Genre: Romantic drama movie

What it's about: “Tyler Perry’s Doing Life” follows Anika (Naomi Baker), a single mother and former prison officer, who reconnects with Carousel (Jay Reeves), a reformed ex-convict who once saved her during a prison riot. As the pair develop an unexpected relationship, they face resistance from those around them while trying to build a new life together.

Why you should watch it: This film is worth watching for its emotional performances, particularly from Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves. Tyler Perry writes and directs, while the supporting cast adds plenty of familiar faces. ‘Evil Dead Burn’ (2026) (HBO Max)

Genre: Horror movie

What it's about: Alice (Souheila Yacoub) is a grieving widow who travels to her in-laws’ secluded home after her husband’s death. But the family reunion takes a horrifying turn when demonic forces possess them one by one, transforming the house into a blood-soaked fight for survival against an increasingly terrifying Deadite threat.

Why you should watch it: If you’re after horror that goes all-in on blood, gore and nasty practical effects, “Evil Dead Burn” should be on your Halloween watchlist. Sébastien Vaniček delivers several inventive, wince-inducing set pieces, while Souheila Yacoub leads a committed cast. ‘Coven Academy’ (series premiere) (Hulu)

Genre: Supernatural teen drama series

What it's about: Three teenage witches and their warlock classmates are at an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans. As they learn to control their powers, the students become caught up in ancient supernatural conflicts, dangerous secrets and forbidden romances, forcing them to protect their city while navigating the challenges of growing up.

Why you should watch it: “Coven Academy” offers a fast-paced supernatural mystery with witches, vampires, romance and plenty of secrets. Its short, bingeable chapters make it easy to fly through, while the New Orleans setting gives the series a suitably spooky atmosphere. Fans of “Wednesday,” “Charmed” and “The Vampire Diaries” may find plenty to enjoy.

"Saturday Night Live" is back for season 52, and while Chloe Fineman has left the show, there is lots of new talent on the roster plus familiar faces like Colin Jost and Kenan Thompson.

When teenagers Mike (Grant Cramer) and Debbie (Suzanne Snyder) watch a comet crash outside the town of Crescent Cove, they investigate and find a big-top spaceship full of murderous aliens that look just like circus clowns. The Klowns start harvesting the people in town and cocoon their victims in cotton candy. All of this is happening and nobody will believe the kids' warnings. And if you're sick of CGI slop in horror, you'll appreciate the practical effects.

'Wuthering Heights' (2026)

Few movies this year sparked as much argument as Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights," which sits at a divisive 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. The "Saltburn" director takes Emily Brontë's 1847 novel and ramps up the glossy, gothic style. Margot Robbie stars as the willful Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi is the brooding Heathcliff, two people whose all-consuming, destructive love tears apart everyone around them on the Yorkshire moors. You may love it, you may hate it. But one thing's for sure: you won't forget this take on the classic.

‘Scream 7' (2026)

Neve Campbell returns to this classic horror franchise as Sidney Prescott, who's pulled out of hiding when a new Ghostface sets its sights on her daughter. This installment leans hard into nostalgia for the rest of the movies, even going so far as to resurrect familiar faces whose characters didn't necessarily make it out of earlier entries alive. If you're a longtime fan of the series, it's a bloody, referential good time no matter what the reviews say.

Paramount+ is kicking off October 2026 strong by adding 72 new movies and shows to its platform. As is custom, the streaming service adds the bulk of its buzzy new titles on the first of every month, a laundry list of worthy series and films to pad out your month of binge-watching ahead.

But all of that choice can be overwhelming, so we here at Tom's Guide have done the dirty work for you, sifting out all of those selections to a more manageable trio of titles that we think you should check out. The first is the ultimate fall rom-com, "When Harry Met Sally," an annual rewatch that has become more poignant lately, what with the recent passing of its beloved director Rob Reiner.

But if you're after something less sweet and more sinister (we are officially in spooky season, folks!), the streamer also has plenty of thrillers and chillers arriving this month, including 2019's groundbreaking Oscar winner "Parasite" and 2009's gross-out throwback "Drag Me to Hell."

Genre: Romantic comedy

What's it about: We know you've probably watched it a thousand times (guilty!), but just in case: Billy Crystal is Harry Burns and Meg Ryan is Sally Albright, two lovable but cynical acquaintances who have differing opinions about whether or not men and women can remain strictly platonic friends without sex or romance getting in the way. Over twelve years of respective relationships, dating advice, and late-night phone calls, their friendship grows complicated when unexpected feelings arise.

Why you should watch it: There's a reason "When Harry Met Sally..." is widely considered the greatest romantic comedy of all time — it really is that good, with sensational chemistry between its two iconic leads, an ever-quotable script from the inimitable Nora Ephron, and warm, savvy direction from Rob Reiner. Plus, nothing gets us more ready for autumn than seeing Billy Crystal in that cable-knit fisherman's sweater.

'Parasite' (2019)

Genre: Thriller/comedy

What's it about? Bong Joon Ho's modern-day Korean fairytale (or cautionary tale) centers on the substantial class and social divide between the Kims (a struggling, unemployed family of four living in a cramped Seoul basement, barely hanging on with low-end odd jobs and janky WiFi) and the Parks (an affluent foursome made up of a tech-CEO husband, a socialite wife and their two pampered children). When the Kims infiltrate the Parks' luxurious household by posing as unrelated workers (school tutor, private driver, etc.), they discover dark secrets hidden beneath that shiny facade.

Why you should watch it: "Parasite" became the first foreign-language film ever to take home the coveted Oscar for Best Picture, and that distinction was certainly deserved: Bong Joon Ho's expertly crafted thriller layers black comedy, capitalistic satire, crime caper, and family drama, all while delivering some serious scares along the way.

'Drag Me to Hell' (2009)

Genre: Horror/Mystery

What's it about? Director Sam Raimi knows how to give us the creeps — he's behind the "Evil Dead" trilogy, the Cate Blanchett-led "The Gift" and this year's "Send Help" — and this 2009 supernatural-horror standout is no exception. Alison Lohman stars as Christine Brown, a bank loan officer who, after refusing to extend an old woman's mortgage, is placed under a retaliatory curse that threatens to, you guessed it, drag her soul into the depths of Hell.

Why you should watch it: A winning combination of gross-out body horror, campy slapstick and genuine scares has earned Raimi's bloody B-movie cult-favorite status in the decades since its release. Why you should watch it: “East of Eden” looks like one of Netflix’s standout new releases. Why you should watch it: Now that we’re officially in October, Ari Aster’s “Hereditary” is one horror movie I’d definitely make time for this Halloween. Toni Collette is incredible in the lead role, giving a seriously intense performance as a family begins to experience increasingly disturbing events following a devastating loss. It’s the kind of horror movie that slowly gets under your skin rather than relying on constant jump scares. If you want something genuinely disturbing for spooky season, this is an easy recommendation.

‘War’ (2026) (HBO Max)

Genre: Legal drama-thriller series

What it's about: “War” follows two rival London law firms battling over a high-profile divorce between tech mogul Morgan Henderson (Dominic West) and international film star Carla Duval (Sienna Miller). As ambitious young lawyer Jonathan “Johnny” Warren (Archie Renaux) enters the fray, the case draws lawyers into a ruthless world of professional rivalries, personal betrayals and increasingly high-stakes legal battles.

Why you should watch it: Created by George Kay, the writer behind “Lupin,” HBO Max’s “War” looks like a pretty gripping legal drama. Before he became a horror heavyweight with the Oscar-nominated success of this year’s “Weapons,” Zach Cregger wrote and directed this 2022 spine-chiller, starring Georgina Campbell as Tess Marshall, a young woman traveling to Detroit for a job interview who discovers that the rental home she was meant to stay in is double-booked and is occupied by a strange man named Keith (Bill Skarsgård). Against her better judgment, she agrees to split the house for the night with the male guest, only to discover that even scarier secrets lurk inside the Airbnb.

Why you need to watch it: Tom's Guide's own Alyse Stanley called Cregger's film "one of the most captivating horror movies I've seen in years" and "the perfect lead-up to Halloween." And it seems other critics are in hearty agreement: "Barbarian" has a stellar 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes: "Smart, darkly humorous, and above all scary, Barbarian offers a chilling and consistently unpredictable thrill ride for horror fans," reads the site's critical consensus.

'The Substance' (2024)

Genre: Horror/sci-fi

What's it about? Demi Moore had a deserved career resurgence for her fierce and fearless lead performance in "The Substance," earning a Best Actress nod for playing fading, fifty-something Hollywood star Elisabeth Sparkle, who, after being fired by her producer (Dennis Quaid) due to her age, uses a black-market drug that creates a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley) with unexpected side effects.

Why you should watch it: A stomach-churning and seriously effective satire on how society and the entertainment industry devalue women as they age, Coralie Fargeat's "The Substance" is the rare body-horror title to strike big with major awards committees like the Oscars, where the film earned five nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

'Midsommar' (2019)

Genre: Horror/Mystery

What's it about? In an already busy 2019 ("Fighting with My Family" and "Little Women"), Florence Pugh managed to fit in this Swedish-set folk-horror film, directed by "Hereditary" filmmaker Ari Aster (who knows a thing or two about freaking us out). Pugh stars opposite Jack Raynor as one-half of a young American couple who travels to the remote, fictional commune of Hårga to attend Sweden's midsummer festival. That festive trip, however, soon descends into psychological terror as the duo is drawn into a violent cult.

Why you need to watch it: A deliciously disturbing watch that subverts traditional horror expectations, Aster's "Midsommar" finds plenty of freaky inspiration in everyday emotions, from personal grief to toxic romances. It certainly polarized audiences when it came out nearly a decade ago, but was otherwise a hit with critics, who called it "ambitious, impressively crafted, and above all unsettling," per Rotten Tomatoes.

Now’s a great time to be looking for thriller movies on Netflix. On October 1, the streaming service added almost 50 movies to its library, and I’ve combed through the full list to pick out a trio of thrillers worthy of your watchlist.

My picks this week include a mystery thriller in which Tom Hanks unravels a centuries-old conspiracy. Or how about a gritty spy game featuring Matt Damon’s first performance as the iconic Jason Bourne. Alternatively, if you’re in a Halloween mood, I’ve found an intense horror-thriller that is on the shorter side, but packs in plenty of scares.

‘The Da Vinci Code’ (2006)

Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code” was a literary phenomenon when it was published in the early 2000s, and just a few years later, Hollywood fast-tracked a movie adaptation starring Tom Hanks. The movie was controversial for its portrayal of the Catholic church. Still, it went on to become a major hit, ranking as the second highest-grossing movie of 2006. It’s packed with twists, even if the runtime feels bloated.

Expert American symbologist Robert Langdon (Hanks) is called upon by the French police to help solve a bizarre ritualistic murder in Paris. Working with a cryptographer, Sophie (Audrey Tautou), Langdon discovers a series of clues on the victim’s body that point towards a centuries-old secret society. But when he’s framed for the crime, Langdon and Sophie go on the run, while also trying to solve a series of ciphers that could reveal long-buried secrets.

‘The Bourne Identity’ (2002)

This month, Netflix has become the streaming home of the Jason Bourne franchise. The platform now offers the complete series, including the original trilogy and the two subsequent sequels. Things begin with 2002’s “The Bourne Identity,” a fantastic thriller that was noteworthy at the time for being a more grounded alternative to the James Bond franchise, which in the early 2000s had jumped the shark and gone far too silly.

I have my issues with the latter two Bourne films, but the initial trilogy is excellent. “Identity” in particular is a great franchise starter, introducing viewers to Matt Damon’s superspy, who begins the movie being pulled from the ocean with two bullets in his back. Unable to recall his past or even name, he starts a quest for answers, which brings him into conflict with a shadowy CIA organization. Be sure to watch “The Bourne Supremacy” and “The Bourne Ultimatum” after.

‘Hush’ (2016)

Mike Flanagan is the master of horror television, having helmed Netflix’s “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Midnight Mass,” and the upcoming “Carrie” show for Prime Video. However, he’s also a pro when it comes to filmmaking; see 2016’s “Hush” as proof. This dark thriller is extremely lean, running just 80 minutes, and using nearly every minute of its runtime to keep the high-stakes tension flowing. It’s a real heart-in-mouth watch. Perfect for Halloween season.

Maddie Young (Kate Siegel) is a reclusive author who lost the ability to hear and speak as a teenager. Living in a remote home, she becomes the target of a sadistic masked killer, who uses her inability to hear to his advantage to enact a twisted campaign of terror. “Hush” is a home invasion horror-thriller that will have you hooked until the final moments.

‘The Bourne Identity’ (2002)

What's it about? A group of Italian fishermen pull a bullet-ridden body from the water and are stunned to discover the man (Matt Damon) is still alive. As he pieces together his identity, he becomes the target of a shadowy CIA organization, Treadstone, which dispatches agents to capture him.

Why you should watch it: Netflix is adding the whole Bourne series on October 1, and naturally, “The Bourne Identity” is the place to start. Almost 25 years on, it remains a thrilling spy flick, and was a much-needed gritty answer to James Bond, which at the time was mired in silly sequels with ropey 2000s special effects. The original Bourne trilogy, also comprising “The Bourne Supremacy” and “The Bourne Ultimatum,” makes for a great weekend movie marathon.

‘Ad Astra’ (2019)

‘Lego One Piece’ (2026) (Netflix)

Genre: Animated action-adventure special

What it's about: This two-part animated special retells the first two seasons of Netflix’s live-action “One Piece” in Lego form. Narrated by Usopp, the story follows Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and the Straw Hat Pirates as they travel across the East Blue and into the dangerous Grand Line, battling pirates, Marines and other enemies while searching for the legendary One Piece treasure.

Why you should watch it: If you’re a “One Piece” fan, this is a fun excuse to revisit the Straw Hats’ biggest adventures in a completely different format. The two-part special packs the first two seasons into roughly an hour, with Lego recreations, plenty of comedy, action and the returning live-action cast providing the voices.

‘Coyote vs. Acme’ (2026) (PVOD)

Genre: Live-action/animated adventure comedy movie

What it's about: “Coyote vs. Acme” follows Wile E. Coyote (Eric Bauza) after years of failed ACME products leave him battered and frustrated in his pursuit of the Road Runner. He teams up with struggling lawyer Kevin Avery (Will Forte) and his niece Paige (Lana Condor) to sue the corporation, taking on ACME’s powerful attorney Buddy Crane (John Cena) in court.

Why you should watch it: Any Looney Tunes lover should have “Coyote vs. Acme” on their watchlist. The live-action/animated hybrid comedy brings Wile E. Coyote’s classic slapstick antics into a courtroom story, with Will Forte and John Cena adding plenty of comedic energy. ‘Lisa Frankenstein’ (2024) (Peacock)

Genre: Romantic horror comedy movie

What it's about: In 1989, misunderstood teenager Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton) spends much of her time at a local cemetery, where she becomes fascinated by the grave of a Victorian-era man (Cole Sprouse). After a freak lightning strike resurrects his corpse, Lisa secretly brings him home. The pair soon embark on a bizarre journey involving romance, murder and missing body parts as Lisa helps rebuild him.

Why you should watch it: Anyone looking for something a little quirky and offbeat should check out “Lisa Frankenstein” on Peacock. Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse make an entertaining pairing, while the movie leans into its colorful 1980s setting, gothic visuals and deliberately silly humor. It’s also written by Diablo Cody, the writer behind “Jennifer’s Body” and “Juno.”

Netflix’s top 10 TV shows list is always changing, which can make it tricky to figure out what’s actually worth adding to your watchlist. There are plenty of options competing for your attention right now, from returning crime dramas and mystery thrillers to brand-new releases that have quickly climbed the rankings. If you’re looking for something to binge this week, I’ve picked out three shows from Netflix’s current top 10 that deserve a spot on your watchlist.

There’s a nostalgic comedy bringing viewers back to a familiar college campus with a new generation of students, a dark true crime drama revisiting one of America’s most infamous murder cases, and a twisty mystery that strands a group of guests at a remote hotel after a suspicious death. They’re very different shows, but each offers something that should make your next Netflix binge a little easier to choose.

‘A Different World’

“A Different World” is a 10-episode sequel series that arrived on Netflix exactly 39 years after the original NBC sitcom first premiered in 1987, and it’s already made a big impression with viewers. Produced by original series visionary Debbie Allen alongside Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood and showrunner Felicia Pride, the new series brings the beloved HBCU sitcom into a new era. Unlike the multi-camera format of the original, the 2026 revival uses a single-camera setup, giving it a more modern and cinematic feel while still keeping a connection to the show that came before it.

The sequel returns to Hillman College, where freshman Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, begins her college journey. As she settles into campus life, she forms friendships with a new group of students who help her feel comfortable. Deborah also has to deal with the expectations that come with being the daughter of two Hillman alumni while trying to establish herself on her own terms. Alongside the new students, several familiar faces from the original series return, connecting the new generation to Hillman’s past.

‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’

“Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” is the fourth installment in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s hit “Monster” anthology series on Netflix. It takes the franchise into the 19th century for the first time and also marks its first season centered on a woman. The series puts its own spin on the infamous Lizzie Borden case, bringing together Victorian gothic horror, family drama and some darker moments of humor rather than simply retelling the events as a traditional true crime drama. It’s a pretty different direction for the “Monster” series, but one that makes this season stand out.

Lizzie Borden (Ella Beatty) is a young woman living with her wealthy family in 1890s Massachusetts. Trapped in a difficult household with her strict stepmother Abby (Rebecca Hall), Lizzie finds an unexpected ally in Maggie (Vicky Krieps), a new maid who arrives at the family home. As their relationship grows closer, the pair begin plotting against those who have mistreated them. Soon, Lizzie’s father Andrew (Charlie Hunnam) and stepmother Abby wind up dead, setting off an investigation and a sensational trial.

‘The Final Problem’

If you’re a fan of a good mystery, “The Final Problem” is one to add to your watchlist this week. This Spanish four-episode limited series is a stylish take on the classic whodunit, with plenty of inspiration from Agatha Christie and old-school mystery movies. It isn’t a direct Sherlock Holmes adaptation, though. Instead, the story follows a retired actor who became famous for playing Sherlock Holmes and suddenly finds himself having to use those detective skills in a real-life mystery. If you enjoyed movies like “Knives Out” or “And Then There Were None,” this could be the perfect pick.

In 1959, thirteen people become stranded on a small island near Mallorca when a violent storm cuts them off from the mainland. When English tourist Elisa Mander is found dead at their hotel, what initially appears to be suicide is soon revealed to be murder. Retired actor Benjamin Basil (José Coronado), who once played Sherlock Holmes on screen, finds himself investigating the death. With nobody able to leave the island and every guest and member of staff a potential suspect, Basil searches the secluded hotel for answers.

I’ve always appreciated that Prime Video respects the classics. More than any of its rivals, the Amazon-owned platform adds a steady clip of yesteryear favorites, and this month the list includes “The Great Escape.” This 1963 epic starring Steve McQueen is iconic for both its breathtaking motorcycle chase sequence — remember this was created before the days of CGI — and its earworm theme tune, which you’re probably humming to yourself right now.

In “The Great Escape,” McQueen plays Captain Virgil Hilts, an American POW known as “The Cooler King” for his habit of getting thrown into solitary confinement. Set during World War II in a German prisoner of war camp under the watch of Colonel von Luger (Hannes Messemer), a group of Allied soldiers plots a daring escape that involves digging three underground tunnels to crawl to freedom. Alongside McQueen, the classic stars James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson and Donald Pleasence.

‘Atomic Blonde’ (2017)

Director David Leitch helms this stylish action-thriller that mixes the one-man-army action highs of “John Wick” with a well-realized 1980s Berlin setting; specifically, it’s set in November 1989, just days before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Also, the figure blasting through scores of assailants is no man. Instead, “Atomic Blonde” stars Charlize Theron, playing a skilled MI6 agent, Lorraine Broughton. And she’s every bit as lethal as a certain Mr. Wick.

Broughton is dispatched to Berlin, a city on the cusp of being reunited, to retrieve a watch stolen by a KGB agent. But this timepiece is more than a fancy accessory; it holds the name of every active intelligence agent in Berlin, so its return is of paramount importance. Once on the scene, Lorraine links up with a fellow MI6 agent, Percival (James McAvoy), and is drawn into a dangerous spy game where the line between friend and foe blurs.

‘Collateral’ (2004)

Michael Mann delivered an enduring ultra-cool thriller in the genre classic “Heat,” but his 2004 effort “Collateral” shouldn’t be overlooked either. Starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, the latter securing an Oscar nomination for his performance, it’s an intense crime movie in which an ordinary man finds himself dragged into an increasingly murky situation. And it gives the usually heroic Cruise a chance to flex his acting muscles as a memorable villain.

Max (Foxx) is an L.A. cab driver whose evening takes a dramatic twist when he picks up a passenger named Vincent (Cruise). Initially, Max believes he’s driving Vincent to a series of business meetings. However, it’s revealed the passenger is actually a hit man, in the city to eliminate a series of high-profile targets. It’s up to Max to find a way to stop him. Elevated beyond its simplistic setup by two strong performances, “Collateral” is slickly crafted and does a great job ratcheting up the stakes across its two-hour runtime.

This week’s slate of top new movies across the best streaming services has been confirmed, and there’s a little something for everyone with new options on Netflix, HBO Max, Apple TV, digital streaming and more.

This week sees October, aka the spookiest month, arrive, so naturally we can expect a slew of horror movies over the next few weeks. We’re starting strong with the arrival of “Evil Dead Burn” on HBO Max, and “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” on MUBI. Or if you’re after something a little less bloody, the family-friendly animated flick “Coyote vs. Acme” drops on digital, or you can enjoy Tyler Perry’s latest Netflix movie, the romantic drama “Doing Life.”

You don’t need to waste time scrolling through streaming libraries trying to find the latest releases; I’ve rounded up the most noteworthy new additions across platforms below. Plus, if you’re in the mood for binge-watching, we have a guide for the top TV shows this week, too.

‘Coyote vs. Acme" (PVOD)

“Coyote vs. Acme” is one of the year’s biggest movie success stories. The animated comedy set in the world of Looney Tunes was shelved by Warner Bros. in 2023 for tax write-off purposes, even though it was virtually finished. Following online backlash, it was acquired by Ketchup Entertainment and released in theaters over the summer, where it was a modest financial success and a critical smash hit, scoring a near-perfect 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Clearly, this was a movie worth saving, and it looks set for further success now that it’s arriving on digital streaming. Taking a meta approach to its cartoon world and characters, the family comedy sees a fed-up Wile E. Coyote hire a personal injury lawyer (Will Forte) to sue Acme, the in-universe manufacturer of all sorts of dangerous items, from anvils to bombs, for years of selling faulty products that always backfire on him. It’s a very funny idea, well executed!

‘Evil Dead Burn’ (HBO Max)

This week will see the calendar change over to October, signalling the official start of Spooky Season. Expect to see plenty of new horror movies across the best streaming services, and HBO Max is kicking off the month with the latest installment in the “Evil Dead” franchise. “Burn” is perhaps the most gruesome and grim “Evil Dead” yet. It’s certainly not a movie for the squeamish. But if you can handle buckets of fake blood, it’s a well-timed seasonal watch.

After the death of her abusive husband, Alice (Souheila Yacoub) is in a state of conflicted grief. After a somber cremation service, she travels to the secluded home of her in-laws. Here, the already tense family dynamic becomes even darker when demonic forces are unleashed. The house becomes a survival battleground. Largely shedding the series' trademark tension-cutting humor, “Evil Dead Burn” opts for a more twisted approach.

‘The Last First: Winter K2’ (Apple TV)

If you go by Rotten Tomatoes’ scores, then “The Last First: Winter K2” is the obvious top pick of the bunch this week. The documentary holds a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and while this rating is more common with documentaries, it’s nevertheless noteworthy and should draw in viewers. It sounds like a very worthwhile watch, but I have to note that “The Last First: Winter K2” is definitely one of the worst movie names of 2026.

Directed by Amir Bar-Lev, “The Last First: Winter K2” chronicles the efforts of a team of expert mountaineers to make the first successful winter ascent of K2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen, the second-highest mountain on Earth. But this is more than just a tale of remarkable human achievement; it also explores how ambition and ego can be as lethal as the toughest of mountain conditions, and how the climbing landscape is rapidly changing.

‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ (MUBI)

Director Jane Schoenbrun absolutely floored me with 2024’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” a remarkable psychological horror that leaves a heavy imprint. The director’s follow-up, “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” is a similarly absorbing ride, a horror movie laced with satire, subtext and even romance. Its clever commentary on horror movie tropes is appealing, but it's the layered exploration of self-discovery that really sets it apart.

Kris Williams (Hannah Einbinder) is a young filmmaker hired to reboot the “Camp Miasma” franchise, which was once a celebrated slasher series but has faded in relevance after years of subpar sequels. Her pitch involves casting Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson), who starred in the original movie, and now lives at the abandoned camp where the films were shot. Taking a trip to visit Billy and convince the reclusive actress to reprise her role, Kris becomes enhanced by Billy, and the two slip into a surreal world of blood and lust.

‘Tyler Perry’s Doing Life’ (Netflix)

Tyler Perry is one of Netflix’s most reliable and productive collaborators. Even if his work isn’t always critically acclaimed, it always seems to strike a chord with subscribers. This year alone, Perry’s Netflix projects have included “Joe’s College Road Trip” and “Why Did I Get Married Again?” Next up is “Doing Life,” a romantic drama inspired by “the idea that sometimes the people we least expect can understand each other in ways no one else can," says Perry.

Starring Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves, and written and directed by Perry. In “Doing Life,” a single mother and correctional officer (Baker) develops a strong bond with a reformed ex-convict (Reeves), who previously saved her life during a violent prison riot. The jury is out on the movie’s critical reception, but this is a case where the reviews likely don’t matter; Perry’s dedicated fanbase will no doubt support the film, pushing it up the Netflix top 10.

Genre: Animated sci-fi comedy series

What it's about: “Futurama” season 14 continues the adventures of Fry, Leela, Bender and the Planet Express crew, with the gang tackling everything from space pirates and lab-grown meat to time travel and alternate universes. The season mixes standalone sci-fi adventures with returning characters and storylines, culminating in Fry and his brother facing surprising consequences from their childhood.

Why you should watch it: Season 14 is worth watching for the show’s trademark mix of clever sci-fi ideas, absurd comedy and memorable characters. I track streaming service top 10 lists every week, and can attest first-hand that sometimes less-than-worthwhile watches find their way into the rankings. ‘The Love Hypothesis’ (2026)

Prime Video’s feature film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s best-selling novel has made a strong connection with subscribers. The Prime Video original released last week (on Sept. 23) and rocketed straight to the No. 1 spot in the platform’s top 10. It’s remained there over the weekend, and it’s the perfect pick if you need some rom-com charm to chase away the Monday blues. Though you will have to tolerate the movie’s oddly washed-out color palette.

Olive (Reinhart) is a gifted PhD student who, in an effort to prove to her best friend (Rachel Marsh) that she’s over her crush (Nicholas Duvernay), kisses a professor, Adam (Tom Bateman). This spirals into a whole fake relationship, with rules and boundaries set in advance. But you know how these things go in rom-coms! Before long, the pair’s pretend romance blossoms into the real thing, putting their theories about love to the ultimate test.

‘Masters of the Universe' (2026)

“Masters of the Universe” proves that box office bombs can find a second wind on streaming services. The fantasy blockbuster flopped in theaters, failing to recoup its eye-watering $170 million, but has found a very receptive audience on Prime Video. It’s been a permanent fixture in the top 10 chart for more than a month, and He-Man fans clearly like what they’re seeing, as the movie holds a strong 86% viewer score on review site Rotten Tomatoes.

Based on the beloved Mattel toy range, which was initially created to compete with a rival’s lineup of popular “Star Wars” action figures, “Masters of the Universe” follows Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine), who is sent to Earth as a child when his home of Eternia is conquered by the ruthless Skeletor (Jared Leto). Years later, now a fully grown adult, he must return to the fantastical setting to fulfil his destiny and become the legendary warrior He-Man.

‘Rust’ (2024)

“Rust” is a 2024 Western starring Alec Baldwin, infamous for an on-set accident that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins when live rounds were fired from a prop revolver. This tragedy overshadowed the movie, paused production, and led to numerous lawsuits. Eventually, filming resumed, and the movie was finished, but it’s hard to separate the sad story behind this one from the events depicted on screen.

“Rust” chronicles the tale of two adolescent boys forced to fend for themselves in 19th-century Wyoming after their parents' deaths. When the older sibling, Lucas (Patrick Scott McDermott), accidentally kills somebody while hunting, he’s sentenced to death. But before his sentence can be carried out, Lucas’ estranged grandfather, an infamous outlaw named Harland Rust (Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and the two flee to the Mexican border. Given what happened on the set, the story revolving around an accidental killing feels a little unsettling. Appropriately, the final film is dedicated to the memory of Halyna Hutchins.

‘The Bourne Identity’

What it's about: Fishermen pull a bullet-ridden body from the ocean and are stunned to discover the man (Matt Damon) is still alive. Setting off on a journey to unfog his memory, he is targeted by a secretive agency that wants him dead.

Why you should watch it: Netflix is adding the complete Jason Bourne collection at the start of October. Later sequels are fairly lackluster, but the initial Bourne trilogy remains excellent. It was a grittier espionage alternative to the camp tone of the Bond franchise at the time (“Identity” released the same year as the panned “Die Another Day”). “The Bourne Identity” kicks off the series in some style, introducing Damon’s iconic hero.

'Tyler Perry’s Doing Life'

What it's about: Tyler Perry’s latest Netflix project is “Doing Life,” a romantic drama movie starring Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves. Perry writes and directs, and the flick sees a single mother, who once worked as a prison officer (Baker), form an unexpected bond with a reformed ex-convict (Reeves), who previously saved her life during a violent prison riot.

Why you should watch it: I've referred to Terry Perry as “the streaming whisper” in the past because the actor/filmmaker seems to have a strong grasp on what viewers want. Even when his projects aren’t critically acclaimed, subscribers flock to them. “Doing Life” also marks his third Netflix movie of 2026 after “Why Did I Get Married Again?” and “Joe’s College Road Trip.” It’s not the last either; Perry has a holiday movie due later this year.

When it comes to deciding what to watch, it can get overwhelming. Fast. There are so many options out there. Even if you keep it to just the best streaming services, there are dozens of new shows and movies added every day. Lucky for you, it's my job to know exactly what's out there. So I've compiled a TV guide on what to watch tonight.

2026 MTV Video Music Awards (Paramount+)

One of the music industry's biggest and most-watched annual awards show kicks off tonight: the MTV Video Music Awards. This year's VMAs will be hosted by Snoop Dogg and open with the first VMAs performance from Madonna in 23 years. Between her 11 nominations and Taylor Swift’s nine for "The Life of a Showgirl," they're the two artists to watch this evening.

But while plenty of viewers tune in to see who takes home the iconic “Moonman” statuettes, the red carpet is just as much a part of the fun. Every year, the VMAs bring out plenty of glamorous and downright unforgettable looks as celebrities strut the step-and-repeat red carpet each year.

Lanterns season 1 (HBO Max)

Genre: Superhero flick meets old-fashioned buddy action comedy

What's it about? Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre star as Green Lanterns from different generations in this acclaimed eight-episode DC drama. The age gap creates a fun "kids these days" dynamic between their characters, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Veteran Lantern Jordan is stuck with mentoring rookie recruit Stewart as the pair sets out to solve a murder in the heartland. But this a superhero show, after all, so any murder mystery worth its salt is gonna take a cosmic turn at some point.

Why you should watch it: I've been living under a rock when it comes to the DC heroes, but between the tour de force of Aaron Pierre and series co-creator Damon Lindelof, the mind behind HBO's incredible "Watchmen" show, and all the praise my coworkers have been shoveling onto this show, I was finally convinced to take the plunge. And I'm happy I did. This week is the last episode before the finale, so there's still time to catch up.

‘A Tale of Two Cities' (MGM+)

Genre: Historical drama limited series

What it's about: Set in London in 1782, "A Tale of Two Cities" follows Lucie Manette (Mirren Mack), who discovers that her long-thought-dead father may be alive after all. But when the messenger who brings her this news, Charles Darnay (François Civil), gets arrested, she turns to troubled lawyer Carton (Kit Harington) for help. Together, they set out to free Charles and resume her search for her father as the French Revolution builds too a fever pitch around them.

Why you should watch it: Reviews so far have been pretty positive for the first small-screen adaptation of Charles Dickens' seminal novel in almost four decades. It's got an 86% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and this week's the last episode before the finale. It has all the hallmarks of a classic Dickens tale: a colorful cast of characters, tantalizing cliffhangers, and sharp social commentary.
