When I was growing up, I never suffered from seasonal allergies despite constantly playing outside on fields of freshly cut grass and getting as close to the flower beds as I possibly could. But as I've become older, I've noticed that as soon as April rolls around and the flowers and trees in my area start pollinating, I get a serious case of the sniffles.

I always thought I was the chosen one who would never suffer with allergies, but oh, how wrong I was. Over the years, I've moved to different cities, and this can have an influence on my reaction due to the different environments, meaning that I've become more sensitive to things like dust and pollen.

So this year I've invested in the Shark Never Change air purifier, and it's completely altered my home. I've been using it for a month, and here are three of the biggest changes I noticed.

Reduced dust

The first thing I noticed within a week of having the air purifier was the reduced dust floating around my home. My house has never been dusty by any means, but it's only natural to spot dust floating around when sunlight beams in through the windows.

I hardly notice any dust now, and on my weekly clean, there's way less dust settling on surfaces. This has been a game-changer for me since, as well as dealing with seasonal allergies, my skin is extremely sensitive to triggers like disturbed dust.

The filters on the side of the air purifier need to be cleaned intermittently, and the more dust there is, the more often you'll need to do this. I find this task very simple: I pop out the side filters, wipe them down with a damp (not wet) cloth, let them dry, and then put them back in. Pollen detection

Whether you're someone who suffers the most when the tree pollen hits you as soon as you step outside, or whether it's the lingering effects it has in your house when it gets on your rugs that affects you the most, the air purifier is one of the easiest ways to combat the effects.

Peace lilies are popular for their stunning white blooms and lush leaves, but it turns out this plant can do much more than brighten any room. According to experts, this plant is considered a great natural air purifier, known for removing common indoor pollutants.

“Peace lilies are one of the best,” states Steve Corcoran, CEO, Lawn Love. “It’s not actually the flowers that work to purify the air — it’s the leaves. Their leaves can remove pollutants like formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, ammonia, and trichloroethylene from the air more effectively than most other plants.

“They do this by absorbing those pollutants through their surfaces, and then the pollutants are broken down by microbes in the roots of the plant.”

Better still, the peace lily can also reduce mold spores that grow in the home, which can also cause problematic health issues. This makes a great alternative to use alongside one of the best dehumidifiers to reduce moisture levels.

Typically, the best plants for improving air quality are healthy plants with lush foliage and robust root systems. This includes plants like the Boston Fern that can absorb airborne toxins through its leaves and roots — releasing moisture and oxygen. Or the low-maintenance, Snake Plant (Sansevieria), which experts claim can remove four major toxins), and a rubber plant.

"Rubber plants are easy to grow and are one of the best for removing toxins from the air," adds Bryan Wu, plant expert at Wuhoo Tropicals. Where can I place my peace lily in the home?

So, where is the best place to put a peace lily in the home for maximum benefits? And does it really make a huge difference? “It’s usually best to have air purifying plants in areas of the home where breathing healthily and easily are most important to you (like your bedroom, since that’s where you sleep),” advises Corcoran.

“It should also be noted though that even the best plants for air-purifying aren’t as effective as actual air purifiers.”

In addition, peace lilies are relatively low-maintenance, thriving in various light conditions, including very little light. All they’ll require is adequate indirect daylight and watering every few days. Which works great for me, as I often forget to water my plants!

“If you want to get the maximum benefits from your peace lily, make sure to place it in a spot that receives bright, indirect sunlight and keep the temperature anywhere between 55–75°F,” advises Angelika Zaber, gardening expert at Online Turf.

“At the same time, keep your peace lily away from heat sources and draughty locations as it does not respond well to drastic temperature fluctuations.”

Another thing to note is that the peace lily is known to be toxic to both pets and humans when ingested. So keep this in mind if you have young children or pets, and make sure the plant is kept out of their reach.

I’ve never used an air purifier before, but this spring I’m getting ahead of the game before the allergy season starts. Although I don’t suffer from springtime allergies myself, one of my sons sneezes as soon as the pollen count rises.

It can be a trying time for anyone with springtime allergies. Having waited for the sunnier days and warmer weather to arrive, instead of enjoying the change in season, allergy sufferers are left with itchy eyes and a runny nose.

And these allergies can affect you whether you are inside or out, as the natural tendency in spring is to open your windows to let in the fresh air. What’s more, if you suffer from springtime allergies, you’re also more likely to be affected by other offenders, such as dust mites, pet dander and mold spores.

An air purifier helps remove pollen and other allergens from the air in your home, providing relief not just from sneezing but from other symptoms associated with springtime allergies. So apart from the seasonal offenders, an air purifier will also filter out other nasties.

Having never chosen an air purifier before, I don’t want to make a mistake when buying an air purifier, so I’ve put together a checklist to outline what to consider.

1. Does it have a HEPA filter?

If you want to neutralize more than just food odors with an air purifier, look for one with a HEPA filter, which removes allergens. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an HEPA filter can remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and other airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns.

So, although I recently reported on IKEA’s air purifier that’s cleverly incorporated into a table, hiding the tech out of sight, it doesn’t include a HEPA filter that allergy sufferers will need.

2. Size up the CADR delivery rate

Apart from looking for an air purifier with an HEPA filter, I’ll be checking the CADR rating. This indicates the speed at which the air is completely filtered in an hour — the higher the rating, the faster the removal.

According to The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, each air purifier receives a separate CADR score for pollen, dust, and smoke, indicating how efficient the unit is at cleaning a particular pollutant from the air. So, be sure to check out these ratings before you buy.

You'll also want to combine this rating with your room size to ensure you’re buying an air purifier that fits your needs. Harvard has a handy portable air cleaner sizing tool that lets you enter the CADR to determine the maximum room size the air purifier can handle. Alternatively, you can enter the room dimensions to calculate an ideal CDR rating.

My aim is to select an air purifier with a CADR that equals at least two-thirds of the room’s area. For instance, a room that measures 400 sq. ft. will need an air purifier with a minimum CADR of 260, assuming a ceiling height of 8 feet. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency has more guidelines on finding the right air purifier for your home.

3. Is it noisy?

One of the major considerations for me is the noise output. My son will be sleeping in the room when the air purifier is switched on, and although he is a heavy sleeper, I don’t want the noise to disturb his beauty sleep.

This isn’t something you can check before you buy, unless you go into a store, so knowing what level of noise is acceptable for sleep will help you make the right decision. According to Alen, most air purifiers operate around 50 to 60 decibels on the highest setting, which is equivalent to conversational speech in a quiet room. But if you’re running an air purifier in a bedroom at night, you might want one that runs at a lower setting, around 30-40 decibels or below.

4. Can I move it?

I already have a dehumidifier to reduce humidity in another room, and it can get heavy when it’s full of water. Although I won’t have this extra weight to consider with an air purifier, I do want to take into account how easy it is to move and how much space it will take up.

If I were looking for a compact air purifier, I could choose the Shark Never Change Compact Pro, $119 at Amazon, as it only weighs 4.4 pounds, or I could pick the slightly heavier BLUEAIR Air Purifier for a small room that’s $111 at Amazon, and weighs 7.5 pounds.

5. Visual appeal

Apart from finding an air purifier that cleans the air efficiently, I want to buy an appliance that looks smart and won’t appear out of place in a bedroom, as, aside from allergy season, I plan to use it year-round.

There are two air purifiers that we’ve tested at Tom’s Guide that hit the mark. Mila’s air purifier, $279 at Amazon, has a stylish aesthetic, though it was a bit noisy during testing. If you're after one of the best air purifiers to deal with pet hair and concerned about noise pollution, you're in luck. The Oneisall Air Purifier does both. In fact, I forgot all about it while it was running all day long in my living room, as it’s super quiet and rather compact for the amount of air purification it boasts.

And for the luddite in me, the lack of an app to control the unit actually became a benefit: I didn’t have to think about it at all to get the benefits out of it. But for those who like to control their devices from their phone to turn them on or off, adjust them, or otherwise get tons of data in one convenient place, the lack of an app might be a dealbreaker.

Note that it’s advertised as a pet hair specialist. And while it did suck up some of my dog’s hair (who was shedding like mad during testing), it wasn’t as much of a pet-hair-pro as I was expecting.

Oneisall’s Air Purifier review: Design

Despite its relatively small size, the Oneisall Air Purifier packs a lot of punch, according to the spec sheet. The 360-degree dual intake captures 80% more pet hair than a single intake, according to Oneisall. There’s a filter on the front of the unit and another out back to capture junk from both sides.

The H13 HEPA and dual carbon filters remove odors and tiny particles. Oneisall says the unit will capture 99.97% of micro particles and 99.99% of air pollutants, in spaces up to 1,410 square feet, giving it an impressive CADR of 320m3/h (188CFM).

The pre-filters are washable too, so you should get plenty of life out of them. Plus the odor removal comes courtesy of activated carbon, which Oneisall says will freshen your air twice as fast as its competition.

Noise-wise, the air purifier is very quiet on its lowest setting. Oneisall says it operates at just 25 decibels. The noise level will increase, of course, as the fan level goes up. Speaking of which, the unit auto-adjusts fan speed based on information received through its smart sensors.

The LCD screen is positioned at the front top of the unit. It’s color-coded to give you a sense of your current air quality at a quick glance. Green is good; red is bad. You can manually adjust the air flow with the touch screen, but the unit will also auto-adjust based on air quality. You can also lock the screen to prevent accidental adjustments.

In the box, you’ll find the main unit, 2 HEPA filters, power cable, and a cleaning brush. This can be used to dislodge pet hair that accumulates on the filters.

Notably, there is no app to use in conjunction with the Oneisall Air Purifier. So any adjustments to the unit would have to be made at the control panel on the unit itself.

Oneisall’s Air Purifier review: Performance

I plugged in the Oneisall Air Purifier and walked away. That’s it. Super simple, no setup to speak of and no app to download. Honestly, it was refreshing as it seems every device these days requires your email registration in a companion app that may or may not actually be useful. I didn’t miss that part of the setup process, and definitely didn’t miss fiddling with an app.

But if you’re data-obsessed, you’re not going to get much from this unit. The color-coded screen will let you know whether your air quality is good or bad, but you won’t get any other data if you’re the sort who likes to track that sort of thing. I did miss having that information at my fingertips at first, but the longer the unit ran, the more I wondered whether having that granular data really benefitted me in any way. It’s a decision you’ll have to make for yourself. If you’re after a set-it-and-forget-it unit, look no further. Data nerds, look elsewhere.

.One thing I noticed as I played with the various fan settings was the slight difficulty of using the touchscreen buttons. I would press the lighted area that indicates the fan setting, but the setting would not change. It sometimes took two or three presses to get the screen to respond. This didn’t happen all the time, but enough times to be annoying. I had the most success tapping the upper right corner on the top part of the touch screen to get the display to show, and to make the buttons easier to activate. Still, It would be helpful if the touchscreen was more sensitive to touch.

Like many pets, my dog has his favorite spot to spend much of his day. It’s a chair in the corner of our living room that’s almost always covered completely in dog fur and comes with a warning to guests not to sit there for fear of dog sighs and fur coverage. So I positioned the unit next to my pup’s chair and let it run for two weeks.

I was expecting the filters to get pretty furry after constant use for two weeks. But that wasn’t really the case. While there was evidence of a fair bit of dust, there wasn’t much fur at all on the filters or pre-filter. That was surprising, given how much fur coated doggo’s chair. He comes and goes a lot, walking right past the unit, and he often shakes himself as dogs do. So the lack of fur on the filter was a bit of a head scratcher given Oneisall’s claims.

That said, the pre-filters and the filters themselves did seem to catch quite a lot of dust. And a lot of what air purifiers like these are designed to suck up aren’t necessarily visible to the naked eye.

To check in with hard numbers, I used an Alexa air quality monitor. The Oneisall PM2.5 reading on the front of the unit showed 005, which I assume means .005 pmµ/g3. Alexa registered a slightly lower reading than that, at 0035. Again, this seems to be within a reasonable margin of error.

Oneisall’s Air Purifier review: Noise

It’s also super quiet. I forgot it was running most of the time and even found myself checking early on to make sure it was actually on. Granted, the air quality light read green most of the time.

My decibel reading read slightly higher than the advertised level; I got 30 decibels. I’d say this is within a reasonable margin of the advertised level. But even when the air flow fan kicked up a notch, the noise level was a quiet 42 decibels.

On the highest setting, my decibel meter picked up 58 decibels. That’s still much quieter than other units I’ve tested, which creep into the mid-60-s and low 70s at high settings

Oneisall’s Air Purifier review: Accessories

The only accessory that comes with the Oneisall Air Purifier is the cleaning brush. It’s used to dislodge bigger detritus and pet fur from the pre-filters and filters. It’s easy to use and also fairly easy to lose. I wish it had a little mount on the unit itself so I had a place to stow it when not in use.

Otherwise, there aren’t many other accessories to speak of, except for replacement parts. You can buy refill filters on the Oneisall website.

Oneisall’s Air Purifier review: Competition

The air purifier market is very, very crowded. There are tons of options, each one promising varying levels of specialization. Many of Oneisall’s most direct competitors are larger, more expensive, and definitely louder. But some are also more versatile and offer data that the Oneisall can’t.

For instance, the Mila Air Purifier, which you can customize with several different filters, each intended for a different use. It comes with a companion app too, so you get more control and information. But it’s also bigger, louder, and more expensive than the Oneisall, so you'll have to consider what's important for your needs.

Oneisall’s Air Purifier review: Verdict

The Oneisall has a lot going for it: quiet operation and super simple with its app-free use. I was disappointed to see that the filters weren’t more clogged with dog fur after my testing, but that’s not exactly an indication that the Oneisall Air Purifier isn’t doing its job.

If you love data however, you’ll miss the app. Similarly, if you prefer to operate the unit from afar or integrate it into your smart home ecosystem, the Oneisall probably isn’t for you. However, if you just want to 'set-it-and-forget it', the Oneisall Air Purifier is ideal for anyone looking for a simple unit to purify your air without having to think about it.

I pride myself on having a great-smelling home. I have a few smaller rugs, like a fluffy one in my entryway, to make my hardwood floor feel warm on a winter's day. I find that the simple act of taking this rug out to my yard and giving it a shake does wonders for this tight space.

This way, when I do flip my reed diffuser, it's not battling with any odors coming from my rug. And since it's furry, this rug does tend to harbor debris, crumbs, hair, and other unpleasant things.

4. Flip one of your reed diffusers

Now, I wouldn't suggest going around your home and flipping all of your reed diffusers, or you'll just be left with several different scents, all battling with each other to be the most powerful.

Instead, choose your favorite (and the most festive) and flip those reeds just before they walk through the door. Even better, if you can, then move this diffuser to the center of the space you'll be spending the most time in.

5. Turn up your air purifier

Whether you suffer from allergies or simply want cleaner indoor air, investing in one of the best air purifiers can make all the difference. And if you use it on a regular basis, you probably want to get the most out of its filters.

However, replacing filters can be costly, depending on the model you have. Certain models are fitted with filters that can last for years, but are very expensive to replace, while cheaper options may need replacing more often.

But, is it ok to clean and reuse your air purifier filters? While this might seem like a cost-effective solution, is this a bad idea for the performance of your air purifier?

Fortunately, we’ve got the industry experts at hand to determine whether it’s fine to clean or replace your air purifier filters.

Can you clean and reuse your air purifier filters?

So, is it ever a good idea to clean and reuse your filter instead of replacing it? While the general consensus is a firm no, cleaning will also depend on the type of filter you have, and the manufacturer guidance.

Typically, HEPA filters, which are the most common, are not designed to be cleaned and reused. "The vast majority of air purifier filters, especially those using HEPA technology, are designed for one-time use and cannot be effectively cleaned and reused,” advises Edwin Cheung, the Founder of Rabbit Air.

"Unless a manufacturer explicitly specifies their product uses cleanable filters (which is rare among high-efficiency models), you should assume the filter is disposable. HEPA filters (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) work by trapping microscopic particles deep within a dense web of fibers. This structure is not designed to release the particles.

“Attempting to wash or vacuum a HEPA filter typically damages the fine material, creating large pores that allow harmful particles to pass right through, severely compromising the purifier's function." So always check first the type of filter and rule out HEPA types.

So what is the case for non-HEPA filters? Are those fine to wash and reuse? “Washable filters are typically made up from more durable mesh or foam so they can be rinsed under running water and dried fully before reinstalling them,” says Scott Hardesty, CEO of Caccia Home Services. “It's important to avoid using harsh chemicals though as they can damage the materials.

“It's also important to remember that every time you clean a filter, it's likely reducing its efficiency. You might think you are extending its lifespan and saving money but it is something you need to consider. A worn or poorly cleaned filter won’t catch fine particles like pollen or smoke for example, so you end up recycling dirty air through your home.”

Before doing so however, be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions and follow them exactly.

How do you clean a pre-filter?

In some cases, there are pre-filters that can be vacuum cleaned and washed, as long as you follow the guidance. Essentially, a pre-filter is the first line of defense in an air purifier's purification system and can be cleaned.

“A lot of pre-filters are reusable, they trap the larger particles like hair and dust,” advises Martyn Fowler, Founder of Elite Renewables. “A quick vacuum and rinse every couple of weeks helps keep the unit running efficiently. The important thing is to avoid damaging the filter during the process.”

So what is the best method of cleaning a pre-filter? “You'll need to use cold water with no soap or detergents — and no scrubbing the filter,” advises Fowler. “Once it's been rinsed, make sure it’s absolutely bone dry before you put it back in the unit. If there’s any moisture left, you’re just inviting mold into your air purifier, which defeats the purpose entirely.

“HEPA filters do the heavy lifting in your air purifier and they are generally not designed to be cleaned and reused. They trap the fine particles like pollen and spores. If you wash them or try and blow them out with compressed air you’ll damage the fibres and make the filter useless. Once a HEPA filter’s saturated, it’s time to replace it.” Note, it’s important to remember to always unplug the unit before cleaning and never use harsh chemicals or submerge any parts in water.

Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Compact Pro review: Design

This air purifier is small in size, at just under 12 inches high, meaning it's perfect for smaller spaces where you don't want it to become the focus point of a room. Handily enough for me, I reviewed the white one. With lots of my home decor being the same color, it didn't stick out at all.

This air purifier, unlike other Shark models, comes in a range of colorways. You can choose from dove, white, honeydew (which is a light green), quartz (which is light pink), and lilac. So, if you do want yours to pop, you can opt for something fancy!

There is the option to use it with an Anti-Odor Technology cartridge, which I did. This is very easy to fit, although not necessary to use the air purifier—it emits a subtle fresh scent while the air purifier is in use.

Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Compact Pro review: Set-up and use

The Shark NeverChange arrived inside a small, lightweight box. It was wrapped in fully eco-conscious packaging with minimal plastic wrap in sight—only around the filter, which you need to remove before using.

And on the box, it's made extremely clear that this wrap needs to be removed as it can be a hazard, and it's to prevent dust from reaching into the filter before you've even started using your purifier.

The setup itself was a total breeze. You really only need to find a place for it to sit and then plug it in. It requires 3 inches (or 8cm) of space around it, from walls and objects. Its cord is nice and long at 5 feet, too.

There's no fancy app that connects with this air purifier—everything you need to know is displayed on its screen, and it has 4 self-explanatory buttons that you touch to activate.

The one thing I immediately loved about this air purifier was how lightweight it was. It weighs only 2kg/4.41 lbs and is so easy to carry up and down stairs or from one room to another. There isn't a handle designed into it, but it really doesn't need one.

Another thing I liked is that you can turn its display lights off while you sleep. You can also turn off the beeping noise it makes when cycling through settings by holding the Air Info button and the Fan Speed button at the same time, for two seconds.

It also has a child lock, but this isn't made obvious unless you read the instructions—press and hold the Brightness button and the Fan Speed Button for two seconds

Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Compact Pro review: Performance

There isn't a fancy app for this Shark air purifier; instead, everything you need to know is displayed on its large, circular screen. As soon as the air purifier is switched on, its screen will display the air quality rating in percentage, out of 100%. This correlates to

• Blue - Good (between 85%-100%, or 0-25 air particles)
• Yellow - Fair (between 70%-84%, or 26-80 air particles)
• Red - Poor (between 0%-69%, or 81-430+ air particles)

Otherwise, it has a control panel on the top of its unit with four touch button options. From left to right, these are On/Off, Air Info, Brightness and Fan Speed. Press the Air Info button to switch between air quality views on its screen. So, as well as the baseline reading of air quality, you can also see:

• PM 1.0 - total particles that are the size of allergens
• PM2.5 - total particles that are the size of smoke
• PM10 - total particles that are the size of dust

When cycling through these modes, you'll notice each one has its scoring modes. These aren't explained, but you will notice that, depending on whatever your air purifier has flagged, each one will increase or decrease. For example, when I blew out a candle, the PM2.5 reading went crazy, as this tracks smoke.

As previously mentioned, there are 5 modes plus an auto mode. There is also an Eco mode but this cannot be enabled by the user. This will kick into action once the air purifier has reached 100% and stayed there for 5 minutes. This mode optimises filter life and is the most efficient mode.

After setting up the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Compact Pro and turning it on, I checked the levels in my living room, kitchen, and bedroom.

Initially, my living room read 98%. In my kitchen, the air purifier read 99%. And in my bedroom, it said 97%.

In all of the rooms I used this air purifier in, it read 'Good', which is between 85%-100%, as a baseline. I mostly used it in auto mode while testing, but it does have 5 modes, with the 5th one being the most powerful and also the loudest.

First, I did some testing in my kitchen, which measures 140 square feet, which is smaller than the recommended room size for this unit. This room has two windows and is next to a slightly busy street. I wasn't shocked that the air purifier initially read 'Good' and had a rating of 99%.

All other readings were 0, too. I was shocked, however, that when I conducted the flour test—sprinkling flour around the machine and waiting for a response— the air quality level stayed the same. I even sprinkled some on top of the machine, into the grates, and still nothing.

While I was disappointed with the results of the flour test, this air purifier was left switched on in my kitchen for an entire weekend. During this time, we cooked everything from curry to fish fingers.

The air purifier recognized when I was cooking food, and it worked hard to banish smells from the air. In particular, while cooking and serving the curry meal, its air quality rating dropped to the mid-30s. During cooking, the other air quality views were fluctuating, too. The PM1.0 rating was in the 70s, the PM2.5 hitting almost 100, and the same goes for the PM10.

It took around 20 minutes to regulate itself back into a 'Good' zone.

The next test I tried was with a candle, in my living room. I turned the air purifier onto auto mode and lit the candle beside it. I waited for a change in the stats on the machine's screen. Nothing happened immediately as I lit the candle, but the more it burned, the machine was creeping from 98% towards the low 90s, so it knew there was a problem.

Then, I blew the candle out. Within one second, the air quality rating began to decrease, eventually settling on 0%. The machine automatically switched itself to its most powerful mode. It managed to stabilize itself about two minutes later and began to creep up again, but when it hit the 60s, it was rapidly bouncing around.

Eventually, 7 minutes after I blew out the candle, the air quality rating moved from poor to fair. It stayed at the 70 mark for quite a while as it was clearly struggling to purify the air at this stage. I waited for it to reach 85% and show blue, and overall, this took roughly 45 minutes from when I initially blew the candle out.

At this time, the other statistics were going crazy. The PM 1.0 read 92 at its highest, the PM2.5 read 520, and PM10 was showing 631. After 45 minutes and when the air quality reading eventually read between 85% to 100%, these readings all read 0.

I used an upholstery spray for the next test, back in my living room. I positioned the air purifier on my coffee table and liberally sprayed an upholstery cleaner into the air. I sprayed it all over my sofa, the cushions, and the blankets. The air purifier barely recognised this spray being in the air. Its air quality rating did drop slightly, but only to 91%. It didn't change its mode and stayed at the lowest during this.

The instruction manual says that in order to check whether the air purifier is working and detecting changes in air quality, you should spray something towards the back of the unit. So, I moved it into my kitchen (where I had recently noticed it working well) and sprayed the same spray towards the back of the unit. It didn't react. I then tried a different spray, an antibacterial countertop spray, and it didn't react again.

I moved this air purifier upstairs eventually, to use while we sleep. Its reading mostly showed 'Good' while using it in this room, but I wanted to gauge a reaction. I used my dry shampoo spray while standing right next to the air purifier, and nothing happened. The numbers were bouncing around a little, but the air quality rating never dropped below 90%.

I then dug my perfume out of my nightstand and sprayed this directly behind the back of the machine. It was then that it instantly flagged, and the percentage began to drop. It only dropped to 73% and within just a few minutes, managed to bring itself back into the blue 'Good' zone.

Overall, for an air purifier of this size, that performance is about as strong as you could expect. But you might find it lacking for larger spaces or tackling specific issues as opposed to monitoring prolonged air quality.

Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Compact Pro review: Noise levels

Shark claims this air purifier runs quietly, but it doesn't claim that it runs at a specific decibel reading. I conducted my own testing, using a decibel monitor to gauge the noise level of each mode. The ambient room reading was 26dB.

• Mode 1 - 44-45dB
• Mode 2 - 47-48dB
• Mode 3 - 50-52dB
• Mode 4 - 56-57dB
• Mode 5 - 60-61dB

The overall noise level of the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Compact Pro is quiet. It doesn't have a sleep mode, but mode 1 is very quiet. In fact, it's almost silent.

Mode 5 is the highest and does make the machine noticeable in a room. The noise it gives off would be easy to sleep through and is similar to a fan. You can still watch TV with it on, but when it hits the highest mode, you might need to turn the volume up.

Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Compact Pro review: Storage and maintenance

This Shark NeverChange Compact Pro is fitted with a specially designed HEPA filter that doesn't require replacing for up to 5 years. You can see the life of your filter when you cycle through air quality views, and it will be displayed last and as a percentage. At the time I finished my review, mine read 97%.

Other than that, the only real maintenance required is every two or so months. You'll have to check the DebrisDefense Filter. This will flag up on your machine when it needs doing, just to make your life easier. This can be removed from the machine with ease after opening up the door at the back. Either remove dust with a cloth or your vacuum, but never use water. This filter protects the large HEPA filter from dust, hair, and more.

In terms of exterior cleaning, it's recommended that every two months you remove any dust that might have settled on top of it. You can use a damp cloth, but it says to avoid chemical cleaners.

If you're going to be storing it away for whatever reason, it also doesn't take up much space.

On the Shark website, this air purifier has 67 reviews. It's given a 4.7-star rating out of five. Most shoppers love it for their bedroom, and they comment on how quiet it is when in use. Reviewers love its compact size and that it takes up minimal space, and they rave about its 5-year filter. In particular, pet owners leave very positive reviews.

This month at Amazon, more than 700 people have bought this air purifier. It's highly rated at 4.5 stars with 2,000+ reviews. Overall, shoppers say it's great for pet owners, it reacts fast, and they love its 5-year filter.

How does it compare?

You can buy a range of air purifiers from Shark, but this model, the Compact Pro, is the cheapest at $179.99. Next up, pricewise, is the Shark Air Purifier with True HEPA at $199.99. The big difference between this and the Compact Pro is its size and the fact that it can cover a lot more space, up to 500 square feet. It's also heavier at 5.85lbs. It offers a child lock and four settings, plus an auto mode. You can also set it on a timer. The filter needs changing every 12 months, roughly. It's rated 4.7 stars out of 5.

It's similar to the two purifiers I've mentioned above in features, but it's best for larger spaces as it can purify rooms up to 1,200 square feet. It sits at 22 inches tall. Replacement filters are needed every 6-12 months. It's rated 4.6 stars out of 5 by reviewers.

Coming in as the most expensive Shark air purifier at $379.99, the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier MAX. It's only half an inch taller than the above, but the main difference between them is the filter—this one lasts for 5 years. It can work in rooms up to 1,400 square feet, too. Reviewers rate it 4.3 stars out of 5.

The top pick in our best air purifiers guide is the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto, which was awarded a 4.5-star rating. It's more expensive than the Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Compact Pro, at $300, while its recommended room size is slightly larger at 550 square feet. The Shark Compact Pro only covers 250 square feet. The Blueair model offers just three modes, plus an auto mode and night mode. Shark NeverChange Air Purifier Compact Pro review: Verdict

Truly one of the best air purifiers I've used in my home, this compact machine is small but mighty. It matches the room size for my living room, bedroom, and kitchen, which were the only three places I planned on using it, and it managed to flag most allergens and problems as they arose. Mostly, it was impressive at filtering the air to banish cooking smells and smoke.

It's very easy to use and convenient, as its buttons are pretty self-explanatory. I also really like that you can dim its brightness, you can turn off its beeping, and it has a child lock. Though simple to work, there are added extras like an Eco mode and the fact that you can use it with the special Anti-Odour Technology cartridges.

When it comes to design, it does come in different colorways, but the white one was best for me as I wanted it to blend in with my interiors. It's small enough to sit atop a kitchen countertop, a TV unit, or even a nightstand. It's also lightweight for easy moving around your home.

At $180, the NeverChange Compact Pro comes at an attractive price, especially since its filter will last 5 years of use. Some people might want an air purifier that connects to an app, for extra control, or they might prefer if you could set it on a timer, but that didn't bother me.

Whether you suffer from allergies, want to get rid of smells, have pets, or simply want cleaner indoor air, having one of the best air purifiers can make all the difference. Personally, I couldn’t live without my air purifier to solve my congestion problems in the mornings, and my air quality has vastly improved.

However, one problem is finding an air purifier that doesn’t encroach on your space and is quiet, especially if you plan to run it at night. Dyson has addressed these issues with the launch of the new HushJet Purifier Compact. As the name suggests, it’s small and mighty.

Dyson claims it’s the “most powerful small-format purifier yet”, and it’s engineered for whisper-quiet operation, whole-room purification with a filter that lasts five times longer.

We look forward to testing Dyson’s newest launch and seeing whether it warrants a place in our best air purifiers guide, as well as how it compares to the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 (TP11), released back in March. Although this newly launched HushJet Puirifer Compact is currently available direct from Dyson for $349, which is $200 less than the Dyson Purifier Cool PCI, available now for $549 at Dyson.

Works quietly to remove allergens

So what makes the design of the Dyson HushJet Purifier Compact special?

“We have developed a way to smooth high-speed airflow to minimise turbulence and reduce aerodynamic noise, allowing the Dyson HushJet to deliver very high-volume airflow while generating minimal noise,” says James Dyson, founder of Dyson.

Running at just 24dB while in Sleep mode, it makes it incredibly quiet. But apart from dropping the noise while you sleep, I can see the real benefit of running a quiet air purifier in the background while you’re working remotely. After all, nobody wants a loud appliance breaking their flow. So, whether you’re resting or working, it will capture airborne allergens like pollen, dust, and pet dander, reducing sniffles, dry throats, and itchy eyes.

Aside from being whisper-quiet, the air purifier is also small, although it doesn’t lack power. “We have transformed the compact purifier, creating our most efficient small-format machine yet, which captures 99.97% of pollutants as small as 0.3 microns,” Dyson adds.

Measuring 17.7in (45cm) x 9.05in (23cm) x 9.05in (23cm) — about the size of a small bedside table — and weighing 7.7lbs (3.5kg), it can cover a room up to 228 sq ft.

Design change

The new HushJet Air Purifier Compact also marks a shift for Dyson, moving away from its iconic Air Multiplier technology to what it calls a “sculptural HushJet entrainment nozzle,” which it says delivers stronger projection through airflow amplification. This involves entraining the surrounding air as the high-speed jet of air exits the nozzle. In simpler terms, Dyson describes it “like a concentrator on a hairdryer, increasing the velocity of the airflow — meaning faster, more powerful purification.”

We’ll report back once we get our hands on Dyson’s latest release and put it through our own testing to let you know if we achieve an undisturbed, allergy-free night’s sleep.

If you’re after the best air purifier that focuses purely on power and not so much aesthetic appeal or price, then the Coway Airmega ProX is worth a look.

Big and heavy, Coway’s Airmega ProX is powerful enough to clear the air in rooms large and small while getting rid of pollen, smells and germs like no other room air purifier. The three-stage filtration process uses activated charcoal and two HEPA filters so that it can work with areas as large as over 4,000 square feet – enough air-cleaning potential for an apartment or small house. Plus, its hidden handles and wheels allow it to be rolled easily from room to room.

As good as Airmega ProX is though, it lacks any app, remote control or compatibility with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple’s HomeKit. Plus, it's expensive to start with and the Airmega ProX’s filter changes can cost three times what the competition costs.

Coway Airmega ProX review: Price and availability

With a list price of $999, Coway’s Airmega ProX is not only the company’s flagship air filter but one of the most expensive room air cleaning devices you can get. It's slightly cheaper at $849 on Amazon.

Its HEPA filters cost $199 per set versus $50 per change for the competition and should be changed once a year. Often discounted by 10 percent to $179 if you buy two sets at a time (for a total of four HEPA filters), automatic delivery is available.

Coway Airmega ProX review: Design

As big as room air purifiers get these days, the 36.6 x 24.3 x 18.9 inch Airmega ProX is about the size of a small refrigerator and 10 times bigger than the diminutive AirThings Renew air cleaner.

In other words, its bulk can dominate a room, but the Airmega ProX’s rectangular shape means that it will fit better into a room’s corner than round designs like Dreo’s Air Purifer Tower Fan MC710S.

Designed and manufactured in Korea, Airmega ProX is available in white or mocha beige. At over 50 pounds, it’s a lot to lug around, although its hidden handles and lockable wheels make lifting and sliding easier.

It was just as easy to move it from one corner of the room to another as to push it from the dining room to a child’s bedroom but can be a chore lugging it on stairs. Unlike the AirThings Renew, it can’t be wall-mounted and lacks a coil-up cord compartment but the AC cord can be detached during storage

The Airmega ProX air purifier’s internal sensors measure 1-, 5- and 10-micron particles that determine how hard the air filter works in Auto mode. It doesn’t, however, work with external sensors, the way Renew can be incorporated into the AirThings landscape and its View Plus desktop console.

Coway Airmega ProX review: Ease of use

I found the Airmega ProX’s onboard control panel to be excellent and user-friendly. It not only shows the current particulate level, but its LED air quality dot glows blue when the air is good, while light green is for moderate and yellow for unhealthy air. Red indicates very unhealthy air and a warning to leave the room.

In addition to indicators for when it’s time to clean the prefilter and change the main filter, the Airmega ProX’s panel also shows whether it’s in Eco, Silent, Turbo or Auto mode. Its choice of three airflow speeds is adequate but I prefer the flexibility that comes with five or more fan speeds for balancing air flow and noise level.

However, as much as I liked the Airmega ProX’s huge air flow, I was disappointed that it lacked a remote control and can’t be used with Coway’s IoCare app, Alexa, Home Kit or Google Assistant. Because it starts in Auto mode, I was able to jury rig a crude remote control by plugging the air filter into a Kasa Mini Smart Plug. I can’t adjust anything, but I can remotely turn the filter on and off.

Cleaned air flows out of the unit’s top but it lacks louvers or the ability to oscillate sending filtered air side-to-side as the MC710S can. The Airmega ProX’s Clean Air Deliver Rate (CADR) score is three-times higher than the AirThings Renew device at 580 cubic feet per minute for dust, 568 ft³/min for smoke and 450 ft³/min for pollen. Capable of cleansing the air once every hour for a 4,253 square foot room or every 30 minutes for a 2,126 square foot room, it’s the rare room-sized air filtration system powerful enough for a small or mid-sized house.

Coway Airmega ProX review: Performance

After unboxing the Airmega ProX’s large box, I plugged it in next to an AC floor vent in my 25 x 12 foot office to clean and circulate the room’s air. It started in Auto mode.

There was plaster and paint work being done in an adjacent room and the Airmega ProX’s Auto mode compensated for the extra airborne dust; when the air is clean enough, it goes into power-saving Eco mode. The control panel showed that the particulate level topped out at 66 micrograms per cubic meter (μgr/m³) and its yellow warning light glowed. It soon returned to 1 or 2 μgr/m³. I could hear it working hard at times but otherwise it was quiet.

At its three fan settings, the Airmega ProX shows the air handling power of its dual fan approach with air speeds of 5.6 miles per hour, 8.1 mph and 13.7 mph measured 36 inches above the vent. That’s significantly more breeze than other room air cleaners deliver.

On the other hand, it came at the cost of slurping electricity rather than sipping it with power use of 12.2 watts, 27.0 watts and 62.4 watts at its three fan settings. If it runs at its minimal setting 24/7 and you pay the national average of 16 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity, it will add up to an annual electricity bill of $17.10 – three to five times what other air cleaners cost to use.

Still, I found the Airmega ProX surprisingly quiet compared to its peers, which deliver less air flow. Measuring 36-inches from the vent, the Airmega ProX produced noise levels of 40.1dBA, 43.3 dBA and 50.4dBA at its three fan settings in a room with a background noise level of 37.1dBA. That’s significantly hushed compared to the Renew and MC710’s 55.1 dBA and 55.0 dBA at full blast.

Despite having two filters to change, this was straightforward. After taking off the prefilter, I pulled on the fabric tabs to remove each HEPA filter. The new ones quickly popped into place. Coway covers the parts most likely to break (the motor and electronics) for five years. Everything else has a one year warranty, which is on a level with its competition.

Coway Airmega ProX review: Verdict

Coway’s Airmega ProX may be big and heavy (and pricey), but it is the best choice for clearing the air in a large room or even a small house. Its dual- fan approach, activated charcoal and HEPA filtration can cover a lot of territory but it lacks an app or voice control with Alexa, Google Assistant or Home Kit.

Bear in mind, it's expensive to purchase and use. Plus, its filters cost three-times that of other air cleaners. Still, the Airmega ProX is the best way to keep the air clean in a large area.

One thing I love is a home appliance that promises to do it all. And that’s exactly what you get with the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1: an air purifier, space heater, and cooling fan, all wrapped up in a sleek tower design. If you’re like me and lacking space at home, then having three separate appliances in one unit is utter perfection, saving on the hassle of finding space and storage. But with Dyson’s premium price tag, I was intrigued to find out whether it really lived up to the hype.

I live in a Victorian terraced house, and as much as I love older homes like mine (full of character, as I like to try and convince myself), they can be prone to damp and mold, which is far from ideal. Throw in two terriers that smell of 'eau de wet dog' and shed hair everywhere, and an air purifier is more of a necessity rather than a luxury.

Since the best air purifiers can help to remove allergens, pet dander, dust, and even lingering odors, they are a great addition for most households. Especially if you suffer from allergies, have pets, or live in a slightly damp home.

I tried the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 out for a month, putting it through its paces to really test whether it’s worth the investment. I moved it between my living room, home office, and kitchen to see how well it tackled everything from cooking odours to dog dander. I monitored how quickly it heated and cooled the room down, and of course, the air quality. The big question is, can it really do it all and do it well, or is it a case of style over substance? Here’s what happened.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 Review: Price and availability

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 has been around in the US for a couple of months and is currently retailing at $659.99 direct from Dyson. You can also purchase the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 via Amazon, for the same price.

It launched this September in the UK and you can buy it for £549.99 from Dyson. It also comes with a two-year guarantee that covers parts, repairs, and replacement if your unit is unrepairable.

Whilst you won’t need to think about it for the first year, Dyson does recommend changing the 360° glass HEPA and activated carbon filter every 12 months or when notified by your machine if it’s needed sooner. This is going to set you back $79.99 or £75 if in the UK.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 Review: Design

If there is one thing that Dyson does better than any other company, it’s make household appliances look good. And the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 has the signature Dyson look: modern, sleek, and instantly recognizable. It follows the same oval loop design as other air purifiers and fans in the Dyson line-up, so it’s certainly a design you’ve seen before.

I was taken aback at how big it first appeared. I’ve never owned a Dyson before, so looking at the photographs, I thought that it would be a little smaller. Standing at 77cm tall, this is a machine that will get noticed, but it does have a slim, sphere base, which means it doesn’t take up too much floor space. It’s not heavy either, at 5.3kg, it’s light enough to be able to move it from room to room or between floors with little effort.

It comes in a white finish, although black is available in the US, and there is a small LED display to the front which will give you everything you need to know, including air quality, filter life, fan speed, and temperature. The controls are kept to a minimum with just an on/off button, as it can be controlled via the remote or the MyDyson app. The remote is small, but if you’re like me and forever losing remotes, you’ll be impressed to hear that it’s magnetised and attaches to the top of the purifier, so when it’s not in use, it’s much harder to lose. The remote is straightforward to use with all the buttons clearly labelled.

Another standout design feature is its wide oscillation. This machine can rotate up to 350º, meaning air will circulate to all corners of the room. You can also tilt the loop to be able to direct the airflow where you want it, but this feature isn’t really needed with the oscillation being so wide.

The filter sits inside the base and is completely sealed. It can be opened up by pressing the two push buttons on either side of the base, making changing the filter completely hassle-free.

Whilst Dyson hasn’t had a design shake-up with this air purifier, you’d be hard-pushed to tell the difference between other models. It does tick both the stylish and functional boxes. I was impressed at how seamlessly it blended into each room I placed it in.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 Review: Set-up and use

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 arrived in a simple, but branded cardboard box. The box is quite big, but I was easily able to lift it out. I was impressed by the packaging too, apart from a couple of plastic coverings, everything was recyclable and fit in my main recycle bag at home, so total win if you don’t want boxes hanging around your house for weeks.

The main unit was already attached, so the only thing to do was to place the filter inside. These go into the base of the unit, so once the stickers holding the base together are removed, just clip the filter in, plug in the machine, and you’re ready to begin the set-up.

Set-up was surprisingly easy. I always dread anything you have to set up with an app because for some reason, it takes ten times longer, but this was a really quick process. I scanned the QR code on the front of the machine and downloaded the app, once the Wi-Fi was connected, it instantly detected the fan and connected it to my devices.

You can, of course, just control it with the remote control, this already has batteries included, so it’s just a case of turning it on and switching to the setting you want to use. To be honest, if you’re going to enjoy the full benefits of it, download the app so you can control it from anywhere, which is handy if you want to warm up or cool down a room before use.

Having tested other air purifiers in the past, including the Mila, this is the easiest and simplest set-up I’ve experienced, taking under five minutes of coming out of the box. Probably the biggest hurdle was learning what all the functions are, and even that didn’t take too long.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 Review: Performance

Testing air purifier

I put the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 to the test in the four main areas of my home: the living room, my home office, the kitchen, and the bedroom, to really test its performance.

I’ve been using the Mila air purifier for a while, and that usually tells me that the air quality isn’t very good, so I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the air quality came up as good in each of the rooms I tried it in. With all rooms reading as good, I initially started to worry that the air purifier was faulty or I’d left plastic on the filter (something I’ve done before), but I realised that’s not the case.

The Dyson purifies the room with an activated carbon filter which has been enriched with Tris, a chemical that captures gases and 99.97% of pollutants. And this air purifier works so fast, it brings the air quality down to good in mere minutes.

I tested this theory in a couple of ways. First, I lit two large, scented candles and left them by the machine. This didn’t spike the air quality as much as I thought it would, but having looked into it, the Dyson has the sensors on the bottom, so it would’ve already filtered the air by the time it had sucked it in.

My next test was with room spray. I gave my living room a good spritz around, and the air quality went instantly went into the red zone, which is very poor, and the fans kicked in to start bringing the air quality back to green. It took just seconds to go from very poor to good, and I felt the difference in the air too. Normally, the room spray will make me cough and splutter, but it totally neutralised it and left the air feeling fresh.

Another test was during cooking. I grabbed my cast iron pan, which creates a lot of smoke, and started to fry an egg in oil. Usually, that smell lingers for hours, but the Dyson ran throughout. Not only did it limit the smoke but also neutralized cooking odors, leaving the kitchen feeling fresh and clean. Checking the history on the app, you can see where the PM2.5 and PM10’s rose during those times, before the fans kicked in on auto function to keep the air quality in a good range.

Testing heater and cooling fan

My next tests were for the heater and cooling fan performances. It has 290 litres per second of powerful airflow and it really does feel like it, but because of the bladeless design it feels more natural.

Again, I tested it in different rooms, and the results didn’t disappoint. I’ll start with the cooling fan which can bring the temp of your room down to 33 degrees Fahrenheit. When I first tried it, I didn’t think that it really got that cold, but the trick was putting it on top speed and then reducing it when the cold air kicked in.

The fan speed affects how strong the cooling sensation feels rather than being able to set a certain temperature. The great thing about this cooling fan is that it feels more like a breeze (especially when the oscillation is on) rather than it just blowing directly onto you.

Similarly, the heat setting can get your room up to 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Trust me when I say, it heats up quickly and it maintains the temperature for ages. This is because the heat element uses ceramic plates, and the heat felt more like a nice, warm breeze rather than oppressive heat like when using a space heater. I set it up in my living room, which is a little compact to say the least, and it heated up within five minutes. This is good news as it means that it’s more cost-effective than putting the central heating on for the whole house.

Whether it’s air purifying, cooling, or heating, the Dyson works really quickly and efficiently. The built-in sensors and automatic adjustments make it so convenient and efficient. Plus, having the option to control it from anywhere via the app is a really nice touch.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 Review: App

The app is where the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 really excels. In fact, it’s the key to getting the most out of this machine.

Downloading the app is quick and easy, and it’s available on all platforms. The only thing I found was that sometimes there was a little bit of lag between my app and the machine, but that is most likely down to my Wi-Fi signal rather than the machine itself.

Inside the app, you’ll find everything you need to know about the air quality in your home. It updates the air quality every 30 seconds, so you get a real-time view of what’s going on. Although, I will say that the purifier works so well with this machine that you’ll rarely see anything but “good” pop up on the screen.

Additionally, it gives you the overall air quality report, which ranges from severe to good. There’s an auto-target setting, which when in auto mode means your machine will automatically increase its fan speed and start purifying the air when it notices air pollution going above a certain level.

It monitors the PM2.5 and PM10 levels. PM2.5 is when microscopic particles are smaller than 2.5 microns, this is usually smoke, cooking smells, candles burning, or room sprays. Then PM10 is when microscopic particles are smaller than 10 microns, this includes pollen, pet dander and other allergens. It also gives a chart of the indoor temperature in your room.

The app allows you to fully control your machine. It has an on/off button and night mode. Night mode is great if you want to continue to use the air purifier whilst you sleep, it dims the LED screen and reduces the fan speed so that you’re not disturbed whilst you try to sleep.

You can turn the heater or the fan on and set it to a desired temperature. Once it reaches the temp you’ve set, the machine will auto switch off and only turn back on when it drops below that level. My favourite feature is how you can control the oscillation. The machine can oscillate up to 350º and you can set it in increments of 45º, 90º, 180º and 350º. But the clever thing the app allows you to do is drag the oscillation to where you want it to be directed. So whether that’s direct in front of you or a certain area of the room. It’s a really clever feature because it gives you more control over where you can place your fan, instead of having to have it close to you.

There is a timer function. You can time it to switch off anywhere between 15 minutes and 9 hours. If you want to create a schedule for your air purifier, this can also be done in the app. You can choose to turn your machine on at specific days and times.

If you use a voice assistant like Amazon Alexa, Google Home or Siri, then you can pair it with that. I tested it out with Siri and you can add a variety of different commands such as Turn on the heat, Turn on cooling, Say goodnight etc. You can set these commands up to be whatever you want and it was really easy to do, just add the settings and record the phrase you want to use in conjunction. This worked really well some of the time, but that’s mostly down to Siri as half of the time it doesn’t understand me anyway (not sure if it’s the Welsh accent or I just don’t speak very clearly).

The app is optional but in my opinion, it’s absolutely essential to ensure that you can use your machine in the best way possible. It’s free to use and if you have a smartphone, there’s no harm in downloading it and giving it a try.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 Review:Noise levels

One thing I hate about having a fan on during the summer months is the noise. I can’t stand the sound of a fan whirling away in the background, and would actually prefer to just be too hot. So when I read that the Dyson had ten fan settings, I thought there was no way that I’d be turning it up to ten, no matter how hot or cold I was, purely because of the noise.

Well, I’m happy to admit that I was wrong. Even at full speed, this unit doesn’t get too loud. Dyson say that it reaches 63dB but at full speed I didn’t have to turn the TV up, of course I could hear it for anyone out there worried about my ear health but it just wasn’t that annoying. At the lower speeds, it was barely noticeable. This makes it a great choice for anyone who likes to have the fan on whilst they sleep or work because there are no distractions at all.

Not the most scientific test, but I popped my Apple Watch on and sat next to the fan to see what kind of sound level it picked up. At the lowest fan setting it didn’t even register, but I was not too shocked to see that even at full speed it was as Dyson states just 63dB.

If you’re a very light sleeper, then maybe it would be too disruptive, but for the average person, you’ll hardly notice it on other than feeling that rush of warm or cold air.

It is worth noting that whilst it monitors air quality, it doesn’t make any noise, so if you want to keep an eye on your stats, you don’t have to have the fans running, it will just keep a check on the quality but not actually purify the air.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 Review: Storage and maintenance

When it comes to maintenance, the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 is pretty straightforward. Even though it doesn’t have blades, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t still attract dust, so it is important to regularly wipe the outside of your machine with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth. I personally do this every week because it just stops dust from building and causing any blockages, which can affect the performance of the machine.

The major maintenance comes with the filter. It comes with a 360° HEPA + Activated carbon filter, which needs to be replaced every 12 months or sooner if needed. Once the filter needs replacing, the LED screen to the front of the unit and the App will send a notification. In the app, if you navigate to machine settings, it will tell you how much of your filter life is remaining, this is handy as you can at least get a head start on when you need to start budgeting for a new one. You can also order a new filter via the app so you know you’ll be getting the right one for your machine.

The process of changing the filter is also simple. The side of the unit has two push buttons, which will release the outer cover. Once that’s off, you’ll see the filter has two tabs which, when pushed down, removes the filter. Push the replacement filter in its place and replace the outer cover. It does feel like the outer cover isn’t quite on when you replace it, but you’ll know it is because it clicks into place.

The filters aren’t the cheapest, coming in at $79.99, but it’s really important that you commit to changing them every year. If you don’t, then the purifying function just won’t work, and instead of trapping pollutants, it will potentially push them back out into the air.

When it comes to storage, you’re probably not going to want to put this unit away. After all, it can be used all year around so it’s not really a case of having to pop it in the cupboard until the appropriate season rolls around. It’s not the smallest but it’s curved design does mean that it will fit neatly in to any space even when not in use. The great thing with this machine is even if you don’t want to use it as a fan or heater, you can leave it just run in the background to purify the air.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 Review: How does it compare?

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 is a step up from the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool HP01. The HP1 has a few differences, including an upgraded activated carbon filter, which is enhanced with a chemical called Tris that can capture more gases, odours, and VOCs.

It also has a real-time air quality display via the LCD and the app, showing the different levels of pollutants, which the HP01 lacked. The HP1 also has an automatic mode which uses enhanced sensors that can automatically detect the changes in air quality and adjust its fan speed to keep the air healthy. This makes a huge difference as it can save plenty of energy - which is always good during a time of rising energy costs.

Oscillation is another huge change with the HP1; this one now oscillates up to 350º, whereas the HP01 only went to 70º. Finally, the HP1 uses Air Multiplier Technology; whilst other models offer this, this one has a powerful airflow of up to 290 litres per second, which means it can heat and cool a room quickly and effectively.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 Review: Verdict

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP1 is a brilliant air purifier that also has the added benefit of having a heater and fan included. Although it’s marketed as an air purifier first and foremost, it works just as well for anyone looking for an easy way to heat up or cool down a room.

At $659.99/£549.99 it’s not a cheap option, but is it worth the money? I certainly think so. After all, you’re putting three machines in one unit. It delivers HEPA grade filtration, rapid heating via ceramic plates, cooling tech for the summer months and plenty of smart technology and controls via the MyDyson app.

If you have a large space then this is a great option, this air purifier can reach up to 81m³. Plus the 350º oscillation really spreads the heat and coolness to all corners of a room.

There’s also plenty of unique touches, such as a magnetic remote, bladeless fan design, and automatic settings, so you can relax knowing your room will be kept at an ambient temperature, and the air quality will also be good.

It is a premium air purifier, and whilst pricey, it does offer great value for money. It’s also light enough to move from room to room so you don’t have to have multiple fans to cover all bases. I’m also really impressed by the connectivity too as it kept well connected and never dropped out. Plus, with plenty of stats to keep on top of how well the air quality in the house is doing, it’s a brilliant machine that in my opinion is worth the high price tag.

If you often suffer from congestion, a runny nose or a sore throat (at any time of year), chances are, it might be down to your AC and indoor air quality. Like most systems around the home, even the best air conditioners need regular care and maintenance to ensure it ventilates air properly, and always blows cold air.

But, could an air conditioner potentially make you sick? Before you buy a new AC system, we asked the experts to answer our questions and explain the things we need to look for.

Could your AC make you sick?

According to experts, the answer is no. In fact, it’s not your actual AC unit that is making you feel sick — but the way you use or maintain it.

“It’s not your AC making you feel sick,” states Keith Wortsmith, President of DASH Heating & Cooling. “It’s you forgetting changing filters, never cleaning coils and drain line, shutting doors with no return vents tightly, and having a vent blasting right at you."

There are a few causes, but dirty filters are still the number one. When a filter is dirty, everything, including dust, viruses, and allergens slip through, collect on the coil, and get blown back into the room.

"Closing doors with no return paths when the air conditioner is running can really make you feel bad but almost nobody even knows about it," Wortsmith adds. "When you close the door, air comes in but can’t get out, and this creates a pressure imbalance that sucks dusty musty air from the attic through tiny cracks. This is how you get stuffy nose, scratchy throat, dry eyes, headaches, and lousy sleep.”

Additionally, a clogged filter can not only become a hotbed for bacteria, but can spread it around the home. “AC systems pull in particles, moisture and debris which creates a breeding ground for bacteria mold and other pathogens so every time your AC runs it is circulating contaminants throughout your home,” adds Jason Spurk, the owner of Spurk HVAC.

“A properly working air conditioner can improve indoor air quality, but if it is neglected, it can become the root of your air problems,” he says.

If you do want to quickly filter airborne pollutants however, or suffer from allergens, it’s always good to invest in one of the best air purifiers.

How often should you clean the filter?

So now we know symptoms are down to a dirty AC filter, how can this we fix this?

"In most homes, AC filters should be cleaned or replaced every 1 to 3 months, depending on the usage, the type of filter and the environment,” says David Miloshev, HVAC expert at Fantastic Services.

“For example, households with pets, smokers or people with allergies will often need more frequent cleaning. If the filters aren’t maintained, dust and debris will gradually clog them, restricting airflow and forcing the system to work harder. This not only reduces its cooling efficiency but also drives up the energy costs and increases the wear on components such as the blower motor.”

Tips to avoid feeling unwell when using your AC

Luckily, there are some things you can do to prevent feeling unwell. The key thing is to allow proper ventilation and overall care.

“Neither you nor your system feels good with dirty filters, dirty indoor coil and drain, and bedroom doors are tightly shut — so fix that first,” agrees Wortsmith.

“And remember about these three tricks that are actually just the basics that people neglect: set the fan to “auto” (not “on”), direct vents away from beds and sofas, and set the thermostat to 2°F higher so it runs longer and pulls in excess moisture. People feel best when indoor humidity hovers around 35–60% range.”

If you do suffer from high humidity in your home, particularly in bathrooms with no windows, you can invest in one of the best dehumidifiers to help draw in moisture.

Top tips to use your AC during fall/winter seasons

Although our AC unit works harder during summertime, it can still be used during fall months, with the following tips.

"Run the fans or occasional AC cycles even when heating, just to keep air moving and filters working," suggests Spurk.

"Keep filters fresh, and flush the system before summer. A final pre-winter cleaning staves off spring surprises. Also, consider switching to heating system air handlers, but keep the same cleaning habits. Dirty air doesn’t take the season off."

In addition, don't forget about maintaining the outdoor AC unit to protect it from the elements. “For the outdoor AC unit, cover it with a breathable cover to protect it from leaves, snow and ice, but avoid sealing it completely, because any trapped moisture can cause corrosion,” adds Miloshev.

“Running the system occasionally on fan-only mode during milder days can help keep the air circulating and reduce indoor stuffiness. Maintaining proper humidity is especially important in winter, since dry air can cause respiratory discomfort and static buildup, so consider using a humidifier in combination with your HVAC system.

Lastly, don’t forget your thermostat. Switch it to a heating schedule and if you have a programmable or smart model, adjust the settings to save energy when you’re asleep or away from home.”

The A3 is a different form factor from the Mila altogether, though both units offer tons of different filters, lots of air movement, lots of air purifying, and quiet operation.

Both are absolutely right about their products. The Rabbit Air A3 Ultra Quiet Air Purifier can filter air in a versatile form factor that you can place on the floor or wall-mount.

But while it’s easy to use and packed with great features, is it worth the expensive price tag? Find out what happened when I tested the Rabbit Air A3 Ultra Quiet Air Purifier in my home.

Rabbit Air A3 Ultra Quiet Air Purifier review: Price and availability

The Rabbit Air A3 is available for purchase for costs $750 on Amazonand the same price on the Rabbit Air website

Additionally, Rabbit Air offers free shipping and a five year warranty, and replacement filters cost $115.

The two key accessories for the Rabbit Air A3 are the various face plates in the artist series, and replacement filters.

A standard, plain front panel will cost you $30, while the Artist Series front panels will cost $70 each. You can also purchase an extra wall mount bracket for $8 and an Essence Kit if you want to add some scents to your room for $20.

The pre-filter replacement is $20, but these are washable and should last a very long time if you keep up on maintenance.

The Filter Replacement Kit costs $116 and you’ll likely need to change these out once a year.

Rabbit Air A3 Ultra Quiet Air Purifier: Design

Design-wise, the Rabbit Air A3 looks pretty darn cool right out of the box, especially if you got the artist series.

There are several arist series front plates to choose from, so you can really customize this unit to your tastes. That makes it versatile enough to fit into any aesthetic; and if the artist series plates aren’t your thing, you can still get the standard series for a more discreet look.

Beyond aesthetics, the A3 offers even more versatility by allowing you to place it on a floor or table, or if you’d rather, you can mount it to a wall to keep it out of the way and save floor space.

All of the real meat of the unit is within, however. A Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor is designed to operate exceptionally quietly, and Rabbit Air says the unit should measure around 20dB on the lowest fan setting.

The A3’s filtration system features six stages: a Customized filter, BioGS HEPA Filter, Dual Hive Activated Carbon Filter (odor absorption), Medium Filter, and Pre-Filter.

The sixth stage is a negative ions setting. Negative ions are molecules that attach themselves to airborne particles. According to Rabbit Air, this weighs down said particles and makes it easier for them to get trapped by the air purifiers.

The customized filters are tailored for specific purposes. The options include Green Tea, Germ Defense, Toxin Absorber, Pet Allergy, and Odor Remover.

My test unit came with the Pet Allergy filter. I don’t have a pet allergy, but I do have a dog — and a good friend with a dog allergy. According to Rabbit Air, the filter should last up to two years with 12-hour daily operation.

Rabbit Air also touts the A3’s 3 element sensing: particles, odors, and light. Basically, when the unit senses an increase in particles and odors in the air, it will automatically adjust the fan speed up.

And the light sensor cuts down on light pollution by defaulting to a dimmed lighting when the room gets darker. You can also turn it all the way off, of course.

The A3’s Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR, ranges between 257 and 315 square meters per hour for the standard edition, and 256 to 313 square meters per hour on the artist series.

It’s unclear from Rabbit Air’s website and literature as to why there’s a difference between the standard and artist series. All told, Rabbit air says the A3 can filter 8,560 cubic feet of air in 30 minutes.

The A3 is WiFi and Bluetooth enabled, and works with the Rabbit Air app. More on that below. And on top of the unit, you can control the A3 on the LED screen without using the app at all if you prefer. There’s an LED indicator as well; 5 LEDs lit means your air quality is not good; one LED means you’re in the clear.

Rabbit Air A3 Ultra Quiet Air Purifier review: Performance

Where I live, just outside of Denver, air quality is always an issue.

If we’re not dealing with wildfire smoke, we’re still breathing in notoriously bad air from traffic and manufacturing.

My main goal with using an air purifier is to ensure particulate matter remains at a minimum within my main living spaces.

After a quick search on the internet, the A3 appears to be quite popular with smokers who want to reduce odors in their homes. While I enjoy the occasional cigar, I never smoke indoors, so sadly, I can’t test the unit’s capabilities here.

But within my living room, there’s plenty of lousy air to test the A3’s ability to scrub out particulate matter. During the day, I usually don’t hear the A3 operating at all, and that coincides with very low levels of particulate matter, according to the Rabbit Air app.

In the evenings, right around dusk, it seems the air quality worsens. And that’s when the A3’s fan kicks up to higher speeds.

In my living room, which measures around 200 square feet — and is connected in a semi-open-floor-plan to the kitchen, which is about 150 square feet — the A3 ran on medium and high settings for about 20 minutes before the particulate matter was under control and the app told me I had excellent air quality again. The readings were largely consistent with my Alexa air quality monitor.

Noise levels:
At its lowest setting, the A3 is super quiet at just 22 decibels. When it’s running on high, it tops out around 56 decibels.

That’s great for small spaces, though when it’s chugging on high, you may find it annoyingly loud if you’re watching a TV show or listening to music.

Still, for the work it’s putting in, it operates very quietly almost all of the time.

The A3’s CADR numbers are good but not great. By comparison, Mila’s Air 3 moves over 100 square meters per hour more than the max setting of the Rabbit Air A3.

To be clear, this is a measure of efficiency, and theoretically, the Mila cleans the air in a given space more quickly than the Rabbit Air. It’s also worth noting that the Mila Air 3 cleans a larger space more efficiently, though in my experience, the Mila is louder.

App:
The Rabbit Air app is perhaps the A3’s biggest weakness. While it’s not bad, it’s not exactly good either.

On the bright side, it’s easy to get signed up and paired to WiFi, as well as to the unit itself. And it’s easy to control the unit, too.

But it’s really limited in other data. There’s not much to parse within the app, except for very basic particulate matter data, broken down into PM1, PM2, and PM3 buckets. Like the unit itself, the levels of ‘cleanliness’ are measured with dots, one through five. One is good, five is not good.

But if you’re unsure of the difference between those PMs, or want other information about what’s happening with your air, you won’t find it in the app. Instead, you’ll need to search the internet to interpret what the app shows you.

It’s also worth noting that in the app store, there are two Rabbit Air apps. I wasn’t sure which one was most current, so I tried both.

There doesn’t appear to be much substantive difference between the two, but I think the most current is the Rabbit Air 2 app.

Rabbit Air A3 Ultra Quiet Air Purifier review: Verdict

Overall, the Rabbit Air A3 boasts an excellent form factor and versatility.

Its CADR numbers are good, but not best in class, which is a big problem given how expensive this unit is, and the app is very limited.

So ultimately, it’s a mixed bag here. If you’re looking for a unit that can clean the air in a medium size room in under 20 minutes at a very low noise level, and price isn’t an issue, the Rabbit Air shines.

If you want lots of information on your air quality, the Rabbit Air app falls short.

In which case you might be better off opting for the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto.

Still, if its peace you're after, the Rabbit Air A3 operates very quietly almost all of the time.

If you’re after the best air purifier that won't look like an eyesore, the Blueair Signature is meant to be seen.

Although it looks like modern furniture, under its neutral colored skin is an air cleaner is like no other and can be used as a table or footrest.

The Blue Signature’s unique 7 stage cleaning process starts with electrostatic and HEPA filtration and extends to multi-layered odor elimination but lacks any germ killing ability, though.

Quiet and easy to forget about, the Blue Signature efficiently cleans the air and is a great place to put your feet up or your coffee cup down.

Blueair Blue Signature Purifier review: Price and availability

The Blueair Signature is available for $499 on Amazon but is often discounted.

It costs the same with a filter subscription that ships replacements as needed based on use. They cost $100 or $85 with the subscription.

There are also washable fabric prefilters that cost $25 and are available in six colors if you decide to repaint the room. The stretchy fabric pre-filter needs periodic vacuuming and can be machine washed.

Plus, Blue Signature has an add-on chrome base for $100 or four wooden screw-on legs for $80.

Blueair sells a variety of air cleaners, heaters and humidifiers that range from the $100 Pure Air 511 to the $700 flagship Classic Pro CP7i.

Blueair Blue Signature Purifier review: Design

At first glance, the Blue Signature purifier looks more like furniture than an air filtering device.

Designed in Sweden and built in Asia, it has a restrained Nordic aesthetic.

It has a slightly conical profile and takes up 15.8 by 15.5 inches of floor space. At 17.2 inches tall, it’s one-third larger than the Windmill air cleaner.

At 13 pounds, it’s light enough to grab its integrated handles and carry it from room to room, but the Blue Signature lacks wheels.

Blueair sells an add-on $100 Chrome base as well as $80 screw-on wooden legs that raise it about four inches off the floor. Either way, it would be a shame to hide it in a room’s corner.

On the other hand, its 11-pound weight limit means that sitting on the Blue Signature is not a good idea. It is, however, OK as a footrest and table for light items, like books or coffee mugs.

Room air enters through the fabric pre-filter around its circumference and passes through the Blue Signature’s two-stage HEPA filter that removes 99.97 percent of particles 0.1 micron or larger from the room’s air. This is followed by an electrostatic filter that eliminates charged air pollutants.

While competitors treat smell reduction as an afterthought, Blue Signature Active OdorFence has four separate elements, ranging from removing volatile organic compounds and an activated carbon layer to an enzymatic treatment and a unique mineral odor fighter. It lacks any germ-killing ability, though.

The cleaned and deodorized air comes out the vaned ring at the top in a vertical spiral of cleaned air. There are no louvres to aim its flow.

Additionally, Blue Signature’s laser sensor can detect particulates of 1-, 2.5-, and 10 microns in diameter. It, however, does without a volatile organic detector, something the Airthings’ Renew filter has for greater control of the cleaning process.

Blueair Blue Signature Purifier review: Ease of use

Getting the Blue Signature up and running took all of 7 minutes and started with unboxing it and removing the packing materials.

On top are Blueair’s philosophy and the product’s attributes. And it came ready to go with a sticker on top that details its basic operations.

It was easy to upload the app on my Samsung Galaxy S25 phone and tapped the “+” in the upper right, followed by selecting the device.

After I pressed the unit’s Auto button for five seconds, the WiFi connection process started before I added my network and password.

Its two-prong plug means the Blur Signature is "old house friendly", and the 74 inch cord was convenient. Unlike the Molekule Air Pro, there’s no place to spool any excess cord.

Don’t let the Blue Signature’s old school dot matrix display fool you. The touch-screen interface is sophisticated, showing the current PM2.5 level as well as whether it’s in automatic mode or the fan’s setting.

Its purposely crude animation shows a half-moon for nighttime, and how much time remains until the air will be fully cleaned. A checkmark means the filter is OK.

Upfront, the Blue Signature’s color-coded LED bar shows the current air quality. Blue meaning the air is excellent, while green and yellow indicate moderately dirty air.

Once the light is red, it’s a good idea to open a window or leave the room.

Blueair Blue Signature Purifier review: Performance

Once I set up the air purifier in my 300 square foot office, I noticed the Blue Signature’s Auto mode was surprisingly quiet. However, it got a little loud when working hard to clean polluted air.

Blue Signature’s manual mode has five fan settings, including a setting where the fan is off, but the unit continues to operate.

Measured a foot from the Blue Signature, the no. 2 level – the lowest fan speed – wasn’t enough to register with my La Crosse anemometer wind gauge.

While settings 3, 4, and 5 pushed a 1.2-, 4.3-, and 7.0 mile per hour (mph) breeze. That’s slightly more air flow than Blueair’s larger Classic Pro CP7i top speed of 6.5 mph.

In Auto mode, the Blue Signature’s operation is controlled solely by its particulate readings. It was particularly fast to react to the grass outside my office being cut (with the window open), and had spiked for three minutes.

Similarly, when I lit my bad-smelling candle, the Blue Signature’s LED went red, then yellow and green with the fan at full blast. After I blew it out, the filter took 6 minutes and 41 seconds to clear the air.

On the flour particle test, the Blue Signature displayed a yellow light, and then the air was clean 1:30 later. It took a little longer to remove the perfume smell from my office at 2:10, although it never got above the lowest fan setting.

With the nearby gas grill firing away, and the office windows open, the Blue Signature’s air quality light went from blue to yellow and briefly to orange. It was back to blue five minutes after I had finished burning dinner.

Noise and energy

With the fan off, but system still running, the Blue Signature rated a quiet 37.2dBA noise level measured 36 inches from the device in a room with a 37.0 dBA background noise level.

When I switched the fan level to the first three speeds, the fan noise rose to 38.3-, 41.0-, and 51.6 dBA. At the highest fan speed, it was moderately noisy at 58.5dBA, but a lot quieter than the Molekule Air Pro’s boisterous 70.1dBA.

While in use, the Blue Signature’s power needs were modest, making it one of the most efficient devices of its kind with a measured power consumption from 2.2 to 40.6 watts.

Over the course of a typical day in my office, the unit’s Auto mode used 800 watt-hours of energy. That corresponds to $4.67 in electricity bills over a year (if you pay the national average of 16 cents per kilowatt hour), making it a bargain to use compared to Molekule Air Pro’s $38.40 in estimated electricity costs.

Maintenance

The app and device interface indicates when the filter needs changing.

Plus, the air filter has a hidden innovation inside. Instead of a QR code or Web URL, the Blue Signature has an NFC communications spot that took my phone to Blueair’s filter ordering.

The Blue Signature air filter doesn’t include an infrared remote control, but the new Blue Air app is more than enough.

Be warned, it can take upwards of half a minute for the app to relay air quality data when first using it. However, it’s worth the wait because along with what mode the cleaner is in, the interface shows the current PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 readings as well as an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading.

Simply tap on PM 1.0, 2.5 or 10 to see recent readings along with how they fit into the LED’s color scheme.

Unfortunately, its design cut off the right edge of the PM10 readings on my S25 phone’s screen, and It doesn’t run in landscape mode.

Further down is where I scheduled the Blue Signature’s activities, and adjusted the display’s brightness.

The unit’s Device settings is a must-see area for using the Blue Signature’s AirSense. It blasts the room with cleaned air for 15 minutes at 10 AM and 6 PM, regardless of the air quality.

Its Wave to Wake mode starts up the filtration when it senses motion in front, but Blue Signature lacks compatibility with Alexa and Google Home.

Blueair Blue Signature Purifier review: Verdict

Blueair’s Blue Signature is not only a powerful air purifier, but it looks good as well.

The slightly conical device should fit in just about anywhere with the option of adding a chrome base or four wooden legs. Plus, its two main colors and choice of six fabric prefilter coverings should fit in just about any home decor.

For Blue Signature, it’s what’s inside that counts with a combination of electrostatic and HEPA filtering along with Blueair’s unique four-stage odor reducing system.

It’s laser particulate sensor controls its action, but the Blue Signature lacks a volatile organic compound sensor or any way to kill airborne germs.

In any case, the Blue Signature is a powerful air cleaner that can also double as a footrest or end table.

At jus under $370, the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 is one-half the price of comparable air filters yet includes four heavy-duty cleaning components.

It comes with a 5-year warranty that should be decent, but others cover their air cleaners for life.

Rabbit Air takes a novel approach to replacement filters with a $90 set that they say will need to be changed every 18 months.

The company will automatically deliver the filters on a schedule. Plus, it estimates that it will cost $30 a year if used 12 hours a day or $60 a year for 24/7 operation.

Rabbit Air also sells the larger A3 and Minus A2 for $750 and $600. Both of which can be ordered with “Peanuts” or “Hello Kitty” designs for a child's or anime-crazed adult’s room.

Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 Air Purifier: Design

Design-wise, the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 looks like a cross between a hungry sea monster and a step-to-open garbage can.

Its design may not be for everyone, but it has a certain style and allows direct aiming of the air stream.

The problem is that the snorkel vent that delivers cleaned air points away from the status LEDs, potentially making adjusting it awkward.

However, it works best set up parallel to a wall, pointing into the room with some space behind to get close to the control panel.

Available in all white or a Tone Royal version with blue accents, it’s small at 22.2 x 16.6 x 9.8 inches and 16.8 pounds, making it portable enough to go from room to room with the unit’s handle.

And while the Rabbit Air BioGS’s 6-foot blue fabric cord has a two-prong plug to easily fit into older homes, there’s no place to stash the excess cord.

What's more, the unit lacks a tip over switch that turns itself off if accidentally knocked over. Something to bear in mind if you have children or pets.

Additionally, it comes with a remote control that uses a CR2025 battery. This has a 25-foot range and you can purchase replacements for $8.50.

The only downside is the Rabbit Air BioGS lacks WiFi and an app for using a phone to control it. This is a bonus that most air cleaners use, including Rabbit Air’s larger Minus A2.

Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 Air Purifier review: Ease of use

After removing the outer box and opening the main packaging, I read the start-up instructions taped to it and pulled the cover off.

The short manual explains things somewhat. I found myself occasionally opening the device to figure out what the lights mean and wished for a cheat sheet, like the one on the Blueair Classic Pro CP7i air purifier .
In addition to the expected laser particulate sensor, the Rabbit Air BioGS has a VOC sensor for airborne odors and solvents.

Both are used to determine how hard the purifier works. The control panel has a multitude of white LEDs that are shown through the device’s translucent cover.

The air quality is shown upfront in the number of lit LEDs, with five corresponding to good and one for bad. The device doesn’t inform those breathing the air what these broad categories equate to in terms of particulate level.

It also lacks a way to connect an external sensor, while the Air Things Renew air purifier successfully does this.

The control panel also has a similar indicator for fan speed as well as a three level control for the Auto Mode’s sensitivity. The front also has a way to turn the unit’s negative ion generator on or off, which acts like an electrostatic filter. The sleep timer can be set to 4, 8 or 12 hours. The LEDs goes dark after several minutes and can be revived by tapping the on/off indicator.

Under the cover, there are explanations and keys to control it all as well as a filter life indicator, a reminder for cleaning the pre-filter and a reset switch for after a filter change. It has neither internal automation available nor can connect with voice control systems, like Alexa and Google Home Assistant.

For a product that cleans odors out of the air, the BioGS has something that some would consider counterproductive: an accessory for diffusing essential oils to cover up household smells or work some homeopathic magic.

The $20 stainless steel Essence attachment has small felt tabs that can be soaked in any oil, from lavender to eucalyptus, and snapped onto the purifier’s vent for distribution throughout the room.

Be careful though, a little goes a long way!

Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 Air Purifier review: Performance

I set up the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 in my 25 x 12 foot office, and used the Auto mode at its highest setting during testing.

I also found the middle one worked well for general use, and was quieter.

In fact, when some yellow pollen blew in through an open window, I was impressed at how fast the Rabbit Air BioGS reacted, cleaning it from the air quickly.

After I lit my scented candle, puffed the pastry flour and sprayed my perfume, the Rabbit Air BioGS reacted quickly with the fan blasting lots of cleaned air into the room. And with the filter cleared, 15 minutes everything was back to normal.

That said, it was effective at cleaning the air with a 5-speed fan. The output ranged from a low air speed of 0.2 mph (measured 12 inches from the outlet) to a high of 1.8 mph.

Perhaps one downside is it has a low air flow rate. This gave a much slower flow reading than the likes of well-named, The Windmill Air Purifier's peak of 6.5 mph.

Noise levels:
It lives up to its Ultra Quiet name with a peak wind noise of 56 dBA versus over 70dBA for the Molekule Air Pro.

This is a five-fold difference because of the logarithmic nature of the decibel scale where small numeric differences lead to huge differences in sound level. On the downside, the BioGS delivers less cleaned air than the others.

Efficiency:
There’s also a benefit when it comes to your electricity bill because under the surface, the Rabbit Air BioGS has a high-efficiency brushless motor that uses between 3.7 and 30.0 watts of power – half what others use.

Based on a typical day’s use, expect it will add $6.58 to your bill if you pay the national average of 16 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity.

That’s close to one-quarter the cost of some other air cleaners, like the Air Pro ($38.44) or the Blueair Classic Pro CP7i air purifier($33.75).

Unlike other purifiers, Rabbit Air recommends cleaning the particulate sensor with a cotton swab periodically. This will only take about half a minute to do, so it's not a major deal breaker.

Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 Air Purifier review: Verdict

Compared to other air cleaners, the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 Air Purifier makes a loud statement by being quiet and unobtrusive.

All of this while monitoring the atmosphere and ramping up its action during an air quality crisis.

In addition, it has the rather unique feature of having an accessory for incorporating essential oils into the air stream; it’s a bargain at $20.

Plus, the Rabbit Air BioGS does without amenities that others thrive on, such as having WiFi and an app to take control from across the room or even across town. I found it simple to operate, including using the dedicated remote control.

Considering its ability to cleanse the air in a moderate sized room, the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 is surprisingly small and light. The only downside was its air flow levels pale in comparison to the best for its class.

In which case you might be better off spending a little extra for the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto.

Still, the Rabbit Air BioGS Air Purifier is a bargain that can clean up the air in a mid-sized room, with a modest stream of filtered and purified air. Which is all you really need to do a great job.

If you’re after the best air purifier that is powerful and won't look like an eyesore, the Molekule Air Pro is a good contender.

With a four-stage filtration process, the Air Pro is among the most thorough air cleaners available, but it lacks an electrostatic filter that others have. Still, it claims to eradicate bacteria and viruses, making it stand above its competition.

However, it's also one of the most expensive air cleaners you can get, and its replacement filters are similarly big-ticket items. So you'll need to weigh up these factors for long-term value.

Molekule Air Pro review: Price and availability

The Molekule Air Pro is now available for $1,014 on Amazon with one HEPA filter, two or three times what others cost.

If you sign up for the company’s automatic filter delivery schedule, the price drops to $979. They cost $175, easily twice what some competitors charge.

However, if you're on a strict budget, the company’s Air Mini+ sells for $359 on Amazon, and can cover a smaller room.

Molekule Air Pro review: Design

The Molekule Air Pro has a modernist design that looks like it could be a giant’s water bottle. It might not be for everyone, but the brushed aluminum tower is a welcome change from traditional, box-like air cleaners.

It stands 23.1 inches tall and has a diameter of 11.6 inches, making it easy to hide. That would be a shame because the extruded aluminum body and white plastic base are striking.

At 23 pounds, it’s a lot to carry. Adding wheels would have been a big help in making the Air Pro more portable, but its leather handle at least helps make it luggable between rooms.

The air enters from below, passes by a set of sensors and filters to emerge straight up through angled louvres. These give the cleaned air stream a spiral counterclockwise rotation, although there’s no way to aim its flow. Its circular vent has a blue backlight from the sterilization equipment.

Molekule Air Pro review: Ease of use

Easy to unpack, the illustrated setup instructions and a statement of Molekule’s air cleaning philosophy are printed on the box.

It came in a white duffle bag that can be used for storing the Air Pro, or as a neat laundry bag. After firmly pressing the circular top, it popped up and out, providing access to the plastic-covered HEPA filter. In a minute, everything was unwrapped, back together and ready.

It sits solidly on the floor but lacks an auto shut-off switch if the device is tipped over. The Air Pro’s heavy-duty 6-foot cord has a three-prong plug, so it might not easily fit into an older house with ungrounded outlets.

On the other hand, the Air Pro is the rare air cleaner with a place to spool the excess cord underneath, making it the one for neat freaks.

While many other air cleaners rely solely on a particulate sensor, Molekule’s technology adds measurements for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), which the Air Pro’s activated carbon layer can absorb.

Additionally, there are sensors for humidity and carbon dioxide, which can’t be significantly changed by the device’s operation. It took six hours for the sensors to calibrate themselves and provide readings.

The results show up on the Air Pro’s unique circular screen at the center of the vent. The main display shows an air quality index with lower numbers indicating better air and anything from green for “Good” to purple for “Very bad”.

Simply swipe right to see the VOC and particulate levels and swipe again to choose between Manual operation and Auto Protect; it also has an Auto Protect Quiet mode for nighttime use.

One more swipe and the filter’s lifespan is shown, followed by a screen that allowed me to turn the system off and change the language to Korean or Japanese. There’s also a place to see the device’s serial number, firmware and name.

After a few minutes of inactivity, the screen goes dark; press it to wake it up. This means that during the day there’s no outward indication that its actually running, although at night you can see the system’s blue glow. In other words, it’s unobtrusive as it gets.

Molekule Air Pro review: Performance

The Molekule Air Pro fit well in my 25 x 12 foot office and its cable spool means that there’s no extra power cord to trip over.

Inside, its VOC and laser particulate sensors track the air’s quality and adjusts the filter’s operations accordingly with six fan speeds. The system delivered 4.7 mph air speeds at its highest setting, although its lowest was too slow to register on my La Crosse anemometer. That was well below the Windmill Air Purifier's 6.5 mph peak.

I set it to Auto Protect mode and left it to get to work. It reacted quickly when I fired up the grill, that is just outside the room on a patio. The PM2.5 level rose to over 100 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), although it quickly dropped back to 2-4 µg/m³.

Our indoor tests were just as impressive. During the perfume test, the Air Pro sensed a rise of VOCs to 550 parts per billion (ppb) and PM2.5 to a peak of 25 µg/m³. It was no surprise that the fan speed went to full, and 15 minutes later, it was back to normal with no lingering odor. Not bad!

Similarly, the dust (flour) test gave a decent reading. The PM2.5 level rises to 60 µg/m³ and then 15 minutes later, back to a baseline of 2 µg/m³.

And while the candle test yielded air laden with 390 ppb of VOCs, it quickly dissipated. After 15 minutes, you could no longer smell a burned match or candle scent in the air.

Noise and energy

Noise-wise, the Molekule Air Pro is generally at a low level in the background. Still, it was very loud at 70.1 dBA, which is the upper threshold of a conversation.

Along the way, the Air Pro used between 23.9 and 57.5 watts of power, well off the Windmill’s 68.8 watts at full power.

After recording its electricity use over a full day, it should cost an estimated $38.40 a year to operate, making it the most expensive to use. The Rabbit Air BioGS uses one quarter as much electricity. If you are energy conscious though, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto gave us a lower energy usage reading.

Maintenance

There’s little maintenance required to keep the air flowing, but you will need to vacuum or shake clean the pre-filter monthly and replace the pair of HEPA filter once or twice a year.

The filter elements cost a reasonable $60 and after three weeks of continuous use, it had 93% of its lifespan remaining; it helpfully shows 171 days until a replacement will be necessary. You can sign up for automatic shipping.

It's worth noting that the Air Pro emits a sweet odor, that Molekule engineers says is from the blue light cleaning organic matter from the filter. However, this wasn't a real deal breaker.

Molekule Air Pro review: App

Despite lacking a remote control, the Molekule Air Pro's app is top notch with versions for Androids, iPhones and iPads.

The main page shows the swirling action of the filter’s fan, its mode and the status of the filter. While the indoor current Air Quality Index is at the top.

What's even more impressive is that the app has an outdoor air quality section that gives an overall appraisal based on your Zip Code when registering. You can other details like ozone, PM2.5 and several types of pollen.

Along the bottom, the app’s More tab has help for things like changing the WiFi network. It also has a place to be notified when the filter needs to be replaced. It lacks its own scheduling ability but can connect to Alexa voice control. It does without Google Home Assistant integration.

Molekule Air Pro review: Verdict

If you're after function and modern style, the Molekule Air Pro is one of the most striking purifiers yet (right up there with the Windmill Air Purifier).

In all our tests, the Air Pro performed well, keeping the atmosphere in a mid-sized room clear and breathable. Its four stage filtering process includes a germ killing stage, although it does gives off a sweet smell. This is something the makers attribute to its HEPA filter coating that sterilizes the air flow.

In fact, many buyers picked up on its characteristic odor while running as a negative aspect of the Molekule Air Pro. While others may be turned off by its noisy operation.

However, it is among one the most expensive air cleaners I've tested, at over $1,000, so it’s a luxury that you'll need to consider.

If you've invested in an air purifier but aren't seeing the results you expected, you're not alone. Even the best air purifiers can underperform when used incorrectly. You might notice your room is still dusty despite running your purifier constantly, or wonder why allergens seem just as bothersome as before.

Blueair Classic Pro CP7i air purifier review: Design

The Blueair Classic Pro CP7i is for those who revel in the industrial modern aesthetic.

Made of white and gray steel, it reminded me of an old school box fan with rounded corners and large cutouts for air to pass through. However, if you're after aesthetics, The Windmill Air Purifier is more eye-catching and will seamlessly blend in with your decor.

At 23.6 x 19.7 x 9.9 inches and 32 pounds, it’s large and heavy, however, its handle and pair of wheels can ease its movement.

It was easy to unpack and set up the CP7i by following the directions printed on the box. The unit easily slid out and I pulled the two red tabs to open the back and remove the HEPA filter’s plastic wrap. After about five minutes, it was ready for action.

Its 7.5 foot power cord is heavy duty and requires a grounded outlet, making it a tough sell in older homes.

Unlike the Molekule Air Pro, there’s no place to stash the extra cord so all you can do is coil it up. Although its feet make the unit stable, it lacks a tip-over shut off but has a child safety lock.

Inside, its laser particulate measurement device not only shows the current air quality level on its control panel, but can be set in Automatic mode to react to air quality changes; there’s no Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) sensor or provision for an external sensor, as is the case with Air Things products.

Blueair Classic Pro CP7i air purifier review: Ease of use

Located at the top of the CP7i is the 9 inch (diagonal) LCD screen showing the basics, such as the on and off switch, as well as choosing between manual, auto and sleep modes.

The four fan blades showing the CP7i’s air flow are also lit. Simply tap the two arrow heads on the right, and the 3.5 inch front display toggles among the PM1, PM2.5 and PM 10 particulate readings.

There’s also a Wi-Fi connection light and a prominent LED below shows the current air quality based on color. The five colors range from red (very polluted) to blue (healthy and safe).

The CP7i lacks a remote control, although the iOS and Android apps do even better. Controls are laid out in a long vertical strip, which requires scrolling up and down to go between turning the filter on and off and seeing the graph of the particulate level.

In addition, you can select the mode and fan speed, while a switch in the middle of the app is for using the air cleaner’s HINS Pure light to sterilize the filter’s surface. This added cleaning process can be especially helpful for those susceptible to infections.

What's more, you can set the screen’s brightness, check the filter life and turn the child lock on or off.

The CP7i has its own scheduling protocol for setting when the device turns on and off but lacks single tap sunrise/sunset options.

It's also worth noting that it can be voice controlled with Alexa but not Google Home Assistant.

Blueair Classic Pro CP7i air purifier review: Performance

First, I set up the Blueair Classic Pro CP7i air purifier in my 25 x 12 foot office, before exploring its varying options, settings and tasks.

I ended up using the Auto mode because it ran quietly in the background and rose to meet air quality challenges.

Inside, its laser particulate sensing device keeps track of the PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 particle level and adjusts its output accordingly. It doesn’t have a VOC sensor, though, so the filter’s action is based solely on the particulate level.

That said, the CP7i’s 4-speed fan moves a lot of air but can get noisy. It hit 59.1 dBA when running full blast at its highest setting; still, the Molekule Air Pro hit a peak at a much louder 70.1 dBA.

The CP7i’s lower three fan speeds rated 38.7, 45.1 and 50.2 dBA in a room that registered a 37.6dBA background noise level.

With two clean air outlets, the CP7i had lower individual air speeds than the others but if you add them together the CP7i is among the best.

I measured the flow at 0.6 miles per hour at the slowest speed and 3.3 mph at its highest. Factor in both outlets and that equals about 6.6 mph, just over the The Windmill Air Purifier's 6.5 mph.

After I lit my candle, the air filter’s PM2.5 was boosted from 1 micrograms per cubic meter to a peak of 70 µg/m^3. The fan went into overdrive, clearing the air. After 15 minutes, I was impressed there I could no longer smell the remaining candle or burnt match aroma.

What's more, the perfume test showed similar results, although the device doesn’t track VOCs.

When I dusted the cleaner with 10 puffs of pastry flour, its PM2.5 display rose to 60 µg/m³. And was quickly compensated for with the display soon showing 1 µg/m³.

Finally, I opened a nearby window and allowed a blast of witch hazel pollen into the room. The CP7i briefly registered a red alert, which was quickly reduced to blue at 3 µg/m³.

With its pair of high-output fans, the CP7i used a lot of power compared to the others. At its lowest setting, it used 7.6 watts, while that rose to 15.2 and 24.5 watts at the midrange settings and a peak of 42.2 watts.

Using a full day of typical use and you pay the national average of 16 cents per kilowatt-hour, expect to pay $33.75 a year extra electricity bills. That’s just short of the Air Purifier’s $38.40 a year in power bills.

In addition to cleaning the pre-filter, the CP7i will require new HEPA filter elements roughly between 9 and 12 months.

The pair costs $100 and after three weeks of being left on had 98 percent of its usable life remaining. The app can notify you that it’s time to order new ones.

Blueair Classic Pro CP7i air purifier review: Verdict

With the power for clearing the air in a large room, the Blue Air Classic Pro CP7i can process twice the amount of air compared to smaller units.

Plus, it stands above most air purifiers with a comprehensive five stage cleaning process, that includes a germ killing layer.

It is also worth noting that this air purifier has Asthma & Allergy Friendly Certification, meaning it's certified to be beneficial to those who sugger from allergies and asthma.

The CP7i’s automatic mode reacts quickly to changes in air quality and its low air speed is compensated by the fact that it has two exhaust outlets.

It may be large and heavy but its wheels help in moving it around the house. Aside from its bulk, our major criticism is its three-prong grounded plug that might get in the way in an older home.

Several buyers online reported buying a second CP7i unit, probably the sincerest form of praise for a machine these days. It was praised for its quiet operation and ability to clean the air of anything from pet fur to cooking odors. On the other hand, some had problems with the air cleaner’s control app.

In any case, this is the air cleaner to get if you want comprehensive cleaning that covers everything from dust and mold to germs and odors.

It may not be pretty, but the Blue Air Classic Pro CP7i does a good job of clearing the air.

If you’re dealing with allergy symptoms, dry skin or stuffy rooms in your home, you might consider getting one of the best air purifiers or a humidifier.

But choosing between the two can seem tricky—especially if you’re unsure how they differ and which one will work best in your home.

We spoke with two air quality experts to get the inside scoop on air purifiers vs. humidifiers, and help you make an informed choice for your home.

How do they work?

Before deciding between an air purifier and a humidifier, you must understand how each appliance works.

Both appliances can improve the indoor air quality in your home, but each has a different purpose. So what exactly do we look out for?

“An air purifier cleans the air of pollution, while a humidifier adds moisture to a space," states Peter Mann, founder and CEO of Oransi. "A humidifier does not clean the air of pollution, and an air purifier does not impact relative humidity.”

Humidifiers are recommended if you live in a region with low year-round humidity, such as the Southwest. They can also be helpful in households that experience low winter humidity.

“A humidifier deals with moisture in the air,” explains Michael Rubino, founder of HomeCleanse and chair of Change the Air Foundation. “It helps add moisture to the air and increases indoor humidity levels.”

A humidifier releases water vapor and steam from a built-in water tank. The machine monitors the home’s humidity levels and adjusts its output accordingly. If the tank runs out of water, the humidifier won’t run, so it’s essential to keep an eye on the water level in the tank to prevent this from happening.

Air purifiers, on the other hand, remove contaminants from the air to improve your home’s air quality. “Based on the type of technology used, these machines help pull out particulate matter like dust, mold spores, pollen, and other particles,” says Rubino.

“Some machines also have the capability to deal with VOCs [volatile organic compounds], gases, and odors.”

An air purifier uses a fan to draw in polluted air, then uses a series of filters, including a pre-filter and a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, to remove airborne pollutants.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a HEPA filter can remove around 99.7% of airborne particles, including dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria.

Signs your home needs an air purifier

There are many reasons why you may need an air purifier. For instance, if you live in a region with low air quality, in a high-polluted city or a wildfire-prone area.

“There are many reasons to need an air purifier, such as suffering from allergies, disruptions to sleep, breathing in asthma triggers, wildfire smoke in the area, pollution from a highway or urban area, [and] installation of new flooring or furniture,” states Mann.

The latter can cause off-gassing in the form of VOCs, which can be harmful to your health if you breathe them in.

Other signs are less obvious. Rubino says an air purifier can benefit a home with water damage or visible microbial growth. He recommends watching out for signs like constant high levels of dust and musty or earthy odors, both of which signify poor indoor air quality in your home.

Allergy sufferers can benefit from installing an air purifier in their home—especially if they are allergic to dust mites or pet dander. Seasonal allergy symptoms can also decrease with the consistent use of an air purifier.

Signs your home needs a humidifier

The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50% for optimal health.

If the humidity level in your home is often less than 30%, a humidifier can help add moisture to the air and make it more comfortable.

“The best way to determine whether a humidifier is needed is to measure the relative humidity,” adds Mann. “If the humidity falls below 30% (which typically happens in the winter when the heat is running) you would benefit from a humidifier to raise the humidity level.”

Experts also suggest measuring the humidity levels in your home with a hygrometer or a smart thermostat. “Air that ‘feels’ dry [can lead] to cracked lips and skin, respiratory problems, or irritated eyes,” says Rubino.

He also recommends watching out for cracked or warping wood surfaces, hardwood floors separating, and dry-feeling air as signs your home needs a humidifier.

The humidity levels in your home can change depending on the season. It’s more common to see low humidity levels during the winter.

Can you use both?

If you struggle with both low humidity levels and poor air quality, there’s no reason not to purchase an air purifier and a humidifier for your home.

In fact, the two appliances can complement and benefit each other. “An air purifier will act as an added layer of protection for the humidifier, helping prevent microbial growth by reducing the levels of mold spores and bacteria within the air,” explains Rubino.

Mann agrees. “If the humidity levels are below 30% you should use a humidifier and an air purifier can be safely used in the same space to clean the air".

Choosing the right appliance for you

Now you know the main differences between an air purifier and a humidifier, you can decide which appliance will work best in your home.

That means considering the main issues with the air in your home. “[Both appliances] improve indoor air quality; however, the purposes are quite different,” explains Mann. “It depends on whether you need to clean the air or raise humidity levels.”

Rubino agrees. “As they serve different purposes, they’ll need to be chosen based on the situation,” he says. “If the humidity in the home is too low, a humidifier would be a tool to address this issue. An air purifier should be used if there is an indoor air quality problem. “

However, Rubino recommends installing an air purifier in most homes. “With modern homes built to be energy efficient and keep indoor air trapped tight, and more products than ever containing contaminants like VOCs, every home can benefit from an air purifier".

If you’re after the best air purifier that is attractive and won't look like an eyesore, look no further than Windmill's Air Purifier.

The Windmill Air Purifier is small and oval shaped; it's also light years ahead of the competition’s rectangular steel boxes. It's available in white, blue or finished bamboo to suit your interior style.

Although the air purifier’s three-stage cleaning process leaves out an electrostatic filter and germ killing, this should still be adequate for a large room. Plus, its automatic mode and excellent phone app allow lots of customization and remote control.

While it looks great and has an unrivaled lifetime warranty, the Windmill Air Purifier is also among the least expensive I've tested (although the bamboo version costs $100 more).

Windmill Air Purifier review: Price and availability

The Windmill Air Purifier is now available for $299 on Amazon, and $369 on The Windmill website.

At such an affordable price, the Windmill Air Purifier can make sure the air is clean in a large room without breaking the bank, although that’s for the white or blue painted models. The more sophisticated bamboo version costs $469.

The Windmill company frequently offers an extra set of HEPA filters with the order, an $80 value. If you sign up for auto-delivery, they cost $60 each.

Unlike others that stand by their air purifiers for a year or two, the Windmill covers its Air Purifier for life. That said, you will need to keep buying HEPA filters between every six months to a year.

Windmill also sells window air conditioners that range from 6,000 to 12,000 BTUs of cooling power for between $319 and $579.

Windmill Air Purifier review: Design

Design-wise, the Windmill Air Purifier is a squat, oval tower as opposed to a generic-looking rectangular sheet metal box.

In fact, it's one of the most attractive room air cleaners on the market right now.

Designed in New York City and manufactured in China, the device measures 18.6 x 16.1 x 8.9 inches and can be ordered in blue or white for $369.

I choose the $469 bamboo version that fit perfectly in my office, particularly next to my rattan garbage can. Although it weighs 21 pounds, the Windmill Air Purifier lacks wheels or a handle to help with moving it.

The prominent vertical slats are a nice design touch. And on the side, a small square opening allows room air to flow to the filter’s laser particulate measurement apparatus.

This allows the Windmill Air Purifier to keep tabs on the air quality on a second-by-second basis, to determine how hard the fan and filter have to work. Its Eco Smart mode automatically reacts to a rise in particulates in the air.

On the other hand, the Windmill Air Purifier lacks a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) sensor or the ability to use external sensors as is the case with Airthings’ Renew.

Windmill Air Purifier review: Ease of use

Setting up the Windmill Air Purifier was easy and quick, taking all of five minutes. After opening the box, I was confronted by a second box with a handle and instructions for opening it. Inside the air purifier was ready to go.

A QR code delivers set up instructions and the Air Purifier connected to my office’s Wi-Fi network on the first try.

One thing to note is the Windmill Air Purifier has a 5 foot, 11 inch, two prong cord that is suitable for most homes, but it lacks the internal cable spool found on the Molekule Air Pro to hide extra wiring.

Once set up, the Windmill Air Purifier is stable but lacks a tip-over shutoff switch; it does have a child lock, though.

The rudimentary control panel is dominated by an LED that shows the air’s status by color. While green corresponds to clean air at between 0 and 50 micrograms of up to 2.5 micron sized particles per cubic meter (µg/m³), yellow means the air is acceptable at between 51 and 100 µg/m³.

If the air purifier lights up orange, the air is unhealthy for those with asthma or other lung problems at 101 to 150 µg/m³ and red means it’s a good idea to leave the room at over 151 µg/m³.

There are also lights for a Wi-Fi connection and when the filter needs changing.

What's more, the Windmill Air Purifier has three buttons to turn the unit on or off, change its fan speed and set it to the quieter sleep mode.

Despite the absence of a remote control, the air filter’s app has no shortage of adjustments. There are versions for iOS and Android systems, although its startup is slowed by a series of app questions about you and your lifestyle.

Once running, there are controls for turning the air cleaner on and off, seeing the current air quality and the HEPA filter’s lifespan. Its other controls mirror the control panel with fan speed, automatic Eco setting and using its sleep mode.

Dig a little deeper and the app’s Settings let me have the LEDs fade out after three seconds so as not to disturb a child’s sleep — it’s easy to silence the unit’s occasional beeping.

On top of integrating with Alexa and Google Home Assistant, the Windmill Air Purifier has its own automation options. They range from time scheduling and setting sunset or sunrise as triggers to those based on air quality readings.

Windmill Air Purifier review: Performance

I set up the Windmill Air Purifier in my 25 x 12 foot office, and after going through the modes, I settled on the Eco setting for automatic operation.

The automatic setting has a low baseline fan speed and allows the Air Purifier to react to particulates in the air. The air cleaner lacks a VOC sensor, though.

Showing its range of operations, the air purifier’s Low, Medium, High and Boost modes yielded air speeds (measured 12-inches above its exhaust vent) of 0.8 miles per hour, 2.4 mph, 5.3 mph and 6.5 mph.

That’s the fastest air speed I’ve seen in recent tests although the Blueair’s CP7i’s dual 3.3 mph exhaust vents come close in overall air flow.

On the other hand, in Eco Smart mode, the purifier can be slow to react to changes in air quality. After I lit my funky smelling candle, the unit took nearly 30 seconds for the fan speed to increase enough to make a difference. I snuffed the candle out and 15 minutes later, the readings were back to the baseline.

The same was true when I sprayed five squirts of room scent and later with 10 puffs of fine pastry flour. In each test, the filter briefly showed a yellow light and then returned to green status.

Later when I was cooking bacon in a kitchen across the house, the light changed to orange and then settled down to yellow and returned to green before I was done cooking.

In its lowest fan setting, the purifier is extremely quiet at 38.4 dBA in a room that registered a background of 37.7dBA. The more boisterous settings raised the noise level to 44.7-, 59.1- and a peak of 66.0dBA in Boost mode. This is at the high end but well below the Air Pro’s 70.1 dBA.

That said, its power use was large, ranging from 3.9 watts in low mode to a peak of 68.6 watts in Boost mode.

Over a full day of normal use, if you pay the national average of 16 cents per kilowatt hour, expect that the air purifier will cost about $20.50 a year to operate. This is between the economical BioGS’s $6.58 and theAir Pro’s high of $38.40.

If you are energy conscious though, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto gave us a lower energy usage reading.

There’s little maintenance required to keep the air flowing, but you will need to vacuum or shake clean the prefilter monthly and replace the pair of HEPA filter once or twice a year.

The filter elements cost a reasonable $60 and after three weeks of continuous use, it had 93% of its lifespan remaining; it helpfully shows 171 days until a replacement will be necessary. You can sign up for automatic shipping.

Windmill Air Purifier review: Verdict

If you want style, price and function, the Windmill Air Purifier is a great choice.

It combines a powerful fan with fast air speeds and reasonably quiet operations and a reasonable energy budget.

Those who bought the Windmill Air Purifier rated it highly in online reviews. They liked its combination of style, quiet operation, ease of use and effectiveness. Its slowness in responding in auto mode was a problem that some noted.

While it lacks germ-killing and electrostatic filtering, this is the air cleaner to get if you don’t want to hide it. Windmill's design aesthetic is certainly appealing and light years ahead of the boring, square boxes this air purifier is up against.

It may not be the fastest at reacting to changes in air quality, but the combination of a lifetime warranty and 'old-house friendly', two-prong plug means that the Windmill Air Purifier should easily fit in at most homes to help improve air quality and look good while doing it.

“Air purifiers do reduce dust, but they won’t eliminate it completely,” Michael Zohouri, founder of the Retrofitters, says. “Dust is constantly being generated by everything from your clothes and dead skin cells to outdoor pollutants.

That said, there are some reasons why your air purifier isn't helping to combat persistent dust.

You're using the wrong filter

HEPA filters are the most effective at capturing fine dust particles, but some purifiers use lower-grade filters that don’t trap as much.

"A high performing air purifier can generally capture particles from 0.1 – 11.14 μm in size," Odell Liu, Chief Product Officer at Blueair says. "But, there are often larger particles that are too heavy to stay airborne and will fall to the surface/floor, which cannot be filtered through an air purifier."

Your air purifier isn't in the best spot

Placement is another key factor. If the purifier is stuck in a corner or blocked by furniture, it won’t be able to pull in air from across the room properly.

According to experts, correct placement can help to reduce dust levels, and the best place to put an air purifier is in the center of the room.

“Make sure it’s placed in an optimal location away from walls and obstructions to allow for better airflow and efficiency,” Dhau advises, “If you have a larger room or areas with higher dust accumulation, consider using multiple air purifiers or selecting one equipped with PECO (Photo Electrochemical Oxidation) technology and True HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters for enhanced coverage and improved air quality.”

You're not using your air purifier enough

You also need to run air purifiers constantly to make a noticeable difference. If they’re only switched on occasionally, dust levels will remain high.

You have the wrong size air purifier for your room

Another reason why you may still be battling dust is having the wrong sized air purifier for the room. “If you're still seeing dust in your home even after using an air purifier, it’s possible that the unit you’re using is not the right size for your space,” Dr. Jaspreet Dhau, Vice President of Research and Development at Molekule, says.

“Air purifiers are designed to work most effectively within certain room sizes, and if your purifier is too small for the area you're trying to clean, it may not be able to circulate and filter the air effectively enough to capture all the dust.” Here's how to find the right size air purifier for your room.

You need to clean your air purifier

Other reasons for seeing dust are blocked or dirty air purifier filters. “Air purifier filters need to be changed regularly,” Zohouri says. “A clogged filter won’t work efficiently, so check and replace it as recommended by the manufacturer. If dust levels are high, it may need changing more often than usual.”

What else can I do to prevent dust?

Of course, regular cleaning and floor maintenance with one of the best vacuum cleaners or best robot vacuums are essential for dust-busting.

“I’d always recommend a vacuum with a HEPA filter that traps fine particles,” Zohouri says. "Running the purifier on a higher setting when dust levels are high can also help improve air quality more quickly. For larger homes or particularly dusty rooms, using multiple purifiers may be necessary to achieve the best results."

And don't forget your soft furnishings including your drapes, blankets or rugs that can easily harbor dust.

“You should also make sure that you are putting the proper effort into cleaning soft furnishings like your rug and curtains,” Courtney Cole, interior designer at TileCloud, says. “These will act like dust traps in the home and should be cleaned as often as possible to avoid dust being stirred.”

First, measure up the size of the room to find out its square footage and cubic volume. To calculate square footage, use the formula Length x Width= Square Feet (or ft²). And for the cubic volume its Length x Width x Height = Cubic Feet (or ft³). Once you have measurements, make sure the specs of your air purifier is suitable.

2. Putting it in the wrong place

Another common mistake we often make with an air purifier is placing it in the wrong place. And if you tend to put it in a corner of the room — out of the way, experts say this is a no-no.

It’s recommended that the center of the room is the best place to put an air purifier. However, some experts state this will also depend on the shape of it. “Generally speaking, an air purifier in a room should be centrally located but not close to walls, furniture, or even curtains,” says Shu Saito, Air Filtration Specialist at All Filters LLC.

“The reason it should be placed in the middle of the room or open space is so that the air purifier gets to reach the air directly. When it is positioned against a wall or corner, this may bring blockages to airflow and impede its ability to take hold of particles flowing in the air.”

Another consideration when placing an air purifier, is to make sure there are no obstructions that can block circulation. Things like furniture within a few feet of the air purifier, so that it can draw in air from across the room more effectively. Also avoid placing it near heating vents or air returns as those will also expel or draw in air and create circulation

3. Forgetting to clean/replace the filter

Like all household appliances, maintenance is also essential to get more out of your air purifier.

You should always clean or replace clogged filters. If left unchecked, these airborne particles will build to such an extent that your air purifier will eventually struggle to pass the air through, effectively reducing its CADR and overall performance.

“Make sure to look at and replace filters as instructed so that performance is consistent,” adds Saito “Clogged or dirty filters lessen the efficiency of an air purifier. Also, ensure the air purifier is of the right size for the room you use it in. Some of these purifiers are designed for smaller rooms, and when used in larger spaces, the filtration may be incomplete. Also, avoid placing it near windows or doors where any drafts will interfere with the working of the purifier.”

What’s more, some air purifiers feature sensors to tell you when to replace your filter. This can range from indicator lights to smartphone notifications if your machine comes with app connectivity

We've tested dozens of air purifiers over the years, evaluating objective performance via the machine's CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) and noise level in decibels. But we've also tested each and every air purifier in this guide in our own homes, considering how quickly a unit can clear a smoke-filled room, and whether we enjoy the feel of the product, and any app functions.

The most capable option we've tested is the Blueair Blue Signature, but if you're on a budget, we were pleasantly surprised by the sub-$100 Oneisall Air Purifier. For our other tried and tested picks, keep reading.

Best overall

What you need to know

The Blueair Blue Signature air purifier was not only our winning performer, but looks good too. Our reviewer, Brian, was impressed with its stylish, conical design and wooden legs resembling a piece of Scandi-style furniture rather than a lacklustre air filter.

At just 17.2 inches tall and 13 pounds, it was light enough to carry around the home with ease. Perhaps what’s even more impressive is that it doubles up as a footrest or coffee table for light items, although not advisable to sit on.

But the real question really is, how well can it clean the air? Fortunately, the Blue Signature isn’t just a ‘pretty face’, and is powerful enough to tackle the different pollutants we threw its way. It’s also super easy to use and monitor via the color-coded LED bar showing the current air quality. Blue meaning the air is excellent, while green and yellow indicate moderately dirty air.

Once it was set up in Brian’s 300 square foot office, it handled everything from freshly-cut grass (from an open window), a scented candle and even a nearby gas grill firing away, where it took around five minutes to show a Blue reading.

The Blue Signature performed well when removing the flour particles, only taking one minute and a half. However, it took a little longer to remove the perfume smell at over two minutes. In any case, these were all impressive results when it came to completely filtering the air.

Blue Signature also boasts five fan settings, a four-stage odor reducing system and is a quiet operator. And while it doesn’t include an infrared remote control, the new Blue Air app is excellent.

Perhaps, the only downside is the Blue Signature lacks electrostatic filtration and any airborne germ killing ability. In addition, wheels would have been handy for easy portability around the room. However, these are minor concerns.

If you simply want a powerful air purifier to quickly get the job done, (and look stylish in your room), the Blueair Signature is a great overall pick.

Buy it if

What you need to know

If you’re after a compact air purifier that won’t break the bank, the Oneisall Air Purifier is an excellent, affordable choice. And if you have pets, it’s even better as it features a HEPA triple-layer filtration system designed to help eliminate hair, fur, and dander in the air.

Besides its small footprint, our reviewer, Dan, was impressed by the Oneisall’s simplicity to set up and use, aswell as its performance in his living room. While it has a basic spec that lacks an LCD and no complicated app to figure out, he found it super easy to use, and you literally just ‘set it and forget it’. In fact, in his review, he found it refreshing not to have yet another gadget to connect to his phone and didn’t really miss it. Another impressive thing is its quiet operation, which is always a bonus if you want a peaceful or relaxing evening.

Perhaps the only disappointment was that he expected there to be much more hair from his shedding pup trapped in its filters, given its name. However, the Oneisall still did a good trap capturing dust particles.

Despite not having all the mod cons, this budget air purifier did a good overall job, and the size is ideal for smaller spaces. If you're looking for something with a bit more going on, the Mila Air Purifier is a solid choice. It lets you fine-tune things with different filters and comes with an excellent app.

Just a heads-up, though: the Mila is bigger, noisier, and costs more than the Oneisall. So, you'll want to think about whether those extra features are worth the trade-offs for what you need.

Buy it if

The Dyson Find+Follow Purifier Cool PC3 stands out as a statement, premium purifier, with its gloss-white finish, bronze base, and the kind of build quality we expect from Dyson. It's a visual treat, with Dyson's signature curves and a design that makes it blend into modern living spaces. In this latest release, Dyson has added its new Find+Follow tech, which can locate you in the room and tailor the fan's movements to consistently deliver fresh, cool air in your direction.

But the real test is how well it cleans the air. In our closed-door test, loaded with heavy smoke and aerosols, the PC3 automatically ramped up to max power and cleared severe pollution back to a “good” rating in about 30 minutes. We saw the same responsiveness in daily use; it’s the sort of performance you want when cooking or pollen season hits and you need fast, reliable day after day.

Controlling the PC3 is very straightforward. Bluetooth app pairing took just a minute, and the Dyson app lets you dial in modes, fan speed, and air direction with precision.

Of course, it's not perfect. The price is undeniably high, and you’ll notice it if you’re simply after a fan — the cooling performance won't surpass that of dedicated cooling fans, even Dyson's own models. Best for small spaces

What you need to know

The original Shark NeverChange air purifier earned a place in this guide for a year, but it's just been replaced by this smaller model. This Compact Pro version is half the weight and much more compact than the previous version. It can tackle rooms of 250 square feet, so it's a good choice for small rooms like home offices or half-baths.

In fact, our tests found that it's especially great for kitchens. It has anti-odor tech perfect for removing cooking smells. We found that it made short work of curry, taking just 20 minutes to regulate a poor air quality rating in the mid-30s, back to a good rating in the 80s. That's 40 minutes faster than its predecessor.

It's lightweight, so you can carry it from room to room as you need, and it's relatively compact, so you can place it on a bookshelf or desk.

It's very simple to operate. It has five simple settings, and the light indicator shows either blue (clean) or red (polluted) air.

The 'NeverChange' filter is supposed to last for at least five years, which is great for cutting down on running costs and spares you the hassle of buying a replacement every few months.

However, air quality nerds might find the feedback a little lacking. If you want more information about air quality, you need something like the Mila air purifier, which provides lots of data in its app. It's also slightly louder than the original NeverChange purifier, and it goes without saying that a little purifier like this won't work for big rooms or large, open-plan homes.

Best for large rooms

What you need to know

When it comes to air purifiers, they're not the most aesthetically-pleasing, home appliances. But if you're looking for function, and mostly style, the Windmill Air Purifier ticks all the boxes.

In fact, it's the best air purifier we've ever laid eyes on, with its modern, wooden-slat designs. Perfect for blending in seamlessly with your home interiors, without looking like an eyesore.

Bear in mind, that although weighing 21 pounds, it lacks wheels or a handle to help with moving it around. Still, our tester, Brian, was impressed at how good it looked in his home office.

Aesthetics aside however, the real question is, does it perform just as well as it looks?

Luckily, it did an impressive job in our tests, and was able to filter various odors and air pollutants well. It comes with a range of operations: Low, Medium, High and Boost modes, yielding fast air speeds.

The only downside we found is the purifier can be slow to react to changes in air quality when it's on Eco Smart mode. However, it still managed to clean the air within 15 minutes.

What's more, Brian was impressed at the Windmill's extremely quiet operation, which is always handy when you're working from home.

In its lowest fan setting, the air purifier gave a quiet reading at 38.4 dBA in a room that registered a background of 37.7dBA.

The Windmill Air Purifier is also easy to set up and simple to use, which is ideal for beginners. It has three buttons to turn the unit on or off, change its fan speed and set it to the quieter sleep mode.

The control panel is dominated by an LED that shows the air’s status by color: green being clean, orange being somewhat unhealthy, and red (it's probably a good idea to leave the room!).

There are also lights to indicate a filter change and a Wi-Fi connection, which you can integrate with Alexa and Google Home Assistant.

And despite the absence of a remote control, the Windmill's app has no shortage of customized features to suit your lifestyle. In fact, this was favored above the Mila air purifier that also comes with a fantastic app.

Another thing to consider is that the Windmill Air Purifier lacks advanced settings such as germ-killing and electrostatic filtering. If these are the things you're after, you might be better off buying the Airthings Renew air purifier instead.

However, if you just want an air purifier that gets the job done well, and looks stunning too, the Windmill Air Purifier will make a lasting impression.

Quietest air purifier

What you need to know

Featuring Dyson's signature aesthetics, the HushJet Compact is the latest in a long line of premium air purifiers we've tried and tested. And like other Dyson purifiers, we find that the CADR is a little lacking compared to the likes of the Blueair Blue Signature. The HushJet is ideal for smaller spaces, but it won't work in rooms of over 200 square feet.

Onto the good stuff, though. Where the HushJet truly excels is in its whisper-quiet operation. While the Blueair is efficient at neutralizing odors in large 700-square-foot spaces, it can be audible during high-pollen days. In contrast, the HushJet registers a mere 24dB in Sleep mode, making it the superior choice for nurseries or bedside tables where even a low hum might disturb sleep.

Its 360° Electrostatic filter is remarkably responsive, ramping up power within seconds of detecting incense or cooking fumes. This filter also lasts five years, so if the idea of replacing your filter (and more importantly, having to buy a new one) every few months is off-putting to you, this up-front cost could pay off.

Speaking of costs, the Dyson is pretty expensive for what it is. Especially when the Oneisall Pet Air Purifier offers effective filtration for a fraction of the cost. Most competitors, including the top-rated Blueair and Mila models, require filter replacements every six to 12 months, which can add $50–$100 to your annual operating costs. Over a five-year period, the Dyson HushJet may actually prove more economical than its "budget" rivals.

Despite its name, "compact" is a relative term. In our tests, the HushJet (9 x 9 x 18 inches) felt slightly clunky compared to the Shark NeverChange Compact Pro, which remains the gold standard for small-space portability. If you need a device that can truly sit on a crowded desk or a narrow shelf, the Shark is the better fit.

Buy it if

Best for allergies

What you need to know

As someone who suffers from hayfever, the Mila Air Purifier was my personal favorite, and our top pick for allergies. This is thanks to Mila's seven interchangeable filters that you can easily swap out to suit your specific 'breathing' needs — and with quirky names too! For instance, The Rookie Parent, for little ones or The Basic Breather - for daily needs. Making it ideal for all members of the family.

Design-wise, the Mila is certainly eye catching, and its curvy, modern style can fit into any decor style. We found it super easy to set up, and it has a handy LCD display, remote control and a very good App. Other great features include a room presence sensor that detects when a human is in the room and adjusts it's noise accordingly. Pretty impressive if you don't want to be disturbed.

Despite its small appearance, the Mila Air Purifier, made quick work of removing various airborne particles in our medium-sized living areas. Although, in larger rooms, that run time gets extended.

The only criticism is that it can be too noisy on a high setting - but this was only when the air was bad. However, if you did want a quieter purifier, or you don't want to disturb anybody's slumber, you can opt for the quieter Blueair HealthProtect 7470i.

Essentially, the Mila is a great choice for families, allergy sufferers or anyone who simply wants a good-looking air purifier in their home.

How to choose the best air purifier

Before buying an air purifier, there are several things to first consider. To help you decide on the best air purifier for your home and needs, we break down the key factors:

How we test the best air purifiers

In-home testing

We first put our air purifiers to the home test to compare the design and ease of use of each in a real world environment. For instance, how well can it cope with smoke, dust, pet dander and lingering cooking odors.

To figure out the noise output, we used a decibel meter and ran the purifiers at a set distance of three feet away on both the lowest and highest possible fan settings. And for energy usage, we hooked up each device to an electricity usage monitor and ran it for a full 24 hours. We also took an ambient room reading to make sure that the fan noise was not being overpowered by outside noise.

Other factors we considered included overall set up, cord length and whether the model oscillates. With all of this, we were able to create a scoring system to summarize the overall experience.

Laboratory testing

If a CADR rating was not supplied by the manufacturer, we sent it off to a lab to get our own rating .

We used SGS IBR Laboratories to calculate the CADR for each pollutant by sealing the air purifier into a test chamber and then immersing with tobacco smoke, dust or pollen at a controlled rate. Each particle test would be conducted two times — once with the air purifier switched on and once where it’s powered off.

In the real world, the standard goal is to clean a full room’s worth of air in 15 minutes. So, for instance, a 300-square-foot room would need an air purifier with a CADR of 200 or so, assuming ceilings were 10 feet. That's why it's so important to get the right purifier for your room size if you want to see (or smell) the best results.

Living in the deepest country with barely a truck passing by, shopping for an air purifier for pollution-combating purposes has never been high on my radar. However, this summer has been spectacularly bad for my 10-year-old daughter Bonnie and I’s hay fever, so when I was offered the chance to review the Shark NeverCharge air purifier, I leaped at the opportunity. 

Shark makes some of the best vacuum cleaners and is a sister brand to Ninja, which makes some of the best air fryers. So, I was anticipating great things from this air purifier. Its simple, slick design certainly met all my expectations, and its excellent performance and techy features were also consistent with my past experiences testing SharkNinja products. 

Read on to discover whether the Shark NeverChange should be on your radar, and if it’s worthy of our best air purifiers hotlist. 

Shark NeverChange Air Purifier review: Price and availability

The Shark NeverChange (model HP152) air purifier has a recommended retail price of $249.99 on the brand’s own website, but at the time of writing Shark was offering a $50 discount, making it $199.99. It’s just as well the main filter is designed to last a long time because the replacement Anti-Allergen True HEPA Filter is $89.95. Ouch!

If you want the convenience of remote-control operation, it’ll set you back an extra $14.99 – seems a bit churlish that the remote isn’t included. The replacement odor neutralizer cartridges are $21.99 for two, and I predict most people won’t bother once the solo cartridge included runs out of smelliness.

Those with homes boasting bigger rooms (up to 1400sq ft), might prefer the Shark NeverChange Max, but it costs a fair whack more at $329.99. I tested the equivalent UK model, which retails at £249.99. Over here it is called the Shark NeverChange5 (HP150UK) and it is white, not gray like the US version, but otherwise it’s essentially the same beast in design and specification.

Shark NeverChange Air Purifier review: Design

The main USP of this model is its NeverChange filter, which will last up to five years (if used at max speed for 12 hours a day in a 300sq ft room). For air purifier veterans who are tired of constant filter purchasing, this will undoubtedly feel like a breath of fresh air (sorry).  Another cool point of difference and a great way to get more out of your air purifier is the built-in odor-neutralizing cartridges, which aim to make your purified home smell clean and fresh, too.

The Shark NeverChange air purifier isn’t tiny, but its compact design will sit neatly enough on countertops and sideboards. Just shy of 15 inches high, it has a similar look to an air fryer (those Ninja genes coming through?) and although I wouldn’t say it’s a thing of beauty, it certainly didn’t blight my décor. 

Arriving well-protected in eco-friendly packaging, getting set up was a breeze. The quick start guide was easy to follow. All I needed to do was turn it upside down and remove the HEPA filter from the base, take it out of its plastic bag and replace. The anti-odor cartridge was in a can, like tinned tuna, so I just popped the lid and inserted it into the top of the Shark NeverChange. 

After removing the protective sticker from the control panel, I found a suitable location in the corner of our open-plan kitchen (three inches away from walls and objects) and powered it up. Weighing in at 7.2lb, this isn’t a heavy appliance, but it would benefit from a carry handle for moving from room-to-room.

Shark NeverChange Air Purifier review: How it works

The instructions, which are downloadable via a QR Code, recommend using the Shark NeverChange on Auto Mode to “ensure clean air confidence” and for optimal filter life. In Auto Mode the fans speeds adjust automatically, speeding up when poorer air quality is detected and then powering back down when the problem has been resolved. 

If you leave it in Auto Mode, the Shark NeverChange will also turn off if the air status symbol has stayed at 100% for five minutes, which is good news for electricity use. Not that air purifiers are huge energy guzzlers – I don’t have precise stats for this model, but an air purifier of this size shouldn’t cost more than 15 cents a day to run.

The front display provides the air quality reading and has an LED color ring, which offers a clear visual guide to understanding air quality – blue is Good (85-100% means 0-25 particles have been detected), Fair is an orange ring (70-84%/26-80 particles) and Red is classified as Poor (0-69%, 81-430+ particles). 

The touch controls on the top are also pretty easy to follow. You can manually adjust the fan speed, with five settings that range from quiet to maximum. There’s an Air Info button that allows you to switch between the air purification display options. I generally left it on the main display screen that gives a percentage reading of the overall air quality. The other three displays show different readings according to particulate size – PM1 is ultra-fine allergens, PM2.5 is larger particles, including smoke, and PM10-sized particles such as dust and pollen. 

Other options on the control menu include setting a timer (up to 12 hours), adjusting the brightness and a Dust Filter Life button that tells you when to clean the two side filters. You can also activate a child lock, which would be useful if you were using it in a nursery, and you can turn off the audible beep when pressing buttons. I love this latter consideration because I am massively noise intolerant and hate the intrusion of bleepy tech in my life. 

The two mesh filters in the side protect the main HEPA filter from being prematurely clogged by bigger particulates, dog hair and dirt and it’s one of the reasons the filter in the Shark NeverChange can last for up to five years. According to Shark, this HEPA filter has a superior carbon layer that surpasses regulations and captures 99.98% of air particles, making it a great option for anyone who is really serious about the air quality in their home. 

Shark NeverChange Air Purifier review: Performance

Following Shark’s advice, I started by testing the NeverChange in the busiest room in our home, the kitchen-diner. Measuring 678sq ft, the space exceeds the 650sq ft max recommended room size for this model, so I decided to run it on the highest power setting for an hour or two just to get things going. 

When I first turned it on, the Shark NeverChange read 97%, then briefly went down to 92% before settling on 98% for a while. It took about an hour to reach 99-100%. I then switched to Auto Mode, where it mainly stayed in the high 90s, except if I was cooking. Despite having a very good (I thought) and powerful extractor fan that was bought to suit the room size, the Shark NeverChange always knew when I was cooking, both on the hob and air fryer, and would power up to Max to help clear the air. 

While I’m not worried about urban pollution in our home, it is surrounded by farmland, so dust and pollen are rife, especially during harvest, which, by fluke, was when I trialed the Shark NeverChange. I am definitely allergic to oil seed pollen (we have acres of the stuff all around us), and the doctor thinks Bonnie may also struggle with the many well-established fir trees in our garden, which produce a lot of pollen in spring and early summer. She generally wakes up with a streaming nose and itchy eyes at this time of year. 

For this reason, my next testing spot was her bedroom, which is roughly 175sq ft. Again, the reading was in the 90s (blue LED ring), which is good. It started at 93% but quickly ramped up to 97%, taking about two hours to reach 100%. In Auto Mode it mainly stays in the second power setting so, as she’s a light sleeper, I was pleased I have the option to power it right down to the lowest setting overnight. My decibel meter App recorded the lowest setting at 38 dB(a), which is commensurate with a ‘quiet rural area’. In the highest power setting it recorded 62 dB(a), which is similar to normal conversation and not terribly loud, but you wouldn’t want it on Max power overnight, unless you really had to.  You can also turn the LED displays off completely, which is great for eliminating blue light in the bedroom.

I left the Shark NeverChange in Bonnie’s bedroom for a week and although the air quality percentage never dropped below 93% (admittedly I didn’t watch it through the night), she did seem to wake up less snuffly and without the sneezing fits we’d become used to at breakfast. My husband was oblivious to the presence of the Shark NeverChange in her bedroom (despite reading with her every night!) but he commented that her allergies seemed to be much better lately, so it wasn’t just my imagination. 

My final testing session was in our snug, which is a windowless TV room with double glazed doors that open into the kitchen. Being small and windowless, and very often full of dogs (we had two of our own and another on holiday while testing), it’s not the most fragrant of rooms so I thought it would be a good way to assess the odor neutralizer function of the Shark NeverChange. I plugged it in, and left it on Auto Mode overnight and when I opened the door in the morning, I definitely noticed the air was fresher and smelt nice. Not amazing, it’s not like a fragrant bouquet of flowers or any discernible scent I could identify but the smell is pleasant enough, and certainly an improvement on the usual damp dog whiff in there. 

During the two weeks I trialled the Shark NeverChange, the only time the air quality dropped out of the Good, blue light ring, status was when cooking, and then it was only just in the orange. Then it would ramp up the power automatically until the blue status ring returned. 

My husband also wafted some burnt cardboard near it to emulate a smoking fire, and it went absolutely nuts – powering right up to Max and the air status immediately dropped to 0% and the red light ring glowed. It was a reassuring experiment to know that we would be protected from pollutants if there were ever wild fires in the area, or some kind of mad smog situation. Both unlikely scenarios but I’m thinking the Shark NeverChange may well prove useful when the farmer is spreading the fields around us in dung come Fall.  

I didn’t need to clean the two pull-out mesh filters during the testing period, but the process is a simple case of vacuuming them on the lowest setting. If they get very blocked, they should be washed under the tap and thoroughly dried before slotting back in. Apparently, the LED ring will pulse red when the filters need cleaning. The large HEPA filter inside the appliance cannot be cleaned but Shark recommends you vacuum inside where it sits (with the filter removed) every two months or so.

Shark NeverChange air purifier: Comparison

The Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is a little bigger and heavier but similar priced and our reviewer gave it a fairly glowing report. Both models have Auto/eco modes and a timer but the Coway’s filters are expensive and need to be replaced once a year so on-going costs are a consideration.

Although the Shark NeverChange does push out cool air when filtering, I wouldn’t go so far as to say it could be used to cool your home on a hot summer’s day. To be fair, this is hard to prove either way given that Britain’s summer has been so cold and wet. This review was written in July with the heating on! But if you do want cooling, perhaps consider an air purifier/fan combo like the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S or, if you have very deep pockets, the Dyson Purifier HP07, which also heats.

If I were buying an air purifier for our four-bedroom Victorian home, which is mainly open-plan downstairs, I’d be tempted to upgrade to the Shark NeverChange Max, as it boasts all the same features but can accommodate rooms twice the size. 

Shark NeverChange Air Purifier: Verdict

Technically the Shark NeverChange should be called the Shark RarelyChange as the main filter will eventually need to be replaced but up to five years is good innings by anyone’s count. 

Although I don’t live in a busy urban environment, I could still appreciate the benefits of this punchy little air purifier. I’m convinced it relieved my daughter’s allergy suffering, and it definitely made the room it was in noticeably fresher. If I did live in NYC, or anywhere that was seriously polluted, I’d probably want one for every room, rather than choose who got to breathe fresh air while they slept or lug it around the place day and night.

Small, easy to hide or hang on a wall, the AirThings Renew air filter combines a four-stage purification process with an excellent app, online portal and the company’s View Plus desktop console. It’s quiet and uses less electricity than competitors, but has a low filtered air flow rate, replacement filters that cost double what the competition charges and its warranty lasts only a year. 

Still, its minimalist design and fabric covering allow the Renew to do a trick that few of the best air purifiers can: hide in plain sight while clearing the air. But how well does it work? I tested the AirThings Renew for a few weeks to find out.

Airthings Renew air purifier review: Price and availability

Available at the Airthings Web site and Amazon, the Renew air purifier costs $400 and is recommended for rooms up to 525 square feet. The company bundles the air purifier with its View Plus sensors and tabletop console for $525, a $175 savings. 

Renew’s replacement filters with the activated carbon element cost $70 each, about double what others charge. Airthings doesn’t have a plan for the periodic purchase and delivery of filters. 

Airthings Renew air purifier review: Design

Designed and engineered in Norway, Renew has a Scandinavian minimalist look that should fit into just about any room. Manufactured in China the rectangular air filter looks great in a corner or hanging from a wall.

At 16.3 x 16.1 x 6.7 inches, it’s more than 50 percent smaller than the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto – one of our favorite air purifiers – and positively tiny next to Dreo Air Purifer Tower Fan MC710S. Weighing 11.9 pounds, the Renew is light enough to be carried from room to room as needed with its fabric strap.

Rather than the typical all-plastic case, the gray Renew air purifier has a neutral fabric covering the air inlet. Happily, its power cord can be adjusted to the right length by coiling the excess in a hidden compartment. 

Along the top is a long narrow display that shows whether Renew is on or off and a color coded LED for the room’s particulate level. It glows red when the air quality is poor with over 25 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3) and yellow when it’s better but problematic at between 10 and 25 μg/m3. No surprise, a green light means the air is healthy at a level of less than 10 μg/m3. This amount of detail is less precise than Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier’s six color display, which tops out at 999 μg/m3.

The unit has adjustments for setting the filter for Auto, Boost or Silent operations as well as “+” and “-” keys for the five fan speeds. The unit’s bar graph fills up as the fan speed increases.

Renew raises the bar with minute-by-minute monitoring and exacting control. In addition to the Airthings app, Renew works with the company’s Web portal and View Plus desktop sensor and display. Because it fits into the Airthings ecosystem, Renew can be voice-controlled with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant. 

Airthings Renew air purifier review: How it works

The Renew filter brings room air in from the front and blows cleaned air out the top grill. It has neither louvers for aiming the flow nor oscillates the way the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S can.

While other air filters have a three-stage process to clean the air, the Renew system adds a fabric pre-filter. From there, the air flows through a mesh to remove large particulates and on to the unit’s H13 HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Area) filter, which is able to block 99.97 percent of particles that are 0.3 micron or larger, it stops pollen, mold spores, bacteria and dust, according to the company.

The final step is a separate activated charcoal element. This can reduce odors from pets, cooking and even household organic solvents.

Designed to cover up to 525 square feet, Renew can only exchange the air in a room of this size twice an hour. It’s best for smaller rooms of about 210 square feet, where it can exchange the air a more lung-friendly five times an hour. 

Airthings Renew air purifier review: Performance

After removing Renew’s plastic wrapping, I plugged the cord into the unit and wrapped the excess around the internal spool and hid it behind the snap-on cover. Unlike others, Renew can sit up against a wall or even mounted on it with the included hook.

It’s easiest to just press the Auto button to have the air filter determine how hard it needs to work but the app provides more control. 

Once running, the Renew had a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 140 cubic feet per minute (CFM) for smoke. That’s less than half the filtered air flow of the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto’s 353 CFM. AirThings is currently testing Renew for its CADR with pollen and dust; we will update this review when we have those figures.

It worked in my 25 x 12 feet office over three weeks, while nearby radiators were being scraped and painted. In Automatic mode, it noticeably reduced the dust that coated the furniture prior to using it. The particulate level rose to 32 μg/m3 (in the red zone) a couple of times but quickly returned to the 1-2 μg/m3 range with a green light. 

While it was running at its lowest setting, Renew barely raised a breeze with an air speed of 1.2 miles per hour at 36 inches. That rose to 2.7 mph at full blast. This pales in comparison to the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S’s 6.8 mph at its top setting. 

It was among the quietest air cleaners around with a noise level of 38.6dBA measured 36 inches from the unit’s grill in a room with a background noise level of 36.8BA. By contrast, the Dreo MC710S was much louder at 41.0dBA in the same room. At its highest setting, the Renew’s 55.1dBA was on a par with the MC710S’s 55.0dBA, which moved more air.

Renew is a power miser that used 2.4 watts in low and 1.3 watts at idle. If it runs 24/7, it should cost about $3.15 a year to operate if you pay the national average of 15 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity. By contrast, the Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier has estimated annual costs of $5.10.

It doesn’t need much looking after. The company suggests vacuuming the outer fabric prefilter, washing the inner mesh prefilter periodically and changing the HEPA filter every six months; the app shows its status. It used up 4 percent of its capacity over my two week trial and takes a minute to change. However, at $70 it’s among the most expensive replacement filters and Airthings won’t automatically send you new ones.  

Renew has a one-year warranty, equivalent to that of the Blueair Blue Pure 211+. By comparison, Wyze and Clorox include five- and three-year warranties with their air filters.

Airthings Renew air purifier review: Verdict

While other air purifiers are bulky, loud and hard to hide, the AirThings Renew air filter not only can clean a moderate sized room’s air with a four-stage process but is virtually invisible. It is the rare air cleaner that can be wall-mounted and offers a variety of ways to monitor and control its air cleaning action. Here, small means low air flow, with the Renew moving about half the filtered air as competitors, although it uses a lot less electricity to do it. However, its replacement filters cost double what the competition charges and its warranty lasts only a year. 

At $400, Renew is a more expensive alternative to the $280 Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto, which filters more than twice the amount of air. Still, Renew can find a place in a small to mid-sized room and is the rare air filter that blends into the background.

If you’re looking to clear the air in a large room, Dreo’s Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S can do the trick with a powerful fan, HEPA filter and the ability to oscillate back and forth — sort of like a fan and air purifier in one, or a less expensive version of a Dyson Air Purifier TP07. 

However, the Dreo is huge, it lacks charcoal filtration to remove odors and it has a very low CADR rate, making it less effective at cleaning the air in your room than some of the best air purifiers we’ve tested. But, this two-in-one device may be a good fit for your home, so check out the rest of our Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan review to see if it can make breathing a little easier.

Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S review: Price and availability

The Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan is available for $300 at Amazon or the Dreo Web site, although at the moment, there’s a $280 special price. That’s roughly twice the price of the Wi-Fi enabled Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier and $100 more than the company’s Macro Max S Air Purifier, both of which delivered more filtered air. 

Its replacement HEPA filters cost $40. The company also sells a wide variety of air purifiers, fans, heaters and small kitchen appliances.

Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S review: Design

For good and bad, the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S looks more like a rocket that Elon Musk might dream up than a device to clean your air.

Its silver and black design takes up a modest 11.0 x 11.0 inches of floor space but is 46.5 inches tall, making it one of the largest air cleaners in its class. It’s also a bit on the heavy side, weighing 18 pounds. It does have a built-in handle, but it might have benefited from wheels to ease getting it from room to room. 

Made by Changsha Hesung Innovation Limited, the Dreo air cleaner has been designed around two brushless DC motors: one for pulling dirty room air in from the bottom, running it through filters and the other to oscillate the entire unit up to 60-degrees right and left. This is plenty to spread the cleaned air throughout a big room while adding a level of cooling.

Designed for rooms of between 150 and 300 square feet, the filter element is undersized with the air flow augmented by using one of the unit’s 12 fan settings. On the downside, using the fan bypasses the filter, making its output a mix of filtered and unfiltered air. 

Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S review: How it works

The MC710S works by routing the room’s air through a foam prefilter to remove large particulates that might prematurely clog the High Efficiency Particulate Area (HEPA) filter. It can remove up to 99.97 percent of particles that are 0.3 micron or larger, which includes bacteria, pollen and smoke. It, however, lacks an activated charcoal filter to remove organic vapors or smells or any technique to sterilize the air. 

With an air delivery rating of 1,558 cubic feet per minute (CFM) at full blast, the Air Purifier Tower Fan blows air horizontally across a room. But raw air flow is only half the story because of the filter’s low Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) rate of 60 CFM. The Dreo Air Tower's CADR rating is a small fraction of the filtered air output of our favorite Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto's 353 CFM(smoke), 347 (dust) and 380 (pollen).

The Air Purifier Tower Fan is the rare air cleaner with three different ways to control it, starting with the device’s display and control panel. The screen shows the air quality based on an internal laser sensor that glows blue or green when the air is excellent or of moderate quality, while orange corresponds to a poor rating. Red means unhealthy but these color codes don’t explicitly correspond to ranges of particulate levels.

The touch interface on top is for setting up the air cleaner’s Wi-Fi connection, using Manual or Automatic operation as well as choosing among displaying the particulate level, fan level, temperature and how much life is left on the filter. It’s easy to set the fan’s auto shutoff timer and adjust parameters with the “+” and “-” keys. Unlike others, it will remember the previous setting if it’s unplugged, perfect for moving it from room to room.

There’s also a small remote control that had a range of about 30 feet and came with the needed CR2025 button battery.

The Dreo app brings it all together; the main screen shows a logo of the fan with the current settings and air quality, temperature as well as any set schedules. Additional settings for such things as oscillation, air quality, and temperature can be found in submenus. At the bottom is a measure of the air filter’s remaining life. The air purifier responded nearly instantly to commands from the app, and you can also control it via Alexa or Google Assistant.

All the filtration action is in the Home tab, while the Notifications tab oddly has cooking recipes, the Discover tab is for other Dreo products and the Profile section is for Dreo orders and changing things like the time zone. That said, the app’s Settings has a way for others with the Dreo app to share control, although it might lead to a family dispute. 

Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S review: Performance

The fan arrived in a huge box, nearly ready to go. All I had to do was unwrap it and set it up; Dreo recommends leaving at least 15 inches between the Air Purifier Tower Fan and the wall. You’ll need to periodically clean the prefilter and replace the HEPA filter about every six months. I used up 11 percent of its filtering capacity over three weeks of a particularly pollen-laden spring. 

Its two-prong plug has a built in 2.5 amp fuse to prevent overloads, although it doesn’t use nearly that much power. It worked well in my 300-square foot office set to automatic, where it ran in the background with a mild breeze but once the particle counter rose to 38 particles per cubic meter, the LED changed to orange briefly as the fan went into overdrive. It quickly settled down after a few seconds. Overall, it cleaned the air but lacking an activated carbon layer it could do nothing to counteract the smell of cooking salmon in the nearby kitchen. 

Its horizontal output blasted a 6.7-mile per hour gust at the top setting, measured 36 inches from the exhaust grill. That’s between the weaker Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier’s 4.9 mph and the Wyze Air Purifier’s stronger 7.8 mph wind. The lowest of the 12 different fan levels yielded a 1.4 mph gentle wind.

It consumed 44.2 watts of power at its highest setting, 14.3 watts at its lowest and 1.4 watts at idle. If the tower fan runs 24/7 in Automatic mode, it might cost about $10.30 to operate, assuming that you pay the national average of 15 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity. That’s double the cost of the Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier.

Considering the amount of air being moved around, the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S is surprisingly quiet. Measured 36 inches from its outlet, I recorded 55.0 dBA of noise at full blast in a room with a background level of 37.3dBA. That’s significantly quieter than the Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier’s 58.7dBA.

While it is well-made and sturdy, the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S comes with only a one-year warranty, versus five years of coverage from Wyze air filtration systems. Figure that you’ll need to get a $40 HEPA filter twice a year. Dreo doesn’t have an automatic replacement program for the filter elements. 

Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S review: Verdict

One of the largest home air filters on the market, Dreo’s Air Purifier Tower Fan is ironically less than meets the eye, as it’s less effective at filtering the air than many smaller and less expensive air purifiers. It also lacks an activated carbon filtering stage to get rid of odors and its warranty lasts for only a year. 

Still, it could have a place in a home where you don’t want both a fan and an air purifier cluttering up the place. In fact, it worked well in delaying turning on the air conditioning in my office by about two weeks. The Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S is better as a high volume room fan than for filtering air. I just wish it was smaller.

While my kitchen was being torn apart and rebuilt, there was no shortage of dust floating around the house, and I was having some trouble breathing; that is, until I fired up the Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier. 

Able to remove everything from dust and soot to odd smells and allergens, the Clorox air cleaner’s three stage HEPA filtration system quietly works in automatic mode by sensing the amount of cleaning needed and adjusting its operation. To see if it was worthy of inclusion on our list of the best air purifiers, I put it to the test for two weeks under some pretty harsh conditions. Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier review: Price and availability

The Clorox air purifier I reviewed (model 11010) is made for rooms up to 1,500 square feet, and costs $129. A similar “smart” model that’s Wi-Fi connected and works with Alexa costs $166.

A model for rooms up to 1,000 square feet (10030) costs $99; the Wi-Fi-connected version of this model sells for $112.

Last, a model for small rooms (up to 200 square feet) costs $49, with the Wi-Fi-enabled model selling for $69.

Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier review: Design

At 19 x 10 x 10 inches (HxWxD), the white and black air purifier may look large at first but is actually petite compared to the 21 x 11.2 x 11.2 inch Dreo Macro Max S Air Purifier. Its 11.6-pound weight means it’s easy to carry from room to room as needed. 

Its two-part display starts with a square touchscreen on top inside the system’s output louvers that shows its fan setting or automatic operation as well as the current particulate level. It has a timer for automatically turning it off; if the unit is tipped over by a pet or small child, it automatically turns off.

The second part is the vertical LED bar up front that shows at a glance the level of 2.5-micron particulates per cubic meter in the input air with six different color-coded levels. Green stands for a safe — 0 to 12 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) — while yellow is for between 13 and 35 µg/m3 and orange for 36 to 55 µg/m3.

Red and purple correspond to unhealthy air at between 56 and 150 and 151 to 250 µg/m3, and maroon shows that the particle count has risen to between 251 and 999 µg/m3, meaning that it’s a good idea to leave the room.

Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier review: How it works

The unit’s fan pulls the room’s dirty air in from its periphery and forces it through the device’s three-stage filtration process. Its prefilter pulls out large particles, followed by the unit’s High Efficiency Particulate Area (HEPA) filter. Capable of removing up to 99.97 percent of particulate matter as small as 0.1 micron, it can trap common bacteria, pollen, viruses and all sorts of things you shouldn’t be breathing. The final stage is an activated carbon filter that absorbs everything from cooking odors to smoke to volatile organic compounds. 

Able to continuously clean the air in a room of up to 1,500 square feet, the Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier is recommended to cover up to 320 square feet, where it can exchange the air five times an hour. I used it in my slightly smaller 25 x 12 foot office over the course of a month, where it worked well, cutting the dust level significantly during my kitchen rebuild and beyond.

Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier review: Performance

Everything came set up, ready to filter the air. All I had to do was plug in the unit’s AC adapter, the air purifier’s power port, press the power button and set the main screen to Automatic mode. While the dust in the nearby kitchen seemed to come out in clouds, the Clorox air filter kept my work area free of dust. While it was quiet and sedate for most of the time, it occasionally would go at full blast when the renovations were particularly intense and grubby, like when the old tile floor was being broken up. 

Most of the time, the LED glowed green but several times hit yellow and orange. Surprisingly, the unit’s HEPA filter never clogged up; there’s a warning light for when it’s time to change it. Clorox does suggest wiping or vacuuming the device’s exterior monthly.

The proof of an air filter’s performance is its Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), a measure of the device’s cleaned air flow. At between 206 cubic feet per minute (CFM) for smoke to 232 CFM for pollen, it’s half the Wyze Air Purifier’s 464 cubic meters per hour, which can clear the air in a larger room.

Able to create a 4.9 mile per hour (mph) vertical breeze of cleaned air, measured 36 inches from the vent, the Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier moves a lot of air. That said, it fell short of the 7.6 mph and 6.8 mph that the Wyze Air Purifier and Dreo Max S were capable of, making the Clorox device second best for all-out air flow.

While it’s running at its lowest setting, the Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier was barely noticeable at 41.0dBA of fan noise at 36 inches; the room had a background noise level of 39.1dBA. At full blast, that rose to 36.1 watts and an annoying 58.7dBA.

At its lowest setting, it used 3.6 watts of energy; that adds up to a $5.10 a year estimate of electricity costs, or about one third less than the Dreo Macro Max S. This assumes it’s running all day and night in auto mode and you pay the national average of 15 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity.

Unlike the five-year warranty that comes with the Wyze and Dreo air filters, Clorox covers the air cleaner for three years. Plan on needing a new HEPA filter every six months or so, depending on how dirty your air is. While others, like Wyze, sell different filters for solvents, pollen and smoke, Clorox has one $60 all-purpose filter for its Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier. Others sell replacement filters for $35 to $50. Sadly, there’s no way to automatically order replacements on a periodic basis from Clorox.

Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier: Verdict

The Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier worked well for two weeks of demolition and construction as well as a month after that under less strenuous circumstances. In automatic mode, I didn’t need to dust the room as often, which for me is as close to magic as it gets. 

On the downside, the 11010 version I used to clean the air at home was a basic model that lacks a remote control or the ability to connect via Wi-Fi; it costs $150. The $170 11011 model adds Wi-Fi but no app, although it can be controlled via several Alexa commands. It’s on a par with the $170 Wyze Air Purifier and much less expensive than the more powerful $220 Dreo Max S air filter. Both have Wi-Fi and apps for monitoring and operating the filters. 

It may not be the most powerful HEPA air filter or have a phone app to control it, but the Clorox Large Room True HEPA Air Purifier is like a breath of fresh air. Quiet and inexpensive, it’s a clean air winner for me.

The Coway Airmega's eco mode automates fan speed according to the air quality level. This proved crucial during an air quality crisis in New York City in June. Wildfire smoke had floated down from Canada and blanketed the city in an orange haze straight out of a post-apocalyptic movie. 

At one point, I opened my front door for perhaps 30 seconds and the Coway AirMega went on red alert. It cleared out the smoke, and I was fortunate not to experience the watering eyes, sneezing and headaches that many others suffered.

Simply open up the case, unfold the stand and pray you didn’t leave the remote at home. You can use the touchscreen if that’s the case, but what good is a TV if you have to stay within arm’s reach all the time?

The StanbyME Go has everything you’d expect from a modern smart TV, except the ability to tune into traditional broadcast signals. Not that it matters when you have a full suite of streaming apps, HDMI input, a web browser and three hours of battery life. Innovation Award: Fairphone 5

The Fairphone 5 is not designed to beat the iPhone 15 or Galaxy S24. Fairphone is all about offering fair wages to people involved in making the devices, and ensuring manufacturing relies on as many ethically sourced materials as possible — with an emphasis on recycled and sustainable options.

From a consumer standpoint you do get a drop in hardware compared to the latest flagships. But the “fair” part of Fairphone applies to you, too, so what you lose in terms of raw hardware you get back in better repairability and software support that other phone makers couldn’t dream of. Full Android support up to Android 18, and further software support to at least 2031 — perhaps even extending to 2033. If you still have the phone by then, of course.

Other phone makers are only just starting to take sustainability and long-term phone support seriously, but they’re going to have to seriously step up their game if they want to try outdo Fairphone. — Tom Pritchard

Best of Computing: Lenovo Legion 9i gaming laptop 

We tend to see a lot of gaming laptops, and the Lenovo Legion 9i has already found its place on my letter to Santa. That’s because of how incredible this machine really is. Not only is there a svelte carbon fiber design, which Lenovo says makes the look of each Legion 9i unique, there is a lot of great hardware under the hood. Plus a liquid cooling system, which hasn’t been done in a 16-inch gaming laptop before.

The Legion 9i runs from a 13th generation Intel Core i9-13980HX CPU paired with a Nvidia GeForce RTA 4090 laptop GPU - with support for up to 64GB of RAM and 2TB of storage. Suddenly that liquid cooling system doesn’t seem like such a wild idea, because this laptop could easily be a powerhouse that needs to take advantage of that extra cooling. Plus, you get a sharp and colorful 16-inch 3.2K mini-LED display. 

There’s a lot going for the Legion 9i, especially with support for the AR Legion Glasses. Frankly, we can not wait to review it. — Tom Pritchard

Best Phone: Honor Magic V2

IFA's not known as a smartphone show, but Honor's chosen this event as the ideal platform to announce the global launch of its Magic V2 foldable. And what a foldable it is.

The Magic V2 offers larger displays inside and out than the obvious comparable models from Samsung and Google, but remains slimmer and lighter than both. It's also got a larger battery using cutting-edge silicon-carbon technology and upgraded camera sensors befitting a flagship phone. And if the current Honor Magic Vs is anything to go by, it'll be quite a bit cheaper than a Samsung or Google foldable in the markets where it's available.

We'll want to spend more time testing the Magic V2 before adding it to our best foldable phones list. But we're very excited for what this kind of competition to the Galaxy Z Fold 5's dominance will mean for foldable buyers in the near future. — Richard Priday

Best of TV: TCL X955 QD mini-LED TV 

TCL’s latest TV reveal could put it in the running for our list of the best TVs. Not only does the TCL X955 feature a QD mini-LED panel, and gargantuan 85- and 98-inch sizing options, TCL claims that this beast will have over 5,000 local dimming zones and the ability to output 5,000 nits of HDR brightness. Typically it’s rare for TVs to exceed 2,000 nits, so this is a very big deal.

Why does that matter? The more control there is over the TV’s light the better the picture quality you’re going to get. The X955 also packs a 4.2.2 channel speaker system, with Dolby Atmos and a 160w power output, alongside a 144Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision and AMD’s Freesync Premium Pro.

We don’t know about U.S. Availability, or even how much the TCL X995 will cost, but it goes without saying that it’s not going to be cheap. But with display tech like that, you know you’re paying for something special. — Tom Pritchard

Best of Audio: JBL Authentics smart speaker 

With wireless smarts running to both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, the new JBL Authentics smart speaker series was the standout audio showcase at IFA 2023. The new series integrates both Alexa and Google voice assistants and marries JBL’s sound prowess to a retro design — inspired by the legendary JBL L 100 stereo speakers from the 1970s.

Three Authentics models each offer different cabinet sizes and power outputs. Whether you opt for the flagship 500, portable 300 with 8-hour battery life, or the compact 200, each speaker is a full music system that can be integrated with the other model in the series in multi-room setups. And you can even pair two of the same speakers together for traditional stereo sound with the speakers spaced several meters apart.

Hearing the sound blast out of each of the individual speakers was impressive, even though the exhibition space was marred by high levels of ambient noise. Each model made itself heard and bass levels cut through the noise. But it was the Authentics 500 with Dolby Atmos support that impressed the most thanks to the 270W power output and 6.5-inch down-firing subwoofer which stole the show. — Lee Dunkley 

Best of Gaming — Lenovo Legion Go

There’s going to be no shortage of handheld gaming PCs in the future, but they’re going to have a hard time living up to the Lenovo Legion Go. This handheld has “Steam Deck killer” written all over it, with an impressive set of hardware specs, a screen like no other and hardware that should give Valve pause for concern.

That screen is an 8.8-inch touch-enabled panel capable of QHD+ resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. On top of that you have up to 1TB of storage, 16GB of RAM, and up to an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip. Not to mention 2 USB-C ports, a microSD card slot, headphone jack and a nice big kickstand.

Because the Legion Go runs a full version of Windows 11, with all the features and capabilities the operating system offers, there are two mouse options to make up for the analogue sticks’ shortcomings. That includes a trackpad and an “FPS Mode” that turns your right controller into an actual mouse for that more refined PC gaming aiming experience. — Tom Pritchard

Best robot: Ecovacs AirBot Z2 

Robots in the home are nothing new, but the idea that there are robotic air purifiers is blowing my mind a little bit. And products like the Ecovacs AirBot Z2 do exist, with the ability to freely roam around your home like a miniature Dalek hell-bent on exterminating air pollution.

Ecovacs claims that this bot has the ability to manage the air in “five dimensions”, which in layman's terms means it has 5 specific air-purifying functions. That includes removing pollutants, antibacterial effects, fog-free humidification, permanent air freshening and a special function for filtering out both pet hair and odors.

The only real downside is that it doesn’t vacuum as it roams around your house.  — Tom Pritchard

Of all the appliances in my home that could be roboticized, I never considered one of them could be an air purifier. And yet, Ecovacs has not only done this with the Airbot Z1, it’s brought a second generation model to show off at IFA 2023.

The AirBot Z2 is a self-navigating robot, able to navigate your home autonomously - much like the best robot vacuums. Thereby ending the age-old question of where to place your air purifier for the best results. It’s just a shame the AirBot Z2 doesn’t also have a vacuum cleaner, because it could easily take care of two jobs at the same time.

According to Ecovacs this ‘bot can purify air with a “5-stage Deep Rejuvenation System”, which is capable of “active air management in five dimensions”. I’m not sure Ecovacs is using dimensions in the way I would, but apparently this means the AirBot Z2 is capable of treating the air in a bunch of different ways.

This includes removing air pollutants, a permanent antibacterial effect, fog-free air humidification, permanent air freshening and all while offering a noticeable breeze. There’s also a hair removal and odor filtering function that’s been specifically designed for homes with animals. So if you have a dog that sheds far too much, just like mine, this could prove very useful.

Seriously, there’s a layer of hair on every surface and no amount of cleaning will solve the problem. I could really use a robot to help reduce the amount of time I need to spend with a lint roller.

Plus, based on the display we saw at IFA, the robot shouldn’t have issues navigating around your pets. It certainly didn’t have any problems moving around the (toy) cats that were deliberately sitting in its path.

The downside here is there’s no word on when this robot will be available outside of China, or how much it will cost. However, The Ambient has been tipped off to the fact this ‘bot could make an appearance at CES in January, meaning you may find it cleaning up the air in your homes very soon.

At a time when the world is getting ever more polluted — especially in New York — air purifiers are now good purchases. But they aren't cheap. Enter the Amazon Prime Day deals, which can take pricey purifiers and make them a bit of a bargain. 

Case in point, you can get the Blueair Advanced Air Purifier 7470i for $288 at Amazon.  The deal cuts the Blueair's price by 52% from $599; that’s the cheapest it’s ever been. There’s currently a range of Blueair models on sale for Prime Day, but we’ve picked this one out in particular — not just because it’s an amazing deal, but because we’ve tested it, and we know it's a capable air purifier to have at home. Not to mention it’s as smart as they come. 

Based on our Blueair 7470i review, this is pretty much as advanced as air purifiers come. By connecting it to your phone and accessing it via the Blueair app, you get live data on the quality of your air, including varying particle levels and information on carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide. If you don’t have your phone to hand, the quality of air is displayed via the LCD screen too — color coding helps to indicate this. Plus there’s information on the local temperature, filter lifetime remaining and humidity too.  

The app shows a graph to represent the current air conditions. This can help you solve what’s contributing to sudden poor air quality — be it smoke from the kitchen, hairspray or even deodorant. But, it can also help you see the overall difference the air purifier is making, which is something these appliances often lack. If you’re worried about the conditions outside of your home, the app lists information on this too, so you can better prepare yourself and best judge when to leave the house.  

We were pleased with more than just the smart features when we put this model to the test. It scored 270, 275 and 280 for its CADR across smoke, dust and pollen — which means its an effective and fast-acting air purifier. It’s also quiet in use, reaching 35.2 dB on its lowest setting during testing. On top of that, it’s relatively intuitive to use, despite all that extra data. Be warned though, it does consume more energy than your standard air purifier, requiring 0.241 kWh over 24 hours.    

Such a design is usually only available at a premium price, but thanks to Prime Day, it’s at a more affordable $228 for a limited time. In the past, it’s been reduced as far down as $299, but this latest deal discounts it by another $71 —  so this is as cheap as we’ve seen it. For that reason, if you want to invest in a premium air purifier, but the hefty price tags have put you off in the past, this deal is seriously worth considering.

On 7th June 2023, New York City was ranked first for having the most hazardous air quality in the world. This came after smoke from 400 wildfires in Canada cast an apocalyptic-like, orange haze over much of the city. And with at least 13 other states being issued air quality alerts, this will inevitably impact the air quality inside homes and personal spaces.

That’s where having one of the best air purifiers can make all the difference in filtering airborne pollutants and improving the quality of air. In addition, air purifiers can benefit those who struggle with allergies or asthma, and can also help you sleep easier at night. In fact, it was reported by Fox News that New York City stores sold out of air purifiers during the first days of the hazardous haze.

Buy this: BLUEAIR BLUE PURE 211+ AUTO

We tested some of the best air purifiers on the market, but the one that came up tops for overall performance was the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto. Despite being mid-sized, it’s a beast of a machine that offers first-rate air purification capabilities.

In fact, during testing it received a CADR of 353, 347, and 380 respectively for smoke, dust and pollen — performing impressively in all three categories. Suitable for large spaces totaling 550 square feet, this makes it the ideal option for most homes.

As well as performance, it’s simple to set up and use. When you plug it in, it starts out on auto mode and cycles through three colors (blue, yellow, and red), as it detects the air quality in the room. A blue light indicates a fine air quality, red means it’s working overtime to clean the air, while orange is somewhere in the middle. 

It also comes with three fan speeds that can be toggled by pressing the button on the top, from lowest to highest. And there’s also a night mode last in rotation, that turns the front light off, whilst still softly running the fan. 

Despite being over 20 inches tall (and bulkier than other purifiers), its cube-shaped, sleek design is durable, attractive and won’t look like an eyesore in the home. Plus, we like the fact it comes in other colors including grey, pink, blue, and green —  so you can match your interior style. The only downside is it can be slightly noisy at full power, clocking in at 60.8 decibels at the highest. However, this can easily be overlooked based on its impressive performance overall.

Buy this: HONEYWELL HPA 300

If you’re spending on a budget, but need a purifier to handle a large space, we recommend this Honeywell HPA 300. Despite its small price tag, it offers a strong performance, suitable for rooms of up to 465 square feet – which is a decent size. 

With CADR scores of 300, 320 and 300 for dust, smoke and pollen respectively, this is pretty impressive for a budget air purifier. Plus the replacement filters only cost around $40, which is excellent value. 

Alongside performance, it was also one of the easiest air purifiers to use. It comes with a touch-based control panel that is very intuitive to operate, and a quick reference guide. Additionally, it offers four different fan speeds (including a turbo mode), as well as a timer for two, four or eight hours. There’s also the option to dim the device for night time operation, and indicators showing the three HEPA filters and activated carbon pre-filter within. 

While it lacks an auto mode (meaning you’ll have to manually change the fan speeds), and other advanced settings, performance is still rated highly than some of the more expensive/advanced models. It’s also worth noting, the honeywell HPA 300 is pretty loud — which hit the noisier end of our tests, producing 59.6 dB on its loudest setting. And although it has a high CADR rating, it does consume a lot of energy to run this machine. 

However, you do get an amazing performance that you may not with more “energy-efficient” models, so you’ll need to weigh the costs. It may not be the quietest air purifier for your home, but it will definitely get the job done well, and is great value for money. 

Buy this: BLUEAIR HEALTHPROJECT 7470i

If you want a splurge buy, and prefer a smart air purifier, we can recommend the Blueair HealthProtect 7470i. 

With a strong performance, it scored a CADR rating of 270, 275, 280 for smoke dust and pollen, and suitable for rooms of up to 418 square feet. Besides an impressive filteration, it comes with all the mod cons including smart connectivity, which allows you to monitor and control it via your phone.

Its LCD screen on top of the device gives you real-time information on what it’s sensing . This includes the local temperature, filter lifetime remaining, and relative humidity of the room. Plus, it has two lights on the front representing gas pollutants and the other for larger particles — both of which are rare in other models.  

The Blueair HealthProtect 7470i comes with three speeds and an auto mode. Plus, it has a night mode that helps to reduce noise and light at bedtimes, which can all improve the quality of sleep. Using the app is very simple, and all the features you need are quick to locate and to navigate around. Best of all, it's one of the quietest air purifiers there is, reaching only 35.3 dB on its lowest setting and 48dB on its highest.

Bear in mind, it's the heaviest air purifier we’ve tested, weighing a hefty 27.6 pounds. And even though it comes on a set of wheels, it's still quite heavy to easily move around the home. It also consumes a lot of energy, which is the downside for outstanding performance and advanced features.

In addition, this was one of the most expensive air purifiers we tested, at just over $750  — but this model can often be found on sale at certain retailers. However,  the  Blueair HealthProtect 7470i is an exceptional air purifier that gives you performance, more information and value than you can get from other affordable models.

I had high hopes for the Dyson Zone, the air-purifying and noise-canceling headphones that look like they were stolen off a cyborg-like supervillain. But after wearing and traveling with the contraption, it’s not quite as practical for everyday use as I expected. In fact, it came in handy most during an unprecedented, apocalyptic-like bout of air pollution caused by wildfire smoke.

First announced in 2022, the Dyson Zone arrived well after the peak of the pandemic. Mask mandates had eased up and, in general, people were out and about in the world again. Still, the product came out specifically saying that it’s not for airborne viruses. Instead it promised a futuristic experience of having air pollution filtered out for commuters. Plus, the noise-canceling headphones aspect of it meant that you could also filter out sound.

And while the audio performance is impressive coming from a company known for premium air purifiers, vacuum cleaners and hair-styling tools, it’s probably not enough to justify the Dyson Zone’s starting $950 price tag for most people. Comfort and good battery life are essential to the best headphones, but this Dyson Zone review will explain why they feel like an afterthought with the wearable filtration system (admittedly, an impressive engineering feat) stealing the show.

Dyson Zone: Price and availability

The Dyson Zone is available now in two configurations. The entry-level bundle, featuring a silver visor, costs $950 and comes with a hard case, visor sleeve, visor cleaning brush and a spare set of electrostatic carbon filters. 

I tested the higher-end bundle, featuring a copper visor. It costs $999 and comes with a purse-like carrying case instead of a standard hard case, as well as a flight-adapter kit. Both models sport the same audio and air-filtration systems, so they offer the same performance.

Dyson Zone review: Design

I’ve heard the Dyson Zone design compared to the mask worn by Batman foe Bane, a Transformer faceplate, and something Tony Stark built in his lab. As much as the device feels pulled from science fiction, I happen to think it looks like, well, a Dyson product.

But adapting the Dyson design language to a pair of headphones might not have been the best move. With the visor, the headset weighs a hefty 1.47 pounds. That’s a lot to carry on my head and to walk around with. Both the AirPods Max and Sony WH-1000XM5 are well under a pound for comparison, so I do think these are just too heavy. I respect that it needs to accommodate the air purifiers, but at what cost to comfort?

What’s more, the materials on the headphones itself actually look very premium, but by contrast, the visor seems cheap. It’s mostly plastic, and looks like it could snap if bent the wrong way. Plus, it attracts fingerprints and makes a lot of clicky noises.

The safest way to carry the headset around is with a purse-like carrying case included with the $1,000 bundle. For city-living, I love a functional bag. I could even fit my phone and wallet inside along with the headset. I’m not sure Dyson navy is my color, but I think I made it work during this review period.

Dyson Zone review: Performance

When wearing the Dyson Zone and visor, it felt like getting a direct oxygen line — it’s honestly a nice sensation. If I were to start moving around or running to catch a subway with the headset set to Auto mode, it’ll even kick up the amount of air being pushed through the visor. Otherwise it has three airflow settings that can be adjusted either in the companion Dyson app or directly on the headset.

The Dyson Zone also has an easy filter installation and replacement system, and comes with an extra set of filters in the packaging. Plus, the app tells you when your filters need to be replaced, so there’s no guessing involved.

The app is also how you see the air quality around you, both in your location and actually what the headset is picking up around it. It specifically reads the level of nitrogen dioxide, which gets into air from burning fuel, so places with a lot of buildings or industrial parks or big trucks and buses, even just a ton of cars in traffic. Most places in NYC I wore the headset didn’t register concerning levels of pollutants on the average day, so unless I just wanted to feel the airflow, I didn’t find it necessary to wear. Mind you, I don’t have any kind of breathing conditions, such as asthma.

It wasn’t until wildfire smoke wafted over the city that the Dyson app warned me of an unhealthy AQI, and I felt glad to still have the review unit in my possession. While this let me know I should try to avoid time spent outside, I did want to see how the Dyson Zone fared with air filtration. Since the headset can capture 99% of particles as small as 0.1 microns that pass through the filters, it meant that at least some of the air pollution should be filtered out. It might not have the seal offered by a KN95, but it’s certainly better than nothing.

Dyson Zone review: Battery life

Continuous air flow poses a major setback, though. With the whole operation running, the Dyson Zone only lasts about two hours on a full charge. That means on a 6-hour flight, I needed to keep them plugged into an outlet most of the time. Luckily on my commute back home, I could get through both morning and evening trips, but I still had to charge them every night. 

Without using the visor, I could listen to music with active noise cancellation for much longer, past 10 hours in my experience. It’s still not as long-lasting as the Sony WH-1000XM5 I normally use for travel, those have over 30 hours of battery life.

Dyson Zone review: Audio performance

In some ways, the whole visor-filtration situation undermines the audio performance of the Dyson Zone. As the company’s first true audio product, it’s actually very good. Is it better than headphones that are half the price (or less)? No, but it’s on par with some of the best noise cancelling headphones you can buy right now.

Listening to Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,” the Zone delivered a huge beat drop with stronger bass than I expected. The synths and Eilish’s whispery vocals layered beautifully, creating that in-studio feel I look for when I test headphones. 

The Dyson Zone’s active noise cancellation is strong, too. On the airplane, I couldn’t hear crying babies or beverage service taking place while listening to shows and music. Outside, the sirens from emergency vehicles I regularly hear and see on my commute sounded much less blaring. I liked how I could see live sound data in the Dyson app to get a sense of my daily exposure as well. No surprise, in the city it’s quite high, telling me I might want to use ANC more often to protect my ear health.

Dyson Zone review: Verdict

I had higher hopes for the Dyson Zone. As I began testing for this Dyson Zone review, I felt so cool and futuristic. But I quickly realized that it lacks enough practically to justify the high price. On a day-to-day basis, I didn’t find the air purification all that useful, and the heft doesn’t make them the most comfortable over-ear headphones, either.

That said, if you do actually have a situation where you think or know that your health is harmed by air pollutants, the Dyson Zone could be a smart contraption to own. I was sure glad to have it when the wildfire smoke blanketed New York City, and I do know that there are areas that experience this kind of air pollution on a more regular basis. To that point, the Zone might not be a device that you hope to have to use, but one you might be glad to have in certain situations.

However, If you ask me, the answer is greater action against air pollution and burning fossil fuels, so that we don’t get to the point of needing to breathe through something like the Dyson Zone in the first place.

New York City looked like a sepia-toned post-apocalyptic hellscape on Tuesday and Wednesday. 

An air quality crisis hit NYC like never before, thanks to wildfire smoke that floated down all the way from Ontario and Quebec. Area residents watched in fascinated horror as the iconic Manhattan skyline disappeared in an orange haze. We saw air quality alerts turned maroon, the highest level. I realized this is what it must be like to live on the West Coast. 

Most outdoor events were canceled. Teachers were told to stay at home, while students observed an already-scheduled holiday. People who ventured outside wore masks, like in the early days of the pandemic. TG's own Kate Kozuch wore Dyson Zone air-purifying headphones. 

Many others, like myself, were able to remain indoors. And I was even more fortunate, since I had already invested in an air purifier to alleviate allergies earlier this year. 

The air quality crisis has renewed everyone's interest in purchasing the best air purifiers to keep indoor air clean. According to Google Trends, searches for "air purifier" increased by more than 450% during the worst of the airpocalypse. Fox News reported that New York City stores sold out of air purifiers.

I was already a big fan of my air purifier, a Coway Airmega AP-1512HH, for significantly reducing my allergies. It more than proved its worth during the air quality crisis. 

Wildfire smoke is very bad for your health

On Wednesday, New York City recorded its worst-ever Air Quality Index (AQI) at 352, which is deemed "hazardous."

The color-coding at that level is maroon, but believe me, nobody was dancing with no shoes and looking up at the sky — which was actually orange (h/t Taylor Swift). Stepping outside, I could smell the distinct odor of burning material, like I'd been stoking a campfire non-stop for half a day. 

Smoke pollution is considered "fine particulate matter," or microscopic bits smaller than 2.5 microns. That's even smaller than dust. It's so tiny that it can't be filtered out with surgical mask. 

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) advised that exposure to PM 2.5 can "cause short-term health effects such as irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and shortness of breath. Exposure to elevated levels of fine particulate matter can also worsen medical conditions such as asthma and heart disease."

Experts advised everyone to stay indoors if they could, but most particularly children, the elderly and people with preexisting conditions such as asthma, allergies, or COPD. 

But smoke can easily make its way indoors. Since Americans spend an average of around 90 percent of their time indoors, the quality of indoor air has a massive effect on our health.

That's where air purifiers can help.

My air purifier went on red alert

As I mentioned, I bought a Coway Airmega AP-1512HH earlier this year. I liked its compact, lightweight, unobtrusive design; washable outer pre-filter; deodorizing carbon filter; and HEPA filter to trap micro-particles. Also, it was on sale at Amazon. 

I keep my air purifier on eco mode, which automates fan speed according the air quality level. Prior to this week, I'd only seen it turn red (high fan speed) twice — once after I seared a steak and once while my bathroom was being repainted. 

On Tuesday evening, when the smoky haze started to ramp, I noticed my air purifier going into purple mode (medium fan speed) more frequently. 

On Wednesday, I opened my front door to retrieve a package (kudos to the poor delivery drivers) for perhaps 30 seconds. And my air purifier went RED. 

It stayed on high for about half an hour (even longer than the steak incident). And all through the afternoon and evening, as NYC turned into a scene from Dune, the air purifier ran near continuously in purple or red modes. 

Thank goodness, since friends who went outdoors (even with masks) reported symptoms like watering eyes, sneezing and headaches. Other friends who stayed inside but didn't have an air purifier said they could still smell smoke. Me? I didn't get so much as a whiff or a tickle in my nose.

While the East Coast in general, and NYC in particular, have been spared constant wildfire smoke, that could change in the near future. We may experience another air quality crisis like this one. Which is why I recommend getting an air purifier. When the next airpocalypse comes along, you'll breathe easy.

'Tis the damn season for runny noses, coughing and congestion. Around the turn of the year, I was afflicted with heavy congestion, which I naturally assumed was a cold, COVID, RSV, the flu or any number of other illnesses that have been running rampant recently. 

Yet, I never ran a fever, didn't have a sore throat, only coughed occasionally and didn't feel that bone-deep tiredness that usually accompanies a virus or infection. After a week of not being able to breathe, yet without symptoms worsening, a lightbulb went off: Allergies. 

Allergies aren't confined to spring; winter allergies can be just as brutal. Once I realized the culprit behind my congestion, I immediately began taking my usual allergy regimen: over-the-counter antihistamine medication like fexofenadine (Allegra) in the morning or levocetirizine (Xyzal) at night.

They helped, but didn't make me feel completely better. Without fail, by late afternoon, I would feel stuffed up again. I needed another solution. 

It turned out to be an air purifier.

What causes winter allergies?

Americans spend an average of around 90 percent of their time indoors, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Naturally, the quality of indoor air has a massive effect on our health.

In the winter, common allergy triggers include dust mites, pet dander, mold and pest droppings. 

In my case, I don't have pets and saw no visible signs of pests, so I figured the problem is dust or mold. 

I consulted my colleague Cynthia Lawrence's tips on reducing allergens in the home. I was already following most of the advice: I remove my shoes at the door, I run my robot vacuum several times a week, I regularly wash my bedding in hot water, and use vinegar to clean the bathroom (as suggested in our guide on how to clean mold).

There was one item on the list I hadn't followed yet: investing in an air purifier. 

An air purifier cleared up my allergies

After perusing our guide to the best air purifiers, I chose the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH for a number of reasons. First, it was on sale at Amazon for under $140 (the price has risen again, unfortunately). That was a fantastic deal for a well-reviewed model. 

I liked that it was fairly compact and unobtrusive in style, as well as light enough to move between rooms. According to our review and others, it does a good job of what it's supposed to do: purifying air. There's a washable outer pre-filter to capture large particles (like hair), a carbon filter that deodorizes and a HEPA filter that traps micro-particles.

I also appreciated the eco mode, which makes the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH very energy efficient. And it didn't have any bells and whistles that I didn't need, like voice controls or other smart features. The price of replacement filters, around $40 once a year, seemed in line with other brands. 

Once I unpackaged it and set it up, the air purifier has been simple to use. A light tells you the air quality level (blue is good, red is bad) and the eco mode automates fan speed according to that level. It can get a little loud on the highest fan setting, but that comes on rarely. The only time it's switched to high is after I seared a steak and created a lot of smoke. 

After just a few days with my new air purifier, I noticed my congestion easing. I wasn't drowning in mucus every afternoon. A week in, my nose was cleared and I could breathe easily again. Goodbye, allergies!

Our Homes Editor bought a Dyson air purifier and was seriously impressed by the results — the device took care of the pollen in her home and eased her allergy symptoms with almost immediate effect.

We also like the design of this air purifier. Its small footprint means it can be tucked into a corner, and you’ll probably forget it’s there. But it also has a stylish and futuristic look worthy of conversation, if you decide to put it front and center in your living room.

The GermGuardian AC5250PT is a mouthful to say. This upright air purifier isn’t the fanciest or most technologically integrated piece of machinery out there, but it does offer a basic set of features, including five fan speeds, a sleep mode and a timer. 

When looking at the best air purifiers around, none of them use UV light as part of the air filtration process — which is where this air purifier stands out from the crowd. Check out our GermGuardian AC5250P review to see if it makes any difference. 

GermGuardian AC5250PT review: Price and availability

The GermGuardian AC5250PT will set you back $149, which makes it sem-affordable. It’s available from Amazon, as well as brands such as Walmart, Best Buy and Guardian Technologies directly. It’s only available in black with silver trim. The replacement filters will set you back $60 at a time, which is by no means cheap.

GermGuardian AC5250PT review: Design

In terms of looks, the GermGuardian AC5250PT won’t win any beauty contests. It stands upright at 28 inches tall and weighs around 11 pounds. This puts it in the mid-tier weight-wise, making it close to the Blueair Blue Pure  211+ Auto, which isn’t that heavy.  It’s encased in a plastic shell that doesn’t feel of high quality and has a fairly sharp edge on its base. It’s possible to scratch yourself on this edge while moving it around, which isn’t ideal. In a modern home that focuses on bright, lofty aesthetics, the GermGuardian AC5250PT will stand out like a sore thumb, even before you plug it in. 

The device comes with five different fan speeds and an 8-hour programmable timer, but no auto mode. This means it can’t automatically adjust the speed depending on the current conditions. It will essentially blow as much air as you set it to through its two layers of filters, which include a charcoal and HEPA layer. The UV light that it comes with claims to reduce specific germs and airborne viruses, although its impact isn’t obvious. Plus, if you leave it on all the time, it could potentially burn out the bulb, warranting another replacement cost.

GermGuardian AC5250PT review: Ease of Use

When the GermGuardian AC5250PT is switched on, it shines an intense, bright red light from its V-shaped crest. The lights themselves cannot be dimmed, which makes sleeping tricky, although the speed of the fan can be dulled down using the sleep mode. 

Setting the device up is fairly simple. Just remove the back panel, followed by removing any plastic inside. The manual is very short and succinct — full of illustrated diagrams of the device and how it works. The manual didn’t upset the set-up process in any way, however, removing the bag from the filter was not included in the booklet. The filter is also easy to replace — you just need to repeat the above steps and switch in a new one. The control panel is easy to operate and very user-friendly.

GermGuardian AC5250PT review: Performance

The GermGuardian AC5250PT has no smart connectivity or internet capabilities, which continues its run of being a bit lackluster. Other devices, like the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH and the Blueair Blue Pure 411 Auto can do a lot more for the same price. Having a HEPA filter does make it slightly more appealing for those looking to remove viral contaminants, but most air purifiers tend to offer this nowadays. 

In our CADR tests, which test how quickly and efficiently air purifiers can purify the air, it performed in the lower half of our bracket, earning a 189/122/132 in smoke, dust, and pollen respectively. With a suggested room size of 189 square feet, it didn’t match up with other mid-sized air purifiers, like the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto, although it clearly performs best when it comes to smoke particles.

In terms of noise, it’s one of the loudest around. At its lowest speed, it was six decibels above the ambient noise level of the room. We blasted it all the way up to its max setting and it was over 25 decibels louder. It wasn’t the loudest overall air purifier we tested, but it did make the most noise on the lowest setting, along with the Honeywell HPA300.

It is shocking how much power this device uses though. In just 24 hours of use on its middle setting, it used 0.853 kWh of energy, making it one of the most energy-consuming air purifiers we tested. The Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto used just 0.159 kWh by comparison.

GermGuardian AC5250PT review: Verdict

Unfortunately, the limited filters, lack of an auto mode, and cheap feel make the GermGuardian AC5250PT hard to recommend.  The UV light technology, though quirky, can’t cover up the disappointing CADR scores. And when you compare it to other midsize air purifiers, like the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ Auto, it just can’t do the job as well, and will cost more to run too.  

The GermGuardian AC5250PT is a very popular device, being one of the more affordable units designed for larger spaces. But, it falls short in its design, use, and practicality, making it one of the weaker choices out there on the market.
