (expect our full review soon). And at the very top of the RGB TV spectrum, the Sony Bravia 7 II is one of the very best LED TVs you can buy. Real enthusiasts seeking strict reference accuracy might prefer it, honestly.

In spite of some fierce competition, though, the TCL QM7L is one of the best mid-range TVs right now if you want a giant 75-inch screen and don’t want to spend over $2,000 on it.

Hulu is an excellent choice for building your next weekend movie marathon. The streaming service regularly adds both originals and classics to its library. Plus, because it's owned by Disney, it's the home for new releases from several Disney-owned studios. It even has deals with some other studios to get new releases before any other service, whether they're produced by Disney or not.

This weekend, I'm only picking movies that came out in the past 12 months. Some of these have never even been on a streaming service before, like "Busboys," the latest comedy from David Spade. "The Wizard of the Kremlin" is also getting its streaming debut this weekend, and stars Paul Dano as an influential government official in the early days of the Vladimir Putin administration. Finally, I've saved the best for last (at least, according to the critics). "Violent Ends" is a seriously gritty thriller, and you won't want to miss it now that it's on Hulu.

'Busboys' (2026)

Genre: Comedy

What's it about? Markie and "Steef" are not the smartest. In fact, they're idiots. So they decide to become busboys at a restaurant, thinking one day they'll become waiters, which will solve all their problems. Which, anyone who has ever worked in food service will tell you, is something only an idiot would think.

Why you should watch it: I'm not sure "Busboys" is any good. The trailer didn't exactly sell me. But it has some actors I like, including Chris Elliott, Bobby Lee and Jay Pharoah. Audiences seem to like it well enough, as well. It's currently rated 65% by them on Rotten Tomatoes.

'The Wizard of the Kremlin' (2026)

Genre: Political satire

What's it about? "The Wizard of the Kremlin" centers around Vadim Baranov (Paul Dano), a fictional character based on the very real Vladislav Surkov. He starts as a young artist in 1990s Russia but then transforms into an influential government official and spin doctor in the early days of Vladimir Putin's (Jude Law) government.

Why you need to watch it: Critics and audiences are equally tepid in their responses to this movie. But with a cast that includes Dano, Law, Alicia Vikander, Tom Sturridge and Jeffrey Wright, I'm willing to give it a shot. There's so much talent on the call sheet that I'm hopeful to at least not have a bad time, even if I'm not blown away.

'Violent Ends' (2025)

Genre: Gothic crime thriller

What's it about? "Violent Ends" stars Billy Magnussen as Lucas. Unlike the rest of his criminal family, Lucas tries to be an honest man. But an armed robbery gone wrong draws him into the family business, and that business is good ol' fashioned small-town violence.

Why you need to watch it: As someone from a small town that could easily be mistaken for the Northwestern Arkansas filming location of "Violent Ends," I'm a sucker for these types of crime thrillers. It's the same reason I love the show "Justified" so much. I know these types of people, so it's very easy to connect with. But it seems others have connected with the movie too. It's currently 68% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Paramount+ is a great streaming service if you're building a weekend movie marathon. It adds dozens of movies to the platform each month. It just added over 80 new movies and shows on August 1. Many of these are beloved classics or more modern hits. A few times a month, you also get brand-new movies from Paramount Skydance Studios.

This week, I'm taking things back to the 2000s. Kicking things off is "A.I: Artificial Intelligence," one of Steven Spielberg's several beloved science fiction films. Once you've finished that, let's keep things sci-fi adjacent with the found footage monster movie, "Cloverfield." That flick might leave you on edge, though. So once the credits roll, end your movie marathon with "The Hangover" and a laugh.

'A.I. Artificial Intelligence' (2001)

Genre: Science fiction

What's it about? This movie is set in a futuristic society and centers around David (Haley Joel Osment). He's an artificial child programmed with the ability to love. Intended as a surrogate son for Monica (Frances O'Connor) and Henry (Sam Robards), things get complicated once their real son (Jake Thomas) is unexpectedly cured of a possibly terminal disease.

Why you need to watch it: "Disclosure Day" has come and gone. So if you're looking for another Steven Spielberg sci-fi movie, check out "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence." It holds a unique place in Spielberg's canon; it was originally intended to be a Stanley Kubrick film until the iconic director handed it off to Spielberg in 1995.

'Cloverfield' (2008)

Genre: Found footage monster horror

What's it about? "Cloverfield" takes place on May 22, 2008. On that fateful day, a monster, later dubbed "LSA" (Large-Scale Aggressor) by the U.S. Department of Defense, attacked New York City. Using video found on a personal camcorder, this found-footage film recreates the night of the attack and centers itself around six friends as they attempt to flee the city.

Why you should watch it: "Cloverfield" is in the conversation for the best found-footage movie ever. It's a relic of its time, but the tension this movie creates and then executes on is brilliantly crafted. I'd probably still give the crown to "The Blair Witch Project," but this 2008 film has a serious case to make.

'The Hangover' (2009)

Genre: Comedy

What's it about? "The Hangover" stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis as Phil, Stu and Alan. They've taken their friend, Doug (Justin Bartha), to Las Vegas for his bachelor party. There's just one problem: they wake up the next day with no Doug and no memory of the previous night, and the wedding is set for later that day.

Why you should watch it: I think I saw this movie five times in theaters the year it came out, which was the summer before I went to college. I don't know that I've seen it since. It's time to rectify that this weekend.

It’s shaping up to be a great week for Netflix subscribers in the mood to watch some thriller movies. I’ve combed through the most recent additions to the streaming service, and also the new arrivals over the coming days, and picked out a trio of thrillers for your watchlist.

This week, my picks range from a new Netflix original movie that has been sitting pretty in the No. 1 spot for nearly a full week. But if the admittedly subpar reception puts you off, then there’s a couple of older, but still excellent, picks, including a dark mystery thriller from director David Fincher, the filmmaker behind “Fight Club, “Gone Girl” and “Seven.”

These are the new to Netflix thriller movies to consider watching this week, add th. Add your watchlist if you like movies full of adrenaline-raising moments, and maybe a twist or two.

3 new to Netflix thrillers to watch this week

‘The Last House’ (2026)

Netflix’s new sci-fi thriller “The Last House” has held the No. 1 spot since its debut last week. I was pretty mixed on the movie overall. In my review, I praised the opening hour, but felt the Netflix original falls apart in its second half.

While viewers are watching in large numbers, the response hasn’t been too positive. The movie has a poor 28% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, so be sure to keep your expectations in check if you decide to give it a shot this week.

Starring Oscar-nominee Wagner Moura and Greta Lee, “The Last House” focuses on a family of four who are suddenly trapped in their house by a mysterious rainfall that seals all the doors and windows. They can’t get out, and nothing can get in. As the days stretch to weeks, and then months, they are forced to take extreme action to survive, while also trying to uncover who (or what) is keeping them trapped inside their home.

‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ (2011)

2011’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is a bit of a unicorn. It’s a rare Hollywood remake of a foreign-language movie that actually surpasses the original, and in this writer’s eyes, is the definitive adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novel.

Maybe that was to be expected, after all, when you bring filmmaker extraordinaire David Fincher on board, the result is predictably high-quality. This neo-noir mystery thriller is absolutely gripping and spins a compelling tale of murder and dark family secrets in the snowy Swedish countryside.

Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) is a disgraced journalist who gets an unexpected shot at restoring his reputation when he’s hired by a wealthy industrialist, Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer), to investigate the disappearance of his grandniece, who went missing without a trace 40 years earlier.

Vanger is convinced his niece was killed by a member of his own family and wants answers. Blomkvist hires a troubled hacker, Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), to assist, and as the duo investigates the disappearance, they uncover truths far darker than ever expected.

‘The Shallows’ (2016)

It’s been a big year for shark movies, with flicks such as “Thrash,” “Deep Water,” and “The Devil’s Mouth” all swimming to streaming platforms in 2026. Frankly, none of these have been what I’d label quality watches, so if you’re on the hunt for a shark movie that is actually worth your time, step into “The Shallows.”

This survival thriller might be a decade old, but it still packs plenty of nerve-shredding moments and brings some emotional weight to the table with a lead character struggling with past trauma. This adds an extra wrinkle to an already intense thriller.

Nancy Adams (Blake Lively) is a med student, reeling from the recent death of her mother. Taking a trip to a secluded beach in Mexico, a sunny day of surfing becomes a battle for survival when Nancy becomes trapped just a couple hundred yards from the shore. Stranded on an isolated rock with a great white shark circling, she can see dry land, but actually reaching safety will require a whole lot of bravery and quick thinking.

Naturally, PSG go in as favourites, but they will know Villa can trouble them after the two sides split their Champions League quarter-final legs in 2024/25, with PSG ultimately progressing 5-4 on aggregate.

'Reacher' season 4 premiere (Prime Video)

Genre: Crime thriller series

What's it about? After Reacher witnesses a woman (Karen Kwong-Chip) die on a Philadelphia subway, he's hounded by police and the CIA. They all think the woman gave him a flash drive before she killed herself. Now, he, a Philadelphia cop (Tamara Green) and the woman's brother (Christopher Rodriguez Marquette) have to uncover the real reason everyone is after them, and why the woman took her own life.

Why you need to watch it: I reviewed the "Reacher" season 4 premiere for Tom's Guide, and I loved it. The show sticks to what made the past three seasons a success, and Alan Ritchson has never been more perfectly cast as the titular Jack Reacher.

'Ted Lasso' season 4 (Apple TV)

Genre: Sports comedy-drama series

What it's about: Coach Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) made a name for himself as a college football coach. But he stole hearts and minds as the misfit coach of Premier League club AFC Richmond. Now, he's back, but he's coaching the club's women's team.

Why you should watch it: I wasn't sure we needed a season 4 of "Ted Lasso." And I wasn't the only one. But it's won over most viewers according to Rotten Tomatoes, and it won us over in our "Ted Lasso" season 4 review.

'The Challenge: Cutthroat' season 42 (Paramount+)

Genre: Reality competition series

What's it about? "The Challenge: Cutthroat" brings back a classic format to the reality series, which is moving from MTV to Paramount+. 24 veterans and rookies are dropping into Thailand and are split into three teams. To win $500,000, the whole team has to cross the finish line. But each team's captain decides how the money is divided, and nothing stops them from keeping it all.

Why you should watch it: "The Challenge" is a reality show mainstay. It's arguably closer to a live sporting event than a reality show at this point, and as the competitors get more athletic, the line between this show and "Survivor" begins to blur. However, CBS's flagship competition show cannot match "The Challenge" for hookups and messy drama. I'll be watching this season like I do every other: eagerly.

"Reacher" season 4 just kicked off with a three-episode premiere on Prime Video. If you were worried the show has lost a step, don't be. It's the same "Reacher" as before, and that's a good thing.

Like a lot of great shows, and more than a few crime/spy thriller shows, "Reacher" suffers from a Catch-22. You get drawn into the show by a specific character, or group of characters, or the way it's paced, etc. It's like your favorite food: you don't want to deviate from the recipe. But if you don't put a new spin on the recipe, or branch out a bit, you might find that your once favorite food has suddenly turned stale.

"Reacher" certainly runs that risk, in no small part because the books the show is based on also follow a specific recipe. Given the popularity of both those books and the Prime Video adaptation, showrunner Nick Santora would be forgiven if he decided to simply stick to the script.

Unsurprisingly, that's what season 4 does. At least through three episodes. Yes, tonally, this show is a bit darker. Those who are sensitive to scenes portraying suicide might want to sit it out. But it ultimately holds to the recipe that made this show the ultimate "dadcore" thriller series. Get a big, strong, silent type. Make him clever and a bit funny when he talks. Let him get the girl without much trouble. Let him beat up bad guys along the way.

Luckily for Santora, Paramount (who co-produces) and Prime Video, the formula is still fresh. At least, it is for now. And that's almost entirely down to the performance of Alan Ritchson, who plays the titular former military police major with a thirst for justice.

Alan Ritchson is perfectly cast and it pays off big in season 4

Watching these three episodes, I couldn't get over how perfect Ritchson is for this role. It immediately made me think of the perfect pairing of Gary Oldman and Jackson Lamb in "Slow Horses," and I think it's time to declare Ritchson as Reacher an equally brilliant piece of casting.

For what it's worth, this season does have a plot. And it is a genuinely interesting one at that. The show starts with Reacher witnessing a woman, Anna (Karen Kwong-Chip), kill herself on a Philadelphia subway car. From then on, he's hounded by police, federal agents and the CIA, amongst others, as they all think he was given something by the woman before she died.

Aiding Reacher in the quest to discover what's really going on are the Philadelphia cop who arrived at the scene (Tamara Green), the woman's brother, Jacob (Christopher Rodriguez Marquette) and Russell (Kevin Weisman), a journalist who's been building an exposé on CIA black sites in the U.S. There's also Lila (Agnez Mo), a journalist from Indonesia trying to uncover some shady American activities of her own ... when she's not in a sudden fling with Reacher.

While that plot has kept me engaged and often on the edge of my seat, there's no denying that "Reacher" is all about ... well, Reacher. I can pretend I'm excited to see Kevin Corrigan show up as a jaded Philly cop. I can convince myself I'm curious about the show's B-plot about Anna's missing son (Denis Wong). But ultimately, I'm just waiting for Jack Reacher to do Jack Reacher things.

And that's okay, because Alan Ritchson is great at being Jack Reacher. Strong and silent? The man is built like a house. Clever and funny? At least once a scene. Gets the girl? By the end of the third episode, and with ease. And of course, he's constantly beating people up in well-executed action set pieces.

While that seems like an easy recipe to follow, Ritchson might be the only one who can put it all together. The more I watch, the more I'm convinced that only he is the right combination of smart, clever, self-confident but not cocky, and built like an NFL linebacker but doesn't look like a strongman competitor. Even action stars like Jason Statham and Keanu Reeves would be hard-pressed to tick all the boxes Ritchson does, even if I'd certainly argue they're the better stuntmen and martial artists on-screen.

Verdict: I already can't wait for episode 4

If you're someone who already watches "Reacher," you probably didn't need much convincing to stream season 4. Certainly, after reading all that praise, you've probably already queued it up on your television.

If you're not a "Reacher" fan yet, though, I definitely recommend checking it out. Unless you're truly allergic to action, this show has something for everyone. It also does a good job of featuring female protagonists alongside our titular hero ... even if some of them typically end up in bed with him at some point.

But, really, Ritchson's performance alone should be enough to keep you drawn in. I'm certainly already hooked and ready for episode 4 to come next week. Don't be afraid to start your "Reacher" fandom with this season, either. There's minor connective tissue between seasons, but they easily stand on their own as engaging television.

Genre: Comedy-drama movie

What's it about? Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen star as husband and wife, Angela and Joe. They've invited their neighbors, Pina (Penelope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton), over for dinner and drinks. But the night suddenly takes a turn, and now much, much more than just a cocktail is on offer for this foursome.

Why you need to watch it: "The Invite" is a textbook comedy-drama. In my review, I praised it for its ability to make you laugh, cry and cry from laughing. The casting is impeccable. Plus, Wilde gets to show off as a director while still putting in an incredible performance as one of the movie's leads. This is my second-best movie of 2026 so far and you need to watch it if you haven't yet.

'Mourinho' (Netflix)

Genre: Sports docuseries

What it's about: José Mourinho wasn't always known as "The Special One." He started as a journeyman footballer. But everything changed in 2002 when he took over at Porto. In two years, he took them from a struggling side to champions of Europe. Since then, he's won at Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Roma. He may be egomaniacal, but there's no denying he's special.

Why you should watch it: Pretty much every football fan knows who Mourinho is. He's never been shy, and given the high-profile clubs he's won at, he's earned his time in the spotlight. That said, I'm very curious to see what Zlatan Ibrahimović has to say about his former manager in this docuseries.

'Minions and Monsters' (2026) (PVOD)

Genre: Animated comedy movie

What's it about? Set before the events of "Minions," this third installment in the "Despicable Me" spin-off franchise takes us back to 1920s Hollywood. After millennia of searching for big bad bosses to work for, the Minions (Pierre Coffin) discover they're perfect for the world of silent film. However, everything turns to chaos when one of the Minions, James, unleashes a group of monsters on Los Angeles, possibly bringing about the apocalypse.

Why you need to watch it: In our review of "Minions and Monsters," I knocked it slightly for lacking the depth of its Pixar counterparts like "Toy Story 5." But you probably won't care. This animated adventure is undeniably funny, and you'll spend most of the 90 minutes laughing at the hijinks these yellow creatures get into.
