Over the past couple of years, between price hikes and shifting priorities, even the best streaming services have become more akin to cable TV with prices to match, especially at the higher "ad-free" tiers.

Almost every streaming service, save Apple TV, has multiple subscription tiers, including one with advertisements. These ad-supported memberships tend to be less expensive than the higher tiers and in some cases offer fewer features, like a lack of live sports or no downloads.

With that in mind, how often are advertisements interrupting your movies or TV shows? We tested seven of the major platforms to find out.

Tom's Guide testing process

We tested seven streaming platforms with the same process for both movies and TV shows.

These are the streamers I looked at:

• Disney+
• HBO Max
• Hulu
• Netflix
• Paramount+
• Peacock
• Prime Video

We tried to test out shows and movies of similar lengths within five minutes on either side. For movies, we watched films that were 2 hours long. For shows, we tried to find two episodes of about 60 minutes each, within five minutes.

We charted how many advertising breaks were inserted into the media, including starting ads. We also tracked how much added time the advertisements added to the overall runtime of the shows and movies.

Movie advertising

Surprisingly, how platforms break up their movies varies wildly between the number of breaks and how much added time they have.

If you want to avoid advertisements, Paramount+ and Peacock may be the way to go with only one ad roll at the start of the movies and nothing while it plays.

Here's how it broke down:

Netflix had the most ad breaks with nine, but those breaks were typically only 30 to 45 seconds with one or two commercials.

HBO Max had five ad breaks, but like Netflix, they only totaled two minutes. There were a couple of times during "Howl's Moving Castle" when I looked away and almost missed a couple.

The longest ads came from Prime Video, which only had four ad breaks but each one typically lasted around a minute and a half. It added over eight minutes to the process.

Disney+ was close behind with five ad breaks that added seven minutes and 45 seconds to "Fantastic Four: First Steps."

We're not doing winners and losers with these tests, but Paramount+ and Peacock waste your time the least and actually let you watch the movie.

TV show advertising

Unlike movies, most streaming services insert the same number of ad breaks in shows — between four and five, including ads that run before the show starts. The big difference lies in the added time.

For this test, we picked a series and watched the first two episodes of the show as long as they were in the 55- to 60-minute range.

Here's how it shook out:

Of the streaming platforms, Disney+ comes out the worst again.

I will note that I was only able to sign up for Hulu and Disney+ as a bundle. The Disney platform is a mess, and Hulu stuff is jumbled in with Disney content, which can be quite annoying when you're trying to find just Disney titles or just Hulu titles. Even clicking the Disney+ tab still sees Hulu shows or movies shoved into the different panels.

I specifically watched the Disney+ original series "The Punisher" for this test, and found between the first two episodes an average of over eight minutes of added runtime. Paramount+ was second worst with exactly eight minutes of added time between the two episodes of "Halo" I watched.

During the Paramount test, I got an error code during the second episode of "Halo," and the ads all disappeared. I did check out "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and "Dutton Ranch" just in case and got similar results, though those shows' episodes don't exactly hit 60 minutes.

Netflix may be the best value at only two minutes added time per episode. While watching the recently canceled "The Boroughs," there were only four ad breaks, but they varied in length. One was a minute, but the shortest was a quick 15 seconds.

How much the ad-supported subscriptions costs

If you're considering downgrading or signing up for one of the ad-supported tiers, they cost about the same across every platform, save the Disney+ and Hulu bundle, which combines both for $12.99 a month.

Here's what watching all those ads will cost you:

Some services like HBO Max and Peacock offer annual subscriptions, which will save you a dollar or so per month. Plus, Amazon Prime Video comes with a Prime subscription if you subscribe to that for $139 a year or $14.99 per month.

Otherwise, beyond HBO, most platforms cost $8.99 for the ad-supported subscription. Peacock is the cheapest at $7.99 by itself.

Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña) runs the CIA's Lioness program, which plants female operatives undercover to get close to targets in the war on terror. Season 2 ended with Joe's team pinned down in a firefight after a mission built around a kidnapped member of Congress. Season 3 puts Joe up against foreign operatives and betrayals that hit closer to home. And this time, both her husband and daughter become collateral damage.

'The Challenge: Cutthroat' season 42

After nearly 30 years on MTV, "The Challenge" is leaving the network for the first time and moving to Paramount+. It's marking the occasion by reviving one of its meanest formats. Cutthroat drops 24 veterans and rookies into Thailand and splits them into three teams, where the whole team has to cross the finish line together to claim a piece of the $500,000. But here's the catch: each team's captain decides how the money gets divided, and nothing stops a captain from keeping the whole pile.

'Average Joe' season 2

Season 1 of "Average Joe" turned a Pittsburgh plumber's life inside out. Joe Washington (Deon Cole) buried his father after learning the old man had stolen $10 million and a Lamborghini from the Russian mob. He then proceeded to spend ten bloody episodes trying to survive people who wanted it back. Season 2 doesn't let him off the hook. A new threat tied to the same mob puts his family in danger again, and the hunt for answers takes Joe and his crew out of Pittsburgh and all the way to Cape Town, where things aren't quite getting any better for anyone involved, but it's more of the same satisfying action if that's what you're looking for.

Paramount+ ranks as one of our best streaming services thanks to its strong library of binge-worthy TV shows and blockbuster movies. It’s the latter category that really draws my attention as a dedicated movie buff, and recently I’ve been combing through the catalog for hidden gems.

Fortunately, I didn’t need to look very hard, because Paramount+ is home to a host of great movies that I believe to be a little underrated. Whether that be because of their critical scores, because they struggled to break even at the box office, or just because they lack the name recognition of Paramount+’s most popular titles. These five films deserve some love.

That’s why I’ve put together this roundup of underrated Paramount+ movies to shine a spotlight on a collection of high-quality movies that you might not have streamed already.

‘The Island’ (2005)

Perhaps defending a Michael Bay movie will cost me some credit with the movie buff crowd, but I don’t care. This 2005 sci-fi action movie Starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson is a total guilty pleasure watch. Bay leans on his trademark penchant for explosions in the second half, but the openning portion offers an intriguing dystopian story, and there’s an entertaining mystery at the movie’s core. On a Bay scale, it’s pretty great.

Set in a futuristic 2019 (this released in 2005), “The Island” takes place within a slick facility due to the outside world being contaminated by a pathogen. The residents live by a strict set of rules, and each week one is chosen by random lottery to leave and go live on a luxury island. However, this facility is hiding some dark secrets, and when Lincoln (McGregor) discovers the truth, he teams up with Sarah (Johansson) to escape.

‘Better Man’ (2024)

Musical biopics are all the rage right now; look at the recent box office success of “Michael” as the latest proof. So, I found it more than a little frustrating that “Better Man,” a wildly inventive drama focused on the life and career of British singer Robbie Williams, didn’t just struggle but outright bombed, grossing $22 million against a $100m budget. This fantastic movie, stuffed with Robbie’s earworm tracks, deserved better.

Perhaps it was the fact that Robbie’s fame has never quite translated to the U.S. market (he’s a superstar in the U.K., not so much Stateside), or maybe it was the oddball decision to cast Robbie as a CGI chimpanzee in this big-screen biopic (The real Williams voices the computer-created protagonist). Yes, this was a strange choice, but trust me, it works in the final movie, and this movie explores the perils of fame supremely well.

‘Mean Creek’ (2004)

Movies about bullying can often feel like a patronizing PBS afterschool special, so kudos to the filmmakers behind 2004’s “Mean Creek” for avoiding this pitfall and instead delivering a psychological drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat. This movie builds anxiety. In the first act, you'll have an uneasy feeling that something is going to go wrong. It all leads to a very tragic incident that changes the lives of its young cast.

In a small Oregon town, shy school kid Sam (Rory) and his older brother, Rocky (Trevor Morgan), invite stand-offish bully George (Josh Peck) to accompany them on a boating trip. However, their goal isn’t to make friends with George. They plan to humiliate him as revenge for a physical altercation with Sam. It’s a cruel scheme, and it rapidly backfires, forcing the adolescent characters to face very grown-up consequences.

‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ (2023)

Another example of a great movie struggling at the box office is “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.” This fantasy heist movie is based on the popular tabletop role-playing game, and pays respect to its source material, while ensuring that newcomers aren’t left behind. It’s a real popcorn movie, boasting charming characters, some surprisingly strong humor and plenty of big-budget action. It deserved way more attention in theaters.

Starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page and Hugh Grant, “Honor Among Thieves” spins a classic “Dungeons & Dragons” tale of an unlikely band of adventurers joining forces to embark on a dangerous mission to locate (and then steal) a lost relic. As all good D&D campaigns should, things don’t always go as planned, and watching the team adapt on the fly to each bump in the road is the real fun of this blockbuster.

‘Mean Girls’ (2024)

2024’s “Mean Girls” never really got a fair shake. From its announcement, the necessity of a reimagining of Tina Fey’s classic 2004 teen comedy was questioned. But here’s the thing: This isn’t a cheap cash-in that just recycles the original. It’s actually an adaptation of the “Mean Girls” Broadway show. So, yes, it’s a full-blown musical. Packed with enjoyable show tunes and a great performance from Reneé Rapp as the iconic Regina George, we perhaps didn’t need a 2020s spin on “Mean Girls,” but I’m glad we got one. To borrow a phrase, it’s totally fetch.

The fundamental setup is the story you know. The formerly homeschooled Cady Heron (played by Angourie Rice) moves from Kenya to America, where she attends North Shore High School and discovers teenage social cliques are even more ruthless than the savanna plains. Invited to join the Plastics, a trio of the school’s most popular students, she gets a crash course in “Girl World” and hatches a plan to bring the Plastics down.

Another weekend is here, which means the question of what to watch is fresh on our minds. It's slim pickings this week among the new releases across the best streaming services, especially on Netflix, where a godawful Kevin Hart comedy is the main headliner this weekend.

Instead, I'd urge you to check out the much funnier sports comedy on Apple TV, "The Dink." It's got pickleball and "New Girl" star Jake Johnson's thirsting after an older woman; what's not to love? Over on paid video-on-demand platforms, you can catch "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" for more of the Pedro Pascal and baby Yoda dynamic duo fans fell in love with from the show. Paramount+ has a new Avatar movie, "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender," that I'm not convinced needed to exist, but if it means more Toph kicking ass in my life, then yes, please.

Over on Prime Video, you can catch the darling animated adventure "The Wild Robot" from the same creator of "Lilo & Stitch" and "How to Train Your Dragon" series. Finally, Netflix just got the second part of "Wicked" if you're looking to get our sing-along on this weekend. So without further ado, let's dive into the best new movies to watch this weekend.

'The Dink' (Apple TV)

One of the few original movies debuting on streaming this week is "The Dink," a new Apple TV sports comedy from director Josh Greenbaum ("Strays" and "Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar"). My boy Jake Johnson stars as a washed-up tennis pro named Dusty Boyd who finds a shot at redemption in the unlikeliest of places: on the pickleball court.

Through a bizarre twist of fate, Dusty ends up joining a pickleball quartet made up of older women, where he quickly develops a crush on their charismatic leader (Mary Steenburgen). But his newfound passion for the sport comes with high stakes, as he’s forced to face off against his longtime nemesis with the future of his father's country club hanging in the balance. The film also features Chloe Fineman, Patton Oswalt, Fortune Feimster, Chris Parnell, Ben Stiller, and a scene-stealing Aaron Chen as Dusty’s trusty sidekick.

'Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu' (PVOD)

The lowest-grossing Star Wars movie in history made its way to paid-video-on-demand platforms this week. You're better off waiting for it to arrive on Disney+ in a few months, but if you need your Baby Yoda fix now, have at it. "Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" never quite justifies its full-length movie treatment, feeling instead like a mini "Mandalorian" marathon retrofitted to the big screen, which might explain the poor theatrical performance.

The galaxy's dreamiest bounty hunter and his pint-sized companion return for a new adventure. Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu take on a mission for the New Republic to rescue Rotta the Hutt (voiced by "The Bear's" Jeremy Allen White), Jabba's heir, from a rival crime syndicate to get some juicy intel on an Imperial warlord. Their assignment spirals into a galaxy-spanning adventure filled with all the blaster fights and Force magic you'd expect of a Star Wars outing.

'Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender' (Paramount+)

Did we really need more of Team Avatar? Eh. Debatable. Will I be sat down to watch this weekend? Absolutely. If only to see Toph (voiced by Dionee Quan) get the epic fight scenes we all hoped for in "The Legend of Korra." Directed by Lauren Montgomery, the film takes place after the events of the original animated series and follows an older Avatar Aang (voiced by Eric Nam), now grown up and setting out with his friends on a mission to rebuild the long-lost Air Nation.

To do that, he'll need an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction, but if it falls into the wrong hands first, it spells doom for the Air Nation's future. Expanding the world of “Avatar” with a new chapter in Aang’s journey, this has all the makings of an essential watch for longtime fans.

'Wicked: For Good' (Netflix)

John M. Chu’s 2025 movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, "Wicked: For Good," just landed on Netflix — though if you ask me, there are much better musicals on Netflix that are more worth your time. Let's be real, all the best "Wicked" songs are in the first act, so "For Good" was never going to stack up, but it was still a satisfying conclusion for the story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) with plenty of earworms and big-budget set pieces to dazzle you into a stupor.

"For Good" picks up right after "Wicked's" dramatic conclusion, with Elphaba now in her Wicked Witch of the West era on the run from the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum). Many of her old pals from Shiz now lead the mob calling for her head, though others lead the search only to find her before they do. Glinda and Elphaba clash over the Wizard's true intentions and what's best for Oz, but when a mysterious storm sends a young girl from Kansas (and her little dog too) crashing into their world, it puts their already strained relationship to the ultimate test.

'The Wild Robot' (Prime Video)

"The Wild Robot" is one of several animated movies I refuse to shut up about, so when I saw it landed on Prime Video this week, I knew I had to give it a shout-out. With Chris Sanders, the same creative tour de force behind "Lilo & Stitch" and "How to Train Your Dragon," at the wheel, you know you're in for a treat. This DreamWorks treasure had me full-on ugly crying in the theater when it came out, thanks in large part to Lupita Nyong’o’s deeply moving performance as Roz, a lost robot turned reluctant parent to an orphaned gosling (Kit Conner).

Also along for the ride is everyone's favorite zaddy, Pedro Pascal, as a fox that could give Nick Wilde a run for money. Oh, and Matt Berry makes a cameo as a beaver — I'm letting y'all know so you don't get jump scared like I was. It's your standard fish out of water tale, beautifully told with gorgeous animation that easily rivals the "Spider-Verse" films in both style and ambition.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 4 premiere

Genre: Science fiction series

What's it about? "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, captain of the USS Enterprise. He's joined by familiar names Spock (Ethan Peck), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn) and several others who have appeared in previous "Star Trek" movies and shows.

Why you should watch it: Season 4 will cover the fourth year of the Enterprise's five-year mission, and it's been a largely well-received show through its first three seasons. Season 3 was less well-received than the previous two, but with just seasons 4 and 5 to go, this is the perfect time for you to start watching.

'The Chi' season 8

Genre: Drama series

What's it about? "The Chi" is arguably to Chicago what "The Wire" is to Baltimore, at least in terms of how it explores life in the city. Created by Lena Waithe, it centers around a large ensemble cast in the Southside of Chicago. In this final season, a murder has rocked some of our cast, while others are struggling with everything from the prison system to the trials and tribulations of parenting.

Why you should watch it: If you need a series to binge, "The Chi" has you covered with 88 episodes to stream right now. Not all seasons are created equal, but more than a few are genuinely great. The one catch is that, unlike "The Agency," this former Showtime series still requires Paramount+ Premium to watch it.

'UFC Fight Night: Ankalaev vs Guskov'

Genre: Live sporting event

What's it about? This week's edition of "UFC Fight Night" was supposed to be a light heavyweight bout between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Magomed Ankalaev and Khalil Rountree Jr. But Rountree had to withdraw due to injury and was replaced by Bogdan Guskov.

Why you should watch it: You can't binge a live sports event. But getting sports like the UFC is a major reason for having Paramount+. If Guskov can win, it will be a massive upset, so don't miss it.

'Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender' (2026)

Genre: Animated fantasy movie

What's it about? A follow-up to the Nickelodeon series "Avatar: The Last Airbender," this movie takes place 13 years later. It reunites Avatar Aang (Eric Nam) and his gang as they search for Tagah (Dave Bautista), an airbender who, like Aang, survived the purge of the Air Nomads by becoming frozen in ice.

Why you should watch it: While it's unnerving to hear these iconic characters voiced by new voice actors, I'm still excited for this movie. The original series was one of the best animated shows of the past few decades, and it's been a while since we've gotten a meaningful new chapter.

'Everybody Wants Some!!' (2016)

Genre: Comedy movie

What's it about? "Everybody Wants Some!!" stars an incredible ensemble cast that includes Blake Jenner, Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Ryan Guzman, Tyler Hoechlin, Will Brittain and Wyatt Russell. Arguably a spiritual sequel to "Dazed and Confused," it follows the lives of several college baseball players in Texas in 1980.

Why you should watch it: If "Dazed and Confused" and its 1970s setting are too dated for you, "Everybody Wants Some!!" is a (slightly) more modern take on the coming-of-age tale. It's also an excellent period piece, something that Linklater has nailed more than once in his career.

'Glory' (1989)

Genre: Epic war movie

What's it about? "Glory" tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the first all-Black regiment in the U.S. military. It's an ensemble performance that features Matthew Broderick and Cary Elwes as officers, as well as Morgan Freeman, Andre Braugher, and Denzel Washington as some of the former slaves and freedmen fighting in the infantry ranks.

Why you should watch it: "Glory" is nearly four decades old, but still holds up visually against its modern counterparts. Denzel also wins an Oscar for his performance as Trip, who often serves as a devil's advocate-like figure throughout the movie. It's a performance that leads to some emotionally powerful moments, and a movie that's a must-watch.

What's it about? This spin-off in the "Drag Race" franchise features past queens, mostly from the original series. They return at the invitation of RuPaul, who still plays the roles of host, mentor and head judge. Each week, contestants are given different challenges, and in the end, only one queen will be left standing.

Why you should watch it: If you're a fan of "RuPaul's Drag Race" and you're not already watching "All Stars," what are you doing? If you haven't gotten into the iconic competition series, start with the season 11 premiere and work your way up to today's (July 17) finale.

'Tyler Perry's Ruthless' season 6

Genre: Drama miniseries

What's it about? This spin-off of "The Oval" stars Melissa L. Williams as Ruth, who has become entangled in a powerful sex cult. Six seasons in, she's now pregnant with the child of The Highest (Matt Cedeño), who leads the cult, and that's finally allowed her to wield power within it.

Why you should watch it: I'll be honest, this show sounds absolutely insane. But people love Tyler Perry's shows, so it felt wrong not to mention that one of his series had just returned for a sixth season. Clearly, something is working with this series.

'UFC Fight Night: Du Plessis vs Usman'

Genre: Live sporting event

What's it about? UFC 329 has come and gone, but there's still plenty of mixed martial arts live on Paramount+. This week, former UFC Middleweight Champion Dricus du Plessis squares off against former UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman for a middleweight bout in the octagon.

Why you should watch it: You can't binge a live sports event. But getting sports like the UFC is a major reason for having Paramount+. Especially when it's two former title holders. Since it's technically a show, I couldn't leave it off the list this weekend.

'Hacksaw Ridge' (2016)

Genre: Biographical epic war movie

What's it about? Based on the 2004 documentary The Conscientious Objector," this movie stars Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss. As a Seventh-day Adventist, Doss refused to wield a weapon during World War II, opting instead to serve as a combat medic.

Why you should watch it: Say what you will about Mel Gibson as a person, but he can certainly direct a movie. So I have to recommend still checking this movie out for artistic reasons. It's also worth seeing the portrayal of Doss's incredible story, which sees him become the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

'The Untouchables' (1987)

Genre: Crime movie

What's it about: "The Untouchables" is loosely based on the true story of the fall of Chicago gangster Al Capone (Robert De Niro). Set in 1930, it stars Kevin Costner as Bureau of Prohibition agent Eliot Ness, who forms a team willing to stand up to the notorious criminal and bring him to justice.

Why you should watch it: You can't accuse this movie of not having a flair for the dramatic. It definitely is willing to give the Hollywood treatment to the story of Capone's arrest and imprisonment for tax evasion. But you won't be complaining after watching the performances from Costner, De Niro and Sean Connery. The latter won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Officer Jimmy Malone.

'Wardriver'

Genre: Crime thriller movie

What's it about? "Wardriver" stars Dane DeHaan as Cole, a hacker. After getting caught up in a cyber heist, he's lured into a deadly game of cat and mouse. If he's not careful, a botched line of code could see him dead.

Why you should watch it: This one is complicated. On the one hand, it got rave reviews from critics. It's currently rated 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. But audiences were far less kind, scoring it just 57% fresh. You'll need to stream it this weekend to see who is right.

Thomson), in the fictional town of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island.

Over the course of three seasons and 27 episodes, the late-19th-century coming-of-age drama follows Anne as she makes a home for herself on the siblings' ancestral farm of Green Gables, dealing with schoolyard bullying, class differences, burgeoning friendships, childhood trauma and small-town life along the way.

'1883'

If you want a less whimsical and more weathered take on the frontier genre, this "Yellowstone" prequel recounts the gritty origin story of the famed Dutton family, following James and Margaret Dutton (played by country icons and real-life couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill) as they flee poverty in Texas and journey west through the Great Plains to seek a better future for their family in Montana. (There, they'll found the ranch that Kevin Costner's sixth-generation patriarch John Dutton runs in the "Yellowstone" flagship series.)

A stark retelling of Western expansion, "1883" also features Oscar nominee Sam Elliott as Shea Brennan, a tough-as-nails cowboy with immense sadness in his past, and dots its sweeping landscapes with some pretty starry cameos, including Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Billy Bob Thornton.

'Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman'

Jane Seymour stars as the titular Michaela Anne "Dr. Mike" Quinn in "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman," a CBS Western series that ran for six seasons from 1993 to 1998. Following the death of her physician father, the female doc moves from post-Civil War Boston to the rugged frontier town of Colorado Springs, where she'll have to try to win over skeptical townsfolk who are less than open to a working woman, let alone one with progressive, humanitarian ideals.

As Dr. Mike settles into the community, she unexpectedly becomes the adoptive mother of three orphaned children — Matthew (Chad Allen), Colleen (Erika Flores) and Brian (Shawn Toovey) — and enters into a relationship with a rugged mountain man named Byron Sully (Joe Lando).

July 4th has come and gone somehow, and another, hopefully less fireworks-filled weekend is here. As always, the best streaming services are serving up a ton of new movies to pick from for your weekend viewing pleasure, only a small fraction of which are actually worth your time.

Of the new additions this week, "Backrooms" in all its surreal horror is the main headliner. It's fun and hypnotizing and less scary than you might think — and now you can get lost in its liminal, yellowed hell from the comfort of your own couch. Over on Netflix, you can catch Chloe Zhao's haunting period drama "Hamnet" to see if it lives up to last year's Oscar hype. A similarly critically acclaimed cyber-heist thriller, "Wardriver," just landed on Paramount+.

That's it for the new new stuff. There's another newish movie I think continues to be slept on. If you're going to pay to buy/rent a movie this weekend, I'd wait for "Backrooms" to come to a subscription streamer and put that money toward seeing Boots Riley's "I Love Boosters" instead. This movie is too damn good to flop.

'Hamnet' (Netflix)

This is another movie I've been putting off watching forever, but now that "Hamnet" is on Netflix, I might as well see what all the Oscars fuss was about. It follows an alternate history sort of take on the early life of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife Agnes (Jessie Buckley), as told from her perspective in a rare turn.

An unimaginable loss for the family inspires the Bard's famously tragic play, and that's when Buckley's raw take of a mother's grief (which won her the award for Best Actress) will have you reaching for the tissues, I'm told.

'Wardriver' (Paramount+)

You may not have heard of "Wardriver" before it landed on Paramount+ (I know I didn't), but critics clearly loved it. This cyber-heist thriller managed a rare 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes (and an admittedly much lower 57% audience score). You'll have to watch to see who got it right.

Dane DeHaan stars as Cole, a low-level hacker who gets roped into a cyberheist that's hopelessly above his pay grade. When he tries to drain the bank account of an unsuspecting woman with a rich benefactor, the operation spirals into a cat-and-mouse chase with deadly stakes. And his growing feelings for said woman certainly don't complicate things. But like any typical noir protagonist, he only realizes too late that he's in over his head.

'Backrooms' (PVOD)

If you missed this one in theaters, I'd hold off on catching "Backrooms" until it hits a subscription streaming service. But if you, for whatever reason, need to watch "Backrooms" this weekend, it just hit video-on-demand platforms. This movie is absolutely as weird and uncanny and genuinely good as people say it is, don't get me wrong. Though, of the two, "Obsession" left the bigger impression on me in theaters.

As for what "Backrooms" is about, ain't that the question. How do you describe a dream? Give that dream a bunch of yellow hallways, a sense that you're being watched, and a single, large pirate, and you've got "Backrooms." It's a surreal nightmare, a slow-burning psychological horror that captivates. Also, there's no lore you need to know (trust me, I went in knowing zilch). Understanding is second to pure spectacle in this one, like a more horror-leaning "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once."

'Sinners' (HBO Max)

We watch "Sinners" every Sunday. That's the rule. That's the goal now. Mind you, I've been calling it church since last July, but if y'all would rather listen to Jeremy Culhane (in a pitch-perfect impression of that one angry white guy I always forget the name of — there's a lot of them out there these days) then at least you're listening to somebody about how phenomenal this movie is.

"Sinners" is a romantic horror movie, heavy on the romance. Michael B. Jordan plays Short and Stack, twin brothers navigating the monsters of 1930s Mississippi. All too human monsters, I should clarify, at least until one fateful night when bloodsuckers come for their souls. The music alone is reason to watch and re-watch Ryan Coogler's opera.

'I Love Boosters' (PVOD)

I'm have an ugly soft spot for early 2000s humor, and this week I finally caved and saw "Scary Movie" (notably NOT officially titled "Scary Movie 6," which fits with its ouroborus ass theme), and thought the entire time: "Man, this is like the direct-to-DVD sequel to I Love Boosters."

Y'all didn't turn up in theaters for this one, and I get that. But if y'all could help it find a new audience on streaming, it'd be mighty appreciated. Because for the absolute gift of another Boots Riley spectacle to flop at a time when "Peacemaker" gets a second season, now that... now that hurts my heart. I haven't stopped thinking about this movie since I watched it. It's everything an 'Eat the Rich' movie should be. Spoiling anything more than that would be doing you a disservice.

Paramount+ is constantly adding new shows to binge, and this weekend is no exception. The streaming service drops new episodes of hit shows every week, and sometimes even entire seasons to binge. In fact, it just added 70 new movies and shows on July 1.

These aren't always new, original shows, though. While Paramount+ adds new shows from Paramount's networks, like CBS, as well as co-productions with international studios, it also brings back older shows, ripe for a binge-watch. It even has some live sporting events, including all major events from the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

This weekend, I've got two shows and one live event worth watching. First, fans of Tyler Perry will want to check out the "Zatima" season 4 finale, which just dropped earlier this week. Once you're done, you can also check out the season 1 finale of "Dutton Ranch," which wrapped up its debut season last week. Then, on Saturday, tune in at 9 p.m. ET for UFC 329: McGregor vs. Holloway, which marks Conor McGregor's first UFC fight since 2021.

'Tyler Perry's Zatima' season 4

Genre: Drama miniseries

What's it about? This comedy drama was originally a spin-off of "Sistas" for BET+, but now, it's on Paramount+. It stars Devale Ellis as Zac and Crystal Renee Hayslett as Fatima, whose names combine for the titular portmanteau, "Zatima." But while they love each other enough for a cute couple nickname, their relationship is constantly under threat from secrets, lies ... and even guns.

Why you should watch it: Look, this show is essentially a soap opera, especially if the season 4 trailer is any indication. But guess what? People love soap operas. So, if you're someone who loves to feel good for a moment before getting dragged into some messy drama, this show could be your next favorite binge.

'Dutton Ranch' season 1

Genre: Neo-Western drama series

What's it about? "Dutton Ranch" stars Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, reprising their roles as Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton from "Yellowstone." In this spin-off/sequel, they're starting over in Texas, hoping to get away from the baggage of Montana. But it turns out there's plenty of new drama in the Lone Star State.

Why you should watch it: "Yellowstone" never really spoke to me, but I've been really enjoying this spin-off. In my "Dutton Ranch" review, I highlighted Ed Harris and Annette Bening as being big reasons I liked it, and so far, they remain the highlights of the show. But the season finale brought in a major twist and a massive new player into the show, and frankly, I'm a bit annoyed I'll have to wait for season 2 to see how it plays out.

UFC 329: MCGregor vs Holloway

Genre: Live sporting event

What's it about? Conor McGregor was the hottest name in the UFC when he beat Max Holloway in 2013. That was McGregor's 10th consecutive win in a 15-win streak. But now, it's Holloway who's arguably the more decorated fighter. He struggles outside of the featherweight division, so this welterweight bout might be the perfect opportunity for McGregor to mount a comeback.

Why you should watch it: Obviously, you can't binge a live sports event. But getting sports such as UFC is a major reason for having Paramount+, and this is undeniably one of the biggest fights of the year. Since it's technically a show, I couldn't leave it off the list this weekend.

Paramount+ is a great streaming service for building your next movie marathon. It adds dozens of movies to the platform each month, and even just added 70 new movies and shows on July 1. This week, I've selected a new movie getting its streaming debut, as well as a few older movies that are absolutely. At the top of the list is "Wardriver," a new crime thriller from last year that's finally arriving on Paramount+. 'Wardriver'

Genre: Crime thriller movie

What's it about? "Wardriver" stars Dane DeHaan as Cole, a hacker. After getting caught up in a cyber heist, he's lured into a deadly game of cat and mouse. If he's not careful, a botched line of code could see him dead.

Why you should watch it: This one is complicated. On the one hand, it got rave reviews from critics. It's currently rated 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. But audiences were far less kind, scoring it just 57% fresh. You'll need to stream it this weekend to see who is right.

'City of God' (2002)

Genre: Brazilian epic crime movie

What's it about: Set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, "City of God" is centered around Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues), a resident of Cidade de Deus (City of God) favela in Rio de Janeiro. He dreams of being a photographer, and when a gang war between drug dealers Li'l Zé (Leandro Firmino) and Carrot (Matheus Nachtergaele) breaks out in the favela, he seizes the opportunity to find a life outside the Brazilian slum.

Why you should watch it: In one of the worst Oscars snubs in recent memory, "City of God" didn't make the shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film, despite earning nominations for Best Director, Best Cinematography and more. Don't make the same mistake; stream this movie now and see for yourself why this should have taken home a golden statuette.

'Glory' (1989)

Genre: Epic war movie

What's it about? "Glory" tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. This was the first all-Black regiment not just in the Civil War, but in the U.S. military. The film features an ensemble performance that includes Matthew Broderick and Cary Elwes as officers, as well as Morgan Freeman, Andre Braugher, and Denzel Washington as some of the former slaves and freedmen fighting in the infantry ranks.

Why you should watch it: "Glory" is nearly four decades old, but still holds up visually against its modern counterparts. Denzel also wins an Oscar for his performance as Trip, who often serves as a devil's advocate-like figure throughout the movie. It's a performance that leads to some emotionally powerful moments, and a movie that's a must-watch.

'Battlestar Galactica'

The 12 human colonies have been nearly wiped out by their own creation, a race of robots called Cylons who wear indistinguishable human faces, leaving a fleet of survivors under the command of grizzled Admiral William Adama (Edward James Olmos) and President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) to find the lost planet of Earth. Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, Tricia Helfer and James Callis anchor an ensemble cast of robots and everyone caught in between. Close to twenty years on, it's still one of the best achievements in sci-fi TV beyond the 2000s.

'Halo'

Paramount+'s live-action adaptation of the popular Xbox franchise finally does what a lot of fans thought was impossible: making a good "Halo" series. Pablo Schreiber stars as Master Chief John-117, the mythic super-soldier at the center of humanity's war with the alien Covenant, forced for the first time to confront the actual person underneath the armor. Whether or not it perfectly matches the games, it works as a legitimately absorbing sci-fi drama on its own terms. And yes, Cortana is there, too.

'Star Trek: The Next Generation'

The show that redefined "Star Trek" for a whole new generation and rewired the DNA of prestige sci-fi TV along the way. Patrick Stewart is Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the diplomatic commander of the starship Enterprise-D, whose voyages keep bringing him and his crew face-to-face with existential threats, moral dilemmas, and the occasional godlike being with a bone to pick. Add in one of the best crews of the entire "Star Trek" series, and you've got some of the most philosophically ambitious hours in the franchise. Seven seasons, four films and one great big legacy -- nothing comes close to this one.

Summer is in full swing now that July 4th has come and gone, and Paramount+ has refreshed its library with a huge wave of new movies and TV shows to make surviving this heat wave indoors easier. Granted, when you're spoiled for choice, narrowing down what to watch next can quickly become a headache.

Granted, a high Rotten Tomatoes score doesn’t guarantee a film will be to your taste, but it is a good sign that the majority of critics responded positively to it. With that in mind, it can be a handy way to cut through a crowded slate of new releases and quickly highlight the titles that deserve a spot on your watchlist.

'Wardriver' (2026)

You may not have heard of "Wardriver" before it landed on Paramount+, but critics are clearly in love with it. This cyber-heist thriller currently boasts a rare 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes (and an admittedly much lower 57% audience score). You'll have to watch to see who got it right.

Dane DeHaan stars as Cole, a low-level hacker who gets roped into a cyberheist with the promise of a million-dollar payday. The plan centers on draining the bank account of an unsuspecting woman with a rich benefactor, but the operation quickly spirals into a tense cat-and-mouse chase with deadly stakes. His growing feelings for her leave him facing consequences far beyond the original gig, and like any typical noir protagonist, he only realizes too late that he's in over his head.

‘Fences' (2016)

In "Fences," Denzel Washington returns to the role that earned him his first Tony while also directing this acclaimed adaptation of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. He stars as Troy Maxson, a disillusioned sanitation worker living in 1950s Pittsburgh with a chip on his shoulder that backwards, bigoted laws kept him from becoming a pro baseball player in the then-segregated major leagues.

That lingering frustration spills over into his relationship with his wife, Rose, played by Viola Davis in an Oscar-winning performance. The cracks in their marriage widen further when Troy's son (Jovan Adepo) gets the chance to go after the opportunity Troy never had.

‘Good Morning, Vietnam' (1987)

Robin Williams earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance in "Good Morning, Vietnam," and it's easy to see why. He stars as military radio DJ Adrian Cronauer, an airman stationed in Saigon in 1965 whose irreverent, rapid-fire jokes make him a favorite among U.S. troops and a thorn in leadership's side.

While it's undeniably a comedy, "Good Morning, Vietnam" never loses sight of the realities of war. Alongside the humor, there's plenty of violence and heartbreak as Cronauer's attempts to befriend the local Vietnamese people force him to confront the complicated dynamics inherent to an occupying military presence that no amount of good intentions can overwrite.

"The Autopsy of Jane Doe" is a far more cerebral film than it initially lets on, twisting familiar genre beats into a uniquely unsettling experience. What is 'The Autopsy of Jane Doe' about?

Tommy Tilden (Brian Cox) and his son Austin (Emile Hirsch) run a small-town morgue and crematorium nestled in a quiet basement. Their routine is shattered when the sheriff delivers an unidentified woman found at the scene of a grisly multiple homicide. With no visible cause of death and no identity, she becomes the titular Jane Doe.

As the autopsy begins, things get incredibly strange. Jane’s body is mysteriously pristine on the outside, yet internally, she has sustained a series of horrifying, contradictory injuries. It quickly becomes clear that she is no ordinary corpse, leaving the Tildens to wonder what exactly happened to this woman to cause such internal devastation without marking her skin.

Worse yet, messing with Jane Doe clearly has consequences. Strange occurrences begin to plague the morgue — the radio blares on its own, the lights fail, and the atmospheric tension ratchets up. Tommy and Austin are left to grapple with an impossible dilemma: is there a scientific explanation for these anomalies, or are they dealing with something truly supernatural?

Why I recommend streaming 'The Autopsy of Jane Doe'

Many horror movies start with a strong hook only to fall apart during the final act. "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" avoids this pitfall by remaining tight, focused, and unsettling from beginning to end. By keeping the cast small and the setting contained, the film forces the audience to focus entirely on the central anomaly: Jane herself.

Instead of relying on constant gore or cheap jump scares, the film leans heavily into its mystery. Much like the coroners, the viewer becomes obsessed with the "how" and "why" of the internal damage, allowing the eventual twist to land with maximum impact. It treats the autopsy like a detective procedural, making the shift into horror feel earned rather than forced.

Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch provide the emotional grounding necessary to sell the high-concept premise. Their believable father-son dynamic turns the film into more than just a supernatural puzzle box; it makes the stakes feel deeply personal. When the final payoff arrives, it is backed by a sense of dread that culminates in an ending you won't see coming.

'The Agency' season 2

Genre: Spy thriller series

What's it about? "The Agency” is an adaptation of the acclaimed French spy thriller series "Le Bureau des Légendes" (or "The Bureau"). It's set at the CIA's London office and stars Michael Fassbender as a deep-cover agent named Brandon, though he mostly goes by his codename: "Martian." His cover and his work life are dangerously intertwined, and in season 2, he will betray the CIA to save the woman he loves (Jodie Turner-Smith).

Why you should watch it: I've already seen the entire season, and in my "The Agency" season 2 review, I landed firmly in the camp of loving this show once again. It's not a perfect show, and most of the problems from season 1 are still there in season 2. But this show knows how to build to an explosive finale, and I don't mean that metaphorically.

'Tyler Perry's Ruthless' season 6

Genre: Drama miniseries

What's it about? This spin-off of "The Oval" stars Melissa L. Williams as Ruth, who has become entangled in a powerful sex cult. Six seasons in, she's now pregnant with the child of The Highest (Matt Cedeño), who leads the cult, and that's finally given her an opportunity to wield power within it.

Why you should watch it: I'll be honest, this show sounds absolutely insane. But people love Tyler Perry's shows, so it felt wrong not to mention that one of his series had just returned for a sixth season. Clearly, something is working with this series.

This week, I've selected a couple of classics alongside a more modern hit. At the top of the list is "Everybody Wants Some!!," and while it's the newest movie on this list, it feels like a classic. Then, there's "Good Morning, Vietnam," which might be my favorite Robin Williams performance of any movie he's been in. Finally, I'm going with "Marathon Man," a Dustin Hoffman thriller that nearly broke the actor thanks to a scene where he has to stay awake for three days.

'Everybody Wants Some!!' (2016)

Genre: Comedy movie

What's it about? "Everybody Wants Some!!" stars an incredible ensemble cast that includes Blake Jenner, Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Ryan Guzman, Tyler Hoechlin, Will Brittain and Wyatt Russell. Arguably a spiritual sequel to "Dazed and Confused," it follows the lives of several college baseball players in Texas in 1980.

Why you should watch it: If "Dazed and Confused" and its 1970s setting are too dated for you, "Everybody Wants Some!!" is a (slightly) more modern take on the coming-of-age tale. It's also an excellent period piece, something that Linklater has nailed more than once in his career.

'Good Morning, Vietnam' (1987)

Genre: War comedy-drama movie

What's it about? "Good Morning, Vietnam" is not your typical Vietnam War movie. Set in Saigon in 1965, it stars Robin Williams as a military radio DJ named Adrian Cronauer (loosely based on real-life events) whose irreverent broadcasts are popular with the troops. He's aided by PFC Edward Garlick (Forest Whitaker) in his endeavours, which don't always jive with what his superiors would like.

Why you should watch it: This war movie may be undeniably funny, but it's still a war movie. And that means plenty of drama and violence. As a decent person, Cronauer tries to connect with the local Vietnamese, but doesn't always take into account that they might not want to connect with him, and with good reason.

'Marathon Man' (1976)

Genre: Suspense thriller movie

What's it about? "Marathon Man" stars Dustin Hoffman as "Babe" Lev. He's a graduate student and distance runner at Columbia University, but his life becomes forever changed when his brother (Roy Schieder) unwittingly gets Babe involved in a plot by Nazi war criminal Christian Szell (Laurence Olivier) to retrieve ill-gotten diamonds from a safe deposit box.

Why you should watch it: This is genuinely a great movie. It was nominated for multiple Oscars, including one for Hoffman's performance. But my favorite thing about this movie is that, to prepare for a scene, Hoffman stayed up for three days with no sleep. When his co-star, Olivier, learned about this, he said, "My dear boy, why don't you just try acting?" The intent of this comment was a joke, according to Hoffman, but it's a legendary moment, regardless.

In fact, there might be so many choices that it overwhelms you. Don't worry, though, I've already looked through everything coming to Paramount+ in July, and I know exactly which of these movies and shows are a must-watch.

Top of the list is "City of God," an Oscar-worthy Brazilian film that's now over 20 years old but no less incredible. Then, you'll want to check out Richard Linklater's "Everybody Wants Some!!" Finally, I'm rounding out the list with a trio of war films: "Glory," "Good Morning, Vietnam" and "Hacksaw Ridge."

So, without further delay, let's dive into the five newly added to Paramount+ movies and shows that I think you need to be streaming right now.

5 Paramount+ movies and shows to stream right now

'City of God' (2002)

Genre: Brazilian epic crime movie

What's it about: Set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, "City of God" is narrated by Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues), a resident of Rio's Cidade de Deus (City of God) favela who dreams of being a photographer. So when a gang war between drug dealers Li'l Zé (Leandro Firmino) and Carrot (Matheus Nachtergaele) breaks out in the favela, Rocket seizes the opportunity to find a life outside the Brazilian slum.

Why you should watch it: It's insane that, despite earning nominations for Best Director, Best Cinematography and more, "City of God" somehow didn't make the shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film. Don't let that dissuade you from watching it; this is an excellent movie.

'Everybody Wants Some!!' (2016)

Genre: Comedy movie

What's it about? Starring an incredible ensemble cast that includes Blake Jenner, Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Ryan Guzman, Tyler Hoechlin, Will Brittain, and Wyatt Russell, this spiritual successor to "Dazed and Confused" follows the lives of several college baseball players in Texas in 1980.

Why you should watch it: If "Dazed and Confused" is too dated for you, "Everybody Wants Some!!" is a (slightly) more modern take on the coming-of-age tale, as well as an excellent period piece, something that Linklater has nailed more than once in his career.

'Glory' (1989)

Genre: Epic war movie

What's it about? "Glory" tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the first all-Black regiment in the U.S. military. It's an ensemble performance that features Matthew Broderick and Cary Elwes as officers, as well as Morgan Freeman, Andre Braugher, and Denzel Washington as some of the former slaves and freedmen fighting in the infantry ranks.

Why you should watch it: "Glory" is nearly four decades old, but still holds up visually against its modern counterparts. Denzel also wins an Oscar for his performance as Trip, who often serves as a devil's advocate-like figure throughout the movie. It's a performance that leads to some emotionally powerful moments, and a movie that's a must-watch.

'Good Morning, Vietnam' (1987)

Genre: War comedy-drama movie

What's it about? This is not your typical Vietnam War movie. 'Hacksaw Ridge' (2016)

Genre: Biographical epic war movie

What's it about? Based on the 2004 documentary The Conscientious Objector," this movie stars Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss. As a Seventh-day Adventist, Doss refused to wield a weapon during World War II, opting instead to serve as a combat medic.

Why you should watch it: Say what you will about Mel Gibson as a person, but he can certainly direct a movie. So I have to recommend still checking this movie out for artistic reasons. It's also worth seeing the portrayal of Doss's incredible story, which sees him become the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

There is a total of $250,000 in scholarship funding on offer to winners, with the top winner receiving a huge $150,000 grand prize. $25,000 is on offer to other notable participants.

July is all about vacations, backyard barbecues and squeezing every last drop out of summer. If you're spending more time outside than planted on the couch, now's also a good time to trim a few recurring expenses — starting with the streaming services you're barely opening.

According to Lending Tree, the average American spends about $84 a month on some combination of the best streaming services. With streaming costs continuing to creep upward, keeping every platform year-round is harder to justify. Rotating your subscriptions based on what's actually worth watching remains the smartest way to save money without feeling like you're missing out.

For July 2026, the easiest services to put on pause are Prime Video, Disney+ and Hulu. Each has a few notable additions, but not enough to make a compelling case for sticking around all month. Here's why these three streamers are the ones to cancel for now.

Why I'd cancel Prime Video

Prime Video is a bit of an oddball on this list because, for most people, it comes bundled with an Amazon Prime membership rather than as a standalone subscription. If you actually pay for it separately, though, July is a good month to cancel Prime Video.

The service still has a deep catalog, but new releases are what keep a streaming subscription feeling worthwhile, and July 2026's Prime Video lineup feels rather lackluster. There are a couple of decent additions, but nothing that feels like the kind of must-watch TV or movie that demands you keep paying for another month.

The most noteworthy title is "Elle," a prequel series to the "Legally Blonde" movies that premieres July 1. It follows teen Elle Woods (Lexi Minetree), years before she conquered Harvard Law School. After her family relocates from Bel-Air to Seattle, a pink-clad Elle finds herself starting over ... in 1995, during peak grunge era.

Another big release on July 15 is "Ride or Die," an action comedy series starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham as friends who have to go on the run from a mysterious enemy — but it turns out, one of them is a trained assassin!

Last thing of note, the animated series "Batman: Caped Crusader" returns for season 2 on July 31. But that's literally the last day of the month, so it barely counts.

All in all, there's nothing here that really lands with that “drop everything and watch this tonight” energy. In all three of these cases, you can cancel now, wait a few weeks, cancel now, and just jump back in down the road when there are buzzier titles to view.

Why I'd cancel Disney+ and Hulu

Disney+ and Hulu are bundled for many subscribers, which does create savings, but also has a way of hiding just how much you're paying for and how much you're actually using both.

While Disney+ is a go-to for families, July is one of those rare stretches when it's less necessary when you factor in outdoor time, camps, and vacations. Hulu feels less essential during this time, as well, with ABC's season over. The services themselves seem to know it, as the Disney+ and Hulu July 2026 calendar is pretty bare.

The only Disney+ originals of note are "X-Men '97" season 2 on July 1 and "Descendants: Wicked Wonderland," the fifth in the Disney Channel's musical fantasy film franchise," on July 17.

As for Hulu, it's got several interesting releases on deck, like the boxing drama film "They Fight" on July 17, the crime thriller series "Furious" on July 27, Lollapalooz live streams starting July 30, and the twentysomething comedy "Adults" on July 31.

Note how most of those dates are later in the month. If you cancel Hulu alongside Disney+, you'd barely have to wait at all to binge them, while still saving at least a month's subscription.

How much you'll save by canceling Prime Video, Disney+ and Hulu

Canceling Prime Video, Disney+ and Hulu this month can save you more than you’d expect, especially in a season when you’re likely not using them all that much anyway.

Disney+ and Hulu’s bundled plan runs $12.99/month with ads, or $19.99/month for the ad-free tier. Separately, Disney+ with ads and Hulu with ads are $11.99/month; without ads, each is $18.99/month. Prime Video comes in at $8.99/month for the ad-supported standalone version, while the ad-free option is $13.98/month. And for most subscribers, it’s worth remembering that Amazon Prime itself costs $14.99/month and comes with ad-supported Prime Video.

Taken together, stepping away from these services for a month can realistically put roughly $18 to $30+ back in your pocket, depending on how you subscribe. It doesn’t sound like a life-changing amount on its own, but these small monthly charges quietly stack up in the background. At a time when everyday costs are already high, saving a little now can leave room for bigger expenses coming later in the year.

The new month is nearly here, and Paramount+ is adding a ton of new movies, shows and live sports to watch this July. Whether you are looking for a new binge watch or your next movie marathon, there's plenty to check out this month and more than a few things worth adding to your watchlist.

Top of the list is "Dutton Ranch." This new "Yellowstone" spin-off has been a surprisingly enjoyable show through its first several episodes, and on July 3, the season 1 finale arrives on Paramount+. Then, a few days later, the crime thriller movie "Wardriver" makes its streaming debut, and given the positive reviews it received in its theatrical release, you won't want to miss it. Nor will you want to miss "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 4, which premieres on the streaming service toward the end of the month.

‘Dutton Ranch’ season 1 finale

Genre: Neo-Western drama series

What's it about? "Dutton Ranch" has been addictive to watch in its debut season. The "Yellowstone" spin-off brings back Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly as Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton, but this time, they're starting over in Texas. They're hoping to get away from the baggage of Montana, but don't worry, there's plenty of new drama in the Lone Star State.

Why you should watch it: "Yellowstone" never really spoke to me, but I've been enjoying this spin-off. In my "Dutton Ranch" review, I highlighted Ed Harris and Annette Bening as being big reasons I liked it, and so far, they remain the highlights of the show. If it's any sort of ringing endorsement, I've been watching every week even though I no longer need to.

'Wardriver'

Genre: Crime thriller movie

What's it about? "Wardriver" stars Dane DeHaan as Cole, a hacker. He's lured into a deadly game of cat and mouse after getting caught up in a cyber heist, and if he's not careful, a wrong line of code could see him dead.

Why you should watch it: This one is complicated. On the one hand, it got rave reviews from critics. It's currently 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. But audiences were far less kinda, rating it just 57%. You'll have to watch to see who is right.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 4 premiere

Genre: Science fiction series

What's it about? "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, captain of the USS Enterprise. He's joined by familiar names Spock (Ethan Peck), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn) and several others that have appeared in previous "Star Trek" movies and shows.

Why you should watch it: Season 4 will cover the fourth year of the Enterprise's five-year mission, and it's been a largely well-received show through its first three seasons. Season 3 was less well-received than the previous two, but with just seasons 4 and 5 to go, this is the perfect time for you to start watching.

Paramount+ is constantly adding new shows to binge, and this weekend is no exception. The streaming service drops new episodes of hit shows every week, and sometimes even entire seasons to binge. In fact, it added 93 new movies and shows on June 1 alone. These aren't always new, original shows, though. While Paramount+ adds new shows from Paramount's networks, like CBS, as well as coproductions with international studios, it also brings back older shows, ripe for a binge-watch.

This weekend, I've got three shows worth watching. First, there's "Wild Cherry," a British thriller miniseries that already debuted in the U.K. but just made its streaming debut on Paramount+ this week. Then, there's "Dutton Ranch," which only has one episode left after this weekend. Finally, "The Agency" season 2 is now available to binge in its entirety, as Paramount opted for a 10-episode drop rather than a weekly release schedule this time around.

'Wild Cherry'

Genre: British thriller miniseries

What's it about? Wild Cherry centers around a self-made businesswoman, Lorna (Carmen Ejogo), and her best friend, Juliet (Eve Best). The latter was born into a world of wealth and good fortune, but now they both live in an enclave with their daughters. Their lives are rocked, though, when their daughters are suddenly implicated in a scandal and toxic secrets start to tear through the small, elite community.

Why you should watch it: Despite already premiering in the U.K., there aren't too many reviews for this limited series on Rotten Tomatoes. That said, the few that exist are good, and the Brits know how to nail a six-episode miniseries. I fully expect this show to be well worth watching.

'Dutton Ranch' season 1

'The Agency' season 2

Genre: Spy thriller series

What's it about? "The Agency” is adapted from the acclaimed French spy thriller series "Le Bureau des Légendes" (or "The Bureau"). It's set at the CIA's London office and stars Michael Fassbender as a deep-cover agent named Brandon, though he mostly goes by his codename: "Martian." His cover and his work life are dangerously intertwined, and in season 2, he will betray the CIA to save the woman he loves (Jodie Turner-Smith).

Why you should watch it: I've seen all 10 episodes, and in my "The Agency" season 2 review, I landed firmly in the camp of loving this show once again. It's not a perfect show; most of the problems from season 1 are still there in season 2. But this show knows how to build to an explosive finale, and I don't mean that simply as a metaphor.

Paramount+ is a great streaming service for building your next movie marathon. It adds dozens of movies to the platform each month; it added 93 new movies and shows in June alone. Many of these are beloved classics or more modern hits, but a few times a month, you even get brand-new movies from Paramount Skydance studios.

This week, I'm sticking with some more modern masterpieces. At the top of my list is "The Big Short," which is a movie I rewatch more than most others. Then, there's "The Manchurian Candidate," a 2004 remake of the 1962 political thriller classic, starring Denzel Washington. Finally, I'm keeping things in the thriller genre with "Witness," an incredible crime thriller starring Harrison Ford.

'The Big Short' (2015)

Genre: Biographical comedy-drama

What's it about? Set around unpacking the causes of the 2008 financial crisis, "The Big Short" centers on three main groups, starting with Dr. Michael Burry (Christian Bale), who is first among the trio to short the housing market. Through Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), this news makes it to Mark Baum (Steve Carell) and his team, who then also start to short the mortgage sector. Finally, there's a duo of young investment bankers mentored by Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt), who also learn of the shorts and decide to join the fray. They all walk away rich while the U.S. economy collapses.

Why you should watch it: "The Big Short" is basically three incredible ensemble performances rolled into a single movie, and I love rewatching it, especially when I'm having writer's block. You probably won't watch it for that reason, but you definitely should still watch it.

'The Manchurian Candidate' (2004)

Genre: Neo-noir political thriller

What's it about? "The Manchurian Candidate" stars Denzel Washington as Maj. Bennett Marco. He commanded a unit in the Persian Gulf War that included Sgt. First Class Raymond Shaw (Liev Schreiber) and both of them were captured during a mission, but later escaped. Since the war, Shaw has gone on to become a member of Congress and is now on track to be the next Vice President of the U.S., but Marco starts to uncover a conspiracy regarding their time in Kuwait that could put Shaw's candidacy in jeopardy.

Why you should watch it: While the 1962 original is probably the better movie, this 2004 remake is still worth checking out. Besides Denzel and Schreiber, the cast list also includes Meryl Streep, Jon Voight, Jeffrey Wright and a few other familiar faces. It's worth watching for some of their performances alone.

'Witness' (1985)

Genre: Neo-noir crime thriller

What's it about? "Witness" stars Harrison Ford as Det. Cpt. John Book, a member of the Philadelphia Police Department. He's been tasked with protecting Samuel, a young Amish boy who witnessed the murder of an undercover cop, and it turns out the perpetrator is another officer. To keep him safe, Harrison returns with Samuel to Amish country, and the members of the community are less than thrilled to have an outsider among them.

Why you should watch it: This crime thriller was a hit with critics and at the box office. It scored eight Oscar nominations, including one for Ford's performance. It's a must-watch now that you can stream it on Paramount+.

From a purely bingeing standpoint, few television formats are as satisfying as the miniseries. Self-contained and tightly crafted, they're fully realized stories that don't require the heavy plot loads or time commitments of traditional TV shows. That means you can get through an entire series in a single weekend, especially when the episodes are moving along at an engrossing clip.

As one of the top streaming services around, Paramount Plus has a strong lineup of limited series that are perfect for a quick binge, many of which you've no doubt heard of before, from the historical romance "Fellow Travelers" to the movie-industry drama "The Offer" to the "Yellowstone" prequel "1883." But there are plenty of other miniseries on the platform that, though lesser known, are no less worthy of a watch.

Whether you’re in the mood for a post-apocalyptic survival drama courtesy Stephen King or a South Korean sci-fi tale from Lee Joon-ik, here are three top-notch miniseries streaming on Paramount+ that you might not have heard of but should check out ASAP.

'The Stand'

An adaptation of Stephen King's 1978 dark-fantasy epic, "The Stand" revolves around a devastating man-made plague that accidentally escapes a military facility and wipes out the majority of humankind. The few survivors left — including James Marsden's Stu Redman, Odessa Young’s Frannie Goldsmith and Jovan Adepo’s Larry Underwood, among others — gather in Boulder, Colorado, guided by the visions of 108-year-old prophet, Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg).

However, their vulnerable existence is by a much darker contingent of survivors based out of Las Vegas and led by Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård), a supernatural "Dark Man" with demonic powers whose totalitarian rule includes widespread fear and public executions. It all comes together with a brand-new coda written specially by King himself for the nine-part miniseries, diverging from the source material.

'Yonder'

Set in the not-too-distant future — 2032 South Korea, to be exact — this six-part sci-fi drama centers on grieving widower Kim Jae-hyun (Shin Ha-kyun), who receives an invitation from his late wife Cha Yi-hoo (Han Ji-min) to Yonder, a virtual world created based on her uploaded memories. Still deeply grieving the loss, Ja-hyun accepts the invite to this mysterious afterlife and is reunited with his beloved spouse, who had lost her life to cancer. However, soon he is struck by an existential crisis of memory and mortality.

Based on the novel “Goodbye, Yonder” by Kim Jang-hwan, the Lee Joon-ik-directed drama is a thought-provoking watch, with beautiful cinematography and plenty of emotional depth. Joel Keller of Decider wrote of the series: “Yonder moves a bit slowly, but its episodes are short and its exploration of the ‘uncanny valley’ theory of AI is worth watching for the series’ relatively brief runtime.”

'Knuckles'

Set within the “Sonic the Hedgehog” cinematic universe, this live-action spinoff series focuses on the titular Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), a former rival-turned-steadfast friend of the famous blue-haired erinaceid. While struggling to adjust to life in Green Hills, Knuckles decides to take on a dim-witted, middle-aged human as an apprentice — that would be Deputy Sheriff Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) — and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior to help Wade prepare for a high-stakes bowling in Reno, Nevada.

Paramount+ always has plenty of new shows to binge, and this weekend is no exception. The streaming service adds new episodes of hit shows every week, and sometimes drops entire seasons to binge. This weekend, I've got three shows worth watching. First, there's "The Agency," which is returning for season 2, but this time as a 10-episode binge-drop instead of a weekly release. If you want something to watch next week as well, "Dutton Ranch" is a new spinoff sequel to "Yellowstone," and it's already deep into its first season. Finally, there's Lena Waithe's hit series "The Chi," which is currently in the midst of its eighth and final season.

'The Agency' season 2

Genre: Spy thriller series

What's it about? "The Agency” is adapted from the acclaimed French spy thriller series "Le Bureau des Légendes" (or "The Bureau"). It's set at the CIA's London office and stars Michael Fassbender as a deep-cover agent named Brandon, though he mostly goes by his codename: "Martian." His cover and his work life are dangerously intertwined, and in season 2, he will betray the CIA to save the woman he loves (Jodie Turner-Smith).

Why you should watch it: I've seen all 10 episodes of "The Agency" season 2, and I loved it. It's not a perfect show; most of the problems from season 1 are still there in season 2. But this show knows how to build to an explosive finale, and I don't mean that simply as a metaphor.

'Dutton Ranch' season 1

Genre: Neo-Western drama series

What's it about? "Dutton Ranch" brings back Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly in a "Yellowstone" spinoff that's addictive to watch. They're reprising their roles as Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton from the original show, but this time, they're starting over in Texas. They're hoping to get away from the baggage of Montana, but there's still plenty of new drama in the Lone Star State.

Why you should watch it: "Yellowstone" never really spoke to me, but I've been enjoying this spin-off. In my "Dutton Ranch" review, I highlighted Ed Harris and Annette Bening as being big reasons I liked it, and so far, they remain the highlights of the show.

'The Chi' season 8

Genre: Drama series

What's it about? "The Chi" is arguably to Chicago what "The Wire" is to Baltimore, at least in terms of how it explores life in the city. Created by Lena Waithe, it centers around a large ensemble cast in the Southside of Chicago. In this final season, a murder has rocked some of our cast, while others are struggling with everything from the prison system to the trials and tribulations of parenting.

Why you should watch it: If you need a series to binge, "The Chi" has you covered with 82 episodes to date, and an 83rd coming on Sunday. Not all seasons are created equal, but more than a few are genuinely great. The one catch is that, unlike "The Agency, this former Showtime series still requires Paramount+ Premium to watch it.

Finally, I'm ending things on a high note with "21 Jump Street," a buddy cop movie guaranteed to make you laugh.

'Taken' (2008)

Genre: Action thriller

What's it about? In this career-redefining movie, Liam Neeson plays Bryan. He's a retired intelligence officer with a military background, and he's finally trying to live a normal life. That goes out the window when his 17-year-old daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), is taken on vacation in Paris. Bryan's training immediately kicks in, and he uses a very particular set of skills to eliminate the people who took her.

Why you should watch it: "Taken" has spawned several old-man-turned-action-star films since it came out in 2008. Still, with the possible exception of "John Wick," this film remains the best of the genre. Even if you've seen it, you should make the time to see it again.

'Hard Eight' (1996)

Genre: Crime drama

What's it about? John C. Reilly stars in "Hard Eight" as John Finnegan. A degenerate gambler, he becomes homeless after a bad run in Vegas. His life changes, though, when he meets Sydney (Philip Baker Hall), an older gambler who gets him a coffee and a cigarette, and then takes John under his wing.

Why you should watch it: If you're someone who loves to see how acclaimed directors get their start, the directorial debut of Paul Thomas Anderson is a must-watch. The cast is excellent, too. Aside from Reilly and Hall, "Hard Eight" also stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel L. Jackson.

'21 Jump Street' (2012)

Genre: Buddy cop action comedy

What's it about? Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) are former high school classmates who suddenly find themselves coworkers in "21 Jump Street." They're not working just any job, though: they're undercover cops sent back to high school to bring down a drug ring.

Why you should watch it: One of the best bits of this movie is that Hill and Tatum both look way too old for high school. But that's far from the only thing that will make you laugh in this comedy flick. Even the trailer will have you in stitches.

"The Agency" is back for season 2, and if you liked the first season, you'll like this one too. If for some reason you didn't like last season, well ... you won't suddenly find yourself liking this one. But provided you couldn't get enough of Paramount+'s spy thriller back in 2024, you're going to struggle not to binge-watch season 2 in an entire sitting.

Yes, "The Agency" is getting a binge-drop release schedule this time around. All 10 episodes arriving at exactly 3 a.m. ET on June 21. It's a deviation from the first season, when episodes were on Showtime with Paramount+ and were released weekly. But having seen the entire season myself, I'm actually not complaining. This show is insanely addictive, and once it starts, it becomes a non-stop chess match between spymasters, mercenaries and hostile governments that leaves plenty of bodies in its wake.

The show is well written, which maybe isn't a surprise given it's an adaptation of the acclaimed French series "The Bureau." But it's not the highlight of the show. Nor is the action, of which there is plenty. Once again, the highlight of season 2 is the same as season 1: its cast, led by Michael Fassbender.

Michael Fassbender leads everyone on a wild goose chase that leaves bodies in his wake

In season 1, "The Agency" set up an ensemble cast that included Richard Gere as James Bradley, aka "Bosko," the CIA London Station Chief. His right-hand man was Henry Ogletree, played by another acclaimed actor, Jeffrey Wright. Henry then had two deputies: Naomi, played by the talented Katherine Waterston, and a former deep-cover operative named Brandon, codenamed "Martian," played by two-time Academy Award nominee Fassbender.

As the core of London Station, they operated primarily in two arenas: The Ukraine War and Iran. These storylines remained largely disparate, with the Ukrainian front seemingly wrapping up in the epic season finale, and the Iranian storyline unresolved.

In season 2, we quickly learn that loose ends in Ukraine aren't neatly tied up. The mercenary group, Valhalla (based loosely on the Wagner Group), may have lost its leader in Ukraine, but now a new leader has arisen in the Central African Republic. His name is Viking (Clayne Crawford), and he's a former U.S. Marine who's a chess grandmaster and executes people with a sledgehammer in publicly released videos.

Martian is trying to bring him down, but he's got problems at home; specifically, he betrayed the U.S. government to free his Sudanese girlfriend (Jodie Turner-Smith) from captivity. He did this by turning double agent for Richardson (Hugh Bonneville), a senior MI6 official hoping to use his new asset to rise up the ranks.

It's through that storyline that the Valhalla and Iran storylines finally come together, but I won't spoil exactly how that happens, as it's a key turning point in the season. But their coming together does fix one of the weakest points of the first season: the storylines were simply too disconnected.

That said, this season isn't flawless. While everything is more connected than before, I still find myself simply not caring about anything other than what's going on in Martian's life. Viking is a compelling villain, but I feel like the brief moments we get with him aren't enough. And Jodie Turner-Smith, while still important to this season, is frankly underutilized.

Still, by the end of the season, you probably won't care. Because "The Agency" knew to end things on a high note in season 1, and it didn't forget that lesson in season 2.

Verdict: The burn on 'The Agency' season 2 can be slow, but the explosive ending is worth the wait

When you read this, the first episode of season 2 won't even have arrived on Paramount's streaming service. So I'm certainly not going to spoil the ending here when you haven't even had a chance to watch.

But trust me when I say that if the season 1 finale left you stunned, as it did me, then season 2's finale will have you equally shocked. It's not quite as good as the first season's ending was, but it will have you just as much on the edge of your seat as the endgame approaches and all the movie pieces come together in an epic clash. Check it out this Sunday on Paramount+, then get ready for Paramount to (hopefully) announce that season 3 is coming soon.

What's it about: "Clerks" stars Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson as Dante and Randal, a pair of convenience store clerks at a New Jersey Quick Stop. The movie follows their mundane lives as they try to make it through a day's shift, and as you'll see, they don't manage to fully succeed.

Why you should watch it: Kevin Smith's debut movie is still an incredible achievement in independent filmmaking, even though there's nothing technically masterful about it. The plot is great, and the movie is hysterically funny at times. Plus, it's the first appearance of Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith). Don't believe this is a must-watch? Just check out this scene arguing the ethics of being a contractor on the Death Star in "Star Wars."

'True Grit' (2010)

Genre: Western movie

What's it about? An adaptation of the 1969 John Wayne classic, "True Grit" stars Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn. He's a drunkard lawman hired by 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) to hunt down the outlaw Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), who murdered her father. Joining them on the journey is Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who is also hunting Chaney and doesn't have a friendly history with Cogburn.

Why you should watch it: The 2010 version of "True Grit" might be the most mainstream film the Coens have ever made. But while it lacks some of their trademark quirkiness, it still features their witty dialogue and impressive cinematography. It's definitely a must-watch now that it's on Paramount+.

'Scream 7' (2026)

Genre: Slasher horror movie

What's it about? "Scream 7" has Neve Campbell returning to the world of slasher horror, reprising her role as Sidney Prescott. She's trying to live a peaceful life in Indiana and just wants to leave Ghostface in the past. But that hope turns to ash when the killer reveals himself to her and targets her daughter, Tatum (Isabel May). So Sidney teams up with her old frenemy, Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox), to take Ghostface down.

Why you should watch it: Critics were not fans of "Scream 7", at least according to Rotten Tomatoes. That said, audiences found it far more enjoyable, so it's still worth a watch for "Scream" completionists or horror movie buffs.

Paramount+ has plenty of new shows to binge this weekend. The streaming service is always adding new episodes of hit shows and even entire seasons to binge. This weekend, I've got three shows worth watching for hours on end. First, there's Lena Waithe's hit series "The Chi," which is currently in the midst of its eighth and final season. But while it's wrapping up, a pair of shows are just starting. "Dutton Ranch" is a new spinoff sequel to "Yellowstone," and it's already become Paramount's biggest streaming hit this year. Finally, an animated take on the hit video game "Among Us" just dropped its entire first season, and it's got a surprisingly loaded voice cast.

'The Chi' season 8

Genre: Drama series

What's it about? "The Chi" is arguably Chicago's answer to "The Wire." Created by Lena Waithe, it centers around a large ensemble cast as they live life in the Southside of Chicago. In this final season, a murder has rocked some of our cast, while others are struggling with everything from the prison system to the trials and tribulations of parenting.

Why you should watch it: If you need a series to binge, "The Chi" has you covered with 81 episodes to date, and an 82nd coming on Sunday. Not all seasons are created equal, but more than a few are genuinely great. The one catch is that this used to be a Showtime series, so you'll need Paramount+ Premium to watch it.

'Dutton Ranch' season 1

Genre: Neo-Western drama series

What's it about? Forget "Marshals"; this is the "Yellowstone" spinoff to watch. "Dutton Ranch" brings back Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly to the Sheridanverse, reprising their roles as Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton. This time, they're starting over in Texas, away from the baggage of the original series. Don't worry, though, there's still plenty of new drama.

Why you should watch it: "Yellowstone" never really spoke to me, but I've been enjoying the first few episodes of this show. In my "Dutton Ranch" review, I highlighted Ed Harris and Annette Bening as being big reasons I liked it, and after you watch, you'll see why.

'Among Us'

Genre: Animated sci-fi comedy series

What's it about? Based on the hit video game of the same name, "Among Us" follows a crew aboard a spaceship where murder is afoot. An alien shapeshifter has infiltrated and started causing chaos, and now, the crew has to out the imposter before they're all dead.

Why you should watch it: I'm not sure this needed to be a show, but I can see the murder mystery format working well. Plus, the cast for this show is worth watching. Yvette Nicole Brown, Randall Park, Dan Stevens, Wayne Knight, Elijah Wood and Patton Oswalt are joined by voice acting icons Ashley Johnson, Phil LaMarr and Debra Wilson for a loaded voice cast for this bingable animated series.

‘Selma’ (2015)

“Selma” is a historical drama directed by Ava DuVernay that follows a key moment in the American civil rights movement. The film focuses on the planning and impact of the Selma-to-Montgomery marches, building a tense and grounded look at the political and social struggle behind them. It was widely praised by critics and earned several major award nominations, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and a history-making Golden Globe nomination for DuVernay, who became the first Black woman ever nominated for Best Director.

Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) led a coordinated campaign in 1965 to challenge restrictive voting practices in Selma, Alabama. After mounting pressure and increasing resistance from local authorities, King and fellow activists organize a series of marches aimed at reaching the state capital of Montgomery. The movement draws national attention, placing intense focus on political negotiations between civil rights leaders and President Lyndon B. Johnson (Tom Wilkinson).

‘Shane’ (1953)

If you enjoy classic movies, you’ll want to stream “Shane” next. It’s one of the greatest and most influential Westerns in cinema history, and it helped reshape how the American frontier was portrayed on screen. The film’s defining narrative device is its unique point of view. Rather than framing the frontier through the cynical eyes of seasoned cowboys, the entire film is experienced through the pure, impressionable perspective of a nine-year-old boy named Joey.

“Shane” follows a quiet drifter named Shane (Alan Ladd) who arrives in a Wyoming valley and takes work with a homesteading family led by Joe Starrett (Van Heflin). The family is caught in a land dispute with a powerful cattle baron, Rufus Ryker (Emile Meyer), who is trying to force settlers off their property. Shane soon becomes closely tied to the family, especially young Joey (Brandon De Wilde), who idolises him. When Ryker brings in a feared gunman to escalate the conflict, Shane is pulled back into the skills he has tried to leave behind.

‘True Grit’ (2010)

While many initially assumed “True Grit” was a remake of the 1969 John Wayne film, the Coen brothers actually rejected it as a reference point altogether. Instead, they went back to Charles Portis’s 1968 novel, delivering a far more faithful (and far sharper) adaptation that views the frontier through a harsher, more grounded lens. The result was an absolute juggernaut, grossing $252.3 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of the Coen brothers’ career.

14-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) travels to Fort Smith after her father is murdered by a man named Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). Determined to track him down, she hires U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), a rough, heavy-drinking lawman known for getting results. Despite initial reluctance, Cogburn agrees to help, and the two set out into dangerous territory to find Chaney. Along the way, they are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who has been pursuing the same man for a separate crime.

‘Pride’ (2014)

A perfect watch for Pride Month is the 2014 comedy-drama “Pride,” which is a moving, beautifully acted, and genuinely joyful film about community, dignity, and unexpected friendships. It’s directed by Matthew Warchus and inspired by true events surrounding the 1984 U.K. miners’ strike and the formation of the LGBT support group “Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners” (LGSM). The film brings together a strong ensemble cast, including Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Andrew Scott, and George MacKay.

“Pride” centers around a group of London-based gay and lesbian activists who decide to raise money for families affected by the 1984 miners’ strike in Wales. After collecting donations during Pride events, they struggle to find a union willing to accept their support, eventually traveling by minibus to a small mining village in the Dulais Valley. There, they meet a community of striking miners and their families, leading to an uneasy but growing partnership.

‘Witness’ (1985)

Ever heard of a romantic crime thriller? “Witness” is one of the best examples of the blend. It earned eight Academy Award nominations and won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing, going on to become a sleeper hit at the box office. It also brought Harrison Ford his only Oscar nomination, with the actor stepping away from his usual “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” personas to play a more grounded, vulnerable character forced into hiding among an Amish community.

Philadelphia police detective John Book (Harrison Ford) is assigned to protect a young boy, Samuel (Lukas Haas), after the child accidentally witnesses a murder in a train station bathroom. The victim turns out to be an undercover officer, and Book soon discovers corruption within the police department itself. After being ambushed, Book hides in the boy’s rural Amish community to recover. While staying there, he adapts to their way of life and develops a close bond with the boy’s mother, Rachel (Kelly McGillis).

Paramount+ is a great streaming service for building your next movie marathon. It adds dozens of movies at the beginning of each month; it just added 93 new movies and shows on June 1. The good news for you is that I've looked through the list and found three movies you need to watch first this weekend, including one of my favorite movies to rewatch. There's also a new Elvis documentary from Baz Luhrmann, whose 2022 Elvis biopic earned a Best Picture nomination. Last but not least, there's a brand new installment of the "Scream" franchise that is finally streaming at home.

'The Big Short' (2015)

Genre: Biographical comedy-drama movie

What's it about? "The Big Short" is set around the 2008 financial crisis, and features an incredible ensemble cast. It essentially divides its time between three separate groups, starting with Dr. Michael Burry (Christian Bale), who first starts to short the housing market. Through Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), this news makes it to Mark Baum's (Steve Carell) team, who promptly also starts to short the mortgage sector. Then we meet a duo of young investment bankers mentored by Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt), and they also join in once they learn of the shorts. In the end, they walk away rich while the U.S. economy collapses.

Why you should watch it: This comedy-drama is one of my favorite movies to rewatch. I watch it whenever I have writer's block, as the storytelling immediately grabs me and allows me to reset my mind whenever I'm stuck writing a piece. You probably won't watch it for that reason, but you definitely should watch it.

'EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert' (2026)

Genre: Concert documentary movie

What's it about? As part of his preparation for "Elvis," director Baz Luhrmann brought in 68 boxes of tapes that were loaded with iconic Elvis Presley performances. There was just one problem: there was no sound. "EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert" brings the restored footage, with audio, to the screen, giving you not just incredible Elvis concert scenes, but parts of previously unheard recordings of Elvis discussing his life story.

Why you should watch it: If the King of Rock and Roll is one of your favorite musicians, this documentary promises to be an incredible experience. But even if it's not, it looks like a stunning piece of music history preservation. Definitely don't miss this one now that it's finally streaming.

Genre: Reality series

What's it about? "Jackass" has been around since 2000, but the show itself only ran for a brief two years. But finally, 26 years later, you can watch all three seasons of Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Bam and the rest getting into dangerous stunts you definitely shouldn't try at home.

Why you should watch it: This version of Jackass isn't the same one you watched over two decades ago. Paramount let Knoxville restore and re-edit the series, and it is this updated version you're getting on Paramount+. It's watching "Jackass" as you've never seen it before.

'Devotion: Obedience or Betrayal'

Genre: Docuseries

What's it about? Gloriaville is a religious community in New Zealand's South Island that could easily be described as a cult. It demands strict adherence to conservative values from its members and shuns the outside world. In "Devotion: Obedience or Betrayal," you'll see not just how the community operates, but also examine the accusations others (including former members) have levied against it.

Why you should watch it: As mentioned in the trailer, there's evidence to suggest that the aesthetic of "The Handmaid's Tale" was based on the garb of the women of Gloriaville. Whether that's true or not, it's undeniable that this religious group is ultra-conservative and has a chequered past, to say the least. Binge the entire docuseries now to see this community on display for the entire world for the first time.

Top of the list are a hilarious buddy cop movie and an indie film icon, but there's also an early Paul Thomas Anderson crime drama, a Liam Neeson action flick and the movie I perhaps rewatch more than any other film.

So, without further delay, let's dive into the six newly added to Paramount+ movies and shows that I think you need to be streaming right now.

What's it about? Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as Morton Schmidt and Greg Jenko in this movie reboot of the 1980s drama series "21 Jump Street." These two were once high school classmates, but now they're partners as part of the 21 Jump Street undercover cop program.

Why you should watch it: Having these two go undercover at a high school is great. Especially since everyone knows they look way too old. Trust me, this movie will have you laughing until you cry with comedy bit after comedy bit.

'Clerks' (1994)

Genre: Black-and-white comedy

What's it about: "Clerks" follows a pair of convenience store clerks: Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) and Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson). The movie chronicles their mundane lives as they try to make it through a day's shift ... and you could argue they don't manage to succeed.

Why you should watch it: This movie is an achievement in independent filmmaking. It's also the first appearance of Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (writer/director Kevin Smith). But most importantly, it's the movie that gives us the scene where Dante and Randal debate the ethical ramifications of being a contractor on the Death Star in "Star Wars."

'Hard Eight' (1996)

Genre: Crime drama movie

What's it about? "Hard Eight" stars John C. Reilly as John Finnegan, a homeless man broke after a bad run in Vegas. Elder gambler Sydney (Philip Baker Hall) gets him a coffee and a cigarette, and then transforms the vagrant into his new protege.

Why you should watch it: This movie is the directorial debut for Paul Thomas Anderson, so it's worth watching for that reason alone. But the cast is also excellent; aside from Reilly and Hall, it stars Gwyneth Paltrow as a prostitute and Samuel L. Jackson as John's friend who is holding back a dark secret.

'Taken' (2008)

Genre: Action thriller movie

What's it about? Liam Neeson plays Bryan, a retired soldier and intelligence officer trying to live a normal life. But when his 17-year-old daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), is taken on vacation in Paris, Bryan reveals that he has a very particular set of skills, and unfortunately (for them), the bad guys don't heed his warning.

Why you should watch it: Since "Taken" came out in 2008, we've seen several old man turned action star films in a similar vein. But this might remain the best of the genre, unless you include the John Wick movies, which you arguably could. Still, "Taken is undeniably entertaining and still a must-watch nearly two decades later.

'The Big Short' (2015)

Genre: Biographical comedy-drama movie

What's it about? Set around unpacking the causes of the 2008 financial crisis, this comedy drama centers on three main groups. The first is led by Dr. Michael Burry (Christian Bale), who first starts to short the housing market. Through Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), this news makes it to Mark Baum (Steve Carell) and his team, who then also start to short the mortgage sector. Finally, there's a duo of young investment bankers mentored by Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt), who also learn of the shorts and decide to join the fray. They all walk away rich while the U.S. economy collapses.

Why you should watch it: "The Big Short" is basically three incredible ensemble performances rolled into a single movie, and it's supremely rewatchable. I actually watch it whenever I have writer's block, as it immediately sinks me in and allows me to reset my mind whenever I'm stuck on a piece. You probably won't watch it for that reason, but you definitely should watch it.

'True Grit' (2010)

Genre: Western movie

What's it about? This adaptation of "True Grit" stars Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, a drunkard lawman hired by 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld). She wants to hunt down the outlaw Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), who murdered her father, but she's not the only one. Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) is also hunting Chaney, and he's decided not to let Cogburn out of his sight.

Why you should watch it: This might be the most mainstream film the Coens have ever made. It lacks some of their trademark quirkiness. However, it still features their witty dialogue and artful cinematography. So if you like the Coen brothers but find their weirder tendencies a bit too much at times, this movie is the perfect middle ground.

For June 2026, two streamers stand out as the easiest to pause: Netflix and Paramount+. Neither is completely devoid of interesting new releases, but their current lineups don’t exactly justify the line item on your credit card statement. Here’s why these are the services you can skip this month.

Why I'd cancel Netflix

Netflix is still the default streaming app most people never think to cancel, but when the prices for everything are rising and draining your bank account, “default” isn’t really good enough anymore.

Sure, there’s an endless wall of content to scroll through, and Netflix remains unmatched when it comes to sheer volume. But what really justifies the monthly fee are the buzzy originals everyone’s talking about, and June’s slate feels surprisingly thin on those must-watch titles.

One of the more noteworthy releases is the return of the fan-favorite "Sweet Magnolias" for season 5 on June 11. The trio of besties — Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley) — will continue to navigate romance, family and their careers in their charming town, but also head off for an adventure in New York City.

The other major returning title is "Avatar: The Last Airbender," which drops season 2 on June 25. The live-action adventure tale sees Aang undertake a journey to enlist the help of the Earth King.

There's also a new Harlan Coben thriller series, "I Will Find You," on June 18. It's got a star-studded cast featuring Sam Worthington, Britt Lower and Milo Ventimiglia, and follows a man wrongfully convicted for his son's murder who learns his son is actually alive.

Plus, Netflix will debut two romantic comedy movies: "Office Romance," with Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein on June 5; and "Voicemails for Isabelle," with Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson on June 19.

So, yeah, a few bigger releases are sprinkled throughout the month, but nothing that'll make you feel FOMO for not streaming immediately. Most of these titles premiere in the second half of the month, which means you only have to wait a couple of weeks to resubscribe and binge them.

Why I'd cancel Paramount+

Paramount+ feels essential during the regular TV season for access to CBS shows and when major sports events are happening. But in June, neither is really the case.

The biggest reason to keep the platform is ongoing episodes of "Dutton Ranch," the Beth-and-Rip spinoff of "Yellowstone." But here's the thing: It's airing through July 3. You could cancel Paramount+ this month, then go back to next month and binge the entire show over the Fourth of July weekend. Talk about fireworks!

Paramount+ also has a returning original series, "The Agency," coming back for season 2 on June 21. But similar deal to "Dutton Ranch"; it's dropping weekly, so why not just wait and save?

As for access to CBS, you don’t actually need Paramount+ to keep up. You can watch CBS the old-fashioned way with a cheap over-the-air TV antenna. No monthly fee required. You could even pick up the Tablo if you want to record the programs, too.

How much you'll save by canceling Netflix and Paramount+

Cutting Netflix and Paramount+ next month can free up more room in your budget than you might expect, especially if you’re paying for one of Netflix’s increasingly pricey ad-free tiers.

Netflix now starts at $8.99/month for Standard with ads, while the regular Standard plan has jumped to $19.99/month and the Premium tier tops out at $26.99/month. Paramount+ is a bit cheaper, but not insignificant: The Essential plan costs $8.99/month, while Paramount+ Premium comes in at $13.99/month.

Depending on your plans, canceling both services for June could save you anywhere from about $18 to more than $40. And over time, rotating subscriptions is a strategy that really adds up. You could save hundreds of dollars over the course of a year, all without sacrificing much of your actual streaming time. When a must-watch show drops, you can always resubscribe. Until then, your wallet probably won’t miss the endless scrolling.

Paramount+ is a great streaming service for building your next movie marathon. It adds dozens of movies at the beginning of each month. It added 82 new movies and shows this May alone. Plus, it adds new movies from Paramount Skydance studios on an ongoing basis, a few of which I'll discuss momentarily.

So with all these newly added movies to choose from, it can be tough to know which movie to start with. The good news for you is that I've looked through the full list, and I've found the three movies you need to watch first this weekend. There's a pair of new horror movies you'll want to check out first. "Scream 7" is the latest installment in the slasher franchise and one of the biggest movies of the year, and "Slanted" is a body horror flick with a premise you won't see coming. Finally, if you like to watch Jason Statham beat up people, "The Mechanic" is a newly added movie you'll want to add to your watchlist.

'Scream 7' (2026)

Genre: Slasher horror movie

What's it about? The latest "Scream" movie brings back Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. She's rebuilt her life in Indiana and has hoped to leave Ghostface in the past, but when he reveals himself to her and targets her daughter, Tatum (Isabel May), she and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) team up to take down the masked murderer.

Why you should watch it: If you're a "Scream" completionist or need to see every horror movie, then you'll want to check out "Scream 7." Just know that critics did not like this movie, at least according to Rotten Tomatoes.

'Slanted' (2026)

Genre: Body horror–comedy movie

What's it about? Joan Huang (Shirley Chen) is a Chinese-American high school girl. She's a typical high school teen, desperate to be prom queen when one of the popular girls (Amelie Zilber) suddenly isn't running, but she can't connect with her white classmates. But she takes a highly atypical step to get the crown; she turns to Ethnos, a clinic that specializes in ethnic modification surgery. The result turns her into a white girl (played by McKenna Grace), hoping she'll finally be accepted by her peers.

Why you should watch it: If you can get on board with this movie's inarguably provocative themes, then this body horror-comedy is definitely one to watch. It feels like a combination of "The Substance" and "White Chicks," which is enough to make me intrigued.

'The Mechanic' (2011)

Genre: Action thriller movie

What's it about? Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) is an experienced hitman, given the unfortunate task of taking out his mentor, Harry (Donald Sutherland). He does it, but then takes Harry's son, Steve (Ben Foster), under his wing, and that leads to some complications at work.

Why you should watch it: "Jason Statham beats people up" is a beloved subgenre of the action thriller oeuvre. Even the bad ones tend to be enjoyable to watch, and there's far worse than "The Mechanic."

Paramount+ has tons of new shows for your weekend binge-watch. The streaming service constantly adds new episodes of hit shows and even entire seasons to binge. "Tyler Perry's Divorced Sistas," which began on BET+ but then moved to Paramount+, also just wrapped up its first season and is ready to binge. Finally, there's "Jackass." The legendary reality series full of stunts and chaos has been restored, and all three seasons are available to stream on Paramount+.

'Marshals'

Genre: Neo-Western drama series

What's it about? "Marshals" stars "Yellowstone" actor Luke Grimes, reprising his role as Kayce Dutton. This show is part sequel, part spin-off, and it follows the former U.S. Navy SEAL and rancher as he joins a specialized group of U.S. Marshals tasked with protecting the Montana wilderness.

Why you should watch it: Taylor Sheridan sat out this new "Yellowstone" series, but many familiar faces are returning from the hit show. Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty and Brecken Merrill all reprise their roles as Thomas Rainwater, Mo and Tate Dutton.

'Tyler Perry's Divorced Sistas' season 1

Genre: Comedy-drama series

What's it about? Rasheda (LeToya Luckett), Geneva (Khadeen Indréa), Naomi (Porscha Coleman), Tiffany (Briana Price), and Bridgette (Jennifer Sears) are all friends, but they're also all going through relationship problems. Part 1 of this season was on BET+, but part 2 moved to Paramount+ and escalated the drama thanks to long-simmering tensions finally erupting, causing relationships to fracture.

Why you should watch it: You might not have seen the first half of "Divorced Sistas" season 1 because it was on BET+. But now that it's on Paramount+, you can binge all of part 1 and all of part 2.

'Jackass' seasons 1-3

Genre: Reality series

What's it about? "Jackass" has been going on in some form since 2000, but the show itself only ran for three brief seasons over two years. Now, you can watch Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Bam and the rest get into dangerous stunts you definitely shouldn't try at home, with all three seasons now streaming on Paramount+.

Why you should watch it: This version of Jackass isn't the same you've been watching for 26 years. Paramount let Knoxville restore and re-edit the series, and that is the version you're getting on Paramount+. So technically, it's watching "Jackass" as you've never seen it before.

‘Devotion: Obedience or Betrayal’

“Devotion: Obedience or Betrayal” is a three-part documentary series that explores the isolated Gloriavale community in New Zealand. The series follows current and former members as they share their experiences of life inside the tightly controlled commune, where daily routines, relationships, and beliefs are shaped by strict leadership. Across three episodes, it presents contrasting perspectives from those still inside the community and those who have left.

This new doc essentially functions as a chilling, slow-burn psychological puzzle box. Rather than a traditional true-crime murder mystery often seen on streaming services, it instead focuses on an examination of faith, absolute power, and submission. Through archival footage and interviews, it traces the community’s history and the events that brought it under public and legal scrutiny.

‘All the Queen’s Men’ (season 5)

BET+ and Paramount+ were originally separate streaming services under the same corporate umbrella, with only limited overlap in content. However, they’re now being brought closer together, with BET+ programming increasingly moving into Paramount+ and being integrated into its broader library. This includes a wave of new additions such as the fifth and final season of “All the Queen’s Men,” the steamy drama executive produced by Tyler Perry.

“All the Queen’s Men” season 5 continues the story of Marilyn “Madam” DeVille (Eva Marcille) as she works to maintain control of Club Eden amid escalating conflicts within her empire. With pressure mounting and unwanted attention from law enforcement, Madam tightens her grip on the club while her closest associates — Amp (Skyh Black), Dime (Candace Maxwell), Blue (Racquel Palmer), and Doc (Michael Bolwaire) — are pulled deeper into new threats surrounding the operation.

‘The Agency’ (season 2)

One of the biggest releases on Paramount+ this month is the second season of “The Agency,” a spy thriller series featuring an impressive lineup of veteran film and TV actors, including Michael Fassbender, Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, and Katherine Waterston. Following a strong debut weekend that reportedly set viewership records for Paramount+ with Showtime, the series was quickly renewed. As a result, all 10 episodes of season 2 are dropping at once, making it instantly bingeable.

Following his forced agreement to operate as a double agent for MI6 within the CIA, season 2 follows agent Martian (Fassbender) as his world unravels. His former lover, Samia (Jodie Turner-Smith), has been taken as a political prisoner in Sudan, prompting him to launch a rogue rescue mission that crosses into outright treachery against his own country. ‘Ruthless’ (season 6)

After spending its previous seasons airing on BET+, “Ruthless” has officially migrated to Paramount+ for its highly anticipated sixth season, which will debut with a two-episode premiere. Tyler Perry’s series is a dark, gripping drama that serves as a spin-off of Perry’s hit political soap opera, “The Oval.” It very much leans into psychological thriller territory, exploring the reality of human manipulation, extreme religious fanaticism, and the desperate fight for freedom from a closed society.

“Ruthless” season 6 finds the Rakudushis cult compound descending into absolute gridlock. Ruth (Melissa L. Williams) successfully leverages her positioning to expand her direct personal influence over the cult's leader, The Highest (Matt Cedeño), triggering immense distrust and a severe fracture among long-standing members like Dikhan (Lenny Thomas) and Marva (Baadja-Lyne Odums). Meanwhile, internal operations destabilize as dangerous new regional alliances enter the compound fold.

Paramount+ has tons of new shows for your weekend binge-watch. The streaming service constantly adds new episodes of hit shows and even entire seasons to binge. In fact, it just added 82 new movies and shows on May 1. These aren't all new original shows, either; the streamer also adds new shows from Paramount's networks, like CBS, as well as coproductions with international studios.

This weekend, I've got three shows worth watching in one sitting. First, there's "Battlestar Galactica"; specifically, the 2003 miniseries and the four-season reboot that began in 2004. This sci-fi show has a devoted fan base, and you can binge it in its entirety now. Then there's "Marshals," a new spin-off sequel to "Yellowstone," which has its first season finale coming this weekend. If that's not enough Sheridanverse for you, there's also "Dutton Ranch." This is another spin-off/sequel hybrid series, and it just dropped its third episode, giving you a few hours to binge this weekend.

'Battlestar Galactica' seasons 1-4

Genre: Science fiction series

What's it about? After a 40-year armistice in a war between the humans of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol and the robotic Cylons they once created, the latter launch a surprise attack intended to exterminate the human race. It largely works, causing the aged spaceship Battlestar Galactica to be called back into service under the command of William Adama (Edward James Olmos).

Why you should watch it: This sci-fi series is beloved, with an ardent fanbase, and Paramount+ just added all four seasons, plus the 2003 miniseries. If you're a sci-fi fan and haven't seen "Battlestar Galactica" before, now's the perfect time. Especially since it's also streaming for free on Pluto TV.

'Marshals'

Genre: Neo-Western drama series

What's it about? "Marshals" stars "Yellowstone" actor Luke Grimes. He's reprising his role as Kayce Dutton in this hybrid sequel/spin-off, which follows the former U.S. Navy SEAL and rancher as he joins a specialized group of U.S. Marshals tasked with protecting the Montana wilderness.

Why you should watch it: Taylor Sheridan is sitting out this new "Yellowstone" spin-off, but many familiar faces are returning. Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty and Brecken Merrill all reprise their roles as Thomas Rainwater, Mo and Tate Dutton. Plus, it's been renewed for season 2, so you know you're committing to a show that isn't going away.

'Dutton Ranch' season 1

Genre: Neo-Western drama series

What's it about? "Marshals" may be deep into its first season, but another "Yellowstone" spin-off is just starting. "Dutton Ranch" has Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly returning to the Sheridanverse as Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton, as they start over in Texas, away from the baggage of the original series and the specter of Kevin Costner.

Why you should watch it: Simply put, if you liked "Yellowstone," I'm pretty confident you'll like "Dutton Ranch." I'm not the biggest fan of Taylor Sheridan's TV shows (it's worth noting this show isn't written by Sheridan, but rather Chad Feehan), but even I was ready to hit play on the second episode as soon as the credits rolled on the first. In my "Dutton Ranch" review, I highlighted Ed Harris and Annette Bening as being big reasons I liked this show, and after you watch, you'll see why.
