An ongoing security investigation by Socket's John Tuckner (via Bleeping Computer) has discovered a search-hijacking campaign that involves 319 Chrome extensions with a combined 13.4 million downloads. The malicious extensions redirect search queries through tracking servers to generate advertising revenue from Bing and Yahoo.

It's more than double from Tuckner's April report that found "only" 57 Chrome extensions and 6 million downloads.

According to Tuckner, the malicious extensions are usually found on websites advertising tools that are labeled as "PDF converter", "AI search", or "safe search".

"These extensions were created by a handful of organized operators all working from the same idea: quietly take over the browser's default search engine, route every query through a suspicious proxy server, and collect partner referral payments from Yahoo or Bing under a syndication partner ID," Tuckner wrote.

The extensions apparently aren't found on the official Chrome Web Store either. Rather, they're unlisted and are only really found through the shady advertising.

How the extensions work

Apparently, the extensions use Chrome's built-in 'chrome_settings_override' setting that lets them replace your default search provider.

What this means is that your searches are captured as they pass through the operator's server. After that the redirect could be sent through a site with malware attached, though currently, per Tuckner they're mostly routing to Yahoo and Bing and to falsely claim advertising revenue.

"The search referral revenue is a profitable watering hole while the proxy operator can wait for data to accumulate and targets to surface before redirecting to malicious search results or landing pages for phishing or other malicious downloads," Tuckner said.

As of this writing, the report says that most of the extensions have been removed the Chrome Web Store when the report was published, however, new ones are constantly being added.

"Ultimately, Google can benefit from more advertisements being run and more extensions being listed in the marketplace so there may not be an urgent reason to police this activity too broadly."

How to stay safe

Even if Google isn't policing this specific type of extension, malicious add-ons do slip through to the Chrome Web Store from time to time. When it comes to extensions, you need to be extra careful when downloading and adding them to your browser.

Normally, we would recommend you stick to well-known extensions from trusted brands. However, sometimes a lone developer creates one that does exactly what you need.

What it's about: Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is now middle-aged, but far from retirement. Meanwhile, Harrison (Jack Alcott) continues his own pursuit of justice, while Dexter’s old adversary Charley (Uma Thurman) returns with unfinished business.

'Nocturne' (Apple TV)

Genre: Crime thriller series

What it's about: Liev Schreiber plays Jonah Lynn, a former soldier and Philadelphia homicide detective who trades big-city crime for a quieter life in rural Pennsylvania. The catch? Serial killer Jurek Walter (Stephen Graham) has other plans, and Jonah’s family is in his crosshairs. With one victim still missing, Jonah turns to his surrogate daughter, FBI agent Saga Bauer (Zazie Beetz), to help track down the imprisoned killer’s final loose end.

Why you should watch it: If you thought moving to a small town meant fewer murder-related headaches ... well, I have a bridge to sell you. Schreiber brings his brooding intensity to a detective with everything to lose, while Graham looks primed to make a truly chilling villain. Add Beetz to the mix and you have a grim game of cat and mouse where prison bars may not be enough to keep the bad guy at bay.

In the meantime, the Ravens have dropped to the bottom of the AFC North after blowing double-digit leads in each of their past two games. Josh Allen and the Bills, meanwhile, are fresh from a bye.

Caleb Williams has racked up 613 yards through the air since his return from injury and even the Bears defense is beginning to find its feet, while the Seahawks defense annihilated the mighty Chiefs offense last weekend, and reigning offensive player of the year Jaxon Smith-Njigba went off. Chicago have had a few days' more rest, but the reigning champions have won each of their past five primetime games at home. Strap in.

'Hanging By a Wire' (2026)

"Hanging by a Wire," a nail-biting new documentary on Paramount+ follows a single terrifying day in August 2023 in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan when a cable car malfunction left eight people stranded more than 900 feet off the ground. After one of the chair-lift cables snapped, the terrified passengers, including six children, were literally hanging by a wire as officials on the ground rushed to stage a rescue.

Among them were the fathers of some of the boys, a journalist covering the story, the district police chief coordinating rescue efforts, a helicopter pilot, a cable car operator, and two zipliners who together recount an unforgettable day. “Hanging by a Wire” earned a strong 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and has been selected as Pakistan’s first documentary submission for the international feature Oscar race.

'Gone Girl' (2014)

For one of the best psychological thrillers of the past 15 years, look no further than "Gone Girl," master filmmaker David Fincher's hit adaptation of Gillian Flynn's 2012 bestselling novel. It’s the kind of movie that sinks its hooks into you from the get-go, with a real sense of momentum and twists that will leave your jaw on the floor.

On the day of their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) comes home to find his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has disappeared. As the search gets underway, it quickly devolves into a viral media circus, as Amy is a minor celebrity for being the inspiration for her parents' acclaimed children's book series. Public sympathy drains to suspicion, however, when all the dots don't quite line up in Nick's story ....

'Dinner for Schmucks' (2010)

A lot of forgettable comedies came out in the 2010s, and "Dinner for Schmucks" has all the hallmarks of them: arguably too much gross-out humor, a bloated cast of comedy talent, Steve Carell at the height of his "Office" fame. Still, I have a soft spot for this terribly endearing screwball comedy, in part because, to this day, my friends and I quote Carell's inspirational speech near the end. It's good dumb fun that'll warm your heart.

A group of L.A. financiers meets regularly for dinner that doubles as a competition: who can bring the best idiot along as a guest for everyone to make fun of. The 1998 French film on which it's based, "Le Dîner des Cons," is meaner and funnier, but Paul Rudd is charming as a corporate ladder climber just slimy enough to get in on this circus when he finds the holy grail of schmucks: a taxidermist with a heart of gold (Carell). Jemaine Clement also makes an unhinged cameo as the hairiest artist known to man.

This weekend marks the end of a month (bye October!) and the start of a new one (hello November!), which means a fresh slate of new movies and TV shows landing on the top streaming services, of which Netflix is obviously one. November 2026 will bring plenty of buzzy titles to the Netflix platform, from a new season of "Black Doves" to the debut of the limited series "The Altruists." But before we get into all that, we still have the last few days of October left, and they're nothing to sneeze at, content-wise.

Speaking of which, here at Tom's Guide, we've helpfully narrowed your weekend-binge options down to an easy three Netflix shows that will end your month on a high note. First up is the four-part Swedish psychological thriller "A Couple of Lies," which you'll love if you're a fan of dark twists and domestic suspense. Next is "Dangerous Liaisons," a pulpy prelude to Pierre Choderlos de Laclos's classic 18th-century novel. And for some lighter fare, you can't go wrong spending time with country icon Reba McEntire at "Happy's Place"; the second season arrives on Netflix on Sunday, November 1.

Whether you're looking for scheming ex-lovers or sitcom laughs, here are three fresh Netflix releases worth adding to your watchlist this weekend.

'A Couple of Lies'

Adapted from Stefan Ahnhem's best-selling crime novel of the same name, this four-part Swedish thriller is like "The Holiday" gone very wrong: Wealthy spouses Helene (Frida Gustavsson) and Carl (Fares Fares) agree to a seemingly idyllic home swap with fellow married couple Scarlett (Emma Appleton) and Adam (Jakob Oftebro), trading their Stockholm home for the latter's sun-drenched villa in Sicily

However, that happy trade turns toxic as secrets and betrayals begin to emerge. What started as a picture-perfect exchange morphs into a twisted game of manipulation, mistrust and, gulp, murder. Diarmuid Noyes, Magnus Krepper, Anna Bjelkerud and Lars Väringer also star, with Kasper Barfoed ("The Asset," "Trom") in the director's seat.

'Dangerous Liaisons'

First airing on Starz back in 2022, this eight-episode period drama serves as a bold prequel and origin story to Pierre Choderlos de Laclos's 1782 novel of the same name.

Set in pre-revolutionary Paris on the eve of the French Revolution, the historical drama chronicles the early days when the Marquise de Merteuil (Alice Englert) and the Vicomte de Valmont (Nicholas Denton) met as passionate young lovers, before they were scheming adversaries. The duo claws their way to the decadent heights of the French aristocracy using seduction and deception, and destroying lives around them in the process.

'Happy's Place' season 2

Season 3 of "Happy's Place" just premiered last Friday, Oct. 23, on NBC, but if you haven't yet caught up with the second season of the Reba McEntire-led workplace comedy, now's your chance: All 18 episodes of season two will arrive on Netflix this Sunday.

If you missed it, "Happy's Place" stars McEntire as Bobbie, a Tennessee woman who inherits her late father's tavern in Knoxville, only to discover, to her shock, that she shares the inheritance with her long-lost, much younger half-sister, Isabella (Belissa Escobedo). Season 2 sees the women continuing to navigate the reopening of the tavern and, in Bobbie's case, her burgeoning feelings for the venue's head chef Emmett (Rex Linn).

1. ‘The Gilded Age’ season 4 (HBO)

Genre: Historical drama
Premiere date: Episode 1 on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 9 p.m. ET
What it's about: New York’s social war is back on, and this time, the silk gloves are coming off. Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) is trying to repair her marriage to George (Morgan Spector), while Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) plots her return to the top with a dinner for President Grover Cleveland (guest star Jim Gaffigan). Meanwhile, Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and Larry (Harry Richardson) inch toward a reunion, and Peggy (Denée Benton) faces a very opinionated mother-in-law (Phylicia Rashad).
Why it's worth your time: Season 4 brings back the sumptuous costumes, razor-sharp insults and high-stakes dinner parties, but this time, Bertha's new-money confidence is shaken by the possibility of the D-word (divorce). That would be a social killer that no amount of cash can paper over.

2. ‘Verity’ (digital)

Genre: Psychological thriller/romance

What it’s about: Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) is a struggling writer who lands a very lucrative gig ghostwriting for bestselling novelist Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), who’s been left paralyzed and catatonic after a car accident. At Verity’s secluded estate, Lowen becomes entangled with Verity’s husband (Josh Hartnett) and discovers a secret manuscript containing a horrifying confession. Suddenly, the job comes with a lot more questions than paychecks.
Why it’s worth your time: The latest Colleen Hoover adaptation is glossy, nasty, sexy fun featuring a trio of characters you absolutely should not trust. The movie keeps playing games with truth and perception, daring you to decide who’s lying — and then making you question your answer.

3. ‘Nocturne’ (Apple TV)

Genre: Crime drama thriller
Available now: 2 episodes (about 1 hour each)
What it's about: Liev Schreiber plays Jonah Lynn, a former soldier and Philadelphia homicide detective who trades big-city crime for a quieter life in rural Pennsylvania. The catch? Serial killer Jurek Walter (Stephen Graham) has other plans, and Jonah’s family is in his crosshairs. With one victim still missing, Jonah turns to his surrogate daughter, FBI agent Saga Bauer (Zazie Beetz), to help track down the imprisoned killer’s final loose end.
Why it’s worth your time: If you thought moving to a small town meant fewer murder-related headaches ... ha! Schreiber brings his brooding intensity to a detective with everything to lose, while Graham looks primed to make a truly chilling villain. Add Beetz to the mix and you have a grim game of cat and mouse where prison bars may not be enough to keep the bad guy at bay.

4. ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ season 2 (Paramount+)

What it’s about: Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) has made it to middle age, but he's not anywhere close to retiring. Meanwhile, his son Harrison (Jack Alcott) continues his own pursuit of justice, while an old adversary (Uma Thurman) returns with unfinished business.
Why it’s worth your time: Michael C. Hall’s serial killer with a conscience is back, and this time he’s facing the one foe he can’t stab his way out of: a midlife crisis. With Brian Cox and Dan Stevens joining the murder-happy mix, season 2 promises a fresh batch of twisted cat-and-mouse games. Father-son bonding has never looked so blood-soaked.

What it's about: After a global flu pandemic wipes out most of civilization, Hig (Jacob Elordi) ekes out an isolated existence at a Colorado airfield with his dog Jasper and his heavily armed survivalist partner Bangley (Josh Brolin). But when Hig picks up a mysterious radio transmission, he goes in search of whoever is on the other end — and maybe proof that humanity is worth saving after all.
Why it's worth your time: Ridley Scott delivers some striking post-apocalyptic imagery and genuinely memorable moments, even if the movie never quite turns its promising pieces into a satisfying whole. Think of it as a survival thriller with big ideas, gorgeous desolation and, naturally, a very good dog.

6. ‘The One About Matthew Perry’ (Netflix)

Genre: Celebrity documentary

What it's about: For a decade, Matthew Perry made Chandler Bing the king of the sarcastic comeback on "Friends." Offscreen, he was fighting a much harder battle. This three-part documentary traces Perry’s rise to fame, struggles with addiction and efforts to help others in recovery, drawing on firsthand accounts from his sister, longtime friends and Hollywood collaborators.
Why it’s worth your time: You know Chandler’s one-liners by heart, but how well did you know the man delivering them? This doc goes beyond the sitcom nostalgia with never-before-heard testimony and private family footage. The result is a more intimate portrait of a beloved comic talent whose greatest legacy may have been his willingness to speak openly about addiction.

7. ‘Minions and Monsters’ (Peacock)

Genre: Animated comedy
Runtime: 1h 30m
What it's about: It’s 1927, and the Minions are ready for their Hollywood close-up. After stumbling into the silent-film era and becoming movie stars, they promptly blow it all up by unleashing actual monsters on Los Angeles. Now they have to save the world from the very creatures they accidentally created.
Why it’s worth your time: Look, the Minions remain the Minions. But the latest film in the franchise has a genuinely clever hook: a love letter to old-school Hollywood wrapped around all that yellow, googly-eyed chaos. Kids get the slapstick and giant monsters; adults get the classic-cinema jokes.

• Inquiring about your Amazon subscriptions and benefits: Now you can ask Alexa for Shopping about your Amazon-themed subscriptions, such as “What are my Prime benefits?” and “How much have I saved with Prime this year. I’ll be sure to use this feature to find out more about my Audible, Music Unlimited and Luna Premium subscriptions.
• Manage subscriptions: Now you can tell Alexa for Shopping to “Skip my next delivery” or “Change my delivery to every [number] months to alter your ongoing Amazon subscriptions. I’m sure this applies to Amazon’s recurring delivery service for household, grocery, and personal care items.
• Update instructions for deliveries: If you want to tell Alexa for Shopping to modify your account’s delivery instructions, it’s as easy as telling it “Change the delivery instructions on my account” and “Add delivery instructions on my [city] address.”
• Get to the bottom of billing and payment questions: Telling Alexa for Shopping to “Show my gift card balance,” notifying it that “I have an unrecognized charge on my account” and asking it “Where is my refund?” is now possible—resolving any billing and payment errors you may have is thankfully now a thing with Amazon’s AI shopping assistant.

A month prior, Amazon launched another useful feature that improved Alexa for Shopping. “Update Me When” update has given users personalized notifications that alert them when something new or relevant happens around a new product release. Simply telling it “Update me when a new Kindle Paperwhite launches” sets up a weekly announcement check-in that will only notify users when something major happens on that front. Right now, all of those aforementioned Alexa for Shopping features are available to all US Amazon customers.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang may have been the target of a Chinese intelligence operation, and according to a bombshell new report, President Donald Trump knew about it for nearly a year.

A New York Times investigation published Thursday reveals that American intelligence officials concluded a Chinese businesswoman with close ties to Huang was passing information to Beijing. The woman, identified as Alice Huang, was also an executive at a company already under investigation for allegedly helping Chinese businesses obtain restricted Nvidia AI chips.

Even more surprising, Trump was reportedly briefed on the findings about a year ago but took no action, while Jensen Huang himself was never warned that someone in his business circle was suspected of working for Chinese intelligence.

"We often receive updates from the U.S. government regarding parties and entities of concern and always act accordingly," a spokesperson for Nvidia tells Tom's Guide. "The diversion allegations against this regional cloud were thoroughly investigated and debunked last year."

 The allegations arrive at a particularly sensitive moment for Nvidia, which supplies much of the computing power behind the world's leading AI systems, including ChatGPT and other popular chatbots.

How a suspected Chinese intelligence asset got close to Nvidia

At the center of the investigation is Alice Huang, also known as Huang Le, a Chinese businesswoman and senior executive at Megaspeed, a Singapore-based data center company.

According to the Times, U.S. intelligence agencies were already monitoring Huang because they feared Megaspeed was helping Chinese companies access advanced Nvidia chips despite American export restrictions.

During that surveillance, officials reportedly discovered that she had developed a close relationship with Jensen Huang. The two were seen together during visits to Taiwan, including appearances in 2024 and 2025.

Intelligence officials eventually concluded that Alice Huang was providing information to Beijing, raising concerns that the Nvidia CEO himself could be a target.

"Megaspeed has been no different than many other regional cloud customers. Jensen’s interactions with Ms. Huang are not unusual or unexpected. Meetings with customers are part of a CEO's job; Jensen talks with thousands of customer executives every year," a spokesperson for Nvidia tells Tom's Guide.

No evidence shows that Jensen Huang knowingly participated in any intelligence operation. In fact, U.S. officials reportedly believed he was unaware of the woman's suspected activities.

Nvidia has pushed back against suggestions that the relationship was unusual, explaining that Huang regularly meets executives from companies that purchase its technology.

"Our regional cloud customers receive ordinary business information — not sensitive NVIDIA trade secrets—and zero information relevant to national security," the Nvidia spokesperson tells Tom's Guide.

Arguably the most surprising detail in the Times investigation is what reportedly happened after U.S. intelligence officials identified the potential threat.

Trump was briefed on the findings about a year ago, but the administration did not take action against the suspected operation, according to the report.

The Times links that decision to the administration's reluctance to disrupt Nvidia's chip sales or further complicate trade negotiations with China, although the precise reasoning behind the decision remains unclear.

Meanwhile, Jensen Huang reportedly never received what intelligence officials call a defensive briefing, a warning sometimes given to Americans who may be targeted by foreign intelligence services.

That doesn't necessarily mean officials ignored the threat. Alerting Jensen Huang could have revealed that Alice Huang was under surveillance, potentially jeopardizing the investigation. But this raises concerns about how the U.S. government handles security issues involving executives whose companies play an enormous role in the American economy.

Those concerns extend beyond Nvidia's business dealings. Jensen Huang has become an influential voice in Washington's AI policy discussions and has developed a close relationship with Trump.

For intelligence agencies, someone with access to a technology executive involved in those conversations could potentially learn valuable information without ever getting near classified documents.

Why Nvidia's AI chips are at the center of the controversy

The suspected intelligence operation is only one part of a much larger dispute over who gets access to the world's most powerful AI technology. Nvidia makes the advanced processors used to train and run many of today's leading AI models. These chips are essential infrastructure for companies developing increasingly capable AI systems.

The U.S. has restricted exports of certain advanced AI chips to China over national security concerns, particularly the possibility that the technology could strengthen Beijing's military and intelligence capabilities.

But enforcing those restrictions is complicated since Chinese companies can potentially gain access to Nvidia-powered computing resources through data centers located in other countries, without necessarily taking physical possession of the chips.

That's where Megaspeed enters the picture. The Singapore-based company has purchased large quantities of Nvidia technology, and U.S. authorities have been investigating whether its operations helped Chinese customers circumvent American export controls.

According to the Times, the investigation intensified after officials inspecting a data center in Malaysia found Nvidia equipment that was still boxed rather than installed.

The discovery raised questions about where the equipment was ultimately intended to go. Nvidia has denied finding evidence that Megaspeed was illegally supplying chips to China, and the company says it complies with applicable export regulations. Megaspeed has also said it is investigating the allegations.

What Nvidia and China are saying

Nvidia disputes any suggestion that Jensen Huang's interactions with Alice Huang were improper.

In a statement reported by Tom's Hardware, Nvidia said Huang speaks with thousands of customer executives every year and that its regional cloud customers receive ordinary business information, not sensitive company secrets or information relevant to national security.

The company also said it expects U.S. authorities to alert it when a person or organization poses a security threat.

"The PRC government is not seeking NVIDIA products from regional clouds. Instead, the PRC government blocked U.S. AI chips, protecting its own industry and resulting in the largest write-offs in U.S. tech history," the spokesperson for Nvidia tells Tom's Guide.

Megaspeed has reportedly retained outside legal counsel to investigate the allegations, while the Chinese Embassy in Washington has rejected the claims as unfounded.

Importantly, no public evidence establishes that Jensen Huang passed sensitive information to Chinese intelligence, knew about Alice Huang's alleged activities or violated U.S. export restrictions.

What this could mean for AI

For anyone using ChatGPT, Gemini or other AI tools, this story isn't about an immediate threat to personal data or a reason to stop using AI. But it offers a rare look at the geopolitical tensions surrounding the hardware that makes those tools possible.

The technology behind today's AI boom depends heavily on a relatively small number of companies, with Nvidia occupying a particularly influential position. And while the investigation doesn't establish that Chinese intelligence obtained sensitive information from Nvidia, it highlights just how complicated the relationship between business, national security and AI has become.

"Building American AI infrastructure worldwide has been a core U.S. policy goal of every Administration.  Attacking American industry for honoring longstanding U.S. law and policy undercuts national security," the Nvidia spokesperson tells Tom's Guide.

October 2026 is quickly coming to an end (how did that happen?!), which means you have one last weekend to catch up on some of the month's great Paramount+ titles before a fresh wave of TV shows and movies comes surging onto the streaming service.

With Halloween set for this Saturday, there are some fittingly scary and supernatural shows ready to be added to your weekend watchlist, from a new season of the serial-killer drama "Dexter: Resurrection" to a festive All Hallows Eve-themed special from CBS sitcom "Ghosts." And if you want something entirely out of the spooky realm, there's also the high-stakes season finale of "The Challenge: Cutthroat," with competitors having to navigate the intense heat and humidity of the Thai jungle for half a million bucks.

That should keep you busy enough until November rolls around on Sunday, no? Here are three newly added Paramount+ shows you need to binge-watch this weekend.

'Dexter: Resurrection" season 2

Genre: Crime drama/dark comedy

What it’s about: Michael C. Hall is back as TV's most famous serial killer, Dexter Morgan, who this time around is not only navigating murder — he's hunting a new wave of killers in New York City, including a long-evasive criminal with decades of victims — but also a midlife crisis. All the while, his son Harrison (Jack Alcott) is now 21 years old (after that three-year time jump) and working as a rookie in the NYPD's homicide division alongside Detective Claudette Wallace (Kadia Saraf). That post will draw the Morgan men into "their darkest chapter yet," promises Paramount.

Why you should watch it: If all of that doesn't sound dramatic enough, we've got quite a starry season 2 cast to look forward to: Alongside Hall and Alcott, Uma Thurman, James Remar and Desmond Harrington are returning, with "Succession" great Brian Cox, Dan Stevens and Gabriel Luna joining the cast for the new episodes.

'Ghosts' Halloween special

Genre: Supernatural sitcom

What it’s about: It's only natural that a show called "Ghosts" would have a Halloween special. Ahead of its sixth season, set to premiere in 2027, the lighthearted horror-comedy is dropping the first of two holiday specials this fall: an hour-long, All Hallows' Eve-inspired edition, available to watch on both CBS and Paramount+ beginning October 29. The two-part holiday edition will see Kyle (Ben Feldman) step in to help Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) manage Woodstone Manor and its myriad ghosts while Samantha (Rose McIver) is away in Australia filming "Polar Opposites."

Why you should watch it: As mentioned, it'll be at least until early 2027 before "Ghosts" season 6 arrives on CBS and Paramount+, so the Halloween special and upcoming "Ghostmas" edition in December are a nice between-seasons opportunity to hang with our favorite TV ghouls.

'The Challenge" season 42

Genre: Reality competition

What it’s about: Yes, it seems unfathomable that there have been so many, but we're officially at the end of the 42nd season of MTV's "The Challenge," the long-running reality competition that brings together alumni from various reality TV franchises and tasks them with completing grueling physical and mental challenges for a hefty cash prize and some serious bragging rights. The two-part season finale of "The Challenge: Cutthroat," which arrived on Paramount+ on October 28, sees one determined team take home over $500,000.

Why you should watch it: After this many years, "The Challenge" knows how to throw a big finale competition, and this season looks no exception, with a two-day endurance race in Thailand and franchise icons like Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio, Chris “C.T.” Tamburello and Cara Maria Sorbello still in the mix for the money.

Disaster films naturally come with built-in drama, with ordinary people thrust into life-or-death scenarios at the highest stakes — facing Mother Nature herself — and having to contend with hostile environments, family separation, social collapse, and their own mortality.

Inspired by the real-life Category 5 hurricane that made a devastating landfall near Acapulco, Mexico, in 2023, "Surviving Hurricane Otis" follows estranged half-brothers Wirpul (Benny Emmanuel) and Candi (Kristyan Ferrer), who are working aboard a yacht when the tropical storm hits. Trapped at sea without a working motor or land communication, the siblings must get past their personal issues to ensure their survival in a lethal ocean.

It's quite the dramatic watch, and if you want more of the same survivalist vibe, here are three movies with a similar fight-for-your-life fierceness and emotional heft for you to watch next.

'The Impossible'

Like "Surviving Hurricane Otis," "The Impossible" is a family drama wrapped in a disaster flick. It's also based on a true story: the harrowing real-life experience of María Belón and her family in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Dr. Maria Bennett (Naomi Watts), her husband Henry (Ewan McGregor), and their three young sons — Lucas (Tom Holland, in his feature film debut), Thomas (Samuel Joslin), and Simon (Oaklee Pendergast) — are vacationing at a tropical beach resort in Thailand when a massive tsunami hits and violently tears the family apart. Injured and split into two factions (mom with Lucas, dad with the younger boys), the Bennetts desperately seek reunion and survival amidst catastrophic destruction.

'The Perfect Storm'

Also based on a true story — that of the Andrea Gail, an American commercial swordfishing boat that was lost at sea in the North Atlantic after the devastation of the so-called Perfect Storm of 1991 — this 2000 disaster thriller stars George Clooney as Billy Tyne, a Gloucester-based captain who, along with his crew, decides to undertake one last fishing trip before the end of an otherwise lackluster season.

As the crew sails further and further out into the deep blue to reap their treasures, an unusually intense storm system starts brewing. Soon, the men find themselves battling a historically raging sea that puts them all in mortal danger.

'All is Lost'

In "Surviving Hurricane Otis," Candi and Wirpul at least have each other to lean on while trying to weather a severe storm. In J.C. Chandor's 2013 survival drama "All is Lost," Robert Redford — playing a veteran mariner who is credited simply as "Our Man" — is sadly alone aboard his stranded vessel, contending with violent natural elements (thunderous storms, prowling sharks), damaged navigation equipment, dwindling supplies, and a quickly sinking yacht.

The lifelong boatman has to resourcefully tap into all his sailing skills and physical strength (Redford was 77 years old during filming!) to make it back to land alive. The gripping drama scored a Golden Globe win for its moving score by Alex Ebert, and earned a Best Actor nomination for Redford's stunning one-man performance.

Apple has just announced two new flagship laptops: the MacBook Pro OLED and the MacBook Pro M6. The former is the company’s first touchscreen OLED MacBook, while the latter updates last year’s MacBook Pro M5. Both should be fantastic laptops for pro users, but which one should you buy?

We haven't tested either of these new MacBooks yet, but based on what we know, they shouldn’t have trouble landing on our best MacBooks page.

To that end, here’s everything you need to know about the MacBook Pro OLED and MacBook Pro M6 to help you decide which one is right for you. Also, be sure to read our hands-on with the MacBook Pro OLED from the Apple "Pro and Tell" event!

MacBook Pro OLED vs MacBook Pro M6: Specs

MacBook Pro OLED vs MacBook Pro M6: Price

There’s no denying that both new MacBook models cost a pretty penny. That said, one is definitely more affordable than the other (relatively speaking).

The 14-inch MacBook Pro OLED with the M5 Pro chip, 24GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage starts at $2,899, while the 16-inch model with the same specs starts at $3,399. If you want a laptop with the M5 Max chip, the 14-inch model starts at $4,499, while the 16-inch model is $4,799.

Then we have the 14-inch MacBook Pro, which starts at $1,999 and packs an M6 chip with a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. You can add up to 32GB of RAM and 4TB of storage, though that’ll substantially bring up the price.

MacBook Pro OLED vs MacBook Pro M6: Display

The biggest difference between these two MacBooks is their respective displays. The MacBook Pro OLED is the first MacBook with a touchscreen OLED panel, while the MacBook Pro M6 keeps the mini-LED screen of current MacBooks. Depending on what you want or need, this could be the main determining factor in which MacBook you’d buy.

According to Apple, the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display “offers a visual experience unlike any other." That’s no doubt because of the tandem OLED panel, which promises true per-pixel blacks and zero blooming around UI elements.

Apple claims this display can deliver peak SDR and HDR brightness of 2000 nits, which is absolutely eye-scorching. Apple says the tandem OLED technology keeps brightness and grayscale uniform across the entire display. The company also says it precisely calibrates each display for consistency.

On top of that—and I mean that literally—the notch cutout at the top of the panel has been replaced by the Dynamic Island you’ve seen on the best iPhones. This brings Live Activities to the MacBook for the first time.

Lastly, the MacBook Pro OLED has a touchscreen. Apple says it crafted touch input specifically for the Mac, with a touch sensor built directly into the display panel, not layered on top. Our own Mark Spoonauer went hands-on with the MacBook Pro OLED and said that the touchscreen support feels “pretty smooth” as he navigated between apps or used his finger to draw. However, it doesn’t support the Apple Pencil.

Apple didn’t update the MacBook Pro M6's Liquid Retina XDR display, so we already have a good idea of what it can do based on our testing and experience with previous models. Specifically, it has a 14.2-inch Mini-LED display running at 120Hz ProMotion, with a notch cutout at the top and no Dynamic Island-like functionality.

Since the display is the same, our benchmarks for the MacBook Pro M5 should be virtually identical on the new model. That means you’ll get excellent color representation (sRGB and DCI-P3) and color accuracy (Delta E). Even without an OLED, the M6 MacBook Pro’s mini-LED panel should be stunning.

MacBook Pro OLED vs MacBook Pro M6: Design

MacBook Pros have featured the same design since late 2021, but the new MacBook Pro OLED finally ends that streak. While the new design might not be radically different, the changes introduced should make for a laptop that’s easier to travel with.

Because OLED panels don’t require the same backlight array, the MacBook Pro OLED is thinner and lighter than current MacBook Pros. The 14-inch model weighs half a pound less at 3 pounds, while the 16-inch model is just a tad over four pounds. With slimmer borders, the 16-inch display grows to 16.3 inches, while the 14-inch display stays at a more portable 14.2 inches.

Port-wise, the MacBook Pro packs three Thunderbolt 5 ports, an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe, and a headphone jack. It supports up to three external displays with M5 Pro and up to four with M5 Max. It also supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The M6 MacBook Pro has the same port selection, though the USB-C ports are Thunderbolt 4 instead of Thunderbolt 5.

Last but certainly not least, the MacBook Pro OLED resurrects the classic glowing Apple logo on the lid. We haven’t seen this design feature for over eight years, so it’s a nice callback for long-time Apple fans.

MacBook Pro OLED vs MacBook Pro M6: Performance

One of the more intriguing things about the MacBook Pro OLED is that it utilizes the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips found in the existing MacBook Pro models. But while the 14-inch MacBook Pro packs the new M6 chip that first debuted in the new Mac mini M6, the “older” M5 Pro/Max processors are actually more powerful.

We haven't tested the new MacBook Pros yet, but based on our testing of MacBook Pros with M5 Pro and M5 Max, along with benchmarks of the M6 Mac mini, we have a sense of what to expect in terms of performance. Just keep in mind that differences will exist because the chips power different hardware.

Pro and Max versions of M-series chips are always the most powerful in the line, even outperforming the entry-level version of newer chips. Because of that, we expect that the MacBook Pro OLED will be noticeably more powerful than the MacBook Pro M6.

MacBook Pro OLED vs MacBook Pro M6: Outlook

With both new MacBooks launching on November 6, we won’t have to wait long to see what they can truly do. That said, based on what we know so far, it’s not too hard to decide which notebook to buy.

If you’ve been waiting for a MacBook Pro with an OLED screen and touchscreen support, consider the MacBook Pro OLED. Just keep its sticker price in mind, as it’s currently the most expensive MacBook available.

Conversely, if touchscreen support and OLED aren’t as important, then you won’t go wrong with the M6 MacBook Pro. This is especially true if you want to save nearly $1,000 off the starting price. And while an OLED touchscreen is certainly enticing, the MacBook Pro M6's Mini-LED panel won’t disappoint.

'The Gilded Age' season 4

"The Gilded Age" starting its fourth season is without a doubt the main event of HBO Max's November offerings. I hate to admit it, but I haven't seen any of "The Gilded Age" myself. Based on the trailer and my research for this article, I must check it out. I love a period drama set in late-19th century New York City. 'City Of God: The Fight Rages On' season 2

"City of God: The Fight Rages On" follows up on the 2002 film "City of God." It's just as intense as the full-length feature. Now back for its second season, director Aly Muritiba dives deeper into the intense conflicts between the police, drug dealers and militias in the favela and how it affects the community. It's a heavy watch, but the writing and translations are solid, and it is entertaining despite feeling very real and authentic.

'When a Witness Recants'

Nothing beats sinking your teeth into a good documentary, even when the subject matter isn't always easy to handle emotionally. This is one that looks to be emotionally charged, covering the story of Andrew Stewart, Ransom Watkins, and Alfred Chestnut, who were wrongly convicted of the 1983 murder of 14-year-old DeWitt Duckett. The trio spent 36 years in prison for a crime they did not commit, and the documentary dives into all the painful details. It won't be an easy watch, but it'll suck you in through to the end, especially given the praise it's getting in screenings and at Sundance.

It stars Zazie Beetz as Asia, an ex-convict who takes a housekeeping job at a swanky New York high-rise called the Virgil to track down her missing sister. There's just one problem: The building is a 12-story death trap run by a Satanic cult. Fortunately for her, she’s far more dangerous than anyone expects, and she fights her way through the carnage as best she can, which makes for a bloody good time for fans of movies like "Ready or Not."

‘Clashing Through the Snow’ (Nov. 23)

This cozy holiday rom-com strands two rival publishing editors, played by Christopher Briney (“The Summer I Turned Pretty”) and Michelle Randolph (“Landman”), at a snowed-in airport and forces them to share a rental car all the way to New York. The catch is that they’re secretly competing for the same career-saving book deal, which makes their road trip more tense than you might have guessed. The movie has a scene-stealing supporting cast that includes Lukas Gage, Julia Fox and Paris Hilton, and it's perfect for settling into the winter holidays.

‘Blade Runner 2099’ (Nov. 25)

The world of "Blade Runner" expands onto the small screen with this ambitious new series. Head coach Xabi Alonso will be without the Argentine and Brazilian at Anfield again, so that will afford Penders another chance, while Estevao may get a rare chance under Alonso.

Apple has capped off its week of "Pro and tell" announcements by unveiling the long-awaited touchscreen MacBook Pro OLED. In what could be the biggest update to MacBook Pro lineup since its inception twenty years ago, we now have a tandem OLED display on Apple's premium laptop for the first time.

In addition, Apple has dropped the notch in favor of an all-new Dynamic Island similar to what we're used to on the best iPhones. And guess what, the illuminated Apple logo on the lid is back!

Tom's Guide is in attendance at Apple's "Pro and tell" showcase in LA today, and we'll bring you our full reaction and hands-on with the new MacBook Pro OLED imminently. In the meantime, check out our live blog right here.

Specs

Price and release date

We’ll get the bad news out of the way first, the MacBook Pro OLED is set to start at $2,899 for the base-level 14-inch spec with the M5 Pro and rise to $3,399 for the 16-inch model.

If you want to go for the M5 Max spec, the starting price for the 14-inch version will set you back $4,499 while the 16-inch model is $4,799.

Pre-orders begin today, Wednesday, October 28, with shipping (and in-store availability) due to start on November 6.

That’s a serious chunk of change compared to the $1,999 starting price of the M6 MacBook Pro announced yesterday. It’s the highest starting price of any MacBook Pro model, surpassing the $2,799 price of the 17-inch model Apple revealed in 2006.

PROLED XDR Display with touch

Here’s why you’re going to be paying a premium for this laptop — it’s the step-up in display quality that we’ve been hoping for for years. Apple has named this device the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and claims the laptop "offers a visual experience unlike any other."

We're talking about a tandem OLED panel that will outshine and outclass the mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR panel on the regular MacBook Pro. Users will get true per-pixel blacks and zero blooming around UI elements on this display.

Apple can push this display to peak HDR brightness of 2000 nits and for anyone who uses a MacBook Pro for visual creative work, this is going to be a game-changer.

"PROLED XDR is the world’s best laptop display, delivering true-to-life color and unparalleled brightness and contrast," Apple's press release explains.

"The PROLED XDR display offers tandem OLED technology unlike any other, with deep innovations in its layers that keep brightness and grayscale uniform across the entire display, while minimizing internal reflections common in traditional OLED designs.

"It’s all backed by advanced algorithms in the display engine that precisely control each pixel in real time, plus a meticulous manufacturing process and precise calibration of every panel for consistency from display to display."

In addition, the notch cutout that Apple introduced in 2021 has been replaced with a true Dynamic Island, just like you’ll find on the iPhone. This will bring Live Activities to the MacBook for the first time.

And finally, despite what Steve Jobs may have said, the MacBook now has touch input for the first time.

Apple says it's crafted touch input specifically for the Mac, with a touch sensor built directly into the display panel — not layered on top of it.

"Everyday tasks are simple and intuitive, allowing users to scroll through a webpage with a natural swipe; pinch to zoom in on a photo; drag and drop slides from one presentation to another; and double-tap a window to fill the screen, or flick to tile it into place," Apple wrote.

Design

Apple has made a few notable changes to the traditional design of the MacBook Pro, as a result of the new display. Because OLED panels don’t require the same backlight array, the company has been able to make the chassis thinner and lighter than its non-OLED counterparts.

With slimmer display borders, the 16-inch display now grows to 16.3 inches, while the 14-inch display delivers a more portable 14.2-inch design. What's more, this iteration of MacBook Pro is lighter, with the 14-inch weighing half a pound less at three pounds. The 16-inch version tips the scales at just four pounds.

Rumors before the event were that Apple has redesigned and stiffened the hinge to avoid the dreaded wobble when you reach up and touch the screen. It's something we'll be testing for in our hands-on.

The new MacBook Pro includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe, and a headphone jack. In addition to the PROLED XDR display, it supports up to three external displays with M5 Pro and up to four with M5 Max. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 are on board, as you'd expect.

Oh, and probably the most talked-about update to the design — the Apple logo glows. It feels like 2008 all over again!

macOS 27 Golden Gate

Apple has taken a leaf from the iPhone Duo book and made some subtle changes to macOS to optimise it for touchscreen input. The company says its own apps are optimized for the new MacBook Pro, and many existing apps work with Touch right away, because macOS automatically translates touches into clicks.

We don't know exactly how it's been implemented yet, but I hope we get context-aware touch scaling that means when you reach out to touch the display, target hitboxes will dynamically expand while context menus appear enlarged around your fingers.

Interactions familiar from iOS and iPadOS should be included, such as pull-to-refresh across native apps, multi-touch zooming, pinch-to-navigate in Safari, and direct scrubbing across timelines in creative suites like Final Cut Pro and Logic.

Of course, the MacBook Pro OLED’s full Force Touch trackpad continues to serve as the primary input, but having the option to interact directly with the screen is long overdue.

"Graphic designers can now use the entire display as their canvas, no longer constrained by the area of the trackpad when drawing; musicians can play software instruments right onscreen; and app developers can test how Touch performs in their iOS and iPadOS apps directly on the MacBook Pro display," Apple said.

Performance and power

The MacBook Pro OLED will ship with the M5 Pro / M5 Max chipset rather than the newer M6 processor in the non-OLED MacBook Pro. That may seem counter-intuitive but it’s a question of use cases. The M6 is more performant for single-core speeds but the Pro / Max delivers faster data transfer and better multitasking.

The MacBook Pro OLED is now configurable with up to 128GB of unified memory and now up to 16TB of storage.

Outlook

MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is almost certain to prove a huge hit, despite those wallet-trembling price points.

The combination of an OLED touchscreen display on a MacBook for the first time, not to mention a slimmer and lighter profile as well as the ability to cram even more memory and storage into the chassis are what a lot of Apple users have been asking for. It still keeps the 12MP Center Stage camera tucked inside that Dynamic Island, though.

We’ll be getting hands-on with it as soon as possible and, following that, we’ll be putting the MacBook Pro OLED through our usual battery of lab tests when we get one in for review. After debuting at Made by Google earlier this year, Xreal's wired XR smart glasses are finally launching today, October. 28. The glasses are a partnership between Google, Qualcomm and Xreal powered by Google's Android XR platform and Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite chipset.

The new glasses are only launching in the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea. Xreal says that the Aura glasses are expected to ship in mid-November.

Nicely, for a limited time, you can order the new glasses for $1,099, for the 256GB version with 12GB of RAM. That's $200 less than the announced normal price of $1,299. The 16GB/512GB configuration is on sale for $1,299.

“This is a defining moment for XR. We built AURA for people who want the power of spatial computing without being removed from the world around them," Xreal co-founder and CEO Chi Xu said in a press release.

Xreal Aura features

Compared to other display glasses like the Xreal One Pro Plus, the Aura is built for spatial computing, similar to the recently announced Meta VR Glasses. And with the launch sale, they're cheaper than Meta glasses, which aren't launching until spring 2027.

Xreal's glasses weigh under 95 grams, largely because the chips and battery are in a separate compute puck. The puck enables gesture controls but can also be used as a trackpad for navigation.

The lenses feature Sony micro-OLED prisms capable of a 70-degree field of view and 1200p resolution at 120Hz.

We've gone hands-on with the Xreal Aura a couple of times and found them pretty impressive. A personal favorite is the Aura's ability to connect directly to the Nintendo Switch over USB-C, something no other smart glasses can do without separate accessories or docks.

Accessories

As part of the launch announcement, Xreal revealed two new accessories we haven't seen before.

The ecosystem includes an Xreal game controller designed in collaboration with GameSir. The controller has a dedicated Gemini key so you can quickly access AI assistance if you want.

There's also a wireless portable keyboard for those who want to use the Aura for work and multi-window productivity setups.

Xreal did not announce prices or release dates for the accessories. We asked for more information here and will update if the company responds.

Price and availability

Both versions of the Xreal Aura are available for pre-order now with a ship date of mid-November. Xreal is offering them for $200 off their normal price through December 2026.

The 12GB/256GB version is $1,099. The 16GB/512GB is on sale for $1,299.

You can order it via the Xreal.com/aura store or at BestBuy.com. Expanded retail store availability will come to select Google Store locations in the US and Japan next year.

Google DeepMind, the tech giant’s primary AI research and development laboratory, has played a major part in the development of Genie, a world model that’s capable of generating interactive virtual worlds.

The original Genie model launched back in March 2024 and was initially powerful enough to generate two-dimensional environments. Then in December 2024, Genie 2 came out and added the ability to generate three-dimensional worlds. Around August 2025, Genie 3 made its debut and gave users the ability to generate and modify both types of interactive worlds in real time.

This month marks the launch of Genie 4 in research preview mode, which is promised by Google to be able to generate the most photorealistic and interactive worlds to date. What makes it stand out from its predecessors is how it lets users type out prompts mid-simulation to change the scene. Also, Genie 4 can generate real-time audio that matches and syncs up with the simulated world that’s been created, which includes music, ambient sounds and interactive dialogue.

With Genie 4’s expanded capabilities tied to its interactive worlds, it could have a major impact on the way video games are created by its talented developer community.

Real-time, interactive world creation and so much more

Google has already explained how game developers have been utilizing Genie 4:

“Game developers and creative technologists are testing Genie 4 to go from an initial idea to an explorable prototype in seconds, testing visual styles, material aesthetics, and interactive mechanics through natural language prompts before writing a single line of engine code.”

Genie 4’s biggest promise is giving users the ability to generate the type of AI-generated worlds that they can actively experience, which could go a long way toward game developers creating instant mockups of what they're envisioning. And it could lead to a future where the most creative game developers could use Genie 4 to turn their fantastical ideas into playable prototypes in just a few seconds.

I could envision a world where Genie 4’s mass availability leads to game developers experimenting with their environmental and character concepts through a simple prompt instead of having to create them themselves. For indie studios that don’t have the finances to create all those resources on their own, Genie 4 could give them the freedom to bring their standout ideas to life, tinkering with it and taking everything they learn from it to apply their development expertise to turning those ideas into commercial video game releases.

I could also see Genie 4 leading to game development cycles getting a bit shorter, as game developers can perform faster prototyping tasks just by prompting. For example, a developer could test unusual and out-of-the-box mechanics in Genie 4 to see how they interact with the world they’ve generated at large before fully investing in developing them for their game’s world. Experimenting with character interactions & dialogue and creating dynamic visual & audio scenes as proofs of concept could also be a huge boon to game makers if Genie 4’s capabilities expand to an even more impressive level.

Currently, Genie 4 has begun rolling out as a research preview tool specifically catered to professionals within the creative, journalism, education, gaming and engineering industries. Over time, it will become available for Google AI Ultra subscribers through Project Genie. Early access will come to users through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio tools. General availability for Genie 4 has not been announced yet, but you can sign up for access through its waitlist.

The takeaway

Game development engines such as Unreal Engine and Unity provide game makers with the tools they need to build and ship the games you regularly play.

If Genie 4’s power to quickly generate and modify interactive worlds takes off among the game development community, I could see a far-flung future where they use traditional game engines and Genie 4 in conjunction with each other to bring their playable concepts to life.

Generating and adapting interactive experiences on demand with Genie 4 sounds great. But it’ll need a lot more problems solved before it hopes to become a mainstream video game development tool, such as figuring out the best ways to use Genie 4 to produce consistency, control and performance for its world’s mechanics, characters and NPC interactions.

It's been a big week for Macs, with Apple announcing the new MacBook Pro M6, iMac M6 and, more than likely, the very first touchscreen MacBook Pro. But this definitely isn't the end of Apple's computing ambitions, and word is that early 2027 could see the launch of two new MacBooks, including the MacBook Neo 2.

This news comes courtesy of Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, who claims that Apple is working on new versions of both the MacBook Neo and MacBook Air. These two machines are expected to arrive in the first half of next year, but sadly Gurman doesn't divulge any additional details about either of them.

Gurman refers to the updated machines as "refreshed," which I understand to mean very little in the way of meaningful design changes. My assumption is backed up by rumors that a major OLED redesign is coming at some point in 2028.

That'll be disappointing for some, considering we've had the same Air design for the past few years. But we should still expect the usual slew of upgrades, including an M6 chip and all the associated performance and battery upgrades that new hardware offers.

The MacBook Neo is likely to get similarly iterative upgrades. Considering how cheap the laptop was at launch, and the fact that Apple has had to raise the price due to skyrocketing RAM costs, it seems unlikely we'll see any major changes made to the Neo. Meaning all those cost-saving design choices are likely to stick around for a little while longer.

Gurman has previously claimed that the second generation will feature the A19 Pro chip, an increased 12GB of RAM and a bunch of new color options. It's unclear whether 12GB will be the standard amount of memory, or if it will be an optional upgrade for those willing to pay more — like Touch ID on the current Neo model.

Considering the skyrocketing price of RAM, and the fact the MacBook Neo has already suffered a value-reducing price hike, my money is on the latter.

As for when we might see these new machines, a smart bet would be March 2027 — or some time around then. Both the MacBook Neo and MacBook Air M5 were released in March of this year, and it makes sense that Apple would follow that same release pattern for their successors. Especially since spring is generally a pretty quiet month for Apple.

We'll have to wait and see how this all pans out, and what future rumors have to say about both machines.

Once upon a time, the Amazon Echo Dot was the company's least expensive smart speaker, selling for $50 or less during Black Friday. Those days are long gone, but Amazon thinks it's added enough to the new Echo Dot to justify its new price of $99.

The sixth-generation Echo Dot, which comes four years after its predecessor, has a similar design, with an acoustic fabric covering the front of the speaker, and a hard plastic shell around the back. The Alexa bar — the small LED strip that lets you know when the AI is listening — is now just a small arc in the front, rather than a circle running around the bottom of the device. Maybe Amazon thought it looked a bit too much like the Google Home Speaker?

Despite the outward similarities, Amazon has beefed up the internals of the Echo Dot. It has a marginally larger full-range driver (1.75 inches vs. 1.73 inches) that the company says will deliver crisper vocals and 50% more bass than the previous generation. Its new A23 processor is also better suited for handling on-device Alexa+ requests, so that you'll get faster responses.

And, the addition of a fourth microphone means that Alexa+ should be able to more easily pick up your voice, even if the room is noisy.

While the previous Echo Dot had both presence and temperature sensors, the newest model has Amazon's Omnisense sensor, which is basically those two sensors in one, but also uses AI to help provide more proactive suggestions.

As before, the Echo Dot has an Eero Wi-Fi extender built in, and supports Zigbee, Matter, and Thread. However, it has a hub built into the speaker itself, so it should be easier to further extend your smart home network.

The Echo Dot goes on sale today (Oct. 28) for $99, and is available in Graphite, Glacier White, Agave Green, and Coral Pink. The Amazon Kids Echo Dot, which comes in Octopus and Penguin, starts at $109.99.

Amazon Echo Studio with Camera

Amazon is also adding a camera to its top-end smart speaker; this will most likely appeal to those who have a Fire TV device, and want to upgrade their speakers. You can already use the Echo Studios as output devices for your Fire TV (I hooked up four Echo Studios to create a full surround system), but the Echo Studio with Camera enables one more feature.

Now, if you say "Alexa, call my mom," it will initiate a video call using your Fire TV device and the camera in the Echo Studio. This way, you can both see your caller and be seen by them. During the demo, Amazon executive Panos Panay made a video call to his parents, who seemed both bemused and a little befuddled (it was pretty early in the day for them).

However, you can also use the camera in conjunction with Alexa+, and have it identify objects, something Amazon said could be helpful for those with vision impairments.

The Echo Studio with Home Camera costs $249 — $30 more than the regular Echo Studio — and available in Graphite. You can buy a stand for the Studio separately for $39.

Over the years, Amazon has released several Echo Dot-like smart speakers with miniature displays, which were mostly designed to show you the time and weather. There was the Echo Dot with Clock (a design we loved) as well as the slightly more involved Echo Spot.

With the new Amazon Echo Time, the company is reviving the look of the original Echo Spot, packing a circular touchscreen into an orb-like smart speaker, in the hopes that it can reclaim an *ahem* spot on your nightstand.

Price and release date

The Echo Time goes on sale today (Oct. 28) for $199.99. You can get it in Graphite, Glacier White, and Coral Pink. Amazon also sells matching adjustable stands for $39.

Like other Echo devices, there's a kid's version of the Echo Time that costs $209, and includes a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+. The Amazon Kids Echo Time comes in Galactic Grape and Cosmic Lime.

A customizable clock face

The standout feature of the Echo Time is the 3.2-inch display; the Time comes with hundreds of clock faces, all of which are customizable. Among the faces are ones for sports teams as well as other licensed properties like Harry Potter and the DC Universe.

The Echo Time's display also changes throughout the day, so as better to incorporate your natural cycles; it slowly brightens in the morning, and at night it dims automatically and reduces is blue light output to help you fall asleep more easily.

A smarter alarm

Similar to its newer Echo smart speakers, the Echo Time has Amazon's Omnisense sensor array, which can detect things such as presence and temperature, along with an ultrasound sensor to monitor for breathing.

Alexa+ uses these sensors to monitor your sleep, and can then adjust your desired wake-up time from 10 to 60 minutes, tailoring it for what it thinks is the optimal time to get you out of bed.

If you have other smart home devices, you can also add them to your wakeup routine, such as having a bedside light slowly turn on.

At $199, the Echo Time isn't cheap; the current Echo Spot costs half as much, and also serves its function well, and you get all the same Alexa+ functionality — it even acts as an Eero Wi-Fi extender. However, the Echo Time could appeal to those who want something that can better monitor their sleep, and make sure they wake up at the right time.

Over the years, Amazon has come out with a bunch of really goofy products with Alexa inside: fashion assistants, wall clocks, light-up buttons, and even a smart ring. Yet, it's taken until now for the company to release a smart photo frame.

Perhaps the wait was worth it. While the new Alexa Photo Frame doesn't break any new ground design-wise when compared with the best digital photo frames, Amazon is using Alexa+ to intelligently curate all of those photos you have stored on your phone or elsewhere. You actually might finally see that picture you took during you vacation to Aruba five years ago.

The Alexa Photo Frame looks like your standard digital photo frame. It has a 10-inch, 1280 x 800 anti-glare touchscreen, and comes in three finishes: black plastic ($199), or birch or walnut wood frames, which cost $229. All models are available starting today (Oct. 28).

However, once you set up the photo frame, Alexa+ will start to work its magic. First, it will analyze all of the pictures in your library, and then its classifies them based on who's in the pictures, what people are doing, the time of year it was taken, and more.

Then, it will display the photos on the Frame based on factors like the time of year. So, for example, you'd see holiday photos in December, and beach pictures in the summer.

But, Alexa+ can also understand context, so it might pull two pictures of your kid, taken years apart, of them doing a similar activity, and display them side-by-side.

Of course, you can also curate what appears on the Frame, or if you decide to gift a frame to a parent or loved one. So if you give one to your parents, you can make sure that they only see pictures of your kids, for instance.

Also, if you want to tug at the heartstrings a little more, you can also attach audio clips to photos, so that when you tap on a picture on-screen, grandparents can hear their grandkids wishing them well.

The Alexa Photo Frame also acts as a smart speaker — not that you'd want to play music on it — so you could ask Alexa+ to display photos of your dog at a park, or pictures from a particular year.

Like other Alexa devices, you can turn off the microphone on the Photo Frame, select the notifications you receive, adjust the brightness of the screen, and more. However, it only works in landscape mode.

While the Alexa Photo Frame can be used by anyone, it makes the most sense for those who are Amazon Prime members, as they can store an unlimited number of photos in the cloud, and use certain Alexa+ features as part of their subscription. If you don't have a Prime subscription, you get 5GB of free cloud storage, with plans starting at $1.99/month for 100GB of storage.

At $199, the Alexa Photo Frame is priced competitively with some of our favorite models. For example, the Aura Aspen, which is a 12-inch model, costs $229. Coming in time for the holidays, I can easily see this being a popular gifting item.

When Amazon lifted the veil off its new Echo Show 16, I thought I was looking at a miniaturized version of Apple's Studio Display. But no, I was looking at Amazon's newest smart display, one that looks like it could beat the HomeView in more ways than one.

I had a chance to check out the Amazon Echo Show 16, which is available for preorder starting today (Oct. 28), and will ship later this year. Here's how Amazon's newest smart display really distinguishes itself from the pack — even if its starting price of $499 could make it a reach for some.

Price and availability

The Echo Show 16 is available for preorder starting today (Oct. 28) at Amazon.com, and will ship on December 16. The model with the standard glossy display costs $499, while the Nanomatte display is $569. If you preorder the device, you can get $100 off the price.

If you're not planning to wall mount the device, a swivel stand is available for $69, and a swivel-and-tilt stand costs $124.

Design

The Echo Show 16 is the most refined smart display from Amazon I've seen; the panel itself isn't as thin as the Echo Show 8 or Echo Show 10, but that's because the speakers are housed behind the display, rather than sitting in a bulbous base. As a result, the Echo Show 16 looks more like something you'd connect to your desktop, rather than a standalone device.

The rear of the Echo Show 16 is thicker than most other tablets, as it houses eight subwoofers. Around the front is a 13MP camera, which has a digital zoom to keep you in frame if you're moving around.

The screen itself measures 16 inches diagonally, and has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Like the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro tablet, you can get the Echo Show 16 with either a glossy finish, or with a nanomatte display, which cuts down on glare.

Sadly, the aluminum stand costs $69 extra, so unless you plan to wall-mount it, you'll have to cough up a little more.

A redesigned Alexa + interface

Amazon has once again redesigned the interface on its Echo Shows, this time making Alexa+ more prominent. Now, all Alexa+ interactions are saved as "cards" which are displayed as a widget on the screen. Tap on the card, and it expands to show you the transcript from that interaction, as well as supporting documents, images and links.

For example, if you ask Alexa+ how to grow tomatoes, it might present cards for different types of tomatoes, tips on watering, fertilizing, and which might grow best in your area.

Alexa+ will then organize all of the cards by type, theme, date, or any other categorization it thinks is appropriate, so you can more easily find them at a later time. A special Card gallery shows all of them at a glance.

Amazon's Alexa+ smartphone app will also get a similar treatment; by design, any cards you create on your phone will stay there until you share them with the Echo Show.

The Calendar view — now called Family Organizer — also sees a refresh. In addition to showing everyone's schedule, there's now a tab for meal planning, so you can lay out everything you want to cook for the week.

Smarter home view

For those with a lot of smart home devices, the Echo Show's new Home Map takes what's currently available to the next level. Now, all of your smart home devices are displayed in a 3D map of your house, where you can view, arrange, and control all of them.

For example, if there's a smart light in a bedroom, you can tap on the icon to turn the light on and off, dim it, or change its color, if that's an option. Cleverly, the icon on the screen will also reflect the current state of the device — so, if a light is glowing red, its icon will also have a reddish halo. Or, if a smart speaker is playing music, the screen will show you the song title.

If you have Ring cameras, the Home Map will show icons of people and vehicles around your house moving in real time, based on what the cameras are seeing. If you have familiar faces enabled in the Ring app, the Home Map will also identify those people, too. An Amazon rep said that Blink integration was also coming in the future. I found it to be both cool and a bit creepy — kind of like a high-tech Marauder's Map from Harry Potter.

Fire TV

Like previous Echo Shows, the 16 also acts as a Fire TV device, making it really well suited for those who want a small TV in their kitchen. Like the Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21, the Echo Show 16 will also ship with a Fire TV remote, so that you don't have to rely on touch or voice to find the show you're looking for.

Of all of the Echo Show features I've used over the years, it's probably the one I've used the most.

Outlook

The hardware design of the new Echo Show 16 is impressive, but it's the new interface that might just have won me over. While I still want to take more time to really dive into it, I liked how it shows all of your interactions with Alexa+ in a smart, easily accessible way. I am curious to see how easy it will be to find everything once you have a lot of saved prompts, but it looks like Amazon has found a smart way to show everything on the screen. The new smart home interface also looks like it should make it much easier for me to manage all my devices.

This same interface will be rolling out to other Echo Show devices, so you don't need to rush out and buy the new Echo Show 16, unless you want the new design or the nanomatte display. We hope to get one in soon to test, so stay tuned.
