Moana's back, and this time she's bringing her infectious energy into the real world. "Hamilton" director Thomas Kail makes his feature debut with a live-action remake of Disney's 2016 animated hit.

Starring Catherine Laga'aia in her first film role, Dwayne Johnson, John Tui, Frankie Adams, Rena Owen and Jemaine Clement, this island-hopping musical is playing in theaters right now. But how long will it be before you can watch it from the comfort of your own couch?

Since it just hit theaters, "Moana" isn't available on any of the best streaming services just yet. Here's the good news, though: Based on Disney's recent release patterns, we can make a solid guess about when you'll be able to rent, buy and stream it at home. If you're curious about when you should start planning for a movie night, we've got the answers right here. Keep reading to find out.

When can we expect 'Moana' to arrive on streaming?

As of right now, "Moana" is still in theaters after opening nationwide on July 10. If you'd rather hold out for a home release, though, you probably won't wait as long as you might think.

Disney doesn't rush to get its movies on digital, but it's settled into a rhythm you can nearly set a watch by. For a live-action adaptation like this one, the studio usually keeps films in theaters for about eight weeks before sending them to premium video-on-demand (PVOD), and it almost always makes the drop on a Tuesday. "Snow White" got 53 days. "Lilo & Stitch" got 60.

That puts "Moana" on track to reach digital rental and purchase platforms like Amazon and Apple TV in early September 2026, with September 1 and September 8 as two dates to mark on your calendar as potential debut dates.

Physical media follows an even tighter schedule. Both "Snow White" and "Lilo & Stitch" arrived on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD exactly 95 days after opening, which would land "Moana" around October 13. Disney tends to announce the digital date only a week or two ahead.

As for streaming by subscription, "Moana" has a guaranteed home on Disney+, because Disney owns it. It's important to note that Disney's recent release windows have moved with the box office. "Lilo & Stitch," which crossed $1 billion worldwide, took 103 days. "Snow White," which flopped, went to Disney+ after just 82 days.

The live-action "Moana" opened with a disappointing box office haul, roughly $45 million domestically against projections closer to $65 million, which argues for the shorter runway. Expect it on Disney+ somewhere between late September and late October 2026.

For now, renting or buying digitally will be the fastest way to watch at home once that window opens. If you need to see it before then, you're making a trip to the theater. But you can always stream the original on Disney+ right now.

What is 'Moana' about?

"Moana" follows the teenage daughter of a Polynesian chief (Catherine Laga'aia), who's next in line to lead the island of Motunui. She's spent her whole life being told by her father (John Tui), never to sail past the reef.

When the fish vanish from the lagoon and the coconut groves start to rot, her grandmother Tala (Rena Owen) hands her the heart of the goddess Te Fiti and tells her the truth: their people were voyagers, and the island is dying because a demigod stole the heart a thousand years ago.

That demigod is Maui (Dwayne Johnson), stranded on a rock and missing the magical fishhook that gave him his powers. Moana drags him back out onto the water to put the heart back where it belongs, which means getting past a treasure-hoarding crab named Tamatoa (Jemaine Clement) and the lava demon who marooned Maui there in the first place.

Disney+ may soon offer a free tier to compete with YouTube and entice viewers to stay on the streaming service. Adam Smith, Disney's chief product and technology officer, pitched the idea during a company town hall this week. It seems to be one of several ideas Disney is considering to bring in potential customers (h/t Business Insider).

Importantly, there are currently no indications of what shows or movies would be included in this potential free tier of Disney+. Like most streamers, the House of Mouse is trying to figure out how to capture more viewers and their eyeballs. Netflix has even reportedly started testing out the return of free trials, something that would have been unthinkable a year ago.

The rise of YouTube

Despite seeing subscriber growth in the last year, platforms like Netflix and Disney+ remain firmly behind YouTube when it comes to viewership. The most recent Nielsen data shows YouTube with 13.4% TV watch-time compared to Disney+, which had 9.4% in the summer of 2025.

Meanwhile, data from DemandSage shows Netflix topped 325 million subscribers by the end of 2025, a 25 million subscriber increase from 2024. Disney+, conversely, is recovering from a massive drop in 2024, though it still has over 125 million subscribers, per Statista.

Of course, the biggest hurdle in growing subscriber bases for these streaming services is the several price hikes across every streaming service over the last two years. The cost of streaming in 2026 is already more expensive than in years past. Netflix just raised prices again in March, and Disney+ bumped its rates in September of last year.

The big streamers are clearly experimenting. Earlier this year, Disney+ announced "microcontent" and "Verts" (short-form vertical video content) to pull attention away from TikTok and Instagram Reels. Netflix debuted its own vertical videos in April and won't stop recommending video podcasts.

We're more than halfway through 2026 (wild!), and with the beginning of July comes a fresh slate of film titles and television shows to the industry's streaming services. Hulu and Disney+ are two of the biggest names in the streaming game, so it's not a surprise that both are welcoming brilliant new shows and movies to their respective libraries this month.

July kicks off with the sophomore season of "X-Men '97," a direct continuation of the beloved "X-Men: The Animated Series" from the 1990s, which will catch up with our merry band of mutant superheroes after that explosive season 1 finale. Later in the month, history buffs and Tom Hiddleston fans will no doubt enjoy Nat Geo's new docudrama "Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston," which delves into the Mount Vesuvius eruption. And capping off the month is a new crime thriller "Furious," led by "Shameless" star Emmy Rossum as an FBI agent doggedly investigating the crimes of a cunning female serial killer.

'X-Men '97' season 2

Marvel Animation’s revival of the 1990s-era "X-Men: The Animated Series" continues this July with its second season, kicking off on Disney+ with a three-episode premiere on the first day of the month.

The upcoming episodes find the heroic mutant team — including Cyclops (Ray Chase), Jean Gray (Jennifer Hale), Magneto (Matthew Waterson), Storm (Alison Sealy-Smith), Wolverine (Cal Dodd) and Rogue (Lenore Zann), among others — divided and scattered through time, some in the past (from the start of Apocalypse's reign) and others in the future (at the height of his rule).

Meanwhile, back in the '90s, "suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence,” per the official season two description.

'Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston'

Host Tom Hiddleston plays time detective in this three-part National Geographic docudrama, which will be available to stream on both Hulu and Disney Plus. Blending "cinematic scripted drama and investigative documentary storytelling," the series will transport audiences to ancient Rome in the hours before and during the staggering eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

With input from archaeologists, historians, geologists and disaster experts, Hiddleston and Co. piece together stories of real Pompeians caught up in the disaster, including a teenage apprentice, a powerful businesswoman and a mysterious Praetorian Guard. The series "reframes Pompeii not as a story of destruction but as a human drama of resilience, sacrifice and survival," per the official synopsis.

'Furious'

From creator, writer and executive producer Elizabeth Meriwether ("The Dropout," "Dying for Sex") comes this crime thriller starring Emmy Rossum as Alice Black, a determined FBI agent on the hunt for an elusive, calculating female serial killer, played by Lola Petticrew.

"Both walk their own paths toward justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur," reads the series logline. YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream subscribers may be eligible for payment from an antitrust class action lawsuit brought against the Walt Disney Company. The lawsuit claimed that the mega corporation forced YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream to raise subscription prices.

The lawsuit alleged that the claims violated state and federal antitrust and consumer protection laws. Disney settled the case, agreeing to $50 million, though the company denies any wrongdoing, per a report from AL.com.

From court documents I could discover, this lawsuit has been making its way through the court system since at least 2022. And despite the name, the settlement website does appear legitimate.

It comes at an interesting time, as YouTube TV and Disney had a seemingly bitter contract negotiation in late 2025 that briefly saw multiple Disney-owned channels, including ABC and ESPN, disappear from the service. The network carriage bundle ultimately led Google to introduce genre-based subscription bundles, which are cheaper than the current $82 all-in subscription.

Who is eligible?

Per the Online TV settlement website, anyone who had a YouTube TV or DirecTV Stream subscription between April 1, 2019 and March 31, 2026 are eligible for the settlement.

There are two groups who are eligible, "Repealer Jurisdictions" and "Non-repealer Jurisdictions." Repealers include anyone located in Alabama, California, New York, Florida and 36 other states. The full list can be found in this document on page 3. Non-Repealers include anyone living in any other U.S. state or territory.

To claim a portion of the settlement, you must submit a valid claim form by September 8, 2026. Exact details on payout amounts do not appear to be finalized.

If you want to exclude yourself, you must do so by that same date. That request must be mailed to the settlement administrator at Biddle v. Disney, Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 4720, Portland, OR 97208-4720.

A final hearing is scheduled for January 14, 2027, when a judge will approve or not the settlement. If approved, payments would be distributed after that hearing. Typically, these kinds of settlements must be paid in a specific window, usually 90 days.

It should be noted that Fubo TV is part of the lawsuit and apparently has not settled with Disney. That portion of the lawsuit is ongoing.

Disney+ Australia pricing is getting a revamp... in the form of two price hikes and a brand-new affordable tier.

To appeal to budget-conscious viewers, Disney+ has launched a new ad-supported subscription tier alongside its existing Standard and Premium tiers in Australia. The new plan is priced at AU$9.99 per month, which, according to our research, aligns with the average for an ad-supported tier (commonly known as "Basic" or "Standard with Ads") across streaming services in Australia.

The new tier introduction isn't totally surprising for Disney+ — the streamer has already introduced ad-supported tiers in other global markets like the U.S. — but the change comes with a downside for existing subscribers: the Standard and Premium tiers are receiving a price hike.

Standard monthly subscribers will see their plans increase from AU$15.99p/m to AU$17.99p/m, with annual subs increasing to AU$179.99p/y from AU$159.99p/y. Premium plans will increase from AU$20.99 to AU$24.99 monthly, and from AU$219.99 to AU$249.99 yearly.

This is the second price increase in the last 18 months, with the Premium tier increasing by AU$4 in March last year to accommodate new content inclusions from major hubs like ESPN and Hulu.

Disney+ states that this new hike will allow it to "continue to curate an extensive collection of global content, award-winning originals, and quality storytelling" for consumers. Some of the latest additions to Disney+'s content lineup include the live stream of The Devil Wears Prada 2 world premiere and the upcoming NBA Finals.

New tier features and trade-offs

For those with tighter purse strings, Disney+'s new offering could be worth the switch if you can't swallow the new price of your existing tier.

Crucially, like other basic streaming tiers, Disney+'s latest plan will have limited ads per viewing, which is beyond tolerable if you've ever endured an hour of ad-filled cable television. However, unlike ad-supported tiers offered by Binge and Netflix, Disney+ will have two concurrent streams, which is perfect for families or those who share streaming accounts.

When it comes to inclusions, the Standard with Ads tier is on par with the existing Standard tier, so Disney+ isn't skimping when it comes to quality. The tier streams in 1080p HD resolution and up to 5.1 audio quality, which is consistent with most standard streaming plans. The only downside of the ad-supported tier is that there are no content downloads for offline viewing or access to higher 4K resolution or Dolby Atmos audio, which are exclusive to the Premium tier.

That said, at the time of writing, Disney+'s cheapest plan doesn't offer an annual subscription. However, the streamer offers an annual subscription for both Standard and Premium tiers, which could be more cost-effective than a monthly subscription if you have multiple users and more screens to stream on.

If you had told me twenty years ago that the sequel to my favourite film ever would be officially making its runway debut, I would have cried. And if you told me that one of the best streaming services, Disney+, would be airing its world premiere, I probably would have cried harder.

That's right — the impeccably styled, yet equally savage 2006 comedy, "The Devil Wears Prada", has joined the reboot gang with a long-awaited sequel hitting theaters on April 30. However, ten days earlier, on April 20, the stars of the franchise will hit the red carpet for the world premiere at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Fortunately for those of us without an exclusive invite to the star-studded event, Disney+ is delivering fans a front-row seat in a special livestream of the premiere, starting at 5:30pm EST / 10:30pm GMT / April 21 7:30am AEST. And if you can't stream it live, a full replay will be available following the event.

This fun live experience is sure to delight longtime fans of the original film, and will feature celebrity arrivals, cast interviews, special surprises and of course, jaw-dropping fashion moments. The film's talented cast and filmmakers will be in attendance, including the queen herself, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, and Caleb Hearon.

The only catch? You'll need a Disney+ subscription to catch every runway-ready detail.

What next for Runway magazine?

Unless you have a photographic memory of every iconic moment that happens in "The Devil Wears Prada", here's a quick refresher. The beloved 2006 film follows Andy (Anne Hathaway), an aspiring journalist hired as a personal assistant for the infamous Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine.

Andy doesn't quite fit in with the Runway clique but ends up taking it (and her job) by storm. Without divulging too many plot points, by the end of the film, Andy is hired by a newspaper as a journalist, ending her employment with Miranda. And unbeknownst to Andy, Miranda tells Andy's new boss that he'd be an idiot not to hire her.

As for what we know about the new sequel, and from the looks of the trailer, it's sure to be a riot. As per the logline, Andy returns to Runway as Miranda navigates a new media landscape and Runway's position within it. They reconnect with another former assistant, Emily (Emily Blunt), who is now the head of a luxury brand that possesses funding which could ensure Runway's survival.

In case you need me between now and April 30, I'll be busy rewatching the original film at least 50 times in the next two weeks. And in the famous words of Miranda Priestly, "That's all."

If you're hoping to see more of Maul, you're in luck: "Maul - Shadow Lord" won't be a one-and-done show. Before the first season even premiered, Lucasfilm confirmed on StarWars.com that he'd be continuing his journey in "Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord" season 2.

If you're hoping for any other info about what that second season will look like, as Lucasfilm hasn't shared any story details. "Ahead of the series premiere, creator and executive producer Dave Filoni has announced the continuation of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord with confirmation of Season 2 in the works from Lucasfilm Animation. Season 1 debuts on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere on Monday," was all the announcement said.

With that in mind, we'll just have to see where "Maul - Shadow Lord" takes the former Sith Lord by tuning into the rest of season 1.

Before "Star Wars" heads back to the big screen for the first time in seven years with "The Mandalorian & Grogu" next month, Disney+ has taken us back to a galaxy far, far away for a new chapter in one of the dark side's most iconic faces: "Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord."

Full disclosure: The animated "Star Wars" shows have always been something I meant to get around to streaming, but I've just never found the time amongst keeping up with everything else I need to stream each week, so my "Star Wars" experience to date has been limited to live-action and an occasional comic or book.

That said, since the trailer looked cool, and voice actor Sam Witwer promised over on X that you didn't need to do any "Star Wars" homework to enjoy this new release, and seeing as I always thought Maul was an intriguing figure, I decided this would be the time I'd finally take the plunge.

Having had the opportunity to stream the first two episodes ahead of the show's two-part premiere on Disney+, I'm pleased that I finally did — you can read my "Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord" review below to find out why.

What is 'Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord' about?

"Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord" is set after the events of "The Clone Wars" and sees the former Sith Lord (voiced by Sam Witwer) touching down on a planet untouched by the Empire, bent on rebuilding his criminal syndicate (and searching for a new apprentice). There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan, who could well be the perfect person to help aid him in his relentless pursuit of revenge...

In addition to Sam Witwer, the "Maul - Shadow Lord" voice cast also features Richard Ayoade, Gideon Adlon, Wagner Moura, Vanessa Marshall, and Dennis Haysbert, among others.

'Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord' has me hooked already — here's why

When I finished watching the second episode, the first thought I had was simply that I must have been missing out by not checking out the animated "Star Wars" stories, as this two-episode premiere was engrossing stuff.

These first two chapters seemingly have two primary functions: set the story in motion, and dole out some eye-catching action — and the show does both well. The breezy half-hour episodes pack in a decent amount of story and action, and despite not being up to speed on "The Clone Wars," I think I've been fed enough about Maul's machinations to know for sure that I want to see what's coming next.

It helps that the show looks as nice in motion as it does, too; even if things had gotten off to a slower start, I'd still be recommending the show on the strength of its atmosphere and visuals. The team has succeeded in placing us within a seedier-feeling corner of the galaxy, one that's dramatically lit, dominated often by striking, Sith-red imagery, and boasts a brooding, droning score to match. It looks great in motion, too, especially in the bursts of blaster fire and lightsaber swinging.

Beyond the show's presentation, though, the single biggest thing I want to point out is how I've become an instant fan of Witwer's performance. Given my experience of Maul is basically limited to thinking the character was damn cool when I saw that "The Phantom Menace" brawl as a kid or being surprised to see him during that "Solo" cameo, I wasn't sure how much I'd be interested in him as a lead character — but I couldn't have been more wrong.

Witwer's Maul makes a very strong impression from the jump, matching the character's grandiose presentation with a performance that feels confident, grandiose, and menacing. That "Solo" appearance aside, this is the first time I've spent any time with his performance, and I couldn't not praise it.

All in all, then, I'd definitely recommend checking the first two episodes of "Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord" out now that the show's available to stream on Disney+. Even lacking the context of "The Clone Wars" storyline, I found it involving purely on the strength of Maul's personality alone.

"Maul - Shadow Lord" seems to be off to a strong start; whether you're at all curious about the former Sith Lord, or you're just in the mood for some more action from the galaxy far, far away, I think you might enjoy Disney+'s new "Star Wars" story.

While Disney and Pixar landed a sci-fi box office bomb last year — I might have loved "Elio," but it definitely didn't pull in the crowds — Daniel Chong's zany caper "Hoppers" has fared better. If you didn't catch it, the movie sees 19-year-old Mabel (Piper Curda) making use of some newfangled tech to transplant her consciousness into the body of a robotic beaver so she can uncover the mysteries of the animal kingdom.

In our "Hoppers" review, Malcolm McMillan called it "delightful" and "basically 'Avatar' but better," and it's drawn plenty of praise elsewhere, too. At the time of writing, this hilarious adventure holds 94% approval ratings from critics and moviegoers alike on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's still one of the highest-grossing movies at the box office (per BoxOfficeMojo).

If you missed it in theaters, you're in luck: you won't have to wait much longer to watch "Hoppers" at home, as the film's just landed a premium video-on-demand (PVOD) release date! You can find the newly-announced date (plus my guess at the potential Disney+ release) below.

When is 'Hoppers' coming to streaming?

"Hoppers" hit the big screen on Friday, March 6, but as of our latest update, it's coming to streaming services in just a few days: "Hoppers" will be available to stream on Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home from Tuesday, April 28.

That just so happens to line up exactly with my original guess, which assumed we'd probably wait around 60 days for the film's digital release (which is the pattern past Disney releases have followed).

If you'd prefer to watch "Hoppers" on Disney+, you'll have to wait a little longer. Right now, I'd wager you'll be able to stream "Hoppers" on Disney+ at some point in June 2026.

Again, that guess is based on the wait for previous Disney releases. "Zootopia 2" hits Disney+ this week (March 11), 106 days after it first hit theaters. Likewise, "Tron: Ares" came to the platform 94 days after its theatrical debut, and "Freakier Friday" similarly arrived 97 days after its original release date.

So, if we assume "Hoppers" will also take around 95-105 days to come to the platform and acknowledge that new movies typically come to Disney+ on Wednesdays, we're looking at a mid-to-late June 2026 streaming release for "Hoppers," with June 10 or 17 seeming likely release dates.

An official "Hoppers" Disney+ release date has not been confirmed, but I'll be sure to update this section as soon as one arrives. Oh, and if you're looking to buy the movie yourself, "Hoppers" will be released physically on DVD, 4K and Blu-ray on June 2.

"Hoppers" was not a movie I expected to see this year. Sure, I have a two-year-old, but they sometimes struggle to make it through an episode of "Bluey," so a 104-minute-long movie is out of the question. But this is a Disney Pixar movie, so it has the potential to be the biggest movie of the year. I owed it to the people to see this movie, even if I'm not the target demographic.

104 minutes later, and I have zero regrets about seeing this movie. "Hoppers" is delightful. If you're a kid, it's a fun adventure where a human mind takes over an animal body to save the forest; basically "Avatar," but better. If you're a bit older, you can recognize the slightly more complex story about lost childhood and how emotional attachment to your loved ones can manifest itself in myriad ways.

Surprisingly, the one audience this movie might not be suitable for is the youngest of viewers, like my two-year-old. That's because the main villain of this movie, Titus (Dave Franco), is surprisingly terrifying. Like, Terminator-level terrifying. It's played for comedic effect and executed well, but it might just spook your littlest ones. For everyone else, though, it'll make you laugh, and you'll have a good time.

As I mentioned already, "Hoppers" starts out feeling very much like "Avatar" for kids. Our protagonist, Mabel (Piper Curda), is a college student currently in a showdown with Mayor Jerry (Jon Hamm) over a beltway that will cut through a glade, killing any possibility of it remaining a viable habitat for the local animals. There's just one problem: there are no local animals.

It turns out, all the wildlife has disappeared from the glade, clearing the way for Mayor Jerry to bulldoze it into infinity and beyond. But when Mabel learns that her professor, Dr. Sam, has created "hopping," a technology that allows human minds to hop into robot avatars that can then blend in and communicate with animals, she hops into a robot beaver and makes her way into the forest.

Once there, she discovers the animals have a society: They have kings but have been driven from the glade by shady tactics from the evil Mayor Jerry. So, Mabel asks the mammal king, a beaver named George (Bobby Moynihan), to summon the other kings so they can take on Jerry and take back the glade.

That backfires spectacularly, in no small part due to Titus, who is a villain so bloodthirsty he makes Mayor Jerry's brand of evil look like child's play. Voiced mostly by Franco, he's truly unhinged. Think Danerys Targaryen when she finally snaps in "Game of Thrones." In fact, I'm not sure that we've ever had quite so dangerous and unhinged a villain in a Pixar movie before, though rarely are the lives of humans on the line in a Pixar movie.

But the villainous turn works. Titus is creepy, he's scary, and he's willing to take down the humans at all costs. Had he been the villain of "Avatar," maybe I'd have enjoyed that movie more, because his motivation for revenge, while a base emotion, is logical if you think about it. The humans squish them; why not squish the humans back?

Verdict: 'Hoppers' proves Disney needs original movies

The originality of "Hoppers" is what makes it work. If it were just a movie about joining with the animals to defend the environment, it wouldn't be as memorable. We've seen that concept before, or at least something in the same vein.

But I'll remember Titus. I'll remember a villain so twisted that he wants to destroy humanity, something that really isn't a theme of kids' movies, and certainly not Pixar movies. I'll remember how he turns humanity's own tools against them as weapons, and how deranged he looked when he's finally unmasked. He's a genuinely compelling villain, making this a genuinely compelling movie.

We only get this, though, if Disney is willing to make more original movies. I get the logic behind sticking to sequels; this movie is not as good as "Toy Story 2." It won't make as much money as "Zootopia 2." It's logical for Disney to conclude that, if it's neither better nor more profitable than a sequel to a beloved property, then it's not worth making. But you'll never get those beloved properties if you don't take chances on original ideas. And while "Hoppers" may not be as good as some of the Pixar sequels, I'd still rather take it than a fifth "Toy Story."

If I could choose one activity to do for the rest of my life without complaints, it would be binge-watching. From new streaming releases to theatrical debuts, 2026 is shaping up to be a great year in entertainment, if I do say so myself.

March, in my humble opinion, is set to be a fantastic month for hot new entries coming to streaming services like Disney+, Netflix, HBO Max, Stan, Prime Video and more. There's a complete list of streaming entries coming in March over on our constantly updated what to watch guide, but in my opinion, these highly anticipated shows deserve their own time to shine.

From lighthearted reality romances to superhero action and shocking thrillers, there's something for everyone. And frankly, these new additions aren't worth glossing over. So pull up your calendar, and get ready to binge the best television shows coming to your favourite streaming platforms this March.

Daredevil: Born Again (Season 2)

Charlie Cox is back! After a well-rated season one, Daredevil's reboot makes a triumphant return to Disney+ on March 25.

After the events of season one, season two picks up as Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) is crushing New York City underfoot as he hunts down public enemy number one, the Hell’s Kitchen vigilante known as Daredevil. But beneath the horned mask, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) will try to fight back from the shadows to tear down the Kingpin’s corrupt empire and redeem his home.

Returning to the series are Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Fisk, Wilson Bethel as Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye and Margarita Levieva as Heather Glenn. This season also marks the long-awaited return of Krysten Ritter as fan-favourite Jessica Jones and introduces Matthew Lillard as the mysterious Mr Charles.

Something Very Bad is Going to Happen

From showrunner Haley Z Boston comes this gripping Netflix original series — of which I've been eagerly waiting for since I watched the trailer last week.

While not much has been revealed about the show's synopsis yet, we do know it is a limited atmospheric horror series set at a wedding, following a bride and groom in the week leading up to their ill-fated nuptials. That’s not a spoiler — just read the title. The first chilling trailer shows us a glimpse of what lies ahead, including the sinister stakes at play.

Deadloch (Season 2)

If you haven't experienced the joy, humour and all-around good time that is Deadloch season one, I'd suggest giving it a red hot go before sitting down for the new season.

Set in the fictional sleepy coastal town of Deadloch, Tasmania, this Aussie black comedy centres around an unlikely detective duo who reluctantly head up a murder investigation together: the meticulous Senior Sergeant Dulcie Collins (Kate Box), a Deadloch local, and the reckless Darwinite, Detective Eddie Redcliffe (Madeleine Sami). I've been referring to the series as "Kath and Kim do crime" since its debut in 2023, as it perfectly blends quintessential Aussie humour with the harrowing twists and turns of a suspenseful thriller.

Beyond that, I'm even more excited about the premise of season two, which sees Dulcie and Eddie head to the Top End to investigate the murder of Eddie's beloved former partner, Bushy.

Heartbreak High (Season 3)

Looking for Aussie teenage drama at its finest? Meet Heartbreak High. I've loved everything about this show — especially how it takes place in my home city of Sydney, Australia — but don't just take my word for it. The Netflix original has gotten a nice 86% RT audience rating for its first two seasons, and I'm sure its finale will be just as good, if not better.

As per the logline, for Hartley High’s graduating class, it’s goodbye school, hello adulthood! Yet when a revenge prank goes horribly wrong, Amerie and her friends must cover up their secret or risk losing everything.

Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat

In a fun new instalment, Jury Duty is back, and this time, we're going on a company retreat! And if it's anything like the hit first season, we're in for a ride.

Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat captures a corporate offsite event at a family-owned hot sauce company from the perspective of Anthony, a recently hired temporary worker. Undisclosed to Anthony, the entire experience is staged; every colleague around him is an actor, and every interaction has been orchestrated. As the founder prepares to step down, the getaway transforms into a clash between big corporate ambitions and small business values, with control of the company hanging in the balance.

At the centre is his complicated, often hilarious relationship with his daughter, Katie (Charly Clive), whose presence on campus forces them to confront long-standing tensions, shifting ambitions, and the challenge of redefining who they are to each other.

Paramount+ is doing what it does best — and that's beautifully crafted ranch landscapes with very attractive actors. From the creator of Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan, comes this profound family story about grief, which has already been renewed for a second season before its premiere.

Starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, Patrick J Adams and Elle Chapman, The Madison unfolds across two distinct worlds — the beautiful landscape of Montana and the vibrant energy of Manhattan — as it examines the ties that bind families together. Introducing the Clyburns, the six-episode first season of The Madison is a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.

The Bachelorette

Will you have this rose? Yuuuup. As a fellow fan of the Disney+ reality show, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, it's no secret (pun intended) that I'll be diving into the latest season of The Bachelorette on Stan, starring none other than #MomTok founder herself, Taylor Frankie Paul.

Given how Taylor's past rocky relationship is portrayed on TSLMW, it'll be quite entertaining to watch her journey to find the one. And from the initial trailer, it seems like the producers have indeed found some eye candy that may tickle Paul's (and the viewers') fancy.

Well, having had the chance to check out the first four episodes of the series in advance of the show's two-episode premiere on ABC tonight (Feb. 25) and forthcoming Hulu and Disney+ streaming release tomorrow, I am pleased to report that my fears have been assuaged. I'm sure a return to this style of sitcom might not work for everyone, and similarly, if you aren't already a fan of "Scrubs," this fairly safe revival sure doesn't feel like it's going to change your mind — well, unless the back half of the season veers in a totally different direction, at least.

That said, if you are a fan of "Scrubs," I feel confident when I say that you're probably going to enjoy the new show. It quickly reintroduces us to some of the sitcom's core members — J.D. (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliott (Sarah Chalke) primarily, with Carla (Judy Reyes) present to a lesser degree, and other stars featuring more as guests — as they lead their lives here and now, and while they've grown up and the show's grown a little more mature alongside the cast, it's otherwise still leaning into the formula that made the original show work.

There are still fresh additions to the cast, though only one — Sibby, who looks after staff wellness and is played by "SNL" alum Vanessa Bayer — really feels like they've had enough time to make their mark; the focus is squarely on the returning players, and it is both banking on and thriving thanks to the cast's lasting chemistry. But as Bayer's character makes for an entertaining addition to the staff, I'm keen to see the show's younger staff members come into their own, too.

The writing's reasonably sharp, the episodes are short and snappy, and the show's still got the signature fantasy sequences and occasional somber moment to interrupt the silliness. The story has progressed, but otherwise, it feels and sounds like "Scrubs," because it is more "Scrubs." But it's a formula that still works, and that makes it very easy to recommend to longtime fans.

This is simple, nostalgic comfort TV that leans into the series' identity — and as a "Scrubs" fan, I think that this new installment feels like exactly what I wanted it to be. It's not really trying anything too fresh, but after these four episodes, I'm definitely keen to tune in for the rest of the series' run. If you loved the original show, I'd encourage you to give it a shot too.

2025 was a good year to be a "Predator" movie fan, as franchise shepherd Dan Trachtenberg gave us not one but two new movies starring everyone's favorite extra-terrestrial hunters. First up was Hulu's excellent animated feature, "Predator: Killer of Killers," and then in November, we were treated to "Predator: Badlands," a satisfying new spin on the franchise that threw us in with a young Predator outcast on a mission to take on some seriously deadly prey.

If you missed "Predator: Badlands" in theaters, I've got good news: As of today (Feb. 12), the latest "Predator" movie is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+. And, while it isn't exactly in keeping with the forthcoming Valentine's festivities, this is the movie I think I'd recommend streaming this week, above all else.

It might not be quite as thrilling as "Prey," but "Predator: Badlands" is still a solid action thriller that you shouldn't miss out on — you can find out why below.

What is 'Predator: Badlands' about?

Dan Trachtenberg's "Predator: Badlands" takes us into the future and over to the planet of Yautja Prime, where we're introduced to a diminutive, determined Predator named Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi). In an effort to prove his worthiness to his father and clan leader, Dek heads to Genna (a "death planet") in order to hunt the Kalisk, a deadly apex predator. After crash-landing on the planet, Dek recommits to his quest, and while he continues his hunt, he encounters (and reluctantly allies with) a damaged Weyland-Yutani android called Thia (Elle Fanning).

In addition to Schuster-Koloamatangi and Fanning, "Predator: Badlands" also features Reuben de Jong, Mike Homik, Rohinal Narayan, Cameron Brown, and Alison Wright.

Should you stream 'Predator: Badlands?'

If you're looking to liven up your watchlist this week, "Predator: Badlands" is the movie to watch. This new chapter is a fast-moving, surprisingly funny, and exciting sci-fi thriller/unlikely buddy movie that, to me, proves that the "Predator" franchise couldn't be in much safer hands.

While I can't say I have ever really cared to know the backstory or more about the Yautja in the past, I think the decision to make a Predator protagonist is a great one. It offers the filmmakers the chance to add new layers to the fearsome foes, adding a welcome dash of humor. Dek's not just a hunter, he's also an underdog that you'll want to root for. He's also a very funny lead, especially once he's paired up with Thia (a brilliant turn from Elle Fanning).

I get why some were disappointed by the PG-13 rating, but I can't see how anyone would be disappointed by all the action that "Badlands" does contain. Sure, Dek might not be slicing and dicing human foes, but there's still plenty of carnage to enjoy here. Viewers who are dazzled by impressive visuals will be well-served, too.

While I don't think the thrills here outmatch the raw intensity of "Prey," "Predator: Badlands" deserves praise for its blockbuster, B-movie-style thrills, and it leaves us in a solid place for the next chapter, too.

I'm glad to see "Predator: Badlands" has plenty of fans: it's sitting at 86% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with an even higher fan rating (95% on the Popcornmeter), proving it resonated with fellow moviegoers, too.

The movie earned a perfect 4/4 score from Matt Zoller Seitz in his review for RogerEbert.com, who hailed it as "an exceptional sci-fi action thriller with memorable characters, beautiful and terrifying animals (and plants), a structurally airtight script, and lead performances that deserve to be included in discussions of the year’s best".

Empire's Nick De Semlyen offered a 4-star verdict, calling it "an amped-up rock-gig of a movie and the most fun Predator since the original." Reviewing for Time Out, Olly Richards also issued a 4-star score, praising its action setpieces and the way it reinvigorates the franchise all over again, writing: "Trachtenberg is making the franchise richer with every instalment."

Basically, if you're looking for a new, adrenaline-pumping action movie to watch at home this week, you're going to want to stream "Predator: Badlands" on Hulu (or Disney+). The original incarnation of "The Muppet Show" might predate me by several decades, but Disney+'s new "Muppet Show" special event felt practically purpose-built for me. I spent my childhood wearing out VHS tapes of movies like "Muppet Treasure Island," "The Muppet Christmas Carol" and "Muppets from Space" and have been an ardent fan of more recent Muppet outings, too (the 2011 movie being a particular highlight).

So, when we learned last year that the gang would be returning to the Muppet theatre for an all-new outing guest-starring none other than Sabrina Carpenter, I was ecstatic. And, having had the pleasure of watching this half-hour special in advance of its release on ABC and Disney's streaming service on Feb. 4, I have one small plea to make to the House of Mouse: greenlight a new season of this chaos, now.

'The Muppet Show'

If you're not up on all things Muppet, the original variety series ran from 1976 through 1981 and saw countless celebrity guests like Elton John, Diana Ross and Johnny Cash sharing the stage with Kermit, Miss Piggy and more as the crew hosted their own variety performances, and now they've done it all again ahead of the series' upcoming 50th anniversary.

I knew going in that I was primed to laugh along with Kermit and co., but unless you're a real cynic (or you simply can't stand puppets), I defy you not to at the very least crack the odd smile at some point during "The Muppet Show." Simply put, this is a half-hour's worth of sketch comedy, songs, and all-out chaos — and I loved it.

I know that I'm susceptible to Muppet silliness, but I just found this to be a blast. From a rendition of one of Carpenter's popular hits supported by a clutch of sassy hens to Miss Piggy's machinations to be the star that she is, to the cutting put-downs from Statler and Waldorf, and a big swamp-set duet, the special frequently had me laughing, and that's all I really needed it to do.

I don't have much more to say other than that; these Muppets feel very much like the characters I've been a fan of since I was a kid, and Disney+'s new "The Muppet Show" was a treat. It's a dose of light entertainment, and it did its job, and did it well.

This special proves that there's plenty of fun still to be had with "The Muppet Show" with the format, and I really hope it's a hit with subscribers of all ages. Early on, Kermit jokes that this could be the start of another comeback, "depending on how tonight goes," and I really hope that rings true. So, if you've got a half hour to spare, and you're looking for a quick, comedic blast of fun, this is it.

We're already heading into February 2026, and Disney+ subscribers are doubtless looking forward to finding out what new releases they can find on the House of Mouse's streaming service. It's a lighter month for new Disney+ releases compared to January, though I'd bet most Disney+ members will still be catching up on "Wonder Man" (which only just premiered on Jan. 28).

That's not to say the streamer has nothing of note inbound, though. The biggest new arrival for February has to be a brand-new "The Muppet Show" special, which promises music, comedy, chaos, and a handful of celebrity appearances. Meanwhile, drama fans can also look forward to binge-watching "The Artful Dodger" season 2, plus there are new library titles inbound throughout the month to entertain the whole family.

Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the iconic Muppets crew are returning to our screens for a brand new special in the style of their classic variety show at the start of the month. It's airing across Disney+ and ABC, and it's bound to be plenty of fun.

We've been told to expect music, comedy, and chaos when The Muppets return to take to the stage of the original Muppet Theatre, alongside executive producers and guest stars, Seth Rogen and Sabrina Carpenter, plus Maya Rudolph, who was just announced as another star set to join in the fun.

'The Artful Dodger' season 2

Hulu's Dickensian follow-up is back this February, and sees master thief-turned-surgeon Jack Dawkins, aka "The Artful Dodger" (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) in deep trouble.

In season 2, he has an appointment with the noose; he's being hunted by new lawman Inspector Boxer (Luke Bracey), and if he sees the woman he loves, Lady Belle (Maia Mitchell), he'll be hanged. Meanwhile, Belle's determined to forge her future in medicine, driven by ambition and a love that hangs in the balance. Boxer is vying for Belle's affections, and Fagin (David Thewlis) is about to drag Jack into their most dangerous heist yet. Oh, and if that wasn't enough drama already, there's also a killer on the loose. Sounds like a stuffed second season!

You need to watch "Wonder Man." Or at least, you really should, whether you're a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or not. In fact, if you don't read anything beyond this point, I hope you take away that even a Marvel skeptic can like this show, and at the end of its eight episodes, come away from the viewing experience impressed.

When I tell you I had no plans to watch this show, I mean it. I would, on a professional level, of course, cover it if asked. Despite the shine taken off the MCU's star in Hollywood and the world at large, the shows and movies it produces are still among the biggest in any given year. Case and point? "Avengers: Doomsday" still made the list of my most anticipated movies of 2026, even though I find myself unimpressed with Marvel in recent years.

But, as they say in the business, time is money, and just because "Wonder Man" is the biggest show on Disney+ this month doesn't mean you need to watch it. After all, our Tom's Guide managing editor, Kelly Woo, declared this show unlikely to be must-watch TV to the point where she was willing to cancel Disney+ this month rather than watch it as soon as it debuts on the streaming service.

Before watching "Wonder Man," I'd have agreed with her — without reservation. Now that I've watched the eight-episode miniseries, I couldn't disagree more. This superhero show is a well-crafted, engaging story about an unlikely mentor-mentee relationship and the unexpected friendship that comes with it, as well as an engaging tale of betrayal that's dripping with metaphor. If anything, it could have used a bit more superhero stuff to make the Marvel aspects of the show impactful rather than largely ancillary. But regardless, I can't recommend it enough, and I'm genuinely hoping that we get a "Wonder Man" season 2.

'Wonder Man' doesn't need Marvel, but Marvel needs more 'Wonder Man'

If you watch the trailer above, you'll notice two things. First, there are no superpowers on display. Second, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley are rarely on screen alone. Where one goes, so too goes the other.

Eight episodes later, I can tell you that the trailer nails it. Yes (spoiler alert), Simon (Abdul-Mateen) does have superpowers (Marvel gives that away in a subsequent trailer). But until the very last second, they're largely irrelevant to his story.

That's not to say they're totally irrelevant. As you watch the series, you see how Simon's powers shape who he is today. Especially as he tries to be an actor in a world where the superpowered are barred from acting. But while they're part of his character's backstory, it's not essential. What's essential is that Simon needs to overcome the traumas of his past and finally get over the obstacles in front of him. The fact that superpowers are involved in those core components of great storytelling is merely window dressing.

Speaking of storytelling, "Wonder Man" is primarily the story of an unlikely friendship. It's far more about that than it is about capes or costumes. This show is centered around the unlikely friendship between Simon and Trevor, and while Trevor may be a familiar face for anyone who's watched "Iron Man 3" or "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," you don't need to know his backstory going into this show. "Wonder Man" tells you everything you need to know as it plays out the mentor-mentee relationship between the veteran actor Trevor and the struggling Simon, which then becomes a deep friendship ready to be fractured by dark secrets the two friends keep from each other.

Do those secrets involve powers and Marvel lore? They do, but the reason this show is so good is that they don't have to involve either of those things. A Marvel-free version of this show could exist, and it would be just as good, possibly even better.

Which brings me to the two negatives I have about "Wonder Man." While I like that it's focused on substance over style, this is still fundamentally a Marvel property, and I would have liked Simon's powers and his relationship to them to be further explored. His growth as a potential superhero happens off-screen, and I think with more time, it would have been fulfilling to go through that journey with Simon, rather than rushing to the show's endpoint.

I also worry that Marvel, which seems to be careening towards a reboot, isn't going to learn that this is the type of show that people want to see. The studio dumped this show at the end of January as a binge-drop, and while the story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, this show is billed as a miniseries and what's currently on the Marvel release schedule seems aimed at getting to "Avengers: Secret Wars" and tying up loose ends. "Wonder Man" is, in theory, exactly the type of show Marvel should be craving. But instead, I'm worried it's doomed to be the type of show Marvel often forgets that it knows how to make.

Please Marvel, don't let 'Wonder Man' end here

I know I just said I think this show's future is doomed, but there are some hopeful signs that "Wonder Man" could get a second season.

First, there are some early reviews that have already come in, and they're positive as well. "Wonder Man" is currently rated 93% "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes by critics, which is impressive in general but particularly for a Marvel show. Show creator Andrew Guest also recently sat down with MovieWeb and hinted that a season 2 was not out of the question.

Personally, I don't need it to be a season 2, necessarily. If we get more of Simon (and Trevor) in a future Marvel movie — and not just forgotten or killed off in "Avengers: Doomsday" — I'm fine with that too. But after watching "Wonder Man," it's clear that this is a story worth telling, and there's more of it to tell. So I'm just begging Marvel, please, don't let "Wonder Man" end here.

Summer is in full swing here in Australia, and while it may soon be time to head back to normal routines without summer fun mixed in, there's still plenty of time left to watch new releases on the best streaming services.

As a streaming writer, there are few activities I enjoy more than sitting down with a new show or film to dig into. This January has offered some exceptional new releases that I can't stop raving about — and I've streamed all four of the recommendations below and given them my personal tick of approval.

Of course, January isn't quite done yet. There's still more to come by month's end, so I've also listed my most highly anticipated binges, just in case you're wondering when the next season of your favourite show (a.k.a. Bridgerton) actually starts.

But enough with the waffling — here are the best shows and films to watch this long weekend in Australia (January 24-26, 2026).

Steal

Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) is back in the high-octane thriller series Steal. The Prime Video original is about the heist of the century and ordinary office worker, Zara (Turner), who finds herself at the centre of it. A typical workday at pension-fund investment company Lochmill Capital is upended when a gang of violent thieves bursts in and forces Zara and her best mate Luke (Archie Madekwe) to execute their demands.

People We Meet on Vacation

Honestly, 'cute' is the perfect word to describe this movie. As a fan of Emily Henry's romance novels, this book-to-movie adaptation was nigh-on perfect, bringing the perfectly quirky pair of Alex and Poppy to life in their on-screen counterparts, Tom Bligh and Emily Bader.

In case you didn't pick up the book, here's a quick rundown: After a decade as unlikely best friends and travel buddies, free-spirited Poppy (Bader) and routine-loving Alex (Bligh) wonder if they might be a perfect romantic match after a chance reunion at Alex's brother's wedding.

Hijack

This Apple TV thriller series has quite literally hijacked my brain, as I recently binged the entire first season in preparation for the second's arrival last week. Idris Elba stars as Sam, a business negotiator, who must use his skills to broker a peaceful end to a hijacking of a seven-hour flight from Dubai to London.

We’re now two episodes into the thrilling second season (with new episodes premiering weekly), in which a Berlin underground train and its commuters are taken hostage, with authorities scrambling to save hundreds of lives. Sam (Elba) is once again at the heart of the crisis on board, where one wrong decision could lead to disaster.

Tell Me Lies

Tell Me Lies third season debuted on Disney Plus on January 13, reigniting the fanbase that follows this saucy romantic drama. After watching the first two seasons religiously, it was a no-brainer to tune into the new season of Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen's (Jackson White) relationship — a rather addictive entanglement — that spans the course of eight years.

Tell Me Lies season three follows Lucy and Stephen as they rekindle their tumultuous romance in time for the spring semester at Baird College. While they promise things will be different this time, past indiscretions hinder their best intentions, and Lucy finds herself embroiled in a controversy she wants nothing to do with.

Still to come in January 2026

Despite just one week of January to go, there are still a few hot releases set to premiere before the month’s end. Notably, Marvel's superhero satire Wonder Man will debut on Disney Plus, with weekly episodes starting on January 29.

In a quick logline, the show follows aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) as he struggles to get his career off the ground. During a chance meeting with Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak (Zlatko Burić) is remaking the superhero film "Wonder Man”, a role he may be more perfect for than he expects.

Another wildly popular show coming back this January is none other than Netflix’s period-romance juggernaut Bridgerton, with part one of season four releasing on January 29. This fourth instalment follows the bohemian son, Benedict (Luke Thompson), as he finds love during his mother's masquerade ball. The captivating lady of choice? Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha), a maid with mysterious secrets (and a penchant for silver). Much like season three, the second half of Bridgerton's new season will debut a month later on February 26, and if it's anything like before, viewers will be left salivating for more.

And lastly, Apple TV's latest season of Shrinking will premiere on January 28. Starring Jason Segel (“How I Met Your Mother”), Shrinking follows grieving psychotherapist Jimmy (Segel), who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives… including his own. Season three sees Jimmy begin to have a healthy dating life again, while his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell), deals with her upcoming high school graduation and impending move to college.

I was scrolling through Disney+ recently, and I happened across a film that had long lingered in my memory as a particularly devastating watch: "Bridge to Terabithia." I don't recall ever revisiting it since seeing it as a kid in 2007 (nor was I familiar with the book it's based on), but I immediately recalled the emotions that I felt while watching it back then. In Gábor Csupó's "Bridge to Terabithia," we meet Jess Aarons (Josh Hutcherson), a 12-year-old kid who lives with the rest of his family in Lark Creek. Money is tight, and he's bothered by school bullies, but his life changes forever when new girl Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb) enrolls at his school.

The pair quickly form a bond, and after stumbling upon an abandoned treehouse in the woods, they start dreaming up an imagined secret world they dub "Terabithia." Soon, they spend their free time after class ruling as king and queen and fighting the forces of the "Dark Master."

Alongside Hutcherson and Robb, the "Bridge to Terabithia" cast also includes Zooey Deschanel, Robert Patrick, Kate Butler, and Bailee Madison.

'Bridge to Terabithia' is an enchanting fantasy movie that'll have you in tears

I think newcomers could easily overlook "Bridge to Terabithia" as a forgotten family movie, but to do that would be a huge disservice to what remains a grounded, charming, and deeply moving coming-of-age story; it's a big-hearted tale with real depth.

I can't think of a way to go into any further detail on why it left such a lasting impression without addressing the turning point of the tale, so be warned: there are spoilers ahead if you've never seen or read "Bridge to Terabithia" before. If you'd prefer to remain out of the loop, don't read on, but just know that it's still as affecting as a full-grown adult.

The big pivot in "Bridge to Terabithia" comes in the form of a tragedy that arrives out of the blue.

Late into the film, Jess returns from a field trip with his music teacher (Deschanel) to learn that his newfound friend has had a terrible accident while trying to enter Terabithia on her own. The rope swing they used to enter the kingdom snapped, and she fell and drowned in the creek they had to cross every time they disappeared into their imagination.

From there, the story switches gears. "Bridge to Terabithia" up to this point is a whimsical adventure, full of make-believe fantasy action, but that atmosphere is understandably shattered by this reveal. Then, the film becomes a far more poignant, somber watch about loss, the grief that follows, and coping with it through the eyes of a kid.

As someone who never encountered the book, Leslie's death was such a shock and a real gut-punch, and the way it sucks the whimsy out of the story (only for it to return stronger, in the final moments) still moved me to tears almost two decades later.

I know I'm susceptible to shedding a tear or two at the movies at the best of times, but this really does feel a cut above the average Disney live-action movie. It's well-acted and still enchanting, even if the imagined fantasy visuals might not measure up to modern standards.

I'm pleased to see that it's still held in high esteem elsewhere, too. At the time of writing, "Bridge to Terabithia" still holds an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's drawn high praise from critics, both at the time of its release and in the years since.

Simply put, it's still very easy to get wrapped up in the fantasy and the heartfelt emotions of "Bridge to Terabithia." It may not be a timely or trending recommendation, but I'd absolutely recommend you stream "Bridge to Terabithia" on Disney Plus. Summer is in full swing across Australia, and much of the country will, unfortunately, experience a heatwave this weekend. While a trip to the beach or local pool could suffice, that would involve moving, so I’m choosing to beat-the-heat by staying inside, blasting the aircon and streaming some of the best television shows.

There are plenty of great series worth binging on the best streaming services in Australia, but I've compiled the top five trending shows to crack into now. Most of these are recent releases or have upcoming seasons dropping soon, so now’s a great time to get up-to-date before 2026 begins in earnest.

What’s more, all these recommendations are highly rated across reviews and by fans, with Rotten Tomatoes scores above 80%. So as the temperature soars to past 40℃, get comfy on your couch, grab a snack and tune into one of these top-rated shows.

Pluribus

From the creator of Breaking Bad comes this exceptional show on Apple TV, rated a massive 98% on Rotten Tomatoes (and it also gets my big tick of approval).

Carol Sturka is one of a handful the only people in the world immune to an alien virus that has transformed the global population into one giant peaceful and happy collective hivemind. Suddenly alone, Carol must find a way to manage this new world in which everyone else, except her, is unstoppably optimistic. To make matters worse, the collective population of the world is searching for a way to overcome Carol’s immunity.

The series premiered in November, and just dropped its final season one episode of the first season on Christmas Eve, but even two weeks later, I'm still raving about it — and I suspect that once you’ve watched it, you will too.

Fallout

Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. Two hundred years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them. The entire first season is available to stream on Prime Video, and was undeniably one of my favourite series of 2024.

Fallout season two debuted last month, with new episodes dropping weekly every Wednesday. This season immediately picks up in the aftermath of the first season’s epic finale, following Lucy (Ella Purnell) and the Ghoul (Walton Goggins) as they journey through the wasteland of the Mojave to the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas in search of her father, Hank (Kyle MacLachlan).

Heated Rivalry

With a huge 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this new HBO Max show is all the rage — quite literally.

As per the logline, this 6-episode series follows two of the biggest stars in Major League Hockey who are bound by ambition, rivalry, and a magnetic pull neither of them fully understands. What begins as a secret fling between two fresh-faced rookies evolves into a years-long journey of love, denial, and self-discovery. Over the next eight years, as they chase glory on the ice, they struggle to navigate their feelings for each other. Torn between the sport they live for and the love they can’t ignore, they must decide if there’s room in their fiercely competitive world for something as fragile – and powerful – as real love.

Other honourable drama series on HBO Max include the award-winning medical drama, The Pitt, with season two debuting today, January 9, 2026.

All Her Fault

Another great show from late last year is All Her Fault, a Peacock show that’s available on Binge here in Australia. And with a respectable 80% RT rating, this mystery thriller series is a great cooped-in weekend binge now that all the weekly episodes have been released.

Starring Australia's own Sarah Snook (known for playing Shiv Roy on Succession), All Her Fault is every parent’s worst nightmare brought to life. Marissa Irvine (Snook) arrives to pick up her son from a playdate only to find a stranger at the door – and her child missing. The drama unfolds in a seemingly safe suburban setting, where trust quickly erodes and secrets surface.

A Thousand Blows

With the season two premiere arriving in a matter of hours, it's an optimal time to stream this banger of a show on Disney Plus. Starring Stephen Graham and Malachi Kirby, this series is inspired by the true-life stories of a group of characters battling for survival in the brutal East End of London in the 1880s.

This includes the Forty Elephants, an all-female crime syndicate led by Mary Carr (Erin Doherty) that specialises in shoplifting and confidence tricks. They clash with Henry "Sugar" Goodson (Graham), the self-proclaimed "emperor" of the East End's illegal bare-knuckle boxing world. And best friends from Jamaica and recent immigrants, Hezekiah Moscow (Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall), find themselves caught amongst it all.

The second season takes place exactly a year later, as Hezekiah becomes a shadow of the man he once was and Sugar is estranged from his family, all while drinking himself to death. But Mary Carr's return to the scene reignites the spark, as she hopes to reclaim her crown and reassemble the Forty Elephants.

The Hulu app has been on life support for a while now. Slowly but surely, Disney has been integrating Hulu content into the Disney+ app and has even rolled out a new version of the Disney+ app to make it easy to find Hulu movies and shows. But now, we know exactly when Hulu is going to die ... we think.

As reported by numerous outlets, including Cord Cutter News, Disney has revealed it will begin shutting down the standalone Hulu app in February. We already knew that Disney planned to sunset the Hulu app in 2026, but now we have what seems to be an official start date. It's worth noting that Disney hasn't publicly announced this via its own press site at this time, but given the number of outlets reporting on the news, it seems almost certain that next month is when you'll start losing access to the Hulu app.

According to initial reports, Disney is shutting down the Hulu app by simply removing its availability on various devices. The goal seems to be that, by the middle of 2026, you'll no longer be able to use the Hulu app anywhere.

That plan may kick into effect as soon as Feb. 5, 2026, which is the first date Hulu will leave a major platform. The Nintendo support site for the Americas has officially announced that the Hulu app will no longer be available as of that date from the Nintendo Switch eShop. It also announced that after Feb. 5, the app will no longer be supported on the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 as well.

It might be time to start using the Disney+ app for Hulu

While you'll have another month (at least) with the Hulu app, you might want to start using Disney+ to watch your Hulu movies and shows now. At some point this year, it will be the only way to watch Hulu content, and Disney+ is a distinctly different app with a different user interface that may take some getting used to.

The good news is you'll be using a new version of the Disney+ app. This redesigned Disney+ app features a new user interface with an improved navigation bar and four tabs: For You, Disney+, Hulu and ESPN. It also features more personalized recommendations than before, a new Live hub and updated content rows that feature cinematic poster-style artwork and now include badges like “Season Finales," “New Series," and “New Movies.” It's a notable improvement, just in time for this major change for the streaming service.

At CES 2026, Disney has revealed a new plan to try and pull mobile-first viewers' attention away from social video on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels: the House of Mouse plans to bring its own "microcontent" directly to Disney+.

These plans were announced during Disney's advertising-focused Tech + Data Showcase on Wednesday, Jan. 7 (as reported by Variety), and come after the entertainment company began experimenting with "Verts" (short-form vertical video content) on its new ESPN streaming app.

The ESPN vertical package effectively created tailored sports highlight packages, but the aim here is to make Disney+ a "daily destination" for users looking for updates across their interests.

What will Disney+'s 'microcontent' look like?

At the time of writing, it's not entirely clear what form Disney's plans will take, though, judging by what Erin Teague, EVP of Product Management for Disney Entertainment and ESPN, said at the presentation, we should brace for experimentation.

"Over the next year, we're introducing vertical video experiences on Disney Plus, think all of the short-form Disney content you want, all in one unified app.

"Over time, we'll evolve these experiences as we explore applications for a variety of formats, categories, and content types for a dynamic feed of just what you're interested in, from sports, news, and entertainment, refreshed in real time based on your last visit," Teague added. (quotes via THR).

With Teague previously stating "everything's on the table" (via Deadline) for Disney's vertical video plans, this new wave of content could include repurposed scenes and franchise highlights from Disney+ originals or even bite-sized original programming designed specifically for the social video audience.

This news comes about a month after Disney signed a major deal with OpenAI, making a $1 billion equity investment in the company and signing a three-year character licensing agreement to bring its many IPs to Sora, the company's AI-powered video generation platform. And, following that deal and this push towards meeting viewers where they are, we may well see user-prompted content from this partnership eventually make its way to the platform, too.

'Wonder Man'

Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II ) is an aspiring actor whose career just won't take off. That seemingly changes when he crosses paths with Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), a washed-up performer who's still clinging to his past.

Slattery introduces him to a potentially career-defining opportunity: a remake of director Von Kovak's (Zlatko Buric) movie "Wonder Man." Both men see a chance to reinvent themselves with the film, which leads them to work as hard as they possibly can for roles in the remade movie.

'Pupstruction Construction'

Get ready to get "ruff" and tumble with some adorable little pups that work with construction. It follows Phinny as he introduces younger viewers to real builders at work, showing how houses, roads, tunnels, bridges, and other structures are made using the same tools and trucks seen in the animated segments. The Oscars are going streaming, and YouTube is getting the biggest night in Hollywood. Starting in 2029, YouTube will become the exclusive home of the Academy Awards, taking over from ABC after more than five decades. The Google-owned platform beat out multiple bidders, including ABC itself, for the rights to the prestigious ceremony.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the deal in a press release, confirming that YouTube will air the 101st Oscars and continue hosting the show through 2033.

YouTube’s win underscores how aggressively tech companies are moving into live, prestige programming once dominated by traditional linear networks. Netflix began streaming the SAG Awards in 2024 (with the show now rebranded as the Actors Awards). And Apple, Amazon and other platforms continue to chase big, live events such as awards and sports.

Global push

Meanwhile, the Oscars have been struggling in the ratings for years and grappling with relevance in a fragmented media landscape. Giving the ceremony to a giant global streaming platform signals the Academy has bowed to the reality that audiences aren’t watching network or cable TV … or even TV at all.

“The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible — which will be beneficial for our Academy members and the film community,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a statement.

The deal includes access to a number of related events, including the Governors Awards, the Oscars Nominations Announcement, the Oscars Nominees Luncheon, the Scientific and Technical awards, as well as interviews, film education programs and podcasts.

What's next?

“The Oscars are one of our essential cultural institutions, honoring excellence in storytelling and artistry,” said YouTube CEO Neal Mohan. “Partnering with the Academy to bring this celebration of art and entertainment to viewers all over the world will inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars’ storied legacy.”

Reportedly, losing the Oscars was a relief to Disney execs who didn’t want to spend the kind of money that the Academy was seeking. An ABC spokesperson told Deadline that it was proud to host the Oscars for more than half a century and wished success to the Academy.

It’s unclear from the press release how the Oscars will stream across YouTube’s ecosystem. It may air only on the YouTube platform, or it could be simulcast on YouTube TV.

What is clear is that the Oscars aren’t betting on appointment television. Instead, it will rely on global reach and the algorithm to maintain its status as a cultural touchstone into the 2030s.

Every Disney employee — or as the company calls them, a “cast member” — goes through extensive training on the Disney way. To this day, I still pick up random pieces of trash or my kids’ toys using the “Disney swoop” — a simple bend at the knee, reaching down without breaking stride. And if I see a person taking a photo of a group, I instinctively ask if they’d like me to take it so they can be in the shot.

That DIsney "magical moments" mindset is ingrained in me to my core.

Although I cover all things AI now, I'm a former Disney cast member — both in the parks and later as part of a team of writers — so, I personally know Disney doesn’t just protect its image down to the way garbage is picked up. It curates the magic. Every interaction, every costume, every character gesture is intentional. There’s a reason cast members don’t “break character,” and why even the smallest creative changes go through intense layers of approval. The brand represents far more than entertainment. It’s about experience.

That’s why Disney’s $1 billion deal with OpenAI gave me pause. I was initially stunned (I think we all were), but the more I thought about it and reflected on my Disney days, I realized this follows their playbook.

Why the $1B deal actually makes sense

On paper, it reads like a standard tech headline: Disney invests $1B in OpenAI and licenses hundreds of characters for AI-generated video and images. But from an inside-looking-out perspective, this move feels far more calculated — and far less reckless — than critics assume. I’ll admit, my first reaction was panic. Wait… does this mean we’re going to see user-generated content of Mickey vaping? I genuinely shuddered at the thought.

But hear me out.

This isn’t Disney “giving up control” to AI. It’s Disney choosing where and how that control lives next. Because, frankly, the internet has already found ways to butcher beloved Disney characters. This deal doesn’t invite anarchy — it contains the potential for mayhem. By stepping in now, Disney isn’t loosening the reins. It’s tightening them because AI is coming for entertainment.

Disney has always been technology-first

One thing people forget is that Disney has always used advanced technology. Long before AI the company was quietly pushing boundaries through innovations like audio-animatronics, motion capture and virtual production.

Disney pioneered lifelike robotic characters decades ago, adopted performance capture to preserve emotional realism in animation and film, and later transformed theme parks with MagicBands and RFID systems that enabled real-time personalization years before “ambient computing” became a buzzword.

Behind the scenes, Disney also uses machine learning to manage crowd flow and wait times, while Lucasfilm’s technology reshaped modern filmmaking by placing actors inside real-time digital environments instead of green screens. In every case, the approach was the same: bring cutting-edge technology in-house, shape it to Disney’s standards and only deploy to enhance the experience. How do I know this? I took classes on the “Disney way of business” from Walt Disney University and earned my Mouseters degree (I am proud to say that I’m not even joking).

From animatronics to motion capture to virtual production, Disney routinely adopts cutting-edge tools — but only after they’ve been shaped to fit Disney’s standards, not the other way around. Even something as simple as how a character waves or speaks is governed by rules designed to protect emotional continuity.

Seen through that lens, partnering with OpenAI makes sense. Rather than fighting generative AI from the sidelines or sending endless cease-and-desist letters, Disney is doing what it’s always done best: bringing disruptive tech inside the tent and setting the rules itself.

That’s a very Disney move.

Why Sora makes sense

What really changes the equation here isn’t AI-generated images — it’s video.

Sora gives Disney something it hasn’t had before: a way to let fans create short-form, character-driven moments without handing over the keys to their magic kingdom. It’s about controlled creativity — fan expression within boundaries Disney defines.

As a cast member, I learned that Disney loves participation — as long as it’s guided. Parades, meet-and-greets, interactive rides — they’re all structured experiences that feel spontaneous while being anything but. Trust me, they make it look like pixie dust, but it's a lot of hard work.

Sora fits that philosophy almost perfectly.

This feels like risk management

A lot of creators are understandably nervous about AI and IP. I’ve thought about this a lot, and from where I’m sitting, this deal feels less like surrender and more like containment.

By officially licensing characters to OpenAI, Disney reduces the incentive for unauthorized, lower-quality knockoffs elsewhere. It sets expectations for what’s allowed, what’s not and what “Disney-level” AI output should look like.

And crucially, the deal doesn’t include actors’ likenesses or voices. That promise, one Disney has historically guarded fiercely, remains intact. As someone who’s worn the badge, that restraint speaks volumes.

Final thoughts

When you work at Disney, you’re taught that every guest interaction shapes how people feel about the brand — sometimes for life. That mindset doesn’t disappear when you leave.

So when I look at this deal, I don’t see Disney abandoning its values. I see it extending them into a world where AI-generated content is inevitable, whether the company participates or not.

Disney has made a $1B bet on staying relevant without losing its identity — and doing it on its own terms. From a former cast member’s perspective, that’s not surprising at all.

I’m not going to lie: When I sat down to stream “A Very Jonas Christmas Movie” on Disney Plus, it was largely out of a desire to hate-watch the new holiday original.

I have nothing against the Jonas Brothers — "Waffle House" is a certified banger, and "Sucker" is a fantastic pop anthem — but I made a rash judgment that the bros' new festive flick would be worthy of lampooning. Oh, how wrong I was. Some 80 minutes later, I had a great big goofy grin on my face. “A Very Jonas Christmas” might not reinvent the holiday movie formula, but it’s a charming and shockingly self-aware watch.

Having now sampled a selection box of holiday movie offerings on rival streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video, I’m here to declare the JoBros at the top of Santa’s nice list. The musical siblings' grand return to the House of Mouse is definitely my top pick for the one Christmas movie you need to watch with your loved ones this holiday season.

What is ‘A Very Jonas Christmas Movie’ about?

Starring the eponymous siblings as themselves, “A Very Jonas Christmas Movie” sees Nick, Kevin and Joe in a “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”-style odyssey to get home for the holidays.

After playing a sold-out show in winter-swept London, the Jonas Brothers are set to return to the U.S. to be reunited with their loved ones. However, off-stage cracks are starting to form in their brotherly bond. And when a mysterious stranger puts a curse on them that won’t lift until they rediscover their camaraderie, everything starts to go wrong.

From exploding private jets to trains going to the wrong destination, and even a hungry pack of snow wolves, if the Jonas Brothers are going to make it back to New York City in time for Christmas, they’re going to need to come together and restore their brotherhood.

‘A Very Jonas Christmas Movie’ is a must-watch this holiday season

The biggest strength of this Disney Plus movie is right there in the title. The Jonas Brothers have natural chemistry as real-life siblings and bandmates for almost two decades, and it certainly shows on screen. They bounce off of each other with ease, and there’s some great banter between the boys that genuinely had me chuckling. Kevin, revealing that he writes to prison inmates because “a fan is a fan,” had me in stitches.

Best of all, it’s clear that the Jonas Brothers don’t take themselves too seriously. There are numerous self-aware jabs at their public personas and the band's history. The adventure also plays on the fact that the trio has been famous their entire lives. Without a small army of publicists and managers sorting every step of their journey home, they have to adjust to the “real world” pretty quickly, leading to plenty of pleasant comedy.

Hilarity does certainly ensue. A scene set in beautiful Amsterdam, where Nick runs into a fictional Broadway rival, Ethan (Andrew Barth Feldman), and the two compete to out-sing each other, performing a rendition of a tune from their failed “Home Alone: The Musical,” is wonderfully silly. Kevin and Joe's reactions in the background only add to the comedy.

Ultimately, this is still a Disney-produced Christmas movie, so the narrative beats are familiar, and the shoehorned-in love interest for Joe (played by Chloe Bennet) seems included out of obligation rather than storytelling inspiration. “A Very Jonas Christmas Movie” also features seven new tunes by the brothers. None of them leave a significant impression or have made it into my holiday playlist, but they function well within the movie.

It all culminates in a gooey ending that you can see coming a mile off, but does anybody really want their expectations subverted in a Christmas movie? I found “A Very Jonas Christmas” movie particularly wholesome. The quest to get home is a fun narrative framework, the overall message of making time for family is valuable, and the Jonas Brothers aren’t afraid to gently poke fun at themselves, which I certainly didn’t expect.

Clearly, I’m not the only person impressed with “A Very Jonas Christmas Movie.” Over on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a mighty impressive 92% score.

That’s higher than any of Netflix’s new seasonal offerings like “A Merry Little Ex-Mas” (50%), “My Secret Santa” (73%) and “Jingle Bell Heist” (75%). And it’s leaps above Prime Video’s “Oh. What. Fun,” which has managed miserable scores: 36% from critics, and 25% from viewers.

If you’re looking to put together a festive-themed movie marathon over the holidays, I implore you to put “A Very Jonas Christmas Movie” at the top of your list. You don’t even need to be a fan of the band’s music to appreciate this delightful Disney Plus original.

Swifties rejoice because Disney Plus has just served up a double dose of Taylor Swift. Today (December 12) sees the premiere of not just a new Eras Tour movie (yes, it now includes "The Tortured Poets Department" era), but also the first two episodes of a new six-episode docuseries, “Taylor Swift: The End of an Era.”

No, this isn’t her retirement announcement; it’s a behind-the-scenes look at the globe-spanning “The Eras Tour” covering the show’s initial inception, the highs and lows of taking the three-hour concert extravaganza road, and also how Swift fell in love with a certain NFL football player along the way. It’s going to be must-watch television this holiday season in any household containing a Taylor Swift fan (my own contains two dedicated fans!).

I’ve just streamed the first episode, titled “Welcome To The Eras Tour,” and after 45 minutes of pure Swift overload, I’ve come away impressed at the pop star's willingness to show extreme vulnerability, but also wondering if a few moments couldn’t have been trimmed.

‘Taylor Swift: The End of an Era’ is surprisingly raw (at times)

“Taylor Swift: The End of an Era” isn’t a new concept. Several artists have featured in their own behind-the-scenes doc. Swift’s close personal friend and collaborator, Ed Sheeran, has his own Disney Plus show as well. And for much of the runtime, at least in the first episode, “The End of the Era” sticks to the script established by similar docuseries focused on other artists.

That means lots of talking head interviews hyping up the phenomenon that was the Eras Tour, so much footage of adoring fans on the verge of tears, and Swift proudly describing how many in the industry thought the three-hour concert was impossible, only for her to prove all those doubters wrong — well, after all, haters gonna hate, hate, hate ….

This footage is fine, but it lacks much substance, and even as somebody who’s been a fan of Taylor Swift’s music for more than a decade, I found my eyes starting to glaze over after just a few minutes. I know Swift is a superstar. I know the Eras Tour was the most successful concert tour in history. I know her music has touched millions of listeners. Being told these undeniable facts over and over again is hardly gripping television.

What surprised me was when, at around the 10-minute mark, the documentary takes a darker turn and focuses on the events of August 2024 in Vienna, Austria. The three tour dates in the city were cancelled after authorities uncovered a plan to stage a terrorist attack at the concert. I figured this dark chapter of The Eras Tour might feature, but for it to be highlighted in the first episode wasn’t something I expected.

Right after showing news coverage of what happened (or should that be, thankfully didn’t happen) in Vienna, the doc touches on the horrific events in Southport, England, where three young children were murdered while attending a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. Viewers see Taylor Swift at her most vulnerable in the aftermath, and as a Brit who followed that story live, I got a little choked up recalling the sense of heartbreak that gripped the world over such senseless and cruel violence.

These portions of the doc are certainly not fun, and they tonally clash with the majority of the documentary footage, which is full of sequins, sparkles and Swift’s songbook, but I’m glad they were included, and particularly given such a prominence in the premiere episode. It would have been easy to gloss over these darker events, but including them reminds us why celebrating a force for good like the Eras Tour matters.

The first episode of “Taylor Swift: The End of an Era” ends on a triumphant note, as Swift takes to the Wembley Stadium stage and finds solace in the sold-out crowd singing along to every word. And as the credits started to roll, I was already eager to click the “play next episode” button. Though I’m hoping that future chapters offer a little more insight into the tour’s inner workings, and are slightly less focused on telling viewers over and over how Taylor Swift is the modern equivalent of The Beatles.

In one of the boldest Hollywood-tech mashups we’ve seen yet, Disney is officially joining forces with OpenAI — and the deal is about way more than money.

The Walt Disney Company announced today that it’s making a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI and signing a three-year character licensing agreement that will bring its massive universe of IP to Sora, OpenAI’s AI-powered video generator.

That means Mickey Mouse, Elsa, Darth Vader, Buzz Lightyear, Iron Man and more than 200 Disney-owned characters are headed to generative AI — legally, for the first time.

What this means for Sora and ChatGPT users

The deal makes Disney the first major entertainment studio to license characters to Sora and ChatGPT’s image tools. Fans will soon be able to generate their own short videos and illustrations using iconic characters from across Disney Animation, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars.

Even more surprising? Disney plans to curate some of the best AI-generated creations and feature them on Disney+, essentially blending fan art with studio streaming.

Imagine a Sora-generated clip of Moana and R2-D2 sailing across galaxies — and then seeing it go live on Disney+.

From AI threat to AI embrace

While the agreement opens the door to some wildly creative fan experiences, there are clear boundaries: real actor likenesses and voices are off limits. So you won’t be able to make Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones say new lines or hear Scarlett Johansson’s voice reimagined through AI.

The tools will generate new content using known characters, but not recreate or mimic actors — a key clause that likely helped ease legal concerns from the Screen Actors Guild and other unions.

This moment marks a major shift in how Hollywood approaches AI. Not long ago, Disney was on the side of rights-holders pushing back against AI platforms that used copyrighted characters without permission.

Now, Disney is turning that friction into opportunity. In the announcement, CEO Bob Iger called the move a way to “expand storytelling possibilities while protecting the rights of our creators.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called it a blueprint for “responsible collaboration between legacy entertainment and AI.”

The partnership also makes Disney a major OpenAI customer, with plans to integrate ChatGPT’s capabilities internally and possibly across Disney+ as new interactive features roll out.

The takeaway

Sora launched earlier this year as a text-to-video tool, generating short cinematic clips from written prompts. But it lacked access to licensed characters — meaning anything resembling Disney IP had to be vague, indirect or scrubbed.

That changes now.

With Disney’s blessing, AI-powered storytelling is going mainstream. Fans will be able to create mashups, parodies and tributes with official character integration — and some of the best content may end up streaming on the same service that launched Frozen and Avengers: Endgame.

With Disney becoming the first studio to go all-in on AI storytelling, it has set the stage for other entertainment giants to follow.

Genre-only channel bundle subscriptions are coming to YouTube TV, one of the best streaming services, in 2026. The streaming platform plans to launch more than 10 subscription options next year, including one focused on sports.

The move was announced via a blog post by Christian Oestlien, YTTV’s vice president and head of subscriptions. Oestlien highlighted a YouTube TV Sports Plan with access to major broadcasts and sports networks like FS1, NBC Sports, and all ESPN channels. You’ll be able to select NFL Sunday Ticket and NFL RedZone as add-ons.

“Our goal is to let you tailor your subscription with more options,” Oestlein wrote. He hinted at the types of genre packages that might be coming, including combined sports and news bundles or a plan focused on family and entertainment content.

No prices have been announced as of this writing. The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand reported that the bundles will be cheaper than the current $82 monthly pricing.

The announcement comes a little less than a month after Google and Disney resolved a lengthy, contentious two-week network carriage contract negotiation. That mid-November blackout frustrated sports fans in the middle of football season and just as the NBA and college basketball seasons were spinning up.

In Disney’s announcement of the multiyear distribution agreement with Google, the company included a curious line: “Select networks to be included in various genre-specific packages.” The media giant described this as a key element of the agreement.

“This new agreement reflects our continued commitment to delivering exceptional entertainment and evolving with how audiences choose to watch,’’ said Disney Entertainment Co-Chairmen Alan Bergman and Dana Walden, and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro said at the time.

Earlier this year, 9to5Google reported that YouTube TV was exploring a Sports & Broadcast package as part of negotiations with Fox. At the time, that bundle would have only included Fox-owned channels like FS1 and Fox News.

It’s a curious reversal from Disney, which sued Sling TV over its Day Passes, which offer live channels for a day, weekend or channel over a monthly subscription. Sling recently won an injunction in that case.

That said, Disney appears comfortable with DirecTV’s Genre Packs, which include Disney-owned channels, as does Fubo.

Having grown up reading the “Percy Jackson” books, hearing that this world would get a more faithful TV adaptation was an exciting surprise back in 2020. One of my core memories of this universe is a teacher reading "The Lightning Thief" aloud during my early school years, followed by a school trip to watch the first movie adaptation in theaters (controversial, I know).

But over the years, I’ve come to realize that the movies earned their bad reputation for a reason: They weren’t faithful to the source material whatsoever. That’s why I admired the first season of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” so much, because it honors the rich world Rick Riordan first created. Now, with the second season finally here, I’m even more excited, especially because the second book, "The Sea of Monsters," has always been my personal favorite.

“Percy Jackson” season 2, in simple words, is a grander, funnier, and more epic adventure. I’ve already seen the first four episodes, and I know that long-time fans will appreciate how much care and attention have gone into putting this next big quest on the small screen. Now available to stream on Disney Plus, here’s why it’s worth joining Percy and the gang on their latest adventure.

‘Percy Jackson’ season 2 feels like a cinematic journey

Adapting books can be a very challenging feat, especially when the pages require your imagination to run wild. Riordan clearly created a world that each reader may picture differently, so translating that into a TV show can seem almost impossible. Yet the first season of “Percy Jackson” proved it can be done when you stay faithful to the core moments in the books and have a cast that knows their characters inside and out. That’s why season 2 works just as well, if not better than season 1.

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” season 2 takes place about a year after the events of season 1, now adapting the second book, "The Sea of Monsters." Episode 1 kicks off with Grover (Aryan Simhadri) on a mission to find Pan in a mysterious, otherworldly forest. During his search, he discovers an artifact known as the Golden Fleece, a powerful object that becomes the catalyst for this season’s story.

Meanwhile, over the course of the school year, Percy (Walker Scobell) has kept in touch with Grover and Annabeth (Leah Jeffries) and befriends a new student at home named Tyson (Daniel Diemer), who turns out to be his half-brother.

From there, we return to Camp Half-Blood, only to discover that Thalia’s tree (the magical barrier protecting the camp) has been poisoned. This leaves our heroes no time for catching up or enjoying typical camp activities, as a new quest quickly takes shape: Retrieve the Golden Fleece to heal the tree and rescue Grover, who has been kidnapped.

Because the story centers on the group’s journey through the Sea of Monsters to reach the island, the stakes are much higher. This translates into more action and a slightly more mature form of storytelling, as the heroes face serious threats like fire‑throwing giants and sirens. At the same time, the season feels grander than the first. The creators clearly excel in the visuals department since the special effects are more developed than in season 1 and look impressively authentic.

Book fans will also be pleased to know that season 2 is establishing the connection between Percy and Annabeth even more, which is important considering they eventually go beyond friendship in later books. It’s a natural development and one that feels genuine because both Scobell and Jeffries have such charming chemistry.

Season 2 does have a noticeable flaw, though, and it’s the exposition-heavy dialogue, a problem that season 1 also struggled with. At times, characters say things that feel unnatural, seemingly just to explain the story to the audience, which can make the pacing feel like a jump from one big event to the next. Still, given the expansive and richly imagined world, it’s largely forgivable. Even so, the season remains a fun and engaging watch, clearly reflecting the effort and care put into bringing Riordan’s universe to life.

Verdict: ‘Percy Jackson’ season 2 is more epic

Even in these first four episodes, “Percy Jackson” season 2 proves that the series has found a structure capable of carrying the rest of the novel adaptations. After two seasons, Walker Scobell, Leah Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri have grown into their roles, bringing charisma and a deep understanding of their characters that allows them to carry the story. Equally important is the bond and friendship between the trio, which makes each character relatable and engaging for audiences.

It's safe to say that fans of the books and the first season will find plenty to enjoy here. Beyond the mythology, the story itself remains engaging, packed with memorable moments and characters who are a joy to watch. The inclusion of Tyson and Clarisse (Dior Goodjohn) in the main storyline adds fresh dynamics and interesting new character beats as well, giving the season a much more chaotic energy.

Overall, season 2 is grander in scale, with bigger stakes, wilder adventures, and more epic moments than before. It only makes me even more excited to see what future seasons have in store.

If you're a Hulu subscriber, you may have just received some bad news. Disney is currently reorganizing how Disney Plus and Hulu work. It's already integrated most Hulu content into the Disney Plus app and rolled out a new app with a Hulu tab across the globe. It even has plans to sunset the Hulu app in 2026. Now, it looks like Disney is getting rid of some Hulu subscription plans for good to focus on its Disney Plus bundles.

As reported by Cord Cutter News, starting today (Dec. 9), Disney will no longer offer the Disney Plus add-on to Hulu subscribers. Additionally, it is automatically canceling this add-on for any current Hulu subscribers who currently have it as part of their plan. Next billing cycle, it will simply be removed from your bill, and you'll lose your Disney Plus access.

Let's get to the important part. If you're reading this and you have a Disney Plus, Hulu bundle, you might be freaking out about your subscription changing. Don't worry. Chances are, this change doesn't impact you.

The plan that's disappearing is very specifically a premium add-on for your Hulu plan. It's a legacy plan that Disney had already been rolling back from customers in the last year (h/t Reddit). It's not the Disney bundle. If you have a Disney Plus bundle of any kind, this change won't affect your subscription at all. It's business as usual for you lot.

What to do if my Disney Plus add-on is gone?

Now, if you do happen to be one of the remaining Hulu subscribers with this Disney Plus add-on, unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to keep your add-on. There's no magic workaround — it's gone. You can either keep your Hulu plan sans Disney Plus, or you can sign up for a Disney Plus, Hulu bundle if you want to regain access to Disney Plus.

Just be warned, though, that if you do choose to get the Disney bundle, you may have to do some tedious admin work, such as re-entering payment methods, updating preferences, etc. You also might lose any metadata previously associated with your Disney Plus content, such as watch history, progress, etc. You might even need to create an entirely new account and cancel your Hulu subscription.

I wish I had better news, but chances are, if you're a Hulu-first user, you might have some more pain coming next year when the Hulu app is shut down. At least now there's a flashy new version of the Disney Plus app that makes it much easier to access your Hulu content than it had been previously.

Last month, the Disney Plus app got a major redesign. Next year, Disney is merging the Disney Plus and Hulu apps into a single Disney Plus app, and it's already integrated a lot of Hulu content into Disney Plus. Ahead of that merger, Disney changed its flagship streaming service app so content would be more easily accessible, including a new navigation bar and more personalized recommendations.

But that app redesign was limited to U.S. subscribers — until now. Yesterday (Dec. 3) Disney announced that the newly redesigned Disney Plus app is being rolled out to all international subscribers.

That means subscribers outside the U.S. will now get the new user interface with the navigation bar and four tabs: For You, Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN (this change is only on smart TVs and streaming devices). You'll also start to see more personalized recommendations in the For You tab.

Additional changes include a new Live hub, rrepresented by a lightning bolt icon on the sidebar); a new video display in the hero (top) carousel; a new, more dynamic brand row that now also includes Hulu Originals, FX, ESPN Originals, and ABC News; and updated content rows that feature cinematic poster-style artwork and now include badges like “Season Finales," “New Series," and “New Movies.”

Now, just because you can access content from all three brands doesn't mean that all of the content from all three is now available on Disney Plus. Access to ESPN content requires that you be subscribed to a bundle with ESPN included. Hulu content, meanwhile, also requires a bundle with a Hulu subscription, but even then, not everything from Hulu will be available through the Hulu hub on your Disney Plus app. Disney also says that only some international users have access to ESPN, and that ESPN's availability will vary based on country.

U.S. users have been able to use the updated app for about a month now, so if you've read this far, you might be wondering, "What's in it for me?" Well, the app itself isn't changing if you're in the U.S., but Disney is adding a supported device, guaranteed to give your workouts a boost.

Disney Plus now available on Peloton

If you've ever used a Peloton, you know it's got a screen perfect for watching shows and movies. But you bought your bike or treadmill to work out, not to binge-watch.

Well, now you can do both. Yesterday (Dec. 3), Disney announced that you can now stream Disney Plus content directly on your Peloton equipment. No restrictions either; you can watch the full Disney Plus library.

To access Disney Plus on your Peloton, you just need to do two simple steps. On your screen, tap the Entertainment tab. Then, select Disney Plus and enter your Disney account email and password to log in. Once you do that, you can binge-watch till you drop, though maybe take a break from binging and biking if you think you're actually going to collapse.

"Percy Jackson and the Olympians” season 2 bolts onto our screens next week on December 10. If it’s anything like the first run, we’re gearing up for more mythic monsters, stormy sea‑quests and epic hero drama. With new threats and the fate of Camp Half-Blood hanging in the balance, now’s the perfect time for a quick refresher.

When it debuted on Disney Plus in late 2023, the show quickly became one of the platform’s most-watched series, racking up more than three billion minutes of viewing over the following year. Even before season 2’s premiere, the show was already renewed for a third season. So it’s safe to say the world is more than ready for the next chapter.

Fair warning: I’ll be spoiling major events from season 1. So, without further ado, here are five things you should remember before “Percy Jackson” season 2.

1. Season 2 will follow the second book

Season 2 will naturally dive straight into “The Sea of Monsters,” the second book of Rick Riordan’s series. The story follows Percy (Walker Scobell) and his friends on a dangerous quest to save Camp Half-Blood after its protective tree is poisoned.

Their mission is twofold: rescue the captured satyr Grover (Aryan Simhadri) and retrieve the legendary Golden Fleece, a magical artifact capable of restoring the camp’s defenses.

Along the way, they face monstrous beasts, treacherous seas, and supernatural threats, including the mysterious sirens that test their courage and loyalty. In short, expect a bigger, more dangerous journey this season, one that even Riordan says will be “bigger and even better” than season 1 (h/t People).

2. Luke is the traitor

Before leaving camp to go on his first quest, Percy visits the camp’s Oracle (a Delphi-like priestess), who delivers a cryptic prophecy: One of Percy’s close companions will betray him on the journey. The Oracle’s prophecy comes true when it’s revealed that Luke (Charlie Bushnell) is the traitor.

Back at Camp, Percy confronts Luke and learns that Luke has been acting under Kronos’s influence. Luke admits he helped steal the bolt and helm (on Ares’s orders) in hopes of helping the gods (Kronos had disguised himself in Luke’s body during parts of the quest). So it turns out Percy’s trusted friend has been the bad guy all along.

Luke’s allegiance with Kronos is now out in the open, confirming that Kronos survived and is plotting an all-out attack on Olympus, which plays a crucial part in season 2.

3. Percy now has a half-brother

One of season 2’s big surprises is that Percy will finally meet Tyson (Daniel Diemer), his Cyclops half-brother. Tyson is introduced early on (as a friendly new kid living with Percy’s mom) before Percy and the audience learn that Tyson is also a son of Poseidon. Suddenly, Percy has a brother to look after, which brings both comic moments and real emotional stakes.

Even Annabeth (Leah Jeffries) is wary of Tyson (she “hates all Cyclops” due to her past), so Percy is caught between embracing a new family and smoothing over tension with his friends. As Entertainment Weekly notes, Tyson turns out to have “a fantastic mix of sweetness and vulnerability” under his big exterior, so fans can look forward to seeing Percy challenged and changed by this new brotherly bond.

4. Clarisse will play a bigger role

Clarisse La Rue (Dior Goodjohn) won’t be on the sidelines anymore. In season 2, she sets off on her own quest, no longer just Percy’s rival but a full-fledged hero on a mission. Even the official synopsis explicitly lists Clarisse among Percy’s allies on the Sea of Monsters journey, so expect her to get a lot more screen time.

Goodjohn hints that Clarisse’s motivations will run deep this season, and indeed, fans have speculated she may be competing for the Golden Fleece or otherwise trying to prove herself. Whatever the specifics, it’s clear the show will give Clarisse moments to shine: season 2 is set to flesh out her character and show why the daughter of Ares is a hero in her own right.

5. Percy is still getting used to his powers

Finally, season 2 is very much Percy’s story of growing into his powers. He’s still only a teenager, and the show suggests there’s much more to learn about being the son of Poseidon.

Viewers can expect to see Percy struggling to master the water magic that runs in his blood (from summoning storms to manipulating the sea), all while coping with normal-kid fears and doubts. By season’s end, Percy won’t just be wiser to his fate but he’ll be stronger in his powers, ready to protect Olympus alongside his friends Annabeth and Grover.
