There are a lot of deals out there that look good on the surface but aren't worth your hard-earned cash. Namely, I'd avoid the random brand names you've never heard of with prices that seem too good to be true. Can you sometimes get lucky with these products and find a diamond in the rough? Of course. But all too often, I hear stories about random, cheap golf bags falling apart quickly and costing more in the long run.

Another type of deal I'd avoid is any refurbished golf balls. All too often, these balls, which claim to be ProV1 or TP5 models, are cheap balls with a new coat of paint. Often, after a few swings with them, you'll start to see the paint come off and realize it was a Top-Flite masquerading as a better ball, leaving you feeling ripped off.

And no matter how cheap they are, don't buy iron covers. No one needs iron covers; they look goofy, and aside from blocking the noise of your irons clanking together, they really don't do anything useful.

Wyndham Clark is now the overwhelming favorite to claim his second U.S. Open title after extending his lead from four to six shots at the end of the third round.

Golf is an expensive hobby. Between the high cost of tee times, pricey equipment and premium apparel, it doesn't take much to break the bank. But Father's Day is actually one of the best times of the year to get high-end golf gear at a discount. The big golf brands know that kids struggling to come up with gift ideas can turn to golf to make their dads happy, so they offer products at lower prices.

Websites like Golf Galaxy and PGA Tour Superstore are chock full of great deals. But those aren't the deals I'm going to focus on today. Instead, I'm going to look at the smaller, premium brands and what they have to offer for Father's Day golf deals. I'm looking at the top-of-the-line stuff from brands like Bobby Jones, Arccos, Bruce Bolt and more. If your dad likes the finer things for his golf game, these high-end brands are certain to pique his interest. Best Father's Day golf deals

The USGA is making some big moves for its GHIN app in 2026, so I recently paid golf's governing body a visit at the absolutely stunning Winged Foot Golf Club to try out the new features, and I was absolutely blown away (by the course and the app).

To me, the coolest change is the new Rules AI feature, which is essentially like ChatGPT for golf rules. But there's also a whole new layout coming to the app, along with a boatload of new features designed to make keeping score and entering your post-round results more streamlined.

Do the best golf apps like Arccos, 18Birdies, and GolfShot need to be worried about the GHIN app replacing them? Time will tell, but the USGA is moving in the right direction towards making its app more useful than just a way to input your scores for your handicap.

Rules AI is exactly what you want it to be

When I arrived at Winged Foot, I had already tried the beta of GHIN's new layout and was impressed, but at the end of the day, it took its relatively barebones scoring app and brought it up to par with competitors like 18 Birdies, The Grint and the other big players in the space. And getting users who already pay for a subscription to those apps to switch will be an uphill climb, no matter how much the USGA shines up its interface.

“Our goal has always been to ensure the Rules are accessible and that golfers can find the information they need to play the game fairly, enjoyably and with confidence,” said USGA CEO Mike Whan.

“By combining our expansive historical data with modern AI technology, we are providing a bridge between tradition and innovation. Rules AI is designed to continue making the Rules of Golf easier to navigate and meet golfers where they are—on the course and on their mobile devices.”

But then they told me about Rules AI, and my entire perception of the situation changed. You mean to tell me that not only is the arbiter of golf rules building a more robust scorekeeping app, but the USGA is also making an AI you can ask rules questions to while on the course? That should put the other apps on notice.

Maybe I'm just an overly excited golfer and tech enthusiast who gets excited about something new.

That's what I thought before I tried it. Once I actually asked it a rules question and received a perfect response that explained the rule and how to deal with the rule, I was truly sold.

I asked what if my ball lands on "Frankenstein's fat foot" as an ode to Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore, but it didn't like that question, saying it will only answer questions about golf. So I asked without the Happy reference and got a quick, rules-accurate answer.

The full answer is in the screenshot above, but the summary is that you can move the ball and where to move it depends on the situation.

Which means the rule in "Happy Gilmore" is inaccurate. But it's also a movie, so I suppose it doesn't need to follow the USGA rules to the letter.

App redesign

As mentioned, the actual reason we went to Winged Foot was to see the redesigned GHIN app, which is expected to be made available to the public in late summer of 2026.

It's a lot more streamlined than the original app, with heat maps showing green slopes and improved distances to bunkers and other hazards on the course.

These features exist in other apps, but what makes their coming to GHIN exciting is that in 2025, 2.91 million people posted a score in GHIN. That means they're already using the GHIN app to enter scores, so it seems logical that golfers could condense everything into a single app that does it all. And now that the GHIN app does it well, that could actually work.

Will it convince me to leave Arccos? Highly unlikely. After spending a round with it at Winged Foot, I like what it brings to the table, but for me, nothing will replace the insights and data Arccos offers with minimal effort on my part. Sure, GHIN lets you input how many putts you made and whether you hit the green in regulation or the fairway, but Arccos does that automatically.

Still, if you're on the fence about which golf app to use and you use GHIN for handicap data, it might be worth switching to it for all your golf needs once the update is released.

And if nothing else, you'll want to use the Rules AI feature if you plan to play any sort of competitive golf where rule questions may emerge.

I attended the PGA Championship at the Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. As an avid golf fan, attending my first in-person event, and having it be a major should have been exciting enough.

But as a tech nerd, I was almost as excited to see what the PGA Championship had to offer in terms of the in-person experience.

Thanks to a partnership with T-Mobile, the PGA Championship app makes attending a live golf event much more streamlined (at least based on what I've been told from others who've attended many).

Tracking players on the map so you always know who's in front of you and where your favorites are playing stands out the most to me, but other features like an AI companion, grandstand seat tracker and Roar Moments that prevent you from missing impressive shots while you're on a different hole create an experience that I hope becomes the standard at professional golf events — and sports events in general.

How an app became one of my favorite parts of the PGA Championship

When I decided to go to the PGA Championship, I assumed there'd be some kind of app designed to help me get around the venue. After all, a golf course is a rather large venue for a sporting event compared to an arena or even a stadium.

What I didn't expect was how robust the app's features actually are and how much connectivity it would offer. In my experience, getting around the Aronimink Golf Club was smooth, as I always knew where I was, which players were near me and where I needed to go.

Golfer tracking

As dedicated a golf fan as I am, I can't tell who's on the fairway 200 yards away from me. I don't have super-powered vision, nor did I bring binoculars with me. So when I settled down into a spot, I pulled up the app, and in real-time, I could see which golfer was coming down the fairway. It helped to create a more at-home-like watching experience, even though I was at the event.

If you've ever been to a live golf event, you know how hard it can be to find an open seat in any of the grandstands. You walk up and hope someone happens to be leaving their spot at that exact moment, but there rarely is.

With that in mind, T-Mobile added a feature that tells you if there's any room in a particular grandstand and even lets you see a close-to-real-time photo of it, so you can see how much room there is for you (spoilers, there's probably no room if it's Sunday near the 18th hole, as I learned the hard way).

"You'll see a color circling around the grandstand. If it's green, that means you've got seating available," explained Scott Jacka, Sr Director, Technology Development Strategy at T-Mobile.

AI companion

AI is making its way into everything, and T-Mobile's app is certainly no exception. The AI assistant can answer all kinds of questions about the event, whether they're historical. For example, who won the last PGA Championship at Aronimink? It was Gary Player (pictured below with me) in 1962, by the way. You could also ask questions like did a certain golfer make the cut, what's a player's score at the moment and all kinds of other queries.

I did find the AI companion having a human avatar to be a little weird. I could have done without the attempt to humanize it, but for people less comfortable with AI, it might help make it feel a little more natural. Thankfully, there's an option in the settings to remove the avatar and have a more traditional AI chatbot experience.

It's not perfect, and there were some instances of it getting an answer wrong (I asked if Akshay Bhatia made the cut, knowing he didn't, and it responded that he did, but when I asked again, it said he scored a +5 and missed the cut). Still, if you want a quick knowledge hit about the PGA Championship, it's definitely a cool feature.

Roar Moments

When you're walking around a live golf event, you'll often hear cheers coming from another hole. Friends who attended many live golf events have told me this is one of the worst parts of going in person, as you then have to scan social media and various websites to find out what the hype is about.

"You might be in a particular location, and something good happens. You hear this roar of the crowd away from where you are, and you can have a little anxiety that you missed out on a key moment of action," explained T-Mobile's Scott Jacka. "Based upon how loud the crowd is, the technology can automatically cut and upload a clip to the cloud and then push it out to the fans, and so they can see that moment even though they weren't there."

Roar Moments, as the name implies, detects these loud bursts of crowd noise and feeds them into the app, so just a few moments after they happen, you can see the highlights. Is it as good as standing next to the green when Rory McIlroy or your favorite golfer sinks the birdie putt? No, of course not. But it's much better than scanning social media to find the highlight and guessing who it was and at which hole.

The future of in-person sports

Sometimes, attending an event live can make you feel like you're missing out, and this is especially true for golf because of the large playing area. But that's much less of a problem with the PGA Championship app.

Will we see this technology at Augusta for The Masters? Probably not, as that tournament is more steeped in tradition, but I would love to see it extend to the rest of the PGA Tour events and majors (note: the PGA Championship is a major hosted by the PGA of America, which is a different entity from the PGA Tour).

We'll see what the future holds, but if this is just a taste of what attending live sports will be like, I can't wait for more.

Ever since I first tried a LAB Golf putter, I've been sold on the concept of zero torque, lie-angle balance, and all the other terms the company uses to describe its putters designed to stay square through the entire putting stroke.

Since then, I've tried most of the company's putters, from the original DF 2.1 in all its massive glory to the compact, newly-released Link 2.2 (my current favorite). So when I had the opportunity to chat with the LAB's Co-Founder, Sam Hahn, about all things golf and putting, I jumped at the chance.

'Co-opting our marketing language for their benefit'

"Anybody that's ever golfed before has pulled their putter back off the ball, and just kind of felt it kind of fighting them and being a little wiggly," said Hahn. "We put the shaft in the center or very near the center of mass. We then do some fine-tuning with all of our fancy weights to make it so that the putter helps to square itself."

Hahn is a self-proclaimed golf nerd, so I knew he'd have some interesting thoughts on the golf world, especially after his company (which he recently sold) made a huge splash in the putting space. The usual suspects that dominated putting, like Callaway-owned Odyssey, Titleist-owned Scotty Cameron, and TaylorMade Spiders, had to take notice of this new player.

And when you're the leader and a new player starts to take over, what do you do? You take their idea and do it yourself.

But that's where Hahn's issue comes up: he feels these other companies "water down 10-plus years of hard work and development." Hahn event said competitors are "co-opting our marketing language for their benefit without really any concern for the consumer."

It's not that Hahn is against competition. LAB had existed almost uncontested in the zero-torque space for many years, and he knew competition would come. "We were in a totally competition-free environment for the first 5 years of our existence," he said. "The competition has definitely helped inspire and push us to keep developing the technology."

But for Hahn, the issue is about consumers getting putters that aren't up to par (pun intended). According to Hahn, some competitors "are just so comfortable putting less-than-stellar product out there."

The low/zero torque putting trend

When I asked whether Hahn thought the other putter makers saw low/zero torque or Lie Angle Balanced as a gimmick they could capitalize on for cash, he quickly shot down the idea that anyone would view the design as such.

"I don't know that they necessarily think it's a gimmick," he said. "I think that they believe in the tech, and at this point, how could you not? It works, and everybody has a friend who's putting better since they got into this technology."

I reached out to a top-ranked PGA teacher to ask for his thoughts on the zero-torque putting trend. Heath Wassem, PGA Director of Golf at the Golf Performance Academy in Ridgefield, CT, didn't shoot down the idea of these putters. "I think the engineering in zero-torque putters is solid and the trend will extend over time and more people will be comfortable with it," he said.

However, he did point out that the torque in a putter actually allows more feel for distance, which is why, according to his research, "less than 10 percent of players on the Tour have adopted this type of putter."

"It can increase the make rate on shorter puts, but distance control may suffer," he said. "With zero-torque putters, you can’t feel as much distance control because they have taken the torque out of the centric part of feel."

Like anything, there's a tradeoff. For me, as a higher handicap golfer, making more putts inside 10 feet is a huge benefit and worth the loss of distance control. For a PGA player who expects to make most of their putts inside 10 feet (the current PGA tour lead belongs to Vince Whaley, who made 91.65% if his putts from this distance), this is less of a concern. "The average golfer should focus on putting from 10 feet and in and work on increasing their make rate," explained Wassem.

And zero torque isn't going anywhere. "Callaway has the Zero-Torque Square, TaylorMade has the Spider, Titleist and Scotty Cameron have the OC (onset center) line. They are all capitalizing on sales," notes Wassem. Watching the 89th Masters Tournament live ranks among my favorite sporting moments ever. Witnessing Rory McIlroy slay his “white whale” at Augusta National Golf Club and finally bring home the career Grand Slam was a genuine privilege. Watching him go back-to-back and win the 90th Masters earlier this month wasn’t such a bad evening, either.

Ever since that fateful day in April 2025, when McIlroy became only the sixth player (and first European) to complete the career slam, I’ve been eagerly anticipating reliving the moment via Netflix’s golf docuseries, “Full Swing.” Since its premiere in 2023, “Full Swing” has done a great job of capturing the highs and lows of the sport, providing insight into victorious moments, crushing defeats, and the on-course narratives.

The previous three seasons of “Full Swing” have been excellent, so I had little doubt that season 4 would continue that trend and cover McIlroy’s win with the grandeur it deserves. So, consider me shocked that the docuseries has served up an underwhelming recount, with all the hallmarks of being a “rush job.” You could say it butchers the moment.

Let’s get this over with

The first episode of “Full Swing” season 4, entitled “Unfinished Business,” tackles the 89th Masters, and it doesn't do the momentous occasion justice.

For starters, the episode is the shortest of the season at 39 minutes. Once you strip away the accoutrements like the "hype reel" introduction and the questionable focus on Keegan Bradley (we’ll get to that later), there’s around 30 minutes of footage specifically centered on Augusta.

That is not enough time to properly tell the story of not only the events of the 89th Masters, but all the context explaining why McIlroy’s win was such a huge moment, a victory 14 years in the making. The episode also puts focus on Justin Rose, who ultimately came second, and while Rose’s involvement is important to the story, it further dilutes things.

For comparison’s sake, while Netflix’s “Full Swing” dedicates about 30 minutes to McIlroy’s Masters win, over on Prime Video, there’s an entire 90-minute documentary on the subject, “Rory McIlroy: The Masters Wait,” which is a much better watch for anybody wanting the scoop.

The Ryder Cup in the room

I can’t help but feel like the filmmakers behind “Full Swing” only included the 89th Masters out of a sense of obligation. After all, it would have been a very curious creative choice to omit such a landmark moment in the game of golf in a docuseries all about the sport.

Still, it’s quite clear that “Full Swing” season 4 is only really interested in one tournament: The Ryder Cup. Almost every talking-head interview in “Full Swing” season 4, episode 1, brings things back to Bethpage. That includes taking time to observe US captain Keegan Bradley at home, and constantly commenting on the pressures that come with being a Ryder Cup captain.

Then, as we watch Justin Rose surge up the Masters leaderboard to set up a nail-biting playoff against McIlroy, the framing is largely about how the English golfer has only been named in a single Ryder Cup squad and desperately hopes to make the cut for the 2025 edition. Even when the Masters is supposedly taking priority, the Ryder Cup looms large.

I’ve no problem with “Full Swing” wanting to emphasize the Ryder Cup. It’s a big deal in the golfing world, and the 2025 edition of the tournament (which is covered in episode 4, “The Last Stand”) certainly had enough dramatic moments to be worthy of taking the spotlight. But I can’t help but feel like maybe “Full Swing” should have just committed to making season 4 solely about the Ryder Cup, rather than trying to speed through the rest of the season in a very rushed fashion.

Perhaps the show's attention being monopolized by the Ryder Cup is to capture U.S. interest. After all, the 89th Masters was ultimately a showdown between an Englishman and a Northern Irishman (the highest-ranking American was Patrick Reed, finishing 3rd). Meanwhile, the Ryder Cup is a U.S. vs. Europe contest, so it has broader appeal and is more likely to capture the interest of American Netflix viewers.

Nevertheless, “Full Swing” has always done a marvelous job of encompassing the full breadth of the PGA tour, so it’s disappointing to see it stumble when the 89th Masters teed it up for a masterpiece.

There's a lot that goes into choosing a golf simulator. You need to pick where the launch monitor will sit, which model you want, the enclosure, the impact screen, the projector and more. And those purchases will set you back thousands of dollars — in my case, my golf simulator setup costs just under $10,000.

But with all those purchases, one of the cheaper things you'll buy might be the most important — the little hitting strip that goes into your mat. This is where you'll hit the ball, and the feel of different strip materials completely changes the way your club interacts with the turf.

I tested three different materials from Carl's Place to see which is right for me, and something I thought was a trivial detail of building my simulator ended up completely changing the way I practice and how well I hit my woods, irons and wedges.

The different types of hitting strips

There are three primary hitting strip materials, and each has its own benefits and drawbacks.

I asked Carl Markestad, Founder and President of Carl’s Place, about choosing a hitting strip. "When selecting the right hitting strip, [it's] one of the most critical and often overlooked parts of the simulator buying process," he said. "It’s important to think about the type of feel you want, whether that’s forgiveness, realism or something in the middle. You also need to consider who will be using it, because the right choice can make a real difference in joint comfort and how long someone can practice in a single session."

For Carl's Place models, which I used with the Carl's HotShot Golf Mat System, the most affordable is the Standard model at $79. It offers a mix of softness to help keep your joints from taking too much impact and firmness to properly punish chunked shots.

The next model is Foam, and it's all about providing more softness that won't punish your body on missed shots and chunks. The foam material is designed for longer practice sessions, playing around with family and inexperienced golfers and entertainment-focused setups. Anyone who's worried about overtraining. If you're dealing with injuries or other chronic conditions, you will benefit from this strip.

The foam mat costs quite a bit more than the Standard at $229. Of course, in the grand scheme of what you'll spend on a golf simulator, the extra money is pretty negligible.

Finally, we have the most expensive golf mat of the bunch, and it's the most realistic. It sells for $279, but it offers the benefit of a closer feel to real turf and will punish chunked shots, just like on the course.

The drawbacks here are that this realism does a number on your joints. It's also a bit less durable if you're known to chunk the ball often, since the gel material will wear out. At least, that's what Carl's Place says. I've been using mine daily for more than eight months, and it hasn't shown a bit of wear.

If you really need to work on consistent ball-first contact, this mat will suit your needs.

At the end of the day, personal preference is important. "There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to hitting strips, and that’s exactly why we developed multiple options. Some golfers want maximum forgiveness to save their joints, others want that true fairway interaction, and some prefer a more traditional, feedback-driven feel. Understanding those differences is key to getting the most out of your simulator," said Markestad.

Which leads me to the one I ultimately like best.

Which one am I choosing?

For me, the answer is a no-brainer: I love the gel mat, and it's helped me improve my ball striking faster than anything else in my golf simulator setup. I'm relatively young and healthy at 39, so the extra impact on the joints isn't a significant drawback for me at this time.

Will it be eventually? Almost certainly, but as someone who's only been golfing for around four years, the ability to closely simulate the real thing is priceless.

I do like the standard mat primarily because it's so affordable and feels relatively authentic.

For my needs, I don't like hitting off the foam mat. The idea that I'm making practice "easier" on my body at the expense of realism isn't for me, but I think it's incredible that the mat exists for those who need the extra softness on their joints.

Sure, it costs more, but for me, there's nothing better than practicing with conditions that feel as close to real as possible. And it really has translated to my on-course game. Between PathPal helping me fix my slice and the hitting strip improving my ball striking, I'll be well on my way to breaking 80 this year, and I couldn't be more excited about where my golf game is heading, even after taking it up so late in life.

The Masters is one of the most exciting times of the year for golf fans. While we're all spending large sums on polos, gnomes, hats and other collectible goodies, the players in the tournament are preparing to compete. They're going through practice rounds, studying greens (especially the ones that have been redone since 2025's Masters), learning fairways, testing out the rough and giving themselves the best chance of success at August National.

I don't think I truly understood how much preparation goes into getting ready for The Masters until I sat down and chatted with Ben Griffin, the current 16th-ranked golfer on the OWGR list. While his comeback has been one for the ages, no golfer's story is complete until they play at Augusta National.

Sure, Ben Griffin and his unconventional Maxfli Tour X golf ball have picked up a few PGA Tour wins, but now comes his biggest test.

Why not use the same balls everyone else does?

There's no doubt that the most popular golf balls are the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x. TaylorMade is right behind with its TP5 and TP5x.

But that didn't mean Ben Griffin was going to go with either of those balls if the numbers weren't the best. That's where his bond with Lexi Thompson and her family led him to Maxfli. And the results speak for themselves .

"I just noticed immediately how much farther and straighter it was flying off the tee," Ben Griffin said in an interview with Tom's Guide. "Not only am I going to hit maybe one more fairway, but I'm also going to have an average of six more yards."

For a PGA Tour player, reliably hitting one more fairway per round can be the difference between making the cut and not. After all, it's not just that you drive the ball farther — your next shot becomes easier. "That's the difference between a 9-iron and a pitching wedge. 8-iron and a 9-iron. Like that can make a big difference in a round."

And it's not as though Griffin didn't have reservations about using a $40 golf ball instead of $55 or $60 model like most players. As a tour pro, the price of the ball doesn't matter to him; he's not spending anything on them. But that didn't stop him from wondering, "Why are these balls as cheap as they are?"

"They aren't selling to wholesalers, pro shops, where they have to up the prices across the board," said Griffin. "What I learned is it's actually got just as much love and R&D and everything as these other brands, it's got all the tech in it."

Comeback kids

There are some obvious parallels between Maxfli's comeback story and Ben Griffin's own.

Griffin stepped away from golf to start a new career as a mortgage loan officer. "I didn't want anything to do with golf. So I tried to do something completely opposite," recounted Griffin on his time away from the game.

But golf found a way to creep back into life, "I played one round with a realtor trying to get business."

At the same time, Maxfli has come roaring back into golf with high-end tour balls and its own set of irons. On the crossover between his return to golf and Maxfli, Griffin said, "I felt like it resonated well with my brand as well, how I was kind of giving it a run in professional golf, took a step back, and now here we are again."

"I love sharing my story about Maxfli, and it's an easy story to share, and for people to go out and buy because it's one of the most affordable golf balls," said Griffin on his choice to use Maxfli's golf balls. "I felt like for me it was a unique opportunity to kind of be the one guy on tour to help bring this back because I just brought back my career."

And now it's time for The Masters

All of that brings Ben Griffin to one of the most exciting moments for any pro golfer: their first trip to The Masters, golf's most prestigious tournament.

Just as he approaches finding the right golf ball for his game, Griffin is meticulous in his preparation, not leaving his shot at success at Augusta to chance.

"I played three rounds between this off-season and earlier this week out there. Took a ton of notes. I played 18 [holes], and then I went around and probably spent like 20 minutes per green just like mapping it out," said Griffin on how he's getting ready for the biggest tournament of his career. "You can trust your caddy with certain things, but you're hitting the putt."

When I asked why he's doing the green mapping himself and not relying on his caddy, he said, "My caddy would probably do it as well, but nothing beats your own eyes when it comes down to it."

And it's not just greens, Griffin is looking over every detail, even the sometimes tricky Augusta yardage books, which he says have "about as little detail as possible." He elaborated, "They're meant for you to go out and take your own notes and figure out the course."

Maybe it's to keep some of the course's intrigue intact rather than putting every detail in a yardage book.

And playing Augusta doesn't always lead to a huge advantage. According to Griffin, the course will "regrass three greens a year, and they pick three different greens every single year. Except this past year, they did 16 again because they didn't like the brakes because they had to redesign it because the tree fell on it during that storm."

So that's three new greens, including one that was just redone last year, which will certainly impact players who've been to the Masters several times. "11, 14, and 16 are all new greens, so they're going to be a little bit firmer than the rest," noted Griffin. "It's Augusta trying to mess with you."

Ludvig Åberg followed up his stunning round of 63 with a solid round of 71 to move to 13-under after three rounds, three shots clear of his nearest challenger Michael Thorbjornsen.

There's a lot that goes into a golf simulator. I've broken down the parts of my golf simulator before, but I don't think I talked sufficiently about how important a good projector is to the overall enjoyment of playing golf at home.

So I turned to the BenQ AK700ST, a golf-sim projector with a bunch of useful features that make using it easy and fun — both for actually playing golf and for watching movies, playing games, and other entertainment. Here's why I use this projector with my golf simulator and why you might want to use it in your home setup.

Why I like the BenQ AK700ST

There's no single projector that's perfect for every setup, as we all have different needs. But for most golf enthusiasts, the BenQ AK700ST has key features that let you practice more efficiently at home and actually improve your game.

My favorite feature is probably Auto Screen Fit. It's not going to actually help you improve your game, but it will make your practice time more enjoyable.

Probably the most important factor in helping you improve at golf, though, is the projector's versatility in placement. The short-throw lens is designed specifically for golf sim environments, allowing you to place it closer to the screen so it won't be in your backswing, even if your ceilings aren't the perfect height. And it can go as large as 200 inches, so you can get that immersive feel you want.

Not without drawbacks

Of course, nothing is without drawbacks, and the BenQ AK700ST isn't an exception. One minor issue is that it only has two HDMI ports (fairly standard for projectors, but still annoying), which greatly limits the number of devices you can hook up (your computer will require one port for your golf simulator, leaving you with only one port for a game console, smart TV, or anything else).

It doesn't sound like a big deal since you can do most things with a PC, but then you might want to hook up a soundbar via HDMI ARC — now you've used both HDMI ports, leaving no room for a game console or anything else.

To combat this, I ordered this 4-port 8K HDMI 2.1 switch on Amazon for $39. This gives me enough ports for my Switch 2, Xbox Series X, PC, and one flex spot for other devices, while allowing me to use the HDMI ARC port for my Bose Smart Soundbar (another must-have if you plan to use your golf sim for other forms of entertainment).

I also wish it had an optical port for hooking up the soundbar, as this would alleviate the need for HDMI ARC, but this is a fairly minor gripe since there's a perfectly reasonable solution outlined above.

BenQ AK700ST final thoughts

Perhaps the ultimate drawback for anyone looking to build a golf simulator on a budget is the price. At $2,899, this device will break the bank. But it has a 3-year limited warranty, and the light source is rated for 20,000 hours, which means you won't need a new one for several years.

Are there cheaper models that will do the job? Absolutely, but with 4,000 lumens of brightness, this projector will work in lighter spaces, which is harder to find on less expensive models.

I think it's worth the money, but if you are in the market for a budget-friendly projector designed explicitly for golf, consider the BenQ TH671ST Golf Projector, which comes in at $949. It's 1080p and 3,000 lumens, but with around $2,000 in savings, it might be worth considering.

Regardless, if you want to improve your golf game at home with as little setup and work as possible, a golf-specific projector is one of the must-have devices for your sim.

I've always dreamed of having a golf simulator in my home. I had an outdoor net-based practice place at my old house, but it just didn't offer the same level of satisfaction. Thankfully, I've moved to a new house with vaulted ceilings in the living room (and I'm lucky enough to have a wonderful girlfriend who let me steal the entire living room for a simulator), so I'm ready to go.

As someone who loves researching products and finding the best option, I eventually locked in Carl's Place as the go-to for my enclosure, hitting mats and everything else I needed to build a moderately affordable simulator. And the experience turned out to be better than I ever imagined. I even talked to Carl Markestad, the owner and namesake of Carl's Place, about golf simulators to learn more about getting a home unit up and running.

My golf enclosure set up and the price

So here's what I got from Carl's Place and how much it cost (I said moderately budget-friendly, but if you're not well-versed in the golf simulator world, these are expensive).

For the enclosure, I went with the DIY model (there are Pro and Built-In models that cost more). As my room is a little tight, I went with the smallest size: 8 feet wide by 8 feet tall and 5 feet deep (you can make it shallower, which I wish I had). I also got the pipe kit, as I had no interest in cutting my own piping to build the enclosure. Other extras that made sense to me were the back-cover kit, the rear pipes, the wall-extension nets to protect against shanks, and the foam inserts.

All in, the enclosure costs $2,510 as configured. You can drop the back cover if your sim is against a wall, as it's designed to block light from coming in the back.

There are plenty of other costs associated with a golf simulator — hitting mat, gaming PC, projector, soundbar, and of course, the launch monitor. Here's everything I'm using with my golf simulator:

Take a deep breath, because when I add all those extras up, you might fall off your chair. If you want to replicate my exact system, you'll need to spend $9,784 (under $10,000 thanks to Square's affordability, assuming you can find one in stock).

The shopping experience

There aren't many things you're going to buy that cost as much as a golf simulator. Your car and is almost certainly more (though if you go fully custom, you can easily reach the same price as a high-end car).

That means you likely want a shopping experience similar to buying a car or a home, where an expert shows you all the options and helps you choose what's best for you. That's why I ultimately used Carl's Place for my enclosure. They will call you to confirm that your space can accommodate a golf simulator. They'll help you choose the enclosure that fits your space (in my case, the smallest non-customer option, 8x8 feet).

"Our goal is to make this a little less intimidating. We also want to provide a great value with the products themselves," said Carl Markstad, owner of Carl's Place, in an interview with Tom's Guide.

He also discussed the DIY process, which is the more affordable option (and the one I used) and wasn't too hard to assemble, even with my limited DIY skills. "We want to help people do it themselves. We know the gap for a user is information," he said. "We want to help users facilitate the completion of the project."

If you know what you want, you can simply go to their website, add it to your cart and pay as you would with any other online retailer. But if you're looking for some help, I can't recommend them enough.

But is it worth it?

I am happy to report that having a golf simulator in my home has added more joy than any single thing I've ever owned. Between being able to play golf whenever I want and watching movies on an 8-foot screen, it's amazing.

When I spoke to Carl Markstad, he agreed: "The other potential uses for the thing are a common selling point that we talk about," he said. "What makes it good for one is what makes it good for the other."

For me, taking a lunch break and playing a quick 9 holes (or 18 if I rush and turn off putting) is, in my opinion, the best way to spend a break.

And it's turned my video game-loving 9-year-old stepson onto golf, since it combines elements of video games with golf. Now, he's always asking to play, and he can't wait to hit a real course in the Spring (no outdoor golf is being played in frigid Connecticut this time of year).

So is it worth it? For me, it absolutely is. Between the golf and having a huge screen to watch movies and play video games on, I couldn't be happier. It's a pricey investment, but for anyone looking to have more fun while improving their golf game, it's worthwhile.

Just make sure to work with Carl's Place (or another retailer with a similar level of customer service) so your space can accommodate the large hobby, and you get the right parts for your individual needs.

Whenever I talk to someone getting into golf for the first time, I tell them to consider tracking their game with Arccos. Arccos sensors go right in your club grips. From there, you register them in the app so it knows which club is associated with each sensor, and then you go play. I don't find them intrusive at all, as they're so light you can't feel them.

Because it knows what club you're using and when you hit the ball, it keeps track of your shots and tells you how far you hit each one. After a few rounds, Arccos learns how far you hit each club and will make recommendations. For example, if it knows you hit your 7 iron 150 yards and you're 157 yards from the green, it'll tell you to hit that club.

But it goes further, because you can look at your shot dispersions to see which club is more likely to land on the green. So if you hit your 7-iron farther but your 8-iron more accurately (based on past shots), you can make a smarter club choice. No longer will you use your gut to figure out which club feels right. You'll use historic shot data to make the play that's most likely to get you the best score. Of course, you could top the ball 20 yards, but you can't blame Arccos for that!

After your round, Arccos will analyse your performance and tell you which parts of your game were best and which were worst. It'll tell you key stats like the number of fairways hit, how many greens in regulation you had and how many putts per hole you took. Mindlessly practicing will help you improve a bit, but using Arccos to identify exactly what you need to work on will let you focus your time and practice more intelligently between rounds.

Look, I probably sound like I work for Arccos with how much I'm gushing over the product, but I have nothing to do with them. I'm just a bad golfer looking to get better, and no other golf-related purchase I've ever made has helped me improve faster than Arccos. I love my PXG Lightning driver; it's helped my game a lot, but I'd trade it away in a second if it was the difference between using Arccos and not — it's that important to my enjoyment of golf.

“I had so much material against JT,” Schauffele said of the missing Thomas. “I’ll have to ask ChatGPT how to talk smack to these guys because he was going to be my sole target.” Bradley, referring to Fleetwood and Lowry, has promised this is "my chance to get back at these two maniacs" after the Ryder Cup.

Limited edition golf driver deals

Golf is a game that requires one key thing if you want to get better: dedication.

You need to be dedicated to practicing. You need to be dedicated to spending money on equipment to help you play better, such as the best golf gloves.

Combining the two, it helps to be willing to spend money on a good launch monitor to track your performance data. That's where the Foresight GC3 or GC3S comes in as my recommendation (they're all technically the same hardware but with different payment options). You'll have a hard time finding a launch monitor that works better at the range, on the course or in a full simulator.

I hear you exclaiming that you're not willing to spend $3,799 or $6,999 on a launch monitor. And I get it, it's not going to be the right purchase for everyone. But for golfers who are serious about taking their game to another level, it's an investment that's worth considering.

2 models, 2 pricing structures

Before we jump into why I love the GC3, GC3S and LPI, I want to quickly explain the pricing model behind the three, as it's a little confusing.

The GC3 is the model you can just buy without worrying about subscriptions. It's $6,999, so it's by far the most expensive. But it doesn't come with any required strings. It works indoors and outdoors, making it your simulator launch monitor and best friend at the driving range.

The GC3S retains the Foresight branding, but switches the color to blue. It costs $3,799 and requires a $499 per year subscription to connect to the software. You can use the on-screen data without the subscription, and the first year is included. If the initial investment for the GC3 is too much, this could be a viable option.

Both come with a Laser Rangefinder that lets you use the Link Enabled technology, which we'll get to shortly.

Data, data and more data

Both launch monitors provide all kinds of data for both the ball and the club. Data is the key to improving at golf, and the more data points you have, the more you can tweak and make improvements to your swing. Here's the type of ball data you can track with the Foresight GC3:

It's not just the quantity of data that matters, though. Having lots of data points means nothing if the data isn't accurate. Thankfully, with the Foresight GC3, the data is generally regarded as among the most accurate offered in the entire golf industry.

If you watch many of the top golf YouTube personalities, they use Foresight launch monitors as the standard by which they test other simulators and monitors. Sure, a lot of them use the QuadMAX or GCQuad for the extra data points, but unless you have $20,000 to spend, I'd lean towards sacrificing an extra camera (the Quad models have four while the GC3 has three) to save a ton of cash.

It's a full simulator, too

Launch monitors are great for getting the data you need to improve your game, but what if you want to take it to the next level and actually play golf with your device?

The Foresight GC3 is perfect for that. I use it with my indoor simulator enclosure from Carl's Place (which does a great job in its own right), and I've never had to go to the range or simulator facility again.

You can use Foresight's software or my personal favorite golf sim software, GSPro. It also links with E6 and other popular golf simulator apps, so you can get the same experience you know and love (unless that experience is Trackman, you can run its software with Foresight).

It'll last a long time

I've been to the Foresight headquarters and seen what goes into making these launch monitors. The tests the company does to ensure that you're spending your thousands of dollars on a launch monitor.

They're designed to last for years, potentially even decades. The company puts them through the proverbial wringer to ensure that if you happen to shank a ball into it (a feat that's hard to do when it's beside you, but I won't judge), it'll handle it and keep providing the data and simulation you need.

Helps on the course

There are very few launch monitors that can help you on the course without requiring you to bring the entire kit with you. But Foresight has figured out a way. Thanks to the Bushnell rangefinder that comes with the GC3 and the Link Enabled tech, you can get your club distances and recommendations right in the rangefinder (and Bushnell app).

It really is the future of rangefinder technolgy. It's so good, in fact, that I said it feels like cheating when I first tried it. The ability to know carry distances for your clubs at any moment on the golf course is perhaps the most useful bit of information you can have, whether you're a high-handicap player like me or a +5 handicap (okay, most +5 handicaps probably know their distances like the back of their hands, but you get the point).

I know it's expensive, but...

I'm not going to argue that the Foresight GC3 is for everyone. It's not. A lot of golfers (maybe even most golfers) will scoff at the idea of spending thousands of dollars on a launch monitor/golf simulator.

But for the small percentage of golfers who want to take their golf game to another level, both from a skill and fun perspective and those who have the disposable income, you can't do better than a GC3 or GC3S at this price point.

It's expensive, but ultimately, it's the real deal in terms of data, versatility and everything else you could ever want from a high-end, professional launch monitor.

How does The Ryder Cup work?

Not everyone tuning in will be familiar with the format of the Ryder Cup, as it is very different from any other golfing event.

The format is match play, with foursomes (alternate shot) and fourballs (better ball) across Friday and Saturday. This sees two players from Team USA take on two from Team Europe, and whoever comes out on top after 18 holes earns a point for their team.

On Sunday, we move on to singles match play, where all 12 players from each side take on an opponent, with a point available for each match.

The first team to reach 14½ points secures the Ryder Cup.

Almost inevitably, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy have been drawn to face each other today – that's world number one vs world number two. Scheffler has been out of form this week, losing four out of four, and will be determined to get one back on his old adversary. First out is Cameron Young vs Justin Rose, which could be a cracker, followed by Fleetwood (going for five out of five) against Justin Thomas.

It's two very different approaches that leave you with a golf bag that's truly your own.

I really like Stitch's approach to customization. It offers two different bag colors — white and black. From there, you can select from nine different strap options. There are 11 saddles to choose from, but two of them are out of stock (and have been for some time), so for the sake of argument, there are nine saddles.

You can mix and match the saddles and straps, or you can opt for the same pattern (which is what I did with the Window Pane pattern). Finally, you can add your initials to really make the bag your own.

When the bag comes, attaching the saddle is as simple as zipping the new one on. The straps clip in, and your bag is good to go. You can buy additional saddles and straps that'll help you match your golf bag to your outfits, if that's your style.

Now, you do sacrifice some storage space with the bag's design, but with the ability to swap saddles, you can actually have pre-set pockets for different types of rounds. Maybe you use different balls for tournaments or a different rangefinder. You can swap the saddle that's pre-filled with the necessary items instead of changing bags or loading and unloading all the different supplies.

The bag is also lightweight (the SL stands for superleggera, which is Italian for "superlight"). It only weighs 99 ounces with the straps on, making it a perfect bag for anyone who wants to walk the course and carry their clubs.

Aside from the customization, it's a nice bag, which isn't a surprise as Stitch bags come with high price tags and high levels of quality. It's a 4-way divider, so you don't need to think too heavily about where you put your clubs.

This has quickly become one of my go-to golf bags, thanks to its attractive design and excellent performance. I like carrying it around because it's light but can still fit all 14 clubs (unlike the super-light Sunday-style bags that won't fit a whole set). It doesn't have the most pockets by any means, but it has enough to carry your necessities without weighing you down.

MNML MR2 Golf Bag

I actually covered the MNML MR2 golf bag when it first launched, focusing on the incredible tech features it offers. There's a solar panel, a Bluetooth speaker, a pocket to record your swing, and plenty of other features to get excited about. It's made with recycled material and doesn't have any zippered pockets — they're all magnetic.
