Over the past couple of years, between price hikes and shifting priorities, even the best streaming services have become more akin to cable TV with prices to match, especially at the higher "ad-free" tiers.

Almost every streaming service, save Apple TV, has multiple subscription tiers, including one with advertisements. These ad-supported memberships tend to be less expensive than the higher tiers and in some cases offer fewer features, like a lack of live sports or no downloads.

With that in mind, how often are advertisements interrupting your movies or TV shows? We tested seven of the major platforms to find out.

Tom's Guide testing process

We tested seven streaming platforms with the same process for both movies and TV shows.

These are the streamers I looked at:

• Disney+
• HBO Max
• Hulu
• Netflix
• Paramount+
• Peacock
• Prime Video

We tried to test out shows and movies of similar lengths within five minutes on either side. For movies, we watched films that were 2 hours long. For shows, we tried to find two episodes of about 60 minutes each, within five minutes.

We charted how many advertising breaks were inserted into the media, including starting ads. We also tracked how much added time the advertisements added to the overall runtime of the shows and movies.

Movie advertising

Surprisingly, how platforms break up their movies varies wildly between the number of breaks and how much added time they have.

If you want to avoid advertisements, Paramount+ and Peacock may be the way to go with only one ad roll at the start of the movies and nothing while it plays.

Here's how it broke down:

Netflix had the most ad breaks with nine, but those breaks were typically only 30 to 45 seconds with one or two commercials.

HBO Max had five ad breaks, but like Netflix, they only totaled two minutes. There were a couple of times during "Howl's Moving Castle" when I looked away and almost missed a couple.

The longest ads came from Prime Video, which only had four ad breaks but each one typically lasted around a minute and a half. It added over eight minutes to the process.

Disney+ was close behind with five ad breaks that added seven minutes and 45 seconds to "Fantastic Four: First Steps."

We're not doing winners and losers with these tests, but Paramount+ and Peacock waste your time the least and actually let you watch the movie.

TV show advertising

Unlike movies, most streaming services insert the same number of ad breaks in shows — between four and five, including ads that run before the show starts. The big difference lies in the added time.

For this test, we picked a series and watched the first two episodes of the show as long as they were in the 55- to 60-minute range.

Here's how it shook out:

Of the streaming platforms, Disney+ comes out the worst again.

I will note that I was only able to sign up for Hulu and Disney+ as a bundle. The Disney platform is a mess, and Hulu stuff is jumbled in with Disney content, which can be quite annoying when you're trying to find just Disney titles or just Hulu titles. Even clicking the Disney+ tab still sees Hulu shows or movies shoved into the different panels.

I specifically watched the Disney+ original series "The Punisher" for this test, and found between the first two episodes an average of over eight minutes of added runtime. Paramount+ was second worst with exactly eight minutes of added time between the two episodes of "Halo" I watched.

During the Paramount test, I got an error code during the second episode of "Halo," and the ads all disappeared. I did check out "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and "Dutton Ranch" just in case and got similar results, though those shows' episodes don't exactly hit 60 minutes.

Netflix may be the best value at only two minutes added time per episode. While watching the recently canceled "The Boroughs," there were only four ad breaks, but they varied in length. One was a minute, but the shortest was a quick 15 seconds.

How much the ad-supported subscriptions costs

If you're considering downgrading or signing up for one of the ad-supported tiers, they cost about the same across every platform, save the Disney+ and Hulu bundle, which combines both for $12.99 a month.

Here's what watching all those ads will cost you:

Some services like HBO Max and Peacock offer annual subscriptions, which will save you a dollar or so per month. Plus, Amazon Prime Video comes with a Prime subscription if you subscribe to that for $139 a year or $14.99 per month.

Otherwise, beyond HBO, most platforms cost $8.99 for the ad-supported subscription. Peacock is the cheapest at $7.99 by itself.

'Futurama' season 14

The folks behind the long-running animated sitcom — which follows a New York City pizza delivery boy (voiced by Billy West) who accidentally freezes himself in 1999 and gets defrosted in the year 3000 to find himself surrounded by hard-drinking robots, lovely cyclops and the like — promise "a non-stop onslaught of swaggering space pirates, lab-grown meats and sexy scams" in the upcoming fourteenth season of "Futurama," which premieres with two episodes on Monday, August 3. (Episodes will then be released one-at-a-time every subsequent Monday.) Along with West, the original voice cast will be back, including Katey Segal and John DiMaggio.

'The Shards'

Based on Bret Easton Ellis' semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, FX's "The Shards" comes courtesy of Ellis himself as well as Ryan Murphy, so you know some campy TV fun is in your future if you choose to tune into the new teen thriller. Premiering August 5 on Hulu, the 1980s-set series follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite Los Angeles prep school whose universe gets rattled by a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere), whose arrival unsettlingly coincides with the activities of a serial killer known as The Trawler. The cast also includes Kaia Gerber, Wes Bentley, Graham Campbell, Hayes Warner and Igby Rigney as Bret Easton Ellis.

'Camp Rock 3'

OG "Camp Rock" fans are now well and grown, but they can introduce a whole new generation to the movie-musical franchise with the long-awaited sequel "Camp Rock 3," which arrives 16 years in the making (yes, 16!) on August 14. The latest chapter of the trilogy sees original stars Jonas Brothers and Maria Canals-Barrera reprise their roles from the previous films, starring alongside Sherry Cola, Liamani Segura, and Malachi Barton.

When the opening act for Connect 3 cancels at the last minute, the band decides to return to their beloved Camp Rock and host a competition to find new talent to join their national tour. He then goes to New York and refuses to stop being decent about it.

It's a soft remake of a Frank Capra movie, and it goes down easy, with a feel-good ending and guy-gets-the-girl story wrapped into a neat package that you'll remember years later. And if you're tired of replaying "Happy Gilmore," this is the one to watch so you don't run that one into the ground.

'The Sandlot'

"The Sandlot" is the summer every kid thinks they remember having. In 1962, new-in-town kid Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) talks his way onto a neighborhood baseball team led by the impossibly cool Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, then takes his stepdad's Babe Ruth-signed ball and launches it over the fence into the yard of a dog the whole block calls the Beast.

Of course, getting the ball is easier said than done, and the entirety of the film is spent with smart jokes, acerbic wit and narration that feels like your best friend telling you how their summer went. A classic to end all nostalgia classics, Smalls is still killing people these days when they go to take it in once more.

Disney+ may soon offer a free tier to compete with YouTube and entice viewers to stay on the streaming service. Adam Smith, Disney's chief product and technology officer, pitched the idea during a company town hall this week. It seems to be one of several ideas Disney is considering to bring in potential customers (h/t Business Insider).

Importantly, there are currently no indications of what shows or movies would be included in this potential free tier of Disney+. Like most streamers, the House of Mouse is trying to figure out how to capture more viewers and their eyeballs. Netflix has even reportedly started testing out the return of free trials, something that would have been unthinkable a year ago.

The rise of YouTube

Despite seeing subscriber growth in the last year, platforms like Netflix and Disney+ remain firmly behind YouTube when it comes to viewership. The most recent Nielsen data shows YouTube with 13.4% TV watch-time compared to Disney+, which had 9.4% in the summer of 2025.

Meanwhile, data from DemandSage shows Netflix topped 325 million subscribers by the end of 2025, a 25 million subscriber increase from 2024. Disney+, conversely, is recovering from a massive drop in 2024, though it still has over 125 million subscribers, per Statista.

Of course, the biggest hurdle in growing subscriber bases for these streaming services is the several price hikes across every streaming service over the last two years. The cost of streaming in 2026 is already more expensive than in years past. Netflix just raised prices again in March, and Disney+ bumped its rates in September of last year.

The big streamers are clearly experimenting. Earlier this year, Disney+ announced "microcontent" and "Verts" (short-form vertical video content) to pull attention away from TikTok and Instagram Reels. Netflix debuted its own vertical videos in April and won't stop recommending video podcasts.

After raking in $1.5 billion in theaters, "Avatar: Fire & Ash" is finally landing on Disney+. Granted, that's less than the first two movies in the series, as I assume a lot of folks were waiting to catch "Fire and Ash" on streaming — that was my plan, at any rate. This threequel picks up not long after the events of "The Way of Water," with the Sully family still reeling after the death of Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), the eldest son of human-turned-Na'vi Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña).

There's hardly time to mourn before a new threat sparks up: a fiery Na'vi tribe led by Varang (Oona Chaplin), who's allied with humanity's forces. It all leads to a showdown that's as visually stunning as the rest in James Cameron's blockbuster series, though the plot does tread much of the same territory as "The Way of Water."

‘Little Brother’ (Netflix)

As a big fan of both "The Eric André Show" and John Cena's unhinged straight man brand of humor, Netflix's new buddy comedy "Little Brother" is at the top of my watchlist this weekend. Cena stars as a successful real estate agent Rudd whose unhappy but stable life is thrown into chaos when his former mentee Marcus (André) reappears with the subtlety of a wrecking ball at the worst time possible.

A walking magnet for trouble, Marcus finds a way to turn every situation into a disaster, which the buttoned-up Rudd is forced to clean up. Judging by the trailer, "Little Brother" leans heavily into slapstick comedy, with Cena playing the exasperated straight man opposite André's off-the-wall energy.

'I Love Boosters' (PVOD)

Boots Riley applies his brand of dark comedy and magical realism to a Robin Hood–style proletarian allegory in "I Love Boosters," a surreal heist comedy I was sad to see do so poorly at the box office despite its 92% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The perennially hilarious Keke Palmer stars as Corvette, an aspiring fashion designer struggling to escape a literal boulder of debt.

To pay it off, she heads an all-women shoplifting crew known as the Velvet Gang that targets high-end San Francisco stores and sells back to her working-class Oakland community. It's enough to catch the attention of ruthless fashion mogul and capitalism incarnate Christie Smith (Demi Moore), and I won't spoil any more than that because it's a wild ride that's better experienced than explained. This is the kind of movie that hits you hard and fast with dazzling visuals and insane ideas, leaving you thinking "What on earth did I just watch?"

'Undertone' (HBO Max)

2026 has been a marquee year for horror movies, and while you're waiting for "Obsession" or "The Backrooms" to hit streaming, HBO Max has a great one to tide you over that you may not have heard of. "Undertone" stars Nina Kiri as Evy, the host of a hit horror podcast who records episodes from home while caring for her ailing mother (Michèle Duquet).

When she and her co-host (Adam DiMarco) receive a mysterious audio recordings of a couple's terrifying paranormal encounters, even the usually skeptical Evy begins to suspect something supernatural is at play. As the chilling tapes reveal something increasingly sinister, she's forced to reckon with the possibility that some ghosts might be real after all.

'The Sheep Detectives' (Prime Video)

One of the year's most delightful surprises, "The Sheep Detectives" puts a clever spin on the classic murder mystery formula. After their beloved shepherd, George (Hugh Jackman), is found dead, a flock of sheep sets out to uncover the truth behind his murder. The result is a witty, heartwarming whodunnit that's just as entertaining for adults as it is for younger viewers.

The stellar voice cast only adds to the fun, with standout performances from Bryan Cranston, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and more. This Amazon Original is the kind of family-friendly mystery that's easy to recommend, though I'll warn you ahead of time to grab the tissues, because this is the kind of comedy that'll make you laugh and cry in equal measure.

'X-Men '97' season 2

Marvel Animation’s revival of the 1990s-era "X-Men: The Animated Series" continues this July with its second season, kicking off on Disney+ with a three-episode premiere on the first day of the month.

The upcoming episodes find the heroic mutant team — including Cyclops (Ray Chase), Jean Gray (Jennifer Hale), Magneto (Matthew Waterson), Storm (Alison Sealy-Smith), Wolverine (Cal Dodd) and Rogue (Lenore Zann), among others — divided and scattered through time, some in the past (from the start of Apocalypse's reign) and others in the future (at the height of his rule).

Meanwhile, back in the '90s, "suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence,” per the official season two description.

'Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston'

Host Tom Hiddleston plays time detective in this three-part National Geographic docudrama, which will be available to stream on both Hulu and Disney Plus. Blending "cinematic scripted drama and investigative documentary storytelling," the series will transport audiences to ancient Rome in the hours before and during the staggering eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

With input from archaeologists, historians, geologists and disaster experts, Hiddleston and Co. piece together stories of real Pompeians caught up in the disaster, including a teenage apprentice, a powerful businesswoman and a mysterious Praetorian Guard. The series "reframes Pompeii not as a story of destruction but as a human drama of resilience, sacrifice and survival," per the official synopsis.

YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream subscribers may be eligible for payment from an antitrust class action lawsuit brought against the Walt Disney Company. The lawsuit claimed that the mega corporation forced YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream to raise subscription prices.

The lawsuit alleged that the claims violated state and federal antitrust and consumer protection laws. Disney settled the case, agreeing to $50 million, though the company denies any wrongdoing, per a report from AL.com.

From court documents I could discover, this lawsuit has been making its way through the court system since at least 2022. And despite the name, the settlement website does appear legitimate.

It comes at an interesting time, as YouTube TV and Disney had a seemingly bitter contract negotiation in late 2025 that briefly saw multiple Disney-owned channels, including ABC and ESPN, disappear from the service. The network carriage bundle ultimately led Google to introduce genre-based subscription bundles, which are cheaper than the current $82 all-in subscription.

Who is eligible?

Per the Online TV settlement website, anyone who had a YouTube TV or DirecTV Stream subscription between April 1, 2019 and March 31, 2026 are eligible for the settlement.

There are two groups who are eligible, "Repealer Jurisdictions" and "Non-repealer Jurisdictions." Repealers include anyone located in Alabama, California, New York, Florida and 36 other states. The full list can be found in this document on page 3. Non-Repealers include anyone living in any other U.S. state or territory.

To claim a portion of the settlement, you must submit a valid claim form by September 8, 2026. Exact details on payout amounts do not appear to be finalized.

If you want to exclude yourself, you must do so by that same date. That request must be mailed to the settlement administrator at Biddle v. Disney, Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 4720, Portland, OR 97208-4720.

A final hearing is scheduled for January 14, 2027, when a judge will approve or not the settlement. If approved, payments would be distributed after that hearing. Typically, these kinds of settlements must be paid in a specific window, usually 90 days.

It should be noted that Fubo TV is part of the lawsuit and apparently has not settled with Disney. That portion of the lawsuit is ongoing.

‘Tuner’ (PVOD)

"Tuner" is one of my favorite thriller movies of 2026 so far, and nowhere near enough people caught it in theaters. Even with its strong 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers did not turn out for this tense watch starring Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman. That’s why I’m hoping its arrival on premium streaming will signal a fresh wave of attention, because it richly deserves a wider viewership. It’s gripping and builds to an excellent finale.

Woodall plays Niki White, an apprentice to renowned New York City piano tuner Harry Horowitz (Hoffman). Suffering from a sensitivity to sound that he describes as an “allergy to loud noises,” he was once a virtuoso but no longer plays. In need of money, he discovers an aptitude for cracking safes and falls in with a criminal gang. At the same time, he meets and starts dating a music student, Ruthie (Havana Rose Liu). But as the stakes get higher, Niki’s two lives are thrown together, and he is forced to face the music.

‘Power Ballad’ (PVOD)

Director John Carney is known for his musical comedies like “Once,” “Sing Street,” and “Begin Again,” and his latest project, “Power Ballad,” falls within the same genre. After all, if you’re good at something, why do anything else? Starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, “Power Ballad” is a generally charming watch, even if it’s not up to the quality of Carney’s best work. Plus, it centers on a stolen song, but the tune in question is pretty terrible.

Rick (Rudd) is the lead singer of a wedding band in Ireland. Once hoping to make it as a serious musician, he gave up his dreams to raise his daughter. When he meets former boy band member Danny (Jonas) at a wedding, the two spend the evening jamming. Weeks later, Rick is stunned when Danny records and takes credit for one of Rick’s original songs, and the track becomes a global hit. Determined to be recognised for his work, Rick sets off to confront Danny, but by doing so risks everything he cares about.

‘Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour’ (PVOD)

Billie Eilish’s biggest concert movie to date was filmed during her globe-spanning Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour, in support of the album of the same name. Shot during Eilish’s sold-out run at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena, this movie gives you the best seat in the house as the American singer rattles through her earworm hits, including “Happier Than Ever, “Birds of a Feather” and “Bad Guy.” It’s a must-watch for dedicated Billie Eilish fans.

Most interesting about this concert film is that Eilish co-directs alongside James Cameron, yes, that James Cameron. On the big screen, it was a 3D event, and while the home streaming release can’t replicate the use of the technology (remember when 3D TVs were a thing?), It’s a very slick production overall. It’s not often you get to enjoy a concert movie starring one of music’s biggest names and directed by a Hollywood legend.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ (Disney+)

Speaking of James Cameron, the latest installment in his box office-conquering “Avatar” franchise heads to Disney+. While this third entry in the sci-fi series did still gross an eye-watering sum, its total was significantly down on its predecessor, so I’m assuming a lot of viewers were waiting to catch “Fire and Ash” on streaming. If you enjoyed the previous two “Avatar” movies, it’s hard to see this one as disappointing, as it offers all the same jaw-dropping visuals and incredible world-building, even if its narrative chops are thin.

In “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” former human turned Na’vi, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), must lead his family into uncharted territory after being targeted by a new fire-obsessed clan, alongside contending with an old enemy, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). The plot is serviceable, though it recycles many beats from “The Way of Water.” But really, who is watching “Avatar” for the plot? This franchise has always been about the visuals, and they’re on point. Still, by the end of its chunky 200-minute runtime, the series does feel like it's starting to run out of gas.

‘In the Hand of Dante’ (Netflix)

“In the Hand of Dante” is one of the week’s more interesting offerings. It’s a drama that packs both flashbacks to a period setting and a modern-day thriller-style storyline that is quite violent. Plus, it offers not one, but two, roles for the typically excellent Oscar Isaac. It’s based on Nick Tosches novel of the same name and also stars Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, John Malkovich, Martin Scorsese, Al Pacino and Jason Momoa. That’s quite the cast list.

In a meta twist, Tosches is a character in the movie, played by Isaac. He’s an author living in New York, recruited by the mafia to confirm the authenticity and steal the Italian poet Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, written in the poet's own hand. This violent modern-day story is intertwined with scenes set in the 14th century. In these, Isaac plays the poet Dante. The NYC portion is presented in black and white, with the historical sequences filmed in full color.

‘Little Brother’ (Netflix)

“Little Brother” is certainly not the first comedy flick to mine humor from the idea of two mismatched siblings. Heck, Hollywood has been recycling this trope for decades. So, I’m confident in saying this new Netflix comedy isn’t going to win many points for originality, but if it can make subscribers laugh, then it’ll have served its primary purpose. With John Cena and Eric André in the lead roles, it may well achieve that important goal.

Cena plays a successful real estate agent who lives an orderly life. This well-maintained lifestyle is thrown into chaos when his eccentric “little brother” (André) appears on the scene and proves to be a walking disaster magnet. The trailer suggests this movie will be heavy on slapstick comedy with Cena playing the straight man and André the unpredictable wild card.

‘Undertone’ (HBO Max)

“Undertone” is a fairly pedestrian horror. Don’t go in expecting a memorable experience akin to current genre favorites “Obsession” and “Backrooms.” However, if you set your expectations accordingly, you might find this supernatural horror decently chilling. Its hook is that it’s built around sound, invoking fear in its viewers with spooky noises. In fact, only two members of the cast appear on screen, with the rest only in voice.

Evy (Nina Kiri) is the host of a popular horror podcast, recording the latest episode from her home, where she also cares for her ailing mother (Michèle Duquet). When Evy and her co-host (Adam DiMarco) are sent a series of audio recordings that chronicle a couple’s paranormal experience, the skeptical Evy is drawn into a terrifying evening of sinister specters. As the night progresses, she’s forced to consider that some ghosts might be real.

As a millennial, I'll confess, stranger things have happened in 2026 than the impending arrival of a fifth film from a beloved '90s franchise.

While I remain sceptical about the new film's logline, I was obsessed with all things Buzz and Woody as a kid, so I have little doubt that Toy Story 5 will have a friend in me when it comes out next week, releasing on June 18, 2026, in Australia.

That said, initial previews suggest that it may be more emotionally devastating than Toy Story 3, so I'm sure it will be a wild ride for all — kids, parents and Disney Adults included.

In the lead-up to the most anticipated animated film of the year, I've gathered 9 Toy Story-inspired Lego sets to celebrate the release, including new builds inspired by the film. Before my viewing, I'm definitely picking up the cute Lego Alien with Pizza Planet Rocket Ride set, and it would be remiss of me not to add the iconic Pixar Luxo Jr. set to my cart, too.

You'll need to jump on your horse to nab these sets, as supplies are only available while stocks last — and some builds have already retired!

Long gone are the days of streaming being the cheaper alternative than cable. I used to think that subscription hopping each month was too much trouble for the money you save, but with streaming prices creeping higher and higher these days, I'm now a convert.

Recently, I decided to cull some of my monthly subscription services as an experiment to see if I was really getting my money's worth. I had my eye on Disney's mega-bundle with Hulu and HBO Max, advertised as a savings of more than 40% when bundled together, but though I was intrigued, I wasn't convinced.

Could limiting my household to just three major streaming platforms really be enough variety to satisfy everyone's tastes? And would the savings actually be significant?

To find out, I decided to go all in. I canceled every standalone streaming subscription I was paying for and switched exclusively to the Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max Bundle with ads for $19.99 per month.

After 30 days, I had my answer. Here's exactly how much money I saved and what I missed most after cutting the cord on my other services.

My 30-day savings report

Before making the switch, I was subscribed to five different services, mostly on their ad-supported tiers because I'm not forking over more money than I need to and I actually don't mind the ad breaks. The regular interruptions keep me from binging things endlessly. With the exception of Netflix, which I did shell out $19.99 a month for the standard option, because its ads are particularly obnoxious.

Beyond that, I had the Disney+ basic plan for $11.99 a month, Peacock for $7.99, HBO Max for $10.99, Paramount+ added another $8.99 a month, and Apple TV at $12.99. All told, I was paying $72 a month for streaming services — which works out to over $860 a year. Wow, it's wild to lay it all out like that and realize I lose nearly a grand each year to streaming.

By consolidating with the trio bundle and cutting the other platforms, I saved $52 in just one month. Over a full year, that puts an extra $624 back into my pocket.

The sheer volume of programming between Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+ left my watchlist plenty full in the meantime. Hulu has a healthy library of comedy shows I've watched a million already but still like to put on in the background, like "Abbott Elementary" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," while HBO Max is home to everything from heavy-hitting blockbusters to indie animated films. Since Disney and Hulu have integrated so seamlessly, browsing through the apps felt seamless. I rarely found myself scrolling aimlessly to find something to watch; if anything, my watchlist only grew.

What I lost (and what I didn't miss)

Netflix and Apple TV were the hardest ones to let go. I’m a chronic re-watcher, and my biggest concern was losing access to comfort shows like "Bad Sisters" or Netflix's vast library of documentaries.

I thought I would experience severe FOMO without Netflix. When really, unless a massive cultural phenomenon drops a new season, the Netflix homepage has felt increasingly cluttered with content I skip past anyway. Meanwhile, Apple TV has such a sparse calendar of releases that I plan to just re-subscribe when a new season of "Severance" or one of its other must-watch shows drops.

What started as a 30-day budgeting challenge has turned into a long-term switch. I expected culling my list of subscriptions to feel like a compromise, but in practice, it felt more like clearing out unnecessary noise I hardly missed while keeping an extra $52 in my bank account every month. If you're considering cutting down on your streaming subscriptions, I'd encourage you to take a closer look at how much you actually use the platforms you pay for. The potential savings might be more than you think.

It’s set to be a very busy week for new movies across the best streaming services. Over the coming days, the biggest platforms around will be competing for your attention with Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock and Disney+ all offering new flicks for subscribers to enjoy.

With so many options, it’s hard to know where to start, but I suspect the biggest hit of the week will be the new rom-com “Office Romance” on Netflix, which stars “Ted Lasso’s” Brett Goldstein alongside Jennifer Lopez. However, if a glossy rom-com isn’t your speed, there’s overlooked horror “Hokum” on premium streaming, Pixar’s latest family adventure “Hoppers” on Disney Plus, and “Pillion” on HBO Max, an erotic drama with Alexander Skarsgård.

Below, I’ve combed through all the most notable new movies across streaming services and picked out the ones you need to know about. Plus, don’t forget to see our companion guide covering all the top new TV shows on streaming this week.

‘Hokum’ (PVOD)

It’s been a fantastic year for new horror movies, and while “Obsession” and “Backrooms” currently have a lock on the box office, supernatural chiller “Hokum” didn’t quite get its own moment in the spotlight. That’s a shame, as this horror flick, directed by Damian McCarthy, is one that genre fans won’t want to miss. Even as a horror veteran desensitized to the genre’s usual tricks, there’s a large section of this movie that really freaked me out.

Ohm Bauman (Adam Scott) is an American author crippled by writer’s block. To remedy this, he takes a trip to rural Ireland, specifically to spread his parents' ashes at the hotel where they honeymooned several decades previously. Once on location, Ohm learns of local superstitions that claim a ghostly witch haunts the honeymoon suite. In classic horror movie fashion, he decides to investigate, leading to an evening of spooky apparitions.

‘I Swear’ (PVOD)

“I, Swear” is something of an infamous movie. Due to the unfortunate (and unacceptable) events at the 2026 BAFTAs, the actual movie has been lost in the fallout. Hopefully, its arrival on premium streaming in the U.S. this week will shift the conversation, as the film itself deserves recognition. It stands as an excellent biographical comedy-drama that highlights the very real struggles faced every day by those dealing with Tourette's syndrome.

Inspired by the real-life story of John Davidson, a working-class Scot and Tourette's awareness campaigner, “I, Swear” sees Robert Aramayo play Davidson. Aramayo gives an award-winning performance that will be eligible for consideration at next year’s Oscars. The movie follows Davidson’s life, from his schoolyard struggles in the 1980s through to grappling with Tourette's as an adult and becoming a campaigner to raise awareness of the disorder. This movie is often very funny, but most of all, it's heartwarming and inspirational.

‘Hoppers’ (Disney+)

Pixar’s latest family movie has all the hallmarks of the beloved animation studio. A cast of adorable and likeable characters? Check. A sweet story with an emotional pull? Check. Some of the best animation in the business? Double-check. If you wanted to be cynical, you could accuse it of being Pixar on autopilot, but the studio’s formula has been delighting viewers of all ages for decades, and it’s hard to see “Hoppers” as anything but charming.

Mabel Tanaka (voiced by Piper Curda) is a rebellious teenager with a love of animals and nature passed down to her by her grandma. When the mayor of Beavertown announces plans to convert a forest glade, which is deeply special to Mabel, into a freeway, the teen springs into action. Discovering a scientific program that lets her inhabit the body of a beaver, she steps into the animal kingdom to lead the charge against the mayor’s plans.

‘Office Romance’ (Netflix)

Brett Goldstein is building a streaming dynasty. After starring in “Ted Lasso,” he went on to co-create the equally acclaimed series “Shrinking” for Apple TV. Now he’s taking his talents to Netflix as a co-writer of this new romantic comedy, which centers around, you’ve guessed it, an office romance. Goldstein stars as the male lead and is paired up with Jennifer Lopez to form a ludicrously attractive coupling. My vibe check is that critics might not embrace this new streaming original, but I have little doubt it’ll soar to Netflix No. 1.

Jackie Cruz (Lopez) is the demanding CEO of Air Cruz airline. She runs a very tight ship with a strict no-workplace-relationship policy. Forget working hard and playing hard, Jackie is all work. However, when lawyer Daniel Blanchflower (Goldstein) joins the company, the two have instant chemistry, which soon blossoms into a full-blown romance. Naturally, this creates a headache as Jackie has to pick between business and pleasure.

‘Keeper’ (Hulu)

Speaking of dynasties, Osgood Perkins is quickly becoming one of the top names in the horror genre. After helming “Longlegs” and “The Monkey” and producing the current No. 1 movie in North America, “Backrooms,” Perkins is becoming a bankable filmmaker. However, his 2025 effort “Keeper” is perhaps something of an anomaly in that regard, as this folk-style horror came and went without much fanfare. Maybe it’ll pick up steam now that it’s heading to Hulu.

Starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland, “Keeper” centers on a free-spirited artist, Liz (Maslany), who is taken to a remote cabin in the countryside by her boyfriend (Sutherland) to celebrate the couple's first anniversary. Once in the secluded setting, terrifying visions haunt Liz, and that’s just the start of this nightmare trip. “Keeper” was no critical darling (it scores just 50% on Rotten Tomatoes), but it could be worth a watch if you’re looking for seriously unsettling moments, as it packs quite a few.

‘Pillion’ (HBO Max)

A word of warning: do not watch “Pillion” with your parents. This extremely erotic drama leaves almost nothing to the imagination and would likely lead to some very uncomfortable silences. Still, for all the headlines it made for its graphic scenes, there’s a lot more to “Pillion.” For starters, you’ve got an immaculate performance from Alexander Skarsgård, playing an effortlessly cool biker. Oh, and the movie is gorgeously shot as well.

Colin (Harry Melling) is an introvert working a menial job and struggling with self-confidence. His world is changed after an encounter with Ray (Skarsgård), who is pretty much the polar opposite. When Ray decides to take on Colin as his submissive, the once timid Colin begins to come out of his shell and discovers a whole new side of himself. This is no “50 Shades of Grey” situation, as “Pillion” scores an impressive 99% on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Lorne’ (Peacock)

“Saturday Night Live” has left an undeniable imprint on the world of comedy and television as a whole, and for almost all of its five-decade run, producer Lorne Michaels has been guiding the ship from the wings. His eye for spotting comedic talent is legendary, and this documentary from Academy Award-winner Morgan Neville (“20 Feet from Stardom,” “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”) highlights the producer extraordinaire.

With input from a host of SNL favorites, including Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Chris Rock, Steve Martin, Seth Meyers, Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg and more (so many more), “Lorne” is a loving tribute to the often-unseen force behind the scenes who shaped comedy and culture for generations. It’s a documentary that will appeal to “Saturday Night Live” superfans and those less familiar with the sketch show alike. Just don’t expect this documentary to ask any hard-hitting questions, as it’s more of an affectionate celebration of Lorne Michaels career.

Last week, when Disney finally enabled profile merging between Hulu and Disney+, the media giant promised that there were "no current plans" to sunset the Hulu app. That promise may have been made too soon.

Business Insider reported that an internal memo reveals Disney is working on shutting down the standalone Hulu streaming app. The memo allegedly reveals a plan dubbed "Project Gemini" that brings Hulu's content to Disney+.

It's part of an overall plan that Disney has discussed to bring a unified experience between the various streaming options the company owns. Project Gemini is supposed to be completed by the end of 2026.

"The Hulu tech stack and app will be decommissioned after all users have transitioned," BI reports. An unnamed insider said that Hulu is on "life support."

You can already watch select Hulu shows on Disney+, and it's possible that Disney will offer a distinct Hulu package even if the standalone app disappears later this year.

How to link your Hulu profile to Disney+

Before the Hulu app goes away, you may want to link your Hulu profile to Disney+. Doing so will bring your Hulu watch history, watchlist and recommendations into Disney+. It will even let you pick up where you left off on shows and movies that you were already watching.

Navigate to the Disney+ app or the disneyplus.com website. Once there, sign in with the same MyDisney login that you use for Hulu.

You should be prompted to link your Hulu profile to an existing Disney+ profile. Once linked, you should see your Hulu history and recommendations in the "For You" tab on the Home screen.

As of this writing, 18+ Hulu profile linking is not yet available, though Disney has promised it will be an option soon. It will be available for eligible Disney+ and Hulu bundle subscribers and Disney+, Hulu and ESPN bundle subscribers. Linking for all bundle subscribers is supposed to arrive later this year.

With summer right around the corner, the Disney+ June 2026 lineup is ready to crank up the heat. This month's slate is a winner for music festival junkies and "Avatar" devotees alike, with the long-awaited blockbuster debut of the third film headlining a busy month.

The highlights kick off June 10 with "Dragon Striker," an animated sports fantasy following a farm boy named Key who discovers his powerful natural talent and joins a scrappy team to challenge elite academy champions. The next day, June 11, the Bonnaroo Livestream kicks off, beaming the Manchester, Tennessee festival straight to your couch with sets from The Strokes, Noah Kahan, Skrillex, Kesha, and more. It turns out that there's an old evil slumbering that could end up threatening life as Key and his friends know it.

This year's Bonnaroo festival, taking place in Manchester, TN, celebrates music and the arts. 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'

In the third installment of the "Avatar" series and the follow-up to "Avatar: The Way of Water", Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) returns, alongside his family on the moon Pandora, as they face their biggest threat yet: the Na'vi clan of the Mangkwan. Following the death of Jake and Neytiri's son Neteyam, the Sully family must protect the rest of the clan from the Mangkwan and RDA invaders. Comedy and crime collide in spectacular fashion in hit sitcom "Deli Boys", and Mir and Raj are not finished yet. In fact, things are about to get even more crazy with the second season.

"The Mandalorian and Grogu" just wrapped up its first weekend at the box office, but you might already be wondering when you can watch it at home. After all, a night out at the movies is expensive, and the reviews for this movie ... well, let's just say the force might not be strong with this one.

Currently, the feature-length chapter of "The Mandalorian" has a 63% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I didn't rate it particularly highly either, giving it just a 2.5 out of 5 stars rating in my official "The Mandalorian and Grogu" review. It's worth noting, though, that audiences rate it highly, giving it an 88% fresh rating on the review aggregator.

But regardless of whether you're not sold on seeing one of the biggest movies of the summer in theaters, you don't have the time to go out, or you'd prefer to watch at home, don't worry; I've got you covered. Here's when I predict "The Mandalorian and Grogu" is coming to streaming, and where you'll be able to stream it.

Where will you be able to stream 'The Mandalorian and Grogu'?

The good news is I don't have to guess which of the best streaming services you'll be able to watch this movie on at home.

First, it will get a digital release on premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms like Amazon, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. Then, you'll eventually be able to stream "The Mandalorian and Grogu" on Disney+.

When could 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' arrive on streaming?

Guessing when you'll be able to stream this movie at home is a little tricky. There hasn't been a new Star Wars movie since "The Rise of Skywalker" in 2019, and everything is different today, nearly seven years later.

But Star Wars is produced by Lucasfilm, and that's owned by Disney, just like Pixar and Marvel. So I'm going to use two recent Disney movies as a reference point to make my prediction.

"Zootopia 2" is the most recent example of a Disney blockbuster coming to Disney+. It came out in theaters on Nov. 26, 2025, then hit PVOD on Jan. 27, 2026, before finally arriving on Disney+ on March 11. That means it took 62 days from theatrical debut until you could buy or rent at home, and then a further 43 days for it to stream on Disney+.

"The Fantastic Four: First Steps" was another major Disney movie from last year, and Marvel and Lucasfilm share a lot of fans. So it could make sense for Disney to copy the model it used in the most recent MCU movie. It debuted in theaters on July 25, 2025, then came to PVOD 61 days later on Sept. 23. Then, 43 days later, it arrived on Disney+. That's essentially the same pattern as "Zootopia 2."

So with that information, I can predict with decent accuracy when you'll be able to watch "The Mandalorian and Grogu" at home:

You should be able to buy or rent "The Mandalorian and Grogu" digital release on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, though it could come a week earlier on July 21.

You should then be able to stream "The Mandalorian and Grogu" on Disney+ on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, though again, it could come a week earlier on Sept. 2 2.

It’s easy to rack up an eye-watering monthly streaming bill without really noticing; in fact, streaming services bank on it. Mix this with a dash of financial carelessness, and boom, it’s a recipe for far too many monthly fees coming out of my bank account.

That made now the perfect time to get a full picture of exactly how much I was spending per month on streaming, and more importantly, to whittle down my spend to something more plattable.

I was overdue for a rethink of my subscription spending

Until now, I hadn’t realized quite how much I was spending per month on streaming. If you’d asked me to estimate a total, I’d probably have said in the region of $50 max. But after combing through my bank balance (note to self: I also spend far too much money on groceries each week), I was quite stunned to discover that I’ve been paying about $90 per month.

That cost doesn’t even factor in other monthly expenses like my gym membership, unlimited cinema card and annual PlayStation Plus subscription, which are all non-negotiables for me, so they were off the table when it came time to figure out a way to reduce my expenditure.

Still, $90 per month is far too much to spend on streaming services, and I don’t even have the spare time to make proper use of all these platforms at once. It was time to get serious about unsubscribing to at least some of them. That money could be better used elsewhere.

My methodology for determining which streamers to cancel was simple, but effective. Because I’m paying monthly for each, I decided to audit how often I actually used each service. If I’m paying $15+ each month for a service, I should be using it pretty regularly, right?

With this method, I was able to reduce my streaming spend to $36 per month, a 60% drop. Below are the results of my audit and my rationale for which service I'm keeping and the ones I'm waving goodbye to (for now).

Streaming services: Keep or cancel

Netflix ($19.99)

This was probably the easiest call to make. Netflix is the world’s most popular streaming service, and to give you a peek into how the sausage is made, the platform that Tom’s Guide readers are most interested in reading about. Plus, it’s the streamer I use the most by a wide margin, and I split the monthly cost with my partner. I'm definitely keeping Netflix.

Decision: Keep

Amazon Prime ($14.99)

Like most people, I get access to Prime Video as part of my ongoing Amazon Prime subscription. I had thought this would be another easy call to keep. However, much like my colleague Mike Prospero recently found, when I dug into how much I actually use Amazon Prime benefits, I was surprised to see how rarely I order items from Amazon (and I've never even touched Prime Music). And while Prime Video does have a solid library, I buy/rent movies on the platform more often than I watch Prime content, so I’ve decided to cancel, and can always resubscribe down the line.

Decision: Cancel

Paramount+ ($13.99)

There's a caveat with this one. I’ve been enjoying Paramount+ for almost a year as part of a free trial. It’s a good service, maybe even a bit underrated. I love having access to every episode of “South Park” for background streaming. However, I’m a movie guy first and foremost, and I don’t use the platform near enough to start paying for it when the trial ends.

Decision: Cancel

Disney Plus ($15.99)

I’ve had Disney+ since it launched, and to be honest, I don’t know why. Like most millennials, I have heaps of nostalgia for the House of Mouse's vast vault, and until I was struck down with a wicked case of Marvel fatigue a few years ago, I was a huge MCU fan. However, I seldom use the service, and when looking for something to watch, Disney+ is rarely, if ever, my streamer of choice. With constant price hikes, Disney+ is getting axed.

Decision: Cancel

YouTube Premium ($15.99)

A big part of me really wants to cancel YouTube Premium. I used YouTube daily without Premium for more than 15 years without (much) issue. But after experiencing ad-free YouTube (and the extra benefits Premium brings like offline downloads), it would be mighty tough to go back now. There’s also the consideration that YouTube is the platform I use the most on this list by a mile (I’m addicted to watching Jet Lag: The Game at present). So, I do get an awful lot of value from Premium. I’m keeping it for now, but I’m definitely open to changing my mind at a later date.

Decision: Keep

Audible ($8.99)

It’s no tin-foil-hat conspiracy theory to believe that subscription services hope you sign up and then forget. That’s the case with Audible and me. I didn’t even know I was still signed up. And hey, I like audiobooks, but it takes me months to get through just one, and I’ve now built up half a dozen “credits.” I’ll spend those, and then Audible will be canceled quickly.

Decision: Cancel

How many streaming services do you actually need?

My biggest takeaway from this process was really pondering how many streaming services one person needs. There are only 24 hours in a day (and a big chunk of that spent in sleep) and more content than you could watch in a lifetime out there. Does anybody really need to subscribe to five or six platforms all at once?

I know I sure don’t. Sometimes it's easy to subscribe to a streamer for a particular show or movie you don’t want to miss, and then sit on the subscription for months until the next “must-watch” piece of content arrives. I’m not saying I’ll never return to the likes of Disney+ or Amazon Prime, but I'll be selective. I’ll adopt the mindset of subbing, canceling, resubbing (repeat) as needed, rather than just subscribing indefinitely.

If you’re also subscribed to more services than you probably need, I encourage you to take stock of your own streaming portfolio. Consider how often you use each one, and how much you’d miss not having access to them today. You might be surprised how much money that can save.

Disney Plus and Hulu have been slowly merging into one behemoth app like a streaming version of 'The Thing'. Starting today (May 20) though, Disney is adding several Hulu-related features to your Plus profile.

This involves linking your Hulu profile to Disney Plus. Linking the two adds your watch history, watchlist and Hulu recommendations into the Disney app. It makes one of the best streaming services even better.

Disney has plans to fully merge Hulu and Disney Plus onto the same technical platform per a report from Variety. For now though, the Hulu app lives on.

A spokesperson told the magazine that "there are no current plans to sunset the Hulu app."

How to link your Hulu profile with Disney Plus

You need to download the Disney Plus app or go to the disneyplus.com website. Once there sign-in with the same MyDisney login that you use for Hulu.

The app should prompt you to link your Hulu profile to an existing Disney Plus profile. One you've linked your profiles, you'll be able to choose avatars from Hulu alongside the existing Disney Plus ones.

According to Disney, 18+ Hulu profile linking isn't available yet but should arrive in the coming days. This will be available for eligible Disney Plus and Hulu bundle, and Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN bundle subscribers. Linking for all bundle subscribers is coming later this year.

Apparently, you do not need a Disney Plus subscription to link. However, if you don't have one you'll get a "small sampling" of Disney Plus and ESPN content. This is mostly to get you to sign up for one of the Disney Plus bundles.

Finding your Hulu content in Disney Plus

One your profile is linked, you'll be able to see your Hulu watch history and recommendations in the "For You" tab on the Home screen. Hulu already has a dedicated hub on Disney Plus that you can find in the Hulu tab in the navigation bar.

Shows and movies you've already started in Hulu will appear in the "Continue Watching" section of the app. Media you've put in the "My Stuff" list on Hulu will now appear in the Disney Plus "Watchlist" section too.

Disney says that it will start testing a new "Live Guide" to find live content which will include the ABC News Live and Disney Plus Playtime streams as well as ESPN networks. Hulu adds-ons like Live TV will stay in the Hulu app for now though.

Right now, we’re in the yearning era, a time where films and TV shows have collectively decided that restraint and pining are infinitely more compelling than instant gratification. Prime Video’s newest No. 1 show “Off Campus” is the latest addition to the trend, centering on characters who clearly want each other but refuse to admit it just yet. Having binge-watched the entire season, it leans heavily into the slow-burn formula, and it joins a long line of shows that treat longing as one of the most powerful parts of the story.

If you enjoyed the competitive hockey aspect of “Off Campus,” along with the insane amount of yearning, you’ll want to stream “Heated Rivalry.” Based on the bestselling novel by Rachel Reid, the series became a massive hit on HBO Max when it premiered in 2025. Naturally, it was renewed for season 2 almost instantly, largely thanks to its ability to break barriers with a high-budget mainstream TV series centered around a queer relationship. Beyond that, it’s incredibly steamy and romantic, telling a deeply intimate story about vulnerability and connection.

“Heated Rivalry” follows Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie), two elite hockey players drafted to rival professional teams whose intense competition on the ice slowly turns into a complicated private relationship. Spanning several years of their careers, the series tracks how the pair repeatedly cross paths through games and major life changes while trying to keep their connection hidden from the public eye.

‘Maxton Hall’

Prime Video has another yearning-filled show worth checking out, and that’s “Maxton Hall.” It’s an adaptation of Mona Kasten’s German romance novel, the first book in her popular trilogy. The series is an addictive, highly aesthetic teen drama centered around an intense enemies-to-lovers romance, which is a trope I’ll always fall back on. What makes it even more interesting is that, despite being a German-language show, it’s set almost entirely in England and features some seriously impressive locations and set pieces.

Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten) is a determined scholarship student attending an elite private school. Focused on earning a place at Oxford University, Ruby tries to stay unnoticed until she accidentally discovers a secret connected to the influential Beaufort family. This brings her into conflict with James Beaufort (Damian Hardung), the arrogant heir to a massive fortune who will do anything to protect his family’s reputation. As the two are repeatedly pushed together through school events and personal circumstances, their lives become increasingly intertwined.

‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’

HBO Max has another critically acclaimed series worth adding to your watchlist, and that’s “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” a comedy-drama that offers a fresh, modern, and unfiltered look at female friendship in the Gen-Z era. I think most people know the iconic, generation-defining American teen and young adult drama series that originally aired from 2003 to 2012, “One Tree Hill.” Spanning nine seasons, it’s one of the defining staples of 2000s TV melodrama. The show tracks an ensemble cast of characters through their turbulent high school years in the fictional small town of Tree Hill. Rather than focusing on hockey like “Off Campus,” it centres on basketball and the pressures of excelling in the sport.

“One Tree Hill” follows the lives of half-brothers Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty), who share the same father but grow up in completely different worlds. “Bridgerton” might be an odd comparison on paper, but similar to “Off Campus,” it focuses on a different couple each season. Not to mention, the yearning is off the charts. If you somehow didn’t know, “Bridgerton” is an absolute juggernaut of a historical romance-drama streaming on Netflix. Adapted from Julia Quinn’s novels, each season focuses on a different sibling as they enter the competitive “marriage mart” in search of love. There are also several tropes like fake dating, enemies-to-lovers, friends-to-lovers, and more.

Netflix’s “Bridgerton” follows the powerful Bridgerton family as they move through high society in Regency-era London, where reputation, status, and marriage prospects shape their everyday lives. Season 1 centers around Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of a prominent family, as she enters society’s competitive marriage “season” in search of a suitable match. Daphne’s prospects shift when she forms a fake relationship with the charismatic Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page).

If I could only recommend that you stream one movie right now, it'd be "Send Help," which recently came to Hulu and Disney+. I've already watched dozens of new movies in 2026, but I think Sam Raimi's thriller/horror-comedy is still hands down one of my favorite new watches of the year so far.

If you didn't catch it earlier this year, "Send Help" is a survival thriller with Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien, and it is brilliantly entertaining. Twisty, surprising and very funny. I think "Send Help" is an absolute riot; as long as you've got the stomach for its grosser moments, I'm confident you'll have a great time if you stream it on Hulu.

What is 'Send Help' about?

"Send Help" revolves around Linda Liddle, a reliable, overlooked corporate strategist (and "Survivor" megafan), and her arrogant new boss, Bradley Preston (Dylan O'Brien).

En route to a business meeting, their plane crashes over the ocean, and the two wash up on a deserted island as the only survivors. Stranded, the pair are forced to set aside their differences and work together in order to stay alive... but out in the wild, that devolves into a devilish battle of wits between the two as they fight for their lives on their new island home.

In addition to McAdama and O'Brien, "Send Help" also features Edyll Ismail, Dennis Haysbert, Xavier Samuel, Chris Pang, Thaneth Warakulnukroh and Emma Raimi.

'Send Help' is a gnarly, gloriously fun horror/comedy

I saw "Send Help" not long after it hit the big screen, and my full showing was soundtracked with gasps, laughs and the odd wince in one of the film's grimmer moments. And that's understandable, because this is a truly wild film in every sense of the word.

Sam Raimi's latest is a gnarly, unpredictable thrill ride set in an unforgiving setting, and it just works. It's sharply written, pacy, has a great sense of humor, turning even a fraught struggle with a boar or the grim spectacle of a plane crash into wickedly entertaining moments, yet still manages to maintain that tension.

It wouldn't work without two very game leads in the mix, and thankfully, Raimi has exactly that with McAdams and O'Brien. The film puts them through the wringer, and they bring so much energy to every single scene. All in all, it's just delightfully entertaining, both as a survival thriller and a horror comedy.

You don't just need to take my word for it, either, as "Send Help" comes well recommended. At the time of writing, it's still sitting at 93% from critics over on Rotten Tomatoes (from more than 280 accredited reviews), and it has an audience score that's not much lower (87%). It also narrowly missed out on third place when we asked our readers to vote for the best new movie of 2026 so far back in March.

Reviewing for RogerEbert.com, Richard Roeper gave the film a 3.5/4 star rating, who said McAdams delivers "what just might be the best performance of her career" and summed the film up as an "R-rated, Sam Raimi thrill ride with projectile vomiting, flying ropes of blood, and a handful of scenes that fly so off the rails that you wonder if we’re in the middle of a dream sequence, or the mayhem is real."

At Time Out, Phil de Semlyen gave it four stars, calling the film "a major return to form for the 'Evil Dead' man" and "a gloriously over-the-top battle of wits that plays out like a violent mix of 'Cast Away,' 'Misery,' 'Lord of the Flies,' and a day out with Bear Grylls."

It also earned the same rating from Empire's Helen O'Hara, who pitches it as "exactly the kind of Sam Raimi film his fans have been waiting for."

Simply put, if you're looking for something for a feral survival thriller to stream this week, you're going to want to add "Send Help" to your watchlist.

If you love nothing more than watching an action star take the fight to the bad guys, there's plenty to look forward to in May 2026; whether you're after big-screen, blockbuster thrills, a revenge thriller, or some superhero action, there's at least one high-octane release coming our way this month that you're not going to want to miss.

If you're still planning your viewing for the month, I've just scoured the release schedules of all the best streaming services and movie theaters and picked out seven new movies and TV shows that look like they'll sate your appetite for action.

What to watch in May if you love action

'Citadel' season 2

Several years (and multiple spin-offs) later, The Russo Brothers' original globetrotting spy thriller series is returning to Prime Video this May.

"Citadel" Season 2 will find surviving Citadel operatives Mason Kane (Richard Madden), Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) and spymaster Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci) pulled back into action to face down a terrifying new threat. To confront it, they'll need some extra help, and so the trio must recruit an unlikely team of skilled operatives and mount another globe-spanning mission to confront a unravel a new conspiracy that has the potential to reshape humanity.

Premieres May 6 on Prime Video

'M.I.A'

"M.I.A." is a new Peacock original created by Bill Dubuque ("Ozark"), and the streamer promises this nine-part series (which is dropping in full in early May) is "action-packed."

"M.I.A." centers on Etta Tiger Jonze (Shannon Gisela), a restless woman in the Florida Keys who dreams of a life in Miami's sub-tropical kingdom. When her family's drug-running business is upended by tragedy, she embarks on a dangerous journey for revenge into the criminal underbelly of Miami — a journey that we're told will define who she is, and what she's capable.

Premieres May 7 on Peacock

'Mortal Kombat II'

We'll soon be able to see the latest instalment in this fighting game franchise, as "Mortal Kombat II" will be pitting its competitors against one another in suitably brutal fashion on the big screen.

This time around, the fan-favorite champions — including Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) — are being summoned to face one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred contest to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

In theaters May 8

'The Punisher: One Last Kill'

Before he crops up in "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" later this year, Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) is suiting up for his own Marvel Television special: "The Punisher: One Last Kill," which hits Disney+ in mid-May.

The special finds the titular vigilante searching for meaning beyond seeking revenge, though he's pulled back into the fight by some unexpected force. You can see this in action in the trailer: it starts out meditatively, but soon, Frank sporting his iconic vest, brawling and dispatching his foes in suitably lethal fashion.

Premieres May 12 on Disney+

'Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War'

Later this month, John Krasinski's Jack Ryan is being (reluctantly!) thrust back into the field for a new, feature-length mission on Prime Video.

Operating in real time, "Ghost War" reunites Ryan with CIA operative Mike November (Michael Kelly) and former CIA boss James Greer (Wendell Pierce) and teams him with MI6 officer Emma Marlowe (Sienna Miller). Together, the team confront an escalating threat, navigate a treacherous web of betrayal, buried secrets, and an enemy that appears to know their every move...

Premieres May 20 on Prime Video

'The Mandalorian & Grogu'

Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his adorable pal Grogu have left Disney+ behind and are blasting their way into theaters for "The Mandalorian and Grogu," the first big-screen Star Wars adventure since "The Rise of Skywalker."

Following the fall of the Empire, The Mandalorian bounty hunter and his apprentice have been recruited by the New Republic for what Disney has called "their most thrilling mission yet." And, from everything we've seen so far, it sure looks like it'll deliver on that promise.

In theaters May 22

'Spider-Noir'

The final thing I'd make sure to catch this month is "Spider-Noir," a new live-action series outing for the Marvel character you've doubtless enjoyed seeing alongside Miles Morales in Sony's "Spider-Verse" movies.

The show (which you can enjoy in "Authentic Black & White" or "True-Hue Full Color") sees private investigator Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage) hired to take on a couple of apparently straightforward cases... but mobsters, monsters and a mysterious femme female spin a web that sees him face to face with his old life as New York City's only super-hero: The Spider.

Premieres on MGM+ May 25 or Prime Video on May 27

May is officially here, and Disney+ is rolling out a fresh slate of notable additions worth putting on your radar. 'Travis Japan Summer Vacation!! in the USA'

This reality series sends Japanese boy band Travis Japan on a North American road trip through the Rocky Mountain. Split into teams, one group takes on the journey by RV while the other takes the time to immerse itself in local culture. It could be a vacation special similar to the likes of other American bands' tour diaries, but this show takes the time to introduce you to the boys as well as offer some time to get to know their music and personalities while they take in the American culture permeating every area around them.

'The Punisher: One Last Kill'

Frank Castle returns for another round of gritty violence in this "special presentation". This time, however, he's looking to find some kind of meaning in the violence beyond the pure drive for revenge that's always fueled him. He's seemingly backed away from the killing game for a while, but there's a mysterious force that brings him back into the fold for another confrontation -- details are sparse as to what, but you can bet it's going to be bloody.

'Battle of Fates'

This Korean competition show centers on 49 "fate readers" skilled in shamanism, saju, tarot, and face reading. They're all set to prove who can genuinely read someone's destiny. That makes it a bit of a more psychological bid than usual -- how can you see if someone's future and fate can actually be read? We'll find out when this unique twist on classic game shows debuts and all of these contestants' abilities are put to the test.

Disney+ Australia pricing is getting a revamp... in the form of two price hikes and a brand-new affordable tier.

To appeal to budget-conscious viewers, Disney+ has launched a new ad-supported subscription tier alongside its existing Standard and Premium tiers in Australia. The new plan is priced at AU$9.99 per month, which, according to our research, aligns with the average for an ad-supported tier (commonly known as "Basic" or "Standard with Ads") across streaming services in Australia.

The new tier introduction isn't totally surprising for Disney+ — the streamer has already introduced ad-supported tiers in other global markets like the U.S. — but the change comes with a downside for existing subscribers: the Standard and Premium tiers are receiving a price hike.

Standard monthly subscribers will see their plans increase from AU$15.99p/m to AU$17.99p/m, with annual subs increasing to AU$179.99p/y from AU$159.99p/y. Premium plans will increase from AU$20.99 to AU$24.99 monthly, and from AU$219.99 to AU$249.99 yearly.

This is the second price increase in the last 18 months, with the Premium tier increasing by AU$4 in March last year to accommodate new content inclusions from major hubs like ESPN and Hulu.

Disney+ states that this new hike will allow it to "continue to curate an extensive collection of global content, award-winning originals, and quality storytelling" for consumers. Some of the latest additions to Disney+'s content lineup include the live stream of The Devil Wears Prada 2 world premiere and the upcoming NBA Finals.

New tier features and trade-offs

For those with tighter purse strings, Disney+'s new offering could be worth the switch if you can't swallow the new price of your existing tier.

Crucially, like other basic streaming tiers, Disney+'s latest plan will have limited ads per viewing, which is beyond tolerable if you've ever endured an hour of ad-filled cable television. However, unlike ad-supported tiers offered by Binge and Netflix, Disney+ will have two concurrent streams, which is perfect for families or those who share streaming accounts.

When it comes to inclusions, the Standard with Ads tier is on par with the existing Standard tier, so Disney+ isn't skimping when it comes to quality. The tier streams in 1080p HD resolution and up to 5.1 audio quality, which is consistent with most standard streaming plans. The only downside of the ad-supported tier is that there are no content downloads for offline viewing or access to higher 4K resolution or Dolby Atmos audio, which are exclusive to the Premium tier.

That said, at the time of writing, Disney+'s cheapest plan doesn't offer an annual subscription. However, the streamer offers an annual subscription for both Standard and Premium tiers, which could be more cost-effective than a monthly subscription if you have multiple users and more screens to stream on.

If you had told me twenty years ago that the sequel to my favourite film ever would be officially making its runway debut, I would have cried. And if you told me that one of the best streaming services, Disney+, would be airing its world premiere, I probably would have cried harder.

That's right — the impeccably styled, yet equally savage 2006 comedy, "The Devil Wears Prada", has joined the reboot gang with a long-awaited sequel hitting theaters on April 30. However, ten days earlier, on April 20, the stars of the franchise will hit the red carpet for the world premiere at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Fortunately for those of us without an exclusive invite to the star-studded event, Disney+ is delivering fans a front-row seat in a special livestream of the premiere, starting at 5:30pm EST / 10:30pm GMT / April 21 7:30am AEST. And if you can't stream it live, a full replay will be available following the event.

This fun live experience is sure to delight longtime fans of the original film, and will feature celebrity arrivals, cast interviews, special surprises and of course, jaw-dropping fashion moments. The film's talented cast and filmmakers will be in attendance, including the queen herself, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, and Caleb Hearon.

The only catch? You'll need a Disney+ subscription to catch every runway-ready detail.

What next for Runway magazine?

Unless you have a photographic memory of every iconic moment that happens in "The Devil Wears Prada", here's a quick refresher. The beloved 2006 film follows Andy (Anne Hathaway), an aspiring journalist hired as a personal assistant for the infamous Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine.

Andy doesn't quite fit in with the Runway clique but ends up taking it (and her job) by storm. Without divulging too many plot points, by the end of the film, Andy is hired by a newspaper as a journalist, ending her employment with Miranda. And unbeknownst to Andy, Miranda tells Andy's new boss that he'd be an idiot not to hire her.

As for what we know about the new sequel, and from the looks of the trailer, it's sure to be a riot. As per the logline, Andy returns to Runway as Miranda navigates a new media landscape and Runway's position within it. They reconnect with another former assistant, Emily (Emily Blunt), who is now the head of a luxury brand that possesses funding which could ensure Runway's survival.

In case you need me between now and April 30, I'll be busy rewatching the original film at least 50 times in the next two weeks. And in the famous words of Miranda Priestly, "That's all."

'Dan in Real Life'

From "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" to "Crazy, Stupid, Love," Steve Carell's got some veritable hits in the old rom-com genre, but one of his best is the lesser-known love-triangle comedy "Dan in Real Life." The 2007 Peter Hedges-directed flick finds "The Office" alum playing single-dad-of-three Dan Burns, whose professional expertise as a relationship advice columnist hasn't exactly translated to personal success in the love department.

Things get even more romantically complicated for Dan when he has a seemingly simple meet-cute with the woman of his dreams Marie (played by Juliette Binoche), only to later discover that she's actually the new girlfriend of his younger brother (Dane Cook) and he'll be forced to spend an entire weekend under the same roof as the couple during the Burns' annual family gathering in Rhode Island. Romantic hijinks understandably ensue!

'Rye Lane'

We have a soft spot for romance movies that mostly have two characters simply walking around, talking and, yes, falling for each other ("Lost in Translation," the "Before" trilogy, etc.), and "Rye Lane" is one of the loveliest recent additions to that grand tradition.

Directed by Raine Allen-Miller in her feature directorial debut, the 2023 rom-com centers on Yas (Vivian Oparah) and Dom (David Jonsson), two twentysomething Brits both reeling from recent break-ups, who have a chance encounter and connect over the course of an eventful day in South London. Boosted by a witty script, charming leads and believable chemistry throughout, the 82 minutes you spend with Yas and Dom go breezily by, a heartwarming and human connection that you can't help but root for.

'No Hard Feelings'

At the time of its release in 2023, it was something of a surprise for Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence — ye of auteur-driven dramas and box-office action franchises — to take on a big-budget romantic comedy. But "No Hard Feelings" — directed by Gene Stupnitsky ("Good Boys") from a screenplay he co-wrote with John Phillips — was a fresh and funny take on the crowd-pleasing genre, with a good deal of relatable feelings to balance out all of its raunch.

Lawrence stars as 32-year-old Maddie Barker, an Uber driver and bartender in Montauk, New York. With her car repossessed and bankruptcy in view, Maddie desperately answers the Craigslist posting of rich couple Laird and Alison Becker (Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti), who want to hire her to date their awkward and romantically inexperienced 19-year-old son Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) before he heads off to Princeton in the fall. Maddie quickly gets to work to form a relationship with the young lad, but one that ends up unexpectedly real.

"Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord" is now streaming on Disney+, and the new show's off to an impressive start. I'm a newcomer to the world of "Star Wars" animation, but in my "Maul - Shadow Lord" two-episode premiere review, I gave the show a 3.5/5 rating. Is 'Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord' season 2 happening?

If you're hoping to see more of Maul, you're in luck: "Maul - Shadow Lord" won't be a one-and-done show. Before the first season even premiered, Lucasfilm confirmed on StarWars.com that he'd be continuing his journey in "Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord" season 2.

If you're hoping for any other info about what that second season will look like, as Lucasfilm hasn't shared any story details. "Ahead of the series premiere, creator and executive producer Dave Filoni has announced the continuation of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord with confirmation of Season 2 in the works from Lucasfilm Animation. Season 1 debuts on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere on Monday," was all the announcement said.

With that in mind, we'll just have to see where "Maul - Shadow Lord" takes the former Sith Lord by tuning into the rest of season 1.

Before "Star Wars" heads back to the big screen for the first time in seven years with "The Mandalorian & Grogu" next month, Disney+ has taken us back to a galaxy far, far away for a new chapter in one of the dark side's most iconic faces: "Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord."

Full disclosure: The animated "Star Wars" shows have always been something I meant to get around to streaming, but I've just never found the time amongst keeping up with everything else I need to stream each week, so my "Star Wars" experience to date has been limited to live-action and an occasional comic or book.

That said, since the trailer looked cool, and voice actor Sam Witwer promised over on X that you didn't need to do any "Star Wars" homework to enjoy this new release, and seeing as I always thought Maul was an intriguing figure, I decided this would be the time I'd finally take the plunge.

"Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord" is set after the events of "The Clone Wars" and sees the former Sith Lord (voiced by Sam Witwer) touching down on a planet untouched by the Empire, bent on rebuilding his criminal syndicate (and searching for a new apprentice). There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan, who could well be the perfect person to help aid him in his relentless pursuit of revenge...

In addition to Sam Witwer, the "Maul - Shadow Lord" voice cast also features Richard Ayoade, Gideon Adlon, Wagner Moura, Vanessa Marshall, and Dennis Haysbert, among others.

'Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord' has me hooked already — here's why

When I finished watching the second episode, the first thought I had was simply that I must have been missing out by not checking out the animated "Star Wars" stories, as this two-episode premiere was engrossing stuff.

These first two chapters seemingly have two primary functions: set the story in motion, and dole out some eye-catching action — and the show does both well. The breezy half-hour episodes pack in a decent amount of story and action, and despite not being up to speed on "The Clone Wars," I think I've been fed enough about Maul's machinations to know for sure that I want to see what's coming next.

It helps that the show looks as nice in motion as it does, too; even if things had gotten off to a slower start, I'd still be recommending the show on the strength of its atmosphere and visuals. The team has succeeded in placing us within a seedier-feeling corner of the galaxy, one that's dramatically lit, dominated often by striking, Sith-red imagery, and boasts a brooding, droning score to match. It looks great in motion, too, especially in the bursts of blaster fire and lightsaber swinging.

Beyond the show's presentation, though, the single biggest thing I want to point out is how I've become an instant fan of Witwer's performance. Given my experience of Maul is basically limited to thinking the character was damn cool when I saw that "The Phantom Menace" brawl as a kid or being surprised to see him during that "Solo" cameo, I wasn't sure how much I'd be interested in him as a lead character — but I couldn't have been more wrong.

Witwer's Maul makes a very strong impression from the jump, matching the character's grandiose presentation with a performance that feels confident, grandiose, and menacing. That "Solo" appearance aside, this is the first time I've spent any time with his performance, and I couldn't not praise it.

All in all, then, I'd definitely recommend checking the first two episodes of "Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord" out now that the show's available to stream on Disney+. Even lacking the context of "The Clone Wars" storyline, I found it involving purely on the strength of Maul's personality alone.

"Maul - Shadow Lord" seems to be off to a strong start; whether you're at all curious about the former Sith Lord, or you're just in the mood for some more action from the galaxy far, far away, I think you might enjoy Disney+'s new "Star Wars" story.

The streets of Hell’s Kitchen have never been more dangerous in “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2. One year after its debut, Disney’s hit Marvel show returns with its second season, with the first episode now available to stream. Fans of the iconic vigilante know that “Daredevil” is no lighthearted superhero tale, leaning more into the darker side of New York and the gritty consequences of crime. It’s safe to say season 2 takes that darkness up several notches.

Picking up roughly six months after the end of season 1, Matt Murdock’s city is under the iron grip of Mayor Wilson Fisk’s anti‑vigilante regime, forcing the Man Without Fear into the shadows as he builds a resistance to reclaim his home. Much of the first season centered around Matt’s personal struggle to balance his life as a lawyer with his vigilante crusade, but this time around, the attention turns to how corruption and violence shape Hell’s Kitchen, with higher stakes, bloodier action, and the fight to reclaim the city.

“Daredevil: Born Again” season 2 leans fully into its darker, grittier edge this time, with bone-crunching fight choreography, a compelling score and deeper exploration of its complex characters. Yet, shadows of season 1 linger, and the show occasionally stumbles in familiar ways, reminding viewers that not everything is truly reborn.

Bigger, bloodier and far more confident

“Daredevil: Born Again” season 2 is certainly a step up from the previous season. That’s not to say season 1 was bad (in fact, it was still a blast), but it largely had the job of setting up future seasons, rehashing current MCU events, and finding its footing again after the eight-year gap since Netflix’s version of “Daredevil.” This groundwork actually allows season 2 to dive straight into the heart of the conflict between Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) and the city’s new rebellion.

As a quick refresher, season 1 ended with Daredevil (Charlie Cox) in a much darker place than where it began. In the finale, Fisk fully consolidates his power as Mayor of New York, imposing martial law and cracking down on vigilantes in the name of “safer streets,” while Matt Murdock and his allies are pushed into direct resistance against his regime. We also learn the truth behind Foggy Nelson’s (Elden Henson) death and see Daredevil and the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) narrowly survive a brutal confrontation with the Anti‑Vigilante Task Force.

Season 2, with its story fully set up, is able to lean into its darkness completely. That includes plenty of brutal fight sequences, with Daredevil breaking arms and smashing faces, but it also introduces a haunting tone. The visuals are darker overall, with striking pops of red and blue, and the season dwells on the lingering trauma affecting its characters: Heather Glenn’s (Margarita Levieva) threatening encounter with Muse, Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) and Matt still grappling with Foggy’s death, and the growing tension within Fisk’s administration.

The stunning visuals and music really add to this season’s brooding world, something the Netflix series did so well, and it’s great to see that visual style preserved. It also suits the characters perfectly, as almost everyone is carrying some form of trauma or fear. Season 2 goes further by connecting these storylines in a much more satisfying and cohesive way.

But to my surprise, the best part of “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2 is probably Benjamin Poindexter’s (Wilson Bethel) storyline as he fully embraces his Bullseye persona. He’s always been a fascinating character, but season 2 gives him some time to shine, including a brutal diner scene that had my jaw on the floor. Since we’ve known him from the Netflix series and seen the manipulation he endured in “Born Again” season 1 flashbacks, there’s a lot of emotional weight and tension, making his transformation truly compelling.

“Daredevil: Born Again” has definitely returned stronger this season, with a heavy focus on the psychological toll of being a vigilante. One of the most interesting threads this season is Murdock’s desperate struggle to preserve his own goodness and humanity while fighting to save Hell’s Kitchen. Every decision forces him to confront how far he’s willing to go as a hero without losing himself entirely. At the same time, Fisk grows increasingly unstable, trying to cover up his crimes while maintaining the façade of the “good mayor,” and it’s clear the cracks are widening.

Some lessons from season 1 go unlearned

While I do believe “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2 has far more impact, it unfortunately repeats some of the same mistakes from season 1. Chief among them is pacing — not much happens until the final two episodes, which allows tension to build but also slows the story down too much. As a result, there’s a noticeable lack of story progression, with events suddenly moving quickly and being wrapped up in the finale. It’s frustrating, to say the least.

But that’s not the only frustrating aspect, and this is more about my feelings toward Daredevil as a character. It’s understandable that Murdock should represent someone who wants to protect and do good rather than cause harm. Yet when he’s in the Daredevil suit, he’ll happily snap limbs and throw people into walls, but sometimes he hesitates against obviously bad threats. Going from the attempted murder of Bullseye in season 1 to a much softer vigilante now undermines the audience’s understanding of who Daredevil is willing to be when justice is on the line.

Season 2 dials up the shock factor and fleshes out character storylines, but the slow pacing undercuts the momentum. Of course, the action is thrilling and provides a much-needed adrenaline boost, but we’re here for the hero-versus-villain showdown, and some episodes drag too long before giving us what we really came for.

Verdict: ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ season 2 is more brutal and haunting

Overall, “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2 succeeds in building a tense, darker world where every choice matters in this changing landscape and the city itself feels alive in its danger. While the series struggles at times with pacing and lack of real story progression throughout its first few episodes, the season’s focus on character psychology, the harrowing tone, and strong performances (especially from Bethel) make it compelling viewing.

The show ends in a way that clearly sets up season 3, and I’m excited to see where it goes next. If done right, it could become one of the most interesting entries in the Marvel TV lineup. For fans of Daredevil and those invested in Hell’s Kitchen, “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2 offers enough tension, brutal fighting sequences, and spectacular visuals to make it worth your time.

‘Dracula’ (PVOD)

If you enjoyed Netflix’s “Frankenstein” and are craving another dark gothic romance based on a literary classic, director Luc Besson has just what you’re craving: “Dracula.” This new spin on the world’s most iconic vampire is, naturally, based on Bram Stoker’s enduring classic novel, and stars Christoph Waltz as an occultist priest with Caleb Landry Jones in the eponymous role of Count Dracula.

Taking looser inspiration from the novel, rather than being a direct adaptation, Prince Vladimir (Landry Jones) is a 15th-century royal who denounces God after the death of his beloved wife. Becoming a feared creature of the night, he is condemned to wander for centuries in the hopes of being reunited with his lost love via reincarnation. When he meets solicitor Jonathan Harker (Ewens Abid), he believes at long last he's found what he’s been searching for in the form of Harker’s wife, Mina (Zoë Bleu).

‘The Testament of Ann Lee’ (PVOD)

Mona Fastvold and Brady Corbet, the writing team behind 2024’s butt-numbing but brilliant “The Brutalist,” team up once again for “The Testament of Ann Lee.” This time it's Fastvold directing (Corbet directed “The Brutalist,” while the two share writing credits on both films), and the Norwegian filmmaker delivers an enchanting historical epic centered on, and soaring thanks to, Amanda Seyfried’s best-ever performances as the titular Ann Lee.

Lee was born in 18th century Manchester, England, and went on to found the Shaker Movement, an especially pious Christian sect. This dramatization of Lee’s life follows her from childhood until her death at 48 in Watervliet, New York. Seyfried is transformative as Lee, if you can forgive a slightly shaky Mancunian accent. I should warn any potential watchers that “The Testament of Ann Lee” is also a musical, so if you can’t stand characters breaking into song, then you might want to skip this one, but I encourage you to watch it.

‘Zootopia 2’ (Disney+)

“Zootopia 2” made an eye-watering sum of money at the global box office, grossing more than $1.8 billion in total. Nevertheless, its release on Disney+ has come around quickly, and this animated sequel will no doubt be one of the most-watched movies on the House of Mouse’s streaming service in 2026. I suspect anybody with young viewers in this household is going to have “Zootopia 2” playing on repeat for the next several months.

Taking viewers back to a world like our own, but inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, “Zootopia 2” reunites viewers with odd-couple partners Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). Fresh off saving the city, they’re thrown into a new mystery when a sinister snake (Ke Huy Quan) arrives on the scene with a dastardly plan that could throw all of Zootopia into chaos. This new mission will test the pair’s bond like never before, and could see them go their separate ways for good.

‘Not Without Hope’ (Paramount Plus)

Paramount+’s new survival thriller sounds pretty intense, but it only gets more so when you consider that it’s based on a true story. It centers on a devastating boat accident that ultimately took the lives of two NFL players, Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith. It comes from director Joe Carnahan and stars Zachary Levi and Josh Duhamel. If you want a movie that will have you gripped from start to finish, “Not Without Hope” looks like a clear first choice.

In 2009, four friends head off on a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico. What was supposed to be an enjoyable day between friends turns into a nightmare when the boat capsizes. The four men are left stranded in open waters. As the US Coast Guard mounts a rescue mission, they face unimaginable hardship and obstacles, including towering waves, sharks, dehydration and hypothermia. It’s a race against time to find the men before it’s too late.

‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ (Starz)

The third entry in the “Now You See Me” franchise is the textbook definition of guilty pleasure watching. Sure, I could focus on the many clear issues, from the illogical moments to Rosamund Pike’s less-than-stellar South African accent, but I can’t help but love this franchise. It combines sleight-of-hand hijinks with an exciting heist setup. Plus, it brings back the entire original cast (sans Mark Ruffalo), and pairs them up with some fresh faces, too.

Set a decade after “Now You See Me 2,” the Four Horsemen, a group of globe-trotting magicians whose bag of tricks are basically superpowers, haven’t been seen for 10 years. When they suddenly remerge and team up with a new generation of illusionists, a dangerous plan is concocted to steal the world’s largest diamond from a South African dealer (Rosamund Pike), whose jewelry operation is a front for an international crime syndicate.

While Disney and Pixar landed a sci-fi box office bomb last year — I might have loved "Elio," but it definitely didn't pull in the crowds — Daniel Chong's zany caper "Hoppers" has fared better. If you didn't catch it, the movie sees 19-year-old Mabel (Piper Curda) making use of some newfangled tech to transplant her consciousness into the body of a robotic beaver so she can uncover the mysteries of the animal kingdom.

In our "Hoppers" review, Malcolm McMillan called it "delightful" and "basically 'Avatar' but better," and it's drawn plenty of praise elsewhere, too. At the time of writing, this hilarious adventure holds 94% approval ratings from critics and moviegoers alike on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's still one of the highest-grossing movies at the box office (per BoxOfficeMojo).

If you missed it in theaters, you're in luck: you won't have to wait much longer to watch "Hoppers" at home, as the film's just landed a premium video-on-demand (PVOD) release date! You can find the newly-announced date (plus my guess at the potential Disney+ release) below.

When is 'Hoppers' coming to streaming?

"Hoppers" hit the big screen on Friday, March 6, but as of our latest update, it's coming to streaming services in just a few days: "Hoppers" will be available to stream on Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home from Tuesday, April 28.

That just so happens to line up exactly with my original guess, which assumed we'd probably wait around 60 days for the film's digital release (which is the pattern past Disney releases have followed).

If you'd prefer to watch "Hoppers" on Disney+, you'll have to wait a little longer. Right now, I'd wager you'll be able to stream "Hoppers" on Disney+ at some point in June 2026.

Again, that guess is based on the wait for previous Disney releases. "Zootopia 2" hits Disney+ this week (March 11), 106 days after it first hit theaters. Likewise, "Tron: Ares" came to the platform 94 days after its theatrical debut, and "Freakier Friday" similarly arrived 97 days after its original release date.

So, if we assume "Hoppers" will also take around 95-105 days to come to the platform and acknowledge that new movies typically come to Disney+ on Wednesdays, we're looking at a mid-to-late June 2026 streaming release for "Hoppers," with June 10 or 17 seeming likely release dates.

An official "Hoppers" Disney+ release date has not been confirmed, but I'll be sure to update this section as soon as one arrives. Oh, and if you're looking to buy the movie yourself, "Hoppers" will be released physically on DVD, 4K and Blu-ray on June 2.

Prime Video's latest original movie had me wondering why, with all that ocean open for adventures, pirate movies have mostly fallen out of favor. "The Bluff," if you're yet to stream it, sees an ex-pirate Ercell (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) forced to return to her old ways when her vengeful former captain (Karl Urban) returns and shatters her peaceful life.

Not only is it a solid action thriller in its own right, but "The Bluff" also stands as proof that there must be a demand for more pirate adventures to head back to our screens. After all, if there wasn't, there's no way "The Bluff" would have managed to cling to the No. 1 spot in Prime Video's streaming charts, right?

Well, while Hollywood is seemingly distracted by other genres, I've put together a short list of five more pirate movies that you may want to watch (and listed where you can find them) below, whether you're in the mood for more thrills or some more family-friendly options.

'Pirates of the Caribbean'

Let's just get the most obvious suggestion I could make out of the way first, shall we? Yes, if you love pirate movies, you're almost certainly going to love "Pirates of the Caribbean."

Though Disney's swashbuckling saga diminishes in quality over the course of its five-movie run, this is still an epic series of voyages movies fronted by a cast of enduring faves like Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). It's quintessential viewing for any pirate-loving moviegoer, and the first couple of films especially are still brilliant adventure movies that I'd be happy to recommend.

'Hook' (1991)

Spielberg's spin on the classic "Peter Pan" story is not the only family adventure on the list, but Steven Spielberg's "Hook" feels like it's the one that needs the most defending. It has flaws, sure, but I can't see how this can only have a 37% on Rotten Tomatoes.

If it wasn't part of your childhood, "Hook" introduces us to an all-grown-up Peter Pan (now an absent father to two kids who has forgotten his old adventures) who is lured back into adventure when his past comes calling. When his former foe, Captain James Hook (a swaggering turn from Dustin Hoffman), steals his children away, Peter heads back to Neverland and, with the help of Tinkerbell and the rest of the Lost Boys, sets out to rescue his kids by confronting Hook all over again.

'The Pirates! Band of Misfits' (2012)

As a lover of all things from Aardman Animation, I couldn't not mention "The Pirates! Band of Misfits," which is another dose of delightfully silly fun from the "Wallace & Gromit" studio.

"The Pirates!" is a stop-motion romp that revolves around a bearded, bumbling Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) who leads a crew of hapless pirates and has his eye on getting one over on his rivals by plundering the most loot and bagging the Pirate of the Year Award for himself. That mission takes him and his shipmates on a madcap quest across the seas that sees them crossing paths with Charles Darwin (David Tennant) and noted pirate-hater Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton). If you're after piracy fit for the whole family, it's worth seeking out.

'Treasure Planet' (2002)

What's cooler than pirates? Space pirates. That seems to be the idea behind John Musker and Ron Clements' thrilling family sci-fi adventure, "Treasure Planet." It was a box office bomb during its theatrical run, but it has remained one of my favorite Disney movies ever since I first laid eyes on it as a kid, and it deserves more love.

This must-see caper transplants R.L. Stevenson's iconic "Treasure Island" story to the far future, and instead revolves around Jim Hawkings (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a miscreant inn worker. After a chance meeting sees him left with a map that leads to Treasure Planet, he speeds off on a dangerous intergalactic voyage aboard Captain Amelia's (Emma Thompson) galaxy-hopping vessel, alongside his pal Dr. Doppler (David Hyde Pierce), cyborg chef Long John Silver (Brian Murray Bell), and their crew.

'Captain Phillips' (2013)

A contemporary thriller might not be what you're first thinking of when searching for pirate movies, but Paul Greengrass’ 2013 action thriller is based on a true story wherein the Maersk Alabama merchant vessel was seized by a crew of Somali pirates, and I think that’s grounds to include it here, especially as this nerve-shredding thriller is so easy to recommend.

The film focuses on the Maersk Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), and the pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi). It's arguably the most intense watch on this list and deserved all the praise it earned from filmgoers and movie critics at release.

Hosted by Alex Cooper, it'll feature Cyrus looking back on creating Hannah, navigating the double-life premise that became a pop culture phenomenon, and why the character (and music) still resonates with fans two decades later. 'Magicampers'

Explorers Darly (Cassie Glow) and Loomis (Benjamin Mackey) spend their days at a one-of-a-kind camp for magical creatures on a fun and fantastical island. Well, having had the chance to check out the first four episodes of the series in advance of the show's two-episode premiere on ABC tonight (Feb. 25) and forthcoming Hulu and Disney+ streaming release tomorrow, I am pleased to report that my fears have been assuaged. This is a solid follow-up that leans on what made the original show enjoyable.

"Scrubs" is back ... again! Almost 16 years after the series originally came to its end with the divisive med school-set ninth season, Disney has brought us back to Sacred Heart Hospital for the long-rumored "Scrubs" reboot — and it was worth the wait.

I've been a fan of the medical sitcom for as long as I can remember and have crammed in more than one complete rewatch over the years, but I still went into the new revival season kinda skeptical. Could you really return to this show all these years later and have "Scrubs" still work just like it used to?

I'm sure a return to this style of sitcom might not work for everyone, and similarly, if you aren't already a fan of "Scrubs," this fairly safe revival sure doesn't feel like it's going to change your mind — well, unless the back half of the season veers in a totally different direction, at least.

That said, if you are a fan of "Scrubs," I feel confident when I say that you're probably going to enjoy the new show. It quickly reintroduces us to some of the sitcom's core members — J.D. (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliott (Sarah Chalke) primarily, with Carla (Judy Reyes) present to a lesser degree, and other stars featuring more as guests — as they lead their lives here and now, and while they've grown up and the show's grown a little more mature alongside the cast, it's otherwise still leaning into the formula that made the original show work.

There are still fresh additions to the cast, though only one — Sibby, who looks after staff wellness and is played by "SNL" alum Vanessa Bayer — really feels like they've had enough time to make their mark; the focus is squarely on the returning players, and it is both banking on and thriving thanks to the cast's lasting chemistry. But as Bayer's character makes for an entertaining addition to the staff, I'm keen to see the show's younger staff members come into their own, too.

The writing's reasonably sharp, the episodes are short and snappy, and the show's still got the signature fantasy sequences and occasional somber moment to interrupt the silliness. The story has progressed, but otherwise, it feels and sounds like "Scrubs," because it is more "Scrubs." But it's a formula that still works, and that makes it very easy to recommend to longtime fans.

This is simple, nostalgic comfort TV that leans into the series' identity — and as a "Scrubs" fan, I think that this new installment feels like exactly what I wanted it to be. It's not really trying anything too fresh, but after these four episodes, I'm definitely keen to tune in for the rest of the series' run. If you loved the original show, I'd encourage you to give it a shot too.

With "The Mandalorian and Grogu" movie heading to theaters on May 22, 2026, a whole new wave of Star Wars merch is about to land, and the first reveals are already here. Jada Toys is helping kick things off, and I can exclusively share that the collectibles company has created two remote-controlled walkers that feel just as ready for display as they are for traversing your floor.

This two-part R/C release features the Star Wars AT-AT Walker and Star Wars Imperial Remnant AT-RT Walker. The four-legged AT-AT is one of the most recognizable images from "The Empire Strikes Back" (the best installment of the Star Wars original trilogy, I’ll die on that hill) while the two-legged AT-RT famously supported the Republic’s efforts in "The Clone Wars" before transitioning to the Empire’s artillery.

Although I haven’t yet had the chance to see these walkers up-close for myself, the renders suggest both are highly detailed and likely to reflect the versions we’ll see in the Disney+ series-turned-film. The AT-RT even comes with a 6-inch figurine of The Mandalorian and companion Grogu to scale taking a ride.

Since these are R/C toys, they have lights and sound effects to encourage interactive play. Considering the AT-AT and AT-RT are $69.99 and $49.99 respectively, it’s not out of the question to collect a couple and act out epic scenes from the films. I mean, I totally want to recreate the battle on Hoth — the one where Luke uses his harpoons to trip up the lethal AT-AT (which then inspired a certain Spider-Man stunt in "Captain America: Civil War," but I digress.)

I also like how, with each of these Jada Toys’ walkers, a compartment to store the remote has been built into the body. Not only can this conceal the remote for display purposes, but it seems like it should mitigate issues with remotes gone missing. This is coming from someone who lost the remote to the BB unit she built at the Galaxy’s Edge Droid Depot in Disney World three years ago and has yet to recover its coordinates.

As far as upcoming licensed "The Mandalorian and Grogu" products go, I hope more launches manage to strike the same balance of respecting the established Star Wars brand and embracing its expansion into fresh stories as these walkers do.

2025 was a good year to be a "Predator" movie fan, as franchise shepherd Dan Trachtenberg gave us not one but two new movies starring everyone's favorite extra-terrestrial hunters. First up was Hulu's excellent animated feature, "Predator: Killer of Killers," and then in November, we were treated to "Predator: Badlands," a satisfying new spin on the franchise that threw us in with a young Predator outcast on a mission to take on some seriously deadly prey.

If you missed "Predator: Badlands" in theaters, I've got good news: As of today (Feb. 12), the latest "Predator" movie is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+. And, while it isn't exactly in keeping with the forthcoming Valentine's festivities, this is the movie I think I'd recommend streaming this week, above all else.

It might not be quite as thrilling as "Prey," but "Predator: Badlands" is still a solid action thriller that you shouldn't miss out on — you can find out why below.

What is 'Predator: Badlands' about?

Dan Trachtenberg's "Predator: Badlands" takes us into the future and over to the planet of Yautja Prime, where we're introduced to a diminutive, determined Predator named Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi). In an effort to prove his worthiness to his father and clan leader, Dek heads to Genna (a "death planet") in order to hunt the Kalisk, a deadly apex predator. After crash-landing on the planet, Dek recommits to his quest, and while he continues his hunt, he encounters (and reluctantly allies with) a damaged Weyland-Yutani android called Thia (Elle Fanning).

In addition to Schuster-Koloamatangi and Fanning, "Predator: Badlands" also features Reuben de Jong, Mike Homik, Rohinal Narayan, Cameron Brown, and Alison Wright.

Should you stream 'Predator: Badlands?'

If you're looking to liven up your watchlist this week, "Predator: Badlands" is the movie to watch. This new chapter is a fast-moving, surprisingly funny, and exciting sci-fi thriller/unlikely buddy movie that, to me, proves that the "Predator" franchise couldn't be in much safer hands.

While I can't say I have ever really cared to know the backstory or more about the Yautja in the past, I think the decision to make a Predator protagonist is a great one. It offers the filmmakers the chance to add new layers to the fearsome foes, adding a welcome dash of humor. Dek's not just a hunter, he's also an underdog that you'll want to root for. He's also a very funny lead, especially once he's paired up with Thia (a brilliant turn from Elle Fanning).

I get why some were disappointed by the PG-13 rating, but I can't see how anyone would be disappointed by all the action that "Badlands" does contain. Sure, Dek might not be slicing and dicing human foes, but there's still plenty of carnage to enjoy here. Viewers who are dazzled by impressive visuals will be well-served, too.

While I don't think the thrills here outmatch the raw intensity of "Prey," "Predator: Badlands" deserves praise for its blockbuster, B-movie-style thrills, and it leaves us in a solid place for the next chapter, too.

I'm glad to see "Predator: Badlands" has plenty of fans: it's sitting at 86% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with an even higher fan rating (95% on the Popcornmeter), proving it resonated with fellow moviegoers, too.

The movie earned a perfect 4/4 score from Matt Zoller Seitz in his review for RogerEbert.com, who hailed it as "an exceptional sci-fi action thriller with memorable characters, beautiful and terrifying animals (and plants), a structurally airtight script, and lead performances that deserve to be included in discussions of the year’s best".

Empire's Nick De Semlyen offered a 4-star verdict, calling it "an amped-up rock-gig of a movie and the most fun Predator since the original." Reviewing for Time Out, Olly Richards also issued a 4-star score, praising its action setpieces and the way it reinvigorates the franchise all over again, writing: "Trachtenberg is making the franchise richer with every instalment."

Basically, if you're looking for a new, adrenaline-pumping action movie to watch at home this week, you're going to want to stream "Predator: Badlands" on Hulu (or Disney+). The original incarnation of "The Muppet Show" might predate me by several decades, but Disney+'s new "Muppet Show" special event felt practically purpose-built for me. And, having had the pleasure of watching this half-hour special in advance of its release on ABC and Disney's streaming service on Feb. 4, I have one small plea to make to the House of Mouse: greenlight a new season of this chaos, now.

'The Muppet Show'

If you're not up on all things Muppet, the original variety series ran from 1976 through 1981 and saw countless celebrity guests like Elton John, Diana Ross and Johnny Cash sharing the stage with Kermit, Miss Piggy and more as the crew hosted their own variety performances, and now they've done it all again ahead of the series' upcoming 50th anniversary.

I knew going in that I was primed to laugh along with Kermit and co., but unless you're a real cynic (or you simply can't stand puppets), I defy you not to at the very least crack the odd smile at some point during "The Muppet Show." Simply put, this is a half-hour's worth of sketch comedy, songs, and all-out chaos — and I loved it.

I know that I'm susceptible to Muppet silliness, but I just found this to be a blast. From a rendition of one of Carpenter's popular hits supported by a clutch of sassy hens to Miss Piggy's machinations to be the star that she is, to the cutting put-downs from Statler and Waldorf, and a big swamp-set duet, the special frequently had me laughing, and that's all I really needed it to do.

I don't have much more to say other than that; these Muppets feel very much like the characters I've been a fan of since I was a kid, and Disney+'s new "The Muppet Show" was a treat. It's a dose of light entertainment, and it did its job, and did it well.

This special proves that there's plenty of fun still to be had with "The Muppet Show" with the format, and I really hope it's a hit with subscribers of all ages. Early on, Kermit jokes that this could be the start of another comeback, "depending on how tonight goes," and I really hope that rings true. So, if you've got a half hour to spare, and you're looking for a quick, comedic blast of fun, this is it.
