4$ a gallon... were approaching $10 a gallon in the uk! And its not like our average wage here is twice as much as the states!

Actually your wages are significantly on average higher, if you take into account the dollar to pound ratio. That and public transit and average commute times make it much worse on American's than on most of Europe, its totally our own faults but so are high gas prices in Europe, since you guys tax the crap out of it, and we only tax about 20 cents a gallon. I guess what I'm saying is, if gas was 20 dollars a gallon, I would carpool, but I'd still have to drive 25 miles one way to work, with the public transit option taking upwards of 2 hours.
