Prime Video is dropping 52 new movies in August, which means scrolling through a mountain of titles just to figure out what’s actually worth watching. There’s no need to waste half your evening deciding, though, as I’ve sifted through the entire lineup so you can skip straight to the movies that deserve to be on your watchlist.

Looking over everything dropping on the service this August, much of it is easily skippable, which is why I’ve gathered the five best movies to watch right now. That includes one of Christopher Nolan’s best-ever movies, a classic crime thriller with a shocking twist, and an action epic set in a future revolving around apes.

‘Challengers’ (2024)

2026 is the year of Zendaya, with the actress starring in four major releases (I don’t blame her for wanting to take a little break after this). Looking back, “Challengers” now feels like the moment she truly cemented herself as one of Hollywood’s most compelling leading stars. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, best known for “Call Me by Your Name,” this romantic sports drama is less about the central love triangle driving the story and more about the manipulation simmering beneath the surface.

Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) is a former tennis prodigy whose playing career ends after a devastating injury. She reinvents herself as a coach and helps transform her husband, Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), into one of the sport’s biggest champions. When Art begins struggling with his form, Tashi enters him into a lower-level Challenger tournament to rebuild his confidence. There, Art unexpectedly faces Patrick Zweig (Josh O'Connor), his former best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend.

‘Interstellar’ (2014)

If you’ve watched Christopher Nolan’s new film “The Odyssey” in theaters, there’s no better time to stream one of his very best movies on Prime Video: “Interstellar.” It might be a little controversial to rank it among his top three films, considering it remains surprisingly divisive, but I find this sci-fi epic incredibly compelling, elevated even further by its breathtaking soundtrack. “Interstellar” deserves more love because, while it has its flaws, it’s wholly absorbing from start to finish.

Former NASA pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) has traded spaceflight for farming as Earth faces devastating crop failures and worsening dust storms that threaten humanity’s survival. After uncovering a secret NASA facility, he joins a mission through a mysterious wormhole near Saturn alongside a team of astronauts searching for a new habitable planet. As time passes differently across the galaxy, Cooper races against the clock to complete the mission while those he left behind continue fighting for humanity’s future on Earth.

‘The Usual Suspects’ (1995)

Anyone in the mood for a classic crime thriller will want to stream “The Usual Suspects.” It’s easy to see why this film remains a defining thriller of the 1990s. Driven by an incredible ensemble cast and a legendary plot twist, it delivers non-stop tension and masterpiece-level storytelling. Without spoiling the specifics, the final five minutes of the film feature one of the most famous shock endings in film history, fundamentally changing how you view every scene that came before it.

After surviving a deadly explosion aboard a ship in San Pedro Harbor, small-time con artist Roger “Verbal” Kint (Kevin Spacey) is brought in for questioning by U.S. Customs agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri). As Verbal recounts the events leading up to the massacre, he explains how he and four other career criminals first crossed paths during a police lineup before joining forces on a series of increasingly dangerous jobs. Their activities eventually place them in the orbit of the mysterious and feared crime lord Keyser Söze.

‘Licorice Pizza’ (2021)

I’ll always take the chance to recommend a great indie film, especially since these kinds of releases often get overlooked. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, “Licorice Pizza” is a warm, sun-drenched, episodic coming-of-age comedy-drama set in 1970s California. Neither lead actor Alana Haim nor Cooper Hoffman had previously appeared in a feature film, with Haim being best known as a member of the Grammy-nominated indie rock band HAIM.

Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) is a 15-year-old actor and aspiring entrepreneur who meets Alana Kane (Alana Haim), a 25-year-old photographer’s assistant, in California’s San Fernando Valley in 1973. After an unlikely connection forms between them, the pair go on a series of adventures involving acting, business ventures, and Hollywood encounters. From starting a waterbed company to navigating various challenges around Los Angeles, Gary and Alana’s lives become increasingly intertwined.

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ (2024)

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” serves as the fourth installment in the rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise. It kicks off a brand-new chapter for the series, bridging the gap between Caesar’s era and the world seen in the original 1968 classic. The franchise continues to set a high bar visually, with Wētā FX once again delivering incredible motion-capture work. The CGI is stunning, bringing overgrown city ruins and incredibly realistic primate expressions to life with impressive detail.

This film is set generations after Caesar’s reign, when apes have formed new societies and humans have been pushed to the margins. The story follows Noa (Owen Teague), a young chimpanzee whose peaceful clan is destroyed by a ruthless ape leader searching for human technology. Forced into a dangerous journey, Noa encounters a human named Mae (Freya Allan) and discovers hidden truths about the past. Soon, Noa fights to rescue his clan and determine what the future will look like.

We've officially come to the end of July but luckily, in streaming as in life, the finish of one month brings the start of another and with it a fresh crop of new films and TV series for us to binge on our couches. (Because, really, what more do we need?)

One of the top streaming services around, Prime Video regularly updates its already extensive streaming library every month and August 2026 will be no exception, with buzzy shows and movies joining the platform in the weeks ahead. But before we say hello to all of those additions, let's use this weekend to catch up on some of the great titles that premiered in July.

Given the breadth of the Prime Video platform, we here at Tom's Guide have decided to make things easy and narrowed the list down to a trio of shows that we think you should check out next. They include action-adventure comedy "Ride or Die," animated superhero noir "Batman: Caped Crusader" and a beloved mother-daughter series that moved to Prime Video earlier in the month. (Hint: Friday night dinner!) Here are the 3 best new to Prime Video shows to binge this weekend.

'Ride or Die'

Genre: Buddy comedy/action-adventure

What it's about: Besties Debbie (Octavia Spencer) and Judith (Hannah Waddingham) have the type of friendship that can withstand anything—but that trust gets majorly tested when it's revealed that the latter isn't actually a forensic accountant as Debbie always thought, but a highly trained, guns-blazing assassin. When Debbie and her MP husband David (Jamie Parker) get unwittingly roped into a scheme involving mob money and corrupt politics, the gal pals are forced on the run.

Why you should watch it: Who doesn't want to hang out with Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer — two of Hollywood's most talented and likeable stars — for eight hourlong episodes? Beyond the actresses' excellent onscreen chemistry, "Ride or Die" is a winning watch because it "maximizes its entertainment, humor, and fun through genuine performances and breezy writing," per the critics' consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, where the spy caper has a solid 96% approval rating.

'Batman: Caped Crusader'

Genre: Superhero noir/animated series

What it's about: Season 2 of this moody, film noir-inspired reimagining of the Batman mythos sees plenty more danger and drama ahead for our Bruce Wayne (voiced by Hamish Linklater as an adult and Santino Barnard as young Bruce). As Batman and his allies rally together to dismantle the criminal enterprise of reigning mob boss Rupert Thorne (Cedric Yarbrough), the masked vigilante will also have to contend with a whole host of iconic villains, including the Riddler, the Scarecrow and the Joker.

Why you should watch it: If you like a broodingly stylized take on the superhero genre—think "Spider-Noir," another Prime Video project—then you'll no doubt enjoy this Bruce Timm-developed drama, which earned a Critics' Choice nomination last year for Best Animated Series.

'Gilmore Girls'

Genre: Family dramedy

What it's about: At this point, we probably don't need to tell you what "Gilmore Girls" is about, but in case you haven't yet tuned into the classic mother-daughter dramedy, the WB throwback stars Lauren Graham as thirtysomething single mom Lorelai Gilmore and Alexis Bledel as her precociously smart teenage daughter Rory. Over seven seasons, the series chronicles their preternaturally close bond as they both grow and change in the charming New England town of Stars Hollow.

Why you should watch it: If you've been missing the Gilmores' quick-witted repartee and Stars Hollow's small-town quirkiness ever since the series shockingly departed Netflix, don't fret: Prime Video picked up all seven seasons beginning on July 1. Because where the Gilmores lead, we will follow.

'Women Talking' (2023)

Based on Miriam Toews' acclaimed novel, Sarah Polley's "Women Talking" centers on the tragic story of a group of Mennonite women who are being abused by the men in their community. But the movie is less interested in the horrors these men have committed and more concerned about what the women will do in response.

Told with remarkable restraint, the film refuses to sensationalize their trauma, instead keeping the women's experiences and resilience at the forefront. Claire Foy and Rooney Mara deliver powerful, widely praised performances that anchor this ensemble drama that's definitely worth watching on Prime Video this month.

'Fargo' (1996)

"Fargo" shows how anyone can become a criminal, all they need is a few bad decisions and two braincells to rub together. This Coen brothers' black comedy follows Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand), a Midwest nice police chief caught up in one of the strangest cases her small North Dakota town ever saw.

This being a Coen brothers film, it’s filled with quirky characters — not to mention the delightful midwestern accents of McDormand and William H. Macy’s Jerry Lundegaard, a schmuck whose scheme to kidnap his wife and extort his father-in-law for money kicks off the whole string of unfortunate events. Steve Buscemi is also suitably slimey as one of the two-bit criminals Jerry hires, though he meets a pretty grisly end (if ykyk). McDormand won an Academy Award for Best Actress, and the Coen brothers picked up an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

'Barbershop' (2002)

I've got a soft spot for a lot of Ice Cube's movies — you'll still catch me watching "Friday" on a Friday where I ain't got nothing to do. All three "Barbershop" movies landed on Prime Video in August, but as with the "Scary Movie" series before it, the original is really the only one worth watching.

Set entirely over the course of one long, cold day at a neighborhood barbershop on Chicago’s South Side, "Barbershop" stars Cube as Calvin, an overworked barber fed up with keeping his father's shop alive. He decides to wash his hands of the money pit and sells it to a loan shark (Keith David). But once Calvin realizes he plans to turn it into a strip mall, he has a change of heart — just as another barber (Michael Ealy) faces jail time. Cue misadventures with plenty of slapstick as the two set out to prove his innocence and save the shop in the process.

I wouldn’t disagree with anyone who argues that we don’t need more versions of Batman in pop culture. Yet that theoretical person would be missing out on one of the best takes on the legendary DC Comics superhero by skipping the Prime Video animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader.”

Even for fans who are suffering from Batman fatigue, “Caped Crusader” offers a clever, stylish and artistically ambitious take on the oft-adapted character, making smart changes to established Batman canon while sticking to the core of what makes the Dark Knight such an enduring figure in modern mythology.

The new second season continues that approach, with a balance of standalone stories and overarching plotlines in its 10 episodes. It’s been two years since the previous season premiered, but the new season quickly wraps up the hanging threads from the reign of crime boss Rupert Thorne (Cedric Yarbrough), allowing Batman (Hamish Linklater) and the Gotham City police force to move on to other threats. The supporting characters are a mix of familiar faces and new additions, all handled with the same combination of vintage and progressive sensibilities that worked so well in the first season.

‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ balances classic and modern superhero storytelling

The main precursor to “Caped Crusader” is the beloved 1990s show “Batman: The Animated Series,” whose co-creator Bruce Timm also created “Caped Crusader.” This is a more adult take on Timm’s moody, art deco-style Batman series, but it operates in the same nebulous time period somewhere between the 1930s and the 1950s, with retro fashions, technology and dialogue. The visuals also recall Tim Burton’s two live-action Batman movies, and the tone is serious without feeling overly somber. There’s deadly violence and occasional swearing, but “Caped Crusader” isn’t just edgy for its own sake.

This version of Batman is more aloof than brooding, and Linklater plays him with a gruff demeanor that splits the difference between Christian Bale in the Christopher Nolan movies and Kevin Conroy in various animated incarnations. He has no sidekicks and essentially no allies, even though he reluctantly collaborates with Commissioner James Gordon (Eric Morgan Stuart) and Detective Renee Montoya (Michelle C. Bonilla) of the GCPD, and Gordon’s public defender daughter Barbara (Krystal Joy Brown). His relationship with his butler Alfred Pennyworth (Jason Watkins) is similarly distant, although Alfred occasionally reaches beyond Batman’s rough exterior to the human side of his alter ego Bruce Wayne.

Those cracks are still fairly infrequent in the second season, even as Batman allows himself to accept more help from fellow crime-fighters. Both Montoya and Barbara frequently take the spotlight as fellow protagonists, engaged in their own investigations into nefarious activities.

Although it’s set in what looks like the past, “Caped Crusader” takes place in a more accepting world, where the openly gay Montoya can flirt with Barbara and also maintain a tragic romance with psychiatrist-turned-antihero Harley Quinn (Jamie Chung). Gotham City may still be plagued by constant crime, but it’s also a place of welcome diversity.

‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ offers exciting, intelligent adventures

With Rupert Thorne out of the way, the second season takes its time building up a new major antagonist, bringing in Batman’s most famous foe, the Joker (Matthew Needham), who makes brief, shadowy appearances before taking center stage in the two-part finale. Like all of the villains introduced on the show, the Joker has been slightly tweaked, and Needham’s take on the character speaks in a vaguely Germanic accent, making grand, gloomy pronouncements that sound a bit like Werner Herzog.

This season also features its take on the Riddler (Dave Franco) as more of a basic psychopath, who gets his name not from posing brain-teasers, but from the way he riddles crime scenes with bullets. He’s somewhat underwhelming, and the show often succeeds more with lesser-known characters.

One of the best episodes of the season features obscure antagonist Roxy Rocket (Wunmi Mosaku), whose jet pack-powered attacks play up the connections to classic adventure serials. Both Harley and potential kid sidekick Carrie Kelly (Juliet Donenfeld) make satisfying returns, slowly building up a set of recurring characters.

Lots of characters don’t recur, though, because “Caped Crusader” carries a real sense of danger, never hesitating to kill off either villains or their targets, which heightens the stakes. Like fellow Prime Video superhero series “Spider-Noir,” “Caped Crusader” embraces the seediness and moral ambiguity of film noir, playing up the connections to classic Hollywood via vintage-style title cards. It’s a perfect fit for Batman, who is at his core a detective, and it makes Gotham City a place that’s as alluring as it is scary.

Verdict: ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ remains a top-notch take on the Dark Knight

Batman has a long history of comic-book stories that place him in slightly altered settings and time periods, and “Caped Crusader” builds on that tradition, with comic book veterans J.M. DeMatteis, Greg Rucka, and sisters Julie and Shawna Benson among this season’s writers. The show creates a fully realized world that is both timeless and fresh, while keeping its narrative gritty and grounded.

As Matt Reeves’ live-action film “The Batman: Part II” keeps getting delayed, and James Gunn puts off casting his own Batman for the DC Universe movies, “Caped Crusader” has quietly emerged as the greatest current onscreen version of the character. The confident and inventive storytelling continues in this season, proving that it’s always possible to make this iconic character feel exciting and vital again.

I do love a good shark movie. Most of the time, it comes down to the survival story: watching a single person or a group of characters try to escape a dire situation involving one of Earth’s most terrifying predators. But beyond the danger, these movies also make for a thrilling evening watch. So when Prime Video announced “The Devil’s Mouth,” its latest original movie, I was intrigued to see how this new shark thriller would stack up against the rest of the genre. Having now watched all 104 minutes of the survival flick, I’m left feeling more frustrated than entertained.

“The Devil’s Mouth” essentially feels like a claustrophobic version of “Jaws,” with a premise that’s almost an exact copy of “47 Meters Down: Uncaged.” It follows five college friends who embark on a guided swim through a remote cave system along Thailand’s coast. However, their exploration quickly turns into a nightmare when they realize there’s a deadly bull shark lurking in the darkness. Now they must work together to survive a predator that can strike at any moment.

Prime Video likely has a new No. 1 movie on its hands, but “The Devil’s Mouth” suffers from one major problem that almost had me switching it off: its incredibly annoying characters. Not only did I want to scream at my TV, but I had absolutely no intention of rooting for these people, meaning there was no emotional investment whatsoever. So, before you dive into Prime Video’s new shark movie, here’s what I think.

The scares are there, but patience is required

“The Devil’s Mouth” starts off like many shark survival films, introducing the group of characters who will eventually come face to face with the ocean’s deadliest predator. This friendship group includes the controlling leader Max (Lana Condor), soft-spoken Sara (Kathryn Newton), Max’s overly passive boyfriend James (Nico Hiraga), the whiny Greg (Gavin Casalegno), and his spontaneous girlfriend Adrienne (Tommi Rose). It’s a pretty standard setup for a survival movie, especially when these characters fall into almost every familiar trope. From the opening minutes, you can already predict who’s going to make it out alive.

This movie doesn’t make much of an effort to make you care about its characters. There’s some exposition-heavy dialogue about their plans after college, along with early hints of tension between best friends Max and Sara, but for the most part, I struggled to become invested in their journey. “The Devil’s Mouth” almost forces you to dislike everyone except Sara, meaning there’s very little emotional payoff once the shark finally enters the picture. Every character makes frustratingly poor decisions, with the group constantly screaming at one another, to the point where I found myself checking how much time was left.

It’s frustrating because “The Devil’s Mouth” does manage to build enough tension to keep me hooked, and the third act is a little more compelling, but without any emotional investment, the outcome ultimately feels wasted. This movie would have benefited from focusing more on the toxic friendship between Sara and Max, keeping them as the central characters navigating an awful situation while being forced to confront their issues. Max has an unhealthy obsession with being in control, while Sara lacks the backbone to stand on her own and stop simply following along.

“The Devil’s Mouth” will probably please those looking for a simple shark movie or a new guilty pleasure watch. Kathryn Newton does what she can with the material, and she’s already one of my favorite actresses right now, so her performance alone was compelling enough to keep me watching. However, I wish this had been a more intimate movie focused on a couple of complex characters rather than a larger group that’s difficult to connect with. Thankfully, the bull shark hunting them doesn’t suffer from any poor visual effects, and I’m sure many viewers will find the thrills enough to overlook the annoying characters.

Verdict: ‘The Devil’s Mouth’ proves the shark isn’t always the biggest problem

All I want is a shark movie that genuinely gets under my skin and hits me on a visceral level. I don’t even mind flawed or annoying characters because conflict is standard fare. But they need to act like actual human beings with understandable reasons for making bad choices, not just walking tropes lined up as fresh bait. Honestly, maybe this is a sign the subgenre is running out of steam.

If filmmakers aren’t going to give us something genuinely different like the way “Dangerous Animals” tried to shake things up by throwing a serial killer into the mix, maybe it's time to give the creature-feature side of the genre a break. “The Devil’s Mouth” certainly packs enough quick thrills to boost it to the No. 1 spot on Prime Video this week, and it works fine if you’re looking for a mindless guilty pleasure. But as someone who genuinely loves a tight, gripping survival thriller, I just left the water feeling unsatisfied.

This week’s selection of top new movies across the best streaming services is another busy one with plenty of options on popular platforms including Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock and more.

Thriller fans are spoilt for choice with several worthwhile picks, including “A Private Life,” which sees Jodie Foster deliver a powerhouse performance entirely in French, and a new shark survival movie on Prime Video (we’re fully in shark movie season right now). But those looking for lighter watches should consider “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” on Peacock.

There’s plenty of new movies to talk about this week, so I’ve rounded up the most noteworthy arrivals across platforms down below. Plus, here’s a guide to the top new TV shows this week, if you want to binge-watch.

‘Supergirl’ (PVOD)

The second feature film in James Gunn’s DC Extended Universe didn’t manage to capture the attention of comic book fans like “Superman." In fact, “Supergirl” proved to be anything but super at the box office, grossing an underwhelming $124 million against a production budget reportedly north of $170 million. Ouch! Just a month after release, it’s swapping the big screen for streaming, where it’ll hope to find a larger audience.

Based on the fan-favorite “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic book, Milly Alcock plays the eponymous heroine, also known as Kara Zor-El. Unlike her cousin, Clark Kent, she hasn’t taken to being a world-saving hero. Supergirl spends her days wandering between planets and visiting dive bars. But she’s forced to adopt the hero lifestyle when a ruthless villain emerges. She teams up with a young survivor (Eve Ridley) to dish out some justice.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ (Hulu)

20 years after the original strutted the catwalk, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” brings viewers back to the world of Runway magazine, luxurious designer fashion and the iconic, almost impossible-to-please editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). This long-requested follow-up is your classic legacy sequel, reuniting the original cast (including Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci), and making more than a few nods to how much time has passed since the first “Devil Wears Prada."

With the magazine business no longer in its heyday, the frosty editor-in-chief of fashion mag Runway, Miranda Priestly (Streep), is reluctantly forced to turn to her former assistant, Andy Sachs (Hathaway) for help. As the pair navigate the evolving world of print publishing, they face competition from an old colleague, Emily Charlton (Blunt). Meanwhile, Miranda’s right-hand man, Nigel (Stanley Tucci), offers his wisdom.

‘The Devil’s Mouth’ (Prime Video)

Another week, another shark movie hits streaming. The toothy thrillers served up so far this summer haven’t been of the highest quality, so here’s hoping that “The Devil’s Mouth” can buck the trend and deliver some genuine scares. While the casting of Kathryn Newton and Lana Condor offers hope it could be a cut above the low-quality shark movies already released this summer, it also comes from Jeff Wadlow, the director behind “Fantasy Island,” Kick-Ass 2,” and “Imaginary,” and those movies stink!

In “The Devil’s Mouth,” a group of five college friends signs up for a guided tour through an underwater cave system from which the movie takes its title. They plan to have one last big adventure before entering the “real world.” But what was supposed to be an unforgettable trip becomes memorable for a sinister reason when they're trapped in the submerged caves and discover there’s a bull shark swimming in the dark waters.

‘A Private Life’ (Netflix)

My colleague, Malcolm McMillan, claims this mystery thriller is “worth watching for Jodie Foster’s performance alone,” and was impressed that she portrays an American in Paris while speaking entirely in French.

I knew Foster was talented, but giving an awards-nominated performance in a second language is truly commendable. Her acclaimed work in “A Private Life” saw Foster become the first American to be nominated for a Lumière Award for Best Actress. So long as you can handle subtitles, then this thriller should be on your Netflix watchlist this week.

Dr. Lilian Steiner (Foster) is an American psychiatrist working and living in the French capital. She’s devastated to learn that a client has taken her own life. But after a visit from the client's widow, Simon (Mathieu Amalric), and daughter, Valérie (Luàna Bajrami), alongside the discovery that some of her files have been stolen, Lilian suspects foul play. Launching an investigation of her own, she becomes convinced this is a murder case.

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ (Peacock)

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is a pure sugar-rush explosion of iconic characters, colorful animation and big action-packed moments. In all the chaos, it neglects to spin much of a story (perhaps that's appropriate for a Mario movie). However, younger viewers will delight in the playful nature of Mario and pals’ latest adventure. Though I expect the majority of older watchers will find it very much a one-and-done watching experience.

Inspired by the popular “Super Mario Galaxy” video game on the Nintendo Wii, this sequel to the 2023 movie sees Mario (voiced again by Chris Pratt) take to the cosmos to assist Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson), who has been taken prisoner by Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie). Along for the ride are Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key). However, it's Jack Black’s Bowser who again steals the show.

‘The Drama’ (HBO Max)

“The Odyssey” hype is flowing with no signs of slowing down, which makes now a great time to watch “The Drama.” This darkly funny romantic comedy stars two of “The Odyssey’s” cast members, Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, and ranks as one of my favorite films of the year to date. It’s not your typical feel-good rom-com, instead trading in awkward humor, but it’s sharply written, and Pattinson and Zendaya both bring their A-game.

Charlie (Pattinson) and Emma (Zendaya) are a happy couple preparing for their impending wedding. All seems perfect until an “unexpected revelation” days before they’re due to say “I do.” This sends their relationship into a tailspin, as they are forced to confront whether they truly know each other, and if their romance is built to last. I’ll say no more, because watching this spoiler-free enhances the viewing experience.

‘Over Your Dead Body’ (AMC+)

“Over Your Dead Body” is in something of a similar mold to “The Drama”; it’s also a dark comedy about two people in a relationship that is anything but blissful. To add further intrigue, this movie also incorporates action-thriller elements, delivering a strong package of complementary genres. It’s also an American remake of a Norwegian movie called “The Trip,” but unlike some remakes, this one wasn’t branded a lazy, pointless cash-in.

Dan (Jason Segel) and Lisa (Samara Weaving) are a once-happy couple, heading towards an acrimonious split. Traveling to a remote cabin for the weekend, this getaway isn’t going to fix the cracks in their relationship, as they both harbor secret plans to murder the other. These plans are thrown into chaos when their weekend is crashed by strangers, forcing Dan and Lisa to pivot on the fly and maybe even team up to survive the trip.

‘Sterling Point’ (August 5)

“Sterling Point” is a coming-of-age mystery drama series, based on an entirely original story conceived and written for the screen by Megan Park. It has a similar tone to shows like “We Were Liars” and “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” but with a distinctly Canadian setting. Set against the backdrop of a foggy island off the coast of Canada, the series is driven by a central mystery, but viewers tuning in for the romance will be pleased to know there’s also a love triangle at the heart of the story.

Seventeen-year-old Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) has always lived an ordinary life in New York with her twin brother Connor (Keen Ruffalo) and their adoptive father. Everything changes when the siblings unexpectedly inherit a remote island in Canada from the estranged grandfather they were never allowed to meet. Hoping to uncover the truth about their family’s past, Annie travels to the island, where she meets an unexpected sister named Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle) and a group of locals who are deeply connected to the property.

‘Reacher’ season 4 (August 12)

It’s time to celebrate, because “Reacher” is finally back for season 4. This time around, the series adapts Lee Child’s novel Gone Tomorrow, which focuses on a conspiracy involving government cover-ups. From the trailer alone, this season appears to take heavy inspiration from classic neo-noir detective stories, with a much darker and more claustrophobic feel than what we’ve seen before. It’s an exciting time to be a “Reacher” fan, especially with the series already renewed for season 5.

“Reacher” season 4 begins when Reacher (Alan Ritchson) witnesses a woman behaving suspiciously on a late-night New York City subway train. Before he can question her, she dies, and what appears to be a straightforward suicide quickly proves far more complicated. Determined to uncover the truth, Reacher joins forces with the woman’s brother and an NYPD homicide detective, fighting to expose the truth before those responsible can silence him for good.

‘The Last Sunrise’ (August 26)

Lastly, we have a romance flick perfect for summer, and that’s “The Last Sunrise.” The film is based on Anna Todd’s 2025 novel of the same name, with the bestselling author best known for creating the global “After” franchise. It’s also directed by Carlson Young, who previously helmed the films “Upgraded” and “The Map of Tiny Perfect Things,” so I have high hopes. As a romance fan, I’m eagerly awaiting the trailer, but even from the premise alone, I’m already intrigued.

Oriah “Ry” Pera (Maia Reficco) is a college student living with a chronic illness whose overprotective mother takes a new job in Mallorca. Hoping for a fresh start, Ry spends the summer exploring the island and meets Julián (Fernando Lindez), a charming local who introduces her to experiences she has never had before. Soon, Ry begins embracing her independence and imagining a different future. However, worsening health problems threaten to cut her journey short, forcing her to make difficult choices before the summer comes to an end.

All the best streaming services use AI in some form or another to serve up recommendations for what to watch, but Prime Video's looking to go all in. According to a Reuters report this week, Jeff Bezos is personally pushing Amazon’s Prime Video executives toward a major app redesign to turn the streaming platform into a marquee showcase for Amazon's multi-billion-dollar investments in AI technology for its 200+ million active viewers.

Internally codenamed Project Lighthouse, the effort is just one piece of Amazon's companywide AI efforts to compete against the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic. Lighthouse would comb through a subscriber's viewing preferences, using AI for improved film and TV recommendations and to respond to spoken requests, one person with knowledge of the project told Reuters. The final redesign is still in the works, but it could drastically change your home page and how you find what to watch next. We've reached out to Amazon for comment, and will update this story once we hear back.

Following a tense internal presentation last fall, Bezos rejected earlier redesign proposals from Prime Video head Mike Hopkins, expressing frustration that they did not go far enough in leveraging generative AI for improved personalization. The team scrapped those plans and started fresh under Global Head of Design Kam Keshmiri. So far this year, the company's dropped $200 billion in capital expenditures, mostly related to developing AI, Reuters reports.

Potential changes with Prime Video's AI redesign

Again, Prime Video's AI overhaul is far from finalized, but one part of the redesign under consideration would introduce AI-powered content tiles that surface curated viewing suggestions, such as "1980s action movies" or "Christmas rom-coms," three people familiar with the discussions told Reuters. Netflix employs similar categories to help direct viewers find other movies and shows in genres they gravitate toward.

The overhaul could also reshape how movies and TV shows are promoted on Prime Video. Right now, studios pay for premium placement on the service's homepage alongside recommendations generated by Amazon's algorithms, a practice that's standard among streaming platforms.

Amazon has reportedly already begun testing early versions of the redesign with a limited group of users. However, the final product could still change based on tester feedback, budget considerations, or other internal factors. The redesigned interface would still include the standard search bar, along with a dedicated area at the top of the homepage to spotlight new releases and live events, including Amazon's exclusive "Thursday Night Football" broadcasts.

Over on Prime Video, you can catch the darling animated adventure "The Wild Robot" from the same creator of "Lilo & Stitch" and "How to Train Your Dragon" series. Finally, Netflix just got the second part of "Wicked" if you're looking to get our sing-along on this weekend. So without further ado, let's dive into the best new movies to watch this weekend.

'The Dink' (Apple TV)

One of the few original movies debuting on streaming this week is "The Dink," a new Apple TV sports comedy from director Josh Greenbaum ("Strays" and "Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar"). My boy Jake Johnson stars as a washed-up tennis pro named Dusty Boyd who finds a shot at redemption in the unlikeliest of places: on the pickleball court.

Through a bizarre twist of fate, Dusty ends up joining a pickleball quartet made up of older women, where he quickly develops a crush on their charismatic leader (Mary Steenburgen). But his newfound passion for the sport comes with high stakes, as he’s forced to face off against his longtime nemesis with the future of his father's country club hanging in the balance. The film also features Chloe Fineman, Patton Oswalt, Fortune Feimster, Chris Parnell, Ben Stiller, and a scene-stealing Aaron Chen as Dusty’s trusty sidekick.

'Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu' (PVOD)

The lowest-grossing Star Wars movie in history made its way to paid-video-on-demand platforms this week. You're better off waiting for it to arrive on Disney+ in a few months, but if you need your Baby Yoda fix now, have at it. "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" never quite justifies its full-length movie treatment, feeling instead like a mini "Mandalorian" marathon retrofitted to the big screen, which might explain the poor theatrical performance.

The galaxy's dreamiest bounty hunter and his pint-sized companion return for a new adventure. Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu take on a mission for the New Republic to rescue Rotta the Hutt (voiced by "The Bear's" Jeremy Allen White), Jabba's heir, from a rival crime syndicate to get some juicy intel on an Imperial warlord. Their assignment spirals into a galaxy-spanning adventure filled with all the blaster fights and Force magic you'd expect of a Star Wars outing.

'Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender' (Paramount+)

Did we really need more of Team Avatar? Eh. Debatable. Will I be sat down to watch this weekend? Absolutely. If only to see Toph (voiced by Dionee Quan) get the epic fight scenes we all hoped for in "The Legend of Korra." Directed by Lauren Montgomery, the film takes place after the events of the original animated series and follows an older Avatar Aang (voiced by Eric Nam), now grown up and setting out with his friends on a mission to rebuild the long-lost Air Nation.

To do that, he'll need an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction, but if it falls into the wrong hands first, it spells doom for the Air Nation's future. Expanding the world of “Avatar” with a new chapter in Aang’s journey, this has all the makings of an essential watch for longtime fans.

'Wicked: For Good' (Netflix)

John M. Chu’s 2025 movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, "Wicked: For Good," just landed on Netflix — though if you ask me, there are much better musicals on Netflix that are more worth your time. Let's be real, all the best "Wicked" songs are in the first act, so "For Good" was never going to stack up, but it was still a satisfying conclusion for the story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) with plenty of earworms and big-budget set pieces to dazzle you into a stupor.

"For Good" picks up right after "Wicked's" dramatic conclusion, with Elphaba now in her Wicked Witch of the West era on the run from the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). Many of her old pals from Shiz now lead the mob calling for her head, though others lead the search only to find her before they do. Glinda and Elphaba clash over the Wizard's true intentions and what's best for Oz, but when a mysterious storm sends a young girl from Kansas (and her little dog too) crashing into their world, it puts their already strained relationship to the ultimate test.

'The Wild Robot' (Prime Video)

"The Wild Robot" is one of several animated movies I refuse to shut up about, so when I saw it landed on Prime Video this week, I knew I had to give it a shout-out. With Chris Sanders, the same creative tour de force behind "Lilo & Stitch" and "How to Train Your Dragon," at the wheel, you know you're in for a treat. This DreamWorks treasure had me full-on ugly crying in the theater when it came out, thanks in large part to Lupita Nyong’o’s deeply moving performance as Roz, a lost robot turned reluctant parent to an orphaned gosling (Kit Conner).

Also along for the ride is everyone's favorite zaddy, Pedro Pascal, as a fox that could give Nick Wilde a run for money. Oh, and Matt Berry makes a cameo as a beaver — I'm letting y'all know so you don't get jump scared like I was. It's your standard fish out of water tale, beautifully told with gorgeous animation that easily rivals the "Spider-Verse" films in both style and ambition.

‘Masters of the Universe’ (2026)

Deep passion for a franchise often enhances how much you enjoy its films. “Masters of the Universe” (spanning 1982 action figures, animated series, and the Dolph Lundgren movie) boasts a dedicated fanbase now backing the 2026 reboot on Prime Video. Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) is a young man who has spent years on Earth unaware of his true origins. After discovering the Sword of Power, Adam returns to the distant planet of Eternia, where he learns his home has fallen under the control of the ruthless Skeletor. Joined by allies including Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan (Idris Elba), Adam must reclaim his place and transform into He-Man, the legendary warrior destined to protect Eternia. ‘The Wild Robot’ (2024)

DreamWorks’ critically acclaimed animated feature “The Wild Robot” is adapted from Peter Brown’s best-selling 2016 novel of the same name, which earned multiple major award nominations, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score at the Academy Awards. Moving away from photorealistic animation and traditional glossy CGI, the filmmakers developed a custom hand-painted watercolor aesthetic, with director Chris Sanders citing classic Disney hand-drawn animation and the works of Hayao Miyazaki as key visual inspirations.

Roz (Lupita Nyong'o) is a service robot that is shipwrecked on a remote island. After awakening among unfamiliar wildlife, Roz must work through the challenges of her new surroundings while searching for a way back home. Her journey changes when she discovers an orphaned gosling and takes on the responsibility of raising it. With help from a clever fox named Fink (Pedro Pascal) and the island’s other creatures, Roz learns how to care for the young bird, Brightbill (Kit Connor), while preparing him for his future.

‘World War Z’ (2013)

Forget the classic, slow-stumbling zombies from “The Walking Dead” (they’re obviously creepy but pretty easy to outrun). “World War Z” completely flips that script, unleashing terrifying, sprinting hordes that move like swarming insects and literally scale buildings. While it basically tosses out Max Brooks’ famous source novel in favor of its own thing, the movie still delivers a relentless, heart-pounding disaster thrill ride that horror fans will love. Plus, a sequel is reportedly in development, making it the perfect time to stream.

“World War Z” follows Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), a former United Nations investigator, as a sudden, hyper-aggressive zombie pandemic erupts globally. To secure safe shelter for his family aboard a military ship, Gerry agrees to lead a global search for the origin of the outbreak to find a cure. Traveling across South Korea, Israel, and Wales, he dodges massive, fast-moving swarms of the infected. After observing that the infected seem to ignore certain individuals, Gerry tests a dangerous theory at a medical facility to find a way for humanity to survive. Oh, and Paramount has officially confirmed that a 'World War Z' 2 is in the works.

Some thrillers only need a great villain to grab you from the start, and "The Night of the Hunter" features one of the absolute best. While awaiting execution, Ben shares a cell with Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum), a chilling traveling preacher. Once Ben meets his fate, Powell hits the road to target the widow, hunt down the cash, and set off a series of sinister mind games.

If you’re looking for an atmospheric thriller that unsettles you without cheap gore or convoluted twists, this hidden gem is worth digging out of the massive Prime Video library.

What is 'The Night of the Hunter' about?

Ben Harper (Peter Graves) robs a bank in Depression-era West Virginia and kills two men doing it. He returns home with $10,000 and the police minutes behind him, and he hides the money where nobody will think to look. That's when he makes his son John swear to keep the secret from everyone, including his mother.

Ben is sentenced to hang afterward. In prison, he shares a cell with Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum), a self-styled traveling preacher. Powell has already killed several widows and considers it holy work. He listens to Ben talk in his sleep and comes away with a town name, a wife's name, and the certainty that a fortune is waiting for him.

Powell walks out of prison and into that town, where he introduces himself as a man of God who knew the children's father. The neighbors adore him. Willa Harper (Shelley Winters) marries him. The only two people who see through him are the children, and one of them knows exactly where the money is. Will they fold, and will Powell get the fortune?

Why I recommend streaming 'The Night of the Hunter'

It's a classic set-up: an adult who fools the whole town, except for the children. "The Night of the Hunter" is that experience in movie form, and is part of what makes it such a satisfying and occasionally unsettling watch.

Charles Laughton was an actor, not a director, and he made this movie and never got another chance, though really, it makes no sense why. It's a Southern Gothic tale that looks wholly unlike anything else from 1955, in many different ways, from shot to shot. It's almost like a thriller created in modern times with a filter to give it the old-timey aesthetic that makes it so memorable.

"The Night of the Hunter" is scary in a way without relying on cheapness. There's no gore in it and barely any blood. It's just a genuinely frightening movie about children who can't get an adult to believe them, so if you've been there and you know what that's like, I highly recommend jumping on Prime Video and giving it a watch while you still can. It won't be there forever.

Prime Video could be getting an AI overhaul at the behest of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, according to a new report. The redesign would put AI front and center under a new project allegedly dubbed Lighthouse.

Reuters reports that the push from Bezos is meant as a way for Amazon to utilize its massive investments in AI and "elevate the company's stature in artificial intelligence." This comes as other investments, including improving the Alexa voice assistant, have provided mixed results and ongoing losses.

Bezos was "displeased" with a Prime Video presentation last fall where AI was not highlighted. The Lighthouse project was born out of this meeting.

What does Lighthouse add to Prime Video?

Bezos is said to be personally involved in the overhaul, an unusual step considering he relinquished the CEO title in 2021 to focus on the Washington Post and his spaceflight company Blue Origin.

Per Reuters, Lighthouse would add a slew of new features that would use AI to improve film and TV show recommendations. This would be done by having the AI learn customer preferences and respond to spoken requests.

A homepage redesign is part of the project, but it's not finalized, so it's not known how it would look yet.

However, it was suggested that it could include AI-driven titles with viewing suggestions like "Christmas rom-coms" or "action movies from the 1980s." Reportedly, a current version doesn't include text-heavy titles, so that even that appears to still be in the air.

Programs and live events like Thursday Night Football would still be promoted in the upper portion of the platform alongside the traditional search bar.

Amazon is also supposedly attempting to integrate Alexa into Prime Video's search function as part of the redesign. Most recently, Alexa was overhauled into a generative AI version last year and integrated into the Amazon shopping platform earlier this year.

Where Prime Video stands

Amazon last gave Prime Video a massive update in July of 2024 that streamlined content curation and added AI recommendations.

The most recent Nielsen data from 2025 has Prime Video in a distant eighth place in TV viewing share behind YouTube, Netflix and Disney+ at 3.9% of viewers. Reuters reports that it's bumped up to 4.2% this year, though still behind Netflix and Disney.

An AI overhaul could be a way for the company to utilize both its artificial intelligence investments and increase viewership with more personalized recommendations.

Summer has always been the perfect time to binge a romance series, and “The Summer I Turned Pretty” is one I regularly go back to when I’m in need of a mood-booster. Based on the bestselling young-adult book trilogy written by Jenny Han, this series became a massive social media phenomenon when its first season aired in 2022 (we all loved the yearning). Following the three-season TV run, Prime Video greenlit a continuation movie rather than another season to give the story’s final major milestone a cinematic scale.

“The Summer I Turned Pretty” follows Isabel “Belly” Conklin (Lola Tung), a teenager who spends every summer at a Cousins Beach house with her mother, brother, and her mother’s best friend, Susannah (Rachel Blanchard). Susannah’s two teenage sons, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), have always treated Belly like a younger sister. Everything changes the summer Belly turns 16. Having matured, she catches the romantic attention of both brothers, pulling her into a dangerous love triangle.

The original film officially put Blue Sky Studios on the map as a major animation powerhouse and launched one of the highest-grossing animated franchises of all time. Plus, it introduced Scrat, the acorn-obsessed saber-toothed squirrel who went on to become the franchise’s adorable (but unfortunate) mascot.

“Ice Age” follows Manny (Ray Romano), a woolly mammoth who prefers travelling alone, Sid (John Leguizamo), a talkative sloth, and Diego (Denis Leary), a saber-toothed tiger, as they go on a journey to return a human baby to his family. After discovering the child separated from his tribe, the unlikely group sets out across a changing prehistoric landscape while facing dangerous obstacles along the way, determined to reunite the baby with his father.

‘The Blackcoat's Daughter’ (2015)

One of its biggest strengths is its compelling protagonist, who takes a brain-over-brawls approach; rather than outgunning his enemies, he outthinks them with his superior intellect.

Malek plays a CIA analyst whose world is shattered when his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. Using his skills, he identifies those responsible for his wife's murder and blackmails his superiors into giving him a license to hunt them down and get cold-blooded revenge. A novice in the field, Charlie (Malek) is shown the ropes by a gruff mentor, Hendo (Laurence Fishburne). Building to a satisfying conclusion, “The Amateur” is a consistently thrilling ride.

‘Moonfall’ (2022)

“Moonfall” is definitely more of a guilty pleasure flick. This sci-fi disaster-thriller comes from Roland Emmerich, known for “Independence Day,” “Godzilla,” and “The Day After Tomorrow.” It’s unashamedly silly with corny dialogue and a high-concept plot that goes to some ludicrous places. You could certainly pick at its seams, and the whole movie will quickly unravel, but if you switch your brain off for 130 minutes, it can offer throwaway fun.

As the name suggests, “Moonfall” sees the moon literally fall out of orbit, setting it on a devastating collision course with Earth. Former astronaut Jocinda Fowler (Halle Berry) believes she knows the key to saving humanity. With time running out, she has to rely on a disgraced former colleague (Patrick Wilson) and a conspiracy theorist (John Bradley) for help. If you can handle cheesy B-movie vibes, you might enjoy this one.

'Death Race' (2008)

Jason Statham stars in this 2000s remake of 1975’s “Death Race.” From director Paul W. S. Anderson, most known for his sprawling but largely subpar “Resident Evil” series, it was no critical darling, but I have a soft spot for this brash action flick. Its narrative is flimsy, and many of the characters aren’t particularly likeable, but the action comes thick and fast, and the concept of a high-speed race to the death leads to thrilling sequences.

Set in an alternative United States where economic downturn and rising crime rates have demanded a radical solution, Warden Claire Hennessey (Joan Allen) creates “Death Race.” A three-day live-streamed event in which prisoners race in weaponized cars for a shot at freedom. Forced to compete is Jensen Ames (Statham), an industrial worker framed for the murder of his wife. The tournament is petrol-fuelled mayhem, where the only rule is to drive fast and do whatever it takes to cross the finish line.

Sometimes you just can’t beat the classics. I love heading to my local cinema to watch the latest releases, but when I’m picking a flick to stream at home, I regularly find myself looking for classic movies made decades before I was even born. If it’s black and white? All the better, I say.

Clearly, Prime Video appreciates classic cinema as well. The Amazon-owned streaming service is one of the best out there for keeping its library well-stocked with some of the most iconic films ever made. In July 2026, it’s taken a particular shine towards Western movies, adding a strong handful of genre favorites.

That includes the most acclaimed and legendary Western trilogy in history (any movie buff will know which one I’m talking about already). So, if you also enjoy turning back the clocks to enjoy some of cinema history’s very best features, here are the latest classic movies added to Prime Video.

‘A Fistful Of Dollars’ (1964)

The first chapter of what would become perhaps the defining Western trilogy, “A Fistful of Dollars,” kicks off the Dollars Trilogy (sometimes referred to as The Man With No Name Trilogy) in impressive fashion. It also marked Clint Eastwood's first leading role, a Hollywood icon who would become synonymous with Westerns. In this 1964 movie, a stranger (Eastwood) rides into a frontier town and gets embroiled in the feud between two factions, the Baxters and Rojos. To come out on top, he plays the two sides to his advantage. Directed by Sergio Leone, it’s one of the genre’s enduring classic films.

‘Judgment at Nuremberg’ (1961)

Switching tracks for a moment before returning to the Wild West, “Judgement at Nuremberg” is a WWII legal drama that chronicles the Nuremberg trials in which German war generals were put in front of a judge and made to face the consequences of their wartime actions. Directed by Stanley Kramer and starring Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Richard Widmark and Judy Garland, it’s an emotionally charged drama, and an essential watch if you enjoyed last year’s modern big-screen recounting of the trials, “Nuremberg.” While it does take liberties with the real history and features fictional characters, it remains a very moving picture.

‘For a Few Dollars More’ (1965)

Just a year after “A Fistful of Dollars” came its follow-up, “For a Few Dollars More.” I’d argue this is perhaps the more overlooked effort in the trilogy, without the same iconic status as its two companions, but with Sergio Leone again in the director’s chair and Clint Eastwood in front of the camera, it’s a Western classic worthy of your attention. It sees two bounty hunters team up to take down a ruthless Mexican outlaw before his gang can carry out a daring bank robbery. Even if it’s not as iconic as its fellow two movies in the Dollars Trilogy, it’s nevertheless impressive, with some contemporary critics even arguing it’s the strongest of the three.

‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’ (1966)

When I think of the Western genre, the first movie that comes to mind is always “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” Even the name alone has entered the pop culture lexicon with references popping up across media for decades (I’ve used a play on its name several times in my own writing). It’s the most fondly remembered of the Dollars Trilogy without a doubt, and frequently ranked as one of the genre’s finest hours. Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood team up again in this epic that sees two men form an uneasy alliance to locate buried treasures, but they’re competing with an outlaw who has a personal score to settle with them.

‘The Magnificent Seven’ (1960)

Technically a remake of 1954’s “Seven Samurai,” this John Sturges Western takes that movie’s core premise — a group of mercenaries hired to protect a village — and switches the setting from 16th-century Japan to the Old West. Naturally, the original seven samurai become gunslingers in this interpretation of the story, with Steven McQueen and Charles Bronson in their ranks. Ignore the ill-conceived 2016 remake (even Denzel Washington couldn’t save that project), and watch the superior 1960s original instead.

To make matters worse, these free additions usually slip onto the platform without any fanfare or major announcements.

After combing through the latest arrivals on Prime Video, I’ve handpicked five standout films that are genuinely worth watching this week. Best of all, they are completely free to stream, meaning you don't even need a paid Prime subscription to enjoy them.

Whether you’re after an action-packed Western flick, a vampire thriller, or a romantic comedy, you might be surprised to find that the current selection of free-to-stream movies actually includes some great films.

‘The Magnificent Seven’ (2016)

If you’re in the mood for an action-packed film, add “The Magnificent Seven” to your watchlist. It serves as a remake of the classic 1960 western, which itself was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s legendary 1954 masterpiece, "Seven Samurai." “The Magnificent Seven” ends up being a slick, beautifully shot western that doesn’t try to reinvent the genre or explore complex ideas. Instead, it focuses on delivering an entertaining, action-packed adventure with a star-studded cast.

In the frontier town of Rose Creek, ruthless industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) seizes control of the community, forcing residents to surrender their land. Desperate for justice after her husband's death, Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett) hires bounty hunter Sam Chisholm (Denzel Washington) for help. Chisholm assembles a team of six skilled fighters to prepare the townspeople for an inevitable assault, fortifying the town and training its residents for battle.

‘Sunrise’ (2024)

“Sunrise” is part rural folk-horror, part neo-Western, and part psychological thriller. This unique film is at its strongest when it moves away from a typical superhero-style vampire story and focuses instead on Guy Pearce’s unsettling performance. However, one of the most interesting choices from writer Ronan Blaney is how the film places its supernatural elements alongside more grounded threats. Although the lead character is a vampire, his need for blood is portrayed as a painful condition.

Fallon (Alex Pettyfer) is a former police officer who has been transformed into a vampire after a brutal tragedy destroyed his family. Wandering through a remote town in the Pacific Northwest, he crosses paths with a Chinese immigrant family who take him in despite his mysterious nature. As Fallon forms a bond with them, he discovers they are being terrorized by the ruthless local landowner Joe Reynolds (Guy Pearce), the same man responsible for his own suffering.

‘Redemption’ (2013)

Jason Statham is best known for his action movies, but “Redemption” takes a different approach. Written and directed by Steven Knight, this British crime drama swaps big action set pieces for a slower, more character-focused story set against the streets of London. While it still has moments of tension, “Redemption” is far less explosive than many of Statham’s other films, instead leaning into a darker, more emotional and atmospheric crime noir style.

“Redemption” follows Joey Jones (Jason Statham), a former Special Forces soldier living on the streets of London after fleeing his military past. When he discovers an opportunity to take over another man’s identity, Joey uses his skills to enter the city’s criminal underworld and earn money through dangerous work. Along the way, he reconnects with Sister Cristina (Agata Buzek), a nun who tries to help him rebuild his life. After learning that someone close to him has been killed, Joey sets out to track down those responsible.

‘The Duff’ (2015)

Those wanting a more relaxed movie should stream the romantic comedy “The Duff.” If you grew up loving 90s and 2000s coming-of-age classics like “She's All That,” “Mean Girls,” or “10 Things I Hate About You,” this movie operates on that exact same frequency (but with a much healthier dose of modern self-acceptance). “The Duff” is an easy-watching comedy with a massive heart, as it takes a mean-spirited concept and turns it into an empowering message about defining yourself on your own terms.

High school senior Bianca Piper’s (Mae Whitman) life is turned upside down after discovering that her classmates see her as the “DUFF” of her friend group, a nickname she never knew she had. Determined to change how she is perceived, Bianca turns to her childhood friend and popular athlete Wesley Rush (Robbie Amell) for help navigating the social world of high school. As the pair work together, Bianca becomes caught up in a complicated crush and a rivalry with the influential student Madison (Bella Thorne).

‘Wrong Turn’ (2021)

We’re ending this list with a horror movie, simply because it’s my favorite genre. “Wrong Turn” is a complete reboot of the popular 2000s backwoods slasher franchise. Rather than acting as a typical sequel, it takes the basic idea of the original film and puts a fresh spin on it. The movie moves away from the franchise’s usual formula, focusing on a more atmospheric survival story with a stronger social angle. It feels like a mix of “Deliverance,” “The Village,” and “Midsommar,” blending wilderness horror with a tense mystery.

Jen Shaw (Charlotte Vega) and a group of friends travel to rural Virginia for a hiking trip along the Appalachian Trail. After leaving the marked path, they become stranded in the wilderness and encounter a hidden mountain community known as The Foundation. Jen’s father, Scott (Matthew Modine), begins searching for his missing daughter, leading him into the same dangerous territory. With their lives threatened and their trust tested, Jen must find a way to survive.

‘The Martian’ (2015)

It’s set to be a big weekend for Matt Damon, as the veteran actor headlines Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which hits theaters today (Friday, July 17) and is tracking to earn an eye-watering amount of money. If you want to watch some of Damon’s very best flicks before (or after) venturing out to see “The Odyssey” for yourself, “The Martian” is my first-choice pick.

Based on Andy Weir’s novel, this sci-fi adventure sees Damon play Mark Watney, an astronaut who is presumed dead during a hasty evacuation of the big red planet. Only Watney didn't die, and he faces the prospect of finding a way to survive in the harshest of conditions and contact NASA so they can begin a rescue mission. It’s thrilling stuff, and perfect for fans of “Project Hail Mary,” which was also based on an Andy Weir novel.

‘Saving Private Ryan’ (1998)

It almost feels silly trying to convince you to watch “Saving Private Ryan.” This epic war movie from director Steven Spielberg speaks for itself and is widely upheld as one of the greatest WWII films ever made. It deserves its sterling reputation, delivering a visceral war story that’s emotional, triumphant, and consistently engaging. Plus, it packs an impressive cast led by Tom Hanks, with a supporting role for a certain Matt Damon as well.

Opening during the D-Day landings on Omaha Beach in June 1944, “Saving Private Ryan” follows a platoon of American soldiers who are given the task of locating the eponymous private so that he can be reunited with his grieving mother. Trekking across war-torn France, the men, led by Captain John Miller (Hanks), face numerous hardships, and as their numbers thin, start to question if the life of one man is worth such great personal sacrifice.

‘Bottoms’ (2023)

“Bottoms” is one of the silliest movies I’ve watched in years, and I say that very much as a compliment. It completely leans into the chaos, delivering irreverent humor at such a fast clip you might want to watch it twice just to catch all the jokes you’ll miss the first time. It’s also spearheaded by Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri, which is a particularly strong selling point.

Loveable losers PJ (Sennott) and Josie (Edebiri) are two teens out of place in their stereotypical high school where the football jocks serve as the ruling class. After a farcical series of events, they find themselves starting a fight club for girls, which is really a ruse to meet and hook up with popular cheerleaders. It all builds up to one of the most ridiculous finales you’ll ever see, so strap in for a satirical comedy that proves silly can also be smart.

If an action-thriller movie set in the world of spies and global intelligence networks draws frequent comparisons to the Jason Bourne movies, it’s certainly not a bad thing. That was the case for “The Amateur,” which landed in theaters last spring and took such clear inspiration from the Bourne series that it almost felt like a forgotten sixth entry.

It doesn’t quite match the quality of the original Bourne trilogy, but it’s a real cut above the following two installments (2012’s “The Bourne Legacy” and 2016’s “Jason Bourne”). Starring Oscar-winning Rami Malek, also known for his role in TV’s “Mr. Robot,” and with a compelling globe-trotting story centered on a quest for revenge, it’s a worthwhile watch.

Upon release, the $60 million movie grossed $96 million at the box office, a respectable but hardly spectacular result. However, it’s just been added to the Prime Video movie library, which could be the platform for the flick to reach a wider audience and receive extra attention. If you’re an action-thriller aficionado looking for a movie that will keep you engaged from start to finish, here’s why “The Amateur” is a Bourne-like film that deserves your watch time this weekend.

What is ‘The Amateur’ about?

Based on the Robert Littell novel (not Robert Ludlum, who wrote the Bourne books), Charlie Heller (Malek) is a CIA decoder whose entire world is shattered when his beloved wife, Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan), travels to London for a business trip and a senseless tragedy strikes.

In the British capital, Sarah is murdered in a terrorist attack, sending Charlie into a deep depression. Using his professional skills, he profiles those responsible and demands his CIA superior bring them to justice. He’s stunned when they refuse to take direct action.

Resorting to blackmail, he demands that his bosses provide him with the necessary military training to take on the job and asks for immunity to hunt down the assailants himself. But Charlie is no veteran agent, and as he travels the globe to find the men who killed his wife, he has to rely on his brains, using his eye for detail and cunning to stay one step ahead of his targets.

‘The Amateur’ is a gritty thriller you should stream this weekend

Unlike spy contemporaries like “Mission: Impossible” or classic James Bond movies, “The Amateur” is a cold and calculating action-thriller. It doesn’t rely on levity to break the tension, instead taking its subject matter as seriously as Charlie takes his quest for revenge.

It’s a strong choice of tone. Not only does the gritty nature of “The Amateur” reflect the morally grey world of international espionage that Charlie finds himself in, but it also demands that audiences take the movie seriously. The movie also isn’t afraid to question if Charlie has fallen into obsession, even if it ultimately judges his actions largely favorably.

It does have some pacing issues in the early stages. After Rachel’s death, Charlie begins his training under the eye of a gruff mentor (Laurence Fisbourne). You might get a little restless waiting for his mission to begin as the training section drags on, but once he jets off to Paris to start striking names off his hit list, the momentum quickly picks up.

Charlie’s first attempt to execute one of the men responsible for his wife’s death goes south very fast, but over the course of the movie, he becomes a slick operator. He discovers his skills lie in carefully planned attacks, using his brains to draw his enemies into elaborate traps. A late-movie scene set on a rooftop pool in Madrid showcases what a ruthless killer he’s become, and it’s a real high point. It’s a shame the trailer totally spoils the best part.

As the film progresses, “The Amateurs’” narrative scope widens, with Charlie taking on new allies, such as a contact codenamed “Inquiline” (Caitríona Balfe), and Jon Bernthal is thrown into the mix as a CIA operative keeping watch of Charlie. And because this is a spy movie, there’s also a big old scoop of government conspiracy unspooling.

Holding an 87% score from viewers on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear that I’m not alone in my appreciation of this slick action-thriller. The critics' score is lower at 61%, but I think this rating is a little harsh. “The Amateur” might not reinvent the genre, but it’s as well-executed as one of Charlie’s meticulously crafted plans. Plus, with emotional stakes at play, you’ll be invested in the mission and rooting for Charlie to avenge his murdered wife.

16-year-old Elle Woods (Lexi Minetree) begins her junior year of high school in 1995. Just as she expects another perfect year in Bel Air, her family unexpectedly relocates to Seattle, forcing her to leave behind her friends and familiar life. Starting over at a new school, Elle forms new friendships, rivalries and romance as she learns to adjust to her new surroundings. Soon, she develops the confidence and determination that will eventually define the iconic future lawyer audiences already know.

‘Silo’

If you’re a sci-fi fan, you’ll want to add “Silo” to your watchlist now that the first season is available on Prime Video. Set in a toxic future, the series follows the last 10,000 people on Earth as they live inside a gargantuan 144-story underground bunker. It has the feel of a classic 1970s political conspiracy thriller with retro-futuristic visuals and a constant sense of creeping paranoia. The series is planned as a four-season adaptation of Hugh Howey’s book trilogy, with season 3 currently airing weekly on Apple TV.

Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) is a skilled engineer living deep within a massive underground structure that houses the last 10,000 survivors after Earth's surface is deemed uninhabitable. When the silo’s sheriff begins investigating a series of unexplained events before leaving the community, Juliette is drawn into the case. As more people die under suspicious circumstances, she pieces together hidden information about the strict rules governing daily life and the people enforcing them.

‘Murder 101’

Prime Video is clearly looking to compete with Netflix when it comes to true crime documentaries. “Murder 101” is a unique entry in the genre, following a real-life rural Tennessee high school sociology teacher who investigates a case alongside his students. Because the three-part documentary focuses on high school students, it has the energy of a coming-of-age story while being anchored by a gripping investigation. The series explores how confirmation bias can shape the way people see the world and the emotional impact of uncovering disturbing truths.

“Murder 101” follows a high school sociology class as they reopen the decades-old Redhead Murders cold case. Guided by their teacher, Alex Campbell, the students examine evidence, study case files, interview witnesses and survivors, submit public records requests, and work alongside investigators in search of new leads. During their research, they uncover connections suggesting the victims may have been linked to a wider series of killings across multiple states.

Using his skills, he identifies those responsible for his wife's murder and blackmails his superiors into giving him a license to hunt them down and get cold-blooded revenge. A novice in the field, Charlie (Malek) is shown the ropes by a gruff mentor, Hendo (Laurence Fishburne). However, even with some training, he’s still a fish out of water. Quickly realizing he can’t outshoot his enemies, he focuses on outthinking them using his superior intellect.

‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’ (1967)

Without question, among the most iconic western epics of all time, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” definitely falls into the former category. Part of the much-celebrated Dollars trilogy, the movie’s title has entered the pop culture lexicon, a true testament to its enduring appeal. Starring Clint Eastwood, it’s a captivating watch, and the Western genre at its peak.

Set during the Civil War, a wandering stranger (Clint Eastwood) and an outlaw (Eli Wallach) form an unlikely partnership to scam local towns out of bounty money. However, the stranger eventually grows tired of his partner and strands him in the desert. Now at odds, the duo must set aside their differences and work together again when they catch wind of $20,000 in stolen gold buried in a remote cemetery. However, a sadistic criminal is also after the treasure and has an old score to settle. It quickly becomes a race to find the gold first.

‘Road House’ (1989)

A couple of years back, Prime Video released a remake of 1989’s “Road House” starring Jake Gyllenhaal. It went on to become one of the platform’s most successful original movies, with a sequel in development.

The stage is set for a macho showdown as Dalton prepares to clean up the town, one punch at a time.

My favorite movie of 2026 so far has to be “Project Hail Mary,” the visually stunning sci-fi space epic directed by acclaimed filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Adapted by screenwriter Drew Goddard from Andy Weir’s bestselling 2021 novel, the film is certainly one of the strongest entries in its genre in recent years. It’s an optimistic and engaging survival story that puts science at the centre of the action, balancing its big ideas with plenty of humor, emotion, and a focus on human connection.

Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) is a former science teacher who wakes up alone aboard a spaceship with no memory of how he got there or why he was sent into deep space. ‘The Sheep Detectives’ (2026)

Another strong movie in 2026’s lineup is “The Sheep Detectives,” a delightful mystery-comedy that had me in tears by the end. This truly deserved all the praise it received, not only because it’s a beautiful film with a meaningful story about grief, but also because it takes a completely absurd premise and treats its animal protagonists with real heart and distinct, relatable personalities. The film ends up being equally entertaining for adults and kids, offering a genuinely engaging detective puzzle.

George (Hugh Jackman) is a dedicated shepherd who spends his evenings reading murder mystery novels aloud to his flock, completely unaware that his animals can understand every single word. When George is suddenly found dead under highly mysterious circumstances, his exceptionally clever sheep realize he has been murdered. Armed only with the crime-solving logic they learned from his bedtime stories, the flock decides to take matters into their own hooves.

‘Moonfall’ (2022)

While I had high praise for the first two movies on this list, I’m recommending a weaker film purely for those who appreciate sci-fi disaster movies with great visuals, even if the storytelling suffers. “Moonfall” initially plays like a traditional 1990s disaster film before the final act takes a jarring pivot into bizarre sci-fi territory. It’s definitely a guilty pleasure for genre fans, and even though the plot makes very little sense and the script is lacking, it still allows you to completely switch off.

When a mysterious alien force suddenly strikes the Moon, it knocks it out of its regular gravitational orbit and sends it on a catastrophic, fast-decaying collision course straight toward Earth. With only three weeks left before total planetary annihilation, former astronaut Brian (Patrick Wilson), determined NASA executive Jocinda (Halle Berry), and conspiracy theorist KC (John Bradley West) are forced to team up. Together, this unlikely trio launches a desperate, last-ditch mission into deep space.

July is here. That means Prime Video has just added a ton of new highly-rated movies. Each month, the streaming service adds dozens of movie, many of which are critically acclaimed. It just added 69 movies (and shows) on July 1 alone.

But you want the cream of the crop. You need better than just critically acclaimed. So I've gone through the list of everything coming to Prime Video in July 2026 and I've found five movies rated 95% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes. They're close to perfect films, and you're essentially guaranteed to find something you like.

Top of the list is "A Fish Called Wanda," which may be one of the best comedies of the 1980s. If you're looking for something on the more serious side, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" is about as classic as it gets. There's also "Till," which is a powerful Civil Rights film from a few years ago.

For those who want something animated that's fun for the whole family, I've got you covered too. "How To Train Your Dragon" (2010) is a phenomenal animated adventure film worth watching at all ages. Similarly, "The Wild Robot," which comes from the same studio and director as "How to Train Your Dragon," is a must-watch now that it's on Prime Video.

Here are the five new to Prime Video movies in July 2026 that you need to watch this month, each rated 95% or higher by critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

'A Fish Called Wanda' (1988)

Genre: Heist comedy movie

What's it about? This comedy classic stars Jamie Lee Curtis as Wanda. She and her lover, Otto (Kevin Kline), are brought onto George Thomason's (Tom Georgeson) crew. Following a successful heist, they quickly betray George. However, George anticipated their double cross, and now Wanda has to seduce George's lawyer, Archie (John Cleese), to try and find the diamonds they stole.

Why you need to watch it: "A Fish Called Wanda" is hysterical. It's a masterpiece, and I'd argue it's the best performance of Curtis's, Kline's and Cleese's careers. Given that Kline won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, I'm clearly not alone in that thinking.

'How to Train Your Dragon' (2010)

Genre: Animated fantasy movie

What's it about? "How to Train Your Dragon" stars Jay Baruchel as the voice of Hiccup. He's the son of Stoic (Gerard Butler), the village chieftain of Berk, a Viking village subject to frequent dragon attacks. But Hiccup comes to realize the dragons aren't inherently evil when he befriends Toothless, a Night Fury dragon whom Hiccup adopts rather than killing.

Why you need to watch it: This movie proves that it's nearly impossible to score a perfect 100% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Don't let the three critics who disliked this movie dissuade you, though. This movie is one of the best animated fantasy films ever made.

‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’ (1967)

Genre: Spaghetti Western movie

What's it about? Blondie, "The Good" (Clint Eastwood), teams up with Tuco, "The Ugly" (Eli Wallach), to find a stash of stolen Confederate gold. It's an uneasy alliance, as only Blondie knows the name of the grave where the gold is buried, but only Tuco knows the cemetery. Complicating things is the arrival of Angel Eyes, "The Bad" (Lee Van Cleef), who is also on the hunt for the gold and will gladly kill Blondie and Tuco to get it.

Why you need to watch it: This might be the most iconic Western ever. It's certainly the most iconic spaghetti Western, which is a subgenre of Westerns commonly made by Italian filmmakers that often satirized or demythologized the Westerns of the 1940s-60s. You almost certainly know this movie's theme, written by the legendary Ennio Morricone, but you should hit play on "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" just to be sure.

‘Till’ (2022)

Genre: Biographical drama movie

What's it about? "Till" is based on the real-life story of Mamie Till-Mobley (Danielle Deadwyler), an educator and activist whose son, Emmett (Jalyn Hall), was brutally murdered in a hate crime in August 1955. The movie centers around her fight for justice in the wake of her son's death and the impact it had on the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

Why you need to watch it: The lynching of Emmett Till is a horrifying tale, and this movie chooses to show it largely through the eyes of his mother. It's heartbreaking and powerful, and Deadwyler's performance is a must-watch.

‘The Wild Robot’ (2024)

Genre: Animated sci-fi movie

What's it about? "The Wild Robot" stars Lupita Nyong'o as the voice of Roz, a service robot marooned on an uninhabited island. Once she gets her bearings, she has to adapt to life on the island. That quickly includes adopting Brightbill (Kit Connor), an orphaned goose whose parents Roz accidentally killed.

Why you need to watch it: Roz's transition from naive android to adoptive mother is heartwarming. This movie was beloved when it came out in 2024, and it was deserving of its Oscar nominations. I loved it, and I'm positive you will as well.

‘The Girlfriend’

“House of the Dragon” star Olivia Cooke finds herself in another fierce rivalry, but this time her character isn’t fighting over the Iron Throne, but rather the attention (and affections) of Laurie Davidson’s Daniel.

This psychological thriller limited series (which is getting a spin-off, aptly named “The Boyfriend”), sees Cooke at war with Robin Wright, a woman you don’t want to cross. This Prime Video show, which packs in plenty of juicy drama and exciting twists, is so addictive that you’ll probably tear through it in just a single afternoon.

Laura (Wright) is a well-presented member of high society and the doting mother to Daniel (Davidson). But when her son brings home his new girlfriend, Cherry (Cooke), Laura is convinced that her beloved child’s new partner is a manipulative social climber, and becomes determined to drive a wedge between the couple. But is Cherry truly a cunning gold digger in disguise, or is Laura just paranoid and overly protective of her son?

‘The Night Manager’

If you want a Prime Video series you can really sink your teeth into this weekend, check out “The Night Manager.” There are two six-episode seasons to binge, and even if you don’t have time to watch both right now, trust me, you’ll tear through the first season in no time at all.

Starring Tom Hiddleston, this spy drama does an excellent job of keeping you on the edge of your seat, as you attempt to figure out who is playing who. And if Hiddleston isn’t enough star power to catch your attention, the show also features Hugh Laurie, Oscar-winning Olivia Colam and Tom Hollander (No, not Spider-Man, that’s Tom Holland).

In season 1, hotel night manager and former military officer Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston) is recruited by the British Foreign Office to investigate Richard Roper (Laurie), an international businessman believed to be involved in the illegal arms trade. As Pine infiltrates Roper’s inner circle, the stakes are raised, and his true identity is in danger of being exposed.

‘The Better Sister’

Based on the novel by Alafair Burke, “The Better Sister” is an eight-episode limited series that premiered on Prime Video last spring to praise from both critics and viewers. It’s definitely a series that gets its hooks in fast.

The lead pairing of Elizabeth Banks and Jessica Biel is one of the major draws, but what will keep you invested until the final episode is the show’s willingness to swim in morally grey waters. There are also plenty of mysteries spun up across its run, though some critics did argue that it takes a little too long to get around to actually delivering satisfying answers.

Chloe (Biel) is a successful magazine editor living a perfect life with her husband, Adam (Corey Stoll), and teenage son, Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan). All seems well until Adam is murdered, and Chloe’s estranged sister, Nicky (Banks), arrives on the scene. If a murder mystery wasn’t enough drama, Adam was previously married to Nicky, adding a big scoop of family resentment to the thrilling mixture.

Over on Prime Video, the thrillers don’t stop coming. It’s clear that the streaming service's bigwigs know that subscribers gobble up thriller movies like candy, so the Amazon-owned platform is constantly restocking its supply of films full of tension, twists and excitement.

'Death Race' (2008)

Jason Statham stars in this 2000s remake of 1975’s “Death Race.” From director Paul W. S. Anderson, most known for his sprawling but largely subpar “Resident Evil” series, it was no critical darling, but I consider this one a guilty pleasure. Its narrative is flimsy, and many of the characters aren’t particularly likeable, but the action comes thick and fast, and the central concept of a high-speed race to the death is ripe for thrilling sequences.

Set in an alternative United States where economic downturn and rising crime rates have demanded a radical solution, Warden Claire Hennessey (Joan Allen) creates “Death Race.” A three-day live-streamed event in which prisoners race in weaponized cars for a shot at freedom. Forced to compete is Jensen Ames (Statham), an industrial worker framed for the murder of his wife. The tournament is petrol-fuelled mayhem, where the only rule is to drive fast and do whatever it takes to cross the finish line.

'Homefront' (2013)

If one dose of Jason Statham-led action-thrills isn’t enough for you, then you’ll also want to add “Homefront” to your Prime Video watchlist. To be clear, “Homefront” sticks in Statham’s well-established wheelhouse and has no ambitions of refreshing the genre, but if you're eager to see Statham square off against a whole load of bad guys, it’ll get the job done.

Phil Broker (Statham) is a DEA agent involved in an undercover raid on a drug lab. But when the operation goes wrong and his cover is blown, he decides to retire from the force and move to a small town to raise his young daughter, Maddy (Izabela Vidovic). But trouble has a way of finding Broker, and he soon finds himself at odds with a drug lord (James Franco).

The movie also stars Winona Ryder, Kate Bosworth and Frank Grillo, quite the cast list for what is ultimately a disposable action-thriller. But there can be enjoyment from simple ideas that offer no-frills entertainment.

'65' (2023)

I won’t sugarcoat it; I did not like “65.” In fact, I ranked it among my least favorite movies of 2023 (and I saw more than 75 new releases in theaters that year). So, why have I included it in this roundup of new Prime Video thrillers? That’s because my colleague Alix Blackburn argues it’s “one of the most underrated sci-fi thriller movies” and advises you to “ignore the critics.” So perhaps this Adam Driver vehicle will also appeal to your tastes.

Driver plays an interstellar astronaut named Mills, who crash-lands on a mysterious planet that is quickly revealed to be Earth, 65 million years in the past (hence the movie’s name). If the bumpy landing that destroys his craft and leaves him scrambling for a way home wasn’t enough to deal with, prehistoric Earth is home to some very dangerous creatures: dinosaurs. Mills faces a desperate battle to survive, while also taking a fellow survivor of the crash, Koa (Arriana Greenblatt), under his wing.

Richard Gere has long been one of my favorite actors. It is incredibly exciting to still see him taking on compelling new roles, such as his latest part as Bosko, a CIA station chief in the Paramount+ thriller series "The Agency," which is currently airing its second season. Yet, out of his vast filmography, there is one particular movie that resonates with me to this day.

Released in 2002, "The Mothman Prophecies" still generates a healthy creep factor, even after my countless rewatchings. The overarching sense of something watching from a distance, coupled with an underlying feeling of despair for the characters, draws me in every single time.

Starring Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Will Patton, and Debra Messing, "The Mothman Prophecies" pulls you deep into a plot about a town disturbed by a mysterious creature supposedly sent to announce their demise. If you missed this one during its original release, it's streaming right now on Prime Video.

What is 'The Mothman Prophecies' about?

The film begins innocently with happily married couple John (Richard Gere) and Mary (Debra Messing) Klein buying their dream home. However, as they drive home late that winter evening, the opening music already hints at a looming doom. The tone shifts violently when Mary swerves to avoid a terrifying, red-eyed, moth-like creature, triggering a car accident that shatters their future.

John is relieved when Mary survives the crash, but she wakes up utterly changed, whispering an ominous question: “You didn’t see it, did you?” Strategic, isolating camera angles suggest something sinister is watching them from the hospital shadows. Soon after, doctors discover Mary has a brain tumor. She tragically passes away early in the film, leaving John devastated and unable to move on, even a year later.

One night, John drives out into the dark, his racing mind mirrored by the blurring scenery. He inexplicably loses track of time and distance; his car stalls hundreds of miles away in a remote West Virginia town. Seeking help at a nearby house, he is confronted by a paranoid resident, Gordon Smallwood (Will Patton), who claims John has been lurking outside his house for three nights in a row.

Local cop Connie Mills (Laura Linney) arrives to defuse the situation and helps John to a hotel. He quickly learns that the entire town is on edge due to bizarre sightings of a creature identical to the one Mary saw before her accident. From there, the story spirals into a gripping paranormal mystery, drawing John into a web of prophecies where everyone's life is at risk.

Why I recommend you stream 'The Mothman Prophecies'

What I love most about "The Mothman Prophecies" is that it doesn't go overboard with its paranormal elements. Instead, the film successfully leans into the eerie, grounded sensation of what if it’s true? The insular, small-town vibe only adds to the sense of impending doom. There is also plenty of strong acting by Gere and Linney, who pair up beautifully here. They manage to exhibit a strong on-screen chemistry without forcing the plot into an awkwardly placed romance.

The movie doesn't rely on startling ghosts or excessive jump scares, but it delivers plenty of psychological moments that will genuinely shock you. From Mary's chilling appearances after her passing, to the terrifying descriptions of the creature from various townspeople, to the entity who knows far too much — whom only Gordon can see and John can hear — no moment feels overdone.

If you love a good mystery or a cerebral paranormal thriller, make sure to add "The Mothman Prophecies" to your watch list.

With the bandages off, she views her own face in the mirror for the first time, watches her husband move through a room, and realizes exactly what she has been missing. Why I recommend streaming 'All I See Is You'

As someone who has spent more nights than I'd care to admit thinking about the terrifying prospect of going blind, this film didn't just unsettle me; it served as a stark reminder that if you ever have to face that reality, you had better be certain you're with someone you can trust completely.

The movie never treats blindness as a mere metaphor or narrative shorthand; it treats it as reality. The camera frequently mimics Gina's perspective, capturing her recovering and then failing vision through smeared streetlights and blurry faces. We experience sight right along with her as something gained and lost, and the emotional impact hits incredibly hard. It is a brutal, uncomfortable watch for anyone who shares this fear.

Lively does a magnificent job of conveying how quickly a marriage presumed perfect can become poisoned. For anyone afraid of losing their sight, the film delivers a second, sharper blow beyond the physical failure of the surgery. It forces a chilling realization: losing your vision doesn't just mean losing the world around you, it means losing your ability to know who is telling the truth and who is lying straight to your face.

"All I See Is You" is a powerful thriller that plays on some of our most primal fears, and it delivers one hell of a ride.

Meanwhile, Netflix has a new entry in its fan-favorite detective series "Enola Holmes" that sees Millie Bobby Brown reprise her role as the world-famous detective's brilliant little sister. If you're in the mood for a classic, the laugh-out-loud sports comedy drama "A League of Their Own" also just returned to the platform. Finally, over on Prime Video you can catch the hilarious high school comedy "Bottoms," which is a must-watch if you love GOATs of the genre like "Mean Girls" or "Superbad."

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ (PVOD)

I'm still not convinced "The Devil Wears Prada" needed a sequel, but it's impressive how much fun I had seeing this one in theater despite its nearly identical set-up and plot. In the 20 years since Andy (Anne Hathaway) and her turquoise sweater made a splash at Runway, she's built a successful journalism career that comes to a screeching halt in the movie's opening moments.

She's thrown a lifeline when Runway, reeling from a scandal of its own making, recruits her as its new editor to repair the magazine's reputation and steer it back on course. To her chagrin, the icy editor-in-chief Miranda (Meryl Streep) doesn't appear to remember a thing about her former assistant. Convinced Andy isn't qualified for the job, Miranda quickly begins undermining her, leaving Nigel (Stanley Tucci) to once again step in as Andy's confidant and fiercest supporter as they all band together to do the impossible.

‘Obsession’ (PVOD)

I'm a huge horror fan, and "Obsession" is the most terrified I've been watching a movie in theaters in a long time. It's a straightforward premise done extremely well with a star-making performance from Inde Navarrette that continues to haunt my nightmares. She's uncanny and terrifying as Nikki, a young woman who suddenly finds herself more than a little obsessed with her friend and co-worker Bear (Michael Johnston).

He's not-so-secretly in love with her, but when she doesn't return his feelings, he makes a wish on a mystical item called a "One Wish Willow," hoping it will make her fall for him. It works, albeit in a "Monkey's Paw" sort of way, and Nikki's all-consuming obsession transforms his dream romance into something far more sinister.

'Bottoms' (Prime Video)

If "The Bear's" final season has you itching to see more of Ayo Edebiri, look no further. Emma Seligman‘s R-rated queer teen comedy “Bottoms” has returned to Netflix after leaving the streamer back in February, and it's one I recommend to anyone who will listen. Edebiri and Rachel Sennott (“Bodies, Bodies, Bodies”) star as a pair of unpopular teenage best friends who come up with a fool-proof plan to get the attention of their crushes: an all-girls fight club.

Well, technically it's a self-defense club billed as empowering women, but you get the gist. Despite their lack of actual fighting experience, the group gains traction, and soon the most popular girls in school are beating the crap out of each other — until the jig is up and it all goes downhill in spectacularly bloody fashion. If you like movies like "Do Revenge," "Superbad," "Booksmart," or "Mean Girls," I think you'll enjoy "Bottoms."

‘Enola Holmes 3’ (Netflix)

Even with "Stranger Things" now wrapped up, Netflix is still getting their money's worth out of Millie Bobby Brown. She's back as Enola, the brilliant sister of the famous investigator Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill), in this YA spin-off series that's done surprisingly well with critics and audiences alike on Rotten Tomatoes.

This time around, she's set to be married to Lord Twekesbury (Louis Partridge) on the island nation of Malta, but when Sherlock goes missing, their big day gets put on hold as she sets out to track down the world's greatest detective. And hopefully iron out her complicated feelings around marriage along the way. Fans of the previous two installments in this franchise will no doubt be excited to check out this threequel.

'A League of Their Own' (Netflix)

I'm based in Rockford, so I'd be remiss if I failed to shout out "A League of Their Own" arriving on Netflix this month. There may be no crying in baseball, but this all-time sports classic is guaranteed to leave you in tears of laughter. Inspired by the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was created during World War II, the film follows one of the league's showboatist teams: the Rockford Peaches. While the league itself was short-lived, this beloved comedy drama remains a classic that's still widely regarded as one of the greatest baseball movies ever made.

The star-studded cast is packed with memorable performances, led by Geena Davis as Dorothy "Dottie" Hinson alongside Lori Petty as her younger sister Kit Keller, Madonna as the outspoken Mae Mordabito, and Rosie O'Donnell as Doris Murphy. Tom Hanks is equally unforgettable as the hard-drinking, reluctant manager Jimmy Dugan, delivering many of the film's most iconic moments.

Prime Video is a great streaming service for finding your next favorite movie. While Amazon doesn't have the deepest library of original movies, it adds dozens of movies to its streaming service each month. In fact, it just added 69 new movies and shows on July 1 alone.

This week, I've scoured the list of what's on Prime, and I've landed on three must-watch films. At the top of the list is "Project Hail Mary," which is making its Prime Video debut this weekend. Then, there's "Gladiator," a movie that needs no excuse to be watched. Finally, I'm ending things on a high note with "Tropic Thunder," which absolutely would not get made today, yet remains a comedy classic.

'Project Hail Mary' (2026)

Genre: Science fiction movie

What's it about? "Project Hail Mary" stars Ryan Gosling as Grace, a school teacher who awakes to find himself in space, where he meets the alien, Rocky (James Ortiz). Together, they try to solve why an alien dubbed "Astrophage" is killing nearly every sun in the galaxy, while Grace starts to remember who he is and how he ended up as part of Project Hail Mary.

Why you need to watch it: This was my best movie of 2026 until it was finally beaten out by "The Invite" at the end of June. It's an incredible display of technical filmmaking skill, anchored by Oscar-worthy performances from Gosling and Ortiz, who is both the puppeteer for the alien Rocky and the voice.

'Gladiator' (2000)

Genre: Epic historical fiction movie

What's it about? "Gladiator" tells the tale of Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe). Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions. Loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). Father to a murdered son (Giorgio Cantarini), husband to a murdered wife (Ginnina Facio). He will have his vengeance, in this life or the next.

Why you need to watch it: This movie is always worth a rewatch. If you've never seen it before, go watch it now. If you don't like it, I'll give you your money back (but not really).

'Tropic Thunder' (2008)

Genre: Action comedy movie

What's it about? "Tropic Thunder" stars Ben Stiller as action star Tugg Speedman, who, along with Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) and many other (fictional) stars, heads to Vietnam to film a war movie. But when the film's director (Steve Coogan) explodes, stepping on a land mine, and Tugg gets captured by rebels, everything becomes chaos.

Why you need to watch it: This movie is, simply put, hysterical. The cast is excellent, especially Downey Jr., whose Kirk Lazarus is in Blackface as Lincoln Osiris for nearly the entire movie. Even though it's a satirical performance, it almost certainly would stop this movie from getting made today, despite earning the Marvel star an Oscar nomination.

June just wrapped up a great month of streaming content for Prime Video. But we're not done with the slate of summer streaming shows just yet. As July gets underway, the Amazon platform still has plenty of TV treasures primed and ready for the first weekend of the new month.

Given that Prime Video has such an extensive library, with new shows and movies being added to the platform every month, we here at Tom's Guide have decided to make things easier for you and have narrowed the list down to a trio of shows that we think you should check out next.

There's romance in store, of course, courtesy of the swoon-worthy "Every Year After." There's also a big dose of nostalgia in "Elle," the brand-new "Legally Blonde" prequel that just dropped all eight episodes at once. And if you're after a cozy comfort sitcom instead, the criminally underrated "The Middle" is ready and waiting.

'Elle'

Genre: Comedy series

What it's about: This "Legally Blonde" prequel rewinds the clock to 1995, long before Elle Woods (Lexi Minetree) ever set foot in Harvard Law. Instead, we follow the 16-year-old Elle (Lexi Minetree), whose parents uproot the family from her hometown of Bel-Air to the very different city of Seattle. Armed with her iconic bubbly personality and an unshakable love of pink, she navigates new friendships, first crushes, and a grungy school culture that doesn't quite know what to make of her.

Why you should watch it: You don't need to have memorized the original movie to fall for this one, though longtime fans will clock plenty of nods to the Elle we know and love. It's a nostalgic, fluffy coming-of-age story with just enough drama (and a season-long mystery) to keep it afloat. Plus, there's plenty of pink, and who doesn't like pink?

'Every Year After'

Genre: Romance series

What it's about: Based on Carley Fortune's best-selling novel of the same name, this sappy romance follows Percy Fraser (Sadie Soverall), a 28-year-old obituary writer who goes back to her childhood summer hometown, Barry's Bay, for a funeral. There, she comes face to face with Sam Florek (Matt Cornett), her childhood best friend and ex-boyfriend. Told over the course of six years and one week in this small lake town, the series traces how first love and a handful of choices shaped the people they became in the end.

Why you should watch it: If "The Summer I Turned Pretty" left a Percy-and-Sam-shaped hole in your heart, this is the perfect binge after that. It's got the sun-drenched lake-town setting, the ache of a love that spans years, and plenty of emotional gut-punches. Have the tissues ready.

'The Middle'

Genre: Sitcom series

What it's about: Long before the sitcom heavyweights it shared a network with, this family comedy spent nine seasons, starting in 2009, chronicling the chaos of the Heck family. Set in Orson, Indiana, it follows Frankie (Patricia Heaton) and Mike (Neil Flynn), regular Midwestern parents to jock Axl, Sue, an awkward teenager, and Brick, who's intelligent but weird. At the top of the family pyramid are two exhausted parents just trying to keep everyone fed, clothed, and more or less alive.

Why you should watch it: If you've burned through "Modern Family" and "The Office" for the fifth time, consider this your next comfort watch. There's something cozy about it that you don't quite see on TV these days, and it's worth the nostalgic early 2000s ride.

We’re already over halfway through 2026, with July marking the peak of summer, and for many that means less time spent indoors binge-watching shows and more time out making the most of the lighter evenings. Prime Video’s trending chart is in a particularly strong place right now, with “Off Campus” and Nicolas Cage’s “Spider-Noir” both firmly holding onto top positions over the past few weeks. While those two are definitely worth a watch if you (somehow) haven’t caught up yet, it’s the newer entries on the list that are especially interesting this time around. So, here are three standout picks from this week’s Prime Video top 10 that deserve a watch.

‘Every Year After’

I think most romance fans can agree that watching a yearning-filled movie or show during summertime just hits differently, especially when it's set in the season itself, with characters longing for each other or caught in a complicated love triangle. “Every Year After” leans into the classic childhood-friends-to-lovers trope, with two people too afraid to cross that line. Based on Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel, this Prime Video series is packed with slow-burn romance, plenty of yearning, and enough juicy drama to keep you hooked.

Percy Fraser (Sadie Soverall) returns to the lakeside town of Barry’s Bay after a decade away, with the death of Sam Florek’s (Matt Cornett) mother brings her back. The story unfolds across dual timelines, alternating between six formative summers in their teenage years and the present day. As childhood friends become inseparable and eventually fall in love, a devastating mistake tears them apart. Back in Barry’s Bay, Percy must confront painful memories and the unresolved relationship with Sam that has shaped both of their lives.

‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’

Moving onto the topic of love triangles, I had to include “The Summer I Turned Pretty” now that it’s reappeared in the top 10. This coming-of-age romantic drama makes for the perfect summer rewatch, thanks to its seasonal setting and famously messy love triangle. Based on a young adult book trilogy by Jenny Han, the series is also set to get a movie (currently in development), which will serve as a feature-length continuation and finale following the events of season 3. I don’t think this was a surprise to anyone given how huge the show became on Prime Video.

Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) has spent every summer of her life vacationing at Cousins Beach with her mother, brother Steven (Sean Kaufman), and the Fisher family. As she turns 16, Belly discovers everything has changed. Conrad (Christopher Briney), the older Fisher brother she's admired for years, has become distant, while the outgoing Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) begins seeing her in a new light. Soon, Belly finds herself caught between the two brothers, as unexpected revelations reshape their futures both at the beach and back home.

‘See You at Work Tomorrow’

It seems subscribers are loving romance shows right now, considering we’re ending this list with another one. “See You at Work Tomorrow” is a Korean workplace romantic comedy adapted from the Kakao webtoon Back to Work, which racked up over 200 million views by capturing the unglamorous, highly relatable grind of corporate life. The series follows two colleagues who start off as enemies before, of course, developing feelings, complete with all the charm and slow-burning tension that comes with it.

Cha Ji-yoon (Park Ji-hyun) is a seven-year office employee at Saeum Electronics who has settled into a monotonous career rut after years in the same department. When an internal reshuffle places her under Kang Si-woo (Seo In-guk), a newly assigned department manager known for his strict discipline, her predictable routine is immediately disrupted. Despite his cold and intimidating presence, Si-woo becomes increasingly attentive to Ji-yoon, and their professional relationship slowly shifts.

‘Bones and All’ (2022)

Starting in the deep end, we have the psychological thriller “Bones and All,” which also functions as a romantic horror flick. Adapted from the young adult novel, the movie introduces a reality where certain people are born with an insatiable, uncontrollable urge to consume human flesh. Yes, that is a wild premise, but this film uses it as a dark metaphor for trauma and the desperate human need to find someone who accepts your deepest flaws.

Maren Yearly (Taylor Russell) is a teenage girl in 1980s America who has a compulsive urge to consume human flesh, a condition she has lived with since childhood. After her father abandons her with a recording explaining her past and urging her to survive alone, Maren sets out across the country to find her estranged mother and understand where she came from. Along the way, she meets Lee (Timothée Chalamet), a drifting young man with the same condition, and the two form a bond.

‘Gilmore Girls’ (2000)

I think almost everyone has probably heard of “Gilmore Girls.” This comedy-drama, which originally ran for seven seasons from 2000 to 2007, quickly became a comforting, endlessly rewatchable show. Its biggest trademark is the hyper-fast, witty banter. While a standard TV script page equals about one minute of screen time, “Gilmore Girls” scripts were nearly double the length because the characters talk at a million miles an hour. There’s a fun fact for you.

Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) is a sharp-witted single mother who left home as a teenager and now runs an inn in the small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. She raises her academically gifted daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel), and the two share an unusually close bond, often behaving more like best friends than parent and child. When Rory is accepted into an elite private school, Lorelai is forced to reconnect with her wealthy, controlling parents to help pay tuition. Both women have to juggle studies, careers, friendships, and complicated romantic relationships.

‘The Martian’ (2015)

For sci-fi fans, “The Martian” should be at the top of your watchlist. Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, it grossed over $630 million worldwide and earned seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, largely because it made space survival look remarkably realistic, with a strong performance from Matt Damon. The film rests almost entirely on Damon’s shoulders, as he spends a large portion of it alone on screen, talking directly into video logs.

During a manned mission on Mars, astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is struck by debris during a sudden storm and left behind when his crew evacuates, believing he has died. Regaining consciousness alone on the planet, he returns to the damaged habitat and assesses his limited supplies. With no communication to Earth, he records logs while engineering ways to grow food, generate water, and repair equipment. NASA later discovers he is alive through satellite imagery and works to re-establish contact.

‘Saving Private Ryan’ (1998)

If you’ve seen “Disclosure Day” and need to watch more movies from filmmaking icon Steven Spielberg, you need to stream “Saving Private Ryan.” Upon its release, the film completely revolutionized the war genre by introducing an unprecedented level of raw, immersive, and uncompromisingly violent realism. The film's first 23 minutes (chronicling the Omaha Beach landing) is widely considered one of the most legendary technical achievements in cinema history.

Set during World War II, the story begins with the Allied landing at Omaha Beach in Normandy in 1944, where Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) survives intense combat while leading a unit of U.S. Rangers. Shortly after, military command assigns him a mission: Locate Private James Ryan (Matt Damon), whose three brothers have all been killed in action. Miller and his squad travel deep into German-occupied France, moving through destroyed villages and frontline battles while gathering information about Ryan’s whereabouts.

‘World War Z’ (2013)

I love a good zombie movie, and “World War Z” has to be one of the genre’s more overlooked entries in recent years. Directed by Marc Forster, this action-thriller features zombies that can actually sprint, which is arguably more terrifying than the slow, stumbling kind. The visual effects showcase massive CGI swarms that pile on top of each other like ants, scaling giant walls and overwhelming vehicles. It feels like “Contagion” mixed with “28 Days Later” on an absolutely massive blockbuster scale.

Former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) is caught in a sudden outbreak of a rapidly spreading infection that turns people into violent, fast-moving infected. When the crisis erupts during a traffic jam in Philadelphia, Gerry and his family barely escape the collapsing city and are evacuated by a UN contact to a military ship serving as a mobile research hub. In exchange for keeping his family safe, Gerry agrees to travel across multiple countries to trace the origin of the outbreak and identify possible patterns in how the infected behave.

As a die-hard super fan of Reese Witherspoon, it comes as no surprise that Legally Blonde is just as integral to my origin story as any other Y2K-loving millennial. If Elle Woods didn't stand up for herself as a fish-out-of-water fashion major amongst Harvard's snooty elite — and prove them damningly wrong — in the 2001 comedy, I fear my life's trajectory would be so vastly different.

From first watch to millionth viewing, I have continued to love the Legally Blonde Universe (referred to as the LBU from now on), so much so that I enjoyed the borderline-average sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde, and fell head over heels for the musical adaptation. In a similar vein to the Mean Girls Universe (MGU) — which has followed a parallel path as a coming-of-age movie and is considered now as a 2000s period piece, there has been an ignored sequel, a treasured musical turned 2024 film remake and an obsession with pink, plaid and plastic surgery — the LBU was ready for a revamp.

So when the announcement came that Amazon MGM Studios was invested in telling Elle's prequel story, I was pretty much convinced that I was going to adore everything about the series. And IMO, the LBU prequel was set for success from the get-go, starting with the flawless casting of newcomer Lexi Minetree as the younger version of the beloved lead.

But after the release of the teaser trailer last month, my higher-than-most-hopes fell a bit flat, with the synopsis somewhat similar to the movie's narrative. Instead of Boston's dull legal atmosphere, we're taken back to 1995 and facing 16-year-old Elle's current dilemma — an untimely move from sunny LA, California, to rainy Seattle, Washington. This follows an unfortunate accident (read: botched nose job) which sees Elle's plastic surgeon dad, Wyatt Woods (Tom Everett Scott), needing to lay low for a while. Along for the ride comes Elle, her fascinating and equally bubbly mother, Eva (June Diane Raphael) and the most important Woods family member — a pint-sized, yet still tough-as-nails pup, Bruiser.

Warning: spoilers ahead

Now, post-watching the entire 8-episode season, I fear my expectations weren't met, in more ways than one. But before I go on, there are some really excellent things this prequel does well, which I know after reading many a review on the series, have been glossed over.

Successfully fuelling 'Legally Blonde' nostalgia

For starters, as noted, Lexi Minetree is the perfect teenage Elle Woods. From her spritely demeanour to her immaculate 90s costuming and delivery of lines that were definitely copy/pasted from the film's script, Minetree breathes a whole new life into the titular character and does it well. Even in times of despair (a.k.a. mean girl nastiness), you can't help but champion for Elle, evoking the same rooting-for-the-hero feelings and nostalgia of the original.

Even the ensemble cast is a force to be reckoned with, despite fitting into LBU character archetypes. My standout being Donna, the school's secretary, played by Amy Pietz, acting as Elle's refuge and recreating an indirect homage to Jennifer Coolidge's Paulette. Donna is quirky, loveable and all-around the best, supportive figure to the students, and it's unfortunate she falls under an injustice as the series treks on. Also, I'll firmly sit on team Madison-deserves-better (played by Jessica Belkin), Elle's LA bestie who offers her sage advice and pushes the story along in times of need, despite a yucky, less-than-an-episode-spanning fallout.

Further, I could go on and on about how much I enjoyed the dynamics and transformations of Elle's parents, who are largely absent in other forms of the LBU. I particularly enjoyed June Diane Raphael's Eva, who does a complete 180 throughout the show and owns up to her part in Elle's ongoing kerfuffle. I also liked the setting of 90s Seattle being flannel shirts, stripes and grunge music, and the period-accurate drabness of it all, unless you were looking at Elle's wardrobe of mostly hot pinks, flowers and sparkles.

But that's where I need to draw the line.

Shaping Elle as the sparkly-pink outsider

For all the positives, come a steady stack of negatives that need addressing, starting with the biggest elephant in the room — Elle being the outsider. As a tried and true fan of the movie, the prequel series contradicts a lot of the film's plot — and in some instances, entirely refilms established sequences in different settings. The only instance where this revisit (or nostalgic nod) truly works is in the first two minutes of the show, where we see a similar recreation of the film's title sequence play out, but instead of delivering the bedazzled pink card to her sorority dorm room, it's left on a table of gifts at Elle's Sweet 16th.

Within the first two episodes, we see a handful of similar scenes from the film. There’s Elle showing up to a 'pool party' in a bikini, a crying moment like the Warner-breakup scene when her parents tell her she's moving, and her telling Bruiser they were in this together. That last one felt fine at first before it clicked in my head that she told him the exact same line before they moved into the Harvard dorms. There's also a lot of talk about her being a Gemini in the series, much like in the film — and as a girl obsessed with her birth chart, I found some fun in it, until it became a weird plot point to make her bond with her mother over past mistakes. (Spoiler alert: she's not a Gemini!).

These are tiny gripes in the grand scheme of things, but it just felt like Elle Woods wasn't this outsider in pink heels who rises above it all, as she's depicted in the movie. Instead, we find ourselves at another instance in Elle's life where she is a fish-out-of-water, and therefore makes us (the audience) feel like the film doesn't hold as much weight as it used to. Elle is supposed to be the heroine that doesn't let the challenge overcome her — and she is — but, it's kinda odd to think that she's had multiple obstacles she's needed to overcome.

Sure, you could go back and quote her Harvard video essay, where she had to choose between 2ply and 3ply toilet paper for Delta Nu, but that was the whole point of the film — going to law school was (and is) supposed to be hard.

What was equally as frustrating was the subplot in the series where Elle and her friends uncover a money-theft scam within the school. The plot itself is addressed throughout the series before the big unveiling in the seventh episode, but it's not really the driver of the show.

Coupled with a not-so-needed line from Donna asking if Elle wants to become a lawyer at the end, it just felt forced to have this big Elle Woods-style deposition, especially since at this point in time, she doesn't want to be a lawyer — she wants to be a 'Cosmo Girl'. Cue another subplot where Elle's trying to win an internship for Cosmopolitan magazine and use it to go back to LA. There's a Breakfast Club-esque episode, too, which was kinda fun and a nice reprieve back into the investigation subplot.

But even then, both of those plot points collide and are ultimately a cause for chaos, as the Seattle friends learn of her desire to go back to LA in her Cosmo essay, after crushing the exposé and helping save the school from further disarray.

Overall, while there was a lot to like about the LBU prequel series, especially Lexi Minetree, it's not what I had expected of the series. After watching the entire first season, I had hoped it would resemble much of the latter episodes, where Elle is totally fearless and is making big fashion-forward decisions in a pink power suit. I would have loved to have seen more of that strong, stylish and straightforward confidence that made Elle, well, Elle Woods in the movie, not-so-much the outsider that she's now styled to be in the series.

That’s why I’ve combed through the recent additions for you and picked out three must-watch thriller movies. These include a chilling survival drama based on a true story, a warped romance starring Timothée Chalamet and a hilarious crime-fueled thriller from the director of “The Hangover” and “Joker” (also, “Joker 2,” but let's ignore that one).

These are three new to Prime Video thriller movies worth adding to your watchlist over the coming days.

'Alive' (1993)

“Alive” is one of the multiple movies about the real-life experience of a Uruguayan sports team that crashed in the Andes Mountains and had to survive for more than two months in the hostile region. While I’d argue 2023’s “Society of the Snow” is the best feature film dramatisation of this story that captivated the world, “Alive” is no slouch and, in this survival thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Josh Hamilton, successfully chronicles the hardships endured by these men thrown into a frozen nightmare.

Flying over the Andes mountain range on October 13, 1972, the members of the Stella Maris College's Old Christians Rugby Team are stranded in the snow-blanketed region after a plane crash. To survive the harsh conditions, they are forced to take extreme measures and even contemplate the unthinkable: eating their deceased teammates. Eventually, a small group sets off on a perilous trek in the hopes of finding rescue.

'Bones and All' (2022)

“Bones and All” offers up Timothée Chalamet as you’ve never seen him before, and I don’t just mean because his trademark curls have been dyed red. In this dark thriller that mashes together a host of tones, including romance and horror, Chalamet plays a young man with an uncontrollable appetite for human flesh. It's not only a skin-crawling movie, but also a surprisingly tender one, with a sweet (but doomed) love story at its core.

The flick opens with the adolescent experience of Maren (Taylor Russell). Abandoned by her father on her 18th birthday as he’s unable to cope with her hunger for human flesh, Maren becomes a drifter and meets Lee (Chalamet). The two become companions and then lovers. But their odyssey across America leads to a confrontation with Sully (Mark Rylance), a warped “eater” obsessed with Maren.

War Dogs (2016)

One of my more memorable movie-watching experiences was watching a PG-cut of “War Dogs” on a plane. The R-rated flick had been censored to remove all the curse words. This crime thriller comes from “The Hangover” and “Joker” director Todd Phillips, so let’s just say there is a lot of cursing. This actually made the movie absolutely hilarious, but not for the intended reason. Fortunately, Prime Video is adding the uncensored version this week. So you can enjoy it with all the f-bombs very much intact!

Inspired by a true story, “War Dogs” centers on David Packouz (Miles Teller) and Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill), two small-time hustlers who discover that military equipment contracts are posted publicly for anybody to bid on. So, they create their own arms-dealing company and start selling hundreds of millions of dollars worth of ammunition to the American government. Before long, they find themselves in over their heads and in hot water.

Why now is the perfect time to stream 'Legally Blonde'

There's a reason that Elle Woods and "Legally Blonde" at large still charm a quarter-century later. It's because, while Elle's original goal may be boyfriend-related, the Robert Luketic-directed flick is a romantic comedy between a young woman and her own potential. Elle was always intelligent, ambitious and resilient; she just needed to get dumped by Warner to see all of that for herself.

This live action/CGI hybrid adapts Leonie Swann’s bestselling 2005 novel, capturing the same warmth and sophistication that made ‘90s family movies like “Babe” so special. While it’s rated PG and perfect for families, it doesn’t shear away from heavier, more mature ideas. If you enjoy cozy British murder mysteries, the charming animal logic of “Shaun the Sheep,” or the witty humor of modern ensemble comedies, this woolly whodunit is an absolute delight.

George Hardy (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who spends his evenings reading detective novels aloud to his beloved flock, never realizing they understand every word. When George is found dead under mysterious circumstances, the local investigation stalls, prompting the sheep to launch an amateur investigation of their own. Led by the clever Lily (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), with the loyal Mopple (Chris O'Dowd) and the independent Sebastian (Bryan Cranston), the unlikely detectives venture beyond their familiar meadow.

‘Superman’ (2025)

There's no better time to rewatch “Superman” now that “Supergirl” has flown into theaters, since James Gunn is clearly intertwining their stories in the DC universe. What I love most about “Superman” is that it skips the traditional origin story we all know about, instead dropping audiences straight into the life of a younger hero who’s already established but still finding his footing. The result is a 129-minute celebration of everything that makes Superman such an enduring character, complete with stunning visuals that are the cherry on top.

A few years into his career as Earth’s protector, Superman (David Corenswet) is already an established hero balancing life as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent with his responsibilities as the Man of Steel. When he intervenes in a growing international conflict, his actions spark widespread controversy and give ruthless tech billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) the opportunity to turn public opinion against him. As Luthor orchestrates an elaborate plan to destroy Superman’s reputation, Clark joins forces with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and several other metahumans to uncover the truth.

‘Ruthless’ (2023)

Adding “Ruthless” to this list is a bit of a rogue pick, but sometimes all you need is an intense action-thriller with a simple plot. “Ruthless” is a straightforward, unpretentious late-night popcorn movie that knows exactly what it wants to be, giving a veteran actor the chance to go full action hero. If you love tense, street-level vigilante stories where a determined protagonist wages a relentless one-man war against a criminal underbelly, this 2023 release delivers exactly what its title promises. Just don’t expect many surprises along the way.

Harry (Dermot Mulroney) is a high school wrestling coach who is still grieving the murder of his teenage daughter. When he discovers one of his students, Catia (Melissa Diaz), is being abused at home, he steps in to protect her, only for her to be swept into a dangerous human trafficking operation. Refusing to stand by, Harry launches his own relentless rescue mission, following a trail that leads him deep into the criminal underworld of Las Vegas. He soon uncovers a far-reaching network of traffickers and risks everything to save Catia before it's too late.

If you like your Westerns with a little more meat behind the gun smoke, it’s time to head over to Tubi before "The Old Way" rides off into the sunset. This 2023 revenge tale stands as one of Nicolas Cage’s best — and most overlooked — Westerns, and it is well worth catching before it departs the platform.

Cage stars as Colton Briggs, a reformed gunslinger who traded his pistols for a wife, a child, and the quiet life of a general store owner. The peace he fought so hard for is shattered in an instant when the son of a man he killed decades ago rides into town looking for payback, leaving Briggs' wife dead in his wake. Strapping his old irons back on, Briggs refuses to leave his 12-year-old daughter behind. Instead, he brings her along for the ride, forcing her to see exactly who her father used to be — for better or worse.

"The Old Way" is streaming on Prime Video right now, and it is well worth your time, even if Westerns aren’t your usual jam. Seeing Cage trade his signature quirkiness for a somber, grounded performance alongside a remarkable young co-star is a genuine treat. This is one hidden gem you shouldn't miss.

What is 'The Old Way' about?

Colton Briggs (Nicolas Cage) is a retired gunslinger living a quiet life. Two decades ago he was a cold-blooded killer with a fearsome reputation, but the love of his wife Ruth (Kerry Knuppe) pulled him out of that world for good. Now he runs a general store, tends a small farm, and is raising his 12-year-old daughter Brooke (Ryan Kiera Armstrong). The only thing that troubles him is how withdrawn Brooke can be as it reminds him of his past.

Everything changes when four outlaws ride up to the farm. Their leader, James McAllister (Noah Le Gros), is the son of a man Colton gunned down 20 years ago and has come to settle an old debt in blood. With Colton and Brooke away in town, the gang murders Ruth and leaves a taunting message behind for him to find.

When the marshal urges him to grieve and let the law handle it, Colton has to make an important call. He digs out his old gunfighter's clothes and burns the homestead to the ground. Then, rather than leave Brooke in someone else's care, he saddles her up and brings her along on the hunt. He'll find revenge or die trying.

Why I recommend you stream 'The Old Way' right now

As someone who thinks a lot about the traits and burdens we pass down to our children — often without ever meaning to — this movie struck a powerful chord. I went in expecting a disposable, run-of-the-mill Nic Cage shoot-’em-up, but it proved to be surprisingly deep.

Look beneath the surface, and "The Old Way" isn't just about a man hunting the gang that murdered his wife. It's about a father slowly realizing that his daughter is inheriting the exact same coldness he spent 20 years trying to bury. Fortunately, the film doesn't bog itself down in heavy-handed melodrama; it keeps its eyes on the revenge plot, delivering a story that is both action-packed and, in many spots, deeply touching.

Cage delivers some of his finest, most controlled work here, perhaps his best since "Bringing Out the Dead". But the film's biggest surprise is young Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Brooke. She plays the girl with a genuinely unreadable, chilling stoicism that makes her character fascinating to watch. Her performance leaves you wondering whether Colton is protecting his daughter from the world, or accidentally mentoring the frontier's next deadly gunslinger.

"The Old Way" isn't a flashy or perfect movie by any means. But if you’re a fan of Nicolas Cage or looking for a Western with a psychological edge, it’s a journey well worth taking.

“Elle” functions as an official TV prequel to the iconic 2001 film “Legally Blonde,” taking place six years before the events of the movie. Executive producer Reese Witherspoon actually revealed that she was directly inspired to create the spinoff after watching the massive success of Netflix’s “Wednesday,” realizing that audiences would love to see how an iconic character's distinct personality was forged during their high school years. It already seems like a bright, breezy, and fun piece of summer TV.

The show follows teenage Elle Woods (Lexi Minetree) in 1995, years before she becomes the confident law student audiences know from the films. After her family relocates from Bel-Air to Seattle, Elle finds herself starting over at a new high school, where she must form new friendships and get through the everyday chaos of adolescence. However, that burnout gets a bit of a boost when, due to a departmental reorg, she begins working under Kang Si-woo (Seo In-guk), who is known to have a cold, Mr. Darcy-esque rigidity. Soon, though, the coworkers find themselves sharing some unexpected chemistry.

Why you should watch it: If it's heart and humor you're after in your weekend watch, this office-set romance has plenty of both. Directed by Cho Eun-sol and written by Kim Kyung-min, the 12-episode first season blends witty workplace satire with palpable romantic tension.

'Eli Manning Presents: The Undercovers'

'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice'

What it's about: Two estranged childhood friends reconnect as teenagers. The film is inspired by seemingly impossible events that took place in the freezing darkness of the North Sea in September 2012.

“Last Breath” follows a team of saturation divers working on pipelines deep beneath the North Sea. During a routine repair mission, a technical failure causes their support vessel to drift off course, leaving diver Chris Lemons (Finn Cole) stranded on the seabed hundreds of feet below the surface. Cut off from his oxygen supply and communication systems, Chris faces impossible odds as his crewmates and the ship's crew race against time to bring him home.

‘Sinners’ (2025)

My favorite movie of 2025 was undoubtedly “Sinners,” the masterful vampire horror film from Ryan Coogler, which won four Academy Awards out of a historic 16 nominations. So I was surprised to see it leaving Prime Video this month. “Sinners” represents Coogler's first entirely original, non-franchise studio blockbuster. The film was a massive critical and commercial powerhouse, grossing over $370 million worldwide, and remains a pulse-pounding masterpiece that stands tall as one of the definitive cinematic achievements of the decade.

Set in 1932 Mississippi, twin brothers Smoke and Stack Moore (Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown after years working for Chicago gangsters. Hoping to start fresh, they use stolen money to open a juke joint for the local community. As friends, family members and musicians gather for the club's opening night, a mysterious outsider named Remmick (Jack O'Connell) brings a deadly supernatural threat with him. Trapped inside as the danger grows, the brothers and their allies must fight to survive.

‘Hot Fuzz’ (2007)

Comedy fans who somehow haven’t experienced “Hot Fuzz,” add it to your watchlist now. This action-packed comedy from Edgar Wright serves as the second and most commercially successful installment in the legendary Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy (nestled between “Shaun of the Dead” and “The World’s End”). I do think “Hot Fuzz” is the best out of the bunch, as it’s a beautifully structured cinematic puzzle box packed with explosive set pieces and great banter between Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is London's most accomplished police officer, who is unexpectedly reassigned to the seemingly peaceful village of Sandford. Struggling to adapt to small-town policing, Angel is partnered with the enthusiastic but inexperienced Danny Butterman (Nick Frost). What appears to be a quiet community soon takes a darker turn when a series of deadly accidents occur. Convinced that the incidents are connected, Angel launches an investigation, determined to uncover secrets hidden beneath Sandford's picture-perfect surface.

‘10 Cloverfield Lane’ (2016)

Anyone in a sci-fi mood after watching “Disclosure Day” on the big screen should stream “10 Cloverfield Lane,” a psychological sci-fi thriller directed by Dan Trachtenberg and produced by J.J. Abrams. There’s so much dread in this film that you’ll probably need something lighter afterwards, but it proves you don’t need giant budgets or citywide destruction to make the “Cloverfield” franchise a success. In fact, “10 Cloverfield Lane” is arguably the strongest entry, largely thanks to its deeply compelling performances.

After a car accident on a remote Louisiana road, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up injured in an underground bunker owned by a man named Howard (John Goodman). He claims he rescued her from a catastrophic event that has made the outside world uninhabitable. Alongside another resident, Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.), Michelle tries to adjust to life in the shelter, but Howard's erratic behavior and controlling nature leave her questioning whether she can trust him.

‘The Menu’ (2022)

Last on this list is another deeply unnerving thriller that serves as a full-course psychological feast. “The Menu” is best enjoyed with as little knowledge as possible, so I don’t want to give away any potential spoilers. Instead, I’ll say it’s an incredibly fun, mean-spirited, and darkly hilarious cinematic experience that feels like a cross between a luxury food documentary and Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None.” It definitely leaves a deliciously bitter aftertaste, perfect for anyone who enjoys their social satire served with a heavy dose of dark suspense.

Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and her date Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) travel to Hawthorn, an ultra-exclusive restaurant located on a remote private island. The evening is hosted by celebrated chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes), who has prepared a lavish multi-course dining experience for a select group of wealthy guests, critics and business figures. As each course is served, the diners realize they are part of something far more elaborate than a luxury dinner.

To save you the hassle of browsing the dozens of recent arrivals yourself, I’ve combed through the slate and found three thrillers to watch this week.

My latest picks include movies fronted by two of the genre’s most popular stars, Liam Neeson and Gerard Butler, as well as a certified Hollywood classic. The latter may be more of a legal drama, but I guarantee you’ll find it engrossing and deeply compelling. These are the three new to Prime Video thriller movies to add to your streaming watchlist this week.

‘12 Angry Men’ (1957)

I’m slightly stretching the definition of a thriller to include this one, but then again, “12 Angry Men” is just as electrifying and compelling as anything else I’ve watched in the thriller genre. It’s a masterclass in screenwriting, with one of cinema’s greatest-ever scripts. It’s no slouch in other crucial departments either. Sidney Lumet’s legal drama is regularly cited as one of the best and most influential movies ever made, and it deserves every ounce of adulation it's received over the decades.

Set in the sweltering heat of a New York City courthouse during the sticky summer season, 12 jurors convene to determine the guilt of a young boy accused of murdering his father. The men might not be the ones on trial, but as their discussion unfolds, each one’s character is thoroughly examined. Initially, 11 of the jurors believe the boy is guilty without question, and it’s up to Henry Fonda’s Juror No. 8 to present the alternative case.

'A Walk Among the Tombstones' (2014)

Liam Neeson-fronted action-thrillers are a comfort watch to me. Yes, it’s a little odd to consider movies filled with violence, criminals, and usually a gruff protagonist comforting, but Neeson had made a name for himself in the genre by bringing predictable (but usually enjoyable) thrills to the table. In fact, “A Walk Among the Tombstones” is one of Neeson’s better action-thrillers, giving Neeson a role with a little more meat on the bone.

Matt Scudder (Neeson) is a retired NYPD detective, now working as a private investigator. When he’s approached by a wealthy drug dealer (Dan Stevens), he’s hired for a complex case. The dealer’s wife was kidnapped, and despite the requested ransom being paid, she was still brutally murdered. He wants her killers found and brought to justice. As Scudder investigates the grisly killing, he sinks into New York’s criminal underworld, soon encountering Ray (David Harbour), a sadistic criminal.

‘Plane’ (2023)

“Plane” is a no-nonsense thriller that leans into its own predictability. Even the movie’s title is extremely matter-of-fact, and I appreciate it when a film has a self-aware streak. This 2023 action-thriller doesn’t have genre reinvention on its agenda and instead aims to please with Gerard Butler playing a suitably kick-butt action hero and Mike Colter offering strong support. I’m just disappointed the sequel, tentatively titled “Boat,” got canned just a couple of weeks before production was due to begin.

In “Plane,” Butler plays Brodie Torrance, a pilot forced into an emergency landing when lightning threatens the safety of his plane and passengers. The snag is that the aircraft has touched down in a war-torn region, and the survivors are immediately taken hostage. Torrance has no choice but to team up with an accused murderer, Louis Gaspare (Colter), who was on the airplane in FBI custody. They’re an unlikely team, ready to save the day.

In case you haven't heard, it's a Spike Lee summer. Ever since his beloved New York Knicks broke a 53-year drought to win this year's NBA Championships, the legendary filmmaker has been joyfully hitting the streets of New York in celebration with, well, everybody. The whole spectacle has looked like a scene straight out of one of Lee's NYC-set flicks, none more iconic or summery than "Do the Right Thing."

Taking place over the course of a single day in Brooklyn — the most sweltering day of the year, to be exact — the 1989 indie comedy encompasses summer, all relentless heat, rising tensions and residential liveliness.

And if all of that post-win, Spike-approved good energy isn't enough of an impetus to rewatch the cinematic classic, then the fact that "Do the Right Thing" is set to leave Prime Video at the end of the month should be reason enough. Here's why you should hang out with Mookie, Da Mayor, Mother Sister, Radio Raheem and the rest of the Stuyvesant Avenue crew before they depart the streaming service on June 30.

What is 'Do the Right Thing' about?

Written, directed and produced by Spike Lee, the events of "Do the Right Thing" play out across a single summer day in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant area, following Lee's character Mookie as he navigates his relationships with his Black-American neighbors (played by Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Bill Nunn and Roger Guenveur Smith, among others) and the Italian-American owners of the local pizzeria at which he works. (Danny Aiello, John Turturro and Richard Edson make up the latter dough-punching contingent.)

As the temperatures continue to ratchet up, the simmering racial tensions between those two groups boil over after Mookie's buddy Buggin' Out (Giancarlo Esposito) demands that the pizzeria display prominent Black public figures on its "Wall of Fame," a denied request that leads to a neighborhood boycott.

Why I recommend you stream 'Do the Right Thing' on Prime Video

Spike Lee had made ambitious and energetic films prior to "Do the Right Thing" — including "She's Gotta Have It" and "School Daze" — but his 1989 ode to New York summer remains arguably his most seminal work all these decades later, one pulsing with infectious vibrancy, social conflict, biting humor, raw emotion and unshakeable heat.

The film earned two Academy Award nominations, one for Lee's screenplay as well as for actor Danny Aiello's supporting performance) and has since been ranked one of the greatest films of all time by Sight and Sound's 2022 survey of film critics, curators, archivists and more.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 92%, with its critics' consensus praising: "Smart, vibrant and urgent without being didactic, 'Do the Right Thing' is one of Spike Lee's most fully realized efforts – and one of the most important films of the 1980s." So do the right thing and give this Spike Lee masterpiece a rewatch before it's gone.

It’s set to be a busy week for new movies across the most popular streaming services. Several platforms, including Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+, will have new films for subscribers to watch.

Netflix has a new comedy movie that pairs John Cena and Eric André as siblings; HBO Max has a horror described as “the scariest movie you’ll ever hear,” and the latest installment in the blockbuster “Avatar” franchise heads to Disney+. If all that wasn’t enough, there’s also a trio of worthwhile options on premium streaming, including a fantastic thriller movie that ranks in my top 10 movies of 2026 (and I’ve seen 50+ new films this year).

‘Tuner’ (PVOD)

"Tuner" is one of my favorite thriller movies of 2026 so far, and nowhere near enough people caught it in theaters. Even with its strong 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers did not turn out for this tense watch starring Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman. That’s why I’m hoping its arrival on premium streaming will signal a fresh wave of attention, because it richly deserves a wider viewership. It’s gripping and builds to an excellent finale.

Woodall plays Niki White, an apprentice to renowned New York City piano tuner Harry Horowitz (Hoffman). Suffering from a sensitivity to sound that he describes as an “allergy to loud noises,” he was once a virtuoso but no longer plays. In need of money, he discovers an aptitude for cracking safes and falls in with a criminal gang. At the same time, he meets and starts dating a music student, Ruthie (Havana Rose Liu). But as the stakes get higher, Niki’s two lives are thrown together, and he is forced to face the music.

‘Power Ballad’ (PVOD)

Director John Carney is known for his musical comedies like “Once,” “Sing Street,” and “Begin Again,” and his latest project, “Power Ballad,” falls within the same genre. After all, if you’re good at something, why do anything else? Starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, “Power Ballad” is a generally charming watch, even if it’s not up to the quality of Carney’s best work. Plus, it centers on a stolen song, but the tune in question is pretty terrible.

Rick (Rudd) is the lead singer of a wedding band in Ireland. Once hoping to make it as a serious musician, he gave up his dreams to raise his daughter. When he meets former boy band member Danny (Jonas) at a wedding, the two spend the evening jamming. Weeks later, Rick is stunned when Danny records and takes credit for one of Rick’s original songs, and the track becomes a global hit. Determined to be recognised for his work, Rick sets off to confront Danny, but by doing so risks everything he cares about.

‘Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour’ (PVOD)

Billie Eilish’s biggest concert movie to date was filmed during her globe-spanning Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour, in support of the album of the same name. Shot during Eilish’s sold-out run at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena, this movie gives you the best seat in the house as the American singer rattles through her earworm hits, including “Happier Than Ever, “Birds of a Feather” and “Bad Guy.” It’s a must-watch for dedicated Billie Eilish fans.

Most interesting about this concert film is that Eilish co-directs alongside James Cameron, yes, that James Cameron. On the big screen, it was a 3D event, and while the home streaming release can’t replicate the use of the technology (remember when 3D TVs were a thing?), It’s a very slick production overall. It’s not often you get to enjoy a concert movie starring one of music’s biggest names and directed by a Hollywood legend.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ (Disney+)

Speaking of James Cameron, the latest installment in his box office-conquering “Avatar” franchise heads to Disney+. While this third entry in the sci-fi series did still gross an eye-watering sum, its total was significantly down on its predecessor, so I’m assuming a lot of viewers were waiting to catch “Fire and Ash” on streaming. If you enjoyed the previous two “Avatar” movies, it’s hard to see this one as disappointing, as it offers all the same jaw-dropping visuals and incredible world-building, even if its narrative chops are thin.

In “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” former human turned Na’vi, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), must lead his family into uncharted territory after being targeted by a new fire-obsessed clan, alongside contending with an old enemy, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). The plot is serviceable, though it recycles many beats from “The Way of Water.” But really, who is watching “Avatar” for the plot? This franchise has always been about the visuals, and they’re on point. Still, by the end of its chunky 200-minute runtime, the series does feel like it's starting to run out of gas.

‘In the Hand of Dante’ (Netflix)

“In the Hand of Dante” is one of the week’s more interesting offerings. It’s a drama that packs both flashbacks to a period setting and a modern-day thriller-style storyline that is quite violent. Plus, it offers not one, but two, roles for the typically excellent Oscar Isaac. It’s based on Nick Tosches novel of the same name and also stars Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, John Malkovich, Martin Scorsese, Al Pacino and Jason Momoa. That’s quite the cast list.

In a meta twist, Tosches is a character in the movie, played by Isaac. He’s an author living in New York, recruited by the mafia to confirm the authenticity and steal the Italian poet Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, written in the poet's own hand. This violent modern-day story is intertwined with scenes set in the 14th century. In these, Isaac plays the poet Dante. The NYC portion is presented in black and white, with the historical sequences filmed in full color.

‘Little Brother’ (Netflix)

“Little Brother” is certainly not the first comedy flick to mine humor from the idea of two mismatched siblings. Heck, Hollywood has been recycling this trope for decades. So, I’m confident in saying this new Netflix comedy isn’t going to win many points for originality, but if it can make subscribers laugh, then it’ll have served its primary purpose. With John Cena and Eric André in the lead roles, it may well achieve that important goal.

Cena plays a successful real estate agent who lives an orderly life. This well-maintained lifestyle is thrown into chaos when his eccentric “little brother” (André) appears on the scene and proves to be a walking disaster magnet. The trailer suggests this movie will be heavy on slapstick comedy with Cena playing the straight man and André the unpredictable wild card.

‘Undertone’ (HBO Max)

“Undertone” is a fairly pedestrian horror. Don’t go in expecting a memorable experience akin to current genre favorites “Obsession” and “Backrooms.” However, if you set your expectations accordingly, you might find this supernatural horror decently chilling. Its hook is that it’s built around sound, invoking fear in its viewers with spooky noises. In fact, only two members of the cast appear on screen, with the rest only in voice.

Evy (Nina Kiri) is the host of a popular horror podcast, recording the latest episode from her home, where she also cares for her ailing mother (Michèle Duquet). When Evy and her co-host (Adam DiMarco) are sent a series of audio recordings that chronicle a couple’s paranormal experience, the skeptical Evy is drawn into a terrifying evening of sinister specters. As the night progresses, she’s forced to consider that some ghosts might be real.
