Hulu is a great streaming service if you're looking for new shows to binge this weekend. It features a deep library of series from a range of Disney-owned networks, including FX, ABC and 20th Television. It also has tons of original hit shows that you don't want to miss. As per usual, this week, I've put together a list of three newly added shows (or shows with new episodes) perfect for adding to your weekend watchlist.

First up is "The Drop: A Snowfall Saga." This spin-off of the hit series "Snowfall" brings back show stars Gail Bean and Isaiah John for another Los Angeles story, and it just had its series premiere this week. Once you've watched that, you can now binge all 21 episodes of "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" season 27, as well as every episode from the previous 26 seasons. Finally, "Chad Powers" season 2 dropped on Hulu last week, so if you haven't seen it already, start streaming it now.

'The Drop: A Snowfall Saga'

Genre: Crime drama series

What's it about? “The Drop: A Snowfall Saga” centers on “Snowfall” characters Wanda Bell (Gail Bean) and Leon Simmons (Isaiah John). These were more peripheral characters in the original series, but this time they get top billing as they fight to reinvent themselves in 90s Los Angeles and the rise of West Coast rap.

Why you should watch it: There aren't a ton of reviews in yet, but so far "The Drop" has a perfect 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The original series also often received high praise and was notable for telling the stories of Los Angeles from a different perspective. It seems like "The Drop" is more of the same.

'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit' season 27

Genre: Police procedural crime drama series

What's it about? "In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories."

Why you should watch it: Look, I don't need to convince you to watch "Law and Order: SVU." I don't need to sell you Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T and a special cameo appearance by Christopher Meloni in the season 27 premiere. My job is simply to inform you that, if you have Hulu, you have the ability to stream all 594 episodes of "SVU" that have been released to date.

'Chad Powers' season 2

Genre: Sports comedy series

What it's about: "Chad Powers" is based on Eli Manning's character of the same name from the documentary series "Eli's Places." This time around, it's movie star Glenn Powell playing former college football quarterback Russ Holliday, aka Chad Powers. See, Russ became persona non grata after a championship game gone wrong. So, he's adopted the persona of Chad (complete with wigs and prosthetics) to go incognito at a new, smaller school and get one last shot at glory.

Why you should watch it: While critics weren't so kind to "Chad Powers" season 1, season 2 is doing far better. It's currently rated 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences scoring it just a bit higher at 93%. Binge the whole second season right now.

Hulu is an excellent choice for building your next weekend movie marathon. The streaming service regularly adds both originals and classics to its library. Plus, because it's owned by Disney, it's the home for new releases from several Disney-owned studios. It even has deals with some other studios to get new releases before any other service, whether they're produced by Disney or not.

This weekend, I'm starting with a pair of A24 movies. "Heretic" is a creepy horror movie with a killer Hugh Grant performance. But it might not be as eerie as "The Green Knight," though making a weird movie is nothing new for director David Lowery, as those who saw "Mother Mary" this year can attest. Finally, give "Together Together" a watch this weekend. It's a quirky comedy-drama that borders on rom-com and got rave reviews from fans and critics alike when it came out earlier this decade.

'Heretic' (2024)

Genre: Psychological horror movie

What's it about? "Heretic" stars Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East as two Mormon missionaries who think they've hit the jackpot when they arrive at the home of Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). He initially expresses interest in their faith, only to reveal he's really interested in questioning it. Because he thinks he's already found god.

Why you need to watch it: I love this movie. Or, more accurately, I love Hugh Grant's performance in it. He's an incredible horror villain, despite only using his words and a locked door as his weapons of choice for most of the film. The movie doesn't quite stick the landing, but the journey is more than worth it.

'The Green Knight' (2021)

Genre: Dark fantasy adventure movie

What's it about? "The Green Knight" is adapted from the 14th-century poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." In this tale, Sir Gawain (Dev Patel) answers the challenge of the Green Knight (Ralph Ineson) and takes the mysterious figure's head with Excalibur. But to his surprise, the Knight rises, grabs his severed head and declares that Gawain must now meet him in a year's time to receive the same blow in return.

Why you need to watch it: This movie is trippy. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it involves a seriously intense encounter with Joel Edgerton. But it's undeniably beautifully crafted. So if you've never seen "The Green Knight" before, now is your chance.

'Together Together' (2021)

Genre: Comedy-drama movie

What's it about? "Together Together" stars Ed Helms as Matt. He's in his forties and decidedly alone, so he hires Anna (Patti Harrison) to be the surrogate who carries his child. It's a strictly transactional relationship, but one that becomes complicated as the two find themselves unable to stop becoming friends with each other.

Why you should watch it: This movie flirts with being a rom-com just enough to build some tension, but never fully commits itself to romance. This film is, at its core, about platonic friendship instead. Just, in this instance, the platonic friends are having a child together.

It’s set to be another busy week for new movies across the best streaming services. Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max and Starz have fresh flicks for subscribers to enjoy, while a trio of options arrives on premium streaming. Whatever your tastes, there’s sure to be a movie for you.

I suspect this week’s most popular new movie will be Tyler Perry’s latest project on Netflix, which sees him return to his 2000s comedy-drama series, “Why Did I Get Married?” Meanwhile, HBO Max adds “Supergirl” to its library, and Hulu has a dark thriller from the director of “The Platform.” On PVOD, there’s a Disney remake, a Jason Statham action movie and a rom-com the internet dubbed “‘The Purge’ but for sex” over the summer.

There are plenty of new options to consider this week, so I’m highlighting the most noteworthy new arrivals to help you spend more time watching movies and less time scrolling through streaming service libraries. And we’ve also got a guide to the top new TV shows this week, too.

‘Moana’ (PVOD)

Disney’s latest live-action remake was perhaps its most unnecessary yet. The original animated “Moana” is just a decade old, with a sequel landing in 2024. There hasn’t been enough time yet for audiences to get nostalgic about Moana, and the movie’s poor box office takings appear to reinforce that idea. It grossed $315 million, which sounds like a lot, but with a $250 million budget, it’s not even close to profitable. Maybe it’ll swim on digital?

If you’ve seen the original “Moana,” you know the deal here; this family-friendly adventure follows the eponymous heroine (Catherine Laga'aia) as she embarks on an ocean odyssey to save her island from a curse. She’s joined on her quest by demi-goal Maui (Dwayne Johnson, reprising his role from the original). The foundations are still solid, but in a world where the animated “Moana” exists, there’s little need for this live-action adaptation.

‘Mutiny’ (PVOD)

The rollout of Jason Statham’s new action-thriller “Mutiny” was noteworthy because Amazon accidentally leaked the movie by putting it up on Prime Video for several hours. It was eventually removed, and now it’s heading to streaming in an official capacity. “Mutiny” offers viewers exactly what you’d expect from a Statham-led action movie. The British actor plays a former military man, now working as a bodyguard, drawn into a criminal conspiracy.

In “Muntiny,” Cole Reed (Statham) must spring into action when his billionaire boss is murdered, and he’s framed for the crime. Stowing away on a cargo ship, he uncovers a criminal plot and must bring down those responsible, while also clearing his name. The boat setting adds a degree of novelty (fortunately it’s better than “Speed 2”), but otherwise "Mutiny" is a very predictable and unambitious action-thriller with Statham largely going through the motions.

‘One Night Only’ (PVOD)

“One Night Only” made a lot of waves online thanks to its high-concept premise. This romantic comedy is set in a world in which the United States government has outlawed premarital sex. But to avoid public backlash, for one night a year, during a 12-hour window, sex is permitted. The internet dubbed this “‘The Purge’ but for sex,” and it’s certainly a kooky idea for a movie. However, beyond the novel setup, this is a very cliché rom-com.

Callum Turner plays Owen, an NYC pizza shop owner, who is dumped by his girlfriend just as the 12-hour window begins. At the same time, Allie (Monica Barbaro) is across town, looking for a meaningful connection on a night where everybody wants to hook up. Naturally, their paths cross, sparks fly, and you can probably guess where it goes from here. Turner’s leading man credentials are unconvincing, but Barbao has effortless charm.

‘Why Did I Get Married Again?’ (Netflix)

Tyler Perry is one of Netflix’s most dependable collaborators. His popular Madea character and spin-offs like "Joe’s College Road Trip,” which hit Netflix in February, always go down a treat with subscribers. However, Perry’s latest Netflix project doesn’t feature the loud-mouthed aunt; instead he’s returning to his 2007 comedy-drama “Why Did I Get Married?” for a long-awaited second sequel, “Why Did I Get Married Again?”

Following on from 2010’s “Why Did I Get Married Too?,” this revival again explores long-term relationships, and the various hurdles faced once a couple becomes husband and wife. Several original cast members return, including Perry, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Michael Jai White and Tash Smith, though Janet Jackson is absent this time. Critics were never hot on this franchise, but Perry has a strong track record of appealing to viewers.

‘Supergirl’ (HBO Max)

The second feature film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe was an outright box office bomb, grossing $126 million against an estimated budget of $170-180 million. But the hope will be that Supergirl can take flight on HBO Max. While I didn’t find “Supergirl” worthy of a cinema trip, it’s far from the worst comic-book movie released in recent years. Milly Alcock is excellent as the titular hero, and it’s perhaps worth watching ahead of “Man of Tomorrow” landing in theaters next summer. Alcock’s Kara Zor-El is confirmed to appear in the "Superman" sequel.

Based on the fan-favorite “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic book, Kara Zor-El hasn’t taken to being a world-saving hero like her cousin Clark Kent (aka Superman). Instead, Supergirl spends her days aimlessly wandering between planets and visiting dive bars. But she’s forced to adopt the hero lifestyle when a ruthless villain emerges. She teams up with a young survivor (Eve Ridley) to dish out some justice and save her fan-favorite dog, Krypto.

‘Rich Flu’ (Hulu)

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, director of Netflix’s “The Platform,” delivers another thriller that explores class divide, but this time it’s the 1% under the spotlight. The cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rafe Spall, and while the reviews have been mixed (it’s currently rated 50% on Rotten Tomatoes), I’m always willing to check out a movie with satirical bite.

Laura (Elizabeth Winstead) is reaching a career peak when a mysterious virus emerges. This disease selectively targets the ultra-wealthy. Overnight, having wealth becomes a death sentence, which leads the most well-off in society to desperately try to give away their vast fortunes to avoid their demise. With the virus making its way down the wealth ladder, Laura embarks on a desperate journey across the globe to save her family.

‘In the Grey’ (Starz)

Starz doesn’t always get the same level of attention as the likes of Netflix, Prime Video and the rest of the biggest streamers, but this week it’ll hope to get its share of the spotlight as it drops a new movie, “In the Grey.” This action-thriller has quite the cast, including Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza Gonzalez and Rosamund Pike, and it comes from writer/director Guy Ritchie. So there’s lots of talent in front of and behind the camera.

Rachel Wild (Gonzalez) works in debt recovery for various powerful clients, employing two clandestine operatives, Sid (Cavill) and Bronco (Gyllenhaal), to pressure targets to repay. But the team faces its toughest mission yet when they are assigned to retrieve a stolen billion-dollar fortune. What begins as an impossible heist becomes even more complex as the delicate situation spirals into a cutthroat war of strategy, deception and survival with a ruthless tyrant (Carlos Bardem) pulling the strings.

I'm a sucker for a disaster flick. Admittedly, these films get notoriously bad ratings from audiences and poor reviews from critics. But I can't resist a movie where the wildest weather-based problems slam into our little blue-and-green planet, causing absolute chaos — with the solution to save us all discovered by just a handful of people. The high stakes and overdone special effects make these films the ultimate popcorn flick experience.

One of my absolute favorites in the genre is "2012." Released in 2009, the movie spotlights a single family struggling to find safety as the world literally collapses around them. Directed by disaster-movie master Roland Emmerich (also known for "The Day After Tomorrow"), the film balances destruction with a generous dose of camp.

Starring John Cusack and Amanda Peet, this movie reaches peak popcorn-flick status by leaning into its sheer scale. It delivers maximum spectacle, high-octane thrills and standard apocalyptic tropes turned up to 11. And you can take it all in right now on Hulu.

What is '2012' about?

The film opens in India, where scientist Dr. Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) learns from fellow researcher Satnam Tsurutani (Jimi Mistry) that massive solar flares are unleashing rare neutrinos that heat up the Earth's core. Adrian rushes back to Washington, D.C., to convince White House Chief of Staff Carl Anheuser (Oliver Platt) that a massive geological emergency is underway. Soon, President Thomas Wilson (Danny Glover) secretly convenes world leaders to build massive escape arks, selling seats to the ultra-wealthy for millions while keeping the public completely in the dark.

Fast-forward to the year 2012: Struggling writer Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) heads out on a camping trip to Yellowstone with his kids, Lilly and Noah. Finding the park cordoned off by the military, Jackson briefly encounters Dr. Helmsley before running into Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson), an eccentric conspiracy theorist running a wild radio show. Charlie reveals the secret plot by world leaders to flee on hidden arks, a theory that sounds totally insane until a catastrophic earthquake strikes, proving him terrifyingly correct.

Jackson races home, gathers his kids, his ex-wife Kate (Amanda Peet), and her new husband, Gordon (Tom McCarthy), and makes a mad dash for an airplane. As highways, skyscrapers, and entire cities collapse around them, the film's jaw-dropping special effects take off. From there, Jackson is determined to navigate the armageddon to keep his family alive, leaving one big question: How can an ordinary family secure a spot on escape arks built strictly for the world's elite?

Why I recommend you stream '2012'

Everything about "2012" is gloriously over the top. Emmerich manages to squeeze virtually every imaginable natural disaster into a single runtime, unleashing catastrophic volcanoes, towering tsunamis, and world-splitting earthquakes. The special effects render the sheer scale of the destruction in shockingly vivid detail.

The performances hold up surprisingly well against the ridiculous premise and far-fetched science. John Cusack, Amanda Peet, and the young actors perfectly capture how ordinary people would react to total cataclysm. Cusack has always excelled at playing an everyday guy thrown into extraordinary circumstances, and he brings that signature grounded charm here.

The shifting perspectives also keep the hefty two-and-a-half-hour runtime moving at a breakneck pace. High-level political drama is constantly juxtaposed with visually stunning sequences of iconic landmarks across Europe and the United States being completely leveled. Danny Glover is exceptionally grounded as President Wilson, bringing genuine gravity and warmth to a leader who refuses to abandon his people.

Despite its length, "2012" is well worth the ride if you love disaster cinema or simply want a big-budget movie where you can turn your brain off and enjoy the spectacle. It’s no more far-fetched than your average blockbuster action or sci-fi film. If you're the type of viewer who insists on strict scientific accuracy, you might find yourself rolling your eyes. But if you don't mind the laws of physics being stretched for pure, unadulterated entertainment, this is one blockbuster you shouldn't miss.

Now that each has received its report card and overall grade, there’s only one thing left to do: compare the results and determine which streaming service is most worthy of your monthly subscription in 2026.

Pricing

*On August 29, Apple TV announced its latest price hike, increasing a monthly subscription to $14.99. Our report card grade is based on its previous $12.99 price.

The cost of streaming has become a major talking point recently. We held a Tom’s Guide streaming survey in June, which found that more than 35% of respondents pay more than $60 each month on streaming. Wasn’t streaming supposed to be cheaper than cable?

Price hikes have been a regular occurrence. In fact, Apple TV increased its monthly cost (from $12.99 to $14.99) just as we began publishing our report cards. But it’s far from alone; in the past 12 months, every single streaming service we graded has increased prices.

As of now, barring any more sudden hikes, the cheapest tier is found on Peacock. Its Select plan costs just $7.99 but comes with some major caveats like no sports, movies, or originals. The most expensive is, perhaps predictably, Netflix’s Premium tier at $26.99 per month.

The highest scorers in this category were Prime Video, largely because most people get it as part of an Amazon Prime membership, and Disney+/Hulu, which offers the most choice (either separate or bundled), with two robust services for $12.99, or $19.99 without ads.

Also, a quick shoutout to Apple TV. Yes, it’s just increased its price, but we appreciate that it offers a single tier, so there’s no confusion about what you have access to. It’s just one cost for everything Apple TV has to offer, which feels refreshing compared to its streaming rivals.

Library

Our library category takes a bird's-eye view of everything found on each streaming service. That’s movies and shows, including both licensed content and original efforts. Next to price, this is arguably the key category for most people to consider when signing up for a streaming platform.

HBO came out on top because it offers a selection of world-class television and blockbuster movies via Warner Bros and A24. Disney+/Hulu was also in the running. After all, the combo of two bundled services is hard to beat. Disney+ covers the family (and Marvel/Star Wars nerds), and Hulu has plenty for adults. It’s a platform that really has something for everybody.

Netflix’s library is solid, but it has lost so much licensed content over the years as seemingly every media conglomerate has launched its own rival platform. Apple TV has great originals, but lacks much else. And while Prime Video has quantity down, its library is overstuffed with the sorts of movies that you would have previously seen in the $1 DVD bin at Walmart.

Paramount+ lacks major movie franchises, and beyond “Yellowstone,” few new TV shows that generate much buzz, and Peacock has NBCUniversal's vault to draw from. This is a rich well with beloved sitcoms like “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “30 Rock.” Plus, it gets Universal movies, so as long as you don’t mind the Minions, that’s another advantage.

Originals

Originals are a big part of what keeps you subscribed to a streaming service long-term. If a platform isn’t adding a consistent stream of stuff you want to watch, why stick around?

Netflix dominates this field, releasing more originals than its rivals, and producing shows that catch the zeitgeist, like “Stranger Things,” “Squid Game” and “Wednesday.” But it receives the lowest grade here, with the average quality level often being very poor over the past 12 months. Netflix original movies have a deserved reputation for being mostly skippable.

HBO Max and Apple TV are the two standouts; both deliver some of the finest original television shows around. HBO is known for regularly dropping essential series, but Apple TV is really giving it some competition, and its commitment to variety hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Disney+ ensures Marvel and Star Wars fans are never lacking for anything to watch between theatrical releases, but Hulu deserves some recognition as well, for originals like “Alien: Earth,” “Only Murders in the Building” season 5, “The Shards,” and “Paradise” season 2 over the past year.

Prime Video is also starting to find a niche in buzzy teen dramas like "Off Campus," "The Summer I Turned Pretty," and “Sterling Point.” Meanwhile, Peacock is basically a required subscription for anybody who takes reality TV seriously. After all, it is the streaming home of “The Traitors.” Finally, Paramount+ has had a poor 12 months, unless you’re a “South Park” fan.

Interface

To be frank, every streaming service has an interface that is only tolerable at best. There’s a reason the highest grade we awarded in this category was Apple TV with a passable B. Each has quirks and annoyances that you have to deal with. There’s no truly great interface out there.

They pretty much all take the same fundamental form, rows of movies/shows presented in a “tile” format, so there’s not a huge degree of difference between them. It really comes down to the individual pain points of each platform, because some are easier to tolerate than others

Prime Video and Paramount+ ranked last. Amazon’s streamer is disorganized and presents you with PVOD content and add-on channel packages that you have to purchase separately. There’s nothing worse than seeing a movie you really want to watch on Prime Video, only to be frustrated when you discover it’s not on Prime Video and must be rented.

Paramount+ is similarly unintuitive to navigate, and, if I can offer a personal anecdote, I’ve faced a persistent problem with the mobile app. The season select button doesn’t work. So, I can watch season 1 of a show or nothing. And a quick web search tells me others have faced the same problem.

Also, and this goes for all the streaming services graded, we’re in an era where A.I. is getting ever smarter (and probably coming for our jobs), yet none of these platforms can implement a recommendation algorithm that reliably surfaces content similar to what you’ve watched. Do better!

Live Content

Live content is an area that most major streaming services are rapidly expanding. It makes sense. For millions, live content (typically live sports) is the only reason they still watch traditional broadcast television, so it’s an area that holds plenty of value for viewers.

Looking at the past 12 months, Peacock wins in the live sports arena by a landslide. It was the home of the 2026 Winter Olympics and had Spanish-language broadcasts of the recent World Cup 2026. Beyond these special events (Which only come around every four years), it’s home to Sunday Night Football, NBA and WNBA games, and Premier League soccer.

Prime Video has been making impressive moves in this area with Thursday Night Football and NBA and WNBA games. Netflix is making similar waves with “WWE Raw,” select NFL games, boxing and its first-ever live MLB events in 2026. Apple TV isn’t getting left behind with MLS a major part of the service, and most importantly, comprehensive Formula 1 coverage.

HBO Max has 72 regular-season NHL games per year and the Stanley Cup Final, but no NFL or NBA (WB’s deal with the NBA concluded after the 2024-25 season), which hurts its grade. While Disney+/Hulu blocks most of its sports behind an ESPN-shaped paywall.

The other big winner here is Paramount+, which competes with Peacock, thanks to the NFL, UFC, UEFA Champions League, Serie A, Carabao Cup and even some college football. If you have Paramount+ Premium, you also get some PGA Tour events and WNBA games.

Outside of sports, Hulu has the annual Academy Awards (but even as an Oscar nut, I know this is hardly a major draw), and Netflix has experimented with special broadcasts, such as “Skyscraper Live” back in January. These are nice extras, but for most subscribers, when we talk about live content, it’s all about sports, sports, sports.

Note: This is just an evaluation of the live programming on offer in the U.S. Live programming varies by market.

Overall Grades

If you can only subscribe to one streaming service in 2026, we’d suggest HBO Max. While it didn’t receive the highest grade in every single category, overall it offers a practically unrivaled library, several original shows worth sticking around for, and a few live sporting events of note.

Netflix will presumably always be the most popular choice, and it scores respectable, even if its original movie output is disappointing.

Disney+/Hulu offers great value, and a breadth of content that will keep the whole family entertained. Apple TV puts quality over quantity, and there’s merit in that approach. Peacock is often neglected but might be worth considering, though its grade this time is significantly helped by major events (Olympics/World Cup) that aren’t annual.

Paramount+ and Prime Video round out the report card, two services that have plus points, but just as many caveats. Hopefully, over the next 12 months, they can beef up their original lineup and come back swinging, ready to take on the pack we’ve graded above them in 2027.

Overall, there is no perfect streaming service. Each platform has its strengths and areas for improvement. Subscribing to 2-3 is perhaps the best way to get most of what appeals to you. However, returning to our survey results, nearly 30% of respondents subscribe to 7 or more platforms, which definitely seems excessive. My advice: you should cancel a few.

We’re already beginning to evaluate each of these streaming services for our next series of streaming service report cards in 2027, so watch this space; the winners and losers could change.

Hulu is a great streaming service if you're looking for new shows to binge this weekend. It features a deep library of series from a range of Disney-owned networks, including FX, ABC and 20th Television. It also has tons of original hit shows that you don't want to miss. As per usual, this week, I've put together a list of three newly added shows (or shows with new episodes) perfect for adding to your weekend watchlist.

Let's start with a pair of shows you can now stream in full on Hulu. "Furious" has been the surprise hit of the summer, and just dropped its season 1 finale this past week. "Chad Powers" season 2 also arrived on Hulu this week and all six of its episodes are available to stream now. Finally, if you're looking for a show that's still ongoing, "The Shards" just dropped its penultimate episode this week, so it's the perfect time to catch up before the season finale.

'Furious' season 1

Genre: Crime drama series

What's it about? "Furious" stars Emmy Rossum as rookie FBI agent Alice Black. She's a former NYPD homicide detective now working for the feds, and in her first big case, she's on the hunt for a serial killer (Lola Petticrew). But she doesn't know that Catherine, our killer, is really a sex trafficking survivor on a quest for vigilante justice. Could that be enough to stop Alice from bringing her in when it's time to make the arrest? Or is a killer a killer, no matter how evil the people they kill are?

Why you should watch it: "Furious" season 1 has been a big hit for Hulu. It has an impressive 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and 88% from audiences. It's already the show of the summer, and it's been renewed for season 2. Stream the entire first season now and see what you've been missing.

'Chad Powers' season 2

Genre: Sports comedy series

What it's about: Based on a character from the Eli Manning documentary series "Eli's Places," this comedy series stars Glenn Powell as former college football quarterback Russ Holliday. Living in disgrace following a championship game gone wrong, he's adopted the false persona of Chad, complete with wigs and prosthetics, to go to a new, smaller school for one last shot at glory.

Why you should watch it: critics weren't so kind to season 1 of "Chad Powers" on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences loved it. With season 2, it seems the critics have changed their tune; it's currently rated 100% fresh.

'The Shards' season 1

Genre: Teen thriller series

What's it about? Based on the fictionalized memoir of show co-creator Bret Easton Ellis, "The Shards" is set at the prestigious Buckley Prep in Los Angeles. It stars Igby Rigney as a young version of Ellis. A student at the affluent prep school, his world is rocked when a new student, Robert (Homer Gere), arrives, coincidentally (or perhaps not) at the same time a serial killer known as the Trawler becomes active.

Why you should watch it: Ryan Murphy is a prolific showrunner, and his FX shows all tend to have a combination of polish, style and darkness. Based on the trailer, "The Shards" seems to be cut from that same cloth. But it's been polarizing among critics and fans, according to Rotten Tomatoes, and people seem to either love it or hate it.

Hulu is an excellent choice for building your next weekend movie marathon. The streaming service regularly adds both originals and classics to its library. Plus, because it's owned by Disney, it's the home for new releases from several Disney-owned studios. It even has deals with some other studios to get new releases before any other service, whether they're produced by Disney or not.

This weekend, I'm recommending a pair of movies that are among my favorites to rewatch, along with one new release from this year worth checking out. Let's start with "Moneyball," which is genuinely one of my favorite movies, and maybe the best sports movie ever. "Pineapple Express" isn't quite on the same level, admittedly, but it's one of my favorite comedies from the 2000s and guaranteed to score some laughs. Finally, make sure to check out "Signal One," a brand-new sci-fi flick that just landed on Hulu today (September 4).

'Moneyball' (2011)

Genre: Biographical sports drama movie

What's it about? Based on the Michael Lewis book of the same name, "Moneyball" is the dramatic retelling of how Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) transformed the A’s. Using analytics, he took a team that nobody believed in and made it into the model now used by every Major League Baseball team to evaluate talent.

Why you need to watch it: I'm watching a scene from "Moneyball" right now as I type this, and it's giving me goosebumps just from the score and Jonah Hill's voice alone. It may get things wrong at times — it notably omits that the team had great players in the form of Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder, Barry Zito, Eric Chavez and Miguel Tejada. But Pitt’s performance as Beane is incredible, only to be matched in every scene by Jonah Hill’s Peter Brand (based partially on real-life Beane assistant Paul DePodesta).

'Pineapple Express' (2008)

Genre: Stoner action comedy movie

What's it about? "Pineapple Express" stars Seth Rogen as Dale Denton, a process server. When Dale unwittingly witnesses a murder committed by drug lord Ted Jones (Gary Cole), Dale and his drug dealer (James Franco) are forced to flee from Jones's hitmen and a corrupt police officer (Rosie Perez) who aided in the murder.

Why you need to watch it: This movie is hilarious. But it also wraps up quite neatly in a satisfying, rather than cheap, way. If you want something dumb and fun, but with still a bit of intelligence in the writing and performances, this movie is perfect.

'Signal One' (2026)

Genre: Science fiction movie

What's it about? In "Signal One," Dr. Annika Kask (Isabelle Fuhrman) and Charlie Kaminsky (Josh Hutcherson) are brought in by tech billionaire Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid) to work on a secret project. That project, it's quickly revealed, is to work with physicist Perry Glassner (David Thewlis), who believes he's found a way to communicate with aliens. Unfortunately, he's right.

Why you should watch it: For what seems to be a B-movie straight-to-video sci-fi flick, "Signal One" looks like it explores some meaningful ground. At least, that's based on the trailer. Besides, who doesn't love a good first-contact-with-aliens movie? Definitely check this one out now that it's on Hulu.

What is 'Good Luck to You, Leo Grande' about?

Emma Thompson stars as Nancy Stokes, a fiftysomething retired school teacher and recent widow who never experienced a real orgasm, even after 30 years with her late husband. She seeks to change that fact by hiring a handsome young sex worker, Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack).

The unlikely duo regularly meets up in hotel rooms, with Nancy armed with a bucket list of sexual activities that she wants to experience for the first time. No matter how professional and straightforward Nancy tries to keep things between them, the pair slowly but surely opens up to each other, discussing everything from family dynamics to past relationships to their real names (in case Leo Grande wasn’t enough of a tip-off).

Why I recommend you stream 'Good Luck to You, Leo Grande'

Directed by Sophie Hyde and written by Katy Brand, “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” gives Thompson that rare thing, especially in a youth-obsessed industry like Hollywood: A raw, sexy and soulful portrait of a woman past middle age, with all of the insecurities, desires and regrets that come along with it.

Lacking vanity but not vulnerability, it’s one of the actress’s finest, fiercest performances, and she’s well-matched by an endearing Daryl McCormack. (Both actors earned BAFTA nominations for their work, with Thompson also scoring a Golden Globe nod.)

Calling the film a “tart and tender probe into sex and intimacy, power dynamics and human connection,” New York Times critic Lisa Kennedy praised Thompson’s agility “with the script's zingers and revelations” and McCormack for moving “between wit, compassion and vulnerability with grace."

Hulu just added 41 new movies to kick off September 2026. As usual, the first day of the month is typically a big one for the best streaming services, with Netflix, Prime Video, and the like adding most of the classic titles (i.e. non-originals) to their libraries. This month was no exception.

Frankly, 41 movies is too many to bother sifting through if you ain't getting paid to do it. I am, and that's why I'm doing the hard work for you. I've combed through everything new on Hulu in September to shine a spotlight on the best of the best. I have five movies worth adding to your watchlist today.

First up, I'm recommending the earworm-filled "Bob's Burgers Movie," which is just as heartwarming even if you've never seen the show. For even more good vibes, check out "Good Day, Ramón," a drama about an unlikely friendship that transcends the language barrier. Then, for a documentary that sticks with you, look no further than "Beauties of the Night," a touching look at stars who aged out of the entertainment industry. For a blast from the past, there's the seminal queer horror comedy "Jennifer's Body" as well as a quintessential emo/scene kid movie, "Paranorman," from the same study behind "Coraline."

5 Hulu movies to stream now

'The Bob's Burgers Movie' (2022)

You don't need to know anything about "Bob's Burgers" to enjoy "The Bob's Burgers Movie," just a good sense of humor for a dysfunctional but well-meaning family. When a giant sinkhole opens up directly in front of the Belcher family's restaurant, it's only the latest misfortune. Parents Bob (H. Jon Benjamin) and Linda (John Roberts) are already staring down a looming deadline to repay their business loan, and a sinkhole ain't exactly great for business.

Meanwhile, the Belcher kids are busy dealing with their own kid-sized problems, which naturally spiral once they stumble into a murder investigation. After their friend Mickey the carny is arrested for a crime he insists he didn’t commit, the siblings do what any totally responsible kids would do: investigate the murder themselves. And of course, there's plenty of gorgeously animated musical numbers along the way.

'Beauties of the Night' (2016)

Directed by María José Cuevas, "Beauties of the Night" follows five celebrated vedettes (or showgirls) of the 1970s and ’80s — Olga Breeskin, Lyn May, Rossy Mendoza, Wanda Seux and Princesa Yamal — now in their 60s. Using archival footage alongside intimate glimpses of their lives today, the documentary explores what happens when women who built careers around their looks find themselves left behind by an entertainment industry obsessed with the next generation.

"Beauties of the Night" goes beyond the standard "where are they now?" story you might expect, trading that exploitative framework for a more thoughtful meditation on finding new purpose after the spotlight fades. If you’re interested in Mexican culture and entertainment history — or simply want an intimate if bittersweet documentary about women who refuse to be defined by their past — this is one to watch.

'Good Day, Ramón' (2014)

"Good Day, Ramón" earned a rare perfect 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, albeit from just six reviews (for what it's worth, more than 500 audience reviews put it at 81% on the Popcornmeter). This Spanish-language, Mexican/German co-production is heartwarming as all get it, centered on a simple but heartfelt message about something we can all relate to: finding our people in the unlikeliest of places.

Kristyan Ferrer stars as Ramon, a young Mexican man who travels to Germany to find work to support his family back home. Once there, he discovers that the person he was supposed to stay with is nowhere to be found, leaving him stranded and unable to speak the language. He eventually meets Ruth (Ingeborg Schöner), an elderly German woman who takes him in, and not even a language barrier can stop their unlikely friendship from blooming.

'Paranorman' (2012)

I'm a huge animation fan, and Laika makes the most beautiful and poignant stories in stop-motion there are. I'm excited to see their latest "Wildwood" in theaters on October 23, but until then, you can catch two of their greatest hits on Hulu this month. You've probably already heard of "Coraline," so I wanted to shout out one of my favorites that rarely gets the same flowers: "Paranorman."

Any grown-up weird kid can relate to Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a shy 11-year-old who's just trying to get through middle school. Being able to speak to the dead doesn't exactly help him fit in, and things get worse after he has a nightmarish vision of his hometown's past during a school play. When zombie puritans overrun the town, it's up to Norman and his friends to right a centuries-old witch hunt that killed a little girl, another misfit like him.

'Jennifer's Body' (2009)

What kind of self-respecting bisexual would I be if I didn't shout out "Jennifer's Body" on Hulu this month? Audiences slept on Diablo Cody's cult classic horror comedy when it came out in 2009 (the male-gazey marketing didn't help one bit), but I'm happy to see it finally get the attention it deserves on streaming.

Jennifer (Megan Fox) is the most popular girl in her high school and the polar opposite of her best friend, wallflower Anita “Needy” Lesnicki (Amanda Seyfried). When Jennifer becomes possessed after a Satanic ritual, she develops a taste for the boys in her class. It’s up to Anita to stop Jennifer’s reign of terror before her new boyfriend Chip (Johnny Simmons) is next on the menu.

Disney+ and Hulu may now be closely connected, but they still serve very different purposes. I use both services regularly, and while they may not command quite the same attention as Netflix or Prime Video, they’re still very much streaming staples (particularly if you’re into Disney’s biggest franchises or Hulu’s wealth of content).

We're diving into Disney+ and Hulu today to evaluate whether they still hold their spot as top-tier streaming platforms or if rival services are officially leaving them in the dust.

Pricing

Disney+ and Hulu are among the better-priced streaming services, particularly when you look at what you get for your money. On their own, both Disney+ and Hulu start at $11.99 a month with ads, but the real bargain is the Disney+ and Hulu bundle, which costs $12.99 a month. That’s just $1 more than either service individually, while getting you both libraries, and works out to $10.99 less per month than subscribing to the two ad-supported services separately.

The premium bundle is similarly compelling at $19.99 a month, saving you $17.99 every month compared with paying $18.99 for each service individually.

For families, this is particularly easy to justify. Disney+ gives you the big Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars franchises, while Hulu fills in the gaps with a much broader selection of TV, movies and FX content. If you use both regularly, there’s very little reason to pay for them separately. The bundle is easily the best-value way to get the most out of both services, and even the ad-supported tier gives you plenty for the price.

Grade: A

Library

Over the past 12 months, Disney+ and Hulu’s libraries are arguably at their best when you look beyond their originals. Disney+ has the obvious advantage of being the home for Disney’s biggest brands, but it also regularly brings major theatrical releases to streaming once their cinema runs are over. Over the past year, that has included movies such as “Hoppers,” “Predator: Badlands,” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash,”, alongside Disney-owned franchises and older favorites.

Hulu, meanwhile, is where things get particularly interesting. Its library is much broader, with a steady stream of licensed movies sitting alongside Disney-owned titles. Recent additions have included “Jurassic Park,” “Despicable Me 2,” “All of Us Strangers” and “Greedy People,” showing that you’re not limited to Disney’s own catalogue. Hulu also benefits from Disney’s relationships with other studios, meaning it can sometimes land recent theatrical movies before rival streaming services.

The result is a library that works for far more than just Disney fans. Disney+ brings the major franchises, while Hulu fills in the gaps with adult dramas, comedies, and licensed movies. That variety is arguably their biggest strength.

Grade: B+

Originals

Disney+ and Hulu have had a pretty strong year for original content, although their strengths are very different. Disney+ has continued to lean heavily on its biggest franchises, with “Daredevil: Born Again season 2,” “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” season 2, “Wonder Man” and “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” giving subscribers plenty of recognizable names to latch onto. “Wonder Man” was even one of Disney+’s most-watched original series of 2026 so far, showing that the Marvel brand can still bring people in.

Hulu is where I think the pairing becomes much more interesting. Its original slate is more varied, with FX productions, documentaries, comedy and dramas sitting alongside Hulu-branded shows. “Alien: Earth,” “Only Murders in the Building” season 5, “The Shards,” “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice” and “Paradise” season 2 are just some of the originals added during the 12-month period. And honestly, they were all great.

There are definitely some misses (like “All’s Fair” and “Chad Powers” for example), but between Disney+’s franchise appeal and Hulu’s broader approach, there’s enough here to keep most subscribers interested, especially families looking for a wider range of content. Together, they make a much stronger original-content proposition than either service does alone.

Grade: B

Interface

The Disney+ interface is generally clean and easy to navigate, but bringing Hulu into the mix can make the experience feel more cluttered than it needs to be. Disney+ has done a good job creating dedicated hubs for its biggest brands, including Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar, but the sheer amount of Hulu content can make the homepage feel busier, particularly when recommendations and trending titles start mixing together. It can be difficult to separate Disney+ and Hulu content, especially when they open the app specifically looking for Disney’s franchises.

Hulu’s interface doesn’t quite make up for this, either. While it’s perfectly functional, the sluggish scrolling, slower loading and problems with titles sticking around in the “Continue Watching” row after they’ve already been finished. That can make browsing feel more frustrating than it should, especially when Hulu’s library is already so large.

The good news is that this should improve as Disney continues moving toward a unified Disney+/Hulu experience. For now, though, the combination can feel like two very different services awkwardly sharing the same space, rather than one seamless streaming platform.

Grade: C-

Live content

When it comes to live content, Disney+ and Hulu are a little more complicated than they first appear. You do get some live sports without paying for an additional add-on, but the selection is extremely limited. Disney+ subscribers can watch select live ESPN events, including certain college football games and ESPN College GameDay, but you don’t get anything close to the full ESPN offering.

If you want a much broader selection, you’ll need to pay extra for an ESPN plan, with ESPN Select starting at $13.99 a month and ESPN Unlimited costing $31.99 a month. There’s also Hulu + Live TV, which costs $89.99 a month and includes more than 100 live channels, including ESPN.

That’s where Disney+ and Hulu lose points for me. While the ability to watch a very small handful of live events without upgrading is welcome, I wouldn’t consider it a meaningful live TV offering. Most streaming services that promote live content tend to make it part of a specific plan rather than asking you to stack multiple subscriptions to get the full experience.

If you’re a big sports fan, the additional cost quickly adds up, and suddenly the affordable Disney+/Hulu bundle isn’t quite so affordable. For casual viewers, the limited free offering is a nice bonus, but our grade feels fair when it comes to live content overall.

Overall grade: B-

Overall, Disney+ and Hulu remain a surprisingly strong streaming combination, particularly if you make the most of the bundle. Disney+ delivers the big franchises and family-friendly favorites, while Hulu adds a much broader mix of movies, TV and FX content. The pricing is arguably their biggest strength, with the bundle offering excellent value compared with subscribing separately.

However, the experience isn’t perfect. Hulu’s interface lets the pairing down, while the limited live offering means you’ll need to pay extra if you want more sports. Still, with a B- overall, there’s plenty here to justify keeping both in your streaming rotation.

It was the Oscar win heard around the world: the Hollywood hullabaloo surrounding “Moonlight’s” historic Academy Award win for Best Picture in 2017. You know, the one where the statuette was accidentally and awkwardly given to “La La Land” first before that jaw-dropping envelope switch-up. The resulting furor was so loud that it nearly drowned out exactly how excellent the film was and remains a decade after its debut.

The low-budget drama was a monumental achievement for director Barry Jenkins and film studio A24, a queer indie featuring an all-Black cast of largely unknowns that unexpectedly rose to the highest echelons of the entertainment industry. But more so than its commercial and cultural impact, it's the movie’s visual poetry and emotional resonance that’s just as stirring now as it was ten years ago.

To celebrate a decade of “Moonlight,” here’s why you should revisit the award winner on Hulu.

What is 'Moonlight' about?

Told across three distinct chapters of life — childhood, adolescence and adulthood — “Moonlight” follows Chiron (played by Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes in each respective stage), a young Black man growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami and later Atlanta.

As Chiron navigates poverty, physical and emotional abuse, and the socioeconomic hardships of his upbringing, he also has to grapple with complex questions of identity, masculinity and sexuality, especially his growing attraction to his childhood friend Kevin (portrayed by Jaden Piner in Act One, Jharrel Jerome in Act Two and André Holland in that searingly sensual finale).

Why I recommend you stream 'Moonlight'

Saying “Moonlight” is critically acclaimed is a dumb understatement. Along with that shiny, shock-to-the-world Oscar, Jenkins’ masterpiece has a near-perfect 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where critics praised the film for using “one man's story to offer a remarkable and brilliantly crafted look at lives too rarely seen in cinema."

But the three-act tale is also deeply human and achingly personal, wrenching universal truths out of the specificity of Chiron’s circumstances. The drama’s ensemble (largely made up of new faces but with a few notable names mixed in, including Naomie Harris, Janelle Monáe and an astonishing Mahershala Ali) gorgeously settles into the raw intimacy of Chiron’s world, so much so that you feel like you’re wafting in the waves right alongside Juan and Little.

A movie with such unabashed tenderness and quiet beauty still feels like a rare thing even a decade on, it’s proof that the glow of "Moonlight" only gets brighter with time.

'Adults' season 2

Genre: Situational comedy series

What it's about: "Adults" stars Malik Elassal, Lucy Freyer, Jack Innanen, Amita Rao and Owen Thiele as Samir, Billie, Paul Baker, Issa, and Anton, respectively. They're close friends struggling to navigate the challenges of being an adult while all living together in Samir's childhood home.

Why you should watch it: If this show feels like "Girls" to you, you're not alone. In the trailer, Zosia Mamet, who starred in the HBO series, references this close resemblance, saying, "You think you're the first ones to be young and adorable in New York?" So, if shows like "Girls" speak to you, then "Adults" needs to be on your watchlist this weekend.

'Futurama' season 14

Genre: Animated sci-fi sitcom series

'Furious' season 1

Genre: Crime drama series

What's it about? "Furious" stars Emmy Rossum as former NYPD homicide detective Alice Black. She's now working for the FBI, and she's on the hunt for a serial killer (Lola Petticrew). But in a twist, this killer is really a sex trafficking survivor on a quest for vigilante justice. That might be enough to stop Alice from bringing her in when it's time to make the arrest.

Why you should watch it: This show has been a big hit for Hulu, with an impressive 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and 89% from audiences. It's already the show of the summer, and it's been renewed for season 2. Catch up before the season finale on Monday.

Hulu is an excellent choice for building your next weekend movie marathon. The streaming service regularly adds both originals and classics to its library. Plus, because it's owned by Disney, it's the home for new releases from several Disney-owned studios. It even has deals with some other studios to get new releases before any other service, whether they're produced by Disney or not.

Here's the thing, though. The movies added to Hulu aren't always good. Unfortunately, this week is a prime example of that fact, as "Desert Warrior" is the only new movie coming to Hulu this weekend. Given its 28% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, I'm loath to recommend it.

So, this weekend, I'm recommending three newly added movies from the past few weeks that are worth a watch this weekend, rather than strictly the newest movies to Hulu. "The Christophers" was just added last week and is a new Steven Soderbergh movie from earlier this year anchored around a pair of great performances from Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel. Once you're done with that, check out "Violent Ends," a 2025 crime thriller you almost certainly haven't seen before. Then, wrap up your movie marathon with "Ex Machina," a sci-fi masterpiece from "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" writer Alex Garland.

'The Christophers' (2026)

Genre: Black comedy movie

What's it about? "The Christophers" stars Michaela Coel as Lori. She's a reformed forger turned art restorer, but Barnaby and Sallie Sklar (James Corden and Jessica Gunning) want her to get back in the game. They've hired her to pose as an assistant to their artist father, Julian (Ian McKellen), so that she can finish his eight incomplete works without him knowing. The plan? Once he dies, his kids will "discover" the missing works ... and become quite rich while they're at it.

Why you need to watch it: This movie has gotten rave reviews from essentially everyone who saw it. This movie is all about its two leads, and McKellen and Coel are worth the price of admission. There's a good chance this is the best movie from 2026 you haven't seen yet this year.

'Violent Ends' (2025)

Genre: Gothic crime thriller movie

What's it about? Lucas (Billy Magnussen) tries not to be like the rest of his family. Largely because they're all criminals, and he just wants to be an honest man. But when armed robbery goes wrong, it draws him into the family business: good ol' fashioned small-town violence.

Why you need to watch it: I grew up in a small town that could easily be mistaken for the Northwestern Arkansas location of "Violent Ends." So I'm a sucker for these types of crime thrillers in the backwoods of America. Make sure to check it out this weekend if you have the time.

'Ex Machina' (2014)

Genre: Sci-fi thriller movie

What's it about? "Ex Machina" stars Domhnall Gleeson as Caleb. He's a programmer set to spend a week at the home of his company's CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). But upon his arrival, he learns his visit's true purpose, and he's stunned. He's there to test a humanoid robot with an artificial intelligence (Alicia Vikander) to see if she can pass for human.

Why you should watch it: I firmly fall in the camp that this movie's writer/director, Alex Garland, can do no wrong. That includes everything from the show "Devs" to 2026's incredible "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple." "Ex Machina" might be his best work, so make sure to watch it while it's still on Hulu.

Summer is sadly coming to an end, but at least there are plenty of buzzy titles coming to streaming to distract us from the fact that the days are swiftly getting shorter and the temperatures are getting cooler.

With the end of one season and the beginning of the next comes a fresh wave of films and television shows to the top streaming services, including Hulu and Disney+. September 2026 will see the return of popular series including Ryan Murphy's long-running anthology "American Horror Story" and the Glen Powell-led comedy series "Chad Powers." And the film side of things will be equally stacked, with the streaming premiere of the Star Wars flick "The Mandalorian and Grogu."

'The Mandalorian and Grogu'

After soaring into movie theaters this past May, the big-screen sci-fi epic "The Mandalorian and Grogu" will make its Disney+ premiere on September 2. Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, Martin Scorsese and, of course, that adorable titular green alien, the film follows Din Djarin and Grogu as they hunt down ex-Imperial remnants and warlords for the New Republic.

But there's more Star Wars goodness where that comes from: The movie lands on Disney+ the same day as an official companion behind-the-scenes podcast, as well as the animated special "LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian," a comedic retelling of the live-action series.

'Chad Powers' season 2

Glen Powell's Chad Powers — aka the adopted, prosthetics-wearing alter ego of disgraced quarterback Russ Holiday — is back for a second round of the sports comedy, which premieres on September 3.

The six-episode season will see Chad's odd behavior start to raise suspicions in those around him, including Coach Hudson (Steve Zahn) and Gerry (Colton Ryan), which threatens to expose his secret identity and jeopardize the entire football season. He'll find some unlikely help both on the field and off in the form of Ricky (Perry Mattfeld).

'American Horror Story' season 13

The fan-favorite horror anthology from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk returns for lucky number 13 on September 24, with the first three half-hour episodes of the 13-part season. (Three more will follow on October 1, with a pair to follow on October 8, 15 and 22 respectively before the spooky finale on October 29.)

"Horror Story" regulars including Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Evan Peter will all return to the freaky franchise for the momentous occasion, leading an all-star cast that also includes Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, Jamie Brewer, John Carroll Lynch and Mena Suvari, among others.

"Which iconic horrors will return to haunt the hallowed halls of 13 and what new terrors await?" teases the official season 13 logline. "Light your candles, draw your pentagrams and prepare for a supreme surprise."

This week's slate of top new movies across the biggest streaming services has been confirmed, and after taking last week off, the most popular players, Netflix and Prime Video, return with fresh flicks for subscribers.

The headliner this week looks to be Netflix's new original thriller, "The Whisper Man," which combines a strong cast with a gripping plot. Other notable new movies include a sun-soaked romantic drama on Prime Video and a historical epic on Hulu, which made (unwanted) history of its own after the $150 million movie became a record-setting box office flop.

To save you from scrolling through endless streaming service libraries, I've rounded up the most noteworthy new arrivals across platforms. And if you fancy some binge-watching, here are the top new TV shows this week.

‘Her Private Hell’ (PVOD)

“Her Private Hell” is the first feature from “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn in a decade. Its critical reception was pretty much exactly what you’d expect from a new Winding Refn movie. In short, some critics thought it was a bold surreal trip, and others labeled it a tacky, pretentious disaster. A decade may have passed, but clearly some things never change!

Starring Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton, it centers on a troubled young woman (Thatcher) searching for her absentee father in a neon-drenched futuristic metropolis. Her search leads her to an American G.I. (Melton), who is on his own quest to rescue his daughter from hell. Expect stunning visuals and bizarre narrative quirks. This one won't convert those not already attuned to NWR’s frequency, but dedicated fans will love it.

‘Motor City’ (PVOD)

It’s a strong week for experimental movies, because “Motor City” may be an action-thriller, but it attempts to do something a little different in the genre. The hook here is that director Potsy Ponciroli's new picture has very minimal dialogue. Instead, the pulpy action and rock-heavy soundtrack does the talking. The movie stars “Reacher” lead Alan Ritchson, alongside Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber, Lionel Boyce and Shailene Woodley.

Set in 1970s Detroit, Vietnam War veteran John Miller (Ritchson) is on the warpath after a local gangster, Reynolds (Foster), frames him for a crime he didn’t commit and steals his girlfriend, Sophia (Woodley). Sentenced to 25 years in prison, Miller breaks out of incarceration and, with nothing left to lose, embarks on an epic odyssey for revenge.

‘The Last Sunrise’ (Prime Video)

Summer is drawing to a close, but there’s still time for one last sun-soaked escape in Prime Video’s new romantic drama “The Last Sunrise.” Adapted from Anna Todd’s novel of the same name (which only hit bookshelves last spring), it stars Maia Reficco and Fernando Lindez as two extremely attractive people who fall in love in an equally beautiful location.

Ry (Maia Reficco) is an American student dealing with a chronic illness. Heading to Mallorca for the summer with her overprotective mother (Eva Longoria), she finds an unexpected romance with a local, Julián (Fernando Lindez). The pair promise to live in the moment, but as Ry’s condition worsens and family secrets surface, this passionate summer of love could come to an early end. It all sounds like predictable fodder for the genre.

‘Desert Warrior’ (Hulu)

“Desert Warrior” is one for the morbidly curious. This $150 million historical epic starring Anthony Mackie was made in hopes of revitalizing the Saudi Arabian film industry. After a tough production and a post-production period that reportedly saw director Rupert Wyatt temporarily step back before returning, it was released on the big screen in April and grossed less than $1 million, making it one of the biggest box office bombs in history.

Curious to know if it deserved to bomb? Then its arrival on Hulu is your chance. Set in 7th-century Arabia, a princess (Aiysha Hart) defies the wishes of the ruthless Emperor Kisra (Ben Kingsley) and, with the help of a legendary bandit, Hanzala (Mackie), unites the region's warring tribes to take a stand against the ruler, culminating in the Battle of Ze Qar.

‘The Whisper Man’ (Netflix)

Netflix is capping off its summer original slate with one of my most anticipated streaming movies of the year, “The Whisper Man.” Based on Alex North’s novel, it’s a crime thriller with a strong cast. It features Adam Scott, Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Keaton, and while the jury is still out on its quality, the premise sounds very promising.

Tom Kennedy (Scott) is a widowed crime author whose real life starts to mirror one of the stories from his books when his 8-year-old son is abducted. Desperate for help, he turns to his estranged father, a retired police detective (De Niro). The already bleak situation gets even darker when a connection to a decades-old convicted serial killer, dubbed The Whisper Man, is unearthed.

Hulu is a great streaming service if you're looking for new shows to binge this weekend. It features a deep library of series from a range of Disney-owned networks, including FX, ABC and 20th Television. It also has tons of original hit shows that you don't want to miss. As per usual, this week, I've put together a list of three newly added shows perfect for adding to your weekend watchlist.

First up is "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," which is back for season 18. Once you're done catching up with the two-episode premiere (and the other 17 seasons), make sure to check out "Furious." This serial killer crime drama is one of the summer's surprise hits, and you don't want to miss out. 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' season 18

Genre: Situational comedy series

What's it about? Charlie, Mac, Dee and Dennis (Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson and Glenn Howerton) are back for another season and at least another round at Paddy's Pub. In season 18, they're heading to the Renaissance Faire, trying non-alcoholic beer and even getting in nine innings of baseball. Plus, it looks like Frank (Danny DeVito) is getting married, though it's no guarantee that everyone will show up to the altar in one piece.

Why you should watch it: If you've watched any of the past 17 seasons of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," you probably already know if you like this show or not. But if you're on the fence, don't be. Nearly two decades later, this show remains an absolute riot. Start with season 18 or season 1; you'll be laughing either way.

'Furious'

Genre: Crime drama series

What's it about? "Furious" stars Emmy Rossum as FBI agent Alice Black. As a former homicide detective, she's familiar with dead bodies. But a serial killer is a whole different beast. Now that she's working for the Feds, she's on the hunt for a serial killer (Lola Petticrew), who is really a sex trafficking survivor on a quest for vigilante justice. That detail might be enough to stop Alice from bringing her in when it's time to make the arrest.

Why you should watch it: This show has been a big hit for Hulu, seemingly out of nowhere. It's currently an impressive 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences seem nearly as enthused. This might be the show of the summer, and it's not too late to catch up before the season finale.

'Project Runway' season 22

Genre: Reality fashion competition series

What's it about? "Project Runway" is a reality show that likely needs no introduction. Its goal is simple: find the best new designers out there. This season, the iconic series pits a show-record 22 aspiring designers against each other to see who is runway-worthy. In an added twist, a former "Project Runway" competitor is returning for another shot at glory this season.

Genre: Romantic fantasy movie

What's it about? "All of Us Strangers" stars Andrew Scott as a lonely writer who is still grappling with the childhood loss of his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell). But he starts to explore that trauma as he grows close to Harry (Paul Mescal), a mysterious neighbor he meets in a chance encounter.

Why you should watch it: This movie ends on a twist you might not see coming. But the real selling point of this movie is the lead performance of Scott, and to a lesser extent, Mescal. Both are excellent, and Scott was considered snubbed by the Academy when he didn't get an Oscar nomination. Make time for this movie this weekend.

'The Christophers' (2026)

Genre: Black comedy movie

What's it about? Lori (Michaela Coel) is an art restorer and former forger, but Barnaby and Sallie Sklar (James Corden and Jessica Gunning) want to change that last part. They've hired her to pose as a prospective assistant for their father Julian (Ian McKellen), a famous artist, so that she can finish his eight incomplete pieces without him knowing. Then, once he dies, the kids will magically "discover" the missing works and become quite rich while they're at it.

Why you need to watch it: This movie got rave reviews from nearly everyone who saw it. Like with "All of Us Strangers," "The Christophers" is all about its two leads. McKellen and Coel are worth the price of admission, and this might be the best movie from 2026 you haven't seen yet this year.

'Greedy People' (2024)

Genre: Crime comedy movie

What's it about? "Greedy People" tells five intertwined stories set in the sleepy town of Providence, SC. These misadventures are all caused by the characters' greed, and they create a domino effect of retaliatory murders and chaos.

Why you need to watch it: Based on the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, "Greedy People" is a mixed bag. The cast is excellent, and the performances shine because of it. But the result of this messy web of murders leaves something to be desired. Still, if you're looking for a newly added movie on Hulu to watch, this one is worth checking out; just make sure you watch it after the first two on this list.

'The Edge of Seventeen'

Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, this 2016 teen comedy stars Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld as 17-year-old Nadine Franklin, who has already weathered a good deal of familial drama—her father died of a heart attack when she was just 13—even before finding out that her older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) is dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). Horrified at the news, Nadine seeks support from her world-weary teacher Max Bruner (Woody Harrelson) and her sweetly awkward classmate Erwin Kim (Hayden Szeto).

Steinfeld deservedly received a Golden Globe nomination for her outstanding lead performance as our flawed young heroine, deftly balancing the defiant sarcasm and deep sadness of the teen. That, paired with Fremon Craig's sharp script, elevates "The Edge of Seventeen" to "more than just another coming-of-age dramedy," per Rotten Tomatoes' critical consensus, where the film has a strong 94% approval rating.

'Me and Earl and the Dying Girl'

Based on Jesse Andrews' 2012 novel of the same name, Sundance darling "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" centers on Greg (Thomas Mann), a socially awkward high school senior who—along with his short-film collaborator Earl (RJ Cyler)—reconnects with a former childhood friend, Rachel Kushner (Olivia Cooke), who has just been diagnosed with cancer. As Rachel begins her chemotherapy treatment, the trio becomes closer, and the lads decide to make a film in tribute to "the dying girl."

Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon from a screenplay by Andrews himself, the 2015 indie is equal parts amusing and moving, skillfully avoiding any cheesy melodrama thanks to its honesty, heart and humor. "Anyone who buys a ticket to a film called 'Me and Earl and the Dying Girl' goes in fully expecting to cry. It’s sort of a given," wrote Peter Debruge for Variety. "The surprise, then, is the laughter: the near-constant stream of wise, insightful jokes that make it so easy to cozy up to characters dealing with a tough emotional situation."

'The Fault in Our Stars'

When it comes to the "teens dealing with cancer" movie genre, arguably none is more iconic than "The Fault in Our Stars," the tear-jerking 2014 romance adapted from John Green's bestselling YA novel.

Our tragic couple is Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) and Augustus "Gus" Waters (Ansel Elgort), two teens with a lot in common: Their love of books, their acerbic wit, and their respective diagnoses. After meeting at a cancer support group, they fall passionately in love, their fading health be damned, and embark on a journey to Amsterdam to track down a reclusive author.

Warning: It's definitely a weepy watch, but one that is well worth it thanks to Woodley's warm, grounded performance and the palpable chemistry between the two leads.

Based on the show of the same name, it stars Hillary Duff as the lovable but hopelessly out of her depth Lizzie, who heads to Rome on a school trip where a dreamy Italian pop star (Yani Gellman) mistakes her for his ex singing partner.

He convinces Lizzie to take her place on stage and lip-sync along to her parts, kicking off a whirlwind romance that's stuffed to the brim with early-2000s Disney charm. For more breezy, feel-good energy and catchy musical moments like in "Camp Rock 3," this is the one to watch.

'High School Musical' (2006)

Of course, no Disney Channel movie marathon would be complete without "High School Musical." Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens are iconic as Troy and Gabriella, a jock and a transfer student who fall for each other while auditioning for their school's musical. To everyone's surprise they land the lead parts, but drama class royalty Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and her twin Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) won't be overshadowed that easily.

When her kooky grandmother Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) leaves after her annual Halloween visit, Marnie and her brother (Joey Zimmerman) secretly follow her back to Halloweentown, a fantastical city they thought was only in storybooks. Packed with plenty of cozy Halloween vibes, it's a nostalgic pick for anyone looking for a blast from the past to reconnect with their inner child.

Starting things off on a lighter note, "The Blackening" is a self-aware horror movie that deliberately leans into a familiar tropes as part of its satire. If you’ve seen even a handful of slasher films, you probably already know where this is going. Some friends head to a secluded cabin in the woods for a carefree weekend getaway, only to stumble on a strange board game that forces them into a deadly game with no way out. To make it through the night, they’ll need to rely on their knowledge of horror movie stereotypes, though whether it'll be enough to save them is anyone's guess.

While it definitely leans more comedy than horror, "The Blackening" is a smart deconstruction of the genre that I really enjoyed. I was cracking up when I saw it in theaters a few years ago, and it made me fondly remember the "Scary Movie" franchise back before all those sloppy sequels muddied the waters.

'Pearl' (2022)

Ti West's entire "X" trilogy landed on Hulu this month, and "Pearl" is the best of the bunch by a country mile. And while it's the middle entry, it also works on its own as a standalone story. "The Odyssey's" Mia Goth gives the performance of a lifetime as Pearl, a disturbed young woman with her sights set on Hollywood — if she can get out from under the thumb of her overbearing mother (Tandi Wright) long enough to shoot her shot.

When her wealthy sister-in-law lets her know about a troupe in town auditioning new dancers to take on the road, Pearl sees it as her ticket to finally get off the farm. If only it were that easy. When her chances at stardom threaten to crumble right before her eyes, she doesn't handle it well. And I mean at all. This unsettling psychological horror owes much of its success to Goth, who kills it as a hungry starlet who'll stop at nothing for her 15 minutes of fame.

'Ready or Not 2: Here I Come' (2026)

2019's "Ready or Not" was a surprisingly good time, and while I'm still not fully convinced a sequel needed to exist, "Ready or Not 2: Here I come" delivers enough bloody carnage, comic chaos, and inventive kills to keep you entertained. Samara Weaving reprise her role as Grace (Samara Weaving), now deeply traumatized after surviving a deadly game of Hide and Seek with her husband's family.

After reuniting with her estranged sister, Faith (Kathryn Newton), the two are quickly pulled into another lethal game of cat and mouse because REASONS. This time around, the ones pulling the strings are an elite cohort of families vying for control of a secret Satanic cult. Grace and Faith must set aside their differences and work together if they hope to make it out alive.

Looking for your next watch this weekend? Another flash from the past, the drummer of Blink-182 is back in a heartfelt new music biopic "Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear" on Hulu. Also over on Netflix, you can catch the streamer's latest true crime documentary "A Child of My Own," which you may find highly entertaining against your better judgement. As the kind of stranger-than-fiction tales that's catnip to Netflix subscribers, it's all but guaranteed to crack the top 10 this weekend.

‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ (Netflix)

As someone who missed a lot of Adam Sandler's seminal works, I didn't plan on watching "Don't Say Good Luck" this weekend. Then my colleague Rory Mellon said it was one of the best Netflix original movies he'd seen in ages, and now my interest is officially piqued. Sandler's real-life daughter Sunny stars as 16-year-old theater kid Sophie (Sunny Sandler), who's hoping to land a part in her in her high school’s upcoming production of the popular Broadway musical “Waitress.

Sophie's so locked in on getting the role that she's blindsided when her mom ("Yellowjackets'" Melanie Lynskey) discovers her cancer has returned. Her home life gets more and more chaotic as her dad (Max Greenfield) struggles to hold down the fort, and her two opinionated grandparents (Bebe Neuwirth and Steve Buscemi) aren't making things any easier. With an impressive ensemble cast and a heartfelt conceit, "Don’t Say Good Luck" has all the makings of a low-key, feel-good watch to lighten your weekend. .

'The Invite' (PVOD)

My friends won't shut up about "The Invite," Olivia Wilde's English-language remake of the Spanish comedy "The People Upstairs." And I don't blame them. Written by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, this flirty comedy stars Wilde and Seth Rogen as a married couple with precious little patience left for each other. A dinner party with their hot upstairs neighbors (Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton) spirals into unexpected but not entirely unwanted territory.

Cue the social and sexual awkwardness. "The Invite" is every bit as much fun as people say it is. It's a silly and subversive comedy that's surprisingly moving in the end. The ensemble has instant chemistry, the sharp script will have you cackling, and it's one of Olivia Wilde's best films yet.

'Camp Rock 3' (Disney+)

After 16 long years, "Camp Rock" (and the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato) return for a highly-anticipated threequel to Disney's millennial fever dream musical franchise. The biggest "Camp Rock" fan I know, my little sister, told me it doesn't hold a candle to the first two, but it's still a fun watch with plenty of catchy music.

When their opening act cancels last minute, Connect 3 hosts a competition at Camp Rock to find a new generations of talent for their upcoming tour. Liamani Segura, Malachi Barton, Hudson Stone and Lumi Pollack join the cast alongside the returning stars. Like a lot of unnecessary sequels, "Camp Rock 3" seems made in a lab to squeeze what nostalgia and magic is left out of a bygone franchise.

'Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear' (Hulu)

Travis Barker has been through a lot. Once a trash collector in Laguna Beach, he jettisoned to fame a drummer with the quintessential aughts rock band Blink-182, going on to star on the 2005 reality series "Meet the Barkers" and marry "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star Kourtney Kardashian. But despite spending decades in the spotlight, Barker’s new documentary offers a more intimate look at the personal battles he faced after surviving a near-fatal plane crash.

With appearances from collaborators, cultural icons, and those closest to him, "Louder Than Fear" explores Barker's answer to the question: If you were given a second chance at life, what would you do differently?

'A Child of My Own' (Netflix)

Netflix has been on a roll with shocking true-crime documentaries this summer, from "The Crash" and "Maternal Instinct" to "A Toxic Love Story." The streamer's latest, "A Child of My Own," is one of the wildest stranger-than-fiction tales yet. Directed by Maite Alberdi ("The Mole Agent"), the Spanish-language documentary revisits the case of Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza, who was arrested in 2009 for kidnapping a newborn from a hospital.

You'd be forgive for thinking this is "Maternal Instinct" all over again, but I promise you, you have no idea where this story's going. About halfway through, Mendoza and her husband sit down for interviews to share their side, and they have a very different account of what happened. It quickly becomes clear that systemic issues may be the real villain all along, as they so often are in these headline-nabbing cases.

Hulu is a great streaming service if you're looking for new shows to binge this weekend. It features a deep library of series from a range of Disney-owned networks, including FX, ABC and 20th Television. It also has tons of original hit shows that you don't want to miss. As per usual, this week, I've put together a list of three newly added shows perfect for adding to your weekend watchlist.

First up is "Furious," which has become a surprise hit from Hulu. Don't be surprised if it gets some Emmy buzz this time next year. Then, for fans of animated comedies, "Futurama" season 14 is in full swing, and the iconic series is still able to get a laugh. Finally, "The Shards" is a brand-new series from Ryan Murphy that is based on the life of American Psycho" author Bret Easton Ellis.

'Furious'

Genre: Crime drama series

What's it about? "Furious" stars Emmy Rossum as FBI agent Alice Black. She's a former homicide detective now working for the Feds, and she's on the hunt for a serial killer (Lola Petticrew). But she doesn't realize that her serial killer is really a sex trafficking survivor on a quest for vigilante justice.

Why you should watch it: This show has been a surprise hit for Hulu. It's currently an impressive 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences seem nearly as enthused. This might secretly be the show of the summer, and it's not too late to catch up.

'Futurama' season 14

Genre: Animated sci-fi sitcom series

What's it about? Set in the third millennium A.D., "Futurama" centers around a band of misfits. Theoretically, they run a delivery service, but they mostly get up to hijinks. This season, it seems like time travel is set to play a part, so hopefully we don't end up with multiversal madness.

Why you should watch it: "Futurama" is on the Mount Rushmore of American animated comedies. The most recent seasons may not be as good as the first several, but they're still guaranteed to earn a laugh.

'The Shards' season 1

Genre: Teen thriller series

What's it about? "The Shards" is based on the fictionalized memoir of show co-creator Bret Easton Ellis. Set at the prestigious Buckley Prep, it stars Igby Rigney as a young Ellis. His world gets turned upside down when a new student, Robert (Homer Gere), arrives at the same time a serial killer known as the Trawler becomes active.

Why you should watch it: Ryan Murphy is a prolific showrunner, and his FX shows all tend to have a combination of polish, style and darkness. "The Shards" seems to be cut from that same cloth, especially with "American Psycho" author Ellis on hand to turn up the dark, twisted drama. Just be warned that most people seem to either love it or hate it.

Hulu is an excellent choice for building your next weekend movie marathon. The streaming service regularly adds both originals and classics to its library. Plus, because it's owned by Disney, it's the home for new releases from several Disney-owned studios. It even has deals with some other studios to get new releases before any other service, whether they're produced by Disney or not.
