Porn Industry Wants in on Video Game Consoles

Vivid Entertainment wants to do the PlayStation 3.

Sony pushes the PlayStation 3 as far more than just a games machine. In fact, the latest round of Sony advertisements has the PS3 presenting the idea that "it does everything."

As a full-featured media hub able to entertain everyone in many ways, adult film company Vivid Entertainment figures that it'd be only fair if people would be able to enjoy titles such as Bad Wives, Seven Deadly Sins and Tristan Taramino's Expert Guide to Oral Sex 2 via the PlayStation Network.

"Our point is pretty simple," Vivid's CEO Steve Hirsch told Kotaku. "As long as age verification is in place that (Sony) feels comfortable with we see no reason why adults shouldn't be allowed to access adult movies on the Playstation 3."

Hirsch is also interested in putting adult films on the Xbox Live Marketplace, and perhaps even the Wii. But the PlayStation 3 gets the attention first as Sony is now allowing on-demand adult movies for the console service in Japan. Hirsch sees this as an opening for Vivid on the PS3 for the western market.

"They had made it clear in the past they were not interested," Hirsch said. "Now that they have agreed to in some way allow adult films on the Japanese platform we are going to move forward and make a formal request."

Given the impossibility of game developers getting ESRB rated "AO" for Adults Only games approved by platform holders such as Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, it seems unlikely that we'll be seeing Debbie Does Dallas on your favorite gaming console. But with parental controls at the best they've ever been, maybe it could happen.

In college, someone had added a parental control password to my roomates PS2 without him knowing it. Blocked out the unrated-rated Transformers movie (animated one from the 80's). Luckily it was only changed to 0007, otherwise we would have spent years trying to guess what it was.

I say, lock all PS3s from adult content via mandatory update (no update, no adult content). Then force all consoles to be unlocked via some pre-approved mechanism that some kid with his parents credit card number can't bypass. Then, put whatever content you want on the Playstation network. If that can't be done, I doubt they'll even consider doing it.

I wouldn't mind seeing some 18+ rated video games. I guess we have some now since many games swear with the F word. Showing a little tits and ass would be a nice change.

If it could kill a part of the porn industry, I wish Sony would prevent the release of Blu-Ray porn movies.

What's with all the hate? I don't understand why some people get their panties in a twist about porn. I can understand it may not be something you like... so don't watch it. Why do you feel the need to dictate for everyone else?

I'm all for inclusion of the adult entertainment industry in the console video game market, provided there are sufficient parental safeguards in place. Think about how much cooler Fallout 3 could have been if they could have released an AO version of the game. Look at all of the attention Mass Effect received for its racy scene towards the end of the game. And let's no forget the GTA franchise... talk about tailor made for an AO release.

this will never fly on the wii. however, it will more likely occur on the 360 as well.

Don't want to see how they would use the Wii controller on this.

The Wii is traditionally a kids' console. I don't think Nintendo will go for it.

The Wii had a strip poker anime style trailer on gametrailers.

SNL already did a skit about just that (though the actual game was not pornographic, it might as well have been)!

As far as adult content goes, consoles are for violence only, not consensual sex! They do have standards at these companies you know!

I don't watch Porn but I am a 53 year old and I say that it sounds like a good idea. Why not ???
If you do not like Porn then do not watch or "play" a Porn game but it is for an adult to decide and that is the fair thing to do.
Porn is a big money making industry and this will only help some to make money or to stay in business.

um i play all my vob files, avi files, .mov .mp4, etc files through my 360 in full screen, so why would I need vivid for that? Look into the free TVERSITY to do it to your consoles (even your Wii) as well.

If is was not for the Porn Industry, VCRs would not have sold as we as they do. Hence no home movie market. Its one of the reasons VHS became the format of choice in the Tape Format wars.

Hm I could see someone (vendor) selling wireless adult-rated adult toy controller (wii-like) such as dildo for a sex game.

It's been said countless times, we can have games blowing people apart with machine guns barely warranting an M rating, yet gasp in horror the second a pair of tits shows up in a game. Funny how America is still the most sexually immature country all the while having the most strict censorship of it.
Maybe we need to get back to raising our kids first and bitching about adult content second.

Simple and effective parental lock:

Use the camera for 360/PS3 and biometrics + voice authorization. If face and voice do not match, no unlock.

Noooo...

The pornographic industry is too stale. It's so bland... absolutely nothing has changed from the first porn vid I ever watched to the last. The pornographic industry is making porn boring bby repeatably making such shit.

I've nothing against pornography, but I'm scared that politicians will use this as an example of why there needs to be more censorship of games. Germany is trying to ban all violent games - bad news for Crytek amongst others. Would you want to see laws like that in your country?

This seems like an appealing was to use games consoles, but it could also produce some really screwed up legislation if knee-jerk reactionaries and uninformed soccer moms start lobbying their politicians for tough censorship.

Yeah, add tons of parental lockouts, codes, and other worthless verifications. Cause you know, kids can't get on the internet and google sex/porn.

It is a parent's responsibility to teach their kids about sex, and starting before the age of 10. Then it is not big deal to them anymore.

All this age verification junk is just bogus and usually doesn't work.

It's not arguing whether this is "right or wrong", but why bother game console? Unless all these people have no internet and computers. Just because something can be in everything doesn't mean it should.
