12. TuneCast Mobile FM Transmitter - F8V367-APL - Belkin

The Belkin TuneCast Mobile FM Transmitter allows users to leverage the audio of any FM radio to share your iPod tunes with others.

Belkin's TuneCast Mobile FM Transmitter is a lightweight FM transmitter that connects to the iPod and broadcasts the music being played on the iPod to any FM radio on one of four channels. This device is compatible with the headphone jack of almost any audio source that is using a mini headphone jack. Although it is trimmed in white to match the iPod, it can be also be used with a variety of PDA, MP3, CD, or cassette players, as well as the iPod.

The TuneCast requires the use of two AAA batteries which are included with the unit. These batteries power the unit to transmit up to a distance of approximately 25 feet. However, we found that at longer distances the TuneCast was subject to more interface; so to provide the optimum sound quality, we recommend a transmission distance of no more than 7 to 10 feet maximum. As the batteries wear down, your distance may be reduced accordingly. We would rate the battery life as excellent, as we still have not worn out the initial set of batteries that shipped with the TuneCast.

The TuneCast offers a cable management scheme that allows the cable from the TuneCast to be stored around the unit itself. It offers a power light and LED indicator to let the user know that the unit is operating, and provides an audio frequency range of 50Hz to 15KHz, according to the documentation supplied by Belkin.

Using the TuneCast, we found the sound quality to be acceptable, but not as robust as a direct connection would provide. The ease of use and slick looking, lightweight design of the TuneCast make this product a good offering for its suggested retail price of $39.99 US. TuneCast is a unique and welcomed addition to the iPod accessories line up. Belkin offers a three year warranty on the TuneCast. Unfortunately for users outside North America, the TuneCast is currently available only for use in North America.
