The weekend offers the ideal opportunity to watch some great movies on Netflix, and if your watchlist wasn’t already big enough, the streaming service is constantly adding new picks.

It’s September 2026 slate is packed with worthwhile new arrivals, but so much new content to consume can lead to decision paralysis as you spend more time debating what to stream than actually watching. That’s why I’m here to roundup a trio of arrivals worth your time.

My selections this week range from a brand new Netflix original comedy, to one of the very best action movies of the 1980s. Here are three new to Netflix movies to watch this weekend.

‘Best of the Best’ (2026)

Netflix has been on a frustratingly poor run of tentpole original movies lately. Earlier this week, I labeled the streamer's new mystery flick, “The Whisper Man,” one of the worst thrillers of the year (and I stand by it). However, the platform’s new teen comedy looks to be bucking the trend. The earlier reviews are positive, and it could be well positioned to surge up the top 10 charts this weekend.

In some ways, “Best of the Best” is your typical college sports movie, but its subject matter helps it stand out. It’s not set in the world of college football or basketball, but rather, competitive Bollywood-fusion dance. Starring “Never Have I Ever’s” Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia, two best friends who join the UCLA team, and as they head for the US championships, they discover the competition is fiercer than expected.

'Aliens' (1986)

The “Alien” franchise is a personal favorite, so if there’s an opportunity to fawn over the series, I’m going to take it. Netflix added both “Alien” and “Aliens” this month, and while the 1979 original is my top pick, this weekend I’m going with “Aliens,” simply because it’s no less of a masterpiece.

James Cameron's sequel is a near-perfect follow-up, trading the intense horror of its predecessor for '80s macho action. There are iconic scenes, phenomenal characters, and one of cinema’s best-ever movie monsters. Only this time, it’s not the one alien running loose; there are dozens of them!

Set 57 years after Ellen Ripley’s (Sigourney Weaver) first encounter with a terrifying Xenomorph, she’s awoken from stasis only to step into a new nightmare. The Weyland-Yutani Corporation has built a settlement on LV-246, the site where the Nostromo crew first encountered a ship full of Xeno eggs. With a squad of Colonial Marines in tow, Ripley heads back to the cursed planet, hoping to discover what happened to the colonists.

‘Stop! That! Train!’ (2026)

Described as a movie that “blends camp and comedy,” “Stop! That! Train!” is a comedy disaster movie that stars drag performers Ginger Minj, Jujubee, and the iconic RuPaul Charles. It’s a farcical ride packed with big comedy and silly moments. It didn’t find much success in theaters, but its arrival on Netflix could be just the ticket to find its audience. If you’re a dedicated fan of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” add it to your watchlist.

Tess (Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee) are best friends who work as train stewardesses for the failing Stank Rail. When they sneak onto the swanky and snotty Glamazonian Express, a catastrophic storm threatens to derail the train and see it crash into Los Angeles. Joining forces with the sobby first-class attendants and with the U.S. president aboard (RuPaul), these underdogs must save the day and look good while doing it.

There’s nothing better than getting cozy with a new show over the weekend, especially when you’ve got a couple of days to settle in and let the episodes pile up. Netflix releases so much new content every week that there’s always something fresh to watch, but that can also make deciding what to stream next feel seriously overwhelming. ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’

There’s no denying that viewers are often drawn to true crime, and the fourth installment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true-crime anthology franchise only proves that. “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” explores one of late-19th-century America’s most infamous murder cases, centering on Lizzie Borden, the complex and repressed 32-year-old at the center of the media circus. Variety’s Aramide Tinubu said this new chapter “offers something refreshing and wholly unique to the Monster canon.” So, if you’re looking for something dark to sink your teeth into this weekend, this show should scratch that itch.

Set in 1892, “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” follows Lizzie Borden (Ella Beatty), a young woman living with her wealthy family in Fall River, Massachusetts. Her life changes when Bridget “Maggie” Sullivan (Vicky Krieps), a new maid, arrives at the Borden household and quickly becomes close to Lizzie. Their relationship grows as tensions inside the family escalate, eventually leading to the brutal murders of Lizzie’s father, Andrew (Charlie Hunnam), and stepmother, Abby (Rebecca Hall). As the shocking crime captures national attention, Lizzie finds herself at the centre of an investigation and trial that will make her one of America’s most infamous murder suspects.

‘Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85’

If you’re missing the world of “Stranger Things,” you won’t want to skip the second season of the animated “in-betweenquel” spin-off. The series bridges narrative gaps within the original live-action timeline while keeping the aesthetic and tone of 1980s Saturday-morning cartoons. “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85” is lighter in tone than its live-action parent series to suit the animated medium, but it retains the atmospheric sci-fi dread and creature-feature elements without disrupting canon events. Plus, the retro visuals are particularly compelling.

Season 2 picks up after the events of the first season, with the Hawkins Investigators Club facing another strange mystery in the winter of 1985. As Valentine’s Day approaches, mysterious ghostly apparitions and strange creatures begin appearing around Hawkins, while a new threat emerges from the town’s abandoned silver mines. Eleven (Brooklyn Davey Norstedt), Mike (Luca Diaz), Will (Benjamin Plessala), Dustin (Braxton Quinney), Lucas (Elisha Williams), Max (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) and Nikki (Odessa A’zion) set out to uncover what is happening before the supernatural activity causes a new gate to the Upside Down to open.

‘I Survived A Serial Killer’

True crime is clearly a popular and reliable genre on Netflix, and there’s plenty of evidence to back that up, with a new documentary seemingly always finding its way into the top 10. “I Survived a Serial Killer” recently landed on the service, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it climb the charts over the weekend. First released in 2021, this 16-episode doc feels like a spiritual extension of the long-running “I Survived...” franchise. Rather than sensationalizing the perpetrators, it shifts the focus toward the survivors themselves while also highlighting the investigative work behind each case.

“I Survived a Serial Killer” recounts the experiences of people who survived encounters with serial killers across the United States. Each episode focuses on a different case, with survivors describing what happened in their own words alongside interviews with investigators, legal experts and others connected to the cases. The series covers attacks spanning several decades, including cases involving the Railroad Killer, Dating Game Killer, Craigslist Killer, Grim Sleeper and Toybox Killer. Re-creations, archival footage, crime scene photographs and detailed timelines are used to piece together each survivor’s experience.

The mix of spine-chilling horror and absurdist comedy has proven to be quite the winning combination for "Widow's Bay" — literally. The hit Apple TV series took home a whopping 14 Emmy Awards this year, breaking the record for the most wins by a single comedy season, including well-earned trophies for series star Matthew Rhys, supporting actors Kate O'Flynn and Stephen Root, and the biggie, Outstanding Comedy Series.

In case you missed it, the Katie Dippold-created mystery is set in the fictional New England town of Widow's Bay, a scenic but unsettling spot that, according to the island's superstitious locals, is allegedly afflicted with a centuries-old curse. Through the local mayor's (Rhys) valiant tourism-driving efforts, press attention and weekend vacationers start visiting the isolated destination — that is, until the island's dark, forgotten legends begin to come true.

While we wait for "Widow's Bay" season 2 to arrive on the Apple streaming service (a release date hasn't been announced, but we're hearing early 2028), here are five great series that offer a similar mix of chuckles and chills.

'Twin Peaks'

You can't miss the influence that "Twin Peaks" clearly had on "Widow's Bay" —small-town spookiness, strange local residents and whatnot — so why not start out with the oddball whodunnit that inspired so many others?

From the visionary minds of Mark Frost and the late, great David Lynch, the iconic 1990s mystery follows FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle McLaughlan), who is tasked with investigating the untimely demise of local teen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) in the idiosyncratic town of Twin Peaks. As the investigation progresses, however, even more mysteries and conspiracies reveal themselves, all shockingly linking back to Laura's murder. Like "Widow's Bay," Lynch's cult-classic series plays around with genre, combining a procedural investigation with surrealist horror, soap opera campiness and plenty of slice-of-life quirk.

'Midnight Mass'

"Widow's Bay" and "Midnight Mass," a Netflix horror miniseries from "The Haunting of Hill House" creator Mike Flanagan, share a lot of spooky DNA, from their settings (isolated New England island communities harboring dark pasts) to their actors.

Yes, that's Hamish Linklater (who cameos on "Widow's Bay" as Richard Warren, the 18th-century founding father of the town) leading the "Midnight Mass" cast as Father Paul, a charismatic priest whose arrival to Crockett Island coincides with seemingly miraculous events, revitalizes the town's flagging faith — until that religious fervor takes a sinister turn.

'From'

Led by the great Harold Perrineau, "From" is one of the most gripping sci-fi horror series on TV, with a fifth and final season already in the works. While we wait for that no doubt psychologically twisted finale, you can catch up on the previous four seasons, which are set in a nightmarish town in middle America that traps those who enter.

Perrineau plays Boyd Stevens, the self-appointed sheriff and de facto mayor of the Township. He and the rest of the unwilling residents (played by Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, David Alpay and Elizabeth Saunders, among others) must fight to maintain order and a sense of normalcy, all the while plagued by the deadly nocturnal creatures that creep out from the surrounding forest every night. The survivors must try to uncover the town’s secrets and find a way out, all the while being slowly and relentlessly psychologically tormented.

'Wayward Pines'

Based on the "Wayward Pines" novel trilogy by Blake Crouch and executive produced by none other than M. Night Shyamalan (who also directed the pilot), this sci-fi mystery ran for two seasons on FOX from May 2015 to July 2016. At the center of it all is Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon), who travels to the small Idaho town of Wayward Pines in search of two missing federal agents, one of whom is his former mistress Kate Hewson (Carla Gugino).

What initially seems like a simple case soon turns dangerously complicated, as Ethan discovers that he's forbidden to leave the town borders amid strict, strange rules enforced by Sheriff Arnold Pope (Terrence Howard). The "Wayward Pines" cast is stacked: Along with those high-profile leads, the series also stars Toby Jones, Juliette Lewis, Melissa Leo, Shannyn Sossamon, Hope Davis, Djimon Hounsou and Jason Patric.

'Bodkin'

Though it lacks the supernatural element of "Widow's Bay," Netflix's "Bodkin" similarly and delightfully mixes gripping mystery with dark comedy. The Jez Scharf-created series centers on a motley crew of podcasters — played to hilarious effect by Will Forte, Robyn Cara, and Siobhán Cullen — who set out to uncover the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in a remote coastal town in Ireland. Once the wannabe detectives start digging into the case, though, they realize it's all way bigger and weirder than they imagined.

"'Bodkin's' satire of true crime investigation could use a more compelling mystery to hang its quips on, but the series' sheer eccentricity makes for an intriguing enough tale from the old sod," reads the critical consensus over on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix subscribers on the hunt for thrillers this week have come to the right place. I’ve combed through the streaming service’s September 2026 slate and picked out a trio of picks to add to your watch list this week.

My selections this week are quite diverse. There’s a legendary Steven Spielberg movie often cited as one of the best films ever made. Then there’s also a “so bad it’s good” psychological ride starring Jennifer Lopez, which is very much for those morbidly curious. Or how about a more recent thriller release holding a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes?

Whatever your preference, I suspect one of these will appeal to your tastes, so here are three Netflix thriller movies to stream this week.

3 new to Netflix thrillers to watch this week

‘Jaws’ (1975)

There isn’t much I can say about “Jaws” that hasn’t been said before. This Steven Spielberg masterpiece is one of the most iconic and influential movies of all time. It changed the cinematic landscape, ushering in the “blockbuster era,” and inspiring whole generations of filmmakers. But for all the talk of its multi-decade impact, it should never be forgotten that the movie itself is just utterly brilliant. It’s tightly edited, masterfully written and so darn thrilling.

Set in the (fictional) New England town of Amity Island, the annual Fourth of July festivities are nearing, with tourists flooding its many golden beaches. However, all is not well on the shores of Amity Island as there’s a great white shark in the water. With the mayor (Murray Hamilton) refusing to close the tourist-packed beaches, a trio (Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss) take to the seas to hunt down the man-eating shark.

‘The Boy Next Door’ (2015)

I’m switching gears from a highly acclaimed film to a psychological thriller that was torn to shreds. To be clear, “The Boy Next Door” is a bad movie. So, you may be wondering why on Earth I’ve included it in this week's picks. That’s because this shlocky Jennifer Lopez vehicle definitely falls into the “so bad, it’s good” bucket. If you’re looking for a quality watch, skip it, but if you can enjoy a hilariously stupid flick, you might have fun.

Claire Peterson (Lopez) is an English teacher and single mom to a teenage son, Kevin (Ian Nelson). Her ordinary life is upended when she recklessly has a one-night stand with her 19-year-old neighbor, Noah (Ryan Guzman). She regrets the affair immediately, but Noah develops an obsession and begins a terrifying campaign of stalking, harassment and emotional manipulation. “The Boy Next Door” is corny with trashy thrills.

‘Lifehack’ (2026)

“Lifehack” is an overlooked British thriller that debuted to very impressive reviews. It holds a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but has largely flown under the radar. Its arrival on Netflix in the coming days should help to spread the word. It’s also part of the “screenlife” genre, which means that the movie is presented within a computer screen. Previous examples of this format can be seen in thrillers like “Searching” and “Missing.”

“Lifehack” sees a foursome of tech-savvy hackers attempt to steal cryptocurrency from a billionaire (Charlie Creed-Miles). When the mogul’s daughter (Jessica Reynolds) catches them in the act, it seems the game is up. However, she instead blackmails them into assisting in an even larger heist to steal her father’s entire fortune. It’s a tech-focused thriller with a social message exploring the class divide and “eat the rich” movement.

Love a sporty streaming romance? Then you no doubt have already rowed your boat over to Netflix's latest entry into the trendy genre, "Crew Girl." The sculling-squad YA drama premiered on the streaming service on Sept. 10 and has garnered a lot of buzz since thanks to its rousing mix of sporty intensity, prep-school cattiness and classic love triangles.

So if you're missing "Crew Girl," here are three great teen dramas to watch next on Netflix.

'Finding Her Edge'

Where "Crew Girl" takes the drama to the lake, "Finding Her Edge" brings it to the rink. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Jennifer Iacopelli, the Canadian series centers on Adriana Russo (Madelyn Keys), a 17-year-old former ice dancer who is forced back into the sport when her family’s Russo Rink faces financial collapse.

She teams up with a new partner, Brayden Elliot (Cale Ambrozic), to train for the World Championships in hopes of attracting sponsors and saving the struggling rink. However, Adriana's return to ice dancing is further complicated by the reemergence of Freddie O’Connell (Olly Atkins), her former skating partner and first love, who is back in her life but also skating with someone new.

The first season scored a solid 86% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critical consensus reads: "Soapy but never slipping on the ice, this binge-worthy YA adaptation glides through the screen and your time with no remorse."

'All American'

Inspired by the life of professional American football player Spencer Paysinger, this long-running gridiron drama will premiere its eighth and final season on Netflix in early October, so consider now a great time to catch up on those 130 episodes.

When Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), a rising high school football player from South Los Angeles, is recruited by coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs) to play for a rival school, the racial tensions and class differences between two vastly different worlds—Crenshaw and Beverly Hills—begin to collide.

"'All American's' ambitious attempts to tackle class struggles and classroom drama largely play thanks to its winning cast," reads the critics' consensus on Rotten Tomatoes; that stacked ensemble includes Bre-Z, Greta Onieogou, Samantha Logan, Michael Evans Behling, Cody Christian, Karimah Westbrook, Monet Mazur, and Jalyn Hall, among others.

'Olympo'

This Spanish drama focuses on the competitive aspirations and interpersonal relationships of the young athletes training at the Pirineos Center of High Performance. At the center of it all is Amaia Olaberria (Clara Galle), the accomplished captain of the national synchronized swimming team. When her best friend and duet partner Núria (María Romanillos) collapses and loses consciousness in the pool, Amaia begins investigating exactly how far her fellow athletes are going to boost their performances.

Sadly, Netflix cancelled "Olympo" after just one season, but now you can consider its eight-episode run a little binge-in-one-weekend miniseries.

In the past couple of weeks, Netflix and Prime Video have both dropped tentpole new thrillers, “The Whisper Man” and “The Runner,” respectively. As a huge fan of the thriller genre, I was hoping both (or at least one) would hit the mark. Yet, I’m not being hyperbolic when I say they are comfortably among the worst thriller movies I’ve seen in 2026 to date.

In fact, I’d probably rank both in my 10 worst movies of the year (so far), across all genres, and I’ve seen almost 100 new movies on streaming and in cinemas this year. I strongly recommend you avoid them, and if you’ve already streamed either of them (or even worse, both), then you have my sympathies. Fingers crossed you managed to enjoy them more than I did!

These might be huge misfires, but 2026 has mercifully offered a slate of new thrillers that are actually worthy of streaming, and I’ve collected five of the best below. So, skip Netflix and Prime Video’s latest original movie offerings and watch these great new thrillers instead.

‘Tuner’

“Tuner” is a phenomenal little crime thriller that really deserves more attention. It doesn’t do anything radically new for the genre, but it’s well constructed and packs a solid cast, which makes buying into its characters very easy. I can’t find any major fault with it, apart from the fact that I’d have loved for Dustin Hoffman to have a bigger role, but fortunately, Leo Woodall is a capable lead. He proves his star credentials here.

Niki White (Woodall) works as a piano tuner alongside the fatherly Harry Horowitz (Hoffman). Suffering from hyperacusis, or as he describes it, “an allergy to noise,” he uses ear protectors to drown out the world around him. When he discovers his sensitive ears are highly tuned for cracking safes, he gets involved with a criminal gang, with poor consequences. And at the same court, a gifted musical student, Ruthie (Havana Rose Liu).

‘Heel’

“Heel,” also known as “Good Boy” in some regions, is a disturbing ride, but it’s also darkly funny. Director Jan Komasa does an excellent job balancing these two tones, and the movie will have you chuckling one moment before a cold chill runs down your spine the next. It also boasts a memorable performance from Stephen Graham (star of Netflix’s “Adolescence”), who plays a very unhinged villainous character.

Tommy (Anson Boon) is a 19-year-old delinquent who is kidnapped and chained up in the basement of a family home. His captor is Chris (Graham), a man on a mission to reform society's wrongdoers. Determined to make Tommy a better person, Chris subjects his prisoner to psychological and physical abuse, which slowly starts to break down Tommy's initial resolve. This dark thriller is twisted in all the right ways, and builds to a finale that is certainly no happy ending.

‘Wasteman’

If you don’t want to take my word that “Wasteman” is worth your time, then maybe its 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes will convince you. I saw this movie early in 2026, but even months later, I’m still yet to see a lead pairing as strong as David Jonsson and Tom Blyth. Both rising stars are at the top of their game in this crime thriller set within the claustrophobic confines of a British prison. It’s a gritty, grounded take on the realities of life behind bars.

Taylor (Jonsson) is an inmate on track for an early parole for good behavior. He only needs to stay out of trouble for a few weeks, and then hopes to connect with his young son once back on the outside. However, when he’s assigned a new cellmate, Dee (Blyth), who plans to take over the prison’s contraband supply, the established order is unsettled, putting Taylor’s freedom at risk. Slowly building the tension, watching “Wasteman” is no waste of your time.

‘Crime 101’

Prime Video might be in my bad books for dropping “The Runner” this month, but perhaps I should forgive this original movie dud. That’s because earlier in the year Amazon MGM Studios gave us “Crime 101,” an excellent crime thriller with huge “Heat” energy. Set in Los Angeles, it’s a sprawling crime tale that chronicles an audacious heist from multiple perspectives. This approach gives “Crime 101” a pleasing richness. Plus, there’s plenty of star power with Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan and Halle Berry involved.

Based on Don Winslow’s novel, ”Crime 101” follows a master thief (Hemsworth) who rethinks his career after a job nearly ends fatally and he finds love with Monica Barbaro’s Maya. Meanwhile, a determined police detective (Ruffalo) is on his trail. Caught up in the mix is a young biker (Keoghan), with little interest in completing a job cleanly, and a frustrated insurance broker (Berry) who makes a rash decision that could cost her.

‘The Drama’

“The Drama” is arguably more of a dark romantic comedy than a straight-up thriller like my other picks on this list, but it definitely crosses over into the genre, and who isn’t swayed by the pairing of two of Hollywood’s most buzzy stars, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson? It’s a movie that’s a little tough to talk about because there’s a huge reveal at its core best left unspoiled. I will say, "The Drama" goes completely off the rails, and that’s a compliment.

Pattinson and Zendaya play a happy couple preparing for their wedding in just a matter of weeks. However, when something unexpected comes to light, their bliss turns sour, and their impending marriage is suddenly brought into question. “The Drama” is also a super fun movie to rewatch as there are some clever continuity tricks you might miss the first time.

When it comes to fall, I just want to watch absolutely everything. Give me colder evenings, a blanket, something good to eat and a new Netflix movie or show to sink my teeth into, and I’m happy. Thankfully, Netflix has plenty on the way this fall, with some seriously exciting releases already on my watchlist.

I’m usually pretty selective about what makes the cut, especially when there are so many new movies and shows landing on the streaming service every week. But the next few months are looking particularly strong, with returning favorites, major new releases and a few titles that could end up being some of the biggest Netflix hits of the year.

So, rather than scrolling endlessly through Netflix trying to decide what to watch, I’ve picked out the five movies and shows I’m most excited to see this fall.

‘East of Eden’

Netflix’s “East of Eden” is a seven-episode limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic 1952 novel, and judging by the first trailer, it looks pretty intense. Reimagined for TV by creator, writer, and co-showrunner Zoe Kazan, the series offers an expansive, multi-generational exploration of trauma, legacy, and human agency. Not only does it star Florence Pugh, one of the most talented actors working today, but it also focuses heavily on the complicated relationships between its three leads, setting the stage for some seriously compelling drama.

Set in early 20th-century California, “East of Eden” follows Cathy Ames (Florence Pugh), a young woman who leaves home and eventually becomes involved with brothers Adam (Christopher Abbott) and Charles Trask (Mike Faist). After Cathy marries Adam and moves with him to the Trask family’s California farm, her presence deepens the already complicated relationship between the brothers. The story then follows the Trask family across two generations, including Adam’s sons Cal (Joseph Zada) and Aron (Joe Anders), as Cathy’s actions continue to affect their lives.

‘Below’

“Below” is one of my most anticipated shows of the year in general because it’s not just a thriller, but a creature feature, and that combination really piques my interest. This six-part series is set in a small Newfoundland fishing town, where a mysterious creature begins roaming the waters. Naturally, the trailer doesn’t reveal too much about its central mystery in order to preserve the experience, which only makes me more intrigued. But it’s the plot alone that has me convinced this is going to be a thrilling watch, with a trio of performances I’m particularly looking forward to from Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton.

Calvin Penney (Josh Hartnett) is a fisherman and single father whose life is disrupted when a mysterious sea creature begins attacking the local community. As strange incidents escalate, Calvin joins forces with visiting marine researcher Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis) to investigate what is lurking beneath the water. Meanwhile, Calvin’s son Wade (Charlie Heaton) becomes caught up in the increasingly dangerous situation. With the creature threatening the town, Calvin and Fonda race to uncover the truth while protecting his family from whatever is coming ashore.

‘Animals’

“Animals” marks a major continuation of the partnership between Ben Affleck and Netflix. While Affleck has starred in streaming productions before, “Animals” is his first feature film as the director that was produced specifically for the service. This R-rated crime thriller is his fifth feature behind the camera and centers on an extreme pressure-cooker situation after a child is kidnapped. Even from the teaser, it seems to visually mirror classic 1970s paranoia thrillers, which is very much my vibe. And given Affleck’s previous work, I have no doubt this is going to be a solid movie.

Los Angeles mayoral candidate Mark Kimball (Ben Affleck) and his wife, Abigail (Kerry Washington), are thrown into a nightmare when their son is kidnapped and a ransom is demanded. With the clock ticking, the couple must find a way to raise the money needed to secure his safe return. Their search quickly forces them to turn to people and methods they would normally avoid. As pressure mounts and the ransom deadline approaches, Mark and Abigail find themselves making increasingly difficult decisions while trying to keep their family together.

‘Nobody Wants This’ season 3

So far, we’ve had intense dramas and thrillers, but as someone who enjoys a good bit of romance just as much as horror, I’m obviously going to be excited about “Nobody Wants This” season 3. The series quickly became one of Netflix’s signature modern romantic comedies when it first released in 2024, thanks in large part to the incredible chemistry between Adam Brody and Kristen Bell. It also helps that series creator Erin Foster based the story on her real-life experience of converting to Judaism to marry her husband, giving the series a personal touch.

After recommitting to each other, Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody) take the next step in their relationship by moving in together and starting a new chapter under one roof. As they settle into their new home, they experience the excitement and complications that come with building a life together. Elsewhere, Sasha (Timothy Simons) and Esther (Jackie Tohn) find themselves back in the dating world following their respective breakups, with Sasha unexpectedly finding himself enjoying single life. Meanwhile, Morgan’s (Justine Lupe) podcast career takes off, pushing her into the spotlight.

‘The Mosquito Bowl’

Lastly, we have a historical war and sports drama adapted from Buzz Bissinger’s acclaimed 2022 nonfiction book “The Mosquito Bowl.” It’s based on the incredible true story of how college football and World War II intersected in the Pacific Theater. Rather than being a typical underdog sports story, it’s also a story about friendship, patriotism and a generation of young men whose lives were changed by war. The game ultimately becomes a brief moment of joy and normalcy before they’re sent into the horrors of battle.

“The Mosquito Bowl” is based on the true story of four college football stars who enlist in the U.S. Marines after the attack on Pearl Harbor. As they train for the invasion of Okinawa, John McLaughry (Nicholas Galitzine), Bob Baumann (Bill Skarsgård), Tony Butkovich (Ray Nicholson) and David Schreiner (Tom Francis) find themselves alongside some of the greatest football players of their generation. Before heading into battle, the men take part in a legendary football game on Guadalcanal in December 1944, a match that would become known as the Mosquito Bowl.

As a book lover, I have been on a quest to read highly-rated #BookTok novels this year, and so far, my reading slump is well and truly over. But if there's one thing I love more than reading a good book, it's a well-cast, true-to-the-book screen adaptation — with bonus points if it's on the best streaming services.

Thankfully for me and fellow bookworms, 2026 (and 2027, if I'm honest) are shaping up to be great years for book adaptations. Across limited series, streaming films, and theatrical releases, there are plenty of upcoming titles in the pipeline that are sure to either be a) better than the book or b) supplementary to it. Look, sometimes series or film adaptations don't quite nail the brief, but I'm optimistic that these five entries will be worth the watch.

From impending releases that are less than a week away to those heading our way later this year, here are my five highly anticipated book-to-screen adaptations coming soon.

The Love Hypothesis - Prime Video (September 23)

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Prime Video's exceptional slate of book adaptations? From The Summer I Turned Pretty and Red, White & Royal Blue to Off Campus and the Our Fault film series, Prime Video has a lot to love in its take on beloved stories. Its next adaptation is one that I have been buzzing about since it was announced: Ali Hazelwood's The Love Hypothesis.

According to the logline, the film follows Olive (Lili Reinhart), a brilliant PhD candidate focused on her future in academia. But when she realizes her best friend Anh (Rachel Marsh) has fallen for her crush Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay), Olive impulsively kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman) to prove she’s moved on. What begins as a desperate act of friendship spirals into a fake relationship with rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial agreement. As their arrangement blurs the line between performance and reality, Olive is forced to test her most daunting hypothesis yet: that love might actually be worth the risk.

Carrie - Prime Video (October 7)

I'm not the biggest fan of horror movies or series, but everything showrunner Mike Flanagan touches turns to gold IMO, and this adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie could be another massive hit.

As per the logline, the series follows misfit high schooler Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) who has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping - in theaters (November 20)

As a teenager, the Hunger Games books and movies changed my life. Suzanne Collins wormed her way into my heart as my favorite author, and Francis Lawrence — the director of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and beyond—perfectly captured what I loved (and hated) most about the books in his films.

The latest book, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, was my favourite read of 2025, so my expectations are plenty high for the movie — slated for release this November. Better yet, fellow Aussie Joseph Zada plays the lead role, and the casting was perfect.

According to the logline, the film takes place 24 years before the first, when 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy (Zada) is selected to compete in the 50th Hunger Games. Every 25th edition of the games, known as a Quarter Quell, adds a special twist to the annual rules. For the 50th Hunger Games, each district of Panem must send twice the number of tributes to the Capitol to fight to the death in a televised spectacle.

Pride and Prejudice - Netflix (December 3)

So, this adaptation's release date is quite some time away in December, but it is definitely worth talking about. With Emma Corrin taking the lead as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden taking on Mr. Darcy, this retelling of the classic Jane Austen novel is going to be a hoot!

According to the logline, the 6-part series follows the five Bennet sisters as they navigate love, family, and society’s expectations to secure their futures when wealthy bachelors arrive in their neighborhood. Jane falls for the charming Mr Bingley, while Elizabeth clashes with his proud friend Mr Darcy – but unexpected encounters and family scandals force Elizabeth to reconsider her feelings and discover the true nature of love.

The 55-second teaser doesn't give much away, but I can already tell that the series is going to be true-to-form and might add a little bit of spice… but I guess we will have to wait and see.

Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone - HBO Max (December 25)

Okay, I won't lie — as a Potterhead, I am a teensy bit skeptical about this one since I grew up on the Daniel Radcliffe films and have fond memories of seeing the latter four in theaters during their respective release weekends. The energy was truly unmatched.

However, this HBO Max take on our boy Harry looks as magical as ever, and knowing that it's an eight-part series based on the first book likely means we're going to get more out of the story — and perhaps, a truer adaptation of the book.

As per the logline, there is nothing special about Harry Potter — or so his Aunt Petunia tells him. But when a mysterious letter of admission to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry arrives, it opens the door to a hidden world of magic, friendship and adventure. Yet behind Hogwarts’ enchanted walls lie dark secrets. Harry must find the courage to prove himself against the darkest wizard of all.

We’re barreling through September now, with colder weeks ahead and spooky season fast approaching. Add in the increasingly rainy weather, I can’t think of a better time to curl up on the couch and settle into a new show. This is easily my favorite time of year, and it’s also when I find myself binge-watching more than ever. Netflix has plenty to choose from, but not everything in its top 10 is worth your time. So, I’ve picked out three shows I think are genuinely worth adding to your watchlist this week.

That includes a new teen drama about a talented rower finding her place on an all-boys team, a twisty thriller that plunges a woman into the secrets of a wealthy social circle after a mysterious death, and the long-awaited return of a crime drama filled with scheming, gangsters and Guy Ritchie-style chaos. There’s a little bit of everything here, which is exactly what I want from my weekly Netflix picks.

‘Crew Girl’

Netflix’s latest No. 1 show is “Crew Girl,” a coming-of-age sports romance series that centers on the intense mental and strategic role of the coxswain within the competitive world of rowing. We seem to be in an era of not only passionate sports dramas, but also love triangles that drive the heart of the story, and this series very much leans into that dynamic. The lead protagonist finds herself caught between two teammates who are competing for the prestigious “stroke seat,” the rower who sets the boat’s pace. If you enjoy a juicy drama with this kind of dynamic, “Crew Girl” should be on your watchlist.

Sixteen-year-old Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau) has her life turned upside down when a family scandal forces her and her mother to leave California and start over in the small town of Eagle’s Cove. At her new school, Easton Prep, Teagan quickly discovers there is no girls’ rowing team, putting her future in the sport she loves on hold. Instead, she finds herself joining the boys’ crew team as its coxswain. As she works to earn the trust of her teammates and find her place at the school, Teagan also has to contend with two very different boys, Josh Regis (Sam Braun) and Cam Dillinger (Kyle Clark), vying for her attention.

‘The Perfect Lie’

“The Perfect Lie” is a Dutch psychological mystery-thriller based on Saskia Noort’s 2004 bestselling crime novel. The story previously received a feature film adaptation in 2010 before being reimagined as an expanded episodic series for Netflix. What’s interesting about this series is its narrative structure, which relies heavily on a police interrogation frame story and fragmented flashbacks. Each of the seven episodes is named after one of the surviving members of the core social circle, shifting perspective and recontextualizing what we’ve already seen. It very much feels like “Big Little Lies” meets “The Accident.”

When Karen (Loes Haverkort) moves with her family to Bergen, they are welcomed into an exclusive dinner club made up of wealthy couples who appear to have enviable lives. But their comfortable world is shattered when a fire breaks out at one of the group’s luxurious homes, killing Evert (Edwin Jonker) and leaving his wife and children barely alive. As the police investigate, Karen begins looking more closely at the people she has grown close to and discovers that their friendships are not quite what they seem. She soon finds herself getting closer to the truth about what happened that night.

‘The Gentlemen’

“The Gentlemen” is definitely one of the best shows in Netflix’s top 10 right now. This action-comedy crime series, created by Guy Ritchie, is set within the same shared universe as Ritchie’s 2019 feature film of the same name. The series expands the story around British aristocrats operating as fronts for international narcotics syndicates, bringing plenty of Ritchie’s signature style and chaotic energy along for the ride. Season 2 also dropped at the beginning of the month and takes the story to Italy, giving the series a welcome refresh while still sticking to its slick visual style.

When aristocrat Eddie Horniman (Theo James) inherits his family’s sprawling estate, he discovers it comes with an unexpected extra: a lucrative cannabis operation hidden beneath the property. Reluctantly drawn into the business, Eddie teams up with its sharp and formidable operator, Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario), as they deal with rival criminals, dangerous deals and the increasingly complicated world surrounding her family. By the second season, Eddie and Susie have expanded their operation beyond Britain and into Italy, where they encounter powerful new players while trying to grow their empire.

Though nearly two years later, we're still waiting to hear whether or not Netflix will be bringing this underrated gem back for a second season, "Penelope" is still well worth a watch. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics praised: "A gorgeously shot wish-fulfillment fantasy for anyone who has ever wanted respite from modernity, 'Penelope' is a distinctive and refreshing addition to the YA genre."

Carried largely by the young Megan Stott — who imbues the titular character with raw vulnerability and youthful determination, earning an Independent Spirit Award nod for Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series in the process — "Penelope" is an immersive viewing experience, with stunning nature cinematography and a thoughtfully slow pace that will leave you feeling like you, too, left the grid far behind, even for just a few hours.

This week’s slate of top new movies has been set, and it’s pretty thin for new arrivals on the best streaming services. However, Netflix is picking up the slack with two offerings for subscribers, and there are several strong picks on premium platforms.

The biggest newcomer of the week is “The End of Oak Street,” a sci-fi dinosaur-centric adventure that pays tribute to classic Spielberg movies that dominated the 80s and 90s. But if you don’t want to fork out a rental fee, Netflix has a coming-of-age comedy set in the world of college dance competition, and a new disaster flick that stars the one and only RuPaul.

If you want to add some new movies to your watchlist this week, I’ve picked out the most noteworthy arrivals across platforms. And we have a guide to the top new TV shows, too.

‘The End of Oak Street’ (PVOD)

Finding a great dinosaur movie that isn’t part of the “Jurassic Park” franchise (and that isn’t an animated family flick) is surprisingly tough, but “The End of Oak Street” was heralded by some critics as the best dino-centric film since Steven Spielberg's ‘90s classic. It holds a strong 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and while it underwhelmed at the box office, this prehistoric adventure will surely hope to receive a warmer reception on digital streaming.

Set in the 1980s, it sees an unexplained cosmic event transport a Michigan suburb back millions of years to a time when dinosaurs roamed the land. Caught up in the chaos are the Platt family, led by a husband and wife (Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway) heading for divorce. To survive in this hostile environment, the family needs to pull together. A clear tribute to the movies of the 80s/90s, particularly Spielberg's own beloved works, “The End of Oak Street” is exciting and nostalgic in equal measure.

‘Finding Emily’ (PVOD)

“Finding Emily” is my favorite new romantic comedy of the year (so far), and the perfect watch this week if you need a charming film that will make you smile by the end. Its story is very predictable, but with likeable characters, good-natured comedy and a great soundtrack, the lack of narrative subversion isn’t a problem. This is a lovely feel-good watch.

Owen (Spike Fearn) works at a student bar in Manchester, England; here he meets Emily and becomes convinced he’s just experienced love at first sight. However, when the number she gave him turns out to be missing a digit, he goes on a city-wide quest to find her. Along for the ride is an American psychology student (Angourie Rice), also named Emily, who is planning to use Owen’s plight as part of her final college assignment.

‘Tony’ (PVOD)

I went into “Tony” knowing almost nothing about Anthony Bourdain. As a Brit, my cooking show diet was dominated by Gordon Rasmey and Jamie Oliver. However, it speaks to “Tony’s” quality that I found myself warming to this coming-of-age comedy-drama set over a transformative summer that Bourdain spent working in the touristy Provincetown. Its smaller scope, focusing on a small portion of his life, makes this movie cozy.

Opening in 1975, a young Anthony Bourdain (Dominic Sessa) travels to Massachusetts in pursuit of his high school love interest, Nancy (Emilia Jones). Taking a job as a dishwasher at a quaint eatery owned by a former renowned chef (Antonio Banderas), Tony spends the summer learning a lot about working in a restaurant and picking up plenty of life lessons along the way. Sessa is great as Bourdian, with Banderas and Leo Woodall serving up complementary support.

‘It Ends’ (PVOD)

Perhaps 2026 is the year of the road horror movies; we already got “Passengers” in the spring, which saw a couple tormented by a sinister entity while on the open road, and now “It Ends” is heading to premium streaming this week, which similarly charts spooky events on a highway. This Alexander Ullom movie was briefly available to rent last December, but now it’s returning to streaming platforms in time for Halloween.

“It Ends” opens with a group of recent college graduates taking a late-night drive. This turns into a never-ending odyssey as the road ahead stretches on forever. There’s no way to turn off, and they never reach a junction; all that’s in front of them is a road that appears to go on infinitely. If this mysterious tarmac purgatory wasn’t bad enough, things get even more disturbing when unsettling cosmic horrors emerge.

‘Best of the Best’ (Netflix)

Netflix’s new original movie “Best of the Best” is about competing in a high-stakes collegiate tournament, but it’s not rooted in college football or basketball; instead, it centers on a Bollywood-fusion dance team. This rarely explored space could help the movie stand out in the crowded sports genre, and it’s described as a film about sisterhood, friendship, and self-acceptance,” by Hasan Minhaj, who plays a professor in the movie.

“Never Have I Ever’s” Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Priyanka Kedia star as two childhood best friends who join the UCLA Bollywood-fusion dance team. As they head for the US championships, they discover the competition is a lot fiercer than expected. It looks like a celebration of Bollywood and finding your culture and community. Hopefully it can break Netflix’s current original movie cold streak, as many of the streamer’s recent film efforts have been very poor.

‘Goody Goody’ (Shudder)

Halloween is on the horizon, and no streaming service loves this time of year more than Shudder, a platform dedicated to horror movies. It always prepares a packed seasonal slate, and for 2026 that includes “Goody Goody,” which takes something already pretty scary (childbirth) and twists it even further into a sinister nightmare full of shocking moments.

The movie centers on a home birth that goes seriously wrong when complications arise, and a raging blizzard outside prevents further help from arriving. Written and directed by Raymond Creamer, and starring Samantha Robinson, Colleen Foy, Zoe Renee and Colby Hollman. It’s a low-budget horror, like many Shudder Originals, but if you’re already feeling the Halloween spirit, check it out on Shudder on Friday (Sept. 18).

‘Stop! That! Train!’ (Netflix)

“Stop! That! Train!” was another movie that failed to spark much interest in theaters. Even with its relatively modest $12M budget, it was unable to recoup production costs. However, don’t make the same mistake twice and skip it again. This action-comedy received rave reviews and features RuPaul! It deserves a second chance to find a larger audience, and its arrival on Netflix gives it the perfect platform to get a second wind.

Tess (Ginger Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee) are best friends working as train stewardesses for failing business Stank Rail. When they sneak onto the swanky Glamazonian Express, a catastrophic storm threatens to derail the train and see it crash into Los Angeles. Joining forces with the snobby first-class attendants and with the president aboard (RuPaul), these underdogs must save the day in a movie that blends camp and comedy.

That's not necessarily a lot to sort through, but you're still going to want some advice on which select few deserve making it onto your watchlist.

'Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story'

Genre: Biographical crime drama anthology series

What it's about: "Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story" marks the fourth season of the hit anthology series "Monster." This time, we're diving into the life of Lizzie Borden (Ella Beatty). She was famously (or infamously) acquitted of the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. But people are convinced to this day that she's guilty.

Why you should watch it: This is the second edition of "Monster" not to involve show creator Ryan Murphy. It's also the second edition to feature Charlie Hunnam, this time as Lizzie's father, Andrew. Hopefully, things go better this time; "The Ed Gein Story" was not well received, despite Hunnam's performance.

'Stranger Things: Tales From '85' season 2

Genre: Animated sci-fi series

What it's about: "Stranger Things: Tales from '85" is back for another season, and it's still set in Hawkins and full of 80s nostalgia. In fact, it picks up right after the events of the first season. But while the gang of Eleven (Brooklyn Davey Norstedt), Mike (Luca Diaz), Will (Benjamin Plessala), Lucas (Elisha “EJ” Williams), Max (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport), and Nikki (Odessa A’zion) are hoping things will go back to normal, a haunted woods is about to prove things are never normal in Hawkins.

Why you should watch it: This show may have new actors playing them, but it still features the original characters and locations from "Stranger Things." So if you enjoyed the original series, this animated spinoff should be easy to connect with.

'Best of the Best'

Genre: Dance comedy movie

What it's about: "Best of the Best" follows two childhood friends, Maya (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and Anjali (Priyanka Kedia), who join UCLA's competitive Bollywood-fusion dance team. But once there, they discover that this dance squad is even more cutthroat than getting into college was, and all that matters is winning the U.S. championship.

Why you should watch it: Technically, I don't think this is a Bollywood movie, as my research has led me to believe "Best of the Best" was filmed in New Jersey. But whether you like Bollywood dance numbers or movies like "Mean Girls" and "Bring It On," this movie seems to have something for you.

'Jo Koy: Blue in the Face'

Genre: Stand-up comedy special

What it's about: In "Blue in the Face," comedian Jo Koy returns to Netflix for his sixth special on the streaming service. This time, he's talking about wild dental disasters, getting fired from McDonald's, his veteran stepdad, and, based on this trailer, a dog repeatedly barking in your face.

Why you should watch it: Koy is one of the most popular stand-up comedians touring right now, as evidenced by the fact that he has more Netflix specials than most TV shows get seasons. So if you're looking for a new reason to laugh, this hour of stand-up is worth checking out.

"Stop! That! Train!

Genre: Action comedy disaster movie

What it's about: Tess (Ginger Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee) are two stewardesses looking for work. So they sneak aboard the high-class Glamazonian Express, only to discover it's headed straight for a massive storm, better known as "Stormganza."

Why you should watch it: "Stop! That! Train!" is essentially "Airplane!" meets "RuPaul's Drag Race." And I don't mean that as an insult — it's a selling point. Watch the trailer, try not to laugh, and once you're done, add this movie to your watchlist.

Tyler Perry movies and Netflix go together like peanut butter and jelly, and his latest flicks never fail to shoot to the #1 spot in the Netflix top 10. I'm spotlighting three comedies I think fans of "Why Did I Get Married Again?" will really enjoy, including Vince Vaughn's heartwarming and mouthwatering dramedy "Nonnas," Keke Palmer and SZA's buddy comedy "One of Them Days," and the best "Madea" movie in Perry's Netflix era to date: "A Madea Homecoming."

'Nonnas' (2025)

In my home, Sunday is for meal prepping. And for some seriously scrumptious vibes, I like to put on something like Vince Vaughn's "Nonnas" in the background while I cook. This dramedy from Stephen Chbosky ("The Perks of Being a Wallflower") has a solid 82% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and is inspired by a heartwarming true story — just the kind of breezy watch to get your week off on the right foot.

Vaugn stars as Joe Scaravella (Vaughn), an Italian-American from Brooklyn who finds himself at a crossroads after losing his mother and grandmother. Navigating life without their gravity feels impossible, and he finds solace in the time-honored family recipes he grew up with. He cooks up a plan to share that feeling with his community, opening up a Staten Island restaurant staffed entirely by feisty Italian grandmothers, lovingly referred to as nonnas, played by Hollywood legends Susan Sarandon, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, and Lorraine Bracco.

'One of Them Days' (2025)

For some raunchier jokes this weekend, look no further than Keke Palmer and SZA's buddy comedy "One of Them Days." It's one of those movies I return to again and again, and one joke about a tumble-weave never fails to get a laugh. Directed by Lawrence Lamont, it follows two broke besties, Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), left scrambling to scrounge up rent money after Alyssa's boyfriend Keshawn (Joshua Neal) leaves them high and dry.

With just hours to fork over $1,500 before their landlord kicks them out, the two set out on a madcap quest to score cash by any means necessary — and piss off a major gang banger in the process. While it has plenty of laughs, beneath the chaos and a great cameo by Katt Williams is a genuinely sweet story about showing up for who matters most to you. Palmer and SZA are hilarious together, and if you’re into comedies with a lot of heart, this one’s definitely worth watching.

'A Madea Homecoming' (2023)

I'm pretty sure it's illegal NOT to include at least one Tyler Perry movie on this list, and of the "Madea" entries he's made for Netflix so far, "A Madea Homecoming" is the only one worth watching. Its 73% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes aside, it was also the last "Madea" movie I watched with my mom before she passed, so it'll always hold a special place in my heart.

Adapted from Perry’s stage play Madea’s Farewell Play, this comedy uses the same zany cast characters we've grown to love over the years, like Cassi Davis' Aunt Bam and David Mann Uncle Leroy Brown, this time all getting together to celebrate Madea's great-grandson's college graduation as a centerpiece for many antics. Family from far and wide come home, but drama and secrets, of course, threaten to turn the good time into a circus.

'Love and Leashes'

If your rom-com proclivities run a bit more "Secretary" than "Serendipity," this is the movie for you. Based on the webtoon "Moral Sense" by Gyeoul, this risqué South Korean romance pairs together Seohyun and Lee Jun-young as co-workers Ji-hoo and Ji-woo, respectively, who decide to enter into a consensual, contractual relationship for three months, all while trying their best not to get feelings involved.

But if you're getting "50 Shades" vibes from that movie synopsis, know that this Park Hyun-jin-directed flick is more lighthearted and playful than that melodramatic franchise. "Seohyun and Lee Jun-young deliver sweet and wholesome performances," wrote critic James March of the South China Morning Post, praising the film for its "commendable effort to lift the blindfold on a stigmatised subculture."

'Sweet & Sour'

Based on the novel "Initiation Love" by Kurumi Inui, this sweet 2021 romantic comedy from Lee Gye-byeok delves into that all-too-relatable issue of how to make a long-distance relationship work. The story centers on Jang-hyuk (Jang Ki-yong), who meets a nurse named Da-eun (Chae Soo-bin) while hospitalized in Incheon with hepatitis.

After he gets healthier, they kick off a relationship together, only for Jang-hyuk to have to move away to Seoul when he lands a temporary but demanding corporate job. Soon, the work pressures and miles between them manifest as emotional distance between the couple, until a late-in-the-movie twist leaves you rethinking everything that happened in the hour-plus prior.

'20th Century Girl'

Written and directed by Bang Woo-ri in her feature film debut, this late-'90s-set coming-of-age rom-com revolves around Na Bo-ra (Kim You-jung), a 17-year-old high-schooler who has promised her lovesick best friend Yeon-du (Roh Yoon-seo) that she'll keep close tabs on her pal's crush while the latter girl is in the US for surgery. However, things become complicated when Bo-ra starts tailing the boy and inadvertently falls for him herself.

Also starring Byeon Woo-seok and Park Jung-woo, the charming 2022 title was widely praised by critics for its heart and humor (it has an 86% approval rating), including Variety's Claire Lee, who wrote: "20th Century Girl' does manage to add to the timeworn theme of first love by providing a moving examination of what makes certain moments and certain people unforgettable."

'Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Again?' (2026)

Netflix subscribers can't get enough of Tyler Perry, so I'm not surprised to see his latest "Why Did I Get Married Again?" still in the #1 spot after coming out on September 9. It revives a franchise that's so old, I'm sure some subscribers don't even realize it's a reboot. Most of the original cast of "Why Did I Get Married?" and "Why Did I Get Married Too?" reunite for an Italian wedding — including Diane (Sharon Leal), Sheila (Jill Scott), Troy (Lamman Rucker), and Mike (Richard T. Jones). The only one missing is Janet Jackson's Patricia, replaced by a new character named Roselyn (Taraji P. Henson).

Jasmine (Armani Greer) and Wesley (Everett Osbourne) are a young couple just days away from saying "I do" at a grand destination wedding. Their occasion has older wedding guests reflecting on the highs and lows of their own marriages, but as the less-than-happy couple wrestles with going through with the ceremony, it forces the other couples to take a hard look at their own happily-ever-afters.

'Turning Point: Generation 9/11' (2026)

I'm surprised to see "Turning Point: Generation 9/11" holding strong in the top 10 (and it's actually climbed a few spots since last weekend!) because of everything "Turning Point's" put out, I thought this feature-length documentary was the weakest. To be fair, that bar is pretty damn high. My husband and I regularly return to "Turning Point's" phenomenal docuseries on the Cold War and Vietnam War for their engaging recaps of historical events before our time. The kind of context that makes it easier to wrap your head around the Unprecedented Times our country's in now.

In "Generation 9/11," filmmaker Brian Knappenberger examines how the September 11 attacks still impact everything in our daily lives through interviews with survivors of the attacks and those who lost loved ones in the attacks. It's an emotional watch, to be sure, but if you're looking to dive into the subject on a deeper level, I can't recommend "Turning's Point's" docuseries on 9/11 enough.

'Puss in Boots: The Last Wish' (2022)

I didn't have high hopes for "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" at first, having never seen the original "Puss in Boots." But I'm happy to say this decade-in-the-making sequel is the rare spin-off that surpasses the original, and it's on par with the "Spider-Verse" series with vibrant animation that's a feast for the eyes. "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" feels like a storybook come to life thanks to some clever blending of 3D and 2D animation.

Antonio Banderas returns as the beloved Puss, joined by Salma Hayek as Kitty, along with a new set of fairy-tale characters like Jack Horner (voiced by a hilariously evil John Mulaney), Goldilocks (Florence Pugh), and her Three Bears Crime Family (Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, and Samson Kayo). Packed with lush-painted backgrounds, stylized fight scenes that really pop, and razer-sharp humor, "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" is the kind of kids' movie you won't mind if your children insist on watching it on repeat.

'DANG!'

Created by Andrew Law and Matt Murray—with Mike Schur (“The Good Place,” “Parks & Recreation”) as an executive producer—this adult animated series follows the chaotic New York City lives of millennial siblings Andrew (voiced by Law) and Eunice (Poppy Liu). However, their messy brother-sister fun is interrupted when their uptight, high-achieving older sis Ruthie (Stephanie Hsu) shows up and wants to hang out with them.

The tone of the eight-episode first season is “slightly sweet but mostly irreverent,” says Angie Han in her The Hollywood Reporter review. “Dang! doesn’t pretend its characters are not terrible people — Ruthie is a cold-blooded capitalist, Andrew a toxic combination of passive-aggressive and pushover, Eunice simply a brat. But it also understands their love for one another as sincere, if imperfect.

'Crew Girl'

Youthful sports romances have certainly been a hit for the streaming world as of late—see ”Heated Rivalry,” “Off Campus,” “Finding Her Edge,” et al.—and the trend doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. The latest entry into the fan-favorite genre is this Canadian row-team romance centering on Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau), a talented 16-year-old sculler forced to relocate to a small East Coast town with her mom Ella (Jessica Paré) after a family scandal.

There, she enrolls in the elite Easton Prep school, which frustratingly does not have a girls’ rowing team. Her only option for continuing her competitive rowing dreams is to join the school’s chaotic all-boys crew as the boat’s coxswain, which puts her right in the middle of—what else?—a steaming love triangle between Easton’s golden boy Josh Regis (Sam Braun) and the quiet local Cam Dillinger (Kyle Clark). “You can expect a lot of drama, a lot of abs, a lot of rowing,” Martineau teased at Netflix’s End of Summer Bash event.

'The Perfect Lie'

If you're a fan of mystery-thrillers set in ritzy neighborhoods—think "Big Little Lies," "The Perfect Couple" and the like—you'll enjoy this Dutch psychological drama, which is based on the bestselling novel "The Dinner Club" ("De Eetclub") by Saskia Noort.

Our entry point into the story is Karen (Loes Haverkort), who moves with her family to Bergen, an affluent village in the Netherlands. There, she's welcomed by a close-knit group of women who enjoy an extravagant lifestyle—that is, until a house fire burns down a villa and leaves one of their husbands dead. As Karen starts digging into what exactly caused the tragedy, she unearths dark secrets that have her looking at her new social circle in a scary new light.

The weekends were made for watching great movies on some of the best streaming services, and if you're looking for new arrivals on Netflix, you're in luck. The streamer recently added a slew of movies to its library, and I've combed through the list to find three picks worthy of your watchlist.

These include one of the most charming romantic comedies I've ever seen. I challenge you not to feel all warm and fuzzy after watching. Or, if you want thrills, how about the best sci-fi horror movie ever made in the form of "Alien." Meanwhile, comedy fans should check a very silly but very funny genre effort starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne.

These three movies just recently arrived on Netflix, and each one makes for a great watch this weekend. So, let's dive into my picks this week.

‘About Time’ (2013)

I’m a little picky when it comes to rom-coms. I do enjoy the genre, but there’s a fine line between charming and sappy. “About Time” finds the perfect balance. It’s very sentimental but never crosses into cloyingly sweet. It’s a feel-good movie that celebrates the beautiful mundanity of life, and like all good rom-coms, has two lovable leads in the form of Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams. Not to mention Bill Nighy in a wonderful supporting role.

Tim (Gleeson) is an everyman who learns from his father (Nighy) that all the men in their family possess a special gift: the ability to travel through time. His power is limited to traveling back to points in his own life, and so he uses his strange ability to meet the perfect girl, which he quickly realizes is Mary (McAdams). This isn’t a time travel movie about saving the world, but about using your limited time on Earth to find true happiness.

‘Alien’ (1979)

“Alien” is not only my favorite movie of all time, but the larger franchise is my favorite in all of media, so if given the chance to recommend it, I'll always take it. At the start of the month, Netflix added both “Alien” and its fan-favorite sequel “Aliens,” so if you’re looking for a double-bill this weekend, look no further. However, much as I love James Cameron’s gung-ho follow-up, it’s the original “Alien” that remains peerless in my book.

The most effective sci-fi horror movie ever made, “Alien” is an intense experience. When it’s not making your skin crawl with fear, it’s constructing a sci-fi future that feels tangible and more than deserving of the further exploration it’s received in the decades since the Xenomorph was first unleashed on audiences. If you somehow don’t know the basics of this masterpiece, it follows the crew of the space ship Nostromo as they encounter an alien life form, one designed to be the perfect predator.

‘Neighbors’ (2014)

Looking for laughs this weekend? Then I submit “Neighbors.” This crude 2014 comedy is neatly pitched around its “family vs. frat” premise, and boasts hilarious performances from an all-star cast of very funny people including Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron and Dave Franco. For Efron in particular, “Neighbors” was a breakout role, allowing him to shed his Disney skin after being known for starring in “High School Musical."

Couple Mac (Rogen) and Kelly (Byrne) are adapting to life with a newborn baby, which is already testing enough. However, things get even more complicated when a boisterous fraternity moves into the house next door. Led by Teddy (Efron) and Pete (Franco), the college group brings utter chaos and debauchery to the neighborhood. At first, Mac and Kelly try to play nice with the fraternity, but eventually reach their limit and engage in a plan to sabotage Delta Psi Beta and get them kicked off campus.

Every week, I comb through the latest movies added to Netflix to pick out the thrillers worthy of your watchlist. The genre is persistently popular with streaming viewers, and as a huge thriller fan myself, I’m always on the hunt for movies full of tension, suspense, and unexpected twists.

3 new to Netflix thrillers to watch this week

‘Smile 2’ (2024)

“Smile 2” might be more accurately classified as a horror, but it packs a real psychological punch. So long as you can handle a few jump scares, its exploration of a descent into madness will appeal to fans of dark thrillers. It also boasts a spotlight-stealing performance from Naomi Scott that will delight anybody impressed by Inde Navarrette's turn in “Obsession” earlier this year. Scott gives an equally committed and memorable performance.

Set a few days after the original (but don’t worry, “Smile 2” is mostly standalone), Skye Riley (Scott) is a pop star about to make a comeback after controversy derailed her career. Preparing for a world tour, she experiences increasingly disturbing and terrifying events after encountering a sinister curse. As her life spirals out of control, Skye resorts to extreme measures to rid herself of the evil entity stalking her.

‘Ready or Not’ (2019)

“Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” landed in theaters earlier this year, but the original remains the stronger of the two. This wickedly sinister horror-thriller sees a new bride forced into a deadly game of hide-and-seek. It’s also another pick on this list with a strong female lead. This time in the form of Samara Weaving, who has recently been confirmed as Emma Frost in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “X-Men” reboot. I think she’ll nail it!

In “Ready or Not,” Grace (Weaving) learns that after marrying into the wealthy Le Domas family, she must play a game on her wedding night per their tradition. It’s a strange request, but it seems harmless until she pulls the “Hide-and-Seek” card and discovers that her new in-laws are going to hunt her down for real, believing she must be sacrificed to appease an evil being known as Le Bail. To survive, Grace must stay hidden until dawn.

‘Scarface’ (1983)

“Scarface” might be more than 40 years old, but I suspect it’s going to have a resurgence of attention in the weeks ahead because of Grand Theft Auto VI. The hugely anticipated game is set in Vice City, which is the franchise’s stand-in for Miami. The location was last seen in 2002’s GTA: Vice City, which is overflowing with nods to “Scarface,” so I expect anybody eagerly awaiting GTA 6 will want to watch this classic to get in the mood.

Directed by Brian De Palma, “Scarface” centers on Cuban immigrant Tony Montana (Pacino) who arrives in ‘80s Miami alongside his friend, Manny (Steven Bauer). Looking to score his slice of the American dream, Tony begins building a criminal empire. But as his power increases, so does his list of enemies. As he becomes increasingly paranoid and unpredictable, Tony’s inevitable downfall could be even swifter than his rapid rise.

Netflix releases more original sci-fi than almost anyone — and just as easily lets it vanish. For every title that gets a billboard and a month anchored to the top of your home screen, a dozen others land without a whisper and slide straight into the catalog's depths, never to resurface again. Add to that the licensed sci-fi gems constantly slipping under the radar, and it’s clear the platform has a discovery problem.

That's a shame, because some of the service's most compelling science fiction is hiding right in those shadows, just as deserving of your time as any hyped-up blockbuster. The trouble, as always, is knowing where to dig.

I’ve pulled out three underrated sci-fi movies on Netflix you’ve probably scrolled right past. They offer three distinct flavors of the genre, but they share one crucial trait: you likely haven’t seen them. Give them a watch, rescue them from obscurity, and see if they deserve a permanent spot in your sci-fi lineup.

'Io' (2019)

In "Io", Margaret Qualley stars as Sam, one of the last people left on a near-future Earth whose atmosphere has turned toxic, while the rest of humanity has evacuated to a colony orbiting Jupiter's moon Io. She spends her days running experiments, hoping to prove that life can adapt to the poisoned air, until a stranger named Micah (Anthony Mackie) arrives by balloon with his sights set on the last shuttle off the planet. The whole film boils down to a single question the two of them keep dancing around: do you flee a dying world, or stay and fight for it?

'Spectral' (2016)

This sci-fi flick mixes in a bit of a ghost story with its main premise. James Badge Dale plays a DARPA engineer sent into an Eastern European city where soldiers are being killed by figures that only show up through special goggles. They're apparent "ghosts" that walk through walls and can't be stopped by bullets. Except the "ghosts" turn out to have a hard-science explanation, which sends the team scrambling to engineer weapons that can actually fight them. If it sounds like an exciting time that also relies on future tech, you're right. And we're willing to bet you've never heard of a premise like this one.

'Anon' (2018)

Clive Owen plays a detective in a near-future where everyone's vision is constantly recorded and stored, which has more or less killed both privacy and crime. Police can simply replay whatever a witness or victim saw, and don't have to rely on statements or alibis. Then he crosses paths with a woman (Amanda Seyfried) who has no identity in the system at all and can hack into what people see, then edit their reality in real time. She also happens to be tied to a string of murders no one can solve. As she starts manipulating Owen's own vision, things begin to melt into an unreliable narrator-centric story that forces you to ask: is reality only everything we can see, or is it something more?

It’s pouring with rain as I’m writing about the most binge-worthy shows on Netflix right now, and honestly, it feels perfectly fitting. There’s no better time to cozy up with a new series and settle in for a binge-watch. However, knowing what to watch can feel overwhelming when Netflix is constantly adding new movies and shows. When my watchlist gets too crowded, I turn to Netflix’s top 10 list to see what everyone else is watching. It’s usually a pretty good indicator of which titles are currently the most compelling.

Every week, I scroll through Netflix’s trending list to pick out three shows that are actually worth watching. Just because something makes it into the top 10 doesn’t necessarily mean it deserves a spot on your watchlist, so I like to separate the must-watch hits. This week’s picks cover a little bit of everything, including the new season of a hit action-comedy from Guy Ritchie, a hugely popular teen adventure drama that has now run for five seasons, and a fast-paced investigative doc that digs into a bizarre recent news story.

‘The Gentlemen’

The biggest series in Netflix’s top 10 right now is “The Gentlemen,” and for good reason, considering season 2 of the popular crime drama recently dropped. Created by Guy Ritchie, the show is a TV spin-off set in the same world as Ritchie’s 2019 film of the same name, exploring the intersection between Britain’s wealthy landowners and its underground criminal empires. While the first season was primarily set in the English countryside, season 2 expands the story to Italy, giving the series a refreshing change of scenery.

When British Army officer Eddie Horniman (Theo James) unexpectedly inherits his father’s sprawling country estate and the title of Duke of Halstead, he discovers that the property comes with an unusual complication: it is home to a huge underground cannabis operation. Determined to free his family from the criminal business, Eddie finds himself dealing with Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario), the sharp and formidable woman overseeing the operation. As Eddie attempts to negotiate his way out, he becomes increasingly entangled with rival criminals.

‘Outer Banks’

Another show that dropped a new season not too long ago was “Outer Banks,” and it’s still holding strong in the top 10. This action-packed teen drama was created by twin brothers Josh and Jonas Pate, along with Shannon Burke, who drew heavy inspiration from classic adventure movies and shows like “The Goonies,” “Indiana Jones,” and “Dawson’s Creek.” Even though the show has now wrapped up with its fifth and final season, it still makes for a very good binge-watch, especially for those who enjoy their dramas with a juicy dose of romantic conflict.

Set on a North Carolina island, “Outer Banks” follows John B (Chase Stokes) and his close-knit group of friends, known as the Pogues. After John B’s father mysteriously disappears while searching for a legendary shipwreck, John B and his friends discover a clue that could lead them to a fortune in lost treasure. Their search takes them across the island as they uncover new clues, evade dangerous enemies and become caught up in conflicts with a rival group of wealthy local teenagers known as the Kooks. The series also stars Madelyn Cline, Drew Starkey, Rudy Pankow, and Madison Bailey.

‘The Decoy Plane’

“Instadocs: The Decoy Plane” is a rapid-turnaround investigative documentary released on Netflix as part of the streamer’s “Instadocs” current affairs anthology series. Helmed by showrunner Steve Yaccino, the project is designed to examine high-profile breaking news events in near real time while they’re still dominating the public conversation. It features firsthand accounts from White House reporters and photojournalists who were aboard the primary aircraft, alongside insights from former Secret Service agents and former Air Force One crew members.

This short documentary revolves around a secret operation during Donald Trump’s return from a NATO summit in Turkey in July 2026. After boarding Air Force One, Trump was secretly transferred off the aircraft via a catering truck and placed on another plane, while journalists and other passengers continued their journey aboard the original aircraft without knowing he had left. The documentary reconstructs the incident through interviews with reporters, a former Secret Service agent and a former Air Force One crew member, alongside footage from the event.

It’s set to be another busy week for new movies across the best streaming services. Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max and Starz have fresh flicks for subscribers to enjoy, while a trio of options arrives on premium streaming. Whatever your tastes, there’s sure to be a movie for you.

I suspect this week’s most popular new movie will be Tyler Perry’s latest project on Netflix, which sees him return to his 2000s comedy-drama series, “Why Did I Get Married?” Meanwhile, HBO Max adds “Supergirl” to its library, and Hulu has a dark thriller from the director of “The Platform.” On PVOD, there’s a Disney remake, a Jason Statham action movie and a rom-com the internet dubbed “‘The Purge’ but for sex” over the summer.

There are plenty of new options to consider this week, so I’m highlighting the most noteworthy new arrivals to help you spend more time watching movies and less time scrolling through streaming service libraries. And we’ve also got a guide to the top new TV shows this week, too.

‘Moana’ (PVOD)

Disney’s latest live-action remake was perhaps its most unnecessary yet. The original animated “Moana” is just a decade old, with a sequel landing in 2024. There hasn’t been enough time yet for audiences to get nostalgic about Moana, and the movie’s poor box office takings appear to reinforce that idea. It grossed $315 million, which sounds like a lot, but with a $250 million budget, it’s not even close to profitable. Maybe it’ll swim on digital?

If you’ve seen the original “Moana,” you know the deal here; this family-friendly adventure follows the eponymous heroine (Catherine Laga'aia) as she embarks on an ocean odyssey to save her island from a curse. She’s joined on her quest by demi-goal Maui (Dwayne Johnson, reprising his role from the original). The foundations are still solid, but in a world where the animated “Moana” exists, there’s little need for this live-action adaptation.

‘Mutiny’ (PVOD)

The rollout of Jason Statham’s new action-thriller “Mutiny” was noteworthy because Amazon accidentally leaked the movie by putting it up on Prime Video for several hours. It was eventually removed, and now it’s heading to streaming in an official capacity. “Mutiny” offers viewers exactly what you’d expect from a Statham-led action movie. The British actor plays a former military man, now working as a bodyguard, drawn into a criminal conspiracy.

In “Muntiny,” Cole Reed (Statham) must spring into action when his billionaire boss is murdered, and he’s framed for the crime. Stowing away on a cargo ship, he uncovers a criminal plot and must bring down those responsible, while also clearing his name. The boat setting adds a degree of novelty (fortunately it’s better than “Speed 2”), but otherwise "Mutiny" is a very predictable and unambitious action-thriller with Statham largely going through the motions.

‘One Night Only’ (PVOD)

“One Night Only” made a lot of waves online thanks to its high-concept premise. This romantic comedy is set in a world in which the United States government has outlawed premarital sex. But to avoid public backlash, for one night a year, during a 12-hour window, sex is permitted. The internet dubbed this “‘The Purge’ but for sex,” and it’s certainly a kooky idea for a movie. However, beyond the novel setup, this is a very cliché rom-com.

Callum Turner plays Owen, an NYC pizza shop owner, who is dumped by his girlfriend just as the 12-hour window begins. At the same time, Allie (Monica Barbaro) is across town, looking for a meaningful connection on a night where everybody wants to hook up. Naturally, their paths cross, sparks fly, and you can probably guess where it goes from here. Turner’s leading man credentials are unconvincing, but Barbao has effortless charm.

‘Why Did I Get Married Again?’ (Netflix)

Tyler Perry is one of Netflix’s most dependable collaborators. His popular Madea character and spin-offs like "Joe’s College Road Trip,” which hit Netflix in February, always go down a treat with subscribers. However, Perry’s latest Netflix project doesn’t feature the loud-mouthed aunt; instead he’s returning to his 2007 comedy-drama “Why Did I Get Married?” for a long-awaited second sequel, “Why Did I Get Married Again?”

Following on from 2010’s “Why Did I Get Married Too?,” this revival again explores long-term relationships, and the various hurdles faced once a couple becomes husband and wife. Several original cast members return, including Perry, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Michael Jai White and Tash Smith, though Janet Jackson is absent this time. Critics were never hot on this franchise, but Perry has a strong track record of appealing to viewers.

‘Supergirl’ (HBO Max)

The second feature film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe was an outright box office bomb, grossing $126 million against an estimated budget of $170-180 million. But the hope will be that Supergirl can take flight on HBO Max. While I didn’t find “Supergirl” worthy of a cinema trip, it’s far from the worst comic-book movie released in recent years. Milly Alcock is excellent as the titular hero, and it’s perhaps worth watching ahead of “Man of Tomorrow” landing in theaters next summer. Alcock’s Kara Zor-El is confirmed to appear in the "Superman" sequel.

Based on the fan-favorite “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic book, Kara Zor-El hasn’t taken to being a world-saving hero like her cousin Clark Kent (aka Superman). Instead, Supergirl spends her days aimlessly wandering between planets and visiting dive bars. But she’s forced to adopt the hero lifestyle when a ruthless villain emerges. She teams up with a young survivor (Eve Ridley) to dish out some justice and save her fan-favorite dog, Krypto.

‘Rich Flu’ (Hulu)

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, director of Netflix’s “The Platform,” delivers another thriller that explores class divide, but this time it’s the 1% under the spotlight. The cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rafe Spall, and while the reviews have been mixed (it’s currently rated 50% on Rotten Tomatoes), I’m always willing to check out a movie with satirical bite.

Laura (Elizabeth Winstead) is reaching a career peak when a mysterious virus emerges. This disease selectively targets the ultra-wealthy. Overnight, having wealth becomes a death sentence, which leads the most well-off in society to desperately try to give away their vast fortunes to avoid their demise. With the virus making its way down the wealth ladder, Laura embarks on a desperate journey across the globe to save her family.

‘In the Grey’ (Starz)

Starz doesn’t always get the same level of attention as the likes of Netflix, Prime Video and the rest of the biggest streamers, but this week it’ll hope to get its share of the spotlight as it drops a new movie, “In the Grey.” This action-thriller has quite the cast, including Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza Gonzalez and Rosamund Pike, and it comes from writer/director Guy Ritchie. So there’s lots of talent in front of and behind the camera.

Rachel Wild (Gonzalez) works in debt recovery for various powerful clients, employing two clandestine operatives, Sid (Cavill) and Bronco (Gyllenhaal), to pressure targets to repay. But the team faces its toughest mission yet when they are assigned to retrieve a stolen billion-dollar fortune. What begins as an impossible heist becomes even more complex as the delicate situation spirals into a cutthroat war of strategy, deception and survival with a ruthless tyrant (Carlos Bardem) pulling the strings.

What it's about: Stavros Halkias is a Baltimore legend, and he's bringing his hometown to Netflix this week. In "Uncle Stav," he and director Matt Johnson, who directed Halkias in "Tony," taped a brand-new hour-long special at The Lyric theater in Baltimore. Expect topics like a family member coming out to a grandmother with memory issues, which you can watch in the trailer above.

Why you should watch it: As a Maryland native myself, I'm proud to plug Halkias's work, and I'd do it even if it weren't always excellent. Luckily, Halkias is hilarious, so I'm not worried about this hour-long special being anything less than time well spent.

NFL Melbourne Game: San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams

Genre: Live sports event

What it's about: This NFL season, Netflix is getting a game to start the year. In what's going to be just the second game of the 2026-27 regular season, the San Francisco 49ers are taking on the Los Angeles Rams, who are not only the Niners' division rival, but odds-on favorites to win the Super Bowl. These two won't be facing off in California, though. Instead, they're headed down to Melbourne for some (non-Aussie rules) football.

Why you should watch it: Last year, these two perennial Super Bowl contenders split their regular-season matchups. The Niners took home a close overtime victory in October, and then got blown out in the return match in November. It's anyone's guess who will come out on top this time, though as a Niners fan, I know who I'm pulling for.

'Call My Agent! The Movie' (2026)

Genre: French comedy-drama movie

What it's about: "Call My Agent! The Movie" is set five years after the ASK Agency closed in "Call My Agent!," the series. Andréa (Camille Cottin) is now a director looking to make her feature debut, but just days before filming, she loses her lead actor. Now, she has to bring her ASK team back together to save the production.

Why you should watch it: "Call My Agent!" is probably the most beloved show to come out of France in years. Certainly one of the most beloved. I loved it, and I cannot wait to see more from that world, even if it's a feature film rather than a full season.

'Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?' (2026)

Genre: Comedy-drama movie

What it's about: In "Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?," Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White) summon their closest friends to Europe, 16 years after the events of "Why Did I Get Married?" This time, the wedding is their daughter Jasmine’s (Armani Greer), who is about to marry Wesley (Everett Osborne).

Why you should watch it: If you like Tyler Perry, this movie seems like it will be for you. Especially with the talented Taraji P. Henson joining the cast this time around. Perry's rarely my go-to filmmaker, but I'm fully aware he's got an ardent following. So if his movies are a must-watch for you, make sure to add this to your watchlist.

'Dang!' season 1

Genre: Animated adult comedy series

What it's about: “Dang!" centers around the Dang family: Ruthie (Stephanie Hsu), Andrew (Andrew Law) and Eunice (Poppy Liu). The latter two have been living fun, carefree lives in New York City. But it all comes to a screeching halt when their older sister, Ruthie, shows up and wants to hang out with them ... because she had an affair, got pregnant and is getting a divorce.

Why you should watch it: For a certain type of comedy fan, "Dang!" should be right up your alley. If you like "Big Mouth," "Mating Season," "Bojack Horseman," etc., then this animated adult comedy show from Michael Schur is a must-watch. If you're not typically one for animated shows, he's also the guy who produced "The Office" and co-created "Parks and Recreation", "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and The Good Place." So you're in good hands if you choose to watch "Dang!"

I have a soft spot for ’90s movies. There’s something about the films from this decade that makes them incredibly easy to return to, whether it’s a movie you watched constantly growing up or one you somehow missed the first time around. Thankfully, Netflix has a solid selection of ’90s favorites available to stream, giving you plenty of excuses to put your current watchlist on hold for a little while.

I’ve spent some time looking through Netflix’s current library to pick out five ’90s movies that are particularly worth your time. From classic crime thrillers to memorable comedies and tense dramas, this list has a little bit of everything. So, if you’re tired of scrolling and want something that comes with a heavy dose of nostalgia, here are five movies I’d happily recommend adding to your watchlist.

‘A League of Their Own’ (1992)

“A League of Their Own” is a beloved comedy-drama that remains one of the highest-grossing sports movies centered on women in cinema history. In fact, Penny Marshall became the first female director in Hollywood history to have two consecutive films cross $100 million at the box office, following “Big.” If you’re in need of a mood-booster packed with iconic one-liners, a charming cast and memorable screen chemistry, “A League of Their Own” deserves a spot on your watchlist.

Set in 1943, sisters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) are recruited to join the newly formed All-American Girls Professional Baseball League while many of the country’s male players are serving overseas during World War II. The sisters join the Rockford Peaches, a team filled with talented players from across the country, and are coached by Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), a former baseball star whose career has fallen apart. As the Peaches begin attracting crowds and attention, Dottie emerges as one of the league’s standout players, while Kit struggles to establish herself on the team.

‘Fargo’ (1996)

Anyone who thinks of a classic crime thriller is likely to think of “Fargo,” the neo-noir black comedy crime film written, produced, directed, and edited by Joel and Ethan Coen. Set against the snowy, desolate landscapes of Minnesota and North Dakota, the movie is widely regarded as one of the Coen brothers’ defining masterpieces. It’s so iconic that it inspired the critically acclaimed FX anthology series “Fargo,” which launched in 2014 and expands on the film’s signature dark humor and tone.

Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is a financially troubled car salesman who hires two criminals, Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare), to kidnap his wife and demand a ransom from her wealthy father. Jerry plans to keep much of the money for himself, but the scheme quickly spirals out of control when the kidnappers become involved in multiple murders. As the police investigate, pregnant Brainerd Police Chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) begins piecing together the clues and follows the trail back to Jerry and his increasingly chaotic plan.

‘Cruel Intentions’ (1999)

Another film that eventually received the TV adaptation treatment years later is “Cruel Intentions,” the stylish and provocative teen drama starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon. The movie actually serves as a late-1990s modern adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s famous 1782 French novel, but Roger Kumble reimagined the source material as an ultra-glamorous tale set among Manhattan’s upper-crust prep-school crowd. Safe to say, it’s proved its enduring cult status as one of the most memorable teen noir movies of its era.

Wealthy Manhattan step-siblings Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) and Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) are two popular students at an elite private school who enjoy manipulating those around them. When Kathryn challenges Sebastian to seduce Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), the daughter of their new headmaster, he eagerly accepts the bet. Meanwhile, Kathryn has her own scheme involving Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair), an innocent student whose relationship with Kathryn’s former boyfriend has left her seeking revenge.

‘Apollo 13’ (1995)

Of course, we had to include another Tom Hanks film on this list. “Apollo 13” is the critically acclaimed space docudrama based on the true story of the aborted 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission, which was forced into an emergency after a critical oxygen tank exploded. Much like the recent “Project Hail Mary,” “Apollo 13” avoided relying heavily on camera tricks or green screens, with much of the film shot aboard a specially modified aircraft that allowed the cast to experience brief bursts of true zero gravity. It’s a truly excellent drama, elevated by some incredible performances.

NASA astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) embark on what is supposed to be the third crewed mission to land on the Moon. Shortly after leaving Earth, an oxygen tank explodes aboard their spacecraft, severely damaging the vessel and forcing the crew to abandon their planned lunar landing. With their oxygen, electricity and other essential supplies rapidly running low, the astronauts must work with Mission Control to find a way back to Earth, but they're all racing against time.

‘Liar Liar’ (1997)

We’re ending this list with a comedy that still lifts my mood every time I rewatch it: “Liar Liar.” Directed by Tom Shadyac and produced by Brian Grazer, it marked the second hit collaboration between Shadyac and star Jim Carrey, following their success with “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.” The movie grossed more than $302 million worldwide upon release, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 1997 and further cementing Carrey’s status as one of Hollywood’s most dependable box-office draws. Sometimes, all you need is a good laugh.

Fletcher Reede (Jim Carrey) is a successful Los Angeles lawyer whose career depends on his ability to bend the truth. After repeatedly disappointing his young son Max (Justin Cooper), Fletcher misses his birthday party, prompting Max to make a wish that his dad cannot lie for an entire day. The wish unexpectedly comes true, leaving Fletcher physically unable to tell a lie. His new predicament arrives at the worst possible time, as he has an important divorce case to win and a promotion at his law firm on the line.

This week, we’ve handed out report cards for the platforms in our best streaming services guide: Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney+/Hulu, Paramount+, Apple TV and Peacock.

The Tom’s Guide streaming team uses these platforms every day to recommend the latest movies and TV shows on each to our readers. Our goal with these report cards was to grade each over the past 12 months in key areas including price, library, originals, live content and more.

Now that each has received its report card and overall grade, there’s only one thing left to do: compare the results and determine which streaming service is most worthy of your monthly subscription in 2026.

Pricing

*On August 29, Apple TV announced its latest price hike, increasing a monthly subscription to $14.99. Our report card grade is based on its previous $12.99 price.

The cost of streaming has become a major talking point recently. We held a Tom’s Guide streaming survey in June, which found that more than 35% of respondents pay more than $60 each month on streaming. Wasn’t streaming supposed to be cheaper than cable?

Price hikes have been a regular occurrence. In fact, Apple TV increased its monthly cost (from $12.99 to $14.99) just as we began publishing our report cards. But it’s far from alone; in the past 12 months, every single streaming service we graded has increased prices.

As of now, barring any more sudden hikes, the cheapest tier is found on Peacock. Its Select plan costs just $7.99 but comes with some major caveats like no sports, movies, or originals. The most expensive is, perhaps predictably, Netflix’s Premium tier at $26.99 per month.

The highest scorers in this category were Prime Video, largely because most people get it as part of an Amazon Prime membership, and Disney+/Hulu, which offers the most choice (either separate or bundled), with two robust services for $12.99, or $19.99 without ads.

Also, a quick shoutout to Apple TV. Yes, it’s just increased its price, but we appreciate that it offers a single tier, so there’s no confusion about what you have access to. It’s just one cost for everything Apple TV has to offer, which feels refreshing compared to its streaming rivals.

Library

Our library category takes a bird's-eye view of everything found on each streaming service. That’s movies and shows, including both licensed content and original efforts. Next to price, this is arguably the key category for most people to consider when signing up for a streaming platform.

HBO came out on top because it offers a selection of world-class television and blockbuster movies via Warner Bros and A24. Disney+/Hulu was also in the running. After all, the combo of two bundled services is hard to beat. Disney+ covers the family (and Marvel/Star Wars nerds), and Hulu has plenty for adults. It’s a platform that really has something for everybody.

Netflix’s library is solid, but it has lost so much licensed content over the years as seemingly every media conglomerate has launched its own rival platform. Apple TV has great originals, but lacks much else. And while Prime Video has quantity down, its library is overstuffed with the sorts of movies that you would have previously seen in the $1 DVD bin at Walmart.

Paramount+ lacks major movie franchises, and beyond “Yellowstone,” few new TV shows that generate much buzz, and Peacock has NBCUniversal's vault to draw from. This is a rich well with beloved sitcoms like “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “30 Rock.” Plus, it gets Universal movies, so as long as you don’t mind the Minions, that’s another advantage.

Originals

Originals are a big part of what keeps you subscribed to a streaming service long-term. If a platform isn’t adding a consistent stream of stuff you want to watch, why stick around?

Netflix dominates this field, releasing more originals than its rivals, and producing shows that catch the zeitgeist, like “Stranger Things,” “Squid Game” and “Wednesday.” But it receives the lowest grade here, with the average quality level often being very poor over the past 12 months. Netflix original movies have a deserved reputation for being mostly skippable.

HBO Max and Apple TV are the two standouts; both deliver some of the finest original television shows around. HBO is known for regularly dropping essential series, but Apple TV is really giving it some competition, and its commitment to variety hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Disney+ ensures Marvel and Star Wars fans are never lacking for anything to watch between theatrical releases, but Hulu deserves some recognition as well, for originals like “Alien: Earth,” “Only Murders in the Building” season 5, “The Shards,” and “Paradise” season 2 over the past year.

Prime Video is also starting to find a niche in buzzy teen dramas like "Off Campus," "The Summer I Turned Pretty," and “Sterling Point.” Meanwhile, Peacock is basically a required subscription for anybody who takes reality TV seriously. After all, it is the streaming home of “The Traitors.” Finally, Paramount+ has had a poor 12 months, unless you’re a “South Park” fan.

Interface

To be frank, every streaming service has an interface that is only tolerable at best. There’s a reason the highest grade we awarded in this category was Apple TV with a passable B. Each has quirks and annoyances that you have to deal with. There’s no truly great interface out there.

They pretty much all take the same fundamental form, rows of movies/shows presented in a “tile” format, so there’s not a huge degree of difference between them. It really comes down to the individual pain points of each platform, because some are easier to tolerate than others

Prime Video and Paramount+ ranked last. Amazon’s streamer is disorganized and presents you with PVOD content and add-on channel packages that you have to purchase separately. There’s nothing worse than seeing a movie you really want to watch on Prime Video, only to be frustrated when you discover it’s not on Prime Video and must be rented.

Paramount+ is similarly unintuitive to navigate, and, if I can offer a personal anecdote, I’ve faced a persistent problem with the mobile app. The season select button doesn’t work. So, I can watch season 1 of a show or nothing. And a quick web search tells me others have faced the same problem.

Also, and this goes for all the streaming services graded, we’re in an era where A.I. is getting ever smarter (and probably coming for our jobs), yet none of these platforms can implement a recommendation algorithm that reliably surfaces content similar to what you’ve watched. Do better!

Live Content

Live content is an area that most major streaming services are rapidly expanding. It makes sense. For millions, live content (typically live sports) is the only reason they still watch traditional broadcast television, so it’s an area that holds plenty of value for viewers.

Looking at the past 12 months, Peacock wins in the live sports arena by a landslide. It was the home of the 2026 Winter Olympics and had Spanish-language broadcasts of the recent World Cup 2026. Beyond these special events (Which only come around every four years), it’s home to Sunday Night Football, NBA and WNBA games, and Premier League soccer.

Prime Video has been making impressive moves in this area with Thursday Night Football and NBA and WNBA games. Netflix is making similar waves with “WWE Raw,” select NFL games, boxing and its first-ever live MLB events in 2026. Apple TV isn’t getting left behind with MLS a major part of the service, and most importantly, comprehensive Formula 1 coverage.

HBO Max has 72 regular-season NHL games per year and the Stanley Cup Final, but no NFL or NBA (WB’s deal with the NBA concluded after the 2024-25 season), which hurts its grade. While Disney+/Hulu blocks most of its sports behind an ESPN-shaped paywall.

The other big winner here is Paramount+, which competes with Peacock, thanks to the NFL, UFC, UEFA Champions League, Serie A, Carabao Cup and even some college football. If you have Paramount+ Premium, you also get some PGA Tour events and WNBA games.

Outside of sports, Hulu has the annual Academy Awards (but even as an Oscar nut, I know this is hardly a major draw), and Netflix has experimented with special broadcasts, such as “Skyscraper Live” back in January. These are nice extras, but for most subscribers, when we talk about live content, it’s all about sports, sports, sports.

Note: This is just an evaluation of the live programming on offer in the U.S. Live programming varies by market.

Overall Grades

If you can only subscribe to one streaming service in 2026, we’d suggest HBO Max. While it didn’t receive the highest grade in every single category, overall it offers a practically unrivaled library, several original shows worth sticking around for, and a few live sporting events of note.

Netflix will presumably always be the most popular choice, and it scores respectable, even if its original movie output is disappointing.

Disney+/Hulu offers great value, and a breadth of content that will keep the whole family entertained. Apple TV puts quality over quantity, and there’s merit in that approach. Peacock is often neglected but might be worth considering, though its grade this time is significantly helped by major events (Olympics/World Cup) that aren’t annual.

Paramount+ and Prime Video round out the report card, two services that have plus points, but just as many caveats. Hopefully, over the next 12 months, they can beef up their original lineup and come back swinging, ready to take on the pack we’ve graded above them in 2027.

Overall, there is no perfect streaming service. Each platform has its strengths and areas for improvement. Subscribing to 2-3 is perhaps the best way to get most of what appeals to you. However, returning to our survey results, nearly 30% of respondents subscribe to 7 or more platforms, which definitely seems excessive. My advice: you should cancel a few.

We’re already beginning to evaluate each of these streaming services for our next series of streaming service report cards in 2027, so watch this space; the winners and losers could change.

Another weekend is here, and the best streaming services are serving up plenty of new movies to keep us glued to the couch. But with so many to chose from, narrowing down which ones are actually worth your time can turn into a chore.

That's where I come in. I'm here every weekend combing through the Netflix top 10 to help you skip the scrolling and get to streaming. Because who wants to waste their precious streaming time with an overhyped dud?

This week, the movies that made the cut include a twisty psychological drama where you never quite know whom to trust, a Spanish crime thriller, and a tongue-in-cheek workplace comedy featuring Dolly Parton's breakout role.

'The Secret Woman' (2026)

Netflix subscribers and thrillers go together like peanut butter and jelly, so I'm not surprised to see "The Secret Woman" stick around in the top 10 for a second week in a row. The new Danish psychological thriller pulled in over 11 million views in just three days. Adapted from the 2017 novel of the same name by Anna Ekberg, it stars Natalie Madueño as Louise, a doting wife living a quiet life on a Norwegian island with her partner, Joachim (Pål Sverre Hagen).

That is, until a stranger shatters her world, revealing she's actually Helene Söderberg, a Danish woman who disappeared three years earlier. A DNA test confirms this, and Louise discovers she has a husband (Claes Bang), a young son, and a wealthy family she has no memory of. She returns to Denmark to learn about her life before the disappearance, but as fragments of her past begin to come to light, she begins to suspect her picture-perfect former life was anything but.

'Facing El Chapo' (2026)

This Spanish-language crime thriller is holding strong in the top 10 for the third weekend in a row, though it's been bumped from the top spot all the way down to #8. Based on a true story, "Facing El Chapo" stars Noé Hernández and Alfonso Herrera as a pair of cops on a routine traffic stop that changes their live forever when the realize the car they pulled over belongs to cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, one of the world's most dangerous criminal.

Now they just have to survive bringing him in, a tall order given his sprawling network of connections. "Facing El Chapo" is a must-watch for fans of "Sicario" or "Narcos," with plenty of nail-biting action and twists to keep you entertained.

'9 to 5' (1980)

Dolly Parton's passing left a mighty big hole in all our hearts, and Netflix subscribers are remembering the iconic country singer by pouring themselves a cup of ambition and revisiting her breakout movie role "9 to 5." This tongue-in-cheek workplace comedy follows three clever and charming women (Parton, Lilly Tomlin, and Jane Fonda) who turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical manchild of a boss (Dabney Coleman).

Their revenge fantasies become reality when they believe they've accidentally poisoned their boss's coffee. There's plenty of screwball hijinks, from a trippy fantasy sequence after the women get high to slapstick around stealing a corpse, but it's the gravitas of Parton and her co-stars (plus the inimitable Sterling Hayden) that really make it stand out as a cult classic.

Every month, Netflix adds plenty of movies to its library, ranging from enduring classics to modern favorites. There’s always something “new” to watch on the streaming service.

In September 2026, Netflix is adding 52 movies. 40 flicks arrived on the first day of the month, and the rest will be dished out periodically throughout September. That’s a lot to digest. So, I’ve turned to review site Rotten Tomatoes to put together a ranking of the five movies added to Netflix this month with the highest critics' score.

Granted, a high score doesn’t guarantee a movie will appeal to your personal tastes (opinions will differ), but it’s still a useful indicator.

Before presenting this month’s ranking, I should note that Netflix originals that haven’t released yet are excluded; obviously, they don’t have an RT score yet, and in the event of a tie, I’ve used the viewer’s rating to break the deadlock. Now that’s cleared up, here are the 5 movies added to Netflix in September 2026 with the highest scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Straight Outta Compton’ (2015)

Musical biopics continue to top the box office charts (“Michael” grossed more than $1 billion earlier this year), and “Straight Outta Compton” is one of the finest in the genre. It chronicles the groundbreaking rap group N.W.A. This insight into the quintet is engaging, triumphant, occasionally heartbreaking and particularly inspiring. I’m not even a hip-hop music fan, and yet I found myself captivated by this look into a group that changed the scene.

Kicking off in 1980s Los Angeles, Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson Jr.), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins), Easy-E (Jason Mitchell), DJ Yella (Neil Brown Jr.) and MC Ren (Aldis Hodge) form the rap group N.W.A . Their music pulls no punches, and their first record, titled “Straight Outta Compton,” puts them on the map, and then some. But as their popularity grows, fame, fortune, and legacy put a heavy burden on the band and on their friendships.

‘Phantom Thread’ (2017)

Paul Thomas Anderson earned his long-deserved Best Director Oscar earlier this year for his awards-dominating “One Battle After Another.” But true film fans know he's been making masterpieces for almost his entire career, including 2017’s achingly romantic “Phantom Thread.” Anderson teams with previous collaborator Daniel Day-Lewis, and when the duo works together, they always seem to strike gold. “Phantom Thread” is another true gem.

Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) is a renowned dressmaker in 1950s London. Known for his peerless work, he’s dressed anybody who’s anybody in high society, from royalty to movie stars of the era. Intensely committed to his craft, he’s not so invested in relationships, preferring short flings over finding deep connections. However, when a young waitress, Alma (Vicky Krieps), becomes his latest muse, his perfectly fitted life is disrupted by true love.

‘Aliens’ (1986)

“Aliens” might be the perfect sequel. Next to “The Godfather Part II” and perhaps “Toy Story 2,” there are few follow-ups that many fans actually hold above the original. James Cameron followed up 1979’s “Alien” (which we’ll discuss shortly) with a guns-blazing sequel that swaps the claustrophobic scares of its predecessor for pure ‘80s machismo, and it’s glorious. “Aliens” is one of the best action movies ever…even if I do prefer “Alien” (fight me).

Post her first encounter with a terrifying Xenomorph, Ellen Ripley has been drifting in space for more than 55 years. Picked up by a salvage crew, she soon finds herself returning to the planet LV-426, where the nightmare started. The planet is now home to a Weyland-Yutani colony, but when the inhabitants stop responding, Ripley and a crew of Colonial Marines are dispatched to assist. Once there, they find not just a single Xeno, but a whole hive of them.

‘Alien’ (1979)

“Alien” is my personal favorite movie of all time, and while many franchise fans will make the case for “Aliens” superiority, for me, the original always wins out. It’s one of the most effective sci-fi horrors ever made, with well-written characters, smart world-building, and a creature design that has become iconic for good reason. Even after dozens of rewatches, its most terrifying moments still send a shiver down my spine. It’s an unequivocal masterpiece.

Directed by Ridley Scott, “Alien” sees the crew of the commercial vessel Nostromo respond to a distress signal on an isolated planet. While investigating, one of the crew is attacked by an alien parasite, and the situation only becomes darker from there. Introducing the world to Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley and the iconic Xenomorph, “Alien” is a critically acclaimed sci-fi horror that spawned a blockbuster franchise.

‘Jaws’ (1975)

The highest-rated movie being added to Netflix this month is “Jaws,” and this influential shark thriller is certainly good value for its 97% score. If anything, I’m actually surprised it’s not even higher. Steven Spielberg’s 1975 effort became the highest-grossing movie of all time upon its release (“Star Wars” would dethrone it two years later). It resulted in the term “blockbuster” entering the common lexicon as people lined up around the block to see it.

Set in the New England town of Amity Island, the annual Fourth of July festivities are nearing, with tourists flooding the picturesque location. However, all is not well on the beaches, as there’s a great white shark in the water. With the mayor (Murray Hamilton) refusing to close the tourist-packed beaches, a trio (Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss) take to the seas to hunt down the man-eating shark.

The vibe: A cross between an '80s action movie and buddy comedy back in the U.S.S.R

Why you should watch it: "Mayday" is a solid spy caper that cashes in on nostalgia for glossy '80s action flicks. Set in 1987, it stars Ryan Reynolds as a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot whose flying high since the blockbuster success of "Top Gun." That is, until he gets shot down and stranded in the Russian wilderness during a top-secret Cold War mission over Soviet territory. To have any hope of getting home in one piece, he has to team up with Kenneth Branagh's gruff ex-KGB agent with a soft spot for American culture.

'Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu' (Disney+)

The vibe: More shenanigans with the galaxy's dreamiest bounty hunter and his pint-sized companion

Why you should watch it: If you ask me, this is where "The Mandalorian and Grogu" should have premiered instead of in theaters. It feels like a mini "Mandalorian" marathon retrofitted to the big screen, which might explain why it was the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie in history. Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu take on a mission for the New Republic to rescue Rotta the Hutt (voiced by "The Bear's" Jeremy Allen White), Jabba's heir, from a rival crime syndicate to dig up some intel on an Imperial warlord. Their assignment spirals into a galaxy-spanning adventure filled with all the blaster fights and Force magic you'd expect of a Star Wars outing.

‘LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian’ (Disney+)

The vibe: Even more Mando and Grogu shenanigans (this time with LEGO!)

Why you should watch it: The LEGO video game and movie adaptations should be blatant cash grabs, but the goofy sense of humor and genuine artistry (you can tell the animators had fun!) always manage to steal my heart nonetheless. This animated special covers the entire three-season saga of "The Mandalorian," featuring a returning voice cast that includes Amy Sedaris, Rosario Dawson, Timothy Olyphant and Katee Sackhoff. And of course, plenty of LEGO Baby Yoda cuteness to melt your heart.

‘The Robot Chicken Adult Swim Special’ (HBO Max)

The vibe: A nostalgia flashbang of Adult Swim's biggest shows (and the ones we all forgot about)

Why you should watch it: If, like me, you spent your formative years staying up way to late watching "Adult Swim," this 25th anniversary special is for you. In the trailer alone, I counted like five shows I haven't thought about in years — and some, like "Assy McGee," that should have stayed forgotten. Adult Swim's weirdest characters over the years from shows like "The Venture Bros.," "Smiling Friends," and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" all meet up on a cruise to celebrate the occasion, brought to life through claymation a la "Robot Chicken." It all culminates in a comedic whodunit that eventually lands in court, and you know Harvey Birdman's prepared to take the case.

'Smile 2' (Netflix)

The vibe: A shockingly good sequel to get you into the Halloween spirit (don't worry, you don't need to see the first to follow along)

Why you should watch it: Naomi Scott stars as pop star Skye Riley, who's finally setting out on a world tour after a difficult year. Her comeback's thrown off course when she witnesses a horrifying death and starts to experience increasingly disturbing encounters with people who seem to be smiling at her. With her mental health in tatters, she struggles to figure out what's real and what's all in her head. With her tour approaching, Skye seeks help from an emergency-room nurse who seems like the only person who understands what she’s going through — and better yet, might have the key to make it stop.

'The Gentlemen'

Theo James is back as Eddie Horniman in this high-stakes second installment of Guy Ritchie's action-comedy series, only now, he's a lot less reluctant about his newfound status as a criminal power player.

This time around, he's working alongside Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) to expand their growing weed empire into a new territory—Italy—which brings them into dangerous contact with ruthless Italian crime boss Marco Moretti (Sergio Castellitto) and his mercurial fixer Cico Maldini (Michele Morrone).

Along with those aforementioned addictions, new cast members joining the crime-world chaos for season two include Hugh Bonneville, Benedetta Porcaroli, Benjamin Clementine and Maya Jama. A third season has already been greenlit, so catch up now if you haven't already!

'Earle Meets World'

If you've even dabbled in the world of video podcasts and TikTok clips, then you've likely come across Alix Earle (not to be confused with her frenemy and fellow social-media star Alex Cooper), the media personality known for her "Get Ready with Me" TikTok videos and "Get Real with Me" spinoff series on YouTube.

And now you can get to know the creator behind all that content better with this new eight-episode unscripted reality series, which follows Earle as she balances her burgeoning business empire and growing public scrutiny with her chaotic personal life. That means a look into the star's blended family (with appearances by her sister Ashtin, dad TJ, stepmom Ashley and her younger half-siblings) as well as her public breakup with athlete Braxton Berrios.

‘The Sex Lives of College Girls'

If you missed this raunchy college-campus comedy during its original run on HBO Max, you can catch up with "The Sex Live of College Girls" on Netflix as of August 31. (The bawdy-yet-sweet teen dramedy, which was co-created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, aired for three seasons from November 2021 to November 2024.)

Set at Essex College, a prestigious (albeit fictional) university in New England, the series follows the lives of four mismatched freshmen roommates—Kimberly Finkle (Pauline Chalamet), Bela Malhotra (Amrit Kaur), Whitney Chase (Alyah Chanelle Scott), and Leighton Murray (Reneé Rapp)—as they navigate the newfound freedoms and unexpected struggles of coed life and young adulthood. And yes, as the title suggests, that means plenty of hilariously awkward attempts at getting some.

‘The Secret Woman’ (2026)

I’ll always have time for a good Netflix thriller, and “The Secret Woman” is another reminder that some of the streamer’s best surprises can come from outside the English-language library. The new Danish psychological thriller has already become one of this week’s most-watched movies, pulling in 11.4 million views in just three days. It’s adapted from the 2017 novel of the same name by Anna Ekberg, which centers around amnesia and family deception, leaning heavily into the psychological tension.

Louise Andersen (Natalie Madueño) is living a quiet life on a Norwegian island with her partner, Joachim (Pål Sverre Hagen), when a stranger suddenly claims she is actually Helene Söderberg, a Danish woman who disappeared three years earlier. A DNA test confirms his story, revealing that Louise has a husband, a young son and a wealthy family she has no memory of. She returns to Denmark to uncover what happened before her disappearance, but as fragments of her past begin resurfacing, she discovers that her seemingly perfect former life was hiding some disturbing secrets.

‘Alien’ (1979)

I was super excited when I found out Netflix was getting both “Alien” and “Aliens.” It’s a pretty tough call when deciding which film is better, but I’ve always said that “Alien” holds the top spot for me in the franchise. This sci-fi horror is not only a masterpiece but my favorite film of all time. Directed by Ridley Scott, it’s one of the most influential genre films in cinema history, especially within the sci-fi space, with Swiss surrealist artist H.R. Giger creating what I consider to be the best creature design ever: the Xenomorph. I could talk about this movie for days, so add it to your watchlist before I do.

The commercial spaceship Nostromo is returning to Earth when its crew is awakened from cryosleep after receiving a mysterious transmission from an unexplored planet. They are ordered to investigate, leading them to a strange abandoned spacecraft containing hundreds of unusual eggs. When one of the crew members encounters one of the eggs, a creature attaches itself to his face. After the crew brings him back aboard the Nostromo, they soon discover that the organism has survived and is growing rapidly.

‘Smile 2’ (2024)

The beginning of September marks the start of spooky season for me, and even though I watch horror all year round, I’m even more eager to expand my spooky watchlist. “Smile 2” is the perfect movie for getting into the Halloween spirit. It serves as a direct sequel to Parker Finn’s 2022 breakout hit “Smile,” expanding the original film’s mythology into the world of global pop stardom. This is certainly an escalation from the original, largely thanks to Naomi Scott’s incredible performance, and I guarantee it’ll leave you holding your breath in pure shock.

Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) is a hugely successful pop star preparing to embark on a world tour after a difficult year. Shortly before her comeback, Skye witnesses a horrifying death and begins experiencing increasingly disturbing encounters with people who appear to be smiling at her. As these terrifying incidents become more frequent, she struggles to determine what is real and what is happening inside her mind. With her tour approaching, Skye seeks help from an emergency-room nurse who claims to understand what she’s experiencing.

It’s no exaggeration to say that “Jaws” changed the landscape of cinema. This ‘70s thriller from director Steven Spielberg is the prototypical “blockbuster” due to its popularity, which led people to literally line up around the block just to score a ticket (I guess “the ticket wars” aren’t just a modern phenomenon). It celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, and in all those decades, its popularity, appeal and influence haven’t waned at all.

Set in the New England town of Amity Island, the annual Fourth of July festivities are nearing, with tourists flooding the picturesque location. However, all is not well on the beaches of Amity Island as there’s a great white shark in the water. ‘Cruel Intentions’ (1999)

A lot of time and money have been spent trying to recapture the magic of “Cruel Intentions.” There’s a sequel and a prequel film, a TV series, and even an Off-Broadway musical. None have been able to replicate the same late-’90s kitsch that made this teen romantic-thriller such a cult classic. But then again, when you have Sarah Michelle Gellar, Selma Blair and Reese Witherspoon at their peak, that’s a hard concoction to replicate.

The movie centers on a bet between step-siblings Kathryn (Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe), two ultra-wealthy teens running amok in New York’s upper social circles. Sebastian agrees to a wager with Kathryn that he can seduce the headmaster’s puritanical daughter, Annette (Witherspoon), with his treasured Jaguar XK140 as the prize. But Annette’s honest nature soon wins the playboy’s heart, complicating matters. Darkly comedic and packed with sordid melodrama (some of which hasn’t aged very well), “Cruel Intentions” is a wicked good time.

‘Scarface’ (1983)

I have an inkling that many Netflix subscribers will be in the mood to watch “Scarface” in the weeks ahead. The big red streamer recently premiered a special GTA 6 presentation, and thanks to the game’s Vice City setting (a stand-in for Miami), anybody feeling the GTA hype will swarm to “Scarface,” which chronicles an epic crime saga in the sun-soaked Florida metropolis. Starring Al Pacino, it remains a truly iconic crime-thriller.

Directed by Brian De Palma, “Scarface” opens with Cuban immigrant Tony Montana (Pacino) arriving in Miami alongside his friend, Manny (Steven Bauer). Looking to carve out his own slice of the American dream, Tony begins to build a large drug empire. But as his power increases, so does his list of enemies. As he becomes increasingly paranoid and consumed by ego, Tony’s downfall could prove to be even swifter than his rapid rise.

From huge hits like “Stranger Things” and “Wednesday” to its steady stream of new movies, there’s rarely a shortage of something to watch.

But popularity doesn’t automatically mean value. That’s why the Tom’s Guide streaming team is grading the biggest streaming services across the things that really matter, including price, library, originals, interface and live content. The goal is to get beneath the headlines and work out which services are actually worth your time and money.

Today, we’re turning our attention to Netflix to see whether the world’s biggest streaming service still deserves a place near the top, or whether the competition has started to catch up.

Pricing

Netflix’s pricing is fairly straightforward, with Standard with ads at $8.99/month, Standard at $19.99/month and Premium at $26.99/month. The cheapest tier is tempting if you just want access to Netflix’s library, but the ad-free Standard plan is where things get expensive (like, a huge jump).

At $19.99, it’s marginally more expensive than HBO Max’s $18.49 Standard plan, while Prime Video remains a particularly strong value when bundled with an Amazon Prime membership (only $14.99/month). That makes the $8.99 Standard with ads plan our pick for the best value, assuming you can live with ad breaks. It gives you access to Netflix’s full library, two simultaneous streams and downloads on two devices, while still keeping the monthly cost below most of its major rivals.

If you absolutely hate ads, Standard is the more sensible upgrade, but at nearly $20 a month, Netflix starts to feel like a service you need to use regularly to justify the expense. But if you’re using the service every day, it’s much harder to argue with the price, especially when you’re getting a steady stream of movies and shows to watch every week.

Grade: B-

Library

Netflix may not have quite as many titles as the likes of Prime Video, but it arguably has one of the most reliable libraries when it comes to keeping things fresh. New movies and shows arrive throughout the week. That steady rotation means you’re unlikely to find yourself endlessly scrolling through the same old titles, particularly with Netflix originals sitting alongside the licensed movies and shows that make their way around the streaming services.

It’s also particularly good at timing its library around what people are actually watching. As Halloween approaches, for example, Netflix will be adding horror titles including “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Ready or Not,” while September will bring the “Resident Evil” movie collection and “Alien.” That kind of seasonal refresh makes the service feel relevant throughout the year.

However, while Netflix’s library is constantly growing, its originals are much more hit or miss. Its original movies in particular remain a weak point, which takes some of the shine off an otherwise dependable library. I’ll get into that more below.

Grade: B

Originals

There’s no denying Netflix has delivered some excellent original shows over the past 12 months. “His & Hers,” “I Will Find You,” “Bridgerton” season 4, “Stranger Things” season 5 and “Wednesday” season 2 are some of the obvious standouts, proving the streamer still knows how to create shows that get people talking.

There’s usually something new to look forward to, too, whether that’s a returning favorite or a fresh spinoff, with “The Gentlemen,” “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85” and the “Monster” anthology series all getting new seasons this year.

Netflix’s biggest strength is undoubtedly its roster of original shows, but unfortunately, its grade slips dramatically when movies enter the picture. Original films have never been Netflix’s strongest suit, and the past 12 months have only reinforced that for me. “The Woman in Cabin 10,” “The Last House,” “72 Hours” and “Office Romance” are particularly weak examples, and it’s gotten to the point where I rarely feel genuinely excited when a new Netflix movie is announced.

That’s not the case with its shows, where I’m still immediately interested in seeing what Netflix has coming next. For that reason, despite its frustrating movie output, Netflix still scrapes a pass for original content.

Grade: C-

Interface

Netflix’s interface has remained one of its biggest strengths, although the past year has brought some changes I’m not entirely sold on. The service is still incredibly easy to navigate, with personalized rows, clear categories and a strong recommendation system that usually does a decent job of putting something watchable in front of you.

Netflix has also rolled out a redesigned TV experience, moving shortcuts for shows, movies, games and profiles to the top of the screen, while introducing a dedicated watchlist, “Continue Watching” and other saved content.

However, I’m not convinced every change has been for the better. Netflix removed the familiar Netflix Original badge from titles in late 2025, which is a surprisingly annoying change if, like me, you sometimes browse for Netflix originals. You now have to click into a title to work out whether it’s actually a Netflix production, rather than spotting the little red logo at a glance.

The interface is still polished and generally intuitive, but some of Netflix’s recent tinkering has made finding exactly what you want feel a little less effortless.

Grade: B-

Live content

Netflix has made a serious push into live content over the past 12 months, and it’s becoming a much more compelling option if you enjoy watching events as they happen. “WWE Raw” continues to stream live every week, while Netflix has expanded its sports offering with NFL games, boxing and its first-ever live MLB events. In 2026 alone, that has included “MLB Opening Night” between the Yankees and Giants, the “T-Mobile Home Run Derby” and “MLB at Field of Dreams.”

The variety is arguably Netflix’s biggest strength here. It’s not just sports, either, with the streamer also offering live comedy, awards shows and other entertainment events, all included with every Netflix plan.

However, if you’re looking for Netflix to replace a traditional live TV service, you might be disappointed. Its live lineup is still built around big, occasional events rather than a huge selection of channels, so it won’t compete with dedicated live TV services for breadth.

Still, Netflix is clearly taking live programming more seriously, and the addition of MLB alongside its growing NFL and WWE presence makes it increasingly valuable for sports fans. That’s enough to earn a B: not quite a live TV replacement, but a very welcome bonus for Netflix subscribers.

Overall grade: B-

So, where does Netflix stand after another year of streaming? Pretty well, but not quite at the top of our report card. Its huge and constantly refreshed library, strong roster of original shows and growing live offering make it an easy service to recommend, but its original movies and increasingly expensive ad-free tiers hold it back.

Our grade feels fair: Netflix remains a streaming essential for many households, particularly if you watch it regularly, but it’s no longer an automatic winner. If you’re already subscribed, there’s plenty here to keep you coming back. If you’re considering adding another service, though, there are now cheaper and arguably better options, like HBO Max.

Netflix just added 41 new movies and shows to kick off September 2026. The first day of the month is typically a big one for the streaming service. It's when Netflix adds most of the classic library titles (aka non-originals) to its catalogue. This month was no exception.

However, 41 new films and series are a lot to sort through in a single day. So I wouldn't blame you if you didn't know where to start. Lucky for you, I've already looked through everything new on Netflix in September, and I have five movies and shows worth adding to your watchlist today.

First up, I'm going with a trio of excellent movies. "Alien" is a film that needs no introduction, but is a must-watch whether you've seen it or not. Same goes for "Jaws," Stephen Spielberg's shark thriller masterpiece. But Paul Thomas Anderson's "Phantom Thread" probably isn't too far behind these in the ranking of great films, and Daniel Day-Lewis's performance was rightfully Oscar-nominated.

But it's not just older movies being added today. "Jared Fried: The Family Plan" is a brand-new comedy special for those in need of a laugh. For those who prefer something more scandalous, "Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly" is a new Netflix documentary that dives into one of the most controversial performances in Summer Olympics history.

So let's dive into the five newly added to Netflix movies and shows that you need to be streaming right now.

5 Netflix movies to stream right now

'Alien' (1979)

Genre: Sci-fi horror movie

What it's about: Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and the crew of the Nostromo are headed back to Earth after decades in space. But before they can get there, they come across a derelict spaceship with a very deadly cargo.

Why you should watch it: "Alien" has a reputation for being an action movie franchise thanks to its sequel "Aliens" and the "Alien vs. Predator" crossover films. But those who have seen the original know this is a pure horror film. Nobody can hear you scream in space, but they'll definitely hear you scream from the couch during this movie's jump scares.

'Jaws' (1975)

Genre: Thriller movie

What's it about? "Jaws" is set in the small New England beach town of Amity Island. But this small town has a big problem: a massive shark is killing the beachgoers. To get to the bottom of these killings, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) teams up with an unlikely pairing of marine biologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled seaman Quint (Robert Shaw). But they may be no match for this behemoth with razor-sharp teeth.

Why you should watch it: "Jaws" might not be quite as scary as "Alien," but it's just as much a masterpiece. It also similarly toys with you for most of the movie before finally revealing its monster. If you've never seen it before, watch it right now. If you have, go watch it anyway.

'Phantom Thread' (2017)

Genre: Psychological period drama movie

What it's about: Set in 1950s England, "Phantom Thread" centers around Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis). An eccentric fashion designer, he strikes up an unlikely courtship one day with Alma (Vicky Krieps), a waitress he meets at a restaurant. This new love quickly devolves into a toxic relationship, though, in more ways than one.

Why you should watch it: Where this ranks in the pantheon of Paul Thomas Anderson's films is a matter of debate. But what isn't debatable is how incredible Daniel Day-Lewis's transformation is. Don't go into this expecting "One Battle After Another," but do go into it expecting another great PTA movie.

'Jared Freid: The Family Plan'

Genre: Stand-up comedy special

What it's about: Jared Freid is a multi-hyphenate: comedian, television host and podcaster. Today, he's back on Netflix with his second special for the streaming service. In "Jared Freid: The Family Plan," expect topics that are family-oriented, even if they're not always family-friendly.

Why you should watch it: I'm not familiar with Freid, but I loved this. It's filmed like a gripping documentary expose, cutting between sit-down testimonials and clips of Fried's stand-up filmed in front of an audience. Check this out if you're looking for a laugh today.

'Untold Raygun: Breaking Badly' (2026)

Genre: Documentary movie

What's it about: Before Aug. 9, 2024, Dr. Rachel Gunn, aka "Raygun," was, to most people, an academic. Or, more likely, a person you had never heard of before. But after her performance in the Breaking competition at the Paris Summer Olympics, the entire world knew who she was: the worst competitor in the history of the event.

Why you should watch it: Raygun's story is complicated. On the one hand, she was qualified to participate. She won the Oceania Breaking Championships in 2023. But her performance in Paris was so bizarre that it led to outrage from some at her perceived mockery of breaking to outright conspiracy theories (quickly debunked) from others about her husband manipulating her selection into the Olympic Games. This documentary features both Raygun and her husband, so if you want the full story, this is going to be a must-watch.

‘Death of the Pastor’s Wife’

True crime documentaries have long been a hit on Netflix, regularly finding their way onto the platform’s most-watched list. That’s been proven once again this week, with Netflix’s latest No. 1 show being a chilling new doc. Directed by Mike Gasparro and Julia Willoughby Nason, “Death of the Pastor’s Wife” is a 180-minute series that delves into the tragedy surrounding 30-year-old Mica Miller. This is a heavy, frustrating, and deeply disturbing documentary that aims to piece together what really happened.

Mica Miller was a young worship leader whose life changed after she became involved with John-Paul “JP” Miller, the pastor of her family’s church. The pair began a secret relationship that eventually led to marriage, but their relationship deteriorated over the years. In 2024, Mica filed for divorce before she was found dead at a North Carolina state park, with her death officially ruled a suicide. The series retraces the events leading up to her death through interviews, personal journals, text messages, home videos and police records.

‘Leanne’

One of the recent returning shows is “Leanne,” a breakout Netflix comedy created by stand-up comedian Leanne Morgan, sitcom veteran Chuck Lorre, and showrunner Susan McMartin. Unlike many modern streaming comedies that favor single-camera, dramedy-style formats, “Leanne” is filmed in front of a live studio audience on the Warner Bros. lot. It has the nostalgic feel of traditional ‘90s and 2000s network sitcoms, complete with multi-cam jokes, a laugh track, and plenty of fast-paced situational humor.

Season 2 picks up with Leanne (Leanne Morgan) continuing to navigate life after her divorce from Bill (Ryan Stiles). She is now dating FBI agent Andrew (Tim Daly) while also dealing with her parents moving in after a house fire leaves them needing somewhere to stay. Her sister Carol (Kristen Johnston) remains close by as Leanne adjusts to turning 60 and becoming a grandmother. Across the season, Leanne’s relationships continue to change, including her connection with Andrew and her friendship with Bill.

‘Talamasca: The Secret Order’

“Talamasca: The Secret Order” is a dark, six-episode supernatural spy thriller set within AMC’s shared Anne Rice Immortal Universe. It marks the third TV series in the interconnected universe after “Interview with the Vampire” and “Mayfair Witches.” This show actually takes a unique approach, with showrunner John Lee Hancock developing an entirely original story inspired by the mysterious, shadow-dwelling organization that pops up across Rice’s fantasy books.

Guy Anatole (Nicholas Denton) is a young lawyer with the ability to read minds, who is recruited by a mysterious organization known as the Talamasca. The secretive group monitors vampires, witches, ghosts and other supernatural beings around the world. After joining, Guy is sent undercover to London to investigate a dangerous vampire who has taken control of the Talamasca’s headquarters. At the same time, Guy discovers that his mother, Anna (Simona Brown), whom he believed was dead, may still be alive.

This week’s slate of new movies across the best streaming services offers a strong mixture, with fresh arrivals on the most popular platforms including Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV and Paramount+. Whatever your tastes, there’s (almost certainly) a movie for you.

Arguably the biggest new movie is the Disney+ debut of the latest “Star Wars” adventure, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” but I encourage you not to skip the “smaller” stuff like “Fuze,” an overlooked action-thriller with a neat twist heading over to HBO Max. Other top picks include an acclaimed drama on Netflix, an action-thriller on Prime Video and a buddy-cop adventure flick on Apple TV starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.

There are plenty of options this week, so to save you from spending your time scrolling through streaming service libraries, I’ve collected this week’s most noteworthy new movies below. Plus, we also have a guide to the top new TV shows this week.

‘I Want Your Sex’ (PVOD)

As the name implies, “I Want Your Sex” isn’t shy about its provocative intentions. Described as an “erotic comedy-thriller,” this movie explores BDSM practices, alongside dipping into an exploration of power dynamics and eventually murder. Director Gregg Araki is not above going for shock value. However, the filmmaker's first new feature in 12 years has the substance to back up its provocativeness, with critics rating it 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When Elliot (Cooper Hoffman) lands a coveted job as the assistant for a renowned artist, Erika Tracy (Olivia Wilde), his fantasies come true when she also takes him on as a sexual partner. But the fresh-faced Elliot finds himself out of his depth when Erika brings him into an unfamiliar world of experimental bedroom activities, which eventually leads to obsession, betrayal and even murder. Let’s just say this movie isn’t one for the family!

‘The Runner’ (Prime Video)

Prime Video is closing out its summer original slate with “The Runner,” a new British action-thriller that stars Gal Gadot. Based on the trailer, it doesn’t appear to be trying anything especially new in the genre, but it should be good for 85 minutes of adrenaline-spiking action, and it’s always great to get more female-fronted thrillers. I’m not convinced of its quality (yet), but I’m pretty confident it’ll run straight into the Prime Video top 10.

Maia Marten (Gadot) is a successful attorney living in London. What should have been an ordinary day becomes a frantic race against the clock when her son is abducted. A mysterious caller (Damian Lewis) gives her a series of cryptic commands, and Maia has to race across the city in a desperate bid to save her son. It all sounds as generic as its name, but perhaps “The Runner” will be a pleasant streaming surprise to kick off September.

‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ (Disney+)

The first big-screen “Star Wars” movie in seven years arrives on Disney+ this week, and there’s a certain irony, because I’d argue “this is the way” the Mandalorian movie should be experienced. “The Mandalorian and Grogu” never felt quite at home in theaters, playing out like a condensed fourth season of “The Mandalorian” show. So, if you skipped it in cinemas, you didn’t really miss out; this movie feels made for watching on streaming.

Set between “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens,” the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and his adorable ward, Grogu (aka Baby Yoda), take on a mission for the New Republic to rescue Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White), son of the infamous crime lord Jabba. Naturally, what was supposed to be a simple rescue job becomes a sprawling adventure in this feature-length continuation of the popular Disney+ original show.

‘The President’s Cake’ (Netflix)

If review sites like Rotten Tomatoes determine your watchlist, and you want to know which new streaming arrival this week has the highest score, I’ll cut to the chase: it’s “The President’s Cake.” This Arabic-language drama scores a near-perfect 99% rating with RT’s Critics Consensus labeling it “a tenderly crafted, often devastating portrait of childhood in rural Iraq.” It’s been praised for its complex themes and rich characters.

Set during the Gulf War, where aerial bombardments are a daily occurrence for the Iraqi people, 9-year-old Lamia (Baneen Ahmad Nayyef) and her class are selected to prepare a cake for the upcoming birthday of the country’s leader, Saddam Hussein. In a country gripped by fear and with resources scarce, Lamia sets out to a nearby city to find ingredients.

‘Scary Movie’ (Paramount+)

“Scary Movie” returned this year, and the horror-spoof series hasn’t matured with age. It remains as lowbrow as ever. Its sights are set on lampooning modern horror trends, such as legacy sequels that drop the number in their titles (hence why this isn’t called “Scary Movie 6). Targets this time include recent genre hits like “Weapons,” “Sinners,” “Get Out” and “The Substance,” alongside poking fun at the series favorite target, “Scream.”

2026’s “Scary Movie” also marks the return of the Wayans, who originally left the franchise after 2002’s “Scary Movie 2.” Also back are stars Anna Faris and Regina Hall. The plot is simple, as you would expect from the franchise, and is merely a vehicle to cram in as many parodies and references as possible. In 2026, “Scary Movie” feels a little outdated, but those who long for the days when parody movies were released regularly might see this as a fun throwback.

‘Fuze’ (HBO Max)

Director David Mackenzie, the filmmaker behind last year’s excellent thriller “Relay,” is back in the genre already with “Fuze.” This crime-thriller doesn’t reach the same heights, but with an audacious heist at its core, it’s a movie that will keep you hooked. Plus, if you’re the type of person who demands shocking twists, I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I can confirm there’s a big reveal in “Fuze” that totally flips the script.

Set in present-day London, a portion of the city is forced to evacuate when an unexploded World War II bomb is discovered on a construction site. Among the military squad called in to defuse the bomb is Major Will Tranter (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). However, in the chaos, a group of criminals led by Giorgos "George" Karalis (Theo James) uses the evacuation as a distraction to pull off a bank heist. But as the authorities circle, alliances are questioned and morals tested.

‘Mayday’ (Apple TV)

Apple TV has earned a reputation for quality original series in recent years, but it’s yet to find the same success with its direct-to-streaming movies. Perhaps “Mayday” could be the start of a hot streak in this area, as this Apple original movie features a solid pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. At the very least, it can’t be as bad as “Ghosted,” right?

Apple is labeling “Mayday” a “genre-bending, action-packed buddy comedy that flips the spy thriller on its head,” which reads like marketing buzzword bingo. In this Apple original, Reynolds plays a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot, assigned to a top-secret mission in Russian territory during the height of the Cold War. When the mission goes wrong, he’s stuck behind enemy lines, but finds an unexpected ally in an ex-KGB agent (Branagh), who is obsessed with American culture.

'The Gentlemen' season 2

Genre: Action-comedy series

What it's about: Theo James stars in "The Gentlemen" as Edward "Eddie" Horniman, the 13th Duke of Halstead. He's a former Army captain who served as a United Nations peacekeeping officer. He's also a drug kingpin on the rise. In this season, he's joined forces with Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) and her father, Bobby (Ray Winstone), to transform himself into a major power in the criminal underworld, but it might not go according to plan.

What's it about? Alix Earle is one of the biggest Gen Z internet personalities. She blew up thanks to TikTok, but since then has exploded into a full-blown entrepreneur. In "Earle Meets World," she takes you behind the scenes of her family and her business empire.

Why you need to watch it: Does this show feel like "The Kardashians" for Gen Z? Sure. But a lot of people like "The Kardashians." So if that's your speed, make sure to check out this version for the always online crowd.

'Teenage Wasteland'

Genre: Documentary movie

What it's about: "Teenage Wasteland" revisits the 1996 documentary, "Garbage Gangsters and Greed." This student film was made by Middletown High School teacher Fred Isseks and his English students, and exposed 20 years of toxic waste dumping in the New York town.

Why you should watch it: I've been keeping an eye on "Teenage Wasteland" since it debuted at Sundance last year. And with good reason. It already has a perfect 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 28 reviews.

'Turning Point: Generation 9/11'

Genre: Documentary movie

What it's about: "Turning Point" is a documentary franchise that has examined pivotal moments in modern history, from the Cold War to the War on Terror. In "Generation 9/11," filmmaker Brian Knappenberger examines how the September 11 attacks still impact everything in our daily lives, as well as the disastrous final chapter of the war in Afghanistan.

Why you should watch it: As someone who was in fifth grade living outside of D.C. when 9/11 happened, I've witnessed firsthand the changes that have come since the start of the War on Terror ... most of which have been bad. I cannot recommend watching this enough if you have the time.

'Jared Freid: The Family Plan'

Genre: Stand-up comedy special

What it's about: Jared Freid is a comedian, television host and podcaster. Now, he's back on Netflix with his second special for the streaming service, "Jared Freid: The Family Plan." Expect topics that are family-oriented, but maybe not always family-friendly.

Why you should watch it: I have to say, I loved the trailer for this stand-up special. It's filmed like a gripping documentary expose, interwoven with clips of Fried's stand-up filmed in front of an audience. I'm very curious to see this stand-up special.
