Scientists Detect Potential Criminals via Face Recognition

- By - Source : University of Notre Dame

A team of researchers at the University of Notre Dame are working on a software that could identify criminals.

The technology is based on the thought that criminals are likely to visit their crime scene several times before or after a crime is committed. The U.S. military in the Middle East also indicated that IED bomb makers return to the locations of explosions to improve their designs.

Facial recognition that is not compared against an existing database can be used in a new technology to determine if certain people return to certain locations suspiciously often. It is up to law enforcement to determine what would be considered too often. Kevin Bowyer and Patrick Flynn of Notre Dame's Computer Science and Engineering Department have been working on image-based biometrics since 2001. Together with Jeremiah Barr, a doctoral student in computer science and engineering, the team developed a "Questionable Observer Detector (QuOD)", which records "face tracks" of individuals in videos and uses that data to identify people if they are appearing more than just one time.

Bowyer, Flynn and Barr admit that there are still "challenges" and there is work to do to overcome lighting issues as well as scenarios in which videos of faces are taken from different angles. However, they said they will be able to solve the problems and their software may provide law enforcement a new tool for identifying potential criminals.

I predict yet another multimillion dollar system that can be rendered useless by some "fake mustaches and fake beards".

So I could be labelled a potential terrorist because I go for a daily run around my local park?

So if a computer does it it's considered a marvel of technology... but if *I* do it, I'm labeled a racist?

Because you can't tell me those black guys hanging out on the corner all day with their pants falling off their ass and no job are up to any form of good.

Maybe the difference is the computer doesn't feel the need to inject social commentary into it's output.

On another note, we just moved a baby step closer toward a Minority Report society.

I sure it would weed-out regulars, or the entire system would be kinda useless.

Actually a "regular" could be stalking another "regular" on a "regular" basis...

Exactly! It drives me crazy how people are not allowed to use common sense any more. The fact is that as this type of technology progresses and grows we will find that the stereotypes are there for a reason.
Racism is when you are repulsed by a particular person based on their skin color, not because you are repulsed by their life choices. There are plenty of black people who are great (I work with them), and plenty who are hoodlums. There are plenty of white people who are great, and there are plenty who are trailer trash. Every race has their good and their bad, and it is generally obvious by how they choose to dress themselves, how they treat others, and the lifestyles that they idolize. One of these days when the tech can tell the difference it will be disbanded because it will be deemed that the people who designed it were raciest in the first place.

Call me an asshole, but this just reminded me of a "Racist Face Detection" problem that HP was dealing with before. Sure hope that doesn't happen here lmao.

If it is anything like Kinect, it won't even be able to detect dark-skinned perps.

First of all, you folks don't know what those black guys with the baggy pants on the corner are doing. They could be drumming up support for a community youth center or gathering signatures for a petition for all you know. Furthermore, even if those black guys are "gang-bangin' drug dealers", are they really any more criminal than a group of rich, white, well dressed CEOs that use their power and influence to buy an election for their political candidate of choice? Perhaps some of you aren't aware of this but the expression "you can't judge a book by it's cover" isn't actually referring to books.

While it may not be outright racist to make such sweeping generalizations based on the way someone dresses, it does come from an equally closed-minded, ignorant, and intolerant mindset. Such a way of thinking, while still far too common, has ultimately never made much sense.

OT: Facial recognition technology used for purposes such as that discussed in the article sets a terrifying precedent. It should be outlawed.

From Merriam-Webster - a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

From Oxford - the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race , especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races

By these definitions, no this program is not exhibiting racist behaviors. It is not looking at their "race" but instead it is doing analyses on their "behavior".
