When it comes to deciding what to watch, it can get overwhelming. Fast. There are so many options out there. Even if you keep it to just the best streaming services, there are dozens of new shows and movies added every day. Lucky for you, it's my job to know exactly what's out there. So I've compiled a TV guide on what to watch tonight.

I've gone through everything from Netflix, Paramount+, HBO Max, etc. I've scoured the best free streaming services like Tubi. I've even added some movies you might have missed in theaters that are finally available to buy or rent to stream at home.

'Hot Ones: Extra Heat' (Netflix)

Genre: Interview series

What it's about: "Hot Ones" is the show with "hot questions and even hotter wings." In this interview series, celebrities, actors, musicians, and more go through a series of progressively hotter wings until they reach the final wing: "The Last Dab." The whole time, they answer questions as best they can, but sometimes the heat is too much to bear.

Why you should watch it: "Hot Ones: Extra Heat" is essentially the same show as the "Hot Ones" you're used to watching on YouTube. But instead of a studio show, these 30-minute specials are filmed on location at major Netflix events. The second special will air tonight after "WWE Raw" and will feature CM Punk taking on the "wings of death."

'The 78th Emmy Awards' (Peacock)

Genre: Live awards presentation show

What it's about: Every year, the Emmy Awards honor the best television shows, as well as the best shows across the various streaming services. This year, the ceremony kicks off at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

Why you should watch it: "The Pitt" seems to have Outstanding Drama Series locked up, but Outstanding Comedy Series is a serious competition. The smart money is on "Widow's Bay" winning for its debut season, but the voters may chose to give "Hacks" its flowers for its final season.

'Monday Night Football': Kansas City Chiefs vs Denver Broncos (ESPN Unlimited)

Genre: Live sports event

What it's about: The NFL is back, and that means "Monday Night Football" is back too. Tonight, AFC West rivals Kansas City and Denver face off in a matchup that could already determine who takes the crown in this competitive division.

Why you should watch it: If you want to watch the best teams in the NFL face off against each other, this week's "Monday Night Football" game is a must-watch. The Chiefs had a down year last year, but both of these teams should be considered Super Bowl contenders.

Fantasy fiction is one of the most enchanting genres there is. Open up a fantasy novel and you'll be transported to magical worlds unlike our own and encounter brave heroes, powerful wizards, and many devious foes.

For this list I've picked out 18 of the best fantasy novels ever written. Because fantasy fiction loves a saga, these are almost all the first books in trilogies or even longer series. I've opted for one book per author, with one very notable exception (you can probably guess who that is).

From all time classics like The Hobbit, to newer works like The Lies of Locke Lamora and Piranesi – one of my favorite books of all time – there's loads to choose from here. When you've finished here, make sure check out our guide to the best sci-fi books, too.

However, determining which top 10 entry is worth watching can still be tricky. Fortunately, I track streaming charts for a living, so I’m here to make your life even easier by selecting three current picks that you should consider streaming this week, including a Prime Original romantic drama and an exhilarating spy thriller starring Oscar winner Rami Malek.

‘The Last Sunrise’ (2026)

If you’re not ready to let the summer go yet, then grab onto the last few rays of sunshine with Prime Video’s new original romantic drama. It’s your usual romantic affair that hits all the expected genre beats. It follows two very attractive leads who meet in an exotic location, quickly fall in love, and then battle against several melodramatic hurdles. It doesn’t try to reinvent the formula, but I'm sure many viewers won't care at all.

Ry (Reficco) and her overprotective mother (Longoria) move from America to Mallorca, Spain, where stunning beaches and unexpected romance await. Ry soon meets a charming local, Juliàn (Líndez), and the two begin a passionate love affair. But Ry is dealing with chronic health conditions, and when her condition worsens and family secrets come to light, the pair's romance might not survive until the fall.

‘Icefall’ (2025)

Icefall is one of those thrillers that commanded little attention when it was first released in November 2025, but is now picking up an audience after being added to Prime Video’s movie library. It certainly has a direct-to-DVD quality about it, but if you’re in the mood for some no-frills action, you’ll find your desire for adrenaline abated by this serviceable effort.

Set across the frozen wilderness, a younger ranger, Ani (Cara Jade Myers), arrests a mysterious poacher, Harlan (Kinnaman), who is living off the land to escape his traumatic past. However, when masked criminals attack, the two are forced to strike up an uneasy alliance. The assailants are hunting for a crashed plane holding millions of dollars in cash, and Harlan and Ani will need to put their differences aside if they want to survive the ordeal.

‘The Amateur' (2026)

I’ve recommended “The Amateur” countless times since I caught it in theaters in spring 2025. It’s a slick spy thriller with big Jason Bourne energy, which is a compelling pitch in my book. Based on the Robert Littell novel of the same name, it’s certainly not flawless. However, it packs a globe-trotting revenge quest with some intense action. Though if you can resist, skip the trailer, as it spoils one of the best scenes.

Rami Malek plays a CIA analyst whose world is shattered when his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. Using his skills, he identifies those responsible for his wife's murder and blackmails his superiors into giving him a license to hunt them down and get cold-blooded revenge. A novice in the field, Charlie (Malek) is shown the ropes by a gruff mentor, Hendo (Laurence Fishburne). However, even with some training, he’s still a fish out of water. Quickly realizing he can’t outshoot his enemies, he focuses on outthinking them using his superior intellect.

Horror has always been my favorite genre, and I honestly don’t think I’ll ever get tired of talking about it. Every month, the top streaming services welcome a new class of film titles and television series for viewers to enjoy, and September 2026 has been no exception, especially where Prime Video is concerned. And one of the movies added to Amazon's extensive streaming library this month is one of my early-aughts favorites, a true comfort comedy featuring one of Brittany Murphy's best performances.

After her breakthrough as Tai Frasier in 1995's "Clueless," Murphy turned out a string of memorable roles in the late '90s and early 2000s, including "Girl, Interrupted," "Drop Dead Gorgeous," "8 Mile," "Riding in Cars with Boys" and "Just Married," among others. But "Uptown Girls" — which pairs the late actress with a preternaturally mature school-age Dakota Fanning — sees Murphy bring her signature blend of humor, warmth and emotional depth to elevate the part beyond mere caricature.

What is 'Uptown Girls' about?

Brittany Murphy stars as Molly Gunn, the naïve, socialite daughter of a famous rock star, who has been living off the ample trust fund left to her by her late father—that is, until she makes the horrifying discovery that the family accountant has embezzled her inheritance, leaving her penniless and homeless.

She takes on a job as a nanny for Lorraine "Ray" Schleine (Dakota Fanning), a precocious, hypochondriacal eight-year-old living in Manhattan with an absent, workaholic mother (played by Heather Locklear) and a comatose father.

Together, the free-spirited nanny and buttoned-up youngster make for quite the odd-couple pairing, and their outlooks on life cause friction. But soon, her unlikely new babysitter helps young Ray begin to bring her guard down. All the while, Molly has to deal with romantic drama after falling for singer Neal Fox (Jesse Spencer), and young Ray has to navigate her complicated family dynamics.

Why I recommend you stream 'Uptown Girls'

OK, yes, “Uptown Girls” received abysmal reviews from professional critics when it hit theaters back in summer 2003. (The Boaz Yakin-directed dramedy has only a 14% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.) But in the decades since, the film has been revisited with kinder eyes, especially in the tragic wake of Brittany Murphy’s untimely death in December 2009.

The early-2000s gem saw the late actress give one of her warmest and most charismatic performances, paired excellently with the deadpan, soon-to-thaw iciness of her much younger screen partner, Dakota Fanning. It's the emotional chemistry and comedic banter between the film's leads, as well as the tender treatment of the characters' respective plights, that have made "Uptown Girls" a comfort-watch classic all these years later.

If you're looking to find what new movies and shows Netflix is adding this week, I've got you covered. The streaming service is adding just 15 new movies, shows and live events this week. That's not necessarily a lot to sort through, but you're still going to want some advice on which select few deserve making it onto your watchlist.

But don't worry, I've got you covered. This week you'll want to check out "Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story," the fourth season of the hit historical true crime drama series. Fans of Hawkins, Indiana, meanwhile, are going to want to add "Stranger Things: Tales From '85" season 2 to their watchlist when it arrives this Wednesday.

'Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story'

Genre: Biographical crime drama anthology series

What it's about: "Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story" marks the fourth season of the hit anthology series "Monster." This time, we're diving into the life of Lizzie Borden (Ella Beatty). She was famously (or infamously) acquitted of the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. But people are convinced to this day that she's guilty.

Why you should watch it: This is the second edition of "Monster" not to involve show creator Ryan Murphy. It's also the second edition to feature Charlie Hunnam, this time as Lizzie's father, Andrew. Hopefully, things go better this time; "The Ed Gein Story" was not well received, despite Hunnam's performance.

'Stranger Things: Tales From '85' season 2

Genre: Animated sci-fi series

What it's about: "Stranger Things: Tales from '85" is back for another season, and it's still set in Hawkins and full of 80s nostalgia. In fact, it picks up right after the events of the first season. But while the gang of Eleven (Brooklyn Davey Norstedt), Mike (Luca Diaz), Will (Benjamin Plessala), Lucas (Elisha “EJ” Williams), Max (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport), and Nikki (Odessa A’zion) are hoping things will go back to normal, a haunted woods is about to prove things are never normal in Hawkins.

Why you should watch it: This show may have new actors playing them, but it still features the original characters and locations from "Stranger Things." So if you enjoyed the original series, this animated spinoff should be easy to connect with.

'Best of the Best'

Genre: Dance comedy movie

What it's about: "Best of the Best" follows two childhood friends, Maya (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and Anjali (Priyanka Kedia), who join UCLA's competitive Bollywood-fusion dance team. But once there, they discover that this dance squad is even more cutthroat than getting into college was, and all that matters is winning the U.S. championship.

Why you should watch it: Technically, I don't think this is a Bollywood movie, as my research has led me to believe "Best of the Best" was filmed in New Jersey. But whether you like Bollywood dance numbers or movies like "Mean Girls" and "Bring It On," this movie seems to have something for you.

'Jo Koy: Blue in the Face'

Genre: Stand-up comedy special

What it's about: In "Blue in the Face," comedian Jo Koy returns to Netflix for his sixth special on the streaming service. This time, he's talking about wild dental disasters, getting fired from McDonald's, his veteran stepdad, and, based on this trailer, a dog repeatedly barking in your face.

Why you should watch it: Koy is one of the most popular stand-up comedians touring right now, as evidenced by the fact that he has more Netflix specials than most TV shows get seasons. So if you're looking for a new reason to laugh, this hour of stand-up is worth checking out.

"Stop! That! Train!

Genre: Action comedy disaster movie

What it's about: Tess (Ginger Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee) are two stewardesses looking for work. So they sneak aboard the high-class Glamazonian Express, only to discover it's headed straight for a massive storm, better known as "Stormganza."

Why you should watch it: "Stop! That! Train!" is essentially "Airplane!" meets "RuPaul's Drag Race." And I don't mean that as an insult — it's a selling point. Watch the trailer, try not to laugh, and once you're done, add this movie to your watchlist.

Apple TV's new action-comedy "Mayday" takes a well-known setup and has an absolute blast with it. If you haven't yet seen the massively popular flick, Ryan Reynolds plays a hotshot U.S. Navy pilot who ends up stranded behind enemy lines in the Soviet Union in 1987, and Kenneth Branagh is a gruff ex-KGB agent who reluctantly helps him get home.

It's a Cold War spy thriller played mostly for laughs, powered by the odd-couple chemistry between its two stars, that's earned a respectable 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes. If you tore through it and want more in the same vein, thankfully, you've got options. In fact, there are plenty if you're ready to take a walk through the decades.

Whether you're into an enemies-to-partners story or a buddy cop with familiar leads, here are three action comedies that scratch the same itch. For fun, try watching them all in chronological order when they were released to see how the timeless formula nails it with every single movie.

'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' (2015'

Guy Ritchie's stylish spy caper drops you into 1963, at the height of the Cold War, and forces a charming CIA agent (Henry Cavill) and a hot-tempered KGB operative (Armie Hammer) to work together against a common enemy. Like Reynolds and Branagh, the two spend nearly as much time needling each other as they do dodging bullets, and the fun is all in watching these sworn enemies have to work together as a team.

It's got the same blend of espionage, retro Cold War intrigue and dry humor you'll find in "Mayday", all dressed up in some of the best-looking suits you'll ever see on screen. And for all you Cavill fans out there, he's in rare form in this one.

'The Nice Guys' (2016)

Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling play a hired enforcer and a hapless private eye who get stuck working the same case in 1977 Los Angeles. The entire movie sees them bickering their way through a plot that keeps getting bloodier and funnier.

Writer-director Shane Black more or less wrote the blueprint "Mayday" is building from. It's two guys who can't stand each other, thrown together, cracking jokes while the bodies pile up. It's a bit sharper in terms of humor and slightly more violent than "Mayday," but the odd-couple energy is the same vibe. Plus, it's perfect for all the Gosling fans out there coming off of "Project Hail Mary."

'Spies Like Us' (1985)

This classic comedy can't be beat, especially if you love slapstick and sardonic humor. Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd play two bumbling government agents recruited as decoy spies and dropped into the Soviet Union, where they're hopelessly out of their depth.

Admittedly, it's much sillier than "Mayday," and it's a straight comedy rather than an action movie, but the jokes are still the same. You've got two hapless Americans stranded deep in enemy territory, trying to bluff their way home. Directed by John Landis, it's a nostalgic, endlessly quotable good time, and it pairs especially well with "Mayday" as a fun double feature, with both movies straight out of the '80s, in and out of universe.

What is ‘Daniel Isn't Real’ about?

Luke (Miles Robbins) is a quiet college student struggling in the wake of a violent event he witnessed as a child. Back then, he coped by inventing Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger), a charismatic imaginary friend whom his mother urged him to "lock away" in an antique dollhouse after Daniel caused some mischief and poisoned her. Years later, overwhelmed by anxiety and a difficult home life, Luke lets Daniel out.

At first, Daniel is confidence in a bottle, pushing Luke to be bold, creative, and social. But the gentle nudges quickly turn into dark commands, and Daniel’s charm turns cruel. When Luke refuses to obey, the "imaginary friend" takes over his body and acts on his own.

After a few terrifying episodes, you're left to wonder: Is Luke losing a battle with his own mind, or has he invited something genuinely malicious to take control?

"Daniel Isn't Real" tackles this premise with gusto, delivering a thoughtful narrative featuring a protagonist who actively questions his own sanity rather than writing off disturbing events as mere coincidence.

Patrick Schwarzenegger delivers an electric performance, imbuing Daniel with a cold-blooded malice that catches you off guard. Evil radiates from him in every scene, keeping you unsettled even when you aren't entirely sure if he is the root of Luke's problems.

A dreamlike haze permeates every corner of the film. You’re never quite sure what is real and what is hallucinated, which is precisely where the magic lies. Her fixation soon changes from sad to dangerous, and she turns out to be willing to forge letters, stage alibis, and worse to protect her fantasy of a perfect life. How far will she go to be with Robert, or at the very least pretend that he's her partner?

'Look Away'

Maria (India Eisley) is a shy high schooler who's bullied by fellow students and depressed at home. Her plastic surgeon father (Jason Isaacs) is obsessed with physical perfection, and her checked-out mother (Mira Sorvino) offers no respite. Isolated and miserable, Maria starts confiding in her own reflection, which begins talking back. It calls itself Airam and offers to "take care of" everyone who's wronged Maria. When Maria finally lets Airam trade places with her, her confident mirror image starts settling scores, and Maria may not be able to get her life back.

'Open 24 Hours'

Mary (Vanessa Grasse) has just been released from confinement for setting her boyfriend on fire. But that boyfriend, James (Cole Vigue), was a serial killer called the Rain Ripper who forced her to watch him murder his victims. Shunned by everyone who thinks she should have stopped him sooner and medicated for her hallucinations afterward, Mary takes the only job she can get: an overnight shift at a gas station. Alone on her first night, she starts seeing James in every corner of the building. Those around her actually begin turning up dead, and she begins to spiral. That leaves her and the audience unsure how much of the carnage is in her head and how much of it is actually happening as James' ghost lingers on.

The Korean film industry is wildly popular, especially on streaming services like Netflix, where Korean movies across all genres are among the most-watched non-English content globally.

And that's certainly true where rom-coms are concerned, with viewers of all nationalities seeking out the Korea-made flicks for their lighthearted humor, emotional depth and deliciously addictive genre tropes like chance encounters, slow-burn romances and enemies-to-lovers dynamics.

You'll find all of that and more with this trio of adorable Korean romantic comedies that, if you haven't seen them yet, definitely deserve a place on your to-watch list. Whether you're in the mood for a relatable workplace rom-com, a nostalgia-inducing teen love story or a romantic comedy with a healthy dash of kinkiness (hello!), here are three Korean rom-coms you should check out ASAP.

'Love and Leashes'

If your rom-com proclivities run a bit more "Secretary" than "Serendipity," this is the movie for you. Based on the webtoon "Moral Sense" by Gyeoul, this risqué South Korean romance pairs together Seohyun and Lee Jun-young as co-workers Ji-hoo and Ji-woo, respectively, who decide to enter into a consensual, contractual relationship for three months, all while trying their best not to get feelings involved.

But if you're getting "50 Shades" vibes from that movie synopsis, know that this Park Hyun-jin-directed flick is more lighthearted and playful than that melodramatic franchise. "Seohyun and Lee Jun-young deliver sweet and wholesome performances," wrote critic James March of the South China Morning Post, praising the film for its "commendable effort to lift the blindfold on a stigmatised subculture."

'Sweet & Sour'

Based on the novel "Initiation Love" by Kurumi Inui, this sweet 2021 romantic comedy from Lee Gye-byeok delves into that all-too-relatable issue of how to make a long-distance relationship work. The story centers on Jang-hyuk (Jang Ki-yong), who meets a nurse named Da-eun (Chae Soo-bin) while hospitalized in Incheon with hepatitis.

After he gets healthier, they kick off a relationship together, only for Jang-hyuk to have to move away to Seoul when he lands a temporary but demanding corporate job. Soon, the work pressures and miles between them manifest as emotional distance between the couple, until a late-in-the-movie twist leaves you rethinking everything that happened in the hour-plus prior.

'20th Century Girl'

Written and directed by Bang Woo-ri in her feature film debut, this late-'90s-set coming-of-age rom-com revolves around Na Bo-ra (Kim You-jung), a 17-year-old high-schooler who has promised her lovesick best friend Yeon-du (Roh Yoon-seo) that she'll keep close tabs on her pal's crush while the latter girl is in the US for surgery. However, things become complicated when Bo-ra starts tailing the boy and inadvertently falls for him herself.

Also starring Byeon Woo-seok and Park Jung-woo, the charming 2022 title was widely praised by critics for its heart and humor (it has an 86% approval rating), including Variety's Claire Lee, who wrote: "20th Century Girl' does manage to add to the timeworn theme of first love by providing a moving examination of what makes certain moments and certain people unforgettable."

'Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Again?' (2026)

Netflix subscribers can't get enough of Tyler Perry, so I'm not surprised to see his latest "Why Did I Get Married Again?" still in the #1 spot after coming out on September 9. It revives a franchise that's so old, I'm sure some subscribers don't even realize it's a reboot. Most of the original cast of "Why Did I Get Married?" and "Why Did I Get Married Too?" reunite for an Italian wedding — including Diane (Sharon Leal), Sheila (Jill Scott), Troy (Lamman Rucker), and Mike (Richard T. Jones). The only one missing is Janet Jackson's Patricia, replaced by a new character named Roselyn (Taraji P. Henson).

Jasmine (Armani Greer) and Wesley (Everett Osbourne) are a young couple just days away from saying "I do" at a grand destination wedding. Their occasion has older wedding guests reflecting on the highs and lows of their own marriages, but as the less-than-happy couple wrestles with going through with the ceremony, it forces the other couples to take a hard look at their own happily-ever-afters.

'Turning Point: Generation 9/11' (2026)

I'm surprised to see "Turning Point: Generation 9/11" holding strong in the top 10 (and it's actually climbed a few spots since last weekend!) because of everything "Turning Point's" put out, I thought this feature-length documentary was the weakest. To be fair, that bar is pretty damn high. My husband and I regularly return to "Turning Point's" phenomenal docuseries on the Cold War and Vietnam War for their engaging recaps of historical events before our time. The kind of context that makes it easier to wrap your head around the Unprecedented Times our country's in now.

In "Generation 9/11," filmmaker Brian Knappenberger examines how the September 11 attacks still impact everything in our daily lives through interviews with survivors of the attacks and those who lost loved ones in the attacks. It's an emotional watch, to be sure, but if you're looking to dive into the subject on a deeper level, I can't recommend "Turning's Point's" docuseries on 9/11 enough.

'Puss in Boots: The Last Wish' (2022)

I didn't have high hopes for "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" at first, having never seen the original "Puss in Boots." But I'm happy to say this decade-in-the-making sequel is the rare spin-off that surpasses the original, and it's on par with the "Spider-Verse" series with vibrant animation that's a feast for the eyes. "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" feels like a storybook come to life thanks to some clever blending of 3D and 2D animation.

Antonio Banderas returns as the beloved Puss, joined by Salma Hayek as Kitty, along with a new set of fairy-tale characters like Jack Horner (voiced by a hilariously evil John Mulaney), Goldilocks (Florence Pugh), and her Three Bears Crime Family (Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, and Samson Kayo). Packed with lush-painted backgrounds, stylized fight scenes that really pop, and razer-sharp humor, "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" is the kind of kids' movie you won't mind if your children insist on watching it on repeat.

"The Great Debaters" was, admittedly, a blind spot for me. I knew it was coming in the Denzel Watchathon. I remembered seeing trailers for it back when it came out in 2007.

What I didn't remember was that I was far from the only person who didn't see this movie back in the 2000s. It was a flop at the box office, bringing in just $30.2 million despite starring Denzel and Forest Whitaker.

Now that I have seen it, though, I think it's a movie in Denzel's career that's a must-watch, even if I wouldn't put it among the best movies he's ever done. As a film, it's a fairly average historical drama. It plays a bit fast and loose with the truth and has a few stunning moments. Because the cast, aside from Denzel and Whitaker, is relatively young, it's also incredibly plucky, which isn't what I tend to want from a movie.

But Denzel is incredible as Melvin B. Tolson. Granted, the great orator archetype he's leaning into here has been done before. It's very reminiscent of his own performance in "Remember the Titans," or Robin Williams in "Dead Poets Society." Those are great performances, however. You wouldn't want to have missed them, and you won't want to miss this one either.

Without Denzel, 'The Great Debaters' is merely average

"The Great Debaters" is based on a true story. Denzel Washington's character, Melvin Tolson, was really a professor at the historically Black college Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He really did lead a debate team that became renowned for their abilities and their participation in interracial debates.

And James Farmer Jr. (Denzel Whitaker) really did go to Wiley College, where his dad (Forest Whitaker) taught, at age 14. He really participated on the Wiley debate team at that young age and went on to be a prominent civil rights leader.

Beyond that, well, that's when "The Great Debaters" can't get out of the way of Hollywood's penchant for poetic license.

While Tolson and the Farmers are real, Henry Lowe (Nate Parker), Samantha Booke (Jurnee Smollett) and Hamilton Burgess (Jermaine Williams) are only shades of real people. Booke is the closest to her real counterpart, Henrietta Bell Wells, but even she is a partial work of fiction. Also, the climactic debate at a certain Ivy League school? The real version took place against the University of Southern California, which was the reigning debate champion at the time.

Now, movies take liberties with adaptation all the time. It's something I try to be lenient about. But I'm not sure why this movie felt the need to change these details, given that the real version wouldn't have made the movie demonstrably less engaging based on the research I've done.

Of course, the reality is it wouldn't have made the movie demonstrably more engaging either. While well directed by Denzel, the plotting of this story feels formulaic. The kids are remarkably plucky, able to dust themselves off with ease. While there are struggles to overcome for our main characters ... they all are overcome in the end.

Case in point: the climactic debate, which is set up as if it were a final bout in a boxing movie, doesn't deliver its stakes appropriately. I'm never totally drawn in, and in the end, I'm happy with the resolution, but that happiness is fleeting.

That's not to say nothing sticks with you in this movie, and most of it has to do with Denzel's portrayal of Tolson. While teaching the debate team, there's a subplot of Tolson organizing farmers in Marshal into a union. This is one moment where I'm glad the scriptwriters deviated from the historical record, because it provides two of the most memorable moments in the film.

The other moment that sticks with you is when Tolson and the debate team come across a lynching in Texas. It's a brutal sight and is one of the few moments in the movie where the racism of the Jim Crow South sucks the oxygen out of the room in an impactful way.

Verdict: You should watch 'The Great Debaters' at least once

If the movie had chosen to stick more to Tolson's story, or perhaps to Farmer Jr.'s, maybe it would have been more impactful. The more the movie focuses on the realities of the 1930s South, the more impactful it feels and the more it makes you take notice.

But I get why the movie instead chooses to focus on the successes of its characters. It doesn't wish to totally ignore the reality of its setting, but its focus is on portraying a moment of Black excellence to a general audience. Admittedly, this desire makes it all the more baffling that the writers tweaked the history of the Wiley Debate Team, but again, I largely understand what they were going for.

Regardless, Denzel's performance as Tolson is worth the price of admission. While the performances of the kids often range from melodramatic to reading soulessly off a script (Parker stands out on occasion), Denzel's poignant remarks and cutting wit are emotive. There's an electricity to it that provides a jolt to this historical drama whenever he's on screen.

If you've seen his performance before, I'm not sure you need to rush to see it again. But if you've never seen it (and based on its box office, chances are you haven't), then "The Great Debaters" is a must-watch, if only to see Denzel bring Tolson to life on screen.

'Dark Matter' season 2 (Apple TV)

Genre: Sci-fi thriller series

What it's about: Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) was a collegiate physics professor until a variant of him from another reality came and stole his life. In season 1, he wandered multiple versions of Chicago using a mysterious device called the "Box." Now, in season 2, he's reunited with his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley), but they're on the run through the multiverse, looking for a reality where they can live a quiet life.

Why you should watch it: I'm currently caught up on "Dark Matter" season 2, and I think I prefer it to season 1. Check out our "Dark Matter" season 2 review for a spoiler-free breakdown of what works and doesn't work in this new season.

'Drop' (2025) (Peacock)

Genre: Mystery thriller movie

What's it about? What if you had to kill your date, or your son dies? In "Drop," Meghann Fahy is on the first date she's had since the death of her abusive husband. But partway through the date, she receives a message: kill her date (Brandon Sklenar) or a masked gunman shoots her son.

Why you need to watch it: I love the way the trailer shifts from romance movie to twisted thriller, and it seems like the full-length movie doesn't drop the ball. Critics rated it 83% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences weren't far behind.

'Rich Flu' (2024) (Hulu)

Genre: Thriller movie

What's it about? Laura (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has finally made it in her career, rubbing elbows with the rich and famous. Which is great for her, until people start to drop dead. Now, the less wealthy think that there's a new virus being spread by the elites, and the only way to avoid being killed by the angry mob is to give away your wealth or find somewhere safe to hide.

Why you need to watch it: The premise for "Rich Flu" is intriguing. And I like Winstead. But I won't pretend that reviews for the film have been stellar; they've been quite mixed. Lucky for you, it's now included in your Hulu subscription, so you don't have to pay extra to give it a chance.

Paramount+ is a great streaming service if you're building a weekend movie marathon. It adds dozens of movies to the platform each month. It just added over 120 new movies and shows on September 1 alone. Many of these are beloved classics or more modern hits. A few times a month, you also get brand-new movies from Paramount Skydance Studios.

This week, I'm giving you a pair of comedy movies with a dark, twisted thriller in between. Let's start with "The Death of Stalin," a 2017 political satire from "Veep" creator Armando Iannucci. Once you pick yourself up off the ground from laughing, hit play on "Seven," a serial killer thriller that might be one of the least funny movies ever made. Don't worry, though; we'll end things on a high note. "My Cousin Vinny" was just added to Paramount+ on the first of the month, and it's hilarious, in no small part due to Marisa Tomei's award-winning performance.

'The Death of Stalin' (2017)

Genre: Political satire black comedy movie

What's it about? Based on the French graphic novel "La Mort de Staline," "The Death of Stalin" depicts the internal power struggle among the members of the Soviet Politburo following the death of leader Joseph Stalin in 1953. And it is hysterical.

Why you need to watch it: This comedy is loaded with talent. Written and directed by "Veep" creator Armando Iannucci, it stars Steve Buscemi, Simon Russell Beale, Paddy Considine, Rupert Friend, Jason Isaacs, Michael Palin, Andrea Riseborough and Jeffrey Tambor as various members of the Soviet elite. It'd be impossible not to make a great comedy movie with that roster.

'Seven' (1995)

Genre: Crime thriller movie

What's it about? "Seven" centers on Morgan Freeman as he and his new partner (Brad Pitt) try to stop a serial killer committing murders based on the seven deadly sins. Freeman's Det. William Somerset is on the brink of retirement, but could this case be his last for other reasons?

Why you should watch it: This is thrilling. It's gripping. It's also incredibly dark. But it also is one of the best crime thrillers ever. The performances from Freeman, Pitt and Kevin Spacey are worth the price of admission, but they might not even be the best part of this movie. The highlight is really the story of "Seven" and its pitch-perfect pacing. Plus, if you don't already know "What's in the box?", then the twist ending will leave you stunned.

'My Cousin Vinny' (1992)

Genre: Legal comedy movie

What's it about? "My Cousin Vinny" stars Joe Pesci as a newly minted lawyer. His first case? Getting his cousin, Bill (Ralph Macchio), and Bill's friend Stan (Mitchell Whitfield) off a murder charge in Alabama for a crime they didn't commit. That's going to prove difficult, though, as Vinny and his fiancée, Mona (Marisa Tomei), have a New Yorker sensibility that clashes with Alabama's Southern hospitality.

Why you should watch it: This movie is funny, in large part due to excellent performances from Pecsi and Tomei. Tomei even won an Academy Award for her performance as Mona Lisa Vito.

The weekends were made for watching great movies on some of the best streaming services, and if you're looking for new arrivals on Netflix, you're in luck. The streamer recently added a slew of movies to its library, and I've combed through the list to find three picks worthy of your watchlist.

These include one of the most charming romantic comedies I've ever seen. I challenge you not to feel all warm and fuzzy after watching. Or, if you want thrills, how about the best sci-fi horror movie ever made in the form of "Alien." Meanwhile, comedy fans should check a very silly but very funny genre effort starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne.

These three movies just recently arrived on Netflix, and each one makes for a great watch this weekend. So, let's dive into my picks this week.

‘About Time’ (2013)

I’m a little picky when it comes to rom-coms. I do enjoy the genre, but there’s a fine line between charming and sappy. “About Time” finds the perfect balance. It’s very sentimental but never crosses into cloyingly sweet. It’s a feel-good movie that celebrates the beautiful mundanity of life, and like all good rom-coms, has two lovable leads in the form of Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams. Not to mention Bill Nighy in a wonderful supporting role.

Tim (Gleeson) is an everyman who learns from his father (Nighy) that all the men in their family possess a special gift: the ability to travel through time. His power is limited to traveling back to points in his own life, and so he uses his strange ability to meet the perfect girl, which he quickly realizes is Mary (McAdams). This isn’t a time travel movie about saving the world, but about using your limited time on Earth to find true happiness.

‘Alien’ (1979)

“Alien” is not only my favorite movie of all time, but the larger franchise is my favorite in all of media, so if given the chance to recommend it, I'll always take it. At the start of the month, Netflix added both “Alien” and its fan-favorite sequel “Aliens,” so if you’re looking for a double-bill this weekend, look no further. However, much as I love James Cameron’s gung-ho follow-up, it’s the original “Alien” that remains peerless in my book.

The most effective sci-fi horror movie ever made, “Alien” is an intense experience. When it’s not making your skin crawl with fear, it’s constructing a sci-fi future that feels tangible and more than deserving of the further exploration it’s received in the decades since the Xenomorph was first unleashed on audiences. If you somehow don’t know the basics of this masterpiece, it follows the crew of the space ship Nostromo as they encounter an alien life form, one designed to be the perfect predator.

‘Neighbors’ (2014)

Looking for laughs this weekend? Then I submit “Neighbors.” This crude 2014 comedy is neatly pitched around its “family vs. frat” premise, and boasts hilarious performances from an all-star cast of very funny people including Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron and Dave Franco. For Efron in particular, “Neighbors” was a breakout role, allowing him to shed his Disney skin after being known for starring in “High School Musical."

Couple Mac (Rogen) and Kelly (Byrne) are adapting to life with a newborn baby, which is already testing enough. However, things get even more complicated when a boisterous fraternity moves into the house next door. Led by Teddy (Efron) and Pete (Franco), the college group brings utter chaos and debauchery to the neighborhood. At first, Mac and Kelly try to play nice with the fraternity, but eventually reach their limit and engage in a plan to sabotage Delta Psi Beta and get them kicked off campus.

Fall is approaching, and that guarantees one thing: New movies and TV shows are dropping like ripe apples. So, there's plenty to watch this weekend on Netflix, Prime Video, Peacock and the rest of the best streaming services.

As Tom’s Guide’s streaming editor, I watch TV and movies for a living, and I’ve done the hard part for you: sorting through this week’s new arrivals and ranking them by what's actually worth your time. Making the list is season 2 of “The Paper,” with “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” back for a fifth season and Jason Statham's high-seas thriller “Mutiny” making waves. Whatever your mood, this weekend’s lineup has something for everybody. Here’s my watchlist, ranked from "must see" to "maybe later."

1. ‘The Paper’ season 2 (Peacock)

Genre: Workplace comedy
Available now: 10 episodes (about 25 min each)
What it's about: The Toledo Truth Teller is riding high after its Ohio Journalism Awards sweep, but editor-in-chief Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) has bigger ambitions. There’s also the small matter of his secret romance with reporter Mare Pritti (Chelsea Frei), which could become the newsroom’s juiciest story yet.
Why it’s worth your time: "The Paper" has figured out its own, unique place in "The Office" universe. Season 2 brings back the wonderfully oddball newsroom ensemble for more questionable reporting decisions, workplace scheming and romantic entanglements.

2. ‘Call My Agent! The Movie’ (Netflix)

Genre: Comedy-drama
Runtime: 1h 59m
What it's about: Five years after the ASK talent agency imploded, Andréa Martel (Camille Cottin) is directing her first feature when her leading man drops out days before filming. She turns to former colleague Noémie (Laure Calamy), now a producer, and reunites the old ASK gang to save the project. They’ll have to battle celebrity egos, professional betrayals, a custody battle and enough on-set disasters to turn anybody off of showbiz.
Why it's worth your time: It’s rare for a beloved TV show to yield a movie that doesn’t feel like a desperate reunion, yet “Call My Agent” pulls it off. Cottin and Calamy remain the heart of the story, despite the parade of celebrity cameos — including George Clooney and Eva Longoria. Beneath the delicious industry satire is a surprisingly tender love letter to filmmaking and the people behind it.

3. ‘Saturday Night Live UK’ season 2 (Peacock)

Genre: Live sketch comedy
Premiere date: Episode 1 on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. ET
What it's about: "SNL UK" returns for a second season, bringing its live, anything-can-happen format back to Saturday nights (and Sunday afternoons in the U.S.) The 11 returning cast members will tackle the week’s news and pop culture through topical sketches, musical performances and a distinctly British take on "Weekend Update," with a different celebrity host and musical guest each week.
Why it's worth your time: The first season had the difficult task of proving that Britain could do "SNL" without simply cosplaying as America. The cast pulled it off by developing its own rhythms, characters and comic chemistry.

4. ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ season 5 (Hulu)

Genre: Reality TV docu-soap
Available now: 5 episodes (about 45 min each)
What it's about: Taylor Frankie Paul’s canceled "Bachelorette" season may never see the light of day, but "Mormon Wives" is filling in some of the blanks. Season 5 picks up around Taylor’s relationship drama with Dakota Mortensen, while the rest of #MomTok grapples with shifting loyalties, fractured friendships and the increasingly inconvenient problem of everyone being very famous.
Why it's worth your time: For anyone who thought "Mormon Wives" had already exhausted its supply of interpersonal implosions — ha! This short five-episode season is a compressed, but still explosive dose of Taylor fallout, cast feuds and MomTok infighting.

5. ‘Mutiny’ (digital)

Genre: Action thriller
Runtime: 1h 35m
What it's about: When his billionaire boss is murdered and he’s framed for the crime, former cop-turned-bodyguard Cole Reed (Jason Statham) goes on the run, stowing away aboard a cargo ship. Bad move for the ship’s crew, because Cole soon discovers they’re running a human-trafficking operation. Now he has to clear his name, rescue the victims and take out a small army of very unlucky goons.
Why it's worth your time: Let’s be honest — you’re not watching a Jason Statham movie for the intricacies of its plot. You’re here to watch Jason Statham break things, shoot people and run like the devil. Think “Die Hard” on a boat.

6. ‘One Night Only’ (digital)

Genre: Romantic comedy
Runtime: 1h 42m
What it's about: It’s “The Purge” but for sex (whoever came up with that title, “The Urge” was right there.) The premise: There’s one night a year when premarital sex is legal, and Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner are two attractive, single New Yorkers who want something more than a glorified hookup. Yes, this raises approximately 47,000 logistical questions; don't expect realistic answers.
Why it's worth your time: Hollywood is drowning in sequels, spinoffs and IP extensions, so an original rom-com feels almost revolutionary — even if it’s stupidly silly. Sometimes, that’s all you want from a movie night.

7. ‘Last Seen’ (Apple TV)

Genre: Mystery thriller
Available now: Episodes 1-2 (about 47 min each)
What it’s about: Eleven years after his young daughter Maggie disappears, former detective Ian Ridley (Patrick Brammall) is working as an emergency dispatcher and stubbornly refusing to believe she’s gone. Then a frantic call comes in from a teenage girl Ian is convinced is Maggie. Cue grief, obsession and some extremely questionable decisions.
Why it’s worth your time: Missing-child thrillers are hardly in short supply, but "Last Seen" gives the familiar setup a bit of a telecom twist. If you like your mysteries slow-burning and psychologically messy, pick up the phone.

8. ‘Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?’ (Netflix)

Genre: Comedy-drama
Runtime: 1h 49m
What it's about: Nothing says “happy couple” quite like inviting your parents and all their messy group of friends to your destination wedding. Jasmine (Armani Greer) and Wesley (Everett Osborne) head to Lake Como to tie the knot, bringing along their families and extended crew from Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?” movies. Naturally, the festivities dinner goes about as well as you’d expect: old betrayals, infidelities, addictions and other long-buried secrets start bubbling up.
Why it's worth your time: Look, nobody turns relationship dysfunction into a glossy soap opera quite like Tyler Perry. His latest entry in the “Married” franchise features big feelings, bigger speeches and moral lessons delivered with zero subtlety, but that’s kind of Perry’s thing.
Where to stream: Netflix

9. ‘Moana’ (digital)

Genre: Adventure, fantasy, musical, family
Runtime: 1 hour 47 minutes
What it's about: If you’ve seen the 2016 animated original, well, you’ve basically already seen this live-action retelling. Catherine Laga’aia plays the fearless teen islander who sails beyond the reef to save her home from a curse, teaming up with the egotistical demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) to return the stolen heart of the goddess Te Fiti. The songs are the same, the plot is mostly the same and even the jokes sound very familiar.
Why it's worth your time: Look, did Disney need a live-action remake of a movie that came out 10 years ago? No. Is the original superior in every way? Yes. Still, newcomer Laga’aia is charming, the tropical visuals are gorgeous and the songs still absolutely slap.

10. ‘Crew Girl’ (Netflix)

Genre: Teen drama
Available now: 8 episodes (about 44 minutes each)
What it's about: After a family scandal blows up her life, teenage rowing prodigy Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau) lands at an elite East Coast prep school hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers there’s no girls’ crew, so she becomes coxswain for the school’s deeply dysfunctional boys’ team. Now she has to wrangle the boat, her complicated home life and two handsome teammates.
Why it's worth your time: If you like your coming-of-age dramas with a side of aggressively competitive sports, "Crew Girl" has your seat reserved. It’s got the requisite prep-school privilege, romantic rivalries and family angst, sort of like "The O.C." with oars.

Some films become so iconic that they permanently imprint themselves on pop culture, living on through remakes, spinoffs, Halloween costumes and characters that linger long after the credits roll. While I can't recall the first time I saw "Psycho," I'll never forget how deeply it resonated with me, instantly becoming one of my all-time favorite horror movies.

The 1960 original was never intended to spawn a franchise like "Halloween" or "Final Destination." Yet somewhere along the way, director Richard Franklin and screenwriter Tom Holland saw the potential for a deeper story. All these years later, I finally sat down to watch the 1983 sequel. While "Psycho II" can't quite match its legendary predecessor, it still offers plenty to enjoy.

Starring Anthony Perkins as an adult Norman Bates and Vera Miles returning as Lila Crane (sister to Norman's most famous victim, Marion), "Psycho II" breathes fresh life into a familiar story, anchored by the iconic, creepy backdrop of the Bates Motel. And though it's been somewhat forgotten, it's well worth a watch.

What is 'Psycho 2' about?

The story picks up 22 years after the original. Having been found not guilty by reason of insanity, Norman Bates (Perkins) is declared sane and released from the mental institution. Unsurprisingly, Lila strongly protests his freedom, though Norman finds an ally in his gentle, supportive psychiatrist, Dr. Raymond (Robert Loggia). What could possibly go wrong?

Upon returning home, Norman discovers that the Bates Motel has been run by a sleazy manager, Warren Toomey (Dennis Franz), who turned the property into a den of iniquity. Horrified, Norman fires Toomey and sets out to reclaim his home, aiming to restore it to its former glory.

While washing dishes at a nearby diner to support himself, Norman befriends a sympathetic young woman named Mary (Meg Tilly). Though Norman is genuinely dedicated to building a normal life, peace proves elusive. The shadow of his mother still looms large: cryptic notes signed "Mother" begin appearing, along with sightings of a figure in her clothes standing at the house windows. Then, the bodies start piling up. It leaves us to wonder: has Norman relapsed into his old habits, or is someone setting him up?

Why I recommend you stream 'Psycho II'

Following in the footsteps of a masterpiece is a daunting task, but Franklin — a self-proclaimed Hitchcock devotee — manages to pay loving homage to the original. His respect for the source material shines through in the film's camerawork, which mirrors Hitchcock's signature sweeping camera movements.

It also goes without saying that without Perkins returning to the role, this film never would have worked — or happened at all. He steps back into Norman’s shoes effortlessly, retaining the character's familiar nervous quirks and tics while adding a quiet maturity fitting for a man who spent two decades in an asylum. Norman's earnest struggle to go straight adds a fascinating layer of sympathy to the plot.

That said, brace yourself for significantly more explicit bloodshed. Where Hitchcock relied on restraint and clever editing to let the audience's imagination fill in the blanks, Franklin leans directly into the visceral '80s slasher aesthetic.

If you view the original "Psycho" as untouchable sacrilege, you might want to skip this one; you'll likely be disappointed. But if you're a broad horror fan who appreciates a well-crafted '80s thriller, "Psycho II" is a surprisingly worthy trip back to the motel.

The action movies section on Prime Video is a strange place. Alongside the big-name blockbusters and the endless parade of straight-to-streaming movies, there are absolutely tons of genuinely great action movies almost nobody talks about. The only problem is that they're buried so far down the menu you'd never find them just by scrolling.

The algorithm seemingly has no interest in showing them to you; it wants you watching the same handful of hits on a loop. Maybe that's meant to boost stats, but it also means the more interesting stuff gets left to rot at the bottom of the catalog.

So I went digging for you to see what I could find. The result? Three great action flicks you've probably never seen before. And I'm also willing to bet you probably haven't even heard their titles. If you're ready to watch some great action movies on Prime Video that won't surface on your home screen, keep reading. You may very well find a new favorite in one of these gems.

'13 Assassins' (2010)

If you've never seen a Takashi Miike movie, this is a great one to start with. Set in the dying days of feudal Japan, "13 Assassins" follows a veteran samurai with an impossible mission: assassinate a sadistic young lord, the shogun's own half-brother, before his cruelty ends up ruining the country. He recruits a dozen men for what everyone understands is a suicide run, and the film patiently builds toward one of the most impressive action sequences ever committed to film. It's a nearly 45-minute battle where the 13 take on an army of more than 200 in a booby-trapped village.

If you love samurai movies, know that this one is every bit as good as the classics it's descended from. If you love Kurosawa, you'll enjoy "13 Assassins." And if you're unfamiliar, this is a good place to starting learning all about the samurai flicks that came before.

'Child 44' (2015)

Tom Hardy is Leo Demidov, a secret police officer in Stalin's Soviet Union whose life falls apart when he refuses to denounce his own wife. He then stumbles onto a string of child murders the state refuses to acknowledge. Exiled from his home and far out of town, Leo hunts down the killer anyway alongside a wary general played by Gary Oldman.

Based on Tom Rob Smith's bestselling novel and stacked with talent like Noomi Rapace and Joel Kinnaman, this bleak thriller is a heavy but entertaining watch that'll keep you on the edge of your seat.

'Mortal' (2020)

Eric (Nat Wolff) is a young American drifting through rural Norway who accidentally kills a local teenager with a power he doesn't understand and can't control. As a result, he finds himself hunted by the authorities. As a psychologist (Iben Akerlie) tries to work out what he actually is, it becomes clear that Eric's abilities are tied to something much older and stranger: Norse mythology and the gods that come with it.

From André Øvredal, the man behind the cult favorite "Trollhunter," this slow-burn action thriller has tons of exciting moments that'll have you begging for more when the credits roll.

Top shows and movies to stream tonight

NFL Melbourne Game: San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams (Netflix)

Genre: Live sports event

What it's about: This NFL season, Netflix is getting a game to start the year. In what's going to be just the second game of the 2026-27 regular season, the San Francisco 49ers are taking on the Los Angeles Rams, who are not only the Niners' division rival, but odds-on favorites to win the Super Bowl. These two won't be facing off in California, though. Instead, they're headed down to Melbourne for some (non-Aussie rules) football.

Why you should watch it: Last year, these two perennial Super Bowl contenders split their regular-season matchups. The Niners took home a close overtime victory in October, and then got blown out in the return match in November. It's anyone's guess who will come out on top this time, though as a Niners fan, I know who I'm pulling for.

'Colin from Accounts' season 3 (Paramount+)

Genre: Romantic comedy-drama series

What it's about: Ashley (Harriet Dyer) and Gordon (Patrick Brammall) have what must be the world's worst meet-cute. She flashed him her nipple, causing him to crash his car into a dog that they then rushed to a vet. Flash forward, and they've been living together, raising that dog. But a drunken proposal might have ended this star-crossed relationship for good.

Why you should watch it: "Colin from Accounts" is hilarious. It's one of the best comedy series of this decade so far. If you don't believe me, believe its 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes across all three seasons.

'Supergirl' (2026) (HBO Max)

Genre: DC superhero movie

What's it about? After debuting in "Superman," Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) returns to the DCU as the titular "Supergirl." In this adventure, she's decided to go out drinking ... over and over and over again, to celebrate her birthday and cope with the loss of her homeworld. But her birthday bender takes a turn when a young girl named Ruthye (Eve Ridley) draws Kara into a bloody quest for revenge.

Why you need to watch it: This DC movie is based on the incredible comic book run "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow." Which makes it all the more disappointing that it wasn't very good. But it's finally included in your HBO Max subscription. So if you were ever going to watch it, now's the time.

Hulu is an excellent choice for building your next weekend movie marathon. The streaming service regularly adds both originals and classics to its library. Plus, because it's owned by Disney, it's the home for new releases from several Disney-owned studios. It even has deals with some other studios to get new releases before any other service, whether they're produced by Disney or not.

This weekend, I'm starting with a pair of A24 movies. "Heretic" is a creepy horror movie with a killer Hugh Grant performance. But it might not be as eerie as "The Green Knight," though making a weird movie is nothing new for director David Lowery, as those who saw "Mother Mary" this year can attest. Finally, give "Together Together" a watch this weekend. It's a quirky comedy-drama that borders on rom-com and got rave reviews from fans and critics alike when it came out earlier this decade.

'Heretic' (2024)

Genre: Psychological horror movie

What's it about? "Heretic" stars Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East as two Mormon missionaries who think they've hit the jackpot when they arrive at the home of Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). He initially expresses interest in their faith, only to reveal he's really interested in questioning it. Because he thinks he's already found god.

Why you need to watch it: I love this movie. Or, more accurately, I love Hugh Grant's performance in it. He's an incredible horror villain, despite only using his words and a locked door as his weapons of choice for most of the film. The movie doesn't quite stick the landing, but the journey is more than worth it.

'The Green Knight' (2021)

Genre: Dark fantasy adventure movie

What's it about? "The Green Knight" is adapted from the 14th-century poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." In this tale, Sir Gawain (Dev Patel) answers the challenge of the Green Knight (Ralph Ineson) and takes the mysterious figure's head with Excalibur. But to his surprise, the Knight rises, grabs his severed head and declares that Gawain must now meet him in a year's time to receive the same blow in return.

Why you need to watch it: This movie is trippy. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it involves a seriously intense encounter with Joel Edgerton. But it's undeniably beautifully crafted. So if you've never seen "The Green Knight" before, now is your chance.

'Together Together' (2021)

Genre: Comedy-drama movie

What's it about? "Together Together" stars Ed Helms as Matt. He's in his forties and decidedly alone, so he hires Anna (Patti Harrison) to be the surrogate who carries his child. It's a strictly transactional relationship, but one that becomes complicated as the two find themselves unable to stop becoming friends with each other.

Why you should watch it: This movie flirts with being a rom-com just enough to build some tension, but never fully commits itself to romance. This film is, at its core, about platonic friendship instead. Just, in this instance, the platonic friends are having a child together.

Heavy rain coated the windows of my granny's house the night she let my brother and me watch "Gremlins" on VHS for the first time. It was Christmas, so the rainbow lights on the tree helped us feel braver than we were while watching this movie that was almost certainly too scary. She had an old fan heater on the upstairs landing that would sporadically clank and glow a little, making my imagination run wild that night. And I've loved the movie ever since.

There is a handful of movies everyone just assumes you’ve seen: "The Godfather," "Jaws," "Pulp Fiction." For most of my life, "Die Hard" sat right near the top of that list for me, filed under "I’ll get to it eventually" and gathering dust for roughly three decades.

Here’s my excuse, for whatever it’s worth: I’m not really an action person. Big guns, bigger explosions and a hero walking away from a helicopter crash just to deliver a one-liner? It’s fine, sure. And while some of my favorite movies and video games are actually very action-heavy, it’s just never been my go-to genre.

So while everyone around me was quoting "yippee-ki-yay" and relitigating every December whether "Die Hard" counts as a holiday film, I nodded along and prayed nobody would ask my thoughts on it or its sequels. For years, I had only absorbed the movie in fragments. I would have had to pull something out of thin air to survive a real conversation about it ... until I watched a particular episode of an Adult Swim cartoon.

In the "Rick and Morty" episode "Rick: A Mort Well Lived," Summer gets dropped into an arcade under attack by aliens and is instructed, with no further context, to "do a 'Die Hard.'" The joke, of course, is that Summer has never seen "Die Hard." She fumbles through a knockoff attempt, botches the iconic lines and crawls through air vents without really knowing why.

As silly as it sounds, that episode made me realize it was finally time to give the movie a shot. Now, I’m left wondering why it took most of my adult life to add it to my watchlist.

What I got wrong about 'Die Hard'

I expected a barrage of goofy noise, cheap explosions and one-liners delivered by Bruce Willis as he traipsed through air ducts. But that isn't "Die Hard" at all. Instead, it’s a tight, surprisingly funny thriller that’s far cleverer than its reputation as a "dumb action movie" ever led me to believe.

At times, it almost plays like a horror movie: one man trapped in a tower, picking off intruders while desperately trying not to die. The tension in those scenes had me holding my breath. It's a dynamic no one had ever hinted at: John McClane isn't a superhero; he’s just a regular guy.

Bruce Willis plays McClane as an exhausted cop who bleeds, feels pain, and spends half the film limping across shattered glass in his bare feet. He’s terrified the entire time, but he copes with humor. He’s just a dude who can’t believe his luck. Years of invincible action stars had made me numb to the genre, and I’d forgotten how compelling it is when a protagonist is genuinely vulnerable.

Then there’s Alan Rickman. I knew he was in it, though I mainly recognized him from "Harry Potter." What I didn't realize was that he practically invented the modern movie villain right here, in his very first film role. His Hans Gruber is so silky and sharp that you almost root for him; every scene he touches is positively electric. If you’d told me the best performance in an '80s action film belonged to a British theater actor playing a debonair thief, I wouldn't have believed you. Now I do.

So, was it worth the wait?

Embarrassingly, yes. "Die Hard" earns every bit of its reputation. I finally understand why people quote it, defend it and haul it out every single December.

Which brings me to the debate: Is it a Christmas movie? It takes place on Christmas Eve, centers on an office holiday party, and rolls the credits to "Let It Snow." So yes, obviously. I waited 30 years to form an opinion, and now that I have one, I’m standing by it: It is definitively a Christmas movie, and it’s better because of it.

If you’ve been quietly faking your way through "Die Hard" conversations like I was, consider this your sign. Stop "doing a Die Hard." Just watch the movie; it’s my early holiday gift to you.

Even if you keep it to just the best streaming services, there are dozens of new shows and movies added every day. Lucky for you, it's my job to know exactly what's out there. So I've compiled a TV guide on what to watch tonight.

'The Paper' season 2 (Peacock)

Genre: Mockumentary sitcom series

What's it about? "The Paper" centers around the Toledo Truth Teller, a small newspaper based in Toledo, Ohio. Normally, this small media outlet wouldn't garner much attention, but the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin in "The Office" has made it — and the paper's new editor-in-chief (Domhnall Gleeson) — their next subject.

Why you need to watch it: If you liked "The Office," this mockumentary is the same premise, just a different setting. People seem to like it too. Season 2 currently has an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 76 on Metacritic, the latter of which is an improvement over season 1.

'Last Seen' premiere (Apple TV)

Genre: Australian thriller miniseries

What's it about? Ian (Patrick Brammall) is an emergency dispatcher whose daughter went missing 11 years ago. But one night, he gets a call from a woman named Sarah (Chloe Jean Lourdes). Things take a shocking turn during their interaction when Sarah reveals her name might actually be Mags — Ian's daughter's name.

Why you need to watch it: This looks like a gripping thriller with a simple yet compelling premise. Apple has successfully produced similar thriller miniseries in the past, so I'm hopeful this one knocks it out of the park as well. So far, things seem promising; "Last Seen" is currently 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

'Reacher' season 4 (Prime Video)

Genre: Crime thriller series

What's it about? Alan Ritchson is back for another round as the titular Jack Reacher. In Season 4, he's investigating the death of a woman (Karen Kwong-Chip) that he witnessed in a Philadelphia subway car. Now, Reacher, a Philadelphia cop (Tamara Green) and the woman's brother (Christopher Rodriguez Marquette) are trying to learn why she took her own life. They just have to steer clear of the CIA and other deadly operators.

Why you need to watch it: I reviewed the "Reacher" season 4 premiere for Tom's Guide, and I've enjoyed the episodes that have come since. The show sticks to what made the past three seasons a success, and Ritchson has never been more perfectly cast as the hulking yet witty Jack Reacher.

For years, I figured I had a good enough understanding of the Rambo movies based on the Rambo parody from “Weird Al” Yankovic’s “UHF,” and I probably didn’t want to bother seeing the movies themselves. Even though I grew up on the action movies of Sylvester Stallone’s contemporaries (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme), I always passed by his Rambo movies in the video store in favor of something else. They seemed too cartoonish even by my admittedly low adolescent standards for action movies — and that’s without getting into the actual Rambo kids’ cartoon series.

So when I finally saw “First Blood” as an adult, it blew away every preconceived notion I had about what a Rambo movie could be. Although it was released in 1982, it’s the spiritual successor to the kind of downbeat, character-driven dramas that Hollywood produced in the 1970s, starring people like Gene Hackman and Al Pacino. There’s plenty of action, but it’s nothing like what Yankovic makes fun of in “UHF.” All of that stuff comes later, in the four movies to follow, but “First Blood” is a stark, well-crafted, and often moving film about a traumatized and mistreated veteran of the Vietnam War.

All five Rambo movies are streaming as of this month on Tubi, and I still wouldn’t recommend spending time on any of the sequels. But if, like me, you’ve been dismissive of Rambo as a character, you owe it to yourself to watch “First Blood” and experience the tragic, complex character study that started it all.

‘First Blood’ takes its protagonist’s struggle seriously

Stallone’s John Rambo begins “First Blood” as an unassuming drifter, walking toward a rustic house in the rural Pacific Northwest to the sounds of the plaintive acoustic guitar and horns of Jerry Goldsmith’s score. He’s not an overblown action hero, but just a lost soul searching for a friend, a man he served with in Vietnam. Rambo is shy and halting as he approaches a woman hanging laundry outside the home where he believes his friend lives, and he’s quietly devastated when he learns that the man has died of cancer, a result of the chemicals he was exposed to in Vietnam.

Even after he wanders into the ironically named town of Hope, Rambo isn’t looking for a fight, or even interested in talking to anyone. He just wants to stop for a bite to eat, and it’s the local sheriff, Will Teasle (Brian Dennehy), who stirs up trouble. Teasle doesn’t mince words with Rambo, deriding his “long” hair (which is still well above his shoulders) and his Army jacket with its American flag patch. “We don’t want guys like you in this town,” he says bluntly, before driving Rambo to the edge of town and strongly encouraging him to leave.

Although Rambo barely speaks, Stallone conveys the anguish he lives with every day, and his desperation for some kind of peace and normalcy. This quiet town seems like a place where a strong, silent man could find honest work, but the reality is that Vietnam veterans like Rambo were often shunned and mistreated, left to fend for themselves in a country that rejected them.

When he disobeys the sheriff’s orders and returns to Hope, Rambo is arrested and subjected to humiliating treatment from the cruel deputies. The experience triggers his PTSD, and that’s what sets off the violence, not any vengeance or premeditated attack.

‘First Blood’ is an action classic

While “First Blood” gives careful consideration to Rambo’s mental state, that doesn’t mean that it’s short on action. After escaping from police custody, Rambo takes refuge in the surrounding forest, improvising traps based on what he learned during his time in Vietnam. Rather than the bombastic, far-fetched action of the later Rambo movies, “First Blood” features methodically staged, mostly small-scale combat, and director Ted Kotcheff makes every confrontation count.

Even as he gets bigger and bolder with his retaliation, Rambo is always certain to avoid killing his adversaries, and the body count in “First Blood” is nearly zero, in contrast to the dozens of corpses in the later Rambo movies. That’s a reflection of the priorities of a character who just wants to be left alone, but can’t shake the training he received from Col. Sam Trautman (Richard Crenna), who turned him into a killing machine.

Trautman represents the military establishment that recruited and discarded guys like Rambo, and although he expresses sympathy for his former trainee, he’s ultimately just as responsible as Teasle for pushing Rambo to the edge. There’s plenty of excitement in the chases, shootouts and explosions that increase as “First Blood” goes on, but they’re all tinged with sadness, as expressions of Rambo’s inner turmoil.

That’s not a concern for any of the later, emptier Rambo movies, and it’s not something I expected when all I knew about the franchise was what I’d seen in parodies. But it’s what makes “First Blood” so effective, cementing it as one of the best movies ever made about the difficulties of veterans returning to civilian life. That’s more valuable than all of the crude Rambo action to follow.

September always feels like the real beginning of fall to me. The days start getting shorter and the rain seems to make a much more regular appearance, which can only mean one thing: It’s officially movie night season. There’s something about staying indoors while it’s cold and miserable outside that makes settling in for a great movie or an entire marathon even more appealing.

Paramount+ has added plenty of movies to its library this month, but with so much choice, deciding what to actually watch can be a challenge. I’ve gone through the September 2026 additions and picked out seven movies that deserve a spot on your watchlist. Each one has scored 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes, making them some of the most critically acclaimed options available. Of course, a strong Rotten Tomatoes rating doesn’t mean every movie will be to your taste, but it’s a pretty good place to start if you want something critics have largely enjoyed.

If you’re looking for something great to watch on Paramount+ this September, these seven movies are well worth adding to your list, and they all boast an impressive 90% or higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Argo’ (2012)

“Argo” is a historical drama-thriller directed by Ben Affleck and written by Chris Terrio. Based on declassified government accounts and Antonio Mendez’s memoir, “The Master of Disguise,” the film chronicles a covert joint U.S-Canadian extraction operation disguised as a fake Hollywood sci-fi movie production during the 1979-1981 Iran hostage crisis. This was Affleck’s third feature film as a director, and it once again proves that he’s just as talented behind the camera as he is in front of it, delivering an incredibly compelling film.

After six Americans escape the U.S. embassy in Tehran and hide at the Canadian ambassador’s home, CIA specialist Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) is tasked with getting them out of Iran. His unusual plan involves creating a fake science-fiction movie called Argo and posing the six Americans as members of a Canadian film crew scouting locations. With help from Hollywood producer Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin) and makeup artist John Chambers (John Goodman), Mendez builds the cover story before travelling to Tehran to lead the group out.

‘Creed’ (2015)

Ryan Coogler is one of the best directors working today, especially following the success of his recent movie “Sinners,” the best movie of 2025. But there’s no denying that his “Creed” trilogy is a huge technical achievement, while also delivering some powerful storytelling. The first film, released in 2015, functions as both a spin-off and a direct continuation of the long-running “Rocky” franchise. The movie revitalized the series by focusing on a new generation while still honoring its classic roots.

Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) is the son of former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who travels to Philadelphia to pursue a career as a professional boxer. Despite having no formal connection to his famous father, Adonis seeks out Apollo’s former rival and close friend, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), hoping he can train him. Rocky initially hesitates but eventually agrees to mentor the determined young fighter. As Adonis prepares for increasingly difficult fights, he works to establish himself in the boxing world.

‘Gone Baby Gone’ (2007)

We have another of Ben Affleck’s movies, “Gone Baby Gone,” this time starring his younger brother Casey in the lead role. Adapted from Dennis Lehane’s acclaimed 1998 novel of the same name, the film explores the dark underbelly of working-class Boston. Marking Affleck’s feature-length directorial debut, he co-wrote the screenplay alongside Aaron Stockard. The film proved to be a major critical turning point in Affleck’s career, establishing him as a serious filmmaking voice. It deserves every bit of the praise it received.

When 4-year-old Amanda McCready disappears from her Boston home, her mother hires private investigators Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) and Angie Gennaro (Michelle Monaghan) to help find her. Although the police are already investigating, Patrick and Angie become closely involved in the case, following leads through Amanda’s neighborhood and questioning people connected to her family. Their search takes them into Boston’s criminal underworld and uncovers information about Amanda’s disappearance that changes the direction of the investigation.

‘Love and Monsters’ (2020)

If you’re in the mood for a lighter movie, “Love and Monsters” should be on your watchlist this month. This monster adventure turns the usual dark and depressing post-apocalyptic story on its head, giving it a much more upbeat, funny and feel-good coming-of-age tone, which is arguably its biggest strength. Even the film’s visuals are compelling enough to keep you hooked, with its creature designs earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects alongside major blockbusters in 2021.

Seven years after an asteroid strike causes cold-blooded animals to mutate into gigantic monsters, most of humanity has been wiped out and the survivors live in underground colonies. Joel Dawson (Dylan O'Brien) has spent years hiding in one of these bunkers, separated from his high school girlfriend, Aimee (Jessica Henwick). When he discovers that Aimee is living in a coastal colony just 85 miles away, Joel decides to leave the safety of his bunker and travel across the monster-infested surface to find her.

‘Dunkirk’ (2017)

One of Christopher Nolan’s best movies has to be “Dunkirk,” a grand historical war film that reconstructs the monumental World War II evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches of France. Nolan structured the screenplay around three interwoven perspectives unfolding across distinct time scales: "The Mole" (land, spanning one week), "The Sea" (water, spanning one day) and "The Air" (sky, spanning one hour). It’s a pretty impressive and clever format that allows Nolan to tell the same story from three very different perspectives.

“Dunkirk” follows Allied soldiers trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk, France, during the Second World War as German forces close in around them. The film follows several groups caught up in the evacuation: a young British soldier desperately trying to escape, civilians sailing across the English Channel to help rescue stranded troops, and Royal Air Force pilots battling German aircraft overhead. Their stories unfold across the beach, sea and sky as thousands of soldiers wait for ships to arrive.

‘Edge of Tomorrow’ (2014)

For even more action, “Edge of Tomorrow” is the perfect watch. This intense sci-fi flick doesn’t do anything particularly new with the time loop trope, but what it does best is keep things seriously engaging, with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt showing great chemistry in between their moments of badassery. Sadly, the film underperformed at the box office when it was first released, but has since been hailed as one of the definitive sci-fi action films of the 2010s thanks to its solid pacing, inventive editing, and dark comedic timing.

Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is a military officer with no combat experience who is forced onto the front lines during a massive alien invasion. Cage is killed during the battle, only to wake up at the beginning of the same day. Trapped in a repeating time loop, he relives the battle over and over, gradually learning how to survive and fight back. After discovering that a Special Forces soldier, Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), has experienced something similar, Cage teams up with her to find a way to break the cycle and defeat the alien force before humanity is wiped out.

‘Galaxy Quest’ (1999)

It only felt right to end this list with a delightful comedy for anyone in need of a mood-booster. “Galaxy Quest” is a brilliant sci-fi comedy that satirizes cult television, conventions, and fan culture while treating fandom and genre tropes with affection. The film lovingly parodies sci-fi franchises like “Star Trek” while still standing on its own as a genuinely entertaining adventure. Plus, it boasts a pretty stacked cast who all clearly have fun with their roles, including Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Sam Rockwell.

“Galaxy Quest” follows the washed-up cast of a once-popular sci-fi TV series who are unexpectedly recruited by a group of aliens. Believing the actors are the real heroes they portrayed on television, the aliens ask them to help save their civilization from an evil warlord. Forced to leave their comfortable lives behind, the reluctant actors find themselves aboard a real spaceship and facing genuine danger. As they attempt to understand the alien technology and survive their mission, the group must work together to protect the Thermians.

Star Trek turns 60 today! Yes, one of the world's greatest and most long-running sci-fi franchises has been boldly going for six whole decades. So I've compiled a TV guide on what to watch tonight.

I've gone through everything from Netflix, Paramount+, HBO Max etc. I've scoured the best free streaming services like Tubi. I've even added some movies you might have missed in theaters that are finally available to buy or rent to stream at home.

'Mutiny' (2026) (PVOD)

Genre: Action thriller movie

What's it about? "Mutiny" stars Jason Statham as Cole Reed. He's a former London police officer and the head of security for KMG CEO Tibu Campallo (Ramon Tikaram) until he's framed for the shipping magnate's murder. Now, he's on a quest for vengeance against his boss's killers, but first he has to put an end to a human trafficking ring he stumbles across.

Why you should watch it: Do you like watching Jason Statham kill bad guys? Do you like watching Jason Statham kill bad guys on a ship? If you answered yes, then you need to watch "Mutiny."

'The Varnell Hill Show' season 1 (Paramount+)

Genre: Workplace comedy series

What it's about: Tommy Davidson charmed audiences as the larger-than-life talk show host Varnell Hill in the iconic sitcom "Martin." Now, decades after that beloved show, Davidson is back as Hill, and he's fighting to stay relevant in the ever-changing landscape of late-night television.

Why you should watch it: If you liked "Martin," you will certainly want to check out "The Varnell Hill Show." But even if you never saw the 90s sitcom, come for Davidson, who is hilarious with or without Martin Lawrence.

'Stavros Halkias: Uncle Stav' (Netflix)

Genre: Stand-up comedy special

What it's about: Stavros Halkias is one of Baltimore's favorite sons. Tonight, he's bringing his hometown to Netflix. In "Uncle Stav," he and director Matt Johnson, who directed Halkias in "Tony," are bringing a brand-new hour-long special, filmed at The Lyric theater in Baltimore. Expect topics like a family member coming out to a grandmother with memory issues, why we need more riots and more.

Why you should watch it: As a Maryland native myself, I'm proud to promote Halkias's work. I'd do it for free, and I'd do it even if it weren't always excellent. Luckily for me, Halkias is always excellent, so I can easily recommend this hour-long special as time well spent.

With “The Dog Stars” now in theaters, Ridley Scott is back in the sci-fi world that has defined so much of his legendary career. The post-apocalyptic thriller marks the director’s latest movie, but it’s his next potential return to the “Alien” universe that has really caught my attention. Scott recently confirmed that an “Alien: Covenant” sequel is in development, with Michael Fassbender’s David set to return and continue the story left hanging in 2017.

For me, there couldn’t be a better time to look back at Scott’s incredible filmography. He’s directed everything from sweeping historical epics and gritty crime dramas to some of the most influential science-fiction movies ever made. But there’s one film that will always stand above the rest for me. Scott directed my favorite film ever made, and it’s also the movie that sparked my love for one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time (probably an easy guess).

So, I’ve had the difficult task of ranking just seven of Ridley Scott’s best movies (he's directed 28 feature films). And while there are plenty of classics to choose from, No. 1 was never really in doubt.

7. ‘Thelma & Louise’ (1991)

If you had to name one of Ridley Scott’s most influential films in terms of cultural impact, “Thelma & Louise” would be a strong contender. This landmark road drama rightfully earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Director and Best Actress nominations for the seriously talented duo Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. Plus, the film’s climactic final image became one of the most famous and frequently referenced shots in modern pop culture.

“Thelma & Louise” follows best friends Thelma (Geena Davis), a housewife, and Louise (Susan Sarandon), a waitress, who leave Arkansas for a weekend getaway. Their trip takes a dramatic turn when Louise shoots a man who attempts to assault Thelma outside a roadside bar. Fearing they won’t be believed, the pair decide to flee to Mexico, setting off on a cross-country journey in their 1966 Ford Thunderbird. As police close in, they encounter a young drifter and find themselves caught up in a dangerous chase.

6. ‘The Last Duel’ (2021)

“The Last Duel” is a movie I don’t see mentioned very often on these ranking lists. Not only is it an epic historical drama, but it’s also one of the best medieval films. Based on Eric Jager’s 2004 book, the film tells the story of the last officially sanctioned judicial duel in 14th-century France.

The screenplay takes a clever three-part approach, showing the same series of events from three different perspectives. Each chapter offers a different version of what happened, gradually revealing how power and perception can shape the truth.

Set in 14th-century France, “The Last Duel” follows knight Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and his former friend Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), whose relationship turns bitter after Le Gris is accused of assaulting Jean’s wife, Marguerite (Jodie Comer).

Le Gris denies the accusation, but Marguerite stands by her account and Jean takes the case to King Charles VI. With the dispute unresolved, Jean challenges Le Gris to a trial by combat, with the two men ordered to fight to the death. Now, the two men must prepare for the final confrontation that will determine their fates.

5. ‘American Gangster’ (2007)

Denzel Washington is one of the greatest actors of his generation, and his performance in “American Gangster” is a perfect showcase of his talent. This crime drama chronicles the real-life rise and fall of Harlem drug kingpin Frank Lucas and the dedicated detective, Richie Roberts, who sets out to bring down his empire.

The project actually spent years in development before being canceled over budget concerns, only to be revived under Ridley Scott. Considering the final result, that might have been the best thing that could have happened.

Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) is a powerful drug lord who builds a heroin empire in 1970s Harlem by smuggling the drug directly from Southeast Asia. Working alongside his brother Huey (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and forging connections with figures such as mob boss Dominic Cattano (Armand Assante), Lucas expands his operation and gains influence.

Meanwhile, Detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) begins investigating the source of the city’s growing heroin supply. Roberts assembles a small, specially selected team to track Lucas and uncover his network.

4. ‘Black Hawk Down’ (2001)

The only reason I ever got around to watching “Black Hawk Down” was because my dad speaks so highly of it, and I’m glad I did. I’ve never been one to seek out war movies, but this quickly became one of my favorites in the genre.

It earned two Academy Awards for Best Sound and Best Film Editing, both of which were thoroughly deserved. Beyond its technical achievements and impressive ensemble cast, “Black Hawk Down” also stands out for the sheer scale of its production. It’s a gripping war movie that left a much bigger impression on me than I expected.

“Black Hawk Down” centers around a group of U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force soldiers sent into Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993 to capture two lieutenants of warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

What is expected to be a brief operation quickly goes wrong when two Black Hawk helicopters are shot down over the city. With soldiers trapped on the ground and surrounded by heavily armed militia fighters, the mission turns into a desperate effort to rescue the stranded crews and make it back to safety. The film stars Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Eric Bana and Tom Sizemore.

3. ‘The Martian’ (2015)

One of Matt Damon’s best movies has to be “The Martian.” Adapted from Andy Weir’s self-published 2011 debut novel of the same name, this sci-fi blockbuster is Ridley Scott’s highest-grossing film to date.

The production worked closely with NASA during development, which makes the film’s attention to detail even more impressive, and as a lover of all things space, I appreciate it even more. It also proves that Scott has a real knack for sci-fi movies given his strong track record in the genre.

After a mission to Mars goes disastrously wrong, astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead and accidentally left behind by his crew. With the rest of the team already on their way back to Earth, Watney finds himself stranded on the planet with limited supplies and no immediate way to contact NASA.

Using his knowledge of science and engineering, he begins working out how to survive long enough to be rescued. Back on Earth, NASA eventually discovers that Watney is alive and begins developing a plan to bring him home.

2. ‘Blade Runner’ (1982)

Of course, I had to include “Blade Runner” high up on this list. This sci-fi classic essentially created the visual template for the cyberpunk genre, and these iconic futuristic visuals have always been a personal favorite of mine.

What’s perhaps most surprising is that the movie received polarizing reviews and disappointing box office returns when it was first released, only to become a beloved cult classic in later years. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d highly recommend watching both “Blade Runner” and its 2017 sequel, “Blade Runner 2049.”

Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is a former police officer who is forced back into service as a “blade runner,” a detective tasked with tracking down and eliminating four escaped replicants, genetically engineered beings created to perform dangerous work in off-world colonies. The replicants have secretly returned to Earth in search of their creator, hoping to find a way to extend their limited lifespans.

As Deckard hunts them through a futuristic Los Angeles, his investigation brings him into contact with the powerful Tyrell Corporation and its employees, including the mysterious Rachael (Sean Young).

1. ‘Alien’ (1979)

It was only right to put my favorite film of all time in the top spot. “Alien” truly sparked my love for sci-fi and movies in general, and ever since I was first introduced to this franchise, it has been a genuine obsession of mine.

Scott created something truly special here, and its success was so huge that it spawned several sequels and prequels, but the original 1979 film is the greatest to me. Sigourney Weaver will always be an iconic final girl, with Ian Holm, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright and Yaphet Kotto all giving us unforgettable characters.

“Alien” follows the crew of the commercial spaceship Nostromo as they travel back to Earth after intercepting a mysterious transmission from an unexplored planet. Following company protocol, the crew investigates the source of the signal and discovers a vast, abandoned spacecraft containing strange eggs.

When one of the crew members encounters the eggs, a creature attaches itself to him, leading to a terrifying chain of events aboard the Nostromo. As the crew attempts to understand what they have brought aboard, they find themselves hunted by a rapidly evolving extraterrestrial creature.

It’s set to be another busy week for new movies across the best streaming services. Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max and Starz have fresh flicks for subscribers to enjoy, while a trio of options arrives on premium streaming. Whatever your tastes, there’s sure to be a movie for you.

I suspect this week’s most popular new movie will be Tyler Perry’s latest project on Netflix, which sees him return to his 2000s comedy-drama series, “Why Did I Get Married?” Meanwhile, HBO Max adds “Supergirl” to its library, and Hulu has a dark thriller from the director of “The Platform.” On PVOD, there’s a Disney remake, a Jason Statham action movie and a rom-com the internet dubbed “‘The Purge’ but for sex” over the summer.

There are plenty of new options to consider this week, so I’m highlighting the most noteworthy new arrivals to help you spend more time watching movies and less time scrolling through streaming service libraries. And we’ve also got a guide to the top new TV shows this week, too.

‘Moana’ (PVOD)

Disney’s latest live-action remake was perhaps its most unnecessary yet. The original animated “Moana” is just a decade old, with a sequel landing in 2024. There hasn’t been enough time yet for audiences to get nostalgic about Moana, and the movie’s poor box office takings appear to reinforce that idea. It grossed $315 million, which sounds like a lot, but with a $250 million budget, it’s not even close to profitable. Maybe it’ll swim on digital?

If you’ve seen the original “Moana,” you know the deal here; this family-friendly adventure follows the eponymous heroine (Catherine Laga'aia) as she embarks on an ocean odyssey to save her island from a curse. She’s joined on her quest by demi-goal Maui (Dwayne Johnson, reprising his role from the original). The foundations are still solid, but in a world where the animated “Moana” exists, there’s little need for this live-action adaptation.

‘Mutiny’ (PVOD)

The rollout of Jason Statham’s new action-thriller “Mutiny” was noteworthy because Amazon accidentally leaked the movie by putting it up on Prime Video for several hours. It was eventually removed, and now it’s heading to streaming in an official capacity. “Mutiny” offers viewers exactly what you’d expect from a Statham-led action movie. The British actor plays a former military man, now working as a bodyguard, drawn into a criminal conspiracy.

In “Muntiny,” Cole Reed (Statham) must spring into action when his billionaire boss is murdered, and he’s framed for the crime. Stowing away on a cargo ship, he uncovers a criminal plot and must bring down those responsible, while also clearing his name. The boat setting adds a degree of novelty (fortunately it’s better than “Speed 2”), but otherwise "Mutiny" is a very predictable and unambitious action-thriller with Statham largely going through the motions.

‘One Night Only’ (PVOD)

“One Night Only” made a lot of waves online thanks to its high-concept premise. This romantic comedy is set in a world in which the United States government has outlawed premarital sex. But to avoid public backlash, for one night a year, during a 12-hour window, sex is permitted. The internet dubbed this “‘The Purge’ but for sex,” and it’s certainly a kooky idea for a movie. However, beyond the novel setup, this is a very cliché rom-com.

Callum Turner plays Owen, an NYC pizza shop owner, who is dumped by his girlfriend just as the 12-hour window begins. At the same time, Allie (Monica Barbaro) is across town, looking for a meaningful connection on a night where everybody wants to hook up. Naturally, their paths cross, sparks fly, and you can probably guess where it goes from here. Turner’s leading man credentials are unconvincing, but Barbao has effortless charm.

‘Why Did I Get Married Again?’ (Netflix)

Tyler Perry is one of Netflix’s most dependable collaborators. His popular Madea character and spin-offs like "Joe’s College Road Trip,” which hit Netflix in February, always go down a treat with subscribers. However, Perry’s latest Netflix project doesn’t feature the loud-mouthed aunt; instead he’s returning to his 2007 comedy-drama “Why Did I Get Married?” for a long-awaited second sequel, “Why Did I Get Married Again?”

Following on from 2010’s “Why Did I Get Married Too?,” this revival again explores long-term relationships, and the various hurdles faced once a couple becomes husband and wife. Several original cast members return, including Perry, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Michael Jai White and Tash Smith, though Janet Jackson is absent this time. Critics were never hot on this franchise, but Perry has a strong track record of appealing to viewers.

‘Supergirl’ (HBO Max)

The second feature film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe was an outright box office bomb, grossing $126 million against an estimated budget of $170-180 million. But the hope will be that Supergirl can take flight on HBO Max. While I didn’t find “Supergirl” worthy of a cinema trip, it’s far from the worst comic-book movie released in recent years. Milly Alcock is excellent as the titular hero, and it’s perhaps worth watching ahead of “Man of Tomorrow” landing in theaters next summer. Alcock’s Kara Zor-El is confirmed to appear in the "Superman" sequel.

Based on the fan-favorite “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic book, Kara Zor-El hasn’t taken to being a world-saving hero like her cousin Clark Kent (aka Superman). Instead, Supergirl spends her days aimlessly wandering between planets and visiting dive bars. But she’s forced to adopt the hero lifestyle when a ruthless villain emerges. She teams up with a young survivor (Eve Ridley) to dish out some justice and save her fan-favorite dog, Krypto.

‘Rich Flu’ (Hulu)

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, director of Netflix’s “The Platform,” delivers another thriller that explores class divide, but this time it’s the 1% under the spotlight. The cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rafe Spall, and while the reviews have been mixed (it’s currently rated 50% on Rotten Tomatoes), I’m always willing to check out a movie with satirical bite.

Laura (Elizabeth Winstead) is reaching a career peak when a mysterious virus emerges. This disease selectively targets the ultra-wealthy. Overnight, having wealth becomes a death sentence, which leads the most well-off in society to desperately try to give away their vast fortunes to avoid their demise. With the virus making its way down the wealth ladder, Laura embarks on a desperate journey across the globe to save her family.

‘In the Grey’ (Starz)

Starz doesn’t always get the same level of attention as the likes of Netflix, Prime Video and the rest of the biggest streamers, but this week it’ll hope to get its share of the spotlight as it drops a new movie, “In the Grey.” This action-thriller has quite the cast, including Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza Gonzalez and Rosamund Pike, and it comes from writer/director Guy Ritchie. So there’s lots of talent in front of and behind the camera.

It’s the start of a new week, and the Prime Video top 10 most-watched list has been updated. This ever-changing ranking gives you a quick look at the movies drawing the most attention on the streaming service. However, popularity doesn’t automatically mean high quality.

That’s why I’ve combed through today’s Prime Video top 10 and picked out three movies worth adding to your watch list. Well, actually, I’ve selected two movies that deserve your attention, and one that is only for the morbidly curious who enjoy watching a misfire. If you like “so bad, it’s good” movies, then the current Prime Video No. 1 might appeal to you.

These are the standouts of the Prime Video most-watched list right now. And one final note: this article is based on the Prime Video top 10 as of Monday, September 7. Here are my three picks…

Best Prime Video top 10 movies to stream right now

‘The Runner’ (2026)

Prime Video’s new original thriller “The Runner” set an unwanted record last week when it received the worst reviews of Gal Gadot’s career. The movie holds a miserable 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, you’re probably asking why I’ve included it here, and honestly, it’s because there’s something morbidly interesting about watching a trainwreck. Critics have labeled it “lazy,” “tedious,” and “dumb as dirt.” So watch at your own peril.

Described by Prime Video as a “pulse-pounding psychological thriller,” Gadot plays a high-powered lawyer whose ordinary world is thrown into chaos when a mysterious caller (Damian Lewis) informs her that her son has been kidnapped. Given a series of commands, she must race through London to complete them; otherwise her son will be murdered. It’s a race-against-the-clock thriller with some seriously sloppy execution.

‘Good Fortune’ (2025)

Keanu Reeves might be extremely good at playing a kick-butt action hero, but he’s also got serious comedic chops. It’s the latter on display in “Good Fortune,” a pleasing comedy written and directed by Aziz Ansari. This movie has its heart in the right place, even if its commentary on wealth inequality and class divide feels a little flawed. Still, it’s got a fun high-concept premise and features Ansari alongside Reeves, Seth Rogan and Keke Palmer.

Arj (Ansari) is an aspiring filmmaker, but stuck working low-paid jobs just to keep his head above water. One such job is working as an assistant for a wealthy venture capitalist, Jeff (Rogen). But when Jeff fires Arj, the gig-worker hits rock bottom. In steps Gabriel (Reeves), a low-level guardian angel desperate to prove himself to his superiors. When Gabriel meddles in Arj's and Jeff's lives, he makes a mess that requires a lot of cleanup.

‘Project Hail Mary' (2026)

“Project Hail Mary” arrived on Prime Video on July 3, and it’s been a mainstay of the top 10 ever since. Naturally, it’s starting to slip down the list after more than two months on the platform, but if you still haven’t watched it, you really should make it a priority. I rewatched it over the weekend for the third time, and it continues to delight each time. Based on the Andy Weir novel of the same name, it’s a dazzlingly entertaining sci-fi movie that ranks among the year’s best.

The movie opens with Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) awaking from an induced coma onboard an interstellar spaceship, several light-years from Earth. Clearly, he’s millions of miles away from home for a reason, but the problem is, he can’t remember his mission, or even his name. What follows is a thrilling blockbuster in which the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance.

I’ve always appreciated a good thriller, but there’s something particularly special about the thrillers that came out of the 1980s. From “Fatal Attraction” and “The Untouchables” to “Scarface” and “Blade Runner,” the decade gave us some seriously unforgettable films.

Grief makes people do strange things, but few movies literalize that quite like "Life After Beth," a zombie comedy in which a man's dead girlfriend comes back to life. He decides, perhaps stupidly, to just go with it.

This 2014 A24 movie is the directorial debut of the late Jeff Baena, and it premiered at Sundance with a stacked cast. Aubrey Plaza plays Beth, who dies on a hike and then inexplicably turns up alive at her parents' house days later. Dane DeHaan is her grieving boyfriend who gets the second chance he's been praying for. He wasn't quite expecting to have to date a zombie, though.

John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon play Beth's cagey parents, with Anna Kendrick and Matthew Gray Gubler as a supporting cast. It's a bit uneven and more than a little strange, but it's worth it for one of Aubrey Plaza's most unhinged performances. If you want something offbeat to stream tonight, you're in luck because "Life After Beth" is streaming free on Pluto TV.

What is 'Life After Beth' about?

Zach Orfman (Dane DeHaan) is falling apart. His girlfriend Beth (Aubrey Plaza) just died from a snakebite while hiking alone, and he can't move on. The only people who seem to understand are Beth's parents, Maury and Geenie (John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon). Zach starts spending his days with them, bonding over the girl they all lost. Then, out of nowhere, they stop answering the door.

When Zach finally forces his way in, he finds Beth alive, sitting in her parents' house as if nothing happened. There's just one problem: She has no memory of dying. Maury and Geenie are hiding her, and they beg Zach to keep the secret. He's thrilled since he gets to be with the woman he thought he'd lost, and this time he swears he'll do everything right. But Beth is different now. She's clingy, then volatile, unnaturally strong, and her skin is starting to rot.

As Beth's condition worsens, it becomes clear she isn't a miracle so much as the first sign of something much bigger. She isn't alone. More people around town are coming back too. It's a full-blown zombie apocalypse, and Zach has to face the thing his grief kept him from admitting that the girl he loves is already gone and she's not coming back.

Why I recommend you stream 'Life After Beth'

Anyone who's lost someone knows the impossible ache that comes with grief. You just want one more day, one more chance to get it right with the person you loved. "Life After Beth" takes that longing literally. Sure, it's a zombie comedy, but it's really about how hard it is to let go of a person, even when every part of you knows you should.

It uses a secret weapon to get this message across: Aubrey Plaza. She throws herself completely into Beth's decay and plays it completely straight. It's a physical and very funny performance, and she almost single-handedly makes the whole thing worth watching.

Her parents are on point in terms of casting, too. John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon are funny but heartbreaking as parents who would rather have a monstrous version of their daughter than no daughter at all.

"Life After Beth" is a weird, messy, oddly moving little movie that lingers longer than a zombie comedy has any right to. If you want something offbeat and darkly funny to put on tonight, and you're up for watching Aubrey Plaza go completely for broke, put this on and be ready to add it to your list of favorite A24 flicks.

If you're looking to find what new movies and shows Netflix is adding this week, I've got you covered. The streaming service is adding just 15 new movies, shows and live events this week. That's not necessarily a lot to sort through, but you're still going to want some advice on which select few deserve making it onto your watchlist.

Lucky for you, I've got you covered. Top of the list for me is "Stavros Halkias: Uncle Stav," which is the newest stand-up special from the "Tires" star. You're also going to want to set a reminder for 8:35 p.m. ET on September 10. That's when the NFL Melbourne Game: San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams kicks off down under.

Aside from these two events, some fan favorites are returning with new installments. "Call My Agent!" returns with "Call My Agent! 'Stavros Halkias: Uncle Stav'

Genre: Stand-up comedy special

What it's about: Stavros Halkias is a Baltimore legend, and he's bringing his hometown to Netflix this week. In "Uncle Stav," he and director Matt Johnson, who directed Halkias in "Tony," taped a brand-new hour-long special at The Lyric theater in Baltimore. Expect topics like a family member coming out to a grandmother with memory issues, which you can watch in the trailer above.

Why you should watch it: As a Maryland native myself, I'm proud to plug Halkias's work, and I'd do it even if it weren't always excellent. Luckily, Halkias is hilarious, so I'm not worried about this hour-long special being anything less than time well spent.

NFL Melbourne Game: San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams

Genre: Live sports event

What it's about: This NFL season, Netflix is getting a game to start the year. In what's going to be just the second game of the 2026-27 regular season, the San Francisco 49ers are taking on the Los Angeles Rams, who are not only the Niners' division rival, but odds-on favorites to win the Super Bowl. These two won't be facing off in California, though. Instead, they're headed down to Melbourne for some (non-Aussie rules) football.

Why you should watch it: Last year, these two perennial Super Bowl contenders split their regular-season matchups. The Niners took home a close overtime victory in October, and then got blown out in the return match in November. It's anyone's guess who will come out on top this time, though as a Niners fan, I know who I'm pulling for.

'Call My Agent! The Movie' (2026)

Genre: French comedy-drama movie

What it's about: "Call My Agent! The Movie" is set five years after the ASK Agency closed in "Call My Agent!," the series. Andréa (Camille Cottin) is now a director looking to make her feature debut, but just days before filming, she loses her lead actor. Now, she has to bring her ASK team back together to save the production.

Why you should watch it: "Call My Agent!" is probably the most beloved show to come out of France in years. Certainly one of the most beloved. I loved it, and I cannot wait to see more from that world, even if it's a feature film rather than a full season.

'Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?' (2026)

Genre: Comedy-drama movie

What it's about: In "Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?," Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White) summon their closest friends to Europe, 16 years after the events of "Why Did I Get Married?" This time, the wedding is their daughter Jasmine’s (Armani Greer), who is about to marry Wesley (Everett Osborne).

Why you should watch it: If you like Tyler Perry, this movie seems like it will be for you. Especially with the talented Taraji P. Henson joining the cast this time around. Perry's rarely my go-to filmmaker, but I'm fully aware he's got an ardent following. So if his movies are a must-watch for you, make sure to add this to your watchlist.

'Dang!' season 1

Genre: Animated adult comedy series

What it's about: “Dang!" centers around the Dang family: Ruthie (Stephanie Hsu), Andrew (Andrew Law) and Eunice (Poppy Liu). The latter two have been living fun, carefree lives in New York City. But it all comes to a screeching halt when their older sister, Ruthie, shows up and wants to hang out with them ... because she had an affair, got pregnant and is getting a divorce.

Why you should watch it: For a certain type of comedy fan, "Dang!" should be right up your alley. If you like "Big Mouth," "Mating Season," "Bojack Horseman," etc., then this animated adult comedy show from Michael Schur is a must-watch. If you're not typically one for animated shows, he's also the guy who produced "The Office" and co-created "Parks and Recreation", "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and The Good Place." So you're in good hands if you choose to watch "Dang!"

'A Tale of Two Cities' (MGM+)

Genre: Historical drama limited series

What it's about: Set in London in 1782, "A Tale of Two Cities" follows Lucie Manette (Mirren Mack), who learns that her father, whom she believed had been dead for 20 years, may be alive after all. But when the messenger delivering the news, Charles Darnay (François Civil), gets arrested, so turns to troubled lawyer Carton (Kit Harington) to free him and get back on track to find her dad against the backdrop of the French Revolution.

Why you should watch it: Early reviews have been positive to middling for the first small-screen adaptation of Charles Dickens' seminal novel in almost four decades. It has all the hallmarks of a classic Dickens tale: a colorful cast of characters, breathless cliffhangers, and surprising twists along with sharp social commentary.

'The Lioness' (Paramount+)

Genre: Spy thriller series

What's it about? “Lioness” stars Zoe Saldaña as CIA operative Joe McNamara, who oversees the Lioness program, a female-led initiative that sends undercover operatives into the war on terror. Once embedded, these agents get close to the women in their targets’ lives, using those relationships to gain access to their inner circle and ultimately take down high-value threats.

Why you need to watch it: In season 3, Joe's been battling enemy combatants abroad and betrayals at home. Episode 6 finally introduces this season's main villain after an eyebrow-raising fifth episode.

'Lanterns' (HBO Max)

Genre: Superhero, detective fiction, neo-Western series

What's it about? Veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) head to rural Nebraska to investigate a murder, only to stumble into a cosmic conspiracy. Their prickly mentor-protégé dynamic brings some buddy-cop friction to the mix as they face off with Sinestro, Guy Gardner, alien worlds and the shape-shifting threat of the Manhunters.

Why you need to watch it: After the last episode took a detour to flesh out John Stewart's deeply troubling origin story, this episode should finally provide answers for that big Episode 2 cliffhanger. With only two episodes after this to go, you still have time to catch up before the big finale on October 4.

It’s arguably never been a better time to be a fan of the “Alien” franchise. 2024’s “Alien: Romulus” reinvigorated the sci-fi series on the big screen, “Alien: Earth” season 2 is in production for Hulu, and Alien: Isolation 2 is in active development, a sequel to the best Alien video game ever.

As a superfan of the Xenomorph, who ranks “Alien” as their favorite movie, I should be on cloud nine at present. But the news last week that Ridley Scott, director of “Alien,” “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant,” is returning to the franchise, because in his words, he “thinks it needs some help,” has sent a cold shiver down my spine. Sorry, Ridley, but I wish you’d stay away.

I have so much respect for what Ridley Scott has given "Alien" fans; after all, he helmed the untouchable masterpiece that kick-started the franchise I hold so close to my heart, but in the modern era, a clean break was needed. “Romulus” represented a fresh start, but now things look more precarious than ever. Here’s why I’m very worried for the future of “Alien.”

Covenant put the franchise on the brink

Released in the spring of 2017, “Alien: Covenant” did quite significant brand damage to “Alien.” That’s a little hard for me to admit. I spent a great many years defending the movie. It was the first named “Alien” flick I saw on the big screen (discounting “Prometheus”). I was born in 1995, so I was either not alive yet or too young to see the previous “Alien” movies in theaters.

But the numbers don’t lie; viewers didn’t warm to this sixth mainline entry in the franchise. It holds a weak 55% viewer score on Rotten Tomatoes, and even if you discount that, the box office figures ($240 million worldwide on a $110 million budget) paint a stark picture. "Covenant" underwhelmed.

Almost a decade on, my defence has fallen, and I can admit that “Alien: Covenant” just isn’t a particularly good movie. Its narrative is conflicted, trying to be both a follow-up to “Prometheus,” which was a prequel set in the universe but sans the Xeno, and also a full-blooded “Alien” movie. Its characters make frustratingly illogical decisions all too often, its screenplay is muddled (the infamous flute scene is mocked for good reason), and the chilling terror of the Xenomorph itself is blunted as it becomes something more akin to a relentless Terminator rather than a stalking alien creature.

Even the movie’s supposed saving grace, Michael Fassbender’s calculating android, David 8, is less compelling than he was in “Prometheus” (which has its own issues, but I still maintain is a good movie). “Covenant” put the series, at least cinematically, in a tricky place, and considering the financial return, it’s perhaps not surprising that the final chapter of Scott’s planned prequel trilogy entered cryostasis, seemingly never to see the light of day.

“Prometheus” was, to put it kindly, divisive (the "Prometheus School of Running” was a popular, mocking meme post-premiere), and “Alien: Covenant” was largely rejected by viewers; it was clear to see that “Alien” needed some fresh blood, and fortunately that’s exactly what we got.

Romulus deserves a proper follow-up

Post Disney’s acquisition of “Alien” franchise owner 21st Century Fox in 2019, it was confirmed that “Alien” was part of the House of Mouse’s future plans — does this mean we can technically consider Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley a Disney Princess? — and half a decade later, we got “Alien: Romulus.” In my opinion, the very best modern “Alien” movie by a wide margin.

I’ve written many words about my appreciation for “Romulus” before (as has my fellow “Alien” fan colleague, Alix Backburn), so I won’t retread old ground (too much), but with a new director, Fede Álvarez, in post and two new compelling protagonists, Rain Carradien (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson), it was the semi-reboot the series needed. It’s connected to what came before, but (re)birthed the Xenomorph for a new generation.

Rain and Andy are characters who deserve to appear again, and “Romulus” leaves them in a spot where further encounters with the Xenomorph won’t feel all that contrived. Álvarez confirmed in promotional interviews that he had sequel ideas in mind, and in February of last year suggested he was working on a script with production even penciled in for later in 2025.

Then in September, it was announced that Álvarez had stepped down as director of “Romulus 2”, and here’s where things start to get messy as unconfirmed accusations and theories that Ridley was meddling pop up.

The situation is increasingly messy

Even as a fan who closely follows the “Alien” universe, right now, I genuinely couldn’t tell you what is actually going on with the series on the big screen.

World of Reel reported in July this year that the follow-up to “Alien: Romulus” had been shelved. The publication cited unnamed sources claiming that behind-the-scenes friction between Álvarez and Scott over the use of Fassbender’s David had put the project in jeopardy.

There were also issues with cast availability, now that Jonsson has signed onto “Black Panther 3” and Spaeny was being eyed for the role of Rogue in “X-Men.” (“Obsession’s” Inde Navarrette was later confirmed to be filling the role.) Whether Spaney was ever in contention remains a mystery.

The report also claimed that Brian Duffield, writer/director of the upcoming “Whalefall” from 20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox), has been placed in charge of a separate “Alien” movie that will “distance itself from ‘Romulus.’” Then, to muddy the waters further, 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell responded to these reports with a single-word social media post, “nope.” Suggesting “Romulus 2” was still on, in some form.

See what I mean about things getting messy, and we’ve not even circled back to Ridley Scott’s recent interview comments yet. While promoting his new movie “The Dog Stars” (side note: it’s just as haphazard and unfocused as “Alien: Covenant”), Scott told French media outlet AlloCiné:

"I'm rewriting the next Alien film. Actually, I suddenly went back and got involved. The one that just came out [Alien: Romulus], it was OK. I think it needs some help. So, I've gone back in."

He also confirmed that he would be picking up where “Prometheus” and “Covenant” left off by continuing the story of Fassbender's David 8 and exploring AI “going off the rails.” Presumably this would be the resurrection of “Covenant 2,” which failed to materialize all those years ago.

I’m just a fan, but I cannot understand the logic of this decision if true. In “Alien: Romulus,” the franchise has found a second wind, a base to build off. Yes, it had flaws, such as leaning far too heavily on nostalgic callbacks. However, the fandom and the general audience warmly embraced Rain and Andy, and I suspect the majority want to see them both return.

Yet, if Scott is to be believed, he has been given the keys to the kingdom again, to finish off what increasingly feels like a vanity project. Some of my fellow “Alien” superfans might yearn for David 8’s story to be concluded, but “Covenant” clearly alienated a great many viewers, and picking that narrative strand back up after a successful break away seems illogical.

Where does 'Alien' go from here?

What’ll happen next? Who knows. Perhaps “Romulus 2” will be fast-tracked. Maybe Brian Duffield’s unconfirmed separate “Alien” project will send the series in a new direction. Perhaps Ridley Scott will finish what he started and deliver a trilogy capper worthy of (allegedly) mothballing wherever Álvarez wanted to go next. Granted, I wouldn’t bet on the last one.

Either way, as a fan looking at the situation from the outside, it read to me like “Alien” is falling victim to Hollywood politics as various creatives vie for control of the sci-fi juggernaut. Will all this reported behind-the-scenes drama lead to another great “Alien” movie, which is ultimately all I really want? I’m not so sure, but fingers crossed whenever the Xenomorph returns to movie theaters it’s in a project worthy of the “Alien” name.

And, hey, the franchise survived both “Alien: Resurrection” and “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem.” It’s endured dark days before and already proved its remarkable resilience. Even if whatever comes next disappoints, I’m confident there will always be demand for more “Alien” movies.

I'm a sucker for a disaster flick. Admittedly, these films get notoriously bad ratings from audiences and poor reviews from critics. But I can't resist a movie where the wildest weather-based problems slam into our little blue-and-green planet, causing absolute chaos — with the solution to save us all discovered by just a handful of people. The high stakes and overdone special effects make these films the ultimate popcorn flick experience.

One of my absolute favorites in the genre is "2012." Released in 2009, the movie spotlights a single family struggling to find safety as the world literally collapses around them. Directed by disaster-movie master Roland Emmerich (also known for "The Day After Tomorrow"), the film balances destruction with a generous dose of camp.

Starring John Cusack and Amanda Peet, this movie reaches peak popcorn-flick status by leaning into its sheer scale. It delivers maximum spectacle, high-octane thrills and standard apocalyptic tropes turned up to 11. And you can take it all in right now on Hulu.

What is '2012' about?

The film opens in India, where scientist Dr. Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) learns from fellow researcher Satnam Tsurutani (Jimi Mistry) that massive solar flares are unleashing rare neutrinos that heat up the Earth's core. Adrian rushes back to Washington, D.C., to convince White House Chief of Staff Carl Anheuser (Oliver Platt) that a massive geological emergency is underway. Soon, President Thomas Wilson (Danny Glover) secretly convenes world leaders to build massive escape arks, selling seats to the ultra-wealthy for millions while keeping the public completely in the dark.

Fast-forward to the year 2012: Struggling writer Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) heads out on a camping trip to Yellowstone with his kids, Lilly and Noah. Finding the park cordoned off by the military, Jackson briefly encounters Dr. Helmsley before running into Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson), an eccentric conspiracy theorist running a wild radio show. Charlie reveals the secret plot by world leaders to flee on hidden arks, a theory that sounds totally insane until a catastrophic earthquake strikes, proving him terrifyingly correct.

Jackson races home, gathers his kids, his ex-wife Kate (Amanda Peet), and her new husband, Gordon (Tom McCarthy), and makes a mad dash for an airplane. As highways, skyscrapers, and entire cities collapse around them, the film's jaw-dropping special effects take off. From there, Jackson is determined to navigate the armageddon to keep his family alive, leaving one big question: How can an ordinary family secure a spot on escape arks built strictly for the world's elite?

Why I recommend you stream '2012'

Everything about "2012" is gloriously over the top. Emmerich manages to squeeze virtually every imaginable natural disaster into a single runtime, unleashing catastrophic volcanoes, towering tsunamis, and world-splitting earthquakes. The special effects render the sheer scale of the destruction in shockingly vivid detail.

The performances hold up surprisingly well against the ridiculous premise and far-fetched science. John Cusack, Amanda Peet, and the young actors perfectly capture how ordinary people would react to total cataclysm. Cusack has always excelled at playing an everyday guy thrown into extraordinary circumstances, and he brings that signature grounded charm here.

The shifting perspectives also keep the hefty two-and-a-half-hour runtime moving at a breakneck pace. High-level political drama is constantly juxtaposed with visually stunning sequences of iconic landmarks across Europe and the United States being completely leveled. Danny Glover is exceptionally grounded as President Wilson, bringing genuine gravity and warmth to a leader who refuses to abandon his people.

Despite its length, "2012" is well worth the ride if you love disaster cinema or simply want a big-budget movie where you can turn your brain off and enjoy the spectacle. It’s no more far-fetched than your average blockbuster action or sci-fi film. If you're the type of viewer who insists on strict scientific accuracy, you might find yourself rolling your eyes. But if you don't mind the laws of physics being stretched for pure, unadulterated entertainment, this is one blockbuster you shouldn't miss.

I have a soft spot for ’90s movies. There’s something about the films from this decade that makes them incredibly easy to return to, whether it’s a movie you watched constantly growing up or one you somehow missed the first time around. Thankfully, Netflix has a solid selection of ’90s favorites available to stream, giving you plenty of excuses to put your current watchlist on hold for a little while.

I’ve spent some time looking through Netflix’s current library to pick out five ’90s movies that are particularly worth your time. From classic crime thrillers to memorable comedies and tense dramas, this list has a little bit of everything. So, if you’re tired of scrolling and want something that comes with a heavy dose of nostalgia, here are five movies I’d happily recommend adding to your watchlist.

‘A League of Their Own’ (1992)

“A League of Their Own” is a beloved comedy-drama that remains one of the highest-grossing sports movies centered on women in cinema history. In fact, Penny Marshall became the first female director in Hollywood history to have two consecutive films cross $100 million at the box office, following “Big.” If you’re in need of a mood-booster packed with iconic one-liners, a charming cast and memorable screen chemistry, “A League of Their Own” deserves a spot on your watchlist.

Set in 1943, sisters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) are recruited to join the newly formed All-American Girls Professional Baseball League while many of the country’s male players are serving overseas during World War II. The sisters join the Rockford Peaches, a team filled with talented players from across the country, and are coached by Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), a former baseball star whose career has fallen apart. As the Peaches begin attracting crowds and attention, Dottie emerges as one of the league’s standout players, while Kit struggles to establish herself on the team.

‘Fargo’ (1996)

Anyone who thinks of a classic crime thriller is likely to think of “Fargo,” the neo-noir black comedy crime film written, produced, directed, and edited by Joel and Ethan Coen. Set against the snowy, desolate landscapes of Minnesota and North Dakota, the movie is widely regarded as one of the Coen brothers’ defining masterpieces. It’s so iconic that it inspired the critically acclaimed FX anthology series “Fargo,” which launched in 2014 and expands on the film’s signature dark humor and tone.

Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is a financially troubled car salesman who hires two criminals, Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare), to kidnap his wife and demand a ransom from her wealthy father. Jerry plans to keep much of the money for himself, but the scheme quickly spirals out of control when the kidnappers become involved in multiple murders. As the police investigate, pregnant Brainerd Police Chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) begins piecing together the clues and follows the trail back to Jerry and his increasingly chaotic plan.

‘Cruel Intentions’ (1999)

Another film that eventually received the TV adaptation treatment years later is “Cruel Intentions,” the stylish and provocative teen drama starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon. The movie actually serves as a late-1990s modern adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s famous 1782 French novel, but Roger Kumble reimagined the source material as an ultra-glamorous tale set among Manhattan’s upper-crust prep-school crowd. Safe to say, it’s proved its enduring cult status as one of the most memorable teen noir movies of its era.

Wealthy Manhattan step-siblings Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) and Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) are two popular students at an elite private school who enjoy manipulating those around them. When Kathryn challenges Sebastian to seduce Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), the daughter of their new headmaster, he eagerly accepts the bet. Meanwhile, Kathryn has her own scheme involving Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair), an innocent student whose relationship with Kathryn’s former boyfriend has left her seeking revenge.

‘Apollo 13’ (1995)

Of course, we had to include another Tom Hanks film on this list. “Apollo 13” is the critically acclaimed space docudrama based on the true story of the aborted 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission, which was forced into an emergency after a critical oxygen tank exploded. Much like the recent “Project Hail Mary,” “Apollo 13” avoided relying heavily on camera tricks or green screens, with much of the film shot aboard a specially modified aircraft that allowed the cast to experience brief bursts of true zero gravity. It’s a truly excellent drama, elevated by some incredible performances.

NASA astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) embark on what is supposed to be the third crewed mission to land on the Moon. Shortly after leaving Earth, an oxygen tank explodes aboard their spacecraft, severely damaging the vessel and forcing the crew to abandon their planned lunar landing. With their oxygen, electricity and other essential supplies rapidly running low, the astronauts must work with Mission Control to find a way back to Earth, but they're all racing against time.

‘Liar Liar’ (1997)

We’re ending this list with a comedy that still lifts my mood every time I rewatch it: “Liar Liar.” Directed by Tom Shadyac and produced by Brian Grazer, it marked the second hit collaboration between Shadyac and star Jim Carrey, following their success with “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.” The movie grossed more than $302 million worldwide upon release, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 1997 and further cementing Carrey’s status as one of Hollywood’s most dependable box-office draws. Sometimes, all you need is a good laugh.

Fletcher Reede (Jim Carrey) is a successful Los Angeles lawyer whose career depends on his ability to bend the truth. After repeatedly disappointing his young son Max (Justin Cooper), Fletcher misses his birthday party, prompting Max to make a wish that his dad cannot lie for an entire day. The wish unexpectedly comes true, leaving Fletcher physically unable to tell a lie. His new predicament arrives at the worst possible time, as he has an important divorce case to win and a promotion at his law firm on the line.
