There’s no better time to settle in with a new show than the middle of September. The evenings are getting colder, the days are getting shorter, and we’re heading towards that time of year when staying in with a good binge-watch becomes even more appealing. If you’re not sure where to start, Prime Video’s top 10 shows is a pretty good place to look, giving you a snapshot of what everyone else is watching right now.

Of course, not everything that lands in a streamer’s top 10 is necessarily worth adding to your watchlist. That’s where I come in. I’ve picked out three shows from Prime Video’s current top 10 that I think are worth binge-watching this week, including the fourth and final season of a hit action-thriller about a former military investigator, a new fantasy series inspired by Arthurian legend and the wizard Merlin, and a motoring series that sees three longtime friends take on another round of ridiculous road trips.

‘Reacher’

The No. 1 show on Prime Video right now is obviously “Reacher,” and it’s held onto that spot since its fourth season debuted in August. But today marks the season finale, meaning anyone who was waiting for the full season to arrive before binge-watching no longer has to wait. There’s also no better time for the action-thriller to wrap up its latest season, as today also marks the release of its spinoff series, “Neagley,” which follows the titular character as she investigates a suspicious death linked to her past.

“Reacher” follows Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson), a former U.S. Army military policeman who travels from place to place, often finding himself caught up in dangerous criminal investigations. Using his investigative skills and physical strength, he gets pulled into increasingly complicated cases involving powerful enemies and works to uncover the truth. Based on Lee Child’s bestselling novels, each season adapts a different story from the book series. Season 4 is based on Gone Tomorrow and sees Reacher drawn into a deadly mystery after a chance encounter with a distressed stranger on public transport.

‘Rise of the Merlin’

“The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin” is a seven-episode historical fantasy epic produced by the Daily Wire for its streaming platform. Adapted from Stephen R. Lawhead’s celebrated six-book fantasy novel series “The Pendragon Cycle,” it reimagines the King Arthur and Merlin mythology through the lens of early post-Roman Britain, while also bringing in elements of Atlantean lore. It’s been compared to Prime Video’s big-budget shows like “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and “The Wheel of Time” for its strong emphasis on fantasy and action.

Set in Britain during the final years of Roman rule, “The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin” follows Merlin (Tom Sharp), the son of the bard Taliesin and Princess Charis, from his childhood into adulthood. As Britain becomes increasingly divided and faces attacks from invading forces, Merlin grows up amid political upheaval and violence before eventually finding himself drawn into the struggles of rival kings. After years spent away from his homeland, he returns to a fractured Britain and becomes involved in the fight to unite its kingdoms.

‘The Grand Tour’

“The Grand Tour” marks a complete soft reboot of Prime Video’s flagship motoring franchise. Following the departure of original hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, the series recently returned with a brand-new hosting lineup while keeping its cinematic travel-adventure format. Thomas Holland and James Engelsman are the Canadian duo behind the popular YouTube automotive channel Throttle House, while Francis Bourgeois, the internet personality, trainspotter and mechanical enthusiast, joins them as the third host.

This reboot sees the new presenting trio take over the wheel for a fresh set of global motoring adventures. Across six episodes, the hosts travel to locations including California, Singapore, Malaysia, Colorado, Belgium and Angola, putting an eclectic selection of cars through unusual tests and challenges. The series features everything from high-performance supercars and tiny Japanese Kei cars to classic vehicles and inexpensive sports cars. There are also plenty of races, including a desert adventure in Angola and a race between a hypercar and a train.

"Reacher" season 4 has been a wild ride. The season 4 premiere was great, and then came some serious twists and turns. But with today's season 4 finale, everything wraps up in true Reacher fashion: neatly, with a lot of violence and a climactic battle along the way.

That said, this might be the most violent "Reacher" season finale on Prime Video yet. It's a finale John Wick would be proud of, frankly. Things start off with a bit of tension building and moving the plot along, but after about 14 minutes, we're thrust into a climactic action set piece that lasts for about another 15 minutes before we get a break.

During those 15 minutes, Reacher gets absolutely beat to ... well, I can't say the word that comes to mind at this family-friendly publication. But if you've ever watched a "John Wick" film and thought, "How the heck did he survive that?" you'll probably have the same reaction at the end of this episode.

Spoilers ahead for the "Reacher" season 4 finale

Season 4's finale centers around an epic fight sequence

Like in every "Reacher" season, we've spent season 4 building towards a climactic final episode. This is not a show that reserves its finales for wrapping things up and setting up the next season. If it's a "Reacher" finale, you're getting an epic, violent showdown ... and then everything gets to wrap up neatly at the very end.

Season 4 is no exception. After episode 7's bombshell cliffhanger ending that left U.S. presidential candidate John Sampson dead, episode 8 starts with Reacher (Alan Ritchson), Tamara (Sydelle Noel) and Jacob (Christopher Marquette) headed towards D.C. Quickly, though, they connect enough dots to lead them back to the restaurant where they had a tense standoff with Amisha (Anggun) and Lila (Agnez Mo) earlier in the season.

This time, there's no standoff. Under the cover of a thunderstorm, the trio break in and start taking out everyone in the building. This kicks off a 15-minute action sequence with some particularly brutal moments.

My favorite? There's a moment where Reacher's hands are hit with nails (you can already see where this is going). Rather than writhe in pain, the gigantic investigator takes his massive palm, nails and all, and smashes it into the side of a bad guy's head. But a close second is when Reacher crushes another guy's head with an elevator before engaging in his final hand-to-hand combat fight with Lila.

Verdict: Another season of Reacher that doesn't deviate from the formula, and that's OK

Is this finale flawless? No. I'd say this finale, more than any moment ever, exposed Jack Reacher's plot armor. The sheer number of knife wounds he gets fighting Lila and the subsequent blood loss should kill him. It's not like he has a magic bulletproof John Wick suit. He's clad only in a T-shirt.

But the reality is, I don't care. And if you're a "Reacher" fan, you probably don't care either. You come for the violence. For the hand-to-hand combat. For the one-liners that Lila and Reacher fling at each other before one of them gets the mic-drop kill. And on that front, this finale delivers spectacularly.

As a book lover, I have been on a quest to read highly-rated #BookTok novels this year, and so far, my reading slump is well and truly over. But if there's one thing I love more than reading a good book, it's a well-cast, true-to-the-book screen adaptation — with bonus points if it's on the best streaming services.

Thankfully for me and fellow bookworms, 2026 (and 2027, if I'm honest) are shaping up to be great years for book adaptations. Across limited series, streaming films, and theatrical releases, there are plenty of upcoming titles in the pipeline that are sure to either be a) better than the book or b) supplementary to it. Look, sometimes series or film adaptations don't quite nail the brief, but I'm optimistic that these five entries will be worth the watch.

From impending releases that are less than a week away to those heading our way later this year, here are my five highly anticipated book-to-screen adaptations coming soon.

The Love Hypothesis - Prime Video (September 23)

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Prime Video's exceptional slate of book adaptations? From The Summer I Turned Pretty and Red, White & Royal Blue to Off Campus and the Our Fault film series, Prime Video has a lot to love in its take on beloved stories. Its next adaptation is one that I have been buzzing about since it was announced: Ali Hazelwood's The Love Hypothesis.

According to the logline, the film follows Olive (Lili Reinhart), a brilliant PhD candidate focused on her future in academia. But when she realizes her best friend Anh (Rachel Marsh) has fallen for her crush Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay), Olive impulsively kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman) to prove she’s moved on. What begins as a desperate act of friendship spirals into a fake relationship with rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial agreement. As their arrangement blurs the line between performance and reality, Olive is forced to test her most daunting hypothesis yet: that love might actually be worth the risk.

Carrie - Prime Video (October 7)

I'm not the biggest fan of horror movies or series, but everything showrunner Mike Flanagan touches turns to gold IMO, and this adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie could be another massive hit.

As per the logline, the series follows misfit high schooler Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) who has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping - in theaters (November 20)

As a teenager, the Hunger Games books and movies changed my life. Suzanne Collins wormed her way into my heart as my favorite author, and Francis Lawrence — the director of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and beyond—perfectly captured what I loved (and hated) most about the books in his films.

The latest book, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, was my favourite read of 2025, so my expectations are plenty high for the movie — slated for release this November. Better yet, fellow Aussie Joseph Zada plays the lead role, and the casting was perfect.

According to the logline, the film takes place 24 years before the first, when 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy (Zada) is selected to compete in the 50th Hunger Games. Every 25th edition of the games, known as a Quarter Quell, adds a special twist to the annual rules. For the 50th Hunger Games, each district of Panem must send twice the number of tributes to the Capitol to fight to the death in a televised spectacle.

Pride and Prejudice - Netflix (December 3)

So, this adaptation's release date is quite some time away in December, but it is definitely worth talking about. With Emma Corrin taking the lead as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden taking on Mr. Darcy, this retelling of the classic Jane Austen novel is going to be a hoot!

According to the logline, the 6-part series follows the five Bennet sisters as they navigate love, family, and society’s expectations to secure their futures when wealthy bachelors arrive in their neighborhood. Jane falls for the charming Mr Bingley, while Elizabeth clashes with his proud friend Mr Darcy – but unexpected encounters and family scandals force Elizabeth to reconsider her feelings and discover the true nature of love.

The 55-second teaser doesn't give much away, but I can already tell that the series is going to be true-to-form and might add a little bit of spice… but I guess we will have to wait and see.

Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone - HBO Max (December 25)

Okay, I won't lie — as a Potterhead, I am a teensy bit skeptical about this one since I grew up on the Daniel Radcliffe films and have fond memories of seeing the latter four in theaters during their respective release weekends. The energy was truly unmatched.

However, this HBO Max take on our boy Harry looks as magical as ever, and knowing that it's an eight-part series based on the first book likely means we're going to get more out of the story — and perhaps, a truer adaptation of the book.

As per the logline, there is nothing special about Harry Potter — or so his Aunt Petunia tells him. But when a mysterious letter of admission to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry arrives, it opens the door to a hidden world of magic, friendship and adventure. Yet behind Hogwarts’ enchanted walls lie dark secrets. Harry must find the courage to prove himself against the darkest wizard of all.

"Neagley" is arriving on Prime Video tomorrow (September 16), just as "Reacher" season 4 wraps up with its season finale. I won't even pretend this is a coincidence.

Nor, I'm sure, would Prime Video if it were asked. This is clearly an intentional play to get "Reacher" fans on board with its new crime thriller spin-off. After all, why not hit play on Neagley episode 1 once you've wrapped up another eight episodes with Alan Ritchson's titular investigator?

Thankfully, the powers that be at Amazon's streaming service gave "Neagley" far more room to breathe creatively. While there is, of course, an appearance by Ritchson as Jack Reacher, Maria Sten's debut as a series lead largely ignores its predecessor. If you took out the cameo(s), you might even be able to forget this is a "Reacher" clone.

That said, this is undeniably a clone of Prime Video's hit crime thriller adaptation. It repeats much of the same formula that made the original a hit and features the same showrunner, Nick Santora. If you've ever seen "Reacher," you'd find it impossible to compare the two.

But they're not identical. "Neagley" is darker, and I'd argue more deadly than Ritchson's show. Reacher commits a lot of violence in his series, but quite often he opts for his fists over a gun. In this spin-off, everyone just gets shot ... and usually shot dead.

It also delves deeper into its main character, something that Sten hinted at leading up to this series. "Neagley has a lot going on in her life, Sten told Collider. "She has a history, and she has a life lived. She has some quite severe personal issues of her own that she’s grappling with. We just get to know her better and see her grapple with these issues." Having seen the series now for myself, I can confirm her comments are spot on.

Possible light spoilers ahead for "Neagley" season 1

'Neagley' is a darker tale than any previous 'Reacher' chapter

Through four seasons, "Reacher" has a formula. Be stoic, be bruising and be just charming enough to get the girl and make the audience like you. We get occasional moments of character growth (particularly in season 2), but for the most part, it's rinse and repeat with each new season.

With "Neagley," things take a darker turn. The initial crime that sparks the season's investigation is personally connected to Francis Neagley. This is, admittedly, something that happened in the first two seasons of "Reacher," but Ritchson's Reacher feels far more detached from the victims despite being close to them in theory.

Neagley, however, goes in on this, fueled by her emotions. She seems as cold and calculating an investigator as Reacher on the surface, but underneath she's powered by a desire for revenge and a traumatic past.

That past gets explored in depth over the course of the eight-episode season, and it goes into some dark places. There's exploration of child sexual abuse, suicide and how people deal with trauma in general. I'm not usually one for sounding the trigger warning, but this show might earn it.

The darkness doesn't stop with Neagley's inner demons either. There are demons on the outside too. The main antagonists for the season are Pierce Woodrow (Matthew Del Negro) and Lawrence Cole (Damon Herriman), and they are true villains.

The villains of "Reacher"? They're run-of-the-mill evil. Pierce is a suit running a pharmaceutical company. Lawrence is a failed professor turned cult leader at a farm outside Chicago. Together, they combine for some truly heinous acts, including a biblical punishment for one of Lawrence's followers that's too much for even Pierce to stomach.

Verdict: 'Neagley' falls just short of 'Reacher,' but is still a worthy binge-watch

Despite its deviations from the formula and its attempts to give its main character a deep backstory worth exploring, you can't shake the feeling that this feels like a "Reacher" clone.

Unfortunately, it's also a lesser copy of its older sibling. While Neagley's personal history and traumas are worth exploring, the show still is, at its core, a shoot-em-up/beat-em-up crime thriller. When it comes to that format, Ritchson's Jack Reacher and his lack of character depth are weirdly better for carrying the audience through a violent story from start to finish.

If anything, "Neagley" probably needed to stray even further from the path of action thriller to character-driven drama and focus as much as possible on its titular hero's past. To make her the selling point, rather than the violence.

Still, I had a great time with this show, which is still very good. Just because it's not as good as "Reacher" doesn't mean it's not worth watching. I eagerly binged all eight episodes, and I have a feeling many of you reading this will do the same. I certainly hope you do; the second half of the season is where the show really finds its groove, so making it all the way through is a must if you want to feel rewarded for your time watching Prime Video's latest crime thriller show.

In even better news, this week’s crop includes one of the best thriller movies ever made. A movie that cleaned up at the Oscars and became so influential that even films released in 2026 are trying to recapture its masterful formula.

So, if you’re in the mood for something thrilling this week, here are the three new to Prime Video thriller movies that you need to stream.

3 best new to Prime Video thriller movies this week

‘Jack Reacher’ (2012)

Prime Video has become the streaming home of Jack Reacher, with the platform developing a universe based on Lee Child’s ex-Army investigator. There’s the flagship show starring Alan Ritchson, which wraps its fourth season this week, and a new spin-off dropping the same day, “Neagley.” However, did you know that before Reacher dominated the small screen, Tom Cruise took on the role for a big-screen blockbuster that’s worth revisiting?

Based on Child’s novel “One Shot,” in “Jack Reacher,” the eponymous hero is called in to assist with the investigation into a mass shooting believed to have been carried out by a trained military sniper. The authorities are convinced they have the perpetrator in custody, but as Reacher delves into the case, he discovers inconsistencies suggesting a larger conspiracy. Cruise works surprisingly well as Reacher, even if this thriller plays it safe.

‘The Silence of the Lambs’ (1991)

“The Silence of the Lambs” is the psychological thriller that all its rivals want to be. You only have to look at recent genre efforts like Netflix’s “The Whisper Man” to see just how influential this masterpiece is even 35 years after its initial release. It swept the Oscars, becoming only the third movie in history to win an Academy Award in all five major categories (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Screenplay), and it deserved every single one.

Based on Thomas Harris’s 1988 novel, Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) is top of her class at the FBI’s training academy and is called upon to interview an incarcerated serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). The FBI hopes Lecter will help them profile an active killer known as Buffalo Bill, but he’s not willing to assist for free. Clarice engages in a “quid pro quo” agreement with the brilliant psychiatrist, who is also a violent psychopath with cannibalistic tendencies. “The Silence of the Lambs” is essential and worthy of its sterling reputation. It's simply a masterpiece.

‘The Visit’ (2013)

“The Visit” was an important movie for director M. Night Shyamalan. It came off the back of a string of critically mauled duds (“The Lady in the Water,” “The Happening,” “The Last Airbender,” and “After Earth”) and at a time when his director's once-strong reputation had taken a significant hit. Fortunately, “The Visit” was seen as something of a return to form, and because it’s a Shyamalan movie you probably won’t be surprised to know there’s a big twist here. Which naturally I’m not going to spoil for you.

Presented in found-footage style, this horror-thriller sees two young siblings, Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and Tyler (Ed Oxenbould), forced by their mother (Kathryn Hahn) to spend five days with their estranged grandparents, who live in the Pennsylvania countryside. Initially welcomed by these relatives they’ve never met, they begin to notice increasingly odd behaviors and the situation spirals further before a shocking revelation comes to light. This is an enjoyable ride, but it’s definitely a one-and-done experience with little value on rewatch.

It follows two very attractive leads who meet in an exotic location, quickly fall in love, and then battle against several melodramatic hurdles. It doesn’t try to reinvent the formula, but I'm sure many viewers won't care at all.

Ry (Reficco) and her overprotective mother (Longoria) move from America to Mallorca, Spain, where stunning beaches and unexpected romance await. Ry soon meets a charming local, Juliàn (Líndez), and the two begin a passionate love affair. But Ry is dealing with chronic health conditions, and when her condition worsens and family secrets come to light, the pair's romance might not survive until the fall.

‘Icefall’ (2025)

Icefall is one of those thrillers that commanded little attention when it was first released in November 2025, but is now picking up an audience after being added to Prime Video’s movie library. It certainly has a direct-to-DVD quality about it, but if you’re in the mood for some no-frills action, you’ll find your desire for adrenaline abated by this serviceable effort.

Set across the frozen wilderness, a younger ranger, Ani (Cara Jade Myers), arrests a mysterious poacher, Harlan (Kinnaman), who is living off the land to escape his traumatic past. However, when masked criminals attack, the two are forced to strike up an uneasy alliance. The assailants are hunting for a crashed plane holding millions of dollars in cash, and Harlan and Ani will need to put their differences aside if they want to survive the ordeal.

‘The Amateur' (2026)

I’ve recommended “The Amateur” countless times since I caught it in theaters in spring 2025. It’s a slick spy thriller with big Jason Bourne energy, which is a compelling pitch in my book. Based on the Robert Littell novel of the same name, it’s certainly not flawless. However, it packs a globe-trotting revenge quest with some intense action. Every month, the top streaming services welcome a new class of film titles and television series for viewers to enjoy, and September 2026 has been no exception, especially where Prime Video is concerned. And one of the movies added to Amazon's extensive streaming library this month is one of my early-aughts favorites, a true comfort comedy featuring one of Brittany Murphy's best performances.

After her breakthrough as Tai Frasier in 1995's "Clueless," Murphy turned out a string of memorable roles in the late '90s and early 2000s, including "Girl, Interrupted," "Drop Dead Gorgeous," "8 Mile," "Riding in Cars with Boys" and "Just Married," among others. But "Uptown Girls" — which pairs the late actress with a preternaturally mature school-age Dakota Fanning — sees Murphy bring her signature blend of humor, warmth and emotional depth to elevate the part beyond mere caricature.

What is 'Uptown Girls' about?

Brittany Murphy stars as Molly Gunn, the naïve, socialite daughter of a famous rock star, who has been living off the ample trust fund left to her by her late father—that is, until she makes the horrifying discovery that the family accountant has embezzled her inheritance, leaving her penniless and homeless.

She takes on a job as a nanny for Lorraine "Ray" Schleine (Dakota Fanning), a precocious, hypochondriacal eight-year-old living in Manhattan with an absent, workaholic mother (played by Heather Locklear) and a comatose father.

Together, the free-spirited nanny and buttoned-up youngster make for quite the odd-couple pairing, and their outlooks on life cause friction. But soon, her unlikely new babysitter helps young Ray begin to bring her guard down. All the while, Molly has to deal with romantic drama after falling for singer Neal Fox (Jesse Spencer), and young Ray has to navigate her complicated family dynamics.

Why I recommend you stream 'Uptown Girls'

OK, yes, “Uptown Girls” received abysmal reviews from professional critics when it hit theaters back in summer 2003. (The Boaz Yakin-directed dramedy has only a 14% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.) But in the decades since, the film has been revisited with kinder eyes, especially in the tragic wake of Brittany Murphy’s untimely death in December 2009.

The early-2000s gem saw the late actress give one of her warmest and most charismatic performances, paired excellently with the deadpan, soon-to-thaw iciness of her much younger screen partner, Dakota Fanning. It's the emotional chemistry and comedic banter between the film's leads, as well as the tender treatment of the characters' respective plights, that have made "Uptown Girls" a comfort-watch classic all these years later.

Matinee (1993)

For a charming reminder of just how special it can be to go to the movies together, look no further than "Matinee," John Goodman's war comedy from the same director as "Gremlins." Goodman leads a terrific ensemble as a shifty B-movie producer who arrives in Florida at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, using spectacle like fake protests outside the theater and schlocky horror to make his latest monster movie, "Mant!," feel like the biggest event of the decade.

Hyped to see it is teenager Gene Loomis (Simon Fenton), whose family just moved to Key West. Though "Matinee" floundered at the box office, it remains one of Dante’s most affectionate films, lovingly satirizing the B-movie genre while celebrating the simple magic of sitting in a theater and losing yourself in a movie. Especially with the threat of nuclear war looming on the horizon. So not all that unlike today.

'Uptown Girls' (2003)

Though critics largely wrote it off when it first hit theaters, "Uptown Girls" has since gained a devoted cult following, cementing its place as an early 2000s classic. It's one of my favorite guilty pleasure watches, and you better believe I was planted in front of the TV anytime it came on cable when I was growing up. Brittany Murphy stars as lovable girl failure Molly Gunn, a spoiled rock star's daughter left broke after her slimy ex Neal (Jesse Spencer) runs off with her inheritance.

Forced to grow up over night, Molly lands a job as a nanny for the most precocious 8-year-old on the planet (Dakota Fanning), whose hard-nose attitude can't quite hide how much she's struggling to keep it together now that her father is in a coma. Though they butt heads at first over wildly different personalities, they both end up growing on each other — just as Neal crash-lands back into Molly's life.

'Leatherheads' (2008)

Hollywood really gave George Clooney free rein to flex his comedic chops in the 2000s, and "Leatherheads" is one of the best examples to come from that era. Clooney directs and stars as Dodge Connelly, a charming football player past his prime trying to save his struggling team from going under in the early days of professional American football.

When Dodge discovers Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski), a handsome young football star and World War I hero, he recruits him in the hopes of drawing bigger crowds. But Carter's squeaky-clean reputation catches the attention of Lexie Littleton (Renée Zellweger), a sharp newspaper reporter investigating whether Carter's heroic war story is actually true. "Leatherheads" is a great pick if you like witty banter, messy love triangles, and Clooney doing what he does best: being a lovable scoundrel.

Joyce (Lin Shaye) is a lonely woman in small-town Arizona who's just been widowed and discovers her late husband left her nearly broke. To keep her house, she starts renting out a spare room. When a charming younger tenant named Robert (Oliver Rayon) moves in, the romance novels she's always escaped into start bleeding into how she sees him. Her fixation soon changes from sad to dangerous, and she turns out to be willing to forge letters, stage alibis, and worse to protect her fantasy of a perfect life. How far will she go to be with Robert, or at the very least pretend that he's her partner?

'Look Away'

Maria (India Eisley) is a shy high schooler who's bullied by fellow students and depressed at home. Her plastic surgeon father (Jason Isaacs) is obsessed with physical perfection, and her checked-out mother (Mira Sorvino) offers no respite. Isolated and miserable, Maria starts confiding in her own reflection, which begins talking back. It calls itself Airam and offers to "take care of" everyone who's wronged Maria. When Maria finally lets Airam trade places with her, her confident mirror image starts settling scores, and Maria may not be able to get her life back.

'Open 24 Hours'

Mary (Vanessa Grasse) has just been released from confinement for setting her boyfriend on fire. But that boyfriend, James (Cole Vigue), was a serial killer called the Rain Ripper who forced her to watch him murder his victims. Shunned by everyone who thinks she should have stopped him sooner and medicated for her hallucinations afterward, Mary takes the only job she can get: an overnight shift at a gas station. Alone on her first night, she starts seeing James in every corner of the building. Those around her actually begin turning up dead, and she begins to spiral. That leaves her and the audience unsure how much of the carnage is in her head and how much of it is actually happening as James' ghost lingers on.

Prime Video subscribers are eating good this month, with a whopping 98 new films landing on the streaming service at the top of the month. A few new additions through the week have pushed that total over 100, but you don't need to go digging through all that mess to figure out what to watch this weekend.

I get paid to watch movies for a living, so I've already done the hard work for you. I've combed through Prime Video's latest releases to find the three standouts actually wroth watching. There are plenty of horror movies in the bunch to kick-off spooky season early, but as for me, I'll be watching "Silence of the Lambs" for the umpteenth time. To date it's the only horror movie that's ever won Best Picture. There's also "Bombshell," a drama that turns one of Fox News' biggest scandals into a star-studded affair led by Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie. Finally, for an easy weekend watch, look no further than "Uptown Girls," a 2000s classic where Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning's banter will crack you up and warm your heart.

Bombshell (2019)

The vibe: Conservative fanfiction for the girlies starring drop-dead gorgeous women

Why you should watch it: Inspired by real events and set during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, "Bombshell" follows three women whose allegations against long-time Fox News chairman Roger Ailes eventually get him ousted from the network. Charlize Theron leads a stacked cast as political commentator Megyn Kelly alongside Nicole Kidman as acclaimed journalist Gretchen Carlson and Margot Robbie as Kayla Pospisil, the wide-eyed audience stand-in jumping into the cutthroat world of broadcast journalism.

Kate McKinnon also kills it as a Fox producer who doesn't mince words and delivers this great quote in the trailer: "What would scare my grandmother or piss off my grandfather — that's a Fox story." Theron and Robbie both lost out at the Oscars for their performances here, which feels like a hate crime.

'Uptown Girls' (2003)

The vibe: A breezy watch with plenty of heart that's perfect for a lazy afternoon

Why you should watch it: Widely panned by critics when it first came out, "Uptown Girls" has steadily gained a devoted cult following, cementing its place as an early 2000s classic. This is one of my favorite guilty pleasure watches, and you can bet my ass was sat anytime it came on cable when I was growing up. Brittany Murphy stars as girl failure Molly Gunn, a trust fund baby left broke after her slimy rock star ex Neal (Jesse Spencer) makes off with all her money.

Forced to grow up over night, she gets a job as a nanny for the most precocious 8-year-old on the planet (Dakota Fanning), whose buttoned-up demeanor masks her grief over her father's coma. Though they butt heads at first over their polar opposite personalities, they both end up growing on each other — just as Neal crash-lands back into her life.

‘The Silence of the Lambs’ (1991)

The vibe: A slow-burn serial killer hunt that's tense and heart-breaking

Why you should watch it: I've probably seen this movie a million times (my first tattoo was a death's-head hawk moth because of it!), and I don't think I'll ever get tired of returning to it for my annual Halloween watch. Anthony Hopkins' iconic turn as Hannibal Lecter never fails to make my skin crawl, while Jodie Foster is equally mesmerizing as FBI agent-in-training Clarice Starling, a force to be reckoned with up against a glass ceiling.

She's given the impossible task of convincing the convicted cannibal to help track down a new serial killer on the loose. Unfortunately for her, he takes a shine to her homegrown gumption and agrees. Director Jonathan Demme uses some ingenious camera tricks to create a constant sense of unease, which cleverly mirrors the othering Clarice experiences as one of the few women in her field.

It's the last gasp of summer, which means that prime binge-watching season is nearly here. And Prime Video, one of the top streaming services, is getting in on those couch-potato celebrations early, with its September 2026 crop of new movies and TV shows hitting the Amazon platform.

Without further ado, here are the three best new-to-Prime Video shows to binge this weekend.

'Reacher' season 4

What it's about: Alan Ritchson's Jack Reacher is back in the City of Brotherly Love, though an act of neighborly compassion — trying to help a troubled woman (Karen Kwong-Chip) on the Philadelphia subway — ends up pulling the titular vigilante into a dark and deadly conspiracy involving federal agents, dangerous thugs and figures at the highest rank of power. The new season is based on "Gone Tomorrow," the 13th of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, and also stars Sydelle Noel, Agnez Mo, Anggun, Christopher Rodriguez Marquette and Kevin Corrigan.

Why you should watch it: The fourth installment of the Amazon action-crime thriller is quickly coming to an end (the season finale will drop on September 16), but if you missed this Wednesday's explosive penultimate episode, you'll definitely want to catch up before then. We won't spoil things here, but it involves the origin story of a deadly, Armageddon-level chemical weapon.

'Over the Garden Wall'

What it's about: Created by Patrick McHale for Cartoon Network, this dark fantasy animated series centers on half-brothers Wirt and Greg (voiced by Elijah Wood and Collin Dean, respectively), who must travel through a strange and mysterious forest called the Unknown to find their way home. Along the way, they encounter eerie folklore and eccentric townsfolk, including the elderly Woodsman (Christopher Lloyd) and an irritable bluebird named Beatrice (Melanie Lynskey).

Why you should watch it: The 2014 miniseries — which was followed up with a 2024 short for its 10th anniversary — took home two Emmys (for Outstanding Animated Program and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for art director Nick Cross) and has a stellar 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where critics praised: "Over the Garden Wall's modern sensibilities mix well with its fairy-tale setting, creating a whimsically witty series for viewers of all ages."

'Everybody Loves Raymond'

What it's about: All nine seasons of the long-running CBS comedy — which centers on the day-to-day life of sportswriter Raymond “Ray” Barone (Ray Romano) and his hilariously meddling Italian-American family living on Long Island — arrived on the Prime Video platform on September 1. Along with Romano, the iconic ensemble cast includes Doris Roberts (as Ray's mom Marie), Peter Boyle (as his gruff dad Frank), Brad Garrett (as his cop brother Robert) and Patricia Heaton (as his perpetually stressed-out wife Debra).

Why you should watch it: One of the best sitcoms of all time, "Everybody Loves Raymond" racked up a whopping 69 Emmy nominations and 15 wins over its nine-season run, including major acting trophies for Romano, Heaton, Garrett and Roberts, and wins for Best Comedy Series. That's all to say that those familial TV hijinks are very, very funny.

The action movies section on Prime Video is a strange place. Alongside the big-name blockbusters and the endless parade of straight-to-streaming movies, there are absolutely tons of genuinely great action movies almost nobody talks about. The only problem is that they're buried so far down the menu you'd never find them just by scrolling.

The algorithm seemingly has no interest in showing them to you; it wants you watching the same handful of hits on a loop. Maybe that's meant to boost stats, but it also means the more interesting stuff gets left to rot at the bottom of the catalog.

So I went digging for you to see what I could find. The result? Three great action flicks you've probably never seen before. And I'm also willing to bet you probably haven't even heard their titles. If you're ready to watch some great action movies on Prime Video that won't surface on your home screen, keep reading. You may very well find a new favorite in one of these gems.

'13 Assassins' (2010)

If you've never seen a Takashi Miike movie, this is a great one to start with. Set in the dying days of feudal Japan, "13 Assassins" follows a veteran samurai with an impossible mission: assassinate a sadistic young lord, the shogun's own half-brother, before his cruelty ends up ruining the country. He recruits a dozen men for what everyone understands is a suicide run, and the film patiently builds toward one of the most impressive action sequences ever committed to film. It's a nearly 45-minute battle where the 13 take on an army of more than 200 in a booby-trapped village.

If you love samurai movies, know that this one is every bit as good as the classics it's descended from. If you love Kurosawa, you'll enjoy "13 Assassins." And if you're unfamiliar, this is a good place to starting learning all about the samurai flicks that came before.

'Child 44' (2015)

Tom Hardy is Leo Demidov, a secret police officer in Stalin's Soviet Union whose life falls apart when he refuses to denounce his own wife. He then stumbles onto a string of child murders the state refuses to acknowledge. Exiled from his home and far out of town, Leo hunts down the killer anyway alongside a wary general played by Gary Oldman.

Based on Tom Rob Smith's bestselling novel and stacked with talent like Noomi Rapace and Joel Kinnaman, this bleak thriller is a heavy but entertaining watch that'll keep you on the edge of your seat.

'Mortal' (2020)

Eric (Nat Wolff) is a young American drifting through rural Norway who accidentally kills a local teenager with a power he doesn't understand and can't control. As a result, he finds himself hunted by the authorities. As a psychologist (Iben Akerlie) tries to work out what he actually is, it becomes clear that Eric's abilities are tied to something much older and stranger: Norse mythology and the gods that come with it.

From André Øvredal, the man behind the cult favorite "Trollhunter," this slow-burn action thriller has tons of exciting moments that'll have you begging for more when the credits roll.

'The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin'

An adaptation of Stephen R. Lawhead’s novels (1987's "Taliesin" and 1988's "Merlin), this historical-fantasy drama is set before Camelot, exploring the Arthurian legend in post-Roman Britain and focusing on Merlin's origin story before King Arthur's birth.

The seven-part cinematic series follows the enigmatic prophet Merlin (played by Tom Sharp)—the son of the bard Taliesin (James Arden) and Atlantean Princess Charis (Rose Reid)—as he emerges from isolation and madness to unite the fractured kingdom that's under threat from Saxon invaders.

Along with those aforementioned leads, the "Pendragon" cast includes Emree Franklin as Morgian, Finney Cassidy as Aurelius, Myles Clohessy as Uther, Brett Cooper as Ganieda, Alex Laurence Phillips as Pelleas and Colin Cunningham as Vortigern.

‘Sterling Point’

“Sterling Point” is officially coming back for a second season (yay!), so if you haven't checked out the popular coming-of-age mystery-drama since it premiered on Prime Video this past August, now's as good a time as any.

The youthful Canadian romance has remained in the streamer's top three slots since that late-summer premiere and has garnered a strong 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where the site's critical consensus praises: "[Series creator] Megan Park expertly crafts a coming-of-age drama with plenty of early aughts nostalgia that rises above its class, setting sail with audiences' expectations and delighting all who seek to take their hearts on a solid adventure."

The eight-episode first season centers on Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin), a New York City teenager who unexpectedly inherits a remote island in Canada from the estranged grandfather she never met. Upon arrival, she discovers the island is already occupied by Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle), a girl with an unexpected connection to Annie’s family.

‘The Grand Tour’

It's been a decade of "The Grand Tour" on Prime Video and to celebrate the big 10th anniversary, the British motoring television program has gotten a lively reboot.

The original hosting trio of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May have been replaced by Throttle House YouTubers Thomas Holland and James Engelsman, alongside British railway enthusiast and social media personality Francis Bourgeois, but the fan-favorite format thankfully remains the same. The feature-length adventures revolve around action-packed challenges across six globe-trotting episodes, including crossing the Angolan desert in track cars, testing performance vehicles in California and exploring Malaysia's vibrant car culture.

The show's new gear is clearly working: Not only is the reboot steadily chugging along in Prime Video's top 10 charts, but a second season starring the new presenters is also already in the works.

At the minute, new Prime Video original “The Runner” is holding the No. 1 spot, but it’s not on my list. Why? That's because the flick’s awful 7% score on Rotten Tomatoes speaks to its less-than-stellar quality. Instead, I’ve found three alternative thrillers that are far more worthy of your time.

So, if you want to add some excitement to your Prime Video watchlist this week, here are three recently added thriller movies that offer tension, excitement, and a couple of twists.

3 best new to Prime Video thriller movies this week

‘Trap’ (2024)

One of my biggest passions beyond the screen is live music. I attend dozens of gigs and music festivals a year (I spend far too much money on tickets). So, “Trap,” an M. Night Shyamalan thriller set during a pop concert, combines two of my favorite things: movies and live music! It’s far from perfect, and unfortunately, really dips in its ropey second half, but the first 45 minutes are excellent, with Shyamalan rediscovering some of his old magic.

The wrinkle here is that “Trap” is told from the serial killer's perspective. There’s no mystery about “the Butcher’s” identity. We know that Josh Hartnett’s Cooper is the villain from the start. Taking his young daughter to a concert for her idol, pop star Lady Raven (Saleka Night Shyamalan), Cooper is stunned to discover police are aware of his attendance and have set up a sting operation to catch him. Now he’s got to think fast to escape.

‘Valkyrie’ (2008)

Director Bryan Singer, the filmmaker behind hits like “The Usual Suspects” and the first two “X-Men” movies, teams up with Tom Cruise for “Valkyrie,” a WWII movie that chronicles a daring plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. “Mission: Impossible” director Christopher McQuarrie is on co-writing duties, and the movie also stars Kenneth Branagh and Bill Nighy. That’s a long-winded way of saying there’s a lot of talent involved, in front of and behind the camera.

Based on real events, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise) leads a secret plot from within the Nazi war machine to eliminate the country's leader, Adolf Hitler (David Bamber). The plan is to use the Operation Valkyrie national emergency system to take control of Berlin, but removing the infamous leader requires every element of the plan to go right. It’s an enjoyable historical thriller that explores an area of WWII less familiar to many viewers.

‘The Purge: Anarchy’ (2014)

Prime Video has added the first three movies in “The Purge” franchise this month. Perfect for subscribers looking for a movie marathon. However, if you only want to watch the best one, then let me make the case for “The Purge: Anarchy,” the second movie in the series. Set in a world where crime is legal for a single 12-hour period each year, “Anarchy” smartly addresses the biggest criticisms of its predecessor, and in my mind, is the definitive “Purge” movie.

Unlike the first “The Purge,” which is a restrictive home invasion thriller that sees a wealthy family terrorised on Purge night, “Anarchy” heads out onto the streets, exploring the dystopian events on the ground. It centers on Leo (Frank Grillo), a grieving father looking to use the 12-hour Purge period for revenge. However, his plan becomes complicated when he becomes a reluctant protector for a group of strangers trapped in the lawless chaos and desperately seeking a safe hiding spot.

It’s the start of a new week, and the Prime Video top 10 most-watched list has been updated. This ever-changing ranking gives you a quick look at the movies drawing the most attention on the streaming service. However, popularity doesn’t automatically mean high quality.

That’s why I’ve combed through today’s Prime Video top 10 and picked out three movies worth adding to your watch list. Well, actually, I’ve selected two movies that deserve your attention, and one that is only for the morbidly curious who enjoy watching a misfire. If you like “so bad, it’s good” movies, then the current Prime Video No. 1 might appeal to you.

These are the standouts of the Prime Video most-watched list right now. And one final note: this article is based on the Prime Video top 10 as of Monday, September 7. Here are my three picks…

‘The Runner’ (2026)

Prime Video’s new original thriller “The Runner” set an unwanted record last week when it received the worst reviews of Gal Gadot’s career. The movie holds a miserable 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, you’re probably asking why I’ve included it here, and honestly, it’s because there’s something morbidly interesting about watching a trainwreck. Critics have labeled it “lazy,” “tedious,” and “dumb as dirt.” So watch at your own peril.

Described by Prime Video as a “pulse-pounding psychological thriller,” Gadot plays a high-powered lawyer whose ordinary world is thrown into chaos when a mysterious caller (Damian Lewis) informs her that her son has been kidnapped. Given a series of commands, she must race through London to complete them; otherwise her son will be murdered. It’s a race-against-the-clock thriller with some seriously sloppy execution.

‘Good Fortune’ (2025)

Keanu Reeves might be extremely good at playing a kick-butt action hero, but he’s also got serious comedic chops. It’s the latter on display in “Good Fortune,” a pleasing comedy written and directed by Aziz Ansari. This movie has its heart in the right place, even if its commentary on wealth inequality and class divide feels a little flawed. Still, it’s got a fun high-concept premise and features Ansari alongside Reeves, Seth Rogan and Keke Palmer.

Arj (Ansari) is an aspiring filmmaker, but stuck working low-paid jobs just to keep his head above water. One such job is working as an assistant for a wealthy venture capitalist, Jeff (Rogen). But when Jeff fires Arj, the gig-worker hits rock bottom. In steps Gabriel (Reeves), a low-level guardian angel desperate to prove himself to his superiors. When Gabriel meddles in Arj's and Jeff's lives, he makes a mess that requires a lot of cleanup.

‘Project Hail Mary' (2026)

“Project Hail Mary” arrived on Prime Video on July 3, and it’s been a mainstay of the top 10 ever since. Naturally, it’s starting to slip down the list after more than two months on the platform, but if you still haven’t watched it, you really should make it a priority. I rewatched it over the weekend for the third time, and it continues to delight each time. Based on the Andy Weir novel of the same name, it’s a dazzlingly entertaining sci-fi movie that ranks among the year’s best.

The movie opens with Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) awaking from an induced coma onboard an interstellar spaceship, several light-years from Earth. Clearly, he’s millions of miles away from home for a reason, but the problem is, he can’t remember his mission, or even his name. What follows is a thrilling blockbuster in which the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance.

This week, we’ve handed out report cards for the platforms in our best streaming services guide: Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney+/Hulu, Paramount+, Apple TV and Peacock.

The Tom’s Guide streaming team uses these platforms every day to recommend the latest movies and TV shows on each to our readers. Our goal with these report cards was to grade each over the past 12 months in key areas including price, library, originals, live content and more.

Now that each has received its report card and overall grade, there’s only one thing left to do: compare the results and determine which streaming service is most worthy of your monthly subscription in 2026.

Pricing

*On August 29, Apple TV announced its latest price hike, increasing a monthly subscription to $14.99. Our report card grade is based on its previous $12.99 price.

The cost of streaming has become a major talking point recently. We held a Tom’s Guide streaming survey in June, which found that more than 35% of respondents pay more than $60 each month on streaming. Wasn’t streaming supposed to be cheaper than cable?

Price hikes have been a regular occurrence. In fact, Apple TV increased its monthly cost (from $12.99 to $14.99) just as we began publishing our report cards. But it’s far from alone; in the past 12 months, every single streaming service we graded has increased prices.

As of now, barring any more sudden hikes, the cheapest tier is found on Peacock. Its Select plan costs just $7.99 but comes with some major caveats like no sports, movies, or originals. The most expensive is, perhaps predictably, Netflix’s Premium tier at $26.99 per month.

The highest scorers in this category were Prime Video, largely because most people get it as part of an Amazon Prime membership, and Disney+/Hulu, which offers the most choice (either separate or bundled), with two robust services for $12.99, or $19.99 without ads.

Also, a quick shoutout to Apple TV. Yes, it’s just increased its price, but we appreciate that it offers a single tier, so there’s no confusion about what you have access to. It’s just one cost for everything Apple TV has to offer, which feels refreshing compared to its streaming rivals.

Library

Our library category takes a bird's-eye view of everything found on each streaming service. That’s movies and shows, including both licensed content and original efforts. Next to price, this is arguably the key category for most people to consider when signing up for a streaming platform.

HBO came out on top because it offers a selection of world-class television and blockbuster movies via Warner Bros and A24. Disney+/Hulu was also in the running. After all, the combo of two bundled services is hard to beat. Disney+ covers the family (and Marvel/Star Wars nerds), and Hulu has plenty for adults. It’s a platform that really has something for everybody.

Netflix’s library is solid, but it has lost so much licensed content over the years as seemingly every media conglomerate has launched its own rival platform. Apple TV has great originals, but lacks much else. And while Prime Video has quantity down, its library is overstuffed with the sorts of movies that you would have previously seen in the $1 DVD bin at Walmart.

Paramount+ lacks major movie franchises, and beyond “Yellowstone,” few new TV shows that generate much buzz, and Peacock has NBCUniversal's vault to draw from. This is a rich well with beloved sitcoms like “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “30 Rock.” Plus, it gets Universal movies, so as long as you don’t mind the Minions, that’s another advantage.

Originals

Originals are a big part of what keeps you subscribed to a streaming service long-term. If a platform isn’t adding a consistent stream of stuff you want to watch, why stick around?

Netflix dominates this field, releasing more originals than its rivals, and producing shows that catch the zeitgeist, like “Stranger Things,” “Squid Game” and “Wednesday.” But it receives the lowest grade here, with the average quality level often being very poor over the past 12 months. Netflix original movies have a deserved reputation for being mostly skippable.

HBO Max and Apple TV are the two standouts; both deliver some of the finest original television shows around. HBO is known for regularly dropping essential series, but Apple TV is really giving it some competition, and its commitment to variety hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Disney+ ensures Marvel and Star Wars fans are never lacking for anything to watch between theatrical releases, but Hulu deserves some recognition as well, for originals like “Alien: Earth,” “Only Murders in the Building” season 5, “The Shards,” and “Paradise” season 2 over the past year.

Prime Video is also starting to find a niche in buzzy teen dramas like "Off Campus," "The Summer I Turned Pretty," and “Sterling Point.” Meanwhile, Peacock is basically a required subscription for anybody who takes reality TV seriously. After all, it is the streaming home of “The Traitors.” Finally, Paramount+ has had a poor 12 months, unless you’re a “South Park” fan.

Interface

To be frank, every streaming service has an interface that is only tolerable at best. There’s a reason the highest grade we awarded in this category was Apple TV with a passable B. Each has quirks and annoyances that you have to deal with. There’s no truly great interface out there.

They pretty much all take the same fundamental form, rows of movies/shows presented in a “tile” format, so there’s not a huge degree of difference between them. It really comes down to the individual pain points of each platform, because some are easier to tolerate than others

Prime Video and Paramount+ ranked last. Amazon’s streamer is disorganized and presents you with PVOD content and add-on channel packages that you have to purchase separately. There’s nothing worse than seeing a movie you really want to watch on Prime Video, only to be frustrated when you discover it’s not on Prime Video and must be rented.

Paramount+ is similarly unintuitive to navigate, and, if I can offer a personal anecdote, I’ve faced a persistent problem with the mobile app. The season select button doesn’t work. So, I can watch season 1 of a show or nothing. And a quick web search tells me others have faced the same problem.

Also, and this goes for all the streaming services graded, we’re in an era where A.I. is getting ever smarter (and probably coming for our jobs), yet none of these platforms can implement a recommendation algorithm that reliably surfaces content similar to what you’ve watched. Do better!

Live Content

Live content is an area that most major streaming services are rapidly expanding. It makes sense. For millions, live content (typically live sports) is the only reason they still watch traditional broadcast television, so it’s an area that holds plenty of value for viewers.

Looking at the past 12 months, Peacock wins in the live sports arena by a landslide. It was the home of the 2026 Winter Olympics and had Spanish-language broadcasts of the recent World Cup 2026. Beyond these special events (Which only come around every four years), it’s home to Sunday Night Football, NBA and WNBA games, and Premier League soccer.

Prime Video has been making impressive moves in this area with Thursday Night Football and NBA and WNBA games. Netflix is making similar waves with “WWE Raw,” select NFL games, boxing and its first-ever live MLB events in 2026. Apple TV isn’t getting left behind with MLS a major part of the service, and most importantly, comprehensive Formula 1 coverage.

HBO Max has 72 regular-season NHL games per year and the Stanley Cup Final, but no NFL or NBA (WB’s deal with the NBA concluded after the 2024-25 season), which hurts its grade. While Disney+/Hulu blocks most of its sports behind an ESPN-shaped paywall.

The other big winner here is Paramount+, which competes with Peacock, thanks to the NFL, UFC, UEFA Champions League, Serie A, Carabao Cup and even some college football. If you have Paramount+ Premium, you also get some PGA Tour events and WNBA games.

Outside of sports, Hulu has the annual Academy Awards (but even as an Oscar nut, I know this is hardly a major draw), and Netflix has experimented with special broadcasts, such as “Skyscraper Live” back in January. These are nice extras, but for most subscribers, when we talk about live content, it’s all about sports, sports, sports.

Note: This is just an evaluation of the live programming on offer in the U.S. Live programming varies by market.

Overall Grades

If you can only subscribe to one streaming service in 2026, we’d suggest HBO Max. While it didn’t receive the highest grade in every single category, overall it offers a practically unrivaled library, several original shows worth sticking around for, and a few live sporting events of note.

Netflix will presumably always be the most popular choice, and it scores respectable, even if its original movie output is disappointing.

Disney+/Hulu offers great value, and a breadth of content that will keep the whole family entertained. Apple TV puts quality over quantity, and there’s merit in that approach. Peacock is often neglected but might be worth considering, though its grade this time is significantly helped by major events (Olympics/World Cup) that aren’t annual.

Paramount+ and Prime Video round out the report card, two services that have plus points, but just as many caveats. Hopefully, over the next 12 months, they can beef up their original lineup and come back swinging, ready to take on the pack we’ve graded above them in 2027.

Overall, there is no perfect streaming service. Each platform has its strengths and areas for improvement. Subscribing to 2-3 is perhaps the best way to get most of what appeals to you. However, returning to our survey results, nearly 30% of respondents subscribe to 7 or more platforms, which definitely seems excessive. My advice: you should cancel a few.

We’re already beginning to evaluate each of these streaming services for our next series of streaming service report cards in 2027, so watch this space; the winners and losers could change.

September delivered a seriously stacked movie lineup to Prime Video, with a whopping 98 new films landing on the streaming service at the top of the month. That's nearly double the number of new additions we usually see, so there's no shortage of ways to spend a weekend on the couch.

If you're looking for something to watch, you don't need to go digging for the good stuff. I've combed through all the new releases on Prime Video to spotlight the best of the bunch, three standout films that stand above the rest. Halloween's coming early with how many horror movies just arrived on Prime Video, but if I had to pick just one, "Silence of the Lambs" is well worth your time. To date it's the only horror movie that's ever won Best Picture. There's also "Trap," a campy thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, and "The First Omen," one of the few series reboots in recent years that I genuinely enjoyed.

Ready to start watching? Here's why each one is worth a spot on your watchlist this weekend.

'The First Omen' (2024)

The vibe: A quick and haunting demon fix that works against all the odds

Why you should watch it: I'm still not convinced a prequel to "The Omen" needed to exist, but "The First Omen" is a solid horror movie, first and foremost, with more exploration of deeper themes like religious trauma and authoritarian assaults on bodily autonomy than I expected for a reboot. Nell Tiger Free stars as Margaret, a woman who's sent to Rome to begin a life to service to the church, only to discover the origins of the sinister events that lead to the birth of Damien Thorn (Harvey Spencer Stephens), the Antichrist. With an impressive critics' score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, you know it’s a horror movie worth watching.

'Trap' (2024)

The vibe: An M. Night Shyamalan thriller where a serial killer turned suburban dad must escape capture after walking into the police's arena-size trap.

Why you should watch it: While "Trap" doesn't quite stick the landing, it's an absurd but entertaining ride with plenty of twists to keep your attention. Josh Hartnett stars as the man of the hour, whose family have no clue about his murderous double life. But when he takes his teen daughter, Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to a concert, he realizes it's been overrun by law enforcement in an elaborate sting operation. With delightfully over-the-top performances, a campy narrative, and some curveballs I genuinely didn't see coming, "Trap" makes for a fun watch if nothing else.

‘The Silence of the Lambs’ (1991)

The vibe: A slow-burn serial killer hunt with an undercurrent of enemies to lovers (Watch the sequel before you call me crazy)

Why you should watch it: I've probably seen this movie a million times (my first tattoo was a death's head hawk moth because it!) and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. Anthony Hopkins' iconic performance as Hannibal Lecter never fails to make my skin crawl, and Jodie Foster is equally mesmerizing as the tenacious FBI-agent-in-training Clarice Starling. She's given the impossible task of getting the convicted cannibal to help flush out a new serial killer on the loose. Director Jonathan Demme uses some ingenious camera tricks to create a general sense of unease that mirrors the othering Clarice struggles with as one of the few women in her line of work.

September 2026 came out of the gate running, if all of the must-watch shows and movies arriving on streaming this month are any proof. And Prime Video is no exception, with high-profile flicks and series quickly being added to the Amazon streamer's already extensive library of titles.

'The Grand Tour' season 7

What it's about: The British motoring television program gets a lively reboot on September 4, replacing Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May with Throttle House YouTubers Thomas Holland and James Engelsman, alongside British railway enthusiast and social media personality Francis Bourgeois. The format remains with a variety of action-packed challenges across six globe-trotting episodes, including crossing the Angolan desert in track cars, testing performance vehicles in California and exploring Malaysia's vibrant car culture.

Why you should watch it: "The Grand Tour" is one of Prime Video's most-watched original series, so it will be interesting to see if our fresh lineup of presenters can match the chemistry, humor and camaraderie of their predecessors. Regardless, Amazon has already started planning a second series with the new trio, so there are many more motoring antics to come.

'Desperate Housewives'

What it's about: The suburban women of Wisteria Lane lead a pretty idyllic life on their quiet, beautiful street—that is, until one of them turns up dead. That deceased neighbor (Brenda Strong's Mary Alice Young) goes on to narrate the messy and often shocking lives of her close-knit friends, from domestic struggles to romantic drama to hidden dark secrets. The iconic ensemble cast includes Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria and Nicolette Sheridan.

Why you should watch it: If you didn't tune into the pulpy, groundbreaking primetime dramedy during its original run on ABC from October 2004 to May 2012, now's as good an opportunity as any: All eight seasons arrived on Prime Video on September 1. That's 180 episodes that addictively mix gripping mystery with delicious melodrama and physical comedy—you'll be clicking "Play next episode" before you know it.

'Reacher' season 4

What it's about: Alan Ritchson's Jack Reacher is back in the City of Brotherly Love, this time getting pulled into a complex and deadly conspiracy after trying to help a troubled woman (Karen Kwong-Chip) on the Philadelphia subway. After she shockingly takes her life, both federal agents and dangerous thugs swarm him about a mysterious flash drive and his connection to the woman. Reacher digs into the woman's background, which leads back to some ugly truths that incriminate not only figures at the highest rank of power, but also those closest to him.

Why you should watch it: Based on "Gone Tomorrow," the 13th of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, the latest installment of this Amazon action-crime thriller gives fans exactly what they've come to expect from the action-packed franchise. "Reacher maintains its formula for maximum entertainment, serving more brawn, enough narrative brains, and always the right amount of Alan Ritchson to keep the operation up and running for seasons to come," praises the critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, where season 4 has a fresh 93% approval rating.

September is bringing a seriously stacked movie lineup to Prime Video, with a huge 98 new films landing on the streaming service this month. That’s almost double the number we usually see added, so there’s no shortage of options if you’re looking for something to watch. From acclaimed classics and cult favorites to action-packed thrillers and comedies, there’s plenty to choose from.

I’ve done the digging for you and narrowed the selection down to films with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90% or higher. While a critic score can’t tell you everything about a movie, hitting 90% is a strong sign that it was widely praised by reviewers and is well worth your time. With so much arriving at once, I’ve picked out some of the standout movies that deserve a spot on your watchlist.

‘The Silence of the Lambs’ (1991)

The beginning of September means we’re officially closer to spooky season, and for me, this is the ideal time to get excited about movies perfect for fall. “The Silence of the Lambs” has always been on my list around this time of year, as it never fails to be a haunting classic. This psychological horror-thriller masterpiece, directed by Jonathan Demme, is one of only three films in Academy Award history to win all five major categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay.

FBI trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) is assigned to interview Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist and imprisoned serial killer, in the hope that he can provide clues about an active murderer known as Buffalo Bill. The killer has been kidnapping women and removing their skin, and the FBI is desperate to identify him before he strikes again. Lecter agrees to help Clarice, but only if she shares personal details about her past in return for his cryptic clues. Now she must follow his leads while racing to find Buffalo Bill and rescue his latest captive before it’s too late.

‘Carrie’ (1976)

Speaking of ideal movies, “Carrie” should be on your must-watch list if you’re excited about Prime Video’s upcoming TV adaptation. Based on Stephen King’s 1974 novel, Brian De Palma’s 1976 classic remains the definitive screen version of the story, with Sissy Spacek delivering an unforgettable performance in the title role. It was the first of King’s novels to be adapted into a feature film, kicking off a decades-long run of Hollywood adaptations of the iconic author’s work.

Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is a shy high school student who lives under the strict control of her deeply religious mother and is frequently picked on by her classmates. After discovering she can move objects with her mind, Carrie begins to gain confidence and accepts an invitation to her senior prom from popular student Tommy Ross (William Katt). However, one of her classmates plans an elaborate prank to humiliate Carrie in front of the entire school. When the plan unfolds at prom, Carrie loses control of her telekinetic abilities.

‘The Edge Of Seventeen’ (2017)

“The Edge of Seventeen” is a critically acclaimed coming-of-age comedy-drama written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig in her feature directorial debut. What’s most fascinating about the film is that Craig spent months interviewing teenagers to capture authentic modern dialogue rather than relying on adult tropes about youth. Legendary filmmaker James L. Brooks also served as a mentor to Craig, helping her strike the film’s compelling balance between humor and emotional weight.

Nadine Franklin (Hailee Steinfeld) is a 17-year-old high school student whose life becomes increasingly complicated when her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) starts dating her popular older brother, Darian (Blake Jenner). Feeling pushed aside, Nadine turns to Erwin (Hayden Szeto), an awkward but kind classmate who takes an interest in her, while she pursues an older student who catches her attention. Her relationships at home and school become increasingly strained as she struggles to deal with her changing friendships.

‘Frost/Nixon’ (2009)

“Frost/Nixon” is centered around the famous 1977 series of televised interviews between charismatic British talk-show host David Frost and former U.S. President Richard Nixon. The interviews became a monumental media event, with the first broadcast attracting around 45 million viewers and becoming the most-watched political interview in history. The film, however, is adapted from Peter Morgan’s 2006 West End and Broadway play, successfully expanding the story into a visually dynamic and tense cinematic drama.

Set in 1977, “Frost/Nixon” follows British television host David Frost (Michael Sheen) as he sets out to interview former U.S. President Richard Nixon (Frank Langella) three years after his resignation. Frost assembles a team of researchers to prepare for a series of televised interviews, hoping to question Nixon about the Watergate scandal and his time in office. Nixon, meanwhile, sees the interviews as an opportunity to rebuild his public image and believes Frost will be easy to handle.

‘A Fistful Of Dynamite’ (1972)

Finally, we’re ending this list with a classic. “A Fistful of Dynamite” is an epic Spaghetti Western that serves as the middle chapter of Sergio Leone’s thematic “Once Upon a Time” trilogy, sandwiched between “Once Upon a Time in the West” and “Once Upon a Time in America.” It’s packed with explosive practical effects, sweeping panoramic vistas of Almería, Spain, real train crashes and huge crowd scenes featuring hundreds of extras. Safe to say, it’s an intense film that delivers on a surprisingly massive scale.

During the Mexican Revolution in 1913, Juan Miranda (Rod Steiger) is a Mexican bandit who dreams of robbing the wealthy Mesa Verde bank. His plans change when he meets John Mallory (James Coburn), an Irish explosives expert hiding in Mexico. Juan persuades John to help with the robbery, but when they reach the bank, they discover it is being used to hold political prisoners. After the prisoners are freed, the pair become caught up in the revolution and find themselves fighting alongside the rebels.

‘Atomic Blonde’ (2017)

If you enjoy an intense action-thriller, “Atomic Blonde” should be on your watchlist. Directed by David Leitch (uncredited co-director of “John Wick” and director of “Bullet Train”), the film is based on the 2012 graphic novel “The Coldest City” by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart.

I’ll always praise it for its impressive fight choreography, especially knowing that Charlize Theron performed nearly all of her own stunts after months of intense martial arts training, even cracking two teeth during rehearsals. And, as you’ll see, things get seriously brutal and intense.

Set in Berlin just days before the fall of the Berlin Wall, “Atomic Blonde” follows MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron), who is sent to the city after a fellow British operative is killed. Her mission is to recover a stolen microfilm containing the identities of intelligence agents and uncover the double agent responsible for leaking information. Working alongside Berlin station chief David Percival (James McAvoy), Lorraine confronts a dangerous network of KGB operatives, assassins, and rival spies while searching for the missing list.

‘The Edge Of Seventeen’ (2017)

“The Edge of Seventeen” is a brilliant coming-of-age comedy-drama I’d recommend to anyone looking for a charming movie. The film captures the spirit of 1980s John Hughes classics like “The Breakfast Club” and “Sixteen Candles” while giving them a modern twist.

It also hinges on a fantastic performance from Hailee Steinfeld. Unlike many glossy Hollywood high school movies, it embraces the awkwardness, self-absorption, and emotional chaos of being a teenager (plus, I particularly enjoyed the comedic banter between Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson).

17-year-old Nadine Franklin (Hailee Steinfeld) is a high school student whose already complicated life becomes even more difficult when her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) starts dating her popular older brother, Darian (Blake Jenner). Feeling increasingly isolated, Nadine turns to her sarcastic history teacher, Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson), while also developing an unexpected friendship with her awkward classmate Erwin (Hayden Szeto).

‘Carrie’ (1976)

There’s no better time to watch the original “Carrie” now that the new TV adaptation is arriving on Prime Video next month. Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel of the same name has always been one of my favorites, and the classic film remains a true horror masterpiece.

Produced on a modest budget of under $2 million, it grossed more than $33 million domestically, becoming a box office smash during its time and an enduring horror classic widely regarded as one of the best supernatural horror films ever made.

Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) is a shy high school student whose sheltered life is controlled by her fanatically religious mother and complicated by constant bullying from her classmates. After discovering she can move objects with her mind, Carrie begins to gain confidence when classmate Tommy Ross (William Katt) invites her to the senior prom. However, another student, Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen), plots an elaborate prank to humiliate Carrie during the event.

‘The Thing’ (1982)

I rewatched “The Thing” recently and came to appreciate just how much I love this film, not only because of its compelling premise but also because of its truly incredible practical effects. It’s something the 2011 prequel should have taken note of.

This iconic sci-fi horror masterpiece from John Carpenter features astonishing, nightmare-inducing creature designs that make the entire film even more haunting. Not to mention, one of my favorite parts is the sense of paranoia that builds among the characters.

Set at an isolated American research station in Antarctica, “The Thing” follows helicopter pilot R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell) after a mysterious sled dog is pursued by a Norwegian helicopter and brought into his camp. MacReady and Dr. Copper (Richard Dysart) investigate the nearby Norwegian base, where they discover that something horrifying has happened. Soon, the researchers realize the dog is actually an alien organism capable of imitating any living creature it encounters. Now, the remaining men are unsure of who has been infected.

‘The Visit’ (2013)

Spooky season isn’t far away, and if you need a good horror film to get you in the mood, “The Visit” is the perfect movie. This found-footage psychological horror is deeply unsettling and claustrophobic, with unexpected laugh-out-loud comedy largely driven by the witty dynamic between the two young leads.

I also love that the film modernizes classic fairy-tale tropes reminiscent of “Hansel and Gretel,” and while I don’t want to give too much away, I will say that the twist is truly shocking.

Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and her younger brother Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) are sent to a secluded Pennsylvania farmhouse to spend a week with their grandparents, Nana and Pop Pop, whom they have never met. Their mother, who has been estranged from her parents for years, stays behind while the children document their visit for a film Becca is making. At first, their grandparents seem welcoming, but their increasingly bizarre behavior soon leaves the siblings unsettled.

Prime Video has confirmed its September 2026 slate, and the Amazon-owned streaming service is adding dozens of movies to its library to kick off the new month. But fear not thriller fans; you don’t need to waste time scrolling the new additions, because I’ve done the hard work for you and combed through the arrivals to find a trio of worthwhile thriller picks.

Prime Video subscribers really are spoilt for choice this week. In fact, there are so many solid options that cutting it down to just three was no easy task. However, my selections include a must-watch for “John Wick” fans and a Martin Scorsese classic with Robert De Niro. If you enjoy a movie packed with tension and twists, get these in your watchlist right now.

There's no time to waste, so without further introduction, these are the three new to Prime Video thriller movies worth watching this week.

3 best new to Prime Video thriller movies this week

‘Atomic Blonde’ (2017)

Charlize Theron gives Keanu Reeves a run for his money in this action-thriller that feels very inspired by “John Wick.” It comes from director David Leitch, who was reportedly an (uncredited) co-director on the first Wick movie, so it’s perhaps no surprise that “Atomic Blonde” shares a lot of DNA. Set just days before the collapse of the Berlin Wall, this movie is an uber-stylish adrenaline-raiser with some memorable neon-lit action scenes.

Theron plays Lorraine Broughton, a high-ranking MI6 agent who is sent to Berlin to retrieve a watch stolen by a KGB agent. But this timepiece is more than a fancy accessory; it holds the name of every active intelligence agent in Berlin, so its return is of paramount importance. Once on the scene, Lorraine is drawn into a dangerous spy game where the line between friend and foe blurs. “John Wick” fans will love “Atomic Blonde."

‘Cape Fear’ (1991)

“Cape Fear” was the seventh collaboration between director Martin Scorsese and star Robert De Niro. A remake of the 1962 movie of the same name, it’s a chilling psychological thriller in which De Niro plays one of the genre’s most disturbing villains, and Scorsese brings his usual filmmaking wizardry to the table. Unsurprisingly, De Niro scooped a deserved Oscar nomination for his role as a convicted psychopath out for revenge.

Max Cady (De Niro) is released from prison after 14 years behind bars for rape and battery, but he doesn’t have redemption on his mind; Cady wants revenge against his public defender, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte), whom he believes butchered his defence. Cady soon begins tormenting Bowden and his family relentlessly, forcing the lawyer to take drastic action. It all leads up to a nail-biting conclusion set on the eponymous Cape Fear River.

‘Don’t Breathe’ (2016)

Before revitalizing the “Alien” franchise with “Alien: Romulus,” director Fede Álvarez made “Don’t Breathe” a tense and suspenseful thriller that lives up to its name. As the intensity ratchets up, you might find yourself holding your breath. It’s a dark and effective horror-thriller with a stomach-turning twist. Without relying on the bloody mayhem Álvarez was known for after directing the 2013 “Evil Dead” reboot, “Don’t Breathe” thrives thanks to its more grounded tone and a heavy sense of atmosphere.

Set in Detroit, “Don’t Breathe” follows three thieves (Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto) who pick the reclusive Norman (Stephan Lang), a blind war veteran, as their next victim. Due to his age and visual impairment, they think he’ll be an easy mark. They quickly discover, to their horror, that Norman isn’t defenceless, and when they become trapped in his home, they are forced into a desperate battle to survive.

Paramount+ is a contender for best streaming service. But if we're being honest, it's not considered a top-tier streaming service. Or at least, not by most people. When people think of Paramount's streamer, they think of Taylor Sheridan ... and that might be it. Even worse, you probably think of "Yellowstone," which isn't even on Paramount+ — that's on Peacock.

However, that's probably a harsh assessment of Paramount's streaming service. Yes, Sheridanverse shows are a big draw. But so is the NFL and UEFA Champions League. And if you like South Park, it's the home for that iconic series too.

Tom’s Guide’s streaming team is constantly checking out the latest movies and TV shows. That means we're also constantly using and evaluating the various streaming services those movies and shows reside on. So in an effort to share our experience —and to make it so you don't have to test every service yourself — we’ve put together report cards for the biggest streaming services in the U.S., including Paramount+. We've graded each across the most important categories over the past 12 months, including pricing, overall library, original content, and more.

So, without further ado, let's put Paramount+ under the spotlight. And, just as importantly, let's see if it's a streaming service for more than just Taylor Sheridan shows and live sports.

Paramount+: Pricing

Paramount+ comes in just two flavors: Essential and Premium. Both come with 40,000+ episodes and movies, concurrent streaming on three devices, NFL and UEFA Champions League livestreams and UFC fights.

For $8.99 a month, you get Essential, which includes all that plus a few Showtime shows and plenty of ads. For an extra $5 a month, you can upgrade to Premium, ditch the ads, and add 4K streaming, a livestream of your local CBS channel, every Showtime show and movie and you can download shows and movies for offline viewing.

Annoyingly, both of these prices were cheaper 12 months ago. Paramount+ got a price hike back in January 2026. But despite that, it's still one of the cheapest streaming services at just $8.99 a month. Arguably, Netflix (Standard w/ ads) is the only streaming service that offers that much at that price. So Paramount+ still gets points for affordability.

Grade: B

Paramount+: Library

Paramount+ boasts a library of 40,000+ episodes and movies. Many of these have been produced by Paramount over its 114-year history. The media giant produces shows and movies through Paramount Studios, CBS and Skydance, giving it a fairly robust offering on paper.

In practice, though, there's a real chance you don't care about the shows and movies Paramount+ offers.

If you like some older movies, Taylor Sheridan shows and "South Park," then you'll have a great time and have plenty to watch. Ditto for those who like network television comedies and dramas, or reality series such as "Survivor" or "The Challenge." But despite the inclusion of Showtime, it lacks the caliber of newer TV shows that HBO Max and Hulu have to offer, and many older favorites are, unfortunately, on other streaming services when it comes to TV.

Paramount+ also lacks major franchises. This is arguably more a knock against its original content (more on that shortly), but it still hurts the score of its overall library. Disney+, by comparison, at least has Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel to pull from. Paramount+ has "Top Gun" and "Star Trek," and unfortunately, "Star Trek has been more hit than miss lately.

Grade: C+

Paramount+: Originals

When it comes to Paramount+ originals, they largely boil down to a few different categories: Taylor Sheridan shows, "Star Trek," "South Park," Paramount Skydance movies, reality TV and former BET shows (often from Tyler Perry). Most of the original content that the streaming service offers fits in one of those buckets.

Do those work for you? Then great! If you think "Landman" is a masterpiece, loved "Dutton Ranch," and can't wait for more, then you probably feel Paramount+ originals are great. If you love the prolific showrunning talents of Tyler Perry, you're similarly excited that BET+'s shows are now on Paramount+.

There are some shows outside those categories worth checking out, though few and far between. Personally, I love "The Agency," but over the past 12 months, it's one of the few non-Sheridan series I can think of that I watched on Paramount+. Well, that and "Colin from Accounts."

So clearly, Paramount+ knows its audience, gives it what it wants, and not much else. But what about original movies?

Unfortunately, the past 12 months have been rough for Paramount in terms of quality. Normally, being the streaming home to Paramount's new movies would be a positive. However, since Aug. 1, 2026, the best movie it can claim is probably "The Naked Gun." Aside from that, it's been a lot of movies that range from fine to forgettable to even downright bad.

Grade: C

Paramount+: Interface

If you use streaming services even half as much as I do, you have probably come to realize they all have some degree of a terrible user interface. No service gets it totally right. Our highest-rated UI among all the streamers over the past 12 months was Apple TV, and even it only scored a B.

That said, Paramount+ might have the worst interface of the lot. Things start good, for what it's worth. When you log on, you get offered new and trending content, followed quickly by some personalized recommendations and a continue watching bar. All good things.

But then, when you try to watch the show or movie of your choice, that's when things become a problem. Toggling between seasons is a nightmare, especially on a web browser or mobile device. You cannot always fast-forward or rewind either; a truly head-scratching choice.

Grade: D-

Paramount+: Live content

Most streaming services now offer some level of live programming. Netflix, Prime Video and Peacock all offer NFL games, as does Paramount+. But Paramount doesn't stop there.

Right now, if you go to Paramount+, you can watch a robust selection of live sports. NFL, UFC, UEFA Champions League, Serie A, Carabao Cup and even some college football. If you have Paramount+ Premium, you also get some PGA Tour events and WNBA games.

Overall, that's a pretty good selection, especially for the price. NBA games are probably the biggest omission, but getting three of the premier soccer competitions in the world in the form of the Champions League, Serie A and Carabao Cup more than makes up for it. And for those who don't care for soccer, there's still the other kind of football, as well as every UFC event.

Note: This is just an evaluation of the live programming on offer in the U.S. Live programming varies by market.

Grade: A-

Paramount+ overall grade: C+

Overall, Paramount+ is a decent value. At $8.99 a month, it's more affordable than most streaming services, and it doesn't hide much of its content away at that price point.

For most people, though, deciding whether or not to sign up for Paramount+ is going to come down to whether or not you like the shows, movies and live sports on it.

Are you a UFC fan? Then signing up for Paramount+ is a no-brainer. Ditto for those who watch every Taylor Sheridan series with religious fervour. But if you're just looking for one streaming service to rule them all, that you can just log into and replace your cable with, then Paramount+ probably doesn't offer enough to accomplish that goal.

This week’s slate of new movies across the best streaming services offers a strong mixture, with fresh arrivals on the most popular platforms including Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV and Paramount+. Whatever your tastes, there’s (almost certainly) a movie for you.

Arguably the biggest new movie is the Disney+ debut of the latest “Star Wars” adventure, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” but I encourage you not to skip the “smaller” stuff like “Fuze,” an overlooked action-thriller with a neat twist heading over to HBO Max. Other top picks include an acclaimed drama on Netflix, an action-thriller on Prime Video and a buddy-cop adventure flick on Apple TV starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.

There are plenty of options this week, so to save you from spending your time scrolling through streaming service libraries, I’ve collected this week’s most noteworthy new movies below. Plus, we also have a guide to the top new TV shows this week.

‘I Want Your Sex’ (PVOD)

As the name implies, “I Want Your Sex” isn’t shy about its provocative intentions. Described as an “erotic comedy-thriller,” this movie explores BDSM practices, alongside dipping into an exploration of power dynamics and eventually murder. Director Gregg Araki is not above going for shock value. However, the filmmaker's first new feature in 12 years has the substance to back up its provocativeness, with critics rating it 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When Elliot (Cooper Hoffman) lands a coveted job as the assistant for a renowned artist, Erika Tracy (Olivia Wilde), his fantasies come true when she also takes him on as a sexual partner. But the fresh-faced Elliot finds himself out of his depth when Erika brings him into an unfamiliar world of experimental bedroom activities, which eventually leads to obsession, betrayal and even murder. Let’s just say this movie isn’t one for the family!

‘The Runner’ (Prime Video)

Prime Video is closing out its summer original slate with “The Runner,” a new British action-thriller that stars Gal Gadot. Based on the trailer, it doesn’t appear to be trying anything especially new in the genre, but it should be good for 85 minutes of adrenaline-spiking action, and it’s always great to get more female-fronted thrillers. I’m not convinced of its quality (yet), but I’m pretty confident it’ll run straight into the Prime Video top 10.

Maia Marten (Gadot) is a successful attorney living in London. What should have been an ordinary day becomes a frantic race against the clock when her son is abducted. A mysterious caller (Damian Lewis) gives her a series of cryptic commands, and Maia has to race across the city in a desperate bid to save her son. It all sounds as generic as its name, but perhaps “The Runner” will be a pleasant streaming surprise to kick off September.

‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ (Disney+)

The first big-screen “Star Wars” movie in seven years arrives on Disney+ this week, and there’s a certain irony, because I’d argue “this is the way” the Mandalorian movie should be experienced. “The Mandalorian and Grogu” never felt quite at home in theaters, playing out like a condensed fourth season of “The Mandalorian” show. So, if you skipped it in cinemas, you didn’t really miss out; this movie feels made for watching on streaming.

Set between “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens,” the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and his adorable ward, Grogu (aka Baby Yoda), take on a mission for the New Republic to rescue Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White), son of the infamous crime lord Jabba. Naturally, what was supposed to be a simple rescue job becomes a sprawling adventure in this feature-length continuation of the popular Disney+ original show.

‘The President’s Cake’ (Netflix)

If review sites like Rotten Tomatoes determine your watchlist, and you want to know which new streaming arrival this week has the highest score, I’ll cut to the chase: it’s “The President’s Cake.” This Arabic-language drama scores a near-perfect 99% rating with RT’s Critics Consensus labeling it “a tenderly crafted, often devastating portrait of childhood in rural Iraq.” It’s been praised for its complex themes and rich characters.

Set during the Gulf War, where aerial bombardments are a daily occurrence for the Iraqi people, 9-year-old Lamia (Baneen Ahmad Nayyef) and her class are selected to prepare a cake for the upcoming birthday of the country’s leader, Saddam Hussein. In a country gripped by fear and with resources scarce, Lamia sets out to a nearby city to find ingredients.

‘Scary Movie’ (Paramount+)

“Scary Movie” returned this year, and the horror-spoof series hasn’t matured with age. It remains as lowbrow as ever. Its sights are set on lampooning modern horror trends, such as legacy sequels that drop the number in their titles (hence why this isn’t called “Scary Movie 6). Targets this time include recent genre hits like “Weapons,” “Sinners,” “Get Out” and “The Substance,” alongside poking fun at the series favorite target, “Scream.”

2026’s “Scary Movie” also marks the return of the Wayans, who originally left the franchise after 2002’s “Scary Movie 2.” Also back are stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall. The plot is simple, as you would expect from the franchise, and is merely a vehicle to cram in as many parodies and references as possible. In 2026, “Scary Movie” feels a little outdated, but those who long for the days when parody movies were released regularly might see this as a fun throwback.

‘Fuze’ (HBO Max)

Director David Mackenzie, the filmmaker behind last year’s excellent thriller “Relay,” is back in the genre already with “Fuze.” This crime-thriller doesn’t reach the same heights, but with an audacious heist at its core, it’s a movie that will keep you hooked. Plus, if you’re the type of person who demands shocking twists, I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I can confirm there’s a big reveal in “Fuze” that totally flips the script.

Set in present-day London, a portion of the city is forced to evacuate when an unexploded World War II bomb is discovered on a construction site. Among the military squad called in to defuse the bomb is Major Will Tranter (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). However, in the chaos, a group of criminals led by Giorgos "George" Karalis (Theo James) uses the evacuation as a distraction to pull off a bank heist. But as the authorities circle, alliances are questioned and morals tested.

‘Mayday’ (Apple TV)

Apple TV has earned a reputation for quality original series in recent years, but it’s yet to find the same success with its direct-to-streaming movies. Perhaps “Mayday” could be the start of a hot streak in this area, as this Apple original movie features a solid pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. At the very least, it can’t be as bad as “Ghosted,” right?

Apple is labeling “Mayday” a “genre-bending, action-packed buddy comedy that flips the spy thriller on its head,” which reads like marketing buzzword bingo. In this Apple original, Reynolds plays a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot, assigned to a top-secret mission in Russian territory during the height of the Cold War. When the mission goes wrong, he’s stuck behind enemy lines, but finds an unexpected ally in an ex-KGB agent (Branagh), who is obsessed with American culture.

Prime Video’s top 10 most-watched movies list has been updated over the weekend, and it’s a great starting point if you’re looking for something to watch on the Amazon-owned streaming service. However, current popularity doesn’t necessarily mean a movie is worthwhile. It’s not uncommon for subpar picks to land in the Prime Video top 10.

That’s why I’ve combed through the current Prime Video top 10 to find the entries that deserve to be on your watchlist this week. My selections include a high-concept comedy, a sun-soaked romantic drama, and a classic caper that stars the late-great Dolly Parton. Give these a watch this week.

This article is based on the Prime Video top 10 as of Monday, August 31, and with that housekeeping out of the way, let’s dive into my top picks.

Best Prime Video top 10 movies to stream right now

‘The Last Sunrise’ (2026)

As the summer season draws to a close, Prime Video is offering up one final sun-soaked escape in “The Last Sunrise.” This romantic drama is based on Anna Todd’s novel of the same name and stars Maia Reficco, Fernando Líndez and Eva Longoria. It’s your typical girl-meets-boy movie, but its lack of original ideas hasn’t stopped it from climbing to the top of Prime Video's top 10; it has been locked at No.1 since last week.

Ry (Reficco) and her overprotective mother (Longoria) move from America to Mallorca, Spain, where stunning beaches and unexpected romance await. Ry soon meets a charming local, Juliàn (Líndez), and the two begin a passionate love affair. But Ry is dealing with chronic health conditions, and when her condition worsens and long-hidden family secrets come to light, the pair's intense romance might not survive until the end of the summer.

‘Good Fortune’ (2025)

“Good Fortune” is an enjoyable high-concept comedy starring Seth Rogen, Aziz Ansari, Keke Palmer and Keanu Reeves. It touches on wealth inequality, the gig economy, and the growing class divide without ever fully exploring these pressing issues. Still, it approaches its topical subject with optimistic eyes, and Reeves is particularly wonderful as a hapless guardian angel.

Writer and director Aziz Ansari also stars as Arj, an aspiring filmmaker, working low-paid jobs to get by. One such job is working as an assistant for a wealthy venture capitalist, Jeff (Rogen). But when Jeff fires Arj, the gig-worker hits rock bottom. In steps Gabriel (Reeves), a low-level guardian angel desperate to prove himself to his superiors. When Gabriel meddles in Arj's and Jeff's lives, he makes a mess that proves very tough to clean up.

‘Nine to Five’ (1980)

It’s no surprise to see “Nine to Five” in the Prime Video top 10. This classic 1980s comedy caper stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and the beloved Dolly Parton. The “Queen of Country” passed away last week at the age of 80, with an outpouring of love for everything Dolly accomplished across her remarkable life and career. So, it’s clear to see why Prime Video subscribers are turning to this movie as the world mourns the passing of a true icon.

This comedy centers on three women (Fonda, Tomlin and Parton) who have all been wronged by their boss, Franklin Hart (Dabney Coleman), the vice president of a fictional conglomerate. Fed up with being treated unfairly in a male-dominated workplace, the trio decides to take matters into their own hands and hatch a scheme to kidnap Hart and run the company as they see fit. And yes, it features Dolly’s enduring pop song of the same name.

Summer is winding down already, and if you're anything like me, you've been curled up on the couch weathering this heat wave in the glorious AC. Prime Video had an especially strong slate these past few months, so there's been no shortage of ways to spend a weekend inside. However, even the best streaming services churn out duds from time to time.

To see which Prime Video originals are worth your time, we created a poll asking for the best Prime Video movies and shows of the summer so far. More than 5,400 readers weighed in, giving us an interesting snapshot of what audiences have been loving this summer.

Taking home the crown was "Ride or Die" with 1,863 votes (34%), Prime Video's action comedy series created by comedian and writer Tessa Coates. Coming in a distant second with less than half the votes (786 votes, 14%) was the true crime documentary series "Murder 101." Finishing just behind it is "Every Year After" with 705 votes (13%), proving that Prime Video viewers still have a soft spot for glossy romances. Prime Video's adaptation of the iconic anime "The Ghost in the Shell" came next with 503 votes (9%).

Prime Video is one of the most popular options among the best streaming services. Or, rather, it's one of the most widely used. Whether or not you like Amazon's premier streamer, chances are that you probably have it. And that's because it's included free with Amazon Prime. But just because it's free doesn't mean it's good.

Tom’s Guide’s streaming team is constantly checking out the latest movies and TV shows. That means we're also constantly using and evaluating the various streaming services those movies and shows reside on. So in an effort to share our experience — and so you don't have to test every service yourself — we’ve put together report cards for the biggest streaming services in the U.S., including Prime Video. We've graded each across the most important categories over the past 12 months, including pricing, overall library, original content, and more.

So, without further ado, let's put Prime Video under the spotlight. And, just as importantly, let's see if it's a streaming service worth using regularly, whether it's free or not.

Prime Video: Pricing

Prime Video is technically the cheapest streaming service among its competitors. That's because if you have Amazon Prime already, Prime Video is included with your subscription.

If you don't have Amazon Prime, though, you can still subscribe to Prime Video. At $8.99 for an ad-supported tier, the price is still on the lower end of the streaming services. Are you getting the best value for your money? Perhaps not. But on price alone, it's tough to ding Prime Video's entry-level tier.

Similarly, Prime Video Ultra is relatively reasonably priced. For just $4.99 extra a month, you get to ditch ads, add 4K streaming and stream on two more devices. You also get to download an additional 75 movies or episodes.

Again, can you argue it's frustrating that Ultra now costs nearly twice as much as the $2.99 it used to cost to ditch ads? Especially since Prime Video didn't used to have ads at all? Absolutely. But, setting that aside, compared to other streaming services, getting to ditch ads and stream in 4K for just $5 a month extra is considered a good deal.

Grade: A-

Prime Video: Library

Prime Video's library may not feel like it's on par with Netflix, but it actually surpasses the streaming giant in terms of sheer size. This is likely due to the inclusion of free, ad-supported content on Prime Video that doesn't require a subscription, but even then, it's got an impressive 20,000+ movies and thousands of episodes of television.

Within those tens of thousands of hours to watch, there are also plenty of quality titles. If you read our Prime Video coverage regularly, you'll find that every week we're able to recommend new shows and movies, and that every month Prime Video adds at least a handful of critically acclaimed films to its library.

That said, we've found that while Prime Video's library wins when it comes to quantity, it often comes up short in quality. While it now has MGM's library to pull from (though it bafflingly keeps some MGM titles strictly on MGM+), it doesn't have the same well of content to pull from that HBO Max, Peacock and Paramount+ do.

It also lacks major franchises. This is arguably more a knock against its original content (more on that shortly), but it still hurts the score of its overall library. Disney+, by comparison, at least has Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel to pull from. Prime Video has "The Boys," "Project Hail Mary" and whatever movies it can license from other studios. Often, that's just not enough to edge out the competition.

Grade: C+

Prime Video: Originals

As I just alluded to, Prime Video sometimes comes up short in original content. It doesn't have any major franchises, save James Bond, and it still hasn't put out a single Bond movie or show since acquiring the rights to 007. Unless you count the reality-competition show "007: Road to a Million."

However, over the past 12 months, Prime Video has had some originals worth bragging about. "Fallout," "The Boys," and "Reacher" (which technically just missed our 12-month window of August 2025-2026) are all must-see TV. Shows like "Cross" and "House of David" have fervent fan bases. It's also managed to carve out a younger audience with shows like "56 Days," "Off Campus," and the very popular "The Summer I Turned Pretty."

So clearly, Prime Video is getting things right when it comes to TV, even if it isn't exactly competing with HBO just yet. But what about original movies?

Typically, this has been a weak spot for the streaming service, and the past 12 months have had some rough patches. In terms of Amazon movies, only "Hedda" really managed to leave an impression on me.

However, Amazon owns MGM Studios, and I think it's fair to count the MGM films as originals. "Project Hail Mary" is still considered one of the best movies of the year, and "Crime 101" (technically a co-production with Sony) was a pleasant surprise earlier this year. Is this as impressive as what Warner Bros. and Universal are putting out? No. But it is a noticeable step forward.

Grade: B-

Prime Video: Interface

Let's address the elephant in the room. Every streaming service has some degree of a terrible user interface. None of them get it totally right. Our highest-rated one among all the streamers over the past 12 months was Apple TV, and even it only scored a B.

That said, Prime Video's UI is still awful. If you Google "Prime Video interface," the results are not complimentary. If I log on right now, I'll get a carousel of popular titles Prime wants me to watch and a row of shows and movies to continue watching. And that's about where the interface stops being good.

Want personalized recommendations? Tough luck. Looking for live sports? Better hope there's a massive game on; otherwise, you're relegated to tabbing over to the Sports menu in the top navigation bar.

But the worst part might be that not everything that appears on Prime Video's user interface is available to Prime subscribers. Prime Video offers subscriptions to other streaming services, as well as movies to buy or rent, and it just sprinkles these throughout its UI wherever it wants. There is a Prime menu in the top navigation bar, but I shouldn't have to put in the work to filter shows and movies. I'm paying the streaming service to provide me with content to watch, not content I can't.

Grade: D-

Prime Video: Live content

At this point, most people probably know that Prime Video offers Thursday Night Football. It's a marquee program for the streaming service. But it's far from the only live programming that Prime Video offers.

In addition to NFL games, Prime Video also offers a selection of NBA and WNBA games. It offers G League games as well, for those in desperate need of basketball. There's also a decent selection of National Women's Soccer League matches. In select U.S. markets, you can also get baseball (New York) or hockey (Seattle).

So, no, Prime Video may not have everything. It notably lacks college football, college basketball, or any major soccer tournaments save the NWSL. But between the NFL, NBA and some niche leagues, it has enough for most people to casually watch sports.

Prime Video overall grade: C+

Overall, it really helps that Prime Video is so affordable. If you had to pay $10.99, which is the entry-level price for HBO Max, I don't know if I could recommend it to most people. But it's not $10.99. Instead, it's free with Amazon Prime, which also comes with other perks, and just $4.99 a month more for Prime Video Ultra.

Besides, it's not like there's nothing to watch on Prime Video. Sure, the selection of quality programming is slim, despite the literal tens of thousands of options to choose from. But there are enough must-watch shows and a few original or exclusive movies that you'll find something to watch. If you can't, you still might find an NFL, NBA, WNBA or NWSL game to enjoy.

How is September almost here? Soon summer will continue on only in our hearts and lingering sun burns. Prime Video released a few new movies this week, including the German-comedy "Back to the '90s" and the young adult romantic drama "The Last Sunrise" that's guaranteed to break your heart, but it's slim pickings on the TV front.

Thankfully, August has been a banner month for TV releases on Prime Video, so there's still plenty of bingeworthy shows to catch up on this weekend. With so many shows to choose from, it can be hard to narrow down what to watch next. That's why I'm rounding up the best of the bunch to help you skip the scrolling and get to streaming. Of everything added, these are the three worth adding to your watchlist: Alan Ritchson's high-octane return in "Reacher" season 4, the messy YA drama "Sterling Point" that has everyone buzzing, and the surprisingly wholesome crossover episode you never expected, "The Chosen in the Wild with Bear Grylls."

'Reacher' season 4

What it's about: Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is back in Philadelphia, where he gets caught up in a deadly conspiracy after witnessing a woman (Karen Kwong-Chip) kill herself on the subway. Before she dies, she appears to slip something to Reacher, putting him in the crosshairs of federal agents and the CIA. As he digs into the woman's background, it leads back to some ugly truths that incriminate not only the top brass, but those closest to him.

Why you should watch it: Season 4 of this viral crime thriller (which adapts Lee Child’s "Gone Tomorrow") delivers everything fans have come to expect — and much of that success boils down to Alan Ritchson, who proves yet again to be a pitch perfect Reacher. We're halfway into the season now, but there's still plenty of time to catch up before the finale. And after Wednesday's bombshell ending, it's shaping up to be a season unlike any other.

'Sterling Point'

What it's about: "Sterling Point" is a grounded YA mystery drama starring Ella Rubin as Annie Jacobson, a 17-year-old who unexpectedly inherits a remote island in Canada from her estranged grandfather. Determined to figure out why he left the property to her, she secretly travels there and begins to investigate her family's past. But as she unearths secrets that maybe should have stayed buried, she finds herself caught in a love triangle and discovers that a local girl named Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle) may have a surprising connection to her own family.

Why you should watch it: "Sterling Point" debuted with a strong 91% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and has been getting plenty of buzz online — enough to secure a second season, as Prime Video confirmed this week. This messy coming-of-age drama is an easy show to get lost in, and with just eight episodes, it’s practically tailor-made to suck up a lazy weekend.

'The Chosen in the Wild with Bear Grylls'

What it's about: The famous survivalist Bear Grylls takes Jesus and his followers on some grueling adventures through the Utah desert. Well, sort of. Rather, he's joined by the actors who play them in "The Chosen," the hit series about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Showrunner Dallas Jenkins also joins in the final episode to suffer through his share of trials and tribulations. While they're braving the wilderness, they open up about faith and the challenges they’ve faced in conversations that feel surprisingly natural given the reality show set-up.

Why you should watch it: This show feels made in a lab for men with religious trauma, and that's not a dig — I'm married to one and recommended it to him. It's not particularly challenging or deep, instea soothing watch to throw on in the background that's surprisingly wholesome at moments. Its focus on men being open and vulnerable about their feelings gives it more substance than the typical Bear Grylls survival show you might expect.

There's no shortage of ways to spend a weekend on the couch, and this month Prime Video is making a strong case for staying put while August gives way to September. Amazon's streaming service has loaded up its library with new movies for this weekend, with a few that are absolutely worth your time.

Rather than make you dig for the good stuff, I've pulled out three films that stand above the rest, and they couldn't be more different from one another. There's "Is God Is," a revenge thriller that critics have fallen hard for. There's "Back to the 90s," a goofy, good-hearted time-travel comedy about a boy band lost in the wrong decade. And there's "The Last Sunrise," a tender summer romance set against the beaches of Mallorca, from Anna Todd. Yes, that Anna Todd.

'Is God Is'

What it's about: Twin sisters Racine (Kara Young) and Anaia (Mallori Johnson) were burned and scarred as small children in a fire they barely survived. Now 21, they're summoned to the Deep South to the deathbed of their dying mother, a woman known only as "She," or "God," who's covered in scars of her own. She tells them the truth: their father set the fire that disfigured all three of them. Now, she wants them to make him pay. The sisters take up arms and set out to take revenge on the man who ruined their lives.

Why you should watch it: This genre-bending revenge thriller is one of the most acclaimed films of the year. It's currently sitting at an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. But if critic reviews don't mean much to you, you won't want to miss Kara Young and Mallori Johnson as the two scorned sisters.

'Back to the 90's'

What it's about: Five childhood friends, Matteo, Jonas, Chris, Ben and Oliver, have shared a dream since they were kids: making it big as a boy band. Just as their shot at stardom finally comes within reach, one of them threatens to walk away. But things get much stranger as all five of them are flung back in time, only to land in the middle of the 1990s. Stuck in another decade, they have to figure out what real friendship means and what it actually takes to make it as a band.

Why you should watch it: This German time-travel comedy is a bright, feel-good crowd-pleaser. And for those of you who can't get enough of boy-band nostalgia, you can travel back to your BSB or*Nsync days and relive them vicariously through this flick.

'The Last Sunrise'

What it's about: Ry (Maia Reficco) is a college student living with a chronic illness who heads off for a summer in Mallorca with her mother (Eva Longoria), hoping for an escape. What she doesn't count on is Julián (Fernando Lindez), a local who pulls her out of her shell and teaches her to live in the moment. But as her condition worsens and family secrets start to surface, the perfect summer she's found threatens to fall apart before it's over.

Why you should watch it: Based on the best-selling novel by Anna Todd (After), this is the next best thing to the angsty teen romance. If you've had your nose buried in sweaty, smut-filled prose all summer, this is a no-brainer. It's a swoony, sun-soaked summer romance in the vein of "The Fault in Our Stars," and it'll make you cry and yearn all at the same time.

Summer is almost behind us, and for me, September officially marks the beginning of fall. As the days get shorter and the weather starts to cool, streaming services like Prime Video are already looking ahead to the colder months. That means swapping out some of those quintessential summer movies for cozier watches, autumnal favorites, and plenty of new movies and shows to settle in with as the seasons change.

Prime Video’s September 2026 lineup is now fully revealed, and I’ve rounded up the biggest releases worth keeping an eye on, from major new arrivals to some of the month’s most anticipated titles. That includes a new spinoff series set in the world of “Reacher,” an adrenaline-fueled action-thriller, and a romantic comedy based on Ali Hazelwood’s novel.

Here are my standout picks for the month, followed by the full list of everything coming to Prime Video throughout September 2026.

‘The Runner’ (September 2)

Prime Video is known to have plenty of action-thrillers, from “Reacher” to “The Terminal List,” so it’s no surprise we’re getting another in the form of “The Runner.” This original movie feels like “Speed” meets “Taken.” It’s built on a ruthless premise that demands constant motion, meaning if the protagonist stops running, the consequences are instantly fatal. Clocking in at a brisk 84 minutes, the film seems to cut out all filler to deliver a non-stop burst of suspense.

Maia Marten (Gal Gadot) is a successful London lawyer whose morning jog takes a terrifying turn when she receives a call telling her that her young son has been kidnapped. The anonymous caller gives Maia a series of instructions she must follow if she wants to see him again, forcing her to race across London on foot. As the demands become increasingly dangerous, Maia is pushed further out of her comfort zone while trying to work out who is behind the kidnapping.

‘The Grand Tour’ (September 13)

This new chapter of “The Grand Tour” marks a major new beginning for the global motoring franchise. Shifting gears from the old-school pub banter of the original trio, the new era leans into a faster, slightly absurd, digital-first style of humor while keeping the spirit of wild road trips. The atmospheric core is built around putting totally unsuitable cars into unforgiving environments, like racing track cars across African deserts or testing high-performance vehicles against fighter jets.

“The Grand Tour” returns with a brand-new presenting trio as Francis Bourgeois joins James Engelsman and Thomas Holland for a six-episode motoring adventure. The new hosts travel across the globe, putting a range of unusual and high-performance cars through increasingly ambitious challenges. Their journey takes them from the deserts of Angola to Malaysia and California, where they explore local car culture, test cutting-edge vehicles and take on some seriously unconventional tasks.

‘Neagley’ (September 16)

For the first time, “Reacher” is getting its own spinoff with “Neagley,” which expands Prime Video’s massive action universe. Maria Sten steps into the spotlight to lead the series, reprising her fan-favorite role as the brilliant former 110th Special Investigations sergeant. The show is overseen directly by “Reacher” creator Nick Santora alongside Nicholas Wootton, ensuring the same hard-hitting, fast-paced DNA. Even better, Prime Video is dropping all 8 episodes at once on premiere day.

Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) is a former member of the Army’s 110th Special Investigations Unit who now works as a private investigator in Chicago. When someone she once knew and cared about dies in what appears to be a suspicious accident, Neagley refuses to accept the official explanation. She begins investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, drawing on her military experience and the skills she developed alongside Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson).

‘You+Me - Against the World’ (September 18)

If you’re a romance fan, you’ll want to stay tuned for “You+Me - Against the World.” This French original film is clearly designed to capitalize on the massive global success of modern romantic thrillers. It’s adapted directly from the runaway hit book trilogy by popular French author Emma Green, which sold nearly a million copies across France. This film isn’t like standard campus romances, though, since the story is driven by an unidentified figure watching them from the shadows, threatening to expose life-ruining secrets.

Alma Lancaster (Vittoria Di Savoia) is an 18-year-old university student from a wealthy family who believes she is studying law, while she secretly follows her ambition of becoming a filmmaker. Her life changes when she meets Vadim Arcadi (Lucas Barski), a rebellious 20-year-old student with a troubled past. When the pair are forced to work together on a student film, their initial clashes gradually turn into a relationship neither expected. However, their growing connection is complicated when someone begins watching them.

‘The Love Hypothesis’ (September 23)

One of the biggest releases this month has to be “The Love Hypothesis,” a major book-to-screen romantic comedy that could be a standout for the fall. The film is adapted from Ali Hazelwood’s 2021 New York Times bestselling novel, which originally began as a viral internet fan-fiction sensation before becoming a huge hit in the contemporary romance world. I have fairly high hopes for the adaptation, too, given that it was directed by Claire Scanlon, who previously helmed the incredible Netflix rom-com “Set It Up.”

Olive Smith (Lili Reinhart) is a Ph.D. candidate whose life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers that her best friend, Ahn (Rachel Marsh), has feelings for Olive’s crush. Hoping to convince Ahn that she has moved on, Olive impulsively kisses intimidating biology professor Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman). When the incident sparks rumors around campus, Adam suggests they pretend to be a couple, giving them both something to gain from the arrangement. Soon, these rules become increasingly difficult to follow.

I'm honestly just surprised it's taken THIS long for me to hear about it, because "A Vigilante" is right up my alley. It sounds like an even more violent version of 2020's "Promising Young Woman," and it came out two years earlier. A domestic abuse survivor herself, Wilde's character helps victims escape their abusive partners. But when her sadistic husband shows up in her motel room out of the blue, only one of them will walk away from the brutal showdown that follows.

'Kick-ass' (2010)

The vibe: Off-brand MCU meets “Kill Bill” with the humor of "Deadpool"
Rotten Tomatoes score: 78%

Until the first "Avengers," "Kick-Ass" was my No. 1 superhero movie. Then I finally saw "John Wick" and "Kill Bill" and realized that my favorite parts, the deliriously choreographed fight scenes, were easily eclipsed by their inspiration. Still, I'll always have a soft spot for "Kick-Ass," which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Dave, an ordinary high school student who decides to become a real-life crime fighter, his lack of experience or physical prowess be damned! After he throws together a homemade costume, calling himself Kick-Ass, and tries to stop criminals, his horrible first attempt goes viral online, turning him into a local celebrity and putting him on a collision course with the professional heroes: Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz).

'Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest' (1992)

The vibe: A cozy, rainy summer afternoon ("perfect napping weather," as my mom would call it)
Rotten Tomatoes score: 67%

For a healthy dose of nostalgia, look no further than "Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest," an animated classic set in the heart of an Australian rainforest where fairies live. After being taught all her life that humans are extinct, Crysta (Samantha Mathis) discovers one and accidentally shrinks him down to her size. Together, they witness the harsh realities of environmental damage caused by the logging company he works for. Their fight takes a supernatural turn when pollution incarnate, aka Hexxus, a sentient smog monster voiced by Tim Curry, sets its sights on Crysta's home.

We’re currently in the era of yearning and passionate romance, and Prime Video is very much aware of what genre fans want. The streaming service has made plenty of romantic dramas that play into complicated love triangles, unresolved feelings, or what it means to actually yearn for someone. Even so, with summer coming to an end, the timing feels especially fitting for its new original “The Last Sunrise,” a movie adapted from Anna Todd’s 2025 novel of the same name. If you didn’t know, Todd is best known as the author of the “After” series.

As someone equally passionate about the romance genre as I am about horror (insane contrast, I know), I get quite picky about what I want from a specific film or show. I’m not familiar with the book, so I went into “The Last Sunrise” not really knowing what to expect. And while that may have boosted my enjoyment just a little bit, I can ultimately say that this movie is not the strongest way to end summer. For those who love a good bit of yearning and drama, they might be disappointed, although at least the film has Mallorca’s stunning golden beaches to look at.

This summer in general hasn’t been amazing in terms of romance, and while Prime Video has delivered a few hits like “Off Campus” and “Every Year After,” there haven’t been many memorable films for those who just want to switch off and enjoy a good movie night. If you’re curious about “The Last Sunrise,” here are my honest thoughts on Prime Video’s new original and whether it deserves to join the ranks of summer’s most compelling romances.

‘The Last Sunrise’ has plenty of romance, but not enough yearning

When I say yearning is the new way forward for the romance genre, I really mean it. The intense longing for someone you know you shouldn’t (or can’t) be with is practically the currency that fuels chatter on social media, and one of the biggest reasons why “Off Campus” took off in a matter of days. For me, yearning allows a story to actually slow down and explore the complex feelings behind these characters, which is why “The Last Sunrise” didn’t quite hit the mark.

“The Last Sunrise” centers around Oriah “Ry” Pera (Maia Reficco), a young woman living with chronic health issues and an overprotective mother (Eva Longoria), who travels to Mallorca and unexpectedly falls for a charming local named Julián (Fernando Lindez), forcing her to confront her health and what she really wants from life before she has to return home. Yearning could have been one of the strongest ways to make this premise work, especially given Ry’s knowledge of her illness and the fact that Julián doesn’t initially know what she’s dealing with.

Instead, I found the romance incredibly rushed, with the two getting together so quickly that there wasn’t enough time to really sit with the complicated feelings behind their relationship or the fact that Ry knows their time together could be limited.

One of the film’s strongest moments actually comes early on, during a nightclub scene where Julián watches Ry dance with someone else, allowing the attraction between them to slowly brew. It’s in those tense moments that the premise starts to feel much more compelling, and I wish the movie had leaned into that side of their relationship far more.

There’s also the fact that Fernando Lindez unfortunately doesn’t play Julián all that convincingly, with his interactions often lacking the passion and emotional intensity needed to sell the central relationship. Interestingly, the more compelling relationship for me was actually the one between Ry and her mother, Izzy.

There’s a genuine tension between them because Izzy is constantly conscious of whether her daughter is taking her medication, while Ry resists because the meds make her feel numb. What makes this dynamic work is that neither of them is necessarily wrong: Ry wants to experience life, while her mother’s concern comes from a very real place of worry.

Another issue is that “The Last Sunrise” almost seems to forget about the consequences of Ry not taking her medication. Early in the film, a doctor explicitly warns that stopping her medication could be damaging, yet those repercussions are largely pushed to the side until the very end, conveniently arriving just as the drama finally starts to ramp up. Because of this, the romance never really carries the sense of urgency that the premise promises. Instead, it often feels like the movie is rushing through as many familiar romantic tropes as possible before the end credits roll.

To give this movie some credit, “The Last Sunrise” definitely feels like a summer movie, with its golden lighting, stunning locations, beautiful beaches and strong sense of Spanish music and culture. The cinematography is smooth, too, and there’s a lot to like about the way the film is put together, even if the story itself and the central relationship ultimately let it down. Still, “The Last Sunrise” does manage to evoke some genuinely teary moments, and those looking for a classic, cookie-cutter romance with a familiar story and plenty of emotion will likely find something to enjoy here.

Verdict: ‘The Last Sunrise’ is a missed opportunity

“The Last Sunrise” is a missed opportunity because there’s genuinely a lot to like here, from its gorgeous Mallorca setting and summery cinematography to a premise that could have delivered a much more emotionally layered romance. Unfortunately, the rushed relationship and lack of convincing chemistry mean the film never quite captures the yearning or urgency at the heart of its story.

That said, it’s not a terrible film by any means, and I can absolutely see it pleasing those looking for a cheesy, easy summer flick that doesn’t require too much thought. If you’re after something light, predictable and occasionally tear-jerking to watch while soaking up the last of those summer vibes, “The Last Sunrise” will probably do the job on Prime Video.

Still holding strong at No. 1 on Prime Video is “Reacher,” the popular action-thriller adapted from Lee Child’s bestselling book series. Developed for television by showrunner Nick Santora, the series leans heavily into classic action tropes, making it very much a show for dads, which is never a bad thing. The fourth season adapts Gone Tomorrow, the 13th book, with star Alan Ritchson teasing it as the “bloodiest and best” run yet. If you’re looking for something thrilling to watch this week, “Reacher” is an ideal choice.

Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is in Philadelphia when a chance encounter with a distressed stranger on the subway pulls him into a dangerous mystery. After the encounter ends in tragedy, Reacher discovers that a missing flash drive containing highly sensitive information is at the center of the case. As government agents and a team of professional soldiers race to find it, Reacher joins forces with Tamara (Sydelle Noel), Jacob (Christopher Marquette) and others to uncover who is behind the operation.

‘Sterling Point’

“Sterling Point” is a coming-of-age mystery-drama series that’s officially returning for season 2. Following its success on Prime Video, we’re set to delve deeper into this world of teen mystery and yearning, and I have no doubt it could become a long-running favorite for viewers who enjoy a good mystery. The renewal came after a breakout debut, with the series becoming Prime Video’s No. 1 global series debut of the summer. Season 2 will return to the Muskoka setting and pick up on lingering plot points, so there’s plenty more story to come for those who want to see what happens next.

Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin), a New York City teenager, unexpectedly inherits a remote island in Canada from the estranged grandfather she was never allowed to meet. After receiving a mysterious letter, Annie travels to Sterling Point to uncover more about her family’s past. But when she arrives, she discovers the island is already occupied by Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle), a girl with an unexpected connection to Annie’s family. As Annie settles into life on the island alongside her twin brother Connor (Keen Ruffalo), she becomes caught up in complicated relationships.

‘Extinct’

If you enjoy good post-apocalyptic sci-fi, you’ll likely have a good time with “Extinct.” Created and written by prominent sci-fi author Orson Scott Card alongside his frequent collaborator Aaron Johnston, the series also works well as a survival drama. Although it was unfortunately canceled after one season, the finale wraps up some of the immediate plot threads without leaving the story completely unresolved. Following the show’s cancellation, co-creator Orson Scott Card went on to write books set in the same universe, expanding on the story.

Four hundred years after an alien race wipes out humanity, three people, Ezra (Chad Michael Collins), Feena (Victoria Atkin) and Abram (Yorke Fryer), are mysteriously brought back to life by another alien civilization. Finding themselves on an abandoned Earth, the newly revived humans must learn to survive while trying to understand why they were chosen. As they explore their unfamiliar surroundings, they encounter advanced alien technology, remnants of the old human world and a dangerous group known as the Skin Riders.

‘Scarface’ (1983)

Directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone, “Scarface” is the ultimate crime epic of 1980s excess, greed, and paranoia. The film is a loose, updated remake of Howard Hawks’ 1932 mob classic, shifting the setting from Prohibition-era Chicago to 1980s Miami and its drug cartels. Al Pacino gives an explosive, unhinged performance as Tony Montana, and the film also marked a major breakout for Michelle Pfeiffer as Elvira Hancock, alongside standout performances from Steven Bauer and Robert Loggia.

Tony Montana (Al Pacino) is a Cuban refugee who arrives in Miami during the 1980 Mariel boatlift. After escaping a refugee camp, Tony and his friend Manny (Steven Bauer) become involved in the city’s cocaine trade, working for drug lord Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia). Tony quickly rises through the ranks, taking increasingly dangerous jobs and eventually building his own powerful drug empire. As his wealth and influence grow, he becomes one of Miami’s biggest cocaine suppliers, but his increasingly reckless decisions bring him into conflict.

‘Green Room’ (2016)

One of the best dark thrillers of all time is “Green Room,” which takes a simple nightmare scenario and turns the screws until you can barely breathe. It’s one of those rare films that leaves you feeling genuinely uneasy long after the violence begins. Even as someone who has watched plenty of horror, I found myself needing to pause at certain points just to take a moment and process what I’d seen. Its relentless intensity and brutal set pieces make for an incredibly immersive experience, made even stronger by a fantastic ensemble cast.

The Ain’t Rights, a struggling punk band nearing the end of a disastrous tour, accept a last-minute gig at a remote club in Oregon. After their performance, bassist Pat (Anton Yelchin) returns to the backstage green room and accidentally witnesses a murder. The band is immediately locked inside the room by the club’s armed staff, who are determined to eliminate anyone who saw what happened. With no way to call for help and surrounded by heavily armed men, Pat, Sam (Alia Shawkat), Reece (Joe Cole) and Tiger (Callum Turner) must find a way to escape.

‘The Mist’ (2007)

“The Mist” has one of the most infamous plot-twist endings ever made, and if you don’t already know about it or haven’t seen the crazy memes, now is the time to experience the chaos for yourself. It’s essentially an unforgiving psychological creature feature that turns a simple supermarket into a pressure cooker of human desperation. While Lovecraftian horrors lurk outside in the whiteout fog, the real monster is the rapidly fracturing human psychology inside. It also marked Frank Darabont’s third adaptation of a Stephen King story.

Following a violent storm in the small town of Bridgton, Maine, David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son Billy head to a local supermarket for supplies. Their trip takes a terrifying turn when a thick, mysterious mist suddenly engulfs the town, trapping them inside with dozens of other shoppers. Soon, the survivors discover that deadly creatures are lurking within the fog, making it dangerous to venture outside. As supplies run low and escape seems impossible, David joins a small group attempting to find a way out.

‘Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret’ (2023)

If you’re in the mood for something a little more charming and lighthearted, “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” should be on your watchlist. This is a warm, deeply empathetic coming-of-age masterclass that pulls off the near-impossible task of adapting the beloved 1970 young adult novel while making its themes feel timeless. Despite an underperforming theatrical run amid a crowded spring box office, it debuted to universal acclaim, currently holding a near-perfect 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

When 11-year-old Margaret Simon (Abby Ryder Fortson) moves with her parents from New York City to a New Jersey suburb, she has to start over at a new school and make new friends. She quickly joins a group of girls led by Nancy (Elle Graham), who are eager to grow up and experience their first bras, periods and kisses. Meanwhile, Margaret begins a school project exploring religion, as her mother is Christian and her father is Jewish. Her questions become more complicated when she learns about a rift between her mother and grandparents.

‘The Hurt Locker’ (2009)

Lastly, we’re ending on a high with the Oscar-winning “The Hurt Locker.” It was nominated for nine Oscars and won six Academy Awards, including the night’s biggest honors, Best Picture and Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow. Her win was a landmark moment in cinema history, making her the first woman ever to win the award. “The Hurt Locker” also saw Jeremy Renner deliver his career-breakout performance, with the rest of the cast featuring early-career performances from Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty.

Set in Baghdad during the Iraq War, Staff Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner) takes over an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit after its previous leader is killed while attempting to disarm an improvised explosive device. Joined by Sergeant J.T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty), James leads the team through a series of increasingly dangerous missions, dealing with roadside bombs, armed insurgents and booby-trapped vehicles. James’ unconventional approach to bomb disposal repeatedly puts the team in dangerous situations.

August is drawing to a close, but there’s still time to stream some of the most popular thriller movies recently added to Prime Video. The streaming service has added a steady slew of new picks for subscribers to enjoy in recent weeks, and I’m picking out a trio that left a strong impression.

Whatever type of thriller you prefer, there is a pick for you below, from an action effort set across a frozen lake to a detective mystery through the dark streets of Scotland. There’s also an intense cat-and-mouse game with the final film performance of James Van Der Beek.

‘Icefall’ (2025)

“Icefall” might have released to little fanfare last November, but it’s carving out a sizeable audience now that it’s available to stream on Prime Video. This Joel Kinnaman-fronted action-thriller even briefly dethroned “Masters of the Universe” for the No. 1 spot in the platform’s top 10 most-watched. While He-Man has since reclaimed the top position, it proves that Prime Video subscribers find the movie’s pitch very appealing.

Set across the frozen wilderness, a younger ranger, Ani (Cara Jade Myers), arrests a mysterious poacher, Harlan (Kinnaman), who is living off the land to escape his traumatic past. However, when masked criminals attack, the two are forced to strike up an uneasy alliance. The assailants are hunting for a crashed plane holding millions of dollars in cash, and Harlan and Ani will need to put their differences aside if they want to survive the ordeal.

‘Damaged’ (2024)

“Damaged” is another thriller movie that’s been moving up the Prime Video top 10 list this week. The critical reviews aren’t so impressive (it scores a very poor 27% on Rotten Tomatoes). However, it does star Samuel L. Jackson, which is clearly enough to get plenty of Prime subscribers interested. My advice is to keep your expectations in check if you decide to add this crime thriller to your watchlist this week.

Set in Scotland, a killer is on the loose, and the authorities are struggling to identify this sadistic serial murderer and put an end to their spree. Detective Dan Lawson (Jackson) from the Chicago homicide force is called in to assist. Working alongside Detective Walker Bravo (Vincent Cassel), Lawson discovers a pattern that mimics another serial killer that he investigated five years earlier. Could these new killings be linked, or the work of a copycat?

“The Gates” marks the final movie appearance of James Van Der Beek. The “Dawson’s Creek” star passed away in February, and this chilling thriller was released posthumously. While the movie received largely middling reviews, Van Der Beek’s performance was widely praised, and “The Gates,” like my previous two picks in this roundup, has cemented itself in the Prime Video top 10.

“The Gate” sees a trio of college friends (Mason Gooding, Algee Smith and Keith Powers) on a road trip when they make what could be a fatal mistake by taking a shortcut through a remote gated community. Here they witness a murder and become trapped within the community's walls, hunted by the residents, who are led by a warped man of faith, Jacob (Van Der Beek). These friends must survive as they desperately seek an escape.

This week's slate of top new movies across the biggest streaming services has been confirmed, and after taking last week off, the most popular players, Netflix and Prime Video, return with fresh flicks for subscribers.

The headliner this week looks to be Netflix's new original thriller, "The Whisper Man," which combines a strong cast with a gripping plot. Other notable new movies include a sun-soaked romantic drama on Prime Video and a historical epic on Hulu, which made (unwanted) history of its own after the $150 million movie became a record-setting box office flop.

To save you from scrolling through endless streaming service libraries, I've rounded up the most noteworthy new arrivals across platforms. And if you fancy some binge-watching, here are the top new TV shows this week.

‘Her Private Hell’ (PVOD)

“Her Private Hell” is the first feature from “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn in a decade. Its critical reception was pretty much exactly what you’d expect from a new Winding Refn movie. In short, some critics thought it was a bold surreal trip, and others labeled it a tacky, pretentious disaster. A decade may have passed, but clearly some things never change!

Starring Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton, it centers on a troubled young woman (Thatcher) searching for her absentee father in a neon-drenched futuristic metropolis. Her search leads her to an American G.I. (Melton), who is on his own quest to rescue his daughter from hell. Expect stunning visuals and bizarre narrative quirks. This one won't convert those not already attuned to NWR’s frequency, but dedicated fans will love it.

‘Motor City’ (PVOD)

It’s a strong week for experimental movies, because “Motor City” may be an action-thriller, but it attempts to do something a little different in the genre. The hook here is that director Potsy Ponciroli's new picture has very minimal dialogue. Instead, the pulpy action and rock-heavy soundtrack does the talking. The movie stars “Reacher” lead Alan Ritchson, alongside Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber, Lionel Boyce and Shailene Woodley.

Set in 1970s Detroit, Vietnam War veteran John Miller (Ritchson) is on the warpath after a local gangster, Reynolds (Foster), frames him for a crime he didn’t commit and steals his girlfriend, Sophia (Woodley). Sentenced to 25 years in prison, Miller breaks out of incarceration and, with nothing left to lose, embarks on an epic odyssey for revenge.

‘The Last Sunrise’ (Prime Video)

Summer is drawing to a close, but there’s still time for one last sun-soaked escape in Prime Video’s new romantic drama “The Last Sunrise.” Adapted from Anna Todd’s novel of the same name (which only hit bookshelves last spring), it stars Maia Reficco and Fernando Lindez as two extremely attractive people who fall in love in an equally beautiful location.

Ry (Maia Reficco) is an American student dealing with a chronic illness. Heading to Mallorca for the summer with her overprotective mother (Eva Longoria), she finds an unexpected romance with a local, Julián (Fernando Lindez). The pair promise to live in the moment, but as Ry’s condition worsens and family secrets surface, this passionate summer of love could come to an early end. It all sounds like predictable fodder for the genre.

‘Desert Warrior’ (Hulu)

“Desert Warrior” is one for the morbidly curious. This $150 million historical epic starring Anthony Mackie was made in hopes of revitalizing the Saudi Arabian film industry. After a tough production and a post-production period that reportedly saw director Rupert Wyatt temporarily step back before returning, it was released on the big screen in April and grossed less than $1 million, making it one of the biggest box office bombs in history.

Curious to know if it deserved to bomb? Then its arrival on Hulu is your chance. Set in 7th-century Arabia, a princess (Aiysha Hart) defies the wishes of the ruthless Emperor Kisra (Ben Kingsley) and, with the help of a legendary bandit, Hanzala (Mackie), unites the region's warring tribes to take a stand against the ruler, culminating in the Battle of Ze Qar.

‘The Whisper Man’ (Netflix)

Netflix is capping off its summer original slate with one of my most anticipated streaming movies of the year, “The Whisper Man.” Based on Alex North’s novel, it’s a crime thriller with a strong cast. It features Adam Scott, Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Keaton, and while the jury is still out on its quality, the premise sounds very promising.

Tom Kennedy (Scott) is a widowed crime author whose real life starts to mirror one of the stories from his books when his 8-year-old son is abducted. Desperate for help, he turns to his estranged father, a retired police detective (De Niro). The already bleak situation gets even darker when a connection to a decades-old convicted serial killer, dubbed The Whisper Man, is unearthed.

‘Masters of the Universe’ (2026)

I’ve always felt that knowing what makes a franchise special can make you appreciate an adaptation more. “Masters of the Universe” has decades of history, from the action figures launched in 1982 to its animated series and Dolph Lundgren’s 1987 live-action film. Now, Amazon and Mattel Films have brought the franchise back with this 2026 reboot. As someone completely unfamiliar with this world, I initially questioned whether it was necessary, but there’s still plenty to enjoy here.

When Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) was ten, he was sent from Eternia to Earth and separated from the magical Sword of Power. Fifteen years later, he finally finds the sword, which transports him back to his home planet. There, Adam discovers that Eternia has been taken over by the ruthless Skeletor (Jared Leto), who has captured his parents and seized control of the kingdom. Reunited with his childhood friend Teela (Camila Mendes) and warrior Duncan (Idris Elba), Adam joins the fight to reclaim his home.

‘The Amateur’ (2025)

“The Amateur” is an action-espionage thriller adapted from Robert Littell’s 1981 novel of the same name. Sadly, it’s one of those films that didn’t get the attention it deserved upon release and has since been somewhat forgotten (thankfully, it gets the time to shine on Prime Video). It shares DNA with several classic and modern thrillers, including the “Bourne” films, so if you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll likely enjoy “The Amateur.” It’s tense, atmospheric and driven by a gripping quest for revenge.

Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is a brilliant but introverted CIA decoder whose wife is killed during a terrorist attack in London. When his superiors refuse to pursue those responsible, Charlie decides to take matters into his own hands. He blackmails the agency into giving him field training, despite having no experience as an operative. Armed with his exceptional analytical skills, Charlie sets out across Europe to track down the people involved in his wife’s death. As he pursues them, he must evade CIA agents who have been ordered to stop him.

‘Project Hail Mary’ (2026)

My favorite movie of 2026 so far has to be “Project Hail Mary,” the sci-fi adventure masterpiece adapted by Drew Goddard from Andy Weir’s smash-hit 2021 novel. Lensed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser, the production built a full-scale, functional spacecraft interior set, relying heavily on practical set design alongside high-end visual effects. It’s a stunning film, elevated by an incredible performance from Ryan Gosling and a story that’s both heartwarming and deeply emotional. I couldn’t be more impressed.

Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up aboard a spaceship millions of miles from Earth with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. As his memories slowly return, he discovers that he’s been sent on a last-chance mission to investigate a mysterious substance that is causing the Sun to lose its energy. With Earth facing a catastrophic future, Grace must use his scientific knowledge to figure out what is happening and find a way to stop it. But when he discovers he isn’t the only intelligent life facing the crisis, his mission takes an unexpected turn.

Here's a love story you haven't seen before: A man falls for a woman he can only watch through the camera of an armed robot spider, from a control room half a world away. That is the haunting, unconventional setup of "Eye on Juliet," a quiet 2017 drama almost nobody caught, and right now you can stream it for free.

Written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Kim Nguyen — whose earlier feature "War Witch" earned an Oscar nomination — the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it took home the Fedora Award for Best Film. Joe Cole, best known for his gritty, tough-guy turns in "Peaky Blinders" and "Gangs of London," plays completely against type here as a lonely, soft-spoken drone operator.

Opposite him, Lina El Arabi brings immense heart to the young woman on the other side of the lens. Rather than relying on quippy, familiar romance tropes, this genuinely tender film delivers a heartbreaking story about two people trying to connect across an impossible distance. And it's streaming free on Prime Video — no subscription needed!

What is 'Eye on Juliet' about?

Gordon (Joe Cole) works an interesting yet seemingly dead-end job in Detroit. From a dim control room, he pilots "hexapods," six-legged robotic drones with cameras and guns, that patrol an oil pipeline in an unnamed stretch of North African desert thousands of miles away. He's just been dumped, so he spends his shifts staring at surveillance feeds of sand while feeling just as empty inside.

Then a young woman wanders into frame. Ayusha (Lina El Arabi) happens to look a lot like his ex, and Gordon starts watching her instead of the pipeline. He soon works out that she's being forced into a marriage with a much older man when she's secretly in love with someone her own age named Karim.

What starts as idle, faintly creepy surveillance becomes something else once Gordon starts using the drone to communicate with her directly. The robot essentially turns into his eyes, his voice, and eventually his hands.

From opposite sides of the planet, through a machine built to threaten people rather than help them, the two form a fragile connection. And once Gordon decides Ayusha shouldn't have to marry a stranger, the real question becomes how much a man watching through a robot's eyes can actually change a life he'll never physically touch.

Why I recommend streaming 'Eye on Juliet'

We've never had more ways to reach each other, but plenty of us have never felt further apart for it. "Eye on Juliet" takes that ache and builds an entire romance around it, telling its love story through screens and a surveillance drone.

The robot has a camera, so Gordon and Ayusha are filmed in real shot/reverse-shot, cutting between a control room in America and a desert in Morocco as if they're standing across from each other, when they're thousands of miles apart. The hexapods themselves are strangely menacing, and Timber Timbre's score gives the whole thing a low, dreamy hum that makes the entire story feel a bit odd with some sinister undertones.

Joe Cole underplays Gordon beautifully, all slumped shoulders and swallowed feeling. Lina El Arabi does the harder job of making Ayusha feel like a real person instead of a prize to be won. The film doesn't entirely dodge that trap, and there's a rescue-fantasy streak not everyone will love. Still, it sticks the landing and manages to pull out a heartwarming conclusion that will linger with you long after the credits roll.

There are romantic comedies that we watch over and over and over again: "Bridget Jones' Diary," "When Harry Met Sally," "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and the like. But that doesn't mean we don't leave room for those hidden gems, those lovely little titles that, though maybe not as well-known as some of their rom-com peers, sneak up on you, make you laugh and capture your heart.

Prime Video, one of the best streaming services on the market, is positively full of those initially overlooked but worth-a-watch rom-coms, whether you're in the mood for a very early holiday rom-com starring Zooey Deutch and a lost Tiffany's ring; a Telugu comedy-romance packed with family drama and rural adventure; or a workplace romance led by "Riverdale" alum Camila Mendes as an intern in way over her head.

Here are three under-the-radar romantic comedies that you should add to your next Prime Video watch list.

‘Something from Tiffany’s’

Who says you can’t enjoy a holiday rom-com in the summer? Add a sweet Christmas chill to the summer swelter with this 2022 romantic comedy starring genre favorite Zooey Deutch (“Set It Up,” “Voicemails for Isabelle”) as Rachel Meyer, a woman who, after her boyfriend (Ray Nicholson) is injured and concussed in a car accident outside of a Tiffany’s jewelry store, mistakenly believes that the engagement ring discovered among his possessions is meant for her.

What Rachel doesn’t know is that that sparkler actually belongs to Ethan (Kendrick Sampson), the EMT who treated Gary at the scene of the accident. Naturally, that diamond-studded mix-up leads to plenty of rom-com shenanigans, as Rachel and Ethan unexpectedly find a real connection in the midst of that romantic misfortune. Critics praised the Daryl Wein-directed flick as “a little box of derivative fun that bolsters a low-carat hand of comedy and good chemistry."

'Upgraded'

A modern-day retelling of the classic Cinderella fairytale, this 2024 rom-com centers on Ana Santos (Camila Mendes), a lowly but ambitious intern dreaming of a career in the New York art world, all while toiling under the demanding presence of her boss Claire (Marisa Tomei) and getting sabotaged by her cruel coworkers Suzette and Renee (Rachel Matthews and Fola Evans-Akingbola).

So Ana is pretty happy to hear she's been unexpectedly upgraded to first class on a work trip to London, even more so when that good luck results in her meeting the dashing and wealthy William (Archie Renaux), who mistakenly takes Ana for a high-powered art director. Ana tries to keep the fake-identity ruse going as the two embark on a whirlwind romance, but as she's pulled into glamorous events and high-society pressures, it gets harder and harder to maintain the white lie.

‘Oh..! Sukumari’

Having just premiered on Prime Video on August 7, "Oh..! Sukumari" is the latest addition to the streamer's growing rom-com library, and that very newness — coupled with the fact that it's a foreign film— means you probably haven't heard of it just yet.

The Indian Telugu-language flick stars Thiruveer as Yadagiri, an aspiring politician who falls for the lovely Dhaamini (Aishwarya Rajesh)—however, their new marriage gets an unexpected jolt (literally) when the groom discovers upon their wedding night that his bride has a bizarre condition where she generates a powerful electric shock whenever she is touched.

Given that the family inheritance is predicated upon the couple not only bearing children but specifically a baby boy, the newlyweds have to hilariously navigate a marriage where physical contact is, uh, tricky.
