Those old Disney Channel movie bumpers never fail to churn up plenty of nostalgia, making me misty-eyed over the golden age of DCOMs. Disney, in its latest bid to mine that highly profitable vein dry, released "Camp Rock 3" this week on Disney+ and Hulu. It's got all the catchy songs and feel-good teen drama that made "Camp Rock" such a beloved part of many childhoods to begin with. 'The Lizzie McGuire Movie' (2003)

"The Lizzie McGuire Movie" was played on repeat in my house growing up, the closest thing to an aughts jukebox musical we had until "Mamma Mia" had us belting out "Dancing Queen" two years later. Based on the show of the same name, it stars Hillary Duff as the lovable but hopelessly out of her depth Lizzie, who heads to Rome on a school trip where a dreamy Italian pop star (Yani Gellman) mistakes her for his ex singing partner.

He convinces Lizzie to take her place on stage and lip-sync along to her parts, kicking off a whirlwind romance that's stuffed to the brim with early-2000s Disney charm. For more breezy, feel-good energy and catchy musical moments like in "Camp Rock 3," this is the one to watch.

'High School Musical' (2006)

Of course, no Disney Channel movie marathon would be complete without "High School Musical." Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens are iconic as Troy and Gabriella, a jock and a transfer student who fall for each other while auditioning for their school's musical. To everyone's surprise they land the lead parts, but drama class royalty Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and her twin Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) won't be overshadowed that easily.

Sure it's August, but it's never too early to start celebrating Halloween. Especially with Hulu adding the first two "Halloweentown" movies this month. This holiday staple follows Marnie Piper (Kimberly J. Brown), a teenager whose widowed mother (Judith Hoag) refuses to let her kids celebrate Halloween.

When her kooky grandmother Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) leaves after her annual Halloween visit, Marnie and her brother (Joey Zimmerman) secretly follow her back to Halloweentown, a fantastical city they thought was only in storybooks. Packed with plenty of cozy Halloween vibes, it's a nostalgic pick for anyone looking for a blast from the past to reconnect with their inner child.

'The Blackening' (2023)

Starting things off on a lighter note, "The Blackening" is a self-aware horror movie that deliberately leans into a familiar tropes as part of its satire. If you’ve seen even a handful of slasher films, you probably already know where this is going. Some friends head to a secluded cabin in the woods for a carefree weekend getaway, only to stumble on a strange board game that forces them into a deadly game with no way out. To make it through the night, they’ll need to rely on their knowledge of horror movie stereotypes, though whether it'll be enough to save them is anyone's guess.

While it definitely leans more comedy than horror, "The Blackening" is a smart deconstruction of the genre that I really enjoyed. I was cracking up when I saw it in theaters a few years ago, and it made me fondly remember the "Scary Movie" franchise back before all those sloppy sequels muddied the waters.

'Pearl' (2022)

Ti West's entire "X" trilogy landed on Hulu this month, and "Pearl" is the best of the bunch by a country mile. And while it's the middle entry, it also works on its own as a standalone story. "The Odyssey's" Mia Goth gives the performance of a lifetime as Pearl, a disturbed young woman with her sights set on Hollywood — if she can get out from under the thumb of her overbearing mother (Tandi Wright) long enough to shoot her shot.

When her wealthy sister-in-law lets her know about a troupe in town auditioning new dancers to take on the road, Pearl sees it as her ticket to finally get off the farm. If only it were that easy. When her chances at stardom threaten to crumble right before her eyes, she doesn't handle it well. And I mean at all. This unsettling psychological horror owes much of its success to Goth, who kills it as a hungry starlet who'll stop at nothing for her 15 minutes of fame.

'Ready or Not 2: Here I Come' (2026)

2019's "Ready or Not" was a surprisingly good time, and while I'm still not fully convinced a sequel needed to exist, "Ready or Not 2: Here I come" delivers enough bloody carnage, comic chaos, and inventive kills to keep you entertained. Samara Weaving reprise her role as Grace (Samara Weaving), now deeply traumatized after surviving a deadly game of Hide and Seek with her husband's family.

After reuniting with her estranged sister, Faith (Kathryn Newton), the two are quickly pulled into another lethal game of cat and mouse because REASONS. This time around, the ones pulling the strings are an elite cohort of families vying for control of a secret Satanic cult. Grace and Faith must set aside their differences and work together if they hope to make it out alive.

‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ (Netflix)

As someone who missed a lot of Adam Sandler's seminal works, I didn't plan on watching "Don't Say Good Luck" this weekend. Then my colleague Rory Mellon said it was one of the best Netflix original movies he'd seen in ages, and now my interest is officially piqued. Sandler's real-life daughter Sunny stars as 16-year-old theater kid Sophie (Sunny Sandler), who's hoping to land a part in her in her high school’s upcoming production of the popular Broadway musical “Waitress.

Sophie's so locked in on getting the role that she's blindsided when her mom ("Yellowjackets'" Melanie Lynskey) discovers her cancer has returned. Her home life gets more and more chaotic as her dad (Max Greenfield) struggles to hold down the fort, and her two opinionated grandparents (Bebe Neuwirth and Steve Buscemi) aren't making things any easier. With an impressive ensemble cast and a heartfelt conceit, "Don’t Say Good Luck" has all the makings of a low-key, feel-good watch to lighten your weekend. .

'The Invite' (PVOD)

My friends won't shut up about "The Invite," Olivia Wilde's English-language remake of the Spanish comedy "The People Upstairs." And I don't blame them. Written by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, this flirty comedy stars Wilde and Seth Rogen as a married couple with precious little patience left for each other. A dinner party with their hot upstairs neighbors (Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton) spirals into unexpected but not entirely unwanted territory.

Cue the social and sexual awkwardness. "The Invite" is every bit as much fun as people say it is. It's a silly and subversive comedy that's surprisingly moving in the end. The ensemble has instant chemistry, the sharp script will have you cackling, and it's one of Olivia Wilde's best films yet.

'Camp Rock 3' (Disney+)

After 16 long years, "Camp Rock" (and the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato) return for a highly-anticipated threequel to Disney's millennial fever dream musical franchise. The biggest "Camp Rock" fan I know, my little sister, told me it doesn't hold a candle to the first two, but it's still a fun watch with plenty of catchy music.

When their opening act cancels last minute, Connect 3 hosts a competition at Camp Rock to find a new generations of talent for their upcoming tour. Liamani Segura, Malachi Barton, Hudson Stone and Lumi Pollack join the cast alongside the returning stars. Like a lot of unnecessary sequels, "Camp Rock 3" seems made in a lab to squeeze what nostalgia and magic is left out of a bygone franchise.

'Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear' (Hulu)

Travis Barker has been through a lot. Once a trash collector in Laguna Beach, he jettisoned to fame a drummer with the quintessential aughts rock band Blink-182, going on to star on the 2005 reality series "Meet the Barkers" and marry "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star Kourtney Kardashian. But despite spending decades in the spotlight, Barker’s new documentary offers a more intimate look at the personal battles he faced after surviving a near-fatal plane crash.

With appearances from collaborators, cultural icons, and those closest to him, "Louder Than Fear" explores Barker's answer to the question: If you were given a second chance at life, what would you do differently?

'A Child of My Own' (Netflix)

Netflix has been on a roll with shocking true-crime documentaries this summer, from "The Crash" and "Maternal Instinct" to "A Toxic Love Story." The streamer's latest, "A Child of My Own," is one of the wildest stranger-than-fiction tales yet. Directed by Maite Alberdi ("The Mole Agent"), the Spanish-language documentary revisits the case of Eleonor Alejandra Marín Mendoza, who was arrested in 2009 for kidnapping a newborn from a hospital.

You'd be forgive for thinking this is "Maternal Instinct" all over again, but I promise you, you have no idea where this story's going. About halfway through, Mendoza and her husband sit down for interviews to share their side, and they have a very different account of what happened. It quickly becomes clear that systemic issues may be the real villain all along, as they so often are in these headline-nabbing cases.

'Furious'

Genre: Crime drama series

What's it about? "Furious" stars Emmy Rossum as FBI agent Alice Black. She's a former homicide detective now working for the Feds, and she's on the hunt for a serial killer (Lola Petticrew). But she doesn't realize that her serial killer is really a sex trafficking survivor on a quest for vigilante justice.

Why you should watch it: This show has been a surprise hit for Hulu. It's currently an impressive 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences seem nearly as enthused. This might secretly be the show of the summer, and it's not too late to catch up.

'Futurama' season 14

Genre: Animated sci-fi sitcom series

What's it about? Set in the third millennium A.D., "Futurama" centers around a band of misfits. Theoretically, they run a delivery service, but they mostly get up to hijinks. This season, it seems like time travel is set to play a part, so hopefully we don't end up with multiversal madness.

Why you should watch it: "Futurama" is on the Mount Rushmore of American animated comedies. The most recent seasons may not be as good as the first several, but they're still guaranteed to earn a laugh.

'The Shards' season 1

Genre: Teen thriller series

What's it about? "The Shards" is based on the fictionalized memoir of show co-creator Bret Easton Ellis. Set at the prestigious Buckley Prep, it stars Igby Rigney as a young Ellis. His world gets turned upside down when a new student, Robert (Homer Gere), arrives at the same time a serial killer known as the Trawler becomes active.

Why you should watch it: Ryan Murphy is a prolific showrunner, and his FX shows all tend to have a combination of polish, style and darkness. "The Shards" seems to be cut from that same cloth, especially with "American Psycho" author Ellis on hand to turn up the dark, twisted drama. Just be warned that most people seem to either love it or hate it.

Hulu is an excellent choice for building your next weekend movie marathon. The streaming service regularly adds both originals and classics to its library. Plus, because it's owned by Disney, it's the home for new releases from several Disney-owned studios. It even has deals with some other studios to get new releases before any other service, whether they're produced by Disney or not.

This weekend, I'm only picking movies that came out in the past 12 months. Some of these have never even been on a streaming service before, like "Busboys," the latest comedy from David Spade. "The Wizard of the Kremlin" is also getting its streaming debut this weekend, and stars Paul Dano as an influential government official in the early days of the Vladimir Putin administration. Finally, I've saved the best for last (at least, according to the critics). "Violent Ends" is a seriously gritty thriller, and you won't want to miss it now that it's on Hulu.

'Busboys' (2026)

Genre: Comedy

What's it about? Markie and "Steef" are not the smartest. In fact, they're idiots. So they decide to become busboys at a restaurant, thinking one day they'll become waiters, which will solve all their problems. Which, anyone who has ever worked in food service will tell you, is something only an idiot would think.

Why you should watch it: I'm not sure "Busboys" is any good. The trailer didn't exactly sell me. But it has some actors I like, including Chris Elliott, Bobby Lee and Jay Pharoah. Audiences seem to like it well enough, as well. It's currently rated 65% by them on Rotten Tomatoes.

'The Wizard of the Kremlin' (2026)

Genre: Political satire

What's it about? "The Wizard of the Kremlin" centers around Vadim Baranov (Paul Dano), a fictional character based on the very real Vladislav Surkov. He starts as a young artist in 1990s Russia but then transforms into an influential government official and spin doctor in the early days of Vladimir Putin's (Jude Law) government.

Why you need to watch it: Critics and audiences are equally tepid in their responses to this movie. But with a cast that includes Dano, Law, Alicia Vikander, Tom Sturridge and Jeffrey Wright, I'm willing to give it a shot. There's so much talent on the call sheet that I'm hopeful to at least not have a bad time, even if I'm not blown away.

'Violent Ends' (2025)

Genre: Gothic crime thriller

What's it about? "Violent Ends" stars Billy Magnussen as Lucas. Unlike the rest of his criminal family, Lucas tries to be an honest man. But an armed robbery gone wrong draws him into the family business, and that business is good ol' fashioned small-town violence.

Why you need to watch it: As someone from a small town that could easily be mistaken for the Northwestern Arkansas filming location of "Violent Ends," I'm a sucker for these types of crime thrillers. It's the same reason I love the show "Justified" so much. I know these types of people, so it's very easy to connect with. But it seems others have connected with the movie too. It's currently 68% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

But if you want something to watch without paying a rental fee, Netflix has a new teen musical, HBO Max has an action-thriller, and Hulu has a political satire.

‘The Invite’ (PVOD)

“The Invite” is a chaotic comedy from director Olivia Wilde. It boasts one of the year’s best screenplays courtesy of writers Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, and a quartet of fantastic performances from Wilde, Penélope Cruz, Edward Norton and Seth Rogen. A remake of a 2020 Spanish movie, “The Invite” is a sharp comedy that explores the messy dynamics of long-term relationships in ways that are consistently hilarious but also tragic.

Presented almost like a play, with a single apartment setting, the movie opens with a married couple, Joe (Rogen) and Angela (Wilde), inviting their upstairs neighbors, Piña (Cruz) and Hawk (Norton), over for a dinner party. The evening rapidly descends into chaos as Joe and Angela’s marital problems surface, and Piña and Hawk’s somewhat unconventional relationship is revealed. It’s a fast-paced comedy with sharp dialogue.

‘Jackass Best and Last’ (PVOD)

There are only so many times you can be kicked in the crotch before calling it quits, and for Johnny Knoxville and his band of scrappy underdogs, “Jackass: Best and Last” brings the curtain down on a couple of decades of causing bodily harm to each other. The entire cast has been adamant this will be the final “Jackass” movie, and this latest stunt comedy is more of a trip down memory lane than a full-fat fifth entry in the MTV franchise.

The new clips filmed for this movie include a quiz show with a painful punishment for getting a question wrong, an escape room from hell, and the most gross game of Twister ever. Interspersed with the new stunts are highlights from the previous “Jackass” movies and some never-before-seen footage. It leaves “Best and Last” feeling more like a DVD extra than a true “Jackass” finale, but any longtime fan will get a kick out of all the carnage.

‘Minions & Monsters’ (PVOD)

Those annoying yellow terrors return in “Minions & Monsters.” Parents everywhere were probably bracing themselves for another brainless slapstick animation that they’d be forced to watch on a loop. But surprisingly, “Minions & Monsters” is the best movie in the franchise since the minions were introduced in “Despicable Me.” It loses some steam in the second half, but its first act is a remarkably fond tribute to classic cinema.

Following a new army of yellow minions, “Minions & Monsters” sees a group of nonsense-speaking pests become unexpected stars of the silent film era, quickly becoming the most in-demand talent in Hollywood. Their rise is followed by a swift fall as the introduction of sound films ruins their acting career. However, when real monsters are unleashed upon Los Angeles, it’s up to the minions to save the day from the problem they created.

‘Don’t Say Good Luck’ (Netflix)

Netflix is in the Sandler family business. The streamer has partnered with Adam Sandler on numerous projects, and has now brought his two daughters into the fold. First up was Sadie Sandler’s “Roommates,” which debuted in April, and now it's the turn of Sunny Sandler, who stars in this musical teen drama. Alongside the youngest Sandler sister, this film stars Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, Stephanie Beatriz, and Steve Buscemi.

Sophie (Sunny Sandler) is a theater kid who has just landed the lead role in her high school’s upcoming production of the hit Broadway musical “Waitress.” But the real drama is happening off stage as Sophie’s home life becomes increasingly chaotic. While it would be easy to dismiss this Netflix original as a nepobaby project, the trailer shows promise. Plus, director Julia Hart has form in the teen drama genre, having also helmed “Hollywood Stargirl” for Disney+, which debuted to a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Girls Like Girls’ (Peacock)

If one coming-of-age teen drama wasn’t enough for you this week, Peacock is set to add “Girls Like Girls” to its library following the movie’s limited theatrical run back in June. The indie movie was well received when it arrived in cinemas, with Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus reading, “Bracingly personal and finely acted, Hayley Kiyoko's ‘Girls Like Girls’ is a gently moving tale of queer love that's elevated by striking visual flair.”

As is often the case in coming-of-age teen dramas, “Girls Like Girls” opens with 17-year-old Coley (Maya da Costa) moving to a small Oregon town to live with her estranged father. Once in this new environment, she quickly falls in with a group of locals, including the charismatic Sonya (Myra Molloy). These two become fast friends, and as Coley is pulled further into Sonya’s world, romantic sparks fly, but the path of first love is often a bumpy one.

‘Normal’ (HBO Max)

Bob Odenkirk seems to be taking a leaf out of Liam Neeson’s book and entering his action star era, and I’m here for it. Having headlined the two “Nobody” movies (which are both great action-thrillers), his next action flick, laced with plenty of comedy, is “Normal,” which my colleague Malcolm McMillain described as “fine, for the most part, but it's also forgettable, despite a series of bloody kills.” So maybe keep expectations in check.

Sheriff Ulysses (Odenkirk) is enjoying the quiet life after being posted in the small Midwestern town of Normal, Minnesota for a temporary period. The town offers him an escape from his marital woes and a place to lick his wounds after being injured on the job. However, the town definitely doesn’t live up to its name, and after a bank robbery goes wrong, Ulysses learns that the Yakuza control Normal, and he resolves to fight back.

‘The Wizard of the Kremlin’ (Hulu)

Director Olivier Assayas helms this political satire based on the 2022 novel by Giuliano da Empoli. It was nominated for the Golden Lion after its Venice International Film Festival premiere, but that awards success didn’t translate to much interest at the box office. Perhaps it’s the Russia-set story that put off general audiences. After all, a movie about the Russian corridors of power is a tough sell given the current political climate. The reviews weren’t so hot either, which no doubt didn’t help matters.

Set in the early 1990s, it follows Vadim Baranov (Paul Dano), a fictional Russian TV producer, who becomes the spin doctor for a rising figure, Vladimir Putin (Jude Law). As a new Russia takes shape, Baranov is tasked with setting the narrative and is willing to blur the boundaries between truth and lies. Also starring Alicia Vikander, Will Keen, Tom Sturridge and Jeffrey Wright, “The Wizard of the Kremlin" is streaming from Friday.

After years apart, Westley — who has transformed from being a humble farm boy to the heroic Dread Pirate Roberts — sets off to rescue his beloved with the help of kindhearted giant Fezzik (Andre the Giant) and skilled swordsman Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin). Combining action-comedy with swoon-worthy romance, “The Princess Bride” is a lasting testament to Reiner’s varied gifts and there’s no better way to honor his memory than with a rewatch.

'Labyrinth'

If there was any rock star with enough swagger to pull off playing someone called the Goblin King, it’s the one and only David Bowie. The Starman himself leads this musical-fantasy film from Jim Henson, which turns the big 4-0 this year, making it high time to revisit the wonderfully weird cult classic. After Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) jokingly wishes away her baby brother, the teen is given just 13 hours to navigate a magical maze to rescue her sibling from the Goblin King Jareth.

Packed with elaborately practical puppetry, a dreamily surreal otherworld and a memorable synth-pop soundtrack, “Labyrinth” is one of the decade’s most distinctive creations, and with that big anniversary hitting this year, it’s worth another journey into the maze.

'Dirty Dancing'

Few movies capture that summer feeling quite like the 1987 Emile Ardolino-directed “Dirty Dancing.” While bright, law-bound high schooler Baby (Jennifer Grey) is vacationing at a Catskills resort with her family in the summer of 1963, she gets unexpectedly entangled in the work drama —and sensual dancing—of the resort’s resident dance tutor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). While her parents (Jerry Orbach and Kelly Bishop) and sister (Cynthia Rhodes) keep busy with afternoons by the lake, Baby secretly takes dance lessons with Johnny that turns into a passionate affair between the unlikely pair.

“Dirty Dancing” was a pop-culture phenomenon when it premiered nearly four decades ago, and remains an enduring favorite thanks to the palpable onscreen chemistry between Grey and Swayze (allegedly fueled by offscreen animosity) and the instantly iconic dance number that serves as the film’s rousing finale.

Genre: True crime docuseries

What's it about? This season of "Betrayal" covers the story of Karoline Borega. She thought she was getting a happily-ever-after when she married Colorado Springs PD officer Joel Kern. But her dream turned into a nightmare when she learned he was abusing his power for sexual conquests.

Why you should watch it: This Hulu series dives deep into the scandal. Not only are there interviews with Borega and her daughter, but there's even an appearance by one of Kern’s ex-lovers. If you are a true crime fanatic, you won't want to skip this salacious season of "Betrayal."

'The Shards' season 1

Genre: Teen thriller series

What's it about? "The Shards" is based on show co-creator Bret Easton Ellis' fictionalized memoir of the same name. It stars Igby Rigney as a young Ellis at Buckley Prep. His world gets turned upside down when a new student, Robert (Homer Gere) arrives at the same time a serial killer known as the Trawler becomes active.

What's it about? "The Ninth Jedi" was an episode from the anthology series "Star Wars: Visions." Now, it's been spun off into its own season of television. Tune in to see the Jedi Lah Kara (Chinatsu Akasaki [Japanese]/Kimiko Glenn [English]) and her crew take on a powerful Imperial warlord.

Why you should watch it: "Star Wars: Visions" is one of the best Star Wars shows ever. I'd put it just behind "Andor." It's an anthology series that isn't tied to the canon, meaning creators can use the Star Wars sandbox to create whatever stories they want. "The Ninth Jedi" is one of the best "Visions" episodes, and the trailer for its spin-off series gave me goosebumps. This is a must-watch, and I'll definitely be watching it this weekend.

Hulu is an excellent choice for building your next weekend movie marathon. The streaming service regularly adds both originals and classics to its library. This weekend, I'm starting things off with "Ex Machina." This sci-fi masterpiece comes from "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" writer Alex Garland and is a must-watch if you've never seen it. Then, you could check out "Imaginary," a newly added horror movie. But the reviews on that aren't great, so I'm recommending you skip it and check out "Pearl" instead, as well as "X" and "MaXXXine," the two other movies in Ti West's horror trilogy.

'Ex Machina' (2014)

Genre: Sci-fi thriller movie

What's it about? "Ex Machina" stars Domhnall Gleeson as Caleb, a programmer. He's set to spend a week at the home of his company's CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). On his arrival, he learns his visit's true purpose: he's there to test a humanoid robot with an artificial intelligence (Alicia Vikander) and see if she can pass for human.

Why you should watch it: I firmly fall in the camp of this movie's writer/director, Alex Garland, can do no wrong. That includes everything from the show "Devs" to this year's incredible "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple." "Ex Machina" might be his best work, though. Don't miss it.

'Imaginary' (2024)

Genre: Supernatural horror movie

What's it about? "Imaginary" stars DeWanda Wise as Jessica. She's just moved her family into her childhood home, where her daughter, Alice (Pyper Braun), discovers Chauncey (Dane DiLiegro). This was Jessica's imaginary friend, and it turns out the mother and daughter are the only ones who can see him. That becomes a problem when Chauncey lures them into "The Never Ever," a supernatural realm that's home to all imaginary friends ... including the evil ones.

Why you need to watch it: This isn't the greatest horror movie ever made. At least, not according to Rotten Tomatoes, which rates it relatively poorly. But, it's one of the newest movies to drop on Hulu, so it gets included on the list. Don't worry, I'm going to make it up to you with my final recommendation.

'Pearl' (2022)

Genre: Slasher horror movie

What's it about? The follow-up to "X," this slasher film takes us back in time to 1918 Texas. Here we meet Pearl, the villain from Ti West's film. Here, she's not old, though. Instead, she's a more spritely figure played by Mia Goth. But she's still just as sex-crazed and bloodthirsty as the version we meet in "X" nearly 60 years later.

Why you need to watch it: "Pearl" is an excellent slasher. Definitely watch this instead of "Imaginary" if you're in the mood for horror. While you're at it, watch "X" and the third movie in West's trilogy, "MaXXXine," which both also just arrived on Hulu.

“A B-movie with A ideas” is how director Elizabeth Bender (Elizabeth Debicki) describes her work on horror sequel “The Puritan II” in “MaXXXine,” the third movie in Ti West’s “X” trilogy, and that description could easily apply to West’s horror series as a whole. Beginning with 2022’s “X” and continuing through its 2022 prequel “Pearl” and 2024 sequel “MaXXXine,” West and star Mia Goth created a franchise that has already cemented its place among horror classics, and all three movies can now be streamed on Hulu.

I saw each film when it was initially released, but rewatching them all back-to-back recently made West’s achievement even more impressive, as he offers a master class in cinematic homage across three movies. Not only does he borrow from the rich history of horror, as might be expected, but also from the disparate sources of both classic Hollywood and vintage adult films, filtering all of those influences through his own unique sensibility and Goth’s mesmerizing screen presence.

My favorite among the three films is still the first, “X,” but all of them have their unique strengths, and all are anchored by Goth’s indelible dual performance as two women who dream of stardom. While Pearl Douglas sublimates her showbiz failures into homicidal rampages that persist for decades, Maxine Minx refuses to let anyone get in the way of her rise to fame, even if that means resorting to violence. Both women are complex, fascinating figures who belong in the horror pantheon.

‘X’ sets the stage for a brilliant trilogy

A newspaper headline in “MaXXXine” refers to the events of “X” as “The Texas Porn Star Massacre,” and West is clearly paying homage to Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” with a movie set in Texas in 1979, just a few years after the release of Hooper’s slasher classic. There’s more to “X” than just a tribute to a genre landmark, though, and West puts his own stamp on the slasher movie while also delivering a compelling period piece set during a pivotal period in the evolution of adult film.

Maxine is just one part of a small crew who arrive at a remote farm owned by Pearl and her husband Howard (Stephen Ure) to film a porn movie called “The Farmer’s Daughters.” Maxine’s fiancé Wayne Gilroy (Martin Henderson) is the owner of the strip club where she performs, and also an aspiring producer with big dreams about porn’s commercial potential. Director RJ Nichols (Owen Campbell) wants to create something more artistic, and Maxine doesn’t care either way, as long as it’s a stepping stone on her way to stardom.

The elderly Pearl and Howard aren’t too pleased to discover what their tenants are planning to do, but their violent reaction isn’t rooted in self-righteous judgment. For Pearl, it’s about jealousy, and Goth, under some truly stunning old-age makeup, makes Pearl both tragic and terrifying, as she brutally attacks the unsuspecting filmmakers.

“The story can’t just suddenly change midway through,” RJ complains when his sound recordist girlfriend Lorraine (Jenna Ortega) decides she wants to appear on camera, but that’s exactly what West pulls off in “X,” shifting from a stylish and funny look at a scrappy adult film production to an equally stylish and gruesome backwoods slasher picture.

‘Pearl’ deepens the killer’s tragic backstory

West seamlessly switches genres and approaches for the lush, old-fashioned melodrama of “Pearl,” a prequel set in 1918 and featuring Goth as the younger version of the title character. “Pearl” is still a horror movie, especially during its gory and unsettling climax, but it also borrows from the “women’s pictures” of filmmakers like Douglas Sirk and the tradition of heightened film noir presented in lurid color. Pearl herself dresses in a way that recalls Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz,” which makes her decidedly non-wholesome actions even more horrifying.

Young Pearl lives on the same farm where she and Howard will reside decades later, and she’s already married to Howard, who’s overseas fighting in World War I. She’s stuck with her cold, domineering German immigrant mother Ruth (Tandi Wright) and her invalid father (Matthew Sunderland), who requires constant care. Like Maxine, Pearl dreams of stardom, but she’s also a budding psychopath, casually killing animals before escalating to the kind of murders that viewers have already seen her commit in “X.”

Even so, she’s a sympathetic figure, less pathetic than her older self but still hopelessly lost, with her naïve visions of appearing in films like the ones shown at the picture house in town. That’s where she meets the handsome projectionist (David Corenswet), who talks about his bohemian lifestyle and plans to travel to Europe, and shows her an illicit “stag film,” an earlier version of the porn that Maxine is making in “X.”

The centerpiece of “Pearl” is a bravura eight-minute monologue that Pearl delivers to her sister-in-law Mitsy (Emma Jenkins-Purro), laying out her hopes, dreams and fears even as she confesses to multiple killings. Of the three movies, “Pearl” is the most fully realized showcase for Goth’s acting, and she delivers an intense performance that is equal parts heartbreaking and disturbing.

‘MaXXXine’ brings the trilogy to a satisfying close

Although it received mixed reviews compared to the more widespread positive response to the first two films, “MaXXXine” is just as impressive a stylistic exercise, drawing on giallo movies and erotic thrillers for a story of Hollywood sleaze set in 1985. After emerging from “X” as the traditional slasher-movie final girl, Maxine is now living in Hollywood, attempting to transition from adult films to more mainstream fare, which is how she meets Elizabeth Bender.

Her experience in Texas catches up with her, though, as a mysterious black-gloved killer stalks and kills her fellow porn performers, while a pair of police detectives (Bobby Cannavale and Michelle Monaghan) set their sights on Maxine. Although she’s less of a haunting figure than Pearl, Maxine is still compelling to watch, as she weaponizes her self-confidence to take on film-industry doubters as well as more nefarious adversaries.

After channeling Tobe Hooper for “X” and Douglas Sirk for “Pearl,” West channels Brian De Palma for “MaXXXine,” up to and including De Palma’s penchant for convoluted plots and multiple drawn-out endings. While the third act is a bit shaky, “MaXXXine” is just as much a B-movie with A ideas as its predecessors. West combines genres and eras to create an indelible horror trilogy that is uniquely his own.

We live in the streaming era. What started as a cheaper alternative to traditional cable has turned into something that feels like cable spread across a bunch of different subscriptions.

Getting all the major streaming services, even on the cheaper ad-supported plans, will set you back around $80 per month. If you go with the premium ad-free options, the price skyrockets. Then, if you want one of the top streaming cable services, you'll need to almost double that amount.

Add ESPN for sports and suddenly your monthly bill is more than $160 per month — which is more than most people spent on basic cable when that was still the main way to consume entertainment.

So I decided that rather than picking and choosing which services to keep, I dumped them all and went with a mix of free options and just not watching as many shows and movies as I normally would. I gave myself one month to try it so I could weigh having about $90 in my pocket (I didn't have a streaming cable service to begin with, so there was nothing to drop there) versus the FOMO feeling of not being able to see the new releases.

Here's what happened each week:

No paid streaming: Week 1 (June 21 - June 27)

I started this little test on Sunday, June 21, so I missed out on a lot of content. For example, "House of the Dragon" season 3 debuted on the first day, but fortunately, I haven't watched the first two seasons yet (I planned to wait until the entire series dropped and then go with the binge strategy). "Avatar: The Last Airbender" season 2 also hit, but to be honest, I couldn't care less about it, so I didn't feel like I was missing anything.

The final season of "The Bear" started on June 25, which definitely made me a little sad as I enjoy the show. However, it's not one I'm totally hooked on, so I was able to get by knowing it'll be there later.

"Avatar: Fire and Ash" dropped on June 24, but I actually didn't notice it until the following week, as I was deep in the Scary Movie franchise for week one. "Little Brother" debuted on Netflix at the end of the week, and while I was passively interested in it because I'm a wrestling fan (something else I was unable to watch without a paid service), I didn't feel too awful skipping it.

For the first week, these were the main releases that gave me a little FOMO, but they were pretty minor, especially since Pluto TV brought it hard with some big movies that kept me entertained. With "Scary Movie" dropping in theaters earlier in the month, it added the first five movies in the series for everyone to catch up, and I ripped through all of them (the latter three films aren't the best, but they're still good for a laugh).

Between work, family life and watching kids' content during the day (thankfully, he's 9 and doesn't follow the latest releases, so movies on Pluto TV were satisfying for him), these films were enough to fulfill my watching needs for the week (along with some golf YouTube content before going to bed at night). "The Sheep Detectives" would have probably caught his attention, but thankfully, we saw it in theaters.

Week 1 (June 21-27) difficulty rating (1 being easiest, 10 being hardest):

• 3 - I would have liked to have watched "The Bear" and "Avatar: Fire and Ash," but I could live without them

No paid streaming: Week 2 (June 28-July 4)

Now, this week and next would've been nearly impossible for soccer (football) fans, which I am not. The round of 32 started on June 28, then the round of 16 kicked off on July 4, and the rest of the tournament went on from there. Some games were available for free, but if you wanted to see the finals and the biggest matches, you needed subscriptions. For me, this was a non-issue, but it could've easily been the breaking point for some.

Outside of the biggest sports event that had everyone talking, I realized that "Avatar: Fire and Ash" launched the previous week and I was very much looking forward to watching it. Should I have gone while it was in theaters? Probably. But the fact remains that I didn't, and I was definitely feeling some FOMO not being able to catch it on Disney+.

And then July 1 rolled around, and my sadness increased exponentially: "X-Men ‘97" season 2 dropped on Disney+, and I was left out in the cold.

Another show I was interested in watching before the next season was "Silo" — with season 3 launching on July 3, it seemed like a good time to get in. But I didn't get a chance to watch it before shutting everything down, so there's another show I will be left out of watching for the time being (I'll have to re-up Apple TV at some point to catch it, as I don't see it going to a free service anytime in the future).

So with what I didn't watch out of the way, let's talk about what I did actually watch. Quite simply, I watched a lot of YouTube. I caught up on videos from pretty much every major YouTube golf channel from the past few months that had slipped through the cracks. I watched live concerts of my favorite bands from old-school Woodstock broadcasts to modern pro-shot stuff. I discovered Angine de Poitrine through a random YouTube recommendation.

And I dove into the Pluto library for older movies I might have missed or just wanted to see again. My childhood crush Alicia Silverstone's classic "Clueless" arrived, so I took a trip down memory lane with it. "The Matrix Revolutions," by far the worst movie in the series in my humble opinion, came to Pluto, so I gave it a second chance (I stand by my original opinion; it's a bad, bad, terrible, awful movie). Mix in the requisite kids' movies, and we had an okay week of entertainment for the family while I cried inside about not being able to see "X-Men 97."

Week 2 (June 28-July 4) difficulty:

• 8 - Missing out on "X-Men 97" season 2 hit me hard, and I'm excited for this all to be over so I can go watch it now.

No paid streaming: week 3 (July 5-11)

I'm not going to oversell it here: This week was pretty easy for me. Looking through the new releases from Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ and streaming as a whole, nothing really caught my eye. Sure, I'd normally watch the PGA Tour's Genesis Scottish Open, but it's not a tournament I can't live without (we'll get to that next week).

"Hamnet" looked good, but it's a movie I feel I need to watch. The Netflix doc "Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea" looked interesting, and I'll probably watch it at some point if I ever resubscribe, but if not, I won't lose sleep.

Pluto and YouTube carried me through week three without issue — I watched some of my favorite movies from my teenage years: "Friday" and "Next Friday" (I skipped "Friday After Next" as it's just not very funny). Then, I went even further back, jumping into "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" and "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls." Finally, I tickled my horror fancy with "Pet Sematary (1989)" and "The Cabin In The Woods," a couple of classics.

Week 3 (July 5-11) difficulty:

• 2 - It honestly could be a 1 for this week, but I added a single point because I still really want to watch "X-Men 97."

No paid streaming: Week 4+ (July 12-20)

Everything was going pretty well, with "X-Men '97" being the only release I truly had FOMO over.

And then the middle of July knocked me on my streamless butt with the release of Netflix's "The Hawk" and the airing of the Open, one of the four biggest golf events of the year. Sure, Will Ferrell's "The Hawk" was getting mixed reviews, but after thoroughly enjoying "Stick," the last big golf comedy series (on Apple TV), I really wanted to watch (and review) "The Hawk."

Could I have asked for a media screener? Sure, but that felt just as against the spirit of this test as pirating it. So I suffered through not being able to formulate my own opinion on the show.

How did I deal with the crushing lack of the Open, which broadcast on a mix of NBC Sports, USA Network, Golf Channel and Peacock? I just didn't watch it. It was hard; I don't usually miss any of the big golf tournaments, but I was committed to this experiment. I did listen to the No Laying Up podcast, which recaps the event each day to keep up with what happened, and I watched highlights on social media, but I didn't sit down and watch any of the event live. It was a sad Thursday-Sunday for me, but I made it work.

OK, that's not entirely true. I did get to see a little of the tournament at restaurants. For example, I played golf on Saturday morning, and the event was playing in the clubhouse, so I watched a bit. But it felt more like a tease than a satisfying viewing experience.

Other than that, in week four, I didn't watch much. Maybe the strain of missing two big things I really wanted to see was too much for me, but I just played a lot of Diablo IV. It had an expansion recently and a new season rolled out, so I dug in and leveled up a Barbarian. It was actually quite enjoyable, and it felt good to dive into one of my favorite video games again.

Week 4+ (July 12-20) difficulty:

• 10 - Everyone's difficult week will be different. Maybe "House of the Dragon" was the big release for you, but for me, "The Hawk" on Netflix and The Open made me realize I really can't live without paid streaming services.

No paid streaming: Final thoughts

In the end, not having paid streaming services is kind of a bummer.

FOMO is a very real thing. From live sports events to new movie releases, there's a lot of content out there that people are talking about, and if you're not willing to turn to illegal means (which I wasn't, both because it's illegal and it would kind of defeat the whole point of my test if I could just pirate anything), you will feel like you're not part of things.

So what's my ultimate advice after a month of depriving myself of the latest entertainment? Pick and choose which streaming services to keep each month. It takes a little effort, yes, but Tom's Guide's own Kelly Woo makes it easy with her monthly pieces on which services to cancel based on goodies slated to come to each one.

Obviously, your tastes will vary, and there might be a show or movie that you care about that makes you subscribe, but she'll give you a nice baseline from which you can work.

Obviously, if money is no object and you don't feel like putting in the effort, just subscribe to everything and forget it. But if that's not your situation (it's not mine, for sure), then your best bet is to be smart about what you keep active.

My ultimate conclusion after all this is that the streaming landscape is actually more annoying than cable. Instead of managing cable packages on one service, now we have upwards of 10 different subscriptions to worry about. It's great for the companies; they can nickel and dime us with increases that feel small — a dollar here and 50 cents there — but add up over time.

It feels like we're rapidly approaching a breaking point where there are just too many streaming services available, and people are going to get frustrated; I sure did, it's the whole reason I did this test.

But unless the cancellations happen in large numbers, nothing will change, and we'll be stuck jumping between multiple services to keep up with the content we want. Sure, you can survive with the ad-based freebies out there, but it's hardly ideal.

This week’s selection of top new movies across the best streaming services is another busy one with plenty of options on popular platforms including Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Peacock and more.

Thriller fans are spoilt for choice with several worthwhile picks, including “A Private Life,” which sees Jodie Foster deliver a powerhouse performance entirely in French, and a new shark survival movie on Prime Video (we’re fully in shark movie season right now). But those looking for lighter watches should consider “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” on Peacock.

There’s plenty of new movies to talk about this week, so I’ve rounded up the most noteworthy arrivals across platforms down below. Plus, here’s a guide to the top new TV shows this week, if you want to binge-watch.

‘Supergirl’ (PVOD)

The second feature film in James Gunn’s DC Extended Universe didn’t manage to capture the attention of comic book fans like “Superman." In fact, “Supergirl” proved to be anything but super at the box office, grossing an underwhelming $124 million against a production budget reportedly north of $170 million. Ouch! Just a month after release, it’s swapping the big screen for streaming, where it’ll hope to find a larger audience.

Based on the fan-favorite “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic book, Milly Alcock plays the eponymous heroine, also known as Kara Zor-El. Unlike her cousin, Clark Kent, she hasn’t taken to being a world-saving hero. Supergirl spends her days wandering between planets and visiting dive bars. But she’s forced to adopt the hero lifestyle when a ruthless villain emerges. She teams up with a young survivor (Eve Ridley) to dish out some justice.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ (Hulu)

20 years after the original strutted the catwalk, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” brings viewers back to the world of Runway magazine, luxurious designer fashion and the iconic, almost impossible-to-please editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). This long-requested follow-up is your classic legacy sequel, reuniting the original cast (including Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci), and making more than a few nods to how much time has passed since the first “Devil Wears Prada."

With the magazine business no longer in its heyday, the frosty editor-in-chief of fashion mag Runway, Miranda Priestly (Streep), is reluctantly forced to turn to her former assistant, Andy Sachs (Hathaway) for help. As the pair navigate the evolving world of print publishing, they face competition from an old colleague, Emily Charlton (Blunt). Meanwhile, Miranda’s right-hand man, Nigel (Stanley Tucci), offers his wisdom.

‘The Devil’s Mouth’ (Prime Video)

Another week, another shark movie hits streaming. The toothy thrillers served up so far this summer haven’t been of the highest quality, so here’s hoping that “The Devil’s Mouth” can buck the trend and deliver some genuine scares. While the casting of Kathryn Newton and Lana Condor offers hope it could be a cut above the low-quality shark movies already released this summer, it also comes from Jeff Wadlow, the director behind “Fantasy Island,” Kick-Ass 2,” and “Imaginary,” and those movies stink!

In “The Devil’s Mouth,” a group of five college friends signs up for a guided tour through an underwater cave system from which the movie takes its title. They plan to have one last big adventure before entering the “real world.” But what was supposed to be an unforgettable trip becomes memorable for a sinister reason when they're trapped in the submerged caves and discover there’s a bull shark swimming in the dark waters.

‘A Private Life’ (Netflix)

My colleague, Malcolm McMillan, claims this mystery thriller is “worth watching for Jodie Foster’s performance alone,” and was impressed that she portrays an American in Paris while speaking entirely in French.

I knew Foster was talented, but giving an awards-nominated performance in a second language is truly commendable. Her acclaimed work in “A Private Life” saw Foster become the first American to be nominated for a Lumière Award for Best Actress. So long as you can handle subtitles, then this thriller should be on your Netflix watchlist this week.

Dr. Lilian Steiner (Foster) is an American psychiatrist working and living in the French capital. She’s devastated to learn that a client has taken her own life. But after a visit from the client's widow, Simon (Mathieu Amalric), and daughter, Valérie (Luàna Bajrami), alongside the discovery that some of her files have been stolen, Lilian suspects foul play. Launching an investigation of her own, she becomes convinced this is a murder case.

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ (Peacock)

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is a pure sugar-rush explosion of iconic characters, colorful animation and big action-packed moments. In all the chaos, it neglects to spin much of a story (perhaps that's appropriate for a Mario movie). However, younger viewers will delight in the playful nature of Mario and pals’ latest adventure. Though I expect the majority of older watchers will find it very much a one-and-done watching experience.

Inspired by the popular “Super Mario Galaxy” video game on the Nintendo Wii, this sequel to the 2023 movie sees Mario (voiced again by Chris Pratt) take to the cosmos to assist Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson), who has been taken prisoner by Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie). Along for the ride are Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key). However, it's Jack Black’s Bowser who again steals the show.

‘The Drama’ (HBO Max)

“The Odyssey” hype is flowing with no signs of slowing down, which makes now a great time to watch “The Drama.” This darkly funny romantic comedy stars two of “The Odyssey’s” cast members, Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, and ranks as one of my favorite films of the year to date. It’s not your typical feel-good rom-com, instead trading in awkward humor, but it’s sharply written, and Pattinson and Zendaya both bring their A-game.

Charlie (Pattinson) and Emma (Zendaya) are a happy couple preparing for their impending wedding. All seems perfect until an “unexpected revelation” days before they’re due to say “I do.” This sends their relationship into a tailspin, as they are forced to confront whether they truly know each other, and if their romance is built to last. I’ll say no more, because watching this spoiler-free enhances the viewing experience.

‘Over Your Dead Body’ (AMC+)

“Over Your Dead Body” is in something of a similar mold to “The Drama”; it’s also a dark comedy about two people in a relationship that is anything but blissful. To add further intrigue, this movie also incorporates action-thriller elements, delivering a strong package of complementary genres. It’s also an American remake of a Norwegian movie called “The Trip,” but unlike some remakes, this one wasn’t branded a lazy, pointless cash-in.

Dan (Jason Segel) and Lisa (Samara Weaving) are a once-happy couple, heading towards an acrimonious split. Traveling to a remote cabin for the weekend, this getaway isn’t going to fix the cracks in their relationship, as they both harbor secret plans to murder the other. These plans are thrown into chaos when their weekend is crashed by strangers, forcing Dan and Lisa to pivot on the fly and maybe even team up to survive the trip.

Over the past couple of years, between price hikes and shifting priorities, even the best streaming services have become more akin to cable TV with prices to match, especially at the higher "ad-free" tiers.

Almost every streaming service, save Apple TV, has multiple subscription tiers, including one with advertisements. These ad-supported memberships tend to be less expensive than the higher tiers and in some cases offer fewer features, like a lack of live sports or no downloads.

With that in mind, how often are advertisements interrupting your movies or TV shows? We tested seven of the major platforms to find out.

Tom's Guide testing process

We tested seven streaming platforms with the same process for both movies and TV shows.

These are the streamers I looked at:

• Disney+
• HBO Max
• Hulu
• Netflix
• Paramount+
• Peacock
• Prime Video

We tried to test out shows and movies of similar lengths within five minutes on either side. For movies, we watched films that were 2 hours long. For shows, we tried to find two episodes of about 60 minutes each, within five minutes.

We charted how many advertising breaks were inserted into the media, including starting ads. We also tracked how much added time the advertisements added to the overall runtime of the shows and movies.

Movie advertising

Surprisingly, how platforms break up their movies varies wildly between the number of breaks and how much added time they have.

If you want to avoid advertisements, Paramount+ and Peacock may be the way to go with only one ad roll at the start of the movies and nothing while it plays.

Here's how it broke down:

Netflix had the most ad breaks with nine, but those breaks were typically only 30 to 45 seconds with one or two commercials.

HBO Max had five ad breaks, but like Netflix, they only totaled two minutes. There were a couple of times during "Howl's Moving Castle" when I looked away and almost missed a couple.

The longest ads came from Prime Video, which only had four ad breaks but each one typically lasted around a minute and a half. It added over eight minutes to the process.

Disney+ was close behind with five ad breaks that added seven minutes and 45 seconds to "Fantastic Four: First Steps."

We're not doing winners and losers with these tests, but Paramount+ and Peacock waste your time the least and actually let you watch the movie.

TV show advertising

Unlike movies, most streaming services insert the same number of ad breaks in shows — between four and five, including ads that run before the show starts. The big difference lies in the added time.

For this test, we picked a series and watched the first two episodes of the show as long as they were in the 55- to 60-minute range.

Here's how it shook out:

Of the streaming platforms, Disney+ comes out the worst again.

I will note that I was only able to sign up for Hulu and Disney+ as a bundle. The Disney platform is a mess, and Hulu stuff is jumbled in with Disney content, which can be quite annoying when you're trying to find just Disney titles or just Hulu titles. Even clicking the Disney+ tab still sees Hulu shows or movies shoved into the different panels.

I specifically watched the Disney+ original series "The Punisher" for this test, and found between the first two episodes an average of over eight minutes of added runtime. Paramount+ was second worst with exactly eight minutes of added time between the two episodes of "Halo" I watched.

During the Paramount test, I got an error code during the second episode of "Halo," and the ads all disappeared. I did check out "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and "Dutton Ranch" just in case and got similar results, though those shows' episodes don't exactly hit 60 minutes.

Netflix may be the best value at only two minutes added time per episode. While watching the recently canceled "The Boroughs," there were only four ad breaks, but they varied in length. One was a minute, but the shortest was a quick 15 seconds.

How much the ad-supported subscriptions costs

If you're considering downgrading or signing up for one of the ad-supported tiers, they cost about the same across every platform, save the Disney+ and Hulu bundle, which combines both for $12.99 a month.

Here's what watching all those ads will cost you:

Some services like HBO Max and Peacock offer annual subscriptions, which will save you a dollar or so per month. Plus, Amazon Prime Video comes with a Prime subscription if you subscribe to that for $139 a year or $14.99 per month.

Otherwise, beyond HBO, most platforms cost $8.99 for the ad-supported subscription. Peacock is the cheapest at $7.99 by itself.

If I hadn’t been so impressed with “Dying for Sex,” I might not have paid much attention to “Furious,” the new crime thriller series on Hulu from “Dying for Sex” co-creator Elizabeth Meriwether. What looks like yet another streaming series about a troubled detective solving a brutal crime becomes a much more nuanced, insightful and even funny show in Meriwether’s hands.

“Dying for Sex” effectively balanced incredibly heavy material about a woman dying of cancer with lighthearted explorations of sexuality and joyous celebrations of friendship, and while nothing in “Furious” could ever be described as lighthearted, it achieves a similar tonal and thematic balance.

Meriwether also created the sitcom “New Girl,” and it’s not impossible to envision a slightly toned-down version of rookie FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) as an offbeat acquaintance of the characters on “New Girl.” Alice’s quirks are darker than anything that would show up on a sitcom, but they manifest in an acerbic wit and a low tolerance for people who underestimate her.

Despite spending a decade in the NYPD, she’s still treated as the new girl at the FBI, and stumbling across the case of a potential serial killer offers her the chance to prove she knows what she’s doing. The subsequent investigation is equal parts thrilling and harrowing, with plenty of suspense alongside a bleak glimpse into the way the rich and powerful casually abuse young women.

‘Furious’ puts a smart spin on a familiar genre

The basic set-up for “Furious” is nothing particularly novel. In her first assignment at the FBI, Alice is stuck at the bottom rung of the ladder, answering the phones for the FBI’s general public number, which mostly involves talking to paranoid weirdos. She catches a break when her former NYPD colleague Danny (Scoot McNairy) calls her to the scene of a high-profile murder, the son of billionaire Jay Easton (Peter McRobbie). Although it looks like an accidental overdose, Alice and Danny quickly determine that Easton’s son was deliberately drugged, and it’s not long before they connect his death to another killing.

So it’s the FBI tracking a serial killer, just like in dozens of other shows. “Furious” isn’t really a mystery, though, because it begins by showing Catherine Grace (Lola Petticrew) administering the lethal dose to her victim, and continues to follow her as she kills more people. There are some secrets to be revealed over the course of the eight-episode season, but for the most part “Furious” is about how its two central female characters go about their parallel missions, and the way their harsh experiences have affected their lives.

That’s where Meriwether’s unique creative perspective comes into play. Both Alice and Catherine are complex, multilayered characters, whose backgrounds intertwine in depressingly similar ways. They’ve taken opposite paths from that shared trauma, though, and one of the most rewarding themes of “Furious” is its exploration of how different people process mistreatment.

The characters make ‘Furious’ distinctive

Alice’s mentor in the FBI’s sex crimes division is Nora (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), a hardened veteran who points out that victims of abuse often become the most vicious abusers. “We become evil to fight evil,” she tells Alice in a later episode, and both of them have to figure out a way to hold onto their humanity as they directly confront horrifically inhumane acts.

That’s difficult for Alice, who was beaten by her longtime cop boyfriend (Jake Lacy) and starts to sympathize with Catherine’s apparent mission to get revenge on her own abusers. Although Catherine is ruthless and often sadistic in her methods, she’s not picking random targets: Everyone she’s going after was a participant in the trafficking and exploitation of underage girls for sex.

Catherine isn’t just an evil serial killer; she’s the kind of person the audience might root for in another context. Her victims aren’t particularly sympathetic, and Petticrew makes her appealingly snarky and vindictive. Alice is equally engaging, although she’s more sullen and withdrawn, preferring to keep her emotions bottled up. Rossum’s performance is raw and affecting, even when she has to deal with some unfortunate plot contrivances in the later episodes.

McNairy is endearing and grounded as the eternally patient Danny, whose unwavering support for Alice contrasts with the way that Nora challenges her. Bernstine brings biting wit to her portrayal of an agent who’s grown bitter and cynical after all the terrible things she’s seen, but finds renewed purpose thanks to Alice’s tenacity in joining her unit and pursuing the case.

Verdict: ‘Furious’ is a superior crime thriller

Although there may be one too many convenient developments as the story goes on, overall “Furious” is a gripping, thoughtful story about murder, corruption, and the ability of the rich and connected to get away with nearly anything. It’s sometimes hard to watch, especially as Alice and her colleagues face the uncomfortable truths about the way the world works, but that darkness is always tempered by a sense of humor and genuine warmth among the main characters.

The season ends with a tease for Alice and Nora to work on future cases, but it’s hard to imagine Meriwether coming up with an angle as compelling as the back-and-forth between Alice and Catherine. Like “Dying for Sex,” “Furious” tells a devastating but satisfying story, and it leaves the audience with the right balance of hope and, well, fury.

For more adult viewers, there's a new season of animated favorite "Futurama," as well as a pulpy new prep-school program from the Ryan Murphy camp, based on the 2023 horror novel by Bret Easton Ellis.

'Futurama' season 14

The folks behind the long-running animated sitcom — which follows a New York City pizza delivery boy (voiced by Billy West) who accidentally freezes himself in 1999 and gets defrosted in the year 3000 to find himself surrounded by hard-drinking robots, lovely cyclops and the like — promise "a non-stop onslaught of swaggering space pirates, lab-grown meats and sexy scams" in the upcoming fourteenth season of "Futurama," which premieres with two episodes on Monday, August 3. (Episodes will then be released one-at-a-time every subsequent Monday.) Along with West, the original voice cast will be back, including Katey Segal and John DiMaggio.

'The Shards'

Based on Bret Easton Ellis' semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, FX's "The Shards" comes courtesy of Ellis himself as well as Ryan Murphy, so you know some campy TV fun is in your future if you choose to tune into the new teen thriller. Premiering August 5 on Hulu, the 1980s-set series follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite Los Angeles prep school whose universe gets rattled by a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere), whose arrival unsettlingly coincides with the activities of a serial killer known as The Trawler. The cast also includes Kaia Gerber, Wes Bentley, Graham Campbell, Hayes Warner and Igby Rigney as Bret Easton Ellis.

'Camp Rock 3'

OG "Camp Rock" fans are now well and grown, but they can introduce a whole new generation to the movie-musical franchise with the long-awaited sequel "Camp Rock 3," which arrives 16 years in the making (yes, 16!) on August 14. The latest chapter of the trilogy sees original stars Jonas Brothers and Maria Canals-Barrera reprise their roles from the previous films, starring alongside Sherry Cola, Liamani Segura, and Malachi Barton.

When the opening act for Connect 3 cancels at the last minute, the band decides to return to their beloved Camp Rock and host a competition to find new talent to join their national tour. Talented campers are soon ruthlessly vying for the chance to join the group's reunion tour, testing friendships, stoking tensions and leading to unexpected alliances.

Hulu is a great streaming service if you're looking for new shows to binge this weekend. It features a deep library of series from a range of Disney-owned networks, including FX, ABC and 20th Television. It also has tons of original hit shows that you don't want to miss. As per usual, this week, I've put together a list of three newly-added shows perfect for adding to your weekend watchlist.

First up is "King of the Hill" season 15. No, your eyes don't deceive you. There's a new season of the iconic adult animated comedy series, and you can binge it all right now. Once you're done, it's time to start binging "Snowpiercer" seasons 1-4. This adaptation of Bong Joon-ho's 2013 post-apocalyptic thriller may not be quite as good as the movie, but it has a devoted fan base and is worth checking out this weekend. Finally, "Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston" is a new National Geographic docuseries that debuted just yesterday (July 23). If you want Marvel's Loki to talk to you about a devastated ancient Roman city, then this show is certainly a must-watch.

'King of the Hill' season 15

Genre: Adult animated sitcom series

What's it about? "King of the Hill" is back on Hulu for another season. This time, the residents of Arlen, Texas, are dealing with a host of new challenges. Relationships, learning to golf and dealing with retirement are just a few of the things Hank Hill (Mike Judge) and his extended friends and family will have to contend with across 10 new episodes.

Why you should watch it: I'm not typically one for a reboot or revival. But season 14 of this iconic series was one of my favorite shows of 2025. So I'm going to be eagerly awaiting these new episodes while working my way through the past 14 seasons.

'Snowpiercer' seasons 1-4

Genre: Post-apocalyptic dystopian thriller series

What's it about? This post-apocalyptic show takes place seven years after Earth became a frozen wasteland. It follows the passengers of the Snowpiercer, a gigantic train that constantly circles the globe while carrying the remnants of humanity.

Why you should watch it: "Snowpiercer" actually is set in 2026, which is a bit unnerving. Especially as its themes of class warfare and social injustice are more relevant than ever in our own version of 2026. The 2013 movie is admittedly better than this series adaptation, but lead performances from Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs make it still worth watching.

'Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston'

Genre: Docuseries

What's it about? In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted. Within a day, the Roman city of Pompeii was entombed in ash. In "Pompeii: Out Of Time," Tom Hiddleston follows the trails of a teenage apprentice, a powerful businesswoman and a mysterious Praetorian Guard, piecing together how each potential survivor of this epic disaster confronted a series of impossible choices.

Why you should watch it: Part investigative documentary filmmaking and part scripted dramatic reenactments, this series is highly likely to be entertaining. Having Tom Hiddleston as the host won't hurt either.

Hulu is an excellent choice for building your next weekend movie marathon. The streaming service regularly adds both originals and classics to its library. Plus, because it's owned by Disney, it's the home for new releases from several Disney-owned studios. It even has deals with some other studios to get new releases before any other service, whether they're produced by Disney or not.

This weekend, I'm choosing one of this year's most critically-beloved new releases. "Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie" came out in February and was a huge hit with critics and audiences alike. I'll be adding it to my watchlist this weekend.

Speaking of movies about Canadians, 2024's "Saturday Night" is also arriving on Hulu this week. Finally, "They Fight" is a Hulu original boxing movie starring André Holland and Wendell Pierce. It debuted just last week, so it's still quite new to the streaming service.

'A Real Pain' (2024)

Genre: Comedy movie

What's it about? "Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie" stars Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol. These two form the band, Nirvanna the Band, and the band's singular goal is to play a show at the Rivoli in their hometown of Toronto. That plan gets complicated when they accidentally travel back in time to 2008.

Why you should watch it: Does this movie rip off "Hot Tub Time Machine"? Arguably, yes, but it's a far more cerebral film than the movie that gave us "Great white buffalo." That said, it also manages to be good, dumb fun, and whether or not you've seen the web series that inspired it, you'll almost certainly have a good time.

'Saturday Night' (2024)

Genre: Biographical comedy drama movie

What's it about? "Saturday Night" chronicles the start of the now-legendary "Saturday Night Live." Specifically, the literal first show on Oct. 11, 1975. It's absolute chaos, and it's unclear until the very end if the show will work or if NBC boss David Tebet (Willem Dafoe) will pull it from the air and replace it with a rerun of Johnny Carson.

Why you need to watch it: This movie is good in its own right, even if it's somewhat of a nostalgia play. But the reason to watch it is the loaded ensemble cast. There are so many talented actors from numerous generations; I literally couldn't list them all if I tried. That said, most praise from critics was heaped on Gabriel LaBelle, who leads the call sheet as "SNL" creator Lorne Michaels.

'They Fight' (2026)

Genre: Sports drama movie

What's it about? Walt (André Holland) is an ex-con trying to reform. It's a struggle until he returns to the boxing gym he had left behind. Now, he's found a purpose: taking this rag-tag group of teenage boys to the Junior National Championships.

Why you need to watch it: I love a boxing movie, and I love Wendell Pierce, who runs the gym that Walt is helping out at. So I'm an easy sell on this movie. But don't sleep on Holland either. He's put in more than a few excellent rounds in his career so far, and this could be another knockout performance.
